Grungy!
The first third of this album is outstanding. So sharp and sounding incredible 35 years later. That is the Nirvana I enjoy listening to. In comparison, the rest is shouty and screamy - it almost undermines the brilliance of those first 5 tracks.
The level of angst is not something I relate to (fortunately) but it is generally a pretty good album. The first five tracks particularly impress. Especially the excellent Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are.
I've visited this album many times, because of it's reputation, significance and influence. I like rock, even "heavy rock", I like melodic punk, but I've never warmed to this album. I just don't get it. I quite like the first track, maybe because I heard it a lot. I suppose I don't like "grunge", but I like quite a few of the Foo Fighters stuff and have 2 or 3 of their albums 🤷🏻. Maybe I just don't like the Nirvana sound? I rate it as 3 at the most, giving a nod to its significance.
I like grunge but I’m not a big Nirvana fan. I feel like the great songs on this album are canceled out by the Kurt screaming tracks. The album is great for its impact, not its substance.
This one is really hard to rate. One on hand, you really can’t tell the story of music without this album. It clearly had untold influence on music ever since. And it’s definitely an emotionally charged album. Not a lyrics guy too much, but the angst, anger, and apathy come across in the lyrics just as much as it does the instrumental itself. And I’ll also say from a musics perspective, there’s some non-traditional chord changes in here which I find interesting. All of this culminates in an album that was new and novel, and I appreciate that. On the other hand, I just really don’t like it very much! This kind of music is so far away from what I enjoy. Music that just makes you angsty is annoying and whiny to me. So I’m going to give it a 6/10. Because as an album, it’s impressive, iconic, and has such a strong aura to it. I don’t like the aura, but I give points because it sure is strong.

Ik denk dat heel veel muziekliefhebbers een periode hebben gehad, waarin ze nirvana interessant vonden. Meestal in de puberteit. Dit album vind ik een puberalbum of je nou puber was toen die uitkwam of niet. De boosheid, anti autiraire thema’s en smaak die wel ergens heen gaat maar nog niet helemaal ontwikkeld is zijn thema’s die goed aansluiten bij de pubertijd en dit album. Daarom hebben veel van dit soort nummers nostalgische gevoelens voor veel mensen. Ik vind het wel een beetje sneu als je als volwassene hierin bent blijven hangen en niet verder bent gaan kijken.
This one tends to get me in trouble: I don't like this album very much. Yes, it was hugely successful and hugely influential, but I never quite understood why. The songs are all fine - some ("In Bloom" and "Lithium" for me) are better than others, but none of them blew my mind or justified its enormous commercial and critical success. I'm not saying you're wrong for liking it, but it's nothing special to me. Sorry, Kurt.

Lithium is as good as I remember and Stay Away was a great surprise. But still, mostly I had apathy to their music. It's not really good nor bad for me. I get what people like in this album, but not all of this works for me

I think I heard most of these for the first time playing Rockband. Some good stuff but a few of the tracks are just screaming.
Although I think this album's quality and musical influences is highly overrated, I can appreciate the long term cultural impact it has brung.
189/1089 Nirvana just aren’t really for me. This is the third album of theirs i’ve had on here (out of 3) and i do appreciate the singles, i just feel like the mood i’d need to be in to fully enjoy their music is quite specific and not one i feel often. i appreciate the music and the impact, i just don’t love listening to it faves: smells like teen spirit, come as you are 61/100
Proper grunge shit. Makes you wanna scream and break shit. Very fun to listen to, especially when you're working out. But Kurt Cobain's voice isn't doing it for me tbh.

What a rollercoaster. First 5 songs had me about to give a 4 but it all went down hill and by the end I'm resisting giving a 2. I guess I don't like "real" grunge. Give me the radio stuff

I realize once again that death makes records great. A few good tunes here, undoubtledly energetically delivered, but also plenty of fillers.
So many thoughts on this one. I was in High School when this came out and was witness in real time to the immediate revisionist history being written after Cobain committed suicide and the framing of him as the tortured soul of our generation. It has never sat right with me all this time that this guy who rejected fame and materialism was forced down our collective throats by the marketing machine at the forefront of a wave of rock that was all about rejecting the materialism of the 80’s and hair metal only to then be the face of the next wave of rock music by that same machine. I also feel like Cobain was so full of himself that the only reason he is still so well loved is that he died before he could reveal himself to be as pretentious as Billy Corigan. Finally, I really feel like Nirvana gets more credit for the grunge revolution than they deserve. Alice In Chains was breaking through first. Pearl Jam was more popular than Nirvana from 91-93. I’m not saying they weren’t integral to grunge’s success but they were not the end all be all they are made out to be. I intentionally never listened to this album before yet I still knew all the words to 10 out of 13 songs. It’s definitely been a popular and lasting influence on culture writ large, but grunge as a whole came and went by 96-97 at the latest, making way for the next iteration of more punk influenced bands. Which makes me wonder why grunge gets representation but other generations of rock not so much on this list.
This is a classic rock album, with enthusiastic drumming, crazy guitar riffs and powerful but admittedly unpretty singing being prominent all throughout. But I’m not sure I’m all in with this energy; I prefer soft rock, which in my opinion is more pleasant. If you like classical rock, you’d like this album, but it wasn’t too enjoyable for me. This album cover has to be one of the worst of all time, though.
I really wished I liked grunge more than I do. This album is so highly acclaimed, and it certainly has a few good songs... but man I could have done without so much screaming (and the equivalent of screaming on each of the instruments. I hope I can learn to like this kind of music more, but maybe grunge and punk will just be genres that I always don't really like. However, this is still one of the grunge albums I've enjoyed most, and I liked a lot of the softer and slower songs. Favorite Track: Smells Like Teen Spirit

A good classic - I feel like this is the rock album u need to start with, but I completely skipped over it. I think my favorite songs were - Polly and Endless, nameless. Not my favorite of all time, there were some skips, but overall a solid album.
I mean it’s a good album and I’m okay with loud music. Maybe it was the circumstances. Besides the basics no other song stuck out.

I like most of the song, even though they sound incredibly similar lmao. My favourite is Come As You Are. Why does Polly sound like a pavement song lmao Apart from that, i dont think its all that lmao. Might have been a huge massive difference back in the day, buttttt it does not hit for me.

At first I thought “man I forgot how great this album is!” And then I thought “man, I forgot how hard this album falls off after Polly.” This is a very good album, but the second half just doesn’t have the oomph to get it over to great. It’s no Ten by Pearl Jam.
Made me nostalgic. First few tracks are classics, but it tapers off quick after them.

first half? strong. singles? strong. songs everyone knows? prescient. poor guy got david grohld. he wqnted to make good music and dave grohl grohld him, sigh. like the punk sentiment of the back half but feels super same samey. oh well. next time.

1. SLTS is a classic. Listening to your first Nirvana song is a rite of passage for any youth discovering their own identity and this was mine. 2. “Nature is a whore / bruises on the fruit / tender age in bloom” is pure grunge poetry and the guitar moment on this song is really hot. 3. Like everyone else, I was obsessed with “Come As You” Are at the height of my Holden Caulfield phase. 4. Eh, “Breed” is whatever. 5. Another classic with “Lithium.” No notes. 6. “Polly” is not my favorite. 7. “Territorial Pissings” is very ragey 8. Can say this was my first time hearing “Drain You” and I love it wholeheartedly! It’s gross and frantic and the interlude is a wild little journey. 9. Neutral about “Lounge Act” 10. One of my dear friends from high school showed “Stay Away” and I still love it to this day— the chaos of the drums and the screaming “God is gay!” at the end. 11. Something cryptic about “On a Plain” but I can’t complain~ 12. “Something in the Way” is the album’s best song and something about saving it for the end is so poignant. It describes such gnarly coldness and yet it’s so enveloping in its rhythm. 13. I usually love a hidden track but I think “Endless, Nameless” should have stayed hidden as it ruins an otherwise perfect finale. Maybe it should have been called Needless as it’s needlessly long.
I quite liked this album it had lots of like horrible history drum beets in it. My fav tracks are the boring ones smells like teen spirit and come as you are. I think the thing I personally didn't like was the songs didn't have depth as in lots of chords witch is something I like. I think I definitely should give it another proper listen but it was a jolly album

It’s good, but it’s not great. They were better albums by Alice In Chains and Soundgarden in this era. Still don’t get the hype around Cobain and this band they never change the face of music just media hype.

Great album, and I know I will be in the minority giving it a three. Classics like “Smells like teen spirit” and “Come As You Are” stand out, but the rest just didn’t do it for me. Nirvana is a staple of grunge rock, and I do think that they have tons of talent. That being said, all of their music just holds a depressing feeling within, and that I can’t get behind.
The interesting thing about this album is how very anti-pop the lyrics are, but at the same time extremely pop oriented in the song structures. Very catchy and memorable riffs of course, but the fact that the songs are so reliant on hooks and clearly built for immediate response doesn’t make for a very rewarding listen for me personally. Other contemporary grunge bands like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden have a much more layered and heavy sound, which I appreciate more over Nirvana's punk and pop influence. I understand why this got mainstream, and it remains a landmark release in a special era of rock. Best song: Something In The Way Worst song: Stay Away Cover check: Ironic and instantly memorable
Um clássico do Grunge e do Rock dos anos 1990. Um desfile de hits. Um bom disco, apesar da presença de dois elementos que me desagradam bastante: guitarras elétricas ruidosas e vocais exasperadamente e irritantemente berrados.
Album 16 3/5 Hell yeah. Good stuff. That first 3-song lineup is pretty insane. Nothing about the album as a whole feels groundbreaking listening to it beginning-to-end for the first time in the 2020s, but I wish I knew what it felt like to hear this album for the first time in 1991.
Man, hard for me to rate this one since Bleach was on constant rotation in the car for me and my friends while I was in high school, along with Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins, Chili Peppers pre-1991. On Nevermind's release date, after school was out we drove to Tower Records, bought it, and immediately popped it in the cassette player in the car. Our minds were totally blown. But then what used to our own underground scene of music was not so underground anymore, since by the end of senior year 9 months later, all the jocks and our valedictorian were listing to Nevermind. It was kinda like something died for us after this album was released, followed my Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, Chili Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Pearl Jam's Ten. We had moved onto discovering other bands in late '92 as a result, like Pavement and Monster Magnet in their early years. However, my personal beliefs and experience don't take away from this being a great album for the songs and for the impact it had around outside my group of friends. We had moved on from the "hair bands" way before this was released, so this album helped everyone else catch up to where we already were.
Var inne på det redan i förra recensionen av Nirvana, att här finns punkenergin kvar och det är det som gör det här till ett mycket bättre album. "Territorial pissing" och i synnerhet "Breed" är fantastiska. Flera låtar har en del av den energin även om de inte är punklåtar, t.o.m. "Smells like teen spirit" faktiskt. Green Day har ju byggt en hel karriär på att försöka låta som "Stay away", minus sättet att sjunga/vråla. "Come as you are" har jag alltid gillat (bästa låten tillsammans med "Breed") för den låter som nåt annat. Den sticker verkligen ut på skivan både som låt men också i sound, trummorna är mycket lägre mixade och det distade gittarsoundet är ett helt annat, inte alls den skräpiga hårdrocksdist som används i stort sett rakt igenom annars. Just Butch Vigs produktion skulle man kunna nörda ner sig i en hel del. Jag tror att det är en hemlighet bakom denna skivans succé. Han gjorde även om samma trollformel några år senare med Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese dream" och fick dom att lyfta kommersiellt. "Polly" och "Lithium" hade jag gärna strukit, dom tillför ingenting för mig. Hade gärna sett samtida "Aneurysm“ istället som finns på samlingen med udda spår "Incesticide" och alltid spelades live. Tillför något gör däremot avslutaningsspåret tycker jag, som ju är närmast provocerande slö och har cello, en hint om vad som komma skulle på unpluggeden senare, den plattan lär väl dyka upp här också så småningom. Strunt samma får en trea i toppskiktet
Bättre än In utero. De låter mer färdiga här än på efterföljaren. Gott om hits. Bra men inget mästerverk.

I liked this more than I thought I would. Once I made it through smells like teen spirit it only got better. Will even consider listening again and possibly bumping up to 4.

Had most of the classic Nirvana songs, but I've never been a big Nirvana fan. It was good to hear some of their lesser played music but still did not enrapture me like it does with some of the fans. Solid 5/10 album
It’s a little hard to remember 35 years on, that despite the ubiquity of half this album on MTV in the fall of 1991 through 1992, it’s really not 12 classics, but is like a lot of records from then, before, and since, a collection of what the band had at the time: several singles, a few album cuts, and...filler. As in, I can’t even remember listening to a lot of the back half, probably just skipping from Territorial Pissings to Something in the Way. That’s fine! Most bands would be happy to have a generation-defending lead track and a bunch of forgotten album cuts, but Nevermind has the reputation of being The Album of the 90s. Instead, it sounds like a group that was ably assisted by their producer, using a particular aesthetic for constructing a radio/tv-ready rock record, turning several songs into audience-friendly, palatable material, but also several songs that just sound like they were part of the live set at the time instead of The Album of the 90s. In short, it’s understandable why they were as confused as anyone else that this pretty good, but also fairly rote punk-adjacent album would rival Michael Jackson in sales. Again though, the ubiquity. It wasn’t like I didn’t like having In Bloom or Lithium show up on MTV after school. Just a year prior this would’ve been some hair metal ballad from Poison, every hour on the hour. Yet, by February of 1992 - mere months after its release! - I was exhausted with these songs and rarely just threw Nevermind on. To this day, it’s In Utero that I’ll listen to, as much of a difficult experience as that was in 1993.
Da jeg var ung og begynte å høre på Nirvana, likte jeg egentlig bare Smells Like Teen Spirit; de fleste andre låtene på samleskiva, synes jeg i stor grad var ganske kjedelige. Samleskiva får Nirvana til å høres ut som et mye dullere band enn det de egentlig er, fordi det graviterer mot soft cuts som About a Girl, Pennyroyal Tea, Dumb, og All Appologies, uten å balansere dem med de mer rocka cutsa. Og det sier kanskje sitt om hvordan Nirvana traff mainstream radio og ble en pop-sensasjon: det eneste sporet "folk" liker fra Bleach, er det eneste sporet som ikke passer inn der, men som godt kunne vært en del av Nevermind: About a Girl. Nirvana hadde soft side som ble dominerende på Nevermind, hvor selv sporene som støyer litt mer, i stor grad er radiovennlige alt. rock tracks. Skiva har åpenbart flere spor som er rettmessige ikoniske (Smells til Lithium er en ganske rå run), men ofte synes jeg den mangler edge -- både i produksjonen og i låtskrivinga. Sånn sett er In Utero et steg i riktig retning, de er litt flinkere til å innarbeide støyete innflytelser samtidig som videreutivkler det som begynte å høres ut som Nirvana (spesielt Come as You Are, Drain You, og Something in the Way fra denne skiva).
Jeg blir ikke lenger skuffet over Nirvana. Det er rett og slett slik de er. Jeg tror dette er et band hvor myten om dem har vært litt for fremtredende og skadelig. Det er mye kul låtskriving her, spesielt Polly og Something in the way. Hvis dette hadde vært et ukjent band som jeg ikke hadde hørt om tror jeg at jeg hadde likt det bedre (dog ikke veldig mye bedre). Men dette er ikke et ukjent band ingen har hørt om, dette er en av tidenes aller største og mest innflytelsesrike band, som er kjente for sin råskap og massive kraft. Men her finner jeg ikke råskap og massiv kraft. Jeg finner igjen, helt ok, fin, overraskende kommersiell og glatt 90-talls rock.
I mean, this is so seriously overrated, but it's good. The most overrated band of all time, and this is the only album I can stand listening to from them.
i really thought i was gonna love this but i, shockingly, didn't? i mean there are some very good songs on here but the rest fall flat for me. this probably would've been insane to hear in 1991 but as a teen in 2025 i just don't gaf. disappointed but again it's not terrible it's a decent album overall it's just not what i expected it to be (a life changing experience)
Despite being a teen through the grunge years, Nirvana never really landed with me. Yes, they're important. Yes, this is fine alternative rock music. Thank you, Kurt and co, for saving us from glam rock. For that reason alone, I'm giving this 3/5.
Yes it’s an important album and the first few songs are undeniable jams. But then it all falls apart. It starts slipping away with Polly and goes downhill from there. It becomes excessive and indulgent and, if that’s the point, well there you go. But a few great songs does not a great album make and it’s just not a good listen all the way through. If I’m being honest, this music hasn’t aged as well as, say, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam’s work has, at least for me. This feels trite, or juvenile now, whereas the others still feel connected to something deeper. Maybe I’ve changed, and maybe that’s partly because of music like this, but it doesn’t really speak to me anymore. Maybe it never really did and I was pretending it did at a time when I still cared about being cool. Anyway, that’s all I got this week, doc. Thanks again for listening. You sure do have a comfy couch.
Recently, I saw a news article about a famous album cover from years ago featuring a photo of a baby swimming completely naked. The person depicted as a child in the photo, now an adult, sued the album's creators for child pornography. This album was precisely the one at the center of that controversy.

This is the album of all time which includes the songs of all time. Frequently imitated never replicated. Close to perfect. I don't enjoy listening to it though.

I might have written this on my In Utero review, but I used to not like Nirvana and I have no idea why. This is maybe my least favourite of the 3 albums which is controversial but I tend to prefer their more aggressive and weirder sides, thinking Territorial Pissings on here where Kurt is screaming his head off by the end This one has a bit too much of the poppy, 'mainstream' (for lack of a better word) sound that just isn't my favourite. Breed is an example, the vocal melody on the chorus is almost that skate or pop punk sound that I don't really like, despite the beefy bass. That would've been a favourite if not for that vocal melody I do still like this one though. 3.5 Highlights: Come As You Are, Territorial Pissings, Stay Away

I bought this CD once upon a time for a nephew. Wonder what his Father thought of that! Rock grunge, shouty and screamy, and I'm so cool with it. Listened before? Y Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, ⭐⭐⭐ Like it. Saved several tracks.

I REALLY liked the first half (fave was In Bloom), but the second half sort of fell off for me
Said something different at first but I think what I am trying to say is this. There are moments on this album that feel completely gravity defying and like moments of actual creative epiphany (main riff in In Bloom, the chug of the verses in On a Plain, Territorial Pissings, ) but other songs (Lithium, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are) feel melodically more like jingles or ringtones than songs to me. Whether or not this is Nirvana's fault is up for debate because I think it's inarguable that their style was subsumed by lesser songwriters and, over the course of many years, this caused what was a pretty interesting sound to end up sounding quite watered down. It has aged poorly in other words. I can't really blame them for this but I do think whether or not Soundgarden ever wrote Black Hole Sun I would have found Come As You Are irritating and melodically flat. For the most part though this ranges from bearable to quite impressive even despite the zeitgeist flattening it so can't give them lower than a 3 for this even if I am probably not going to purposefully revisit many songs! Would rather listen to Pixies or Melvins or many other comparable bands tho Fav song: Endless, Nameless

I went into this only having heard the classics, which I love, and was expecting the rest of the album to hold given the legendary status of this album. After hearing the rest I was actually let down. The album is good and influential, but the hits were just on another level compared to the rest.
Several gems, teen throwbacks and cohesive screaming, if that's your thing!

Me ha decepcionado bastante la letra, si el instrumental no fuera tan bueno esta canción no hubiera triunfado.. Le puse un 7 porque es icónica. Pobre Polly. "Never met a wise man if so it's a woman" facts, solo por esa frase "Territorial Pissings" merece estar en mi top. Abusa muchísimo de repetir letra para rellenar, a veces se siente extraño que repita lo mismo 7 veces. "Something in the way" por algún motivo se escuchaba tan mal que durante el primer minuto no entendía lo que decía.. además se me hizo eterna y soporífera. QUIERO SALTARLA DIOS. Está al nivel de Polly aunque en lírica sea algo mejor, 0.5 mejor sigue siendo mejor, verdad? Pff "Endless, nameless" no se entiende nada, es como si se hubiera tomado un diazepam y estuviera cantando. Top 3: Stay away, Territorial Pissings, Lounge act Least Fav: Polly Honestamente pensaba que Nirvana al ser un grupo tan admirado y conocido escribirían buenas canciones pero la verdad es que me han decepcionado.. Definitivamente lo mejor del álbum es el instrumental. Me extraña tanto que este álbum solo tenga un hit.. Y ahora yo qué nota le pongo? No merece menos de un 2 por la instrumental pero es que la letra deja mucho que desear.. Score: 4.3 Lo recomiendo? Sí, deberías escucharlo porque es una de las bandas míticas de los 90's pero no es lo que esperaba, podría escucharlo de nuevo de fondo mientras hago otras cosas.. Son 13 canciones y dura 49m, perfectamente podría saltarme 3 o 4 canciones.

I remember hearing Teen Spirit in November of '91 (on my 21st birthday). I dug it. That riff and melody stuck in my head all night long. But as much as I liked it, it didn't strike me as the kind of thing that would completely change music just two months later. By that point, though, I was already tired of it. This is a good record, no doubt, but I have always thought it was a bit overrated. The lyrics never spoke to me (frankly, I still find myself eye-rolling at certain phrases), but I've had people wax on about how meaningful they were to them, so YMMV, I guess. The music is definitely cool. Their sound is huge, and there are hooks and riffs galore. The chords are often flat-out wild, which is kind of crazy for punk. But I don't know. I've just never loved this. Not sure I can put a finger on why; it's just one of those things. Maybe it's just how introspective and whiny it is. (Also, am I the only one who hates the cover?)

5.5/10 Very unusual one - I really liked the first half and really really didn’t like most of the second half. At its best when it is doing melodic grungy hard rock, at its worst when it is doing noisy punk/post punk stuff. The bad stuff sounds much more like Foo Fighters than I remember. Best: Lithium
I like a few songs but the whole album is kinda tiring.
Classic, legendary, but so overproduced for what made the band great. It sounds dated now even as the songs still crackle with Kurt’s songwriting and turns of phrase (I’ll never get over “never met a wise man / if so it’s a woman”). Weirdly, because of the regional debut of Bleach, you could call this a sophomore slump, albeit one that flipped rock upside down and shook out its lunch money. Still, there’s a lot better to hear from the dudes - even the live stuff is better than this, there’s just too much polish.

I appreciate nirvana less than I respect them as artists, but that respect grows each time I listen through an album of theirs. While the A-side is a breakthrough of unparalleled proportion, with hit after hit, the B-side falls short for me; especially with the studio freak out of Endless Nameless. It has an undeniable place in music history for its influence, but I can’t get myself to enjoy most of the songs on the album; between the very minimalistic songwriting and Cobain’s singing voice I can’t quite get into it like a lot of other grunge albums

This is good but not excellent. Famous good tracks but for me there's something missing. At times of release I really didn't listen to this and most likely I won't listen to it again for a while.
When Nevermind came out, I had just found out about Bleach and was kind of bummed that they went so much softer sound on the second album. Obviously it grew on me and the A-side became really familiar, as I kept on listening to A-side. I in fact have the "Euro misprint" version of the LP. It's a pretty cool record, even if it doesn't have the roughness of the first album.

I've never really paid any attention to Nirvana. I was aware of them but didn't associate any particular songs with them. So it was good to be able to recognise quite a few songs here discovering that they were by Nirvana. I didn't mind the album at all but the band won't become an overnight favourite of mine.

It’s good. Listened to it too much as a lad, so it’s lost a lot of impact. Bass lines still stood out (in a good way) in both terms of writing and production. My old copy didn’t have Endless Nameless, so this was my first listen….🤷🏻♀️ Top track: Lounge Act

Nirvana successfully sanded down the edges of noise/punk rock enough to be widely popular but still sharp enough to be edgy. I can see why this had such a following. But I really prefer the more raw and ugly sound of In Utero. 3.5

Easy 3 stars. Completely fine, overplayed, too loud, would rather not listen again. Just not my genre no matter how badly I want to like it. I don't really connect with shout-singing - Nirvana! This is gonna be interesting - First song: Shouty vocals - This feels like a sound that was copied so much that it's not interesting anymore, even if it was pioneering. It's perfectly agreeable music, but not wowing me - My goodness the hits on this album have been way overplayed through the years. I know them without ever actually having listened to them myself - Yeah sorry this genre is just not for me. I wish I could see what everyone else loves about Nirvana.

Not so much game-changing for its time but game-reminding for those of us who'd heard similar before this. Grunge, but with the right amount of punk attitude. Fast forward over 20 years later and they're now selling socks & cup gift packs with this pasted over it...cutting edge always goes blunt in the end, I guess. Oh, and trivia buffs? This is actually their second album if you get asked the question.
Not a world class fantastic album, I don’t even enjoy it. But I do remember the excitement around it when it finally hit the Midwest.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is iconic of course. I like Kurt’s harsh, gritty vocals. So much personality and colour. Some catchy guitar riffs and sick drums. Sometimes a bit repetitive. Some strange lyrics lol.
Some huge hits and some huge misses. I can't deny the power of the first 3 tracks, and several others on the album are great compliments. I feel like it would at least be a 4, but the misses really miss - so, wanting to skip close to half the album feels like it brings it down.
Kurt's delivery is flawless, but I'm not the biggest lover of Grunge so this is the best I could muster.

I'd only ever listened to 3 Nirvana songs before-- Teen Spirit, Come as You Are and Heart Shaped Box-- so this was an interesting experience. This album has a truly mythic reputation-- and I guess that's why I was a little underwhelmed. It's definitely a good album and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the seminal, life-changing experience that I feel a lot of people have with it-- granted, as a zoomer in 2025 I'm listening to this in a context that's very different from, say, a 22 year old listening to this in 1991. Perhaps because I have always existed in the world Nirvana created, its impact is somewhat dulled. I think this could grow on me with repeated listens, but for now it's a 3.5/5 (I still haven't figured out if we can do half-ratings here. If we can't, it'll probably get a 3/5). Aside from the first three tracks, my favorite song was for sure Endless Nameless. Yeah.

Everything worth merit is already well known and well lauded, 'In Bloom' and 'Something In The Way' the best examples. Smells Like Teen Spirit is of course great In Bloom I found dull I like the riff in Come As You Are and the weird tune of the chorus (similar to the odd tune at the beginning of Lithium) Breed is pretty fun Same with Lithium Polly is ok Territorial Pissings is pretty cringe Drain You is ok. The start of it matches the start of Teen Spirit - I notice a lot of the songs have a similar tune, or pattern? Lounge Act - pretty fun Stay Away - this is my favourite after Teen Spirit Love the honesty of On A Plain - pretty good song in general. Really like Something In The Way - love the one-note harmony. Endless, Nameless - oh no; my least favourite style of 'singing'. Oh wait nice riff after the initial horror. No wait back to the travesty after that. Oh wait nice guitar after that. And back to the cool riff. But now the horrors are back. We knew they would be. Discordant cacophony at 2.30 is cool though. Ok sweet everything from 2.30 onwards is great. I just need an entirely instrumental version of this track. Great ending to the album, though.

Less hardcore than I initially thought it was going to be. I was really surprised by the lyrics, they sound like poetry when read without music. I like the more 'chill' songs. I now understand why Smells Like Teen Spirit is so liked by so many people.
While still living in Edinburgh, thanks to Al and Andy this is one I couldn’t escape. Hard not to enjoy and relieve the early moments of a band on its way up, with a sound that kicked out the 80’s and started something from scratch. I’d listen to most of this again.
I can't understate how the post 2000's Shin Megami Tensei soundtracks / shoegaze has made me be able to appreciate this sorta music. When guitar go fuzzzz me be buzz. With that being said, that prob moved the album from like a 4/10 to a 6/10, because this sorta music ain't my style. The hits / the first half of this album are pretty decent tracks, but because of how popular this style of music has become, i've become very mellow to it, if they have more of an ambient-experimental album i would probably enjoy it more hmmm. Oh and something in the way was pretty cool as well. I can really see it's mass appeal for sure, it screams "teenage rebellion" or whatever Ben says it means haha. (also i was watching anime when listening to this (shoutout to RE:zero) and the episodes were pretty peak and it helped with the vibe so that might of helped) Fav: Come as You Are
The album has shown some brilliance, with the first four songs deserving the praise they deserve. However, for me, this album struggles with having too many loud and obnoxious parts, which is highlighted in Lithium and Lounge Act that shows brilliance apart from these parts. Although this album's significance is pinned to these parts preserving this youth sound that still holds it, it doesn't resonate with me. I can understand the brilliance, but it’s not my style of music. Favourite song - Breed
In Bloom and Something in the Way are maybe the best songs Nirvana ever wrote. But overall, there's too much screaming for my linking.
I’d never really cared or explored Nirvana’s music before this, so it was interesting to get a taste of their sound. I tend to be more interested in lesser-known obscure rock and not generic mainstream releases. This project is one of the most well-known ones of all time. However I think that there was a lot of Grunge/Alt-Rock coming out in the decades during and after this release so the fact that this amassed so much popularity may just show how good quality it is. The band had some pretty cool melodies, and while I didn’t think I even knew any of these songs, I found myself recognising many melodies and lyrics. Overall a cool listen.

Ik was best wel fan van het unplugged Nirvana album, nu dan de originele nummers en ze klinken inderdaad flink anders. Behoorlijk stukje steviger dan het unplugged album en dat werkt voor mij niet altijd even lekker. Pre-listening thoughts: this is the fourth highest rated album on the website at the time I’m typing this. This is Nirvana at their creative and commercial peak. I fear I’m going to piss people off with my rating. Post/during listening thoughts: every time I hear Smells Like Teen Spirit I DO think about the muppets barbershop quarter cover and I’m not sorry. Why have I heard almost every song on this album???? I don’t even like Nirvana. Maybe they were just that widespread during the early 2000s still when I was growing up. The lyricism on this album is definitely unique within grunge and I do appreciate that. The acoustic tracks are also nice. The first half of this album is so strong and then the second half is really not as much. The last thing I expected here was to not like this album as such, but to actually listen to it all your way through. It’s not my favourite , but I can now see what so many people love about it, even if I don’t.
I can't believe it took this long for Nevermind to pop up, and more importantly, I can't believe it took me this long to listen to a Nirvana album start to finish! I guess more or less it was just how I expected a Nirvana album to sound like. Even though I would say I like rock, admittedly some songs were a bit too heavy even for me, so the low-ish rating is a me problem (Endless, Nameless wtf?). Of course going into it, I already knew Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are so I really jammed to those two. I wouldn't say anything else particularly pricked my ears, except for Something In The Way which is such a hidden gem! I don't envision myself coming back to this anytime soon, but that being said, I think if I persisted and gave this a couple more listens, it might grow on me.
Although I don't like 90s punk rock, I can appreciate that this is a good album.
Honestly the never ending unremarkable electric guitar sound just made me exhausted. Only bass lines were nice. I understand why this album is not bad but I completely don't understand why everybody think it's great

A classic album in the genre and some songs that I have heard throughout my life. Grunge isn't really my favorite type of music though so no high score from me.
Debating between a 3 and a 4. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Something in the way are both 5 star songs to me, but the rest of the album is just ok. I really love Nirvana’s vibe, mystique, look, and multiple individual artists in the band, but apart from a few songs, I’m not super into their sound. I’ll be interested to see if there’s any more albums from them. This is a high 3 alongside the Killers album.

While I really liked many bands that came out of the grunge era, Nirvana was not my favorite. Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden were/are much higher rated for me. While I like many of the songs on here, they are a bit too raw and rough for my liking. I also think bands with such an enigmatic frontman always appeal more to the masses and the press. That being said, this is a great album that still sounds good after all of these years. Side note - I had always thought this was their debut album.

Man, I just had to hear the MTV unplugged thing...OK whatever, never mind. No escaping this record. It had the impact of a meteorite, although I still don't entirely understand why. It's good. Just good though. I grew up in Seattle during this time - I'm not cooler than thou - but alongside all the noise-rock happening around then, Nirvana was kinda the pop strain of it, the accessible version of 'grunge'. I understand it hit home for a lot of people. That's great. But for me it was always just fair enough.
I know I’m a hater. This album probably deserves 5 stars sheerly for the fact that despite me being insanely annoyed by it, I know of basically every song. That’s gotta count for something. The live album goes in, and I love their debut record though.
When this first came out I hated it with a passion, it seems that time has either mellowed me or the music. Aside from the last track I found it to be an album that I could listen to, there's still songs on it I would happily skip through but the chart one seems to have grown on my. Still only a 3/5 though

One of the first full albums I've actually listened to, way back in the late-2000s (alongside Primus - Frizzle Fry). Wasn't much of a fan back then, don't know if i'll change my mind now. UPD: I certainly enjoy songs on this one way more than I did before. At the same time, it's not the kind of music that usually fits my mood or vibe, and the fact that I haven't returned to Nirvana properly for nearly a decade sorta speaks for itself. Good album, but doesn't pass my ratings well.
Yes, groundbreaking, a bit hard to connect to it for me because teenage/twen angst and anger isn't really where I'm at right now. At all.

I like Kurt — I do believe he is talented and has one of the most remarkable voices in rock 'n' roll music history. However, loud ≠ good. "Nevermind" greatly oscillates between genuine talent ("Smells Like Teen Spirit") and noise ("Territorial Pissings.") It seems that Nirvana's objective here was to give their audience tinnitus (even more prominent in "Bleach.") Three stars because I've a soft spot for "Lithium" and "Drain You."
I was always on the fence about Nirvana, I liked some of their stuff, but didn't think it worthy of the praise they got.

A classic album and its influence on music cannot be overstated, but I reckon it was just fine. I knew the big hits well, but hadn't heard all the songs on here before, and I ended up getting a bit bored by the end. Not bad, not for me.
I didn’t dislike the album. The music is pretty good but it just is boring. And maybe that’s because I’ve consumed so much music that was probably inspired by this album, and I’m a big fan of Live Through This. But yeah, probably won’t listen to this again, but if I hear it playing it’s fun.
I’m not really one for the grunge style but I can’t deny how talented they were. And thank god there’s a eclectic mix of songs on the album and that everything doesn’t sound the same.

Lots of anger
I know this is a great grunge album, and I can hear why, but I don't enjoy this sound any more. It's a dark place, and I don't want to go back. I'm rating it for enjoyment at this point in my life right now, and it's a 3.
I used to absolutely love Nirvana, but the pure amount of over exposure of this band has changed how I feel about them.
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a blatant ripoff of the hit 1991 song “Sideways” by Men Without Hats. Change my mind (you can’t).
I like this band more now than I did when they were active in my teenage years. Grunge is still not my favorite style of music.

It was a good album until everybody found out about it and suddenly were into good music. Too bad radio sapped it for all it was worth. Nirvana was nothing special, although their music was good. I was alive when we referred to alternative as college radio. When influential bands were coming up. Nirvana is influenced. I was listening to Pixies too. But unfortunately I didn’t start a band that made decent music and had catchy hooks and melodies that shit me stardom before I was ready. I still don’t understand why Nirvana caught on the way they did.
Nevermind has lost none of its power. A listening pleasure for friends of grunge.

Maybe I've heard this wayyyyy too much. Definitely genre defining but I rarely find myself seeking this out.
Four great singles surrounded by lots of filler. Overrated album
I played this half a dozen times, but I still only like 'Smells like teen spirit' and 'Come as you are'. The rest, meh.
Nirvana are a perfectly passable band who make perfectly passable music that all blends together into a blob of fine. Nothing was bad, but by the time Something In The Way and Endless, Nameless I was starved for anything interesting and these two tracks did give me a little hope. I just described this album to a co-worker as one which sets up to dive only to walk back down the stairs. Favourite track: Something In The Way.
Obviously some great songs early on but also a lot of the same idea repackaged. At times there's also just a racket. Generally overrated but that doesn't mean it's bad.
Started off strong but find I can’t particularly remember much of the rest of it.
I’m not going to do any hot takes here and say this album is bland, a bit forgettable outside 2 or 3 tracks, or imply that Nirvana as a band was always just mediocre. I won’t do that. All I can say is personally I’m not a big fan of the band. I thought some other grunge bands did the sound better, and had a lot more interesting material. I do recognize and understand this albums place in history. It gets my respect for that, but it’s not a great album. It’s an important album that should not be anyone’s favorite past the age of 16.
Most of the album is excellent. Just can’t listen when it turns into yelling though.
3/5. I did enjoy the first half of this but there are a few tracks throughout the album that just kind of annoy me more than anything. I think I missed the train cause I've just heard better punk and grunge rock. Sure these were awesome when they came out, hard to see it nowadays. And I'm all for music that is supposed to make people upset but it's not the lyrics that are making me upset, it's just the bad songwriting. Again, I enjoy the overall aesthetic just could be a really good EP rather than filler through half of it.
I've grown to appreciate Nirvana a bit more over the years, but I never really got into them. I was more of an Offspring and Soundgarden fan. The album's good, and I can't deny the impact the band had on music, but I've never understood the deification of Cobain. I wonder how they'd be received today if he hadn't died. A bunch of the tracks in the middle sound similar and start to run together a bit. I like the tracks that break the mold—"Lithium" and "Something in the Way" for example. "Territorial Vibes" has cool lyrics, but the music sounds like a Foo Fighters song—I wonder how much input Dave had on this one. "Endless, Nameless" has a cool post-punk, almost goth vibe to it. Speaking of post-punk, it will forever bother me how "Come As You Are" is bigger than the song it ripped off, Killing Joke's "Eighties" (who ripped off the also great song "Life Goes On" by the Damned). I feel like this has aged and is now reminiscent of a particular period in time. But doesn’t translate across time. Still a good album.
Another in the series of albums I heard through the wall of my brothers room growing up. I'm way more familiar with this one but I dont know if that means its good. A lot of these songs kind of blend together in the middle. I think I just dont care for grunge. Come As You Are is pretty good.
There’s a few pretty good songs on here but overall it’s not really my thing. It all gets pretty samey by the end but “Something in the way” is great!
The bangers on this album are BANGERS, but, if I'm honest, a lot of it falls flat for me. I can't even imagine the boundaries that were broken with this release, so I have the utmost respect for that aspect. Aethetically, this is super cool and grimey. Sonically, this album is either very flat, or unnecessarily noisy, at almost all points. It's a mixed bag, and a lot of the mid-tier songs are so overplayed I feel burnt out. I think the unique "underwater" vibes of the best tracks are unique and the real standout. I wish more were in that vein. Fav tracks: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, In Bloom
Growing up in the 90’s, this is a cult classic! This was weird to listen to as an adult compared to when I played this on repeat as an angsty teen. Noticed a lot more rage & disordered thinking that I did not vibe with as much. Would not skip any song that came up on a playlist, but would not seek it out myself.

A solid album that's considered a classic, though I wouldn't grant it that status, necessarily. There's heaps of great songs but it just sounds overproduced, overplayed and overhyped.
Not 100% my type of music but overall very good. That final song of the album should be thrown in the bin.
I really enjoy some of these songs, I really hate others. I think that balances out to about a 3.
Some classics that most people love, some misses that I just couldn’t finish. Especially the last song of the album I had to turn off.
I'm not sure I really want to listen to this album. It's kinda cringe worthy now. Polly is a little better now. I think it was better when I was an angrier person
