Reviews (page 8 of 9)
Anfänglich ordentliches aber dann stets nerviger werdendes Album. Das schönste war das Ende zu erreichen.
for a dance music album didn't find it quite danceable to. Expected more, slightly disappointed, 1-2 good tracks tops. 2.5/5
I am so conflicted with these electronic album. It’s just not a good listening experience. And I have spent years in the dance scene and loving it in that context. I recently saw Justice live and holy shit was that fun. Aside from a couple of bangers, I couldn’t listen all the way through in a single go. The glitch sound is too abrasive, the beats too repetitive. This must be what the Dead is like for Deadheads: you just can’t understand the live experience from the record.
There is a song on here that literally sounds like my computer circa 1995 trying to connect to AOL, but with a beat behind it. This is not an entirely negative thing. A/S/L?
D.A.N.C.E is fire, the phantoms felt like TV static. Good edm, but also it's edm so not great. The lords edm ig Why was one minute to midnight, not one minute 1.5/5
Looking through the song titles I'm guessing this is techno/EDM because I've never heard of this band or this album. I bet Daft Punk hate these guys for ripping off their sound. They're a couple of space helmets away from being a Daft Punk cover band. The Party, with its stupid Kesha lyrics, is awful. These songs all sound like knock off Midnight Express soundtrack songs.
This album was new to me, and I played it through twice. I found it pretty dull stuff and unengaging in a way that dance music really should not be: almost soul-less. It's not an album I'd be likely to play again. Probably some would have been OK as a 12" single, but a whole album of it grates a bit.
Stop! Please!!!
Damn, I wasn't even through the second song and I was already wishing this album was over. I get that this is some breakthrough in electronica, and there were a few aspects of it I enjoyed, so I won't give it a 1-star, but it's just not for me. Honestly, dance music and electronica for the most part just aren't for me.
I actually just passed up on the chance to see this band in concert. I think I may have made the right choice, they have a couple of songs that I really like, but most of it doesn't quite click with me.
I wanted to turn this off 2 songs in. I'm sure there's a time and place, but it's not here and now. 2.
I wasn't expecting to hear a very random Devo song sampled in Stress. Decent music for the genre. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Perfectly fine French dance rave whatever this is. Just not something I’d listen to again. 2.95
Respectfully, why is this on this list? Did we run out of the infinite amount of music to consume that it was necessary to be included? (TBF that could be said about a good amount of these albums. I digress). Children gang vocals are my worst nightmare, so that did not help. Like the beats are fine… but honestly could’ve gone without the vocals. As the album went on it got worse..
Works on the background while doing office work, but not the kind of record i would listen intentionally
Certified boredom, that’s what this album is
Not entirely my thing
Sounds like Undertale But in fact it is not video game boss music you are just supposed to listen to it Genesis/DANCE/DVNO brought this up from a 1 to a decent-strong 2
Pretty bad
Another album and artist I’ve never heard before. Don’t really know what to make of it. Obviously not made for my demographic and someone my age but I did find myself liking it. That’s the power of music of music I suppose. Not an album I would buy or listen to again 2.5/5 24/4/25
Didn’t hate it, but altogether not my thing.
4/10
"Opera-disco" apparently. Enjoyed the few operatic bits, the rest was too abrasive. Pulsing beat, grating electro.
Electronic sampled opera-pop.
trotos
Like a worse Daft Punk
..
я бы не стал такое слушать, но что то "интересное" в этом есть
Not convinced - I love a couple of Justice tracks but an album full is a bit too much for me!
I would enjoy the video game that this is the soundtrack of
Not my cuppa
Some great grooves let down my lots of atonal interjections
This is not my thing… but I liked some of it… not the ones that made me feel like I was having an anxiety attack
How exceptionally French - not that there’s anything wrong with that. There’s a lot wrong with this album, though.
2.5
Irritating. Gave my daughter a headache while we were listening.
A few bangers, probably better than I was expecting. High 2s.
Avausraita jees
It was mostly fine as background music, but a few of the later some got a little irritating to me
24/1001 I don’t really know what to say, it wasn’t my kind of music, it just sounded like repetitive noise, which I know is a bit rich coming from someone who dabbles in drone from time to time. The first few songs where actually decent enough, but by the time they got vocalists involved it just fell apart. Nothing worthwhile really. 2/5
Not my thing. Some cool sounds, but the songs don't do a lot for me, and I'm not into the proto future funk production.
Not great. Reminds of background music for old GameCube simulator games my boy used to play. Addictive and mind numbing.
My brother definitely had this on in the car for a whole term when we were on the way to university. It's not the worst. There's something here, if you've got the emotional range for dance music, which I don't. I've heard D.A.N.C.E. more times than I need to. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Not my thing
Merde. That means shit in French.
Thought I would like this more than I did. I knew DANCE which is a fun song, the rest is mostly just noise.
Collection of electronic dance tracks good for discoteques or clubs… but not very exciting in its entirety as an album. Then it is too much synthesizer programmerne rather than real music. Adding vocals might have improved the overall impression, but there are none..
Daft Punk shmit
Some of the sounds on this album are killer. That said, you don't get to pick and choose which samples or tracks you hear on a song, and there are also a lot of parts that aren't great like most of the vocals and the anxiety provoking noise. This was a one and done.
There are some inspired bits of electronica on “Cross,” but every time I really got into a song it was derailed by random laser sounds.
My husband asked if I was listening to two different songs at the same time. Tells you all you need to know.
D.A.N.C.E is a classic, but it's about all this album has going for it. It's overall not bad, but electronica gets repetitive to me.
I like electronic. I think the music of Klaus Schulze, the ex-drummer of Tangerine Dream and THE pioneer of electronic music, is great. Some comments on this album have compared the music of this album to that of Jean Michele Jarre. I really liked the latter as a teenager. I was particularly taken with Oxigène back then. So I was curious to find out what electronic music the unknown French band Justice played on their album. I quickly got the impression that I wouldn't be interested. A large part of the album played in the background. Shortly before the end of the album, the music got on my nerves and I stopped the whole thing. I can easily do without this album. 2/5
Electronic music. There were several tracks that were painful to the ears. Stand-out: Valentine
i've tried to get into this like 3 separate times but i just don't like it that much my bad 2.5/5
Meh. Not for me
Music I'd think of with John Wick or Matrix... a lot of synth and electro/house styling.
This was not my bag. I like electronica but not so much the EDM, apparently. Definitely not the right thing to play early on a Monday morning while going through the weekend e-mails. Too hectic, stopping and starting, it seemed more high stress than high energy. I could see this inducing bad trips and paranoia if taking the wrong substances while playing this. Not sure what the right substance would be.
I like electronic music, but couldn’t get into it.
D.A.N.C.E. is a classic, of course. Problem is the rest of it isn’t good. Repetitive uninteresting techno beats doesn’t make a good album.
A bit enjoyable at times. The tracks with vocals really brought it down for me.
Not sure I could dance to this, and certainly don't like listening to it. I appreciate its supposed influence, but top of the list of the 1001 I don't need to listen to.
I’d probably need someone who knows the genre to explain why this is a standout record. On my own I don’t know why.
Surely, there are 1001 better albums out there…
More string synths and less sawtooth waves please
It’s okay… sort of a poor man’s Daft Punk. There are some not bad moments like Phantom Pt II and DVNO for some reason I find catchy. Might be the fruity 80s nu wave vocals. But overall a bit too much late 00s glitchy tricks and not enough melody or interesting rhythms.
Sample orgy with electronic experiments. Maybe it'important, but nothing for my ears.
This and prodigy back to back is a lot
This is #day14 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's another name/album I haven't heard before. Given the approach that music is made on this one, I'd rather revisit DJ Shadow's debut. Yes, it's kind of smart, but somehow... it doesn't stick. Maybe because the mix of genres is too overwhelming. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of French house or those vintage disco sounds. I don't know. So, it's 2 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day15, which is also the beginning of my short vacation (of course, I'm not taking a break from the challenge). So, don't let me down, random generator.
Not my style at all, but not a terrible listen. The songs transition pretty seamlessly, so it's almost like one long electronic song. Phantom & Phantom II were jams. I probably wouldn't seek it out again, but I didn't hate it.
If there was a Great Value version of the movie Bladerunner called "Cyborgkiller EX", this would probably be the soundtrack.
Not really connecting with this one. Started blending together after the first track.
48 minutes of ear ache. Too many elements that added nothing to each other. The only vocals were whiny and annoying. This wasn’t even an original way of making bad music.
Kind of annoyed this includes the recent edition of the book because these post-first-edition selections are rough. Not Bad bad, but sounds like nothing after a few tracks.
Sounds like an Animal Crossing soundtrack
Man high on acid at Euro Disney during the Main Street Parade: You know what would be sick? If Kidzbop did Daft Punk! Justice: Say less. And that's how D.A.N.C.E. was born. That's my head canon, anyway. Sometimes I wonder if Robert Dimery's book was a cover for some secret military research study on the best albums to use for psychologically torturing prisoners of war. This was one of those times. Look, this wasn't the worst electronica album I've been assigned from this project. I don't totally hate the techno Bee Gees vibe of a lot of it. But the album takes a turn for the worse around "The Party," which features some weird Kesha meets Nicky Minaj "rap." After that, it seems to be a whole lot of sirens and obnoxious sound effects that represent everything I hate about this genre. Also, I'm not really sure what's so innovative about this album that landed it on this list. How does one gauge the evolution of looping beeps and boops to recognize something groundbreaking? If you held a gun to my head and asked me to correctly identify if one of these songs was Justice or Daft Punk, I'd have a 50/50 shot of surviving. 2/5
Some of this was interesting enough but, as with a lot of electronica, the modulation effects caused my ears actual physical discomfort. And I still don't like glitchy, skittery edits. So have fun at the EuroKlub!
kinda wanted this one to end
First listen and it was ok. Felt like a Peleton commercial after a while, solid treadmill music. Least favorite track was DANCE, enjoyed One Minute to Midnight.
Very mid. 2 stars, some decent racks but most are annoying and even the decent ones have annoying vocals
One good track, a couple more okay tracks, the rest couldn't end fast enough
vocals knock it a star
Didn’t do much for me. Not my usual musical style.
Techno Dance.
I didn't really 'get' this one. Some of it was good, but some it seemed like random noise to me.
Why is this album on the list. Not horrible, but certainly not essential.
Not really sure how this sits in the same shelf as Etienne de Creacy, Sebastian Teller, Daft Punk, Phoenix, Cassius etc. Actually, I know. It doesn’t. This is loud and obnoxious.
I thought I would like this way more. I was expecting a super happy uplifting electro time, and to be honest I found a lot of it quite weird and discordant. It's mostly a miss for me and I won't be re-visiting it. There weren't even really any standout bangers. Really disappointing. 2.5 rounded down.
Ах как я люблю электронику, просто пиздец как обожаю. Все вот эти звуки пердëжные, ай красота
Ehhhhhh
There's nothing really bad or wrong with this album on its face, I just do not connect with this type of music even a little bit. There were a couple of cool, "Ah, it's this song" moments though.
Eh
Another album that deserves to be here and is important, but isn't totally amazing. In fact this is a classic of the incredible start, several strong tracks, then tails off, and in places descends into laughable cringe-worthy nonsense. If I never hear 'The Party' and 'D.U.N.C.E' again I will be just fine. Have to admit the first time I heard the opening track I heard it on a very large high quality hi-fi and it blew me away. It still sounds very original today. It wears thin quickly though. It sounds revolutionary at first but it seems like they kicked a new door open which absolutely no-one ran through. An interesting footnote in electronic dance music history.
I mean, it's fine. It's glitchy and quirky. I got bored pretty fast. It's well made, I just don't care about this kind of music.
This is harsh cause I know so many people love this album, but to me it's just really average Daft Punk. Like b-sides that didn't make the album.
Too repetitive and techno for my tastes. But definitely interesting.
I love D.A.N.C.E but some other songs were just noise
This album is not an interest for me. The vibe is nice, but other than that I really don’t get into it. The synths I feel for the most part blare out unncesarily, and many of the tracks sound exactly the same. All in all, Justice is a bad album. Best Song: Stress Worst Song: DVNo
That one song is good, the rest are a bit repetitive
Meh. Decent background music but not a must listen imo.
Maybe on a different day this won't feel like fingers down a blackboard
4/10 good potential on many songs but repetitive as all hell
honestly can’t believe I hadn’t heard this album before tbh… kinda mid, some of the album is perfect for indie sleaze daydreaming, otherwise maybe I just wasn’t in duh mood top 3 fo slay dreaming in no particular order: ⚠️CAUTION⚠️ prone to disagreeing with myself…listen with a light heart… Let There Be Light Phantom Pt. II Valentine
Ok so this album kind of just sounded like an off brand Daft Punk - I didn't mind it. I listened to it while grinding out Excel and it fit the vibe pretty well. Nothing spectacular. I don't really understand why it's on this list, it feels kind of insignificant. Apparently they remixed MGMT Electric Feel and it won a ton of awards. Overall, it's hard to compare garbo like this to Daft Punk. Weiners: Valentine sounded like a more pop, upbeat Mort Garson Moog synth sound. Losers: The Party.... why are they using the worst female singer of all time? Hopefully it's satire surrounding that culture and making fun of themselves but I can't tell because they're french. Awful lyricism on top of the worst accent (what is it??) and inflection I have ever heard? Literally grimacing. I like the synth.
A little too hit and miss for my taste.
I was already familiar with this album but hadn't listened to it through yet. Genesis- reminds me of a daft punk song, a nice refreshing beat Let There Be Light- not a fan, beat is repetitive and feels like it builds up to nothing new or pleasing to listen/follow along to D.A.N.C.E- Already familiar with this song, love it, love the upbeat backing track and nod to Michael Jackson Newjack- classic techno beat can zone out/do art to Phantom- banger, nice electronic sounds, easy to put on in background and vibe Phantom II- a really good listen when paired with Phantom, similar song a bit more of a build up that continues from previous song, has more different instruments/additions to this song over Phantom. Valentine- farrrr forgettable The Party-nice sample, lyrics and back track DVNO- already knew this song, I really like the bridge/chorus Stress- another hype techno instrumental Waters of Nazareth- ye is okay One Minute to Midnight- a good chill song to end on, upbeat and still fitting with the rest of the album's style Top 3: 1-D.A.N.C.E 2-The Party/DVNO 3-Phantom II/One Minute to Midnight Rating a 2 because I think there are better albums equivalent to Cross' genre. But there are some nice songs in here, especially the ones that aren't just instrumentals.
As far as electronic albums go, this was better than some of the others on the list, but still pretty repetitive and boring.
Daft Punk, dat you? Mostly forgettable except for that one song I've heard on the radio.
Seemed like just a lot of background noise. I’m sure there are those who loved the album but was not my cup of tea.
Some of the songs are ok if you need some background noise.
Sounds like jump rope songs
*listens to first song* oh cool! It's that song! Surely something else on this must be notable or even at all interesting
Simply can’t appreciate this sort of music, not my thing. Maybe one track here and there but not a full album. [0143/1001]
this is four solid tracks bookending a bunch of filler and obnoxious mid. every track runs for a minute too long, even the ones i liked. repetitive samples and irritating vocal lines abound.
Not bad.
Only trolls give this a 4 or higher.
Nervt irgendwie
More playful than most electronic dance music but still a bit of slog to get through., I hope I get some Hot Chip in this 1001 albums because the electronic music so far is pretty boring.
Meh. Not my type of music. Best songs: Phantom P1,2
It was ok.
Interesting dance music. 2
Not really into electronic dance music. But, it was okay.
I've listened to this album in the past, had a housemate in Birmingham who loved this type of music. Had his own electro emo type band too, who were awful. Lots of big hair, eyeliner and tight pants... Aside from this slight nostalgia, this really isn't for me, not a big electronic music fan. DANCE is ok and was played a lot back then. Genesis and phantom part 2 are ok too The odd song I can tolerate, a whole album is way too much. It's hard not to compare to daft punk, but I think the main difference is that daft punk is more rooted it rock where as this is more rooted in house or something. Daft punk is a different league imo The odd song yes, a whole album no 2.5
Interesting. Different. I wouldn't call it good, but not bad either
Electrónica exquisita en la linea de los grandes (chemical, daft, etc,) pero no llega. Tiene algun momento destacable, pero a cuentagotas.
Highlights: D.A.N.C.E The Party DVNO I think I'm learning that I don't really enjoy the heavy distortion sound. I find it jarring and distracting. I'm going to start by saying that this isn't music I normally listen to and I have very mixed feeling about this album. On a whole, I didn't really enjoy it, I found it to be over produced with the heavy distortion and distracting from the parts i did enjoy. With that said, I liked all the songs that featured lyrics and thought the underlying base lines to be really good throughout the album. I dont see myself coming back to this one but I probably would dance if one of these songs came on while I was out.
Somewhat accessible, but too much dance club noise
First few songs were nice background music as I cleaned up the kitchen on a Saturday morning. Halfway through the album, it was getting more annoying than entertaining. Overall, like listening to Daft Punk.
A couple good songs but it felt disjointed a lot of the time
Nothing that is earth shattering.
Okay album. The sampling here is much less impressive than something by Daft Punk or the Avalanches.
Nicht unbedingt mein Lieblingsgenre und ich bleibe definitiv bei Daft Punk.
What a shit Just noise
Not Daft Punk
1. geneziz - 1.5 2. let there be light - 1 3. dance - 2 4. neuujack - 0 5. phantom - 1 6. phantom 2 - 2 7. valentine - 0 8. the party - 0 9. dvno - 0 10. ztrezz - 2 11. uuaterz of nazareth - 1.5 12. one minute to midnight - 0
Pretty annoying overall.
- definitely heard D.A.N.C.E before - just another electronic album that’s not really for me
2007. Not the worst electronic album, there were some melodies here and there and not every moment was unbearable.
I love lots of electronic artists and genres, but I really can't get along with Justice. The sound is big, bold, clean and energetic, but ultimately feels brash and soulless to me. This style of electro-house feels like it takes influence from the 1990s "big beat" sound, but it doesn't have the same sense of humour, use of break beats, or even danceability. I do love Mr Oizo's earlier albums, which come from the same wheelhouse, but have lots more interesting going on. 2.5*, not bad but entirely disposable.
Good in places but overly repetitive.
too much disco
Meh, not my thing. Too busy and mashed up to make me want to dance and not that enjoyable as a straight listen. Although I can see why DANCE got so much attention, that's a toe tapper.
Expected to like this. Some nice grooves and interesting noises but most of the songs felt like they went on a bit too long.
Proto dubstep, nice enough but not bucket list material. Might come back to this for woodshedding at work
Some parts were somewhat enjoyable, but overall not the album for me
Well that was interesting... I can appreciate it's influence and can see how some others may like it but it's not my favorite.
As a fan of EDM, I'm surprised to say that I didn't really care for this album. It started off as a generic three, but as it moved along, track after track a growing sense of “I cannot wait for this to end” welled up inside of me. I found the vocal tracks particularly distracting because it sounded similar to Ke$ha's early vocal style, but without her energy, sarcastic delivery, and clever lyrics. Since † precludes her debut by three years, all I can assume is that perhaps Justice was a source of inspiration to her Animal/Cannibal duo. There's some decent tunes in this album, but I don't dare trudge through the full thing again to earmark them.
The was very boring and hard to get through
meh
Ok album but not for me
I will never understand how these projects, whose entire goal is to just be bombastic production from start to finish are regarded with such critical acclaim from music snobs and nerds. I’ve been doing this project for a couple weeks and I have run into at least five albums that appear broadly to be all the same. All these projects lack any form of lyric nuance, narrative story telling, emphasize on melodic or harmonic production, live instrumentation or really human personality. They are in their truest forms funky soundboards in album form. That’s fine if you like it by why is this type of music deemed so high among the musically snobbish types.
Well it's a dance album, it's like all dance albums, not made for listening to, but at least it tries a little more than a series of 4 bar repeats.
Skrillex was really overplayed when I was in high school, so I'm pretty burnt out from this heavy electronic dance music. That said, this is good. Like very good music. The ending of Let There Be Light is phenomenal. Some of the songs on the back half of the album are causing me pain. Stress and DVNO, specifically.
this is not my kind of music i was NOT in the club but i can appreciate what they were going for and if i was on m*lly i would feel differently.
Pas mon style mais bon ya 2-3 musiques ça passe
Na, this is too busy. I like some EDM, but the few tracks I listened to didn't do it for me.
2 stars. Dance felt familiar. Cool sound. Stress was too much going on
I'm almost 50 years old. I don't like to be annoyed when listening to music - I like to enjoy it. Therefore, this isn't an album for me, with all the beeps, boops, buzzing, music cutting in and out, and drilling(!?) This is music that should only be played in a TV show/movie while a group of edgy computer hackers are taking out some evil corporation. However, I did enjoy D.A.N.C.E a bit, but it was an anomaly. Also, dumb album cover and doesn't match the music contained within.
Hard to listen
eh
the ESTABLISHMENT hated JESUS for his ideas, and put him on the CROSS. the ESTABLISHMENT hated ME for thinking this album is lame, and they will put me on the CROSS. History repeats itself, and so does this album because every track feels the same.
D.A.N.C.E. is great, one minute to midnight is good, and the rest is borderline unlistenable.
Starting at \"This Party\" I listened for a minute or two and ended up skipping the rest. The first half is tolerable. But I hate electronica.
frustratingly french. D.A.N.C.E. remains a classic
Not really my thing, but produced fairly well
The party sucks. There were fun moments but then the AOL dialup sounds never made me happy
First 2 songs were good, rest of the album sounded liked Daft Punk but shitter
monotonous, nothing on it is groundbreaking or stands out enough to put it in rotation.
I'm not into electronic music so... it has some good vibes, but it's not for me.
A fine dance album. Its' place on this list is questionable though as I cant find anything particularly revelatory or big influences other than D.A.N.C.E.
there were some bright spots but they were few and far between. a lot of songs that i really had to force myself to listen through
D.A.N.C.E. Carries this album further than it should.
Not a fan, felt like it went on forever. Too much noise not enough direction. Only had a few moments that were enjoyable to me
I liked the clear production of the album but musically it was very repetitive overall. The sound of the whole album reminded me of Daft Punk here and there though in a less exciting way. It wasn't completely unlistenable, just a record that I couldn't get into it because it felt so samey.
I already knew of Genesis so it's a great start to an album. I also recognise D.A.N.C.E which was a nice surprise. The rest of the album was a bit average though. Not sure I will bother to listen to the whole album again
I'm really disappointed: I got this album and new a really good song from it (D.A.N.C.E) and thought maybe the whole album would be similar, spoiler it wasn't. I just found it so incredibly underwhelming and honestly a massive let down with most of the tracks here just seeming like mindless sounds to fill time.
No totally my jam
Maximal ecstasy in the last years und a free and prosper western world. Like the after hour of the decade. Pressing, hedonistic anything else but subtle. Aged like a Young, simple wine being drunk too late. 2.3
Electronica not my thing
This is stressing me out and I don't love that
Meh. Supposed to be disco influenced, but completely uninteresting.
about as good as house gets… so not very
Some of the tracks with vocals provided more interest, but I was less convinced by the purely instrumental tracks, on the whole.
Electronic music, not my thing
Not the biggest fan of EDM
Not for me
Why is this on this list. Did not need to hear this
To be frank this album bored me. Most of it was just fine with some being a little bit worse than others but nothing on this album was above a 6 for me. It had good ideas but it got lost in all of the synth sometimes which got repetitive after a while. The beats I can say were pretty nice for the most part but overall it was just a pretty boring experience of not so dancey dance songs.
Oh. EDM. Not my thing. They don't sing. Just go bling.
Not bad as background music, but if that's the best one can say does it really belong on this list?
I don't really like the synths on the album
It’s a dance album, keeps you moving but nothing to insane going on
Fav songs: - The Party - DVNO
I can appreciate the effort here - didn't do it for me though
Listened Before? N Meh, it was okay. Doesn't really fit my style. Not big on dance/electronic music, and I don't particularly enjoy instrumental stuff. It does have some redeeming qualities but I doubt I'd listen again. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: D.A.N.C.E.
I truly do believe there is no such thing as "not my genre", only music that isn't to the listener's taste. This is definitely a good example of that for me. I get how this album may have influenced some modern electronic music that I do like, but this.. well... Not my cup of tea.
Yeah not digging this one. The biggest hit D.A.N.C.E. sounds like the Wiggles on ecstasy or something. The rest of it sounded like 8-bit sound clips mixed on a Radio Shack Tandy 1000.
Simply not a fan of electronica
4/10 idk why this was super hard for me to get through. Rather repetitive and I didn’t like the vocals at all.
3/10. Started out okay, and then I got to a track with vocals and it got worse, and then everything just started to go on too long and feel miserable to listen to.
Ok. Not my thing.
Fine, noughties-y funky housey something or other. Think basement jazz and daft punk. People went wild for that sort of sound but it washed over me a little bit. The album art is Sarah Lucas, who is excellent, and that's the highlight. If I recall, she did tlher crosses based on the crucifixion of Sebastian Horsley who was a very interesting man. Massive fan of top hats, heroin and sex workers. Basically, this album refers to more interesting stories happening elsewhere.
Прослушано! Типичная электроньщина, не моё.
Not great, but one or two songs I didn't mind.
Hmmmm....felt contrived and lacked something important...
Very.... electronic. OK.
Works well enough in the gym and, one supposes, at the club, though you'd really have to ask the kids. Besides the pure energy aspect, this, like most dance music, gets repetitive to the point of tedium awfully quickly and, thus, falls well short of one's minimal requirements for worthwhile listening. Perhaps there's craft one might notice if one knew more about the subtleties of the genre, but any sense of artistic merit is nowhere to be found and further study seems a non-productive exercise given that one's time is finite and one is, as the book title reminds us, going to die some day, which will certainly come to pass before one hears this record again (at least intentionally).
Ok beats.
I liked some of these songs in college. But I really did not like it on repeat listen, and overall as a CD it’s not very good. They’re just way too long on truly unpleasant sounds- songs like “Let There be Light and “Party” are so tremendously unpleasant to listen to. “Dance” is still fun and catchy, but hardly anything else is. There’s two main reasons why I didn’t like it this time. One is the distortion- now I’m a fan of a little distortion. But every track has these massively over-saturated lead lines on it- it sounds like a guitar novice who doesn’t know how to use the amp, and it’s a thoroughly ugly sound. That sound pollutes the entire album- I guess they liked it, but not for me, and like I say, distorted guitar never bothered me. The other is how repetitive it is- it’s dance music, so I guess that goes with the turf, but every song is basically one idea run into the ground, and I like a little more variety.
Honestly, it was fine. Definitely buoyed by a few songs but overall pretty repetitive. If this album came out in 2022, I'd probably have hated it. Cool cover but mostly boring music. Standouts: Genesis, Stress, Waters of Nazareth, One Minute to Midnight
Another electronic album full with loops, random noise and repetitive beats
It's pretty annoying actually. If you're not dancing to this, it is a fairly obnoxious album. I don't have much to say about it. I'm open to electronic music now and then, but not the dance albums. I like some of the mixes here and there, and D.A.N.C.E was alright, but overall - I couldn't really get into it.
I really want to like Justice and should like them, as i love Daft Punk, the Prodigy and other electronic acts. However they just sound like a poor version of the above.
This tries to be Daft Punk, but, despite what the book says, fails by a long shot. I found the listen tedious. 2/5
Enjoyed D.A.N.C.E - didn't really care for the rest of the album.
Here I thought it was Daft Punk all along.
D.A.N.C.E. is een tof lied. Voor de rest is het helemaal niet mijn muziekstijl, soms had ik moeite om een lied af te luisteren.
Sounds ok but it's EDM, it gets boring.
This album was pretty cool but I'm just not that much of a fan of instrumental music/music without lyrics. That being said, my favorite songs from this album were Genesis and Stress.
Not into EDM
Not bad, but not clear what's significant enough about it to be included here?
D.A.N.C.E is quite catchy and somewhat enjoyable. I remember giving this album a go at the time. I didn't manage to get into it this time around either.
I've never liked this album even though it's a genre I generally love. it's all just a bit too harsh in sound. A very dirty Daft Punk.
I would have so been into this a decade ago when I was regularly going to Burning Man… now a bit more sober and I’m so not feeling this. A
Not bad overall - just not particularly special or interesting. Many of the songs start strongly but then peter out and end badly.
No Justice. Just us.
draft punk
pretty boring, if Daft Punk made a video game soundtrack but not in a good way
Budget Daft Punk.
Interesting, but sounded a little dated already. Lazy comparison, but I'd probably turn to Daft Punk if I was in the mood. A half decent Body Pump fitness soundtrack.
Very cool and clear production, but overall I didn't enjoy the song structures, and at times the instruments were downright grating. 'The Party' is the only sing I enjoyed all the way through.
Couldn't get into it.
Ok, a bit reliant on noisy synths. There are better albums of this style (daftpunk obviously)
I listened to this blind; I'd never heard of it and knew nothing about it. The album started interestingly and I was somewhat intrigued, but have a few tracks it was all starting to sound very similar all the way through. Possibly the result of using such small snippets of samples (yes, I went to the Wiki page) within a very limited musical palette and with only a few musical ideas. It would be fine to dance to a couple of tracks on a night out, but I'd soon want something else.
2 1/2
putas tetas porno
Música un tanto tecno y pop. Sin mucho alarde. Demasiado instrumental. Le han faltado muchas cosas. Se me hace muy plano. Desconocidos en su totalidad
There are a few great tracks on this album, these tend towards the vocal tracks and less the instrumental tracks. The album seems to have a loose running instrumental motif running throughout which ties it together, but also has the added effect of making it feel long and drawn out. With only a few stand out tracks, the album tends to feel a bit samey. Not terrible, but not great!
Indie kids in clubs. What a time it was. Thank fuck for the lack of smart phones. Other than D.A.N.C.E. this album is a bit of a mess, i shouldn't be surprised by that but i remember how fucking big they were for about a year. I don't remember the album from first time round but i definitely went to some nights where justice were on, don't really remember them either but that is clearly for other reasons.
Like shit Daft Punk
Dance music is definitely not my thing, but this wasn't terrible; it starts fun, upbeat and tuneful, sort of predicting Daft Punk. But then it begins to illustrate several of the universal laws of dance music. 1. It doesn't work outside of a club (with possible exception of gym). 2. It doesn’t sound right at any time of day other than late night. 3. Listening sober is no good. 4. It began to grate the longer it went on. 5. The more vocals the worse the track. 6. Darker tracks read as failed attempts to be taken seriously. 6. The sound ages poorly (in this case the drum machine and synths), starting almost immediately, because of the overreliance on tech. 2.2 at best, even grading on the dance music curve.
Cross by Justice (2007) Most of this album is ‘instrumental’, if the meaning of that term is stretched to include electronic/synth/mechanical beats and elaborate sampling. Very elaborate sampling. The sound is cool, despite the proliferation of ‘clipping’ of samples, resulting In very little resonance in the overall sound. Three of the twelve tracks (“D.A.N.C.E.”, “The Party”, and “DVNO”) are actually ‘songs’, meaning that they include (maudlin) melody and (limp) lyrics, although even here, melody and lyrics take a backseat to the beats and samples. The greatest weaknesses here are the unrelenting repetitions and lack of development and dynamic variation. All the dynamism is in microseconds. 2/5
Daft Punk's brattier younger brother. DANCE is great, not really a fan of the rest of the album. Step away from the compression, kids. Every beat doesn't need to hurt.
This is a very hard album to rank. As far as EDM goes, I liked this album more than others I have received so far, but there were some issues that I couldn't overlook that ended up bringing it down quite a bit for me. On the positive side of things, 'Cross' was not boring or generic in the slightest. It didn't seem to heavily rely on samples which I personally feel can be a detriment on a lot of these well-regarded electronic albums (while it takes talent to recognize/manipulate good samples, it is not as impressive in my eyes as original creations). I loved the original melodies and instrumentation present on this record. It had a great bit of variety featuring funky bass, Supertramp-like electric organ ('Valentine'), and old-timey piano ('Stress') that helped make it something unique. Most of the songs did not feature vocals at all which allowed for the music to stand on its own. With that being said, this brings me to the two major negatives I found on this album. The first (and not as big a deal) is when vocals actually show up, they are either weak ('DVNO') or downright awful ('The Party'). The latter featured a singer that I would describe as a bootleg Ke$ha which is a description I hate to give to anyone. The second issue and what mainly brought this album down for me was ironically the synths. The electronic noises on this record were terribly loud and super distorted. Maybe it was just my earbuds, but there were moments where it made some songs almost unlistenable, and even if the ones where they were a bit more subdued, it would still take me out of the experience a bit. If the synths were more clean or incorporated more into the production, this would probably be my favorite electronic music album outside of some of Daft Punk's work, but I don't think I will be coming back to this one due to how it is intended to sound. I think EDM fans should give this one a listen, but I can't give it the recommendation that I wish I could give it. 2.5/5. , but some of the synths are terribly loud and distorted that takes me out of it a bit. The Party is one exception where vocals are present (second half of the album has more vocals DVNO), and it is pretty bad. Reminds me of a bootleg Ke$ha (if that's even possible).
This isn't really my thing, but some of the songs (like D.A.N.C.E) were good. That one in particular was a dedication to MJ, which I love to see (and has references to some of his songs).
Not my thing.
I started out sort of liking this one, thinking of it as a 3.5 star album. But it got significantly worse during the second half. The Party was pretty bad and Stress was so annoying that I had to skip it to remain sane.
I was excited to listen to this album because I’ve seen it for years and how good it was. Disappointed - a few standout songs, but majority are just repeating noise.
Didn't love it. I liked D.A.N.C.E., but it got really old fast. All of it just sort of blends together.
inte alls like bra som jag kom ihåg det? allt lät samma och ja mm besviken
In the late 90’s I was into The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim quite a bit. This seems like a second tier act to them. The Party song is woeful and some of the samples actually pull you out of the song rather than add to it.
## General notes: Maybe it was ground breaking at the time, but I found it uninspired and ultimately boring. REALLY reminiscent of early Daft Punk while not bringing anything fresh or unique to the mix. Not for me. ## Song by song **Genesis:** Glitchy house, not an interesting progression, but nice sound. Some Daft Punk influences. **Let There Be Light:** Vintage drum machines, more glitchy sounds. A sense of theatrics. Really interesting distorted bassline. Nice electric piano coda. String machines and airy synths, Opens up the range a little of what was shaping as a kind of boring record so far. Ends in interesting cacophony. **D.A.N.C.E.:** Wait. What if I made the beggining of the song like I'm tunning on a radio? What? That's already been done? A thousand times? Nevermind, lets do it again! Kind of interesting house/disco sounds but also kind of boring ultimately. **Newjack**: More of the same really, this is not getting better. Dropped the album ultimately, I'll listen to something else
De singles zijn duidelijk een heel stuk toegankelijker dan de rest van het album, die duidelijk niet mijn smaak was
This comes across as a less-inspired knock-off of Daft Punk. I get it, Daft Punk doesn't own or didn't pioneer the genre but this record sounds derivative of that style and falls flat. I see this was released in 2007, so they had 10+ years of evolution in the style to add some innovation but they had nothing to offer.
It's...eh. I don't really like this kind of music. Overall, I think the album starts off okay and then kinda drags. I'd definitely say it's a little too long. Could have been worse, but I wouldn't say that I needed to hear it before I died.
hmm
October 6, 2021 Not what I was expecting. Meh.
Not keen, funny how dated it sounds
Cross may be goofy, cheesy, and often tasteless, but it isn't completely boring either. Whether it's the chopped and screwed antics borrowed from Aphex Twin for more populist purposes on Let There Be Light or the disco thump and girlish vocals of D.A.N.C.E., there's often something to surprise, amuse, or hold one's interest. One thing I should mention--with the exception of the vocals, easily 90% of the music on Cross is composed on laptops from samples. That these samples come overwhelmingly from house, 80s R&B and techno goes a long toward explaining how texturally ugly and cartoonish Cross is. This is offset by the high level of detail in the arrangements. Cross may not be IDM, but it's not blazingly obvious and stupid either, which is more than I can say for most dance music. And if you can stomach the sound world, you might even describe Cross as fun. Sure, that's a low bar, but Justice just clears it, so I'll hold my nose and give Cross 2.5/5.Okay, I wrote the previous paragraph just a few songs into the album. Unfortunately, Cross gets more conventional and less daring as it goes along.
Not my style
Eh. Like a way less compelling Deadmau5. I could live with never hearing this again.
Proto dubstep, nice enough but not bucket list material. Might come back to this for woodshedding at work
First Listen. First few times I heard this, I didn't like it at all, now it is growing on me. Enjoyable. 2/5.
Pretty musical for this type of music. Long-winded sometimes. Not really my style.
Genesis and 'let there be light' did nothing for me. D.A.N.C.E. is a bit more fun with the 'choir' thing / little girl voice thing going on. Its catchy. Newjack is just annoying. Phantom is better: at least it has a bit of tune on top of the heavy beats. Pt2 has a fairly arbitrary organ-like stuff on top, which doesn't particularly help : doesn't go as well with the beats. Valentine passed me by a bit Tthhee Parrtty has a fun cheeky voice-over thing going on - from let get this part started. Bit of bounce to it. DVNO - ok Stress- quite like the 'rough' scratchy thing Waters of Nazareth - uggh. bit too 'hard house'-y for me One minute to midnight - quite liked this - a bit more sci-fi digi-pop going on!
Album didn't do much for me. A couple times I said "yeah this is cool" but just as many times I said "pretty annoying". Don't foresee a second listen for this. 2.5 🌟
Electronic music is not my taste.
Certainly not a first thing in the morning album, but I quite enjoyed it. Perhaps more as driving music for a long journey.
Het stof ligt weer mooi herverdeeld in de woonkamer. Toch: meer 'mjah' dan 'critically acclaim'. Wel leuk om nu te weten uit welk nest D.A.N.C.E. komt.
Elektronisch. Kein Zugang. Nicht auffallend schlimm
Weird but not in a good way
not for me!
Okay to listen to if I didn't pay too much attention. Got better as it progressed.
.
Des musiques que j'aime bien mais angoissant dans l'ensemble
I bought the album at the time......didn't play it much.....my opinion hasn't changed
2/5
An unholy, noisy mess. Daft Punk did it better. I gave it 1.5 stars but rounded it up because its a nice sunny day today.
meh, just couldn't get into this. im not an electronica fan.
Bueno, electrónica...
mediocre, dated
nao gosto de eletrônica dsclp
Not entirely sure what that was, but i don't think I'm a fan!
Alright.
I respect it, but I am not a fan of EDM.
D.A.N.C.E was great , otherwise too glitchy
5/10, average. Some good tracks, but doesn't stand out from particular era of electronic music
Annoyingly tedious. Someone pressed the Demo button on a Casiotone.
2/10
Näää, damit kann ich nix anfangen
YGBFKM! Enough of the weird electronica crap. 1.
2 minutes in and this shit is going to be painful. On the second song now and it's somehow worse. This shit is absolutely terrible. It's not even interesting like Duck Stab. Honestly, this is making me want to increase Duck Stabs rating. Fuck this album. This is borderline not music.
i remember the hype when this came out, and listening and it just wasn't for me. let's see if time has done it any favors. update: nope, still not for me.
I'm not sure I would've described other albums on this list as painful, but this one is pretty close. When it calms down the melodies aren't completely awful, but that's damning with faint praise An assault on the senses with little to no redeeming qualities: not one of my favourite geometry dash levels
