Reviews (page 6 of 8)

The hit really stands out, making the other songs stand in the shade and feeling worse then they actually are.

Real 80 sound. Good

You know I don't know. It's somewhat better than I expected (esp. Love Is a Stranger). But it's just not my cup of coffee.

Annie Lennox, you wonderful human being. What a powerful voice brimming with authenticity. This might be the most 80s sounding record ever made. No analogue instruments, heavy synth bass, and a drum machine. I am not a fan of the more atmospheric tracks, but when the bass and synths hit hard on 'This Is The House' and the title track (best dance song ever?), the stars seem to align.

With coming back to

Maybe a weird take, but I'm not loving the higher vocal frequencies of Love Is a Stranger. Seems to rub my ear a little bit in the wrong way. Sweet Dreams though: good track, nuff said. Jennifer is also cool and compositionally it's a pretty interesting track. Some good instrumentation on This Is the House (horns, decent bass line, etc.) which I was pleased to hear. Works well despite the weird Spanish vocals. Really liking the vibe of This City Never Sleeps - simple, but effective. OK album overall, but "historical value/impact" aside, I'm a bit underwhelmed. The good/great tracks aren't enough to carry this one for me. 3/5.

very 80s for me i love the synths of course but definitely not something i would listen to in general

Weird but good!

I was ready to dislike this album because synth pop is not my cup of tea at all. But it was quite an enjoyable and fun listen, it sounds fresh and old at the same time with some good tunes.

was aight

Not really much on here worth listening to except the title track.

This album is interesting. It's not particularly my kind of music but I didn't really dislike it either. I really only know Eurythmics by the title track of this album, so I didn't know what to expect. I was surprised/hopeful based on the first track because it was giving me strong LCD Soundsystem vibes. The rest of the album kind of dips, aside from a few standouts. 'Jennifer' was my favorite track by far. Standout Tracks: Love is a Stranger, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Jennifer

I liked their music when I first heard it in the 80s when they broke out with this album, their MTV videos, and beyond. As the years have gone by, I have a deeper appreciation for just how good they are, this album is, and what they (and Annie Lennox as a solo artist) did in the ensuing years. Her voice is extraordinary, and what makes her stand out for me is her unique style and very interesting sense of melody. I also really, really admire what she's done publicly with her star power. She has long been a strong advocate for LGBTQIA+ dignity and rights, and as someone with family members and close friends in that community, that means a lot. We need it now, especially here in the US, more than ever. Back to the music -- it's a fun album that also has a depth of layers we don't always hear in pop records. I don't usually listen to electronic-based music like this, but it's great stuff!

- Only ever heard the title track before - Thought the rest of the songs were good but nothing incredible - Good album but not one of my favourites from the list - Fav songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), I Could Give You (A Mirror), Love is a Stranger

Liked: I've got an angel Sweet Dreams Jennifer

Nothing crazy here tbh. Upbeat and fun but nothing really stood out.

Album was a fun listen. Not something I’d listen to all the time but something you can kind of throw on in the background and just float on top of all the synths. This album signals the beginnings of synth pop and which is pretty cool to hear. Don’t think i like it enough to give it a 4 but there’s some good tracks here for sure. Heard before : sweet dreams Favorites: the walk, Jennifer, sweet dreams MMM: STEP AWAY (step away) WALK AWAY ALL I WANT IS THE REAL THING

It was fun, it was funky, it was creative, the production I found very playful and silly and cool FX, and yet I barely enjoyed myself at all, and that might just be my personal taste the music. Yeah, overall, it was way more interesting and fun and inventive than I thought it would be, but I wasn't super crazy about it!

The bones are good, thinnest possible skin stretched over them. That and the decision to keep the title track inside work. Variation is evident underneath, fine machinery that doesn't connect together but has familiar synthesized visage.

This album felt like it was just a step back from being amazing, but it just didn't quite get there

This is a terrible mix but the songs are fun. Sweet Dreams is a killer hit. The rest? This Is The House finally has some low end and that makes all the difference. This City Never Sleeps is an ambient track, so if you want an extended postlude this is for you. I'm not enthralled by it.

I wanted to like this more than I did. Annie Lennox is a great vocalist and the title track is a certified banger, but most of the songs just left me saying "meh". I wish the quality of the music matched the vocals, that would make it a 5. As it is, I give it a 3 for a classic song, a bunch of so-so ones, and great singing.

I've never been a huge fan of the title track, but I did end up lightly enjoying the full album. Pretty decent new wave project. 3.5/5

Good spacey 80s pop. Surprised this one has yet to make a grand reappearance to the masses

The lead single off this album is a household name at this point. Given the popularity of that track, I was expecting there to be a couple other standouts on this album. Unfortunately I found the rest of the offerings to be pretty run of the mill. That's not to say any of the songs are bad, I did enjoy my listen, to me this is quintessential 80s synth-pop. But beyond the title track I found nothing particularly memorable about this offering. Fav Tracks: I Could Give You (A Mirror), The Walk, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)

Kind of a boring sandwich. Sweet Dreams is obviously great but the rest feels like filler around it.

3/5 Some solid tracks, mostly easy to listen to, strong vocals. But then there's some songs mixed in that definitely go against the Geneva Convention, like This Is The House

- expected to like it more - sweet dreams has never been my favourite (overplayed) but I like other eurythmics songs. This was meh for me

once again with one good song.

There was a huge difference between what I enjoyed and what I didn't. 3 overall, personal favourites are sweet dreams, jennifer and I could give you a mirror.

Some really great songs. Some really crappy songs.

I like the hits. But further this just didn’t grab me that much. 6 out of 10

Solid pop music (from my youth), and Annie has a great voice.

Very 80’s sounding feels this album is carried by its title song, but that’s probably enough for it to make the list.

Good but not great

- Feels like they played every instrument they could find - They would kick ass in a European dance club - So experimental, I dig it - Sweet Dreams is a certified Banger™️, This is the House is funky

Sweet Dreams is definitely the standout, the other songs feel more relic of the 80s than something that I would listen to on a normal basis

AL has a first-rate voice and there are a few quality pop songs (starting with "Sweet Dreams"), but all the ultimate '80s synth vibes and feels ulimately undo the record. It is what it is, which is very much ensconced in its era.

This seems to be an album very driven by a synths and a drum machine with poppier elements. The songs so far seem to all be quite similarly paced, which I don’t like. Of the first few tracks, Sweet Dreams and The Walk are the standouts. The first real change of pace came with Jennifer followed by This is the House. That 4 track run is good. The rest of the album is mediocre. With the exception of Monkey Monkey.

Despite the budget album art it's surprisingly okay but can't say much more than that.

Surprised me this. Last half pretty big. Sweet Dreams is a tune for the ages. Dave Stewart doesn’t get enough credit. Surely the most ‘club’ of their contemporaries. Sot I Could Give You A Mirror Sweet Dreams This is The House Home is Where The Heart Is Baby’s Gone Blue 3.5/5

Sweet tunes are made of this

Decent record, I don't think any of these are their best songs though

Everybody knows the classic Sweet Dreams, but I didn't know the rest of the album. Overall fun, 80's bops.

Found myself humming "Love is a stranger" all day, it's the best song on the album I think. Sweet Dreams has the best synth parts though, the layering is excellent. Filler material is a bit thin but it's a good album.

A work on progress. You can hear how they are working through developing the sound they will become famous for. I've always been a big Lover is Stranger fan, a superb track and of course the mind blowing Wagga Wagga influenced Sweet Dreams. The rest is just unremarkable, none of the song resonated nor caused me to go back and re listen etc. Still a testament to a band on the move to great things.

The song Sweet Dreams was one of the 80’s great dance tracks. Hard to believe it was the 4th single released from this album, because it’s far & away the best track on it. Only the opening cut, Love Is A Stranger, is in the same ball-park. For me, The Eurythmics were a terrific singles band, but their albums often missed the mark, as does this. Their cover of the Sam & Dave classic, Wrap It Up, written by Isaac Hayes & David Porter, & supposedly featuring vocals ( I can’t hear them) from an old favourite of mine, Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, is less than thrilling. A couple of years later The Fabulous Thunderbirds, featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan’s brother, Jimmy, did a much grittier version on their album Tuff Enuff. Any way, nothing else on the album really excited me, but, as I said, the title track is exceptional.

All the synths!

Pretty good.

Hot take: it’s like they knew “Sweet Dreams” would be a hit so they didn’t put as much effort into the rest of the songs. There was nothing really memorable about any of the other tracks. They all stand in the tall shadow of “Sweet Dreams.” My older coworker, an 80s music aficionado, disagrees with me about the album, so maybe you had to be there to appreciate it.

Apart from the title track, the rest sound quite dated now. 2.5

Dexent synth-pop. I like the songs with wind instruments

Great album with memorable moments. Classic title, of course. Makes me wanna listen to some Blue Oyster Cult for some reason. Solid.

This is the house….it’s a little thin. That seems the more apropos lyric. I adore Sweet Dreams but these three stars are for that and that alone. The rest of this is also-ran synth-pop blather.

Its a solid 3 Not that interesting for being a electronic album but Annie is a godess

I like Eurythmics, I don't love them

Decent. It's got the hits for sure, but other songs fall flat.

6.3/10 would listen again: maybe heard before: yes note: some good catchy songs and some that gave me a headache the general vibe of the songs could be catogarised as rhythmic pulsing

Not my sort of thing but I am grateful it isn’t greetings from LA 4.5/10

The title track is one of the most potent and iconic songs of the 1980s. The album as a whole is an unusual mix of new wave/blue eyes soul that while interesting is very rooted in its time. Unfortunately much of this album lacks the timelessness of its title track

Pretty good but not a favorite. The songs were long and there was a lot of repetition. Some good songs too though. Sounds like a score for Bounty season 2. My favorite was This City Never Sleeps.

Solid euro new wave synth album. Sweet dreams is the standout but a lot of really catchy basslines and synth textures if you like 80s stuff like me.

Good but not great, with the exception of 'love is a stranger' and the peerless title track. Annie is one of the oddest humans, and Scottish too, but overall this is just too 80s for me

It was okay

Overall pretty enjoyable -- somehow never knew Annie Lennox was in the band. Anyway, "Jennifer" was a the big standout, loved that one!

It was ok.

Pleasant pop

I hate to say this, but other than Sweet Dreams the song, this album was not good. A few of the songs were alright, most were just too weird for me.

I was excited to see this album pop up because I’ve always considered Sweet Dreams to be a top tier song. But the rest of the album was a little disappointed. That one song basically carries the whole thing

Didn't really care for it

Best Song: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). Call it nostalgia, but it feels like there's a reason this is the song people instantly sing along to when it comes on, be it on the car radio or at a bar. Honourable mention to "Wrap It Up" for being the safe sex anthem I never expected. Worst Song: Jennifer. I'm really not looking for such a ballad in the middle of these other dance tracks. Overall: Pretty groovy throughout, with soulful vocal performances on top of some decently dance-worthy beats. Would have been rated higher with some better editing, as the album didn't need to be this long.

the beats are really cool, can definitely see how it’s influenced todays music, some catchy tunes

not my sound, but nice

3.5/5 I liked it. One dimensional but good catchy tunes unique. Sweet dreams

Some good stuff for suuuure, but the hyper 80’s sound… not sure it works for me as a whole this time

A little disappointing. Two great classics but no hidden gems for me. I think I’m good with their greatest hits.

Not, in fact, what sweet dreams are made of

Zeer pop-achtige new wave.

Good jams, songs all go hard

Well to state the obvious, the title song Sweet Dreams is a monster hit, easily one of the top 10 songs of the 80s I recon. Its only surpassed by their even better hit - Here comes the rain again. Annie Lennox's voice simply soars on Sweet Dreams. However, some of the other songs like Wrap it Up, Somebody told me and This is the house are painfully 80s sounding. Cringe! Fortunately there is some minor redemption with Love is a stranger and the atmospheric, This city never sleeps. 5 stars for Sweet Dreams but its pulled down by the 6 weak songs on the album.

The titular song is amazing. Past that it is just mediocre still gets the bump to a 3 because of the legendary song.

Way too 80s for me

Cool album- title track is best. Some notes: This is my house- sweet bass line City never sleeps ostinato groove Home is where the heart is / interesting how rhythms weaving through eachother. I hear some influence on 90’s industrial rock

Cool album! I usually don’t like electronic/dance music much because the tones are too sterile and the songwriting is lazy, but I thought this album was really thoughtful and creative and the tones were nice and warm and sounded like the 70s. Cool synths and drum machines.

Can't hear Love is A Stranger now without thinking of the LCD song that massively ripped it off (I Can Change). They're both great though, the original, and the pretender which took the ball and ran with it. Never listened to them beyond the singles but their value is obvious. The big synth sound is great. Probably wouldn't listen again given I don't have the nostalgia pulling me back in, but no doubt it's a decent and important record.

Not mad at it. Has some catchy jams

Decent nu-wave/electropop album, Annie Lennox's distinctive vocals complimenting the squelchy synth sounds

It was good background music for the crossword

I really like the title track… The album opens with love is a stranger and it’s a really boring pop song where the only interesting bit is the bridge, really disappointed. I’ve got an angel does have a really interesting rhythm to it and her vocals performance is good the lyrics though are poor. Wrap it up is kinda good everything is pleasing I really like her vocal performance across all the songs so far but that guitar solo was really Really poor. I could give you (A mirror) is the first song I actually thought worked in all areas will (hopefully) go back to this song! The walk is also fairly pleasing and another great track! Sweet dreams ( are made of this) is perfect pop song! Jennifer is really drab and dark but it’s solid. And after 4 good songs this is the house does nothing for me really. The penultimate track somebody told me again does nothing to be fair like everything is nice but nothing is special. The album closes on a decent high though with the city never sleeps it’s repetitive as hell but it works in the songs favour. I don’t hate it but it’s honestly a disappointment. 3/5

I feel like this is a weird inclusion on the list. If there's gonna be a Eurythmics album on the 1001 album list, shouldn't it be "Touch"? IDK - there are plenty of contemporaneous synth pop albums that I love, and of course I like the title track as much as anybody else, but this doesn't do a whole lot for me as an album. Great moments: I do really like the Sam & Dave "Wrap It Up" cover and the trumpet solo on "The Walk"

I've always enjoyed the hit song on this album, but had never listened beyond that. Was a little slow and underwhelming. There was one song that I did enjoy, Jennifer, that reminded me a lot of Daniel by Bat for Lashes.

I liked the middle where music felt like it was going places more. A little too free form in terms of directions it could go for me.

A few great timeless songs. However, overall not my style.

Love is a Stranger - always known this song, but didn't know that this was its title. Great track. Next few songs not grabbing me on first listen. I've Got An Angel might benefit repeats. The Walk was a single but I'm not familiar with it. Sweet Dreams song is a classic that feels catchier than much of what's come so far. All very synthpop, songs built around bass synth lines.

Great 80s album. 80s synthesizer sound.

A few great hooks, but an excess of synthy cheese overall. AL has a rich, resonant voice and she's a dynamic vocalist. But there's a lot here that feels dated, even terminally time-boxed in the '80s ("Wrap It Up" being exhibit A). Synths like this have a very near expiry date or statute of limitations, meaning this plays today as neither nostalgic art song or particularly durable pop. 2.8 / 3

Lekker vrolijke popmuziek uit de jaren 80. Heerlijke sound. ***

Fairly typical early 80s album of some killer singles and a bit of filler. A fairly average early 80s album, despite Annie Lennox's voice. It still sounds contemporary and fresh though. Can't think of Eurythmics anymore without thinking of the Matt Lucas/David Walliams 'Rock Profile'.

When it's good it's GREAT. When it's not, it's ehhhhh.

Another 80s synth-pop album that I thought was actually rather decent, with or without the huge, iconic smash hit contained within. Not mind-blowing, just a solid listen. A textbook 3-er.

The album doesn't maintain the quality of Sweet Dreams throughout, but it's still very good. I found my foot tapping throughout. Such a good voice

This album was huge when I was a teenager. I certainly heard the big hits hundreds of times but this is the first time I've listened to the album. It's a grower and I appreciated it more on the 3rd listen. As an album it is good with most tracks being interesting even if you can't sing and dance to them as much as the hits.

Heavy synth was off putting at first, but after the initial system shock the album was enjoyable enough

I really like There Must be an Angel from later on, but this is pretty good.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to.

Sweet Dreams og Love is a stranger eru réttilega sígild lög.

Liked the vibe, however, it wasn't anything ground-breaking. Sweet Dreams cannot carry it all. Pleasant, but insignificant as a whole. Highlight: Somebody Told Me PS. If half-stars were accepted, it would receive 3,5.

samo sweet dreams nie wystarczy.

Ngl I was expecting this to be one of those 80s albums with one big single and a load of filler but this was pretty darn good It definitely sounds of its time but is really fun and uses the big 80s synths to great effect. Songs like Wrap It Up and This is the House are so upbeat and boppy, and the more laid back Jennifer is a lovely, sensitive moment after the big single. Lots to like here

Went down nice and easy. Decent.

It was alright, relatively harmless, I wasn't dancing too much. Yes, Sweet Dreams is of course memorable, but maybe just due to the general exposure?

Interesting new age 80’s synth. Had only heard Sweet Dreams before. Enjoyed it, but probably wouldn’t listen to it again often

The title track Sweet Dreams just sounds so amazing and fresh even after all this time, a colossal sound with that pulsing synth bass and dancing chords, along with those sweet pure vocals of Annie Lennox, like cut glass. And there are some other gems here - the opener Love is a Stranger is a moody atmospheric number with an insistent bass and Jennifer is a really cool blissed which feels like it’s from a soundtrack to some obscure Eastern European movie. A few tracks fail to hit the mark - This is the House - but there are more hits and misses, though, overall and a decent album.

This is the first time I listened to Eurythmics in album form, and I gotta say it gave me more than I expected. These are very good and pleasant sounding songs, but one can argue they are all overshadowed by the big single. In some respect, I will agree but the deep cuts are still jammy for the 80s. I had a fun time!

Sweet dreams is an absolute bop, the rest of the album was ok.

Love 80s new wave but somehow I've never really given Eurythmics albums a dedicated listen. This album is pretty fun. The title track is obviously a total classic.

Decent but kind of drags on towards the end

I generally liked what Annie and Dave did outside of Eurythmics, but you can’t deny the influence of this record

A couple of classic tracks but a little inconsistent. Still Annie Lennox's voice is one of my favourite ones out there.

Sweet Dreams is a top tune, rest of the album not so great

I once read an opinion that Annie Lennox could sing the phone book and it would sound great, and I have to agree. 3 stars.

A solid 3 because of Sweet Dreams. The rest was just ok.

The theme song is now a classic!

3.5 stars. Decent early 80's synth music with strong vocals.

Other than the title track, the album was meh. The music was really well arranged and produced. For me there is no real attraction to what is going on. The music is not bad just not what I would put into "the mix" of daily life.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would - probably because I've only been (over) exposed to their massive hits before. There was some interesting synth-pop in there

Stiekem vond ik dit best goed.

Not bad.

Leuk om eens gehoord te hebben. Alleraardigst.

Surprisingly I enjoyed it more than I expected. Thought I would hate this. Not really a fan of the title track because it was way too overplayed at some point in my life. Now I find the song fine. I would say the second half of the album is a bit better, but still I wouldn't call it an all time great. Another OK one

80’er synth pop, sweet dreams, rytmisk, catchy

The whole album was like a lesser version of Sweet Dreams. Like if you distilled it down and weakened the things that make Sweet Dreams such a great tune. 3.5

Solid album but nothing more. No song really stood out and in the end I didn't feel like this was a revolution or reinvented the wheel

I'm so conflicted about this album. I absolutely hate eurotrash synthpop. Utterly despise it. But. The songwriting isn't half bad. Unlike most albums in the genre, these songs actually have something resembling a structure and I appreciate that. Not enough to give it more than two stars, mind you. It's still bloopy, blippy, zip-zap nonsense.

it's nice.

Pop con sintetizadores. Un megahit. Se me ha hecho bola. Ni fu ni fa.

There are several really excellent songs on this album that are worth the price of admission on their own. But overall, the quality is uneven, with a mix of styles that's all over the place. The saving grace of this album is of course the brilliant Annie Lennox. Lennox's vocal ranges from authoritative to soulful and is pretty flawless. Musically, the songs have some interesting elements here and there, but half the of the songs are fairly unmemorable. Fave Songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Love is a Stranger, Jennifer, The Walk, I've Got an Angel, Somebody Told Me

This surprised me. It was chill. I expected the synths and drumbeats and that it would bore. Instead, it felt like a long car drive; winding turns and interesting changing views along the horizon. I'm currently sitting in the airport awaiting my plane. I forgot I was deliberately listening and just let the album set the mood. The finale was especially poignant as crowds rushed to their flight. Sweet Dreams and This City Never Sleeps stood out—the former as the hit and the latter as the culmination. Other than that, I don’t know that I could recognize distinct songs in the way that I can’t remember all the named rural townships driven through on the way to the city. The drive was lovely though.

Fun. I had listened to any of it before aside of Sweet Dreams. My favorite tracks reminded me of the Talking Heads at times.

3, it's fine

I don’t really like the Eurythmics. Overplayed at the time however, the album wasn’t too bad. Listenable 3*

Classy pop

It's good. But the whole album doesn't hold up to the hits, which are great.

Love Is a Stranger and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) are 4 or 5 star songs in themselves. I really wanted to give this a 4 as an album, but every other track on the album falls so short of those two tracks it highlights the disparity between them. I love the synths on all of it though, they still held up even with their 80s-style.

The biggest thing this album had going for it is Annie Lennox's voice. Man, it is just incredible. The singles definitely benefit from her incredible vocals, and so do the other tracks. But one they start to get experimental, and her voice gets lost in those 80s synths, it's very hard to focus on the songs themselves. "This Is The House" is REALLY annoying, for example. Along with the bonus tracks on the 2005 edition, yikes. So yeah the singles are indeed what make this album. It reminds me of a few albums where the single is the best part of the album, and that's why they are the singles.

Another album with a female singer who can really belt it out. But is that enough to hit a 4 or 5? At least this album had some variety going on in the music accompanying the vocals. Some cool synth and then some weird stuff. I do love Annie Lennox's vocals and Sweet Dreams is a classic, but the rest of the synth/new wave stuff just wasn't good enough to be more than average. I enjoyed the album, but not enough to go back for more listens.

I hoped to like this more, given how good the title track is - a classic, deservedly so. I walked away feeling that the album is generally - I'm not a huge fan of 80s electronic pop so I guess it had to get past that first. Favorite tracks: I've Got an Angel, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), and This City Never Sleeps. Everything else was ok, it just didn't hook me, even after several listens.

It’s really not my thing but I can see this would have been massive in the clubs at the time. 80’s synth pop at its best

Enjoyable, pleasant enough - some great tracks, Annie Lennox has a fantastic voice... but this album was not really something I would return to repeatedly, I think.

Ah...Annie Lennox is a great vocalist... 2 good songs, the rest are rather poor. (6/10) FT: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Love Is A Stranger

Ever since being indoctrinated into the lore of Sparkes I've never been able to hear 80s synth the same.

Pretty good. Not everything is as great as their major hit.

A weird and boring electronica fiddling with interesting synth riffs, a decent opening, and a kickass title track.

I remember when this album, and the video of the title track came out. I've listened to Eurythmics' Greatest Hits album and Lennox's Medusa Album. This was my first time listenting to Sweet Dreams. Eurythmics found a way to get electronic instruments to be a worthy back up to Lennox's great voice. "Love Is a Stranger" and "Sweet Dreams..." are my favorite tracks. Overall, the rest of the album is okay. I didn't find any new favorites or hidden surprises

Initial thoughts: it’s giving psychedelic love child of Abba and Fleetwood Mac fav. off album: I’ve got an angel

ledwo ledwo

Very 80s! Short tracks that can sometimes sound a bit too similar to each other. Some standout tracks but a lot of filler.

Very 80's. Seemed to improve as the album went on

Great album for background music

I enjoy weird synthy shit! The Eurythmics make me think of Friday Night Videos when I was a little kid - Annie seemed so exotic to me!

Some great vocal work and interesting instrumentation. “Wrap It Up” is a 3 minute long innuendo (but at least it’s safe innuendo). Nothing quite lives up to the masterpiece of the title track, though. Fave tracks: “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” “This Is The House” “Love Is A Stranger”

Buen disco, agradable

Some great songs on this album: Sweet Dream, Love is a Stranger but I think Jennifer stands out as my favorite. The Walk was enjoyable as well. Great sound. 3/5.

Decent… but didn’t blow me away!

I'm surprised that I didn't enjoy this album as much. It's got some noisy elements I wasn't expecting and didn't really care for. I enjoyed parts of songs, but didn't find a song I enjoyed until almost halfway. Favorite tracks: "Sweet Dreams", "Jennifer"

Not bad, if it's the eurythmics vibe you want, you got it. But it's got a few of the classics too, pretty good!

Not my style but I enjoyed it still. It's definitely a landmark album for the genre and and the future of electronic/pop music Favourite Tracks: Sweet Dreams, Wrap it Up, This is the House

Love is a Stranger is a fun, breezy, synth pop start. The darker, new wave tone of most of the album isn't for me. Sweet Dreams is, of course, a great classic dance track.

Pop con sintetizadores. Un megahit. Se me ha hecho bola.

Not sure how I feel about those guttural grunts on this first track. They're really throwing me. Everything is sort of good setting for Sweet Dreams to take off somewhere in the middle. But none of this sticks with me.

A real game of two halves - the first side is fairly anonymous synthpop, whilst the second veers off into more interesting and experimental realms. The title track and 'Jennifer' are the standouts, but there's a lot to admire here, not least of all Lennox's voice

Sweet notes were made of these...who am I to disagree?

Sweet dreams is a timeless classic, the rest of the album is not. The spanish song ia abysmal.

really cheesy, as i expected, but not unpleasant to listen to. 6/10

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - canzone - non può non piacere. Quindi promuovo a 3.

If anyone ever asks you what the 1980's were like just play this album. It's all you need to know.

Sweet Dreams is obviously a great song, I just couldn't be bothered with the rest of it. I know that's very lazy of me, but what are you gonna do?

Fun album that's super easy to listen to.

Ko sam ja da se ne slažem?

Very 80s synth-pop. Eurythmics were everywhere with their distinctive sound. After almost forty years on, the sound has not aged so well and while Sweet Dreams gets the glory, Love Is a Stranger is a stronger song that was a fave growing up.

Title track fantastic, rest forgettable

Great for cooking to

Entertaining 80s pop rock. Title song is excellent but there are other enjoyable songs along the way. Very heavy 80s synth club feel which dates the album but possibly the best of its kind. 6.7

The album is slower than the hit that names it. Its ok but no really amazing

Some cool spots, also some meh spots.

The mood of the album was a little darker than I originally expected. Felt like there could be some contenders for Mindhunter episodes.

Dense synth sounds. Annie Lennox has an incredible voice. I remember these cats were really weird on MTV but still being intrigued. I guess that's why the Utah Saints sampled the hell out them. Love is A Stranger -- sets the tone for the whole album. Angelic and mechanical at the same time. Good stuff. I've Got an Angel -- sounds like hundreds of other 80s songs out there. Even has the chicka-chick-ah going on. Not a fan. Wrap It Up -- old Sam & Dave song getting the new wave treatment a la Bronski Beat. I like the Fabulous Thunderbirds version better. Not bad overall but a little tedious at times and not as innovative as I thought the Eurythmics would be. I thought I'd hear some far out synth-driven weirdnes and there a lot of that but of boring stuff too. Some cheesy sounds that don't work.

Great album.

classic but i hate to hear this one like literally everywhere. could anyone make this stop happening? (just asking lol)

Superb! But not so keen on this remastering. Annie's wonderful voice seems to have faded into the background, disappointingly

Eurythmics' breakthrough album is a deft mix of electronic thrills, new wave chills, and sultry R&B, the latter supplied by Annie Lennox's warm tenor.

Decent. Thought there might be some superb hidden gems on here though...

Classic 80s sounds. Honestly they sound a bit generic after a while. Hasn't aged that well. Some songs are pretty cool though. This is the house id a definite highlight. Sounds like an Talking Heads song.

New waves fun album

Very 80’s and for once that proved to be a good thing.

Struggles to get close to the bug bit in the middle. Solid 80s synthetic.

I honestly didn't like this as much as I was expecting to, especially considering how good the song Sweet Dreams is. It's a really cool sound, just not many of the songs stuck out in my head. 2.5 that I'll round to a 3 because a 2 feels too low Saved: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Jennifer

Saved Prior: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Saved Off Rip: Love Is A Stranger Cutting Edge: I've Got An Angel Overall Notes: A lot more artsy than I was expecting having known Sweet Dreams beforehand. Much better after a couple listens, but nothing especially stood out other than Sweet Dreams, a deserving smash hit.

Yeah alright I dunno if I’ll ever listen to any other song again apart from sweet dreams

Weird, but the good kind of weird. 3.5

Pleasant

3.2 - Aside from the towering “Sweet Dreams”, this is some fairly forgettable 80s synth pop. Lennox’s voice is a powerhouse. Songs are constructed around a groove and tend to get repetitive.

not bad

A great throw back album, full of great memories.

Interesting, and not to discredit the fine song writing skills of Stewart and Lennox, but other than the radio hits, was pretty bland.

Classic & classy 80s synth-pop. Nice for a one-off listen.

Semibängeri Helt bra kasaripoppia, men int kanske i min smak

Funky!

Couple of bangers, overall a 3 though

Cool listen. Sounded a bit one hit wonder.

It's fine. Sweet Dreams and Love Is A Stranger stand out, the rest is fine but not catchy enough to excite. Nothing is really bad, but nothing really great.

Good beats but a bit repetitive

80's electro-pop with a dark edge. I love that the music video for the band was banned in the US for Annie Lennox being a "Transvestite" out to confuse the youths.

It's good but there's a bit too much synth for my liking. The titular song is an obvious highlight here.

pretty ok

Not really my thing. I enjoyed the two radio hits, they seemed much more sophisticated and better produced than the rest of the album.

Me gusto

This was good but not as good as other Eurythmics albums. Obviously got an ultimate class A banger on there but one top banger does not a banging album make.

OK - obvs sweet dreams is a banger, rest is a bit meh but still fun

Had sweet dreams

3/5. A lot of the vibe reminds me of early Lou Reed? Some of it is really obnoxious, some is absolutely slammin'.

80s new wave/electronic before electronic music was a thing. "Sweet Dreams are Made of These". I do like Annie Lennox a lot. this record is fine enough I guess.

A pretty sweet album. I'm running out of things to say.

Didn’t enjoy this as much I thought I would have

Much better than I remember

Enjoyed it.

It's only Sweet Dreams that stands out, and to me it's a great instrumental done wrong by the vocals.

For synth-pop, it's surprisingly not terrible, even if I wouldn't ever choose to listen to it. Can we talk about the title track? Why are they torturing the pronunciation of "this" to rhyme with "disagree" and "seas," when they can just change the word to "these"? There's no antecedent anyway, so it's not like there's a grammar issue here. Just change the word, weirdos! Best track: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This [sic])

I didn't really get a chance to listen to this all but I give it a shrug 2-stars -- why not. I like that one song....

Not my taste, kind of redundant but the last song was chill af

Not a big fan of this genre of 80s pop, I always found it to be very dated despite influencial to what exists now. Sadly this album is a typical exemple of this genre, including maybe one of its biggest staple. So not a bad time, but yeah not my cup of tea.

Outside of the hit I didn’t find this too enjoyable.

not BAD. just not very interesting to me besides the rlly popular songs

Title track is far and away the best on the album. A few songs had nice sections, but overall this wasn't a good album.

sweet dreams & then lots to be forgotten! This is the house is bad bad

An album carried mostly by one song. The production is good, but it is lacking quality and the album starts to become repetitive. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Love Is a Stranger is LCD Soundsystem's favorite song. Wrap It Up is an odd choice for a cover. I do like Annie Lennox. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) is the hit and dwarfs everything else on the album. I always thought it was Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These). Annie Lennox could have been Jessica Rabbit's singing voice. I bet they love the Talking Heads. Adding some stupid elementary Spanish over a song is never the right answer.

I absolutely adore the title track, but his is not as good as I was hoping. A lot of the songs are pretty unremarkable, other than the bonker synths.

I was going to ask if there’s another album with such a big gap between its best track (you know which one) and everything else, but ‘Jennifer’ (Johnny Jewel does Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere’?) saves this from that crown. The rest of it? Stewart clearly knew how to pick a synth tone; if only he took the time to figure out what the hell to do with them.

one of my least fav from this era lol

The Apple Music bio for this says this the title track is “fiercely iconic, it threatens to render the other nine tracks redundant.” Yeah it does. Jennifer sounds like Cocteau twins. If I could give you a mirror is a gem too. Listen the issue here isn’t that the other 9 songs are clearly overshadowed by the largest cause it happens all the time. The reason I couldn’t get into this is it is so samey I like when I can feel when a song is gritty and sweet dreams has that but it also feels really ambitious. The back synth and drum are weird in an amazing way. The background vocals they are used best here and on love is a stranger. I know this is babies first Alt pop but the staying power and more so influence come from one song that was imitated and played to death so it doesn’t feel as sweet but that’s not the songs fault. In the context of the whole record it doesn’t go dark enough until the back half and by that time it feels so forced this city never sleeps is a better poem than it is is an ending track. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ all in all I wish it was more itself and played into the strengths more than doing the whisper sing over and over

i dont really love the title track here and as a result the rest of the album sounds the same to me and i dont really like it that much either 4/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)

Apart from the singles this is surprisingly mediocre 80s fare...

IT came from the 80's! Like, Gag me with a spoon. The 80's synth is strong in this one & its disappointing because there is good songwriting here. Just Synthy 80's cheese. Annie Lennox's voice is fantastic. It's far too RAD for my tastes. 2.5

This is a decent album, but it never really rises above that for me. The songs are rhythmic and have that early 80s energy, but overall I found the vocals, instrumentals, and lyrics pretty uninteresting. The title track “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” is especially annoying to me — that repetitive synth riff and Annie Lennox’s dramatic delivery just grate after a while. I can’t stand it. The rest of the album tries hard to sound like stylish new wave, but it mostly comes off as very commercial pop with some synths slapped on top. It promises something cooler and edgier than it actually delivers. A couple of tracks are okay as background music, but nothing really stuck with me. The whole record feels like it’s reaching for that cool, artsy new wave status but stays too safe and poppy to get there. It’s not terrible, but it’s massively overrated in my opinion. One of those albums that had big commercial success but doesn’t hold up as strongly as people claim.

We listened to this in the car while driving down for a family long weekend. Started with promise, chats around parental interest in Annie Lennox, both wondering how many tracks we’d recognise through passive exposure. Well it turns out hardly any because the album just faded into the background without really sitting right. It became a vaguely annoying background hum.

I don't even particularly love the title song, and it's a shame this is so thoroughly unremarkable because I do enjoy some of their later stuff. It's too aggressively eighties.

2.1 Probably amongst my least favourite of the 80s synth pop to appear on here. First half was pretty bland pop, last half went a bit experimental and didn't land very well. Can see why they're a one hit wonder. Decent track but nothing else here to bother about.

classic case of one song being astronomically better than the rest.

There is a reason Sweet Dreams is the only song to be widely known from this album.

Bit of a drag

Aside from the title track, and perhaps one other song, I did not enjoy the music. Vocals? Yes. Music, no.

Wanted to like this as a full record, but really all it has is a few big hits / edgy catchy synth pop songs, and the rest is fairly bland filler: dull.

All I know is that if you told me “Jennifer” was by some bullshit Brooklyn band in 2011 I would 100% believe you.

I was convinced I’d way away changed but it’s just very fine.

Title track excellent, others not so.

Good attitude and vibe. Sweet Dreams is a classic song. Didn't love this as much as a lot of people but it's good enough.

So many of the songs just feel like they are a waste of time. They just made me feel anxious. This has the ingredients to be better than it is. I only enjoyed Sweet Dreams.

Strangeish

Not a fan of Annie Lennox at all.

Mostly forgettable and too repetitive synth pop. The only string of tracks I truly enjoyed was Mirror, Walk, and Sweet Dreams (even though I'm kinda sick of this song with how much it's been overplayed). The rest isn't awful, but just nothing that sticks out. 2/5

Only really liked the eponymous track

Boring as sin.

Eurythmics are allegedly a very influential band but nobody knows any other song by them besides the one. You know which one I mean

Aside from the haunting harmonies at times and the bullet proof title track, the lot of this is chud filler. Probably won't come back to this.

The title track is obviously a banger, but the rest of the album just didn't do it for me.

I do not see myself coming back to this album besides the title track.

441/1089 - Another of the many albums on this list that are just one notable song surrounded by a ton of mediocre stuff.

It was okay

It sounded catchy (which prevents it being a 1 star album) with that one hit especially, but I won't listen to this again. 1.5/5

Sweet Dreams is a pretty good song. The rest of the album is dreadful. Cold and repetitive.

Like one good song.

God this drags on

Enjoyed the highs too many forgettable tracks though

Nope, not for me.

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to really get behind this style of music. What's here is very moody, but not in a way that evokes much of any response from me. Even the massive titular hit fails to do much for me outside of being recognizable. To be fair, if I heard any of the other songs out of the context of this album, I wouldn't be sure I could recognize them at all. Just leaning a bit too heavily into the synth side of synth pop. Highlight: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Lowlight: This Is the House

I really wish I could've rated this album higher. I tried real hard to separate the visceral aversion I had to the Eurythmics as a kid, from the album as it stands today. I don't know what it was back then that made me dislike them. However, as it stands today, I'm definitely still not a fan. Annie Lennox is a pretty good lyricist, and I respect her more now than I did back then. However, this album just does not age well for me. Over-synthed -- like much in the 80s to be fair -- but to a fault. I really don't feel much for this album at all. It's not a disaster, and it clearly had critical appeal, but I am not sure I would call it 'influential' and I'd never find any tracks from this in my playlists.
