Klassisch - der Name mir mehr bekannt als die eigentlichen Songs. Hörenswert.
Once again I'm rollin' on a river
This album definitely suffers from the same thing as a lot of albums on this list do, which is being "just another generic late 60s psychedelic rock album". I am definitely biased to give it a lower rating because I've been having a lot of these recently, but I will say this one did stick out to me a bit more than the rest.
Fine album
The blend of blues and southern rock was fun and the lead vocalist's sound worked really well for this genre. Many fun songs that I've heard before, but overall not something that I anticipate listening to much.
Yeah this good classic stuff. I'm afraid to look it up. What is Chooglin?
Solid album, couple of great songs and a couple of not so good ones.
often more focused on its southern rock aesthetic than powerful songwriting, bayou country is solid swamp rock but not nearly as transcendent as CCR would get on the next 3 albums. proud mary is as close as we get but even it plods a bit. i'd never noticed how much CCR influence there was in Tom Waits music though, interesting. the sound definitely matches the hazy heat of the album art. the guitar tone on good golly miss molly rocks, the pre-chorus with just drums and vocals rock.
Music to grow up with.
This is meandering stock standard CCR, better was to come.
Pretty good rock album. Few memorable songs.
Nothing terrible, but nothing that stood out to me.
Proud Mary keep on rollllinnn
Big fan of CCR but I found their 2nd album actually a bit boring. The title track, Proud Mary and the long simple but effective Graveyard Train are superb but the rest is a lot of filler stuff I have to say.
Swampy, gritty… best time to listen is on a hot, humid day, driving down the highway. Not bad for a bunch of Cali boys!
Har kanske tröttnat lite på allt förutom deras riktiga bangers
Good enough average American rock music, very ubiquitous around this time. CCR are definitely one of the masters of this, though the only memorable song for me on this album is Proud Mary 3/5
Proud Mary is the highlight of this album. I thought the rest was rather adequate but nothing stuck out to me. Still, good vibes throughout.
yeah man, this is a classic. I don't think I ever sat down and listened to this album all the way through and if I have certainly not with the attention I just did. this is some shit I would throw on during a road trip with the family.
Interesting to learn more history including the Blue Velvets and Vision and the Golliwogs. John taking control on this album is a direct line to some of their greatest successes and some of their deepest issues. It sounds like CCR. Though they don't always have the most variety in the album, the performance they put into it always makes a pleasant listen.
Not my genre.
Enjoyable. I can imagine there are people out there who don’t like his voice (my mum doesn’t like Adele’s voice, go figure) but I do like it. And there’s enough variety to make you keep listening but not so much that it’s like a different band sang each song.
Sorry CCR, I think you left all your best songs on Green River. Pretty generic and at times a little dull, albeit still with Foggy's lovely voice shining through.
This album made the link between old black soul/rock and mainstream 70s white rock quite clear to me
Bayou Country was a pretty simple and good album. The songs throughout mostly sounded pretty good and full of energy and the album cut a brisk pace at around 33 minutes so it never really got overly boring. The only song i feel did kinda drag was Graveyard Train which is expected since it is the longest but it also didn't have enough cool musical or lyrical moments to really keep me engaged. This is a perfectly good album that does what it does well enough. Best Song: Penthouse Pauper Worst Song: Graveyard Train
Easy listen with some classics sprinkled within. Some songs were boring but I understand why this album made the list. 3
Keep on Chooglin'
This is my third CCR album through the project, and the original source of "Proud Mary"!? Huh. Tina Turner absolutely made that song her own - this version feels a little lackluster in comparison... I gave "Green River" three stars, but it was within the first 50 albums so my ratings weren't too calibrated - giving it another listen to compare to "Bayou Country", yeah, 3 is probably about right. They're fine - not objectionable, but not too exciting, either. I stand by "Cosmo's Factory" being my fave of their albums for being a little more varied, genre-wise. Fave track - uh, "Born on the Bayou" I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Really fun album, love the bright guitar and I think the vocal delivery is really fun. Sounds swampy in a cartoonish way.
I was very surprised a the production quality of this album and the remaster. It sounded great through my headphones in stereo. However, I've never liked Creedance, mostly because of the vocals. I don't like the sound or delivery, so I find them very hard to listen to. I also just don't typically like Southern Rock. So, I recognize the influence of this album and the talent and the songwriting, but it's not for me.
Is this the crocodile rock that Elton warned us of?
Great hand/head/full body out the car window tunes on a warm spring day :,)
Its okay
Prood mary + Rest nice to listen to, but not the CCR classics I like most, Average
Не знаю что сказать. Ну ээээаааээаааэээ. Хрипит вокалист. Ну пойдёт, я б в какой-нибудь вестерн-шутерок взял как ост. Нормально. Местами лирика, местами балдёжка движуха
I like it well enough, but mostly the first and last song. The middle of the album I tuned out a little. Will I listen to again: 30%
Creedence has a distinct sound that's all them. Some songs start to sound the same because of it, but it's all still good.
Respect CCR a lot but only liked a few songs on this small album
It was pretty good I hadn't heard it before I enjoyed it
Not my usual thing but I rlly appreciated! Got a little bit bored ngl but standout track was penthouse pauper
I enjoyed - 3.5/5 Standout tracks: - Good Golly Miss Molly 4/5 - Penthouse Pauper (fell in love with this one) 5/5
Love Creedence but this isn't their best. They released something crazy like 5 different 5-star albums in just a few years, but I always found this one a bit middling between the hits.
Fine rendition of swampy blues. Nothing wrong with the album but hasn't really grabbed me
Keep on WHAT? 2.5.
# 202 : They've done a pretty decent job. I don't mind a bit of CCR "Country Rock" every now and again. Favourite Track : Proud Mary
3.5
Dad rock that predated my dad, well he was 3, but the dad vibe is eternal. Had no idea that song was called Proud Mary
Never heard of swamp rock before, but I can dig it. Seems like a great album to put on during a hot summer day with friends, or going on a drive or something. Great vocalist and strings. 3.2
Expected more
Nice little playlist, most of the songs weren't familiar, but I would've jammed to them back in the day.
Love me some credence yeehaw
Good album but not great
Favorite songs are Born by the Bayou and Proud Mary. Will revisit.
This is my second Creedence album to review, after Cosmo's Factory. I wouldn't call myself a big CCR fan, but I'm pretty familiar with a lot of their hits, a couple of which were on this album. Like Cosmo's Factory, I thought this album was fine. CCR's music is pretty hit or miss with me, and this album was no exception. "Born On The Bayou" is fantastic, and "Proud Mary" is really good too. I don't understand how it does it, but those first notes of "Born On The Bayou" always manage to make me feel like I'm standing outside in August, with the air literally clinging to me from humidity. I love the simplicity of "Proud Mary"'s sound, with its steady rhythm, the nice guitar solo full of twang, and the lyrics that paint an idealized southern hospitality. The rest of the album wavered between good and boring. "Bootleg," "Keep On Chooglin'," and "Penthouse Pauper" were good, and I felt like they felt aligned with the rest of the album's sound while still feeling unique. The other few songs were pretty boring though. I think CCR's sound can be somewhat limiting, and that's what made the low parts of this album really drag. CCR's does a really great job of crafting their own southern rock sound, but sometimes they struggle to do much within the confines of what they created. This album was fine overall, but I'd rather just stick to CCR's hits.
couple classics
Very enjoyable easy listening :) & I like the album cover
Ok ish blues.
Solidly benign background music to work to. The covers were almost as good as the originals.
Doubt it'd ever be something I'd actively seek out, but I happily had it on in the background. Decent swampy blues.
Good to hear Creedence as an album rather than a greatest hits list, although 33 minutes with 7 songs feels like they lost some master tapes or something. And last track Keep On Chooglin' is an indulgent, pointless 7 and a half minute make-weight. If you're going to have a jam at least pick a good riff or groove for your paint-by-numbers guitar and harmonica solos. So 6 decent tracks - a great side 1.
I felt the longer songs drag on a bit. Other than that, it's good
This wasn't as bad as one always dreams it would be. Swamp Rock? Ok a new one on me, i thought this lot was Rythm and Blues. I wasnt much sold on the vocals, but the guitar work was good, even the extended harmonica on 'Graveyard Train' didn't grate, that is high praise from me indeed! 'Proud Mary' is a famous track and never realised it was them. It was somewhat let down by 'Good Golly Miss Molly' - good grief! Why did they decide to do that? On the whole pretty solid stuff and gets a low 3.
John Foggerty is one of the most under rated song writers of the 20th Century. Yes this record represents the more 'swamp rock' side of things but no one can deny his ability to write a wonderful 3 minute pop song. And 'Proud Mary' is indeed a wondeerful 3 minute pop song. I have this album, someone bought me the vinyl for my 50th amongst a selection of great albums released in my birth year. In the main its solid with a couple of more well known tracks. As said, this writer really stands up next to the greats when you play the greatest hits.
pretty good
for a short album, this sure did feel long. it’s definitely got some classic songs though.
their weakest album
I mean I somewhat liked the album but it wasn't the most me album ever
This gave me American Zeppelin vibes. Very similar sound but the voice is nowhere near as good as Plant and the guitar work is nowhere near Page. Some stuff I liked but not as much as I’d hoped.
Not my CCR favorite. It has great songs, thou... But a little bit of filler
Swampy blues rock that does what it does.
3+/5
I know white folk were losing their shit when this came out, didn't know this was where Proud Mary originally came from. Too much harmonica for my taste.
A haiku: Hmmm like CCR Ingredients always good This meal a bit bland 3/5
3.5
This almost was a 4 star album for me...but Keep On Chooglin' kept on Chooglin' a little too long
Solid 70s classic American rock. Just a little bit too much of the deep south country twang for me to cross the 4* line.
Decent Album, but some songs drag on for too long. Their albums get much better after this. 7/10
didn't mind it, like the covers
You have to be some kind of America-hating commie to dislike CCR. That said, 1/4 of the album length is a one note masturbatory guitar wank fest (Keep on Chooglin'). Would have been four stars without that song.
Real classic true blues. Especially like good golly Ms Molly.
CCR reminds me of riding in the car with my dad, so I’ve got a soft spot for them. If you chop 6 minutes off of Graveyard Train, this would be an excellent album, but it’s still great nonetheless. The songs are more about the groove and the sound rather than virtuoso playing. But CCR’s sound is totally unique - no one else sounds like them, which is pretty special. Where this “bayou” sound came from is still kind of a mystery to me, since the members were all from the Bay Area. I loved “Penthouse Pauper” and their cover of “Good Golly Miss Molly.” But wtf is chooglin’?
Ah Fuck Yeah CCR. born on the bayouvisch huuere geil. d gitarre tönt so guet. mmmmh. sehr guet, au wenni find er schreit sochli fest. bootleg het chli bises losgoht. aber sobalds losgoht isch huere geil. graveyard train, chuggy chuggy train. oke isch etz langsam bitzli lang?? immer s glich? aso ich checks aber bi etz sehr abgschweift mit mone gedanken. wie chamer proud mary afoch schribe als song? wie? ich ha früener echt gmeint de song gäbs afoch scho so immer. absolut ziitlos. halt scho 1000 mol ghört aber scho usme grund. blibt ultra im chopf. keep on chooglin' isch wieder huuere lang. titel suggeriert dases lang afoch en jam wird. er singt scho seeehr intense und immer chli glich. ok jop ewig langs mundharmonika solo haha. oke de shit ischmer zu repetitiv, glaub de und de ander jam song druckets uf es 3 abe.
It's CCR you can't fault it really, but it does give me PTSD from my childhood at the clubhouse with a bunch of bikers off their faces
It’s fine. 33 minutes of what is undisputedly an album of music. Probably better than I’m giving it credit for. Maybe ol Fogerty should make his own account on this website then. 3/5
I was surprised at how bluesy this sounded. I liked it. I give it 3.5 stars.
It was fine! I think the songs could be more exciting though.
Uhh I liked this more than Bad Company yesterday. I enjoy some CCR but I think I'm more of a "greatest hits" person with them
Listened to the album while getting ready for work, had to pause it until I got into my car so I could sing along to Proud Mary without waking my family
Didn't resonate with me as much as their other stuff, but still quite good!
Quite a lot of Creedence on here, deservedly. This one's a bit slighter than others, but never less than enjoyable; nice to hear some chooglin' captured in its raw form.
just fine.
Born on the Bayou - Liked the world building and storytelling Bootleg - Found the lyrics funny, although the idea of a 'free' woman is a bit of its time Graveyard Train - Again, great story-telling, great song Proud Mary - "oh so that's where it's from!" Keep on Chooglin' - The guitar solo over the repetitive main beat & instrumentals here are the main selling point. Somehow the song matches the word choogle
Nice stem, krachtig. Redelijk traag, moody, soms aanslepend. Duet met gitaar en stem soms too much? Good golly miss Molly gaat goed
After listening, its basically your typical CCR album. The tracks Born On The Bayou and Bootleg are both of my favourites the reason being they sound the most exciting. The rest of the album kind of gets boring and the sound just stays the same. Still a good album regardless.
Short and sweet. Good songs. All very CCR-y
Decent record. Bluesy. Great production and guitar tone. A bit too much tweedly deedly and at least 2 covers.
This is exactly what we listened to back in ‘nam
This was not Monday morning jam music, but it was still alright. Didn’t think it was anything special though.
Chill album with lots of good jam band songs but nothing super special, in my opinion. "Proud Mary", "Born on the Bayou" and "Good Golly Miss Molly" stand out but at the end of the day, it's not something I'll come back to and listen to the whole thing. KEEP ON CHOOGLIN'
Pretty fine
Son un clásico, y como tal se disfruta
Good sounds. I like some CCR songs off other albums.
Pretty good. Their version of proud mary is pretty iconic. Songs are listenable, I don't love CCR or anything but they're pretty good. 3.3.
“Proud Mary” and “Born on the Bayou” aside, the remaining material doesn’t represent CCR at their best. Better albums to come for this band.
Credence The born on the bayou is super cool. Not a fan of his lead guitar playing. Proud Mary is a great song. Bootleg was good too. The rest was ok. 3.5
Straight-up, no-frills rock n roll, featuring the confident "Born on the Bayou" opener and the rollicking, wonderful "Proud Mary" as the penultimate track. Don't talk; just listen, and feel the music down in your guts.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bayou Country Second album by CCR and the start of the infighting within this l the band. This album contains one of Fogerty's greatest songs he's written: Proud Mary This album also contains the song Bitten on the Bayou. This is a good album. CCR have a lot of great songs and for me, their greatest hits album "Chronicles" is really the only album of theirs that I need. 3/5
It's CCC. It's a fun lil album. Nothing too special but I'm glad it's the right length.
Swamp rock. Country rock.
3/5. I love the jams and Cajun vibes, it brings a swampy and slow drag through each song. Blues rock at its core, CCR does well here but not perfect. This a strong vocal performance from Fogerty though, each song he comes so strong through. Not all songs are very re-listenable but overall the album flows well, drinking and relaxing on a back porch under the blazing sun.
unsicher
Pretty good. Same as the last i heard from them tbh
This was fine.
CCR can to better
After the last two albums this is like the abbey road medley. This may be the ideal 3. It has some amazing classics, and some decent songs.
I wanted to give this more than 3/5, but couldn’t find a way to justify that. The tracks “Proud Mary” and “Born on the Bayou” are fresh, energetic, and well-played; they’re my personal favourites on the album. The remaining tracks are quite dated. While it was probably impressive (and clearly popular) for its time, the swampy, heavily-accented drawling and half-impassioned instrumental isn’t quite doing it for me.
It was okay, definitely one for my dad!
Solides Blues-Rock album von CCR
Couple of nice songs and a bit of jamming to fill the time. Like Proud Mary though but wouldn’t have bought an album just for that even in 1969.
It's a pretty good album. Proud Mary is the biggest hit, but Born on the Bayou is my favorite. The other tracks are good, but Graveyard Train goes on way too long.
Not my favorite Creedence album, a bit too much white-boy blues for my liking (except Proud Mary). Their next 3 albums are 5-star and I expect to see them all on this list.
Not my cup of tea but I can tell its quality music
The Wikipedia genre description of this album is "swamp rock," which I couldn't agree with more! Some of the songs on this short album are a bit boring for my tastes, but tracks like Born on the Bayou and of course Proud Mary are fantastic blues/rock efforts that trot out the best that CCR had to offer. Standout tracks: Born on the Bayou, Bootleg, Good Golly Miss Molly, Proud Mary
I wanted it to be a 4/5 but my gut told me it was a 3
3.5 really
I always forget CCR is from California. They try hard to sound like they're from the southeast. That's kinda sleazy, CCR, and more so when you used to call yourselves the Golliwogs. I guess there's a reason you only hear CCR's greatest hits because the hits are much much better than the other songs. Not that the other ones are bad, they're fine, just not special. music: appropriated. (⌐■_■)
Every CCR song is the same. Change my mind.
Born on the bayou: classic. Reminds me of every Vietnam War movie. Nice groove, bluesy, powerful voice. Bootleg: groove and bluesy, sounds very similar to born on the bayou Graveyard train: bluesier than first 2 songs, slower. Repetitive. Nice but not quite my cup of tea. Background music in a hipster coffee shop. Too long without much happening. Good golly miss Molly: Nice faster change of pace. Coney of Little Richard with a southern rock twist. Penthouse Pauper: Back to a bluesy feel with a bit of a swing feel. "Woe is me" lyrics, boohoo blues. Proud Mary: another classic, bluesy Southern Rock, nothing fancy, but fun and more upbeat. Good hook, easy memorable lyrics. Keep on Chooglin': I think their bass player forgot how to change notes. 4 minutes in and he hasn't played a different note, just the same quarter now over and over and over. Bluesy nice groove, but another one that just sounds like it belongs quietly playing in the background of a coffee shop. Too long of just a guitar jamming and noodling against a repetitive simple drum beat and bass line, with some harmonica. Update, it took 5 minutes until the bass player threw in a couple of extra notes, but he's already back to the quarter notes. The good songs feel too short, the less interesting ones seem to keep going on and on. Classic band, good background music maybe, but not going to be any kind of frequent listen for me. I need heavier guitar, and drums that kick your ass.
Maybe a reasonable case for cultural appropriation. 3-4-3
1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die - Day 15 1. Born on the Bayou - 8.4 - feels nostalgic, but the interim between vocal sections is too long. Love the sound though. 2. Bootleg - 7.8 - feels forgettable. 3. Graveyard Train - 5.7 - I mean. the bass is grating after the first five minutes. 4. Good Golly Miss Molly - 7.1 - sounds like the epitome of a CCR song. 5. Penthouse Pauper - 8.8 - LOVE the vocals on this. 6. Proud Mary - 9.0 - guitar is awesome as are lyrics 7. Keep On Chooglin' - 8.4 - too long but guitar is still great. repetitive bass for some reason not as annoying here.
3.5
this is the first record i’ve actually been able to listen to on vinyl which is a very nice experience. fun stompy blues rock with some slow points. favourite song was proud mary
Eh
My favorite songs on the album are: Graveyard Train with it's slow and hypnotizing groove, although it's a bit too long. Then right after the up tempo bluesy rock'n'roll of Good Golly Miss Molly - great song. Of course Proud Mary all time classic song .... maybe the main reason why this album is on the 1001 list.
I’m usually not so much into music before the 80s. There are some exceptions. CCR is alright. I’ve probably heard a number of the songs on this album before but apart from Proud Mary nothing that stuck with me. Or maybe, it’s that I remember the Tina Turner version. What is this? Swamp Rock… Blusey Rock. Rock from the Bayou with Blues. I liked Proud Mary the most and Keep On Chooglin’ the least. That last one was too repetitive droney, getting on my nerves sounding. Maybe it works with drugs.
Ok, some classic songs. Fogerty sings like a god.
Blues and Rock'n'Roll influenced rock album. I like the songwriting as well as the way the songs are played and sung. Lead guitar is played excellently. Production could be better, e.g. it seems that Penthouse Pauper is too loud compared with Good Golly Miss Molly. Might just be because of limitations back when it was produced—it's older than me… The only song I really knew in advance was Proud Mary. Like it. Least favorite song on the album: Graveyard Train. It's way too long as far as I'm concerned. That might be justified by the lyrics, but I perceived it as musically annoying. Harp and guitar solos in Keep On Chooglin' are too extensive, too.
"Graveyard Train" is a standout, want to hear a drone doom cover. A lot of jam session moments throughout.
I know I’m in the minority on this, but I’m just not a big fan of Southern rock, even when it comes with a bluesy bayou twist like CCR. But, I can’t argue with CCR’s success and legacy.
1. Born on the Bayou - Amazing opener, love the passion in his (John Fogerty's) voice. Fairly simple guitar solo work, but love the fuzziness of the production overall. Kind of funny that these guys formed in CA but are singing about LA (Louisiana). 2. Bootleg - Fast paced, upbeat song. Lyrics kind of funny, nonsensical. Again, fairly simple, straightforward guitar solo work (still enjoyable). 3. Graveyard Train - Slower song, nice vibe. It's kind of long, doesn't really go anywhere... this song could have been 1/3 the length probably. Fun harmonica solo. 4. Good Golly Miss Molly - Fun song more reminiscent of late 60s pop with a bit more grunge/fuzz to it. 5. Penthouse Pauper - Another solid rock song, fun lyrics around not quite making it yet. 6. Proud Mary - One of Fogerty's best songs. Big wheel keep on turning. An easy favorite from this album. 7. Keep on Chooglin - Another long song that sort of just meanders and doesn't do as much building as a song of that length should (IMO). Overall this album has some real standouts but also does drag at points. I'm going to be a bit harsh with my ratings given the magnitude of this endeavour. 3/5
I mean- I was dreading having to listen to this one… To be honest… But also, to be honest… It slaps a lot harder than I thought it was going to! Of course we all know “Proud Mary” and Bayou but I have to say… The tones in the attitude of the band and recording are pretty darn tough! I still don’t understand Fogerty weird, southern drawl affectation… Aren’t they from the Bay Area? But this is pretty tough stuff in the band was kicking, but… Pleasantly surprised…
Well done rock album.
Schöne Mundharmonika. Bisschen Soul ig. Aber ziemlich nice, bloß nicht so meins.
It was a fun album, good tempo although out
jolie cover mais voila quoi
Helicopter music 🚁
Wiadomo czego się spodziewać po takim albumie. I dowozi. Ale czy ja to lubię?
Surprised I didn’t love this album as much as I thought I would. I usually love everything I’ve ever heard from CCR… but not loving this album. Of course I love their version of Proud Mary too, but the other songs are not a stand out for me.
В целом - всё тот же криденс, только какой-то более мрачный, с тягучими композициями по 5 c лишним минут. Такие же прикольные пищащие соляки, такая же хрипотца в голосе. Свомп-рок, чё сказать.
Great band and love their music. Proud Mary is the one I like the most from this album.
It´s a collection of great grooves and cool riffs. However, grooves and riffs usually goes on for five minutes longer than they should in the longer tracks. The shorter tunes like «Good Golly Miss Molly» makes for worthwhile listening though, and «Proud Mary» is a classic for a reason.
Creedence are just really good at what they do, and that was making southern bluesy rock albums that each had a couple massive hits on them with the rest being solid. They never blow me away, but listening to an album from them is never a bad time, always end up grooving along to a riff on each song.
it's fine, has a fun sound and a few great tracks but i found myself wanting a bit of variation, Good Golly Miss Molly helped to break the album up a bit. definitely groovy but not really for me
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Will have to come back to it again one day and see if my opinion changes.
Stop trying to make "chooglin'" happen, Fogerty. It's never gonna happen. "Bayou Country" is an easy-going, decent record, but for me it's comfortably the weakest of Creedence Clearwater Revival's gold run. Most of this seems to boil down to some awkward pacing and a lack of sprightliness or variety in the music. It feels especially long for a 33-minute album, with three of its seven songs stretching into extended, swampy jams. "Born on the Bayou" sets the pace as an opening track: a steady mid-tempo rhythm, repetitive chord progression and verses, fairly stripped back instrumentation. The best feature is Fogerty's rugged vocal and a nice use of cowbell coming in about halfway through. "Bootleg" is fine, but insubstantial: a bit of a throwaway. But it's the lengthier numbers which "Bayou Country" seems to hinge on: "Graveyard Train" chugs along for eight-and-a-half minutes, losing me somewhere along the way, and "Keep on Chooglin'" is an underwhelming, rambling closing track. Even in what should be the light relief of "Good Golly Miss Molly", despite Fogerty's impassioned vocals, the band play a fairly stiff, rigid take on such a rollicking rock and roll track. "Penthouse Pauper" nails the balance with a good, raw bluesy jam, but the biggest hit here, which has eclipsed the whole of the surrounding album in the intervening years, is "Proud Mary". I'm sure many would argue that Tina Turner sullied the original by reinventing it so radically in her own image, but to me hers will always be the definitive version. But that's a me-problem rather than a CCR problem: Fogerty of course deserves praise for penning the song in the first place, and it's still the best track on "Bayou Country" by a fair margin. Aside from that, though, "Bayou Country" sees Creedence Clearwater Revival chooglin' on all the way to the superior efforts of "Green River", "Willie and the Poor Boys" and "Cosmo's Factory".
This one was decent. Can’t say it’s really my style of music, but it was enjoyable. I liked Good Golly Miss Molly. I think some songs are worth revisiting
It’s fun! Also nice to know the common origin of chooglin’. Not mind blowing or anything but there’s some good tracks and zero stinkers. Born on a bayou is a classsic.
Skal jeg lytte til igen!
It does have one of my favourite CCR songs in Born On The Bayou. I liked it more than Green River but CCR are a singles band not an album band which explains the fact there's still too much filler. Also, what's chooglin? Don't answer that.
I love CCR, but this isn’t my favorite album. Proud Mary really saves this one.
Decent, but not great. Better CCR albums out there. Middle portion of album was mediocre, but it starts and ends well. Listened to with Jack and Cammie Listened to on 11/21/2023
A song off this album is in almost every movie about the 70s it feels like. Some just go on and on doing the same thing. I’m not much of a “jam” type so that’s a bit irritating to me.
wooo
Pretty good
I’ve decided I quite like Credence. They’ve popped up twice now and I’ve enjoyed both of them. Does that make some sort of Dad Rock person? I’d certainly choose Credence over Velvet Underground (who have also popped up twice already). Straight forward, slightly sleazy sounding rock.
Half the songs are great and the other half a plodding bore.
3
an album where u feel like u already know every song. reminds me of poppy always
There’s no way they sound like that in Berkeley.
It was okay and a welcome break from the previous few albums that were painful to get through. I remember this album from years past, hits nostalgia notes
3,5
Southern jams set the mood for Friday.
High 3 Credence do alot of things I don't like others doing but I let CCR away with because they entertain me 3/5
Good Golly Miss Molly Proud Mary Eh its a vibe, but there are much bet Creedence albums Proud Mary is the only bop here.
Opzich prima
CCR could have decided to release one amazing album in 1969. Instead, they chose to release 3 OK albums. Mo' money, I suppose. But it's going to cost them a couple of stars. I hope they can live with this while sleeping on their solid gold pillows.
Surprised how decent this sounds. I even knew some of the songs. Country rock style ok but a bit dated. Not a classic but enjoyable enough
Good old bayou rock. Liked their version of Good Golly Miss Molly better than Little Richards. Also learned what “chooglin” was.
Enjoyed its brevity surprised it released in 1969. There’s actually a lot of variety here, which was something I was concerned about going in. Enjoyed the good golly miss Molly cover, keep on chooglin. Actually I enjoyed the more southern sounding rock songs like penthouse pauper too, I’m a sucker for that genre like allman brothers and that shid
Funny to think of a time when music like this would be “hip” and what the people who enjoyed it were like. Good, but nothing special which I feel the urge to go back and listen to.
Live creedence, but this album was a little too repetitive for my liking. Still fun though
Good album, Woodstock era rock
6.5/10 Very solid CCR, but most tracks fall a tad uninspiring, especially considering Good Golly Miss Molly and Proud Mary being on the track list. I especially like the cover art in which the photographer dropped out of Star Wars hyperspace just in time to snap Credence chilling in a swamp One thing I am inspired to do by this album, however, is choogle. God damn, I will choogle to the ends of the earth. I will choogle high, I will choogle low. Choogle near, choogle far, choogle wherever the fuck you are, John Fogerty commands me to choogle, and I will follow him in chooglin' til the curtain falls and I choogle no more.
Decent, didn’t realise they originally did proud Mary 7.1
KEEP ON CHOOGLIN' this guy has the best voice.
Has some classic songs that I instantly recognized. Good sound and consistent
This is a decent album. Nothing more or less.
Never wanted to love in Bayou Country, when I want to I know the perfect music to accompany me
I was hoping to see some of the CCR songs I’ve previously listened to and enjoyed on this album, but alas the only one that I would probably listen to again with some regularity is “Proud Mary,” one of their more famous songs. I really didn’t like the first half of the album (was kind of bored tbh). Other standout tracks for me were “Good Golly Miss Molly” and “Penthouse Pauper.” I still like their sound and know they have better (for me) songs, but this one just didn’t hit for some reason. I’ll rate it 3 out of 5 swamp monsters!
Good album, a lot of familiar songs and I do enjoy CCR every once in a while
- expected something else - surprisingly good - solid 3/5
Ok
great but sounded very similar
And yet another band better served by a greatest hits compilation. Proud Mary is a monster of a song - pretty damned perfect. Both Tina turner and the Ohio players prove it if the original doesn’t convince. Well produced. But a full album? Give me the singles. Averaged to three but proud Mary itself is worth fifteen.
There are a few things I quite like about this album; it's a great swamp rock sound (even though they hadn't been near a bayou in their lives), it's brief (although still manages to have filler on it), and the singles are cracking! It must be said that the Ike and Tina version of Proud Mary is definitive. I am also more fond of the Beast of Bourbon version of Graveyard Train than this original. Born on the Bayou is a pretty good song. They cover of good golly Miss Molly is completely listenable, but doesn't in any way replace Little Richard. But given that Graveyard Tarin and Keep on Chooglin' are essentially one-chord vamps and fill up half the running time of the album between them. You can see that this album is pretty non-essential. Dimery's allergy to compilations is really hurting us here. CCR are one of the great singles band (with the all-time record for most US #2 singles without ever reaching #1), so a best of is a terrific listen, but really, the albums are inessential. I assume that is partly a result of pushing out albums at a rate of knots (6 albums and 17 singles between '68 and '70). The singles are terrific, but the albums are rushed. Look, I like the sound, and a CCR greatest hits would be five stars, but this album is inessential.
I don't remember any of the songs I listened to so i guess I didn't like them or dislike them
I already don't like this album nearly as much as the last one. But it's possible that I just don't care for "Born on the Bayou" I just am not super into his voice. The drums on "Good Golly Miss Molly" 10/10. "Penthouse Pauper" also has really good drums. I also like the bluesy vibes on this one. 10/10. "Proud Mary" A classic. This is the CCR I like. I know Born on the Bayou is a classic as well, but this one is legitimately groovy. "Keep on Chooglin" is not all that great. It is far too long. I also have no idea what 'chooglin' means.
3. Great voice but samey as fuck
Tæpur þristur. Proud Mary er fínt, Born on the Bayou líka. Ágætis fenjasound og grúv, en lögin eru ekki eftirminnileg. Good Golly Miss Molly má svo missa sín.
liked it. would blast it on the route 66. good length and guitar solos
It's a really nice mix of genres and the singer has a great voice. As far as folk rock goes, it doesn't get much better than this band. This has a couple of outstanding songs but the rest are fairly average and unmemorable. A high 3 from me.
Decent rock album.
Born on the Bayou // Bootleg // Proud Mary 2.5/5
Nostalgic. Reminds me of war movies when I was a child. Feels like wasting away in a dive bar in the south with no AC. Classic rock with a dash of Mississippi Blues. Proud Mary is one of my least favorite songs, ever. But overall, decent listen.
Basically the same as Beggars Banquet but better
Surprised this is on here, you'd think one of their other records would be here over this, this is good but not their best! They are really comfort food and have just banger after banger, you never realize it until you go down a rabbit hole and find out how many great songs they have! Their cover of Proud Mary is great...oh what's that, they wrote it? Well goddamn I feel like Tina Turner said, nah, fuck that, that's my song now and never looked back! There is a nice cover on this so I'm half right!
Ja prima, beetje saai maar wel gewoon heerlijk blues achtig. Proud Mary natuurlijk een knaller, maar dat nummer van 8 minuten mag er ook zijn.
Some really classic songs, but otherwise not my thing.
I like a lot of Creedence songs. I feel like this album doesn't reflect their best work, but it's still pretty good. Graveyard Train was the only real down note and was a real slog at over 8 minutes. The album beyond that was nice and groovy. Proud Mary is obviously pretty iconic.
i like CCR a decent amount and know a handful of songs from their other albums, but not this one. I've heard born on the bayou and proud mary, and of course good golly miss molly. those are really the only standouts, as much as I wanted to like a song called "keep on chooglin'". we really didn't need three out of seven songs to be over 5 minutes long on this album, and they didn't really go anywhere in that time. meh favorites: born on the bayou, proud mary, good golly miss molly
I listened to a lot of CCR in my wanna-be hippie college days (I went to college in the late 80s, so anything hippie I tried to be was wanna-be level), but I haven't really listened to them in any manner since then. Hearing their music again for the first time in a mighty long time reminds me why I liked them. Good music that's played very skillfully. Fun stuff!
Really quite like this, but not enough to put it on my 'listen again' list
Mostly gritty southern rock. The 2 singles are more polished, and the rest of the album sounds like it could have been recorded in a barn (in a good way). On the shorter side, but it was nice to hear some CCR songs that aren't on the chronicles album. Not the strongest throughout, but liked the album. 3.5/5. Would listen again
Good blues record. Was fairly familiar but good to listen thru.
Enjoyed Born on the Bayou & Good Golly Miss Molly
"Proud Mary" is the obvious standout here, but the rest of the album's solid swamp rock. Let's call it 3.5.
A little CCR is fine, but after awhile it all starts to sound the same to me.
I like CCR a lot they have a raw naturalism. (...and obv much better than the Eagles man) Whoa that sounds pretentious. The long tracks in this tend to run a bit too long. Safe 3
It’s a bluesy beaut
Liked Good Golly Miss Molly. The other tracks needn't have left the bayou.
It's a bit funny that a band who apparently wrote the earliest form of Swamp Rock was actually from out around California. This was pretty fun as a listen, you can definitely hear a rockabilly element fused up with some bluesy riffs and a dash of soul. Proud Mary is the one which everybody knows, but I think God Golly Miss Molly is my favorite and the best culmination of the sound of this whole record.
Solid but not green river
I like it but not all at once kind of like.
CCR have always been a staple for 70s southern rock. The best track on this album, Proud Mary, has been severely overplayed on the radio. The rest is just middle-of-the-road radio friedndly rock by the numbes - quite a bit boring and predictable. 2.5/5
A handful of classics that I was already familiar with, which made it a much easier listen than I expected it would be. Super accessible combo of jammy poppy bluesy 60s music.
I don't know what "chooglin" is and I'm afraid to ask why I should keep doing it. Also, it's hard to separate CCR from the context of being the band that soundtracks every Vietnam sequence in a movie. My favorite of theirs is "Travelin' Band" which isn't on this, but it's still decent.
Songs about the Deep South and the Bayou written by a guy born and raised in California. Starting your career out with the first 6 albums going platinum in the US. Easy peasy, keep on Chooglin' John.
Listened twice. We all know Proud Mary but was anything else supposed to stand out?
I liked this, but apart from the hits it didn't blow me away.
For an album that only clocks at in at around 33 minutes, two songs, ‘Graveyard Train’ and ‘Keep On Chooglin’ take up about half the runtime, and both run way longer than they need to. And while CCR’s rendition of ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’ is good, it’s still a cover, so hardly original. ‘Proud Mary’ is obviously the standout composition here, and opener ‘Born On The Bayou’ rocks as does ‘Penthouse Pauper’. But aside from these three highlights, the overall sense here is of a band that didn’t have enough material to properly fill two sides of an album.
Empieza bien con "Born in the Bayou". Otra buena es "Good Golly Miss Lolly" y por supuesto "Proud Mary". No será perfecto pero si es imprescindible.
KKona clap
3.5
John Fogerty was born and raised in Berkley, CA, not the bayou. So, you know, do with that what you will. Any way, this album is a good collection of blues songs with some catchy hooks. Pretty harmless and fun.
Nice but feels a bit same same after like the 3rd or 4th song or so, proud mary and Born On the Bayou are both brilliant songs tho
Kinda very repetitive to the point where it’s disappointing because I know they can do more. Nothing incredibly wrong with this album, I enjoyed it very much. Just wish there was a bit more. 3/5
I'd throw it on, not amazing but good fun
Classic CCR
It's alright
Fake southern accents and the whole Bayou schtick aside, there are some nice, cool, atmosheric songs on here. That, plus it's an album that gave us Proud Mary. Givin it that 3 ol timey steam boats outta 5 y'all..
Love CCR but this isn’t there best imo, Proud Mary carries
Starts strong but a lot of the album gets lost in Fogertys incomprehensibly lyrics Proud Mary does a lot of heavy lifting for the 3rd star before Keep on Chooglin' tries to gaslight you into thinking you're listening to a real song
I am already pretty familiar with this band as I have 2 or 3 of their songs on a playlist. They even have the Vietnam War protest song turned pro-war song turned meme "Fortunate Son." This album unfortunately does not have that song on it. They've got a good sound: their instrumentation is usually pretty good, and the lead singer has a very distinct and nice voice for rock. This album has some pretty good cuts on it, and others that aren't as good, but still not bad. It is wild that find out that they are the original performers of Proud Mary (rolling on the river) Despite it being mostly known as a song performed by Tina Turner. Kind of like "I Will Always Love You" turned into a Whitney Huston Song even though it was originally a Dolly Parton song. I want this to be a 4, but the other mid cuts that surround the good ones bring this down ever so slightly. It's a high 3/5
relisten?
country blues rock
better than i was expecting, i usually think they’re overrated but this was a good release
Not their best work but a solid album.
Good, but just average for CCR
This did not bring me joy but it was also tolerable
It was alright 3/5
Keep on Chooglin’
be
I dig it. Not something I'd put on my favorites list but I get why my Dad loved them. I'd listen again.
Album 1 let’s get it. Accidentally closed spotify so I’m listening from the start again lol The way the guitar talk in ‘Graveyard Train’ is so baller. Tina turners version of proud Mary has so much energy it’s hard to beat it, cool to see the original be such a different vibe from the (arguably) more popular version Yeah, I could see myself smoking opium in a Vietnamese jungle to this album 👍
It's always disappointing to me when the biggest hit is actually the best song on the album, but i guess it's inevitable sometimes. The album is good enough, but "Proud Mary" is monumental, and there's nothing else here quite as great as it Overall, it's a quite enjoyable rock album, if not particularly memorable.
Creedence Clearwater Revival is a familar band, and I have heard two of the seven tracks from Bayou Country before. "Born on the Bayou" is the best track on the album. The track has a deep rooted tangability that has helped to define the music of CCR. The rest of the album is fine, but I wish that CCR hadn't kept on chooglin' for so long. I don't know what 'chooglin' is, but that song went on too long.
more a 3 1/2
fine
not totally my type of music but some good stuff
I need to revisit, but I think the overwhelming consensus about this one is that it's the weakest release from CCR's incredible streak of albums during the tail end of the sixties. And from what I can remember about the LP, I fully concur with the masses here. *Bayou Country* was the record that started that streak, and as such, is a harbinger of the great things to come. And of course, "Proud Mary" and "Born On The Bayou" are instant classics. But then, there's the rest, still sounding like a middle-of-the-road blues/rock revival for modern ears, without much interesting input into it. So if we're talking about essential *albums*, this one should probably not make the cut. Update after a closer listen: nope, my overall judgment doesn't change a bit. The vast majority of those seven tracks heavily rely on a single chord, including "Born On the Bayou", actually. So I would lie if I said that I find a lot of those tracks exciting (apart from "Proud Mary", once again). "Bootleg" could have been better if that small bridge after the second chorus had been repeated and expanded, "Graveyard Train" is a bit of snorefest, and if the Little Richard cover that follows is kinda fun, it's too derivative to seal the deal at the end the first side. As for the second side, it still sounds like a rough draft of what Creedence Clearwater Revival would later be appreciated for (and there are no memorable ballads--part of CCR's appeal today). I get that the live version of "Keep On Chooglin'" must have been fun at the end of a gig, but as far as the album version goes, it's still a little too predictable and by-the-numbers to transcend its humble origins. One can wonder if the real appeal of the song is that no one really knows what "chooglin'" means. A little bit of mystery never hurts, I guess... Of course, in most of the songs performed in this album there's still a nice interplay between the lead guitar and John Fogerty's vocals, and the latter are obviously soulful and impressive from start to finish. But you can still enjoy Fogerty's great voice on much more thrilling cuts taken out of subsequent LPs. So with that in mind, I'm keeping some room for *Cosmo's Factory* and maybe even *Green River* and *Willie And The Poor Boys*. You can't be too cautious when you only have a list of 1001 albums... Number of albums left to review: 634 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 182 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 85 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 106 (including this one)
Fun blues rock, proud Mary is an all time classic
It feels like creedence had the sound they wanted in mind and just did a bunch of jam sessions to that. You can tell when the singers freestyling which is my problem but I love the stuff you can’t tell he actually wrote some shit down for
Pretty decent - enjoyable listen with some nice tunes on there.
Alright, not their best but decent
I just give up on songs that are over 7 minutes long. Maybe I'm like the Cs. It's a melodic album, but with some rough parts.
It has a raw rock blues energy that does a pretty decent job of not being too stuck in the time period. Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary are certainly strong, with the rest holding pretty steady (not sure what to say about the word "chooglin'" though)... still i don't really like fogerty's voice, so i respect this more than i enjoy it.
A few great songs and a few OK songs
This is the third Creedence album I've gotten out of 163 so far, that seems like a lot! Nowhere near as good as Green River, even though it does have Proud Mary. I prefer Cosmo's Factory too. Overall some decent jams on here, but a bit hit and miss, some fairly forgettable songs.
Good groove trucking along throughout. Almost a jam session feel.
Most of my credence listening was from a best of CD. A dedicated album doesn't add much to the experience. Jangly good time though.
Highlights: "Proud Mary," "Born on the Bayou," "Keep on Chooglin" Even though we know these ideas were in the air and people were converging on them, it is hard to believe that Led Zeppelin I was released a week after this. Before this, what we hear on The Byrd Brothers might exemplify "country rock," but CCR brings in the heaviness of Cream, and Fogerty's raw vocals are a world apart, owing more to classic blues or the Beatles and Stones. Even if the sound owes a lot to psych, Fogerty's lyrics are much more grounded and understanding of the themes of their blues roots. It's also not common up to this point for psych bands to do seven minutes of jamming -- that's honestly more accurate to Indian influences than the bands that were heaving those pretensions around. I come away with a positive impression! It's not for me, but I'm convinced this is a band with proper appreciation of their influences that is serious about their music and finding their own voice.
Yeah, this is CCR. You kind of know what you're getting going into a CCR album, and this one doesn't disappoint, per se. But it's also not one of their best. "Bootleg" is a nice deep cut that I wasn't familiar with, but otherwise, this is just a decent addition to CCR's discography. Not so much something you NEED to hear before you die. I think I'd just point inquiring minds towards Chronicle, their greatest hits compilation. Outside of the aforementioned "Bootleg", it's got everything you need from this one.
Leuk om naar te luisteren en zeker iets waar ik aan zou kunnen wennen! Had nog nooit iets geluisterd van ccr behalve natuurlijk Proud Mary
Bit boggy.
I gave the first two CCR albums 4s. They cranked out three LPs in one year, chock-full of hits, all of which made 1001, and sounded like they could have been part of the same album. This LP isn't as consistent as the others. The 8 minutes songs didn't need to be and they borrow a little too heavily from old time rock n' roll. But the signature tunes, Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary, are classics. They sure sound swampy for a bunch of California guys and Fogerty sure has a bluesy voice for a white guy.
Upp och ner. Uppsidorna stora, nedsidorna mest meh. Bästa: Proud Mary Sämsta: Good Golly Miss Molly
Dat andere album van deze makkers beviel me wat beter, maar ook deze vond ik toch ook weer tof.
Ok deze is een zeventje. Maar zo 2x in de week CCR is wel een aanslag op m'n ouwe-lullen-gen hoor.
Keep on chooglin'
First listen
Nära en fyra. Kort album vilket man gillar men vissa låtar är sänken. Keep on chuglin är nog bäst när den bara maler på
First listen without the blessed WH-1000-XM3's, used Alices JBL's. Had potential but did not suit my mood. Low 3.
Good, but not life-changing. Proud Mary is amazing (though I knew that before launching into this endeavor), the rest is good, but feels a little repetitive at times.
I think this is CCR album 3 for me. I've cone to find that while I really enjoy some of their songs a lot, listening to full albums by them is less satisfying. I'd rather listen to them "Ala carte" or frankly a greatest hits album. Just being honest.
Fyrsta lagið var gott. Annars ekkert sérstakt.
Old fashioned swamp rock, just like grammaw used to make.
I don't tire of CCR in the way that I often do with other music from this generation. The standout classics Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary appear on this record and most of the other songs are only one whole or half-step in quality from that. I'm not saying the record is without a clunker or two...
Two CCR albums I’ve listened to fully know and I really like their sound. Know instantly it’s them. Cannot stand Tina Turner’s version of Proud Mary, but the original here is class. Boss album, big fan.
Good album. Don't think i stopped tapping a toe or bopping my head here. Could see myself watchin' out for gators from my porch listening to this in the sticky heat
Hard to say how much I liked it. Graveyard train was such a slog in such a short album, but penthouse pauper was great.
Not their best work. Even the hits on this one are weaker compared to their other LPs. It’s almost like a CCR B-sides album.
never have i been more acutely aware of my own lack of knowledge regarding bayous. for example: what are they? nobody knows. this is truly the creedence clearwater experience. fave: bootleg
Easy listening
Perus ccr jyystöä, rentoa rockia
Standard.
