Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Ska, soul & pub rock. Fun horns, uptempo bass and lively drums, pretty crappy if animated charismatic thin nasal lead vocals fleshed out with some backing singers. High energy but easy going. More interesting as an artifact of a place/time in UK pop culture than as an album I want to listen to.
Pareceu-me uma tentativa de parecer um The Cure acelerado. Datado e pouco expressivo.
Different than expected
Day281 - i thought maybe they would be more than their one hit but then i listened and realized i was wrong
The album your high school friends’ ska band would have made circa 1996-2000.
Just really hate their voices. I liked the brass/chicago like instrumentation but that’s really the only thing that brings it up to a two for me. I also did kind of like the scrolling the radio bit on the first track but had it gone on for like five more seconds it would’ve gotten kinda annoying.
Meh. The only reason this gets a two is because I know what a one on this list truly sounds like. The back half of the album was kinda tough to get through, probably only going to listen to Come On Eileen from this group.
There's a reason that they aren't Two Hit Wonders
Punky feeling, not quire there...
I’ve already forgotten about this album
First stong has a Sex Pistols sample. Horns! Named after party drugs! Always interesting when an album that doesn't contain the bands biggest single is selected. There really isn't enough trombone in rock-based music. I really enjoyed a lot of the album. Geno is clearly the most popular song on this album, based on listens in Spotify, and I get it. Total Wall of Sound. Keep It feels like it was added to the album to pad for time, thematically and tonally it doesn't really fit the rest of the album. It also reminds me a lot of Everclears - I Will Buy You A New Life. A poem? Yuck. On full listen, if the album had ended on the song before Keep it, I'd have rated it a 3, the last 3 songs pull it down to a 2.
Made me run alright
Big up brum (even though I’m mentally checked out of there). Love come on Eileen but not feeling this album as a whole
oddly enough, at times the singer’s voice sounded like robert smith of the cure. but i just couldn’t with this one. this was pretty unlistenable in my estimation.
I tried... It's just not my jam.
While I appreciated the creativity and commitment to the horns as the driver, this didn’t blow me away.
I think Dexy needs to keep searching. With an over the top exaggerated affected way of singing along with way too much horns just for the sake of being horny, this one fell flat for me and at times was slightly annoying. For a better representation of soul punk horn sound check out The Specials. “Come on Eileen! You can’t get here soon enough!”
Spent most of this album trying to determine if this is a parody band. And the rest trying to decipher which band they were parodying.
This album was quite horny. Or I’m horny? Either way a 2.25. Way too long and doesn’t have the song that everyone comes for. Also love the first song he says “for god sake burn it down!” And then it comes out with some happy Billy Joel beat and horns. Haha
ugh
They are weird but not in a good way
Fav: Geno Least Fav: I Couldn’t Help It If I Tried The horns were the one saving grace of this, as it would definitely be a 1/5 without them. This album would win a 5/5 on incomprehensible vocals though
My first thought was it’s hilarious to pick the Dexy’s album without Come On Eileen on it but it was somewhat interesting. The album is all over the place, sometimes it felt like they were trying to be a more ska version of the clash other times it’s kind of goofy pop. I’m a sucker for the horns though
2.4 I mean, what are with the vocals. There was some viral clip of a live version of Come on Eileen on youtube where the vocals were laughable. This whole album kinda felt like that. Bands solid and the horns are worth listening to.
Seemed likable during the first few songs, but eventually became grating and the vocals deeply unpleasant at times.
I did a bit of additional research to further inform my review and noticed that Dexys Midnight Runners are an English band. This came as a surprise to me as none of the lead singers vocals registered as that language in my head. His slurred and overly performative way of singing was a detractor from most of this album and often had me wondering if this man rode the shortbus or if the recording booth reeked of Pale Ale during those jam sessions. The brass on the other hand was a nice change of pace from what I am used to hearing and while a bit obnoxious at times was the highlight of the album (its introduction in the 4th track did jumpscare me though). I feel like the faster paced, more poppy tracks worked better for me than the slower and more sappy ones as they were carried by the energy of the instruments rather than being harbored down by the lead singers moody mimicry of his native tongue (his backup singers thankfully help him seem legible on some tracks). I feel as though track #3 (The teams that meet in Caffs) was my favorite track by proxy of it being a purely instrumental song. The rating ends up meeting itself somewhere in the middle due to the Yin/Yang that is the pleasant instrumentals versus a lead singer with a baffling way that he has chosen to sing There were moments where I was nervous this album was going to devolve completely into Ska music
For starters I'm reading the lyrics to a bunch of these songs in Spotify as the song plays and it flat out doesn't match what they're saying most of the time. The prime example of this is There There My Dear. How can anyone sing along to this, nobody sounds like this. Geno - good tune, I can understand I bit more of what he's singing about and it's enjoyable. Instrumentals stood out a bit more too. I don't know what you'd call this kind of music on this album but it's really not for me. I gave Come On Eileen and The Celtic Soul Brothers a listen off Too Rye Ay. Better tunes than anything in this album by a long way. Took them 2 years to figure out how to write bangers.
That fucking stupid fucking brass horn. I couldn't enjoy any part of this album because of that stupid fucking horn section. I don't know if it's even horns, maybe it's saxaphones, or a trombones, or a trumpets idk. Maybe it's a sax and horn together but Jesus Christ it made this album unlistenable. Its just fucking shit. If this music even slightly represents living in England in the 80s, I understand why there are so many fucking stabbings. I would fucking go insane listening to this bullshit. I literally am unable to find something I enjoy about this album. The lead singers voice does have a certain 80s weirdly enjoyable 80s sound to it, but otherwise this band just sucks. I don't hate brass or classical instruments or jazz or anything like that. Just this fucking album. Also, even taking away that, this music is just shit. I didn't enjoy any part of it at all. This just made me want to start rating guns based on mouth feel. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered there's a fucking disk 2 on this album with 21 MORE FUCKING SONGS. It doesn't end. I did not listen to disk 2. I could not stomach it. This album is basic shitty drivvle. I have nothing smart or funny to say about it, it's just fucking garbage. The only time this music should be used is in a movie about England highlighting how much living there sucks. I have given this album 2 stars because it did teach me something about myself: I never knew I could dislike something so much.
No me gustó
Always sounds like someone singing down the pub to me.
Better than the other album, but still not good
The vocalist had an annoying voice, the trumpets were overused, and the songs were, for the most part, forgettable. Not the worst album I've heard in my life, but I definitely won't be listening to this band again. 2 stars
There’s some complexity in the lyrics but I couldn’t help myself from thinking “ worse British version of Chicago.”
The only song of them I had heard before was Come on Eileen, and none of the songs on this album are nearly that catchy. 2.4 stars
Meh 🫤
It's like pop meets soul music
Reel Big Fish meets The Cure.
Search failed.
I can't focus enough to listen to this which I guess is a review in of itself?
I like Come On Eileen as much as the next person, but it wasn’t on this album and the singer of this band can’t sing to save himself.. While there is a bit of bop to some of the songs, I would rather not put myself through listening to this again. Tbf, it’s not my favourite genre mix. Fave Track: Geno Rating: 2
Found the vocal style here quite off-putting, a la Talking Heads
I thought I'd love it because it's so British but nope, really didn't care for this
the most 80s of crappy 80s music.
Geno
A part from a few cool sax solos, this is pretty annoying.
This works for exactly one song
Quirky but not all that fun. The second half is better.
This wasn’t good.
This album was pretty unremarkable for me. Nothing grabbed me and kept my attention really. The singer doesn't really do it for me and the saxaphone isn't adding too much for me either, besides in Geno, which was my favorite here.
Do we really need these guys 3 times on here? The music is ok, but his voice for a whole album? Damn I’d almost rather listen to Morrissey. Almost
Gino is a banger and added to my library. I liked it when they trilled. Otherwise all the same.
Musically this was pretty cool, but there's no way I can ever take these vocals seriously man, it sounds like goofy karaoke or something lmao. And then they go and pop in a poem near the end where he sounds all cool and stuff. 2/5
The horns were great but got tired. The vocals were an interesting style but got tired. It was challenging to finish the album.
This dudes voice is AWFUL. Seriously he’s on par with Bob Dylan for me (and that’s really saying something). Does he try to make his voice sounds this bad? Is this something he’s worked at? He’s completely unintelligible and painful to listen to. The only reason this isn’t a 1 is because of the instrumentation, the horns and others were nice but my goodness his voice is PAINFUL. Not worthy to be on this list and should not have been forced to listen to.
Lots of horns / woodwinds. Didn’t do much for me cause it was a pretty standard 80s British album (at least that’s what it sounded like). I was starting to get into it during the middle half of the album, but the start and ending fell flat for me.
I love me a good horn section but this can be a bit excessive at times. Fun, easy listening, but it always sounds like they’re falling a little short of a pop hit they’re aiming for. Meanders around a lot
Gave this a couple of goes but it really didn't click with me. It's not terrible and there are some good moments but I could never hear this again and not really feel like I'm missing much. Geno is good.
songs range from boring to annoying
This is another one I liked more than I expected. I had this band in the category of one hit wonder, but this record-prior to the big hit-shows they had captured something going on in the UK at that time: the reemergence of soul music. No standout songs for me, but reasonably enjoyable to listen to.
This album would be a 1 star but there were occasional glimpses of things that were fun to listen to. Everything else was annoying. I think this album was the only one so far that I was mad I had to listen to it.
None of the songs stood out to me. I liked the instrumentals, but not overly memorable
Not terrible, but no thanks. Classic "How is this a top 1001?" Album.
Sometimes it sounded like Pulp if they were a 80's band. Pulp are better.
I'm gonna need someone to explain to me how this made the list. What is this guy bawling about?
That album was kind of pointless and annoying. I've heard worst, tho.
Extremely meh
The Northern soul and ska influences should make me live this album. But Kevin Rowland’s idiosyncratic vocal style grates quickly throughout the highlights. “Geno” is great and other tracks could shimmer and strut. But there’s no escaping Rowland’s deliberate squeaks and off-tone quips.
I didn’t really like this one much. Some of the horn sections were okay but the lead singer is super annoying. And I didn’t need to have two Dexter albums on the list, that’s for sure.
I know that I'd like this album better if I gave it a few more listens but many of the songs sounded very similar to me. I maybe should not have listened to the remastered version which included multiple versions of the same track.
This is a super unfair way to say it, but basically the entire time I was listening to this album all I could think was I'd rather be listening to The Pogues. I appreciate the attempt to meld folk with rock but it was a bit too poppy and the music didn't match the messaging of the lyrics in some cases to an extent that took me away from the song. It wasn't bad, but it just never really worked for me.
First impression is that his Voice sounds so desperate but the first song was good tho. The Direction they go with them Instruments is cool. I dont get along with his voice. It destroyed it for me. No need to revisit it. 1.5/5
Just didn't work for me
The crying toddler voice kinda works for Come On Eileen, in a jokey, fun way. But I can't take it seriously and definitely can't stand a whole album of it.
Pretty shit apart from 1 song
The uneven and often incoherent blend of genres. There are a few stand out tracks but overall, it is only ok as a collection of songs.
Not really my cup of tea.
midnight runners sind mdma verkäufer. isch seehr englisch sehr nice aber. sie hend gern blöser. und d blöser töned nöd soo guet und d arrangements sind sochli semi geil. the teams that meet in caffs. ich chrck langsam d bläser arrangements, sie wönd töne wie otis redding songs oder so. i'm just looking findi recht ass. mer ghört meistens nöd viel ussert de blöser. geno und not living in yorkshire sind cool find s album sehr schlecht abgmischt, d blöser sind viel z troche und z luut und am kevin rowland sini stimm treit z wenig zum soulig sii. come on eileen isch en riese banger aber er isch halt nöd uf dem album. git öpis zwüsched me zwei und me drü wells es paar gueti songs drunder het aber s tönt halt nöd super und chunt meh wie e otis redding imitation übere als öpis eigets. ich han gad nocher halt au aretha franklin glost und da sind welte wenns um soul goht.
Everything I’m reading is saying this is soul music but I think they’re just too afraid to call it ska 5/10
ELO mixed with the Cure mixed with 3rd wave SKA. Sounds pretty bad when you mix it all together
nice horns gets it a 2 i guess. lead singer whine more pls. im begging u to whine more right in my ears.
Not really my thing
One of those albums let down by the vocals. Kevin is an emotional fellow, I got pretty tired of his overwrought swooning. Can see the influence in Jarvis Cocker who does it so much better. Northern Soul - not my bag baby.
Like a pickle juice shot after a sip of whiskey, punk rock and soul music mixed together shouldn’t work, but it kinda does. Kinda. Maybe not the most successful examples of Northern Soul, but likely the first album exemplifying the genre. Forgive me; I just wanted ‘Come On Eileen’.
Takie średnie gejowe
Meh
Very uninteresting stuff for me.
Didn't know this band was trying to be The Specials.
Did not enjoy this one. The horns took me way out of it. They were so prominent, but also so flat, uninspired, and often out of tune.
nothing memorable for me here.
I guess you have to be in the mood for a horn section, I was not.
Before Too-Rye-Ay, DMR debuts with an intriguing sound that aimed to combine New Wave with Northern Soul. I feel with Too-Rye-Ay, they forgot about their roots to make weird music to dance hard too while on speed. This record is much slower and more soulful, but still features the distinctive whiny vocals and lush orchestral sound (mostly attributed to the horns and a groovier rhythmic drumming pattern). But just like Too-Rye-Ay, I feel like they're just too loud and obnoxious here, substituting form and structure for sensory overload and unexpected interjections in an attempt to entice the audience to sing and dance along. It feels cheap and clustered, but at least it clearly shows they're putting effort into it. There's a lot of potential here, and I've seen songs they covered (like "Jackie Wilson Said") that shows their music can be adapted really well if the songwriting was done right, but that's still very much lacking here. Favorites: Geno, Seven Days Too Long
5/10 not for me.
As a kid i grew up listening to the distinctive horns of Dexys, which is quite enjoyable, but I never liked Kevin Roland's voice.
Not great, bit chavy.
This was a weird experience. I didn't hate this, but I don't know if I'll seek this sound out again.
Not too sure why this one needed to make the list as their other more popular album was a bit better. This one sounded pretty similar with the Irish influence on it structure and singing. Some songs were catchy and worth listening again but the album overall isn’t that strong and feels like dated pop rock. 5.7/10
I never would have listened to a Dexys album if not for this project. I’d only ever heard Come on Eileen before. I liked the energy of some of the songs, but I couldn’t get into this album as a whole.
can't be arsed with Kevins voice at all and i'm clearly not as in to brass as this lot are.
Like taping a snorkel to your mouth and having music stand over it and shit into your throat.
found it boring tbh
Not as entertaining as their next album, and there is no reason to look for any hit or single on this record. It might be because I have listened to those albums in this sequence, because I don't think Dexys Midnight Runners is a band you can listen too often. The novelty is gone, so is my excitement for this band.
I liked it as bg music, but i like other songs by them better than what i heard here.
“Keep It” should have been the name of the album. This seems like an unremarkable album from one of those successfully insincere bands that every generation seems to relish.
Sounds experimental.
perfectly decent
No many feelings about this album.
Searching for the young soul rebels - dexys midnight runners burn it down - 2/5 tell me when my light turns green - 3/5 the teams that meet in caffs - 1/5 I'm just looking - 1/5 geno - 4/5 seven days too long - 3/5 I couldn't help it if I tried - 2/5 thankfully not living in yorkshire it doesn't apply - 1/5 keep it - 2/5 favs: geno 2/5
The definition of mid
Come on Eileen isn’t on this. Too many horns. I made it 3 songs.
This album has some real bangers, music wise. Good god are the vocals ghastly, though.
Ngawa.
Pretty fun, sounded a bit like another album I got on this list by The Style Council. Overall 5/10
What is up with this list giving multiple listings to one hit wonder bands? These guys should not have three slots when the only song by them anyone knows is Come On Eileen. Hell, that one song doesn't earn a whole slot by itself. This is pretty blah.
Mitähän tää olis, jotain ihan ok synä rocki poppia. Ihan medium ja porkkana kurkussa poikittain
Some tracks were fun. Had to listen twice to grow on me. But too often the guys voice was so squawky every other word
Konsepti välittyy, mutta illuusiota sen välttämättömyydestä ei synny. Myös musiikki välittyy - mutta se typistää itsensä konseptiin.
Eh. Not bad, but not necessary. Musically it's fun but we really don't need multiple Dexys entries on here. All the horns on here, they sound like Chicago but worse. Favorite tracks: Geno, Seven Days Too Long. Album art: Just some guys in a green filter. Not much going on here. 2.5/5
Klingt teilweise nach sterbender Katze...BritRock/Pop ist nicht meine Welt...
Generic
Once again it's the vocals that ruin it for me. Otherwise, it sounded okay.
Dexy's midnight runners made an album that doesn't have come on eileen? really? There was one song, idek which, that I remember liking but that was it.
Punk but meh
The horns, the accent, and the voicing are just too much for my head. Hidden underneath are some pretty decent jams and pretty intense lyrics. It is a real slog to get through to that level and that is a bit of a shame. There was maybe more here than I ever gave credit for--one-hit wonder issues. That isn't enough for me to actually want to listen again.
I never thought I’d become a Dexys Midnight Runners completionist
meh
This is the debut album by English pop group Dexys Midnight Runners. It is a new wave pop album that combines aggressive punk rock with soul music, and it was very popular in the UK. It was an interesting album with quite a lot of use of horns which I found both pleasant and overbearing at times. However, I liked the album and enjoyed my time listening to it.
I guess the band name is fitting cause this really does feel like 40 minutes of a manic high in an English pub in 1980. Singer is annoying. Don't need any more of this stuff. 2/5.
Fun, light rock. Not my thing.
Not my sound, not terrible, okay for background, but nothing gripped me.
Not a great sign when my favorite track on the first half of the album is instrumental. Why oh why did Kevin Rowland ever think that "putting that 'crying' voice on" was a good idea?!
Too much brass, too much sax, wake me up from the bad dream.
Oh for fuck's sake. Whoever sent out the memo to 80's artists to "sing" in that mopey-muppet-whinge-whine voice was a proper douchebag. Music here is pretty fuckin musical, then Dexy (or whoever he is) just SPLATS that mopey voice all over it like a fecal Jackson Pollock.
I should like this stuff, white boy soul, horns etc. Indeed a couple are quite fun, but his voice isn't great and I can still hear the insidious evil of Come On Eileen and too many ruined nights as a kid
annoying MTV vocals
Nothing special
Solid release, not my favorite but a decent listen.
Didn’t enjoy this one
I didn't really care for this album. The style of the music and the style of the vocals were a strange mix
Whiny slightly out of tune 80s. Not my thing.
I always thought Dexy was a one hit wonder and... I still think that.
There were beats that I enjoy, but his over-affected accent was a turn-off. And at first I was like - ah, a predecessor to ska, like the horns on every track. But then the further into the album, the more I found the horns distracting and taking away from the songs.
litt rotete - alt var ikke på spotify. men det var helt greit. vanskelig å finne høydepunkter - samme med lavpunkt. Usikker på bruksområder. det passer like dårlig til alt
Okay I guess. A bit samey after a while.
Supposed to be punk soul or something like that, according to some review I read online, but couldn't get into this mish mash of whatever it is.
I feel like I should've liked this more than I did. Perhaps I didn't give it enough attention what with my first day back at work for a week and a bit.
Unoteworthy album, save for a couple of brief tracks
Not really my thing
Correct... 2.75
Annoying
Listened Before? N This is interesting. Not really for me, but interesting. Reminds me of when I used to be cool. Pros: Early Ska and late Punk influences here make it a historical piece. Some of the horns are very nice sounding. Cons: The vocals are not particularly nice, and they're not enunciated well so I don't know what he's singing about. The slow songs are a terrible grind to get through. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Tell Me When My Light Turns Green, Geno
Didn’t enjoy the vocals, music was interesting ska
Genre: Blue-Eyed Soul 2/5 My second album of theirs that I’ve received throughout this project. Out of over 1,000 albums, I’ve gotten two of three(??) Dexys Midnight Runners albums in the book. Much like the other one, I was over this long before it finished. The horns in this are so absolutely bizarre, and so off-putting, the entire time. I could never feel comfortable throughout this entire project, as the horn flares were bound to jar me loose, and completely break me. I was laughing throughout a large majority of this. Although I would never listen to this again, and new wave is DEFINITELY not for me, and the enjoyment I got out of listening to this was not from the music itself, this album tickled me. It’s a complete joy bomb. But it’s way too much for me.
Not a fan. Sounds like pub music, but the lead singer was castrated before singing. "Keep It" has to be one of the most annoying songs I've ever heard and the fact that it's 4 minutes long is painful. My favorite track was probably either "Geno" or the instrumental "The Teams that Meet in Caffs", but I still wouldn't call them good, just above-average.
More varied than I expected, but hampered by a not very good singer. Geno is the best song, burn it down is pretty good, and the rest are fairly forgettable
I really dug the ska vibe. The music was nice and bouncy….but lawwwwwwd this album was long AND repetitive. I mean, I dug it for the first third and then I had to check to make sure that I wasn’t listening to it on repeat. I’d like to give it a 2.5, maybe a 2.75, but these is ruthless times. It’s a 2 for me dawg.
Tough! I hear that emotion, and a couple of tracks really pulled me in. But it’s not an album I’m going to toss on unless it’s background to a party, and even then probably not? The voice would edge into whiny too many times. Not enough mix in the mix… just not enough. But E for effort.
A lot of jazz notes happening here. A lot of horns... Not a lot of vocals? Huh. "Seven Days Too Long" - No means no, Dexys Midnight Runners.
not for me but not terrible
Kuuntelinkohan loppuun… joutu niin pätkissä kuunnella, että ei oikein mitään muistikuvaa tästä. Taisi paikoin olla ihan kivaa settiä, mut mitään ”oho”-fiiliksiä ei syntyny
It is an ok album. Nothing is really memorable on it. The group's best song (Come On Eileen) apparently is on another album. You can skip this one.
Nah this ain’t me
Op zich wel gezellig, maar kan er verder niet zoveel mee
Vleesch nog visch. Normaal hou ik wel van blazers, maar in deze band klinkt het echt alsof ze hun laatste adem aan het uitblazen zijn. Ongeinspireerd getoeter.
The vocals were pretty bad, the music was sometimes not so bad...Sometimes. Overall I would've been fine if all I had ever known from this band was Come on Eileen.
I know this band can bring the energy just from 'Come on Eileen' alone – this LP instead just sounds limpid and flat, even the brass/string sections sound as if they're just reading the sheet without much enthusiasm.
If Kevin Rowland didn't murder every song on this album with his 'singing' voice, I probably would've liked it more as the actual band and the tunes are generally decent.
I fail to see why this album made it into this list
I don't think it's bad. But the sort of weird shakey over the top vocals don't really do it for me. It's all a bit much at times.
Liatened through twice and really not for me, its all a bit sincere. Its also hard to place where it falls, its 'not quite' music.. its not awful by any means just not for me.
Monotonous in a not good way for me. Singular in ways that don't suit - brassy and whiny. Vocals just not good.
Some good sounds. Unlikely to revisit.
2/5 Annoying vocalist, decent music. Not an album i wanna listen to again.
Unintelligible British underground
It was alright. 0RS
It has a lot of the annoying singing parts from Come On Eileen and not enough of anything else I like to overcome it... and you weren’t kidding about the extensive horn use
Not my jam. Not into his vocals and the incessant horns. Their best with Come on Eileen was yet to come.
I strongly considered giving this a one, but it was a very unique album that sounded like a weird mashup of pop, ska, and soul. I'd add 'Geno' to a playlist but otherwise I'm not interested in revisiting.
The only redeeming thing about this album was the horn section, and I usually hate horns used in this way. The singing and song writing are putrid.
Meh
it wasn't that good :(
not my THANGGG
Could not get past the vocal delivery, so whiney and melodramatic. Also found the instrumentation rather irritating. Had to struggle through this one a bit.
Is ok. This album lands perfectly in the middle of the scale as I neither like it nor dislike it. Love Pt. 1 (Poem) is the highlightest of highlights as it's the only one I can say I actively liked.
Este álbum me sonó como a The Cure mezclado con Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (escuchen "Igual a Quien"). Not my cup of tea either
Not as much fun as I expected
Would have been a better album if it didn’t sound like the singer hit puberty while recording.
Not as good as the other Dexy's album. Too much trumpet, not enough revelry.
Die Mucke ist stellenweise mehr als ok, aber WAS SOLL DIESER BESCHISSENE GESANGSSTIL?! Ich kannte bislang nur 'Come On Eileen‘, jetzt weiß ich, was mich an der Band so nervt. 2 Sterne.
Not a fan-- thanks, but no thanks.
Some of the songs sound okay and then the big blaring horns come in and ruin them. Some of the songs don't even sounds okay before the big blaring horns come in and ruin them.
Not the worst thing I have heard so far, but I am starting to wonder why so many 1-hit wonders are being included.
Must be fun to play...not my music.
Weird. Almost cool, but not.
Yeah sure brass with rock is really cool and all, but good gravy the “singing” ruins everything about this
Soow deze kon ik echt ff nie hebben vandaag
Ass
Couldn't finish it. I think I'm doing real well getting through things but maybe it's the day, maybe it's the weather, maybe it's me, or maybe it's just the album, but I got to song 6 and just couldn't go on.
who tf selects these albums ....
.....nah.
I have a strong feeling about this record: hate.
Nah
I was waiting for the album to be great
Meh
Just because it has horns doesn’t mean it’s good. I really dislike Dexy’s 2.5/10
good
I hated this album. I cannot stand the singer’s voice, or how the horns sound, or how unremarkable the songs are. I couldn’t finish this one. It’s bad.
This album has a lot of good parts, but those long instrumentals are dragging it down in my mind.
it's challenging to listen to singing like this for an hour
The first song of this album starts with some radio samplings and then the horns and drums enter followed by... Goofy??? Holly hell, these vocals are insufferable and they are the same through the whole album. I usually like some extravagant singing, but this was too much for my taste. The four times I listened to this was miserable. Ok, but there is more than the vocals... except that everything else was also incredibly uninteresting to me. The rhythms are super standard and the horns weren't doing anything of my liking, so there isn't anything worth saving from this album for me. If I have to describe the record a little more, it is basically New Wave and Blue-Eyed Soul mixing mid and slow tempos, but I think in general the songs are very similar. This was an unbearable and annoying experience for me.
Awful vocals
an ok album
I really get what Kevin Roland is trying to do but I’m not convinced they really pull it off. The whole concept of channeling what we call northern soul in the UK is a good one and when it’s done well it’s incredibly exciting. It’s not that I mind the lo fi diy punk ethos per se; it’s just not the soul authenticity it pretends to be (those Stax backing musicians were known for being tight as a drum) but it has a charm if it’s own. The glaring problem is that Rowland’s vocal delivery is UNBELIEVABLY annoying, mannered and try-hard distinctive and it gets in the way of the songs. It was a common problem in the late 70s and early 80s but this is a particularly egregious example. I want to like this album but I just can’t get past the voice.
If there is a good thing about this album its the snippets of Purple’s Smoke On The Water before been drowned out by the dross of Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Music used by DJ’s to get a party going after the buffet and upon which I head for the bar. 1/5 28/11/25
★½
- For a band so chock full of horns and said to be some sort of blue-eyed soul band, they had absolutely no idea of what it is to "swing". In fact, I was shocked at just how much the music just plodded along, the rhythm section just hit. ting. on. ev. er. y. beat. ....... and then we get to the singing ... which somehow reminded me of that British thing that Morrissey does that just annoys the piss out of me ... this just did not hold up. -
Another band that deserved one entry at most. Dull sounding production and not really notable.
This is entirely unremarkable. Why in the fuck does this band have 3 albums on the list. I figured "ok they had a big hit I guess that justifies the album's inclusion", but that song isn't even on this record.
Can't get jiggy with this
TO ME, this a prototype of "Stomp Clap Hey". Anyways 1/5.
Lyrics are all about being trodden on. I like a more upbeat feeling.
….i was hoping for more
The singer needs to get another job and the horns need to lower there volume. Then all will be ok.
Not good. Like what an awful voice. I feel bad for the band members who are musicians and must've thought "we could really take off if we lose our vocalist!"
Geno and that's it.
How are there TWO Dexys Midnight Runners albums on here, who allowed this
Well - I found one good song on here, number 3, 'The Teams That Meet in Caffs' (whatever THAT means). It has NO VOCALS! The horns are great throughout, but when that guy sings ... fuggetaboutit. And Then there's another disc??? No way. Not listening. Can't make me. It sucks.
I kinda find this guy's voice annoying. I have the same sentiment towards the B-52s
Nah
Music - 3/5, vocals - 0/5
a lot of chaff, come on Geno, more chaff no thanks exactly the same feedback as given for their other album on this list, to be fair, this one was better, but the bar was very low "there there my dear" was alright, helped that it was the end of the album, this could have easily been an ep and would have been better 2
A few moments but mostly ones that made me think of other bands I'd rather be listening to. Far too much saxophone. Did not enjoy this one.

British 💔
‘Lads on tour' 80s pop? No thank you. This sounds like a major-key-only tribute band to The Cure playing cover songs with whiny vocals at a minor-league hockey game in Dayton, Ohio. And they didn't even have the decency to include Come On Eileen. Hard pass. 1 star represents how I feel about this particular slice of the 80s.
What do you get if you take an aura-less Cure and add an astonishing amount of horns? This musical abattoir.
It's not their fault they're British
shit and pisscore
sorry, can’t stand his voice
Bad
ANOTHER Dexy's Midnight Runners album?!? What in the Arcade Fire is going on here? How does one of the most notorious one-hit wonders of all time deserve not one, not two, but THREE records on this list? Clearly our master and overlord, Mr. Dimery, is the world's biggest Dexy's Midnight Runners fan. I'll bet he walks up to random people wearing overalls and asks if they can even name three Dexy's songs. I'll bet he sleeps next to a pillow with Kevin Rowland's face on it. I'll bet Mr. Dimery's password is something like "Dexys4EVA" or "RDlovesDMR". I'll bet that I never listen to them again.
Not impressed.
Man, I've seen people complain about Dexys being on the list because there's too many of their albums included... I'm complaining about this being on the list because it was awful to listen to.
Not my thing, just very slow and I don't like the singers voice.
no.
Just when you think there cannot possibly be more horns.... there they are again.
I don't understand the appeal. I think something is lost in translation as it goes across the atlantic. No matter how many times I hear he is a genius will convince me that this is good.
i listened to like half of this. his voice really only works on a novelty level for the length of ONE song (i.e. “come on eileen”). again, too many horns!!!
I really didn’t like this and stopped about halfway through because I got the gist. I usually love the incorporation of horns into most kinds of music, but these are so artificial sounding and also don’t have any added dynamics to make them interesting. It sounds like someone playing with consistent strong force on a keyboard set to the “horns” sound effect. It reminds me a lot of the style of accompaniment that was playing at my Hasidic friend’s wedding.
A third Dexys album, none of which are the one with Come on Eileen?? How?
>listened to one song >british >turned it off
I hated this album a lot. It shouldn't have been conceived. All songs on this album are on varying levels of bad. I can't believe I had to listen to "SftYSR" last night. This week has been catastrophic. I'll give "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" a rare 1 star rating.
Nope. 1
I'm already sick of one hit wonders with entire albums on this list, and this one doesn't even have their hit on it! Turns out they were big in the UK before that one, but that does not a must-hear album make. This guy's whiny voice is on another level. His voice breaks on just about every syllable and it's not endearing. And his voice isn't good otherwise. I wouldn't get back together with someone crying at me like that either. And then he has the balls to do an entire song in falsetto that made even MY throat hurt. Otherwise, this just seems like an album full of barstool sing-alongs, which is exhausting.
Listenable for nostalgia purposes. I don’t need to hear this again.
Annoying
Come on Eileen, this sucks!
Last I checked this band is a one hit wonder and their one hit isn’t on this album. 1 star out of protest for this album being dumb. Realistically it’s probably a 2
Someone needs to let the demon out of this boss throat.
Uuum
not great Bob
Here's me at a Dexys Midnight Runners concert: 'PLAY COME ON EILEEN AND GET THE FUCK OFF THE STAGE" Save Ferris did it better.
Not my thing but really it's the vocals preventing me from enjoying this record. The music itself is pretty impressive, the rhythms are catchy enough that this band shouldn't've been a one hit wonder. Oh well, added the one track with no vocals to the 1001 Experience Playlist
Shouldn't be on the list
Such an annoying punchable voice. Beyond irritating. They have three albums on this list. Why? Grating beyond belief.
Fucking seriously!?! “Too-rah-yay” was my album yesterday. There do not need to be 4 Dexy albums on this list. One star out of spite.
I thought dexys midnight runners were great on the young ones. This album though? meh. Also, am I wrong or are there multiple dexys albums on this stupid list? 1/5
i really fucking hate 70s and 80s british pop vocalists. i just hate british vocalists in general but this specific brand of british vocalist is really the cream of the shit-flavored crop. i'm sorry, there is some GREAT sax, organ and general instrumentation on this album but this oingo boingo ass mother fucker going yOu CaN't ShUt YoUr MoUtH completely ruins any enjoyment of the album i possibly could have had.
Why is this literal one hit wonder band included on a list of 1001 albums you MUST listen to? Is it for contrast, so that there are some lows to balance the highs against? This is the auditory equivalent of porridge made with water and nothing else. It really is damning that 3/5 of the top listened to tracks from Dexy’s Midnight Runners are just variations of “Come on Eileen”, a song that itself is just “okay”. I was already begging for this to be over by the third song so I could go and listen to literally anything else. The brass sections make me think I’m listening to ska music, but at least ska has that weird manic energy going on while the guys in cheap suits do weird dance moves. This is just slow, boring, and the lead singer sounds like he has a traumatic brain injury. It’s like a guy with Down’s syndrome trying to imitate Bryan Ferry. I just cannot imagine any scenario where I would go out of my way to listen to this.
Holy shit this SUCKS. This is worse than the Police by FAR at least the white boy reggae had some charm to it. This is just a fucking an English dude having a moan about everything like holy fuck. Nails on a blackboard bad, I thought am I over reacting? And listened to about half of it again before I gave up. Wish I stood firm on my gut feeling because I will not get back the 20 minutes I spent on the re-listen let alone the original listen. Refugee looking mother fuckers on the album cover are fleeing the fucking ravaged war zone that is this fucking album. I would rather listen to a FULL friendlyjordies podcast ep than this again it is that fucking bad. Truly ass, 1/5 (I miss Bon Jovi already).
This is terrible, why does the dude singing sounds like he's always very drunk?
The goofy vocals, horns and organ were too much for me.
Achei bem enjoadinho
Meh
I have never liked this band. I HATE their hit.
hate that stupid trumpet or whatever it is
I now see why they are a one hit wonder.
An album from Dexys with no 'Come on Eileen'! Honestly, nothing here grabs me :(
Don't get this album at all. I listened to it sober, bad. got drunk, still bad. got high even worse. I choked myself with a belt, as I was blacking out it something sounded ok.
I cannot abide this singers vocals. Oh my god I want to kick in my speakers. The music is fine but jesus, that singing!
I didn’t like this album. I give it 1.5 stars
They have songs other than Come On Eileen? I guess not.
Didnt listen to the whole thing. Im not in the mood + its boring
awful. just terrible. if i never hear it again it will be too soon.
Them again. I don’t drink enough to tolerate this bullshit. The author is just fanboying with this.
This is obviously not my style, but it sounded like a bad “madness” album to me.
This album sucks. They label it punk, and that's just so fucking wrong.
I guess I see what they were going for here? They're trying to mix the new-wave sound with an American-influenced "soul" sound, reminiscent of late-60s soul acts. This is especially evident in the overload of horns used on the album, which often are overdone and seem lifeless in contrast to American soul music. Also, to create good soul music, you gotta have soul! The lead singer's voice is nowhere near soulful.
Dexy is such a little bitch. The record sounds like an old panda doing a fanny fart in a cave. I can't get even get an inch of an erection out of it.
can't get into it all, like joke singing
Too heavy on the horns. This didn't do a damn thing for me.
Fell flat for me.
I gave it a listen and it just doesn't do much for me, sorry.
When the “singers” voice wasn’t being overpowered by the brass instruments you could barely understand him. Definitely a product of its time, and it’s a time in music that I really cannot stand.
Hardly got through it.
This fucking sucks, the vocals are annoying and the songs are boring, and even the horns fail to add something that sounds interesting
Jaa. Torvia. Ihan erikoista, mutta oispa saanut muustakin sisällöstä kiinni.
An album from a one-hit wonder, and it doesn't even have the hit. Apparently this is the first of 3 Dexys albums on this list! Overkill much? Anyways, the music is alright, kinda upbeat, it's nice that they went with a horn section, but the horns just sound so flat on most of the songs, like, they're missing that spunk. And the vocals, I realize the whiny crying type voice was all the rage in the 80's (ala The Cure, Soft Cell, etc.), it just, one or two songs are fine, but do you have to fucking weep over every song? Even the upbeat ones? I'll wait for one of their other albums where the band comes into their own a bit more to properly appraise them, I really struggle to see what makes this a must listen.
