I don’t get it

This album sounded to me like a synthesizer in store demo mode. I realize that's likely ignoring the historical significance, and that in 1974 these sounds and style may have been groundbreaking, but it just came off as very vanilla electronic music.

For what it is, it's fine, but this sure felt longer than 38 minutes. Kinda liked the first track, kinda bored by the rest.

This band was obviously very prominent and influential in the electronic and ambient music scene. Those types of music aren't something I'd generally listen to on a regular basis. I thought this record was a bit boring and minimal, but I guess that's the point. I am glad I listened to it though, definitely worth including on this list.

cool origins of edm but too weird

Well, only part of the album was available on Spotify, but what I could listen to sounded like what would be playing when you’re walking through one of those airport tunnels with the trippy lights.

Nice work, generator. Contemporary reviews on the wiki for yesterday’s Jean-Michel Jarre album compared it (unfavourably) to Tangerine Dream, so now’s a good time for me to decide for myself. I found Phaedra to be more symphonic (less poppy), perhaps more sophisticated, certainly more eerie, and undeniably earlier to the party than Oxygène. But as good? Not for me. Feels like something that’d work well as a soundtrack but it's not very enjoyable to listen to on its own. It gets a 2nd star for pushing/smashing through some of the musical boundaries of its time.

At times unsettling and other times just fades away into the background, fades so far I forgot I was listening to anything. I can't really grasp this - undoubtedly a fascinating audio experiment and something that surely broke new ground - but an album to return to? I will pass.

Ten times better than whatever random noises aphex twin is putting together and calling music, which, unfortunately, still makes it experimental stuff not for me.

What is this? Some sort of a progressive-electronic-ambient album?

This sounds like it could have been the soundtrack to a trippy '70s sci-fi movie, or a more recent film with a retro vibe, like "Beyond the Black Rainbow." It's not something I'd generally listen to, but I imagine it'd be quite the experience after taking some psychedelics. 2.5 stars.

An impressive early influence to all sorts of modern electronic music, the German scene in the late 60's and 70's was awash with Discotheques ready to nurture this kind of music. The greater use of synthesizers and sequencers will go on to shape an entire genre. Ultimately though, it fell a bit flat to me. Though wildly influential this is not something I would put on for myself. I'm glad I checked the track listing online and only listened to the proper album and not the two hours of bonus content

Långa låtar, första nästan 18 minuter, där inget händer. Mer passande bakgrundsmusik i en film, men inget jag vill lyssna på bara för att lyssna. Kul kuriosa att Tangerine Dream hjälpte göra soundtracket till GTA V.

OK, Wikipedia tells me this album was historically important. I accept that, even if I've never heard of it before. Regardless of history, today I found this an album about nothing. But unlike Seinfeld, which is excellent through and through, this music is going nowhere.

I'm sure it's historically important but it didn't seem that compelling to me. I was really into 'ambient' music in the early 2000s - I can see some of the lineage. 2 stars because I didn't have to turn it off and I was able to listen to it multiple times.

Ok, I appreciate the ambient trailblazing going on here, but this is not my bag.

This would probably be a vibe if I was high. In fact, I feel like I'm getting kind of a contact high from listening alone, which is admittedly pretty cool. However, with all my wits about me, this sounds like little more than movie sound effects pieced together into songs.

This could be the Oscar nominated soundtrack from Dances With Whales. It stars Kevin Costner as an irascible, old, ship captain who sails the world aimlessly while seeking meaning for his life through the song of the sea. Spoiler alert. Much like this album, that meaning is nowhere to be found.

Heard of this group, didn't realize they made 100 albums or scored GTA5 (sick). Weird alien space electronic music. Mostly calming but sometimes spooky. Sounds like it could be the score for a 80s sci-fi film.. I believe this sounds ahead of it's time, but not really for me. 2.5/5

The very essence of "in one ear and out the other". None of this was bad, per se, but other than some cool switching between audio sources, there isn't much here.

I shit my pants when this album appeared on the 1001 albums generator. I've really got to listen to this? It's WAY out of my comfort zone. My highly refined musical prejudices should make me run a mile from this shit. I needn't have worried. It was the first thing I listened to today. It was the perfect soundtrack for my online catch up as I slowly eased into the morning with endless mugs of hot tea. It got a little Dungeons and Dragons. I came close to bailing. Soundscapes drifted in and out, not quite sufficient to grab my attention, but decent background music all the same. I probably would feel a little different if I wanted a buzzing off yer tits Friday night album.

The first 2 tracks of this album weren't available on Spotify so I went and found them on YouTube. Interesting that this is most likely the shortest album on the list so far, and if it isn't then it's definitely the shortest track-amount wise. Nice album overall, gives off classical "new music" vibes to me. Early synth work in this space with lots of repetition for an output that is meditative and reflective. Slightly boring.

Best Song: Not applicable. Worst Song: Not applicable. Overall: This is ethereal space music. I'm not sure whether it is good ethereal space music, but that is what it is. It feels like music that would be best listened to while absolutely blitzkrieged in a planetarium, but when just sitting at work, staring at spreadsheets, it comes off as a little tedious. Context is key for this one.

This is irritating me profoundly. One or two tracks fine; but a whole album of wishy washy flute tunes is abysmal to experience. Spa music.

Part of me thinks I'll finally quit doing this daily exercise after I score 100 albums with a 5. If I even get to 100. But I still have a lot of Beatles albums to rate, the two Van Halen and Michael Jackson albums I know are getting 5's. I'm currently at 70, and the Fabs, Jacko and VH should push me to 80. That leaves me with 20 surprises, which is what still brings me to this site every day. This is a long way to say that Tangerine Dream does not present a case for being one of those twentysomething surprises.

I like Can and Kraftwerk and thought this would be a cross between the 2. It's really ambient though and I barely noticed it being on. Disappointing.

After The Lexicon of Love (which has been on constant for more than the day that was allowed), this just feels really boring. I always struggle with music that doesn't go anywhere. It wasn't on iTunes and only the remixed/extended 2 hrs 35 mins version is on Spotify. The first song is more than 17.5 mins. Wikipedia tells me the original album is just the four songs. I'm sure it's important in the development of electronica and ambient music....but 12 mins in to that first song and nothing much has happened. Noodling for stoners

This was the first electronic music album that I'll evaluate with more than 1 star. The first song has a dreamy sensation that is likable, but it's still that kind of European electronic song that's absolutely not my kind of thing.

I searched through my old high school yearbooks but couldn't track down my drug dealer from back in the day. Pity. This album would have been great on acid.

Historically interesting prog-electronica from the 70s when it must have been super uncool. Can't imagine these German guys where rocking at hotel parties with hookers and blow. Still cool to learn about the process and how they made it. Sounds better than much of the electronic music today, but still basically ambient and not quickly fades into the background.

Do you know what a sequencer is? In short, it’s a tool that lets you input sounds of various pitches and arrange them into a repeating pattern. Well, this album by the avant-garde electronic group Tangerine Dream was the first to be recorded using sequencers; in essence, it pioneered the so-called "Berlin School" of electronic music. That’s an impressive distinction, yet the record ultimately sounds like the soundtrack to an old Soviet space movie. In fact, the whole thing feels just like one of those films: it was probably incredible back in the day, but now the sets look dated and the special effects seem laughable. You might assume that appreciating this music requires a brilliant mind, but when the artists themselves admit that certain melodies sound the way they do because the sequencer’s settings kept drifting, you have to wonder — can this even be called music?

This album wasn’t on spotify (only two of its songs were) so I had to listen to it on youtube - which didn’t bode well. Never have I been so happy for an album to be over. I strongly strongly dislike this. I’m glad that music of this type (eg ambient soundscapes) are on this list but I personally did NOT enjoy this one. It made me anxious and stressed. I can see why this is absolutely some people’s cup of tea and I can also see how this could be completely transformative for some people - but it’s decidedly not for me, and that’s ok.

Feels like a very long intro to a song like Kuiper by Floating Points, but it never gets anywhere. I guess that's the true ambient genre - one you have to already be in the mood for. I was not. I guess the history lesson is nice. 1974! Berlin's been weird a long time. But if history is the reason to listen, then the first album recording wolf howls better be on here.

Boring

Going into Phaedra by Tangerine Dream, I’ll be honest and say this is not normally the type of music I would enjoy at all. Long instrumental electronic albums are usually not my thing, and on paper this sounded like exactly the sort of record I tend to struggle with. That said, knowing this was made in 1974 and helped shape electronic music as we know it makes it impossible not to respect. For its time, this sounds incredibly progressive, ambitious and way ahead of the curve, so I was genuinely interested to see what I would make of it. I ended up really enjoying this. It’s the kind of album that works brilliantly in the background — immersive, atmospheric and unlike anything else I’ve heard on the list so far. There’s something hypnotic about it, and once you settle into its rhythm, it becomes a very absorbing listen. One thing worth mentioning is that it was surprisingly difficult to track down, as it wasn’t available on Apple Music or Spotify, so I had to listen to it on YouTube. Despite that extra effort, I’m glad I did, because this is definitely an album I could see myself coming back to. When it comes to electronic music I like mine to be rhythmic and catchy, especially when combined with the harshness of industrial music. This just feels way too ambient for my tastes, I could not get through all of it. This feels like the backing track to a hawkwind song minus the guitars and drumming

I’ll be totally honest, I hated this. It’s not garbage, it’s not so bad that I didn’t understand why it was on the list like other albums I’ve given a one to before, I can see the obvious talent and work that went into this album. This is sort of embarrassing to admit but this album legitimately gave me uncomfortable anxiety that just kept digging in deeper. It was incredibly unpleasant and I really hated getting through this album. I tried to give it a few extra chances but each time I hated equally as much as the last. Kinda confused about this one cause I’m usually naturally into crazy electronic music.

"Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream, a German band - which I'd never heard of before, despite being German myself. Probably because this isn't the kind of music I usually listen to. Very spacey, very experimental '70s electronic, packed with synthesizers. Definitely not my taste, but I can see the appeal for fans of the genre.

I got about 15 minutes into the first song before I decide I could not take over two more hours of this. Not for me :)

Shifting, slowly evolving electronic layers built from shimmering analog synths, drifting sequencer pulses, and vast, wordless atmospheres move this electronic album like watching frost form on a windowpane. At first the quietly shifting, hypnotic, and absorbing atmosphere is interesting then rapidely boring me enough to asking myself when the end of the album puts me out of my misery.

I respect the history, and if I ever find myself in need of atmospheric film music I know where to go.. but ultimately it's not really sit down and listen to music?

Jesus slowly and bitterly wept into a tiny crystal cup. This is absolutely dreadful. It's barely worth describing, because it's just so infuriating and stupid. Talented guys making weird atmospheric noise without any purpose. I say this as someone who likes ambient, who likes quietness, and who quite likes weird, purposeless atmospheric noise, but it's just dreadful.

If you want to listen to a majorly atmospheric album you should try Houmous & Chutney’s anti CFC record ‘At Most Peers’ directed towards the House of Lords when they didn’t pass a law banning them! 0.3 14/14 Organ Piece (I’ll be forever grateful for the final track ending my misery)

Seltsam. Spotify zeigt nur zwei Songs in dem Album an, schreibt aber unten hin, es seien vier und das ganze 37 Minuten lang. Ansonsten gab es noch die 2 1/2 Stunden Deluxeversion. Nein danke. Ist nicht so meins. Nicht so nervig wie andere elektronische Alben hier, aber was war das? Das hat mich weder unterhalten noch berührt, es plätscherte einfach vor sich hin.

I still don't understand how all these one-off weird electronic albums get on this list, but some major artists/groups (mostly from the early 2000's) are left off. This is literally mass produced videogame background music.

Music of the spheres. Which means: Not very exciting or interesting or anything much at all, unless you're under the influence of mind-altering substances. Sure, the sounds are groundbreaking for their time, so I know why it's on the list. But I may just as well just listen to the surf rolling in and out again for hours at the beach.

I got halfway through this on Friday. When I found on Monday that I still had half to go, I groaned "Oh, God." And it didn't get any better. I see this crowd have 127 albums. I hope that at least one of them is at least a little better than this.

This is way to out there for me. Maybe I'm just not in the right headspace for it but 3 out of 4 songs i disliked. The last one was okay but sounded more like something that should be in the background of a movie scene then something that I would listen to when wanting music.

Twaddle felt like i was l listening to a game load on the spectrum in the 80s.

I just think a lot of people in the 70s didn't know how to start and end songs. Intros go on forever with nothing really happening, something mildly interesting happens for a couple of minutes in the middle and then the song sounds like it's done, but no! Surprise fake out! Have another 5 minutes. Urgh. I think punk started not as a backlash to all the animal noises and ambient bollocks, but just because they wanted to show it was possible to create a fully formed 3 minute long song. Anyway, I knew I was going to hate this from the first 3 minutes of the 17 minute first track. Either we've been extremely unlucky with the randomness of the generator, or the makers of this book were obsessed with 70s nonsense that feels like it'll never bloody end. This is nowhere near as unlistenable as some of my previous 1 star albums, but given it actively made me grumpy: 1/5

To say this was not my thing is an understatement. I almost want to apologize to the other albums that were given a 1 in this journey because this was next level below.

Did I make it to the end of track 1, or halfway through track 2? I have no idea since I didn't look when I hit stop, and the first two tracks were ridiculously long. It was some absolutely boring slop that wasn't even worth being background noise. It's like listening to meditation music to help you sleep, which I get why people enjoy... but it does not need to be anything you need to hear before you die.

lowkey kinda creepy. not really my vibe. didn’t help that i listened in a dark room. there just isn’t a lot going on. a shame, since this this was a pioneering album for electronic music. i respect it and how it may have shaped the electronic style but just cannot get behind it. 1/5

Truly pointless

While not acoustically offensive, this felt like a whole lotta nothing. I had it on the background and it went completely unnoticed. Fine but very unnecessary for this list.

Felt like this had been going forever and I was only on song 2. As a big Pink Floyd fan, I’m no stranger to songs that go on for a long time but at least those songs have David Gilmour’s guitar to keep things interesting. This was just a lot nothing tbh.

# 404 : drearey Electronic noise is just not me. I think I went to sleep a couple of times Hahahaha zzzzzz. I thought it was very ordinary and Quiet forgettable. Way too long as well with a 17 minute opening track!, and as someone else said, life became a loading screen that was stuck for around 40 minutes. Might be alright in an elevator when you're stoned or as background music but that's about it.
