Reviews (page 5 of 14)
This album holds up extremely well. I wore this CD out in 2004 and kind of wish it had stayed in my rotation.
The Mr. Brightside-Smile Like You Mean It-Somebody Told Me run is one of the better 3 song runs of the 2000s.
Awesome album!
I hot fussing hate how much I enjoy this
A banger of it's oeuvre 3.5
It's weird to remember that "The Killers vs. Franz Ferdinand" ever felt like a relevant comparison, and even though I was Team FF, this is the album that gave us the "Don't Stop Believin'" of the 2000s, so it's hard to argue with that
Nothing particularly original going on, but this is a solid 3.5 album all day long. Just some amazingly catchy tunes.
peak. i feel like an american woman who has just broken up with her boyfriend and has gone to a remote village house in England during the holidays and can't sleep due to jet lag so decides to listen to some bangers
Hyvää modernia rokkia, jossa kosketinsoittimet on keskeisessä osassa. Parhaat biisit oli levyn alussa, mutta kokonaisuus on kuitenkin melko tasainen.
Jenny was a friend of mine - 4 Mr. brightside - 5 Smells like you mean it - 4 Somebody told me - 5 All these things that i've done - 5 Andy, you're a star - 3 On top - 3 Change your mind - 3 Believe me natalie - 3 Midnight show - 4 Everything will be alright - 2 Glamorous indie rock & roll - 3
Knew so many of these songs, even if I didn't recognize the titles.
The first half of this album is incredibly strong. It is packed with that early 2000s alternative rock sound, mixed with the new wave revival style that helped make The Killers stand out so much at the time. These are big, catchy, dramatic songs that feel made to be blasted in the car and sung way louder than your vocal range can responsibly handle. The hooks are sharp, the energy is high, and there’s a reason so many tracks from this album still feel instantly recognizable. The second half isn’t bad by any means. There are still some good rhythms, melodies, and ideas in there, but it does feel like the album loses a little steam after such a stacked opening run. It’s not that the later songs are weak exactly, but they don’t quite reach the same level as the first half. There are also a few lyrical choices from Brandon Flowers that get a little strange near the end (let's learn to take "no" for an answer please). So overall, Hot Fuss is definitely a front-loaded album, but when the front half is this good, that still counts for a lot. It’s nostalgic, stylish, catchy, and packed with songs that still have a ton of life in them.
This is a great album for the right time and moment. Four stars
Great hauntingly sad but also fun album, really unique sound. Got to love mr brightside
The singles do a lot of heavy lifting on this album. They're good, fun, poppy rock. The rest of the songs are decent enough, but there's nothing that stands out.
So many good songs 4
I'll be honest I didn't finish this one cuz it was late and I was getting a headache (unrelated to the album) but its got some bangers rest was alright though not necessarily my cup of tea
Forgotten how good this was. Plenty of energy throughout and each track has something slightly different about it. A proper ablum.
An extremely strong debut album. I liked this quite a lot. The Killers are also one of my fav bands. Mr. BRIGHTSIDE was one of the songs I heard the most during my time in the U.K.
Perfecto para mood de jueves ;)
Very good overall.
Buen rock
It’s always interesting rating an album you think you know but on a relisten discover there’s quite a bit more to it than you realised. Starting with the hits, Mr Brightside through to All These Things I Have Done is a supreme set of hits that don’t sound that bad at all 20 years on. They are catchy but with quality guitar and drums too, if not groundbreaking. Definite anthems of the 2000s and for a debut album it’s impressive. The album does suffer from being so front loaded though. There are some decent songs in the second half, but also some duds that sound a bit confused with the mixture of electronic and instrumental sounds. Equal parts strong nostalgia and a set of songs I will keep returning to, and songs that do very little for me!
Connaissais déjà, y'a de très bons titres (Mr.Brightside) et d'autres moins bien...
During the summer before eighth grade, I got involved in my first social media site, the now defunct Quizilla. You could make quizzes, write stories, collaboratively create "choose your own adventure" stories, and engage in other writing-based activities. I started writing a serialized detective story called "Detective Faineant" and amassed a dedicated fanbase of one person. Her screen name was ILoveVampires123, and we struck up a correspondence on the website's chat feature. I don't remember that much about her, except for the following facts: she lived in Florida, her real name started with an M, she loved vampires (presumably), and her favorite song was "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers. She asked me to be her boyfriend, but I turned her down—I didn't want my first girlfriend to be over the computer. I kind of had a crush on her, but I think really, I just liked her adoration. From time to time, I wonder about her—where is she now? Does she still write? Love vampires? Enjoy "Mr. Brightside"? I think I can comfortably say the answer to the last question is yes. Hot Fuss is a solid, fun rock album that I've never listened to, aside from the iconic aforementioned "Mr. Brightside," which is practically the millennial "Don't Stop Believing." And I've heard "Somebody Told Me," though it's never grabbed me in quite the same way. The album is sleekly produced. Packed with catchy melodies, memorable riffs, glittering synths. It lags a bit in the second half, but overall, it's a great album of the mid-2000s, and contains one of the most important songs for my generation. And it will forever be associated with my almost first online girlfriend. The review goes out to you, ILoveVampires123. I hope you're doing well.
oh i’ve heard this. there are like three amazing songs on this thing that work as closers and the one they chose sucks ass. the rest of the album is sick though.
the radio hit songs were annoying as they have been so overplayed, but the deeper cuts were better than I thought they would be. solid 3.5-4
I really dig the vibes, feels like summer and I listened to it a few times over. There were some songs I didn’t like as much, mainly Andy, You’re A Star and Everything Will Be Alright; I really liked All These Things That I’ve Done.
Such a great album! Loved it when it first came out. Great live act too!
Loved this album when it was first released, and obviously continues to make its imprint on the general public
This was a pretty decent album, kinda radioheadesque
The first half of the album is probably stronger, but it’s a really good record from start to finish. Just ignore how overplayed the songs were and try to just take them for what they are. There’s some great tracks, particularly “Glorious Indie Rock and Roll” and “Jenny was a Friend of Mine”. The massive success of the record does take away any cool factor, but it’s still great.
5 star album if you remove Mr Brightside.
An album that has aged as well as anything from this century. Didn't do much for me at the time, but a definite classic that will continue to gain lovers of it for decades.
The first half is just one banger after another, but the second half of the album is just a bunch of lackluster, mediocre tracks
son míticos, muy buenas canciones
Enjoyable. A few bangers but not my favorite through-and-through
way better than i remembered, the big songs are still bangers and the rest of the album is surprisingly strong
A blast of nostalgia. I used to love The Killers back in the mid-late noughties and it still stands up as a very good album. The first 6/7 tracks are so so good, and I'm even including 'that' one. Mr Brightside has completely lost any meaning due to being the most overplayed song of all time, but if I take myself back to 14 year old me, it's a banger. All These Things That I've Done is still one of my favourites by The Killers, there's a couple of tracks near the end that are just 'ok' but the album closer Indie Rock and Roll is fantastic. It's not quite Sam's Town, but still a brilliant record.
The first 8 tracks: no skips, just about perfect. Then it randomly takes a nosedive for the last few. As a millennial, this album is massively important in my life - it was a big deal with just about everyone. And I listened to it so much. The Killers just always has this thing where they include some absolute shit songs alongside really good ones on their albums. Every album they’ve made. The good songs, though, are just excellent. Love these corny motherfuckers for the most part. Must-listen #350
Ok, band, ki sm ga aktivno sovražila & un njihov butast komad (k je mogoč kle gor? Ne, "Human" je z naslednjega albuma. Vsaj to.). Hmmm, prvi, "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", mi je dejansko kul? "Mr. Brightside". Fak, spomnim se, ko je to izšlo, pa sm video na MTV gledala. But, never quite liked it. "Smile Like You Mean It" se ne morm odločit, a mi je kul, al kva? A se kremžim, ker mi muska ne sede; a se kremžim, ker mi sede & se sovražim zarad tega? We will never know... Uu, tega se tud spomnim ("Somebody Told Me"). "Andy, You're a Star" mi je annoyingly všeč (v protiutež, prejšnji mi je bil fakin eyerolling ("All These Things That I've Done")). Tazadn mi pa ne potegne tok for some reason ("Everything Will Be Alright"). Khm. Mja. Annoying predvsem my teenage self, I quite liked it.
Omg all these things I’ve done
A lot of hits
Front loaded powerhouse singles. The second half overall felt a bit weak however. Despite my preconceptions on this album and its compositions within the album it felt coherent despite the incessant radio play it has received. I flinched when this came on my next album but I did overall enjoy this album. A solid 4/5.
In England you can use a solid rendition of Mr. Brightside as currency in most pubs
so many bangers and classics omg
I’ve heard this album about 1,000 times, as I got caught up in The Killers in the 2000s. They were one of those cool bands, and seeing as metal and hard rock had kind of lost their way, I got into cool rock, like the Killers, the Kings of Leon, the White Stripes, and the Black Keys. I really did love those bands. Because I was cool, you know. The band plays has an updated new wave and post-punk sound. Brandon Flowers, the lead singer, also plays keyboards, which gives their music that new wave sound. Flowers was a founding member and wrote or co-wrote all the songs on Hot Fuss. This album, their debut, was a monster, selling over 7 million albums, with 2 million in the United Kingdom alone. That’s huge. The album and singles got Grammy nominations, and the Killers went on to become huge and then, kind of, not so huge, over the course of about four years and three albums. Hot Fuss was their debut, and probably their best album thus far. Track 1 is Jenny Was a Friend of Mine and it's part of the Killers’ “Murder Trilogy” with the songs Midnight Snow and Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf. Weirdly, Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf is a B-side that wasn’t released on an album until the obligatory B-sides and rarities album, Sawdust. The song starts with a familiar new wave groove, with those disco hi-hats going like a Blondie song. The keyboards remind me of The Cars. Flowers' voice isn’t that great, really, but he sings with passion. And by a familiar new wave groove, every “cool” band had songs like that. The guitars are there just to beef up the rock a bit. I think the song would be really good without guitars and more synths. Blondie was really the band that stood out to me as a kid, I’m talking, I was 5-6 years old. They perfectly meshed punk, new wave, and disco, though I guess Blondie drummer Clem Burke would credit Kraftwerk more than disco. The disco part is the poppiest part of those three music styles, which led to their success. Especially the disco high-hats in Heart of Glass. I was enamored with Deborah Harry as a kid. And, at 5-6 years old, I didn’t even know what it meant to be enamored with a woman. Plus, at that age, I don’t know where I’d have even seen her. Mom and Dad weren’t into music, at least not the way I would later become. But I had seen her somewhere, and she was burned into my brainpan for life. Track 2 is Mr. Brightside and I’d say this is their legacy. When people start singing it at sporting events, you’ve got an all-timer on your hands. The opening guitar riff is iconic at this point. Flowers' vocals are frantic on this track. More staccato high hats, not necessarily disco style though. And that chorus is just incredibly fun to sing. Cause, I’m Mr. Brightside. The song, of course, is about Flowers getting the feeling his girl was cheating on him. He went to a bar and found her making out with a dude. It’s hard to find love in Vegas. It was the first single off the album, and the Killers were off and running. Weirdly, the song was never a number one hit in the U.S., but charted in the top ten on several charts, including #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Track 3 is Smile Like You Mean It and this has a bit of a goth rock vibe to it. I really like this song, even more than Mr. Brightside. The splashy high-hat is there. I love the heavier guitar parts, but it’s not a metal song. The guitar just sounds a little tougher in parts. The keyboard riff during the chorus really sets it off. They released this as the fourth and last single. I really do love this song. It didn’t really perform well on the charts over here. It was #55 on the Billboard Modern Rock tracks for 2005. Track 4 is Somebody Told Me and talk about a great chorus to sing-along to. Listen for the disco high-hat. “Well, somebody told me you had a boyfriend Who looked like a girlfriend That I had in February of last year It's not confidential, I've got potential.” It’s another song with a great new wave groove. The guitars are the MVP of this song. They really shine during the verses with noise that sounds great. This was the second single off the album, and like the first two, it never hit number one on any U.S. charts, though it was 16 on the Billboard Modern Rock tracks for 2004. Track 5 is All These Things That I’ve Done and it was not a single. This starts like it’s going to be a big anthemic arena rock song. It’s just Flowers and an organ, then the band comes in, and guess what? It is a big anthemic arena rock song. Flowers has an effect on his voice, I think, for the whole album, but you can really hear it here. It gives his voice a bit of an echo. Flowers sure does know how to write a catchy chorus. I can see the crowd singing along to this, though it isn’t exactly a big, boisterous song. The guitar riff at the end is really cool. It’s kind of sad sounding, but tinged with hope….or something. Then we get the chant, “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier.” That’s what the crowd will be yelling back to the band at concerts. Great song. Track 6 is Andy, You’re a Star and it starts out with a big guitar riff. It also has more synth sounds from the Cars. Hmmm, it seems the song is a classic jocks vs. geeks scenario. Andy is the big high school jock, winning sports, winning girls, but now, after high school, his star has faded. Flowers, the geek, has inherited the earth, and he’s sarcastically saying, “Andy, you’re still a star in my world.” That’s hilarious, a musical revenge of the nerd. Track 7 is On Top, and while it’s not this huge single off the album, it’s a solid song. Apparently, it was one of the first songs written by the band. The drums really stand out on this track. The synths also really help push the song forward. Track 8 is Change Your Mind and it has a nice little new wave ditty played on a synth throughout the song. It brightens up what otherwise sounds, musically, like a sad song. The lyrics are quite sad, as the song seems to be about unrequited love. I think Flowers is a really good lyricist. I think maybe he puts a bit of pressure on himself to be a Bruce Springsteen or a Dylan-type rock poet. But, he’s really good at painting a picture. Track 9 is Believe Me Natalie, and it sounds very much like a U2 song, though U2 rarely uses synths like the Killers use here. The guitar plays a big Edge-like riff. Flowers again writes a sad song, as it’s about a dancer who is diagnosed with HIV in the last days of disco. There’s a heartbreaking line in there about Natalie’s mom asking her to stay with her, as it’s been a long time since they spent time together, and they know she will be gone soon. Horns come in near the end of the song as it builds to the final crescendo. I really love this song. I know when I get that feeling like I’m going to burst with emotion, it’s a good song. Track 10 is Midnight Show, and this song rocks. They’ve got some Nile Rodgers-style guitar in there. Flowers is singing his arse off on this track. This song is the second song in the “murder trilogy.” Jenny Was a Friend of Mine was the first song. The song is about the final date between Flowers and Jenny as he ends up killing her over questions of infidelity. “The crashing tide can hide a guilty girl, With jealous hearts that start with gloss and curls I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier Of stars and atmosphere And watched her disappear Into the midnight show.” The subject matter is dark, but the song is, as the kids in the streets say, a banger. Great disco high-hat going on in the chorus. Track 11 is Everything Will Be Alright and this one starts out very old school. It sounds like it could be a George Michael song from the 80s. I love this song. Flowers said he wrote it for his wife when she was going through a tough time, but it also sounds like a breakup song. It’s definitely not a buoy your spirits type of groove. Forget what I said about George Michael. This is easily a Cars song, sung by Ric Ocasek, type of song. I forgot how good this album was. It’s a homerun for sure, especially as a debut album. I don’t think they ever released another album as good as this one, though. I did really enjoy Sam’s Town, even if it was a bit too ambitious. I’m not sure I’d say this is an album you must hear before you die. Those are rare. However, I think if you’re a fan of 80s music, like the Cars, U2, other new wave and post punk bands, then you’ll dig this album.
This is one of the many albums on this list that makes me with the rating system used half stars. The first half of the album had me thinking 'oh yeah, this is an obvious 4' but then then the second half feels like they’d already used up all of the magic.
Well yes! Certified hood classic. Excited to hear this one. I've of course heard the popular songs and I've loved them. I really like this. Very solid alt rock. Very positive representation of 2000s music. Very easy and enjoyable listening. Having a great time with this. Not much more to say just a great album, good variance, great auditory experience. This is glamorous indie rock and roll. Amazing track to go out with actually. Favourite: Somebody Told Me/On Top/Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll Least favourite: Everything Will Be Alright
So it's indie rock and roll for me. With dance inspired beats and a few synth lines. Already know 6 or 7 tracks from this album. Of which 3 I would consider bangers. Honestly, the songwriting is incredible for a band this early in their career. And the synth is used carefully and sparingly mainly for texture and to evoke nostalgia. 4 tracks in and still not a new track for me! All These Things That I've Done sounds a bit more funky/soul Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll is also very well written, with key changes and little style changes throughout. Best track (new to me?) - Change Your Mind, Midnight Show 3 or 4 stars - torn because the good tracks are iconic, the less good are just fine. Give it a 4 for the huge impact the good songs have had
The first time I heard these guys was at a festival and I thought they were cool. Then they started being played on the radio and I thought their songs were still cool. It's a couple of decades later I'm listening to the album in its entirety for the first time and think the album's cool.
I've never listened to the entire album before, but was familiar with a few songs: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, and All These Things That I've Done. Great album, regardless of its "overplayed" status.
CAUSE IM MR BRIGHTSIDEEEEE tbh i dont think i had ever listened to this full album, no real standouts other than the songs i already knew (which are the ones everyone knows lol). mr brightside and somebody told me on their own are such bangers tho, so, those combined with nostalgia are driving my rating here
Good
I am surprised with how much I enjoyed this album. I always liked "Mr. Brightside" but I didn't expect the majority of the record to be on par with it. This is one of those albums that's such a strong 9/10, but I don't know if it should be 5 stars here on the site or not. Just know I fucking loved this thing, no matter what arbitrary score it receives from me. Bangers throughout, from start to end.
mr brightside kennen wij jaja good album!!!!!!
My memory of this was that it was really front loaded and then the back half was terrible. I think in reality the last few songs are better than I thought, but I could basically go without hearing all of the singles ever again. Smile Like You Mean It is still good mind. It balances out as not a bad time, so they can have a 4 and be happy.
I previously felt this was band was overrated but it turns out I can spend a lot of time with this album.
Twenty years later this remains the best The Killers album. It's also half an all time great album and half filler, with the second half weaker than the first. But what a first half! You have "All The Things That I Have Done," "Somebody Told Me," and the absolute cultural juggernaut that is "Mr. Brightside" in there. I wouldn't listen to all twelve tracks again necessarily, though I wouldn't complain if I did, but you could distill the best 5 or 6 tracks here into an absolutely killer EP (no pun intended.)
2 or 3 great songs. Rest okay
First half of album is 5 but the last half is barely a 3. 4.
Me ha gustado, sobre todo las letras.
Even tho it’s super popular, Mr. Brightside is one of my all time favorite songs. Overall I enjoyed the album a lot.
Great album for my first of this project! I don’t have much in the way of technical knowledge when it comes to music, so I’ll probably more express my own thoughts and experiences. This album came out in 2004, but took me back to 2010; in retrospect a very “rock n roll” time in my life. I was a radio Dj, modelling, dancing burlesque, dating the lead singer of a band, and doing my PhD. Tracks from this album were on my iPod shuffle. I enjoyed the feeling of nostalgia these tracks elicited. Mr Brightside stands out, and was the right choice for them to release as a single, but my absolute favourite musically has to be All These Things That I’ve Done - it has three different musical themes it transitions across, a gospel choir, and just brings vibes. I also enjoyed On Top, which I don’t think I’ve heard before. Smile Like You Mean It and Somebody Told Me are overrated, not my favourites. It was nice to be reminded of Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll, which I used to listen to regularly but had forgotten about and haven’t heard in years. The lead singer (Brandon Flowers) sounds British, but I believe he’s American Mormon. Anyway, his voice sounds amazing. I read that this album is a combo of the new wave and post-punk genres, and that Brandon Flowers was inspired by The Strokes ‘Is This It?’ album (another classic). Glad this was my first introduction to this project.
Brenden Flowers’ voice is just so phenomenal. It has this edge to it that lends itself to “Glamorous Indie Rock n Roll.” Somebody Told Me is a masterpiece I’d put above even Mr. Brightside.
I've already listened to this, I think I gave it like a 3.5????? I enjoy a couple songs a lot, but some of them fall flat
drunken singalongs
A pretty great album that just goes on a few songs too long. They were electric back in the day.
Actually the last best shot Mormons had at being culturally relevant in the 21st century. Still a great album, but not enough to make Mormonism cool.
Great banger songs
Plenty of bangers, but the album drags on in the back half.
bangers
I was surprised when I heard this released in 2004, as Hot Fuss has a very polished rock sound. Many great and well known songs in this one, although the second half of the album is noticeably weaker than the first. It is admittedly hard to listen to this one with fresh ears as many of their better songs I am very familiar with, but being as objective as possible this is a very good album, even if I have outgrown the Killers.
Terrific album, a couple of mediocre songs balancing out a string of massive hits
Really really good
Some bangers on here, very easy listen without being boring.
Ojalá nunca ser una persona tan triste como los que le han puesto a esto menos de un 3
There are a couple of standing out tracks on this album
Classic
I sighed when I got this as my first album for this random generator. I had my teen / early 20s pretentious bias at a time when I was trying to find my own music. Listening to it now I can admit the bangers that this album had in the front half. Second half isn't much more than an OK.
Great album from my youth, interesting how different it gets on the back end. Cool stuff from a band that went on to keep making hits
I thought this album was only going to be 2 hits but I’m surprised by how cohesive it is. Most of the songs are really good actually, but I feel like some songs could’ve been cut to make it tighter. Do I think this album has had a large impact on music itself, I don’t think so but it’s still quite a fun listen
Characteristic sound, good album, will not necessarilly reheae except for individual songs.
Very good! I like them.
A good album filled with many good songs.
A classic from my iPod Nano days (pre 10 years old). Nice to revisit as a grown man. There are so many BOPS on this record. The Killers' formula of overly dramatic camp pop space rock works a charm for me. A band I'd love to see live and it still bothers me that they're not British. A couple of filler songs bring this down to a 4 but enjoyed a trip down memory lane.
Pretty crazy for a debut, man. It's hard to tell with albums like this, when the songs are so oversaturated and overplayed, how good the music really is -- but in this case, I honestly think they put together a great set. They nail that indie rock sound, and even though it's ever so close to that cringy millennial sound, I think they pull it off. Pulling some grit into a modern-era sound. Solid! Fave tracks: - Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine - Mr. Brightside - Somebody Told Me - All These Things That I've Done - On Top - Believe Me Natalie - Midnight Show
4/5
Classic
One of my favourite albums, although the first five songs are better than the others
Good album, some absolute classics here. They really packed a fair amount of hits into here, I enjoyed this.
Wow this is pretty fire. Totally belongs in the category with other indie rock hit albums like Is This It and AM.
Fabulous. A toe-tapping bop.
Yes. 3.9
I recognized (and liked) a few of these, and the rest were solid. Not a genre that I usually chase down, but it's good stuff and I approve.
Glamorous Indie rock and roll is all I want. It's a really great album, albeit with a few duds scattered in there. So many great hits. However, immediately after this album finished, a track from Sam's town played and reminded me as to why I prefer that album. Hot Fuss is great nonetheless. Favourites: Somebody Told Me All These Things That I've Done Change Your Mind Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll
This is such a great album. For sure in my top 30
I like the killers and expected big things from the deep cuts from this album since the hits are so big. Alas, it is really front loaded. The opening is still absolutely brilliant, the bass and drums on jenny are so good. The second half of the album really drags it down to 4 stars.
First half of this album is straight anthemic arena rock. The second half of the album falls off a bit, but I do like the closing “Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll”.
Jenny was a friend of mine- 4.5/10 Mr. Brightside- 7/10 (have it in my playlist) Smile like you mean it- 4/10 Somebody told me- 5/10 (i like it) All these things that I've done- 6/10 (i liked it after the 2 minute mark) Andy, youre a star- 7/10 On top- 8/10 (added to playlist) Change your mind- 4/10 Believe me Natalie- 3.5/10 Midnight show- 4/10 Everything will be alright- 7/10 (so sad, i love it + added to playlist) Glamorous indie rock & roll- 5/10
The sound of my mid-20s... Strong debut - their later output wasn't as good.
Ya lo había escuchado, y me parece que tiene buenas canciones al inicio, pero decae para el final, que no tiene tantos buenos temas. Aparte, este disco tiene el inmortal Mr Brightside, por lo que ya está inmortalizado.
Surprisingly really cool and couple songs i love eg jenny was a friend of mine mr brightside etc
What is solid first album by a Vegas local band nonetheless some of these songs, man they have some childhood memories to them I mean growing up you got to scream, Mr. Brightside somebody told me all the things I’ve done God I always remember hearing these songs on the drive to school nostalgia is weighing this album very well you know what I think if I need a smile throw on hot fuzz
A new found love for the killers!! THIS IS WHY WE DO THIS!! This album was awesome!!
One long song in twelve parts, but it's a very good song!
white people get fucking turnt! i am the white people in question! The first half of the album might be among the strongest A-sides EVER. I thoroughly enjoyed Hot Fuss and you best believe im a happy little cracker the moment mr brightside goes on in the club Fav Song: jenny was a friend of mine Least Fav: everything will be alright
Sophie - It was genuinely such a pleasure to listen to this album the whole way through again. It makes me feel like a teenager just discovering music again. I honestly forgot how much I enjoy this album, my only skip would be Everything Will Be Alright. Such a solid album though. 4/5
Big fan of this album when released and big fan of it now. Contains some generational classics as well as some very decent album ‘fillers’.
Never gave this album a chance just had listened to Mr. Brightside. I have to say this is way more than I expected for an album with one song becoming mega-viral. Everything you want in a 2000s alt rock album.
idk why there were remixes but honestly some of the best music ive heard
4/5 gotta do it
Listening to this made me realize how many songs off this album I listen to regularly and how much I actually love The Killers. Fuck yeah.
Best song - somebody told me
Me pareció interesante la mezcla de electrónica, rock… no es un disco que me desagrade, pero solo salvaría algunas canciones
Amazing side one. One of the best sides ever. The side two is mediocre.
Nice to listen to some music from when I was a child
Timeless
Spaccato, change your mind la migliore dell’album ma è difficile fare un’effettiva classifica: un capolavoro di album
It was 2004, I was working a dead-end job in a supermarket and the three K’s were on rotation on the CD player in my car. Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian and The Killers. I must admit, at the time, Kasabian got played the most, but this was a very close second. This album opens brilliantly with Jenny Was a Friend of Mine. Obviously Mr Brightside gets played to fuck everywhere, but it is still a good tune when you’ve not heard it for a while. But for me, the real standout track on this record is Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll. There’s just something about Brandon Flowers vocals on this track that draws me in. It’s nice to revisit this album again after not having listened to it fully for a long time. I think it’s a close race for which one I prefer, this or Sam’s Town. It brings back memories of driving home in late spring with the windows down after working a late shift. I’m going with four stars as a lot of the tracks are very good rock songs, but it’s probably more for the nostalgia. Standout track - Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll
A solid 4. The hits are good. The rest is fine. Oddly not too much to write home about but still good The whole way through. An important album
This is a louche, lounge lizard of an album.
Ganz nett. Brightside und sombody told me bangers
Absolute essential indie rock. This album definitely shows the pop side of the genre more, however the more rock oriented songs are the better tracks. While Sam's town is a million miles better, Hot Fuss still has some great music that engrains itself as timeless 2000's indie forever.
8/10 Favorite: Mr. Brightside
Loved what I knew, liked what I didn’t. Best is All These Things That I’ve Done
I didn't expect to enjoy this album as much as I am. Mr. Brightside is now stuck in my head, of course. This album has all the hits that were overplayed on the radio, but I have to say they are fun. Yeah I like this album.
This album has stayed with me since college. Every song is good, if not great.
The grin I grinned when I realized this was my album today is probably illegal. Starting off so strong with Jenny Was a Friend of Mine. It’s a slower start to the album, but it sets such a president for the rest of it. The best is yet to come. I don’t think I could ever say anything bad about Mr. Brightside. I know it’s the typical white person bar song, but it is for a reason. It’s a classic. Smile Like You Mean It is probably one of my favourite tracks on the album. It’s upbeat, but the lyrics have such a sadness to them. Somebody told me is just a track that is ment to be danced to. All These Things that I’ve Done — such a beautiful track. Again, that element of misery but also hope. Andy You’re a Star is also a very good track, I don’t think it reaches the heights of some of the others, but I still like it. On Top has some really great moments. Change Your Mind and Believe me Natalie both carried on the album nicely. The horns and strings at the end of the latter were so good. Midnight show was the first track I ever heard off this album apart from the obvious two. It has such an element of nostalgia for me. Glamorous indie rock and roll ends it very well. 4.5/5 ⭐️ 81/1089
I only knew the obvious mainstream songs from this album, which (for a reason) are BANGERS so i was already looking forward to this. I was then pleasantly surprised by the rest of this album, the electronic sounds and the calmer beats aswell. Who’s Jennie, Andy and Natalie tho? And why is the end of “Change your mind” not in a series-intro?
Every big hit is on this, Mr Brightside is a classic for a reason. 3.9/5
This is the only Killers album I own. Safe to assume then, I like it.
As far as post-2000 alt rock goes, it really doesn't get better than this. Favorite track: Mr. Brightside
Knowing this is probably The Killers' best now unsettles me since this was kind of a let down (apart from the hits). The synth riffs/solos are annoying and the reason this was almost a 3-star instead of 4.
impressive amount of hits for a debut album
i will scream from the rooftops for every that the killers are more than just Mr brightside
Wo ist solche Musik und die Kultur dazu hin?
Muy buenos riffs
Believe me Natalie, że ten album powinien mieć 3,5, pzdr
Very nice rock n roll revival
Ridiculously iconic for a first album
The first six tracks are just brilliant. Loses some momentum after that but still a low 4
Great album from a time long past (the early 2000s). Fun, catchy, mostly full of bangers that still hold up until this day.
Ahhhh fab! Loved every second what a great album Here’s my top 3 1)somebody told me 2) mr brightside 3) jenny was a friend of mine
Maybe a bit overrated, but still a good and fun listen.
I remember reading the Yahoo reviews when this was first released and one said “I didn’t know Duran Duran were still around.” Anyway, I really like this album, first half definitely better than the second half, almost where the second half has more filler? Seems their other albums that followed never captured the magic this first one had.
The album is a very enjoyable alternative rock record that uses its influences in a modern and energetic way. I especially liked the processing on the vocals which makes them stand out and stay very recognizable throughout the tracks. It is a great listen with iconic songs and a solid production that keeps the energy high until the very end.
I liked it more than I thought I would
Definitely some nostalgia tilting the scales here but this is a great album. Pure uncut early 2000s bangers. The first half is flawless. The second half loses steam just a bit, bumping it down to 4 stars.
This was a great first album for a band. This alternative rock with a pop/synth emphasis. Good riffs from the both the keyboard and guitars. Brandon Flowers has a good theatrical voice. Reminded of Muse at times.
High 3? Impressive for a first record but some of the more popular tracks drive me nuts
I listened to this album when it was released, but I didn't get obsessed with the Killers like a lot of people seemed to be at the time. These songs are bangers, though, it's hard to deny.
Back in the day I wasn't especially a Killers fan, but listening now I still knew 7 out of 12 songs from radio play or the zeitgeist. I'm nostalgic for the time when a rock album could get that huge.
I was familiar with the band's name. However, I associated it more with a band from the 70s. I really enjoyed the album. I'd like to listen to it again. 4/5
4/5. Great first half that's strong enough to carry an okay second.
4/5
Album is carried hard by the hits, but there’s no bad track.
I have this cd somewhere, but I haven't listened to it in, what, a decade? I'm kinda surprised that my reaction to it is just the same as it was then... super catchy, super fun, but without any real depth or emotional connection. A great album when you need that perfect mix of angst, joy, and singing at the top of your lungs... and then you want to leave it all behind. - Heard before? Bought it when it came out. - Will I listen again? I hope so, maybe in another 10 years? - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? I'm torn. As much as I like this album, I also wonder if this is just the perfect amount of Killers for one lifetime.
The Killers is a great album that is an easy listen with only skipping 1 or 2 tracks. I owned this cd when it was released.
Krasse Erfahrung. Soundtrack of my life, unfreiwillig. Dafür
Hot Fuss by The Killers was one of those unexpected treasures. I found it in a small stack of CDs my wife had not long after we started dating—maybe after we were already married; the timeline’s a little fuzzy now. I knew a couple of their big radio singles, but the album truly hooked me with its haunting opener, “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,” and it never really let go. While the back half loses a bit of that initial edge and not every song hits with the same punch, the tracks remain catchy and solid in their own right. The Killers blended alternative rock, new wave, and dance rock in a way that felt both fresh and strangely familiar—a difficult balance to strike, and they nailed it. By the mid-to-late 2000s, I’d more or less given up on discovering new music, but Hot Fuss reminded me that there was still great stuff out there waiting to be found.
Let me just say - This is a good album. It's rare that you know half of an album without having listened to it. These guys really had lightning in a bottle for this album and it shows. The music is well crafted and enjoyable to listen to. The only drawback for me are the vocals. Though they really lock with the music well, I find them one-dimensional and lacking in character and nuance. He just stays in one vocal tone ALL the time and it gets old. It's the furthest you can go talk-singing without going full Vince Neil.
Better than i expected.
2. helfti vom album han ich ziemlich enjoyed, ersti naja
Very impressive album actually 8/10
I've known a few of these thanks to my brother's music taste, he never outright shared them with me, so all I could do was steal them when he wasn't looking. _______________________________________________________________________ "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine": Sinister and fun, I really like the way the vocals sound, combined with the way the melody switches from suspenseful to upbeat. "Mr. Brightside": An all times clasic, kinda hard to relate to it without sounding like a total loser, but I like it a lot. "Smile Like You Mean It": It’s fun how the vocals go much slower than what the song seems to want to go, it's a little sappy, and I like it because of that. "Somebody Told Me": At this point is clear the killers really like having something like an A and B melody, it’s like they mesh two songs that would sound fine on their own to make something interesting. At the very least, it impresses me, but I hope that won't be all of their tricks up their sleeves. "All These Things That I've Done": For a title like that, it's surprising how funky this song is. I'm always up for these types of sounds, a little way too much sentimental, but alas i am a sentimental one too. "Andy, You're a Star": One, if not my favorite from the whole album, god i relate so much. It goes between pure hatred and jealousy and untold love, man, what an amazing song. "On Top": Now this! This feels like its own complete thing! Really cool and explosive, I also feel like even though the lyrics are cheerful, they're hiding some sort of early celebration? like the feeling that you've made it, but you've really not done anything yet, maybe more like anticipation then. "Change Your Mind": My GOD this song was made for me. There’s nothing left in this love but hope. Needy and clingy, but if there’s a spark somewhere, isn’t it cruel not to have hope for something else? What a nice and sappy song, also really short. "Believe Me Natalie": The crescendo is clear, while building from the high intensity of the previous track, it brings it to the forefront with more urgency, and at the same time, it slows the melody down. Really sweet and sad, the lyrics also convey the same clinginess as well. "Midnight Show": Starts strong, but i dont feel too much about it by the end, even though it has more variety in lyrics, it becomes all jumbled down once it’s over. I'm trying to avoid reading into others' interpretations, but there seems to be a story within some of these as a whole, maybe that’s why I'm not engaging with it as a whole? idk "Everything Will Be Alright": CHRISTMAS SONG. I'm kidding, but yeah i like its lullaby feel, a bit too much, but I cannot get it out of my mind. "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll": Here it is! The album closer! very sarcastic, maybe too much, cmon man, do you really need to do this much? Maybe so haha, it wasn’t working for me at the beginning because of how much of a downer it is, hold on i think it still isn't working for me. This album screams middle school, in all the best and worst ways possible. Some songs are way better than others, but I dig the sound!. I think I'll keep on listening to them for a long while.
Thought I didn’t like these guys. Turns out… I DO! Real top heavy album though- 4 bangers. A star for each, why not.
I think “I got sold but I’m not a soldier” is a better lyric
If I had ever owned this on vinyl, I imagine I would've played out Side A and had a limited appreciation for Side B. It's not that the second half of the album is bad. It's just that the first half of the album (first five songs in particular) are incredibly catchy, well-done pop/rock songs (most of which were radio hits as well...kind of at the end of when that mattered in the mid oughts). A solid album that gets a four for the first five songs alone, but also "Change Your Mind" and "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll".
Nostalgic so I probably won't be objective. The first half of the album is good, but the latter drags.
I dont have much to say about this album. I really dont. The first half feels like a greatest hits album and the second half feels like filler. I will not be revisiting this album again. 3 stars Saved songs: Mr brightside, somebody told me, on top Was this album better than yesterday’s album, Stardust by Willie Nelson? Yes.
The Killers – Hot Fuss (2004) On Day 60, Hot Fuss was exactly the rescue mission I needed. I actually enjoyed the album quite a bit, it’s a solid 4/5. While there weren't quite enough favorite songs across the whole tracklist to push it to a 5, the standouts were incredibly high-quality. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Andy, You're a Star, and Somebody Told Me all had great energy. However, the absolute best of them all was All These Things That I've Done. The harmony and the way they integrated the choir were so good that I found myself playing it five times in a row. I got hooked easily; that track alone has the kind of triumphant soul that makes the whole experience worth it. Good stuff right there.
Somebody told me, all these things ive done
14 year old me should have listened to the whole thing
Starts out strong and in retrospect the first half feels like a greatest hits album. It loses some momentum in the second half but is decent all the way through. Not my favorite pop-rock of the era, and not my favorite album of theirs either, but it’s undeniably a classic. However, some of the songs have been overplayed on the radio and at bars, sports stadiums, and other public spaces for years, so revisiting the album now, it wears a little thin.
Really enjoyed
I’m 39 so I am biologically predisposed to adore this album.
"Hot Fuss" is chock-full of thumpingly good tunes that evoke a whiff of Duran Duran mixed with pure Britpop swagger. At their best, these songs are brimming with melody, soaring choruses, and hooks aplenty. The keyboards, in particular, provide that splash of colour that demands the listener's attention. Brandon Flowers’ vocals possess a nervous urgency, heavily treated with the Echo Farm effect; he sounds like a man desperate to deliver a message, not unlike a public speaker at Hyde Park Corner. The album is famously front-loaded, with the first five tracks hitting hard in quick succession. This opening run culminates in the sublime "All These Things That I’ve Done", a track anchored by a brilliant guitar riff that remains one of the definitive anthems of the era. It is rare for any debut to maintain the stratospheric quality of such an opening salvo, and that holds true here. While the momentum shifts with "Andy, You’re a Star", its Lou Reed and Velvet Underground-inspired riff, combined with a clever use of dynamics, maintains a high standard. This effectively sets the tone for the remainder of the record; the subsequent songs follow a similar template to those opening anthems, and there isn’t a bad track to be found. In fact, they are all remarkably strong, yet they struggle to hit the same heights and are inevitably overshadowed by the initial sugar-rush of the opening hits. A strong four-star album. 1 "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" (5/5) 2 "Mr. Brightside" (5/5) 3 "Smile Like You Mean It" (5/5) 4 "Somebody Told Me" (5/5) 5 "All These Things That I've Done" (5/5) 6 "Andy, You're a Star" (4/5) 7 "On Top" (4/5) 8 "Change Your Mind" (4/5) 9 "Believe Me Natalie" (4/5) 10 "Midnight Show" (4/5) 11 "Everything Will Be Alright" (4/5) Total - 49 Average - 4.45 246/1001 135/246 albums reviewed were new to me
Album #1,045 I've heard a few of their songs before, introduced via Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The singer has a distinctive voice, sometimes too heavy on the effects, but they have a cool sound. "Smile like you mean it <ooooh eeee ooooh, ooooh eeee ooooh>." First half better than the second, but pretty good indie rock overall.
There are 2 great songs on here that I know. “Mr. Brightside,” a sad story about cheating turned into a stadium anthem, even after 20 years, and “Somebody Told Me,” which has an infectious drum pattern and great lyrics.
This album had me in a chokehold in my mid teens, now it has me in a chokehold in my mid twenties. Life is good
I mean, it is that album that everyone knows and loves. I can see why this is on here. There’s not really much to day about it. From start to finish just a glorious production. The bass lines are something else. I mean they aren’t my favourite band, but I’m here for this album.
Some obvious bangers on here , Jenny was a friend of mine great opener The bass tone and riff really well wrote And a hooky melody over top with the synths Ronnie Vannuci hitting them drums like they owe him money with those big fat sounding craviottos of his Just a very cool pop album and Brandon flowers I’ve always rated as a singer , delivers some really hooky choruses and synth lines , he was inspired heavily by the pet shop boys so I can hear where he gets those soundscapes from in his tunes
Didn't have too much time to listen but undeniable 4
This is a classic for sure. The highs are incredibly high, but some of the songs in the latter half don’t quite reach it for me enough to be a 5
Great indie rock album, enjoyed the tunes
song i went back to first after first full listen: all these things that i've done
This is a strong standout debut album with several great bangers. A very interesting effort from a band that has its own unique style and sound. A true 9/10 or 4.5/5. I’ll stop just short of the round up since for me it doesn’t quite make the needle drop play through test. 4.5/5
A pretty incredible debut for a band that definitely carved out their own unique sound. I forgot just how loaded the front half of this one is with full on bangers that are both catchy and unpredictable. The back half drags a bit compared to those first 5-6 tracks, and is probably the only reason it doesn’t make it to a forever 5 rating. Still a really solid listen.
Like Herbie, this album is fully loaded. Man there are some hits on here, and some lesser known songs that really hold up to. Such an impressive debut, and I think I even like the sound they evolved into after this better.
Strong out of the gate. Sounds massive, great riffs, great vocals. A few songs in and I was thinking this could possibly get rounded up to a 5. Would that be the first one for the 2000s? 🤔 But back half of the album just wasn’t as strong as the start. Still solid and enjoyable but pulled me back. 4.5
Amazing run of tracks to open the album. Fizzles a bit in the second half but still an easy 4 IMO. 4/5
Has some 10/10 songs but doesn't end up being a 10/10 album
the oc coded!
Very iconic album but I did feel weird listening to it at 5 in the morning and not at a party
I really liked this. I expect it will become even better with repeated listens.
Great album
Like it’s a good album but I wanted more
Lot of nostalgia going into this one. Pretty stacked album but drops off a bit in the second half.
Front loaded with nostalgic bangers
Really nice, euphoric rock album.
Absolutely slammed by mega hits through the first 5 songs. All These Things That I've Done is an incredibly fun high energy song. Didn't realize they got so funky with some of the synth parts in a few of these songs. The Killers are going to go down as an all time band that puts on all time live performances and it's well deserved. They sure do know how to write awesome songs. This was so close to a 5 but there were some songs that were a bit of a let down so it's a high 4
Bassline on Jenny is always welcome. Obviously Mr. Brightside is a singalong for any millennial. The biggest problem with it and Somebody Told Me is that they're just too overplayed. But they are damn catchy. Smile Like You Mean is a fun one and All These Things That I've Done is probably their best song. Album start incredibly hot and cooled off a bit on the second half, but I still think it warrants a 4.
I loved this album when it was released. Still some strong songs on here but it hasn't aged well. The singers voice can be grating, dubious lyrics, toylike synths, uninspiring guitars. The drums are strong and Mr brightside is outstanding.
Solid album with a few tracks that are in my regular rotation.
Da hora o álbum, duas músicas muito famosas nele. Gosto do som, me lembra a juventude, uma banda local de rock tocando no Bovary. Já é mais meu estilo, e tem músicas picas. Daria 3.5, mas vou com 4.0 então.
Great album! I knew the singles but not the album- and also I didn’t realise so many hit singles were on the same album! I like the strong melodies and anthemic quality- the kind of songs that are fun to sing along to in a crowd. Deducting a star for terrible lyrics.
Great start and ending, let down a bit in the middle
Better than I was expecting. I was familiar with two songs, and I like them. I realised I knew another song during the listen that I liked too. The other songs had interesting melodies and production too.
Yeah I get why people like this
Genre: Post-Punk Revival It's impressive how well all of these mid-aughts rock records have aged. From the Arctic Monkeys to Coldplay to Franz Ferdinand to The White Stripes, to this. This thing rules. I think, though, having been a kid (10-11 years old) when this album was kicking off certainly plays a factor, but the greatness of this album goes beyond my nostalgia. This is a great pop rock record, full of catchy songwriting, anthemic, epic moments, and it's just a great time. It's not perfect, but it's a total gem, and chock full of hits, too. I GOT SOUL, BUT I'M NOT A SOLDIER. 4/5
Coupla real stinkers near the end here.
I’ll never forget the people scream singing Mr. Brightside on repeat at 3am while camping at the Renaissance Faire. Going over to yell at them to shut up and finding all of them completely naked will forever be burned in my brain when I think about this song.
has too many bangers for an average band
Somehow never listened to this from start to finish despite having heard every track on its own a million times. Sam's Town is better but this is still great
Yep, still good. I didn’t know about the references to biblical text or questions about them being a Christian band until only a few years ago and it actually made me like them more. I like the “open to expression” style of lyrics and their use of music to explore their own beliefs. Anyway, besides the deep shut, it’s a really fun album and one I would happily listen to on repeat. I bet they would be a fun band to see live. Of course All These Things That I’ve Done is amazing and technically probably my favorite, I have to pick something different for… Standout: Andy You’re a Star or Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll. Brandon’s voice is so damn good.
Bumpin
I love this one but I'm honestly wondering why there has been no revision to replace it or ALSO include Sam's Town
I don't know that I've evr listened to this front to back, so I didn't realize how many bangers were on this one album. Not always a genre or sound I reach for, but enjoyed it.
Surprisingly fun, much more fun than I'd ever expect. Idk if I should be ashamed of liking The Killers, maybe I should be. So sybau y'all
4/5 - This is somewhere between a 4 and a 5 for me. It's a remarkable debut album with a packed front half. I'm probably dinging it just because I've listened to it so much in the past, and some songs didn't hold up as well as I remembered, but still, really good stuff. "Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll" is a truly silly song; would have loved to see that live back then.
I can't deny the hits. The non-hits are pretty average though.
This album was very good. This is a top tier rock album. It goes on different directions but every sound is so good.
Didnt expect to like it that much
Great album, I’m just a little tired of it personally
Thats good, this kind of indie rock always has a least one good song on the album, and this one have more then one. There are songs that dont impact the listener, but most of it is good. Mr. Brightside and somebody told me are classic of the genre, and i like it.
anthemic indie rock vibes
first album i know (actually know)! lot of loud noise, lot of bangers also and im feeling good so gonna round it up today
2. mr.brightside 4. somebody told me
I was surprised to learn The Killers are not a British band. I hear similarities to The Cure, but I enjoy this more. Mr. Brightside is obviously a singalong, but I feel the same about Jenny Was a Friend of Mine. Some of the less famous songs sound good, as well.
Starting off I had most of these songs already Liked so I knew I would overall really like listening to this album, so I tried to be extra critical of it. I will admit the songs don't go deep enough and are very surface level. I needed to look up a lot of them and figure out what exactly he was trying to sing about because I don't think he went far enough with the lyrics. I also see a little fboy, douchyness here, its early 2000's indie hipster boy energy that can be a little too far and too 'cool.' However, I can't help but love it and want to sing and dance along. They are catchy and fun and give a happy energy to hipster emo indie rock feelings.
Great choruses, a little bit of filler, but it really feels like soaring!
I already love the killers but giving it a full listen needs to be done.
[9:38 a. m., 7/1/2026] Johana: smile like you mean it [10:20 a. m., 7/1/2026] Johana: Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll
What a fantastic album. Truly this is the sound of my college days (dating myself). I listened to this album on repeat, and the first half is all on my Liked songs playlist already. It's a 4 star album because I like it so much, it has that good good nostalgia hit, and it's so easy to listen to over and over. It's not a 5 star album because the first half is just so solid and the second half doesn't meet the same quality.
Ahhhhh The Killers! This record was absolutely critical to folks my age back in 2004. But I never gave it a chance - it was too popular, for one, and it didn't help that I thought "Somebody Told Me" was just a retread of Blur's "Girls and Boys," another song I can't stand. But then - this record also has some of my favorite tunes from that time period - particularly "All These Things That I've Done." A better than average rock record. FOUR STARS
Super listenable. So many fun hits. Was jammin.
Classic. Indie (or what was indie) at its finest. A whiff of folkyness gives us the impression there might be a gram of truth in all this heartbreak.
I was really excited to listen to this album. I've heard the hits so many times but never heard the vision as a whole. I thought it was excellent. The first half is definitely stronger than the latter half. The lyrics are nothing groundbreaking, but they do dig deep enough to leave an impact. Vocal performance is good, mixing is a little bit messy in places, but where it's good, it's REALLY good. Mostly highs with a few lows towards the end. Nothing on this record was truly bad. This is what the mid 2000s sounds like to me. My childhood. My rating might be a little bit high, but I think it's deserved. Mr. Brightside is a treasure of a song. Solid 4/5.
obviously it contains the banger played at every college party ever. but the rest of the album is also pretty enjoyable. I rlly enjoy the classic indie rock sound, and it’s definitely solid throughout. definitely will come back to this one. 4/5⭐️
Many have tried to recreate this kind of synth-tinted indie rock and very few have matched this quality. Stadium bangers and esoteric deep cuts on the same album and it’s so good front to back.
Очень классное насыщенное звучание , неплохая лирика , но пару песен не понравилось
A great album! Really nostalgic, I love The Killers!
Was coo
This is such a classic. I can totally understand why it’s on the list.
This album is a very catchy album. My favourite song was Andy you’re a star.
Through the first 4 overplayed tracks I thought this album was for the bin, but the rest of it surprised me
The first 5 songs are incredible. The rest are hit or miss. 3.5 rounded up for nostalgia.
Richtig toll
Added a good amount of songs from this one! Had two liked already!!
I love the cult classic songs by The Killers and even a couple of their more obscure/less mainstream ones, but I'm ashamed to admit that even in the year of our Lord 2026, I had never listened to this entire album before. While listening to this, I can see why the popular ones are popular and why the other ones kind of faded into oblivion.
Quite good
Good Stuff! 4 *
Yep
So much more here than just one, ridiculously overplayed song. Sam’s Town better though, sorry not sorry. 4/5
Ridiculously front-loaded, the first 5 tracks are genuinely great. Tracks 2-5 were inescapable on the radio at the time, listening to this is like a time warp back to the mid 2000s. The second half is pretty forgettable, no real standouts there for me.
Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done, Smile Like You Mean It
Just some absolute bangers on here. Not sure how much is down to music ability or prowess, or just nostalgia and familiarity but there is a good groove and some string arrangements and production. Also slightly overlooking Brandon and his weird ways too, but feels like a 4* to me
Coldplay left me well, cold
First half is entirely bangers sorry!
Great use of drums
Fave trackz: somebody told me & believe me natalie
Heard this a million times. Favorites: Andy You’re a Star, Change Your Mind, All These Things…
Wow. This album is banger after banger. Is this a guilty pleasure album? Possibly. I want to be harder on it, rate it lower for being schlock or something. It's not a grand political statement, sweeping concept epic, or pioneering of anything new. It's just really good rock and roll for the 2000's. Can't quite bring myself to give it a full 5-stars, but it is easily 4+. 4.5/5
Quite a few really good hit songs on this album.
Vraiment l'album de karaoké par excellence, j'ai tellement beuglé Mr Brightside et Somebody Told Me. Bien emo, bien chouette 4/5
corn ball at times. incredibly so. but if you set yourself free from the cringe, incredible nostalgic, fun, and fresh (still) after all this time. cohesive without being repetitive, but im biased cuz I already love this album. nostalgia factor added an extra star here to be fair.
Stadium-sized ambition in a debut record probably made in a basement. This has massive bangers, distinctive sound- the playing isn't mythically good but it's greater than the sum of its parts. For the number of bangers alone and fully formed sound it deserves respect
3️⃣.5️⃣
Really good album. Lots of strong singles that I remember from high school and college came off of this one. I don’t absolutely love it because it gets a bit samey in the middle for me, but it’s strong. Biggest revelation on listening was Andy, You’re a Star; I wasn’t aware of this song before and it caught me off-guard with how much I enjoyed it.
- i was definitely surprised how good it was - i mean come on everyones heard “mr brightside” and “somebody told me” - dude the production on this album is SOOO good - feels very 80’s-synth pop-esque - his voice kinda throws me off tho ~fave song~ “Somebody Told Me”
I enjoyed this album. My favorite song on it probably is still the one I knew beforehand, Mr brightside, but I learned of a lot of songs I now really like. My favorite song that I learned while listening to this album is probably somebody told me. I will probably listen to this album again.
it's good and fun, just not something i'd go out of my way to relisten
A pleasant ride. I was not the biggest fan of this when it came out, but listening to it was a pleasurable experience.
I’ve heard a few of the songs before but never the whole album, I wasn’t paying 100% attention though because I was shopping. favorites: Smile Like You Mean It, All These Things That I’ve Done, Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll
Wow, haven't heard this one in years. Almost no skips, great sound. Amazing basslines all around accompanied by good synthesizes. One of many bands who can't get past the quality of their first album. Not even close in this case. On top is still my favorite, midnight show aged very well! First time I listened to change your mind (not included in UK version), good one.
Me gusta la voz del cantante. Buena mezcla de rock con un toque de homosexualidad. Me gusta más la primera mitad que la segunda. Gran canción para cerrar el álbum.
Fun album. Some forgettable songs keep it from being a 5.
Great album with several jams
I can't believe this album is over 20 years old already.
Haaa oui, ça ça ma fait plaisir.
The indie / post-punk isn't really my favorite genre of music. But I like the vibe of the album and wouldn't mind listening to it again. Would recommend for a house part with some friends as it isn't hard to listen to, but adds a fun upbeat vibe to the room. 7/10
Mr Brightside leapt out because of Trainspotting. Other tracks consistently good
An Era-Defining Album. Side A is undoubtedly better than Side B, but there are no duff tracks at all.
Enjoyed it. First listen in years.
Like this despite myself
Its good
There’s half of a brilliant album here before it meanders out a bit. Still that opening 5 song run hits like millennial crack.
Having only listened to Mr. Brightside, I had high hopes for this album and it delivered. I loved the tone of the guitar and the singer's voice. Definitely an album to listen to on a long drive with your windows down. Bonus that there was a song with my name in it!
