Enjoyed this

An easy band to mock given their recent output but the early albums stand strong and remind what indie rock can be. Solid 4.5.

I really liked the over-the-top theatrical instrumentals on this one. Overall enjoyable album

Not as good as Funeral, but pretty damn good. Keep that car running

i feel like i never love all the songs on Arcade Fire albums but i always really like the album as a whole

Graceful, soaring, melodic noughties indie. Lyrics are thoughtful if slightly impenetrable and the music encourages you to bob your head from side to side, probably astride an enormous town bike in the Netherlands or something, basket included. One for sensitive and precocious arty kids I'd say. It won't stay with me but I enjoyed the visit

Tis a shame that Win Butler is a punchable asshole because this is a solid album. Some really good songs on here.

Solid album, it's just really pleasant to listen too. If you liked this then listen to The Suburbs

Really wanted to love this. Sounds excellent, gets very interesting on side B. Not totally my thing but being objective here

Big fan of this album. Will definitely be coming back to listen to more of this band/album. Solid 8.5/10

cant believe I never heard them before - the title track is the best one by far, followed by No Cars Go

The array of sounds that this band can bind together into a cohesive piece of music is astonishing. They are worth a deep dive for anyone who enjoys popular music that doesn't suck.

Intervention, The Well and the Lighthouse, Antichrist Television Blues, Windowsill and No Cars Go. Alfa organ playing and good voice. A few boring parts. 2nd half is better.

This is the kind of album that seems to grow on you the more you listen. Opened OK with Black Mirror, but it really caught my attention with Keep the Car Running and then kept my attention throughout the entire album. Nice range of sounds and songs. I mean, I never thought the sound of a pipe organ on any album would be something I enjoy and yet, here I am saying I enjoyed the majority of this album. I keep going back n forth from a 3.5 to a 4, but I'm going to go with the 4 because I wrote down the majority of the songs as songs I liked. This is not my typical kind of music, but somehow it worked. I can see me revisiting this album. Favorites - Keep the Car Running, Antichrist Television Blues......shoot there's not a bad song off this album. Just some were better than others. This was a pleasant surprise. Best listening experience is with the headphones! As I was preparing to type in my review, my son sent me the Foo Fighters version of Keep the Car Running. Nice! If you have the Foo Fighters a fan of your music then you must have done something right! 4

I definitely didn't like this one as much as Funeral when it came out, but I feel like it's aged really well honestly. Or maybe I'm different and can just appreciate it for what it is now. In either case, I dig it.

son sonidos nuevos la mejor es My bodi is a cage

A great album that I enjoyed although the first few songs didn't immediately hook me, it did eventually win me over

Arcade Fire machen einfach gute Musik. Punkt.

Music is great. Lead singer is a creep.

Hey these guys are pretty cool! Neon Bible has a good sound. Kinda indie rock. Ocean of Noise is pretty. I like this album so far. Creeping up into a 4 star rating. The album was actually really great!

I'm not sure where I truly sit with Arcade Fire, I like a lot of their music but find if I listen for too long I get a bit bored. This is probably my second favourite of their albums after The Suburbs. Keep the Car Running and No Cars Go are two belters

Band peaked 15 years ago (see YouTube live videos) when they released their first three albums. Previously rated Funeral as 5 star and The Suburbs as 4. Their second album is somewhere in between. Only really becomes strong with Intervention (except for a small dip in song 8, some weird kind of Bruce Springsteen copy song).

Good not unlistenable.

I question the need for this album in addition to Funeral because I don’t think there’s much of a difference in tone, but that’s a well documented comment on this list. Still, it’s a good album.

This is an attempt at a "big' album, and it largely succeeds. They clearly have a lot on their minds here and the topics are weighty without being too preachy (although occasionally clunky). The music is more mainstream than Funeral - think more Bruce than Bowie. Overall, a solid, enduring work.

Solid, not their best but still good

The love for Arcade Fire feels more well deserved now that I've heard this album. While The Suburbs felt aimless & meandering, Neon Bible is far more focused. There's this consistent, delicate sound that sounds a bit like church music (but not boring choir songs a la Fleet Foxes), but the hallmarks of classic 2000's indie rock are also present. In a way, this sounds like a blueprint of the genre. I'm not head over heels in love with the album, but I genuinely enjoyed it. Standout tracks are Black Mirror, Intervention, The Well and the Lighthouse, and (Antichrist Television Blues).

Very very good

I don’t Like this. It’s not bad and out of respect for the fact i can tell a lot of thought and care went into it I’m giving it a 4.But I just really don’t like the sound. It’s really boring for me.Its like fake energy with weird lyrics and it’s too loud and overwhelming. The only song that really stuck with me was “my body is a cage” it had Layers and a build up and a catchy line which from the Frist Time you Hear it just Hits you with such meaning.

I've listened to this one and "The Suburbs" a few times and I would say I like this one a little more. Probably my favorite track is "(Antichrist Television Blues)", I like the abrupt ending. It's very off-putting, and unexpected. I also liked "Black Wave / Bad Vibrations", that worked pretty well, too. I don't think they've got me as a fan yet, but I did enjoy this album. And the fact that I came back to give it a second listen says something, I had to hear it again to make a decision on it. A lot of music has been pretty polarizing, but this was a bit tougher. It's probably good for me to give these a deeper listen sometimes...

This is the third Arcade Fire album I've heard on this list (I knew it was coming) and it's my least favorite. Still, it's solid. It opens real well - I like Black Mirror and Keep the Car Running is very good (it feels very multi-layered in instruments and they blend well). The title track is a bit of a letdown but Intervention might be the best song on the whole album - cool organ and haunting church sound (more of that soaring, multi-layered sound but different sound than earlier). It does the haunting church sound better than My Body is a Cage (which is popular with the kids because it was used in Euphoria), though the lyrics on that closer are pretty darn good. Black Wave/Bad Vibrations is a bit up and down - start is a bit meh but it gets really good about 90s in when Butler takes over lead vocals and Chassagne takes on kickass backing & harmony. The Well and the Lighthouse is another great track in the middle of the album - love the pulsing tempo. Windowsill is another soaring track that I really enjoyed. No Cars Go is another solid, up-tempo track but maybe my least favorite of the album's singles (a little overproduced?). Again, even though it is my least favorite of their big three albums, it's still quite good.

This whole thing made me feel like if I was levitating, it starts really nice, although through the middle I felt a little less interesing, the last two songs are amazing, espeacially "No cars go", literally my favorite song on the album. Really loved the whole atmosphere that this album have, and the concept it manages, I enjoyed this, beside the few skippable songs.

ikkje da besta arcade fire albumet, men fortsatt ganske bra

8/10. A bit on the edgy side, but I quite liked this.

I will always think of Arcade Fire as critic bait but I enjoyed most of this album. 7/10

Funeral and The Suburbs are two of my favorite albums, but I’ve never given this one a go. Hopefully it’s good. Black Mirror - 5. Keep the Car Running - 4. Neon Bible - 4. Intervention - 4. Black Wave/Bad Vibrations - 4. Ocean of Noise - 4. The Well and the Lighthouse - 4. (Antichrist Television Blues) - 3. Windowsill - 3. No Cars Go - 5. My Body Is a Cage - 5. No Cars Go is on Arcade Fire EP, which I’ve listened to for years, so it was the only song I knew. Oddly enough, that EP came out in 2003 and this album came out in 2007. It’s interesting that they tossed it on this album after so many years. Black Mirror quickly became one of my favorite Arcade Fire songs. Thank you generator.

Arcade Fire is another band that I think I should know more than I do. I have heard this album before, and I listened to it again and still enjoyed it. I don't quite love it, but I like it a lot.

I’m a fan of Arcade Fire, but I had not listened to the album straight through. I heard a few familiar songs and really liked it as a whole.

Interesting coincidental juxtaposition: I played this immediately after Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures' and they could be the same band 28 years later. Obviously time has moved on, so the production is different and slicker, as is the musicianship, but the themes, melodic structures and lyrics all fit. If you like one, you'll definitely like the other - and I do.

Great album.

It seems that I am in like with Arcade Fire.

Atmospheric and accessible. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Black Mirror Date listened: 29/03/23

I’ve seen these guys described as grandiose and overblown. That is obviously my vibe because I am loving this. I’d heard all the singles before and really enjoyed them. But how I really discovered them was a couple of years after this album was released, when I heard Peter Gabriel‘s cover of ‘my body is a cage’, which I thought was hauntingly beautiful. I put it on repeat for days. Then I sought out the original, finding out that it was Arcade Fire and from this album. I still think their version is fabulous, but PG takes the biscuit in grandiose. Those violins cut me to my core. And any song that can make me simultaneously sing, cry and dance at 6:30 in the morning is a masterpiece. Both versions have this ability. As for the remainder of the album, there is a dark undercurrent of literary allusion and narrative storytelling that is quite compelling. It’s complemented by the timbre of Win Butler’s voice which conveys real passion and infuses every song with the emotional quality of dystopian poetry. Coupled with those hypnotic melodies its place on this list is well-deserved. All I want now: Set my spirit free Set my body free Etc etc

I was all over the map on this one. I listened to much of this in fits and starts and was not feeling the same about the material on every listen. I still wasn't able to give the entire album one extended listen from start to finish in one sitting, but I did listen to the entire thing (more than once) and am strangely unsure what to say about it. There were moments when I was put off by the explosive emotion that seemed to engulf the band and singer, but then I'd be equally impressed and moved by many passages, and really appreciated the cinematic scope of the compositions and performances. I'll chalk this one up to being an excellent choice for this endeavor, because I would have likely bailed on listening to more than a song or two if I had just stumbled upon it, but as part of this project, I am compelled to listen to the entire album, and found myself liking it more and more the more I listened. A 4 may be a little bit skewed for adjusting for my prejudices, but I thought this was very expressive and massive in spots, and deserving of a score that spoke to how much I liked the parts that were awesome.

Never listened to this album in entirety before today. Will listen again.

Definitely a grower from the perspective of thinking the pattern is overstretched, too much of the same architecture, nourishing from the evermore feeling of despair and death and oh! We know this band so well. No surprises, solid songs in the beginning which may at some point transform into monsters, cathedralic ones. The consistency and fidelity these guys‘n‘girls know what they can do best finally ignited my own faith that we’re listening a great record, here. Would‘ve thought it‘ll be lower but: 3.6

Highlights: No Cars Go, My Body Is a Cage

Hihglights: "My body is a cage" & "Intervention"

This album inexplicably sounds like it was made by someone who grew up heavily listening to Springsteen AND Echo and the Bunnymen. Somehow it works and I kind of love it. Fave Songs: The Well and the Lighthouse, Windowsill, (Antichrist Television Blues), Black Mirror, Intervention, Keep the Car Running

Great album

Like the arcade fire. pretty consistent.

Far better than I thought it would be. The album needs better separation of vocals and instruments plus they could have been louder.

Love Arcade Fire. Love the use of the organ throughout this. A great listen.

Great album. Always a sucker for a concept album and this one does not disappoint. Only 4 because there are arcade fire albums I like better

Brilliant, 4.5.

Black Mirror is a great opening track and the indie punk sound reminds me of my uni years. Nice drums but the angular guitar parts get a bit repetitive halfway through the album. nice vibe to listen to while walking, or to use in a hipster indie film

Muito bom, amei as letras!!! Minhas favs: Intervention ♥ My Body Is a Cage ♥ (Antichrist Television Blues) Windowsill The Well and the Lighthouse

Great album. 4/5

Quality tunes, always takes my to a time and place

Not the best of theirs, but a million miles better than anything The 1975, 50 Cent, Cilla Black or Scott Kelly have ever done.

Used to listen to this album quite a bit, still good. Best use of gigantic organ sound? Probably.

A great album from a great band with great songs and great music and a great album cover YOU'RE WELCOME

This kind of indie can get cheesy and nauseatingly sentimental, but I did like this album a good amount. I enjoyed it on first listen better than their more popular album. I used to like this kinda stuff my freshman year of college. When it comes to indie rock my favorite is probably the Shins; their first album deserves to be on this list.

Arcade Fire is one of my favorite bands of the past 20 years. I’d rank Funeral and The Suburbs ahead of this but this is still an incredible album. Easy 9/10 for me and one I revisit plenty.

I forgot this album existed but it slaps

medium dark timbered indie pop goodness with an echo-y cathedral aesthetic

One of the better late 2000s indie rock albums I've heard. I like the use of the organ and the string instruments

Niceee indierock, indflydelsesrigt

Actually pretty good.

This album was a nice surprise - for some reason I haven't heard it before. The only reason I don't give it five start is that there often is too much sound. Reminds me a bit of Phil Spector and his wall of sound. Fire stjerner

This came out my sophmore year of college so maybe a bit blinded by that, but it's another great cinematic-indie album by Arcade Fire. You can tell they love what they are doing and I generally like the vocal stylings of the singer.

I've listened to this album a lot since first seeing it come up on here. I don't think I've ever listened before purposefully and I absolutely love it. Black Mirror what a strong start. Absolutely love that they bought a church and converted it to record in. I only regret that I haven't had time to dive into the lyrics and include that in my review but I love the sounds and I think the fact that I keep listening says it all.

Ah well Arcade Fire rarely disappoint and this was no exception. They stay pretty on brand I always think, you know what you're getting it's never left field and I do really like it. Epic instrumental grandeur

A hoot!

Great memories of fhis album. Could be 4.5.

Cool album cover... I liked this record quite a bit.

Forgot about this band- great stuff, really like the vibes

I feel like I might have heard a lot of these songs too many times and this album didn't grab me in the way The Suburbs did, but you can't deny that it's a good album.

Superb - I've loved this since it came out. It sounds like the soundtrack to a brilliant film.

Favorite song: No Cars Go

Solid indie rock album. Takes me back.

Það er svo sérstakur fílingur sem Arcade Fire bjóða upp á. Mig langar kannski helst að kalla þetta draumkennt popp. Fíla það!

Enjoyable. A couple of songs on the second half - Ocean of Noise especially - were reallyyyyy great.

Really great album. Solid tunes I could listen to on repeat. Win Butler sucks, though.

First of all, Win Butler seems to be a shitty person. Apparently that's just how it is. Probably not in my top three Arcade Fire albums, Neon Bible is still an impressive record. Desperation, catchy tunes and unorthodox instrumentations all blended together in a shaker of solid songwriting. The highlights are plenty and the focus on religion and television is interesting. And, like I know that Montreal is close to the border, but I've always wondered why Arcade Fire has so many diss tracks aimed at USA. I mean, it's pretty weird to spend that much time singing about how awful another country is. But I dig it. 'Keep The Car Running', 'Intervention', 'Ocean of Noise', 'No Cars Go' and 'My Body Is A Cage' are all impeccable. The terrifying crescendo on the latter to close out the album is stunning. But there are also more forgettable songs, and I am not quite as emotionally invested in this one as in some of their other work. I will save my 5/5 for later.

Apparently, Win Butler shares the same feelings towards the USA as he does consent. That being said, Neon Bible is an incredibly strong record that showcases almost everything that makes Arcade Fire a great band. I’m not hooked on “Black Mirror” but soon after the album really takes off and with the exception of the Régine Chassagne-led part of “Black Wave/Bad Vibrations” (a part I actively dislike) the band almost hits just around the mark. Especially the grandiose “Intervention”, “Ocean of Noise”, the closing “My Body Is a Cage” and of course the song that inspired White Lies to write their entire discography, “No Cars Go”, are extremely well written and shows just why Arcade Fire receives the praise they do.

Pretty awesome indie rock.

I keep on forgetting this band is really good - songs are memorable over decades and they have this lush unique sound to them. This one is a perfectly paced and balance album

Rock indie

Springsteen and War on Drugs vibes. Thick, plush instrumentation. Catchy singable dark arena rock tunes. Will get more listens in the future. Great combo of arena rock bangers and indie sensibilities. Not as strong of an album as “The Suburbs”, which is definitely more hooky, but I will definitely give this album more spins in the future.

Heavy religious inspired album. Lots of anti-establishment sentiment as well. Fast-paced, a bit stressful to listen to, but not necessarily in a bad way. Makes you feel the frantic nature of living in modern 21st century (early 21st century release). Album closes with big cathedral organ sound, with win butler’s voice echoing over a pulsating drum/guitar thump. Really glad I saw this band live.

As an old dad in his cardigan and slippers I don't need to engage in the social tittle-tattle part of this band and purely concentrate on the music which I enjoy. Overblown and grandiose which is what I like. Inventive and immesive this is a work of art.

5th December 2022 Listened throughout the day while doing zero work. Went to Costco and watched White Lotus in the evening. I love arcade fire and it’s a shame all the stuff about Win has come out. They don’t scale the heights of suburbs here but it’s gothic and moody and still great.

nothing will ever beat their first album

I don't have much to say about this album, but it's pretty alright. I appreciate the calm and softness of the vocals, and of course I'm going to mention the strings. I love hearing strings, mainly violin on any record. Black Mirror was a great song to start the album with. Fave track(s): Intervention, The Well and the Lighthouse

Grandiose and symphonic, this album takes a maximalist approach to its production (self produced of course). The result is an exceptionally lush album replete with strings, synth, guitars, and other various instrumentation. Lyrically, this album explores the idea of America especially from the view from outside.

I'm going to go ahead and give this one a 4 but I've got to be honest... I'm not sure why. I... mostly enjoyed this? But I also found myself rolling my eyes at it on more than one occasion. It's alternately beautiful and gaudy. Grand and excessive. It's too much and just right in turns. At the end of the album, I have to say I enjoyed it. But I don't know that I loved it. I might have to give this one another go at a later date...

Was this before or after Edwin started the rape? I'm too lazy to jump in to the minutiae of the headlines. I mean, if someone yells 'rapist', then they are cancelled. Easy-peasy. I like things simple. I'm a headline guy and just can't be bothered. But, I'm also an optimist so I'm going to assume this was before the assaults, because it's the music that matters, right...?

I think we listened to "The Suburbs" a week or two before the allegations about Win Butler came out and changed people's impression of Arcade Fire forever. I gushed over "The Suburbs." Then two months later, along comes "Funeral," and I acknowledged the allegations but even with Win's s***iness souring our associations with the music, those scale-breaking albums are still 5's. "Neon Bible" came up in the generator just a month later, all three albums by Arcade Fire within a three month span, the same three month span that saw their legacy forever changed. I didn't review it at the time. But in my "Suburbs" review, I did say: Arcade Fire came close to dispelling the curse of the sophomore slump with "Neon Bible." In fact, in terms of sales and acclaim, there was no dip. But "Funeral" was almost impossible to follow. "Neon Bible" still has an amazing start with "Black Mirror" and "Keep the Car Running," and "No Cars Go" is also terrific, but nothing in between really stands out in the way that "Funeral" was consistently terrific throughout. A couple years later, no longer nearly as big of a fan of the group, I think that opinion holds. "Neon Bible" was removed from the list. Deserved. So was "Suburbs." Not deserved. Though Win does deserve to be cancelled and removed from our idolatry despite the artistry of those first three albums.

Like. Hadn't listened to Arcade Fire properly but this is good.

Dig it

Beautiful album. Where No Cars Go is a personal favourite.

started off slow but really grew on me over time not for me and i don't see myself revisiting this album other than if it comes up on a playlist. but, i see why other people like it so much!

Has that good sorta edgy punk feel that at times seems Brit punk to me.

Love this album

Great album - too bad the lead singer is a crappy person.

Some very enjoyable indie rock

I love this album.

4.5. This was really good

When I first heard this album when it was released, it was a bit of a let down from their debut, Funeral. It had a similar vibe and I to me, it felt like it could have been outtakes or extra tracks from the previous album. Putting that aside and listening again, it holds up well on it's own and live, many of these tracks are powerful and highlights. Still prefer Funeral and The Suburbs (both 5 stars), but Neon Bible is a pretty good sophomore effort and a lot better than what would come later.

Good album that hasn't aged well due to current allegations

Yeah, pretty good!

4.0 + Part of what I think makes "Funeral" successful is that Arcade Fire somehow manages to harness their emotional and sonic intensity letting it spill over only at climactic moments. I love how that album propels you on a journey, leading with urgency, punctuating the trip with colorful bursts of ecstatic emotion (e.g. "Wake Up"). With Neon Bible, AF are mostly able to dial in all that energy but there are moments where the intensity proves more than they can handle, and they end up sounding overblown. First is "Intervention" where Win Butler lets go on the vocals, belching out sincerity over a massive orchestra and it all sounds like Bruce Springsteen at his sweatiest and most insistent (see "Born to Run"). Not my favorite. Second are the screechy vocals paired with synthesized strings on "Black Wave." Finally, I've always disliked "No Cars Go" - it sounds like a parody of 2007 indie rock. As a side note: why did so many indie songs of that era feature that group-shouted "HEY!" trope? (see also "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men) With all this said, I still really like this record, notably the three song stretch of "The Well and the Lighthouse", "(Antichrist Television Blues" and "Windowsill."

Sounds like a bunch of French Canadian theater kids made a rock album. I liked it!

Arcade Fire - nog voordat ze ABBA 2.0 werden.

Had only heard the Peter Gabriel cover of My Body Is a Cage before, but this is pretty good too.

Overall ey-Ok with some notable outliers. I really liked "My Body Is a Cage" as the final song. It has some "Dark" vibes 4/5

This LP has a big sound, with the strings, backing vocals and synths providing textures different than most indie rock. The lyrics are dark and the lead singer hasn't got a lotta range so it can get tiring after a while. Between a 3 and a 4 for me but I'll round up for the final 2 tracks, especially "cage".

sick bass sound, melancholic feel

"Neon Bible" is the second studio album from the Canadian band Arcade Fire. They recorded this album at a church in Quebec and produced it themselves. The band used the song "Black Mirror" and a re-working of an earlier song "No Cars Go" as a starting point. They tried looking at America from an outsiders' view as a thematic perspective with the ocean and TV, particularly Evangelical preachers, also as themes and imagery. And, I would say they do it quite effectively. They incorporated a choir, orchestra and other less common instruments (hurdy-gurdy, mandolin, accordion and pipe organ) into the music. Some of those instruments play major parts. This album contains some of Win Butler's (lead singer) best lyrics. Arcade Fire's strengths have been they are good at building momentum within a song, ending majestically and creating almost anthems. I enjoyed this album a lot more today than when it came out. I think the music matches their theme as good as any of their albums. The album starts with oceans sounds on "Black Mirror" and builds with piano keys and the rhythm section. Kind of a haunting song about the uncensorship of TV's, phones-black mirrors. "Keep the Car Running" is another slow starter with strings and again builds into one of their more anthem-like songs. Great melody. Kind of Springsteen-like. I think he talking of paranoia and fear of pending things like death. The pipe organ plays a major role in "Intervention" giving a church-type feel. Obviously on purpose, since he's talking about political and religious hypocrisy. Again, a song great at building momentum with Win's and Regina Chassagne's vocals, strings and, heck, a xylophone. By the way, I'll always mention a xylophone if I hear it. A highlight of the album second half is "The Well and the Lighthouse" with an urgency in the music (bass, drums, guitar). A song about temptation and greed based on the Fable "The Fox, the Wolf and the Well." Regina's backing vocals are great again. One of the best Arcade Fire songs is "No Cars Go." The orginal version is very sparse. This version is their anthem. Strings, accordion, multiple singers, great lyrics. " Between the click of a light and the start of dream" --- reaching the perfect place. I gained a lot more respect for "Neon Bible." I think one of the reasons is that in their recent albums, they are almost too serious, both with their music and lyrics. They are serious in "Neon Bible" but they reach a great balance where it it isn't entirely overbearing. It's defintely up near their best with "Funeral" and "The Suburbs."

new shit

This is good. I like Arcade Fire. This album isn't as good as Funeral, but it has similar sounds, and it's still above average.

"My body is a cage" TOP. Misto tra arctic monkeys e primi Mumford and sons

Maximalist folk, great lyrics

Genre: Indie Rock, Art Rock Score: Decent 8 Favorite Songs: Black Mirror, Keep the Car Running, Intervention, Black Wave/Bad Vibrations, Ocean of Noise, The Well and the Lighthouse, (Antichrist Television Blues), Windowsill, No Cars Go, My Body is a Cage

Vivien un moment on eren imparables

What a great album! Song after song picks you up, building up from a simple cell, adding layer on layer of sound and rhythmic intensity. Adding this to my own list of favourites!

Really nice experience. Loved two songs. Keep the car running, no cars go.

Big sounds, really enjoyable, probably a lot more there with more listens. Still, just something kind of missing, but can't put my finger on it. Still, definitely will be revisiting.

Great album even 15 years on. Taking into account when it was written 2006/7 the messaging around the commercialisation and exploitation of Religion makes more sense in that context. The gloomy tone is helped by the usage of organ etc throughout the album. Intervention, no car go, my body is a cage, keep the car running some of my favourites off this album. Doesn’t get as much credit as it should, probably not helped by being the follower to one of the most acclaimed indie debuts ever.

The worst of Arcades Fire early run. No Cars Go is fantastic. The rest is quite mixed.

Good listen

Funeral was always going to be a hard album to follow and with this they do well. Its it is still anthems at times but doesn't fall into U2 type tropes. The production by the band in a church) sounds authentic ( whatever that means!) The new tunes hold their own (tbpugh one is nicked from an earlier e p.) As strong as the debut. 4.

A true spiritual successor to Funeral, just as anthemic and triumphant as ever before, while still experimenting with plenty of new ideas, some of which take some time to get used to. It doesn't have as many iconic classics as Funeral or Suburbs, but it's just as fun and vibrant. Yet it also feels pretty dark, in a gothic dance way, indicated by the opener (which sounds a lot like a track from Funeral), the album cover, and the cathedral orchestral instrumentation used throughout to amplify the dramatic effect. I was a bit disappointed with the direction of the songs, as they felt a bit too repetitive without much variation, which caused a lot of songs to merge together to me (save for the obvious differences in instruments or vocal styles). Still a fantastic album, and I'll still rotate it, but I consider it to be their weakest. Favorites: Intervention, No Cars Go, My Body is a Cage

A really pleasant album for background listening. I very much enjoyed having it on while working. What kept it from being really great though was the lack of standout tracks or moments. The track that came closest was The Well And The Lighthouse.

Good, as I remember from when I first listened to it.

Almost everything on this album is well done This album is really well orchestrated A lot of arcade fires music reminds me of a park hangout or something like that in a way, which I like I can definitely see myself revisiting some songs from this album 7/10

I like this album and I've kind of always liked Arcade Fire even though when I think of them in the abstract, they seem kind of boring. A friend of mine had free tickets to a show of theirs, a big arena show, and invited me along. I went but kind of felt like it was going to be a slow evening. It definitely wasn't. It was a helluva show and they worked their asses off. The songs are all sort of big emotion songs, though I feel like if each one was just a few degrees off from where it actually lands, I wouldn't be able to listen to any of it. But this album in particular is one of their better ones and I've listened to it plenty. And I'll listen again, so - 4 stars.

Great album, enough variation to keep it interesting. Uptempo drumbeat contrasts well with 'bleak' sounding vocals. Organs, strings, horns on various tracks to make up for repeating chorus lyrics bore. Catchy standouts: "Keep the Car Running", No Cars Go".

Yllättävästi levy parani loppua kohti! hauskaa miten selvästi kuulee että levy on 2000-luvulta eikä vanhempi. 4/5

song in euphoria

listened to again big sound that takes it's time

My favourite. Pompous but with a purpose. I think they really did it right with that one. No dead weight like on the other albums that would follow.

I'm really not a big fan of Arcade Fire's work, but I enjoyed this one. My favorite is The Suburbs and I quite dislike the others I've had the mischance to listen to. Anyway, glad I gave this one a chance.

Probably my fav AF. I used to be a huge fan, now that I discover more music, I'm less impress. But I admire the fact that they merge a lot of genre and compete with pop artist in the last 2 decades and still manage to reach the tops mainstream charts

Solid sophomore effort

Better than I remember, it's a really strong album. At the time it just felt like a step down from their perfect debut. Little did I know have far they would slide after this point

good album is good

Another album that I was hoping would be pull me into Arcade Fire, but this band just doesn't land for me. I do like the song 'Keep The Car Running', but i drifted in and out on this one too.

Oooo the most modern album so far. Exciting! Wow I’m catching up on all of this Arcade Fire drama. There’s a divorce happening. But the discourse is pointing towards nobody caring about the music because it’s boring and Win Butler’s behavior hangs a dark cloud over the discography. Anyway, Keep the Car Running is a very nostalgic song for me. I’m anticipating yet another 3 though because the rest of the album is quite middle of the road. What was with the obsession with glockenspiel in this genre and time period? Thank you!

Solid enough throughout, but I think it hasn't aged particularly well. Sounds much more generic now than it did when it came out, which I guess says something for their influence in a way.

3,5 ⭐️ if I could give it. Enjoyed it quite a lot, has a lot of interesting sounds/instrumentals. But it’s like a little bit self indulgent and the lead singer doesn’t always work for me

Millenial optimism forgot to take it's antidepressants. Endearing.

Pretty interesting darker sounding indie. Very cool guitar sound on Keep the Car Running that got me invested, but the opening Black Mirror was also a neat track to set the tone of the project. This explores themes topics that still sound fresh to this day, the aforementioned Black Mirror's take on technology especially rings true in the modern era. Did drag a it towards the end though for me.

Intervention and my body is a cage were both pretty s Good Overall: 3.5

This was okay. I think I liked it less the deeper in I got. First impression was “this is dope” — very 2000s and I’m here for it, reminds me of modest mouse. I like the mystical vibe around it. As it went on, it became very monochrome — all the songs bled together, it all felt like the same thing with different words. Definitely some good sounds though, and it seems this isn’t their best work, so I’d be interested to see a couple other albums.

has the grand, dramatic sound Arcade Fire is known for, but I can not help but agreeing with rolling stone and Uncut magazine. Somehow distant and overblown. I’m torn between 2 stars or 3. 2 feels low, with 3 normally being my benchmark for whether or not I’d buy this on vinyl; but if I dis own this I just would never elect to listen to it.

I feel like I should break out into a run during some of these songs. Solid.

Great voice but I only liked a couple of the tracks.

It's a 3.5 for me, because I know I enjoyed my time with the album, but I don't really remember any of the songs.

Doesn't elicit an emotional response in me the same way Funeral did. I think this is because Neon Bible feels less consistent in tone from song to song.

Not so bad, a bit "backgroundy" but pleasant enough

bro ts sucks 💔

redelijk

Not bad, had an interesting sound. Not like a standout to me.

Solid. You know, kind of brilliant and all that.

First when I saw it's arcade fire in the morning, immediately thought "clear 5 - liked them, been to some concerts - check". Started listening, first track starts as a reminiscence to "back from USSR" at the beginning of the white album... Double check... Then it goes on and everything sounds like the same mush, it does not hold up to the novelty of Funeral. A very good 3 star

Jedan veoma dosadan album kod kojeg ipak mogu prepoznati neke kvalitete. Oni su definitivno s vremenom postajali bolji bend.

This feller is a rapist right?

Like it 3/5

This really does sound so close to something I would like… so very close.

Pretty "eh" indie album.

I just like this as friend

THIS is the band that everyone fawned over a decade ago when they won a grammy? This band? Could not care less about anything I just listened to. It was inoffensive, so they get a 3, but it's a 2.5

Better than the last time I visited arcade fired still haven’t found a sound that makes me wanna stay for multiple play through, but we’re getting somewhere I had a good opening and a solid closing. It was just the middle that was like what are we getting to?

Gear: ZMF Auteur Classic LTD Shedua Artwork: 📖🪩🌃 Production: 🫧🤏🐜 Music: 🎩📣🫠 Rating: 🧋🧋🧋/5

Starts off really strong but falls off as it goes until it's just okay. 3/5

It’s not their greatest album, but for a wee while Arcade Fire could do no wrong, this has its really strong points like Keep The Car Running, Ocean of Noise and The Well and the Lighthouse but even the other tracks aren’t bad! It’s just behind The Suburbs and their best, Funeral.

I don’t get the hype.

It’s hard for me to understand how cold this leaves me when their debut was, and probably still is, one of my favourite albums of the period, and their gig in Glasgow (touring the debut) is one of my top five gigs. This just doesn’t do it for me. Pity. Really love Ocean of Noise though.

The most interesting thing about Neon Bible for me has always been its namesake, a novel written by a 16-year-old about a boy trying to escape the suffocating repression and hollow religiosity of his small town with only one kind person in his life as respite, a book which was rejected by publishers at the time. A similar fate befell his follow-up, A Confederacy of Dunces, as well, the frustration of which led him to end his own life. His mother pushed for it to be published after his death, and it became a cult classic, with Neon Bible seeing publication in 1989 against her wishes due to a legal dispute from their money-hungry extended family. But with this album, I’ve always felt that Arcade Fire bit off more than they could chew. The ingredients are so compelling – written and recorded in an abandoned church that the band had bought and fixed up, tackling those same themes of social alienation and fighting to escape an oppressive small town life only to find a world equally if not more disappointing, corrupt, empty, co-opted than what you had just run from – ending on a note that what you’re imprisoned in now is your own flesh. But as much as you can intellectualize it, I just don’t think it does that ambition justice. Musically, it only hits the highs it promises on a few tracks – first of which is Ocean of Noise, still gorgeous though I prefer the Calexico cover they released as a b-side, Intervention, and Windowsill. The rest, though memorable, still falls flat for me, never reaching the sublime highs they found on that first record. 2000s indie might have hit the mainstream here, but it was never going to stick around if this is the best we could do.

I used to really like this, but don't feel the same way these days. Is it missing something Funeral had? Or have I just grown apart from this band? TBC...

It was fine. Not memorable

Bitter, paranoid, cold, melodramatic, earnest. Some of the songs go big and hit: No Cars Go, Keep the Car Running, Windowsill, but mostly wild catharsis is held back and I kinda like this band mainly for the wild catharsis.

All the trademarks are here: expansive wall of sound, questioning lyrics, great hooks. No one song stood out from the pack, but I enjoyed the listen.

Not as strong as funeral but a few high points. Far less variance than other bands of their genre.

Much like the other album we’ve had, vocals and melody wise it’s hard not to like them to a point. Musically it’s all just a bit noughties meh though.

It was alright

average. not my jam

Have danced around listening to Arcade Fire for awhile for no particular reason just ships passing in the night. This album has a few songs that I enjoyed quite a bit but a lot more of the Indie Rock that didn't quite catch me. It's got a lot of slow ramping songs with well placed church organ and heavy bass lines to drive the themes home. Maybe too much was too slow and the pace clashed with the style of music but more misses than hits.

it was okay, pretty good. I don't think I will re-listen to it tho.

Some good tunes, I liked Keep the Car Running and Neon Bible. The rest kinda blended together.

One or two standout moments but honestly not enough to get me. I love music like this, but this one feels cold.

Didn't enjoy half as much as Funeral. It's alright but just less appealing.

I swear I've heard this before but I really can't tell

I don’t think it’s a hot take to see this album as being a forgotten middle child between Funeral and The Suburbs. Tbh I never hear anyone talk about it and I haven’t listened to it since high school. “My Body is a Cage” got the Degrassi episode title rub tho. Since I got the memo that I am reviewing albums and not humans, I will give it a 3 -- lower than I would give Funeral or The Suburbs

Keep The Car Running was one of the first indie rock songs that I added to my MP3 player. This listen evoked some nostalgia for the novel, exciting feelings of discovering music as it released (rather than catching up on the hits of the 70s-90s, which I’d mainly been doing) I like Arcade Fire, still like that song. But I feel like it’s the most notable track on this album. Though it sounds nice, the rest kind of runs together. And I’m annoyed that this is one of 3 Arcade Fire albums on this list.

My body is a cage really stuck out to me. But overall, just very plain.

The album was fine.

Starting to think the Suburbs is the only album I like from them. Not a strong start, but I like some of the last songs. Rating: 4.5/10 Favorite Song: Windowsill, no cars go

A few of the songs are really good, while others aren't—but I can't give it more than 3 stars. It's a pretty good indie album.

Its Arcade Fire, you know what you are getting. "Keep the Car Running" a highlight.

it was a good album but i don’t know if it’s really worth being on this list…….. 3.5

Nojoooo

It's alright.

going back and forth on whether this sounds like a small town coming-of-age indie game (good) or a small town coming-of-age indie game (bad) fave track: black wave / bad vibrations

semi exciting

Easy listen!

I like Arcade Fire. However, I always feel that just when a song is about to hit its stride is clicks autopilot and chugs along doing the same thing for several more minutes. In a roundabout way I suppose I like Arcade Fire but I quickly get bored.

Good encapsulation of mid 2000's indie rock Fave track: No Cars Go

Right in my wheelhouse, classic album from a pivotal period in my life.

Pleasant

Good! Haven’t listened to this much since it came out. I think I still prefer the first album. It was interesting reading the Wikipedia, that Rolling Stone criticized the production as distant, which, I kinda get. It helped define the indie sound, but, it is distant. Also, anecdotally I remember indie bands being kinda anti Springsteen, but this album largely sounds like a Springsteen album. I don’t know if that was the bands or just young people listening to the music, but, it’s interesting.

last song was good 3

I'd heard of Arcade Fire before, but this was the first time I'd heard any of their material. I'm sorta on the fence with this. The first listen didn't impress me, and I was ready to hand it a 1 and move on with my life. But as with all Friday albums, I had a little more time to spend with it over the weekend, and I don't think I dislike it quite as much as I thought. The lyrics mostly miss the mark, and it tends to get a little too dramatic at times, but the instrumentation is competent and a few of the melodies are actually pretty decent. I'm willing to upgrade my score to a neutral 3 and, for now, keep an open mind about their other two albums that will eventually be coming up on this list.

This didn’t grab a hold of me, but there wasn’t really anything bad either. I’m feeling this deserves a neutral score as there is so much more on this list deserving on their low scores.

ehhm.... this is the second album of this band that I encountered on this list of 1001 albums. So I am expected to listen to every Beatles album in the future? 1001 sounds like a high number, but not if you take in account the millions of albums/music produced over the last century.

I didn't have as many issues with this as some of their other albums, but I still found it a bit boring.

That was good, but not as good as the suburbs.

Pretty good i think, lil Bruce Springsteen

I wasn’t feeling the vibe on this one in the morning. I think this one, for me, requires a few listens to appreciate.

A fun prog rock inspired album.

Arcade Fire is one of those bands that I can't ever decide whether I like them or not. The lead singer seems a bit over the top, but I really appreciate the richness of the music.

Great album

It was fine. Nothing stood out as particularly great but it was all listenable

I rate it a high 3. it's almost a 4 but does not quite capture me

Not entirely unlistenable but didn’t really grab my attention

Another Arcade Fire Album??? I listened to the Suburbs only a few weeks ago. I guess someone is an Arcade Fire fan.

- I didn’t like this one as much as the suburbs - still a decent album - good background noise

I saw Arcade Fire when they were on tour promoting this album. It was Halloween and for some reason the atmosphere was incredibly tense. Some tools started throwing things on stage, and at one point the band stormed off, with Will declaring that he’d never play in this shithole again. I’ve just checked and true to their word they haven’t been back. Anyway, good songs throughout but nothing that really stands apart.

Plain ol' mac and cheese.

Important Album for the Indie genre in general but can't compete with their first album funreal.

Pretty good never heard of them before

Lost the vibe on this band/album…

I feel like 5 years ago this would have been a bigger hit with me

Great album, just that.

Indie rock, baroque pop.

Shocked I didn’t hate it, but nothing I would need to hear again. Rounding up from 2.5

I don't dislike most of the songs on this album, but I don't like the sound of the album. It sounds muddy, heavy, and plodding. There are some good melodies in there. I think i used to like Intervention, but now listening to it at least 10 years since my last listen, it isn't doing much for me.

Pretty solid album! First time listening to any of these songs. Second half of the album is the stronger than the first. First half is like 3/5, second half 4/5. All together I’ll say it’s 4/5 if that makes sense.

It's good. Far better than most albums ever made. But it's not their best or even second best. Very strong 7 out 10, but rounding down.

Was looking forward to this, I'd heard good things from people whose musical knowledge I respect. Let's just say, they were wrong. It's not a bad album, per say, or bad music; just extremely conforming to the typical noughties indie stuff that was around at the time. Not my style personally, and nothing on this album really stands out, or gives me much to write home about. Overall, inoffensive and listenable, but bland, and fairly mainstream.

#101/1001 🇨🇦 I listened to this a hell of a lot when it came out. It's darker than Funeral, which just blew my mind when it came out. Enjoyable to revisit but its not essential listening for me these days. Best tracks: No Cars Go, Keep the Car Running, Intervention.

I think I’ve realized the guys voice is just not it for me. I think the song writing was a little weak on this album compared to the Suburbs and Funeral

the french was something i wasnt expecting, was good, i didnt complete the whole album but i liked the instrumentals

*2007. 2nd album. *Some great songs: No Cars Go, Intervention, and Keep the Car Running. *Overall I don't love the album. RATING - 7/10

Solid rock.

no one ever asked what the exact midpoint between muse and coldplay would sound like but arcade fire are back to answer a second time, whether i like it or not. to be fair to the band, i found the instrumentals here a lot more interesting than on funeral. "black mirror" is a dense heap of sounds piled onto a driving rhythm that i can get into, and i enjoyed the organ sitting right up front on "intervention" and "my body is a cage". "(antichrist television blues)" and "no cars go" are both straight up great, with the latter being hands down my favourite. there are a few places where it feels like they're almost trying too hard to sound dramatic (the unearned string swell at the end of "ocean of noise" springs to mind), but overall the sound is solid. as an instrumental album this could've potentially been a 4. however, the vocals are much worse this time. régine chassagne's singing is fine on the exactly three tracks they let her sing on, but without the processing they'd used in funeral i'm realising win butler's style is entirely uninteresting to me. and the lyrics kinda suck. maybe they sucked on funeral too and he was just singing in french often enough that i couldn't tell? who can say. in any case this time it feels like he's trying a bunch of different styles but never fully committing to any of them, which at best makes him sound like a half-asleep chris martin and at worst almost sounds like he's whisper-shouting. i'm not a fan. overall i guess i'd still say this is better than funeral, arcade fire have succeeded in making music that doesn't put me to sleep this time. i still spent most of the album wishing butler would shut the fuck up though. unfortunate.

Interesting arcade fire album

I dont know much about Arcade Fire in general, but a very christian album wouldnt be the one I select at the top one of theirs.

Some goods songs in there particularly towards the end but not as good as Funeral

Never sticks with me.

Kinda boring but I did enjoy the organ music and that’s something.

This album had a few pretty good songs, but for the most part they were pretty uninteresting. A lot of them also weren't mixed very well, so it was pretty hard to hear the lyrics.

Great album

Solid album with some good hits. 6.6/10

I like the second half of this better than the first. Lot of interesting stuff that might grow on me.

I really enjoyed the first Arcade Fire album I was introduced to through this journey (2010’s The Suburbs), and was curious to see how a second exposure would play out. Inevitably during this process I compare the albums and may be less surprised/impressed the second time around and as time goes on… For Neon Bible, I still enjoy the indie rock sound and really appreciate the inclusion of French here and there (perfect from a Canadian band). But where I struggle is that the vocals are not at the forefront of the recording/clear enough to understand accurately without lyric reading (at least for me). Someone quoted in Wikipedia said it perfectly. Arcade Fire does a great job of creating albums where the “thematic threads bind the songs“, and I think this creates and experience. The organ in ‘Intervention’ and ‘My Body Is a Cage’ as well as the lyrics in ‘Intervention’ and ‘Ocean of Noise’ were the standouts for me. Arcade Fire delivered again (or previously?) on a well themed and interesting album, but I find myself wanting to revisit The Suburbs more than I’d chose to revisit Neon Bible.
