Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Not super my thing, but it was short and not terrible. It's something 🎉
Not bad but toooo American for me
15 mins nice
That was intense and I liked it but I couldn’t take much more than the 15 min runtime.
3.5/5
Short, but goes hard. I kinda liked this, but probably not enough to go back. 3/5
Highlights: Operation, Live Fast Die Young In a nutshell: unpretentious AF. Simple, fast punk. If you like Pennywise, NOFX, Anti-Flag and early Amyl and the Sniffers, and you have not heard of Circle Jerks before, you’ll wonder why you haven’t heard this album earlier. As for the people not into punk, listen to the drumming and guitars. Think Sex Pistols meets Ramones. Overall: 5/10
I appreciate sentiment more than the delivery vehicle. Too punk for me, sorry.
It was fine. Probably good for punk, if it's your thing. It's not my thing.
It’s silly, but I am not mad at it.
It was ok
Punk rules. Good music, and some anarchy.
Furiosos golpes de guitarra en acordes menores, batería veloz y bramidos hablando de sexo ("I Just Want Some Skank") y drogas ("Wasted"). También se permiten incursiones en temáticas más sociales, como "Beverly Hills" y su crítica de los ricos ociosos, y políticos, como "Paid Vacation" y sus sarcásticas y concisas preguntas a cuenta de la guerra de Afganistán.
15 minutes! As a kid I remember wondering how songs could possibly be longer than 2 minutes. Punk music was my adolescence. Funny that it feels refreshing. Almost calming. I hadn't heard this album before, but I've heard lots of it's offspring. I enjoyed this. Some nice little musical moments mixed in.
Fun
Better than I expected. Raw. It’s piqued my interest. One to circle back around to. But I’m not jerking nothing, yet.
More US Hardcore on here than I was expecting which is fine I suppose.
Could be 12 tracks could be the same track 12 times who knows.
Super raw, kind of direct lyrics and really in your faces, super fast moving chords and most of the melodys just seem to follow the movement. I like the energy but it might be a bit too much for me. A lot of short songs, the whole thing is like 15mins, it was like a bunch of choruses back to back
Short, fast, and snarky hardcore tracks, several of which are quite good.
I wish I liked punk. I have to admit, though, there's something charming about leaning into the cliched absurdity of the ultra short punk song in such a way. 14 songs in 15 minutes is sort of hilarious. And, as a bonus, It's better than the Black Flag album.
Wow great great punk, they can shred too. This album made my hyper 3.3
I have to respect the efficiency of this album, with each song averaging a minute in length and the whole album lasting a grand total of sixteen minutes. Not exactly my thing, though.
I have quickly into 4 tracks. Love this. Truly never listened to this band. I love this like it's new to me and I respect this earl-punk/ska movement,
Sure, it was a decent punk album that pretty much gives you what you'd expect. But at such a short runtime, I had plenty of time left over to tackle another album, so now I'm going to review Diamond Life by Sade, which I also listened to for the first time today. Maybe it's on the 1001 Albums list, but if it's not, it should be. It's silky-smooth 80s pop that relies on the saxophone, but doesn't insist upon it, which is an important distinction. The balance is perfect and makes it a quintessential album for this era without opening itself to parody. 5/5 stars.
Notable tracks: Live Fast Die Young, World up My Ass, Deny Everything, Don’t Care
Bit of punk for my Wednesday afternoon
Rips
Deny Everything I Just Want Some Skank World up My Ass Live Fast Die Young There’s something about a 15 min album. Especially compared to a 3 hour album. While the three hour album is slow and trying to savor the moment and has slow transitions the 15 min album is like a sprint. Fast. Changes quickly. Keeps you on your toes. This album was great.
No entenc la gràcia de cançons tan curtes però sí que m'ha agradat escoltar tot l'àlbum seguit, crec que és si més no interessant. ELR: 2/5
LOL @ Operation being about a vasectomy. Punk has such a high energy, and this album is no different. Some fun lyrics throughout. Can relate to the sentiment behind World Up My Ass. Prescient song with Paid Vacation. Not too much to say because the album was super short, but I enjoyed it.
Shit fucks
If you need a reason to listen to this album, do it to experience Lucky hitting those skins. Had no fore knowledge about this album or the band, and immediately Lucky's rhythms hooked me. I totally get why he's called the godfather of hardcore drumming.
One loud short punk rock mosh pit
I don’t really like listening to this kind of punk but I appreciate it for what it is and like some of the lyrics, especially the political ones.
kinda funny, short and sweet
Its alright. Sounds good and a decent headbanger but a bit samey.
Songs too short and raw, if there was a remastered version my score could a been boosted
Brief but good fun
Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad. I'm not a ffun of punk, or hardcore punk, or even those very short songs, but this album had some interesting bits and was quite entertaining. I guess a big thing is that it was only 15 minutes, so my mental health didn't get too much of a hit. Pretty good for punk, average for an album in general.
A big complaint I've had on this list is that albums are too long. This is the first album that I've listened to that I warrant the opposite complaint and maybe they could have added a little bit more. Not a whole lot more but at a brisk 15 minutes it does feel a little undercooked. I guess that's punk though so who am I to judge? Still compared to the overly long albums, a short 15 minute one is beautiful. 2.5/5
Surprisingly fun throwaway album. Can’t tell what is really being said. The songs are so short that the whole thing feels like nothing. Probably the point. Lots of anger? I caught criticism of the Vietnam war in Paid Vacation, that’s about it. Standouts: Behind the Door, Paid Vacation, and Live Fast Die Young.
3 an enjoyable 15 minutes
Yes! This is the way all (well, most) punk albums should be. 1 minute songs, bang, bang, bang and done. FIN.
Enjoyed that way more than any circle jerks I've been part of!
I like the concept of short/ sweet songs. Get to the point. Point. DONE. Well-played.
Definitely influenced a lot of my favourite bands, but a bit earlier than my preferred punk.
Artists from other genres should take a page from Circle Jerks. In 15 minutes they create an album that sounds fully-realized, with songs that feel complete. I still can't say I enjoyed the music as it's far too noisy and abrasive for me, but this is kind of a must-listen just to see that good, short albums CAN be done. Like they say, why say many words when few do trick? Standout song is Operation.
Gotta give it to them, 14 songs in 15 minutes is efficient... And it definitely does not overstay its welcome. Musically, I just do not like punk, it is to boring to me, fast, but monotonous... So it would have been 2 stars. but one extra star for not wasting my time.
Circle Jerks made hard-core punk - short songs with aggressive guitar, and simple, angry lyrics. The drums are as aggressive, and may be the most skilled element of the band's music. This is a great example of hard-core punk, and as clear of a example of how hard-core punk isn't particularly great music.
15 minutes of frenetic chaos. My kind of album.
nettee 1980er punk
Actually enjoyed this more than I expected when it started. Fun and vulgar, funny in places. Full of fury, and mainly, signifying nothing.
14 songs in 15 minutes is such a punk album thing, it gave me a retro chuckle.
An absolute breeze of an album with 14 tracks just under 16 minutes. Not my cup of tea but can't complain too much while learning about the history of punk uprising.
Ok sound. Not much to redeem from the message
I actually came into this prepared to hate it but was surprised. I managed to finish it and was pleased. Kudos to the brevity of it.
Enjoyed
Short! Good stuff.
Short and sweet. Very punk. Not much else to say really. It was good. I enjoyed it
At least this is punk. Refreshing.
I gotta admit this was entertaining, high energy with blood pressure raising music accompanied by hilarious lyrics with occasional hooks. But there’s only so many stars a 15 min 3 chord punk record should be allowed
Straight punk. It’s actually an excitable music. I wouldn’t listen to this at this point in my life, but it’s so short, I listened twice to make sure I heard it well enough!
When there's more tracks than minutes, you know you've got a punk album (or it's GBV).
Classic hardcore album. First time listening to them but easy to see how important this was in the evolution of punk.
Loud, dumb, fast, and fun. I liked it. At 15 min, didn’t overstay its welcome.
Would have really enjoyed this in my teens
I liked it. This album is only 15 mins long. Which was nice.
Like a eating Dorito's after a night out drinking. It feels good and I like it but it's not really a meal. I love trashy gross hard-core punk and appreciate what they made here, but even I need more substance than this.
Ok
Classic punk and definitely influenced Blink-182
fast paced, in your face punk. listened while I worked out & was easy to keep the pace up. songs are short-not much in the way of more than a refrain/chorus, maybe a hook, but appreciate they can play instruments. not really my style, but not bad
Pretty good
Certifiable punk music.
Solid classic punk album, but nothing special compared to others of it's era. 3/5
LA hardcore punk at its most essential. This whole album ran for maybe 15 minutes with none of the songs lasting more than 1:30. These guys play their instruments hard and fast and do manage to incorporate some hooks into the basic melodies (though you have to pay attention or they're over). Snarling, angry lyrics about dissatisfaction with modern life and the hypocrisy of society. It's pretty unvarnished and you have to like the genre to enjoy this -- it's definitely not for everybody. I do like punk but this is a little too much thrashing even for me.
Thought the length of this one was unique. I was able to listen to it 5 times in one sitting. Musically some of the songs were funny too which was nice
A solid punk album, good energy throughout
Any album that is 15 min deserves my respect.
I was torn between rating this a 2 or a 3. I did like some of the songs, and it was a quick and easy album to listen to. So 3 it is, even though I probably won’t listen to it again.
Well that was a bit of fun! Wouldn't listen to it all the time, but did enjoy it :)
Pretty good example of early punk. Surprised I never heard of these guys back in the day.
Да кто такой груп секс и почему группа названа в честь сабреддита по Radiohead 6/10
Not my usual brew but it’s hard to be mad at any album that only takes up 15 minutes of my time. Plus it’s fun, not completely unmusical and apparently influential. And did I mention how pleasingly short it is??
You cant have a 15 minute album man ahahahha perfectly good in any case
Fun BRIEF album. 14 songs in 16 minutes? LOL ... why does punk get this rep? This album
One of those tough ones where I have to decide whether I rate it on how I felt about it when I was 17 vs how I feel about it now. At 17 I thought it was fun, edgy, and cool. It was one of the first full-on punk albums I listened to regularly. Nowadays I feel like I've outgrown a lot of it, but I do get nostalgic for that sound, those short-but-bluntly-to-the-point songs, and the irreverence of it all. I'll go middle and say 3.
Well. That was brief.
It was competent but not very memorable to me. I certainly won’t forget the name of the group/album though sheesh
Very short album, like a few songs. Good punk rock vibe Top tracks: Operation
Good sound. Loved the punk sound. Could have benefited from more time because the songs were great but it felt like they never truly got going to their full potential. Not sure if it was a gimmicky album, but I did enjoy it for what it was. 3.5/5.
58/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Short, simple, fast and funny in a juvenile way. In short, punk.
Pretty fun, fast hardcore punk. I hadn't heard it before, but liked it.
Not my vibe but very short and digestible and entertaining
Punk
What a wild concept for an album. Like a speedrun for punk. Absolutely mad and for that, a little respect comes its way
Punk
Incredibly short.Nothing else to really say.None of the songs lasted long enough to make an impression.so I guess it was fine?
Definitely riffing on a theme.
I think any punk record is gonna get an automatic 2 stars out of me. And this one has Live Fast Die Young on it, so I'll give it three stars for that. I almost want to give it four stars because it's so short, but if I gave it four stars that would make it seem like I'm going to listen to this one a lot, which I don't think I will. It has every pleasing quality of a lofi punk record except for enough raggedly catchy shout-em-ups. So it'll stay at 3.
Favorite song was the last one. Those drum fills on “Red Tape” are tight!! Other than that, my main takeaway here is that I’m sure this was fun live but it’s not a record I’m just gonna listen to casually on repeat. Still, glad to check Circle Jerks off my punk rock bingo card. Short songs, good energy, and occasionally something to say.
Brief but fair
This us a 16 min 14 song album. Fascinating. Good energy, fun album, not really sure if I'm going to come back to it though. Sentimate is there but the song writing leaves something to be desired. 3.5ish Repeats:back against the wall, behind the door, world up my ass, live fast die young. Skips:
Full disclosure, about 20 years ago, I spent a lot of time hanging around hardcore punk kids. I could kind of see the appeal at first, but I pretty quickly started to feel like there were several dozen cookie-cutter knock off bands all doing the same thing. Simple songs, played as loud, fast and angsty as possible. For me, this got boring very fast. How much of that same thing can you really listen to? How edgy can your music be if it's following the same formula for decades? Credit where credit is due, this is obviously a defining album of the genre. And the fact that it's been copied so often clearly means that set a certain standard for others to follow. At less than 16 minutes long, this is likely going to be the shortest album of the entire challenge. But that was about all the time I needed.
They get an extra star for being only 15 minutes but not my style
This isn't as bad a s some reviews here would lead one to believe. Sure the lyrics are juvenile but the punk rock here is tremendous.
Well that was an exciting 15 minutes.
Minor Threat, Black Flag and Bad Brains must be included in such a list as stellar representatives of early hardcore. Can Circle Jerks be added, aside of their similar status? I could say yes, because they were very good as well. But I could say no because 15 minutes is the length of an EP and not the one of an L.P. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, translatingto a 8/10 grade for more general pusposes (5 + 3) Albums left to review: more than 400, I've temporarily lost count here. Will I include this one in my own list? Maybe.
Back to back hardcore punk albums with Minor Threat yesterday. This album is also very good, impressive something so raw fast and short manages to hold together so well. Deserves to be on the list.l 15 mins is probably the ideal length of such an intense album.
AJ: fast & loud. Lotta songs, little time.
An album that's extremely tight and in your face -- for better or for worse. Lyrically there isn't much nuance to pull from each track, and the politics behind them have aged into a mixed bag. On one hand you get apocalyptic anti-Afghan War sentiments (Paid Vacation), but on the other hand you get oddly right-leaning rants about taxes being the source of all your problems (Red Tape). Fav Tracks: Beverly Hills, Operation, Back Against the Wall, World up My Ass, Paid Vacation, What's Your Problem Least Fav Track: Red Tape 6/10
Real edgelord vibes and it's hard to credit that people in their mid-20s could write lines like 'All the people look the same / Don't they know they're so damn lame', but there are decent tunes at least, and I respect the brevity.
What a wild listen - hardcore punk through and through, and I believe the shortest album I've listened to thus far. Truly chaotic and just what I needed for a Friday arvo! Best: Live Fast Die Young Worst: Operation
Wow this is short, just over 15 mins
its giving parokya ni edgar
Short album very yelly didn’t hate it
Nice and short
It sure is short!
A very traditional and true-to-form hardcore punk record. With degenerate lyrics, short straight-to-the-point song structures, minimalist riffs, bass lines, and beats, lo-fi production, and a vocalist whose loud, angry, and simultaneously doesn't give a shit, it's exactly what you could expect, and all in just 15 minutes. For what it aims to achieve, it doesn't do anything wrong. I personally do not find it as enjoyable or memorable as Blag Flag, Dead Kennedies, or Minor Threat, which have much more innovation, complex melodies, and outgoing vocal performances, and that's for the low score. But who gives a shit about scores anyway? They don't. I'll be in the mood to play this if I'm pissed or want to show someone hardcore.
Highlights: "Back Against the Wall," "Paid Vacation," "Wasted," "Live Fast Die Young" Narrowly coming in before Black Flag's Damaged; it's hard to imagine heavy metal of the '80s either without the flexible tempo rush of song climaxes throughout this album, and punk political messages have never fallen far beyond what this lays out. A highlight of an obviously highly influential scene.
it didn't really stand out -I 've heard better punk music - but it wasn't bad either.
Short. Ugly. Attitude
"World Up My Ass" is one of the great song titles and this album gets 1* just for that. However, I am struggling to give more than 3 when they could only be arsed to produce 15 minutes of music.
If I’m in an old school punk/hardcore kind of mood this is the vibe. Nothing stoods out to me as a killer track.
Never heard of this, but it was an interesting one! I'm much more into the bands that emerged later in this scene (Blag Flag, Minor Threat, and especially Fugazi). But this was a quick one so I had time to listen to it twice, glad I did.
Can I really form a strong opinion on an album so short. Think I'll remember this album but never listen too again
This is exactly how an album if this style should be done. 14 1 min songs. It's like drinking a sour beer. I enjoy a sample, but 16oz is too much, man.
There are some catchy tunes on this one, but it didn't really work for me. I guess if I'd heard it back in 1980 it would have been a favourite, though!
Its fun and silly while still being distinctly punk. Reminds me a lot of the TV album from Less Than Jake but a bit more raunchy. Nothing particularly gripping but a fun listen regardless
Un bon album puk . 3.85
Energetic quickie from the Circle Jerks. I love group sex.
I am not a fan of this hardcore punk music, but I have to say, I didn't hate this album as much as I should have. The songs are really short, which works well for the message (or lack thereof) that is in each song. If you want to know how hardcore punk really started, then this is an excellent start. I should find this abrasive, and while I probably won't listen to this album often, I would listen to their other music. It's shocking in the simplicity and energy.
Cool cool cool
Lajinsa parhaimmistoa, viihdyttää. Jotenkin iloinen.
Good punk album and a classic, but not one of my favourites. Since many of the tracks so damn short there's no time for musical buildup, compared to Crass or Subhumans this makes the music less enjoyable. Still good fun though! Highlights: Beverly Hills, Operation, Live Fast Die Young, Group Sex
I find myself saying this a lot on here but I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. For hardcore punk there's a lot more signal to noise ratio than usual. These are actual songs. You could sing along to them. The words aren't quite as puerile as other bands. It's also over in just over 15 mins!
Punk
Sopivan melodista ja silti tykittävää punkkia.
My general feeling about this kind of hard core thrashy punk is that it gets old for me pretty quickly. But of course that's the trick here: at around 15 minutes overall, no song even 2 minutes in length, there's really no time for it to wear out its welcome.
Like listening to the first Clash album on 2x speed. This was very enjoyable (and I appreciate that the runtime is short). This album has a higher level of songwriting than a lot of the hardcore albums that have been on this list so far. And there's a number of political songs that elevate the music too. Strong album!
I haven't listened to this band too much but some of my old punk friends really respected them and I can tell why. They have a good sound and important to me the vocals are solid. No bullshit fake saturation to the vocals and nothing overdone. It has a real sound, the way that punk should be. Instrumentation is solid as well. I liked the album. Not a ton of standout tracks and that's pretty typical for this genre for me.
Not the most interesting punk album I've heard, but I guess it fulfills the promise of what a hardcore punk record should be.
Angry and rebellious 80s shorties. Cool!
Great punk band.
Punk directo, rápido y sin contemplaciones. Poco melódico. Guitarrero e impulsivo. Le falta algo de carisma, fuerza tiene.
For a Punk album I thought it was pretty tight. Can't knock the 15 minute run time. Suits the style and a few songs stuck in my head. 'I Just Want Some Skank' has had repeat listens
3.6 - 16 minutes of pure, raucous punk rock. A nice palate cleanser from “Odessa.”
The shortest album on the list? This has to be part of a foundation. Very cool.
Third listen. 2.5 last time. It is short and simple. Not bad for the genre. The song Afghanistan seemed years ahead of its time. 3.5/5
The sort of thing I loved as an angst-ridden teen. And I didn't mind hearing this again - Paid Vacation in particular took me back to that time of homemade punk mixtapes and watching Repo Man. This didn't really grab me in the same way so far after the fact, but the songs were at least short, if not sweet, and at 23 minutes, this was an enjoyable nostalgic romp.
PUNK
This album’s brevity is it’s strong point. I don’t necessarily mean that as an insult - I think it encapsulates the essence of hardcore punk. It wouldn’t make sense for this to be 40 minutes. Music wise this was fine, though I’d rather be listening to some early replacements.
14 songs - none over two minutes - now that's hardcore. Hardcore as a genre is worthy of inclusion here, but probably only one slot in my book. I would go Black Flag and Fear. Circle Jerks debut is not subtle, but it is a way above average example of a genre I don't circle (pun intended) back to often but do appreciate under the right circumstances.
Speed punk that sounds like the precursor to later raunchy punk
Se oli nopea töräytys. Perus hc punkkia, mutta tää maistu pikkusen paremmin. Rumpali on kyllä hullu :D
Interesting 15 minute punk rock foray.
It is punk, and I don't think I'll get bored of punk
It’s got many small bursts of punk energy. I liked it more than I thought I would.
Clearly an influential album - wasn't my favorite but I can see the merit. At least it was only 15 minutes!
Growing up a punk rock skate kid the Circle Jerks were always in Thrasher and other zines. They were seemingly required listening. Someone always had this record at hand. This record is especially great for its time and is significant to me by virtue of having the music attached to good memories. Listening many years later I find it sometimes lacks power compared to music made by the kids it inspired. It also suffers from an unfortunate trick that time plays on us all where pioneers of a formula can over time sound more formulaic than they did when they first made their statement. Don't get me wrong, it's still good. But even Keith Morris himself in OFF! is more consistently punchier than what is present here.
What am I supposed to do with minute-long songs?
Trying to enjoy this is like trying to enjoy sand slipping through your fingers. It's here and gone so fast. That said, there was something fun about the unique experience of listening to this. I wouldn't listen to it again as I'm not really into punk, but it was punchy.
Prima Punk, maar niks aparts 15 min album lol
Cool album. Incredibly short, so it’s hard to get into the songs.
Some great guitar playing here and surprisingly well constructed songs
I listened to today's album today at work when I was starting to lose energy and it definitely helped pick me back up a little. This wasn't the greatest punk album I've ever heard but I enjoyed it, 3/5.
If your punk album isn't 14 songs and 15 minutes long, are you even trying?! I don't remember having much of a rebellious punk phase, so have never really listened to Circle Jerks, but can definitely hear their influence in the punk bands I did listen to growing up. The guitarist was also in Black Flag and formed SST Records, that's pretty cool. I'm finding the longer songs to be the highlights, "Operation", "Back Against The Wall", "World Up My Ass", "Live Fast Die Young" and "Red Tape" are great. Decent listen. 3 / 5 stars.
A little zest on the familiar California hardcore sound is most welcome. The playing's a little varied across the packed songs, but that's not really what we're here for. Group Sex succeeds in making me want to kick something; The more serious subjects of the band's war ring true forty years on.
Didn't like it that much, it is too pure punk for me.
1980. Live Fast Die Young, Deny Everything
First listen
100% I gave this album an extra star for how blessedly short it was.
Not my favorite hardcore band. But it's short and sweet.
They sure know how to be economical with their songs, eh? 14 in about 15 minutes...they don't come much faster than that. Fast and angry is about all these songs are giving me, though. Not much depth here, but hey baby, that's punk.
Heikompaa kuin vaikka se Black Flag, mutta toisaalta genrelle täydellinen levyn pituus, joten olkoon sama 3/5.
6/10 it made me laugh and was 15 minutes long, how bad can that be.
5/10. Probably my favorite hardcore punk album I've heard so far. Because it understands that you can say everything a punk album has to say in 15 minutes, and 15 minutes is about the right amount of time for me to get over how jarring it sounds, start to kinda like it, and then end right as I'm getting tired of it again.
I wasn't expecting much, given the name of both the band and the record, but this was fun. 15 minutes of hardcore punk, the right length for me and all enjoyable. God knows what the best song is, they are all so short.
"I just want some skank!" Hell yeah, who can say no to that? "I don't want to live 'til I'm 34, I don't want to die in a nuclear war..." True-dat! "I've got the world up my ass!..." umm yeah, sad story. "Beverly Hills, Century City, all the people look the same, don't they know they're so damn lame...?" - I couldn't agree more. At nearly 50, I'm definitely not the target audience for this. But there's some great unfocused anarchist energy on this. Love the song lengths and that I could hear the lyrics. But I think it falls short of being substantial or consequential. Would've loved to be at one of these shows tho.
After the 2:52 "69 Love Songs" and the 2:01 "Emergency on Planet Earth," Circle Jerks knocking out 14 song in 15 minutes was actually refreshing. With the breakneck speed at which they hit each of these half-developed song ideas, there is no time to even catch your breath, let alone wonder how much longer a song goes on past it's welcome or how many tracks there are left. So "Group Sex" benefits a bit from the context in which it was listened to. I mean, group sex is probably always going to depend on context.
circle jerks - group sex (1980) notes - punk band from la - 14 songs, 15 minutes - vocals and guitar are really intense and passionate - drums are the weak link - lyrics about corporate greed, LA fame culture, general punk activities fav - operation - high energy and catchy - great vocal performance least fav - back against the wall - the broken glass sample is super distracting 3.5/5
Not usually my preferred style of music but I appreciated a lot of this album, catchy riffs and lyrics, high energy. I liked Beverly Hills and World Up My Ass and a few other songs but probably won’t be revisiting this one much. The drumming on Paid Vacation is cool too.
I was expecting to hate this, but actually, it wasn't too bad. And at only 15 mins it didn't really grate much. A lot of - for want of a better word - spunk, and tellingly songs that are over somewhat prematurely. I couldn't really hear the lyrics in their entirety due to the frenetic pace
Clever lyrics interesting sound. Not all of it was necessarily good.
kind of a classic but the tunes just aren't that great
3.75
I'm trying not to hate on this being only 15 minutes long. I get it - it's a real punk rock thing to do. So - outside of the brevity - it's a solid, early-80s punk rock album. Exactly what I'd expect. I can definitely hear how this influenced later bands. Good on you, Circle Jerks.
The shortest album on the list, kind of like the Clash if their songs were only 60s long. The kind of album being always cited as incredibly influential rather than listened to and enjoyed. Bet they were great live.
Energy, but not so well defined, and some of the guitar solos were just a bit shit.
A 15-minute blast of hardcore punk that's frankly over too quickly. It's not exactly the most memorable album, but it's a fun little rush of adrenaline that does the job.
Short, fast, to the point, and done. I thought track 2 was I just want to skate. Kick, push, coast.
Great album to have on here when you’re trying to play catch-up, other than that some fine hardcore
Fast, articulate hardcore
Punk barulhento.
Everything about the album cover lets you know what you are going to be in for. Man this music takes me back. I don't want to be a teenager again but having that energy would be nice sometimes. Stars for: fast, energetic, loud. (A little less fun is how well Paid Vacation still works 40 years later)
Goes hard
shortest album so far
thats one for the search history. zuckerbot is gonna be pushing me all sorts of funky adverts now it knows i searched for this. blink and you've missed it. to be fair that was about as much of it as was needed and that deserves some credit.
God the album title and band name combo is eye-roll inducing. But, pleasantly surprised. 15 minutes album... yep it is punk alright. I go back and forth between liking it and not... it feels like it's missing a bit of heart to it for me, it might be just because bands like Dropkick Murpheys and other skank-inducing groups basically co-opted this sound and it ends up being trite and kinda bro-y.
I did not know this album in advance. It is not in the same league as perhaps better known albums from Black Flag, Minor Threat, Ramones etc. ..some of the songs consist of just a few shouts, but there are some great songs on it too (Beverly Hills, Live Fast Die Young) so it is OK; something I would listen to again.
doorsnee punk album
Old school punk's not really my bag, but this was an OK listen - didn't find it grating or anything. Fave track - "Don't Care", I reckon...
very classic punk, not my jam but its alright
Generally a weird punk album
Not a huge fan of hardcore punk, but I thought this one was fine. On the lower side of 3 though, still don't think ill come back to it
Three chords and the truth. Punk rock at its essence. 3.5/5
I mean, what is there to say. Its 15 minutes long with just as many tracks. It's hardcore punk from 1980. Influential, but I doubt many people are going to listen to this for its modern originality.
Brash fast angry punk rock. Music that can only justifiably be made by teens and twenty-somethings. It takes a special kind of athleticism to be able to execute this music and stay in sync with the band. Didn't particularly like this album, but it didn't rape my ear holes like some of the albums on this list (Mekons, Lexicon of Love, Wild Beasts). 3/5
I remember listening to them back in the mid/late 80's during a relatively brief period of time during which I was interested in punk and similar styles. The genre was so different from what I had been listening to, and to a sheltered suburbanite in his late teens, it sounded dangerous and exciting. Totally get the "rebelliousness" cliche I was part of. (I don't feel bad about it at all; just part of the growing up process. Still doing it in my mid-50s. Life. It goes on.) Listening to punk music for me these days usually leaves me mostly uninterested, so I was curious to see my reaction to this one. I expected to shrug my shoulders at it as part of a fading broader memory, and I was suprised to find myself appreciating what they were doing. Really great playing by the musicians, the singing and lyrics are catchy and fun, and it isn't to my ears as cacophonous as a lot of the genre is to me (it's okay, kids, go ahead and make fun of my middle-aged sensibilities ;-). Overall, really solid album.
While I think other bands did it better there's no denying its a fun listen.
its okay
Buen punk
15 songs in 15 minutes? Sign me up!
I enjoy old-school socal hardcore punk. nothing nuanced about it. just a blast of energy. sadly there's nothing that's amazing about this, just solid attitude.
I expected to hate this but I kinda liked it. Short and to the point. 3 stars.
Fantastic that they fit a whole album into 15 minutes. of all the hardcore punk I've seen this is some of the more enjoyable.
19 songs, 23 minutes. Can't really go to wrong with that. Plus old punk friend danny approves.
Very punk I don’t mind it though. Well that was ridiculously short lol
14 songs in 15 minutes. The ass song was good
Punk rock, hardcore, gotta be in the mood. Plays fast and is short.
2.5
You can hear why this was so influential, but you only need to hear it once!
Not a single track over 2 minutes is worrisome. Fave track: Live Fast Die Young
At least its short
This album is just under 16 minutes long. It didn't feel like that, it felt much more like an hour. Its what I would now say is classic hardcore punk. The fact that this group made that sound a big thing in the first place definitely gives it a place on this list. It was an ok album to listen through but its not really music I like listening to or would come back to.
649/1001 2026.07.02
Sloppy playing, inconsistent sound. The moments where they play double time and really kick up the energy are great, but they are relatively few and far between.
Is this the shortest album on the list? Does this even count as an album? I can't complain about the length though - didn't want to listen to a longer version.
Its ok, but when I think it is getting repetitive multiple times in its only 15 minutes that's a problem
I respect to put out a 15 minute record. Channeling all the energy. Still not my thing.
The noise my banjo string made when I was first angry wanking. Survived once im cool thx
6 tracks in. I think I get the idea. Noisy.
A 15 minute album, all seems not very serious at all. Mostly all the same style of song, shouting into the mic. Perhaps rolled out from the industry at the time if punk rock is on top, but this just seems very lazy and repetitive
"Angry twelve year old" punk. Bonus point for ending before I got too annoyed by it.
Well, that's fucking annoying. I thought I had the Rate box open for Circle Jerks, which I was rating a 2...and it turns out I had accidentally opened the rate box for Bob Dylan's Highway 61...so now it looks like I rated Bob a 2, when I wanted to rate that album at least a FOUR. Fuck.
The timing is perfect ... I don't think I could last another second.
looking at the title i could already guess exactly what this album was going to sound like. why are there so many shitty punk albums in here i'll never know. also why is every song 1 minute long, but feels like it takes ten years to finish? longest 15 minutes of my life.
VERY short, pretty mediocre punk, just doesn’t compare to other major players in the scene
I did not care for this.
Album #96: Group Sex - Circle Jerks Genre (W): Hardcore punk No singles. I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: These songs are so short! However, I love the concise structure of them. They sound like regular songs despite them being so short. I also like the songwriting in select songs, like “Operation”. Favorite songs: Deny Everything, Operation, Behind the Door, I Don’t Care
I liked that it was 15 mins long but that’s about all that I liked
I accidentally listened to this 1.5X through and I hated it 2
You know, I thought this album was going to be terrible. But in reality, it was so short that there wasn’t time for me to truly grow a deep seated hatred for it. Sometimes you gotta look on the bright side of life.
Not a punk fan.. glad it was only 15 minutes long :)
It's a short album from a particular time that has deep nostalgia for particular people. It's not for me right now. Protest albums and teen angst have always been a thing and will always continue to be a thing. For me, "Take the Power Back" by RATM accomplishes it better.
I didn't enjoy this music all that much, but there's something to be said for an album that's only 15 minutes long, with super-short tracks, too. If this was longer I'd have disliked it a lot more.
Not even sure what to say about this. I'm sure it's great if you're in the scene or whatever, at the time. But from an outsider's perspective, just sitting at home listening to music on headphones, with my cat and my knitting needles; it's just not appealing.
I have committed to writing something (anything) about every album. But as I am inching closer to 650, it's getting to a point when I'm running out of ideas for what to write for albums that didn't really do much to me. It's a fine punk album. I don't think they pioneered the short song idea in hard-core music, so I'm not sure how influential they were. Well, at least it doesn't overstay its welcome!
4/10
Trash, definitely not something I would choose to listen to. I guess I am going to sound old but it all sounded to same.
This is a very angry band. I don’t know how this album made the top 1001albums!!!
Like mountain dew, a big jolt of energy that's not for me.
pretty good and raw. Honest album. I like this type of music but it is also somewhat infantile.
This hyped me up for a third round job interview so there’s that. I guess sometimes you just need a good Circle Jerk…
Really struggling to listen to this even though it’s only a 15 minute album. Lots of yelling and frenetic music. Not what I’m wanting to listen to this morning, but I can somewhat appreciate it for the punk rock it is. (2)
Gut, dass die Songs so kurz sind. Schlecht, dass es davon so viele gibt.
It's fun, but it's also just too damn short. I get that it's punk, but sometimes you can be just a tiny bit too punk.
A painful compilation of punk that mercifully only lasted 15 minutes. In return, I'll mercifully give it a 2.
I’m sorry does that say 15 MINUTES total??? This is not a genre I like but honestly the bite sized tracks make this one a lot more palatable. There’s just enough variety where it feels like a full album instead of one long 15 minute song, which is the issue I have with Punk at times (the Ramones album made me think I just listened to blitzkrieg bop 10 times in a row). I will always dislike vocals like that though, just really gets on my nerves when they don’t even try to sing and intentionally obfuscate their vocals so the lyrics are hard to understand. I know I was praising the variety a little bit, but other than a couple of cool instrumental breaks it sounds like every song has the same tempo, key, and theming. I probably won’t listen to this one again, but if you asked me whether I’d listen to this entire album or just the last song on the Velvet Underground classic White Light/White Heat, it’s not even a contest. The album being so fast paced 100% bumps it up a full point, and can very easily imagine this being a 1 if it was like 10 mins longer
Three thoughts... 1st, this shit is such shit that only a music industry connection could have gotten them recording time. Rich parents, connected uncle, dunno. Second, just how long would their Greatest Hits album be? 4 minutes? And three, AGAIN, what albums were left off this list for THIS to be on there? Not the worst I've ever heard (I'm looking at YOU, Nick Cave) but not good. At least it was quick.
It’s terrible. But it gets a 2 as it only wasted 15 minutes of my life
Plusy: ta płyta ma tylko kwadrans. Minusy: wszystko inne. Przeciętny punk z wyjątkowo durnymi tekstami. 4/10
3/10
IK HOU NIET VAN AMERIKAANSE PUNK!!!!! oke ja is punk enzo en misschien ook wel een belangrijk album, maar ugh na vier liedjes heb ik het wel gezien.
Don’t care is a jam!!
Short, shsrp shocks of punk in its purest form. Unfortunately it just misses more than it hots for me, which i think is a result of the vocals and some of the lyrical content. Not horrendous but far better punk records out there.
I’ve never knowingly heard a song about having a vasectomy before, so that was… something. I think I should’ve hated this. I did not.
Meh. Bra det var kort.
Trøkk, men ikke så spennende eller givende. Er liksom rock.
While I really like some of the punk stuff from the 70s and 80s, I'm not super into hardcore punk. It all sounds a little the same to me and it's just a bit too much for me to ever listen to an entire album of it. I guess the positive thing about this album is that it is only 15 minutes long in total, so if you want just a taste of hardcore punk, this is a good album to pick. Again, I think a lot of the songs just sort of sound similar and blend right into each other. Nothing bad and nothing good and it was a quick listen. I think it took me longer to read about the album and type up this post than it did for me to listen to it!
I would say that only the most generous definition of "album" could allow for the inclusion of this abbreviated selection of barely written musical sketches. These guys rocked hard, but so did a lot of punk groups. The only thing that keeps this from being rated a 1 is its brevity. At about 15 minutes total run time, it didn't last long enough to truly get on my nerves.
This whole album is only 15 minutes long, which is about the best thing about it! American hardcore punk, I probably would have liked it when I was 14, but left that world behind almost 50 years ago
????
Punk is my hardest genre to get behind. They are good. Just not for me
Hardcore punk is really not my vibe, but it wasn't too bad. I appreciate how short the songs and the album are
Well it was a quick listen, I’ll give them that. There’s a joke in there somewhere.
I like punk but this was kind of brainless
Not a huge fan
Circle Jerks... Not my cup of tea... Wasn't horrible but I got through it.
I want to give one star but I will add one more just because the entire album wasted only 15min of my life. I think I spent more time on Spotify adds than listening to the songs of this album.
No private session used for Spotify. I listened to this album twice, but at a runtime of 15 minutes and 51 seconds that isn't much of a brag. I like punk music more when it is rebelling against something besides your parents who probably did their best.
I like punk and see their influence but not my favorite
I can see the appeal but not a personal fan
I'm thankful this was only 15 minutes. It was fine - not my style. Favorite songs: Back Against the Wall World up My Ass
I'm Being Framed, It's All A Setup 1001 Albums Generator 259 (3/31/2026) In spite of its blistering, unwavering energy, there's something about Circle Jerks' Group Sex that is surprisingly, dare I say, amateur? Which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but I think that it makes the whole "punk" aesthetic of this thing fall a bit flat. It's not the music itself that I would say is amateur, at least not anymore so than other barebones hardcore punk, but rather the lyrics. It's also hard for any song that's under a minute to really stick out, but some of the "longer" songs here are pretty cool. With that said, the short length really helps this thing. It's just 15 minutes of getting punched in the face and dick, which isn't what I'm into personally, but it works for some people. 2.5/5 for the pure energy and for not overstaying its welcome, rounded down to 2. Favs: Deny Everything Back Against The Wall Live Fast Die Young Least Fav: World Up My Ass
Well... it certainly was short
Too punk for me
Uuuuaaah
Concept album or something ? 15 minute album length is crazy. Loud sounds, bad message, you already know its punk. Teen me woulda turned it up
I'm glad that "Group Sex" is only 15 minutes long. (The shortest album on the list) Who knows what would happen if it were a standard album length? Some of the songs on "Group Sex" are actually kinda good and not a complete joke. I like the riffs at the beginning and end of "Paid Vacation". Still, I'll stick to hardcore punk bands that I actually like. 2 stars for "Group Sex".
Maybe I don't like punk?
Good but very angry. If I listened to lyrics I might like it more but I’m more of a beat person. It’s a bad sign when the next song pops up once the album is over and you like it more than this album…
Hey at least I listened to all 15 minutes
I kinda thought it was annoying, all the songs were just kinda noisy. I do appreciate that it was a short album
All hardcore punk sounds like this
Punk isnt really my thing, but it definitely keeps it short and sweet and dynamic. This is just a personal rating but probably deserves more love in general than I’m giving it
I don’t know if I’m not in the mood, of if I really don’t like this. It’s doing nothing for me
