Legendary
Loved this. Not listened in full before despite seeing her live twice and moaning about the lack of early stuff.
for some reason I was obsessed with this album when I was like 15 and forgot about it until now. really fun to listen to and honestly sounds timeless. 9
Great stuff, side 2 especially
always three steps ahead
Smart, if moderately pretentious.
Play Dead is such a powerful song. Loved every minute of this album. My first 5 star rating!
Stone cold classic. Bring on the new shit!
my mam bought me this album for my 14th birthday! it's incredible
One of the greats
debut is a great debut album
Venus as a boy is one of the best songs of all time
Her voice is really like broken glass.
No one does quirky, electronic music like Bjork. From her, it’s believable. She embodies some sort of fantasy parallel world and it comes through in her vocals.
I love her retarded little voice <3
I think this is a great album. She gets a little cookie at times and often people hold that against her but I like that it’s a little off kilter. The tracks have breadth and whilst some don’t quite land often the music and vocals are amazing and it’s always interesting. The collaboration with David Arnold Play Dead with its massive strings and soaring vocals is a fantastic song…. Regardless of the Vauxhall Vectra being a shit motor. 4.2
Completely new to this album, and Bjork (beyond knowing her name). This was pretty great! She has a beautiful voice, and the album is pretty unique (to my ear). Some decent beats, too! 8/10 Most Excellent
I didn’t realize I’d like this album so much. I’m gonna give it a few more listens.
Not as experimental as her later stuff..but still 100 per cent Bjork..bouncing from club sounds to torch songs.
A terrific solo, uh, debut from Björk. Fun, interesting, daring, engaging, art-pop that’s still danceable. She took her sound to outer space from here, but still great to be reminded of the building blocks.
While none of these will end up on my regular playlist, I do appreciate the uniqueness and was interested the whole listen.
nanan
I never gave bjork a chance back in the '90s, too interested in jam band music at the time to give much else a shot. But this stuff is lovely, engaging, unique and enjoyable.
I love Bjork. I think she's still finding her voice here - literally, I mean, in terms of how she can sing with that Mother Nature-esque volcanic quality that she develops in the middle of her career - but production-wise it's already got that unique hyperpop bombasticisty that she's known and iconic for. Fav tracks: Venus As A Boy, Big Time Sensuality, Aeroplane
I am always happy to have an excuse to listen to this. An brilliant album.
Been a long time since last listened to this but was great to revisit
This could go of two ways love or hate. Listening to the first track and its oddly hypnotic. Dont like the last song its all a bit jazzy.
yea this album is peak
A classic album that has aged much better than I expected. I was actually not a big fan when it came out, but it grew on me over the years, and I thoroughly enjoyed it this time over. For some reason, I really like the (relative) simplicity of her early works, before she went full space alien. There's at least half a dozen beautiful songs here that I could absolutely come back to. "Experimental pop" has never been my cup of tea, but Björk's charisma, enthusiasm and outlandish voice are enough for me to overlook a lot of imperfections. This album managed to capture a very specific part of the 90s zeitgeist, but also brought a ton of interesting experiments to the table. It's an amazing mix of styles and genres, from EDM to pop, jazz, early trip-hop and traditional roots, glued together by a unique personality. The production is also extremely good for a first solo album. Not my favorite Björk record, but one I definitely have a soft spot for. 7/10
I was quite skeptical going into this, but I've got to say I enjoyed this quite a bit, her voice is really powerful and the music is certainly unique, though having said that, this isn't something I can see myself listening to as part of my regular rotation, I'd have to be in the mood to listen to this again, I'll give it a 4/5
Excellent
I’ve heard about björk before but never listened to a full album. wow, this was amazing. such a beautiful and unique album. i’ll definitely be coming back to this one. honestly, i feel like after a few more listens it could become a 5/5 for me. Favorite track(s) Crying Come to Me The Anchor Song
After already getting her newer albums first on Herr I wasn't looking forward to this, but it was actually quite nice
Puts the art in art pop. Really enjoy the choice of 90s synths throughout. Will be giving this repeat listens soon. 8.5/10.
Weird and wonderful
I for one (and once) enjoyed a Björk album!! Huzzahh!! Really awesome debut. While the whole of American was going through musical puberty and lashing out against the world. Björk dropped a delightful little debut project ripe with pop and electronica influence. Exploring the beauty of the city, nightlife, falling in love and other areas of the human condition. Warm vocal melodies and unique icelandic dialect enhance this and make is sound oh so much more unique. I think if you wanna listen to björk more start here and work chronologically. Reverse chronological can make you despise her.
I like the way she sings
I knew a few of her songs, first time listening to a full album. I liked it, it was nice. Good that I got the first album first also!
This album is way better than expected, love so much of it.
Alternative dance, art pop, electropop, house.
Excellent
Wasn't sure what to expect out of this one as Bjork has been all over thr place. There's moments that feel like early 90s pop but overall its a dreamy adventure. Her voice really hooks you into the songs.
lowkey good
my first listen by her. i really enjoyed this album and it really reminded me of janelle monae who no doubly took inspiration from bjork
Björk such an interesting critter. One of the best voices of all time but she uses it to be a quirked up white girl. Good album, couple boring songs but most of them were bangers.
Overall: 4.09 (rounded to 4) Consistency: 4.36 Originality: 4 Enjoyment: 4 Virtuosity: 4 1. Human Behavior - 5 2. Crying - 5 3. Venus as a Boy - 5 4. There's More to Life Than This - 3 5. Kinda dancey but I'm not complaining
Pretty good but not enough for 5 stars. Knew a couple of the songs on here and those are great but I also quite liked some that I’ve never heard or even seen the titles mentioned before.
I liked this. A lot of dance music influence which I enjoyed. Experimental without being too avant garde. Björk has a good voice and a unique singing style.
A magically enchanted electronic album fuses folk and jazz.
4*
Nice Album
Made for a very enjoyable morning drive
Ok here we go, going in with an open heart and mind. Ok, super awesome, so dancy and fun. So much more approachable than I expected. Think I'm basing too much of my Bjork take on "oh so quiet". This album was not screechy and manic like I expected. 4+, 5? Such awesome and original sound even for today, loved it
Bjork must have the most unique voice, right? It’s like a child’s but is also massive! And who knows what genre she is, she’s in a league of her own. Some times can be a hard listen, you have to be in the right mood, but when you are, oh boy is she good.
Kinda think its great. Shes in a league of her own aint she. Human behaviour is otherworldy
Weird and wonderful! Cant catgorize her Very unique 👌 I liked the more tender softer songs rather then the dance songs but still a solid 4 great debut 👏
I like Bjork, Got this album. Great start to the album, first 3 songs, The remix of Bigtime Sensuality is a way better version than one on here. Play Dead at end stands out too If you dont like her voice u understand it could get grating, mind.
After listening to and liking songs here and there of Björk since the early/mid 90's, this is the first time I've ever listened to a whole album. On my review of Superunknown by Soundgarden I said something along the lines of "I've always enjoyed when one of their songs came on but never felt the need to listen to a whole album. Now having done so, I feel validated in that belief". Soundgarden are a band I like in small doses but in larger doses they aren't as engaging. I always thought Björk was the same. Ah well, I can't be right all the time and sometimes being wrong is nice. Very solid album, much enjoyed, will listen again, and looking forward to more from her.
Rating: 4.7/5 Short Review: Playful, intimate, and emotionally fearless. It moves between club music and vulnerability so naturally it barely feels constrained by genre. Feels curious about being alive. Favorite Track: “Hyperballad.” One of the greatest “functional sadness” songs ever made. Beautiful, anxious, and strangely comforting at the same time.
Perhaps not quite as fully realized as later albums, but many of the essential Bjork elements are in place here, with lots of genres represented, unexpected melodic turns and instrumentation, and of course, her unpredictable but always compelling vocals.
I'd argue that this is the most accessible Björk album, as it only gets weirder from here. This is more dance/house based at points, but also takes time and slows down with some dreamier sequences. Björk's odd voice has always been strangely enchanting, and it shines even on her debut here. Both her pleas for love and cries of pain are equally convincing. Start here if you're even slightly interested in Björk's catalogue, and stay for the inspired genre fusions that use an electronic foundation.
My mom loves Björk
I listened to this album while driving around on my lunch break, reflecting on my city council's recent vote to expel one of its members. I came into Debut expecting the grander and more organic compositions and orchestrations of Björk's later career, so I was completely caught off-guard by just how energetic this album was. Bjork's distinctive breathy and deep voice was still immediately recognizable in her gorgeous and expressive vocal deliveries, but the driving drums and electronic house beats were a welcome surprise. I was also treated to one of the most interesting and ear-catching production tricks I've ever heard on There's More to Life Than This (Live Version) when the song seemingly cuts out as our narrator moves between rooms. As the album continued, I only grew more surprised by just how much dance and house music was here, all balanced incredibly well with gentle guitar ballads. The ocean sounds which rest underneath these more natural tracks were yet another example of one of countless production flourishes which breathes life into this album. I was also impressed by the incredibly smooth song transitions, even between completely opposite sounds; some of the songs even reminded me of my melodic dubstep Monstercat days. Seeing such a wide array of sounds and instruments melding together seamlessly will always impress me, and this album has made me even more excited to hear more projects from Björk later on in this list. Highlights: Human Behaviour, Crying, There's More to Life Than This (Live Version), Like Someone in Love, Big Time Sensuality, Come to Me, The Anchor Song
I didn't really enjoy Bjork too much when this was released, but appreciate it a lot more now
I actually quite liked this. There are some catchy tunes (Human Behaviour stands out) and it is quirky.
Absolutely have never heard of Bjork before, not even a clue as to the genre this will be going in. 1 song in, and I can't explain why but its kind of a vibe, kinda fun to listen to. The vocal range is impressive that's for certain. I had a lot of fun listening to this album, which is strange becuase this is definitely not the type of genre I gravitate towards. I may honestly seek out more music by this artist.
Obviamente, sólo he escrito floro.
An enjoyable debut featuring eclectic and trippy stylings
My third solo album from Björk and by far my favourite so far. While I’ve enjoyed some of the other ones, this is the first of hers that I can see myself going back to. Top Track - Play Dead
Love this.
Right from the start, the first thing I noticed was how raw and passionate the vocals are on this album. They're really beautiful. I think that the opening track is perfect for this album, because it shows off both the vocals and the weirdness of her sound. I really, actually don't have much to say about this album other than I enjoyed it. I found some of it quite strange, but it was all really lovely at the same time. I've never listened to this artist before, so I suppose her debut was the perfect place to start, and I feel I may listen to some more stuff by this artist later on. Favourites: There's More To Life Than This One Day Human Behaviour Crying
She is such a unique performer, but some of the instrumentals feel a bit of that era, excited to get vespertine one of these days
From her rep I was expecting much weirder. Loved it!
Bjork certainly is never at a loss for creativity. I'll admit that on this particular album, I grew to find her breathy whisper-singing grating, so Debut loses some points there. But when this album shines (usually in its instrumentation), it is spectacular. The saxophones on the final track, "The Anchor Song," were inspired.
This album was a surprise with the breath of various musical sounds with jazz influence. I was aware of Bjork as a personality but never knew her music. Glad I did listen
Haven't played this in years. Adventurous but still accessible. Some really nice tunes mixed with some tracks that miss the mark.
8/10
Wow! Wonderfully innovative sounds!! Artistic!!
About 100 albums in, this is my third Bjork album. I was familiar with the hit songs that featured in MTV’s rotation back in the day. Good times. The rest of the record mostly didn’t disappoint either. I am a bit sorry I never gave Bjork a chance before
Not my most listened to Bjork album, which would be homogenic (Somehow not on this list despite their being 4 Bjork albums). But still enjoyable.
Weird pick to put this on the list and not Homogenic or Post. But still…. Even an average Bjork album is better than most music not by Bjork.
Interesting. Didn't expect this kind of music. I liked many songs. 3,75/5.
Top : Venus As a Boy Flop : The Anchor Song
I heard while walking through the Prado, great expirience :)
7 - GOOD
Incredible voice. There are 3 different genres of music here, showing her range.
Loooove. It’s fun and exciting but also pretty weird and you can see the hints at how much more experimental her work will get. I love the ending of the album honoring her heritage and leaving off on that experimental note — a cliffhanger to see what she’ll do next!!
4/5
Taking inspiration from the dance music that was coming out at the time, Bjork's debut record sounds like nothing that came out before it, even if it is reasonably accessible. Some of the more dance leaning songs such as 'Big Time Sensuality' almost feel dated due to their beat, but they are saved by Bjork 's voice keeping them interesting. Her voice is unmistakably her and she channels so much emotion when she vocalises. The blending of electronic music with Indian music is the key to how Bjork got such a unique sound on here, but I'd argue that the highlight of this entire record is Bjork's take on jazz standard 'Like Someone In Love'. Her rendition is so powerful, even if it is largely carried by her gorgeous voice and the whimsical plucking of a harp. I know Bjork wasn't a newcomer to music when she popped out her debut solo record, but this is an exceptional record to introduce the world to her solo offerings.
Ground breaking album still sounds fresh today. Varied and original
Liked it more than I thought I would. Kind of positively surprised after I didn’t like the sugarcubes much.
I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. I am pleasantly surprised and honestly this is a great album. Her voice is so weird and interesting that it actually benefits the house music in the background. Genuinely glad I got served this today, this is such a cool listen. 8/10 "Bjork" is the sound my dog makes when she sees a cat in the back yard.
Whimsical and mysterious but not sinister and originating from the shadows- more created and elongated by a wonderfully weird art student that’s about to fine tune her work.
A stunning debut by an artist who had been recording and performing for years in Iceland. Only this time, it's the adult Bjork announcing herself. And this album really made it auspicious. Such a unique voice, a unique style, a one of a kind artist. She picks up where David Bowie left off with pop experimentation, only it's simultaneously more personal and danceable. I have never heard this one before. But I do own CDs of Post and Vespertine, which I think are superior. But there's no denying that for a first album, Debut set the pace for all musicians of her stripe to come forth, from Lorde to Lady Gaga. 1993 was a good year, after all.
Favourite Songs: Human Behaviour Big Time Sensuality Come To Me Violently Happy
Best wel vibe 7.5/10
Quite imaginative while still being pretty grounded most of the time. Not a fan of the sparser tracks since Bjork's voice can't sustain a song on its own.
Ambiance agréable assez spéciale
4/5 I'm always surprised at how good the music is, not justbher fun weirdness.
Far better than I was expecting. 4.2/5.
The moment I played the first song, björk just pulled me into this new world I had never seen before. This music was very new to me and I really liked it.
Not exactly a debut, having fronted The Sugarcubes and her own Gling-Glo, but probably the first time the mass public got to hear her amazing voice. At the time it was totally unique in the pop charts and still sounds fresh today. Better came later with Post, Homogenic and Vespertine, but a great opener for a truly unique artistic talent. 4
It's really fun just not for me
Super debüüt Björki poolt. Väga palju lahedaid kõlasid ning avant-garde mõtlemist ning helidega mängimist. Tuleb välja, et mulle meeldib selline kiiksuga muusika. 4.3/5
My son's girlfriend just bought me this on vinyl
Great body of work
An acquired taste for sure, not always what I want to listen to, but a truly unique and always interesting artist.
Gostoso de ouvir
Loved it!
My wife loves Björk. I don’t, but I did very much enjoy the soundtrack to dancer in the darkness. I guess I’ve never listened to Björk, this album specifically on my own terms, but when I did, I really got into it.
Batshit but good
It’s a great Album, her sound is so unique, you can tell in the first seconds, that a Björk song is coming. Maybe her housiest Record, but that’s okay. I don’t give 5 points, cause her best albums are to come. Fav: Venus as a Boy
Bjork is such a beautiful artist. She combines jazz with a unique sound that... well, isn't jazz. And that fits over it with a soft feminine voice. What's the opposite of her voice? Maybe like deep and gravely? Anyway, stellar artist.
Björk is a vibe that you either are into or not. The record is all over the place musically and somehow it works.
Another one from my collection (so far 20/48). I have always admired Björk and I really like "Debut" but I haven't ever truly loved any of her albums. So I guess it's a strong four stars.
Abwechslungsreich mit sehr schöner Stimme
Diverse and delightful. 3.5
there is more to life than this sounds like I am in the club; I am obsessed.
I like this more than I want to.
Fraud or Fantastic? Con or cool? She does know what she’s doing so I think the latter options. The atonality and arrhythmia will jar some. But she’s not playing it for those. It’s not an easy listen and you mightnt need to hear it more than once but actually I think you do need to hear it.
Boy, my generator REALLY likes Bjork. Already on my third album of hers and I'm not even 100 albums in. So far, every album of hers I listen to I enjoy more than the last. I can't tell if that's because she's just growing on me as an artist as a whole or if certain albums are just genuinely better than others.
Some of the tracks are fantastic, others don't have enough music to distract from Bjork's "singing". Overall though the world is a much better place with this album in it.
Amazing record, lovely songs and an ethereal voice. It changed music forever with only this to start. So good.
I didn't expect to like it at all. I did. Very much.
I really like 75% of the choices she makes and then 25% I don’t like. Mostly dislike some combos of vocal and melody at random parts.
Some great songs interesting vocal arrangements and melodies really enjoyed it
3 on here I really don't like but the rest are top notch.
It’s messy and the production can sound a bit dated but bjork is creative enough that it doesn’t really matter
Kanske måste lyssna in mig mer.
Venus as a boy är verkligen en fantastisk låt.
Mega fed produktion af "There's More To Life Than This - Live At The Milk Bar Toilets" :P
Some stone cold bangers (Human Behaviour, Crying, Venus As A Boy, Big Time Sensuality, Come To Me). Starts off pretty cooky electro/dance-y and gets cookier.
Lowkey effervescent.
The tracks with weirder, quavering, arrhythmic vocals are really great. The more linear house tunes not quite as much, but mostly this is pretty weird and wonderful. This was in the category of "I never heard it all together," and I'm glad I have now. Not typically my thing, but it feels like something I should have room for. 4.5, rounding down. But definitely belongs on the list, I think.
it had some weird electronic songs and her accent was interestnig but the good songs were good like really good also first time hearing bjork
Much better than I thought. I saw Bjork in 2015 and didn't fully get it, but think I'd appreciate seeing her if it was 2026 not 2015
Lately the connections between house music and jazz have been revealing themselves to me in a way I'd never considered before. Bjork obviously has understood this much longer than I have. In response to critical praise her debut, Bjork basically said, "Yeah it's alright but I can do better," and I think she's absolutely correct. This has charm but it's definitely an experiment, stretching out and discovering space that she'd more successfully explore in the next few years.
Interesting alternative music that is always intriguing if not completely spot on. Worth a listen from time to time.
This was my first time listening to Björk (besides 'Life Is Good'), and I MOSTLY liked what I heard (side-eye at the sax). Like 'Siamese Dream' (another newly discovered 1993 album from this list), I think this would have hit a lot harder if I had first heard it upon its initial release, though. Reviewing the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles for 1993, this is FAR better than 80% of the garbage on that list. Seriously... this Billboard list is so bad... no wonder I was still hiding in the 80s... maybe this album could have helped me transition into the 90s... if only... Anyway, I regret missing the Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream', and I regret missing Björk's 'Debut'. I wouldn't say the latter is quite as good as the former, and I do prefer The Sugarcubes' formula over Björk's solo sound, but even with its few rough patches, this album is still pretty decent.
Björk's vocals are stunning. I've heard her before but hearing her talents back to back for an entire project really expresses how dynamic she can be. And this is her debut. The instrumental aspect is also well thought, innovative (still today) and refreshing. It doesn't assume its listeners are musically inexperienced, which can be a turn off for people who don't appreciate unpredictable compositions. The philosophy behind the effort makes me appreciate her more. 3.7/5
I very much enjoyed this debut album from Björk! I feel like she has such a unique and distinct sound and vocal quality that makes her music very recognizable. I just find her music to be eclectic and strange in such a cool way. Overall, this was a great alternative/trip hop album that I would listen to again in the future!
Different but real good!
Highly original, great pop music
I've haven't had experience with Bjork outside of her amazing album of Post. It seems to be eclectic-ness city, which seems to something inherent with her, which I love. Lots of the music seems to be centred around electronic music - both experimental and straight-forward stuff. That sort of music is also complimented by some pop (i.e. "Venus As A Boy") and folk (i.e. "Like Someone In Love") which have unique twists and takes. One track that just 'wows' me is "There's More to Life Than This." Its concept and idea is just wonderful; Just so immersive! I wonder how an album of like-minded tracks would've sounded; in my opinion really good if executed properly. I enjoyed this one thoroughly! Highlight Song/s: "Venus As A Boy", "There's More To Life Than This", "Big Time Sensuality" and "Come To Me"
Listened Before? Y BJORK! She'll kick your ass! But seriously - passionate, intense, awesome stuff here. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Venus as a Boy
I resented this album for a long time for not being a Sugarcubes album. My bad. A solo career with many many highlights now across three decades.
I think i like it a bit, a lot of interesting melodics and beats and also vocals. Rate 8/10
Man, this was huge back in the day. Four big singles with four fittingly idiosyncratic videos made Björk a fixture on MTV, and propelled Debut into the upper echelons of charts all around the world - selling five million records in the process. Such was the level of the album’s success; it was like the Sugarcubes had never existed and Einar Örn Benediktsson’s vocals were just a half-remembered fever dream. Returning to Debut thirty-plus years later, it sounds just as remarkable as it ever did and operates on a charm level that’s difficult to resist. If there are doubters, stick on “Venus As A Boy” or “The Anchor Song” and assume they’ll come round to your point of view. Debut rode the musical zeitgeist here in the UK, and its quirky playfulness still sounds fresh and full of joy. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed hearing it again. 9/10
classic
7/10
Loved the indian influence esp in venus as a boy - overall a good listening experience because of how unique Bjork’s sound is
This is the only Björk album where we can say she sounds like other artists of the time, but it's still distinctly her. Who else but Björk would record a song on her debut album in a public toilet? Well, Weird Al.
This album is very 90s but also very bjork. Eclectic, off kelter and compelling. Some tracks didn't capture me but I still really wanted to follow and see where it was taking me. I want her to scream in my ears.
BJORK MY GODDESS
Found this far easier to get on with Medulla. A pretty impressive opening statement for a newly solo artist
It’s weird but it’s a vibe
This was a fun album--the most I've heard of her at once. Poppy, but smart, electronic dance but with a soul. Interesting ballad accompanied only by harp. Every song was amusing and surprising in some respect. Very enjoyable.
Quirky, dancey, original stuff. I knew all the singles but not a lot of the album tracks. It’s all nicely done, and a big departure from what she had done with The Sugarcubes, and a taste of what was to come.
Excellent album
no sé que esperaba pero me encantó
I was surprised by how much I liked this. A bunch of it reminds me a lot of Celeste.
Mis favoritas Human Behaviour yir Venus As A Boy
Very satisfying listen, I would dance
fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! somehow the first time i've listened to bjork and i understand the hype. especially love anchor and all the horns <3
This is really good but gotta give it a 4 just because I know how much better it gets from here. Listened through the full discography earlier in this project when I got a different Bjork album and the clear and Linear progression/leveling up from Debut -> Post -> Homogenic -> Vespertine was so satisfying!
Not quite the complete package as far as Bjork goes, but a damn good album, and about the best you could hope for in a debut (haha get it) outing
Great! It's weird, but still accessible.
One of my favorite artists growing up. This album and Disco Volante by Mr Bungle introduced me to jazz. Maybe not her best, but an amazing debut building a solid foundation on what was to come.
More house than I remembered. Human Behaviour is really good
neverovatno je koliko zanrova i stilova i instrumenata bjork moze da ubaci u jedan album i da zapravo ne bude too much nista. nisam ni ironicna hahahaha, stvarno mi se dopao mnogo ovaj album, toliko, zapravo, da mi cak ni bjorkino ruzno pevanje (izvini bjork) nece smanjiti ocenu. nemam mnogo toga da kazem sem da svaka pesma drzi paznju na dobar nacin, jer, kako tece album, nikad ne znas sta ces novo da cujes sa novom pesmom and i love that. malo disko, malo dzez, malo elektropop (she was so ahead of her time, neke od ovih pesama zvuce veoma moderno), malo acapella hvala bogu; ima svega stvarno i produkcija na svakoj pesmi je neverovatna. tekst, priznajem, nisam slusala - sta god da je pevala, super! da, ruzno peva, ali ima dobre melodije? kako li je to moguce. nije ruzno kao ne zna da peva, ima impresivne vokale, to smo vec ustanovili, ali meni licno se ne svidja njen stil pevanja. ali ovaj album bih definitivno ponovo slusala!
So this one caught me by surprise. I always assumed Bjork's music was basically just Enya. It feels very 90s but even now does seem quite experimental. Didn't love every song but overall was impressed.

This hardly counts as a 1993 debut for Björk after an already illustrious career. But 'Debut' was, maybe for her own sense, revealing herself apart from another band, or project, or pedagogical commitment. I admit, me, already pretty enthused about Bjerk from The Sugarcubes, this record was hard to process. It seemed so personal, indulgent, and -not- The Sugarcubes. Like I mentioned on another Byark review, she has always been ahead of my aesthetics or maybe even maturity to comprehend and appreciate her vision. I mean, she lost me for a while at Medúlla. So listening with direct attention, after quite a few years, to Debut... Ugh. It's so beautiful, free, joyful and harpful =]. There's more to life than this!
3,5
Noice. Some Nier Automata vibes.
It's not perfect but it's still one of the most interesting, complex and challenging albums of the past few decades.
i hope bjork's first four solo albums show up here, but i doubt they will be. _debut_ is a great, great album. by _verspertine_, her fourth solo album, she had solidified herself as an avant-pop genius. the standout track for me is still "one day," a marvelous bass-heavy dance pop gem of a tune. then there's the weird, dissonant sax to open the almost equally great "areoplane," in which she performs some truly odd delivery. "the anchor song" is a lovely, lovely piece of pop jazz. just wonderful delivery and strong ending to this amazing first record
YES! been waiting for this one! Björk is one of those artists who I have always been tangentially familiar but have never dived deeply into. It is so easy to hear how she inspired many of my favorite artists now.
Kid A if Thom Yorke took his depression meds and turned into an icelandic woman Great and unique debut, with a sound brand new to the grundge landscapes of 1993, but I can't see myself returning to this project much. I can see the creativity and Bjork makes it work though
Can't listen to Björk too long before I find her voice slightly annoying. Still, she's a fantastic vocalist and the production on this is insane and very unique.
This is so out there and still sounds fresh today. An intro to Bjork, can I give it a 5? I'm not sure. It is really really cool, though.
Tøft. Legendarisk intro på første låt.
slayyyy björk is so weird and fun i loveee again i completely forgot to take more detailed notes but I was sooooo into this ‼️‼️‼️‼️
So unique and quirky! I am really glad this exists even if I don’t listen to it again
The composition of this album is incredible. She is sooo experimental and it really works for me here. Loved Violently Happy in particular as a standalone song. Incredible to listen to this album as a whole piece of art tbh, very very good
I'm not a Bjork fanatic but this record is undeniable. It's a pretty astonishing sound for 1993. It embraces new (at the time) dance music sounds and already pushes those boundaries -- if this was released 10 years later, it still would have sounded new.
No. 93 Liked it a lot more than I expected.
I think I may just be a dork for Bjork. Or I don't think Bjork is jerk. The album is way more dance oriented than the other but it's fun. I dig it. The sounds she puts around her lyrics is somewhat interesting especially on the percussion side. Has some jazz flair to it. Her voice can sound angelic but she also has that weird raspy-ness to her voice that she brings out. I love it. Kinda peters out on about Violently Happy. As I somewhat lost interest. Still giving it a 4
I thought when I’d seen the name bjork I’d know more songs then I did, turns out I’d never heard any off this album. Listening to this album you can see where inspiration for a lot of other artists have come from. Her voice is sweet, and she can give it some power at the same time. I like that the music is a bit miss match now and then which changes things up. I was really surprised by this I won’t lie. Is it up there with my favourite, probably not. But it’s not upset me.
I absolutely adore Come To Me and Play Dead. I really enjoy some of the songs on this album, but at the same time I really don't like others, so it's a bit too hard for me to rate this. It has truly strong spots, but at the same time it has some weak ones as well. I tried rating each song and that gave me around a 3.5, which doesn't help me that much honestly. Although a 3 feels like robbing this album. I just can't bring myself to do that. It was pretty enjoyable through its entirety.
I get it
Solid album. Not my favourite bjork album but even then it’s still a 4.5!
This album could come out today and be a hit. Just a great mix of vocals, writing, experimentation, rock, and synth. Such a diversion from the Sugarcubes, but still quintessential Bjork. I'll do 4+
In the 90s, I was mostly into alt rock, indie and Britpop. The majority of what I listened to was guitar-heavy. But I did like electronic music too, namely acts like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers. Björk was another artist to make it clear to a guitar head like me, that there was more legitimacy to electronic music. Her take on electronica felt artistic and intellectual. "Debut" kicks off with a pretty insane three song run: "Human Behaviour" to "Crying" to "Venus As a Boy". The opener, "Human Behaviour" is a neurodivergent anthem. Framed as a reverse nature doc, where animals try to understand the impossibly confusing behaviour of humans, Björk uses sounds that are almost tribal to immerse you in this perspective. The chorus rises up, and lets her incredible voice loose for the first time on the album. It's impossible to hear "Human Behaviour" without thinking of the brilliantly mad Michel Gondry video. We had a DVD of his work, that played on heavy rotation in our twenties, and this was the first of many collaborations that Gondry would go on to do with Björk. It's a fever dream version of Goldilocks, part live action, part animated cloth animals, and a perfect visual representation of this madcap song. "Crying" deserves more attention than it gets. Themes of alienation in an urban environment are played out with cold industrial, programmed sounds. And then there's that incredible scream of hers that breaks the song apart after every chorus. It's up there as one of my favourite Björk songs. Other standout moments are spread throughout the album. Softer sounds come from the Eastern-influenced "Venus As a Boy" and the harp-glistened, almost musical-theatre feel to "Like Someone In Love". More intense sounds come from the likes of "Big Time Sensuality", which goes full-on dance tune, while "Violently Happy" creates stutters out of samples to convey dancefloor energy. That said, the album isn't flawless. There are moments in between that are interesting, but not really on par with the rest of the album. If you took the best third of this record and paired it with the strongest two-thirds of "Post", you'd have something genuinely up there with the greatest albums of all time. The closing stretch, though, is superb. "The Anchor Song" is a starkly minimalist piece that feels more like experimental jazz than anything else. It's insanely brave for an artist to release on her debut album, and is a precursor to what we'd experience later on albums like "Vulnicura". Then there's "Play Dead". It might technically be a bonus track, not in the original release, but worth mentioning as it's an absolutely epic masterpiece. The orchestration is incredible, the bass line drives things forward, and then Björk's voice just takes off through the roof. It feels like the album was leaving the door open for what was to come next in "Post". In her first solo effort, Björk managed to bring another layer of artistic merit to electronic music for guitar nerds like me. It's not perfect, but "Debut" is one hell of a debut.
Forgot how much I liked this. Good to hear it again.
What an extraordinary album. Bizarre, experimental, generational talent all mixed into one. Singles are the standout tracks but there are some beautiful moments on Album tracks as well.
Everything is music
So good I listened to it twice today. Will come back to this album many more times. Top album for me.
This might be one of the hardest rankings I’ve had to do. This record is weird as hell. But it’s also quite beautiful in many many spots. I feel like I want to be frolicking through a meadow high on mushrooms with a cadre of elves. I didn’t love it, but also as the record went on, I started to really love it. And I’m just really confused. I think I have to rank anything that creates such vivid feelings as a 4. A weird, confusing, guilty pleasure 4. Would much rather listen to interesting music like this, than a lot of other albums on here.
My first Bjork album! Super fun, her ear for music is just crazy, she has gained a new fan.
Suitably weird, glad to listen whole way through!
A strong start for the artist and on the album, but a weaker finish.
Yes, this in unmistakably Björk. Who else puts three syllables in the word "map" and sings like a lion cub (baby meerkat?) clearing it's throat.
One of the fun things about this project is now I've discovered I like Bjork sometimes. The juxtaposition of old styles and new on some of the songs is interesting to listen to.
Venus as a Boy is fantastic and the whole album was just kind of a joy.
Very very good. Strange album but some songs just have that vibe and rhythm. Really liked violently happy Venus as a boy and of course big time sensuality. The instruments and her voice are just wow
Often when I listen to Bjork I think she’s the best to ever do it
pretty awesome album!! i need to become more of a bjork person
Way cooler than I was expecting. I would love to know more about her writing and production process. A bit 90s house heavy for me in a few places, like Depeche mode I just don't like some of the drum machine and synth sounds, but on the whole some really really cool stuff going on, interesting arrangements, pretty melodies and odd instrumentation and she has an amazing voice. I get it now
Weird interludes. Great found sounds. More 4 on the floor than I remembered. Synth sounds are still great 30+ yrs later. Super cool experimental pop
it grew on me over many years, but it is a great album.
Birth of alternative?
Very futuristic for something from the 90’s that deals heavily in electronic dance music sounds. "Crying" is an excellent song. Such a peculiar swingy little chorus paired with a rather dark pre-chorus. I immediately think of one of my favorite records of 2025, FKA Twig's Eusexua. Really, all of "Debut" is an apt comparison. "Venus As A Boy" is so wonderous with its string passages and Indian influence. Goes well with Bjork's voice. But my clear cut favorite for the record is "One Day". There's a bit of goa lounge in there, that acid synth arp floating in and out is downright beautiful. "Violently Happy" is a sleeper great song too! I hear some of the groundwork for house music trends that would come in the years after this project. Not surprised by Bjork making something forward-thinking, but I am surprised by how many dance music subgenres she covered or practically invented. 4/5 lovely listen!
Been years since I listened to this
I admit I was surprised. I started with some prejudice, but it faded after the fourth track. It’s not a 5, because I feel the album loses momentum toward the end, but I liked it quite a lot.
Good Some good tunes, some a bit strange too
Is something wrong with me? I much prefer the danceable songs (Big Time Sensuality, One Day, Violently Happy) and the (admittedly very minimal) "Like Someone In Love" to the more well -renowned songs on the album. Maybe I prefer settings where Bjork's voice pierces through the instrumentation rather than lying down on a pillowy orchestral backing. That doesn't really explain why my favorite song of hers is "It's Oh So Quiet" or my favorite album is Post, which is arguably even more lush. Maybe it's personal taste.
Love this album. I was a big fan of the Sugarcubes and Bjork in particular. This was a ground breaking album and cemented Bjork as a special talent.
If I had to name two people who are actually aliens… it would be Echart Tolle, and Bjork. I first heard her on a feature with the Dirty Projectors and it’s fucking beautiful song.. then I gave her a full weekend this summer to really learn her music. Finding other artists and being able to reference them as similar to Bjork almost feels like a flex now. Oh and Anchor song has to be one of my favourite songs because of how raw and real and simple it is. I just love her little grumbles and roars during her singing.. Bjork your the alien we humans needed 👽
perfect for weird girl winter
This album is pretty good. I don’t know why china’s music websites are not involved.
I like the disco and jazz themes throughout
I want to study _all_ the musical side of it.
Bjork is like a super horny alien and I. Am. Here. For. It.
Was different to what i usually listen to, loved a new perspective into Icelandic music
Probably the best Bjork album. She makes really unusual and interesting music but sometimes it’s hard to listen to
Just so cool and fun and weird and beautiful.
4/5 very cool mix of elements going on
Disney princess club bangers Animal sounds!
I mean, what's not to like? With her scintillating, effervescent, mischievous-elf persona, set off by an otherworldly Icelandic cuteness, Bjork was a truly exciting arrival on the world stage as she stepped forward from the Icecubes, or whatever their name was. Add spine-tinglingly emotive vocal performances, melodic hooks for days, a production style deep in the main vein of the mid-nineties Happy House explosion? Forget about it. Having said all that, this was way too confectionery for me to bear in one sitting, it's like a plate of cake frosting. Hints of the cake are there too, but it wouldn't bake fully into Serious Art for another album or two yet.
Probably my favorite jazz pianist
I've liked a few of Björk's songs in the past but never listened to a full album. This is exactly as eclectic and weird as I would expect, and I'm here for it. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Human Behaviour, There's More to Life Than This, Big Time Sensuality, Violently Happy ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved some tracks.
Bjork is just as haunting in her aptly-titled debut album as she remained later in her career (sometimes, encountering albums on this list out of chronological order can be odd. Listening to an artist's early work after being familiar with their later work can be very revealing, though). I think the album stumbles occasionally, but it's still a great experience. Favorite track: "Venus as a Boy"
It remains amazingly beautiful music.
I love Bjork!
I enjoyed this. It's not exactly my usual genre, but I found myself really intrigued by most of the songs on this album. I'll definitely be relistening to this one, and I wouldn't be surprised if it will winds up growing on me. 4/5
Doesn’t match the highs of Homogenic, but it’s a consistently good listen and demonstrates Bjork as one of the most creative musicians of her time in the genre.
i liked it i like the sounds they make me sway
So much more accessible than I was mentally prepared for. Really enjoyed it all the way through.
this album could kill a small victorian child
Brilliant
Fun, pop-y, etherial, jazzy, bouncy, haunting. Not a perfect album, but above average.
Some ear worms here and beautiful melodies. For me, in 2025, a four star album. In 93, a 5.
Not my favorite Bjork album but it's in the top 3 of her albums.
I completely forgot this was a mostly dance album. That's kinda crazy now that im thinking about it because it's such a Bjork thing to do. Anyways this album is great, filled to the brim with enjoyable moments from the live "There's More to Life Than This", to the classic "Venus As a Boy", and the somber Come to Me. I don't think anything here blows me away but its so rich and filled with ideas that were so taboo and/or influential for the time. Very enjoyable "Debut" album from a one of a kind artist.
I enjoy a decent amount of "experimental" music, and Bjork is certainly that. Her creativity is undeniable. While I find her music sometimes hits and sometimes misses, Debut may be her most resonate album for me. Always a big trip hop fan, those influences both in the instrumentals and in her vocals are personal highlights. I listened to this somewhat casually and internalized some general themes of love and passion from her lyrics. I probably owe it to her and myself to sit down with the lyrics as I listen to develop a deeper reaction.
I don't know if this album is as strong as her later albums, but it's definitely cool. Human Behavior, Big Time Sensuality, Violently Happy...there are some real hits in here, and Björk is very good at being playful with the album's production and the club-inspired sounds of the songs. I really like the production choices on songs like There Is More to Life Than This; you get the sense of Björk singing right at you, and the end feels like you're walking out of a club whose party is still raging. I think Björk, albums, generally, are just easy to listen to AS ALBUMS. You can just play them and let them wash over you.
Bold choice to get weird in the middle on your solo debut album, but I guess it's the perfect opportunity to do so? Liked what I heard, though I could've personally done with fewer road noises. Might go on to listen to other albums.
This was pretty hot. More to life than this pumps. And the vibes when it sounds like they’re in the back room of a nightclub. Just attention to detail. Big time sensuality pops.
I hadn’t checked out Björk yet, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. Very pretty instrumentation, and her style is very distinct. First and last song were both great, as well as many in between.
Why is Bjork so cool Fav Song: Come To Me, Big Time Sensuality 8.8/10 4.4/5
I'm not convinced Bjork is from Earth. Incredible debut album.
I mean it's just obviously really good isn't it. I remember when Bjork emerged from the fae realm (also known as Iceland) with this amazing debut album and thinking it was so fresh and different, it didn't sound like anything else. She has such a unique voice and there's a good mix of styles here while still identifiably very 90s. I think her later albums Post and Homogenics are a bit more interesting but this is solid. I hadn't listened to Bjork in ages so revisiting Debut was a real pleasure
Rv
I remember hearing Bjork’s voice the first time on The Sugarcubes “Coldsweat” and thinking to myself, “What was that?” Aside from the distinctive sound and eccentricity, I think only she can sing like that, as the native Icelandic seems to distort the inflection points of her English language in a terrific way. It’s a good album, from start to finish.
I haven't heard this in years. What a fun album! It's Bjork spreading her wings post-Sugar Cubes. There is a lot of variety and a fresh injection of electronic music - much different than her former band, and I like it. Liked Songs Added: Human Behaviour Venus As A Boy Like Someone In Love Big Time Sensuality
Heard before (and like): - Human Behaviour - Venus As A Boy
Quirky in an endearing way. Unique, but not for its own sake. Authentic self-expression through music. 4/5
I understand why people like Björk so much. I liked this album. Another “Seatbelts” twin. Some highlights: “Human Behavior”, “Venus as a Boy”, “There’s More to Life Than”, “Someone in Love”, “Big Time Sensuality” … all of her songs are fantastic. I especially loved “Crying” and “Violently Happy”. I can’t believe I never checked her out before!
Here’s your English version for Björk – Debut: ⸻ Of course I know this album — it came out right in the middle of my youth, in 1993. I still remember hearing Björk for the first time on a family vacation at Lake Garda. “Human Behaviour” sounded strange to my teenage ears, and that summer it seemed to be on MTV almost as often as 4 Non Blondes on the tiny TV in our holiday apartment. I didn’t really get into Björk until a bit later, with the excellent Homogenic in 1997. Later I discovered her second album, Post, which is still easily in my personal Top 50. But Debut is the one I never connected with as deeply. It might actually be the first time — 32 years after its release — that I’ve listened to it properly, lying in bed with headphones. And I have to say: it’s a great dance album. Thanks, 1001 Album Generator — this one made me want to dive back into Björk again.
Gut, einfach Björk. Aber nicht zu viel, sonst wirds schwierig.
Still gutted I missed her DJing in that random bar in Reykjavik when I went
Enjoyed Venus as a boy and One Day, amazing emotion and interesting singing style. Not all of them are for me though, I have to be in the right mood to listen to but interesting and I enjoyed.
Surprisingly dance-y compared to later Bjork. Enjoyable listen
Completely original. Love her voice and approach. Eclectic and enjoyable.
82/100. A good non-debut debut. While she'd been around before, this record is where Björk truly stepped into her own world. It’s packed with personality and her vocal performance is both delicate and powerful.
Not sure why I never got into this at the time. Love it, just bought it on vinyl!
Queen!
3 tracks in, very good tracks filled with electronic sounds that i love. venus as a boy is a 10/10 her voice is very pretty yeah it's the kind of music that i love, i don't really know what to add 8/10
I've listened to her stuff before, and to be honest, I wasn't a fan of her voice. Now, I finally have the chance to give her another shot. Surprisingly, I had fun listening to this album, and her voice isn’t as bad as I thought before, but still not a fan. I think it’s going to be an acquired taste for me. Favorite tracks: Human Behavior, Venus As A Boy, There Is More To Life Than This, Big Time Sensuality
What an incredible opening track of a debut album. In 'Human Behaviour' the bouncing riff sounds like a bit of bass guitar with drums mixed in (timpani I understand). Her vocals soar, and she immediately casts herself as the outsider ("if you ever get close to a human"). It's curious, it's infectious and it's pretty unique. We've had a few Björk albums, and not a single one too many. This one signposts later great works but still feels fresh today in spite of a few dates house beats. The fact it's still all coming together means it falls short of her best, but still excellent.
Debut is a gorgeous mess of textures, from huge club beats to these fragile little harp moments. I definitely gravitate toward the upbeat tracks. I really appreciate how ambitious and cohesive this feels. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions Human Behaviour Venus As a Boy Come to Me Play Dead
I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would, obviously my music tastes have changed a lot since I first heard some of these songs back in the 80s. The music stands up really well and I’ll definitely be putting it on my rotation for a while.
I haven't listened to a lot of Bjork, I am not sure what to say about Bjork, only that I like Bjork, and I will listen to more Bjork.
This is my kind of weird. Bjork has an interesting voice. It keeps you on your toes. It’s a good voice, but there’s an uneasiness that I sense about it. It’s like I don’t know if she’s going to start screaming or doing something crazy out of nowhere and I kind of like it. Musically, it’s all over the place in a good way. It’s part techno, part just straight weird, part synth. But again, I like the variety and the quirkiness of it. It’s artistic and eccentric, without being obnoxious.
i have got to make more eccentric music
This was such a decisive album when it came out - people either thought it was genius or it was dire. I was a fan of Sugarcubes so I was familiar with Björk’s quirky vocal, and I adored this album. It’s difficult to remember how unique this album was at the time especially because it hasn’t aged that well, and so much new stuff, including Björk’s own stuff, has build on it, and pushed it on. Trust me though, kids. This was groundbreaking in 1993. Björk sounds like she screams in coastal caves for warm up, and the album sounds like walking atop rainbows. The only misstep for me is the first 34 seconds of Aeroplane, and I think that’s my least favourite track. Overall, I adore this album, although it’s arguably not her best effort, and the groundbreaking nature of this earns it a place on the list.
I have heard this before. I love Bjork. I will try to not make this a gush-fest. Chances are, the less I write, the more I like something. Track 1: I have listened to this song countless times. And will listen countless more times. Utter classic. Track 2: Sonically rooted in that 90s sound. Whatever. Head boppin', body movin'. And this while the chorus makes widower me think about my late wife. She'd be boppin' and movin', too. Track 3: Another classic. Now I have to go not re-read Story Of The Eye. Track 4: Total Bop track. I wonder if there were any women in that bathroom with Bjork just wondering what was going on. Track 5: Even when Bjork doesn't write the song, you can feel her channel it. I've felt this feeling. Even if consigned to the past, what a memory to possess. What a feeling to have felt. Track 6: Like track 2, very rooted in that 90s sound. What a chorus! Another total bop. Track 7: I can't wait until my daughter fully experiences this song. Track 8: I live this song. There better be an afterlife. Track 9: Solid track. The idea of expressing a feeling as somehow breaking the charm is a nice, quaint notion, but one I've outgrown. Still a good track. A past self truth. Track 10: On the introvert-extrovert scale, I tend to skew introvert. After losing my wife, I've become way more talkative and personable. My energies are still introverted, but I realized how much heavy-lifting one person can do for you. Track 11: As a closer, and as a song itself, it's...okay. My least favorite track on the album. Just feels like there is a missing element, both musically and lyrically. A bit broad. Overall: As a debut, not really a debut. Bjork has been around. She recorded an album as a child - punk band - Sugar Cubes. But as a solo force, what an expression. 11 tracks, 10 are great or good. Anchor Song kind of messes up the average for me. Plus, knowing what is coming in her discography. Being familiar with the album, I was predicting a 4/5. While listening, I was starting to think maybe this is a 5/5. If every track is a positive, that's a 5. But then Anchor song. Then context. But fret not. Bjork has 5s. 4/5 Thanks for making me listen to this again, website.
While I’m personally not a fan of Björk, it is fascinating to see that she had her style basically from (i assume) the get-go
Such a wonderful record. This record is why I love Portishead, Tricky, PJ Harvey, and so many other incredible artists
“His wicked sense of humour suggests exciting sex.” Forget whatever shit the manosphere is spewing, and take tips from Bjork on what women want. Also, she’s incredibly charming herself on Debut - she'd make more ambitious albums but this might be the most purely enjoyable.
so different from most while still sounding appealing
From the first song, I knew this album was special. I didn’t love every single song on it, though the listening experience was undoubtedly unique. Her vocals are so distinct and even disorienting at times that this is really an album to remember. This is the kind of music I’m doing this project for.
