Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Well, at least it was short.
don't like. blissfully only 15 min
It's ok. For somebody like me me who knows little to nothing about punk music, I didn't mind it. It was nice and short too.
What is going on? Favourite track: Live Fast Die Young
1/3. Blissfully short. I just don’t understand how anyone can enjoy this. Saved from a 1/5 but the singular musical moment I enjoyed in one of the songs.
This is exactly what I expected it would be from the name.
I feel like I coulda been in this band for like 2 weeks during university. I don’t hate all of it. I kinda like the scrappy madness. And my adhd enjoys the song lengths.
It was 15 minutes lmao not a lot to judge on
Early punk. Fleeting and angry. Okay, but not the dead milkmen... 2
Chaotic punk
A very fast paced, short hardcore punk album that didnt really grab my attention all that much, just sounded like the same little minute-long bashing and thrashing over and over.
Um, not really my thing but thankfully this was only about 15 mins long! Forgettable, punk but listenable. 2.5
Niks. Pluss: - Lengde - Group Sex
Standard punk, 100 km/t i et kvarter. Greit nok.
Wasn’t really in the mood for this one but I could understand the appeal
I get it... but I didn't enjoy it
Je-zus. 15 lange minuten. Muzikaal soms prima, soms herrie. Vocaal beetje schreeuwen. Teksten waren kort, review dus ook. Mwah.
Ig it could come in handy if I want an interlude for my own playlist
i mean its punk
not my vibe like at all, very ‘it’s not a phase mom’ type music
I appreciate it as an extreme in rawness and brevity. I don't mind the brevity, but it is a bit too raw for my tastes.
Annoying! I think this is their goal.
I am sure this was a signpost of an album for harcore punk and i dont know whether to thank them or curse them for the millions of same sounding bands that followed that signpost. Its not a terrible album and i think 17 year old me would have thought i was a real free thinker for listening to this but my hardcore punk tastes have evolved (or mellowed).
Quick easy listen but only 1 or 2 tracks clicked
Although Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris had left Black Flag before they released their debut album, I can definitely sense some similarities between Group Sex and Damaged – in fact, I’d say they’re more similar than they are different. The former is definitely a more fast-paced and juvenile take on hardcore punk, which could be a blessing or a curse depending on what type of listener you are. Personally, I’d say Group Sex is the weaker of the two albums. I like how quickly the album moves and there are some interesting pockets of technical skill I appreciated here & there, but I found most of the songs to be pretty annoying and there wasn’t as much shredding as I would have liked for this style. I suppose the album’s length (just over 15 minutes) is something of a double-edged sword, as the songs never linger long enough to get truly grating, but also don’t really have room to develop. On that note, this album only being 15 minutes long does raise a question of whether or not something this short should even be considered an album. I’ve come to understand the debate in terms of total length (rather than number or tracks), so Group Sex almost felt more like an EP than an LP to me in some ways. At the end of the day, I guess it’s completely subjective and is the artist’s decision, but man… I really think something marketed as an album ought to AT LEAST be hitting the 20 minute mark. Highlights: Operation, Back Against the Wall, World up My A**
Not quite my cup of tea, but credit for flying by at a ridiculous BPM without a single song reaching over 2 mins
Eh
This was certainly a experience to listen through lmao, I don't know what I was expecting going into this but it was still entertaining from start to finish Being by a band called "Circle Jerks", it's probably a given that this album doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. I find it funny that the longest song is 1:35, which is unique and I wish more albums did this as well
They wanted their 15 minutes of fame, and they got it. And we all feel shortchanged.
This sucked, but I'd rather have this than one 15-minute-long progressive rambling... on a double album full of them. Bonus star for brevity.
2,5
Varmaan taas aikaan peilaten kovaa settiä, mutta tällainen punk ei iske. 2/5.
Day 155 Nice to have an album I managed to listen to the entirety of whilst taking a dump. Highlights Beverley Hills Operation
This was an interesting listen but definitely not my music taste.
Typically noisy. Entertaining to listen to once. Sounds like all other 80s punk.
The best thing for me about this album is that the longest song is 1 min 35 seconds. I like some punk, but this is not it. No thank you.
Almost over before it even began - which was pretty cool because I’m not really into hard-core punk.
This was my first generated album for the new year, but I’m pretty glad I didn’t start off the year with it. Not completely offensive to the ears, but the lyrics are crude and plain immature. The best thing it has going for it is that it’s only 15 minutes long. Any more than that and I’d drop it down a score.
They accomplished a lot in 15 mins, I’ll give them that. Fast paced, rough and energetic.
Thank God it was only 16 minutes
Obsessed with the concept but it isn’t for me. But 14 ~1min songs??? Love
At least it’s only 15 minutes
Boring and typical punk. I think it may have inspired a lot of tropes which i am too young to appreciate.
Shortest album yet, one playthrough and done 15 minutes later so I can continue with my day!
At least it was short?
Overall Rating - 2.00/5 (4.00/10). It's punk, but not enough to it. Would like to see each of these songs fleshed out more. 14 tracks, ranging between 0:32 and 1:34.
punk. not for me.
This is punk. 🖕 Fuck the Government 🖕
I would have loved this when I was 17, but I’m not 17 anymore, so I found the no stop energy and shouting vocals quite tiresome. For an album with an average song runtime of just over a minute, I found myself frequently checking how much time was left in every song. Mercifully, the album was just 15 minutes, but I felt as though I felt every second of thise 15 minutes.
Imagine going to their show in 1980 and the whole thing is over in 16 minutes. Honestly… probably for the best. It’s a burst of chaotic punk energy that gets in, gets out, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and that might be its greatest strength.
14 songs in 15 minutes?
Yikes! Not for me. No way.
The canonical album of hard skater punk for when you need frantic noise. And short enough it was over before it got annoying.
A 16-minute album??? Love the energy, but the songs are too short for this to feel like a coherent album.
I think the drumming is great in this but mostly I feel like I'm listening in on a garage band of very angry teens.
15 minutes exactly how long it should’ve been
Screaming is not music
Early pubk
Hmm! I used to love this stuff but not any more.
Very dead kennedys, but sadly not them
Concepto atrevido pero no me llega a divertir.
p461. 1980. 2.5 stars. 3 years behind the curve. Shouty American punk, well done but dated even at the time.
I love a 15 min album. You can tell these shows were fucking crazy live. A little redundant to listen to in album form.
Seems like such a precious waste of vinyl space. I mean I am sure when this came out it was super edgy and something you would hand out to friends to check out. But today it just seems like ... was this a joke?
When a band called “Circle Jerks” releases an album called “Group Sex,” at least for me, it creates a very specific expectation that is by no means disappointed: punk rock of the most mangy variety! The four guys don't bother with (insert any musical stylistic device here), but always get straight to the point: The 14 songs last a full 15 minutes in total, although “Paid Vacation” even takes a few seconds for a kind of guitar solo. Actually, there's nothing really worth listening to on this album, but it's so wonderfully straightforward and funny that I can't give it just one star.
Lol This album reminds me of the battle of the bands scene in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World when the band they’re competing against introduces the song with a four count on the drumsticks, screams SOOO SAAADDD!! then says thank you because the song was literally only 3 second long. I give this album a higher score simply for being so ridiculously short, and at 16 minutes total, it was still a test in patience to get through it. If I had to suffer through a longer album of straight up thrash punk, I’d be having a much less sunshine filled day.
Very short !
Bonus point for being very short. Otherwise that felt pretty pointless, or is the shortness the point. I don’t think I particularly care. Next….
2 stars. Could have been 3 but 15 minutes/14 songs is a terrible ratio
Music is fun but this doesn't hit like it did when I was 13.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah punk dreck
Punk👍🏼
SHOUT! LOUD!!! FAST!!! LOUDER!! FASTER!! SHOUTIER!! FASTER!!!! LOUDER!!! SHOUT!
It's classic punk. It's loud. It's serious. It's silly. I'm glad it's short.
Punk is one of those genres I respect for its influence and the bomb it set off in rock music, but really don’t love very much. This record has 14 songs and is 15 minutes long. It’s punk AF. I could see being into this when I was 13. Now it’s just a historic curiosity. But after Napalm Death, it is positively pastoral
It’s like kinda awesome but it’s not really an album Would be a cool concert tho
Adopt old man pose: it's just too shouty
Good energy. I'm just not very into the singing.
Gotta respect they were at least self aware enough to realize they didn’t have anything good enough to keep our attention longer than 16 minutes.
interesting but boring
All I can say is, I'm just glad it was only 15 mins.
Due to both the band name, album name and runtime of this album I was expecting this to be the bottom contender on this list. But I was wrong! While this isn’t exactly the type of music I listen to, I didn’t find this as bad as expected. The songs were short, but quick to the point, which I appreciated. Some also had interesting compositions that I’ve almost never encountered before. I also felt like this was pretty pure punk in the sense that it really was quite a lot about mundane and garbage topics and complaints. It wasn’t especially smart or anything, which felt quite punky somehow. To just complain about things. Not the best record, but it also didn’t ask for much of your time. 100 times prefer this over the 69 love songs album, for example. Strong 2.
You gotta admire that they don’t give a fuck for being commercially viable - just the band name and album will tell you that. Furthermore, I often complain that albums are too long but here it’s only 15 min, which might be the shortest album on the list. You get unapologetic punk music. Not the greatest listen but I don’t think that was the point either. A real oddball of an album.
lol
Not for me
If snot could pick up a guitar and play music it would sound like this. With all it's bogey flicking energy it is pretty repetitive but i always get tickled pink for a bit of punk so there were bits i enjoyed even if all songs are pretty much under a minute and as basic as they come.
something to play while your waiting for KISS to come on stage at there concert.
Heureusement que c'était pas long
Ніколи не був фанатом цього гурту.
I really don't understand the charm people apparently see in this album. I'm not a big hardcore fan anyway, but in this album I can see anything that appeals to me. It starts of with a 31 second song. Congratulations. In total there are 14 songs in less than 16 minutes. Hardcore is like a stripped down variant of speed metal, without the guitar solo's (admitted, there's at least sort of one on this album), without the tempo changes, with screaming as vocals and without the funny lyrics about satan or rotting corpses. So it's basically speed metal without everything that makes it fun.
Songs were over before I could skip them
Mercifully short, which earns it an extra star.
I’ve never really listened to Circle Jerks before, and now I have. That’s about as much as I can say, to be honest. None of it really stood out for me. Dead Kennedys and Husker Du remain my go-to for this kind of racket. Group Sex? I’ll stay on my own, thanks.
Not really my cup of tea, it sounds a bit more like a SNL sketch of a hardcore band than anything. I appreciate how influential they are but they have never really done anything for me. Not a lot of stand outs but i did like World up my Ass. 2.2/5
Some sweet drums on here. Not a big fan of this brand of punk though, especially the vocals. I feel like the length was too short to even really consider this an album.
2.5
Not my thing, but at least it is short. 2 stars
2.5
More like Circle Berks. Crusty hardcore skater punk at the turn of the 80s and about 15 minutes long with most of it being filler. If this were any longer it would definitely be staring down the barrel of a 1 star rating.
Uhmmmm ok? 15 minutos? Nota: 2.0
Was not impressed
Here's a big positive: This album was only 15 minutes long. 5/10
With such a short album, comprising of incredibly short songs, it is somewhat hard to accurately judge this. On the one hand, the songs are hyper focused and the enrgy of the whole thing is kind of addicting, on the other hand, it doesn't really feel like there's any actual substance or bite to the music, which let's it down significantly.
This album was so short, and that gained it points it was lacking on every other way. I’m not into this style of punk, there’s certainly punk I do enjoy from this era but this album was not that, it’s mostly kinda boring and dumb and I was bored through most of its 16 minute run time. I’m gonna go listen to Wings now
I mean, it’s an album called Group Sex by a band called Circle Jerks. It’s dumb, loud, angry, and short. Based on the band and album names alone you should be able to tell if this is your kind of album.
Punk. 14 låtar på 15 minuter. Något långrandigt.
Punk garbage
An album with a title far more appealing than the music within.
Not really for me but i appreciate its influence
It was okay, very short.
Not my type of music, but it was short so that was nice and bumps it to 2 stars. 2/5
When none of the songs last long enough for me to even form an opinion, what do you expect me to say? Then again, this wasn't really my thing, so maybe the short length was a blessing? Tracks I kind of liked: behind the door, world up my ass Would I revisit this: no
eh.
14 songs in 15 minuten - kurze qual.
sellasta punkkia tällä kertaa. aika old school meininkiä.
Puh, das muss man schon mögen
meh. I like punk. Didn't particularly like this flavour of in/out shouty thrash punk. Question its inclusion on the list. Hope the Ramones on the list as they are far superior to this and alot more fun. Didn't hate it so its a 2.
Group Sex This is completely what it is meant to be; 14 short US punk songs lasting 15 minutes. All the tracks are perfectly serviceable for what they are, and there are some good little hooks and moments (the tempo change on I Just Want Some Skank, the solo on World Up My Ass, the surf tom toms on Don’t Care) across it, but the point is not to develop or craft ‘proper’ songs or anything out of the tracks, the point is entirely to write noisy, angry, short, sharp, earnest missives. It’s a tricky one to rate. Although it got better with repeat listens, it’s not musically or sonically all that interesting, despite some good moments, so it hovers around the 1s or 2s. But it doesn’t feel like they were interested in being musically or sonically interesting, so on their own terms it’s very successful, and I do quite admire that, especially as I get genuine sincerity and lack of pretension from it, which elevates it on the border of 2 and 3. So, on balance I’ll go a 2. That puts it on a par with The Dictators, which feels about right. A worthwhile listen, and I’m glad it came up, but I’ve got all I’ll ever get from it across the 3 listens I’ve had. 👫💦 Playlist submission: Back Against The Wall
I refuse to spend longer writing a review than they did making the album. It has more melody than The Germs. It has more humour than The Dictators. It has more charisma than both put together. It packs a lot in to fifteen minutes, and feels like a proper album despite its brevity. It has less sticking power than old pritstick.
I fucking hated this album, although I’m giving it an extra star for being only 15 minuets long!
3/10 Out of context, there is little going for this album. Mercifully short. Ridiculously short, in fact.
Bleh
2.5
Big fan of the album run time. The music itself was fine.
This is probably the shortest album I've ever listened to. It's punk as it should be—short, fast, hard, and loud. It's still not my cup of tea.
Nice try diddy
Random thoughts: * I'm not a punk guy, so I have no business reviewing something like this. * It was over fast. Crazy to have 14 songs in 15 minutes! * It wasn't as acoustically assaulting as I was prepared for. * I loved "Beverly Hills". Great track! * I like ending songs with just screaming the title. More groups should do this in other genres. It would be hilarious. * I'm more rounded as a music fan for listening to this one. I will never listen to this again likely unless it is for something academic like this.
Over quickly, frantic and shouty. Edit: Sorry, wrong app - that was my wife's review of my "performance" last night.
I’d 100% go to this show but as an album it was a tough listen. I’m also conflicted about the song length because on the one hand every song feels unfinished and on the other every song sounds so similar that they all blend together. Also I hope this band never needs to cross a river because they hate bridges.
A couple of " Fun " tracks, it's ok!
Not the best punk music
I heard about this band and I do love me some hardcore punk so let’s see what’s in the box. Well it’s hardcore punk alright. Fast, angry, frantic. Circle Jerks lean heavily on tempo changes to introduce this sense of anarchy. Sometimes we also get chaotic solos, and of course appropriate lyrics like “I’ve got the world up my ass”. Personally I prefer my hardcore punks with more melodic sensibility like The Descendants or Bad Religion, so this is two stars in my book.
Album a bit butters at times ngl. Faves: - Beverly Hills "so damn lame" one of the greatest insults ever - World Up My Ass - Paid Vacation
Now here's something I've barely heard of. 15 minutes! I might just listen to it on my way home My phone died so I couldn't listened to it on the way home and I think I might have been better off driving to it... This is musically really boring lol if you're making a 15 minute punk album you shouldn't be able to actually play your instruments. Like individually some of the songs are decent but like i don't wanna have to sit and read the lyrics to enjoy your shit. Also reading red tape are these guys tory punk. Blah.
Punk, best I can say is, It’s short?
What an insane idea for an album. 15 minutes of screaming, noise, and lyrics about, well, group sex. +1 star for creativity. +1 more star for having a song called World Up My Ass. 2/5 Key tracks: Deny Everything, World Up My Ass, Live Fast Die Young
Bit too bratty, trying too hard to be punk, no where as interesting or intelligent as the minor threat lp, heard recently. Not really much that would make me want to listen again, no longer a young teen trying to upset my parents or girls in my class, 2 Star
Punk... could've been worse
For years I had heard how influential and important the Circle Jerks were to punk music. Finally I get a chance to hear them and I am severely underwhelmed given how amazing Black Flag's DAMAGED ended up being. I'll admit the 15 minute album is a novelty that probably became the prime selling point. Can anyone even finish a real life circle jerk in under 15 minutes? These are the kinds of existential questions that this list raises.
Len Houmous once had group sex with a circle of jerks. He doesn’t like to talk about it but I’m pretty certain he didn’t do it a second time! 1.6
No thanks.
Mercifully short. It was of its era but has lost some of its lustre now.
Time and place This might be great at this point in life if I needed to power clean my house. But listening while driving home from my book club that takes place in an historic and magical sylvan forest, is neither the proper time nor place for group sex.
I used to be into punk when I was in high school for a spell but it's not something I would reach for off in these days. Very cool album though! And glad I have listened to it.
Not my thing, too chaotic and harsh.
Sonic raw dogging
I like the punk sensibility and the energy (and the 15 minute run time) but there isnt much that elevates this apart from maybe being the first if this sound
3/10 - It sounded like aggressive punk rock. Luckily it was short. Also the only lyrics in most of the songs were the titles.
Not great, it was music though
3/10. Dan convinced me it’s not a 1 or 2.
Well this a first. I didn’t think I’d ever criticise one of these albums for being too short. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad it didn’t go on any longer, but it’s so short because the band must know their music isn’t good enough to hold someone’s attention for longer. Self awareness is good and all, but why not try and maker better music instead of short and and music?
Not my vibe, and you know what? For once this is too short. Really not getting your moneys worth with this one. Simpsons: No
I don't know what I just listened to. It was better than expected but not good. However it was short so the noise was over quickly
Started off as if it was the middle of a song. Don't know if it was intentional, maybe it was to make the album feel even shorter Anyway, this is the ideal length for a music style that I don't really care for, so thumbs up happy face
thank god it was short. for this it deserves a 2 despite how shit it was
14 songs of American West Coast Hardcore Punk in 15 minutes is just about enough.
Blissfully short. 14 angry jaunts, thankfully lasting as long as a newbie on prom night
14 songs...15 minutes of pure energy and mayhem. No subtlety, no nuance and no let up. Not my thing but you have to admire the commitment. 2.5 stars
I know they’re classic and groundbreakers, but it just all sounds the same to me I’m sorry.
Funny lyrics. This music is the perfect real punk album. Raw and amateur sounding. But good music to get on a mosh pit. Unfortunately is not a style of music I enjoy that much.
What just happened
Epitome of punk, very fun just not my vibe
I think if I was 15 years old again I would love this. Punk is definitely not my thing
Well, the group sex phone number doesn’t carry the same staying power as “Jenny”, but I can appreciate the garage punk, straightforward simplicity of this angst. It reminds me of my days at Eisenbergs skate park in old Plano in the 90’s. Best review I read was something like “ This is what you put on when company is coming over and you have 15 minutes to clean the house”.
Brevity Rock. When it comes to group sex and circle jerks, you definitely want to get in and out in about 15 min, so well done.
Just not enough here to justify anything above 2 IMO. Ok maybe they were visionaries of hardcore punk but that alone doesn’t justify a strong rating. I do dig a 16 min album, but would have liked some songs that felt a bit more fleshed out. 2.25/5
Nada que ver con mi búsqueda de placer
At least it’s short
One of, if not the shortest albums I've ever come across. 15 minutes of punk chaos (not in a negative way). Although, I am relieved it was only 15 minutes.
Not really my scene but glad this exists.
Well, at least it was short.
This is really annoying, mostly unlistenable crash rock.
Best thing about this album is the length of it. 2 stars or D-.
Definitely didn’t expect to get a Circle Jerks album in here. That being said, just seeing the name and hearing the rants brought back a slight nostalgia, similar to when I drew the Butthole Surfers. And at bottom, both are better than Bjork and Kate Bush.
This is about what I expected from the "Circle Jerks" Bonus points for being short. Most punk albums should be this long.
Another generic punk album. I wish all albums like this were only 15 minutes
I remember my first car - I was always revving it, and zooming around, showing off to friend, family and random passers-by. In hindsight, it was a clunky and noisy pile of trash. Alas, nostalgia also gets a kick in the teeth from this album. I'm sure that some folk thought it punky and edgy, despite being years after the true punk era. Listening to it today... yikes. It has not aged well. The shortness of the songs almost hides the lack of ideas, but ... not quite.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
- I think I deffo like punk more in a live setting, it just feels a little lame sitting here listening to it.
Group Sex by Circle Jerks ist ein 15 minütiges Album und das beste daran ist der Alben- und Gruppenname. Alleine dafür hat es 3 Sterne verdient, bekommt es aber nicht, weil die 15min sehr mid sind.
Woke me up. Is that vomit on the floor?
Love how short this is. Also love the attitude. But u can’t get over how amateur the lyrics are. I get that punk music is more about the attitude but it was grating how bad the words are. 2.5/5
At last it’s only 15 minutes, buts it’s 15 minutes I’ll never get back.
I give this two stars because, tho I quite enjoyed the raucous nonsense, it was basically just one track. Not an album. So, two stars for one track is quite good. I imagine if I had ever gone to see them this would be a 5 star review. Or I would have died of exhaustion.
Interesting.
This album is wild. It's 15 minutes long! It's also not very good. Probably pretty groundbreaking at the time (1980) as it sounds like it could be from much later in the 80s or 90s, but I think that's really the only thing of note for this punk album. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
its 80s trash punk music that would play in the background of those reality tv talkshows that had way to much camera editing and bad haircuts, and probably coke. best part about this album is its only 15 minutes long
Decent but short
all the songs run together.
short high energy
Not a fan of this hardcode punk sound. Some interesting things here and it was really short! Only a 15 minute album on Spotify. I'm going with a 2.
I am not a hardcore punk fan at all. For people who gravitate toward this style, this is no doubt a 4 or 5 star album. For me? 2 stars. The only thing that really did anything for me was the sheer speed and inertia of it.
I feel like they need to pick a lane. Either be a punk band, or be a rap band. Don't be both.
HL: Paid Vacation, Live Fast Die Young, Operation waste of 15 minutes
The most positive thing about this album is it's short and it's a quick listen. I'm not a fan of the Punk genre though there are some notably good bands to come from that genre. This isn't one of those bands in my opinion.
Probably would have liked it more when I was younger, but this wasn't kicking goals for me today.
This is definitely the style I think of most when people talk about punk rock. But now that I’ve learned that genre includes the likes of the Velvet Underground and Patti Smith, I’m going to judge this a bit more harshly.
Too manic.
When your album is due at midnight and it's 11:59PM.
I don't hate this, but neither do I think it has a lot of merit. At least it's over quickly.
Shortest album ever! Fun and aggressive and silly punk album, a genre that I am not very familiar with. Reminds of a less melodic and slightly faster and angrier version of Green Day.
Gets a star for being so short.
Well it's only 15 min of punk and I didn't even realize the album was over until it sounded like a familiar song and I looked at my phone to realize it was no longer the same album.
Yeah nah, too fast, too loud, too angry. I'd maybe re-listen to one of them.
I tend to like punk albums, not this one.
Yep, sounds like punk! I love the biting commentary in “Beverly Hills” — ‘they’re so lame!’ I feel like I understand certain Portlandia sketches better after listening to this. It feels rude to give it a low rating but these 16 minutes aren’t much to work with. It’s not bad, it’s just basic punk. W
There is nothing special or groundbreaking or unique or even fun about this music. It’s immature and weak - something middle school boys would write and find entertaining. Lyrics and structure are severely limited. Thankfully it was only 15 minutes long.
This is okay. It's crazy short - 14 songs in 15 minutes. I won't revisit it.
Meh album. I can't complain given the runtime is only 15 minutes. It's not terrible, but it just kind of sounds like a local hardcore punk show playing at the dive bar. There's some catchy little riffs. It's just nothing special. **
Interesting. I think this is ska, or am I way off? I thought Rancid with a splash of early Green Day. This album is 14 songs and 15 mins. The band name is Circle Jerks. The album name is Group Sex. It came out in 1980. 2 stars.
i'm not a raging teenager anymore i guess. at least it's short
Terrible noise. I don't care who ot influenced.
Ok. Box ticked. Can see why it's here. Moving on.
Com’è possibile che un album duri 15 minuti e sembri comunque troppo lungo?
Good. Weird.
Group Sex is like so many of those raw punk albums we've had or we know and, while it's short, it's too short to really be anything except an explosion of whatever it is they want to do, aggression, emotion, dunno, it doesn't really come across. Another 2.
This is one of those albums that seems to have been quite influential in the creation of things that were much more fully formed and better (except it seems to have come a lot later than stuff that was already much more fully formed?). It's a pretty aggressive sprint, 14 tracks in just under 16 minutes, no let up in the intensity, aggressive angry punk. Not one for the subtlety fans (the song with the chorus "I've got. The world. Up My Ass." is a particular highlight/lowlight depending on your perspective), but it's definitely got an energy to it that I can empathise with given the number of gentle, passive albums from the 70s we've had on this list. 2/5, could do plenty better but could also do a bit worse.
I'm not into punk rock, it seems. Or it was just bad.
Intense 15 minutes of Punk. Exactly the amount of this kind of music one can digest. But I wouldn´t consider that an album! It´s just an EP and therefor I give them only two stars. 🤷♂️ 2,5
15 minutes of punk at its most raw. If you like hardcore punk, you will love this album. If you don't, there is a good chance you will hate it. There is charm in its simple aggressive vibe. I listened to the album a couple of times. It is bite sized, low commitment to listen to. Even if you don't like the genre, I would say it is worth a listen. Its only 15 minutes, so what the hell right? Not for me, but could be worse. 2/5
Not my cup of tea...
Eh, just okay.
Very short and very fast.
At least it was short
I Just Want Some Skank // 1.5/5
I didn't like it, but it was short and I respect that
One great song
You can tell what they were aiming for and how they missed it. This album sounds like the first time a group of play together, where everyone practiced their instruments by trying to play as fast as they could and only by themselves. Very little sense of timing and lack of complimentary rhythm
пятнадцатиминутный альбом! но самое весёлое что я знаю одну песню! из ос! но слушать я конечно такое не буду))
ok, punk band but nothing special
Not my sorta genre after a while to me all sorta becomes just sounds and not even like really "music" in the nicest way possible !!! rushing this review sorry !!!! and like matt said every song is like 20 seconds long so to me all feels very weird and rapid !!!!
A 15 minute long album that I didn’t bother listening to in full because somehow every song sounded the same
When I joined this project I promised myself that I would listen every track from every album, even though it's not my type. I did it with this album obviously and didn't like it. Good for pogo! For that only reason it gets a 2/5
There's some substance here, but overall I really don't like it. It's short and basic punk.
No excuse not to listen to this one multiple times given its length. Unfortunately I didn’t like it very much.
I didn't have the time to listen to this 15 minute album
the only redeeming quality about this album is that its short.
Some decent punk here but nothing that really stood out too me.
The good thing about hitting your head against a brick wall is that it's so good when you stop. Hell, even I can bang my head for just a quarter of an hour. Short, Fast, Loud.
Crackers 2/5
It's basically art sketches but in musical form.
As a teen in the Bay Area in the early 80’s, bands like these were the soundtrack to all the boys I knew skateboarding in Thrasher t-shirts. There are better bands from this era, though: Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, and the Misfits, to name a few.
It's like they came up with an idea for a song, only managed to make it one minute long and then moved on to the next one before completing the first one. And then they did the same thing for the rest of the album.
Not for me. I don't mind some punk stuff but it's just not that enjoyable to listen to. Good thing it was only 15 minutes.
99% of punk rock sucks. It's the rare 1% that makes it worth listening to. This is not that 1%, but it's better than most.
Eh, it's okay but sorta sad that it's very short compared to what I usually listen too😅😅
At least it was short
This was garbage, but I think it was supposed to be garbage so congrats? At least it was short.
Ça serait facile un 1, mais ils ont compressés leur marde en 16 minutes alors je leur donne un point bonus
It was short, but still felt repetitive. The sort of songs I would only listen to if I was playing Tony Hawk.
Oh, someone's trying really fucking hard to be as good as The Undertones. The difference is that those boys out of Derry had the wit and style to go with the drive and the short songs. As much as I admire the spirit to release an album that's 15 minutes long, just think what they could have achieved with a bit of JJ O'Neill's swagger. I listened. Then I stuck on The Undertones and rocked out.
4 songs in 15 minutes?!?! This is absurdity! Well, actually, I guess this is anarchy. Time is relative though when you're listening to this one. What should feel like a quick punky jaunt, is actually a protracted session of sonic chaos. I respect the intention here, but there's nothing for me to latch onto. Maybe I would have felt different if I'd experienced this album in real time, as a young angst fuelled miscreant who could throw themself into the scene. But that ship sailed long ago for me. It's ironic that the album is titled "Group Sex" which implies a mutually gratifying experience, yet these punks just used my ears and tossed me out after with little to no regard for my pleasure. While there are some relatable little nuggets of thought here like “the whole world is up my ass” (man, ain’t that the truth!), this album is simply a frenzied snapshot from a bygone era.
Let's start with the elephant in the room. "Group Sex" is a terrible album name. There may be worse album names out there, but this might be the most infuriating for how blatant it is. I think "blatant" is probably the best word for this album. The sound is loud and fast, just like the album, which breezes by in 15 minutes. There are entire songs longer than this whole album. The singer isn't great. He's like the worst result of Joey Ramone, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Lemmy Kilmister having, well, group sex. The sound is fine. I don't care. Short album gets short review. 2/5.
Favorite Track: Live Fast Die Young
it was decent and im a fan of punk but i wish the songs were longer and didn't sound so similar to eo 2.5/5
Well if you don’t like a song just wait for the length of a commercial and you get something new. They had some okay stuff, but just sounded like a lot of complaining mostly. I appreciate it was over in less than 20 minutes, probably kept their studio costs down.
Um, I really don’t know what to make of this because I actually quite liked it. Better than the Black Flag album certainly. I’ve been to hardcore punk gigs and I generally don’t get it: the aggression, the pogoing, barging into each other and all that. Such masculine energy. I want to give this 2.5. Torn
Too punk for me. Some of the songs were tight and not bad, but I’m not into the screaming garage type punk music. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:
Short punk songs
I like this like I like a punch to the face. Which is to say, some.
Totally not for me but “World Up My Ass” bumps it up a star
I know these guys were kind of pioneers in hardcore punk. The acerbic nature is not lost on me, but it’s not very clever, it just feels so juvenile in a way I can’t connect with in my late 30s. There are some moments of attempting to sound politically aware. I guess I just prefer the Dead Kennedys who did it with more style and wit. Jello Biafra just kinda put everyone else to shame when it comes to protest lyrics and political satire in punk songs.
Conflicted. If I was 16 I'd be loving it (but aggrieved I just spent £10 on a 15-minute album), but it's just not that great now I've matured. Obviously a seminal hit, but other bands took it to greater and better heights. Also, Hardcore fans must be one of the most annoying of any fan base. I'd hate to go to a gig because of them lot.
I could dig it to a certain degree but im not into punk :/
braindead punk
its 15 minutes long
Mercilfully short.
This feels like an album you'd listen to to prove to your parents you're edgy.
Cautious about Group Sex, was a bit messy and finished quicker than I thought but a good time was had by all.
Just not my thing. I respect the "break stuff" reaction in music from the time, but I just prefer more versatility in an album than this one offers.
Interesting idea(14 tracks in 15 minutes) but not for me
Punk/garage rock, was an interesting listen and I guess I can see the appeal but not for me.
Dura 15 minutos.
Not for me
Well that was fast. I understand why it’s a staple of punk. It’s raw, powerful and quick. But 16 min is a bit short for a whole album. 2 stars
2.2/5 Yeah can't say I'm a huge fan of this style of punk. Not unlistenable though. Best track: Paid Vacation (I guess?)
The best thing about this album is that it's under 20 minutes. After two songs of going crazy it really starts to wear off.
This has to be the shortest album on this list surely. Very simple punk, there's not much to these songs. I literally have nothing to write about this band which is never good, I feel like you can be hardcore punk and still make good music. This album failed to do this.
borde kanske vara en trea men det är för skramligt. coolt med nyskapande och kort album men ändå
At least it was short.
One of many
Hardcore skater punk not quite my scene anymore.
Just.. not good
The first wave of punk was still obtaining an aggressive hold on the minds of the youth well into the dawn of the 1980s, most assuredly in Circle Jerks and their blink-and-you-miss fifteen minutes of "fame" Group Sex. Of course, songs would bow out rather than be fleshed out accordingly but that's the spirit of things and that's documented thoroughly here. Is it the greatest album of all time? Absolutely not. Is it a microcosm of what the punk rock movement represented in America? Yeah, sure, why not. Favorites: I Just Want Some Skank, Operation, World Up My Ass, Live Fast Die Young.
Album aged like sweaty gym socks.
ayaw
My friends were into the CJs when I was a teen. I wasn't quite punk enough to embrace. Less so 34 years on.
First listen Saved 4/14 Top track: Live Fast Die Young
I'd say "not my thing" but hardcore punk can absolutely be my thing if done well (see the five atara I gave Minor Threat). This didn't reach that level though and the 15 min runtime was mercifully short.
Tämä on sisällissotien aikaa galaksissa. Rohkea maanalaisten vapaustaistelijoiden liitto on haastanut mahtavan ALBUM REVIEW YLLÄPITO tyrannian ja sorron. HUOMENNA ON 4 TAI 5 TÄHDEN ALBUMI..... KIITÄN JA KUITTAAN TÄÄLTÄ............TÄHÄN world up my ass
some kind of late garage punk
15 minutes of chaos, which is the right length. Gets more interesting from Back Against Wall on.
I'll preface with a hearty, "not my thing". I found the lyrics funny, and the songs mercifully short. I would not choose to listen again, but it didn't grate or overstay its welcome.
