Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I'm not going to pretend like the lyricism is top notch on this album, but it doesn't stand out, and it's not supposed to. This is an album to just kick back and relax to. Don't think about it, just let it carry you away. And for doing that, this album is perfect. Production is fantastic and immersive. Overall, is it a good album? Definitely. Is it a great album? Perhaps not, but I wouldn't dispute It's placement on this list.

Not bad.

good but, as with most of the older rap i’ve gotten on here, nothing special

Why tf does busta get intro and outro rights on this

I liked it more than I thought I would since it is a genre that I don’t listen to often. 3/5

Un album qui confirme en tout cas que Ginuwine a bâti toute sa carrière autour du fait de roter avec une voix de robot. Personne ne lui en voudra.

respekt, međutim mi nije neki album iskreno. dobar, ali tojto.

Good rap album

An interesting mix of sounds here, and great production (Timbaland). Missy Elliott has a good singing voice and (at times) fun and engaging lyrics. Other times, not so much, and it feels dated. But you can see why it's on the list. Not something I'm likely to come back to, but an enjoyable listen.

A really promising debut that is a lot more chill than the commanding presence Missy has on later albums. Not quite as immediate as something like Miss E, but there are some really strong cuts on here beside the better known singles (the run from Friendly Skies to Izzy Izzy Ahh is maybe even stronger than that opening run, though The Rain is still probably my favourite song on the whole thing). Unfortunately it does tail off a bit towards the end, and I’m Talkin’ is ridiculously cheesy, and the choice to have two spoken outros is baffling

25th April 2023 Listened while cleaning the kitchen after the granite had been fitted. Went to watch evil dead rise in Stroud after work. Funny moment when I started playing this in the fiat infront of the builders. Nice bit of 90s RnB, rap and hip hop blended by the powerful Missy.

This is ok. Not my cup of tea but I like music that is sonically interesting and Missy has always been that.

Rather a bit more singing than I was expecting

Ah kunnon chillii ysäriä, nautin. Vähän junnaa loppupuoli paikallaan, niin jää nyt kolmoseen.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, as I’d wrongly assumed this would have any individuality polished out, as heard in much of what I’ve heard of that period’s pop-hop. But this has a lot of character, quirk, and sonic weirdness: it’s coherent

A time capsule from the late '90s. Quite enjoyable but not very memorable.

3.4 - While I do like some of Timbaland’s beats on here and I do recognize Missy as an all-around singing and rapping talent, I found this record more laid back (boring?) than I was expecting. Missy’s vocals are somewhat muddy in the mix and the most memorable bars are being spit by her collaborators (Da Brat on “Sock It 2 Me” and Space on “Gettaway”). About 2/3 of the way in, Missy runs a sort of victory lap, declaring “I’m such such a good rapper.” Unfortunately, I feel like she’s overselling herself and she hasn’t quite delivered the goods.

Best ok hoor, zo op de zondagmorgen. Ik had meer frustratie bij mezelf verwacht.

Love missy, but not the best of her work

Missy and Timbaland kill it but like most Hip Hop of the era, front loaded and late filler. But the guests on the filler for a debut!

A decent hip hop album and pretty good female led rap album. The debut album of Missy Elliott showed that she had rapping skills right away. The production by Timbaland was funky and had some decent bests throughout the album. The album was a bit long with an hour run time. Some songs could’ve been cut but overall it was a well done album that came out okay to me. There were a couple good songs that showed her skills but other than that most were pretty average. 5.9/10

I think I’m getting a little fatigued with the early 90s hip hop/r&b so this review might be slanted. The album is fine, nothing blew me away.

Zabavno, čeprav so si mi pesmi malo podobne med sabo. Nisem dovolj zbrano poslušala. Všeč mi je, da je povabila veliko ženskih glasov na album.

HL: "Sock it 2 Me", "Pass the Blunt", "Best Friends" February 2, 2023

ok hh album

Enjoyed

A good album but nothing special. Great singles. Solid work.

Not really singing. Not very good rapping. Good beats. 6/10.

It's a lot more RnB focused than I'd expect a Missy album to be. Also didn't know Timbaland and Missy were in a group together prior to this. The beats are great, and while Missy isn't a bad singer, I just don't think this style suits her as much. Favorite tracks: "Beep Me 911", "The Rain", "Pass Da Blunt"

3,5. gott popprap. fyrirboði tortímingarinnar?

A solid rap album. Not much more to say

Good. Will definitely listen to other Missy Elliott releases since I haven't heard much of her outside the radio.

I can get behind this, just a little on the long side. Also, it's kind of just a weird time piece. The lyrics are a bit strange at times when viewed through a modern lens, but that stuff tends not to bother me that much, it's just something I noticed. Also, I loved all of the Busta Rhymes parts. Standouts: Hit 'Em wit da Hee, The Rain, Gettaway

Pretty good

I’m sure that this album was very impactful in the genre and inspirational for its time, however, I can’t get into for one reason or another. Some songs feature the sample too heavily, some songs Missy’s rap game is just not that great, and some were just straight up annoying. Whatever it was, I found myself consistently checking how many songs were left. I like her voice and thought the entire album was produced very well, but not enough to save it. 3/5

Pretty cool.

Not a huge rap fan but I understand why this album makes the list. Good to here the female POV that she brings.

The Rain is a great track, although well produced mostly left me a bit cold

I'm not really a fan of this genre but I'm giving this a three because the album was ahead of its time. I didn't actually care for most of the songs but "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" was great.

Always struggle with this genre...never helps when the album starts with a shitty sweary skit. Gets better though. Immaculate production from Timbaland and in many ways it feels like his album. There are some deep grooves and plenty of well chosen guests to do some of the "singing". MEs choice of rhymes are a bit erratic at times...3.3

not what i was expecting at all but in a good way! 1990s missy > 2000s missy

I preferred this to "Under Construction" and there are some great tracks on here. I particularly enjoyed "Sock It To Me" and "The Rain" 3+/5

The album is alright. A couple of songs were recognizable. Some songs that I had not heard before and were pretty good. Some were just a bit too long and just unnoteworthy. There a couple songs were Missy is just making noise. There is a shoutout to Timbaland on every song.

I'm really not a fan of this genre, but enjoyed this more than I anticipated.

Enjoyed it - much chiller than I expected

Vibing funky and soulful beats and the delivery is not bad either, but lyrically it falls behind and stretches for just too long.

Generic and unoriginal but reading the reviews it was quite groundbreaking so maybe this paved the way? Even the biggest hit on this is a remake but having said that it's well produced and pleasant to listen to so there you go.

Funcionou melhor do que o outro dela.

As "Get Ur Freak On" is one of my favorite jams ever, I really looked forward to hearing this debut album for the first time. While there were some good moments, for most of the hour I did not connect with what felt very repetitive. I still don't love dragged out slow beats without a change in tempo here and there, and I just got both annoyed and bored with a lot of it.

LOL can’t really listen to this with my kids around! At first I was just ok with this album but have enjoyed the songs more the further in I get. There is a lot of humor in this, and great beats by Timbaland. I’m still not clear why it is ranked so high on critic’s lists, but I could definitely see myself listening again.

Today, Missy Elliott's debut album is regarded as one of, arguably THE most important R&B and hip-hop albums by a female artist of the 1990s. Despite this, this album is far from flawless. Missy Elliott is still an intriguing character because she writes and—with Timbaland— produces her own songs. Furthermore she's talented in rapping and singing. The song material on the other hand falls short in many ways, especially lyrically, even if you can already tell that the production was ahead of its time in terms of sound. With those great trumpets and the well-crafted chorus, "Sock It 2 Me" is unquestionably the album's highlight. Although "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" makes good use of that sample, the verses that surround it just don't sound right with the background track or the sample lines. The laid-back vibe, along with a gorgeous guitar riff from Eddie Floyd's Check Me Out that plays throughout the song, makes a somewhat darker production like "Why You Hurt Me" appealing. But those stand out as the album's highlights. Although it might possibly be a result of the album's lackluster song selection, there are a lot of guest appearances that don't add anything (read: nothing really). It's also difficult to find anything good in songs like "They Don't Wanna Fuck With Me" because the lyrics are yet another example of how ridiculous they are. A mixed album across the board; so three stars.

This is indeed Supa Dupa Fly

More like 3 and a half. Don't need all those goofy sound effects in there. I think those are Timbaland's contributions? TIL that he's the thing I hate most about late 90s/early 00s R&B/hip hop. Sound effects aside, this album has great vibes and good flow. First half is stronger.

Why is it so long? That question shall be our guide for diagnosing the flaws not only in this album, but of 90s albums generally. The compact disc (remember those? they were also known as CDs, if that helps) can hold 74 minutes of music; apocryphally, the inventors decided on this length in order for a single disc to be able to hold Beethoven's 9th Symphony on one disc (this isn't true, but it's a pleasant lie). This empowered musicians with the ambition to extend the lengths of their albums, but signficantly increased the prevalence of filler, shivelling the impact of their albums by filling the fuckers with inessential crap. Well done CDs, you gave licence for the Sm*sh*ng P*mpk*ins to torch two hours of my life with their conceited arse-gravy. No genre suffered more from this technological grandiosity that hip-hop. For 90s rappers, you proved the scale of both your vision and your swagger by ballooning your album to its maximal size, not caring about the resultant pop. As a stance, this is in keeping with hip-hop's machismo, but it mainly begat homogenised tracks and godawful skits. Missy Elliott is of course a lady, so you'd hope for less self-aggrandisement and more delicacy (yes, I know that's a gender stereotype, but wishing for more femininity is hardly the most unforgivable of crimes). So it's a touch heartbreaking than Missy Elliott doesn't try to flip over the table, and instead produces a 90s hip-hop album. To its credit, there's an undercurrent of soul flowing into several tracks, and these are the womanish pearlers of the album. But there's also the swamp of undistinguished, indistinguishable songs about marijuana and how Missy is not someone to mess with. This makes the album less a treat than a march. Finishing an album out of obligation isn't that gladdening a sign. To illustrate further, the track Best Friends, a sweet duet with Aaliyah about, well, friendship, would have served as a great, rewarding coda. However, here it's just track 10 of 17. This glut leads to the paradox that it's difficult to appreciate Missy Elliott's rap skills because she spends so much time demonstrating her rap skills. It's no piece of cake to consume a whole Black Forest gateau in one sitting. Finally, I'd like to discuss the conspicuous samples on certain tracks. Ann Peebles' I Can't Stand the Rain? Fine. Musical Youth's Pass the Dutchie on the track Pass Da Blunt? A joke that doesn't come off (fun fact: Pass the Dutchie was partially taken from the reggae song Pass the Kouchie, kouchie being a hash pipe; since Musical Youth were a kid-friendly act consisting of kids, they changed the cannabis references to food references, with dutchie being patois for a Dutch oven). Jamiroquai's Morning Glory? You're extracting the urine and no mistake. Three stars for the good bits.

Respect for Missy, but this genre has never been my thing.

I liked this more than expected. Not a fan of most hip hop or rap but Missy seems kind of musical compared to others. 3 stars.

Not my usual neighborhood but I am, of course, aware of Missy Elliot's iconic status so I'm interested to dive into this, her debut studio album. Love the luxe setting of the cover photo. I don't love the intro but otherwise the initial tracks are really strong, especially The Rain. Honestly it's not quite what I was expecting. The rest of the songs are a bit uneven but with lots of sex and drugs and attitude sprinkled throughout they are all entertaining. Overall I'm left wanting to hear more from her.

3-3.5 out of 5

Izzy Izzy Ahh, bluh blah, bluh blah blah! There wasn't much here for me on this one. I liked the pass the dutchie style Pass the Blunt song. The rest was just kind of irritating.

Liked this, definitely one of her stronger albums.

Soul hip hop

Some great production from timberland but Elliot is a weak rapper at this stage

Pièces préférées: Sock It 2 Me, The Rain et Pass da Blunt

I liked this much better than 'Under Construction'. I don't think it's right that Missy Elliot has two albums in the 1001 albums you 'must hear' before you die though.

Legalzinho mas não muito empolgante

Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.

First listen: pretty much only like Beep Me 911.

I'd never heard this and I was glad it's Timbaland on production, he was starting to hit his stride here. Loads of good tracks

I liked this more than I expected. Still not super my thing though

Never listened to this before, other than hearing the singles when they were popular. Pretty good overall. I like Missy Elliott's voice and production skills, but a lot of this album isn't as memorable as tracks she released later in her career. Some good guests like Busta and Aaliyah, but Timbaland is an immediate detractor from any track he appears on.

Pretty enjoyable funky, smooth hip hop with crisp production. Not entirely my thing but I can chill to it. The beat and jazzy chords in Beep Me 911 are awesome. But why the fuck is this an hour long?

I know Missy moreso from her early 2000's hits than anything, but this album has been on my radar for a while, after seeing it listed in Harvard's Hip-Hop Archive (sidenote, I hope they earn more to update it soon). It's not bad, but it does get a little samey. It could have been a lot better at a brisk 45 minutes, but still earns points for that crisp Timbaland sound. He'll always be relevant IMO C

-Some good beats and great vibes -Kinda wish it were a bit shorter -Album feels a bit front-loaded with the best songs

Nothing mindblowing, but I understand why it became an important piece of the cultural landscape in hip hop. I'm glad I heard it, but I doubt I'll ever return to it.

A very nice 90s hip-hop album with Timbaland as a producer. Beats and rendition of Missy Elliott were great! However, it joins me less emotionally and I don't think I will listen to it again in my life.

Flawless production. Not entirely my thing (as much as her later albums would be) but still worth it.

Liked the music; a little funky. The lyrics were forgettable.

The beginning of Missy, more R&B than I expected to be. Not very memorable, but ok

Fun album. Nostalgic hip hop.

Ok. Good production. Meh lyrics

Some real catchy stuff at times in there. Other parts were less engaging -- kind of sounded to me like too many other things -- but overall, this album took me in with some really nice beats, and I do like her voice and the way she uses it.

Loved some tracks but others didn’t do it for me. Love Timbaland though

Not a rap guy. This is fine. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible.

6/10 this had a nice vibe but it was like it couldn’t help but fade into the backgrohnd

Smooth production but pretty damn boring. 5/10

I liked the first half of the album, then it sort of dropped. My favourite track from the album is Hit 'Em Wit Da Hee (ft. Lil Kim).

Niet helemaal mijn ding maar wel oké

Supa dupa fye

Not bad

Pretty good, but not four stars.

Cool collabs and woman-led hip hop but just didn't connect with me.

The 90's were my early parenting years so missed a lot of interesting stuff including Rap and R & B, but being on oldish child of the seventies (18 in'77) I would have probably erred toward Britpop rather than American music at this time. But what does Missy bring to the party here, well I like "Hit em wit da hee" with Lil' Kim. The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) is a good reworking of I can't stand the rain but my favourite track is "Pas de Blunt" who'd of thought those young lads from Birmingham UK would be so influential! An interesting exploration with some super production values from Timbaland

Never listened to this until today. It wasn't as fun as I thought it might be, the title track was fun but there were some bummers. I'd like to think that I could listen to anything by ME, but not all of this was intended for my ears... womp, womp.

A Lot of shout outs to timbaland and rightly so since the beats and production do shine. Otherwise less firepower than some of missys later stuff I’m more familiar with but I appreciate her range from dropping bars to soul/reggae. Solid features with lol Kim, Busta, Aliyah Sock it to me, the rain, pass da blunt

Busta rhymes doesn't actually bust any rhymes in that intro contrary to popular belief it's weird but through albums in this time period I can really see where Sonic Adventures Battle 2 DX got it's soundtrack, especially the Knuckles and Rouges sections. This just sounds like the Rouge levels but with lyrics Does sound a bit like Persona 4's style of music It was alright, sort of generic, but didn't hate it, probs a 3 star

Not really my favorite offering from Missy Elliott, but not bad considering this was earlier in her career. I really liked the beats, but the lyrics...could have been better.

Very enjoyable.

There some decent stuff in here - definitely of a time but it really drags after a while - could have done with some quality control and stripping back the number of tracks

Standard 90s Hip-hop to me. It's not bad but just sort of there, doesn't do much that other things haven't. Very radio friendly sound to me.

Beats, vocals, production are solid. Uncertain if essential though.

Classic Timbaland beatz and some surprising fresh rhymes and content from Missy that have really aged well. Part of her appeal is that she's not a pop star and doesn't need to go the Nicki Minaj/Cardi B route, so there's a lot more attention and emphasis on the music vs. the packaging.

This album is more soulful and laid back than some of her other ones. I didn't immediately get into it, but I see how influential it was/is.

Find early Missy a bit dull. And most of her albums. Some songs are good though

Good but Missy has better albums

It was ok

No suelo escuchar hip hop pero me ha gustado.

No need for it to be an hour long and 17 songs long. Appreciate what she did for R&B and especially for female rappers but wouldn't listen to it as anything more than background music on my GTA radio. Was between a 2 and a 3 for me but I'll give it a 3 because I like the vibe.

WHAT CAN’T MISSY DO? 💯

- feminism - makes me move

Another Missy Elliott. Not much to add to my comments on the 1st Missy E album we had.

Good but not my jam.

Enjoyed this. Gave it a couple of listens. Ridic production levels.

Never really been into Missy Elliott but I totally get that being a female rapper in the 90s was massively pioneering and, as a result, my score is largely on that basis. I like the Timbaland production but just don't find the album as a whole massively exciting. No bangers either. 6/10

Mit Don't Be Comin' In My Face direkt mal die Antwort auf z.B. Biggies Blowjob-Skit geliefert, Izzy Izzy Ahh so. Überhaupt Sex: natürlich auch hier wichtiges Ding, mit umgedrehter Macker-Perspektive (Sock It To Me). Warum eigentlich immer Macker-Perspektiven/Posen?

Bastante tranquilo. Me ha recordado al The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lo volveré a escuchar.

Its was aight, I have never been all the way through a Missy Album, same problem as most rappers, they sticking to the same 5 subjects.

I appreciated that this was good music, was a good uplifting vibe for me after bank hol Tues. But wasn't wholly my thing - hard to know how to rate.

Supa Dupa Fly is the debut studio album by American rapper Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, released July 15, 1997 on The Goldmind and Elektra Records. The album was recorded and produced solely by Timbaland in October 1996, and features the singles, "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Sock It 2 Me", "Hit Em wit da Hee" and "Beep Me 911". Guest appearances on the album include Busta Rhymes, Ginuwine, 702, Magoo, Da Brat, Lil' Kim, and Aaliyah. The album was recorded in just two weeks. Supa Dupa Fly brings together elements of hip hop, dance, R&B, electronic music, and soul.[10][11] Music critic Garry Mulholland described Timbaland's production as "eschewing samples for a bump 'n' grind electronica, strongly influenced by the digital rhythms of dancehall reggae, but rounder, fuller, fatter".[12] AllMusic described it as consisting of “lean, digital grooves [...] packed with unpredictable arrangements and stuttering rhythms that often resemble slowed-down drum'n'bass breakbeats."[10] Elliott's raps were described as “full of hilariously surreal free associations that fit the off-kilter sensibility of the music to a tee.”[10] According to author Mickey Hess, the album's lyrical content "reveals Elliott's complex, creative, and challenging discussion about womanhood; her demand for respect, respect for her personal voice and her desire for fulfilling intimacy with lovers and friends".[13] The album's opening track, "Busta's Intro", features rapper Busta Rhymes as a town crier warning of a "historical event about to unfold".[13] "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" contains a sample of Ann Peebles' 1973 song "I Can't Stand the Rain".[14] "Pass da Blunt" is partly based on the song "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth.

Loved hearing timbalands beats from back in the day, there were some bangers but overall not a huge fan.

A good album that brought the unique sound of Missy Elliot to the masses(and brought the amazing production of Timbaland). This is a great intro to both their sounds and has some great hits too("hit em with the hee", "sock it 2 me") really good debut album.

Ok hip hop

It's nice to have some variety, as I'm not the biggest fan of 90's Hip Hop. I didn't dislike the album as much as I expected to. I found a lot of the instrumental choices very interesting, and it made for a good listen.

Really not my kind of music. It was catchy but I couldn't wait for it to be over.

90s albums please be shorter I'm begging you

Lekker muzikale beats, fijne samples van bijv. trompet tussendoor (Sock it 2 me). Tekst lekker generiek cool doen, maar soms ook gevoeligere nummers (Best Friends). Overall vooral muzikaal een aantrekkelijk album, de teksten kan ik niet echt relaten. Ondanks dope beats meer achtergrond muziek voor mij.

A bit boring. And maybe too cool for me. Also seems a bit childish. "Beep beep get in the jeep" and "I'm such a good rapper". Although I recognise the impact and influence this album has had on popular music

Not my thing. Why are there so many songs "feat." someone?

Just Supa Fly but go Missy

Not really a fan of missy but those timberland beats as smooth as hell

Looooooool

Missy Elliott is iconic but no real standouts to me other than "The Rain."

Good.... but a little too much timberland on this one. His name was mentioned in practically every song.

I could say this album is as little good as to be decent, but I could never believe my own words. It's listenable. That's what it is. It doesn't feel tiring, at least not all the time, but still it's a very bland record that combines hip-hop with contemporary rhythm & blues in a way that sounds insipid and with no clear direction. Some songs aren't bad, at least they have nice ideas. But the development of the album is very poor and it lacks of some clear direction. Not to add that it sounds like the average hip-hop album, modern in production for the time, but still pretty uninteresting. So, at least it is listenable. Because it's an album that doesn't seem any good, and one that is not memorable at all.

Listening to this album for the first time in the summer of 2026, it is clear that I am hearing it through the lens of everything that followed. Having listened to numerous albums released over the last three decades that were heavily influenced by "Supa Dupa Fly", and admitting a general unfamiliarity with the wider hip-hop genre, the innovations here are somewhat lost on me. Furthermore, this particular style blends heavily with modern R&B - a genre that simply does nothing for me. Stripped of its original historical context, and operating within a musical territory that is far from my usual preference, I am left with the music exactly as it hits my ears today. Frankly, I am not struck by it. Like many hip-hop releases, the album suffers from an excessive runtime, and its predominantly slow pace results in a rather dull listening experience. It failed to elicit any visceral response or emotional connection - not even intense dislike. Ultimately, it was a two-star experience. 373/1001 199/373 albums reviewed were new to me.

Enjoyed the first half a fair bit. The second half sounds completely phoned in, and that's 30 whole minutes. I blame compact discs.

++: Beep Me 911, Bite Our Style (Interlude), Don't Be Commin' (In My Face), Izzy Izzy Ahh, Why You Hurt Me +: Hit 'Em wit da Hee, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Pass da Blunt, I'm Talkin', Gettaway, Missy's Finale +-: Busta's Intro, Best Friends -: Sock It 2 Me, They Don't Wanna Fuck wit Me, Friendly Skies, Busta's Outro 4,5/10

Just really not for me.

Nothing specfically supa, dupa or fly about this release

Not really my vibe, bit boring

I like hip-hop, but this bored me

“Get Ur Freak On” is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Something you hope comes on during a night out and it should be that. This song is not on this album. Overall oretty weak, I’m not a fan of R&B. 2/5

Didn't really click with me. I can't lie, the continues mention of Timbaland really started to annoy me. I do like some tracks from Missy Elliott, but never listened to a full album before. Maybe there's an album from her that I'll like more, but this really wasn't for me. All that being said, Missy is a huge deal in her genre and should get the credit for what she's done, Supa talented. Fav Track: The Rain

Niet voor mij

Ei oo mun musaa mutta arvostan silti.

It’s a decent first album in that it establishes a sound that I like, especially the beats. But the songs didn’t really impress me too much, there was a certain sameness to them. One song I mostly liked was The Rain until it went on and refused to stop. And that’s the overall problem with this album there’s so many times where I just wanted to stop.

Supa dupa finde ich anders, etwas zu soulig für mich

I don't understand why this chick has two albums on the list. It's very standard R&B that you'd hear during the credits of Space Jam or something. You're meant to hear this in the background of a house party, not in an isolated setting where it's meant to actually be critically evaluated.

Nothing spectacular, sounded monotonous.

I really wanted to enjoy this album. Based on the cover, title, and expectation of the overall vibe, I really thought that I was going to have a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately, it felt like there was too much going on and not enough room to breathe. It felt very much in your face, giving you no space to truly appreciate the music. I can see why it would be enjoyable for some, but this just wasn't for me. The beats and backings are so cool, and it was just disappointing to me how the tracks sounded as a whole with everything incorporated and mixed together. This was also a long album to listen to top to bottom, and I much prefer a 40ish minute album, as that's not too long. This would have even worked better with slightly fewer songs that were longer in length...

Alright I guess if it was a soundtrack to a cartoon. Decent beats.

I would have picked another Missy Elliott album. The one with Get Your Freak On.

Inoffensive 90s rap which is not too energetic and not too full of anything to be honest.

just ok for me! some nice sounds and pretty groovy, is that the word? I think when it comes to Missy Elliott I just had to be there when she was IT

Revisited this one to make sure I really didn’t like it (was on a road trip the first time and distracted). Nope. Still doesn’t do it for me. Excellent production and she commits to her style, but it’s not her best work.

Supa dupa supa crap. What’s up the with Busta Rhymes intro. Whatever happened to ladies first? And on her own record. That’s 3 big wide misdemeanors along with putting this album on the list and er… Misdemeanor herself.

not a fan, but the "Rain" song was a huge hit for her. may not be for me, but i cant discount it being a huge like for others.

Not my cup of tea. Wasn't offensive and she actually thank people at the end

Es un álbum de bastante chill, a pesar del rap, se siente fluido. Puedo entender porque la producción de timbaland resalta tanto

I realize it's not my genre but that bored me to tears.

Jaa, eipä kauheasti jäänyt mitään mieleen tästä.

Missy has always been a whole of Meh for me.

Það skemmtilega í þessari tónlist er vanalefa öll góðu lögin sem eru sömpluð. Stundum virkar það vel. Oftast er það bara endurtekið bít og svo einhver svona sjálfumglaður söngur ofan á. Mér finnst þetta bara ekkert spes.

I really wanted to enjoy this. I'm a Missy fan. I came up with her music in the 2000s, but this album felt like she just hosted other people. A lot of it didn't feel like HER, like Missy was the star. And I really respect her as an artist. She's amazing at what she does. I gave this album 3 chances and it still turned out as a 2 for me. Supa dupa disappointing.

pero que no nos gusta el rap

No siento que sea memorable. Idkkk, I really wanted me to like it, and it was OK. But just ok, tbh.

Never listened to missy and this felt pretty underwhelming. There was what 2 beats? Timbaland do better

Content in the songs are too repetitive. A bit boring.

A bit easy to have in the background

Que album mas aburrido y no es culpa de la capa de Missy Elliott porque ella rapea super bien yo culpo a Timbaland por el bodrio que fue 4/10

Idk it was fine nothing really stood out to me

Izzy izzy zaaaa naaaaaah no thanks

oui bon meh

Not the worst, but no thank you.

influential, yes, but the absolute gratuitous profanity always bothers me.

I’ll start with the positives. She’s got a great singing voice and the beats/production by Timbaland are consistently good. I liked the song, The Rain. It was kinda fun hearing the pseudo-cover of “Pass the Dutchie.” The negatives… almost every time there was a feature I found it really irritating. After the first three tracks, I wasn’t sure how much of this record I was going to be able to take. The best was later in the album with the track, “Gettaway.” There are definitely some clever lines throughout, but I generally don’t want to listen to the things she’s singing about. This was at its worst during Why You Hurt Me and I’m Talkin’, both of which I had to skip before the end. This feels like an important album because Missy seems to be announcing her presence — showing she belongs right at the center of the male-dominated rap scene. I respect it, but it’s not my thing.

Like Missy, not a fan of this. It sounds like she is still working out her sound. There is signs of her greatness with some good flow and the production is excellent, but its too messy and bland rnb.

This is not a good album and has not aged well 2 stars.

I want to give Missy Elliot high marks here. It's refreshing to see a woman do well in hip hop. Especially one that isn't reliant on sex appeal in an era where sexism dominated the genre. However, despite all the big name features and Timbaland production, I just lost interest in this album about halfway through.

5/10 - this just didn't click, prefer Missy Elliot's post-2000 stuff

Another hip-hop album that feels kind of repetitive. Not very interesting for my taste. And definitely too long.

Solid debut album.

I have to be honest. I though this album was just okay. I would've loved to hear Missy have her own work. Just her and no one else. But sadly, most of the features do the heavy lifting on this album. Will I go back and listen to this in the future? Maybe. But for now, it's just okay. Highlights: Sock It 2 Me The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) Friendly Skies

The beats in this album were okay and mostly listenable, but I still wasn't a fan of this. I know Missy went on to get big, and this is a good start (more r&b influences than I expected). This genre really isn't my thing, however.

For the first couple of tracks I was quite enjoying this one. It just couldn’t hold my attention in the long run. There was a stretch of 2-3 tracks, might’ve been more lol, where I basically tuned out completely and forgot I was listening to this. Overall definitely not the worst album ever, just not for me.

Ei oikein mun juttu

Missy Elliott is decent but she doesn't need multiple entries on this list.

I was looking forward to some Missy. Missy is great ar what she does, and should be recognized, but this isn't the one. All the shout outs to promote Timbaland are valid, he's a great producer. Sock it 2 Me is fun. The Rain is a great track, after that not much stands out.

its alright fav song: Izzy Izzy Ahh

It’s not that it’s bad it’s the nonstop use of the talk box and utters that ruin many of the songs. It’s otherwise a typical 90s hip hop album.

2 1/2. I really wanted to like it more.

2.3 1x +videos

160/1001 First listen. I do enjoy things of the supa dupa variety but anything fly is none of my business. 4/10

An overlong and bland album.

Album #97 Missy Elliott: Supa Dupa Fly I’m not a big rap guy, but this album wasn’t too bad. For the most part, the singing was nice, and the beats were solid. However, the reason this album is getting a low rating is that the lyricism was just completely eye-roll-inducing. Is it a part of Timbaland’s contract that for every beat he makes, the rapper needs to have multiple bars on the track, glazing him and the beat? It felt like every song Elliott was waxing lyrical about how great the beat and Timbaland were, instead of actually rapping on the beat. It’s like when the cool kid agrees to hang out with you and your lame friends, so you just compliment him the whole time in hopes that he won't leave. Not to mention the fact that she seemed to have to constantly keep reassuring herself that she, too, was great and worthy of being on Timbaland’s beats. The most egregious example of this is from the song “I’m Talkin’” in which this is an actual lyric: “I’m such such a good rapper, I’m such such a good rapper”. As the age-old adage says: Show, don’t tell. Anyway, this album was a fine 90s rap album with some decent tracks, but she really isn’t the lyricist she thinks she is, and it definitely is not an essential listen. Best Tracks: The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Sock It 2 Me, Best Friends Worst Track: I’m Talkin’ Score out of 10:5

Same issue I have with all these 90s rap albums. Individual songs are all enjoyable. Album is so samey and hard to get through

All the respect to Missy, and from a history perspective, this was a very important album. But from a listening perspective, this is very boring and one note.

Can’t lie. At an hour run time this was a tough listen. Very dated and also bloated with skits. Missy upped her game later, but this particular time effort is not worthy of this list.

Not for me sorry, didn’t really enjoy this one. I suppose The Rain is ok but doesn’t make up for the rest of the album.

Not one of my personal favourites. Unfortunately not improved with age either

I know Missy was on this, but not as much as I would've expected.

Mediocre at its best points, which are few. The R&B is awful and the hip-hop is nothing remarkable.

Pop music, whether hip hop or any other style, is like muzak or hotel "art". It creates a mood, a wall of sound, but it doesn't offer much of anything substantive - emotionally, spiritually, or intellectually. Most pop genres, however, can lean on a catchy melody. By foregoing melody, however, hip hop offers only rhythm and lyrics. So it's always astonishing to me that so much hip hop, including this, is so lyrically banal and vacuous. I love Missy's singing voice. I'd love to hear her work up a collection of songs with a group of musicians rather than engaging in these silly projections of ego set to computerized hum and drone.

1/17 bekannt 5/10 Beste Songs: the rain, Izzy Izzy ahh, pass da blunt

This didn't do anything for me

Music did indeed make me lose control

I just don’t have the patience to listen to the few good songs from Missy’s albums

This was very uninspiring. Overly long and dull. I liked the brass riff of 'Sock it 2 Me' and that was about it.

Якось занадто довго

I like the beats and the vibe, but lyrically, I feel like Missy Elliott just isn't a great rapper. Too many songs about smoking weed and how her and Timbaland have the best style.

I'm sorry auntie, but this album has a lot of misses. Some great beats and tracks, but mostly filler/meh tracks. Absolutely fucks as a debut album though. Wish it held up better with time.

A little more low energy than I was hoping from Missy Misdemeanor Elliot. Nothing outstanding for me, except for the fact that every new rap album I hear, I recognize a sample from a rap album years down the road. Friendly skies is sampled heavily on Brias interlude by Drake.

if you can read polish, the title is much more accurate

My goal is to never listen to this again.

First Listen; 2.5; For whatever reason, this really didn't grab me. Interesting enough and enjoyable in places, but at the same time felt like the fun hooks and moments were far apart. Favorite Track: Gettaway

This record has many highs and lows, which ultimately make it just "okay". Favourite Track(s): Friendly Skies, Best Friends Least Favourite Track(s): The Rain, Pass Da Blunt

I like Missy Elliott but not a huge fan of her music.

Previously rated: #402 - Under Construction (2/5) *********************************** Album #1,042 I didn't care for her 2002 album. This one is five years earlier, and hopefully better, but I'll be honest -- braggadocios women are very unappealing to me, and I can tell from the album title and her pose on it, there won't be a great deal of humility here. Yeah, there wasn’t. It wasn’t *as* filthy as I thought it would be but this ego rap/r&b stuff just doesn’t appeal at all. I was thinking how strange a Beatles album would be if they name dropped George Martin as many times as she does Timbaland here.

Eh, it was fine but not something I’m looking to hear again

Mediocre rap from that era. There were a few hits, a bunch of filler, and some really cringy skits. For the most part, this is just Timbaland.

I didn't get to listen to the whole album, but that's fine. I get the gist. It wasn't really for me.

The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)

Some good samples in tracks but very much of the f and n brand of rap, tiresome.

I expected much more from this album. The lyrics were never that grabbing, and the beats lacked a much-needed energy that holds this album back in a tough way. Some decent moments but a lot to move past. Top tracks: Sock It 2 Me, Friendly Skies

Cool, and could see this growing on me. But not something I see myself turning to again and again.

missy elliott has some bangers but they weren't on this album

Back in the day I paid about £20 for this piece of s*** on CD (american import) just because I liked Timberland and the single "The Rain". Not that i'm in any way bitter about it....... and I didn't learn any lessons from it either.

Skits and dross bury the couple of bangers.

Was excited to get an album by one of the best female rappers to do it. Instead the whole album, minus two tracks are all just forgettable R&B trash. Why did this album make the list?

Plenty of spoken word hip-hop and R&B with some choice backing tracks.

90s Rap, may have been a step forward to have a successful woman in a male dominated field, but that's doesn't make me like the music.

It’s amazing that an album this long has zero memorable songs, choruses, bridges, or even musical refrains. It wasn’t horrible but why was this even included? Not my taste at all

Hmm, many of the 'older' hip hop albums on this journey I have enjoyed. But will I like this, given that I have not enjoyed - have actively disliked - the little I've heard from Missy till now? She never seemed like a serious rapper to me - her music videos all having some dance routine. Dance routine = manufactured pop = no cred. Another mark against her is that she seems to have only influenced some of the worst music and worst people of today. But perhaps this album has some good stuff. At least it doesn't seem to have that awful freak on song. Well. It's painfully formulaic, predictably repetitive, and like the worst of female led 90s RnB, it feels robotic and too percussive. Some people like that and that's fine. I suppose you could dance to it if you were of such a mind. But yeah, not very good, lacks the quality I expect to be included on such a list, but it's probably fair that some Missy album or other appears here given her impact. This one tho? Bland, barren, tuneless. One final note - those 'beats' you hear people inexplicably praising, you know, by far the easiest most talent-free part of music creation? They sound like a toddler gently tapping two plastic spoons together. Beats, my arse.

I like the melodic flourishes the best, but much of the album seems designed just to punish you w the same beat or motif over and over

Not too sure about this album. I can be wrong but most tracks have the same bpm? and very similar beats/hooks.

Meh? It wasn't really anything that interested me.

Not my thing. Not actively irritating but not my thing.

Kinda doesnt do it for me much. Like she's a great singer but im less stoked on the rapping she does. Its serviceable I guess but thats not a huge endorsement. And the biggest issue sadly is timberland. Ive liked some of his stuff before but this is so incredibly basic. I dont know fruity loops but I bet give me like 2 days I could recreate some of not all of these beats. Its nothing in the worst possible ways. Dude got alot of hits and good on him but I can tell in a bad way. Mass market bullshit. And why does she constantly brag about having this wet towel of a producer making this shit? It just doesn't make sense. At the end of the day its alright. Alot here I dont like though. The slow songs are great, specifically my best friend and friendly skies. Great songs. Other than that id say its less than ideal

Not a big fan but I'm not averse to this. If it came on the radio, I wouldn't turn it off but can't pick out anything to play on repeat.

The beats on this are great but I never really cared for Missy's style. So over all the album started pretty good but as it went on it got kind of boring.

Havde det sjovt mens jeg lyttede til den, men det er også lidt hurtigt glemt igen. Mere relevant for Timbalands karriere end Missys, egentlig

Didn't actively hate this until I saw I was only halfway through.. No stand out tracks, but just a lot of 90s R'n'B.. I'm not sure I got who produced this? Could I get his name again? Tender Man? Tindermayn? 🫠

I’m sure this has a place in history but just doesn’t work for me. The music doesn’t really stand out and lyrics don’t relate. 2/5

Přeskakovala jsem, není to úplně můj styl, hip hop.

Tolerable for the most part but this isn't my thing at all.

Didn't grab me

Slightly groovier than I expected and clearly influential - just a little bit too long

Can definitely see how this is good for people that like rap. Just doesn’t click for me.

When you invite all your popular friends over to your party it doesn't always guarantee a good time. There's bound to be some highlights but not every moment is fab — especially if some of them have been telling the same joke since the late 90s. That out of the way, Timbaland's now classic production set the table for Missy (and her friends) and that combo is why the album sounds as good as it does well over 25 years later.

Love Miss Elliott but this was a pretty weak record. She really stepped up her game on later records. The only memorable sample and song was "The Rain". 2 star.

I only knew The Rain (which I don't like) going into this. I found the whole thing really slow, boring.and repetitive. Not even the appearance of Busta, a man whose voice genuinely makes me smile, saved this. I didn't hate it, but have no desire to ever listen to it again. Would get a 1.5 but I can't justify a 1 so it's getting a default 2. 2/5

Довольно стандартное поп-рэп. Лучшая песня - Sock It 2 Me.

Its no for me,this album.

The album is ok, just ok. I wanted to like it given that it was her first album but it's pretty forgettable

From the music of Missy Elliott’s that I’d heard prior to this, I was expecting risks, creativity and excitement. This albums wasn’t any of that. All pretty dull and forgettable.

Missy Elliott's raps and song arrangements are a bit more palatable to listen to then your typical hip hopper, but her album still suffers from the inexcusable bloat. This album is not tight, but it could have been if the intro and outro by Busta Rhymes and about half the songs (particularly the back half of the record where it seriously drags) were cut. Lyrically speaking, the subjects are a tad more universal and relatable than was typical for this era. Missy seems to focus on love, passion, and female pride/ego/narcissism. The album title comes from the track "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" which misuses a sample from Tina Turner's excellent song "I Can't Stand the Rain". I feel like the sample added nothing creative or necessary for the track and it just detracted from Elliott's lyrical skill. The song also detracts from the flow of the album in general. While I can be convinced that Missy Elliott might belong on this list, I can not be convinced that this is the album of hers that belongs on here. Maybe MISS E...SO ADDICTIVE would have been a better choice. I cannot be convinced that more than one album of hers belongs on this list. I think the most notable thing on this album is how forward Timbaland's production design and sound moved hip hop. Nothing sounded like this at the time, but very soon after, it became far more common.

Some ok slower songs but not for me.

The list would've been good with one Missy Elliott album...and not this one.

Not a fan

Not bad, but definitely not my favorite work of Missy's. What makes Missy Eliott special is that her best music is pretty unique and catchy, it doesn't sound like it follows the normal R&B formula. This however sounds pretty generic compared to her later work and leans heavily on featured artists.

Not a fan of the genre but she can “sing”.

Listened to a couple of tracks. Not my style

The singles are great, a real time capsule, Timbaland time.

Hmmmmm

Extremly repetetive after 5 songs. really didn't need to be 1h. Not bad but nothing wow about it either. also think this is the second album on this list...

It's not my cup of tea

eh not really for me

Wanted to like it, but it didn’t grab me

She doesn’t hit her straps for an album or so. You can see what she’s doing but I didn’t really like it.

The album, while good, was slow and kept the same tempo throughout. Would have liked a bit more variety.

You gotta put some respect on Missy. Ask anyone to rattle off as many female rappers from the 90s as they can -- who are they going to come up with? Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott...and the list ends? Brutal. She broke a lot of ground with this album, against a lot of odds. All of that being said, I gotta be honest -- this is not the best hip-hop I've ever listened to. I think she really came in to her own a bit later in her career, and while this was a pivotal record, I don't necessarily think it's extraordinary. Sorry Ms. Misdemeanor. Fave songs: - Hit 'Em wit da Hee - The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) (shoutout Ann Peebles!) - Beep Me 911 - Pass da Blunt - Friendly Skies - Izzy Izzy Ahh - Gettaway

No standouts, not for me

Boring! Why do these hip-hop albums have to be so loooong?!

Some cool stuff but not too convinced

I had this on in the background while cooking and completely forgot it was on for about an hour and a half, which I think is about as apt a criticism as I can give.

This is okay. Not great, but its okay. I just don't get how we could call this her album when this album is just made up of features (11 songs on a 17 song album, yes I counted). I don't mind features either, rappers do it all the time but to have more than half of it being features at that point is ridiculous. But it could also be a tad bit boring too, like it is a record that I just didn't really find that appealing. I know that Missy Elliott is considered to be high up when it comes to respectable rappers, but I didn't really find the appeal. Her beats and flow are just way too mellow and dull. Yeah, just boring in my opinion. Favorite Tracks: Hit 'Em wit da Hee, Sock It 2 Me, Pass da Blunt, I'm Talkin' Rating: 2.5/5

Bam biddly bam. Bam biddly biddly biddly biddly, and I can’t stress this enough, biddly bam.

did not get her freak on

Nice beats but I need to understand tnt culture more to get more out of it.

Not really my thing

I did not like. Boring.

sorry missy elliott not my vibe at all 2.5/5 6.85/10...

nope, not my style.

Timbaland's production is great but overall it's an average 90s rap album. It's overhyped and you could question it's place on the list, especially when there is another Missy album on the list. Runs too long and has too many duds. 2/5.

Não é meu estilo, achei mmuito pop

Some great flows but not really my thing

it loses so much steam by the end of the album.

I quite like some bits but it makes me feel absolutely nothing at all

This isn’t my kind of my music, and it’s not what I expect from Missy Elliot. This is a firmly 90s vibe album, and pretty indistinct from other artists doing a similar style. It’s a shame because Missy Elliot deserves to be on the list given her influence on female rap/hip hop artists. This album doesn’t challenge the listener, it’s too long and it’s too soft and smooth. I expect Missy’s music to be all sharp angles and defiance. She is so much better than this album would suggest.
