Wow this is really rad. The lyrics are witty and referential, and instrumentally it's catchy as heck. If britpop was more like this I would've definitely been a fan.

It’s quite good, like a cynical and more guitar heavy Divine Comedy. I can see how it snuck in at the start of “Brit-Pop” and has aged better.

For being pop rock from 1993, IMHO it sounds a bit ahead of its time. At times it sounded pretty 90s, but overall I thought it had a fresh sound. More of a 3.5.

Surely the lead singer is holding his nose while he sings. This is a truly annoying piece of crap.

It’s really decent, some reviews I’ve seen seem to make them victims of the “uurrrgh I hate britpop” crowd. Which I can get to some extent but this book is partly about discovery and this is a band I’ve never heard before. The album inhabits the more smiths inspired suede/gene route which is one of the better ways to go for britpop. Very solid 4/5.

I didn't hate this. I didn't love it. Not much stood out for me.

Something about the mix of the music and the lead vocals did not fit well for me. At first I thought it was just okay, but as it played on it really started to irritate me. I appreciated the last track mostly because it marked the end.

I did not connect with this at all. They get a 2 instead of a 1 because of the cello and glockenspiel.

The lyrics are interesting and often odd and the music is of the rambly-catchy-british sort. Wasn’t quite what I expected from something called “New Wave” and not everything held my attention but I was left liking it.

I was hoping for more from this album, but it rarely strayed from competent. The peaks weren't very high and there is considerable filler.

The soft vocal sound does not work for me here, with really dull songwriting. Most of the song intros just make me want to turn them off, with repetitive chords and strumming and beats.

Somehow I've managed to not know about this band but half way through the first song I'm loving it... although I've definitely heard this song before. I'm hearing Blur pretty strongly in here. Looking at it, it's the same year as Modern Life, makes sense. Problem is the album quickly settles into Britpop mediocrity. It's OK but it feels quite by-the-numbers. I was looking forward to later tracks because other reviews called up some of those as great tracks but they didn't break through the tedium to me. By the end of the album I just wanted it to be over. Yawn!

This album was pleasant, and had a strong sense of melody, but was rather bland. It sounded like a more watered down new wave trending towards a Britpop like sensibility. The Beatles are obviously a huge influence on this band, and they have almost a twee folk like aspect to them, but they don’t have the charm to pull it off.

Feels like I’ve been transported to an alternate universe where I like The Smiths. This LP definitely stands in the shadow of Morissey and co. vocally, but carves its own unique niche with some biting post-punk guitar and simple yet delightfully odd arrangements. Didn’t like every track on here (the slow ones especially veer far too close back to the source material), but enjoyed hearing something a bit old and a bit new to break up the Brit pop monotony.

I liked the opening song. After that a lot of it all felt quite soft, generic indie that didn't really grab me. He's got quite a weak singing style that doesn't work for me. Maybe it'd be improved with a more dynamic or interesting singing style? 2.5/5 rounded down.

I started listening to this with some strong reservations, as someone who generally finds 'Britpop' to be an odious genre with very little redeeming qualities (I am seriously not looking forward to listening to the Blur records on this list). But after a few tracks I started to lighten up a bit as I realized this had more in common with the Pulp side of Britpop (aka: the good stuff) and if anything sounded more like Jangle Pop to me. From what I can tell this band just got sort of thrown into the Britpop scene because of their proximity to all the other big originators of that sound, which definitely makes more sense than someone classifying them as such based on their sound. One of the more appealing aspects of this record is certainly the lyrics, blending some impressively acerbic wit with an enjoyable amount of literary pretension. Everything I've read about this band's frontman points to him being a Grade-A twat, and honestly that feels like the kind of person you'd need to write lyrics this entertaining. At no point do these pretensions become pretentious however, combined with some memorable and catchy hooks that I'm always looking for in music like this. The opening track 'Show Girl demonstrates this very well, a fantastic opener that immediately grabs your attention and the rest of the album refuses to let up with nary a dull or uninteresting track. Another highlight is Idiot Brother with its sneering guitars and equally sneering lyrics. Definitely a great record, although I'm not entirely sure if I would have picked it for this list considering some of the snubs it managed to get in over. Although considering I almost certainly wouldn't have checked this out without it being on the list, it seems foolish of me to look this gift horse in the mouth. Highlights: Show Girl, Junk Shop Clothes, Starstruck, Valet Parking, Idiot Brother

yet another thoroughly unremarkable album. Is the author of the book friends with these guys or something? This album wasn't bad. It just wasn't even close to "you must listen to it before you die".

Loved this album.

A tasteful collection of so many British sounds is a pleasant companion, but the Auteurs run out of time to make an original mark. My own biases make me guilty putting this on either side of the centerline. It was fun enough to pick out the voices I could.

Maybe I was just relieved after listening to pantera but I’ll be generous and go with a 4 here. Solid Brit pop.

2.5 stars. Pretty boring, uninspired alt rock. Singer fairly monotone, drum beats really simplistic. Standout is the more lively "Early Years" and the hidden track at the end was pretty good.

Unfortunately lumped in with the Britpop umbrella which the leader Luke Haines hated. Its likeable song driven guitar pop/rock that lost its way at the time. The bits of cello are nice. It kinda washes over me a bit but otherwise its all tickety boo.

73/100: This was a nice indie rock album, but "nice" is the most impassioned I'll get about this album. If this album were a Pokemon, it would evolve into "AM" by the Arctic Monkeys. That's not to say this album is a Magikarp and "AM" is a Gyrados, more like this album is a Charmander. It's a good ("nice") album just like Charmander is nice, but upon inspection, it's really clear that they haven't reached the ceiling of what this type of sound can achieve like other similar artists have. I might be interested to explore some of their other stuff to see if it gets better, but I doubt I'll find myself listening to this specific album again in the future.

Great, an Indie album from the 90s. Its only benefit is that is less than 45 minutes long. It has the whiny annoying singer, bad lyrics, and the music itself is meh. It is not the worst album on the list but it is not a 2. I will round down.

This sounds nothing like Suede or Richey era Manic Street Preachers. The other reviews and Spotify description got me excited for nothing. It's just some completely unremarkable and boring britpop record with the most unenthusiastic singer I've ever heard. Doesn't hold a candle to Brett Anderson's vocals.

Good album! I enjoyed this one! The lyrics were a bit, sketchy. But the singer had a good voice, good instrumentation. The lyrics are the only let down. Overall, a really solid album.

Never heard of this group, though I do recall this being an album that a number of people on the subreddit agreed was a great unknown find from this list. I, uh, well it's not doing all that much for me. Certainly not bad, just another indie alt, new wave type of album, pretty much what the title suggests. Not technically new wave since it's '90s but not worth getting into the semantics. A couple songs I dug but overall it's just okay. Favorite tracks: Show Girl, How Could I Be Wrong, Idiot Brother. Album art: I do like this cover, a mysterious man in some sort of makeshift head covering. The black and white works well here with the bordering. 3/5

Thought this a was really solid 90s alt rock album. Felt like they had an arctic monkeys and alternative 90s Brit rock style combined. The guitar riffs were solid and the singer does a good job. The drums were pretty solid too which is something I don’t always notice in albums. Would listen to some of it again. 6.9/10

This is a pleasant enough to listen to album of Britpop. I initially was a bit underwhelmed, but as the album progresses I think the songs improve. Top notch Britpop. If one likes guitar driven anthemic rock, one could do worse than The Auteurs. Blur and Oasis received a lot of the press in the US, but The Auteurs delivered a solid debut. Luke Haines may or may not have "created" Britpop, although he clearly was ambivalent about the term. On his first outing, Haines witty lyricism is already apparent. The balance of cellos, chamber pop and guitars are compelling, and this is one of the better early 90s releases.

There is nothing wrong with this record but there is also nothing that makes it worthy of being on this list.

Gave this two listens and it didn't massively grab me. Fave track - "Early Years", maybe? Or "Home Again"? Dunno, didn't really hear any stand out tracks...

My first thought upon seeing an album literally called "New Wave" by a British band, after listening to what seems like 376 British New Wave bands on this list was "God dammit" Butttttt this album is pretty good? I like the vocals a lot, and the melodies are catchy. I like the melancholy without dipping into full-on Smiths-style ennui. If more new wave was like this I think I'd be less likely to say "God dammit" when I see a new wave album. Closer to a 3.5 or even a 3.75, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

This is the first one of these I’d never heard before. They’re kind of fun, basically Blur but a little slower paced. Think I like Blur better though.

Never heard of The Auteurs, and judging by the brevity of this album’s wikipedia entry it kinda fluked its way onto the list. But I liked it! I thought the The Neil Tennant/Ian Broudie style vocals would start to annoy me but they didn’t. There are lots of nice melodies, decent 90s guitars and some interesting lines. 3.5, but I’ll round up because I think it deserves more love than it’s evidently had.

I liked Show Girl and American Guitars but otherwise this didn’t do it for me. The British punk Smiths-esque vocal sound has never been my thing. Probably missed out on some lyrics that would improve the rating as there were a few I really enjoyed.

I couldn't tell you what songs were on this album and I just listened to it. How is that even possible? Trying to think back, it is just fog. No outlines. No impressions. Not even the curvy, fluffy edges of a cloud. Just greyish non.

So, I listened to the entire album and YouTube took me straight into their next album. I was completely unaware of the transition. It sounded exactly the same. Couldn't really tell you where one song ended and the next began let alone when the album changed. Really seemed as though there was only one thing on the menu.

SUPER digging this album. Not a very unique sound, but one I enjoy.

This didn’t make much of an impact on me either way. A general impression of glam-inflected English alt-pop, somewhat arch lyrics that never really hooked my attention. Perfectly competent but I wouldn’t seek it out.

What an odd discovery. This is right up my alley, released when I was in high school, and I had never heard of it. In another dimension, I saw this on 120 Minutes, ran out to buy the CD the next day, then recorded it for my best friend, telling her it reminded me of all of our favorite movie soundtracks combined. And yet, in reality, nothing, until 29 years later. I have some catching up to do.

Best Song: American Guitars. Droning, but the most likeable of this relatively boring bunch. Worst Song: Junk Shop Clothes. Intentionally and unintentionally sleepy. Overall: Nothing of note here. Really just dull, milquetoast offerings. I[d forgotten most of the album by the next day. I'll probably lose recognition memory within a month.

Classy, sophisticated songwriting from the BritPop era yet not quite fitting the swaggering, posing mould of bands from that time, The Auteurs’ New Wave is a beautifully crafted album that rewards repeat listens.

Three stars and a half ? Four stars ? The Auteurs is a band I've only been vaguely aware of before, and this app gave me the opportunity to delve further into that first record of theirs, *New Wave*. I'm not sure I'm totally sold about it being an *essential* listen, but it's been a pleasant ride nonetheless. Like many other reviewers in here, I think it has a strong start ("Show Girls", that instantly catchy "Bailed Out", and "American Guitars") and a nice end line, between "Early Years" and "Home Again" (which sounds a little like Elvis Costello's "Complicated Shadows", oddly enough). Maybe the middle of the album is too much of a notch under those particular songs, generally speaking. Well, except for that cello-enhanced "How Could I Be Wrong" (in comparison, a track such as "Don't Trust the Stars" is a little too linear and *middle-of-the-road* rock/britpop, for instance). But I'm all too aware those sorts of songs often grow on you as you keep on listening to them, so I'll give those somewhat less striking cuts the benefit of the doubt. I could actually see myself returning to this album, depending on my mood. I also feel like the lyrics make it worth it too--I spotted some very interesting and/or funny lines about quite picturesque scenes, but I have to admit I didn't pay a lot of attention to them this time. Speaking of other people's comments, I was quite intrigued by the fact that a few reviewers heard a little bit of Arctic Monkeys in The Auteurs' sound. I would have never thought of that by myself. But I have to admit that for certain subtle moments, the comparison made more than a little sense... Luke Haines seems to have a knack for snarls delivered in a laidback fashion. He might not exactly be a Alex Turner, but this particular arrow is maybe not so far off the mark, come to think of it... As a consequence, this may have a bearing on my own geeky list of 1001 albums. When the time comes for this app to suggest a minor Arctic Monkey album, as it will probably do, (say "Humbug" or "Suck It And See"), I might be inclined to just replace it with this "New Wave" here (and so have a broader scope on British pop/rock--and more importantly, leave some room for other sorts of records). That list won't be infinite. You can't have them all, can you? I bought this album aged 13. Thought it would make me look edgy and cool and intellectual and all the babes would want a piece as a result. It didn't achieve any of those goals. But it did soundtrack the beginning of years of rejection from the local female-folk. sad times.

Il semblerait que Robert ait commis une bévue il y a de cela quelques mois. En effet, une panne de courant majeure a eu lieu à son domicile. Afin de faire repartir l'ensemble du système électrique, Robert du bidouiller ses différents cables, et c'est là que le problème survint. Au moment de s'emparer du cable de génération d'albums, Robert commit l'irréparable. Il empoigna le cable et le brancha, non pas à la liste des 1001 albums à écouter avant de mourir, mais à la liste des 1001 albums à intérêt très modéré. La suite, vous la connaissez, cela fait maintenant 3 mois que nous n'avons plus rien à nous mettre sous la dent. Heureusement, Robert a été alerté, et tout devrait rentrer dans l'ordre dans les prochains jours. Attendez-vous tout de même à une maintenance du site dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi, nécessaire au reboot du serveur.

Very early Britpop, taking inspiration from the later Kinks and the jangle pop of The Smiths. It's really decent. I love the mild jangle sound and the vocals. Pitch changes and sudden shifts in melody keep me engaged. I preferred the prettier, janglier tracks, but the heavy tracks like "American Guitars" reminded me of early Suede and Jesus & Mary Chain (and to some extend shoegaze). There were a lot of duds, but I even songs like "Don't Trust the Stars" but even then I enjoyed the parts where the guitar suddenly stops but gets dragged back immediately by the vocals. Also enjoyed the other instruments, like the cello in "Bailed Out" and the chimey percussion in "Starstruck." Favorites: Show Girl, Bailed Out, Junk Shop Clothes, Starstruck, How Could I Be Wrong

Great album. I liked it the first time I heard it last year. It just keeps getting better. Interesting sound. I'm glad this album was on this list so I got to know it. 4/5

This is a great discovery. It's an interesting varied album. Vocally it's quite mellow and reminds me of The Monkees contrasted with some power pop (love the guitar sound). Some of the songs are quite moody ('Show Girl', Bailed Out') whereas others have a whimsical late sixties baroque-pop feel ('Junk Shop Clothes', 'Starstruck', 'Housebreaker', 'Valet Parking') with some musical colour from instruments like harpsichord, strings, celeste, piano, mouth harp. Others like 'How Can I Be Strong' have a heavier psychedelic edge. The lyrics are probably the weakest element but there's some nice melodies and arrangements to compensate. It's a bit of a quirky left field album ("critics favorite") and quite tellingly I was the only one in my group to give it a high rating. All in all, this is a very enjoyable album to play on spring afternoon, so I will definitely play it again when the weather is nicer than today!

Showgirl was a nice song I'd heard on a compilation many moons ago. The rest complete arse.

Hmm. Not all that great but OK in parts I suppose.

Whiny singing style: quite contrived. I feel like the musician is more into the guitar playing than the singing. The lyrics don't connect with me personally, so I find it hard to give a shit. Maybe you can't win with me though, the lyrics are VERY easy to understand (well enunciated and not jumbled in strange rhythms). If they were less hard to understand would I like them more?

Starts out strong with Show Girl. They have some good dynamics, which tends to get lost for a lot of UK bands of the 90s. Enjoyable, hooky tunes throughout, but gets a little...meh. Production seems a little thin and tinny. Not totally my thing, but having been unfamiliar with this band, I'm excited to give them some future listens. Curious what the album with μ-Ziq is all about as I love μ-Ziq's stuff!

I mean, it's fine, but really nothing special. I'm surprised at the number of albums on this list that all fit into this sort of Brit-pop/British alternative category. Love this album. As into Britpop as I was, I cannot believe that I've never hear of this album, nor the band. I don't know I can give it a 5 but it's an album I'd come back to over and over.

They remind me of the Arcade Fire mixed with Pink Floyd and maybe the Smiths or Cure. A lot going on here. It's a fun album overall.

Okay, I don't hate this! I can't quite put my finger on who this sounds like, but definitely a classic new wave/garage rock type sound. A little fuzzy in the vocals, a little backfeed in the vocals/guitar. Nothing super compelling happening. I'm leaning toward two stars because it's just so bland.

Want to like this album more than I do because of Auteurs history as Britpop outsiders. However I hate Luke Haines' voice so don't think I'll ever listen to this again. Also, every song sounds like an acoustic guitar demo that's had other instruments thrown at it. The album could sound a lot better than it does.

yet another album i feel i should've enjoyed more than i actually did. i wish i had something to say about it. at one point, a song came on that got my attention; it was by some other artist, because this album had finished and spotify just grabbed whatever and played it, and that's how i knew it was over. on the other hand, the harmonies can be unexpectedly delicate, the guitar work is surprisingly compelling, and i honestly love homeboy's voice. it's just...somehow, despite all that, this one just kinda missed me. i'm giving it 4 because i feel like the problem this time around was me.

this is what indie used to mean before lad bands. probably wouldn't have seen a load of portly mid 30s weller men standing like penguins with their feet at ten to two at one of their gigs. probably would have just been a bit miserable. not a bad album, consistent level throughout, just a little bit wet.

Okay britpop from Suede's ugly younger brother.

"How Could I Be Wrong" came in and slapped me in the face for some reason. The whole album was really great. I didn't want to stop listening. I think this type of music is one of my favorite sounds of this project, to be honest.

The last 3 tracks were bangers rest was very forgettable

54. New Wave - The Auters 12 tracks. It's a sort of throaty, husky vocal that is crying out for some contrast in terms of either tempo or volume, but he just drones on all the way through the album. Only on "Home Again" did it click and hint at what might have been. 2/5

3.5/5 Starts pretty good with "Show Girl" an enjoyable track, with great vibes. Then in "Bailed Out", sounds more acoustic, but not as good as the one before. "American Guitars" starts pretty heavy, almost give me shoegaze vibes, but it goes more pop, anyway the guitars are enjoyable. "Don´t trust the stars" adds more distorsion to the riff, which makes the song more upbeat. "Starstruck" is like a sleep song, pass. However, "How could I be wrong" is much better. Then "Housebreaker" probably my favorite song on the album. "Idiot Brother" is also a song with chill vibes, and a nice riff. The vocals are pretty decent. But most of the part it falls into sound generic, but still is a good album, especially considering it´s a debut. Probably gonna check it out again soon.

You gotta admire the balls it takes to name a record "New Wave" in 1993, when (hair metal aside) there wasn't a more uncool genre. Funny, it sounds nothing like New Wave music. I actually really like this. Have never heard of this band before. It's very well produced, the songs are solid, and I like the sound of the vocals. Reminds me a little bit of Pulp and The Weakerthans. Cheeky and cutting all at once. Highlights: "American Guitars" has to by a veiled dig at grunge music, right? Funny. "Valet Parking" has some nice subtle harmonies.

Nothing really special about this one - sounds like a pretty typical early-90s album. It has a little more of an "indy rock" sound I suppose. It's like they were trying to do something different, but just didn't really pull it off I enjoyed it though. It fits right in with all the other stuff I would have listened to on the radio during this time in my life - shades of Blur, Weezer, Soul Asylum, etc. But it obviously never broke through then, and it doesn't really stand out now.

Good album! Definately an example of why I tend to be drawn to British musicians. Though I'd need a couple more listens to give a more detailed description. The album seems to fit more in with the late 80s alternative period than the new grunge scene in the states. I feel like I can hear sounds that would influence groups like the Arctic Monkeys a decade later. Favorite Songs: Early Years

Sort of an oddity of an album- feels sort of like T Rex but less glam and more early American indie. Feels like it could either be forgettable or an album that slowly grows on you with repeated listens.

This album features airy, guitar-driven pop tunes from early 90’s Brits. The tunes get lost from one to the next but maybe after several listens that would change. Not bad but nothing that makes my ears perk up. I had never heard of this band; they got a short burst of fame in UK before their time was up. I don’t even know what the name of the band means. Ok I just looked it up. Auteur is a filmmaker whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that the filmmaker is regarded as the author of the movie.

Never heard of this band but they are a new favorite. Death Cabbish but slightly grungier.

Is the Arctic monkeys before the Arctic monkeys?! A bit more gentle in their rock approach. I like the vibe of the songs how ever I find there is a sound mixing issue and distinguishing the lyrics on some tracks is a little difficult. Good overall mix of songs and variety of tempos. Overall a good listen.
