Reviews (page 2 of 13)

Great album - I have (begrudgingly) come to accept over the last couple years that, between IM and Metallica, that I might actually be a big fan of heavy metal. It's not the kind of thing I would throw on, but every (good) metal album so far in the list has left me with a better opinion on it and The Number of the Beast is no different. Good tunes. The speaking bits, usually a little cheesy, actually work really well here. I find Eddie to be an insufferably ugly mascot for Iron Maiden, but at least he's marginally better than Vic Rattlehead. I want to beat that numbskull with his own metal chains. Fav tracks: The Prisoner, 22 Acacia Avenue, The Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name

8/10 Treading the line between heavy, theatrical, technical and catchy, this album is a really satisfying slice of heavy metal gold. Some of the individual songs have as many quality riffs as some other bands manage across an entire album, and it’s all delivered in a brilliantly tight rhythmical package. The introduction of Bruce Dickinson to the band allowed the compositions to lean more heavily into the theatrical and you can really hear them embracing that, particularly on the standout numbers. The first side of the record is a really solid mix of songs, if perhaps unspectacular. They delve into a variety of changes and sequences, rarely sticking around on a theme for too long, but always staying true to the concept of each song. There are some great moments of guitar work, as would be expected, but the rhythm section also pokes its head over the parapet now and again to go above and beyond their standard consistent pulse and emphasise the rest of the composition in really satisfying ways. And then we reach the second side and all hell breaks loose. Number Of The Beast and Run To The Hills is an absolutely magnificent one-two punch to launch the second half. They’re two hook-laden, melodramatic metal masterpieces. Every member brings their A game and these two songs in particular thunder along, delivering energy, inventiveness and musical expression in a brilliantly catchy and memorable package. The quality dips a little after that, although the standard is still high, but those two tracks alone are enough to recommend this album for a repeat listen. It’s perhaps not the most consistently brilliant album over its full duration, and there are moments when things lull, but it’s still an overwhelmingly engaging and exciting record. I think it has possibly lost a tiny bit of its impact because of how much heavy music has evolved over the subsequent 40 plus years, but that has certainly not dampened the quality of the composition and performances, and there are so many little moments that you can pick out on repeat listens that make it worthy of many revisits. Invaders - This is so stuffed with quality riffs. It’s super pacy and has quality drive to it. The chorus is a tasty proggy diversion and is probably the least hooky part of the song, which is a nice inversion of expectations. In fact, I like the fact that it's not completely what you would expect. There’s loads going on in this track and, while it’s very singularly paced, there’s so much range and quality to what they’re delivering that it doesn't really matter. Children Of The Damned - This plays more to expectation in terms of composition and structure. It’s melodramatic in a really endearing way and the pretty verses and slow headbang of a chorus are really great transitions. And then they pick up the pace with some quality dual-guitar work. Some quality drum fills in there too. Another solid track. The Prisoner - There are some solid, chunky riffs and rhythms to kick this off, but it does take a little too long to kick in to the track proper, but when it gets there, it’s more high quality theatrical 80s metal. The verses do drag on just a little bit too, but the chorus is great. I feel like the vocal could have been a bit higher in the mix during the chorus, but it's a minor gripe. There’s more high quality widdly guitar solos here again. A very good song that’s possibly been dragged out into something a little longer than necessary. 22, Acacia Avenue - So much pace and some more chunky and engaging riffs. They play quite a lot with dynamic here which adds depth to the song, and when it kicks, it packs an excellent punch. I think the transitions into differently emphasised sections is really good and keeps things on their toes. I can feel a lot of influence on Metallica in the way that it evolves through a variety of sections with different intensities, but it always feels coherent to the vibe of the core song. The Number Of The Beast - What a way to kick off the second side. This intro is just iconic. The riff, the vocals, the way it all builds together, it’s just superb theatrical metal. The bass line, something that often gets overshadowed in metal, is really great here. There are some brilliant guitar solos too, and Bruce Dickinson just keeps on bringing the drama and energy. It’s just great. Run To The Hills - And the one-two punch. If the intro to the previous track was iconic, what is this? It’s magnificent. And then it drops into that wonderful galloping rhythm that sustains through the verse and chorus. It’s so rhythmically satisfying through the verses and then when the chorus hits, it raises its game even further. The lead vocal melody is brilliant in every way, and the way the rest of the band play around it with little fills between the vocal lines is perfect. The backing vocals add that extra bit of drama to it too. This is just an absolutely top tier song in pretty much every way. Gangland - I think this suffers a little from following the previous two tracks. It’s still solid, but it doesn’t have the same level of hook as they have. It’s pretty balls to the wall though, and the energy is great. I feel like it would work better if there was a bit more dynamic or tonal variety between the verse and chorus as it’s a bit to dynamically flat across the full length, but again, the musicianship is excellent and the drive it provides is still enjoyable. Hallowed Be Thy Name - And we’re back to something with more development and dynamic range. There are some great rhythmic choices here and it just seems like they’re having great fun writing their way through various changes. It never quite lands on the same level of hook as the standouts on the albums, but there are still some really engaging and memorable riffs and passages. And damn, they’re tight. It’s all so fluid, but packs such a punch when they want it to too. Fantastic widdly guitar solos too, and it just sounds like they’re having so much fun.

This is a classic metal album. Powerful vocals, rippin' guitar solos, and quick heavy riffs. This album has a couple of lesser known songs but a decent amount of hits as well. Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills are songs that I've heard many times and never get old. The gem of this album is Hallowed be thy Name, the pacing is phenomenal and the melodies/ harmonies/ solos throughout are amazing.

Somehow, I had never given this album a full listen until yesterday. It’s already taken my top spot in the hair metal genre - they execute all the tropes well, and it’s a fun listen front to back. I’ll never understand why they didn’t use the title track as the opener… spoken word intro, quiet to loud, two guitar solos… what more do you need?!

really solid metal album

Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this after only hearing two Iron Maiden songs previously. Starting the Guardians of the Galaxy game this week helped too

More enjoyable then I expected. Run through the hills and number. The beast were particularly catchy

This was my first album on the list. I'm not a heavy metal person, so this was a stretch for me. I liked it much more than I thought I would, especially Run to the Hills. I recognize that it's a great album, it's just not for me... yet. Maybe by the time I get further into the list. Who knows?

Overwrought prog done right, not my jam but lovable.

"Invaders" promises much that the rest of the album fails to deliver, getting increasingly silly and leaden. "22 Acacia Avenue" is terrible, so dumb. Dickinson's vocals are an improvement over the earlier bloke, but it's still adolescent pablum. Shame, I was briefly excited.

So far, this is the album that most reminds me of Spinal Tap. Almost (ALMOST) every strong starts out strong. The musicianship is there. But as soon as the vocals kick in... it sounds like a parody. How did this get an average rating over 3.5?? Maybe because people like me will have a soft spot for that drummer and guitarist (who are doing some good work). Also, the cover art. I don't think it ages well. Just plain black - none more black - might have served them better. The exception to my various complaints might be the closing track "Hallowed Be Thy Name." Another reason to round up instead of down, I suppose, so I'll give this 2.51 and it will get logged as 3...

I did not realise how conceptual Iron Maiden were as a band. I couldn’t imagine turning up to band practice with some very literary lyrics about defending the Earth from alien invaders. I don’t know where that impulse comes from. But I’m glad someone’s done it. When you think of how many bands out there have utterly meaningless or derivative lyrics. To have a band write an ode to 1960s TV show The Prisoner, I’m all here for that. Their music is a lot of nerdy, camp fun - and instrumentally very impressive. They’re adding something to the culture that you’re simply not going to get anywhere else.

There was always a group of kids who came into my classes wearing this T-shirt, so I had a certain impression of the band but had never heard them. The album is surprisingly musical and has more nuance than heavy metal generally. I rather enjoyed it, although it's a bit "growly" in places, but there is some good writing, too.

Im not a big metal guy and this album showed why I just never get into metal music

I don't have anything against satanism but at a certain point it's like...ok

There was a boombox in the weights room of my school's gym. At the end of PE classes, we could play "our own music" while we worked out. But a faction of bullying dude-bros monopolized the boombox, and the only tape I ever remember getting played was Number of the Beast. I hated PE, I especially hated doing weights, I hated those dude-bros, and I learned to hate Iron Maiden. Listening to this forty years later, I can appreciate the technical achievement and high drama of it all, and it really does set the highwater mark for 80s metal; the galloping riffs, the lightning-fast 'typing' solos, the histrionic vocals. But it really comes down to whether you like that sort of shit or not. Update: I just bought a copy of this album for my 22-year-old nephew for Christmas. I think he'll dig it, even if I don't. And that cover is pretty cool.

I love Maiden…..but in very small doses. i.e. two songs max at a time. “Run to…. “ and “Number” are classic galloping, pantomime horror Maiden. The other tracks? No thanks.

Maiden are great. In small doses. The main tracks Number of the Beast and Run to the hills are great galloping, pantomime horror lyric fuelled Maiden metal. 🤘🏻 The rest is the usual galloping, pantomime horror lyric fuelled Maiden metal but dull.

I don’t like this. Sounds like a heavy metal musical. This is disgusting. I hate that I like the music. But the singing and the lyrics are terrible. I mean, he’s got a good voice obviously, but it’s sounds like it’s more fit for a broadway musical. Maybe that’s his secret dream. He’s pressured into this heavy demon stuff, when really all he wants is to play in hamilton. To me, it’s not very interesting. Boring in fact. There’s nothing to talk about. Just the same shite again and again. Like I get it, devils and despair and whatever. I mean, if you’re into that stuff I’m sure this album is great. But if you’re not, this album is the equivalent of listening to a really religious and christian album. But just the opposite. And the guitar is good but the singing. The lyrics. All the songs could be demos of the same song. Okay, that’s exaggerating it of course, but I’m trying to make a point here. I’m not saying I hate it. Some songs are catchy. And maybe I’m just not in the right state of mind to be listening to this. But thats the thing, I feel like such a strong and angry and aggressive album should be able to force you into the right state of mind. Anyway, it’s okay. I must say the music, despite all the songs sounding similar, is good. Those riffs do get me a little riled up. But the singing almost makes me cringe. But I can get behind what they’re about. I just think it’s silly. This last song? Hello? By far the best track on the album. Finally I received what they were trying to deliver this whole time. I don’t know what it is about this song that got me going. I feel like if I listened to this a couple more times, It’d grow on me. The thing about this album is, I don’t think it’s crap. It’s just… not my style I guess. I can’t find it in me to resonate with this album. And yeah, I thought some of the lyrics were corny, and I found myself wishing there were more parts where the singer would shut up. But honestly, I’m okay with just letting this album be. I don’t have to like or dislike it. I don’t have to get it. I’m glad I listened to it. I definitely appreciate this albums intention and impact. But since I have to rate it based on how much I enjoyed it, I’ll have to give it two stars.

Way too much Iron Maiden on the list.

Not awful, but I’m glad it ended when it did. Made me think of magic the gathering conventions, and that’s both a good and bad thing.

This album cover makes me lol. I don't know if I've ever heard an Iron Maiden song before this. They sound a lot like a lot of other bands, some of whom are on this list (Rush, maybe?). But are they the leaders or followers? (Probably leaders?) Anyway, it's not doing anything for me, but it's not actively offensive. Like Muse, while there are a lot of guitars, the guitar is so constant that it doesn't upset me. Very even coverage with their noise-making. The lyrics are just silly. I never know how seriously I'm meant to take this kind of stuff. It feels kind of like the music they'd put in the English dub of a sports anime. Actually, after framing it like that, I like it a bit more. But I would simply never sit down and listen to this, so it's a 2.5 rounded down for me. Highlight: 'The Prisoner' (would fit right in to Sonic Adventure as a Sonic or Knuckles track!)

Compared to other heavy metal albums, this was tolerable. Not overly keen on Bruce Dickinson‘s voice but I find that with most albums of this ilk. Run to the Hills was fun and kudos to any band that samples The Prisoner. classic 60s TV. I didn’t have to reach for the headache tablets at the end, so this was a marked improvement in my appreciation for teenage headbanging boy music.

Metal is never going to be my favorite genre, though there are a couple-dozen songs that I enjoy. But on the whole, I find the genre a bit silly, and Bruce's vocals are exhibit A. I just can't with that operatic tone of his. Having said that, I didn't hate this album. The songs are pretty strong (if also perhaps a bit silly) and the playing is aces. But that singing. (Bonus point for that Prisoner clip, though.) Also, as a teen, I loved their album covers and posters. They're still pretty great. And that logo is iconic.

I swear a thousand albums ago I reviewed Iron Maiden, but here we go again. With all this stuff I just can't get past Spinal Tap. Any, and I mean any, credibility this strange genre had was destroyed by Tap. And then Some Kind of Monster just hammered in the nails in the coffin of this strange, strange form of music. So I thought ok smartarse, drop the attitude and have another listen. And listen I did. Now the slow songs in this genre; they slow down, really slow down, the singer stops screaming and works through the lyrics in a hushed tone, the lyrics of course being about some dark, dark theme. So while that's happening you can make yourself a soy decaf machiato, what I like to call a perche disturbarsi, and get ready for....whoa hold onto your seats... the guitars to come er er er ering in and the singer to start screaming! They.All.Do.It. I mean come on. And the big ones, well listening to RUN TO THE HILLS! er er er..for the first time since the early 80's, it seriously sounded like Stonehenge from Spinal Tap, which of course... I just don't get it, the whole thing. Big bottoms, big bottoms, talk about butt cheeks my girls got em. Perche Disturbarsi!

You know that scene in "School of Rock", where Jack Black as Dewey Finn (as Ned Schneebly) is running through the song he wrote for the battle of the bands, to a group of bemused children? We're not supposed to think it's good. It's over-the-top, corny, stadium rock nonsense. The character arc is that Dewey learns about creative compromise, and chooses the better song, written by Zach, one of the students (and sounding like peak AC/DC), instead of choosing his ego. Well, this isn't a review of "School of Rock", but this entire album sounds to me like Dewey Finn's songwriting in that movie. In fact, I'm pretty sure Jack Black was parodying Iron Maiden in that scene. Over-the-top, warbling, screeching, with repetitive riffs and lyrics about Vikings and demons, it's all very predictable nonsense. Feels like the type of music that Dewey Finn would have kept writing if he hadn't committed identity fraud.

Genuinely impressive that someone can produce something of such limited musical and artistic merit. Everything that is bad about the metal genre (which can be great) is here. Repetitive riffs, pretending to worship Satan, and lyrics about the struggle of a little white man. Imagining the lack of personal hygiene in the crowd is enough to steer well clear until the end of days. 1/5

Zero stars for juvenile art, lyrics and performances. If I were a 13 year-old boy, *maybe* I could listen to this drivel. Nah, at 13 I was into the Beatles, MoTown, Bowie.

Great álbum so complete it brings a lot to this genre

Fuck yeah, that ruled. And a reference to the McGoohan Prisoner was a pleasant surprise

"Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short... Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is Six hundred and sixty six." Genuinely this is an untouchable masterpiece. Easily one of the greatest metal albums of all time. WILDLY memorable lyrics about the devil and slavery and human suffering! It’s so fucking good it should be illegal! Have you seen the cover? Easily one of the greatest album covers ever not even limiting it to metal albums. This album is what makes metal so great but also shows what metal is capable of. It’s progressive and on the correct side of history. It’s everything I want from a metal album and then some. It’s truly Iron Maiden’s Magnum Opus.

This album kicks ass in so many ways. The guitar, bass, and drums on this album are fucking impeccable, and Bruce Dickinson was hungry with something to prove since this was his first album as a member of Iron Maiden replacing their original lead singer Paul Di’Anno. Definitely a highlight of the metal genre (like many other Maiden albums). Strong 9/10 for sure

"Finally some good fucking food". Really good album, good length to it, some huge bangers on this one. I can find the lead singer's voice grating over time, but the album was just the right length that they didn't overstay their welcome.

It feels somewhat over the top at some points. But it just is a fun high energy experience. The hits are so good and I was even surprised by the lesser known tracks. Will listen again

Honestly, yes at times it sounds downright ridiculous. But it's such a solid, no-skips collection of riff-tastic heavy metal songwriting it's hard not to cite it as a perfect example of its genre. If you're not fully indoctrinated by the time you reach 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', you certainly should be by the time it's over. That song alone is worth the 5.

One of my favorite albums. Run to the Hills, Hallowed be thy Name are top tier Maiden tracks, and overall not a skip on the album. Fantastic guitar and bass work. Crazy thing is this isn’t even their best album.

This is an EASY 5 stars for me. I LOVE Maiden. Two of my top 3 favorite songs from them are from this album, being Hallowed Be Thy Name and Run to the Hills. Number of the Beast was the song that actually introduced me to Iron Maiden after I played it on Guitar Hero back in the day. My parents raised me on old country, so this was something out there. Very influential Maiden album, and definitely worth the listen!

Everyone watch 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple IMMEDIATELY

Fantastic album from start to finish - this is the Maiden properly finding their own sound and character. Epic.

Pure metal majesty and I'm so sorry for all of us that another whiny Radiohead album has to come right after this.

Somehow, I didn't start listening to Iron Maiden until just within the last ten years. I just wasn't exposed to them back in the day, though I probably wouldn't have gotten into them then anyway. When I finally gave this album a good listen for the first time, I couldn't believe how cheesy it sounded, almost comical. But after a couple listens, it clicked, and I get it and I love it. While there's a sameness to a lot of their stuff for me, this album does stand out and I come back to it not infrequently. So happy that these guys are still at it after all these years.

Tätä on tullut kuunneltua jo kasarilta saakka. Hyvä levy täynnä hyviä biisejä. Klassikko!

#968. Iron Maiden is corny as hell, and Bruce's voice is very voicey, but somehow it works anyway. This album fucks. 5/5: It's honestly great, even though it shouldn't be

MUITO FODA

Man, music is the best.

lightning on wax. it's electrifying, hyper, maniacal, but above all, beautiful. this album was my introduction to iron maiden 2 years ago, and it still reigns as my favorite of their work. bruce dickson's voice sparkles in true heavy metal elegance, adding an extra extra layer of thrill to every single track. as for the riffs, they of are nothing short of highly addictive and audacious. although it's titled "the number of the beast", this album sounds, dare i say, angelic in many ways. all throughout i felt a deep, intense feeling of empowerment. that i can face this world in all its wretchedness and come out on top every time, while also helping others to the same. sidenote, s/o regular show for priming my taste for 80s rock. its too many tracks on here that would perfectly fit into its ost. im almost certain this album specifically had a lot of influence. 6.6/6 favs: the prisoner, title track, run to the hills

Each song tells a story, album has some of Maidens biggest songs. Classic Iron Maiden,Hollowed Be Thy Name is the highlight of the album. One of the best albums from one of my favorite bands of all time so I may be biased!

I'm sorry Iron Maiden. I wasn't familiar with your game. I get why Ralph Fines rocked out so hard to this album Favorite Songs: Children of the Damned, The Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name

9 - forgot how much maiden rocks

Got to Iron Maiden through the game Carmageddon when I was a Kid :D I don't often listen die Iron Maiden, but when I do i always have a fun time. Especially this album has some really really good songs

The best

I was a big Maiden fan in my younger days and this was the first album I bought. It was always considered their best work. I'd argue it's not seen that way anymore and Powerslave is probably better. Somewhere in Time too perhaps? I've never been a huge fan of Hallowed be thy name either. This is heresy in Maiden circles. Still a great album and from a time where Maiden could make an album full of memorable songs in 40 mins and not forgettable ones in 90. I'll give it the full 5 stars. Half a mark is for nostalgia.

Easily one of the best heavy metal albums of all time, and a great representation of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal". Really helps that the production here is the best of their earlier albums, with the guitars sounding crystal clear and still leaving room for the bass to cut through when needed. The albums that came before and after this can often sound a little muddled in comparison to what's on this release. The title track and "The Prisoner" are my personal standout picks here, with the only one I would call a dud being "22 Acacia Avenue" due in part to it's kind of frankly shit lyrics. Even so, that song flies by without issue for the most part thanks to the riffs and solos doing some real heavy lifting. Still keeps it from reaching a truly perfect score in the end, though. 9/10.

9/10 As someone who has only dabbled a little in metal music, I think it would be hard to argue against this being one of the best metal albums. 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' is such a satisfying way to end an album that, in my opinion, has no misses.

I meaaaaaaan. Love it. All albums should just have 8 songs on it. Love gangland and invaders too even though our stevie harris hates em. Everything else is just a banger

The fact that this stuff had American conservatives in such a panic when it was released is hilarious - it's goofy in the best way possible. I never quite got into Maiden when I was younger like many people do, but I've come to appreciate this band just by how campy the whole thing is. While the band rock a gimmick like Kiss did, these guys have the songwriting chops to back everything up. They bring the riffs in spades and Dickinson makes for a very theatrical frontman. Side one is excellent, but side two is godly as it features massive hits like the title track and "Run To The Hill" before concluding with fan favourite epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name". I had so much fun with this and it is a stern reminder for me to check out more of their stuff.

The one-two punch of number of the beast into run to the hills is legendary Head banging the whole time

Killers was the first Maiden album I heard when it came out & I loved it. But this this came out it blew me away. That new lead singer came in & changed everything. This album was perfection to me. Little did I know that they're were going to continue to put out incredible music!

Absolutely banging album - a career defining moment and probably Maiden's most iconic material. No shortage of highlights on this one - not least the title track, "Run to the Hills" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Deserves no less than five stars!

Classic

666, the number of the beast. This is another throw yourself into the action album. Iron maiden are gods, Eddie is their minion and they serve metal, for all.

An unmitigated classic, this kicked off an impossibly great run for the band. The songs are epic, catchy, dorky, and gallop along toward eternity. Maybe my 3rd or 4th favorite Maiden album, this five is really for this whole early Dickinson period. Legends! 🤘🏽

Clássico, para mim este é o primeiro disco de Iron Maiden em que eles já tinham encontrado o som que os define. Tem várias canções que não são tipo “hits” da discografia deles mas que são muito boas na mesma

As much as it is cheesey, and I wouldn't want to listen to it everyday. It is still awesome.

5 stars

Now I understand the appeal of this album. I must confess I haven't listened to it before, but it has been such a fabulous experience. The first part of the album is excellent, and the guitars are absolutely brilliant, all over the album, actually. But this album does not lose its interest at any time, it is all the time great, song after song it builds a pretty enjoyable experience... and the last song really closes it in a fantastic way. So, it has been great, from start to end.

Nice album, much better than anticipated, few amazign songs

Amazing album, easily one of the greatest of all time, and top three metal albums of all time

I've been an admirer of Bruce Dickinson & Maiden since seeing them live 9 years ago, but haven't listened to much of their albums. This is pretty bloody great. A rip-roarer. Banger after banger. I was only familiar with Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills & Hallowed Be Thy Name previous to listening to this album. I was blown away by some of the other tracks here, namely Invaders, Children of the Damned (favourite song of the album) and The Prisoner. The fast-paced guitar solos coupled with Bruce's incredible vocals makes for one epic record. One of my favourites so far.

very fun! fav song: Invaders

Very cool guitar riffs, bass and vocals! The only thing I didn't like was the bits of talking like on the title track.

BANGER!!!

considered one of the best metal albums of all-time. Probably my second favorite Maiden album. It has the classics "Number of the Beast" and "Run to the Hills" (about the American Indians) as well as "The Prisoner" and "Hallowed be thy Name" (usually their show closer). "Run to the Hills" is probably their most well-known song with their signature bass gallop. It is usually in their encore set. pay attention to the bass lines in songs. Their founder/bass player, Steve Harris is considered the best metal bassist in the world.

Hallowed be thy name

I already listened to this one not long ago. But I can still say without a doubt that it is one of the best and most iconic british heavy metal albums of all time. It pretty much put Iron Maiden on the map, and the title alone caused plenty of controversy, which most likely contributed to its popularity. It is a pretty solid and easy listening album from start to finish, and Bruce Dickinson raises the bar in terms of vocals with his air raid siren of a voice, as well as showing off so many recognisable guitar riffs. songs like The prisoner, Run to the Hills and Number of the Beast are absolute bangers but it is not until when Hallowed Be Thy Name closes off this album where they truly showcase their skills in progressive rock storytelling. paving the way for more epic adventuous songs in ture such as Rim of the Ancient Mariner and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

One of the all-time greatest albums for rock and metal fans. On personal repeat for hundreds of times and it doesn't get old. The double-lead guitars are simply honey to the ears!

Maiden, my first love

Mind blowing shit. Adrenaline injected straight into my heart. Perfect 80s metal. Hallowed Be Thy Name was my fav song and my fav first listen of the album. Children Of The Damned and The Number Of The Beast were my other highlights

Iron Maiden has been officially announced as an inductee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Finally.

This is a classic.

Ok, this is a bit ridiculous and time hasnt been kind to it, but it is also 100% irresistable. Peak 80ies heavy metal.

I still remember the first time my dad played me this album. Coming back to it years later, it's still great with plenty of air guitar moments that got me some strange looks in the uni library. Hallowed Be Thy Name is outstanding.

I have had a passing relationship with Iron Maiden over the years. My uncle gave me Deep Purple in Rock, from which I built a record collection that included the classical, blues, jazz and soul influences in Purple’s music, but was very much geared to the heavier side of ‘70s rock. So, when a friend turned up with Metal for Muthas, the NWOBHM sampler which included two Iron Maiden tracks, as well as a pre-Maiden Bruce Bruce (Dickinson) with Samson, I was interested enough to look out for IM’s first album when it was released later that year. And that, I think is the only Maiden album I own. I liked the punky metal with Paul Di’Anno’s vocals. I listened to Number of the Beast when it came out, and I saw, and enjoyed, Maiden at Reading ‘82. I just didn’t love them. I have dipped in and out over the years, and occasionally, I do a deep dive. I have listened to almost everything they have released, have seen them live again recently (it was excellent) and, even if I cannot say they are one of my favourite bands, I do respect them. I joke that Steve Harris is like the old blues singer on In Living Color - I wrote a song about it, like to hear it? Here it goes…- in that he really wears his influences on his sleeve, or in his titles. This album has a song inspired by Children of the Damned called “Children of the Damned”, and one by the ‘60s TV series The Prisoner (“The Prisoner”). Later we get lots of similarly, literal inspirations. But listening today, I hear a tighter, more varied album than I remembered. I can hear Ritchie Blackmore and, especially, UFO/Michael Schenker influences in the guitar playing and, even this early, indications of the proggier sounds that would come in later. Dickinson does have a good voice, obviously influenced by Ian Gillan; he would become more nuanced as he got older - he tends to use Gillan's high register Highway Star voice 90% of the time on this album. But no matter, I really enjoyed this and it is incredibly influential.

I can't be objective about this. It was perfect 20 years ago and it still is.

This album is crazy, the lyrics are like telling a story. In terms of writing, it's like he's telling a story very well. The instrument is also crazy, it's like it's loud but still neat and the vocals are also very steady and match the instrument. I don't know if it's just me or what, but track 2 seems a bit different, honestly it's not perfect but it's almost almost perfect. Out of 10, I actually give it 9.5.

Maiden do so much right for my tastes, which is doubtless influenced by their bass player being very involved in writing their songs It's the first album so far where I've stopped after a song to go and try to learn it — make of that what you will Probably a 4.5 for me, but it's likely to be among the album's I like best on this list so we round up

AMAZING. One of the bands and albums that got me into guitar into the first place. Very foundation album not just for me but metal music as a whole. The last run of 5 songs are really strong with for me The Number of the Beast being my favourite. Every member of the band is just incredible with no weak members. The bass and drums are amazing, the dual lead guitars give Maiden thier distinctive sound, and this is the first album with singer Brice Dickinson who is amazing too. I cannot give this anything but a 5.

Classic metal

One of the best pure heavy metal albums ever released. Blazing speed, face-melting guitars, iconic vocals, and infectious energy. Endless opportunity for headbanging. Some of Iron Maiden's best, and more than a few hidden gems. Near perfection from start to finish

For some reason I had in my head that I didn't like metal that much. However, if AC/DC and evidently Iron Maiden (this album) count as metal, maybe I do. In my head, it was all screaming and noise, but this is really melodic, the singer is actually singing, and the guitar riffs and drums are fantastic. It's just rock music with dark themes, and I like it!

Expectation: -> I've always preferred Metallica, and enjoy Megadeth and others, so I expect this will go well. After listening: -> Sounds as good, no better, than I would expect for an Iron Maiden album in the early 80s. Some of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. They sound a bit like if Van Halen did metal. Impressive. A couple slow bangers at the top of my rank list…and no weak points anywhere on the album. Track ranking: Children Hallowed Prisoner 6 6 6 22 Hills Invaders Gangland

I don't usually love 80s metal, it's fine, but not my favorite. This was really good. I knew number of the beast well. Hallowed Be Thy Name sounds really familiar to me. I wonder if it was on rock band/guitar hero.

This has been one of the most outstanding bands ever. Look behind the images and listen to the music. Love them

The first of the golden age Maiden albums - Invaders is a bit of a slow starter, but it just ramps up from there.

Great guitar tone, simple but catchy riffs. Nice lyrics. Great album.

A top 10 all timer for me. #UPTHEIRONS

Album yang bagus ini dibuat hanya dalam 5 minggu.... dan di tahun 19-freakin-delapan dua.

Masterpiece. One of the best albums of all time. No needs more comments

Songs might get a little samey sounding at times (in my opinion) but there are some absolute classics in here. Can't go wrong with it.

best of 80s metal imo. 5.

All killer no filler. 8 songs spanning 40 min that just never let up. Solid lyrics, impressive technical display across the board. Everyone is in their element here and it shows. This is a band in their prime, and as for me, if I'm in the mood for metal, this is a 5/5. I can't say this is something that'll appeal to everyone though, but for even casual fans of the genre, this is a great time. Standouts are Invaders, the title track, and Run to the Hills.

Incroyable découverte

You can't go wrong with Iron Maiden. Still hard to believe this was controversial back in the 80s but now nobody bats an eye.

Me encanta iron maiden y mi favorita fue Children of the damned ♡

This is a great album. When I was younger, it would have completely stolen my heart. Now that I’m older, I tend to prefer more mellow music, but I won’t lie — it’s still a masterpiece, even though I don’t really listen to heavy metal anymore.

LOVE IRON MAIDEN !! AND EDDIE (the mascot) !! RAHHH

Hot damn! I am not a metal fan, but Iron Maiden rocks! I don't think anyone can deny the talent and quality in this album. I'm giving this a 5 because of its consistency throughout. "Run to the Hills" is the standout song for me, but I was rocking through the entire album on my way to work.

Clasic

Es un gran álbum con riff poderosos, la voz de Bruce es notoria.. este metal es poderoso. Aunque considero que tienen mejores albumes

Devil horns in the air

Amazing to read about how transgressive and scary people thought that these guys were. Ultimately a rocking good time.

Iron Maiden rules hard, they are simply fantastic at what they do!!!!!

Soooo good. really damn good. wowie

I listened to this album for the first time when I was 10. I did not get it. Listening to it now, I understand early metalheads

Run to the Hills is the jam

10/10. Fav Tracks - All of them I'm just getting spoiled recently because another hardcore classic is now in the books.

very pleasant to listen to. as opposed to an alice in chains album, I didn’t feel like I wanted to take my headphones off because it hurt my ears (not that I don’t love aic, I ABSOLUTELY do. it’s just a more gritty sound). I thought every song had a very nice melody and it had absolutely no skips for me. I loved how beautiful the guitar sounded. it was just a beautiful album in general, which was something I wasn’t expecting from iron maiden. it was the first iron maiden album i had heard, actually, so I was very pleasantly surprised. I also loved the voice in the beginning of track 5; it gave me CHILLS. overall amazing album with no skips.

foundational

Out of all the great Iron Maiden albums this is the best, and that is because it has one of the greatest anti-colonial song that has ever been put out "Run To The Hills". For people who think that metal and hard rock is all about the devil this song shows, in a way, that it is people who are the devil.

Oh, one of my beloved ones! An absolutely fantastic album.

Not my favourite Maiden album, but easily their most important. A massive step-up from the punk oriented first couple of albums, a trio of all time Metal bangers, and with Bruce coming in they would lay the foundation for becoming the biggest Metal band in the world.

Pretty good album from the first band I saw live in concert.

This one deserves five for run to the hills alone.

-Invader feels very much like power metal at the start, though speed metal might be the better comparison. -Prisoner really reminds me of another song and I don't think I'll find it for a long time. Frustrate. -22 Acacia Avenue started off solid then swept me off my feet. Contender for best guitar solo in the album. Will confirm. Over 6 minutes long as well, which I like. -- Yeah, this has my favourite solo in the album. Not by much, of course. -Number of the Beast. Iconic. Masterful. I must inform the law. -Run to the Hills may have the catchiest chorus. I'm partial to soaring vocals like this. - Hallowed Be Thy Name is an indicator, I think. I remember empire of the clouds and this does make me think of that whole album, but particularly that song. Excellente alboom. Magnfico.

High quality art, but a bit too heavy for personal opinion

Too bad they hate Cleveland. They should be in the hall

HALLOWED BE THY NAME

My first metal album, and what a classic! I was quite familiar with many of the songs on this album before today's listen. This is a great album, perfect length and enough variety to keep it interesting. Invaders, The Prisoner, and Children of the Damned are just as good as the more well known tracks.

Brought me down a rabbit hole of music my dad would listen to

I used to have this patch on my east pack bag…… Fucking love this album though. Just does the job all in all. Better then bransyon pickle on a cheese sandwich. Can see why this is on here, I personally think iron maiden as big as they have been or still are in many ways, are also underrated.

Doesn't get better than this as a metal fan, I really forgot how great and influential Iron Maiden were especially to bands such as Metallica and Machine Head etc etc.. Steve Harris' thundering basslines and those guitar riffs! This album is just full of straight bangers, production is awesome and really kicked off the whole clicky bass drum that punches through the mix, fucking awesome stuff!

It rips from beginning to end. I got a little worried when the second track started slow, but they seemed to anticipate this and picked up the tempo midway through. The album doesn’t look back from there. On my first run of albums I got Iron Maiden’s debut, which had a different singer. It was okay, but this is awesome all the way. Maybe if I had listened to more stuff like this growing up I’d have ended up a better guitarist. Also, listening to “Run to the Hills” like IRON MAIDEN WAS WOKE!?!1?1!?

Every track is a timeless banger. Dickinson's vocals are genre-defining, the guitar riffs are technical and dynamic, the drums are iconic and memorable from the first downbeat, and the bass is unrelenting. The themes of the album, while built upon those of former albums, set the stage for a discography of epic heavy metal spanning the works of classic Greek mythology to imperialism's history of bloody conquest. No band is as iconic as Iron Maiden, and this album blazed the path for future albums to follow without a single misstep.

classic incredible no comment flawless

Finally, some good fucking food. Maiden at their absolute best - they're dumb as rocks but it's hard to not enjoy this

Might just be nostalgia, but I really like Iron Maiden. Some of the songs are a bit cheesy, but the riffs are awesome and I don't care

Actually not even top 3 IM album, but they are always the best.

One of the greatest albums of all time.

Really good album. I’ve never listened because I thought it was satanic but figured since I’m doing this challenge Jesus will forgive me. I think they used AI though because obviously no human on earth can play the bass that fast with their fingers.

Epic Maiden!

Of course it's 5 stars. What a fucking kick ass album. So much nostalgia here, but even with that aside, it's just so fucking good!

In reality this should get a higher score but giving it 666 is not allowed. Pure energy perfect for any workout a must listen album.

A truly legendary album with some of the world's greatest hits of all time. I'm listening to it for the second time and appreciated most of the songs, but there are still two that I didn't quite like. Rate 9/10

Legendary album for metalheads. Prior to Maiden, there were other bands classified as early metal, of course. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are prime examples. But Iron Maiden solidified the feel and aura of modern metal bands. But that's all immaterial. Is the album itself good? Shortly, yes. It's a worthy addition to this list. However, it's not perfect. Even though this is quintessential Maiden and features an array of must-listen songs (see: Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run to the Hills, and The Number of the Beast) I find myself realizing that my favorite Maiden songs are all from later albums. Additionally, the band itself has admitted that Total Eclipse should have been on the album instead of Gangland, and Invaders is a pretty weak opening. Nonetheless, an easy 5 stars by a self-confessed metalhead. We're knocking on the 50th anniversary of The Number of the Beast, which is wild to think about. Bonus points were given because American conservatives hate(d) this album.

The kingpin of metal music. I mean, come on, easy rating. 5/5

Invaders - 4/5 Children Of The Damned - 4.5/5 The Prisoner - 4/5 22 Acacia Avenue - 4/5 The Number Of The Beast - 4.5/5 Run to the Hills - 5/5 Gangland - 4.5/5 Total Eclipse - 4/5 Hallowed Be Thy Name - 5/5

Favourite growing up and played huge part in me discovering metal music. Don't really listen to Maiden much anymore but number of the beast still stands for me as on the greatest metal albums ever, 5 stars

This is not the sort of album you listen to at 6 am in the morning, unless your 6 am is a continuation of the night before. One thing I like about this album is that The Voice of Iron Maiden is very easy to hear and understand, you can hear every word unlike a lot of other heavy metal bands.

Fuck Yes!! Loved every second of this, the driving baselines, ear melting solos and the falsetto vocals. You really can see where a lot of modern rock, metal & punk bands got their inspo from.

too many classics here not to 5 it

My previous review: "The best Iron Maiden album there is. It's pivotal to their shining and extensive career. Bruce's voice is so powerful and iconic. The sound is still relevant and never gets old. Run To The Hills, The Number of The Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Children of The Damned... Love them just as much as I did when I was a teen. A 5 star album without any doubt." I will add this though: This is a defining album for Heavy Metal, not just Maiden. It's raw, but that's the edge it has that makes it timeless. A 6 If it could be, but alas...

This album is like that golden time where your friend Jason has his restricted drivers licence and he has borrowed his sister’s car. You and a car load of friends are going charging around town on a Friday night, threatening mischief. You’re too young to get into bars, so there isn’t really much you’re going to do on this joyride, but for a moment the world feels like it is yours. You go home later and have some beers while playing PlayStation.

Run to the 5 star review. Amazing album start to finish. Steve Harris galloping on the bass. Clive Burr throwing in fill after fill on thw drums. Murray and Smith, 2 of the most iconic rock guitarist ever and maybe the greatest ever pairing. And a debating Dickinson absolutely letting rip on the vocals. Starts strong but absolutely peaks in the middle with ye run of 22, number, run amd Gangland. And finishes with an all time great with Hallowed. Out of 5 stars, this album gets a 6(66).

If you can't handle me at my Iron Maiden (Run to the hills) then you don't deserve me at my Kate Bush (Running UP that hill.) I was shocked at how many songs from this album I knew. Loved every second. Forget 5/5. This was a 10/10.

It's hard to understate the influence of this album on metal as a genre. The compositional complexity of the work is something to marvel at, especially when comparing to Iron Maiden's progenitors. They truly feel like the ones that propelled metal into something that could be blasted full volume at arenas everywhere, out of floor to ceiling walls of 4x12 Marshall cabinets. Bruce Dickinson's maiden (pun intended) project with the group elevates them to another level entirety, as the gods of distorted harmonic twin guitar lick runs, galloping riffs and banshee screams that they be remembered as through time immemorial. Derek Riggs is possibly the most iconic metal album sleeve artist ever. Favorite Tracks: "Children of the Damned", the entire span from "22 Acacia Avenue" to "Run to the Hills" Least Favorite Track: NO SKIPS Satanic Panic: 666 HAIL TO THE BEAST out of 10

Invaders basically kicks the door in and starts assaulting you with riffs, which basically don't stop for 40min. It's wonderful. There are some definite highlights for me, like 22 Acacia Avenue and how in tune the lyrics and instrumentals are, feeling like an epic with all sorts of twists and turns en route to the finale. Or the absolutely classic Run to the Hills and its iconic chorus. Or basically any time the extremely talented ensemble of guitarists are given center stage. I absolutely adore this album. I think a lot of "introductory" albums for genres can feel a little stale when you come back after going down the rabbit hole. And then someone gets you into heavy metal with a classic like this and it just stays in your rotation for 20yrs. A truly timeless album that still resonates strongly with metalheads to this day, it is, in a word: sick.

Wait this is bangers

2/2 Classic metal album. Not a single bad track on it

If you haven't seen 28 years later: bone temple, and you are a metal head. You need to drop what you're doing and go see it right now. The scene with the number of the beast track is amazing. I love this band. I saw them live in 2025 and they still rock so fucking hard.

Such a solid metal album. Lyrically interesting, iconic vocals, and really nice production compared to similar albums. The Number of The Beast stands out to me in terms of overall polish. Adding a phaser on the guitar in the verse is a really cool choice for a 1980s metal album. Run to the Hills is also a crazy good jam, and was one of my favorite songs to play on the drums in Rockband.

fuck these dudes rock. consistently so dope across its runtime, mixes up their sound just enough, might be the best workout album that's come up by some margin. Run To The Hills still whips so much ass, but Hallowed Be Thy Name probably hoists the album up a whole number score by itself

I listened to this piece of art like 5 times on speakers, on headphones, in my car, looking for any reasons why it shouldn't 5 star. I've found 1.5 things: 1. The Prisoner is the weakest song on the album, I can't descibe it other than having "Bon Jovi vibes". 0.5. Invaders is only kinda good as a song, but is an amazing opener as far as setting the tone + expectations + energy, and it's kinda silly. OTHERWISE, every other song that plays is juicy as hell, creative, fits together to fill my album style variety quota perfectly while still staying focused. Just extremely strong the whole way through, Hallowed Be Thy Name which is an insane closer as well, absolutely sick album 9.3/10

Interestingly enough, I heard a lot of modern hardcore influence while listening to this record, which just goes to show that I feel like this album is far more influential than people really give it credit for (Even though it gets all the credit really). Excellent through and through, no skips, just meat and potatoes.

Absolute of a kind album. Fav!

Amazing

Second Iron Maiden album in the space of a week 🤘looks like this album was released a week before I was born and has aged just as well as I have. 5/5

mad head bopping material

Fucking incred. What a thrill post wedding pre shit storm snow storm go Pats.

another album that i listened intensely in my teens. i still understand why i liked it then and i still enjoy the songs a lot, but it achieves 5 stars mostly for the sentimental value

Hit after guitar thrashing hit.

ABSOLUTE CINEMA

I haven't heard that album through for ages - because someone made off with my copy... This is music from when I was a teenager and it is very simple, formulaic rock music. It's quite funny that this was the end of western civilisation back then as it's melodic music with lyrics about popular culture. 5/5 and I need to get a new copy of the vinyl.

Vraiment excellent, presque aussi jouissif que Black Sabbath, "Six six six...the number of the Beast !"

A complete album. Great songs that fit together

I can't not give this a 5. My dad used to play this all the time. Still does.

Has more prog influences than I expected for whatever reason. "Invaders" and "Gangland" don't do much for me, but I still like them well enough that they don't drag the album down. I could listen to this album every day. So much good stuff.

Perfect album

Seeing that I actually own this album in Vinyl when it first came out, my rating may be skewed. This was the beginning of the heavy British metal invasion. At the time I thought the album was the best. I still think it holds up to one of the greatest hard rock albums.

When it comes to this style of metal, especially from this era, it’s not at the top of my list, but this album is definitely done right. Every single element that this style of metal aims for, this album hits on point. The music is high-energy and fast-paced, with plenty of catchy riffs and melodic hooks. The bass on this album has always stood out to me for some reason. This is definitely an album I go back to from time to time, and it will always be enjoyable no matter how far into the future we go because it’s timeless.

All-time classic!!

When to listen: Pump up or feel like a boss. Surprisingly loved this as a no skip. Made me think about and appreciate metal vocals and musicality.

An absolute Heavy Metal banger of an album with amazing songs such as Run to the Hills and The Number of the Beast. Bruce Dickinson is amazing on vocals5/5🤘🤘

The vocals, guitar riffs, solos, lyrics, and druummmms! amazing all around!

Great album!

I have heard of iron maiden but haven’t listened to any songs from them. Invaders - strong start, nice classic rock sound, like the vocals for INVAAADEEEERS, for some the voice reminds me of Invader Zim (also invader harhar) Children of the damned - a lot softer and delicate, ok vocals !!!! It has built a lot now which I like #plottwist, YASS SCREAMM 😛 The prisoner - ok scene and acting, love the guitar and the chords in this one, ok double time !!! Don’t know spit in my eye pls 🧍‍♀️, ok guitar solo !!!!! 22 acacia avenue - love the rhythm of the guitar at the start, bow bow bow, just a nice listen overall, surprisingly doesn’t get boring when it’s 6.5 mins The number of the beast - intro dialogue sounds like it could be from Rocky Horror, DANGG THAT YELLLL, this one was sick af Run to the hills - ok cymbals, a little bit groovy lowkey, would be great in a running playlist, also sounds a bit like the Aquabats but love, I rlly like this one 😛😛 Gangland - ok whiplash, sounds like he’s saying gay man #pride, more upbeat, still a good listen Hallowed be thy name - ok love the switch up, wow what a great album OVERALL - I rlly appreciate a shorter album cuz yesterday was ROUGHH, I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it, I do like rock but I don’t normally gravitate towards it often, still rlly enjoyed all the songs and guitar solos 🎸🎸 (also I thought the red guy on the cover was spider man) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5

Legendary

Classic metal album. Amazing musicianship and exciting music. Quite a variety of styles too.

Old school Metal

Is good

My mind was blown the first time I heard this in middle school. To this day It still punches just as hard, and I never seem to tire of it. Up the Irons!!!

Jesus. Christ. This album would be a five if it was just Number of the Beast -Run to the Hills- Gangland, but then there are somehow MORE songs. Absolutely terrific.

4,5 Mític per bon motiu, quin to en Steve Harris. Run to the hills el millor tema amb diferència però molts d'altres: Invaders, Hallowed by thy name...

I’m a new Maiden fan, this was brilliant

Amazing. And what a closing track 🤯

szalone,bardzo klasycznie,już rozumiem hype

Didn’t expected like this, I thought they were more punk. But I liked it very much

Dommage !

Woe to you, oh earth and sea

Burnnnn

THIS is the Iron Maiden I was expecting to get. Liked it more than I ever remembered. Number of the Beast followed by Run to the Hills is insane

Love me some satanic panic circus music

I’ve never listen to Iron Maiden before and now I feel this will be one of my work playlist adding to my system of the down playlist as we speak. I really enjoyed it. I will say, I do picture Jack black as the front man in my head. Lol

One of the must have top 25 metal albums of all time. These people are absolute insane and this album has hit after hit a simple masterpiece of rock.

Increíble de principio a fin, sin duda alguna hay canciones que resaltan más que otras, pero aún así cumple el propósito de ser un álbum clave en la consolidación del metal.

I love Iron Maiden and this is probably their best album. So an easy 5 stars from me. Some of the songs might not have aged as well (22 Acacia Ave) but it's still an almost perfect album by the band.

If you like epic guitar solos and brilliant musical and vocal work, you've come to the right place.

This was really good! I never thought of myself as an Iron Maiden fan

I know some people love the Paul Di'Anno Iron Maiden. For me, Maiden was/is best with Bruce Dickinson at the helm. This album starts one of the best 5-album streaks in metal, if not all of popular music. This is not a perfect album, but it's damn close. If everything else on the album was mediocre, the title track, Run to the Hills, and Hallowed Be Thy Name would still be enough to make this a 4 star album. And yet, the only real let down on this album is Gangland. This is 4.5-4.75 stars. Rounding up to 5.

Perfect

Okay what can I say about this group and this album. Love the group love their music. Just listen for yourselves

The first Metal album I ever heard. And it still stands up!

Hallowed be thy name är odödlig

Pretty sure I haven’t heard this one since middle school when my IM obsessed friend listened to it all the time. Not a record I’m ever gonna reach for but it’s definitely a great record and an absolute classic of metal. Run for the Hills is one of the all time great metal tracks, Bruce Dickinson is maybe the best metal lead vocalist, and the songs and lyrics are all really strong. It’s not my taste anymore but it’s a great record and defined a certain kind of metal, and a certain kind of metal satire as well. Bonus points for Eddie and the various great covers over the years

Overall: 10/10 Iron Maiden is truly one of the greatest band of all time (in my opinion). While their first two albums were great, this is the one where everything came together. The reason for that is the addition of the legendary vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who brought an epic voice to the music and gave Maiden the freedom to experiment and become even more epic than they had been. They even started to get borderline proggy after this album. There isn't a single skip here and I would honestly show this album to anyone who is interested in getting into metal but doesn't want to start with the super heavy stuff. Still, give me Powerslave any day. Fav Song: Run to the Hills

I'm surprised I haven't listened to this before. Great stuff.

Iron fuckin Maiden!

A near perfect album and a high point for an iconic band

Fun riffs, great mascot, lots of running in place musically. Sounds like it was written to scare parents, which honestly worked better than the album itself. That's why I love it.

Yes!!!

Masterpiece

Solid album, closer to a 4.5 for me. Doesn't overstay its welcome.

We come to this place for magic. The air raid siren Bruce Dickinson. The guitar harmonies. Lyrics about battlefields. This is Maiden.

First Maiden album with Bruce on vocals. Harris kills on the bass as usual. Might not be their best work overall but easily their most iconic album. This shit rocks. Hallowed be thy Name is one of my favorite metal tracks. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Interesting themes, lyrics and art… not to mention epic sound

One of the greatest albums of all time.

Definitely a classic metal record. I feel like the kind of metal that everyone can get into but still embodies the epic playing/ dark aesthetics etc. I just listened to the Needle Drop review and he indicated how this was such a pivotal turn for metal as this bands predecessors were very blues influenced where this one kicked up the speed/technical playing at thrashier/hair metal playing.

Album No. 0051 on my list. I've been a big Iron Maiden fan in my teens, so it was nice listening to this album again after a while. "The Number of the Beast" is certainly one of the greatest metal albums of all time, there is absolutely no doubt about that. There are only good songs on it, with "Children of the Damned", "The Number of the Beast", "Run to the Hills", and "Hallowed be thy Name" being the most well-known, and indeed, best ones. Yet, "Invaders" and "22 Acacia Avenue" come close as well. My hidden gem on this is actually "The Prisoner", a cool combination of early heavy metal and classic 80s melodic power rock. Really liked it. This is the first album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals, and while I like Iron Maiden's earlier work as well, there is just no comparison. He really is the greatest metal singer of all time. In addition, there are some incredible guitar licks in this as wel (e.g. in "Children of the Damned"), and you get your classic Steve Harris lyrics. May well be my favorite metal album of all time (maybe tied with Metallica's Master of Puppets - how creative, I know). In any case: all-time favorite! 5/5 stars!

Surprise, surprise - a heavy metal album I actually love

5 estrelas obra prima do Nwotbhm

Classic

By 1982 heavy metal was on its way to becoming what it was meant to be and several key pieces were putting out records that pushed that narrative. Perhaps the most important piece came from a band who were undergoing a transition into becoming who they were meant to be as well. Iron Maiden had been trudging along just fine but their true breakthrough had yet to occur. All that they needed to do was the accrue the number of the beast and unleash their prowess upon soon-to-be converted listeners. The Number of the Beast is forty minutes of some of the greatest heavy metal ever committed to tape, the type of heavy metal that makes one want to run through walls and conquer the most detested of foes. 666 may be the devil's calling card but, for a short period of time, it was a clarion call for all.

50 000 stars. Iron Maiden is rivalled only by AC/DC or maybe early Metallica in terms of consistency, awesomeness and pure realisation of vision. They get the formula early annd stick to it. The fans love it. And this is probably their best album. No words can really express how great this is. Maiden sneak complex music theory into what is meant to be dumb rock and roll. And it works. Sarcastic elbows has pointed out that rock and roll needs to be a bit dumb to work. The thudding pounding rhythms here and lyrics that are both clever and deliberately provocative (‘6 6 6, the number of the beast!’: American evangelicals clutch their pearls and worry who’ll think of the children. ). Yet Maiden is not easy to play. There’s a level of musicianship that is among the very best of Metal. And indeed music. 50 000

**In-Depth Review: *The Number of the Beast* by Iron Maiden (1982)** Iron Maiden’s *The Number of the Beast* is not just a landmark in heavy metal history—it’s a cultural milestone. Released in March 1982, this third studio album marked the debut of Bruce Dickinson as lead vocalist and catapulted the band into global stardom. With its blend of mythic storytelling, galloping riffs, and operatic vocals, the album helped define the sound and aesthetic of modern heavy metal. --- ### 🎼 **Musical Style and Composition** Musically, *The Number of the Beast* is where Iron Maiden truly forged their identity. The raw punk edge of the Paul Di’Anno era gave way to a more polished, epic, and technically proficient sound. Steve Harris’s galloping basslines became central to the band’s signature style, while the twin-guitar attack of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith introduced harmonized leads and melodic solos that would become a metal blueprint. Tracks like *Hallowed Be Thy Name* and *Children of the Damned* showcase the band’s growing ambition, with dynamic structures, tempo shifts, and dramatic crescendos. The opener *Invaders* sets a furious pace, while *The Prisoner* and *22 Acacia Avenue* blend narrative lyrics with intricate instrumentation. Even the weaker tracks like *Gangland* maintain a high energy level, though they don’t quite reach the heights of the album’s standouts. --- ### 🎤 **Vocals and Production** Bruce Dickinson’s arrival was a game-changer. His operatic range and theatrical delivery brought a new level of drama and power to the band. His soaring vocals on *Run to the Hills* and the title track are now iconic, and his performance on *Hallowed Be Thy Name* is widely regarded as one of the greatest in metal history. Producer Martin Birch, who had worked with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, gave the album a crisp, powerful sound. The mix is balanced yet aggressive, with prominent bass and clear separation of guitars and drums. The production helped elevate the band’s music from underground clubs to arena stages. --- ### 🖋️ **Lyrics and Themes** The album’s lyrics explore a wide range of dark and dramatic themes: - **Religion and the Occult**: The title track *The Number of the Beast* sparked controversy for its apocalyptic imagery and biblical references, leading to accusations of Satanism. In reality, the song is more of a horror narrative, inspired by a nightmare Steve Harris had after watching the film *Damien: Omen II*. - **War and Colonialism**: *Run to the Hills* critiques the European colonization of the Americas, told from both the perspective of Native Americans and the invaders. - **Imprisonment and Fate**: *The Prisoner* (inspired by the British TV show) and *Hallowed Be Thy Name* deal with captivity, existential dread, and the inevitability of death. - **Urban Decay and Morality**: *22 Acacia Avenue* continues the story of Charlotte the Harlot from previous albums, exploring themes of exploitation and redemption. These themes, while often dark, are delivered with a sense of grandeur and storytelling that sets Iron Maiden apart from their peers. --- ### 🔥 **Influence and Legacy** Few albums have had as profound an impact on metal as *The Number of the Beast*. It helped solidify the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and influenced countless bands across genres—from thrash legends like Metallica and Slayer to progressive metal acts like Dream Theater and Trivium. The album’s blend of melody, aggression, and narrative depth became a template for modern metal. Its success also proved that heavy metal could be commercially viable without compromising its intensity or complexity. --- ### ✅ **Pros** - **Bruce Dickinson’s vocal debut**: A transformative moment for the band. - **Iconic tracks**: *Hallowed Be Thy Name*, *Run to the Hills*, and the title track are metal classics. - **Strong production**: Martin Birch’s work gives the album a timeless sheen. - **Narrative depth**: Lyrics that go beyond clichés to explore complex themes. - **Musical ambition**: A step forward in complexity and cohesion compared to previous albums. --- ### ❌ **Cons** - **Minor filler**: *Gangland* and *Invaders* are solid but don’t quite match the impact of the other tracks. - **Repetitive structure**: Some songs follow similar pacing and riff patterns, which can make the album feel slightly formulaic in places. - **Over-the-top theatrics**: While many love the drama, some critics find Dickinson’s vocal style and the occult imagery a bit excessive or gimmicky. --- ### 🏁 **Final Verdict** *The Number of the Beast* is a cornerstone of heavy metal. It’s not just an album—it’s a statement of intent, a declaration of what metal could be: intelligent, powerful, and unapologetically bold. While not without its minor flaws, the album’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. It remains essential listening for anyone seeking to understand the soul of metal. In short: If you want to hear where modern metal began, start here.

Great, a classic.

Perfect iron Maiden album

There's so much to rave about this album. Between vivid demonic the lyrical themes, the crisp guitar, and impress drums, The Number of The Beast comes close to an 80s metal masterpiece. I will say I am not the biggest fan of Dickenson's vocals but it's easy to overlook with how bright the rest of the components shine here.

Funny how i never liked this music until my son became a fan and I heard this all the time. I now love this album too and the covers are amazing…

Run to the Hills might be one of the best songs ever.

It's a bit odd but I never bought any Iron Maiden records, not even this one, despite having a lot of love for Run To The Hills and The Number of the Beast.

Today is a special day, at least for my 1001 Albums project. For one, today marks the point where I have been doing this thing for 2 whole years. I started on October 5, 2023. Today is October 4, 2025. This album marks the end of my second year of the project. That's a big deal, but there's another, more obvious reason as to why today is special for the project. The reason? It's Iron freakin' Maiden! That alone is enough for me to call this day special. There's a reason why Iron Maiden are widely considered to be among the greatest metal bands of all time. It's because they are. This is my second album of theirs after their self-titled debut. That album was great and all, but The Number of the Beast is on a whole other level. This thing is fantastic. It's among the best metal albums I've ever listened to. This album's actually very important for Iron Maiden as a band, and I consider this to be the point where they became "the Iron Maiden you know and love." The core was still there on the first album, but there are a number of factors that lead to this being a turning point in the band's career. Take the lineup change for instance. Paul Di'Anno was great and all, but there's a reason why Bruce Dickinson is Iron Maiden's most beloved vocalist. His voice is big and operatic and I love it. The sheer power that gets added to these songs through his voice is just a spectacle. Of course, the instrumentalists are just as excellent. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith exchange their guitar parts so effortlessly to create such exciting riffs and solos, Steve Harris has got to be one of the greatest metal bassists of all time, and Clive Burr's drumming is on-point here, even though this was his last album with the band. Very tight performances all throughout and I love it. You know what I love even more? The songs. This album's got some fantastic tracks on it. The first half is pretty cool. "Invaders" is a strong opener. "Children of the Damned" is easily the first half's highlight. It's got some great emotion to it. "The Prisoner" and "22 Acacia Avenue" are pretty good, but then the second half hits you with 3 of the greatest metal songs of the 80s and also "Gangland." Okay, "Gangland" is good and pretty underrated, but with that said I do prefer the b-side that could've replaced it, "Total Eclipse." Those other 3 songs though? Fantastic. The title track just encapsulates everything great about this band. The opening riff, epic vocals and writing, and general pacing is just so cool. I love it. "Run to the Hills" is this album's most popular song. It's great. Maybe a little overrated, but still deserving of its popularity. It's probably the best metal song about the mistreatment of Native Americans, though Anthrax's "Indians" is a pretty close second. And then, we get the album's closer, "Hallowed Be Thy Name." This fucking song. It's the fan-favorite and for good reason. It's the album's best song and a perfect closer. The enticing opening section, the epic riff, Bruce's amazing vocals. Everything comes together perfectly. The same could be said about this album. While there are other albums that contend for the title of "Best Iron Maiden Album," there's no denying that The Number of the Beast has an important place in the history of both Iron Maiden and heavy metal at large. This album's excellent. 5/5.

One of my all time favourite albums! This is metal at its energetic best!

1001 Albums Challenge (9/1001) 1. Invaders (4/5) 2. Children Of The Damned (5/5) 3. The Prisoner (5/5) 4. 22 Acacia Avenue (5/5) 5. The Number Of The Beast (5/5) 6. Run To The Hills (5/5) 7. Gangland (5/5) 8. Hallowed Be Thy Name (5/5) Total (5/5)

Totally shocked by how utterly amazing this was

JAAAAAAA

Great album, great band, one of my favourites. Glad this is in the 1001.

I love maiden. This is one of the best if not the best album they've made.

Favourite track(s): The Prisoner; The Number Of The Beast; Run To The Hills This sounds like music the band had fun playing! Very engaging tempo and instrumentals, that is for sure. The lyrics invite you to join in (although I think guys like Dio show stronger vocal performance). To me, this feels like THE cliché heavy metal album - sometimes so over the top that it seems ridiculous. Maybe not everyone's genre but perfectly executed even upon repeat listenings.

great album, short but sweet. loved the aggressive vibe of iron maiden

Very sick

Ya. Ya. Ya.

Amazing

This isn't my favourite Maiden album. I don't think this is Maiden's best album... but, man, is it a great and important album nontheless. I don't like the chorus of Invaders and I don't care for Gangland completely, but the rest is pure perfection. Every other song is an Iron Maiden classic played live to this day. Just incredible! 5/5

Fuck yeah

Even with two duff tracks still and all time great

A banger, and a solid 5. Not my favourite Maiden album, but is pretty flawless. Invaders and Gangland may not rank amongst the other tunes, but are still good. Bruce’s first album and the album that was the flagship for Maiden’s ascendency into Metal godliness. That’s not to say their previous albums were poor in any way, just that this was a real statement of intent. A Metal classic, and no arguments.

Is it cheesy? Absolutely. Is it dated? Most definitely. But damn it's a good time. Will always have a soft spot for this album, and although the lyricism can be hit or miss, the musicianship is on point. And what a finishing track!

I kind of thought I'd have to slog through this but was pleasantly surprised. I've heard a handful of Iron Maiden songs in the past, including two of these, but they never seemed that great. But put them in the middle of a solid album and everything comes together. 5*

What can I say. One of their best

If you don't like this, simply, you are wrong. I fucking love Iron Maiden, and every track on this album is amazing.

I liked this album and I'm sure it would grow on me with even more listens.

My first vinyl purchase in 1982. Listened to it dozens and dozens and dozens of times. My mom thought I was a Satan worshipper (people actually burned this album). Total Eclipse was missing on the OG release, replaced by Gangland - which is the only song on the album I even consider skipping. I’m glad the 1998 remaster (and most subsequent re-releases) included them both. This is my favorite Maiden album - although I admittedly love them all (except perhaps the Blaze Daze) Total game-changer in 1982. Easy 5 ⭐️. UP THE IRONS !!!

Супер класика. Давненько не слухав, то залюбки прогнав

Я дуже люблю цей гурт.

Insanely good. No real notes. Favorites: Hallowed be thy Name, Children of the Damned, and Run to the Hills. 10/10, 5 stars.

Great musicianship, killer vocals, lots of bangers, amazing album covers and incredible live. Maiden is easily a top 10 band for me.

Surely this has to be the most succesful album of Iron Maiden? And what an album this is! I have heard it a couple of times, so I'm probably a bit biased, but I think it's very strong. Crazy that they managed to get 'Children of The Damned', 'Run To The Hills', and 'Number Of The Beast' on the same record! I noticed that this was the first album Bruce Dickinson appeared on. What a way to enter a new band. While I appreciate Iron Maidens previous works, I can't stop thinking about what an absolute powerhouse of a singer he is. While the rest of the music can stand on its own two legs itself, he definitely brings that extra spice to the table that brings this album brings to the next level. The guitar play and overall composition on this album definitely are unmatched by few. They definitely take advantage of the two guitars by playing different octaves and lines, which elevates the riffs. Some memorable solos as well. While the 3 songs I mentioned in the beginning almost grants this album 5 stars on their own, I think the tracks in between, while not as strong, are also fairly decent. Honorary mention to 'Invaders' and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' which were the best of those. Overall this is one of the best heavy metal albums I can think of at a glance. Easy 5 stars.

Sometime you just feel like some old school heavy metal, then this is the perfect album. I remember discovering Iron Maiden when I was about 14 (which seems like the perfect age). I used to listen to it while going church for my confirmation lectures, quite a juxtaposition. This is probably one of the best Iron Maiden albums. You have “Children of the damned”, “Number of the Beast”, “Run to the Hills” and my favourite “Hallowed be thy name”. It’s quite an achievement to get all these hits on one album. Iron Maiden is on top form on this album. Melodic guitars, good vocals and pulpy lyrics. It has that fun, cartoonish feel. My only gripe is “Gangland” which is a pretty terrible track. Other than that I don’t have many notes. It’s just a plain good album. Sure, there maybe isn’t much depth to the lyrics but every album doesn’t have to be an introspective poem. It’s not the most technical or heavy album, but it doesn’t need to be! 5 out 5 for pure energy and the memories.

This is the one Iron Maiden I actually owned growing up. What a string of absolute bangers.

One of the best and most influential metal albums ever, a true classic. Sonic signifiers that became standard for a whole sub-genre of metal - chugging riffs, dueling double/triple guitar leads, soaring vocals. I love it.

What can I say? I love this stuff. The music rocks, and I never get tired of it. Vocals are great. This is Bruce Dickinson's first album with the band, and he does a fantastic job. However, it's the music that truly makes Iron Maiden shine. I look forward to the guitar solos and awesome, unique riffs each song. Listening to albums like these brings me back to the days where I would play Guitar Hero with my brother and just rock out for hours. It was such a fun listen and a big breath of fresh air after having so many back-to-back folk and hip hop albums.

Sabbath may have started metal, but Maiden perfected it, and in doing so inspired generations of bands after. This album was not only the first I heard of theirs, it was also the first with new frontman Bruce Dickinson, whose voice has been called “The Human Air Raid Siren.” This line up would drive Maiden to legendary status for the next decade and five consecutive legendary albums. Number of the Beast is an automatic head-banging classic, with speed and precision playing paired with Dickinson’s soaring vocals. Look at any metal playlist on Spotify and you’ll find it as well as Invaders, and Run to the Hills, also in this album. My favorites have always been the deeper cuts like Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Prisoner, Children of the Damned and 22 Acadia Ave., each with operatic and prog-rock influences. Since Gangland is the only song not yet mentioned, it’s impossible to not appreciate Nicki McBrain’s drum assault intro and Steve Harris’s patented galloping bass line. Now that I’ve mentioned every song, I safely reiterate: it’s a classic, and it’s still scaring conservative Christians forty years later… 🥰

Loved this album as a teenager. And it’s still a cracking album today.

I remember when I was 15 and sent this to a girl I was keen on because I thought it was cool and she would like it but instead said I was a weirdo for listening to this masterpiece. go fuck yourself, isabella

A lot better than something with this much mention of rape/molestation has any right to be. Really kicks into gear for the last two thirds (from the title track onward) and closing out brilliantly with Hallowed be thy name. Bruce Dickinson has a stronger energy in his vocal performance than Paul Di'Anno (RIP) had and is better suited to this direction the band took from their first album

Albums that made evangelical mothers quake in their boots because SATAN was going to make their children play DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS and perhaps USE HAIRSPRAY. EVIL MUSIC for DEVIL WORSHIPPERS 0/10...

I cannot imagine how many people gave Iron Maiden a listen because of their album art, I would guess it's responsible for 90% of their fanbase. I obsessed over Iron Maiden as a teenager, this album in particular. I don't think it's their best work (that would be Powerslave) but in no way is that a criticism. There are no skips on this album, and the second half of the album is loaded with hits, containing arguably the best song of their entire discography in Hallowed Be Thy Name. There is no scenario in which I give this anything less than a 5, even as 15ish years have passed since I first heard this and as my music taste has evolved (debatable), I will always have a fondness for Iron Maiden and I don't give a shit how corny that makes me. Highlights: All of it, up the irons

CLASSIC

Great fuckin metal album. The riffs and melodies and changes are just awesome. The whole album is just AWESOME AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Maiden always seemed super uncool to me for ages but older wiser me now appreciates how much they rule. This is their best

Amazing album, one of the best metal albums of all time
