Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Another hour long 90's album. I liked Sock It 2 Me and The Rain. But this wildly overstays it's welcome, and is not interesting enough to warrant the length. I also enjoy when 90's albums are described as pioneering or futuristic in terms of production, when actually nothing in the modern day sounds like them because we all collectively agreed 90's albums sounded like straight ass. Timbaland's 00's output is infinitely more fun, and sounds less like it was recorded in an indoor swimming pool. 2 Stars.

Please save me from this turgid mediocrity.

I didn't dislike it, and I like rap. Timbaland's work especially is incredible!

I looked through every period of art on Wikipedia and for some reason they missed the Timbaland era from 96 onwards. Good value for money sitting at 60 mins with 17 tracks, great if I got it from HMV, but I have limited time and Spotify now. I didn’t dislike this album, not as familiar with this album, The nostalgic sound got me, but it’s not got anything that would make me put it on my list of albums.

Not my sort of think, but for what it is it's ok. We've had a lot worse of this sort on here, but still only worth a 2.

She gets a bit too potty mouthed at times. All the little spoken segue bits are annoying and on brand for the genre. So many collaborations that I don’t know which bit she does. And I have no clue what she’s on about for much of it and I daren’t look up the lyrics. But apart from that there was some really good soulful and harmonious sounding bits.

I didn't like this album at all. I'm sure it has its audience, but I'm definitely not in it!

Not all that bad, but won't put it on again anytime soon.

Appreciated but background music for me

Ok, I guess? It didn't bother me in the background, which is not nothing considering I don't like this type of music. 5/10

Just not my thing

this shit is ass. uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh uh-huh yeah uh-huh what? yeah yeah uh-huh friendly skies

I actually like some of Missy Elliott’s work and I think some of her stuff is really great groundbreaking hip hop. But not this record.

I only knew and liked one song The Rain. It was long and not my favorite. It was fine.

Usually when I don't like an album, it's pretty clear why, and if it isn't clear, then I usually try to find a reason. However, I don't like this and I don't even care enough to figure it out.

Favorite: The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) What the heck was Izzy Izzy Ahh This album wasn't very good, it was definitely too long, I can see how something great could arise out of this groundwork it's just not there yet. This album needed to be workshopped a little more and needed less features which I felt often didn't add anything.

I tried listening to this 3 or 4 times, and it just falls flat every time. I know she has better albums than this...

You know when you can tell an album is going to be pretty terrible based on its title and track listing alone? Yeah. Having 10 of the 17 songs featuring other musicians, especially for a debut record, gives this intense feeling of unprofessionalism that you see in a lot of hip-hop records. Plus the interlude tracks that add little other than a sweet chord progression on the synths. Bite Our Style and Missy's Finale could, and should, be cut entirely without anybody missing much. From tracks 11 through 17, only one (Gettaway) had anything musically interesting or memorable: specifically, the chorus ("Said I'm writin' rhymes, writin' rhymes every day") and the backing beatboxing. There are some other runs of decent tracks earlier, too, including The Rain / Beep Me 911 / They Don't Wanna Fuck wit Me. Sonically, it was better than I expected – but the clunky track naming and horrific lyricism put me off somewhat. In the song I'm Talkin': "Like a dick / I make myself sick / I'm so motherfuckin bad to the bone / Like my titties are full blown / My style of rappin, my style / I'm such, such a good rapper / I'm such, such a good rapper". In Him 'Em wit da Hee: "It's the Q to the B to the double E spittin' lovely / And it don't stop, rocks shine through my tank top / Where your bank stop, I despot all the one drops / Think not, excuse me but uh I like to flow / Cause this joint knocks harder than indicot". On the topic of lyrics, I wish she'd stop mentioning Timbaland in a feeble attempt to make this a concept album (or maybe break the fourth wall?). It gets old really quickly, and by Izzy Izzy Ahh, where Missy Elliott's moaning and meowing between bouts of "Timbaland my guy", I'm about ready to tap out. Only to realise I'm barely halfway through the album. 2/5 Key tracks: The Rain, Beep Me 911, Best Friends

Haha, listening to the clean version of this album is hilarious from the very start. She sure does mention Timbaland a lot. Lyrics are straight up goofy. Hip hop isn't really my jam. Interesting beats texturally, but nothing else going on musically. A 2.

Noticeably her first album. So slow, so tame, it felt like Missy Elliott was scared of rapping nearly the whole time. I know there wasn’t a market for women rappers at the time, but all you’re left with is a hollow kinda-R&B album with some weak bars and snooze worthy tempo. For an album with 17 tracks, you’d really expect a bit more variety… It’s no shock to me that her big hits came later, after embracing higher bpm beats and actually rapping.

Really expected to like this more but i found it tedious and uninspired.

More R&B than hip hop.

3.5/10 - I’m not the biggest fan of this genre

the production was nice but i thought the rapping was kinda lame

nnnnnterresting

Solid production. But Missy isn’t for me.

A finely produced album

It's just not my kinda thing.

Uh. Dunno, I was never a fine. Kind of boring and monotonous. I don’t know enough about hip hop to say anything about notability, but I’m thinking two stars.

Missy rules but gummon... This one doesn't even have any of the hits.

I loved listening to and watching Missy Elliot on MTV at the end of the 90s. I thought her music and clips were really cool. I didn't get any closer to her. So now an album from her. My premonition that this wouldn't be a hip hop album that I would like was confirmed. I find the cover version of The Rain annoying. Sock It 2 Me was quite interesting in parts, both in terms of rhythm and vocals. Beep Me 911 was ok, but nothing more. In my opinion, that's almost a good yield for a hip hop album. 2/5

Doesen't hurt the ears, but also doesen't enthuse them

Forgettable album. I didn’t have get your freak on on it . Delete

Yeah it's okay, not my jam but has a bit going on. Mid to late 2s.

No zemlech okay ond entspannte Hip Hop. Aber halt ergendwoe ned so miis.

Overlong and not a strand of hip-hop that resonates much with me, unfortunately. Very dated.

I'm more impressed with where Missy went than where she got started. She's like a guest on here own album here. Mostly nice jams for slow-humpin' ya girl, but it's a little boring.

Started off fairly strong. Production is solid but should be expected with Timbaland. It fell off a steep cliff though despite Timbaland’s best efforts.

Missy has never been for me.

I'd heard a lot of this when it came out. Pretty cool but not something I'd listen to often.

I enjoyed some of it a bit I think.

Kinda cool at times, otherwise I didn’t really care about listening too much — sex tracks are bad

Missy Elliot would thankfully go on to create much better music than what is present on this album. This album is fine I guess but it pales in comparison to Missy's later work.

I honestly expected more. A bit of a slow paced album. I expected it to be more fun and upbeat I guess but that's on me. I respect Missy Elliot and I like a lot of her later work but this album makes it seem like she needed a little time to become that talented. Listenable, of course

Wasn't really my thing but had some decent beats here and there

This is probably good to those who can appreciate it. I am not that person.

Rap/R&B, a bit more melodic than some

Kind of a low energy album, not at all what I came to associate with Missy. Highlights: the rain

Fly? Should've walked

Not my sound. I like the outro though - how it says "this LP"

I think Under Construction justifies its place on this album more than this one. Its fine, but doesn't really stand out compared to her other work.

A cultural breakthrough for sure, but why not Under Construction? It's SO much better!

Don’t care for the rapping whatsoever. Production’s great.

It was okay. In no rush to listen again.

I have a huge respect for missy elliott, but I couldn't sing one song of hers and this Album reminds me why. Every song sounds fire, but the second it finishes I can't remember a single thing about it. If anyone asks me I will say I've never heard supa dupa fly

Too long. Quality not maintained

Not my jam

Having heard some of Missy Elliott's other work, I don't feel like her debut album was her best work. It's fine, but not really my thing.

That was not a very good album it felt long, boring and samey.

Some of my favourite songs from Missy are on here. We definitely have Timbaland to thank for his services to humanity. Some songs are quite missable though. Sock it to me, best friends, the rain and friendly skies would give this a 4/5 alone but with the other songs on the album dragging it a bit, I have to give it a 2

point1.

It was okay but I'd like to hear the artist by themselves more than features with popular artists.

Definitely not my type of thing, and I'm unsure how should I go about rating it. But personally don't want to listen to it, and the fact that a heavy majority of songs here feature another artist, it's kinda weird for a debut.

Not bad, but lacking a the start rating.

Totally understand that Missy Elliott is revered, and in some cases under appreciated. At least in theory. As the person who doesn’t really connect with hip hop this sounds like more of the same. 2/5

Honestly, name checking Timbaland 9000 times gets old. The best verse on this album might be Lil' Kims and by a pretty big margin at that. I don't actually find this to be that great. For whatever reason it just feels boring.

Yeah....I don't think so. A couple of good songs and A LOT of filler. Another hour long album of zzzzzzzzzzz.

hears before

So very 90s. The album starts out a lot with a lot of energy and then peters out halfway through or so. On Gettaway did they really reference Hale Bopp comet and say its "comatose"?

Maybe not a great representation of Missy Elliott. Sounds very much like generic 90s R&B.

I expected to hate it but it was actually kind-of listenable

Eine Stunde mäßiger Rap ohne Glanz oder Gloria. Eher Missy Piggy als Eliot.

Don’t mind the beats but I wasn’t feeling it and it began to wear me down after a while.

I listened to this at work and all I can say about the hour spent is “at least I got paid”

Supa Dupa Boring

I don't care for Missy Elliott

This album was pretty forgettable for me.

Missy is not one of my favorite artists, and I don't like this kind of Rap. But the production by Timbaland shows. So musically this is quite good, as is the production. But the rest is meh.

Ich finde das Album teilweise etwas einschläfernd.

Missy Smelliott

I wished I liked it more than I did. The songs were ok but nothing truthfully stood out to me. Also, I feel like there were far too many featured artists; I think almost every song had a feature. 4/10.

Obviously a key album in the realms of hip-hop what with Missy Elliott breaking down the doors for female rappers and the introduction of Timbaland as a hot shit producer for the 90s-2000s pop/R&B/hip-hop. It's rather bland from 2025 to be honest BUT it is important. Pop and hip-hop had the fingerprints of this all over it for a while. Best Tracks: The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly); Izzy Izzy Ahh; I'm Talkin'

Missy Elliot or Ken E. Chutney? 1.7

It was ok, some sections had moments of greatness but not enough to salvage a good rating

Fine. Not my preferred genre

The parental advisory on this album certainly is well-deserved. This may be a very good rap/hip hop album, except rap is not my style. It’s pretty easy to listen to. I would give it a 5 out of 10, but for the constraints of the rating system.

This is one of the albums I was dreading; I never liked Missy Elliott and she was on the radio all the time in my peak radio-listening era. Highlights: a sung "toot toot" always makes me smile. Taj from Survivor is in the video for 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)'. Lowlights: Typical hip-hop slurs. And in general the lyrics annoy me -- IDK why exactly -- they're like, a bit cutesy/cheeky but not enough to commit. The noise throughout of the entirety of the background of 'Beep Me 911' sounds like my iPhone alarm, which is very stressful.

Not unpleasant, but certainly not enjoyable, and I can't say I remember a single song eight hours later.

90s hip hop, ahead of her time

It's.... alright.

It stinks!

I remember Missy Elliot was pretty influential in the genre for promoting female artists, so I expected much more from this album. It was mediocre at best, and totally forgettable. No songs stuck out to me as great, and the album being on this list is questionable. Too long/too many tracks. 1.5/5

I’m sure it changed the game, but it’s not for me.

I found this v boring compared to our other missy album. Nothing stuck out from this

R&B, Rap, 1997 -> 2

Another rap album that doesn't do anything terrible but doesn't do anything special either. Fairly forgettable, demonstrates the limitations of the rap format. It all ends up being very similar. An hour is too much.

I’ve never really been a fan of this stuff, either Missy /or/ Timbaland. It’s prob not surprising I don’t love ME but I’ve had a harder time with my feelings about Timbaland as I’ve really /wanted/ to like some of the stuff he’s been involved in, notably some Justin Timberlake’s stuff. At this point it seems like JT won’t make music without Timbaland and I think that’s a shame… Besides that though I find his ‘producing’ to be really bland. It /sounds/ good, as in he knows how to use his gear to produce a high-fidelity output… I just hate that his voice is in the background of every track, and all the ‘radio effect’ (which I guess is just like a “late 90’s” artifact) really makes this sound dated. I appreciate ME’s crazy style, but this album is doing nothing for me

Felt like a bunch of half baked songs

Surprisingly tolerable with some cool soul samples, but I'll never be down with rappers rapping about how good they are at rapping. Just... rap and let it speak for itself.

I was really taken aback by the quality of the samples and the production itself in the first half - it’s brilliant. The same goes for having Busta Rhymes introduce you on your debut album. But of course Supa Dupa Fly has to go on for just over an hour because of megalomania, I can only assume. It’s way too long… Exhausting, actually. Cut 20 minutes and this is quite a good hip hop album. Like this it’s way too much.

I guess it’s pretty good. I am not the biggest hip hop fan so it has to be really good to catch my attention. There are definitely some catchy moments on here. And her rapping is crazy good, but I quickly get bored. The Rain is really good though

She'll go on to make alot of things I like including the other album on the list. But this just doesn't excite me, not in the slightest.

The main issue I have with this list is too many artists have multiple albums on the list that don’t deserve them. If we weeded this out there could be a much more diverse list. This is a prime example, don’t get me wrong Missy Elliot deserves to be on the list, but this album isn’t in the same league as under construction, so isn’t required. Don’t get me wrong in its own right it’s a good album, but we don’t need two Missy Elliot albums. So because I’m comparing this to under construction (which I rated 4) it only gets a 2. If under construction wasn’t on the list, this would probably get a 3.

Pretty dull. All the tracks sound similar, none stand out. A lot of the lyrics are very braggy, but then it doesn't live up to the big game it talks. Timbaland does his thing of occasionally mumbling or grunting in the background, which I've always found weird personally

Just not very interesting to me

I thought I would like this more than I did, but to be honest, I found Timbaland's production a little boring.

This was duller than I thought it would be.

i like the track that goes mrroww mrowwrr beep-beep and then she utters the language of the ancient gods a little

Not really my style of hip-hop, but not terrible Standouts Hit Em wit da Hee 2/5

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR (vegan) Artwork: 🪰✨😎 Mix: 😲🙂👌 Musik: 🦸🏽‍♀️⌛🤷 Wertung: 🪰🪰/5

not for me

Not really my thing

Not really impressed

Wasn't familiar with any of these tracks before, I only know her bigger hits from later in her career. Was surprised how.. sedate this is, it's pretty downbeat and lacks the bangers I was waiting for. The sung/rapped style is listenable enough but I didn't find this anything special. Way too long as well, it's not engaging enough to keep my attention for 1hr+

I liked Timbaland's production but didn't particularly love the rest of the album, especially given that the lyrics feel really monothematic. 2.5 to light 3/5

Couple enjoyable songs here and there. Otherwise weak sauce.

This was presented to me milky and with 6 sugars. It was not my cup of tea.

Nice to hear some melodies on a rap (?) album but definitely not my thing

This is a good album when Missy is rapping but there is way too much generic 90s R&B. 2.4

I guess that this was once highly influential but it was never my music. And most probably it never will be. So I can’t really jusge this.

Found myself randomly jamming a couple times, but not enough to check any songs to specifically call out. Other than that, it was pretty slow and boring. Kinda feels like the whole thing is on some Xanax. Definitely felt like 90s rap. Barely a two here.

Man I thought I was gonna like this a lot more after Busta on the first song. All kinda blended together. Just not for me tbh.

Not really my thang. 6,5/10 Highlights Pass da Blunt Friendly Skies Izzy Izzy Ah

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. There's the making of something super interesting here, but it's not fully baked. Missy is unfortunately the least interesting rapper on this whole project. I dig the production and want to support the early women of hip hop, but it's just not there yet.

doesnt excite me

The sound is definitely fly. The Rain is my favorite on the album. I appreciate where this album takes R&B and the debut aspect of it. It is not fully something I’d listen to and enjoy all the way through. 2.5

Boring, really not good. 1.5

Supposedly this album changed rap. I can’t say it was for the better.

Hit and Missy

Not all bad but some songs are kinda stupid. She sounds too high to make any real sense sometimes. Complete trash intro too.

album normalissimo rap americano che non mi piace

Under Construction, which I also didn’t love, had more genuine bangers. This one I suppose has precedence going for it, in terms of it being an early example of both mainstream female rapping and Timbaland’s style of production, which seems omnipresent these days. I can take or leave it tbh - there are some nice beats, but plenty of others are pretty average. Also, self-aggrandising in hip-hop is nothing new, but I had to laugh at how route one the line ‘I’m su-su-such a good rapper’ is…

Already listened

This was fine for a genre I'm not really into.

Was ok. But wouldn’t listen to again

STANDOUTS: The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) Pass da Blunt OVERALL: 2.5/5; great to hear a woman on this list—the album was okay/fine. Not a lot stood out.

Supa Dupa Nopa

Has its moments, an hour is long in my book these days. I actually didn’t realize she around in the 90’s and only heard her in the 2000’s. I would have liked this more back then, now I’m not so sure. Maybe the content hasn’t aged well.

Album 433 of 1001 Missy Elliott - Supa Dupa Fly Rating : 2.75 / 5 It's been made clear that this is not a preferred genre, for me. That being said, I enjoyed this one more than many others. I lost count of how many times I heard "Timberland". At least she isn't just talking about herself and how great she is, all the way through.

Obviously we know that after this album, Missy would go on to be a well established and respected artist, however in a vacuum, this album sucks. How are you going to be the third voice heard on your own album? Weird choice to me. In "I'm Talkin" the lines, "I'm such a good rapper" are hilariously bad like wtf. Busta and Lil Kim sprinkled in this album really show her lack of skill at this stage in her career as their parts heavily outshine her. Why include this album? There better be others of hers on this list....

Crap! I don't particularly like rap and I thought this was a poor example The whole albem sounded dull and lacklustre and a bit flat

Sample messigt meget sjov. Jeg er ikke så meget til albummet. Mest af alt fordi jeg nok er mandet, og forbinder hele den tid med de hårde drenge, og fordi Temberland produktionen bare lyder som den gør... .

All fillers, no killers. Selv hittet “The Rain” virker kedeligt i dag. Jeg var faktisk overbevist om at det på albummet måtte være anderledes end MTV video-versionen. Men nej

Pretty weak entry by Missy Elliot standards. Very run of the mill. You know she has talent but...

Was Timbaland involved in this album? I don’t think Missy mentioned him enough… I didn’t really get this album. The vibes were cool, but as a debut I think it’s kinda weak. There are so many features that it was hard to tell if this was her album or Timbaland’s. It didn’t feel like a statement of arrival. Also continuing the trend of debut albums with this project. I’m going out on a limb and assuming that this is Missy Elliott’s only entry here. If so, this cannot be her best. Because this was just ok. Some of it was that self-aggrandizing that is so pervasive in both hip hop and pop nowadays. Some of it was cultural stuff I don’t connect with. Some of it was just stuff I didn’t care about. This lacked something. Some oomph. Some fire. I dunno. I hate it give it two stars but I really just didn’t care about this album. Standout tracks: Sock it 2 Me, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)

Sounds quite laid backed but isn't overly interesting. Also feel like there are too many features like she was relying on other names. I'd put 2.5 if I could, but it has to be 2 since 3 feels too generous.

Below average and pretty cringy to listen album, after all these years. I didn't know any song from this record, so no sentimentality score, plus it just wasn't good. The only thing slightly helping the situation is that the beats throughout the whole thing were really solid. But that will definitely not make too much of a difference.

Not a huge fan of this one. Repetitive, generally uninteresting - it hasn't aged all that well. There were a few sticky rhymes that I liked, but other than that, not my favorite. 2/5.

I really wanted to like this album. There are some great classic songs that get sampled but this comes across as a mediocre and dated album 2.5/3

Did not like 2 stars

This is truly a huge let down for me as I generally think positively about missy Elliot and I have some fond memories of her songs. “The Rain” is one of those songs that I remember. The features on this album nor timbalands beats could save this album for mediocrity.

Ok, some good songs

Another album and artist I classify in the "I don't see what the big deal is?" category. Another female rapper, which is great and Missy is very influential of more females joining the exciting world of rap, but why is it boring, uninteresting and way toooo long? The beats and production are fine, but I was expecting more, since there's been so much rap and hip-hop lately on this list, I'm expecting something that is special and will stand out, but it seems to be more of the same. Ho hum...

Midsy Elliot

This wasn't bad! But some of the lyrics were very cringe to me.

I used to know a guy who could belch this entire album. At least up until "hit 'em with a heeeee".

It's a fine album. Feels more r&b than hip hop, not that is a bad thing. Some bangers for sure, though the album as a hole doesn't give an especially fascinating listening experience. It a vibe, nonetheless. Would listen again while doing something

Jim u gotta show Dom the pic of Busta Rhymes at our gym in Hoboken. Not the best missy not the worst

I’m not mad this is on the list, but it’s not for me. but i totally recognize it’s relevance and understand why they chose to put it here.

Another 90s R&B / rap album I don't like, with dull backing tracks and a ridiculous number of guest artists.

Not my thing

didnt finish. i feel like she must have a better album than this but i downloaded 5 and 9

Listened Before? N This album is like a who's who of 90s rappers. The featured artists are mostly better known than Missy herself. I thought it was okay overall, it had its moments. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Sock It 2 Me

As bored as I’ve been listening to any album on this list so far.

I know a little bit of Missy's work thanks to my age-range and my wife (who is a big fan). This was a pretty decent album, but it was much slower paced than I was expecting. The beats and rhythms were pretty solid, but I wasn't as much impressed by the words except for a few songs. Hip hop isn't my jam anyway - so it was going to take a lot for me to really like this. But it was okay. Favorite tracks: Sock It 2 Me, Beep Me 911, Pass da Blunt, Don't Be Commin' (In My Face), I'm Talkin'.

Missy again. I think better than her last one, this was a bit more soulful. But still not my bag baby.

I'm an old dude. This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Some very chill songs.

In a fake patois Missy Elliott says I got the rhymes to make you jump, jump, jump. And when she does rap this is true. Missy has bars. Unfortunately the majority of this album is r&b slow jams. Based on my limited knowledge of missy elliott and the album cover I was expecting a hip hop album. I was disappointed. The beats are dope though.

After a while the songs began to blur into each other, and the raps got less interesting. I really liked the R&B background music, even though it sounds manufactured.

not for me

Cool to see Missy Elliot's debut get support from lots of major artists. Overall, the album was decent, not for me though.

The album itself wasn’t bad, but the timing just wasn’t right for me to fully appreciate it. Skipping its day left it weighing on my mind like unfinished homework

I am like the absolute opposite target audience for this album. The production is good but... just not my cup of tea i guess.

Decent 2/5

Okay, not a huge RnB fan BUT I do like Missy Elliott. Album too long for me. I am defo under an hour fan.

Complicado de escuchar si no es tu estilo..

50% embarassingly bad, 50% hilariously bad.

Quite basic hip hop album

The best parts of this album are someone else's work; the production isn't hers, the cameos from Busta, Lil Kim and Aaliyah outshine her, and it's not really that listenable overall.

Production is good, but the album overall is just a bit dull. Nothing that is in any way memorable, and it really drags. 2/5.

Not my style. Timbalands beats were excellent but the rest was kind of a slog of unverified bravado.

Le lobby du R&B

decent r&b but not great

Found it pretty boring. Was alright as background music Rating: 2.4

2. I don't like hiphop, had some nice tracks though

Meh, not my bag.

If you're going to make an LP that's well over an hour long, it has got to have the energy and instrumental verve to justify that amount of listening time. This album has neither, Missy delivering some half-hearted bars on top of limpid beats that do little to capture one's attention. There were a few tracks where I was mildly interested in what was going on, but that was the extent of my enjoyment on this one.

It's just not that special. It had two hits. And they're fairly average hits. I suspect some of the hype for the record is that it is a little different. I appreciate that Missy isn't into the East/West thing or gangsta rap and the like. But that, in and of itself, does not make this amazing music. I understand that the production was also innovative, but it's not enough to take a song or album from good to great, and it certainly doesn't take a 3 star album to 4 or 5. It was a little different for its time, so props for that, but being different doesn't make it great. The hits are fairly average, and the rest of the album is actually kind of boring.

Quite funky and it still sounds fresh after nearly 30 years, but to me it's too long, and musically is repetitive and not very interesting. 2.5/5.

Long and boring and bad 1.5

Nei takk

Better than so much of the similarly styled stuff on this list but the records are toooooo long.

Nothing interesting or original about this

I don't really hear anything super ground breaking. It just sounds like a run of the mill 90's hip-hop/R&B album. Nothing really jumped out as really good, but also nothing terrible either.

I love Missy, and Timbaland. But I had to check that this was actually produced by Timbaland, as it seemed a bit flat in comparison with later works, especially with Missy. The Rain isn't bad, but this album did seem to go on far too long and doesn't have the invention and energy of any of the later albums. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

Sharp beats, even sharper delivery. Not bad for a debut, but also not really my thing. Musical Youth have got a lot to answer for.

Not my favorite genre, but there was nothing on here that I flat out hated.

Yeah I never really got into her, then or now, though I can appreciate the music and production a little bit more now.

I was ready to turn this off about half way through. That’s about when I got bored. A couple good tracks but not enough to keep me interested.

Not a Missy Elliott fan

This is so unbearably boring. Lifeless rapping on literally the same repeated percussion heavy beat.

I probably didn't listen to it as much as I should have to review it, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. The much lauded production is more irritating than anything, in one instance using a phone ringing to induce rage in me. The lyrics are fine, but nothing as entertaining as something like Wu Tang, and the beats and sounds pale compared to someone like Erykah Badu, or even TLC in terms of fun. 28/06/23

Rollo.

I dunno. Just not doing it for me. It’s ahead of the time for ‘97 for sure, but it’s non of the elements of hip hop I enjoy. Despite her assertions - she’s just not very good at wrapping, I don’t like the jiggy RnB vibes and I find the production sterile and boring. Unfortunately, this might have helped set the mould for more bland uninspired hip hop to come.

Tre stjerner - maks

Rollo.

Mais quel est le putain d'intérêt ?

As soon as I start paying attention to the music, Supa Dupa Fly falls from "okay" into "I don't like". I could skip Missy Elliott every time.

Really not my thing, but much more listenable than some of the others offered up.

Little bit of yeah but more yeah nah.

god, help

Virkistävää kuulla tämän aikakauden hiphopia jossa ei oo pelkkää ukkojen uhoa. Ei kuitenkaan musiikilliselta anniltaan mua varten. 2/5

Mit my music. But it was nice to have it running in the background

The feature artists list is incredible, but I feel like the music was lacking a bit for this genre

An album by Missy, with the opening by Busta Rhymes. Thought, huh? Then closed with Busta again and thought OK, unique and kinda dug it. While most rap is not my thing, I always find myself grooving along, in my sit to the music, not so much the lyrics. I really enjoyed a lot of the beats and grooves, but the songs themselves, I enjoyed her guest singers parts more than hers. Songs I enjoyed were Sock it to me, The Rain, Best Friends and Friendly Skies. Again, mainly because of the guest singers. Love Ginuwine's song Pony and seems like he stole his parts from this song to create that song. That's OK, Pony still a great tune. One of those albums I'll say OK. Happy to listen. Not quite my thing, but I didn't want to turn off either. Right down the middle again. You're not going to get a 3 from me unless I get a song I want to download or want to visit some of your other material. 2.5 but will score a 2 2

2 I haven’t heard much of Missy’s stuff, but… I was expecting more? Hell, maybe I have heard some of her stuff before and didn’t realize it, because this didn’t sound like anything I hadn’t heard before. It also just didn’t feel like it’s aged particularly well musically - whereas contemporary releases from hip hop artists like Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Lauryn Hill, and Outkast still feel like they hold up today for the most part, the production here makes it feel very much like a product of the late 90s. I know this is produced by Timbaland who is supposedly a legend, but I don’t feel like I’m hearing GOAT here. If anything, the highlight for me here was Busta Rhymes. Don’t have much to say beyond that - It’s not bad, but I wasn’t much of a fan.

I didn't like this album as much as the other Missy record on here. The songs themselves didn't pop the way her later work did. This isn't bad by any stretch though.

This album is Supa Dupa Long! Vibe of the album was generally cool, but there were very few stand-out tracks. Sorry Missy :( Fav: Pass Da Blunt, Best Friends Least fav: Busta’s intro, Izzy Izzy Ahh

Not my choice of music. I did give it a chance, but it really didn’t do much for me. 2.5/5 (above average)

Na razie najgorsze rapsy, a kilka ostatnio było.

Interesting vocal soundscaping going on, but musically this does nothing for me.

I can see why people like it but not really for me

Just not my type of music.

Not the best

2.5 aslinda

I don't care for this one

I think it was too long for my liking because there wasn’t any song that stuck with me. It was okay but it was just boring.

eh. it's ok. I don't care much for the uber-laid-back style of rap - everything hanging on the back of the beat - so it's never gonna be a favourite; pretty much every song does have a nice soulful feel but they all blend together. Missy has a nice voice though. Preference thing - it's good but the laconic style ends up repetitive and a bit boring. Talented but not my thing. 5/10 2 stars.

Being a fan of nineties hip hop in general (from A Tribe Called Queat to Mos Def, with everything Wu-Tang in between), I was expecting good things from this record. Sadly, it turned out most of the music on those tracks bored me to tears. I won't judge what Missy Elliot is doing on it--she's obviously a talented vocalist and lyricist. But a lot of the production work here sounds half-finished. Whoever put this one on the Rolling Stone top 100 albums of all time must be deluded out of their mind. Maybe if the music album had been grittier somehow, the whole thing could have been interesting. But instead, you have a crisp, clean envelope added to it that makes it worse, flattening everything out. Quite a huge letdown, because I like female rappers in general--but those in the business today just sound better to me, from Nicki Minaj to Cardi B, Little Simz, or even Megan Thee Stallion... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 780, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one)

Alright, not my style

Gonna track by track this bad girl. 1. Busta's Intro - One of the most underrated rappers out there. The Coming deserves a spot on this list. The verse he delivers here unfortunately isn't his best. Still, he sets the tone nicely by rhyming Missy with 'pissy', 'sissy' and 'kissy²'. 2. Hit Em With Da Hee - Lil' Kim contributes maybe the best verse on the album on which she rhymes Missy with 'pissy', after which Missy Elliott comes in with a softly sung bridge, and after 2+ minutes she finally delivers her first short verse. 3. Sock It 2 Me - Beats remain solid. Chorus is the catchiest on the album, Da Brat fails to come up with a solid Missy rhyme. 4. The Rain - Trippy, futuristic vibes. Too bad the lyrics are kinda lame. Still a classic, nice use of the Ann Peebles sample too. 5. Beep Me 911 - A nothingburger of a song. 6. The Don't Wanna Fuck Wit Me - An off character song compared to what's come so far, not really vibing with this one. Timbaland rhymes Mis' with diss, while Missy chocked an opportunity to come up with a rhyme while referring to herself in 3rd person. 7. Pass Da Blunt - Weak ass Musical Youth remake and weak ass verses. Well all the verses have been weak so far, although Missy drops some surprisingly agile holorhymes with kissin' and piss (me off). 8. Byte our Style - Interlude. Missy and Timbaland's style so superb. Have you heard? 9. Friendly Skies - A super laid back, stoned out slow jam. All singing on this one. One of the better cuts on the album. 10. Best Friends - Kinda dull despite Aaliyah contributing vocals. I'd say Aaliyah is more deserving of an album on this list than a lot of the mediocre shit included. This is another no rapping slow jam. 11. Don't Be Comin' In My Face - Double entendre? Cringey song, skip this. 12. Izzy Izzy Ahh - Another stoned out weak ass bragging track. Filler at best. Missy is woefully bad at boastful rapping. 13. Why You Hurt Me - Loosie Bootie is the protagonist of a story warning young women about the danger of promiscuity. TLC did it better with "Waterfalls". 14. I'm Talkin' - "I'm such a good rapper". LOL. Embarrassing. 15. Gettaway - Haven't had a good 'Missy' rhyme in a second. Space Nine saves the day with 'pissy'. Then Missy drops a 'sissy', but forgets the 3rd person reference. Another missed opportunity. 16. Busta's Outro - Busta Rhymes thanks us for taking the time to listen to this particular LP. 17. Missy's Finale - Short shout out from Missy. Final Missy rhyme count (including variants): pissy - 4 kissy - 3 sissy - 1 diss - 1 Busta Rhymes wins with 4 total instances of 'Missy' rhymes. As for the album, a few dope songs, lots of filler, chill vibes, not a must hear, but far from the worst thing on this list.

Supa Dupa Fly comes fast out of the traps, but it doesn't take long before this old nag has run out of puff and is ready for the glue factory. That Busta Rhymes is an early highlight should be a warning, as his name is not on the top of the album. Individual tracks, plucked here and there, might prove fun. I'm a big advocate of albums but this one strengthens the case for shuffle play. So whilst 'Rain' is great, by the time I'm about 'Don't Be Comin' (In My Face)' I'm crying out for variety. And then we do get something different, I guess - 'Izzy Izzy Ahh', one of the worst things I've heard in the last fortnight. And I've been compelled to review Kid Rock in that time. An hour of this...blimey.

The beats are good, Missy's style is too laid back to be engaging for me. Never heard this whole album despite being big into hip hop at the time and found myself trying to convince myself I liked this, when just not interested. 1.7

paved the way for female rappers. I didn't really enjoy the album, but definitely influential

Another 1001 bang average recommendation. 🤦‍♂️

Can see the appeal and Timbaland’s production is stellar (simultaneously dated and ahead of its time), but the length of the album and a number of its tracks made this a bit of a chore.

Un peu ennuyant quand même Prefs: The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), Pass Da Blunt, Izzy Izzy Ahh Moins pref: Best Friends

Some decent hip-hop, but man when it gets repetitive it gets REPETITIVE. At times nice to listen to, at times grating, it just felt all over the place quality-wise. And when you hit a song that's bad it really drags on too long and hits you over the head with how bad it is. Not an album I'd go back to again.

Not convinced

I wasnt a big fan of this. the beats were good but nothing really grabbed me. I dont have much experience with rap so maybe I just need more exposure to the genre, but the album just kind of dragged and the hour runtime didn't help.

Nothing here for me. Nothing bad, just not for me.

Understanding it’s from 1997, it still sounds unfinished and flat in many spots. I expected more.

I'm not into hip hop so was considering skipping it. I listened to a little bit but it was a bit of a drag. Not for me!

Just. Olikohan ekoi nais MC:tä kun tällaisella levyllä päässyt listoille. Ei lähtenyt lentoon, ei sitten ollenkaan...

Hyviä biittejä. That’s about it.

I like the beats on the album, less crazy about the vocals. For whatever reason I never developed an appreciation for that 90s R&B and rap sound.

I wasn't feeling it as much as the first Missy Elliott album I had not too long ago. Just chill background music, lacking the energy and catchiness of "Under Construction".

The production is great even if it gets a little familiar at times. This definitely has that signature Timbaland feel - weird mouth noises, cool funky shit, an ambivalent mix of hip hop and R&B, all in a super snappy mix. Surprising to me is how Missy is a little, idk, disappointing. I’m having a tough time finding intrigue, lyrically. It’s hard to critique because I’m sure this was pretty forward-thinking at the time, but this feels pretty tame and kinda falls flat now. Like, this is definitely misdemeanor-level shit, when I expected some felonies. She’s def got a cool style, she just doesn’t whomp me like I thought she would, especially given all the time she has. Fortunately, the features help out in this department. I’m definitely curious to hear more, but idk if I’d necessarily recommend this one. 2/5

Not really my cup of tea. I liked the odd tune here or there but otherwise it was a bit of a trek...

supa dupa meh.

It was okay but not really my thing. Nice change of pace though. No recognized songs

Not my cup of tea

A bit boring

Not my style but I can see why people like it.

RnB, Hip-hop en Rap zijn niet mijn favoriete muziekstijlen. Dit album heeft wel wat leuke melodie-lijnen, maar in het algemeen kan het "gesproken woord" mij niet bekoren. **

4/10. Some fun samples, but in general felt like it lacked energy, and parts got a bit annoying.

No bangers for me

I just want it to be over. I never loved this era in pop hip hop.

This album is very disappointing. I do not understand what is so worthy of hearing. There really aren’t any memorable hooks. Missy’s vocals are way too laid back to be interesting. It almost sounds at times as if she’s disinterested. There’s just not a lot to work with here.

this wasnt as supa dupa fly, what a scam!

Disappointingly dull

Just not very interesting to me. Kinda boring. Lyrically doesn't seem like she has much to say that's interesting. Musically it feels more R&B and electronic influenced than most rap I've heard. I think I prefer more aggressive/transgressive hip-hop but I'm not much of a hip-hop fan so that's also part of it. Also, this album is too long. Clearly from the CD era.

Eeeeeeuuuuuuugggggghhhh

Not for me.

In 2020, the album was ranked 93 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Not a fan.

had hoped for a bit more

Not my bag

Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the collection and collaboration.

solid album but not many standouts, easy listening though

Cool to see some R&B thrown in the mix as a bit of a change. 'Sock It 2 Me' was the stand out track for me on this one, there were a few good slow jams. I did find a few tracks a bit repetitive. I was reading up a bit more about this album - sounds like it was quite influential on the huge success of Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna etc in the 2000s which I thought was interesting. Would we be free to experience the auditory excellence of WAP nearly a quarter of a century later, if this album hadn't existed? Lots to think about. Would probably go for a 2.5 if I could

Good album for what it is. Not a genre I really like.

Some solid songs but a lot of filler

V well produced, and great rapping. But I didn’t enjoy it. Probably hurt by Slim Shady LP the day before

Klasse, wie fresh alles tönt. Super Auswahl an Samples, gekonntes Casting an Co-Artists, warm groovende Bässe und anders als bei den Männern, sind die backing vocalists kein Schmuck sondern vollständiger Bestandteil. But: I really don’t care Sauber aneinander vorbeige-timba-lebte 2.4

Rhythm was great
