Reviews (page 7 of 8)
I just don't get it.
Title track obviously good Not really my kind of music A lot of the songs dragged on
Havde vist god høje forventninger til den her! Fordi titelnummeret pt en kæmpe banger. Men resten var lidt stenet
I almost feel like "Sweet Dreams" was one of the least interesting songs on this album. It was way more varied than I expected.
Only good song is
Yeah ok some interesting bits but not having it really
2.5
I tried. I really did. I gave this three full listens, but I just couldn’t like it. Sweet Dreams for being the most popular song here was never one I particularly loved either. There are parts I liked here, like the outro to Jennifer, but as a whole it seemed lacking.
When this popped up as my listen for the day, I was excited to revisit the Eurythmics. I always remember really liking the song “Sweet Dreams are Made of This.” What a let down. This record either hasn’t aged well, or maybe it just wasn’t ever all that good. Annie Lennox has a special voice and it’s a pleasure to listen to her sing (& she’s cool as hell), but the music here is overly synth’d and flat. So disappointing. Also, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This is still a good track (again credit Lennox’s vocals), but not nearly as great as I had remembered.
This one was a bit ol meh. There are three scenarios I seem to observe for albums that have one monster hit I am very familiar with (Sweet Dreams in this case) and know little else about it: the rest of the album is either surprisingly and good, the rest of the album is similar and good, or the rest of the album is forgettable. This was an example of that third one.
I was excited to listen to this but the rest of the album just didn't live up to the title track
A bit ropey outside the singles
I don't care about the Eurythmics but this is not about my taste. Some interesting and complex song arrangements that fit Annie Lennox's voice perfectly. But the final result is a mixed bag. Some good stuff (Jennifer is a standout) but some of Dave Stewart's arrangements are terribly dated and poor.
The album is kinda like the vibe of this song.
one-hit wonder
Never liked this.
A lot of filler and no real substance.
At first I was disappointed with the album, but by the 4th song, they stopped sounding that bad. Not my type of music or something I feel like putting on, but I can see the musical innovation and experimentation in the songs. I already had Sweet Dreams saved before this, but I dont think I'll save any others
Half are chart hits, the other half could be. Essentially pop, trivial magnolia pop.
I want to like this but it leaves me a little cold
A very dull and bare-bones synthpop album. The title track is pretty good, but one of my hotter takes is that the Marilyn Manson version is better anyway.
This truly was of its time. I enjoyed some of it- after all, it's nigh on impossible not to enjoy the sound of Lennox's voice. However it didn't really resonate with me so much.
It was okay
proof positive that synth and pop can be good Apart from the singles the rest are almost forgettable - The album has some good moments, but the vibe is somehow not quite right. mostly as they sound the same
I'd only heard Sweet Dreams and it's a good song but I don't need to hear it again. I normally don't care for 80s electro-pop but this wasn't too bad. Love Is a Stranger is a pretty good. 👍Love Is a Stranger
I wanted to like this more because I do love synth-pop. And of course the big hit is great. But none of the other songs really moved the needle for me. Sad.
Honestly I was expecting to give this a higher rating, but upon listening....it's really not good. Annie's vocals are outstanding as always, but the music is terrible and boring. Really only the one good song.
Songwriting hat was, erklärt warum z.B.
One third in: I kind of expected this to be just Sweet Dreams (and a bunch of filler) but it was pretty good actually. I don't particularly care for synthpop, and I don't really care that much for Sweet Dreams either..but yeah I can see why it's a classic. 3/5 After finishing the full album: Turns out there's like 1/2 hour of pretty good synthpop and then 40 minutes that feels like it goes on forever and keeps going "monkey monkey"...? what the hell is the rest of this. Gets marked down for just really flopping hardcore for too long.
The title track is good enough to carry this to 2 stars, even though the rest blows
Let’s leave this album (excluding sweet dreams) where it belongs… in the 80s… far away from here.
Didn't do a lot for me.
There's a reason nobody ever plays any of the other songs.
Slower than I wanted :( Love the song of the same name but the rest were .. mm whatever i guess?
Reminds me of my ma, she fucking loves this.
I love the 80s………… but I was a bit disappointed by this tbh :(
interesting era of british pop this is
Other than the title track this isn't anything special.
Thought I’d like this more than I did
Besides one very good song, the rest is pretty meh, I thought the songs would be more in line with that or a bit more uptempo but not really
2 head lugu ja ülejäänud on sellised... kesised ja unustatavad. Võibolla oli new wave'iga katsetamise aeg lihtsalt selline.
Woof. Huge hit mixed into a surprisingly lesser quality album.
Some amazing songs but nothing else landed with me
2.0 (42:21, 10 Tracks in 1983 format; 2005 bonus adds 6 tracks, 72:10, second album) New Wave, Pop 2nd album but Eurythmics were unknown after their first album, in many ways this was their breakthrough debut album. Radio hits everyone knows, not much else. Everything after Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) (sic - I know it's "this", always know this, but "these" rhymes well with "seven seas" so why Annie?) was boring. Hated Jennifer and This House. Don't need more synth pop in my life. Thought it would be a 3 but the back half irked me. The 2005 bonus tracks (while technically I don't include tracks not on original release in my rating) broke the 2 vs 3 tie they were all garbage including, dare I say, a Lou Reed cover.
Title track is the only thing worth mentioning imo
2.5 I have never really listened to the Eurythimics before. First few songs were quite a bit more pop-y than what I would have figured. Beside Sweet dreams nothing really stood out to me as to something I would go out of my way to listen to
Noisy crap, out of tune, what the hell is this, SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THESE, back to the weird stuff okay, not too bad but whatever.
"This is the house" reminds be a talking heads song but I can't remember which one :(
one decent song o/w boring
It’s got its merits I suppose, but it ain’t for me.
i don't care much for the rest of this album, which is mediocre synthpop with sparse texture in the tradition of The Human League, but the title track is classic for a reason and always puts feet on the floor. though outside of that context, listening alone on headphones makes you realize just how little there is to it. not a bad song, just one that needs the right setting. This is the House is also worth noting. a lot of life in the groove there. deserves to be one of the 1001? certainly a landmark single here, but as a whole album? the magic 8 ball says "better not tell you now". i guess we'll have to put a pin in this.
It's really just the one song.
Not my kind of music.
I was surprised by this album and expected to love it. I expected more songs to be like the well known track Sweet Dreams. However, to me it felt like the titular track was from a completely different album with a different feel than the rest of the tracks. The musicianship on here is fine, but I really don't see myself returning because it didn't do anything for me.
It was largely tolerable as background music until it got close to the end, at which point I couldn't stand it anymore. It was never an album I was going to love given the genre, but even so it was too repetitive to be this long. Even the title track, catchy as it is, works better as a one minute snippet on a soundtrack rather than a full 3 minutes. 2.4
boring and forgetful. the title track is so much better than anything else its shocking, that songs a banger and everything else is just... dull and grating?? i don't understand
Based on the title track, I expected to like this a lot more than I did. Sweet dreams is iconic… The rest was not for me.
Nah. Literally nothing here of value but the title track.
Sweet Dreams is still awesome but everything else.....meh
Sweet Dreams is timeless. The rest of the album is pretty much 80's synth pop to me, which I don't really care much for.
The title track is one of the most annoying songs of all time
For the most part quite forgettable. Perhaps under the right set of listening circumstances could be something more [see recommendation by other author re: high].
Not for me
Not bad.
Usually, I'll revisit an album if I've only heard it a handful of times, but I think I'm going to have to make an exception here. Sure I like the title song just like everyone else does, but there was absolutely nothing else of note on here, and I'm not spending 45 minutes reconfirming that.
It was something all the songs sounded similar like I didn't know what track was playing except Sweet Dream
Wasn't really my think and thought it was a bit boring.
Not a fan of the '80s production, and some of the songs seemed half-baked. The title track and Jennifer were cool, though.
There’s only one good song
Probably the first album of theirs I have listened to. Couple of classics. Easy. Wouldn’t play the whole thing.
Sweet Dreams Are NOT Made Of This Am I missing something with this or...? Incredibly boring album I have to say. They have 1 banger and that's it Maybe it's a generational thing 🤷🏻♀️ 2 ⭐️
Sweet Dreams is such a cool song musically, but it has always bugged me that it’s like two sentences repeated OVER AND OVER AGAIN - have a cool enough vibe and you can get away with ANYTHING Listening to the rest of this album made me realize I didn’t know a single other Eurythmics song. Annie Lennox has a crazy cool voice. Love is A Stranger is takes chances vocally and I like that. I don’t partially like the use of the drum machine, but her falsetto is nice! I realize upon finishing the album that there’s probably a reason I’ve only ever heard one song from them.
I hate that this is criteria i have to consider, but it gets 2 stars for sounding like music made by actual professional musicians. But i hate 80s music as a general rule. I could give you a mirror and Jennifer were almost enjoyable and I've learned to tolerate the title track through exposure, but I'll be happy but to listen again.
Soooo very very 80s.
The title track is an undeniably great pop song and stands head and shoulders above everything else here. Jennifer caught my attention too in fairness - it left me wondering what a Sisters of Mercy cover of it would be like. Everything else washed over me really. It’s a perfectly good album but not much more than that…
Off the cuff remark: I suspect if it wasn't for the sight nostalgia of Sweet Dreams as radio fodder when I was younger I would dismiss this 80s synth-pop but nostalgia or not a good pop song, most of the rest listenable with distinctive vocals of Lennox but.... Standout track: Sweet dreams Revisit?: mmm, unlikely
Repetitive and forgettable. This is the House is especially cringe. Title track is a banger!
I only know the one song and the rest starts to sound really repetitive.
The title track is decent; the rest of the album is similar but worse.
not really my style but fine for what it is
Never been a big fan. Annie Lennox has a great voice but it's all a little too "new wavey" for me
Better than I thought. I like the darker stuff like track 2nand of course the title track Track 3, 8 and some other synth riffs reminds me of new order Solid dance pop but not something I’d go back to often
A bit of a slog. Other than Sweet Dreams, not a lot to get excited about.
Everyone knows the title track, most people love it, including me, so I had no reason not to be excited or at the very least feeling like this would be a great time but... no, instead is the kind of 80s synthpop I find less exciting, the stuff that's milder and more restrained in the synthy parts, less punky and more pop which SUCKS because the big song's darker sound really makes you think it would be different... and it isn't sadly.
“Sweet Dreams” is one of my all-time favorite songs, but, the rest of this album was…nothing I’d care about revisiting, honestly. Would not be on my personal 1001 albums list.
I wanted to like this album. Thought it would be a lost gem. But no. Not my thing. Many songs fell flat.
The title track is a "guilty pleasure" of mine, but the rest of this album is pretty poor.
Meh. That one song is cool. Otherwise . . .
better than expected…the hit is the shining jewel though
Solid MEH, wouldn't want to listen to this again, but not bad, just boring.
There was actually a couple of things on this I didn't totally hate
Banal. This is not an impressive album, not even the title track. And the rest is just an excuse to be bored. Sweet Dreams is a great hit/song. But the rest, yikes!
Interesting. I thought I would like it more. I don’t think I like 80s electric pop. 4.1
There are a lot of tracks on this album. Not sure they are all necessary. Quite a lot of it sounds like incidental music to a Miami Vice Crocket introspection scene. Dick Cuthell's trumpet on The Walk is a highlight.
V prvi pesmi kr fusajo, v drugi tut mal, nevem sploh kdaj tako musko poslusas. Sleepy synths and sweet serenades. The hit kinda seems like lightning in a bottle (2.5/5)
I was never the Eurythmics biggest fan. Annie Lennox, although she has a great voice, used to freak me out a little. And Dave Stewart was just a bit weird (How he got off with Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey is beyond me). Their early hits Sweet Dreams and Love is a Stranger got very tiresome very quickly. This album is listenable, but uninteresting. I rank Eurythmics as substandard compared to Soft Cell, Human League, Heaven 17, Depeche Mode and most of their other synth-pop contemporaries.
this is just okay. very same-y all the way through
Sweet Dreams (Are Not In Fact Made Of This)
Listens: 1.5 Standout tracks: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), This Is The House With the exception of the album title track, which I have absorbed through radio osmosis and the general zeitgeist, I haven't heard of or listened to a single track on this album prior to today. Pop music is my second least favorite genre, and I'm very picky about what pop music I do enjoy, so this really isn't doing anything for me. I don't know what the cultural impact of this album or the band is, and I don't particularly care.
Bis auf zwei Lieder wirklich nicht gut…
As expected, every other song is not very good at all. Gotta love sweet dreams are made of this though
there was one good song and I'm not even sure it was good, everything else was actively bad
Was hoping for more from this, sweet dreams really seemed like a cut above the rest of the album. Some of the other tracks had decent bits in isolation but it never all came together. Didn't know Annie Lennox was in the Eurythmics, so I learnt something from this. Won't be back though.
Sweet Dreams is intense and memorable, a classic for a reason. Love is a Stranger is alright. The rest largely fade. Jennifer is particularly boring. Lovely voice (Annie, not Jennifer).
Way too 80s for me. Sweet dreams is a pretty iconic track I guess, but not for me
2- Stars (4/15)
I have never really liked synth pop, but Annie Lennox has an amazing voice. The album opens strongly with ‘Love is a stranger’ but quickly dips to mediocre 80s synth pop. Obviously’Sweet Dreams’ offrrs some respite and is a true classic. Within the other tracks it feels like there are traces of other similar music of the time. ‘ This is the house’ put me in mind of the Human League but with Annie on lead vocals(and ‘Pop Musik’ by M). Over the album serves only to reinforce my view that Annies best material was as a solo artist
I really wanted to like this but was surprised to find a lot of it was just a bit dull? My very official and technical ranking system ended up on two songs I really like, four that were fine I guess, and four that I just found uninteresting. Should be a 2.5 really, but I'm plumping for 2 because I can't see me listening to 8 of these tracks again. 2/5
Feel like I was forced to “like” this when I was a young teen by MTV. Don’t really like it then and nothing has really changed. Annie Lennox has an amazing voice. I respect what they were doing. But it’s not my favorite music. I do like the 9 1/2 Weeks song at the end. 2.85
Meer van verwacht. Sweet Dreams blijft geweldig
They made Sweet Dreams and then a bunch of boring copies of the same song
Didn’t love it in ‘83 and now it’s slightly worse.
Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: ♥️🎭👩🦰 Production (2018 Remastered): 🤷♂️😐👍 Music: 😴😖💩 Rating: 💤(💤)/5
One hit song and the rest were forgettable.
I was expecting to love this, because the title track is such a great song. There are a couple of bright spots, but a lot of it is just not for me.
Annie Lennox has a fantastic voice and bold personal style. These songs are too simple and boring to live beyond their time, however. The title song is the only one you need to hear.
This makes me want to re-watch Halt & Catch Fire (whose original trailer featured the title track). This album does not, though, make me want to listen to it again. Lots of bleeps and bloops and twinkles and breathy singing. Just not into it.
Not for me.
I forgot to listen to this album and honestly don’t feel like it
80's pop. Too many synths and keys for my liking.
One good song
I was disappointed while listening to Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by the Eurythmics. I really like Love Is A Stranger and the title track but unfortunately, the rest of the album was very underwhelming. I kind of liked The Walk but that was the only other song I cared for here. Kind of bummed honestly. This is a 2 rating for me. 2/5
Besides nostalgia for the title track and a foggy memory of watching the video on MTV. I won’t be listening to this album any time soon, and I doubt I will ever find the reason to. I do love some synth pop like Gary Numan or OMD.
Sweet Dreams is a 5, a timeless classic. ahead of it's time and work as good on the dancefloor in the 80s(i assume) as it does today. Just modernize the synths and it vibes with the young people. very few songs that translates as good between generations as this one The rest is .... very dated, uninspiring and very typical 80s. really don't stand the test of time as insanely as Sweet Dreams. allot of the tracks feel like they are inspired by other tracks from the era but more forgetable. Sweet Dreams 5/5 The Rest 2/5
While I generally like 80s New Wave, this is not the best of it. Outside of the title track, which is great, this album had little else I enjoyed.
2/5 sweet dreams is the only good song
One hit wonder. Sweet dreams is a great song though.
The title song is pretty catchy. Not huge on everything else. Will I listen to again: 1%
Good album, not only dancing songs, and some great vocals.
The past couple weeks have had me feeling like a big softie, ratings-wise. Luckily this shitshow came along to remind me what it is to hate. Mostly “2” songs + “sweet dreams” = potential 3, then minus 1 point for “this city never sleeps” = back at 2
Love her voice. Synth pop is trash.
Unexpectedly bland aside from the popular stuff.
title track is of course a classic. songs run out of steam after the one idea/chorus/hook they were built around loses novelty; when that novelty fades, the screws come apart, exposing how unremarkable a lot of the songwriting actually is: generic pop with some flashy coating. still, occasionally works—even if unevenly.
2/5. I do enjoy some dance-pop but not all of the songs on here make me to get up and moving. The title tracks and some of the hits slap but otherwise, it feels mostly like a filler album with the singles. Fortunately, the singles do stand out so it's an entirely terrible listen but it is not a great album overall. Best Song: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), The Walk, Jennifer
Annie Lennox is cool and has a good voice, and there are a few fun ideas. However unfortunately I hate synths when not used judiciously bad maybe just hate the 80s?? Overall found this pretty boring.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).
I was actually surprised there was one other track I enjoyed from this album aside from the obvious, main title track (which is the sole reason this one-hit-wonder of an album made this list, per usual). Still not worth the slog through the rest of this album though
Another one of these classic albums that is actually just a classic song. You could say one or two nice things about the other tracks, especially accounting for the fact they're doing something new at the time, but it's all done way better on Sweet Dreams.
One classic and a lot of stuff that hasn’t stood the test of time
It's exactly what you'd expect the band behind "sweet dreams are made of these" to sound like
Well, only the song "Sweet Dreams are made of this" is really good. The rest is more or less shrapnel...
Maso
Decent, high twos for me.
It’s a synth pop record masquerading as new wave. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s definitely not my thing. Everyone knows the title track, it’s a classic, as an aside though, I think the Marilyn Manson cover is better. But the rest of the album is almost entirely unknown, and I think there’s probably a reason for that. My hypothesis is that it’s because most of the rest of the album is just boring. Regarding the title track, who the fuck pronounced the word “this” as “these” they’re two totally different words and frankly I think the title and lyrics should be revised to read “these”. I probably won’t ever listen to this again. 2*
I’ve only heard this bands’ singles over the years, and was never that wild about them. After listening to this album, my opinion hasn’t changed. This just isn’t my thing, I’ll give it two stars.
Pretty bland 80s techno/pop album aside from the title track.
Ugh. Love the synths. Cannot stand annie’s voice.
Ever heard of a one hit wonder? I just don’t like rock synth. They all kind of sound the same and it’s outdated at this point.
I like the high at the beginning and half way in it shows the blues influence. His Smokey voice is really whiskey/ cigar vibe
2.5
Remember that feeling when you’d buy an album and it only had one good song on it
p512. 1983. 2 stars. Not their best work by any means - see "be Yourself Tonight", "Revenge" and "Savage" for that - and outside of the singles there's a lot of filler and half baked songs that outstay their welcome. Set against that, we've got excellent production and THAT voice.
Eighties synth-pop with a couple of hits making up the filling, sandwiched between some more experimental tracks that mainly fall flat. I can't bear the title track, but I know mostly because it has been played to death for the last forty years. I think 2 stars is fair here, as there's not really much I like about this album, but it does have a tiny bit of artistic merit, and it wasn't too long.
Chat am I a jaded hater? I’m just getting this feeling that I won’t remember anything off this record other than the title track - which does deserve its props. Sweet Dreams (the song) seems like the type of song you write/record and instantly know you’ve got something big on your hands. I must also recognize it’s staying power, zedd just recently played it at his show. It’s still recognizable and sleek. But outside of that…there’s nothing new to grasp onto. It’s just 80’s music with nothing more than a slightly dark facade to it all. Carried by the title track, if there even is anything to carry here
Had a hard time going through the album, not my kind of music.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Would never have thought to seek out an album by the Eurythmics; they are a singles band in my view. The experience of listening to this hasn't changed my mind. It's pleasant but instead of this I'd rather listen to an 80ies station for an hour or a Best of Synthpop compilation. I'd probably also hear the title track but also all kinds of stuff that kind of sounds like the rest of this album but is better. You know, Smalltown Boy for instance.
I know the popular song but didn't like the rest as much as I thought I would.
Completely listenable, much of the album feels like side pieces to the main event which is the title track. Eurotrash, I don't need it. Possibly sounded better at the time.
The title track is amazing. Hands down 5 stars. If this were a list of 1,001 songs to listen to before you die, then its inclusion is a given. Jennifer is also good. But what is up with the rest of this boring album? I was expecting something great but was left with meh. The album gets a 1 for the disappointment, but the title track bumps it up to 2.
This is the House is the only track on the album that actually attempts anything different, and it is the only good song on the album. 50 minutes of the same synthesizer riff otherwise
Laulajan tavassa eläytyä on jotain vaikeasti sulatettavaa. Aineksia on johonkin toimivampaan.
Too much 80's cheesy synth. not a fan. Does have "wrap it up" which made me laugh. DNF
I expected this to be as cool and line filled as the title track. But it ended up being boring as hell. Had it not been for Sweet Dreams it would be a one star.
Synth pop. I thought I would like it a lot more than I did. Even the title track fell flat for me.
Not my favourite style of music, and one song cannot carry an entire album. so 2 stars or D+.
Wasn't my thing back in the day and haven't changed my mind
Two great songs but I did not really like the rest of the album.
Pulsing synth pop. Often bouncy. Annie Lennox has something unique about her vocal style that I can’t really identify, and it doesn’t quite move me. Certianly not displeasurable and some catchy songs and interesting synthy parts, but it doesn’t excite or inspire me. It just didn’t leave much of an impression.
Title track is a classic, but the rest is just droning vocals with cliche 80’s synths.
Hmm genuinely thought I would like this more. Much like in the 80's though, I found myself wanting to skip over the filler to the main songs.
Only the title track is memorable
I realize I'm listening to this 40+ years later, and everything sounds quaint after 40 years, but I feel like I'm listening to a Yo Gabba Gabba episode. Sweet Dreams is good, so 2 stars.
Sweet Dreams (are made of this) is another one that's just too 80s for me. Very capable musicians and skilled careers, a couple of very well known songs that stand the test of time, but otherwise a lot of stuff that didn't and that I don't care for, indulging some of the 80s sounds I disliked most. 2.
Title track is an absolute cracker, the rest is quite forgettable 80s stuff. I struggle with this kind of music, it always feels really dated so almost anything that you hear from this era and style is either the odd single that absolutely has stood the test of time or the rest which absolutely has not. The single elevates it from a low 2 to a high one, but it's still a firm 2.
Cool for 1983, carried by Sweet Dreams - overall meh
Everything that spotify played after this album were better than the album.
Obviously the title track is iconic, but this as a full length project left me disappointed
80s music just has never appealed to me. titular track is a banger of course tho
Mids
Annie deserved better than Dave Stewart.
One song made the album a little better.
2 the title track is the only good song. New wave just ain’t very good
Outside of the title song, I had a hard time liking much about this album at all. I'll listen to the single again, but nothing else.
I wish I liked this album more than I did, but aside from the obvious bulldozer of a title track, I found this record oddly boring. I could say the tracks were way too long, that there’s a little too much ‘80s-era synth experimentation, or even that there’s very little material here with hit potential, but that’s not what struck me as odd, because I typically like new wave despite these issues. Really, Sweet Dreams just gave me the sense that Eurythmics are a Greatest Hits band. So, in a strange twist, this boring, mid-level new wave album with one stellar song and a couple decent but forgettable cuts made me explore more of their discography, and I discovered that, while their next 3 albums are all better than Sweet Dreams, Eurythmics are, in fact, a Greatest Hits band. That said, Annie Lennox’s Diva? Pretty fucking great! Should be in the book over Sweet Dreams, easily.
This was fine I guess. Not really for me.
2.5/5. Super 80s, not very enjoyable.
Below average, 2 stars
prefer the Marilyn Mason version :)
Just not a fan of new wave. Between 2 and 3. Repetitive. Sweet dreams song is classic though
This album came out the year I started dating my wife. That’s about the only good thing about it.
Wasn't a fan. Still not.
okay. perhaps needs another chance..to read lyrics.. 3
I’ve never cared for the title song and the rest of the album didn’t do much for me. Synths are cool, but the songs weren’t great and I don’t like the choices the singer made or maybe I just don’t like her voice. Either way not my favorite album. Going with a two because there are some good synth parts in it.
One classic, with the rest being not bad.
The industrial, robotic sound of this record serves as a nice complement to a lot of other '80s music and that makes it very refreshing. However, it's really only the title track that makes this good. The rest of the songs never reach that same level.
5/10 type beat
Sweet Dreams is my karaoke song! Obviously love that track. All the rest is kinda meh.
Just covers. Can't say I'm impressed. 2 stars
Weird feeling, liked half but forgot the other half as I heard it. Probably wouldn't listen again.
Listened Before? N The most 80's sounding 80's album. Weird vocals and sounds meet mid-80's synth pop. It's okay, just not really for me. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Love Is a Stranger
Took me back to the 80’s. But, really only one great (amazing) song here.
One of those albums where the big hit really overshadows the rest of the songs. Sweet Dreams is great, but I don't really care about the rest
This album is for a certain person who loves 80s electronic. I am not that person.
I didn’t like it, the title track and last track were ok but the rest was boring and uninspiring. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These) Rating: 2
80's synth pop. One awesome song, and a bunch of sub par 80's cheese. One great song does not an album make. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) should be on a list of 1,001 songs to listen to, but not 1,001 albums. The rest of the album pales in comparison to that smash hit, and the band didn't really do much else of note. Favourite songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Wrap it Up Least favourite songs: Love Is a Stranger, I've Got an Angel, Jennifer, Somebody Told Me, This City Never Sleeps 2/5
Did not finish
Drum machine and synths distract from poorly mixed / uninspired vocals. There are some interesting poly rhythm/overlay attempts in some of songs but it ends up just sounding clumsy and distracted. The success of sweet dreams on this album feels almost accidental when combined with the rest of the songs. Perhaps the other songs could have ended up being better if they had mixed in less sound and left the soundscape more open like in the case of sweet dreams. Though, Jennifer takes that notion of an uncomplicated soundscape and still doesn't impress with its extreme repetition and lazy synth - the best parts of Jennifer are when there are no lyrics and they let someone jam on a noisy guitar with some human percussion. Someone take their drum machine away from them, limit their singing and remind them that real instruments are good, because they shine when they're playing them or working with other artists that do. This Is The House actually might be the best song on the album. Album suffers from 80s-itis. Ok, This Is The House feels like the only song that they had fun making on the album.
2/5 didn't struck any note
This is gonna be a chore. I've never been a fan, but it's only 42 minutes and 38 seconds of my life that I'll never get back, so... Yes, this LP has the massive hit "Sweet Dreams", and Annie Lenox has a heluva voice, and the production values are excellent, but I find the whole of the album boring and annoying. How I yearn to click the 'next cut' button and go out to shovel the snow and slush (a statement I never thought I'd ever make). Nevertheless, it's so so so much better than THE KLAXONS, so it will get ⭐⭐. ____________________________ 🎧 # of LPs reviewed: 13 🎧 # of LPs left to review: 988 🎧 # of LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 3 🎧 # of LPs I *might* include in my own list: 6 🎧 # of LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine: 3
Hjep
I was hoping to be blown away by this, but it was pretty mild. Some absolute classic songs on this album but I really wasn't as engrossd as I had hoped.
Þetta er prýðisband en mikið hrikalega fær maður leið á þessari tónlist eftir að hafa hlustað í svolítinn tíma. Hún hefði getað verið mun styttri þessi plata og þá hefði hún skorað hærra en í þessari lengd var ég farinn að bíða eftir að hún kláraðist. Betri í smáskömmtum en langskömmtum.
I... think this is a decent example of why I, 9 years old when the record came out, ended up listening to Metal as a teenager. Notwithstanding its hit and "This City Never Sleeps" (put that one into my big playlist of everything), I cringed more than once. And the sampling, the "let's play a guiro here, yay!", and the dryness of those (now) stock 80ies synth sounds aged like fine milk. I guess I'd have to be some kind of archeologist to feel otherwise, but I'm not so I mostly hate this.
Some tracks are Better than others. Most are not ok for my taste
Fairly bland and repetitive overall. There are some decent cuts — Somebody Told Me, This City Never Sleeps — but quite forgettable. Outside of, of course… Favorite track: Sweet Dreams
Not for me, and that's ok
- ja was soll ich sagen.
Made moments I guess.
except for the one song the album is named after it's boring AF
Pop - little too bubblegum for me
Title track is an absolute banger. Not much else to say ab the rest of the album. Nothing I would revisit besides maybe the Jennifer song
I was really hoping I'd like this album a lot more than I did, with the first song having me hopeful with its stranger than expected synths, and obviously the powerhouse of a hit that is Sweet Dreams, but by the end of the album I found myself mostly just being a passive listener, not engaged positively or negatively, just listening. I'd say it is mostly just forgettable, an all too common occurrence with synthpop, I've come to learn. All the stars align for Eurythmics to have an album somewhere in their discography I like, but as of this review, it remains to be heard.
I can see why i only know one song from this album
Nope. Did not care for that.
1 hit album
This was so disappointing. I really thought I was going to love this album. I'd heard a few Eurythmics and Annie Lennox songs before, and liked all of them. One of them was "Sweet Dreams," but I think I'd only actually heard the end of it with the big harmonies. Well, this was not what I was expecting, especially in terms of quality. I'm not averse to synth driven pop. In fact, I love a fair bit of it, but I didn't enjoy the sounds on this album at all. They were way too harsh. On top of that, the songs themselves were all either boring and weak, or really annoying (especially that creepy Spanish one). "Sweet Dreams" was the only one of any merit. It was both melodically and lyrically strong and interesting, but the synth accompaniment didn't suit the song at all. It would've sounded so much better backed by a live band. I almost liked "This City Never Sleeps," which really created a vibe with the verses. But the chorus just missed the mark and ruined it for me.
Most of the songs are not my cup of tea. They're not bad. They just don't really do anything for me. Love Is A Stranger is pretty good though. Solid catchy chorus. The main synth riff of Sweet Dreams is brilliant, but the timbre of it always ruined it for me. My least favourite is definitely Somebody Told Me. It's quite lacking in melody. This City Never Sleeps is a decent vibe.
Very much 80's, interesting style throughout
prime example of an album that "has that ONE song that everyone knows so the entire album must be good". No, bigger half of the songs are pure garbage, the rest is average corny 80s synth-pop. Overhyped trash that I would be glad if it wasn't on this list, beacuse this certainly wasn't an album I had to "Listen to before I die". Gets 2 stars only because Van Halen is even worse
Not into it. There’s a quality to the vocals that I can’t fully put my finger on, but more often than not it sounds at odds with the arrangement - clashy, underwhelming. Like a bargain bin Donna Summer. I like some moments on this but they’re fleeting. Flips between mid and irritating
Sweet dreams made it a 1.5. Otherwise. Woof.
Sweet Dreams saved this album from being 1/5.
Sweet Dreams is big. The rest……..
Other than the one main hit, the sound of the songs is very boring. I'm underwhelmed by this considering the popularity of the titular hit.
This sounded fresh on its release. The range of AL a joy and the twiddly parts from DS uplifting. Other than the singles which are baked in, this simply does not stand up today.
Fairly standard synthpop of its time. Nothing really stood out here, beyond the obvious opener, which was more familiar. Somehow, the Eurythmics always seem less than the sum of their parts somehow, although I am no Dave Stewart fan.
The stunning vocals work well against the cold synth sound. I might have enjoyed this better as a guitar album - but that's the whole point of Eurythmics, right? It's not exactly a masterpiece or anything to come back for apart from the singles. I didn't know Green Garside was involved.
The obvious highs are really high. But the lows are equally low. This really made me want to listen to some Yazoo.
The title track is one of the defining tracks of the 80's, and Annie Lennox's voice is classic, but the electronic wavelength the 80's was fixated with for the most part leaves me cold. All (cheesy) flash, and VERY little feel.
meh
Apart from Sweet Dreams, the rest of the songs on the album are fairly disposable and apart from a couple others, filler. I admit, Sweet Dreams has a certain nostalgic quality to it, since I grew up during this era so I couldn't avoid it, but I never got into the Eurythmics and I'm not a fan of this genre at all. One star for the hit and one star for the rest of the record.
Not really my jam
It's all about you know what song which is good but I'm really tired of hearing it so this album's just useless to me.
The New Wave genre already started to drag in 1983, and it shows.
Writer could have just wrote a sentence stating I like to dance on this hit - no need to include the whole album...
The song "Sweat Dreams" deserves to be in the list "1001 songs you must listen", but the album... A massive hit doesn't make an album great and legendary. Overall, it was surprisingly boring.
Not terrible. Just not my kind of music. A lot of just noise
Lots of album filler and I found the songs to be poorly arranged. Sweet Dreams is a banger though.
Here's an extremely lackluster 80s band that somehow wrote and recorded one of the most popular songs of the decade and nothing else of consequence. Their use of synth is semi-original, but not at all innovative. Lyrics, production, and structure are all fine. People seem to think this album is really something special solely because of the title track, but their failure to replicate such a song ever again proves, at least to me, that it was a stroke of luck. 2/5
After the first 4 or 5 tracks, I was prepared to trash this; but you know, the back half has some great moments on it. Jennifer feels criminally underrated, like it could fit on the Drive soundtrack, and Somebody Told Me kind of slaps. I was never a huge fan of the title track, and like many many records of the 80s, this album is built around its hit. Cut off a few sleepers here, and I might have some sweet dreams to this one.
Sweet Dreams (Is An Apt Title) 😴
That was a disappointment. Based on the banger that is 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)', I expected to really like this album. As it turns out, whilst SD(AMoT) is great, the other tracks are not at all catchy or tuneful. Never mind. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) Date listened: 19/04/23
2 sterren dus.
A few moments I think are actually interesting buried beneath a bunch I just can’t stomach. “Love is a Stranger” is a lot of fun. The titular track obviously hits. The rest is just far too theatrical, self-serious, and synth-y for my tastes. The lyrics are gaudy and sticky sweet and the annoying inflection with which they’re sung sound to be all done in up in some reverb-y velvet that feels like a great big facade the band can hide behind. “I’ve Got an Angel” and “Somebody Told Me” in particular are garbage. There are other moments though where I was quite taken with the production. The horns on “The Walk” and on “This is the House,” plus the bass on that latter song is hoppy, happy, and rad. It’s those moments that remind me a little more of Talking Heads and play a bit more post-punky and like actual-fun. “Jennifer” is the high point of the album musically but the absolute low point lyrically. Would have loved an instrumental version of that. Essentially, all the post-punk, stripped down satire of the The Human League’s Dare (1981) is done up in some ornate, pop-friendly, radio-theater bombast that is the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” an album that I bet would have dropped the parenthetical from the title if it hadn’t meant risking unit sales. The music here feels feels genetically engineered for (then) MTV VMA shows and (now) water aerobic classes for aging retirees at community pools the whole world over. For the purposes of this review, the negatives far outweigh those few highlights, no matter how well this album was produced or influential it might be or that I actually quite like some of Annie Lennox’s solo stuff. 2/5.
1 song amazing, happy to skip the rest
I don’t really like this album very much at all. Tbh
- Cool synth and bass work - Songs blended together a lot and didn't seem very standout - Overall a little boring for my tastes - Favorite songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), I Could Give You (A Mirror)
Is this really necessary to be on this list? Just another generic English new wave group that had 1 hit to me.
Saw this was the selection for today and was excited, then bemused, then disappointed. Turns out 'sweet dreams' are actually just made of one world class track, the rest was medoicre at best. The production sounds like it was made on a bop it. A lot of the songs were rudderless. I'd have been gutted if I'd saved up for this LP based on the single.
Mostly dull.
Another one hit wonder album. The only reason this is on the list is because of the title track. It's a really good song, don't get me wrong, but you have to remember that this same publisher also has a "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die" book. Why not just include that song there? Rant aside, actual album thoughts: Let's just say that there's a reason why nobody in the world can name TWO Eurythmics songs. It's some of the most boring and by-the-books 80s synthpop I've ever heard. Like they were doing the any% "All 80s Clichés" speedrun category. Songs like "This Is the House" is what plays on loop in Tartarus.
Best: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) Worst: I’ve got An Angel Just don’t really like this album ygm
Synth pop. Recognized the title track, of course, but nothing else really stood out
Feels like they invested in a good synthetic for the time!
Another 80s singles band
Fine
Sweet Feed
one hit wonders are one hit wonders for a reason, only one good song on the album.
bad.
Interesting ideas, not really my jam
Its an okay album, there are a lot of subpar to bad songs. Despite this there are some hits. Sweet Dreams is great, and wrap it up and somebody told me are also solid. The song Jennifer was quite bad
Sweet dreams is great but there were also some very bad songs I would give it a 1.5/5 stars but I’m rounding it to 2
- ok
Personally, I was not a big fan of this album, it is not a genre that I like, although I liked 2 songs
Kinda surprised that this album doesn't have another stand out song. I guess its just a sweet dream.
Started out ok, but progressively grew more annoying. If I had a time machine, my priority would be to go back and tell Annie and Dave to cut it short.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really, I respect the group but this just doesn’t appeal to me over the length of an album personally, hits is a certain feeling and catchiness in certain songs but other than that, feels dragged out Favourite song: Track 6 - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
I appreciate the originality
Yikes. 80s. Irritating drum sound alert. Some massive singles though I'm not fond of the title track. The synth leads date really badly. I like Lennox as she is so distinctive. Sorry will never be tempted to play again 2.5.
Not into this, it's just a bit weird and not connecting with me in any way, musically or lyrically.
it's only that song that's decent
This album just isn't very good. Sweet Dreams, on its own, somehow managed to capture the era in a way that few can match. Everything else just feels generic or out of place. 2/5
It has that one famous song on it, but the rest is kinda dull
