Reviews (page 2 of 7)
So sweet, love that sound
## In-Depth Review of *São Paulo Confessions* by Suba *São Paulo Confessions*, released in 1999, is a seminal album by Serbian-born producer Mitar Subotic, known as Suba. The album is a rich tapestry of electronic music infused with Brazilian rhythms, showcasing Suba's unique ability to blend traditional sounds with modern production techniques. This review will delve into the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and its lasting influence, while also discussing its pros and cons. ### Lyrics The lyrics of *São Paulo Confessions* reflect the complexities of life in São Paulo, a city characterized by its vibrant culture and stark contrasts. The themes often revolve around desire, urban life, and introspection. - **Cibelle's Contributions**: The album features prominent vocals from Cibelle, whose lyrical content often explores themes of longing and the human experience. Tracks like "Tantos Desejos" (So Many Desires) encapsulate these sentiments, expressing a yearning that resonates with listeners. - **Poetic Imagery**: The lyrics are imbued with poetic imagery that paints a vivid picture of São Paulo's nightlife and emotional landscape. For instance, "Na Neblina" (In the Fog) evokes feelings of mystery and introspection, embodying the city's enigmatic atmosphere. - **Collaborative Spirit**: Suba collaborated with various artists, including Taciana Burrows and Arnaldo Antunes, each bringing their own lyrical styles that enrich the album's narrative depth. ### Music Musically, *São Paulo Confessions* is a groundbreaking work that merges genres such as electronic, acid jazz, downtempo, and Latin music. - **Eclectic Soundscapes**: The album features complex beats and intricate song structures that create an immersive listening experience. Tracks like "Samba Do Gringo Paulista" showcase Suba's ability to weave traditional Brazilian samba rhythms into contemporary electronic music. - **Instrumentation**: The use of live instrumentation alongside electronic elements is a hallmark of the album. Percussionist João Parahyba's contributions add a layer of authenticity to the tracks, grounding them in Brazilian musical traditions while allowing for innovative electronic manipulation. - **Production Techniques**: Suba’s production style is characterized by meticulous layering and textural richness. The interplay between organic sounds and electronic samples creates a lush auditory environment that invites repeated listens. ### Production Suba's production on *São Paulo Confessions* is often lauded for its sophistication and innovation. - **Studio Environment**: Recorded at Wah-Wah Studio in São Paulo, the album captures the essence of the city. Suba’s intimate knowledge of Brazilian music allowed him to create a sound that feels both local and global. - **Manipulation of Sounds**: The album exemplifies Suba’s skill in manipulating sounds to create new sonic landscapes. He blends field recordings with studio techniques to produce tracks that feel alive and dynamic. - **Legacy of Production**: Critics have noted that *São Paulo Confessions* set a new standard for Brazilian electronica. It paved the way for future artists to explore their cultural roots through modern production methods. ### Themes Thematically, *São Paulo Confessions* explores several key ideas: - **Urban Experience**: The album serves as a sonic exploration of urban life in São Paulo. It captures both the vibrancy and the darker aspects of city living—temptation, desire, and existential reflection. - **Cultural Fusion**: Suba’s work embodies a fusion of cultures—melding Serbian influences with Brazilian musical traditions. This cross-cultural dialogue enriches the album’s texture and appeal. - **Introspection and Confession**: The title itself suggests themes of revelation and introspection. It inspired numerous artists to incorporate traditional sounds into electronic formats rather than relying solely on sampled elements. - **Recognition in Global Music Circles**: The album has been included in various lists of essential albums, such as *1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die*, highlighting its significance beyond Brazil. - **Continued Relevance**: Even years after its release, *São Paulo Confessions* continues to be referenced by contemporary musicians seeking to blend electronic music with organic sounds and cultural authenticity. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Innovative Production**: Suba’s pioneering approach to blending electronic music with traditional Brazilian sounds creates an engaging listening experience that feels fresh even today. - **Rich Textural Quality**: The album’s layered soundscapes invite deep listening; each track reveals new details upon repeated plays. - **Cultural Significance**: It serves as an important cultural artifact that reflects the complexities of urban life in São Paulo while showcasing Brazil’s musical heritage. #### Cons - **Accessibility Issues**: Some listeners may find the fusion of genres challenging or may not connect with the Portuguese lyrics if they are not familiar with the language. - **Limited Discography**: Given Suba's untimely death shortly after this album's release, listeners are left wanting more from an artist who showed immense potential for further innovation. ### Conclusion In summary, *São Paulo Confessions* is not just an album; it is a profound exploration of life in one of the world's most dynamic cities through the lens of an artist who understood how to fuse tradition with modernity. Its rich production values, evocative lyrics, and innovative sound make it a landmark work in both Brazilian music and global electronica. Despite some accessibility challenges due to language and genre fusion, its strengths far outweigh any drawbacks. This album remains essential listening for anyone interested in understanding the evolution of contemporary music influenced by cultural diversity.
Atmosfera suave com textura sonoras impressionantes.
Very smooth, and very groovy. A seamless mixture of classic MPB and turn-of-the-century downtempo. What I like most about this album is its willingness to push the boundaries of its sonic palette, and to take both genres to a depth that hasn’t been seen in quite this way before. Masterful.
Nice record! I like that this one focuses more on Brazilian music than Wayang which is also a great record.
Remarkably cohesive album, despite its obvious contrasts. Bossa nova is blended with electronic music, warm vocals and acoustic instrumentation with metallic FM synthesis and distorted drum machines. Weird in parts and yet still relentlessly listenable? I love it.
Absolutely blown away. What an interesting combination of sounds. I plan on returning to this one.
the funkiest I've ever felt while cleaning the kitchen. I really got into the groove :D
First impression: "6495 monthly listeners" 🤔. Second: yes, I'm one of them! I don't think this is my absolut first exposure to this album - I bought quite a bit of circa this downtempo/experimental/nujazz/fusion records around the turn of the centuries and the cover looks familiar? - but it's a first active listening experience. And an excellent one! Time tends to not be kind on ~that~ music from the era, usually, but 'São Paulo Confessions' with its vibes, textures, restrained funk and noise is way above those pastiches from similar sounding German or British producers. I read how Suba likened his experience of living in São Paulo to something out of a tropical 'Blade Runner' and this album seems like a proper expression of that. Held up beautifully and definitely derserves a spot in here. (Now do Amon Tobin, 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵!) Faves: the whole run of the first 3 tracks, Sereia.
I really loved this. As a bassist it kills me that the best part of this is...the drums haha nice Brazilian treat.
Most songs Nice and relaxing to listen to
What a fantastic record. I have no idea how this never came to my attention in 2009.
Mid-90s nouveau samba. This is around the time of Bebel Gilberto’s crossover, and Towa Tei’s bossa nova sound. DJ lounge music was big. You can hear elements of Bjork and Tricky in this album. This downtempo sound was the counterpoint to the harder techno and electronica sound at the time. Mushroom jazz was just emerging in San Francisco. Really enjoying this one. Wish I had heard this at the time. Excellent choice for this list.
There is something about this album that sucked me in from the first 30 seconds. I ordered a physical copy so fast I could have been dreaming.
ok this is a really cool album. not the most sophisticated electronic music ive consumed this year but some really fantastic blending of brazilian jazz and techno elements. listened to this record twice today because it is so soothing and interesting to listen to
One of the most beautiful electronic albums I have heard. Had a great time with this one 9.5/10
This evokes its title for sure. It feels very city, very Brazilian. It is a smooth sound pleasure.
I felt pretty cool listening to this one.
Mostly delicate and mesmerizing and then occasionally fuzzy and noisy. I loved it.
More enjoyable Brazilian fare from the 1001 list… this really is a modern twist on those Brazilian sounds. Really nice and a great soundtrack for the day!
Biiig White Lotus theme energy on Antropofagos, me likey. This bloke died while trying to save newly recorded material from a fire in his studio, what a tragically incredible way for a musician to go.
I really enjoyed this. It's kind of like atmospheric world jazz or something. Pretty smooth.
Good groove for working.
Really fun and easy listening. Fantastic Brazilian flair. Nothing negative to say about it.
SHREDS
Great jem
This is marvelous, i can't believe this exists
Very Island Outpost. Very Samba. This is such a snapshot of like the electronic, chillwave, house music scene of the late 90s. It is retrofuturistic, and oddly optimistic. 5 stars no comment.
What a beautiful and tragic discovery. Such a great album with a wonderful sound but such a sad story for the artist. In terms of fave tracks, certainly Antropofagos is up there along with Samba do Gringo Paulista, Abraco, and the closer. It's all good.
5, nuts
Funky Latin fusion!
I very much enjoy the alt rock scene coming out of South America but it’s mainly been surrounding Argentine, Chilean, and Peruvian groups so a Brazilian group was such a refreshing change of pace paired the bossa nova and samba influences on this album make it an easy 5/5 for me!
Awesome, jazzy, dark-ish beats.
Loved this - never heard it before -
Made for a very chilled Sunday morning listen and met with approval at home.
Reading the backstory for this album before listening really piqued my curiosity: a Serbian musician living in Brazil, attempting to combine the local samba and bossa nova sounds with contemporary downtempo and electronic instrumentation. I would say this album mostly lives up to my initial intrigue. The combination of these sounds creates a simultaneously warm and nocturnal atmosphere, like wandering through a busy city on a muggy summer night. If this album was all atmosphere, though, it wouldn't stick with me like it did, and Suba displays a genuine talent for songcraft throughout the tracklist. There's some truly ingenious instrumental work at play here, particularly the enveloping bass and the combination of digital and analog percussion. Each song, while mining a similar energy and tone, had a distinct progression and instrumental palette, ensuring that the album didn't remain too monotonous. It's sad that, shortly after this album's released, Suba passed away, because Sao Paulo Confessions feels like it could have been the start of a very special music career.
Very cool stuff!
How sad to read that he died at 38, rescuing his work from a smoke-engulfed studio. I guess this list is keeping his name alive; I'm not sure I would have heard of him, otherwise. Brazilian chill-out. It does feel quite dated (90s), but that doesn't diminish its qualities and more interesting elements; there's tons of interesting percussion here and it's beautifully put together.
Take the blue pill, it hits just right.
Sick, great atmosphere
This is an unexpected amazing gift that I didn't realize I needed in my life. It's like finding a $50 bill in a old pairs of jeans that still somehow fit. Fun, unexpected gift. This is why I'm doing this to find something that I may not like and somehow love it with the opposite is true, as well. 4
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this after reading the reviews that described it as background music. I was expecting another excruciatingly dull example of electronic music like the William Orbit one on the list, but this has way more interesting things going on despite sharing some of the same aesthetics.
I wish I had been more into this kind of worldbeat/acid jazz electronica when it first came out, because every album I have heard in this genre (which I acknowledge I just kind of just made up) I have really loved. Really too bad Suba died so tragically at such a young age.
Amazing!!! But sometimes registering some of the sounds were annoying
This sort of stuff is my jam. Proper lock in type shit. Didn’t understand a word and it was still clasa
Was a fan of mid 90s trip-hop. And this Latin themed version of it is quite atmospheric (if a bit drawn out and repetitive in places). Had on background - probably best way to listen.
oh my god

I would put this on and groove with it. Love
One of these songs reminded me of Bury a Friend by Billie Eilish
I listened to this album as I drove around downtown Glendale, helping reunite a lost old man with his missing car. From the moment I hit play, São Paulo Confessions was immediately right up my alley, with a sound that, oddly enough, harkened back to my days of listening to Monstercat: chill electronic music ethereal female vocals floating over top of it. Suba's blend of breakbeat percussion with watery synths creates a sound that feels like floating on water. There's something really cool about taking Latin dance beats and utilizing them in such an introspective atmosphere, laying the groundwork for some incredibly catchy vocal melodies. The constant use of shaker-sounding percussion also lends a sense of motion and bustling energy to the album, with whistling string instruments creating a high energy atmosphere. Sometimes Suba utilizes even stranger and more out-of-the-box sounds, like children's toys and what sound like duck quacks, and they're simply rad. Some of the beats even start leaning into a funky and soul-like realm, in addition to some occasional dips into unsettling and unnerving soundscapes. As much as this album clicked for me, it never quite reached full potential, though I am optimistic that another Suba-produced project just might. In the process of researching this album, I read the story of Suba producing an album for Bebel Gilberto, only for the studio to catch fire; in the process of saving the recordings, Suba inhaled too much smoke and ultimately passed away. That album was Tanto Tempo, and it apparently is also on this 1001 Albums List, so I eagerly anticipate the day when we reach it. Highlights: Tantos Desejos, Na Neblina, Segredo, Antropofagos, Felicidade, Um Dia Comum (Em SP), Abraco, A Noite Sem Fim
Pretty cool laid back jazzy samba. Enjoyed this.
Super groovy and chill, great bop that takes you OUT OF IT
Fun new sounds. This was great to me and my wife later on. I'll save it for future listening
good calm album
Super solid album. Was coming to it on the plane for sure.
A really interesting album that was a pleasant listen. A lot of different sounds and genres being mixed together kept me on my toes, made for some great background music.
I really liked this. The beats are awesome, and the foreign vocals are like a cherry on top. Who knew acid-jazz would be my thing!
Unique and interesting, which is more I can say for most new finds I've encountered. Points for that.
This was an unexpected delight. I particularly liked the "Antropofagos" (great percussion) and "Samba de Gringo Paulista" (which is the mash-up '90s electronica and samba I didn't know I wanted). Suba was onto something here—it's a shame he didn't live long enough to keep exploring.

Good vibes, nice sound.
chill latin jazz, sounds really nice
Funky!
God dang groovy
feels like a line can be drawn from *Amon Tobin's Bricolage activating me as the most annoying music listener of all time* straight to me absolutely loving this album. sustained atmosphere, a humid night unfolding in slow motion. i'm vibing.
Hey, you know I did this endeavor to discover new music and that's exactly what this is. So I'm going a little higher than I should. Just to remember that there's different types of music out there that I should be exposed to once in awhile
Really enjoyed this. Listened on repeat all day.
Album art alone, I was expecting a deep Brazilian influence, percussion, and maybe some night-time vibes. It's surreal to me how the resulting record is both exactly what I expected it to be, and not quite what I was expecting it to be at all. It reminds me of (and predates) those first couple of Burial albums, lots of ambience and texture, it's a slow drip of energy that soon encapsulates the area it's presented in. It's got Brazil etched onto it, but not in the obvious way, it's in the percussive melodies, it's in the echoes, and the choice of instrumental samples that are then warped and transformed into... This. A few minutes down a rabbit hole and— holy shit, this is the guy behind Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo. What a legend. And he DIED rescuing those tapes? Just a few days after releasing this gem? Historic significance noted. I would've been happy to listen to this regardless. This album took a day to dissect. It creeps up on you, the influences are hidden, and it drones on and on for the benefit of the gifted DJ. It's that eerie tropical night vibe that makes me dock this just a few decimals shy of a 5 star record, it's not a bad thing, it's emotion, it's impressive. It's just a little uncomfortable sometimes and that's not my default vibe, beautiful as it can be. 4.3/5
This is why I do this thing. To find albums like this that I've never even heard of before. This is exactly my style. Jazzy, electronic, smooth, rhythmic. Will be adding this to some playlists.
I had never heard of this. I like most of this; it’s pleasant. I think the second side is better, at least to my ears. I know that every band doesn’t have to belong in a category but is this Trip Hop? I do know that this record is a vibe. It’s so good that I listened to it twice. I enjoyed it enough that I would buy a physical copy. So much better than The Black Album.
Have never heard of this artist. This kind of music is definitely outside of my normal bubble. This reminded me of the Gotan Project album that was also on this list - which was a cool surprise since I liked half of the songs on that one. This one was an even better surprise. I ended up liking the first 5 songs and the last 4 songs for 9 total. Many of these were instrumentals - but I did like some of the ones with singing even though I couldn't understand the Portuguese. The instrumentals will be fun to hear on my instrumental playlist and when any of these pop up on my automated playlists they will be a cool change of pace. Thanks 1001 Albums project for putting this on my radar. Maybe electronic latin music should be in my bubble since this has been a positive experience twice now :) Liked songs on Spotify: 9/12 Rating: 4/5
428/1089 - Sounds like Apple Music has some problems with track transitions unfortunately. I think this is a very well-produced album. I wish it was jazzier and had more interesting songs going on because it definitely felt like background music a lot of the time which doesn't exactly fit my criteria of "album to listen to." I'm kinda between 4 and 5 on this one and am reconsidering my rating scale.
Fantastic! This record took me from Jersey to a beach in Brazil in an instant!
Great listen, thoroughly enjoyable, right up my street. Who knew Brazilian electronic music was this good?
This was a great album. You can almost see where others bring electronica into contact with another aspect of pop/jazz/world music. I expect it was another step in the evolution. Plus, very listenable.
Vibes! A bit of bossa nova mixed with electronic and alternative. I see myself returning to it.
this is the vibes-iest 4 I will ever give an album and I don't think I could defend it if someone called me on it, I just listened to this at the right time it's probably a 3. it really should be a 3. the part of me that super cares about every review being correct is so mad I'm not giving this a 3
Another cool album I've never heard. Will be saving cos I love the vibes.
Number: 67 Date: 03/07/2026 Artist: Suba Album: São Paulo Confessions Year: 1999 Genre: Ambient Latin Acid-jazz Rating: 4 Notes: Before: No clue, I'm anticipating something with a Latino flavor. Maybe in the triphop realm, I'm hoping. During: Hhm, I like. The first track instantly makes me think of Stereolab x Sade. I start reading the Wikipedia article midway through the second track and learn the artist is Serbian. Wow, I never would have guessed that. That make this so much more intriguing trying to imagine what it was like when he were putting this music together. Will continue listening with piqued interest. OK, so just read the Wikipedia article on him. I highly recommend reading that if you have not. BTW, I have not read any listener reviews yet, will do so after posting my review. After: 3 - my personal rating 4 - suitability for this list 4 - relevance ----------------------------- 4 - composite rating
I'm always down for a musical adventure, and turns out, this is like a smooth cosmic ride that's super well done. Not my usual style, but I really dug the vibes and production. Give it a listen if you're feeling funky. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Tantos Desejos - Você Gosta - Segredo - Felicidade
This was a very interesting album. It was nice to get something a little bit different on the list. It is a little long, but not overly so. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
I was throughly impressed. Been on this new millenium dream pop type nostaligia binge. And this album lives, eats, and breathes that sound. Its got some samba, some electronic elements, some hip hop, some jazz and some pop. And not a lick of English. I like the layering, alot of songs start with an annoying sound and then the layering starts to happen and it becomes so imperative how that sound becomes important. Solid 4 stars. Maybe 5, I'll decide tomorrow.
Very cool trip-hop elements. Reminds me a lot of Tricky. Had never heard of this before, but it’s a really cool listen. I will dive in more.
Me gusta
I would make out to this music.
Quite enjoyed this. A few tracks where the repitiveness was a bit much, but overall I'd probably listen again.
Definitely a unique approach, and the latin influence is interesting.
Tho I'm still fuzzy on the origins of this record and the untimely death of its creator, I know that what I'm hearing - a technologized bossa nova - is not something I was expecting to dig as much as I do. What makes it work - in fact, what's entirely obvious about the project, almost to a fault - is that, as substantial and meaningful as the genre is, bossa nova is also atmospheric music: the vibes are the colorful engenderers of reality, of essences & raw materials. The same is true of the best electronic music, be it Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Bros, or Brian Eno (a hero of Suba's). When I put this record on, tho I don't know what it feels like to be in São Paulo, having never been there, I feel like I'm 'somewhere,' which means the vibes are working. Sim?
This was actually pretty surprising. Electronic music infused with samba and a bit of bossa nova. Overall, a chill and fun listen. It wasn't something incredible but it was a pleasant listen.
Never heard of them before but that was very nice, loving the rhythm and swing
Just a nice, chill album to vibe along to. Solid 4 Stars.
Sad stuff what happened to the musician. This list is bloated with 90s electronic music, but this album stood out enough for me to want to revisit in the future. I like the Latin twist to it. Some people referred to it as Wine Bar Music, but that ain't a bad thing in my book.
I liked this recording. I preferred the tracks with vocals but I enjoyed the whole album. The instrumental tracks became too repetitive for me but initially I liked the rhythms and the instrumentation, they just went on too long for my tastes. I liked the vocalist's voice.
I am not familiar with this genre as a whole and never heard of this artist prior. I really enjoyed the blending of the trio hop style with the Latin and Brazilian influences. This album is great and one I would revisit.
It was solid. Not my cup of tea but it was musically nice.
I enjoyed this
honestly i thought this was pretty swag
Great vibes on this one
I thoroughly enjoyed this album!
💃
I quite like this combination of Brazilian soundscapes and rhythms with electronics and even the odd funky guitar riff. Nice vocals too. Very cinematic. I'll round up to a 4 as it was a very pleasant discovery for me.
first listen 90s and european and brazilian
3.9 2x catch up 2/11. brazil! (by a serb)
I was pleasantly surprised by this. I didn't understand anything they were saying but the music was real chill.
Not really my style of music, but still good to listen to.
Enjoyed this one. Glad to hear something completely different. The modern flair mixed with world music works well.
Pretty solid.
Wow, så fed!!!!
It's good, but not what I would normally listen to.
Honestly pretty good
Amazing vibes
A surprise. Another first time on the group and music. I liked the fusion.
Enjoyed this seamless mix of acid jazz / world rock. The Brazilian samba, salsa, and bossa nova were tasty. They gave it a very unique voice and vibe that made them far more interesting than most of the world and electronica mixes that I recall hearing in and around 1999. You can practically feel the pre-millennial tension creeping around below the pulsing street anthems that Suba presented throughout the album. As a drummer and percussionist I enjoy hearing rhythmically driven songs and albums, and this was one of the better ones on this list in that regard. Faves: "Antropofagos (Cannibals)", "Sereia (Mermaid)", and "Pecados da Madrugada (Sins Before Dawn)". I am disappointed by some of the reviewers on here. It feels like they aren't sophisticated enough, or too lazy, to bother learning about South American rhythms and why from a song arrangement perspective these tracks are impressive. Instead, they would rather just dismiss them outright because they have electronic elements. Electronic elements actually make music more interesting spicing up the dreary same old instrumental arrangements that we have all heard a thousand times for the past century.
Love the vibe of this one. This is a 4 star for me.
Lowkey fire. Why do people dog on this? For electronica, it's actually quite varied and interesting to listen to; not to mention sultry and cool. Suba can hang.
Interesting and good 👍
Really liked it. Hard to pin down a genre so most songs had my attention
Amo brasil!
Interesting stuff. Trance hip hop style.
One of the contributors to this list seems to really like Brazilian music! So much so that they included a solo album from one of the country's most prominent producers, the Serbian born Suba. I was once introduced to Suba's music through an obscure compilation of modern Brazilian music called "Caipirissima: Batucada Eletronica". I bought it on a whim because it looked interesting and had a track by the amazing Arto Lindsay. I imagine it's long out of print now and not on any streaming platforms, but it was a cool mix of electronic music with Brazilian bossa nova. It was also the last time I heard of Suba before this challenge. This album reminds me a lot of that compilation. It's a cool interesting take on Brazilian music. Suba died quite young and I can see that adding to his mystique within certain circles, not unlike the well known rock stars who we lost too soon. Does that mean that it was an album that we needed to hear before we died? For most of us, probably not. But I still liked it.
A new one that I've never heard of (rare) and an excellent mix of club beats with South American / Brazilian vibes, reminiscent of St Germain, Goran Project etc. I really like it and will add to my listening rotation, which is a good result for this project - to find out unheard gems! Sad story regarding his death however and why there was no more Suba music.
I get that coffee house by the beach vibe from this album. Almost cultural, to a degree… São Paulo confessions…. Haha. I really enjoyed this album from beginning to end.
Yeah this is a 4. Fun groovy album no bad songs, I dug the Brazilian feel to it.
What a interesting combination of sounds. This was quite the quiet the collection of sounds. I liked it a lot. It really has a way of putting me in a mood, a mood I couldn't even describe to you.
This was very cool. Deep and dark at times, other times, trad Brazilian. Super cool vibes. While this one may not make my regular rotation, this was a dope listen.
After hours jazz lounge; strong Morcheeba vibes on a few songs. Would listen again
I liked the smooth chill vibe of this album, but some of the electronic songs were a little wacky, and the whole album wore thin by the end. For me it's a 3, but, objectively speaking, it's probably a 4.
really like how each song had its ow sound and they seemed to explore different moods really cool.
Sao Paulo Confessions was a pretty enjoyable album. I always am in the mood for a good electronic album especially when it is something different from the typical EDM i often hear including things like Acid Jazz which this album falls into. The songs often had this cool downtempo-ish vibe to them which made them have a cool and serious tone. The Latin elements on display were pretty cool too. Some of the electronic elements did not mesh together well and ended up being a bit annoying but it never got too terrible. I still ended up enjoying this album and i am a bit sad to find out this was Suba's last album before his death, RIP Suba. Best Song: Na Neblina Worst Song: Felicidade
Great
Fun and interesting, very groovy.
Best Song: Samba do Gringo Paulista. What an absolutely electric groove track. a heady, enveloping wall of sound. Worst Song: Pecados Da Madrugada. I lack the musical vocabulary to articulate what I disliked about the tone of the guitar used on this track, but boy did I dislike it. Overall: This was fantastic. I've not listened to anything quite like it. Wonderful production, underpinned by (usually) great vocals and instrumentation. A really exciting new find for me.
Electronic Latin music with a bit of Acid Jazz - an album mainly to chill to. It's quite pleasant but not really my cup of tea. My favourite track was "Antropófagos (Cannibals)".
I was not at all familiar with this artist. I don't generally like electronic type music, but I enjoyed this much more than I would've expected. Definitely good earbud music while I work. 3.5/5 #189
Before: No reference point for this. From the name, I'm thinking it's some sort of samba or bossa nova? After: Absolutely loved this one. The opening track, and all those with vocals are definitely the strongest for me. But I kept being constantly surprised by the places this album went. All the dnb, Latin, electronic, even middle eastern influences all really blended super well and made for just some really smooth listening. This is definitely my favorite album so far and one I'll add to my rotation from here out. 4/5
I quite enjoyed this. It's perfect music to have on while working. I thought the production was really cool. That was probably what stood out the most to me. I'm not totally sure what genre this would be considered but it seemed like it would maybe be considered acid jazz? It was pretty psych and experimental in some places. It struck a really good balance between kinda weird and chill.
This was a cool different sound that I really enjoyed. Great vocals.
Overall, I think the album would be more enjoyable without a lot of the vocals. The instrumentals are interesting and varied, creating an excellent atmosphere. The album grew on me the longer I listened. Favorite Songs: Um Dia Comum (Em SP), Felicidade, Abraco
This is my preferred electronica with less pulsing and more atmosphere. Saint Germain from Wish maybe? I like it quite a bit but I'm going to go listen to Tourist about a billion consecutive times now.
Excellent album. Reminded me a lot of St.Germain, it has some moments when it's going into more trancey-like house music, a bit of repetition, but otherwise it's a really good one to have playing in the background or to create a certain mood or vibe.
Interesting! Not every song was a hit, but I really appreciated listening to something completely out of my wheelhouse.
- very good i enjoyed it while doing work -the womans voice is amazing to listen to -the mans voice kinda takes me out of the song sometimes -overall really good
Oh wow, so this is the guy that died in the fire saving the Bebel Gilberto album we had. Another musician lost way too soon. Also another reminder about all the fascinating connections between people in the music industry. I really like the vibes of this album. It's chill and spacy and floaty, and very technically well done too. It's not the type of music I'd normally listen to, but I really enjoyed it!
It's pretty cool I guess. The kind of music you'd hear at Mango or H&M while trying on jumpers.
Tekno i akustisk bossastil
so fun. i hope i remember that this exists so i can listen to it again sometime
hell yeah this was awesome
This was fun! None of it jumped out at me, but as a whole it was a nice listen and it was enjoyable both while doing something else and while sitting and listening to it attentively.
Very groovy, I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would.
A nice chill bossa nova electronica thing. Thoroughly enjoyed as a nice back ground layer while getting some work done. I'd happily go back to it.
Great record, a softer approach to electronica, but very enjoyable.
Very enjoyable chill album, got me through a very sleep deprived early morning flight
I was ok with it. Prefer to give 3.5 stars…
I loved this. Didn't know what to expect going into this but as it went on I just kept liking it more. The classical Latin style mixed with that late 90s synth worked really well! Was quite unlike anything I've heard in a while.
Really good mix of influences tied together in this electronic package that works more often than not. Some of the beats and production choices are great, some nice experimental work while remaining accessible and enjoyable. The opening 4/5 songs are pretty excellent, sets the tone for the album very well. Falls a bit flat as it goes on but some of the later albums cuts like the stretch from Sereia to Abraço keep it from dragging. Great use of percussion throughout the entire album, love how densely layered and experimental it gets. Honestly really enjoyable.
Not my usual genre at all. I found it really evoked the feelings of isolation that one can feel when in a vast, foreign city. Perfect listening for travelling around Europe.
Bit same-y for an hour worth of music, but i loved the combination of 90s electronic music and Brazil.
This was the first recommendation by this website for me that was genuinely surprisingly good. I have never heard of this artist, and the music was strangely distinctive. It was chill, sort of lo-fi in a way. I loved it, and I think this will be on repeat for a while!
Srbin pravi brazilsku elektro muziku. Visoka doza kreativnosti i rekla bih čak i inovativnosti. Bravo brate!
Felt like a fever dream in warm sao paulo. Experimentally enriching
This was great! Really enjoyed 'A Noite Sem Fim'
Liked it quite a bit. Not my typical style of music, and I don't speak Spanish super well, but I could still get down.
quite cool. I liked.
I liked it, but don’t really know what it is. Jazz? Electronic? Some weird amalgamation with Portuguese lyrics?
Sometimes I get off kilter, or think I do, by rating something, like in this case, a latin beat album, in isolation of others in similar or same genres that I have not heard for a while, like, and maybe over-rate? Or maybe underrate if I don't give it enough credit. It happens sometimes. But recently I gave a fair rating to an album I liked but identified a few things that just didn't make it shine. Not so with this album! This IS amazing. Wow... this is ... what latin music ought be and is. I like other latin style bands for sure, but this stands up with the most of them! Definitely fun, definitely worth the listen!
Pleasantly surprised. Nice blend of Brazilian staples with electronic elements. The instrumental moments work the best for me. 3.5
Chill af
Another great Suba album
Very interesting album and one that I’d like to listen to again sometime. Cross between Latin and electronic music
Definitely an interesting one. It's like Bossa Nova/Latin/Eletronic all fused together. Cool album. Not loads going on, but certainly cool.
Appreciate the fusion of electronica and classic Brazilian music
Enjoyed the vibe, smooth and atmospheric. Great study music with just enough texture to keep it interesting.
This was cool. Very unique and fun. I liked it a lot.
Don't judge a book by its cover or whatever but this album cover is beautiful, and the music doesn't stray either. Perfect for in the background listening
Mä toivon, että joku on samplannut tätä liquid junkassa. Tää kuullostaa jo valmiiks ihan siltä -rummut. Siistiä soundia, elektronista mutta silti tosi perinteistä. Parhaat: Tantos Desejos, Um Dia Comum (Em Sp), Sereia, A Noite Sem Fim
3.6 - I liked it! Nothing mind blowing, but just chill and interesting
Psychotropidelic
Nice Latino-esque groove on this. A number of the songs were a bit too repetitive, but I get what he was going for. It was... fun, you know? Enjoyed this a good del, but some of the songs went on too long. Top tracks: "Tantos Desejos," "Antropofagos"
sick beatz
oh yeah baby bossa nova!!!
Never heard of Suba or any of the other artists on this album. Really enjoyed it, more so on the second listen.
I missed this one when it came out, although it would have been right up my alley. Then again, the mid 1990s were brimming with spectacular seeming experiments in electronics, beats, breaks, bass and dub effects. Not to mention the whole drum&bass hoopla and what was happening in hip hop. Still, this should / could have been bigger. Whether that warrants a place on the "1000 albums you need to hear before you die" list might be another question, given the plethora of release both from Brazil and by producers on similar paths as Suba. But should these confessions come your way, have a seat in the confession box. It should be worth your while.
good chill vibes. musica piano bar/ brasiliana
I quite liked this album, very funky fresh and felt pretty timeless. Probably wont listen to this a lot but great background music and probably club music too.
Nice and different, pretty unique. Kinda long
This was a fun one. I definitely feel like I am transported to Sao Paulo. It's very trippy and transcendental. It almost gives me a little air of Tame Impala plus like Brazil and other influences that I can't put my thumb on. I couldn't understand a word of it but I feel like I got the vibe.
Superior background sounds
Great discovery! An enjoyable fusion of Brazilian beats, traditional instrumentation and dance infused electronica. I don’t listen to many “chill out” albums these days, but if I did I would definitely consider this. A solid contender for inclusion on a Sunday morning set list at Cafe Kelvinos .
Exciting tropical sounds mixed with a fresh array of wild new tones
started slow but i liked it? this is a trip hop sampling dream
I will keep this in mind when I need beats
Pleasant background music for sitting in the sun
I have no idea what or who this is. I snuffle this sort of thing up though, so I very much enjoyed. It’s probably too long, but it’s such a vibe that I didn’t really care.
Great samba music, interesting mix of musical styles (piano, tech, percussion, etc.)
Espectacular. Me he guardado Voce gosta y Samba do gringo paulista.
Very cool, I loved the vibes great experiencw for my earholes
very cool spin on electronic music! I'm just rating everything a 4/5, I need to think more ...
Slightly confusing but a good listen
Solid listen, and great exposure to something different. Kind of a crazy backstory with the composer/artist dying right as the album was released, but the music stands in its own. It’s not a genre or style that I would typically listen to repeatedly, but I feel like it’s compelling enough to revisit.
Chill electronic Latin American grooves
Na Neblina is cool. I like the combo of Latin rhythm and electronica. Not a lot of notes about individual songs, but I love the energy and overall sound.
Of classy lounges Mixed with modern techno sounds Genre crash success
Interesting and exotic - very jazzy and ‘late night lounge’. A bit much for my Monday morning maybe but I definitely liked it and would listen again.
4/5
On a different day, I’d probably have more to say about this. But today I’ll just say I really enjoyed it. 4/5 Highlights: Pecados Da Madrugada
4.5/5 Diggin the instrumentals, vocals took a minute to get used to but the repetition in the background is hypnotic. Cafe lounge music with some tracks that offer something different to keep the album fresh and exciting.
Like being in a wine bar, but, you're also on a bad date. Could be the perfect evening but something is missing
Can't keep my body still
01) Tantos Desejos - 7,5 02) Você Gosta - 7,5 03) Na Neblina - 7,5 04) Segredo - 7,5 05) Antropófagos - 8,0 06) Felicidade - 7,5 07) Um Dia Comum (Em SP) - 8,0 08) Sereia - 7,5 09) Samba Do Gringo Paulista - 8,0 10) Abraço - 7,5 11) Pecados da Madrugada - 7,5 12) A Noite Sem Fim - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,63 (76/100) Current ranking: 174/380 Ovo je uz Laibach jedini album nekoga sa naših prostora na ovoj listi što je naprosto nevjerojatno s obzirom na činjenicu čega sve ima u ovih 380 albuma koje sam ja do sada preslušao. Idem sada preslušati neki album od EKV-a iz protesta :-P This was an enjoyable listen, a good album.
This was a very interesting record that could have been greater if not for the album length and over use of electronica in some songs. When this album is going heavy with the Brazilian/Latin music and influence, it is at its best. Unfortunately there are tracks that lean a bit too heavy on the electronica and kind of ruin the vibes at times. It is also just over an hour long, and I feel a couple tracks could have been trimmed back in length and had a bigger impact to the listener. More of a 3.5
Forgive Suba, Father, for their infectious São Paulo soundscapes have led me to sin.
Felt like I was in São Paulo, not that I’ve ever been, but it felt right? For all I know it’s more Casa Bonita than São Paulo but the vibes got me
This sounds like what I normally listen to when I'm at work. Neat. 4/5
Never heard of this before until now. Really like it. Downtempo acid jazz bossa nova. It rules. I love it. Very good cleaning/focus music.
This album was awesome, again, variety is the spice of life. It was jazz but also almost electronic. Blended a lot of great sounds and brought in vocals in just the right amount of parts. I particularly enjoyed Tantos Desejos, Felicidade, Sereia, Abraco, and Pecados da Madrugada.
It's Friday night, you are taking some cocktails with friends in one of those lounge bars with glass structures and this records starts playing. You made it, life's good. Even without considering my yuppie fever dream induced by those late 90s movies set-ups, this is indeed a wonderful chill album.
Very surprising album today. The mix of genres here is fantastic.
Heel bijzonder album! FAVO: Tantos Desejos, Antropofagos, Felicidade, Sereia, Samba do Gringo Paulista, Pecados da madruga
Pretty slick little downtempo album
This is great! One of those kind of obscure picks on this list that I'm very happy to have discovered.
Very much enjoying the Brazilian electronic grooves. I'm surprised this wasn't on high rotate in the cooler Auckland cafes in the late 90's. Or maybe it was and I'm less cool than I thought I was 🤔 4½/5
this sounds adjacent to something dad would've played in like 2010. pretty groovy
Never heard of the group.
i looooveeeedddd this….it sounded like it could have easily been on the trainspotting soundtrack which makes sense cos it reminded me of underworld aka electronic rave music but like. somehow more intelligent? idk i really enjoyed it. fav tracks: sereia; a noite sem fim
this was really interesting! it made me focus on the thing i'd had trouble focusing on all day so i feel like it must have some effective hypnotic quality so that's cool.
3.6+... this is really chill I like it.
This is #day37 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here we are with "an album by the Serbian-born musician Suba, his musical account of life in that humid, foggy, and manic megalopolis." Hell, yeah, that's the album description to get me sold on. Not to mention the album title and the artwork. What else do you need? Oh, wait, the music? It's dark and sultry, with a touch of wickedness to it... It kind of sounds like Sade Adu accompanied by a supergroup consisting of Amon Tobin and Bohren & der Club of Gore, peppered with Latin and Samba, though. During the listen, I raised my eyebrows a couple of times. That was fun. I'm giving it a strong 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day38.
Dance
Very gorgeous voice and creative fusion Latino style.
Café music but seriously good stuff. I do not know much about if anything about acid jazz so this was refreshing to hear and enjoy. I does remind me of DJ Shadow in places. I was quite hard to pick out tracks as its quite ambient so it al flowed together nicely. Stand out tracks: - Voce Gosta - Sereia - Samba do Gringo Paulista - Abraco
Loved this
Not an album I'm familiar with. It had song good tunes on it.
Yeah this is very smooth and likeable
Loved the beat
Definitely enjoyed this one! Not something I'd actively listen to, but a really good vibe to have on while working on other things. 4/5
An album meticulously evocative of a place and time, even during its many, many sections without a vocal track. Powerful. Suba's love for music is evident, and sadly is why he is no longer with us. A rare breed.
Cuban electronic fission
Wow! Amazing, love these unexpected gems on this list
I forget. I think it was good probably.
first time hearing this - can’t believe i missed it when it came out!
Chill, ambient... played 3 times through just going about my work. Nice background music.
Actually I only like it for 3 stars but in favor of brazilian music and how surprised i was discovering this album i rise one star to four
4/5
A nice surprise. The top review mentioned Stereolab and that was the very first thing I thought when it started. Sweet female vocals over repetitive jazzy music. Throw in a bit of electronic in there and that's this album. Repetition is perfectly fine with me, maybe cut a song or two from the runtime but other than that it was a very enjoyable listen.
Another great example of something I'd never heard of and really enjoyed it. Funky electronic and atmospheric. I listened on a loop 3 times through and didn't get bored. But I also didn't realise where it started and finished so it's more a vibe than an album.
Really cool example of a fusion album working well and staying fresh throughout the play. Loved the trance Eurobeat feel laced with traditional Latin instrumentation, it felt like the pinnacle of everything 90s trance was trying to do. Really refreshing to have a non-English speaking album again too. Felt like it should be in a slick penthouse bar on New Year’s Eve 1999 .
Sick. Got strange looks from a woman coming out of Woolworths. Fair enough. My dancing looked like a seizure. Nice beats though
loved it super vibes
Great intro. Really love the fidelity level, I'm so blown away not even 30 seconds in. The bass is deep, the vocals are clear and present, the high percussion is spread across space masterfully. By the time the piano comes in, I'm really grooving. This deserves so many more song plays than it currently has. Really thoroughly enjoyed this, will be listening more, and can't wait to be having some wine with my wife and making dinner and thinking "I have a perfect album to put on!"
This is a great listen, interesting instrument decisions and the melding with electronic sound is so good. The vocals are sort of whatever, I think the tracks would still be great without them, but they are pretty.
The album invites you to relax. Some passages a little too monotonous, otherwise quite beautiful and varied soundscapes.
Groovy little album. More jazzy lofi than what is favoured today and some very 90s vocals. But a dope little ride. I’d love to listen to this while I do some work.
3.75
Smooooth and sweet
I really enjoyed this album. Chill w a Brazilian samba beat.
What an amazing album!! Lovely tropical mood (with a sinister edge), totally immersive and quite mind-blowing at parts. Just deducting a star because it drags at some parts.
Bossa Nova Electronica, long live Suba
The vocals, delivered in what I believe is Portuguese, bring the music to a higher, lighter level. This wasn't a lean-back-and-chill album for me, it kept my attention all the way through. The music bounces joyfully from anxious to manic to euphoric and moods I know but can't describe at the moment. Some of these tracks are their own ecosystems.
This was great, very chilled and laid back. A perfect summer album
Nice mellow music. Great vocals. Not anything I would seek or purchase. I would like to hear this in an upscale bar or restaurant.
Not sure if I'd listen to this in every situation, but it's great for focus and relaxation. Pleasantly surprised.
Brazillans are good at music. And futebol, too. This is likably chill and easy grooving, and just a touch trippy. In one's next life, one will take the aspiration to learn Portuguese a bit more seriously.
Nice. Jazzig sphärisch schön.
Absolutely wonderful! Great variety, good energy, strong vocals, and all super duper lush.
we got in to fado after a trip to portugal and it was interesting when it was live but doesn't seem to translate recorded. this album reminded me of fado.
This is what I love about this project. I never would have come across this unless it was forced upon me. But I loved it. I listened to it three times today. Sometimes haunting, then bizarre, but always interesting. There’s only a couple of boring parts. Can’t wait to revisit! 4.5/5
Interesting, Not my style to listen too, and I don't know the language. Also a bit mono beat for me. Giving it a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 for that reason - although I am sure it is loved by many (rating is for my consumption)
I liked this. It went on a bit though. Probably not best listened to in the dark on the bus going home when it is zero degrees outside. I want to give it 3.5
- Never heard of this before - This is what I'm here for, doubt I would have ever heard this without using this website - Really enjoyed it despite language barrier - Could move up when I relisten a few times
3.5/5 Best Track: Tantos Desejos
Beautiful
This is all I look for in an ambient record
One of the sadder stories about an album I’ve heard especially so far on this list. Made worse that the album is so good. What a cool mix of sounds and what a cool guy.
I found this fun! I was listening to it first thing on a dreary commute and i wanted to be transported to Brazil and dance on down
This was fun!
Jazzy and melodic. Some great dance rhythms with a touch of psychedelia throughout.
