Reviews (page 7 of 7)
"Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream, a German band - which I'd never heard of before, despite being German myself. Probably because this isn't the kind of music I usually listen to. Very spacey, very experimental '70s electronic, packed with synthesizers. Definitely not my taste, but I can see the appeal for fans of the genre.
I got about 15 minutes into the first song before I decide I could not take over two more hours of this. Not for me :)
Not on Amazon Music
Really not my thing.
Shifting, slowly evolving electronic layers built from shimmering analog synths, drifting sequencer pulses, and vast, wordless atmospheres move this electronic album like watching frost form on a windowpane. At first the quietly shifting, hypnotic, and absorbing atmosphere is interesting then rapidely boring me enough to asking myself when the end of the album puts me out of my misery.
I respect the history, and if I ever find myself in need of atmospheric film music I know where to go.. but ultimately it's not really sit down and listen to music?
I fear I don't like instrumental songs
What a load of old wank.
Yup this makes sense but zero Donna Summer. Checks out.
i dont like being all cynical and reductive but theres only so many "da doo doo"s i can listen to in one sitting. i like to imagine them in the studio standing around being like "oh yeah need some more bleep boops here definitely, maybe axe the whee woo?"
God what a bunch of ambient shit
Boring trippy ambient nonsense
1.5
I appreciate this isn't for everyone. But I dont personally find it relaxing when I'm lying in bed listening to the sound of an alien abduction 1 ⭐️
...i'm sorry, what? not certain if this link is correct - perhaps it is meant to be the deluxe release, which has...more than the two aongs this one does?
0/5 did not listen
what the fuck
Shite.
Bookmarked for the next time I need a break from Lofi Girl
The same sound for 35 minutes. Inoffensive but ultimately pointless.
Disquieting
There was the odd fleeting moment where it didn't annoy me
Well, I listened to it. I won’t again unless I randomly need some ethereal electronic music.
Boring spa music
Good alien landing music. But I don't get it
Nej tack!
Jag finner personligen ingen mening i ambient musik. Jag vill inte ha bakgrundsmusik, jag vill lyssna på musik.
This could come in really useful, I was fast asleep after only 7 minutes. An insomniacs dream, if there is such a thing.
What makes an ambient album good? Like how does one delineate between bad ambient and good?
01) Phaedra - 5,0 02) Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares - 5,0 03) Movements of a Visionary - 4,0 04) Sequent C - 3,0 TOTAL: 4,25 (43/100) Current ranking: 671/690
How is this one of the best albums ever
1/5 - bleh it's a skill to make something musically interesting sound so boring so props to that. Absolutely not for me though tbh. Gave me anxiety actually, kinda sounds like what a panic attack feels like...
1/5
Jesus slowly and bitterly wept into a tiny crystal cup. This is absolutely dreadful. It's barely worth describing, because it's just so infuriating and stupid. Talented guys making weird atmospheric noise without any purpose. I say this as someone who likes ambient, who likes quietness, and who quite likes weird, purposeless atmospheric noise, but it's just dreadful.
If you want to listen to a majorly atmospheric album you should try Houmous & Chutney’s anti CFC record ‘At Most Peers’ directed towards the House of Lords when they didn’t pass a law banning them! 0.3 14/14 Organ Piece (I’ll be forever grateful for the final track ending my misery)
Only half the album was available on Spotify but that’s all I needed. Boring soundscapes with no traditional song structure.
weird. not the kind of electronic i like. Didnt sound like music
Noises
Just some kraut wanking off his synth for fucking hours.
A tough listen because I thought it was shit.
I bet at some point in time, before keyboards were available that this was some kind of revolutionary madness that set the precedent for many albums. That doesn't make it a musically good/enjoyable album.
Crap
This is giving me anxiety because of the music and the font on the album cover. Make it stop.
I had to turn this off halfway through as it was giving me a headache. Definitely not for me
Seltsam.
Bad album cover (the revisited version I heard had a fucking blue alien as the cover), boring music
huh, is this an album to listen and watch while getting high? Not my cuppa
vu la couverture jspr que ce sera pas trop expérimental C'était purement instrumental
I still don't understand how all these one-off weird electronic albums get on this list, but some major artists/groups (mostly from the early 2000's) are left off. This is literally mass produced videogame background music.
Phaedra (2/10) Mysterious Semblance at the Strand if Nightmares (2/10) Movements of a Visionary (2/10) Sequent C (6/10) 3/10
Pretty terrible. I am not opposed to ambient music, but these tunes just went on for EVER. 1/5
Music of the spheres. Which means: Not very exciting or interesting or anything much at all, unless you're under the influence of mind-altering substances. Sure, the sounds are groundbreaking for their time, so I know why it's on the list. But I may just as well just listen to the surf rolling in and out again for hours at the beach.
In my book a record with two songs is a Single, not ana album.
No thanks.
I got halfway through this on Friday. When I found on Monday that I still had half to go, I groaned "Oh, God." And it didn't get any better. I see this crowd have 127 albums. I hope that at least one of them is at least a little better than this.
Unknown band for me. Not a fan of electronic music. OK album.
No. Triggers my misophonia
I don’t get it. If this was on in the background I wouldn’t even notice it
1+ Stars (3/15)
This is way to out there for me. Maybe I'm just not in the right headspace for it but 3 out of 4 songs i disliked. The last one was okay but sounded more like something that should be in the background of a movie scene then something that I would listen to when wanting music.
Twaddle felt like i was l listening to a game load on the spectrum in the 80s.
I don’t have the words to express how bad this was.
I just think a lot of people in the 70s didn't know how to start and end songs. Intros go on forever with nothing really happening, something mildly interesting happens for a couple of minutes in the middle and then the song sounds like it's done, but no! Surprise fake out! Have another 5 minutes. Urgh. I think punk started not as a backlash to all the animal noises and ambient bollocks, but just because they wanted to show it was possible to create a fully formed 3 minute long song. Anyway, I knew I was going to hate this from the first 3 minutes of the 17 minute first track. Either we've been extremely unlucky with the randomness of the generator, or the makers of this book were obsessed with 70s nonsense that feels like it'll never bloody end. This is nowhere near as unlistenable as some of my previous 1 star albums, but given it actively made me grumpy: 1/5
To say this was not my thing is an understatement. I almost want to apologize to the other albums that were given a 1 in this journey because this was next level below.
Esse álbum é extremamente bizarro
First song is 17 minutes long fuck out of here.
Did I make it to the end of track 1, or halfway through track 2? I have no idea since I didn't look when I hit stop, and the first two tracks were ridiculously long. It was some absolutely boring slop that wasn't even worth being background noise. It's like listening to meditation music to help you sleep, which I get why people enjoy... but it does not need to be anything you need to hear before you die.
Not for me
I’m just confused. What the hell? Am I supposed to be high while listening to this? Am I high right now?
So bad wtf
An album with this little effort put in doesn't even deserve the dignity of a review.
self indulgent shite
I'm sure it was groundbreaking for its time, kept waiting for the beat to drop or somthing, nah its just all tension no realse, better ambient music out there.
Ah yeah... cue the random noise generator. Not for me
Really not for me don’t know if I’m not a fan of ambient or just this but was so bored the whole way through nothing going on
lowkey kinda creepy. not really my vibe. didn’t help that i listened in a dark room. there just isn’t a lot going on. a shame, since this this was a pioneering album for electronic music. i respect it and how it may have shaped the electronic style but just cannot get behind it. 1/5
Sauna music. I can appreciate it, but that's about it.
Just because it's weird doesn't make it good or an album
Envelheceu mal
Crap
I’m done listening to electronic music on this list
Truly pointless
While not acoustically offensive, this felt like a whole lotta nothing. I had it on the background and it went completely unnoticed. Fine but very unnecessary for this list.
Felt like this had been going forever and I was only on song 2. As a big Pink Floyd fan, I’m no stranger to songs that go on for a long time but at least those songs have David Gilmour’s guitar to keep things interesting. This was just a lot nothing tbh.
I got sleep
Ambient boring shit
Meh, bunch of noise
Unfassbar schlecht. Album aus zwei „Songs“ die sich anhören wie eine Aneinanderreihung von irgendwelchen Tönen und Geräuschen. Unfassbarer Bullshit…
Utterly boring.
Too slow and not interesting
Eletronic ambiente music earlys 70. No listening again.
Brian Eno’s music for an alien abduction. “If we’re going to listen to artists from 80s horror soundtracks, I’d prefer Goblin” -John
# 404 : drearey Electronic noise is just not me. I think I went to sleep a couple of times Hahahaha zzzzzz. I thought it was very ordinary and Quiet forgettable. Way too long as well with a 17 minute opening track!, and as someone else said, life became a loading screen that was stuck for around 40 minutes. Might be alright in an elevator when you're stoned or as background music but that's about it.
yay, another "ethereal sounds" album! Juuuuuust what I needed ... not
Not really sometimes that appeals to me, i found this music a little boring tbh
Nah bruh
Yes, I HAVE to listen to this. Awesome thanks.
This was a nothing album
Wtf was this?
Garbage
I want to like this, but it's just so abrasive in the most dull way possible, I moved between bored and annoyed in equal measures. How does that happen? At least throbbing gristle wasn't dull...
This is unstructured ambient noise. I couldn’t finish it.
Today's album is weird. It's like the music in the que while in line for some educational ride at EPCOT
atmospheric, long, boring, everything sounds the same
Just was not the kind of thing I needed - too weird and heavy
nah
One of many albums that affirms my believe that electronic music has not aged well. Maybe pretty lights and other contemporaries will age better? This sounds like captain kirks nightmare.
It's a step above white noise if I wanted to listen to music. Could be good for a movie scene but not really something that I'd want to listen to on its own. 2/10
Science documentary music. ...Kraftwerk for dead people.
Weird, experimental techno
Too boring. Ambient...
Knightrider did it better
First track gave me anxiety. Pass!
Ground control to Major Tom.. don’t listen to this album, it’s total garbage.
I could not listen to this
Just dull....I really didn't care for this at all.
te wacky
Dull
Weird. Wouldn’t listen to again.
Don’t like one bit
Another one that doesn’t belong on this list
Pasting default message that despite keeping an open mind my county tends to vote down the more pure electronica albums.
Spent more time being irritated by this than enjoying it. It’s probably groundbreaking for its genre but I just don’t see this as routinely listenable?!
Just didn’t care for it at all unfortunately
Is it music or background noise?
Sounds like the soundtrack to some B-rated movie
Blegh.
1-2
So fucking boring I almost died
Beep boop keyboard smashy... Pass
Never a time nor place for this. I suppose if you needed a movie score. On fact, I'd like to see a separate artist write and produce a full album music vid.
I wouldn’t really call this music. It’s more like sounds, and I can see it being used in movies, or as a space or robotic type background noise, but it’s not music. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: none
I think spotify is missing a track or 2. but that’s okay - i saw what i needed. when im ready to go to space ill ping bezos and ask him to put me on a blue origin rocket. then ill ensure this album plays on repeat. until then ill never listen to this trash garbanzo music again
“One of the most influential electronic albums ever!!!” My dude this is just 1 note with some rain, wind, and ocean sound effects over it for like 45 minutes
70s ASMR? I suppose it might be nice background music for working. In all honesty I didn’t get through the entire album, only got to the track “Movements of a Visionary” I guess I’m not seeing the vision.
Not a huge fan, but I can see that it was a very forward thinking and groundbreaking release in 1974
I'll probably sound extremely ignorant saying this—especially to the fans of electronic music—but 'Phaedra' sounds like the kind of stuff they'd play at a spa to quickly put you to sleep. Sure, it may be significant to the genre, but I don't get why I'd listen to this unless I'd want to completely float away and disengage (this is the kind of music you play and forget it's on). Either that or put it on if you're having trouble falling asleep—I bet it works wonders. 1.5 stars (+0,5 stars 'cause it's not unpleasant, just extremely boring, sleepy, and repetitive)
Torture. Took actual effort to tolerate this. And wasn’t worth it in the slightest.
What in the ET phones home is this? Supposedly this is some ground breaking electronic music but to me it just seems like something guys came up with stoned out of their mind taking about aliens. Aliens! This was kind of calming and good for background noise but still lame.3.0/10
nope
An album can be groundbreaking and still be rubbish. I get how electronica needed influences like this, I can also agree that it is a movement that lacks musical merit.
Weird Obscure German techno - gave me a headache within the first 5 minutes....
סינגלים
I don’t get it
boring as hell, nothing happened, doesn’t belong on the generator
Science center ambiance sounds. 1/10
Not awful, just wholly unnecessary.
great music for a doctor’s office that hates it’s patients!
Meh
I've tried Tangerine Dream before but it does nothing for me. Just boring droning noises.
Hated every minute of this
My opinion hasn't changed in all this time. Still boring, self-indulgent, synth noise.
Pointless, pointless sythy, windy, oceany whispers -- the kind of music that would make heaven hell.
Thanks, I hate it
Pure Electronica - not for me.
Awful, and not all songs available on Spotify
Hated it
Ufff
Admittedly couldn't finish this one. Didn't even finish the first song. I can't sit and patiently listen to ambient noise.
14 songs, 2 hrs and 35 minutes. Synth.
Whoever put this list together's intent is for me to commit suicide
Its not that I cant die without listening to it. Its that I almost died listening to this crap.
First listen Saved 0/4
Not for me.
I do not wanna listen to this album, so here’s me just getting the review out of the way. DNF/5.
Absolutely terrible, had to lower the speaker volume to avoid embarrassment, how do I even explain listening to these random noises... It's not even background noise, it's worse.
Shit
Not my style.
Pretentious piffle
Yea, this is not for me. I can appreciate it for what it accomplished and inspired in others, but it just wasn’t an enjoyable listen for me. I think a lot of the sounds and sequencing were nice, but I desired more musical movement. I didn’t really receive any closure, and it seemed to be devoid of any dynamics that required closure in the first place.
Found it hard to engage with the emotion depth of the music
wat
Not my jam
Not for me. And that's ok!
Meh
This mostly sounds like background music for watching the night sky, but you want to turn it off and just enjoy the view.
It's not a great sign when I check how many tracks are on an album while listening and think "oh good, only four".
This didn't do anything for me. Pretty boring, and I guess I didn't get it. 1.49/5
What
Weird not for me
What in the twilight zone spa therapy music is this?
I’m not high. Therefore I’m not into this sound bath
Maybe ok to meditate too, I was listening in the car and I forgot I was even listing to an album only to be reminded by a ping. I like songs with music. I get it’s its own thing but not really worthy of this list in my opinion.
Great.... More ambient alien sex music. This is not music as far as I can tell. My first thought was that it sounded like video game loading screen music, and turns out it is! These guys scored the music for GTA 5. This garbage has no place on any greatest albums list. Reminds me a lot of Jean-Michel Jarre. The album generator wanted me to listen to the deluxe edition of this album, but fuck that. Like hell I'm subjecting myself to an extra almost 2 hrs of this shit. I'd rather listen to owls fuck. Favourite song: Sequent C, simply because it is the shortest song on this shitty record. Least favourite songs: All of it. No redeeming qualities. Utter trash. A waste of 38 minutes of my life. 1/5
Weird.
Just not my thing. I like words or at least melodies.
vague german electronica that doesnt go anywhere or ever peak
not for me
Like ambient music from a 90's video game. Not something to sit and listen to unless you like being bored out off your mind.
Sem graça demais.
wtf
Dated sounding
Noise, calm noise, but just noise
Tangerine Dream put me to sleep with this album. The opening to Phaedra sounds like white noise I might play in the background after shutting down for the night. Then we move into what sounds like background music for the dramatic moment of a sci fi film. I’m tapping out before my head hits my desk in the middle of the workday.
Lots of mellow. Maybe I just needed something a little more snappy this morning.
Klassisesti koulutettuja muusikkoja, uskoisin. Noh, jos se sopii tekosyyksi sille, ettei jaksa säveltää mitään.
Thank goodness Spotify only has part of the album. Every song feels like an intro to a song but then it’s the whole song
I didn't get anything out of this
It does not help at all that the only version I have access to is the two hour thirty five minute version on youtube music. ugh. ugh. ugh.
Poco relevante. Música relajante, sin ninguna excentricidad. No es un disco en absoluto imprescindible. Solo había 2 cortes (de 4) disponibles en Spotify
Odd
Once i encounter insomnia, i will remember this one exists
Too much dread for my liking
Wow. What a trip. Someone was on drugs when they made this. While I generally love albums that kind of tell a story... this is very... no
wtf is this
Mijn hemel, wat een verschrikkelijke zweefmuziek
"Leuk zeg! Ik heb allemaal apparaten en kabeltjes en samplers en vervormers en dan ga ik 2 uur en 35 minuten aan honderden knopjes draaien zodat er een deken van bliepjes en blopjes en suizende geluiden ontstaat! Ik ben zo baanbrekend! Ik ben een genie!" Nope, was maar slager geworden, of hondentrimmer, dan had de mensheid nog iets aan je inzet gehad, Tangarine Dream.
Nee.
Someone got a synthesiser for Christmas that year. This might make an okay film soundtrack, but this all sounds rather overblown to me and didn't really draw me in and make me want to listen closely.
No. No. No
This album can kiss my whole ass. It's not music, it's just electronic sounds. This isn't even pioneering... it's literally just sounds. I'd say that this is the equivalent of splattering paint on a canvas and hanging it up on a modern art museum and calling it art. 1/10.
"Dad, was that your album of the day?" "...I don't know" Seriously though, what the hell is this? It's not relaxing, nor exciting, nor remarkable to my ears in any way. When would you listen to this? Why would you listen to this? It's just there: a'bleepin' and a'bloopin' and occasionally making sounds that I've heard come out of my dryer. This seems like something for the snobby, avant garde crowd who will sneer at a normie like me for not appreciating it. They can have it.
Ah yes, the visionary songwriting of the Ford assembly line 1
Probably cutting edge in 70s but nothing there now.
Not sure what I just listened to, but maybe drugs would help?
So boring
I hated this a lot. Made me feel anxious. Just bad.
Nah. Starting off with a 17 minute electronic track isn't going to do it for me.
Not sure what that was.... Not for me Would not attempt again. 0
1 Beep beep boop boop beep beep boop boop. This is like Pink Floyd but if every song they wrote was like "On the Run". On the Run works within the confines of Dark Side. On the Run does not work for me as a 37 minute standalone album. I can see how this could could be majorly influential for the genre of electronica in the years ahead, but truthfully, it's never been a genre I've been particularly fond of. I feel like it just kinda stresses me out and like I need to be on some kind of drug to get it. I don't get this album, and it kind of stressed me out. Especially whatever that screeching noise was near the end of Phaedra... egh. Unrelated to my review, I learned Tangerine Dream did the scoring to Grand Theft Auto V and that stuff was pretty cool.
Style over substance. I was waiting over the whole album duration for something to happen... Anything. Instead, I was given the middle part of 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd, but without the essence or culmination in Gilmour and Wright's vocals. It feels like I'm massively missing a context to those songs, that would allow me to enjoy the melodies and noises without being too sceptical or unsure of what I'm listening to. This album is on the list probably because of its innovative approach and use of never before used equipment to generate music. But in my opinion, does it pass the test of time? No.
Random noises, may be good for a sound track, but not an album I'm expected to listen to.
Mum! I got a new synth! Listen to all the noises it can make!
Ai saatana! Paskuuden kuninkuusluokkaan aivan heittämällä ilman kahta ajatusta. Voi juma....
Ei pysty
Sadly, I can't choose zero.
nope
Eh. Ambient music has it's place but it's not for me.
Yeah, props for using Moog stuff innovatively, but I’ve never been into ambient music, much less proto-ambient music.
Ambient Noise... but bad...
Ugh - was never interested in these guys. If this is their best work, then good luck to their legions of fans. I need beat and a melody in order to elevate music above being wallpaper
Nonsense
Ambient
Boring
just instrumental
What a week, two albums that I can't find on apple music. All of their discography is there except this one.
I'm still not particularly a fan of electronic albums with no semblance of melodies. It really isn't contemporary music in any form and I'm afraid that's not for me.
Oh goodie, another one for the rubbish bin! I can't stand this experimental electronic crap.
Too weird for me.
boring
1/5 not at all
Nope
bunu bir daha dinlemek yerine kendimi camdan asagi atmayi tercih ederim
Not feeling this at all, think it needs a certain headspace and I ain't there. 1/5
Fad. Furchtbar langweilige sphärische Klänge
I did not like this.
This was a turd. No matter how experimental of groundbreaking, it is shit.
sum kinda bullshid
yea, this was pretty bad
Wasn't terrible to listen to, but really isn't music either? Just 40 minutes of nice noises. At one point there was a quick bit of upbeat music that had me excited for a change of pace but turns out that it was a YouTube ad... Best part of the experience.
Not into it
Nota:2/10
Sounded like a jungle noises sleep machine. Had to turn it off.
It's difficult to comment on something that sent me to sleep on the first track. This album is very relaxing, even when you don't really want to relax. Forced relaxation is quite annoying.
great for falling asleep
weird
Bruh
What. A short instrumental synth album.
Juste trop space et minimaliste pour moi. Je comprends qu'en 1975 les synths c'étaient malade, mais là c'est trop.
self indulgent pish
i mean we all already know why this album is deeply sentimental to me
