Un po' troppo elettrica per me

It’s fine. It sounds like those guys who hang out at faires and play lutes trying to sell their “Sounds of the Wind” album. This is great if you like feeling like you’re laying in a valley listening to birds and the grass is starting to itch and you know you’re supposed to keep listening and relaxing and enjoying it but at the same time you’re really wondering how long you have to listen and people won’t judge you.

An interesting listen but admittedly not really my thing.

excellent Weather Channel music

Nice background music, but too slow to be fun.

Ploing. Tuut. Piep. Plönk. Glubb. Zum Klischee verkommener Bahnbrecher. Traurig irgendwie. Fügt dem Bild indischer Folklore aber auch nicht die leiseste klangliche Nuance hinzu, die man nicht schon von allen folgenden Adaptationen kennen würde.

I'm not familiar with Indian music at all and this would be my first exposure to a full length album. I've heard some of it in my life mostly in movies or background noise at restaurants. This really didn't do much for me and by the end the repetition started to become irritating. Apparently the version I listened to on Spotify isn't the original, I still won't be seeking it out anytime soon.

This is terrible. I listened to the Spotify version for 10 minutes and got totally anxious. So I dropped it and gave it a 1 star ranking. Then I listened to the YouTube version, which seems to be the original. But again, I just can't stand that one instrument that sounds like a whining guitar. So the 1 isn't going to change.

It's not that bad, but at the same time I'm fairly certain I'm never ever gonna put this on again Some of it really sounds like Age of Empires II music The problem with this is that I don't hate it but I can't give it much more than 1 star as there's really nothing in it for me 1.6

I HAD to listen to this before I die?! Maybe it’s ok if it was background music while I was eating in an Indian restaurant, but I can’t imagine ever wanting to put this on to listen. I’m sure the musicians are/were top notch, but I still don’t want to hear it. This must’ve been the 1001st album on the list.

I like Indian music and I’ve heard this before. It’s fine, but the westernizing touches aren’t necessary. I haven’t listened to this here because the link to Spotify is to some knock off version. The original doesn’t see to be available.

Godda be in the mood for it

Gets on the list for being the first raga album to hit the states and grab the attention of some famous rock artists. If not for that, sounded like all other classical raga. Hard to decipher individual songs. I imagine Indian people listen to Rock and Roll and think it all sounds the same. I prefer the Ravi raga with faster pace and energy. Call of the Valley was very slow. Peaceful but boring. Glad I got to listen and further my musical culture but most likely not visiting the valley again. 1.18 stars.

I can understand why this gained some popularity in the music world when Indian influence was getting some exposure in the late 60's. I assume the nod from The Beatles and the like is the real reason this gained traction and ended up on this list. Otherwise I'm not sure how this breaks out compared to any other Indian music I've heard. It's an OK example of the style and associated instruments but not something I would go out of my way for otherwise. While the individual pieces are fine the full album feels a little repetitive as I wasn't able to differentiate much between the tracks. Better than some of the other world music entries on this list, worse than others. Either way glad for the single listen for exposure but not something I'll return to. 1.31 stars

I didn't enjoy this. I feel a bit uncomfortable saying that about a non-western artist, but that's silly really, as I don't enjoy specific genres (death metal for example) and wouldn't worry about stating my thoughts on that, so why would it be different for Hindustani classical music? I don't like the droning sound that punctuated a lot of this, and something about that, plus the syncopated rhythms that were happening, made me feel really anxious at points. Something that this album and certain trance/dance albums have weirdly in common. I would like a 1.5 star, as it's not close to the album I've enjoyed least during this project, but if I were to give it 2, that would be way overselling my enjoyment. I fully accept this was influential, but I did not like it. So a 1 it is. 1/5

This was a tough listen. it is safe to say, i will never, ever, listen to this one again. i felt like i was in some bad Indian restaurant.

Found out the version I listened to on Spotify was not the original, and I have no desire to go to Youtube to listen to the original. I guess that sums up my feelings about this album.

Well this was a bit of a mission to even get started. I spent the first half hour this morning listening to completely the wrong album via Apple Music before realising it was a remake by his son. That version wasn’t great. I eventually found the original Call of the Valley by Shivkumar Sharma on YouTube, which was a much better experience. The actual album is musically haunting and genuinely beautiful. It’s very chilled, very relaxed, and works perfectly as background music. You can just let it wash over you. That said, it does lack variety. It all blends into one long, continuous piece, and while it’s lovely, it doesn’t really give you any standout moments to hold onto. I can appreciate how good it is, but it’s not something I’d go back to. It feels more like an experience than an album you revisit for specific tracks. Favourite tracks: Ahir Bhairav_Nat Bhairav is probably the closest to a standout, although it could have been a bit shorter. Least favourite tracks: It all blends into one, so nothing really stands out either way. Album artwork: Nice, simple cover that fits the tone of the music.

Tää oli vähän liian erikoismenoa itselleni. Ensin kuuntelin töissä, niin pariltakin työkaverilta tuli ihmettelyä että olenko alkanut käyttämään huumeita. Great as background music for a meditation session, not for listening

Another album where I have limited familiarity with the genre, enjoyed a few songs, but a whole album isn't a preferred listen for me.

I’m sure the musicians involved are at the top of their craft playing the most beautiful Indian music ever created, but this was most certainly not for me. I tried listening intently several times to try and get lost in the vibes and ended up feeling like I was going crazy. Having said that, the santoor seems like it would be a fun instrument to fart around on/master.

I swear I’ve heard this before in my local patchouli-scented emporium. Or maybe it was a yoga studio? I can’t listen to this music. New age harps and sitars make me unspeakably angry.

I don't know if many people will agree with me on this (this album has a review average of less than a 3 so they might) but i am gonna be clear, Call of the Valley sucks. This was just one of those albums where my opinion of it deteriorated over time. At first, i thought this album sounded interesting but then it just kept going and going without much variation or good songs and i my opinion of this album started to get more and more sour. I think if just one of the songs released as a single, then i my original opinion would have stayed but as it stands, This is an album that i can understand it's place on the list but that still doesn't make it a good album in the slightest. Such a peaceful album with its strings and flutes. It made me wonder what the spiritual practice behind the album was. Overall, it's not a useful album for me personally, but pleasant enough way to while away the time!

I emerged from my yurt, which was located on a mountain outcrop. As I looked over the mist-covered mountain valley, my hot, naked body steamed in the cool morning air. I was just coming down from the vision quest peyote I had taken the night before. I felt a bit sheepish. Amazed, I saw myself. I said to my own self “self” I said, “you are ewe”. This album played from inside the yurt and the world made sense.

Did not Finish - I tried listening while reading and it was fine at first, but the 100 String Santoor just over-powered my concentration and demanded I listen everytime it kicked in. Might be good to meditate to but I've never tried to even without this so who knows?

LOL, I think all the spotify plays on this album came from the 1001 album generator! I understand this was really important to a lot of people but I couldn't make it very far.

This was grating and unenjoyable. If you're into boring instrumentals, this is for you.

Call of the Valley was made to create an album of classical indian music shaped in a form to appeal to a western audience. It was a commercial, not an artistic success. While far better classical indian music exists, it was chosen because of the easier listening experience, making it an awful choice.

This sounds like something that some hippie type convinces themselves that they like because it's from a non-western country. It's painfully boring. There are a few nice moments I guess, but they are few are far between and cannot make up for the endurance marathon that this album is.

To my Western mind, this was authentic Indian music. Apparently, to Indians, it's half way to Western music, Western scales, etc. I suppose it's fair to say this is the musical equivalent of the "Chinese" fortune cookie. Culturally, this is the Indian musical equivalent of "Live, Love, Laugh" spraypainted on some fake barn wood and hung in your bathroom. Skill-wise it sounds lovely. I don't care about any of the baggage, if I liked it, I'd like it, and that's fine. I just wasn't really into it. Maybe too psychedelic, maybe too foreign, maybe too slow, I dunno. I just wouldn't ever choose to play it again. I'm going to rate it 1-star, despite trying to save that for truly unlistenable garbage, which I now have no way to separate it from. But seeing other things I've rated 2-stars that I enjoyed far more, it seems the only fair rating to give it. I think if it's your kind of thing, you'd like this a lot. But if it's not, it's hard to get off the runway.

Very surprised at all the love this got. There were a couple of moments when I thought I might like it, but mostly it was just one of those cases of watering down a world or ethnic music to appeal to Western sensibilities, which I find not only disgusting but abhorrent.
