Supa Dupa Fly

Not a huge fan of this one. Repetitive, generally uninteresting - it hasn't aged all that well. There were a few sticky rhymes that I liked, but other than that, not my favorite. 2/5.

I really wanted to like this album. There are some great classic songs that get sampled but this comes across as a mediocre and dated album 2.5/3

Missy does what popular artists like Meghan and Minaj do now but with more fines and less brain rot. Still not my cup of tea. This is a long album and after a while I became desensitized to it and it just became background noise. 5/10

This is truly a huge let down for me as I generally think positively about missy Elliot and I have some fond memories of her songs. “The Rain” is one of those songs that I remember. The features on this album nor timbalands beats could save this album for mediocrity.

Awesome album. I feel like Missy does and doesn’t get the respect she deserves. I think people know how good and influential she is and I don’t hear her music enough. Certainly not as much as I hear some of her contemporaries. I’m glad I listened to this.

Another female rapper, which is great and Missy is very influential of more females joining the exciting world of rap, but why is it boring, uninteresting and way toooo long? The beats and production are fine, but I was expecting more, since there's been so much rap and hip-hop lately on this list, I'm expecting something that is special and will stand out, but it seems to be more of the same. Ho hum...

Midsy Elliot

Missy Elliott is iconic, but I don't think this is the entry I would put in from her catalogue. You can feel a bit of her style, but each song feels a bit underbaked and goes on for far too long. 3/5

This album definitely has a feel to it. I really liked some of the songs, but I tried listening to this while I was lifting weight and it wasn't a good fit. I'm on the fence about 3 or 4 stars, and trying to account for my poor listening voice, but will go with a 3. However this is an album, and artist that I will try to listen to more.

This wasn't bad! But some of the lyrics were very cringe to me.

Missy Elliot has always been a titan of rap. On this album, though, it showed more of her production genius than her quirky rap mastery. The two songs with Timbaland were ethereally smooth. Beat Friends with Aaliyah was R&B candy. The problem though is the collabs at the time were revolutionary, but now feel dated. Her best was still to come.

Way more R&B than I expected. I had never listened to this one before. I wanted more rap as I owned and have listened to Missy’s later albums especially Under Construction. I might have to revisit this one to truly get it.

It's a fine album. Feels more r&b than hip hop, not that is a bad thing. Some bangers for sure, though the album as a hole doesn't give an especially fascinating listening experience. It a vibe, nonetheless. Would listen again while doing something

It's pretty hard to disentangle the greatness of Missy Elliott as a rapper from the greatness of Timbaland as a producer. Luckily, we don't have to. This album is great. All the beats are on point, with lots of super-danceable stuff. Missy brings life to every song 4/5

Very vibey album. Definitely has its moments and there are a couple all-timers on here (The Rain is amazing), but I’d classify most of this as really dope background music. Slightly above a 3. I’ll prob put it on next time I’m high or something.

Another 90s R&B / rap album I don't like, with dull backing tracks and a ridiculous number of guest artists.

A thoroughly enjoyable album. No single song really pierced my soul or anything, but this felt of a time without feeling dated or campy.

I had my reserves when I saw I had to listen to this album. Luckily, it went better than expected. The first 10 - 12 songs are enjoyable. Great set of guests, good vibes, Missy dropping lines with style. However, it is too long. I don't know if she needed 17 songs to communicate all her ideas. Maybe 13 were enough? Well, who knows, I am not Timbaland.

This album was better than I thought it was going to be, based on my memories of the singles and the fact that I really didn't like this style of hip-hop and R&B at the time. However, I think it stands up pretty well, especially the first half. The second half of the album started getting too silly and off-the-rails for me with some of the music samples sounding like someone making random mouth noises or choruses/hooks that relied too much on "the preposterous." I can definitely understand why other people would really be into this album, though.

I don't think I'd choose to ever listen to this but not in a bad way. Not my style but she's got a cool voice and the R&B/Rap style productions/song switch ups are pretty cool. I know her hits and definitely like a few but this is a crazy massive album which is impressive enough on it's own and it's her first.

Not bad by any means, just sort of flat. Was never a big fan of the mid 90s rubber suit rap and M. Elliott has always rubbed me the wrong way. 2.5/5

My opinion on Missy over the years has never really changed; she's at her best when she has complete control over the tracks. I've never cared for the features she goes with (some of the Timbaland collabs are alright). This is a solid debut that doesn't overstay its welcome, even at an hour runtime. I do wish some tracks hooked me in a bit more, as a lot of songs here get pretty samesy.

It’s interesting hearing Missy operate at a more subdued frequency before she achieved supa-dupa-star status; at times this sounds more like a showcase of Timbaland’s production than it does Elliot’s presence.

Great beats, love Missy. Some songs were just OK though. Still - fabulous artist. The Rain is a super good song though.

As bored as I’ve been listening to any album on this list so far.

I know a little bit of Missy's work thanks to my age-range and my wife (who is a big fan). This was a pretty decent album, but it was much slower paced than I was expecting. The beats and rhythms were pretty solid, but I wasn't as much impressed by the words except for a few songs. Hip hop isn't my jam anyway - so it was going to take a lot for me to really like this. But it was okay. Favorite tracks: Sock It 2 Me, Beep Me 911, Pass da Blunt, Don't Be Commin' (In My Face), I'm Talkin'.

90’s female rap is dope! Enjoyed the shit out of it!

Missy again. I think better than her last one, this was a bit more soulful. But still not my bag baby.

Solid production and was an innovative/influencial album of the time period. Great inclusion for this list, but nothing really stuck out to me to make me want to revisit.

I think missy could've made some real proper all time greats but was held back to some extent by the industry expecting her to be tied into the mellow rnb side of things. This is almost there and has tracks that would be at home on an all time great hip hop album but the whole tracklist doesn't quite get there and that's super dissapointing to me because Missy had the ability if she'd been allowed the freedom that other artists were at the time. That being said this album is still a great time and a really enjoyable time capsule for this period

I was in-between a 2 and 3 start rating, but didn't think this album was on par with the albums I've rated 2, so I went 3. There are a few good songs on this album but most of the others are pretty uninteresting. Not necessarily bad, but I was definitely checked out for a decent amount of the album.

I really like the couple songs off this album, but a lot of the tracks felt like filler. I also didn't like how the vocals are so quiet in the mix, maybe that was just the style of the time.

This girl is waaaay too far up her own ass. Ya got one good song; Pass da Blunt. Other than that, it’s an hour of Missy on Missy and how supadupafly her CRAPpin is. Won’t be listening to anything from her again. Mout. (0.7*s)

Not my usual, bit average and repetitive

She's so much more than just a rapper. Great voice, very good songs, even beyond the ones I already knew (The Rain, Sock it To me). Great featured guests that added to her songs, didn't take away. Well produced. I don't know that I would ever put it on, I just know I wouldn't run Missy Elliott off.

Great album!

This is a classic...for its production and uniqueness. And within the album, although she touts her "rapping," I think she knows it. She brings a style and it feels largely improvised, but it's a great groove. Also, it means my man Busta made the list. Which is validating some.

I enjoyed it, but no truly great tracks.

In a fake patois Missy Elliott says I got the rhymes to make you jump, jump, jump. And when she does rap this is true. Missy has bars. Unfortunately the majority of this album is r&b slow jams. Based on my limited knowledge of missy elliott and the album cover I was expecting a hip hop album. I was disappointed. The beats are dope though.

This would be a 4 if it didn’t suffer from that early 00s production bloat and Timbaland’s one trick pony production. This sounds just like an early Justin Timberlake album.

Missy has good flow but both of her albums on this list, which I've had served to me in quick succession, leave me a bit cold. I saved a few tracks, but as albums they don't really seem to land as something more than the sum of its parts. That said, I liked the production on this and I think both albums are 3.5s for me so I'm rounding this up to 4.

After a while the songs began to blur into each other, and the raps got less interesting. I really liked the R&B background music, even though it sounds manufactured.

‘Supa Dupa Fly’ has a strong rnb flavour to it, which was a bit unexpected, but welcome. Timabland’s beats are solid, and Missy is a competent rapper. Together they complement each other nicely and are quite the dynamic duo, making for an understated but satisfying record.

Yeah, this was fun. Dirty, bolshy and well-delivered, with great production behind it. It suffers a little from length and gets a bit bogged down, but I can totally see why it's a popular album in the genre.

missy!!! i'm glad her debut album made the list, though this album was just ok to me. i was impressed with the variety of artists guesting, especially for a debut album, and what the different artists brought. not to mention the genres because it wasn't straight hip hop. but what i like most is how revolutionary this must have been in 1997 to have a woman hip hop artist debuting with a huge album!

This debut album from Missy Elliott is fine. Not great, but fine. The music is listenable, but this is definitely not where you will find Missy's most influential work. To me, this is an entry that could have been replaced with a more iconic Missy Elliott album, but this was instead chosen for its historical significance. Missy was part of a movement of validating and legitimizing the existence of female rappers in the mainstream, and this debut album represents that big push. That said, this album relies heavily on features and in my opinion, doesn't show off Missy's true prowess that she developed following this album. Missy's inclusion in this project is absolutely warranted. But I question the choice of this album. A weak 3.

Hip hop that has a sound I enjoy.

I always forget how R&B Missy is. I have always thought of myself as a fan but have never really listened to a full album. I thought this was great and loved all the collabs with other artists.

Objective Pinnacle 90s hip-hop. Really, really cool to hear missy and timbaland this early in their careers, still honing their sounds. Star-studded features, but holds its own without them. This truly was the golden era of hip hop. Personal Missy falls into the category that many rappers fall into for me: not amazing or elite, but solid in their offering, adding to the collective mosaic of hip hop sounds. She and timb have put out some certified bangers in their time together. Grateful for that. However, this album comes down to timbaland for me. He is one of the most versatile and consistent producers in the hip-hop/r&b arena. I didn’t think I could love him any more, but then this amazing 90s sound. You can have your favorite hip-hop producers in your youth, but just like paying your taxes and getting your own place, maturity as a fan of the genre means embracing the fact that timb is just far more talented than your favorite.

Overall, a well done collaboration. At its height this album features well written lyrics and plays with syncopation and other rhythms while staying melodically enjoyable. On the other hand, 50% of the album is repetitive and uninteresting, and could be cut without significantly impacting the whole

Missy Elliot proves she can straddle two genres with this sensational blend of silky R&B singing and fluid rapping. Her rapping style is laid-back, conversational, and playful, transitioning effortlessly into soulful vocal hooks. The album includes a large roster of features, some better than others, that give the record a collaborative party vibe. Timbaland's tight production, employing classic drum samples and suave instrumentals, compliments Missy Elliot's vocal styles well, adding to the relaxed conversational vibe. Many tracks sound similar, and while more variable energy would have made the album more interesting, I can't fault the artist for sticking to her smooth guns. Stand out tracks include "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Beep Me 911", "Best Friends" and "I'm Talkin'".

I appreciate this album as a set of deep cuts from Missy that show where her signature style took root. The b-side of this does not get enough love IMO. Busta's intro / outro, and Timba's weak bars strewn about detract from Missy - though the context of this album (fresh talent / female rapper in the 90s) helps me appreciate them coming out to support and produce her debut album. It's important to remember that this album is of a time and genre where the production extended far beyond sound and into the realm of video! If you haven't watched the music videos for this album, you're missing out on a lot of (very 90s) creativity that starts to pull in that millennium hyperfutursim hype.

This would be a 5 if they cut a few songs. Common 90’s using every minute of space on a CD.

I’m a firm believer in the idea that any album that is given the accolade “must hear before you die” should be able to transcend the time in which it was made. This album has a song called “Beep Me 911” on it. I doubt there is a human alive today under the age of 35 who knows what that meant. Supa Dupa Fly is the posterchild for an album that is “of its time”. It’s not terrible, but it’s a 27 year old time capsule to my ears.

Four songs in and I'm very much enjoying this album, way more than I expected too. The rhymes are subtle and the music engaging for me. Her take on The Rain (sampes of I Can't Stand The Rain) is a hilight so far. I'm Talkin' is also a hilight. All in all a fine album, a good listen. An album that I may well return to. 3.5 stars

I was actually amazed that I liked several vs of the songs and the beats. I’m not a prude about language and swear words, I drop plenty of F bombs of my own. That said swearing, every other word just to swear, not a fan…. I know that this is just one sample of Missy Elliott’s work, so gave it 3 stars for that.

I am like the absolute opposite target audience for this album. The production is good but... just not my cup of tea i guess.

I want to like this one more than I do. I was the sweet spot for when this was released and it is definitely feeling nostalgic. Missy undeniably deserves to be on this list, just not for this album. Still pretty solid so 3.5.

Too much R&B on this album and not feelin it. Thought there would be more hip hop and stronger songs especially with Timberland producing. Had to strongly disagree with her claims on "I'm Talkin". Never delved deep into Missy but I expected better from this...let down.

I was too young for this upon release. I'm not hugely into hip hop but expect that Missy's debut was a breath of fresh air. A couple decent beats from Timbaland, a handful of known collaborators, and I expect a couple long standing hits (not sure though). I expect this album was cemented over time as Missy emerged as a long standing hip hop icon. 2.70 stars

It aint good 1

Even though Nicki Minaj has the "Queen of Rap" status, Missy Elliott paved the way before. Nicki paved the way for all current rappers, and Elliot paved the way for her. Compared to her contemporary artists, I like her way more than Lil Kim. Great album, very important and quite enjoyable. Close to a 3 for the weak ending. Those solo tracks were not the best. Expected Marc rating: 3

Another landmark rap album, but I was expecting to enjoy this more than I did. It's well produced and I like most of the features, but this one does suffer from runtime bloat. If most of the songs were a minute (or even two minutes) shorter I think it would feel less vibe-y and tiring. It's held together by Missy Elliott's charisma and the beats, but I found myself zoning out and being surprised at how much was left to listen to.

This was a solid 90's hip hop album. The production and beats were super solid and were definitely a highlight to me. None of the rap was bad but much of it played second fiddle to the beats in my opinion. Not many of the tracks stood out to me individually but the album as a whole was enjoyable. Not sure how much I will come back to this one but one im glad we got.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but I have no clue how this album is held in such high regard? I liked the vibe on production, but at times it felt like the snare drum on tracks was way too loud. Other tracks I had a hard time hearing the vocals. Maybe it was my speaker? Another example of an album that could have cut the fat off to keep it from dragging on. I liked the features more than missy Elliot most of the time. I don't think I plan on listening to this again.

i don’t understand how this lady is so popular

Ha I was just banging on about how great 1997 was, only yesterday. And here comes another one. Two in a row. More R'n'B than hip hop really, but it definitely hops. I maybe don't love every track, but they're all enjoyable. A bit overlong as an album though. Probably sags a little in the middle but it starts and ends STRONG.

It is Supa Dupa Fly. My wife grew up listening to Missy Elliott. This album sounds like a good time.

It started badly and got worse. And why does it have to be so long. And so bland. And so samey. This is so safe and non-threatening that I suspect the 'Midemeanor' in her name probably relates to jaywalking or some such stupid shit. Rubbish At least it doesn't have the skits that so many rap and hip-hop albums have.

Well she's terrific. Hee hee haa haa, no notes. I don't know how much of what I like of what Timbaland is doing in some of these, structurally, though he gets to use some cool effects. From my limited view, it feels like this is before rap entered its operatic Kanye era. Producers still happy to set up a groove and fade it out at the end. In this case, I feel he relies too heavily on the source sample to make a chorus happen.

Both the beats and flow on this record were shockingly dull and uninspired throughout. Nothing about this was any part good.

While Missy Elliott should definitely have a place in this compilation, I don't this this album is the work to remember. She's starting up and not yet at the top of her game. Also, this album has "The Rain (supa dupa fly)" on it - a track I absolutely cannot stand. Even omitting that track, the album would be merely "jolly good" and not "exceptional". The track is not omitted though, so....

Fucking dreadful

Was hoping for some interesting beats like get ya freak on, but this debut was paint by numbers terrible from start to finish. Missy Elliott didn't seem to feature for the first couple of songs, giving busta rhymes the chance to get on my nerves, really glad they brought him back at the end as well, cheers. At least I remember him I guess, couldn't tell you anything specific about the middle of the album except it was a struggle. Hard to see how this made the list.

Painfully boring. Who's stupid idea was it to end the album on a double track outro.

This did absolutely nothing for me. Felt very generic. Too much RnB for my taste. Big meh. Sorry Missy. Guess it was produced well, but that's Timberland..... I think I have to give this a 1, would never go back to listen to it again and don't remember enjoying any tracks particularly. Feel like she was trying to fit into the male rap clichés and I don't get it

Izzy Izzy Ah might be the worst song on the album. That was annoying. The best song was Best Friends. Overall, the beats and the singing were good. Best hip hop album so far

she's so cool

I asked for the cd of "Under Construction" for Christmas in 2002- I probably know every word to that album still. I'm less familiar with this one, I haven't listened to all of it outside of "The Rain" in a long time. I'm looking forward to listening to this today! Also, Missy in general is one of the hip-hop/R&B songwriting and production GOATs of the '90s/2000s. She changed the course of popular music and this album is what launched her and Timbaland into the stratosphere after years of writing and producing and featuring on hits for others. And, after a few rounds today I can say this album is great and it's going back in my rotation STAT. Super chill, futuristic, R&B/hip hop vibes - Missy sings as much or more than raps on this album, and even her bars are so musical. The biggest rap moments actually come from Lil Kim and Da Brat, both with killer features. You can tell she and Timb and their crew had a blast making this album. Some of Timbs coolest beats are in here, and he has production on every song. The first four songs were the singles and are all massive, Missy knows her way around a hook and has a long history of memorable/quotable lines. I also really enjoyed the duet with Ginuwine - "Friendly Skies" - the beat on that track is like the sweet friend of Pony. The duet with Aliyah is also great. And I mean, pass the blunt! I love how Missy does the spoken thank yous, but I'll admit that Busta Rhymes' intro and outro didn't add much for me. If you are familiar with '90s rap you can look at a list of other rap albums that came out in '97, the avant-pop leanings of this album will really stick out. She broke ground and built the foundation here.

The best parts of this album are someone else's work; the production isn't hers, the cameos from Busta, Lil Kim and Aaliyah outshine her, and it's not really that listenable overall.

Production is good, but the album overall is just a bit dull. Nothing that is in any way memorable, and it really drags. 2/5.

Very telling that the intro track on a female rapper's debut album in the 90's is named for and about a man 🙄 The bullshit misogyny Missy must have put up with in her early career, until she was proven a valid independent artist, my god. But she's tough and she has succeeded on her own terms, much respect to Missy. This may not be my preferred genre, but I can appreciate what she's done to open doors for so many other women in the industry and in this very sexist niche of it to boot. She is a powerful feminist icon, and I respect the hell of out her. I'm happy to see that she gets the final spoken word on this record.

I was ready for some good hip-hop when I got this album. It’s not my usual genre of choice but Missy Elliot is a name everyone knows so I was fairly confident this was gonna be a good one. Oh boy was I wrong. This album just fell flat and there honestly wasn’t a track on here that I enjoyed. For a genre that is rooted in lyricism it’s really disappointing when the lyrical content comes across so cringey because it’s way too obvious and direct. Lyricism aside, I thought maybe there would be some good beats. Nope. It was all so predictable and uninteresting. Super disappointing album overall.

Good production values

This is a decent album but it's also not really my thing. I didn't strongly dislike anything on it but also wasn't blown away by any of it. I think this is a solid debut though, so I'm going with a right down the middle 3/5. Standout Tracks: Sock It 2 Me, Beep Me 911, Pass Da Blunt, Friendly Skies

The album had good beats, got a little repetitive at the middle and end, but overall it was good hip-hop. I loved the vocals of Missy Elliot, the rap was very good and I loved the parts where she sang. I liked it, it's not a 5, but I liked it.

Chill and energetic all at once. Captures the moment in time but also timeless.

4 There's a reason why Missy Elliott is considered the Queen of Hip Hop and R&B, and this album is a great start as to why. Despite a few tracks are not as fantastic as others, this was an incredible debut with intensely captivating singing and rapping abilities through and through.

Timbaland just does not produce unsexy music. This album clearly not only let him really flex his talents and create a wave of influence in the R&B scene to come, it is equally highlighted as Missy Elliott. This album is great sonically, but Missy's attitude and talent are what makes this album such a landmark. This is how you become the Queen of Rap

Meh, not my bag.

If you're going to make an LP that's well over an hour long, it has got to have the energy and instrumental verve to justify that amount of listening time. This album has neither, Missy delivering some half-hearted bars on top of limpid beats that do little to capture one's attention. There were a few tracks where I was mildly interested in what was going on, but that was the extent of my enjoyment on this one.

Missy Elliots music with its sex positive attitudes was certainly something and the album is better than I thought after I just vaguely remembered the singles. However, it has the problems of many other hip hop albums that just deals with, well, hip hop. It's all very self-absorbed in a way and so I didn't care so much either when Beyoncé popped up. A different time, I guess. Nothing you really need to listen to.

It's just not that special. It had two hits. And they're fairly average hits. I suspect some of the hype for the record is that it is a little different. I appreciate that Missy isn't into the East/West thing or gangsta rap and the like. But that, in and of itself, does not make this amazing music. I understand that the production was also innovative, but it's not enough to take a song or album from good to great, and it certainly doesn't take a 3 star album to 4 or 5. It was a little different for its time, so props for that, but being different doesn't make it great. The hits are fairly average, and the rest of the album is actually kind of boring.

Enjoyed this one! Another Missy which is always great, I have def heard The Rain before.

Number two from Missy, and it's also great. I definitely liked the other album more, and it's mostly due to this one veering into a sonic territory between hip hop and R&B, a middle ground that's more laid back. I like when Missy raps, and when she does on here, it's excellent. But it feels like more of the tracks she's singing, the vibe is more laid back. Not bad at all, just not my preference. Still a great album when it's all said and done, I just want more of the rapping Missy, and we got that on the other album. Ironically, two of my favorite tracks on here were the Busta Rhymes intro and outro, that just got me fired up for a rap album. Alas, not quite. But still a great ride. Favorite tracks: Sock It 2 Me (classic), Busta's Intro/Outro, Beep Me 911, Pass Da Blunt, Friendly Skies, Izzy Izzy Ahh, Best Friends. Album art: Love this one. Missy kicking her feet up, looking supa dupa fly indeed. The pose, the font, this one feels iconic. Not sure how much weight it has in the annals of hip hop history but it's excellent. 4/5

Sample heavy, but really nice.

Totally surprised by this. It was much more interesting and approachable than i expected. It has that hip-hop, R&B, rap vibe, but Missy Elliott solidly delivers an edge/sassy tone, without being obnoxious or shocking (coming much later with WAP-oriented artists). This is really interesting and engaging.

Quite funky and it still sounds fresh after nearly 30 years, but to me it's too long, and musically is repetitive and not very interesting. 2.5/5.

Can’t say I’m a fan of Missy as an artist but Timbaland sets up some decent music and the guest appearances help add variety and interest to Missy’s mediocrity, ultimately resulting in a half decent album.

Not my scene but pretty fun. I liked all the shoutouts, very funny to start an album with someone introducing you.

It was alright, but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.

Early missy Elliot - let's see what this is all about . So far it's boring generic rnb hip hop. Couldn't finish it. Boring!

Surprisingly funky and more mellow than I expected. I quite liked it. Apparently a rapper named Magoo gave Elliot the nickname 'Misdemeanor' "because it's a crime to have that many talents". A misdemeanor is defined as: "an action that is slightly bad or breaks a rule but is not a crime". Talk about damning with faint praise. This album was just alright, I didn't think it was anything special and didn't necessarily set itself apart. I'm not knowledgeable on the history of women rappers, so I'm not sure where she stands in the timeline and if this was influential, so I'm not judging it based on that at all.

Busta Rhymes's intro and the following track are pretty fun listens, the instrumentals especially. Have found a few of the early tracks drag on a bit. A number of fun tracks on this album, although I feel like it could've closed on a stronger note. Overall, a solid debut album.

I don't really hear anything super ground breaking. It just sounds like a run of the mill 90's hip-hop/R&B album. Nothing really jumped out as really good, but also nothing terrible either.

I love Missy, and Timbaland. But I had to check that this was actually produced by Timbaland, as it seemed a bit flat in comparison with later works, especially with Missy. The Rain isn't bad, but this album did seem to go on far too long and doesn't have the invention and energy of any of the later albums. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

Sharp beats, even sharper delivery. Not bad for a debut, but also not really my thing. Musical Youth have got a lot to answer for.

Really like Timbaland's production on this, it's very smooth, crisp, and punchy. Missy's style on this was wayyyy more subdued than I had expected, only being familiar with her big hits prior to this listen. A lot of the album kinda floated along in the background, but it sounded great.

I don’t know it’s okay the music isn’t as bad as the other missy elliot album in my opinion but it’s just too long for me and it gets boring quick. 3/5

I thought that I would like this more. I remember The Rain being one of the first songs from the genre to really catch my attention. Perhaps it's because I'm not really a hip-hop head I don't understand it's influence or something. I'm just being honest that a lot of it bored me. I'll give it a 3 but a think 2.5 would be more fitting for my enjoyment.

Goes hard in the early tracks before tapering off in the second half, though there are hits and skips in both parts. Timbaland’s beats are pretty great, though it is funny to skim the 1997 takes calling them “futuristic” since I think they’re more just weird and memorable. All in all it’s good, though I don’t think it’s her best based on what else I’ve heard. Best song: Sock It 2 Me

I put this one off for a while. Well produced, and actually enjoyed it more than I expected. Missy Elliot is undeniably musically talented.

It was okay I guess, nothing incredible, got a bit dull in the middle, but picked up again near the end. Didn't hate it, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this again.

Waaaay back in 97, this was an album I loved to bump in my car. Move forward 25 years it takes me back for sure, however, it isn't the same album I remembered. Enjoyed, just not one of the best. 3/5

Fantastic beats, the lyrics sometimes falter a little, but the whole picture is very good.

High-quality hiphop album. Beats are very nice, just like the Justin Timberlake album a couple of days ago, but the overall song material of Supa Dupa Fly is much stronger. Always find it hard to say if this album is better than any of other Missy Elliott albums and why this particular one is included in the list, but presumably the fact that this was the first album may have something to do with that. score: 8/10

Great beats, creative lyrics, good mix of clean singing and rapping. One of the better R&B/rap albums we've had so far.

The rhythms, the raps, they all fit nicely. The second half is somewhat less covincing than the first, although we find excellent tracks there as well, like Why you hurt me. In summary: very satisfactory album.

This album did nothing for me and I wanted to turn it off many times. Uninspired 90s era R&B that's just flat out boring at best. The only semi-interesting things were the Busta bookends, but they weren't even songs. Hard pass, will never put on again.

I forgot how much Missy sang on this and how mindbending Timbaland’s techniques were back in the day. It’s not her high water mark, but it’s damned good.

Since he doesn't have an album of his own, I'll mention here that Busta Rhymes has a really interesting flow that is super charming. As for the rest of the album, it's pretty alright. I like Missy Elliott's rapping, and some of the backbeats are great, but the bragging gets annoying, especially the praise of Timbaland that I assume he wrote himself. None of the features feel that present to me either, other than the before mentioned Busta Rhymes. An alright album that just feels very much like an album that you'd imagine if I just said "rap album".

I think that my analysis was very simplistic and I appreciate more of what people like Missy were doing, which barriers they were breaking down. I still don't like most of the music but some of it is passable. I'll be generous and give a 3.

More singing than rapping and this is a good thing to showcase the album as modern R&B closer to Aaliyah than Jay-z. I like it. Laid back, smooth, good singing.

Probably the greatest female MC (with apologies to many old skool and a fair few modern artists - shout out to salt n pepa, Queen Pen, Ms Dynamite, Rico Nasty and little simz). Production is flawless, samples expertly chosen, and yet the whole package falls just short of her later works of genius. Very close to another 5 🌟 album, but (in my opinion) drags a bit towards the end, so just falls short.

Missy Elliott would get better later when she's chatting filth and not calling out Timbaland every 3 minutes

Nothing to write home about

This is one of those times where the original sounds a little dated because everything after it copied it. Missy is uniquely fun. Not her best, but very good.

I probably didn't listen to it as much as I should have to review it, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. The much lauded production is more irritating than anything, in one instance using a phone ringing to induce rage in me. The lyrics are fine, but nothing as entertaining as something like Wu Tang, and the beats and sounds pale compared to someone like Erykah Badu, or even TLC in terms of fun. 28/06/23

Missy is one of the GOATs in hip hop, and a trailblazer for females in hip hop. I've never actually heard any of the songs on this album surprisingly, but if they are anything like her other hits they should be good. Turns out the sample on Sock it 2 Me is used in a bunch of different songs I've heard, specifically a Watsky song I used to listen to; this song is better. The title song is actually one of the weaker tracks for me. I enjoyed a lot of the other tracks more. The second half of the record is weaker than the first half, but is still pretty good. This is a low 4/5

This feels odd to say but this album feels like the lounge music of hip hop. It's laid back and relaxed.

I dunno. Just not doing it for me. It’s ahead of the time for ‘97 for sure, but it’s non of the elements of hip hop I enjoy. Despite her assertions - she’s just not very good at wrapping, I don’t like the jiggy RnB vibes and I find the production sterile and boring. Unfortunately, this might have helped set the mould for more bland uninspired hip hop to come.

I'm not going to pretend like the lyricism is top notch on this album, but it doesn't stand out, and it's not supposed to. This is an album to just kick back and relax to. Don't think about it, just let it carry you away. And for doing that, this album is perfect. Production is fantastic and immersive. Overall, is it a good album? Definitely. Is it a great album? Perhaps not, but I wouldn't dispute It's placement on this list.

Good rap album

An interesting mix of sounds here, and great production (Timbaland). Missy Elliott has a good singing voice and (at times) fun and engaging lyrics. Other times, not so much, and it feels dated. But you can see why it's on the list. Not something I'm likely to come back to, but an enjoyable listen.

A really promising debut that is a lot more chill than the commanding presence Missy has on later albums. Not quite as immediate as something like Miss E, but there are some really strong cuts on here beside the better known singles (the run from Friendly Skies to Izzy Izzy Ahh is maybe even stronger than that opening run, though The Rain is still probably my favourite song on the whole thing). Unfortunately it does tail off a bit towards the end, and I’m Talkin’ is ridiculously cheesy, and the choice to have two spoken outros is baffling
