Reviews (page 6 of 7)
This album is really fucking triggering my anxiety, though i don't know if that's unrelated. I don't know why, oxygene is really calming, but this just isn't. i want to like it, but it's just not for me i guess.
Not my thing. Only instrumental ambient music does need a bit of guidance in my honest opinion.
Very nice stuff that knows when not to overstay its welcome. It has run out of tricks by the second half though
p323. 1974. 2 stars. I can see why it was influential, but electronic hippy noodling with 17+ minute tracks tend to leave me cold.
Its good for an ambient background music, but hard to listen with full attention to the music. I imagine that it was quite innovative at the time - a space-rock trip - however I feel that Phaedra has not aged very well
Sounded like when you press your finger down on the forward button to skip to a different part of a song. Or like someone was trying to record the sound of a bong but there was feedback from the microphone.
I liked Movements Of A Visionary a lot
More like Strange Dream- Where I was stuck orbiting the earth in a holding pattern for a long time waiting for something to happen. Some of this is similar to some of the experimentation Pink Floyd was doing at the time. The fact that they are credited with movie scores makes complete sense.
Listening to this I was the protagonist in an indie Euro film only to realize it was just a dream. And just like a dream, it was soothing yet utterly forgettable.
Thought the first track was alright even though it clocked in at 16 mins. Rest of the album was kinda meh. I’m rounding up my rating cuz apparently it is an influential album in the world of electronic music. Cool. 2.5/5
This is music for exploring outer space. I am not exploring space. I have no desire to do so. This music isn't really for me. But if I was exploring space this music would be perfect.
Too much with the drugs
Not for me
I’ve heard of Tangerine Dream but only through a Tenacious D bonus track. This mention in City Hall of the D had me expecting a rock band, but it’s actually very far from this. It felt like the most ambient album I’ve ever heard, despite previously hearing an album specifically intended to be listened to while waiting around in airports. For my taste, this was just a little too off the wall for me. It’d be stretching it to say I enjoyed this, so I shan’t.
It’s.. interesting. I dunno if I like it but it’s certainly different from the albums I’ve been getting on here. Synthy. Almost new age-y.
Atmospheric & extraterrestrial vibes. Made for an interesting commute. Not much in the way of interesting melodies or rhythms. Ultimately unmemorable.
IMAX movie at science museum/Miami Vice from the 80s
Tangerine fart
Electronic sound effects. Not for me
Strange and kind of trippy. Not really sure how to describe it - I had no idea there was electronic music in the 70s? Certainly more interesting than modern EDM. An experience, though I'm not quite sure what kind
Honestly, a 1 wouldn't be an inappropriate rating either. It's just ambient music, which I think should exist, for times when you're floating through the cosmos (although personally I would still prefer Bowie or something). However, it shouldn't exist within a list of "must listen albums". However, I'm refraining from the 1 bc that is a rating reserved for the albums that are literally suffering to finish. This one finished and restarted without me realizing any songs had actually switched.
I dont like this type of music.
This music is perfect for astronauts who have come untethered on a space walk and are endlessly adrift in space. Luckily, I am not an astronaut so 2 stars or D for me.
"Imagine one instant of a song expanded to be the size of the universe" - Gabe Lewis Absolut nicht meine Musik - 2 Sterne
not sure I get this one. A little too cinematic without the cinema.
Absolutely fine in the background, though some parts were a little irritating
It's 2000 and I'm sitting in the planetarium at my high school trying to not to fall asleep. This is blasting over the speakers while my teacher is talking about some galaxy.
Very interesting! SW remixed album so it surely must be good Ok it turns out to be quite dull... I can't sit through 17 minutes of electronic. It's not ambient per se but it's not interesting enough. Not much direction. I think I 'd get it if I sat through it a few times in a row but not enough time to do that so this is my first impression!
As someone who enjoys burbly synths, dark ambience, and even the bits of Tangerine Dream I'd previously heard, I was really expecting to enjoy this a lot, but it just left me a bit cold? Like, the last two tracks were good, but there was a whole lot of thinking "is this still going, and do I care" getting to that point.
I respect it, but man these songs just didn't really engage me at all.
This album is a mood but I don’t see myself going back to it.
I have no idea. I did not find it comfortable or pleasant, it’s obviously inventive but I don’t think I want to ever hear it again, not what I want from music in any shape or form. 2 star. For the inventiveness.
Atmosfericna trip elektronika. Zanimljivo na prvu, no postane zamorno kasnije, ponavljaju se slicni obrasci. Fav tracks: Phaedra 4/10 = 2+
Nothing happens. All build-up and no payoff. I'm sure it was revolutionary when it came out, but even back then there were better examples of electronic music (namely Kraftwerk).
Album 662 of 1001 Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (1974) Rating : 1.5 / 5\ Early Electronica. Maybe as a tool to help you go to sleep. It works as that.
More spaced out than a journey to the next galaxy. Three discs was probably too much for me though
Well okay. This was odd. Am I like being abducted my aliens? Am I in alien? Like I just don’t really get why such a specific thing is on the list amongst so many more influential things. I think +1 because it’s SO weird and SO different, but just eh.
not really my thing- i do like electronic music sometimes but this was never fully catchy or active enough to be good dance/rave music, nor was it ever fully ambient enough to be relaxing or meditative. i can appreciate the effort and the artistry that went into it though, and i can see why it's considered important in the history and development of electronic music
I typically like this ambient, background music. Coming from 1974, this is pioneering.. However, I had to chase songs (not everything was on Spotify), which severely limits accessibility for me, and usually comes with a dock in stars. That said, once I was able to listen to the whole thing, the sound is spacious but empty. There’s atmosphere, but not much else. It’s hard to stay interested when so little seems to happen. Just drifts too far off.
I get the historical importance of this work but I don’t think I’d ever want to listen to it again.
I respect what this record meant to the electronic genre, but it just was not my cup of tea. There are some interesting synth lines here, but the songs are far too long and unchanging.
Not good.
This isn’t hurting anyone, but it’s not adding much for me either. Kind of seems like Pink Floyd without the fun parts. I appreciate the word of mouth nature of the success of the album, but I’m all set after that.
2 star cavalcade continues
All of the tracks were so mellow, I can appreciate the vibe, but generally didn't enjoy engaged listening.
It's nice, very mid. I guess I just don't understand the use case for this type of music other than overly dramatic movie soundtracks.
ugh why did people do this??
It’s a very long Stranger Things intro. I enjoy hearing the pioneers of the electronica genre, but I can’t see myself revisiting something like this. Unless maybe I’m under the influence of something…
I don't like space. Always get this uneasy feeling whenever I see a universe zoom out video. Devoids me of any sense of meaning. "I'm so insignificant, yet I'm all I have" kind of feeling This is (bad) good music, it makes me feel (bad), makes me imagine (bad) things. If only I liked space What do you even do in space, get hit by an asteroid?
long
Should relisten. More than ambient, but not much, with lots of delayed arpeggios and reverb
Good electronic band. Good music, enjoyable to listen to.
I really wanted to like this but the cacophony just made me feel anxious. 2.0
Would’ve liked it better as a video game soundtrack or something…kinda boring to listen to by itself, but would have been cool as background music
Just put it on and don’t pay attention
i could see myself enjoying this in limited bursts, but ambient/electronic will never be my cup of tea
This a scifi horror movie soundtrack tf? not bad tho just will never listen to it ever
I was hopeful but it just didn’t quite do it for me. 2
I only got to listen to the last 2 songs but I’m glad I didn’t hear the rest, I don’t care for instrumentals.
ALIENS😩
When I think of Tangerine Dream I think of Tom Cruise. That is because they did some of the music for Risky Business. Listening to this I only imagine it playing during a movie……in the background. It’s cool music but not something I would seek out or jam to. I like Vangelis better than this, but I appreciate the ground they broke.
Perfectly fine background music and is perfect for the Brighton ambient scene. Not something I can easily vibe off
Overall found this boring. Really not my kind of thing. Occassionally I thought 'oh something interesting happened then' but that was rare.
Is this why Germans like Hasslehoff so much? Because their music sounds like the Night Rider theme? This album is good I guess if you listen to it as an demo showcasing that you can do scores.
Bored me to tears
Is it music? I don't know? Do I like it? I don't know? Where am I anyway?
Yes... I mean... No... Though I can agree with the viewpoints of many; stating this is the birth of EDM, that for the period when this was conceived it was groundbreaking, or that the group has created such a massive catalogue of music that it is impossible to overlook them. And yet, after listening... nay, after subjecting myself to this modern version of water-torture, I can but say that I am not a fan. 2** stars, as I'd rather listen to this for the rest of my life than several of the abject crap that I have labelled 1*
something like explosions in the sky, but not something I would actively return to.
Nothing special, maybe I need to relisten
I can see why this album is considered important and I was surprised by the release date as it does sound ahead of its time. However, as I listened I found it slipping into the background often. The title track was my favourite - you could almost draw a direct line from it to 80s synth pop. I think I need time to let this album grow on me but for now I will not be revisiting- although I can imagine other dimensions being unlocked in the barn while under the influence…
I personally believe that I could have died without listening to this one
This sounded like some video game music. Some of it was cool, but it was very long and got a bit boring.
Meh
I couldn't finish this. Clever arrangements but wouldn't come back to it
This might be groundbreaking. I just got bored.
Not today, and probably not tomorrow either.
dark and ethereal ambient instrumental music. it would be interesting if incorporated into a movie score, but by itself, it’s pretty boring, honestly.
electronic, 1974 -> 2
2/3
Hard listen this. Not my cup of tea.
Maybe music to fall asleep to? Boring.
I didn't care for it
Haunting in a scary way
Of its time
This sounded like horror movie ambience. Not much to say. 1.5
Recognize the influence and innovation, but just not my kind of thing for casual listening.
For the early 70's this electronic music was doing something alright, not really my vibe though
Don't like that much. It's better Vangelis or Jean Michel Jarre.
Was aware of band but thought they were a jazz/new age category. So the electronic music surprised me and not a good one.
First song has a lot of annoying ASMR. Might be better on headphones? Ok. I did not realize that this was just two songs in ten minutes. I was really enjoying song three, only to find it was an entirely different band.
"Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream is a pioneering electronic music album that helped shape the genre. Released in 1974, it features a mesmerizing blend of ambient textures, hypnotic rhythms, and innovative soundscapes. While "Phaedra" is undoubtedly influential, its repetitive nature and lack of dynamic variation may not appeal to all listeners. The album's long, meandering tracks can feel directionless at times, making it a challenging listen for those seeking more conventional song structures. Despite its shortcomings, "Phaedra" remains a significant album in the history of electronic music, showcasing Tangerine Dream's innovative approach to sound. It receives a 2 out of 5 rating for its historical importance and experimental nature, but its limited accessibility may limit its appeal to a broader audience.
It was ok. Kinda sounded like a demo of synthesizer sounds
I mean, I like the 80s. And I like movies from the 80s. But that doesnt mean I want to hear an album of music from 80s movies. Why in the world would anyone say to anyone else, "oh man youve got to hear this album" about THIS album? Like, not the worst thing Ive heard on this list, but still highly questionable. 2/5
I don’t think this was produced by humans. It’s well produced but how far can you go with space and laser sound effects really. Favorite: Least favorite: all of them 2.8/5
Just not my thing. Pretty forgettable
Eh, the only times this album struck me was when it was very discordant and anxiety-inducing. Probably won't listen to this one again.
I thought I was finally going to get another good electronic album. But no. This wasn’t offensively awful like some others I’ve heard, but it was just so boring to listen to. Very atmospheric, which is nice I guess, but it’s too much. And not enough at the same time. No electronic album I’ve heard here has yet surpassed Cross. I wonder if any ever will. 5/10 Top 1: 1. Phaedra
I mean, it was kinda cool. I still think most of this type of electronic instrumental music just sounds like a PS2 selection screen for a sports game. The first one did feel like flying through space rather than floating. Kinda neat
Ok - but there are better stuff from Tangerine Dream
Interesting kind of ethereal/outer space/time travel music. Maybe there's something there? Maybe a different album?
Only two songs on Spotify so didn’t hear much but liked what I heard
This one is interesting. Didnt listen to the whole thing, but seems entirely instrumental, no vocals, almost the early innings of electronic music. Certain parts made me think of Tool and some of their elongated, instrument-only sections. I appreciate what this is, especially given the release year, but overall not interested in hearing more.
Day80 - sounds like the background music at a wellness store
Nearly 18 minute title/opening track, and the enhanced edition of the album is nearly 3 hours. While that track was busy ruminating I was surprised to see it's 50 years old with that kind of spacey sound. Then I heard almost a Pac-Man like noise and realized they had some electronics back then too. I can't imagine the amount of people that probably freaked out during a trip while listening to this as it does build up some anxiety. The rest of the album kind of has this same feel so it wouldn't work as a background noise album to fall asleep to. I checked on the mythology of Phaedra to see if that gave any clues to why it has this feel, and that's more of a Jerry Springer story than anything else. At any rate, my favorite thing about it he album was that it came out 50+ years ago, so I'll give it an extra star for that. No real favorite track as they all are super long and similar. 2/5
I try to listen in relationship to when albums originally came out sometimes. When this came out in 1975 synthesizers were relatively new to rock music. So maybe this was groundbreaking then, but now it just sounds uninspiring or original. Maybe it just hasn’t aged well.
This album wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t good either. They produced a variety of interesting ambient sounds mixed together well, but they didn’t take the mixes anywhere. I was bored after about five minutes. This would probably work well as the sound track for an astronomy documentary. I don’t see myself ever seeking this out to listen again…not unless I’m smoking a joint and looking at the stars.
I can understand and see why this album was so influential for electronic music. I can imagine this album and albums like this were a huge influence for works like Daft Punk's Tron Legacy soundtrack. But again, this particular album is a prototypal sound that is relevant to music history, but isn't all that enjoyable to actually listen to.
You wait months for an experminental German album to come along, then boom 3 in four days. This one was a bit of a bore-fest, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Background noise. Literally. How do you score that?
Couldn’t make it all the way through. Darn it. Maybe another day
Pioneering music
2.5
Giving this a 2 only because it came out in 1974, so historical relevance and all that.
* When I saw the album was only four songs, I was pretty surprised and very relieved as well not having a whole lot of songs to rank. Then I saw how much time it would take to finish the album and how long the songs were... had a wtf moment. Still should be a good bit easier not having a dozen songs to figure out their placement amongst each other. * Only about 2 minutes into the first track but it's a very sci-fi-esque number. Quite ear piercing at times to say the least. * I'll give it this, it's a very atmospheric album. * I didn't hate it... the fact an instrumental only album isn't a one star is miraculous. Leaning towards two stars but part of me wants to place it in the three star category because it was decently calming background music. But I don't think it's something I'd intentionally look for were it not my daily album. Hmm... -- Album Rankings -- 1. Movements of a Visionary 2. Sequent C 3. Phaedra 4. Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares
Super weird atmospheric music. I'd heard about this group on the Prog subreddit but it didn't really feel like prog, more like ambient or electronic - no rock instrumentation. Like Marconi Union.
Not my style.
Appreciate the work but it’s not for me.
This wasn’t my style but I also listened to the revisited version so maybe that is why
Definitely ahead of its time... but not particularly good as a listen now. 2 stars
Not completely terrible but don't understand the appeal. Ethereal. Good yoga music probably.
Only reason I'm not giving this a 1 is because it would sound alright if you slapped a 140bpm beat over the top of it and called it euphoric trance. Without that, it's just Ross Geller playing the keyboard to everyone in Central Perk.
I actually rather liked this this morning (I think it's good for a sleep-deprived brain!). Not loads going on, but a really nice, dreamy soundscape with pretty strong dollops of sci-fi synths. Would not have said this was from the early seventies without checking. That said, once you've listened to it for about 5 minutes then you don't get much more out of it really. If we combine that with it not being properly on Spotify, then it probably relegates it to a high 2.
I swear I tried. Tried to appreciate the significance of it, the groundbreaking nature, but I was switching between being bored and anxious. It’s probably good background music for some documentaries about space, but other than that it’s just bloopadedoop for me.
A bit dull…
Generic sound space soundscaping, probably revolutionary at the time.
Not much interest here.
Too much ethereal bleeping and wavy phasing for this listener. Perhaps if I was on the moon.
2.0 per track.
Ugh. This is so pointless. I mean, the PRODUCTION is neat but the final PRODUCT is... just pointless. I want to fail it for wasting my time but I just can't, in good conscience, do so because the production is unique. Not good, mind you. Just unique.
This sounded like background music at a science center documentary. It was a little too abstract to be interesting.
Maybe if I was writing a sci-fi novel, this might make some interesting inspirational background music. But, on it's own it plays more like an interesting experiment than actual music.
I think it's possible for music to be groundbreaking AND fun (see 'Blue Monday' by New Order). This was just self-indulgent space noise better suited to a Kubrick soundtrack.
I’m sure this is good for fans of the genre but not for me.
Two of the songs were unavailable on Spotify and I didn’t really like the two that were available
This seems more apt for a yoga class than sit down listening. Made it all the way through so it will get a 2.
Enough: wtf was this? It was some weird depressive soundscape. Legit could hear the same level of music on any music youtube 24/7 livestream with 20 viewers. So incredibly mid and unremarkable. No thanks.
like a strange German waiting room
I don’t get it
This album sounded to me like a synthesizer in store demo mode. I realize that's likely ignoring the historical significance, and that in 1974 these sounds and style may have been groundbreaking, but it just came off as very vanilla electronic music.
Ugh! Spacey shit but boring.
an album with only four songs? i am intrigued third one sounds like a submarine i had no particular feelings it was just noise - good for study
For what it is, it's fine, but this sure felt longer than 38 minutes. Kinda liked the first track, kinda bored by the rest.
unfortunately i was not able to listen to the full album on apple music but i did listen to the first song. i can appreciate this for being groundbreaking and ahead of its time but.... i did not like it lol
Nope
Weird and atmospheric but ultimately a bit much for me
This band was obviously very prominent and influential in the electronic and ambient music scene. Those types of music aren't something I'd generally listen to on a regular basis. I thought this record was a bit boring and minimal, but I guess that's the point. I am glad I listened to it though, definitely worth including on this list.
cool origins of edm but too weird
Well, only part of the album was available on Spotify, but what I could listen to sounded like what would be playing when you’re walking through one of those airport tunnels with the trippy lights.
Nice work, generator. Contemporary reviews on the wiki for yesterday’s Jean-Michel Jarre album compared it (unfavourably) to Tangerine Dream, so now’s a good time for me to decide for myself. I found Phaedra to be more symphonic (less poppy), perhaps more sophisticated, certainly more eerie, and undeniably earlier to the party than Oxygène. But as good? Not for me. Feels like something that’d work well as a soundtrack but it's not very enjoyable to listen to on its own. It gets a 2nd star for pushing/smashing through some of the musical boundaries of its time.
At times unsettling and other times just fades away into the background, fades so far I forgot I was listening to anything. I can't really grasp this - undoubtedly a fascinating audio experiment and something that surely broke new ground - but an album to return to? I will pass.
Ten times better than whatever random noises aphex twin is putting together and calling music, which, unfortunately, still makes it experimental stuff not for me.
What is this? Some sort of a progressive-electronic-ambient album?
This sounds like it could have been the soundtrack to a trippy '70s sci-fi movie, or a more recent film with a retro vibe, like "Beyond the Black Rainbow." It's not something I'd generally listen to, but I imagine it'd be quite the experience after taking some psychedelics. 2.5 stars.
no words, very long songs
An impressive early influence to all sorts of modern electronic music, the German scene in the late 60's and 70's was awash with Discotheques ready to nurture this kind of music. The greater use of synthesizers and sequencers will go on to shape an entire genre. Ultimately though, it fell a bit flat to me. Though wildly influential this is not something I would put on for myself. I'm glad I checked the track listing online and only listened to the proper album and not the two hours of bonus content
Inclasificable
Pretty mild. (38%)
I'm sure this was revolutionary when it came out, but feels excessive and indulgent now.
This didn’t do much for me at all, can see it would be influential given the year it came out, but not one I’ll come back to
Kuulostaa ikäistään uudemmalta, vaikka toki menee vuosisadan puolivälin klassisen musiikin vanavedessä eikä siinä mielessä tuo uutta kuin ns. popiin. Lähinnä unettaa
only 2 songs on spotify
OK, Wikipedia tells me this album was historically important. I accept that, even if I've never heard of it before. Regardless of history, today I found this an album about nothing. But unlike Seinfeld, which is excellent through and through, this music is going nowhere.
A technological breakthrough in musical history, but kind of boring to listen to.
weird spacial music
I'm sure it's historically important but it didn't seem that compelling to me. I was really into 'ambient' music in the early 2000s - I can see some of the lineage. 2 stars because I didn't have to turn it off and I was able to listen to it multiple times.
its just ambient, nothing more. Still better than the albums I gave one star
Ok, I appreciate the ambient trailblazing going on here, but this is not my bag.
This would probably be a vibe if I was high. In fact, I feel like I'm getting kind of a contact high from listening alone, which is admittedly pretty cool. However, with all my wits about me, this sounds like little more than movie sound effects pieced together into songs.
2.5/5 Ok.
This could be the Oscar nominated soundtrack from Dances With Whales. It stars Kevin Costner as an irascible, old, ship captain who sails the world aimlessly while seeking meaning for his life through the song of the sea. Spoiler alert. Much like this album, that meaning is nowhere to be found.
2. I didn't enjoy this. perhaps not in the mood. It reminded me of a movie soundtrack and something bad was about to happen. Probably wouldn't listen again and wouldn't buy.
Heel erg rustig en zweverig. Moet wel oké zijn in de juiste sfeer. Maar ik voel het toch niet direct
Yes ok I can see how this is incredibly influential and all that but no matter how much I listen I can't get this - great textures but much less in the way of actual tunes.
This gives me anxiety.
Fluffy Fluid Ambient Experiment that just wants too much to teach you how great Instruments can imitate the sounds of nature. 2.4
If you’ve never played a video game before and were curious what the music that’s played while you wait to start sounds like, you could listen to this.
Ambient.
4/10 gave me the heebie jeebies.
Heard of this group, didn't realize they made 100 albums or scored GTA5 (sick). Weird alien space electronic music. Mostly calming but sometimes spooky. Sounds like it could be the score for a 80s sci-fi film.. I believe this sounds ahead of it's time, but not really for me. 2.5/5
The very essence of "in one ear and out the other". None of this was bad, per se, but other than some cool switching between audio sources, there isn't much here.
Not for me.. for its time it must have been revolutionary and inspiring for many artist. Electronic albums like this can’t interest me.
Not offensive but doesn’t spark joy. A lot of it seemed like movie soundtrack music - especially a sci fi movie.
Interesting, didn't really hook me but decent
Psichedelico, ma non per questo bellissimo
Very atmospheric but not particularly interesting
Weird
Important to note that this album would be revolutionary in 1974. Unfortunately I’m not here to rate revolutionary practices (it would be a 4) though it does inform my overall rating. At the end of the day, most of it is down to personal enjoyment. Might not be my thing but might be yours!
Beperkt kunnen luisteren, maar genoeg ok te concluderen dat het weinig boeiend is.
I shit my pants when this album appeared on the 1001 albums generator. I've really got to listen to this? It's WAY out of my comfort zone. My highly refined musical prejudices should make me run a mile from this shit. I needn't have worried. It was the first thing I listened to today. It was the perfect soundtrack for my online catch up as I slowly eased into the morning with endless mugs of hot tea. It got a little Dungeons and Dragons. I came close to bailing. Soundscapes drifted in and out, not quite sufficient to grab my attention, but decent background music all the same. I probably would feel a little different if I wanted a buzzing off yer tits Friday night album.
should play this as background to the lava lamp
If I ever find myself lost in space, floating, completely alone, I imagine this album will somehow be playing.
kind of lackluster. Not memorable
Good electronic ambient, sometimes too stressed to be a calming background
I was listening while I was cleaning the house and sort of kept forgetting I was listening to it. I didn't dislike it, but just sort of meh.
Heard a few tracks, which was enough to appreciate the vibe but recognize it’s not my jam.
Blah.
Startet med at man blir kidnappet av aliens, 12:15 kommer det noen seler og måker. Begynner å føle meg litt paranoid. Tror ikke jeg er kul nok til å høre på dette albumet.
This would be fine as a sound track or music bed but I found it very boring as an album. I honestly didn’t notice when it finished. Probably important and ground breaking but not much fun to listen to.
Not familiar with them. Too ambient for me. Not sure why it's on a 1001 list honestly.
The first 2 tracks of this album weren't available on Spotify so I went and found them on YouTube. Interesting that this is most likely the shortest album on the list so far, and if it isn't then it's definitely the shortest track-amount wise. Nice album overall, gives off classical "new music" vibes to me. Early synth work in this space with lots of repetition for an output that is meditative and reflective. Slightly boring.
A symphony of extremely long noise
Repetitive, instrumental, strange, trippy, evocative, repetitive, weird, lyric-less, bizarre and repetitive.
Rough listen. Reminds me of a music class I took in college that was at time painful!
Not sure if this album has survived time... But has certainly been important for the development of eclectronic music.
Listened to on 9/20/22 2/5 Favorite song: sequent c This electronic album made me feel like I was in a spaceship but verdicts still out on if that’s a good or bad thing
Meh, not for me.
Best Song: Not applicable. Worst Song: Not applicable. Overall: This is ethereal space music. I'm not sure whether it is good ethereal space music, but that is what it is. It feels like music that would be best listened to while absolutely blitzkrieged in a planetarium, but when just sitting at work, staring at spreadsheets, it comes off as a little tedious. Context is key for this one.
This is irritating me profoundly. One or two tracks fine; but a whole album of wishy washy flute tunes is abysmal to experience. Spa music.
Part of me thinks I'll finally quit doing this daily exercise after I score 100 albums with a 5. If I even get to 100. But I still have a lot of Beatles albums to rate, the two Van Halen and Michael Jackson albums I know are getting 5's. I'm currently at 70, and the Fabs, Jacko and VH should push me to 80. That leaves me with 20 surprises, which is what still brings me to this site every day. This is a long way to say that Tangerine Dream does not present a case for being one of those twentysomething surprises.
This album may have established the genres of house and trap. It doesn't do much for me.
Kinda uninspired....
Didn’t strike the right balance of engaging and ambient. May not have been in the right headspace though
Some interesting points, and at times pretty unsettling, but a lot of boring noodling about without really going anywhere. Felt more of a chore than something to enjoy.
Quite dull.
The entire album is ambient music. Unlike with Tubular Bells, I was not familiar with any of the music. It waa alright, but I don't think I will listen to it again.
Fine background noise. Probably won’t revisit.
Geweldige muziek voor in een wonderbaarlijke wereld van de Efteling. Niet zo fijn om dit een heel album te luisteren. Verder niet slecht gedaan.
I’m sure this is a seminal album in the genre and pioneered new techniques, but if you don’t enjoy soundscapes you won’t enjoy this.
I like Can and Kraftwerk and thought this would be a cross between the 2. It's really ambient though and I barely noticed it being on. Disappointing.
I guess this album could be described as peaceful, especially "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares". But think this album would be significantly more interesting if you were high, I'm unlikely to listen to it again.
Spotify cut the first half of the album so not sure if I got the full experience, what I heard was more than enough though.
I don't mind instrumental music, and I don't mind angular, noisy stuff, but the first movement of this really set my expectations low. Rest of it is pleasant-enough background music. Just didn't do much for me. Favorite track: "Mysterious Semblance At the Strand of Nightmares"
More ambient ''music'. It just sounds like somebody mucking about in the BBC Radiophonic workshop. Very nice as background, maybe as a filmscore, but not to be actively listened to.
I mean, great. Someone had to do it I guess. But of the ding dong beep boops to work or study this isn’t the one I’d choose first
Not as weird as I expected, but not exactly gonna listen again. Fav new track: Mysterious Semblance At The Strand Of Nightmares (🙄)
Nope
First listen. I know a lot of people are fans. I'm not getting it yet. Nice music, but nothing special.
After The Lexicon of Love (which has been on constant for more than the day that was allowed), this just feels really boring. I always struggle with music that doesn't go anywhere. It wasn't on iTunes and only the remixed/extended 2 hrs 35 mins version is on Spotify. The first song is more than 17.5 mins. Wikipedia tells me the original album is just the four songs. I'm sure it's important in the development of electronica and ambient music....but 12 mins in to that first song and nothing much has happened. Noodling for stoners
made me anxious
Too much for me
This was the first electronic music album that I'll evaluate with more than 1 star. The first song has a dreamy sensation that is likable, but it's still that kind of European electronic song that's absolutely not my kind of thing.
I searched through my old high school yearbooks but couldn't track down my drug dealer from back in the day. Pity. This album would have been great on acid.
Historically interesting prog-electronica from the 70s when it must have been super uncool. Can't imagine these German guys where rocking at hotel parties with hookers and blow. Still cool to learn about the process and how they made it. Sounds better than much of the electronic music today, but still basically ambient and not quickly fades into the background.
weird foreign concept albums stay weird
Irgendein Melodiegeplänkel dass einen wie einlullt. Sehr speziell und nicht meins.
Decent enough background music.
This album reminds of a soundtrack to some wanky piece of modern/physical theatre that I had to go watch during theatre studies a level. Not as bad as Divine Comedy though.
Had something about it. But a bit of a slog
Meh
Not really my jam.
Almost put me to sleep while driving =(
Electronic Music/Ambient Music. Different. Bit trippy.
This avant garde ambient album is innovative and influential, and should be celebrated for that. It's also mostly unlistenable. It belongs on the Stranger Things soundtrack, but I don't want to hear it otherwise. I did learn the word "krautrock" today, so that's something. Best track: Sequent C
Boring
Going into Phaedra by Tangerine Dream, I’ll be honest and say this is not normally the type of music I would enjoy at all. Long instrumental electronic albums are usually not my thing, and on paper this sounded like exactly the sort of record I tend to struggle with. That said, knowing this was made in 1974 and helped shape electronic music as we know it makes it impossible not to respect. For its time, this sounds incredibly progressive, ambitious and way ahead of the curve, so I was genuinely interested to see what I would make of it. I ended up really enjoying this. It’s the kind of album that works brilliantly in the background — immersive, atmospheric and unlike anything else I’ve heard on the list so far. There’s something hypnotic about it, and once you settle into its rhythm, it becomes a very absorbing listen. One thing worth mentioning is that it was surprisingly difficult to track down, as it wasn’t available on Apple Music or Spotify, so I had to listen to it on YouTube. Despite that extra effort, I’m glad I did, because this is definitely an album I could see myself coming back to. Favourite tracks: “Phaedra” Least favourite tracks: Everything on the album was worth listening to Album artwork: Cool album cover
Oh man, this sucks on a whole other level. 1/10
At what point does music just become a soundscape? As soundscapes go, it's nice enough, but to actually sit down and listen to this? No thanks.
I'm not saying it's bad music, I'm just saying I don't get it.
Unlistenable nonsense
Absolute wank. Sounds like the sounds of a very bad trip
(1/7) ugh
Sounds like the things that I put to sleep on spotify.
Felt very pointless.
Entiendo la importancia, el peso que tuvo en el desarrollo de la música electrónica pero no me gusta la música repetitiva por eso le doy calificación baja
Sounds like a nervous breakdown.
me rescaté de que seguía en el primer tema a los 9 min. Dura 17. Aparte no arrancaba más. Es techno entiendo. Lo saqué
I mean, eh.
This makes me really uncomfortable, I had to skip through for my own good.
felt like i was in a modern art gallery exhib (could only find the last two songs on Spotify and i don't think i want to find the first two)
No.
It’s OK for working, but I don’t really understand what makes this special. It’s very pleasant but
This was work. It might have earned a second star if it was in Swedish. I don't feel like I need to elaborate on that.
Exceptionally long record of noise.
Not a fan. Dentist office music.
inaudible
While impressive that all of this was analog in the 1970’s, I feel like this should’ve stayed in the hotbox studio where it was created. Fave song: none 1/5
No, I don’t like this crap at all -1😂
Elektroninen musiikki ei käy minulle
When it comes to electronic music I like mine to be rhythmic and catchy, especially when combined with the harshness of industrial music. This just feels way too ambient for my tastes, I could not get through all of it. This feels like the backing track to a hawkwind song minus the guitars and drumming
Und wo ist das Lied?
Interesting. I only found the 2010 version and if it is unaltered as far as the music itself then this is absolutely groundbreaking. I still didn’t love it as far as driving around listening to it but as background or film score it’s pretty cool. I’ll do a 3-10, but as always- round down..
Good for sleeping to? Not anything I can really compare to good music.
Kraftwerk and these guys probably had fights in alleys lit by neon signs
Ok??
Shit
Fuck off
Not a lot of fucking good if its not available on apple music. Wankers
malardo
*1973. German electronic... *It's just very long tracks of ambient music/sounds... *This sounded like the background soundtrack music for movie set in Mars... *Maybe this album is more complex and deep than I realize, but I'll not be doing any research or giving it any more listens to find out. RATING - 3.5/10
Trash.
Oops all noise (sorry to the Germans)
I hated this. Just boring noise
meh
Yeah, ambiance as an album is neat, but not something I really want personally. Acid trip type noise is all right but not for me.
I’ll be totally honest, I hated this. It’s not garbage, it’s not so bad that I didn’t understand why it was on the list like other albums I’ve given a one to before, I can see the obvious talent and work that went into this album. This is sort of embarrassing to admit but this album legitimately gave me uncomfortable anxiety that just kept digging in deeper. It was incredibly unpleasant and I really hated getting through this album. I tried to give it a few extra chances but each time I hated equally as much as the last. Kinda confused about this one cause I’m usually naturally into crazy electronic music.
Absolutely not what I wanted for my cycle to work
Just not for me, I can kinda get why it’s hear but just not my music End of the first track sounds like a lore accurate cover of what does the fox say 1.5
Not my thing
This was a struggle. I wanted to like it but every song felt unbearably long, and aside from some moments in the first 17 minute track, nothing stood out. Even for background music this was forgettable.
Ikke tilgængelig på Spotify - Ambient spild af tid. Lyt til alt andet istedet.
Ligegyldig elektro uden melodi eller rytme
v ambient. could imagine this playing at a space themed aquarium for bioluminescent marine life
tiene literalmente 2 (dos) temas brother. que vergas estoy escuchando
Awful. Hated it. Just noises.
I didn't like it...
No words for how little I enjoyed this
