Reviews (page 12 of 15)
This album shines when Cobain doesn’t overstrain his voice and actually sings! He’s good! Favorite track: Breed
4,5
Clearly a classic, but not really my favorite style.
An album that hit at the perfect time. It set sail to 1000 bands. Not overly complex but every song on there is catchy and instantly recognizable.
This was the album that woke everyone up to the fact we had finally abandoned the 80's. And because of this a huge wave of alternative music hit the markets and made artists look for new and better ways. But being that influential and important does not always mean it's a great album. Now don't get me wrong, I like this album a lot. But it doesn't mean it was the best album of that time period or of the Grunge genre. Hell, this isn't even the best album of Nirvana.
Laatulevyhän tämäkin, klassiko syystä. 4/5
An amazing influential album that has been mythologized to the point of becoming a bit overrated
Nirvana's greatest. The first three songs are banging. A couple of other goods one interspersed. Favorite song is Come As You Are
A classic. Killer of hair metal.
I read a book by Chuck Klosterman called “The Nineties” and in it he argued that the 90s truly began when Nirvana released “Nevermind.” This is truly the sound of a generation and the sound of a decade. So many radio hits on this album, Lithium probably being my favorite. Other good songs that don't get as much attention. Like most great albums and artists, the history and context of their time and location add so much flavor to the recording. Kurt Cobain was a reluctant icon and embraced the countercultural revolution even amidst his unwelcomed fame. I love his rejection of norms and conventions, be it in his musical approach or when he wore a dress to a red carpet event. A shame he was lost so young. Loud, angry, at times introspective and sometimes overplayed, this is an excellent album and has so much to offer and much to return to again and again. I go on and off with how much I actually enjoy Nirvana, but their place in history and music is unmistaken. 4-4.5 stars.
Smells like teen spirit/come as you are/something in the way- always slayful. Loved breed and Polly and stay away-added to liked songs. Lithium's nice, must've heard it before. Dad should definitely listen to territorial pissings. Album has been added to library❤️❤️. Not a singy album but nice to revise to (was doing Spanish revision). Masterclass in alternative type rock. Didn't the kid on the cover sue them later in life, I mean his willy is showing- and wouldn't it count as child pornography?
This album brings back a lot of memories and I have a lot of respect for Nirvana and this album. I’ll listen to it if it’s on but I’m not going to reach for this album on my own. In Bloom and Lithium are the best songs.
Great 90s rock. Includes major hit Smells Like Teen Spirit. Favorite track is Lithium.
Somehow this was still cool by the time I was in middle school. I can't tell if it's nostalgia, but it even seems cool now.
A great album that set the standard for the Grunge/Seattle scene
Ok
I really wasn’t into grunge when it was happening. Didn’t really care for Nirvana. I was wrong. This is really good and totally holds up.
I loved this album. Love. Love. Love! So classic. I think if I were alive when this was popular and saw them in Seattle, my life would be better.
Didn't expect to know so many songs already. Really brought the rating down with the last song which just sounded like noise. Also not the biggest fan of the other two noisier tracks, but I can understand why this album became so huge
This took me back to when I was 18 and ready for a musical revolution. After years of hair metal and really lame pop, Nirvana came out with some refreshing sounds that was very pleasing to my ears. Now it is a tad overrated and it has been way overplayed, but it is essential listening.
Some really great songs ofc, but also some that i don´t like and are just "shouting songs" to me. On top of this also not a big fan of the sound of the album, especially the guitar. Overall not enough for me to give a 5 for such a classic album.
Classic album, of course, and I agree it is great, up to a point. Every time I listen to this album, I really enjoy the first half of the songs, but then around track 7 I'm starting to feel a little tedium. The songs are still very catchy, but musically also feel similar to some of the earlier ones, and I don't love the overall sound enough to be okay with that.
Other than SLTS I thought the second half was much stronger and more my style. Very well made. 4.5
I think if we're all being honest we know that there are some misses on this album.
Pretty good
Definitely my jam from when I was back in school. This is an album full of great riffs and lyrics you can join in with. I think this is an album with a defining sound. Kurt's singing is probably something I would bounce off hard elsewhere but it is cemented into the sound of the music with Nirvana so strongly that it's an integral part of what makes it great. There's a lot I feel I could say. Standout Track: Breed
Haven't actually listened to this since around 1997. All my favorites still kill "In Bloom," "Come As You Are," and "Lithium" are the stand outs from that group. "Breed" is the one I really forgot about. That song felt like a locked away memory suddenly recovered. Of the faster songs, that's probably my favorite. Obviously "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is great, but I'll never really feel it the way I do with some of the other songs.
I like Nirvana. Just not always in the mood for them.
EVERYONE already knows this and of course it should be on the list.
The irreverent, angsty, emotional anthem of Generation X. High-gain, distorted guitar and bass, smashing and blisteringly loud drums, and surprisingly melodic vocals crash together in a giant middle-finger to the establishment, while also embracing some pop tendencies of the time. Cobain's vocals are either mumbled or shouted, but are always slurred and unintelligible. What can be discerned of the lyrics is a sarcastic, surrealist wasteland of barely-caring, too-much caring, and mocking one-liners that sum up the zeitgeist of the time. I respect Nirvana and the monumental influence they had on music in the 90's, but there were parts of this album that I struggled to understand, both literally and metaphorically. I guess you had to be there. Oh well, nevermind. Stand out tracks include "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Bloom", "Lithium", "Polly", and "Something In The Way".
Another album I bought due to media influence and the hype of it being a must have recording. I’m happy to have it in my collection as I acknowledge that it is one of the most important and influential albums of the 90’s if not the whole of popular music but it is not a personal favourite of mine. It’s ages since I played the album through (no need as the album hit singles are still continuously played on the radio) so welcomed opportunity to do so. Cannot argue that the first three tracks are perhaps one of the strongest album openings ever. As for the rest it’s mediocre grunge rock, which I don’t like, with the odd good track. Something in The Way is a welcome relief. But this is followed by Endless, Nameless which sounds like a jam session used as an album filler and ends the record at complete odds with how the record begins. Half the songs make this album a classic but can’t help thinking that the myths and legends surrounding Nirvana also lend weight to why this album is regarded as a classic by so many.
Another good listen.
Aahhhh. Finally. I've tapped so many "not my thing" reviews I was starting to wonder about this 1001. This album is a 4 or 5 for me. Imma listen again and decide.
I'm struggling to come up with something insightful to say. Everybody knows this one. I feel like I'm trying to introduce my kid brother to everybody at a family reunion.
Hot take: the first six songs (Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Breed, Lithium, Polly) is really what people think of when they praise this album. And for those songs, the praise is well-deserved. The second half of the album (Territorial Pissings through Endless, Nameless)? I think that's largely interchangable pop-punk that wouldn't have had nearly the impact that the first half had. Not saying it's bad - just not nearly the level that the first six songs are.
Great album to give yourself a kitchen scissor home haircut to
Ikonisk
Great first six songs.
exciting for lots of reasons, very pivotal for grunge and rock music and ofc bangin tunes.
The singles were nice
Great album with a lot of the classic Nirvana songs I go to. I have definitely listened to this album all the way through before but it has been a while. Endless, Nameless is a bit aggressive to end it but overall I really like this album a lot.
7/10
As good as expected!
great
Some bangers
Not the best of the Albums, but a great gateway for 12yr olds experiencing angst and self-loathing as it has been for the last couple of decades. Still a great album. Once you 12yr olds are done being sad and angry to this, check out Bleach for the destructive abandon, check out In Utero for the maturation of the sound, then check out every other great grunge band from the 90's which defined my generation of nihilistic under-acheivers. Then remember that these are only feelings and they will change, take small steps every day. Sadness is romantic and easy, being happy is a lot of work, but eventually, and fundamentally worth it.
I may be one of the only 45 year olds in the US that hadn't actually owned or listened to this entire album before. This mostly holds up; the classics are still great and the remainder is fine.
Significant yet over played, but it still has it's moments that bang quite hard. Predictably, the less worn-out deep cuts hold up better. I still love Drain You and Stay Away as much as I did when I was a kid and I never get tired of the way Dave Grohl beats the hell out of those drums.
deserve the hype they got, just not my style
Had a few good songs
Very good album obviously
3/4 of this album is great. Kurt combines catchy melodies with heavily distorted, fast paced guitars. His vocals are unbelievable too. The other quarter is forgettable and sounds like filler, perhaps that could change with more listens. Something In The Way is one of the best songs I've ever heard I think. 4/5
Clásico, no falla pero no me llena - 8
É 4 pa
Half of it’s good, half of it seems like run of the mill grunge, I guess people rave about it because it was kind of a fresh sound at the time but it doesn’t do much for me
This album was damn good.
It's a good album with a few very good songs
Best nirvana album in my opinion.
Nirvana is still not my favorite grunge band, but this is definitely my favorite Nirvana album
Заметил, что Drain You и Smells Like Teen Spirit похожи ну прям очень, с точностью до тональности.
Good
Besides the hits, the rest of this album doesn't do it for me. It's still great stuff but it's never something I really return to.
Great album
Love this album, love Nirvana, my only issue with this album is a lot of the songs sound the same and don’t have a lot of variatio. That said, they’re still good songs and I really appreciate this album for what it is. 4/5 or 81/100
Me deu vontade de ouvir Foo Fighters, Dave manda demais nesse álbum. Favs: In Bloom, On A Plain
Loud, aggressive, commands your attention from the start. I think most people of my generation remember the first time they heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Like a battering ram, the crunchy distorted guitar, despondent bass, and slamming drums just beat you down. Knowing Nirvana's trajectory into the more abrasively experimental, gritty, and even punk on "In Utero" (which I prefer), it's hard to judge "Nevermind" on its own terms. Songs are a very structured, without much deviation from formal verse chorus pattern and a lot of repetition. But still a remarkable, important, and groundbreaking record. PS- Endless, Nameless is such an unhinged (in a good way) song to end the album.
smelly teen spirit is enjoyable. rest of the album i could listen to if it came on, but wouldn't necessarily put it on of my own volition. last song was a bit rought but like idk if i could figure out how to end this album either so i kinda get it. overall solid.
Didn’t like nirvana back in the 1990s for killing rock but 30 years later I can appreciate it for what it is.
If you haven't heard at least half the songs on this album you've been living under a rock. THE grunge album. This was the gateway to a whole new type of music, culture and style. On a re listen the music isn't as creative as I remember, but Kurt's lyrics still remain unique and fresh. Always worth a listen.
Better than I expected, I knew a few of the songs already
in bloom my beloved
1st have great back half just okay
Grunge rock runs thru my veins.
Nostalgic for me. Great intro album for grunge
Iconic. I'd be a cunt to down mark it for being over produced wouldn't i
starts off a banger slows down a bit in mid then comes back
Classic
Never mind was a watershed album, a new sound that captured everyone’s attention. I know (now) it wasn’t Nirvana’s first album, nor were they the first grunge band. But they were were the first to explode, and this is the album that broke out. I was in my early 30’s when this came out, and I was mightily impressed. I can imagine the impact it would’ve had on me if I had been 17. The first five songs are outstanding, and the rest are very solid. That said, this is not an album that I listen to very often. It is overall dark, and unhappy. It starts to wear the further along it gets. Kinda of like the Sex Pistols, which came out when I WAS 17. I’d play side one of that album at top volume before heading out with the guys, but rarely side 2 (back in the vinyl days, kids). And it just doesn’t get that much play these days. Part of me says this deserves a 5 for the first 1/2 cultural significance, Weird Al did a spoof of Teen Spirit after all. But I settle to 4, because the 2nd half drags, and it’s simply not something that gets played (by me) very often. 4/4
Nevermind propelled grunge and alternative into the mainstream, solidifying Nirvana as the face of Generation X. They championed inclusivity, challenging the dominance of pop music. The album's polished sound, distinct from their other works, deserves an enthusiastic 5 stars from my 13-year-old self. However, at 45, I acknowledge Unplugged as Nirvana's true masterpiece, unveiling a different musical dimension. Hence, I'll settle for four stars. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 8 STAND OUT TRACK - Drain You (As a little exhausted of Teen Spirit now)
Loved it. I remember hearing a few of those songs, but never had listened to the whole thing entirely. Looking forward to hearing more.
In 1991 I was discovering Christian music and only listened to Nirvana when it came on radio or MTV. I confess that today was my first time listening to the full album. Pretty sure I threw my neck out again during Stay Away. This album rocks!
It has some really great moments. There is a reason that some of the songs were never hits though
Listened millions of times, prefer in utero.
Half the album are bangers and an easy 5* but unfortunately there are a few average songs peppered in there. Probably 4/5*
Smells like teen spirit obviously very good. Other songs also decent. I like singer's voice, it's not too whiny which is usually what happens in alt-rock albums. Wish guitar solos were a bit better but that's about it. 3/4****
Enjoyed - their sound is very unique. Guitar riffs were super interesting, a lot of muted chords etc. Pretty dark lyrics as well!
5 stars at the beginning and loses its energy towards the end, still very enjoyable
Classic album, which made music history. The bangers still holding until today
•Owned •I remember how scared I was when I first heard them as a kid. It’s funny to listen to this in that context and hear the anger and energy now. •4/5
So I think Nirvana are one of the most overrated bands of all time BUT I can still say that this is a very good album, just not on the same seminal level a lot of people hold it in the highest of esteem for (and I get why that is). STTS is a good opener but I've heard it too often, though it does kick off a strong start. Come As You Are is a better song, then the rest of the album doesn't hit those standards. Lithium is okay, Something In The Way was done a lot better by Avatar, and oddly Territorial Pissings is quite good but doesn't get brought up as one of the better songs on here. I'll give it a 4 because it's better than a lot of stuff we've had but it's a low 4, not close to a 5.
Absolutely iconic start to this album, think there must be something wrong with people who don't feel the energy at that start of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Not many albums with a better 1-2-3 than that. Great range of pace, bit of switching styles, but definitely losing something after the first five or six tracks - which isn't even halfway through. The rest is fine, would probably merit a 3 on its own, so we'll split the difference between the start and the end and call it a 4.
Great album, but the melvin’s…
Really great album overall and has some absolute amazing songs. There are a few songs that drag it down. Endless, Nameless was the worst song on the album for me. In Bloom remains a favorite, with Smells… close behind
Bra
Klassiker. Wild und ungestüm. Tragisch.
Leur 2ème album. C'est un hit après l'autre cet album-là. Du très très lourd.
i enjoyed this and realised like most of these albums i hadn’t listened to it as intended and i was wrong for that, it was a cool album and filled me with nostalgia and made me wanna be as cool as the era and the band.
Ok. Sure. Nice drums Andy!
Is this a great album? Yes. Overrated? Probably. It is an important record for sure, the impact it had on music in the 90s and after is undeniable. I love it and even though I've heard most of the songs dozens of times, it was good to give it a listen back to front; I probably hadn't done that since I was a kid.
Kurkle bane
There is a lot that i can say about this album, but i will just leave it at that it is one of the purest forms of music as self expression i have heard
aight classic
good
This would be a 5 but that last track kinda sinks it down one point. I know that when it played live it they’d go ape shit and actually destroy their gear and just be unpredictable. But this is a studio album and the sound of it brings it down because I’m not in the audience to see that kind of spectacle.
Funnily enough, I was just looking at this last night and thinking about listening to it, but then I thought "this is bound to show up on 1,001 albums." And look, here it is! And, I don't know, it's kind of boring? Maybe I just know it too well - I listened to it incessantly when I was 16, and now it just lacks a certain something. It's still a five-star album for what it did, and what it meant to me at the time, but tracks like "Polly," "Territorial Pissings," and "Breed" just don't really do anything for me, although "On A Plain" shines through as one of their best songs. "In Utero" is a better album; it's more jagged and less listenable, but also more coherent.
Classic, not a whole lot to say.
Yeahhhh
Almost a five for me
One of the most iconic albums ever recorded. There is nothing else to mention about the effect Nevermind had on popular music. However, it is very uneven when viewed as a single album instead of a generational landmark. The first half is stacked with all-time hymns and some of the most iconic alternative rock songs ever recorded. Apart from a couple of songs ("Drain You" and "Lounge Act"), the second half has plenty of unmemorable filler songs.
####
Music seems better and singer less annoying than the other Nirvana album I listened to ([[In Utero - Nirvana]]). It's pretty good - I like it. I feel like I can appreciate the drums and guitar a lot. The last song: Endless, Nameless is really not my cup of tea. I don't like it at all, almost takes a whole star off the album lol.
How was this the first time I've ever sat down and listened to this album front to back, but I'm pretty sure I've heard each individual song before. Tell me this isn't a pop masterpiece.
an important piece of the Grunge movement, it has grown on me over the years.
I like it
Previously rated: MTV Unplugged In New York (3/5) In Utero (3/5) ************************************* A very good album with some classic songs. It probably deserves a 5/5, but I'm honestly I'm tired of hearing many of them. Best track: Come As You Are
I'm not as enamoured with Nirvana like a lot of people from my generation. Do I like it, heck yeah.
def already heard lol, but its good
In Bloom fetzt schon Something in the Way ist sehr melancholisch schön <3 a classic of an album
Bamtan
8/10 , great album but not my taste , maybe it will grow on me later
Good album. I can see why it’s considering genre defining. Rip kurt
Yeah this fuckin rules it's an iconic album. Hit after hit. Very cool for walking around Chicago. Kinda weird once I entered the art institute and still had this on. Another one I would love if I was a teen in the 90s.
Her we are now …
Classic one of my favs
Not bad, not my usual type of music, but its definitely good music.
This album… is good 💥
So many hits.
Denna struktur liknar den man hittar i de flesta System of a Down låtarna. Några runner-ups är In Bloom, Come As You Are, och Lithium. Something's In The Way försöker kväva mig och suga ut all betydelse i mitt liv och sätta mig i evig bakfylla .
Kudos!
Största klassikern. Fortfarande kanske inte asbra kanske 4
Classic album
8/10
Lekker albumpie Classic maar nie veel geluisterd
I never think of myself as a Nirvana fan until I hear them “in the wild” and realize just how many of their songs I know by heart. This album captures a bit of everything that makes Nirvana great.
classic
Hat einfach mega gut
Interesting
I probably like the first part more because I know the songs better, but overall it's a fun album to start your morning with.
Holds up
Not the band's favourite I believe. I really like it, and it has happy memories.
Least favorite nirvana album starts off with least favorite nirvana song, mostly due to overplay. That being said, it’s got pretty interesting/enigmatic lyrics for a chart topper. Still a great album though. Great blend of melodic pop and punk. Polly, on a plain, drain you are favs. Since they always have that raw edge, I think I tend toward their melodic stuff the most.
If you shot me in the head right when lithium needed I’d say I was listening to a pretty perfect album when I died. Album falls off real hard imo starting with Polly, and then something in the way and maybe stay away are the only other notable songs. I think he’s not saying very much, and the power of the instruments (and Kurt’s voice as an instrument) kinda maybe primes people to interpret power in the lyrics, and if they get meaning out of it that’s great! For me though, I lie in the “lyrics sound good but they’re often nonsense or nothing” camp. 5 classics off rip
Best one yet!
81/100
Played this to death back in the day. Still stands up now. Definitely an album of two halves as well.
Favorite Song: Smells Like Teen Spirit Least Favorite: Endless/Nameless Not my favorite album, but hard not to give it a 4 considering its 4 mega hits. I don't love the sound and I'm not a Nirvana fan, but it is still worthy of a 4 in my opinion. Hard to rate it fairly because this is the first album I'm reviewing, but we'll see how this ages as I listen to more. I have a feeling it will be above average in terms of the albums available to review on this website so that is why I ultimately gave it a 4.
Interesting that this would come up on here so early, and well timed as my opinion on it has changed quite a lot in recent months. Always thought it was pretty overrated, but after numerous recent listens i've started to really come around to it. It's incredibly well produced, well written, and some of the deep cuts on the album have started to shine through a little. I still think the first half outshines the second with it's huge hits, but I have a lot more respect for the album now than I once did.
Listened already
The first half of this seminal album is flawless but I found the second half a little bit dull to be honest. Its very difficult for a millennial like me to objectively review a record and band which has influenced so much of the music that would come after, so much of the music I would listen to and grow to love. I had to add an additional star to this review purely for that.
The hits are amazing anthems, the others are a bit rough
# 41 : Whoop Whoop! Finally something good. LOL. Breed
Ok, it's a good album for the kind of music it is. I think I'm just bored of the music since it was on such heavy rotation (and still is). It's very well produced
Classic
Good ass rock album.
Good
Some great tracks. Some total noise.
Yes! Especially after listening to the Nico record! Classic! With only a few average songs, this is a great record.
It's a classic album filled with iconic songs. For whatever reason, Nirvana has never really clicked with me though. I understand a lot of their appeal, but I don't fully GET it.
4.5 drit bra utenom siste sangen
4/5 - Easy to listen to, high energy. The non-singles didn’t really stand out. I’d have liked a slower song/more emotional or vulnerable sounding or lyrics maybe somewhere in the middle. Overall a killer album.
Kind of top heavy in my opinion but definitely a classic anyway
noice. a trip down memory lane. this album was with me during my most rebellious teenage years. 9/10.
Good album
3rd listen. I feel like I should say something about this album since it’s so important, but there’s not much I can say. I definitely have liked it more on repeated listens, though the repetition still bothers me.
Never liked this album in high school, insulted it greatly tbh. But I listened to it after year after watching Joker and loved it. Listening to it again on this list and loved it even more. Think I mostly didn’t like how I’d heard so many of the songs repeated on the radio. But in the album as a whole, perfection.
Very overplayed album but still one of the best of the 90s with a lot of influence on artists after it. 4.5/5 for me, it's a comfort album I return to a few times each year Highlights: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, Territorial Pissing
Now this is music good old classic rock
A lot of good songs on here. I've always liked this album
I loved this album. I was so pleasantly surprised by this as I hadn’t heard anything outside of their singles before.
Album #6 First time listening to a full grunge album (believe it or not) and what a good start. You got your heavy power chord driven bangers like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Lithium” while also having more mellow and melodic tracks like “Polly” and “Something in the Way”. My favorite track would have to be “Come As You Are” which starts on this simple but addicting guitar riff, but builds up the intensity onto the second half of the track and introduces the power chords.
For once a decent album to review that has drawn so much from the previous punk scene and then went on, as a standalone statement of musical work to inspire and give direction to so many follow-on groups. It was very much a short lived career for the inspirational Curt Cobain, but what a brilliant album he left as a legacy! Having read Dave Grohl's book last year, it was a real raw narration of the slum tours, the dramas, the drugs, and the pure inspired passion these guys had to create music, drawing on so many of their idols like Iggy Pop. And there again... had we not had Nirvana... would we have ever got the explosive sound from the Foo Fighters.
As the kids say - this slaps! Was an album I listened to when my music tastes were changing and I was exploring rock. Songs are memorable and nostalgic. Much preferred to In Utero (which I had earlier in the week).
first impressions: ofc i assumed I'd listened to this album before, but i honestly didn't remember some of the songs. it feels a little disjointed but in a way that makes the despondance and anger of some of the tracks more palatable. ofc this feels to me like the classic PNW grunge sound at its essense. after listening through: easy 4 post-reading reviews/wiki: haven't done so, don't really plan to. this band's history leads to so many weird true crime wormholes that are just...not great. relisten?: added "In Bloom" to my 100 favorite all-time songs (2023 edition) playlist; probably won't listen through again. I get it.
7,5/10
I’m not the absolute biggest fan of his voice nor am I a radical person who either absolutely hates this hand or claims they’re the most amazing to ever exist. I think that this album is very influential and important to music, and that’s what is impressive. I also am a fan of the songs I know.
Yep, classic Nirvana. Classic little penis album cover. Standouts: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are, Lithium, In Bloom, Poly, Drain You, Something in the Way Rating: 4.5/5
An absolute classic. While it may not be their best work, it is undeniable that Nirvana presented themselves as a force to be reckoned with on this album. A bit too polished compared to their earlier (and later) stuff, but that’s ok.
good and created a genre but not something I would replay alot
Awoooo
The first half of the album is great. I really enjoyed it. The second half the album does drop off some. The last song needs to be skipped. It gets into screaming music which is completely unnecessary. It is certainly better than a 4 but not a 5.
On the one hand, this is a very iconic and genre defining album, on the other hand, that genre happens to be Grunge. Which is fine, but I never particularly warmed-up to it and I'm not buying the "It's Nirvana, so it must be great" - argument. The album is not bad by any means, just extremely overrated. I'll give it 3 for the music and .5 for it's importance. 3.5/5
Great album
Something about this album makes me want to dress all in black and beat up poor people in dark alleyways
Fantastisch album gewoonweg
An absolute classic. Great sound, lots of anger, yet a pleasure to listen to. If it didn't have Breed, Territorial Pissings and Endless,Nameless on the album then it might've been a 5/5.
I believe the hype. These man were going crazy on this one
What more can be said about this, looses it a bit in the middle but starts and ends really strong
This is one of those famous albums that I was exactly in the right age group to become a fan of. For some reason though this album, and Nirvana in general, never clicked with me the same way as other albums or bands from the Grunge era. Listening to it today, I totally get the impact that it had and why so many people love it but it isn’t one that I’m likely to play again anytime soon. I still think it’s worth at least a 3.5 which I’ll round up to a 4 because it is a good album. It’s just not my thing.
smells like teen spirit is iconic. in bloom is very happy and nice
Album przede wszystkim ma dużo ożywczej energii pomieszanej z rozdzierającym serce smutkiem (Something in the way tutaj widzie prym w łamaniu serduszka).
Classic!
KNOWS NOT WHAT IT MEANS WHEN I SAYYYYYYYY In bloom is Nirvana's best song. Meet me at the ok corral if you wanna fight. GOTTA FIND A WAY, A BETTER WAY WHEN I CANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAJFAEJGJSDJGJJJJJAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Where does spermatogenesis occur? This album is so hit or miss, thankfully it's mostly full of hits though. I either loved the songs or absolutely hated them. Anything ear-piercing I can't get behind.
90s banger
Classic. Way over played but for a reason.
- haha funny album cover - 8/10 - in utero better - swimming baby, not drowning
just great. There's a lot of great songs other than the popular ones.
.
100
I really enjoy this record!! Incredibly influential album. I wish a few of the songs strayed more away from the power chord mess that the rest of the album represents. (and one that doesn’t suck like Polly)
Great album and five stars in its day
Infectious energy and grit with solid melodic songwriting - maybe gets a tad repetitive
Nevermind is the second album by American rock band Nirvana and is certified diamond in the US. It was the band's first release on a major label, and as a result features a more polished, radio-friendly sound than previous works. Award winning Nevermind became an unexpected critical and commercial success, topping charts around the world, being one of the best-selling albums of all time, dubbed as the "voice of a generation", reintroduced punk & grunge music to the mainstream, and was inducted to the National Recording Registry in 2004 for significant historical value. The smash hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - that could be argued as the track that carried the album- was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and is still a popular song to date. This may be the first time I've listened to this album in its entirety in one sitting and damn it was a good time. I have to admit that some of the tracks are forgettable and could even be from another punk or alt rock artist, but the unforgettable tracks are the ones that give this album meaning. "Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come as You Are, & Something In the Way" are blockbuster hits in my opinion that make this album almost perfect. If this album was filled with hits like those, than there'd be no question that this is the best album of all time. Instead, this is one of the greatest albums, but perhaps not the best. I rarely rate things as 5/5 perfect - because in my mind "perfection" is basically unobtainable - but this album was so close to being rated 5 stars by me. This staple of the sound of the 90's is a must-listen for any music fans.
First time i've fully listened to this and i really enjoyed it. Prefer that live album though, cracker that one.
Pretty fire album. What a crazy outro.
Klassiskt album.
Back half keeps it from 5-stars, but still great stuff.
P much all hits.
Klassík. Kunni ekki að meta hana þegar hún kom út, fékk hana í jólagjöf frá Gunnari bróður 1991 og skilaði henni. Hversu heimskur var ég. Fengi 5 stjörnur ef ekki væri fyrir Endless, Nameless.
The first bunch of songs are great and 5-star worthy, but it gets weaker in the second half.
A good, but not great album with some standout tracks. More important for its effect on rock music than for its content.
Nirvanas a band I put off listening to because people be sucking their dicks way too hard which is a shame cause this is genuinely a great band. Great mixture of hits and songs that could never touch the radio and that one song from that Batman movie unfortunately
A classic! One of my favorite albums! There are many very good moments and some alright moments. Overall a very great album!
I've never listened to this album straight through and doing so was a great experience. I wish a world existed where could have seen what Kurt could have made while still having Foo Fighters. I suppose I should be happy with what Kurt gave us and his influence is still present in so many good bands today.
While there were a couple songs I found unenjoyable (Territorial Pissings no thank you) I really like their sound as a whole. It’s dark and eerie but pleasant, and the simplicity of the instrumentation mixed with the complexity of the sound is pretty damn impressive.
I've never liked grunge, but Nirvana does it so well. The drums are fantastic, many good songs, a couple I don't care for.
If I had rated this when it was released, it would have been an easy 5 stars. It's hard to know if excessive playing has diminished the value, but it's at a 3.5.
The first song is an anthem, of course: I like the soft/loud thing which I guess they got from the Pixies and the clever turns of phrase. The next two tracks are catchy. The more straight ahead punk tracks I'm not fond of but they're better than most straight ahead punk. "On a Plain" and "Drain You" are basically saying, we've run out of ideas so we'll regurgitate some of the chords from our hits. I read a story about the young man who sued them for using his baby image on the cover, but I can't remember how it ends.
classic for a reason. crazy that "smells like teen spirit" is the opener. I found Kurt's vocals way more interesting this go-around than I used to. also amazing drumming from Dave.
Good album, a main album from grunge, however ending of the album could be better
Something in the way, come as you are, Polly. Overall like this one better than In Utero but I hate the last song with a passion.
Territorial pissings On a plain In bloom Drain you 7/10
It’s very hard for me personally to evaluate this album. I remember as a teenager being completely fixated on the grunge movement of the 90s, the way that it flipped popular music on its head and the morbidly emblematic demise of its figurehead Kurt Cobain. And yet when I played Nevermind for the first time, I distinctly remember feeling quite underwhelmed. It was far from a bad album - tracks like “In Bloom” were the epitome of grunge to me - but it certainly didn’t sound quite as revolutionary as the circumstances around its release would have me believe. I would argue that while all canonically ordained classics eventually lose a bit of their edge (partly through over-exposure, partly via the march of time), this album fairs a lot worse on that front than even the likes of DSOTM (of which I had a similar opinion). One thing that hasn’t been blunted in the last 30 years however is the great songwriting present on this album. My personal favourites have always been “Breed”, “Lounge Act” and “On a Plain”, but who can ignore the misfit anthem of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or the brooding “Come as you Are”. Cobain’s lyrical sentiments are sincere (as is his painfully angst-ridden voice) if not especially subtle - no doubt he was a troubled guy but it’s almost as if he’s just stringing together a bunch of platitudes about depression or isolation. Butch Vig’s polarising production choices are frankly sublime to my ear, no doubt polishing Nirvana’s rougher edges but also accentuating the gutteral emotion underpinning these tracks - the overdubbed vocals do render the choruses a bit samey though. On the whole, this is an important album with some fantastic tracks and even if listening to it today might not suggest as much, it’s deservedly regarded very highly.
The first song is an ignition. First half is just gas and speeding on through. Then the turns towards the end get a little wobbly but it straightens out and finishes strong. Just like a crazy joyride with a bunch of kids with nothing to lose. Fun to be in that car. Scary to be in that car. Hell of a memory to have.
Learned I'd really only ever heard the A side of the album... back half songs were pretty new to me.
Amazing
Loved this album since the first time I heard it. Needed a little more grunge. 4/5
classic
09/05/2022 Listened to this one on 09/06, and the truth is that this album is good, but after having In Utero given to me for my first album ever on this website, I have officially declared the latter as the superior nirvana album. — Yesterday was my last day in SA. I’m driving back to Houston atm. I had a beautiful long weekend. Thinking about the future is scary, but also hopeful.
Great album
A classic that I forgot I like
Swag
generally a pretty neat album, fav is Lithium least fav is the last song in the album, kinda soured the whole album a tad bit
What a rip-roaring start to an album! Really strong opening half but trails away a bit after Lithium. This would have been three stars, but Smells Like Teen Spirit gets it an extra star
Top 3 songs: 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit 2. In Bloom 3. Lithium First half is full of bangers second half is not nearly as good.
Haven’t listened to this record in a long time, but I remember liking it a lot when I was younger. My favorite on Nevermind is “Something in the Way.” A lot of these songs still hold up — “In Bloom,” “Come As You Are,” “Lithium.” Nirvana is an important and influential band because they brought grunge to the mainstream. Kurt Cobain was particularly adamant about crediting his influences and supporting contemporary grunge bands, which is the part of his legacy that I admire the most. The songs are great, the band had an amazing chemistry, and their sound influenced much to come. I’m giving this album a 4 to account for my personal tastes because it’s no longer a 5 for me (compared to when I was younger and idolized Cobain).
I wasn’t able to listen to the whole album but it started with some classic tracks that deserved 4*. Hopefully it continued in that vein !!
7/23/2022 - ALBUM #177 Today's Album: "Nevermind" by Nirvana - This is an album that any music fan should already be familiar with, but in case anyone missed it, this was the largest album in grunge rock and stands one of the most acclaimed albums of the 90s. The opening track, Smells Like Teen Spirit, gets unrelenting praise for being an anthem of it's generation, and I have to say it is hard to compete with the raw punk energy in this track. The track In Bloom follows as another really stellar track and demonstrates this wall of sound that they seem to achieve so easily. The way the band is able to fill up sound as just a guitar, drum set, and bass is unbelievable. Many of the tracks on this album are defined by Kurt Kobain’s unbelievable songwriting chops; there are simply no choruses on this album that miss. However, the instrumental performances really elevate things as well. The quirky Kurt Kobain guitar solos (See In Bloom, Breed Solos), the disco-like drum beats from Dave Grohl, and the super-melodic and hypnotising basslines from Krist Novoselic (See the beginning of Come As You Are, Lithium) make Nirvana such a complete package sonically. There really isn’t much to improve upon as a rock band when you have a kickass and impressive sound, insightful lyricism, and some of the best chorus writing of the 90s. The track Something In The Way is a standout track as well for showing off the dark mental issues Kurt was covering in his lyricism and stands as a really chilling song to listen to all these years later. Obviously, the tragic end of the band draws both positive and negative attention towards the band’s work and this album in particular, but as we will see in the upcoming review of their next album, In Utero, the band were absolutely not out of steam at this point and had a lot more distance to cover before Kurt Kobain’s suicide. Overall, this is an absolute staple of 90s grunge and just rock as a genre in general. Give this one a listen if you haven’t; it can be a bit abrasive at first, but it is an album that rewards patience for sure. Highlights: Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Breed, Lithium, Polly, Territorial Pissings, Drain You, Lounge Act, Stay Away, On A Plain, Something In The Way, “Endless, Nameless” Score: 8.75/10 THE 90s grunge album. Energetic, dark, thoughtful, beautiful.
I can certainly see why it has the stature it does. Not something that really aligns with my tastes but too good to rate lower I think.
Somehow I hadn't ever listened to this whole album? They had a greater range than I'd expected from the singles.
unbelievably good start soo close to 5 for me
p656. 1991. 4 stars. Point deducted for suspect lyrics, filler tracks on the 2nd half of the album, and for ripping off "More Than A Feeling" by Boston. Apart from that, this is pretty good. "Here we are now/Entertain us/A mulatto/An albino/A mosquito/My libido/Yeah"
This is the sort of album that makes me feel like I'm sitting half buzzed in a loud smokey basement living room with a bunch of slightly older kids I don't know it well. Sometimes I'm into that.
Total sellouts. Blame Courtney Love.
Best Song: Smells Like Teen Spirit. Brilliant kickoff to the album. It truly sounds like angst personified. This song in particular might be the high water mark for grunge as a genre. Worst Song: Stay Away. This is the bad side of angst that makes me cringe. Although I like the instrumentation in this track (especially the driving drums), the lyrical choice to continuously scream "stay away" has the energy of a teenager whose mom has just reminded them that they need to clean their room. Overall: This has to be one of the most front-heavy albums I've ever seen. The first half is full of hit after hit, only for the album to tip off a ledge somewhere near the midpoint into fairly forgettable grunge tracks.
A truly classic album if I ever heard one. Very front loaded and honestly a bit uneven in the second half. And because of that it's not exactly one of my favourites in the alternative rock landscape.
Back from in the day (when my primary exposure was massive overplay of Teen Spirit on MTV) I discounted Nirvana and grunge in general and Cobain in particular, and later sort of shrugged at his death. Another rock and roll drug addict unable to negotiate fame. Later I came around on some grunge era acts like Screaming Trees and Mudhoney and after listening to Cobain’s Unplugged set, decided I’d been wrong there too. There is a lot of strong stuff on this, though there is also some definite filler, and the protracted noise jam at the end of the album is a tired trope I’d love to see retired. Still an iconic entry in its genre and time.
I think this is their best album, as do most I suppose. There are some all-time classics on this one. But I still can't find way to give Nirvana the cred others give them. I don't think they started grunge thought they for sure were the most popular. I think they were just poppy enough for radio air play which meant all the others got the back seat. I also find many of their songs to be nearly indiscernible from others. That said, this is still a pretty great album.
Minne meg om når eg va 10 år
Smells like teen spirit is overplayed but love the rest of the album
Genre: Grunge 4/5 A 90s rock classic, Nevermind is Nirvana at its best: loud and abrasive, yet angsty and thoughtful. Kurt Cobain and co. take their material and put it into an alt-punk blender and hit frappe. This album, famous for its naked baby cover and its massive hit Smells Like Teen Spirit, is much more than what makes it so popular. It's a collection of well-arranged, well-written, and well-played songs that play out like a live performance would, with peaks and valleys in all the right places. While the hard hitters on this album (Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Drain You) are absolute jam sandwiches, Nirvana also does a decent job of slowing it down and providing us with some of 90s rock's best ballads (Polly, Something in the Way). The other tracks on this album, as well, are great little musical nuggets that any rock fan should be able to pick up and enjoy, as well as recognize. The performances on this are really a wonderful thing as well, with all 3 of these fellas really playing their hearts out. This album is a classic listen that has truly stood the test of time, and won't go away for a while.
goody good
Riktigt bra
I shit on Nirvana a lot because I don't think they really "invented" Grunge or "revolutionized" music in the 90s. The fact is that there were plenty of other (and better) Grunge bands - they just got famous early. Still - they are the simplest, most raw, most garage-bandy Grunge band. And they made a lot of kids want to pick up guitars and start creating music. And - I like most of their songs. They are a good band that everyone should hear - just one of many, though. They aren't gods. :)
Legendary and simple all at the same time. Groundbreaking with only a few chords
I'm not as in love with Nirvana as the majority of people seem to be. This is clearly a landmark album though and I can't really fault it.
Nevermind is a rock/grunge classic, a must listen for all. The first half of this album is full of top chart songs that are nowadays super recognizable and one might say even a bit overplayed. The second half is a bit more experimental and will not suit everybody's taste. The cover is also as iconic as the album itself.
Nostalgic
It's possible to like Nirvana but also think they are overrated. This is a very good album, but I don't think they were the second coming. I wish Kurt had decided to stick around longer to see what they would have done over the course of a 30 year career. Then maybe they could have been ranked among the all-time greats. 4 stars.
Can't deny the impact on so many bands that I love but far from my favorite of the genre.
Jednostavno klasik.
13y/o me bi bio jako ljut što 23y/o me nije dao 5 ovom albumu.
you guys hear about this "nirvana" band?
"Oh no, I know a dirty word" (Smells like teen spirit)
Great album. A little too clean to be my favorite of theirs. 9/10
Tough album for me to be objective about. I loved this album, but I also think its overrated. I think there were a lot of bands doing similar things at the time and Nirvana never particularly stood out to me as doing any one thing particularly well. The classics have been over played more than most top 40 hits and the fanaticism for the band was also annoying when it reached its peak. Yet its still a good album. No real filler, every song is good and the band rocks. Still gets 4 stars from me due to all of this, but my actual enjoyment of listening to this now a days is more like a 2-3
I was the right age for this when it came out and I never felt even then that it "represented" me in any way, and I still don't understand how it became some sort of world-changer. Always thought the track sequencing was off, too. Nice to revisit occasionally, though.
þetta er veislu plata something in the way er uppahaldið mitt easily 4 stjornur korter i 5
Great album. The grooves are awesome and the lyrics deal with meaningful topics of depression and ostracism. 8/10
Classic album with some great songs. Slightly overplayed but we'll deserved.
Fantastic. Riffs sound huge. Acoustic isn’t bad either. Joe liked it a lot.
Frábær plata. Polly er uppáhald.
I love you I'm not gonna crack!
Heck yes
It's hard to separate this from the cultural zeitgeist. The first half of this album is absolutely iconic. The latter half does get a little more screamy than I'd remembered
Being as monumental as it is, it loses a bit of focus on the second half. The first half however is as strong as the legacy itself.
4/5
I was a teenager when these guys were massive and all the girls fancied them. On this basis I never listened to them, i mean you couldn't avoid teen spirit but i closed my mind to them. 20odd years later and with the hormones settled a great gutsy album with memorable songs, shouting and screaming. It's where punk meets grunge and has a little pop baby.
Great album, doesn't quite warrant the endless adulation it garnered at the time but comes pretty close
classic
Listened before as a teenager, still holds up!
Samalla tavalla hankala arvioitava kuin Offspringin Smash. Aikanaan lähes täydellinen levy, mutta ei tälläistä puuroista rähinää nykyään jaksa ihan samalla innolla ainakaan kauhean suurissa annoksissa. Toisaalta omassa genressään kyllä aivan eliittiä ja todella merkittävä pioneeri aikanaan. Ehkä eniten nautin niistä vähemmän tunnetuista biiseistä jotka eivät ole ihan samalla tavalla kuuntelussa kuluneita. Kolmonen tuntuu kuitenkin liian matalalta arvosanalta eli nelosella mennään.
Its a solid record, obviously the known hits and a couple tracks i couldn't care for but a couple neat discoveries.
Pretty good album. Teen Spirit was my favorite song
