Reviews (page 4 of 13)

This is my second Dylan album in the project. I know "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Shelter From The Storm" already, and I know the reputation of this album as one of his best works. I'm looking forward to this. 5 stars for "Idiot Wind", good lord!

Ah, i love this album! Bob Dylan is a great poet and storyteller!

I like Dylan. These are songs that I like.

fave track: if you see her, say hello final thoughts: lovely, makes me feel warm and fuzzy etc

One of my favorite albums of all time.

One of Bob Dylan's finest

This has been my favorite Bob Dylan album for many years. If I remember correctly, it’s the first one that I really connected with. If it weren’t for Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, I’d call it a perfect album.

It's all about the songwriting. Bob delivers, with a little bit more as well. That voice is aquired listening. Somehow he stretches into showing signs of a soulful delivery. He changes direction completely on Idiot Wind. Bimey. Bob doesn't half belt this one out. It's like a drunken bar roomdelivery. It's a bloody great break up album.

One of my favorites

One of my favorite albums of all time.

A parte de la archifamosa "Tangled up in Blue", me gustan "Idiot Wind" y "Meet Me in the Morning", pero especialmente "Shelter from the Storm".

This is the first time I have really listened to Dylan. I get it.

Loved this in college. It feels like it is influenced by everything and that it influenced everything.

Bob Dylan is a lyrical genius. You're an eeeeeaaaaaadiot babe

Despite thinking “Tangled Up in Blue” is a brilliant song, I’ve never actually listened to the full album of Blood On The Tracks. Well that was a mistake because the album itself is brilliant too. I think my favorite song actually ended up being “Idiot Wind,” which surprised me because I didn’t think anything would top “Tangled Up in Blue.” “Simple Twist of Fate” and “If You See Her, Say Hello” are also amazing songs. The second half of the album isn’t as good, but the first half is so good that it makes up for any weaknesses of the latter half. Not that the second half is bad either, but the first half is fantastic and every song is top tier. I wish I hadn’t put off listening to this album for so long because some of these songs are life changing.

Solid folk nice change of pace from the other stuff on here. Bob Dylan writes about a lot of gritty stuff

I would (and have) put many of these songs on. My particular favourite is "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts", one of Bob's great story songs. Bob Dylan is a great songwriter but not such a good singer. However I love the style of the music and the vibe. This review is dedicated to Paddy 🤓, may he rest in peace.

Bob Dylan is one of the best, if not the best, lyricists of our time.

Still listening. Will take more than a day to digest everything in the album, but obviously a classic.

Ah, Mr. Zimmerman - I was twelve when Rainy Day Women was on the radio and my brothers were changing the channel. My entry to music has always been through lyrics, poetry, and Bob is our laureate. This is a great album, tempestuous, bitter, sweet, angry, soothing storytelling. Brilliant from start to finish. A hurricane with a tear in its eye.

So good, possibly my favorite Dylan album so it's up there at the top for best Dylan album. Start to finish it's just one great song after another and Bob's vocals are pretty good in this era along with Desire which is another favorite that I happened to listen to last week. This is a nominee for favorite album of the entire project!

Probably my favorite Dylan. Already heard.

I bought this album the day it was released. Yes, I’m one of those ‘Boomers’ who owns a record player! I really enjoyed listening to this album & am so glad it was included. After Nashville Skyline this is my second favorite Dylan.

I have never been a real big Bob Dylan fan but today started to 'move the needle' from 'okay' towards 'cool'. The rhymes, the lyrics, stories and melodies. This guy certainly packs a lot into one song. Good call 1001, please send more like this one. Thanks - Mark

Blood on the tracks is one of if not the best Dylan album. Funny, the first album that comes up is one that I have listened to one thousand times.

It's like a hug

One of my favorite albums of all time! I don't know if it's because it's the last track that I never really noticed, but this time through Buckets of Rain really caught my attention.

One of my favorite Dylan’s albums. One of my favorite albums period. Not only ain’t there a bad song on the album, there are some of Dylan’s best work. The obvious Tangled up in Blue but also Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, Idiot Wind, Simple Twist of fate….all of them. The weakest song for me is probably Meet Me in the Morning and that’s still a classic. I hadn’t listened to this album in a few years so what a great way to start the day.

Så jävla, jävla bra.

Bob Dylan is good songwriter so 5

If not the best Dylan album at least in the top 3. Easy 5 star decision despite having to suffer through 7:46 of Idiot Wind.

One of Bob’s better efforts, certainly the era where he had a better voice. Some great songs here

70s Bob is Peak Bob

My favourite and most listened to Dylan album. Some of his most heartfelt songwriting and storytelling - an achievement in the large tapestry style of narratives he adopts. Great production with soulful guitar work. Every song continues to grow on me, and for my money this is his best record. It’s a five. Fave tracks: Simple Twist of Fate and Shelter from the Storm

First Bob Dylan album. And I like it. Great lyrics. Musicality strong and not too repetitive making a full album tough.

Whether it is parents fighting or dancing under the smoke of Chekhov's gun, Blood on the Tracks became, for two decades at least, the album in which subsequent Bob Dylan album would be weighed upon. After a rocky first half of the 1970s in which he'd shed the skin that was anointed upon him and pissed off his frustrated fanbase, the best thing that could have happened to Bob was getting divorced. He had woven tales of heartache before but none quite like the collection on display. Of course, as ever, any sign of brilliance from the poet laureate of the 60s would be met with ravenous responses from his loyal and tested faithful and this album is deserving of its praise. Regardless of what one or more may think of his trajectories afterwards, it cannot be denied that, whenever the inspiration strikes, Bob Dylan is more than capable of delivering and, when putting his heart out for those to see, he is at his most captivating.

To me peak Dylan. 5/5

I didn't want to rate a 5 but I couldn't help but falling in love. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are unmatched

This album is a miserable experience. Dylan moans and drones in meandering pieces full of vitriol and bitterness. 10/10 my favourite breakup album and the only Dylan album worthy of the list.

a masterpiece

It’s just the best. I was listening to Dylan freshman and sophomore year in high school. The early stuff, first few albums, the hokey folky stuff and the kind of dizzy, silly stuff and the semi country John Wesley Harding stuff. I walked into my first day of junior year English class with Mr. Mathews, he had a masters in English literature and was the coach of the high school soccer team, and on the wall above the blackboard, he had printed in large type on a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, that printer paper from the 90s that was connected on the short edge and had the feeder ribbons along the long edge that you would tear off after it came out of the printer, except he hadn’t torn them off, so there was this piece of paper with printer ribbons it taped up well out of square and it said on it, in like 30-point courier, “to live outside the law, you must be honest.“ I told him that I knew this song and he scoffed and asked me yeah but did I know Blood On The Tracks? It wasn’t the last scoff I got that year and it wasn’t the last music recommendation but it was the best and yeah, I would’ve discovered it one or way or another soon enough anyway, but I didn’t, Mr. Mathews recommended it, and so for all his faults, I still feel in his debt because if High and Dry was a soundtrack to the first half of my 20s, Blood On The Tracks covers the whole arc so far and just like Music from Big Pink, two other of the lullabies that I sing to Margot every night come off of this album, and so I’ve got a pretty good feeling it’s gonna hold up for the last couple acts too.

I hold a number of controversial opinions and one that always gets me howled at is that I think Bob Dylan is overrated. I still do, but listening to this album helped me to understand how he got up on that pedestal in the first place.

With every listen, this is slowly overtaking Blonde on Blonde as my favourite Dylan release Favourite tracks: Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, Idiot Wind, Meet Me In the Morning, Shelter from the Storm, Buckets of Rain

Bob Dylan is a great writer and tells great stories through his songs I enjoyed this album Top songs: Tangled up in Blue, Meet Me in the Morning, Buckets of Rain

Excellent thoughtful and intelligently entertaining. One of my all time favourites. Tangled up in blue and Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts are great in every respect.

Classic for a reason

Dylan at his most love lorn. Merging the acoustic and the electric.

This is an incredible album. I'm a big Bob Dylan fan and actually came to this one a little later than a lot of his 60s records but have been enjoying it for quite a while at this point. It's got to be a 5/5 for me. Standout Tracks: Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, Idiot Wind, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Meet Me in the Morning, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, If You See Her Say Hello, Shelter from the Storm, Buckets of Rain

You got watch out for that Jack of Hearts.

Brani Preferiti: - "Tangled Up in Blue" - " Idiot Wind " - " If You See Her, Say Hello " - " Shelter from the Storm " Note: Come si fa a considerare questo album se non un capolavoro. Il punto di forza di questo album è che anche se non capisci la narrazione, le metafore o comunque il testo... la melodia che varia, la voce e la musica riescono a mantenerti coinvolto fino alla fine.

This and Blonde on Blonde are the two Dylan albums I heard first. I think they’re also his best.

Brilliant obv

Love Bob Dylan so I was excited to get this album. Really love Tangled Up in Blue. The beauty of Bob Dylan is that he isn't even a very good singer. But he is so influential and hits a lot of good stuff in his lyrics. Simple Twist of Fate is a classic demo if the blues-y folk rock sound of Bob Dylan. Great storytelling in Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts Shelter from the Storm is wonderful and classic. In conclusion, A+ album. I like Bob Dylan.

Always a good time

5/5 From a Dylan standpoint, this is it. The song craft is just perfect.

Quite lovely, really

A masterpiece.

Great album. Need much more than a day to listen. For me the tracks got better and better later in the album, with my favorite being the last track

The train derails and crashes into the wide open pussy of Charlie. She flinches a little, but carries on sucking my cock like a trooper. Bob Dylan sticks his head out the window and licks his chops. He's got a boner that won't quit and is eyeing up my tasty thighs. I can smell his fear. I withdraw my index finger from Charlie's wonderful anus and call Bob over. He wipes his curly brow and sheepishly shimmies towards me. Some debris from the train grazes his penis and he stops. I remove my throbbing dick from Charlie's jizz-filled mouth and piss all over Bob. I drench him. He's drowning and I'm bloody loving it.

Great album! Each album I dive into by the man, makes me appreciate his output more and more. It's incredible what he put out in his lifetime, and this is a high mark. Backed by an incredible band and writing poignant songs with beautiful stories! 9 out of 10

Comparado con los leñazos que suelen poner, a éste hay que darle 5 estrellas.

One of my all time favorite albums. Beautiful lyrics

I think this is Dylan's best album.

Great Album 5*

classic bob dylan. Tangled up in blue is one of my favs for a long time.

Listened to before. Classic 70's Dylan. More acoustic with some classic songs (Tangled Up in Blue, Shelter from the storm).

5-Star album with some of Dylan's best songs. All Killer / No Filler

Loved it!

Fun!!! He’s feeling it! Bob Dylan’s dance record 😂 Okay that was the opening track. Now Simple Twist of Fate. Beautiful!! I could see it as a trance disco banger. WHY AM I SAYING THAT!!!

un super classique., J'adore les mélodies et la poésie de Bob Dylan, cet album est vraiment un incontournable de sa discographie

Best break-up album of all time

The sheer number of songs he has written and the stories they tell are just mind-blowing.

I take a lot of comfort in the fact that Bob Dylan has proven decisively that one does not have to have a good voice in order to sing. I guess it helps if you just happen to be one of the most gifted songwriters to ever lift a pen.

Very strong contender for the best Bob Dylan album. More mature and cynical. Incisive lyrics, keen, mean and tight. Generally confessional, intimate, introspective swings between the stupid and the mysterious. Musically, it has good pace and a light jangle. An album I just listen to all the time and I suspect I always will.

I think this is probably as good as Dylan gets. The other Dylan album that I got earlier (Highway 61), I was probably too generous with. This album is way way better, both in terms of the songs and also the production. It was no surprise to see Phil Ramone was involved as he rarely disappoints. This was no different. I could list loads of songs, but they are all decent, although Tangled Up In Blue is one of my favourite Dylan song, and If You See Her Say Hello is utterly beautiful. I'm gonna go 5/5

My first Bob Dylan album, and another folk rock album! I’m not complaining though. Shelter From The Storm is an amazing song. Amazing album front to back! Bob writes great lyrics and his voice is soothing. Instrumentation is top notch here. This album isn’t for everybody, but if you give it a chance I’ll guarantee you’ll love it!

This one's just great. Probably my favorite Dylan album that I've listened to so far. It also features my favorite Dylan song, A Simple Twist of Fate. Easy 5 stars for me!

Another Dylan record that I've never had the chance to listen to all the way through until now. Man is so good at what he does, genius songwriting that will speak to you in such a strange and profound way.

Another classic I’ve happened to listen to ftb before. What a treat.

o maior

My second favorite Dylan album. That's enough for a 5 star rating

Amazing album. Some songs a bit repetitive but altogether extremely solid.

Probably the best break-up album ever. The lyrics are filled with such sharp witted phrases and metaphors, I’d have given him the Nobel prize based on this album alone. The lyrics are so good Hootie even bit a whole line and made it into a hit. But even lyrics aside, this is one of Dylan’s strongest and most enjoyable albums cover to cover, it’s a stone cold classic.

This is one of Dylan’s 10s, you really have to sit down and just get immersed in the poetry and songwriting, Your a big girl now and Simple twist of fate are some of the best written folk songs ever

Arguably Bobby D’s best album front to back and for good reason.

Excellent album. Toujours aussi fan de Tangled Up in Blue, Shelter from the storm, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts et Simple Twist of fate

Je suis un grothacker ! oooh moi aussi bande d'idiots

A lot of great songs on this which really grab. This feels very concise and thought out to the point where you may not realize how lengthy some of these songs become. I want to spend more time coming back to this album to look closer over the lyrics and let it saturate further.

Great work here, no weak songs and all have something to say. Favorite: Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

Best Bob Dylan album imo. It was my grandpa's favorite too, so the album is very special to me.

Might be the best Dylan album

Great Dylan album. THE great Dylan album. Tangled up in Blue sets the tone and he just keeps it there.

I'm going to do it, it's a 5. Familiarity bias. But god, this album on a Sunday morning. Don't really know why, I just like the heartbreak, the storytelling and the chance to go full Bob on the singalong. Definitely his best .

bob dylan i would drink ur bath water...#random good ol bob at his most emotionally vulnerable. love to see it. fav songs: simple twist of fate, idiot wind, you're gonna make me lonesome when you go, meet me in the morning, shelter from the storm, buckets of rain.

5/5. Arguably the best Dylan album. Every song stands on its own yet creates a full story of Dylan working through his own problems. It's a breakup album at the end of it and although not as powerful as his earlier stuff, it is a lot more personal and his voice representing the every day man, it makes it that much more relatable, especially if you've gone through a breakup. Plus Idiot Wind is hilarious and Tangled, Twist, Lonesome, Lily, and Shelter are perfect songs.

Well I guess I'm on Bob Dylan's hypetrain now. 4,5/5

His best

Greatest breakup album ever made

At first glance it seems like I love Bob Dylan since I've already given out three 5 star albums for Bob so far. With such a massive catalogue of albums he has a lot more misses than hits, so sifting through his work can either be rewarding or you could be left wondering if he's the most overrated artist of all time. Those five stars were for essential recordings from the 60's and though he released at least 10 albums in the 70's only a couple are essential Dylan. Blood On The Tracks released in 1975 might just be his last "great" record with only Desire, (released the following year) close in quality. Not only is Blood On the Tracks a beautiful, personal and well produced record, it's one of his most consistent with several memorable songs. Yup, another classic, but sadly his last.

The best album, I had this one, and I would play it over and over! Bob Dylan rocks 5 stars!

Fantastic album. A lot of vibe here, and then storytelling lyrics. Dylan when he is best.

A masterpiece. This has long been my favourite Bob Dylan album.

Has some of his best songs ever. Including my BD favorite "Simple Twist of Fate".

Classic break-up album. Dylan the poet spinning stories with ambiguous lyrics for us to interpret. Timeless stuff. And casual, laid back melodies that sound good even if you aren’t listening to the lyrics.

One of my all time favourites and one of the best albums of all time

This has always been my favourite Bob Dylan album.

Awesome. Beautiful words, beautiful melodies and the sound of a man who is an expert in his craft. Almost overwhelmingly beautiful.

Classic 70s Dylan. And probably his last 5 star album. A joyous album of tales with tunes to match.

A return to form for Bobby xxxx

Dylan certainly is not the greatest vocalist of all time but his words and songs always feel timeless and comforting.

Brilliant.

Lily Rosemary has that magic combo of being an earworm and being kinda really ass. Other than that, basically a perfect album.

Un disco impresionante de Folk, donde vemos un lado más sensible y desnudo de Bob Dylan. Retomando sus raíces más acústicas, el legendario músico realizó una colección de canciones impresionantes, con letras sacadas de libros de poesía.

The 🐐 doing 🐐 things

His finest work imo

The songwriting on this album is fantastic and I would consider this to be one of those albums where Bob Dylan is at his best. The only knock I can give it is the instrumentation is not very cohesive/polished at times, but maybe that is intentional. Favorite Song - Shelter From the Storm Least Favorite Song - Meet Me in the Morning No Skip Album? - Yes

I'm back from the dead! Apropos of nothing I just wanna say that I think Bob gets way too much hate for his singing voice. He's on pitch, say what you will about his tone. I don't go looking for flaws in masterworks.

Let's not debate whether this is Dylan's best (it may be). It is, however, a classic and highlights what an awesome music year 1975 was.

This is really an excellent album. I was initially going to give it a 4 but reconsidered as my favorite Dylan song (Tangled up in Blue) is on it. Other obvious standouts are Simple Twist of Fate, Idiot Wind and Shelter form the Storm. Actually, probably should have been a 5 all along!

One of the best albums of all time. What a great group of songs! My favorites are Simple Twist of Fate, and You’re a Big Girl Now, but really every song on here is good. What a relief after the last 2 days, though I do wish we got this on a day where I could truly soak it in.

This has been climbing the ranks towards becoming my favorite Dylan album. His songwriting is probably at its peak here, conjuring images with every story he tells. His band here are certainly no slouches either. Beautiful all around.

One of my all time favorite songs ‘Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts’ is on this. And the other songs are top notch.

Its so good.

Just one of my all time favorite albums.

"Blood on the Tracks" is the 15th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. This album was initially recorded at A&R Recording in NYC; Dylan decided to then re-record in Minnesota. Songs from each recording ended up on the album and are mostly acoustic. Many attrbute the lyrics to tensions in his personal life including estrangement from his then wife although Dylan maintains the songs to be inspired by Anton Chekhov short stories. Yes, most these songs are about relationships and appear very personal. Over time, many critics consider this best. It was also a commercial success reaching #1 in the US and #4 in the UK. The only single "Tangled Up In Blue" opens the album simply with acoustic guitar, bass and drums. It's about a relationship, maybe, his then-wife Sara. Classic Dylan. Just guitar, harmonica and bass on "Simple Twist of Fate" about a romance destined not work out. A melancholy guitar and more forward bass highlight "You're a Big Girl Now." Two lovers breaking up....a favorite of mine. "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" is the only kind of epic narrative ballad for Dylan on this album. The story involves a bank robber, a wife, a mistress ending in a of couple deaths. "Shelter from the Storm" tells the story of a guy trying to find salvation through love. Harmonica. Slow bass. Acoustic guitar. The album ends optimistically with "Buckets of Rain." Subdued. Happier. A slide guitar and a love song. This is a very focused album. Lyrically, Dylan may not have a better album as the words flow like poems. The music is simple yet to point. Not a weak track. I don't think I could pick a favorite Dylan but this is near the top.

Aghhh one of the best of all time!! Wonderful story telling, that signature gravelly voice but still with enough melody squeezed in there to show off the incredible song-writing skills and catchy tunes of his songs. An absolute highlight is If You See Her, Say Hello, I have such a major connection with this song and it makes me really emotional without me really knowing why, and that folks, is the power of the Bobbles!

well it's one of his best

Just a lovely collection of songs with a really interesting lyrical tension from song to song. It’s really a fascinating album. There are very light and beautiful melodies juxtaposed against some pretty dark and even bitter lyrics. It’s as good as Dylan gets.

Seems to be Dylan at his best. Very engaging and enjoyable.

This Bob Dylan makes some good music

One of my favorite albums of all time. The source of a few long running family remarks (SLOWLY DWADDLES) and fights (Is the Jack of Hearts alive at the end of the song???), and many fond memories of singing this in the backseat as early as I can remember. It's also one of the best examples of the Bob Dylan's deservingness of the title "Poet Laureate of a Generation." A deeply emotional and complicated album that has stood the test of time and changed with me as I've grown

Dylan’s fantastic record about the break up of his marriage. Well constructed, heartbreaking songs. Dylan’s most personal record.

Every one of them words rang true and glowed like burning coal. Pouring off of every page like it was written in my soul.

i somehow has avoided this album entirely before this, and i was a bit worried about that. i shouldn’t’ve been. it’s excellent

what is there to say? consistently unique and astonishing, a carelessly masterful poet

Great Bobby D album, got it all - folk, rock, songs about lost love, "story songs," and some good ol' eff you tongue--in-cheek diatribes.

Easy 5. I wish I had time to say more. This is one of the very best albums by anyone.

I am apprehensive to give this a 5, but I just find myself wanting to keep going back to it! The instrumentals are simple but still gorgeous and catchy, and Bob's singing has so much character. I think 'Meet Me in the Morning' was the first time I thought "Damn, Bob's got swag". The lyrics are pretty all over the place but still good storytelling, even if it doesn't make a ton of sense to me at the moment (and maybe it'll stay that way). 9/10

An elegant collection of songs that take Dylan’s early acoustic and singing style, combined with great production and deeper instrumentation. The storytelling is his classic poetry and very engaging, and his singing super underrated in delivery.

Genijalan album

So freaking good

Great album, tangled up in blue, idiot wind, meet me in the morning, are all classic tracks. Great songwriting from Dylan as usual, every song tells a story.

30th January 2023 Listened in the morning while working from home. Gym and Seb in the evening, watched 13 going on 30. One of the worlds greats at the peak of his powers.

It’s tricky doing these sorts of albums in the 1001 Albums Generator. Is 24 hours, on a Monday really enough time to properly breakdown Mr. Bob Dylan’s most complex, personal, beautiful, and literary record? Doubtful. There are likely semester-long graduate classes dedicated exclusively to this 10-song album. I’ve listened to it many times. I have a hand-me-down vinyl LP from my dad. It’s the kind of record I try not to overplay, for fear that I’ll degrade the audio fidelity. The kind of record I’ll pull out and lie on the floor reading the lyrics like poetry, with or without the music. My dad used to play “Tangled Up In Blue” on guitar when he played guitar. I can hear his voice pouring from my parent's bedroom and filling the house when I play this record. I’d rather not over analyze this one. Just enjoy it.

I must be by far the least knowledgeable of the Bob Dylan reviewers on here. I have always been a “music first, lyrics… eventually?” kind of guy. This is changing. Now I crave music with something to chew on. Meanings superimposed on meanings. Poetry, which gives every shade of grey a sense of contrast, another color. Or turns a sad story into a joke, or a twist of the knife. A sense that things can be more than what they appear to be. And I never feel more like the uncarved block than when I come to Dylan. totally uninformed, but… moldable. There’s just something mythical about his writing, and it makes his stories feel out of time. They are archetypes, but they’re very playful, referential. In a moment he’s serious, and at the next moment the collapses as a joke, or a play on words. I’m entranced. Even in his most irreverent, most referential, whatever… there’s always “something there” with Dylan. The lights are on. You get a sense that there’s another layer you need to unravel, that there’s a reason he’s pointing you to this archetype, that situation. Much to take in. 5/5

This does very little of the things I don’t like about Dylan and a lot of the things I do like.

Probably my favourite Dylan album

Bob Dylan at his peak. An amazing album.

Quality all round the Dylan in his prime.

A well deserved Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Bob Dylan is more than a singer songwriter, he is a poet laureate and the noted conscience of a generation. There are so many great songs on this album but I have always been drawn to Shelter from the Storm.

Dylan’s “breakup album”. Before Midwest emo, the sad bois cried to this.

Awesome album! One of my favorites.

Bob Dylan is unlike anything else

perfect

Top Tier Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan has a lot of great albums in his catalog but this is in the running for his best. The songs are excellent and the arrangements are impeccable. He's backed by some terrific country and blues playing but the band has just enough tasteful restraint to showcase Dylan's singing and songwriting first and foremost. The sequencing and pacing are perfect. "Tangled Up in Blue" is a phenomenal opening track. And the long songs are spread out nicely with the shorter songs. I’ve listened to this album a lot but I don't always pay close attention to the lyrics. His phrasing is always interesting and his singing style is so distinct that you can kick back and enjoy the music of his vocal performance without knowing exactly what any given song is about. But the lyrics are great! The storytelling songs are packed with memorable details. And the more direct first-person songs capture heartbreak and divorce with honesty and humility. Listening to the album is definitely a melancholy experience but I don't find it depressing or dreary. There's a catharsis in hearing him sing about his regrets and loss. And that catharsis feels good. (Of course I say this now, while I'm in a very happy place in my life. The day I'm faced with heartbreak and loss, I'm sure these songs will wreck me.) “Idiot Wind” is an incredible, epic breakup song. One of those songs you hope nobody every writes about you. This part stood out to me: "You hurt the ones that I love best And cover up the truth with lies One day you'll be in the ditch Flies buzzing around your eyes Blood on your saddle" Oof. What a way to say 'one day you'll get what's coming to you.'

The first Dylan album I bought, after hearing Lily Rosemary and the Jack Of hearts on the radio. Prior to this I knew of the singles and generally preferred covers of his songs. Listening to a complete album, this album, changed my view of him. The song that got me to buy the album is not the best one but it sits nicely in this stellar collection. It is a masterful display of storytelling through song with an elevated vocal performance reflecting the theme running through the album.

I was wondering, given that I've really enjoyed Bringing It All Back Home and Freewheelin' if this is still my favourite Bob Dylan album. Spoiler, course it is. The lyricism and music are both at their peak here, where you don't even notice all the songs are looong, because he keeps saying truisms in completely new ways that make sense of the world. It's the very best. And if there's a better eff you of a break up song than Idiot Wind (No Children by Mountain Goats and I Do This All The Time by Self Esteem come close) I want to hear it now.

One of my favorite Dylan albums. Every track is flawless.

Such a strong album. Beautifully written, beautifully performed, beautifully engineered. Even Dylan's notoriously less-than-awesome voice is maybe at its best here. The lyrics are, as always, utterly fantastic. Heart-felt and self-aware, Dylan writes stories that draw you in and tie you up with pathos. Then he wraps the whole thing up with gorgeous, entrancing music. The acoustic work here is just great and Rabinowitz & Martinson knocked it out of the park with the engineering. There's so much going on in the mix but there's room for everything to move and breathe thanks to some very smart panning and EQ choices. It's a pleasure to listen to from top to bottom. Full marks, no reservations.

Maybe the best breakup album of all time? Also one of my favorites

Gran disco del gran Bob, muy placentero de escuchar con calorcito

Not my favorite Dylan album, but absolutely a classic. Maybe his last great album?

i LOVE bob dylan

Oh wow. Now that's how you tell a story and create an atmosphere. I was transported to a time when I hadn't been born yet, sitting in a quiet cafe and sipping some coffee.

One of the best albums ever!

One of the best albums of the best songwriter ever. The lyrics provoke such intense pictures, you don’t need a movie to watch when you can just listen.

As illogical as it seems, I never really imagined Bob Dylan existing in the 70s. (This despite the fact that I realized I knew "Shelter from the Storm" from wherever in my memory.) But here he was, distinctive Dylan voice and harmonica, but also sounding quite different from the 60s and 90s albums I've listened to already in this project. I really enjoyed this the first time through, and by the third time I had really grown quite attached. Oh, this I like! Oh, this is a nine-minute song that held me captivated the whole way through! Oh, I never knew I could like Bob Dylan so much! Wonderful!

This is one of the couple of Bob Dylan albums that I have had in my library for years. I very much enjoy the album. I certainly have not listened to all of his albums...really only a few...but this had got to be one of the best.

My bestie included a couple of these songs on a mixed tape back in the day. (Thanks bestie!!!) But I'd never listened to the whole album before today. Superb story-telling and lovely tunes. It's darn good.

I wasn’t a Bob Dylan fan going into this project. But Dylan’s career has a huge range, and with every album I feel a stronger connection. This album spoke to me from the moment I put it on. I am surprised how much I instantly connected to it. I knew “Tangled Up In Blue” going into this - I love this song. But I love every song on this album. Really impressive!

Classic when Bobs voice was at its bests - tangled in blue always a jam night favourite

One of the best records, ever.

9/10 i think bob dylan might die kind of soon hes an old man

Stellar

Love it. Perfect.

tangled up in blue might be the greatest novel ever sung simple twist of fate is such a contrast between the lazy instrumentation and the punchy life-in-four-minute words very rare that dylan's voice is perfect, but it's perfect for the wounded desperation in you're a big girl now idiot wind is tangled up in blue's equal. blue's narrative propelled by the tensions of time and anticipation, wind's by vitriol for self and circumstance you're gonna make me lonesome when you go is a masterclass in brevity. could be a john cooper clarke poem meet me in the morning was a waste of a backing track lily rosemary and the jack of hearts is such a yarn if you see her say hello is youre a big girl part 2, but less refined, more wistful shelter from the storm speaks to me so much because i love the metaphor of love as tempest and calm at the same time buckets of rain is more epigram laundry list than coherent song but still nice

Not a huge Dylan fan but up can't deny his talent with this album!

masterpiece

A cut above. Dylan’s voice still is a hurdle but the storytelling and song craft just can’t be denied on this one.

Well that was a day, started awk and took some shots which isn’t great, but enjoyed dancing and a genuinely memorable bike ride, slide, talk, and walk home

This, Highway 61, and Freewheeling are my holy trinity of Dylan albums. I'm not a super fan by any means, but the stuff of his that I really like, I REALLY like. The lyrics are brilliant. The music is great (I can always understand why someone wouldn't like that aspect though) It's just a great album through and through.

Is this five or four stars? Most of the tracks are unquestionably a straight five. Is it a perfect album? No because Meet Me In the Morning is pretty throway. Is it great enough for five stars, yes.

He’s a master

All time great. Tangled up on blue might be one of the greatest songs ever from a songwriting standpoint

like it

I love Bob Dylan and I love this album. Very much.

The man - The legend.

Wow, that was a really fun listen. I should probably spend some more time with ol' Bob.

Excellent album, one of Dylan's best. A return to form after a few not-so-great albums. There are three all-time classic songs (Tangled Up in Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, and Shelter From the Storm), six very good songs, and only one dud in the bunch (Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts - shame that it's almost 9 minutes long). Idiot Wind makes me think, not for the first time, that I'm glad I've never done anything to make Bob mad at me. I read a book about the making of this album once, and a bunch of the musicians that worked on it never got credit, which is a shame. I think Dylan was a bit of a selfish asshole, but that doesn't diminish from his genius. 5 stars.

5***** One of the greatest albums of all time Certainly in the top 20 of this list

Love it

Dylan toimii kyllä aina

This album can be hard for me to listen to sometimes, and not for the usual philistine bullshit complaints about Bob Dylan. It's written in the language of an America that our country mostly forgot how to speak. And it's the only language I know, so it makes me feel somewhat lonesome because there's no one left to talk to most days. This album is so good and so close to home for me, it's painful to listen to it. Tangled up in Blue is easily a song I've listened to hundreds of times. I long for her and miss her as he tells me about this love affair that won't let him go across time and place with the coolest woman in the world. Just devastatingly unrequited love. Man, I get it. Simple Twist of Fate keeps up the melancholy reminisce for me. Just gorgeous. This is Dylan at his finest. Lush and spare at the same time. "Time is a jetplane. It moves too fast." Some of the jingly harmonica songs aren't as good. I can listen to them, but they do detract from the overall quality of the music and they seem tone deaf next to the *masterworks* that also include: Meet Me In The Morning and If You See Her Say Hello (will you please say hello from me as well?), and Shelter From The Storm AND of course, the inimitable Buckets of Rain. Buckets of Rain frequently moves me close to the point of tears. I mean, Buckets of Moonbeams in my Hands. I've seen pretty people disappear like smoke. These lyrics, as many many times as I've heard them, are always fresh and always cut right to my spirit and remind me where to place my feet in the neverending pursuit of the righteous path of love.

Classic Dylan, he is the wordsmith supreme.

Guitars are beautiful. Great sound, great album.

Solid 5 despite two songs that are twice as long as needed.

Dylan's last great masterpiece. Brilliant front to back. 9-10/10

Dylan at his best. What a discovery. Of course I knew Dylan from his hits (and the well-known Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 albums.) But I never really listened to this one and must say I personally think this might be Dylan's best! Sparkling, bitter, sneering, intimate AND intense music.

I am now - finally - seeing the Dylan-tinged light. This is an amazing album. I was always impressed with Dylan’s storytelling but I was never into his musicality until now. Interestingly enough, nothing I’ve heard before or after this from Dylan seems to scratch this itch, so perhaps this is the high-water mark. If so, then what a flood.

On repeated listens, I may give this a five. (EDIT: I put it into my rotation and gave it the well-deserved bump.) The songs I knew (only a couple) are some of the best Dylan. The songs I didn’t know were poetic, emotion-filled and lovely in many different ways.

Great album, awesome lyrics

The greatest Bob Dylan album ever.

Dylan’s comeback masterpiece, the bar that all Dylan albums following this were compared to and that other artists comeback albums are compared to.

The reason I love Dylan is the same reason I love Willie Nelson. Enchantingly simple arrangements and enthrallingly detailed narratives.

Every time I listen to this masterpiece I notice something new. This time it was that jump from the sheer fun of Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts to the wistful wonder of If You See Her, Say Hello. I've heard the latter song many times but it is so much more effective in the album. It's a phenomenal album. There is a reason why he's a Nobel laureate. This is a big part of it.

that good i even grew to love idiot wind.

While the 70s Dylan is a bit a hit or miss this one is a pure hit. Tangled up blue, Simple Twist of Fate, Shelter from the Storm all amazing. Just great stories.

At first I wasn't sure if I liked it, but by the time I reached the song Idiot Wind I decided that I did. It's sooooo good, especially the back half of the album. Lily, Rosemary and The Jack Of Hearts is my favourite song off the album, it's length wasn't a problem as I was captivated the entire time.

I LOVE folk music and folk sensibilities. This has that in spades. Dylan’s crafts catchy tunes and is unflinching in his ability to discuss his topics and message while make it enjoyable to audiences.

One of my all time favorites. I still remember the first time I heard it smoking a bowl in my cousins car.

This has most of my favorite Dylan tracks on it.

Caught me from the first track and kept me interested throughout. Music and lyrics are brilliant.

Wonderful! 🔆

One of my favorite Dylan albums! Some of his best writing

You don't often get a divorce album that leaves you 100% on the side of the artist's ex. Just picture Sara Dylan playing "Idiot Wind" at the filing. Every time Bob goes "whoooaaaaaaaaaaa" on "You're a Big Girl Now" I picture him going down a really steep roller coaster. And now you'll hear that every time too.

Шо Надо!

Blood on the Tracks genuinely moved me in a way other Dylan albums have not. Beautiful, poetic, personal and emotional, you can feel the anguish and longing through Dylan’s expressive singing and sparse arrangements. A marvellous achievement and one to surely offer greater rewards the more life you have lived.

This album is sweeping and lively. It features some of Dylan’s best and most confessional vocals (though Dylan himself would say otherwise). The music itself is textured and warm lending a nostalgic folk rock feel to the album. In the aftermath of the singer songwriter phenomenon on the late sixties early seventies, this album shows that Dylan was still very much his own force, and simply a cut above the rest

Finally! Only 138 albums in and I finally get some Bob! I’ve waded through so much shit to get here. Anyways… This is a more seasoned Bob, a reflective Bob. We still get plenty of his folksy charm, but there’s more effortless polish on this album. It’s cohesive in tone throughout and it flows beautifully from one track to the next. It’s confessional and self-aware even if Bob insists that it’s not meant to be. He can’t help it, he writes from the very base of his soul. He doesn’t just leave blood on the tracks he leaves his whole heart. It’s at an interesting new place in his life and I dig his perspective on it at this point in his career. It’s impressive and inspiring.

One of my favourite albums

Wonderful storyteller.

Veldig bra album

Bob Dylan practically invented the narrative 'folk pop' genre, often to great heights. The principal component of 'Blood On The Tracks' is in its storytelling; the lyrics superbly painting his tragic life journey against the emotional backdrop of an acoustic guitar. A number of Bob Dylan's albums definitely need to be listened to before you depart this world - 'Blood On The Tracks' is no exception, with its vulnerable lyricism and musical intricacy epitomizing the divine spirit of music as something to be shared.

One of Dylan's best.

Sorry, Curt, I think this is a solid album.

Canciones de trovador de Dylan.

Wow. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this album. First, I've seen Dylan in concert twice, both times it was terrible and ruined my opinion of him. Second, this is an era of his I've never listened to before. This album is great. Masterpiece.

Never really listened to Dylan until this album. I spent the rest of the day listening to da bob. Quality tunes. Will definitely revisit.

I haven't listened to Dylan much, but this record is just so cool and relaxing. Every song is good and peacefull. 5/5

My favourite Dylan album

Canciones de trovador de Dylan.

Muy sonoro. 5

My favorite Dylan album by a fair margin (and I’m generally a fan). There isn’t a single unimportant song on it.

271021 12:35 4.5

Probably my favourite Dylan album (of the ones I've bothered to listen to). A high four but will even stretch it to a 5 just because I don't do that very often.

soothing

Bob's last "great" album?

Favoriete nummers: - Tangled up in Blue - Meet Me in the Morning - Shelter from the Storm

This is one of my favorite Dylan albums, and the definition of 5 stars. Masterful, poetic songwriting. The stories are riveting, with characters that feel very real, and emotions that are frequently raw and personal. Fave Songs: Tangled Up in Blue, Idiot Wind, Shelter from the Storm

Lyrically genius and musically soothing

GOAT album.

Wow. Incredible album. Never been much of a fan, though I've seen him live. Still didn't walk away a fan. But this album. Just wow. Every song, so great.

A beautiful Album - One of my faves

Another one that has gotten me one or two steps closer to understanding the enigma that is the Dyl man. I think I said this about the last one but this one is my new fav. This is where he starts making sense. Highly emotive, not too abstract and very engaging storytelling.

I absolutely love the lyricism bob dylan shows throughout each song. He deals a lot with relationship issues in such a poetic way. Pair that with folk production it's an incredible experience. This is my first project with bob dylan I am excited to dive into his discography

One of my all time favourite albums. Bought it around 1979 and still play it regularly.

9 years after Blonde on Blonde, Dylan returns to his crown as one of the greatest songwriters out there by looking back at his roots. Despite what he says, this is 100% influenced by his relationship with Sara and you can feel that in his voice and in his words in many of the tracks, especially the lengthy "Idiot Wind". "Tangled Up in Blue" is a masterpiece of a song, and it's on my playlist of what to show aliens. "Simple Twist of Fate" and "If You See Her, Say Hello" are other favorites of mine. Each song pulls the audience into the singer's introspection as he responds to life's problems with mature responses.

Uncle Robert’s most personal and powerful album. An all time classic through and through and probably my favourite album of all time.

Excellent. Big Dylan fan.

My favorite Dylan album so far.

Utterly brilliant. Probably my favourite of his albums, though it's hard to choose.

Personal feelings aside, this album is a gem. Every track is solid even if there isn’t the biggest flow between them. It also has some of the most underrated “Breakup” songs and amazing lyrics.

One of my favourite albums. Excellent from start to finish.

Just one of the most perfect albums ever made. Heartbreak and bitterness with a dash of love thrown in. BT: Tangled Up In Blue, Idiot Wind, Shelter From The Storm

Oh fuck

I think I get the boomer hype, the songwriting is so good. i wish he was a better vocalist but what can you do. 9/10

9. Could be a bit of nostalgia, but this was fantastic. Also 'if you see her, say hello' is basically the same plot as the Simon and Garfunkel 'scarborough fair' lol

Annoying I can't vote higher than 5

I really love Bob Dylan's songwriting, and particularly the more narrative songs. It does a lot to offset a very samey singing/musical style that starts to drag on for such a long album. Gets a 9/10 because it still has a good number of strong songs on it, but I probably wouldn't listen to it straight through again.

El puto Bob Dylan

I listened to this on cassette in my car when I was a teenager. I remember liking the lyrics, the funny turns of phrase, the obscure things he'd say to make something rhyme. I like them even more now, especially since they're Nobel Prize material. I find myself listening intensely to every song to find out how it’s going to end. So many songs about relationships that stopped and started again! Unlike much of the 70s folk music we’ve been sent, every song here seems to have its own personality. My co-judge says “Jack of Hearts” is her favourite, but I find the cast of characters hard to keep track of. “Idiot Wind” is mine. With Jacques Brel, I felt I was missing a lot by not speaking French. Today I’m happy to speak English.

so good

One of his strongest both in terms of songwriting and sound

Das mal han i chli meh uf passt

Lots of writing, lots of thoughts, very sad album with many emotions and thoughts. Beautiful guitar work and harmonica playing, Its felt relaxing but upsetting its difficult to understand, just lots of music that makes you think and I dont mind it at all, best Dylan album Ive listened to yet

Another Dylan record that opens with probably my favorite Dylan song, Tangled Up in the Blue. The rest of the album is not as good as the opening track, but none of it made me lose interest, plus I usually like Dylan songs the more I hear them as I can get a better grasp of the lyrics which is where Dylan really shines. Favorite Track - Tangled Up in Blue Least Favorite Track - You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

where mornings begin with a 6 AM run into an open field

A little slower than I like, but for my first Bob Dylan album, I liked!!

Great album. Definite relisten to give more of my thoughts. Actually, I listened to it 6 times over the weekend and still feel like I have not explored it enough. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing.

Epic guitars and harmonica. The stories told in the lyrics are just awesome. This album is amazing.

I think this is my favourite Bob Dylan album so far. Instrumentally I really really love this. The guitar and bass work is great, and I think I’m getting more and more used to his voice. I still have no idea what most of these songs are about to be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll ever ‘understand’ Bob Dylan. The length does bring this down a little. With 51 minutes it’s quite long.

I enjoyed it, full of feeling. 4/5.

album banger

Shelter from the storm

Great album!

I'm one of those many who prefer other musicians' covers of Dylan's songs. Dylan is an exceptional songwriter, but his own voice is an acquired taste. But the songs are fantastic.

Good for Bob D

loved it

One of Dylan’s best, on repeat all day, 4.5/5

Classic album, but not my favorite Dylan.

Also great album

...Didn't totally hate this Dylan album either. I guess I just needed to be beaten across the head with all sorts of Dylan albums to really appreciate his artistry. This one is pretty personal, despite the denial from Bob himself that this album was claimed to be autobiographical. I also found the instrumentation to simply be more welcoming here, and not quite as repetitive as some of his older works. That's the seventh and final Bob Dylan album for me on this list (finally!) No better time for me to hand out a 4 for ol' Bobby.

bobby at his most cowboy, which apparently is my favorite bobby so far. might just be in the headspace where his vibes are really hitting. favorite song is definitely Idiot Wind, but there's something very fun and cool about Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts. with a couple more hits or bangers i could see it getting a higher score, but as is it's a solid 4

Rating: 9/10 ohhHHh his voice I just hate his voice ohhhh. skill issue. Another Bobby D classic, A side is amazing and Shelter from the Storm (my favorite) and Buckets of Rain end the album beautifully. If I'm picking a least favorite, Lily Rosemary and Jack is the lengthy track with the walking line and it's cool but it does alter the length and pacing of the album a bit

My favorite song was idiot wind

This is my first Bob Dylan album on the 1001 Albums list. I was expecting that distinct Bob Dylan sound, and that's exactly what got delivered. His unique voice inspired generations of pop princesses and would become the defining vocal styling of K-pop... in an alternate reality, of course. In our reality, his so-called "beautiful and angelic" voice is actually quite contentious and grating. This album leans into the heavy narrative style of songwriting Dylan is famed for while dialing back the abstract, poetic lyricism that came before. It's mostly an acoustic record, but it mixes in a band and drums, blending folk, light rock and blues into a cohesive whole. Each song is delivered with a strained passion, which Dylan uses to prove that expression is more important than being pretty. This rawness, when it comes to relationship troubles explored in the songs, can come with a bitter edge which verges on misogynistic sometimes. I think this is a great addition to the list. It serves as an excellent introduction to the artist and his styles while remaining accessible and a generally pleasant listen. I dislike the discrete elitism in the idea that he should just be a songwriter and not a singer. You need to look past the vocal surface to hear the story underneath, and that is a story only he can deliver even if sometimes it's a bit bitter. 3.75/5

I was given this record by a stranger on a reddit gift exchange, and it was my first whole album I listened to of Bob Dylan. Great choice by them and while I do feel the album is great, it's not always for me. But the album is very well rounded and any track will do nicely. 4.
