Wave goodbye

Does this bloke think he's Marc Bolan? Meh. I'll just go listen to T. Rex. Why the fuck should I listen to this bland shit before I die? Is this list... a joke?

Some good ideas, but mostly forgettable songs and uninspiring delivery.

Good weird but probably needs a few listens.

Okay, I don't hate this! I can't quite put my finger on who this sounds like, but definitely a classic new wave/garage rock type sound. A little fuzzy in the vocals, a little backfeed in the vocals/guitar. Nothing super compelling happening. I'm leaning toward two stars because it's just so bland.

Want to like this album more than I do because of Auteurs history as Britpop outsiders. However I hate Luke Haines' voice so don't think I'll ever listen to this again. Also, every song sounds like an acoustic guitar demo that's had other instruments thrown at it. The album could sound a lot better than it does.

54. New Wave - The Auters 12 tracks. It's a sort of throaty, husky vocal that is crying out for some contrast in terms of either tempo or volume, but he just drones on all the way through the album. Only on "Home Again" did it click and hint at what might have been. 2/5

It’s fine, but they all sound the same - and his voice is very weak. If it had been good, I would have been listening to it in 1993!

Not New Wave. Never heard of this band, pretty forgettable though not unpleasant, why is this in this list?

Nothing really special about this one - sounds like a pretty typical early-90s album. It has a little more of an "indy rock" sound I suppose. It's like they were trying to do something different, but just didn't really pull it off I enjoyed it though. It fits right in with all the other stuff I would have listened to on the radio during this time in my life - shades of Blur, Weezer, Soul Asylum, etc. But it obviously never broke through then, and it doesn't really stand out now.

I wasn’t moved by this. Pretty boring.

Anemic and generic. Best track: Idiot Brother

Pretty unremarkable. 5/10

Sort of an oddity of an album- feels sort of like T Rex but less glam and more early American indie. Feels like it could either be forgettable or an album that slowly grows on you with repeated listens.

Harmless but unremarkable. Fin.

Not a fan. Songs were way too similar to each other. Did not like Junk Shop Clothes.

Ugh. Pretentious and unoriginal with hyper-affected lead vocals.

Another British snoozer

Very "great local band" vibe tbh

Found it a bit dated and meh. Would maybe go back for another listen though

It's alright, its just not my kind of thing. 2/5

Very, very meh. Not even bad, but I got nothing out of this.

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: How Could I Be Wrong, Idiot Brother, Home Again Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Sophisti-britpop. Kinda reminded me of the slower songs from the Blur album. Bet the indie brits went crazy over this one.

Very very repetitive. Nothing of note.

This album started okay and then got worse. So somewhere between a 2 and a 3 out of 5 for me.

Puh, laaangweilig.

Fairly average

Meh. Singer’s voice was annoying.

Maybe 2.5 but that would be generous. It started out alright, but I was hating it by the end.

Songs: Early Years, Bailed Out, Subculture (hidden track).

Pretty minimalist. Felt like the only ones but softer

Music good, lyrics a bit pedestrian, and vocals get boring to the ear quickly.

Nice, but all the songs kind of melt together. Makes for a cohesive listening experience but also causes you to drift off and stop really listening.

Fine, but blended into the background

forgettable

Ei jäänyt erityisesti mieleen. Vika biisi vaikutti hauskalta.

Boring

This dude keeps shoving aggressively mediocre brit-pop/brit-rock down our throats. Maybe you had to be there? I got a few tracks in before I had to consciously not turn it off and ultimately made through 10 out of the 12 tracks before I couldn't take it anymore. 1.5 stars

Forgettable.

Has the hallmarks of a one hit wonder that snobby music critics would hail as the next big thing, which didn’t happen. Except I don’t even know which one was the one hit wonder. Easy skip.

Not really my style.

This is yet another bland and boring Britpop album. There seems to be no superlative redeeming qualities that could make this shine as a landmark album of its time. There is nothing that is specially offensive or terrible, but nothing really sticks out, there is nothing to revisit here. 6/10 [DROP]

Review - truly one of the worst albums I've ever heard. The amount of britpop this list has given me has already been truly heinous, but this made me appreciate the levels in britpop. I would take another fucking Blur album, or another Damon Albarn side hustle, over this terrible also-ran. Truly abysmal record. He can't sing! And he doesn't try! Score - 0.5/10 Need to listen? NO

Not for me. Found it much to contrived and formulaic

No. Remove this please. Awful.

Literally within two seconds I realized this would be more Britrock slop. I scrolled down on Apple Music and lo and behold, this album is in the "I Miss Britpop" playlist.

I found this very boring

Why is there so much britpop on this damn list?

Dreadful. Instantly forgettable (and I really hope I do forget it). I honestly couldn't even focus in on one part of it - were the lyrics good? Basslines? Production? The overall result was so utterly vapid I couldn't tell you and don't care. When I first started writing this it was 2*. Now it's 1. SHITE.

I'm a bit angry at how tedious this album is. I must be missing something others can hear because this is just lifeless to me. They sound like they'd really like to have been The Beatles. I very much do not like this album. It's sucking my soul out of me.

The final boss of shitty support bands that you deliberately avoid watching

Is not my cup of tea.

Boring…boring….boring

This was the first time that I listened to a PIL album and I thought it was pretty good. I like it a bit more than the Sex Pistols actually. I think the song Low Life sounded a lot like a Pixies tune.

This was boring and uninspired. This was so bland, flat, monotone to me.

Incredibly boring

There is so much britpop on this list and literally none of it is good. Highlights: Startstruck

Pretentious with no real reason to be. The singing was irritating and wasn’t doing it for me at all. And reading more about this bands lead singer just makes me go from a passive dislike of this to more of a feeling of hatred. I never need to hear this bullshit again.

HATED this. Cannot stand this genre of voice. It sounds like it's difficult for him to sing. It sounds like he's trying to sing while someone is stood on his chest. If your voice is like that, you have no business being a singer. Couldn't even listen to the music. Simply dreadful. Sorry.

I saw another reviewers take on this, and I’ll just borrow their work: “I am 1/3 of the way through this list. There has been no Pearl Jam, no Snoop Dogg, no Alice in Chains, no Soundgarden, no Stone Temple Pilots, no Tool and yet I have to stomach third-tier BritPop garbage that sounds like Blur on clonazepam? No, man, no.”

Not for me

More British bull shit. I could literally move to London and not hear as much terrible music from the UK, because they are not even listening to this garbage. At this point I’m convinced this is a sadistic attempt to jack fuck my Spotify algorithm.

Didn’t like this. Irritating and simpering.

Didn’t do much for me.

Buns cheeks

Just dull, boring music

How can you make an album called “New Wave” and not have a single new wave song on it? This is false advertising and my lawsuit is forthcoming. After listening to the Beatles for our last review, it’s startling just how bad the vocalist for “the auteurs” wants to be John Lennon. According to some further research this is the guy from black box recorder? Damn, that’s a group I really like. I’m curious how someone could go from making this boring alt-brit-pop to something so great. Back to this album, it’s really boring. It was another record that I struggled to power through, and I don’t feel my life is any bit improved for having done so. I guess it’s a little heavier than all the other britpop I’ve been forced to listen to, but that hardly makes it any more enjoyable. Not for me. 1*

Another knock-off Beatles sounding album. Sigh.

"Milquetoast" is the work that came to mind while listening to this album. It was just...there. I feel like if the band had leaned into a particular sound, theme, emotion it would have popped more. As it is, it's just songs being played in the background, easily ignored.

Why would you include more of the same sounding britpop shit? I could've happily died without listening to this pile of nothing.

On today's episode of "Random Obscure British Bands Nobody Cares About", we have...drumroll, please...The Auteurs! (The nonexistent crowd goes mild). Anyway, this album is absolutely mediocre. I literally see zero reason to care about this band and ZERO REASON to put them here over Weezer's infinitely better Blue Album, or a death metal record, or really any record of any significance that was snubbed from the list. The band remain forgotten nowadays, having been buried a thousand feet deep under the remains of Britpop as a movement. This being here is offensive, and therefore it gets a 1. I think I need to upgrade Neon Bible to a 2 now because this is so insubstantial as to make that look good in comparison(it isn't, at least not for me).

So unmistakably bad that I have to believe the creator of this list, who has a clear affinity with British new-wave, saw those words and blindly put this album on the list. 1/5 go listen to my 2025 AOTY I Love My Computer by Ninajirachi

oh boy this was lame as hell

Sounded like a derivative sound of something else I don't like

When I first started this album I thought that it didn't need to be on this list. It was just another boring brit-pop album. However, the further I got into it the more I realized that......... I hate this album. I absolutely hate this guys voice! It's so annoying. Is he really doing symbol noises at the end of "How Could I Be Wrong"? The melodies are simple and the lyrics are boring. There's nothing new or innovative here. Maybe if this came out in the early 70's there might be some influence. Coming out in the 90's? Come on. No one was influenced or had their mind blown listening to this album. I need to see the justification of why I needed to listen to this before I die.

Pretentious. There are some interesting musical moments, but the vocalist ruins most of the tunes. All the lyrics are delivered the same way — all self-certain, no humor. A 2, but could also be a 1. Ok, it’s a 1.

This is bad. Not interesting, time capsule of britpop sounds drowning in averageness. Playing is mid at best, songwriting bad, singing is shit. Then I found out what a pretentious prick luke haines is and had to downgrade from meh not good to fuck this. To have that much ambition and be so average makes you fucking awful and insufferable to boot. Boo

I thought the first line of Show Girl was “I took a shit” which actually would be way better in prepping you in for a shit ride that this album is.

Moody and pretentious. Not my cup of tea.

auteur: a filmmaker whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that the filmmaker is regarded as the author of the movie. They should've made movies instead of music... Would I listen to this again? Uh, no.

Boooooorrrrriiing

I noticed immediately that this album has very few listens. After listening, I knew why. But WHY did it make the 1,001 albums you MUST here ... I think it's because it's such a rarity. Until this app was made, I think there were 6 people who had heard it before, and you could be the 7th. But of course, now with the app, I was like the 27,000th, still not bad. I can say I was OG to hear this one.

I usually reserve one star reviews for extremely experimental albums which to my mind constitute “noise”, but once every few months something pops up on this list which leaves me dumbfounded as to why it would ever be considered for inclusion. This is one of those albums. At least Throbbing Gristle were trying to do something different. The Auters on the other hand seem to have produced an album of third rate b-sides and fillers without creating any sense of excitement whatsoever. It’s just so damn dull, so damn “meh”. I was down to the last few tracks before I found anything remotely of interest and then it was only interesting in an “ooh that’s a little better than bang average” kind of way. The vocals are awful, the production is awful. The only justification for this being on the list is as an example of the perfect execution of a collection of nothing songs in a hard to like way. A waste of my time.

Boring

Oh boy another brit-pop album. Maybe this will be the one. Nope not even close.

Just the most bland Britpop album ever made with Terrible vocals

No. It's not as bad as some of the rap crap you've put on this list, but it is pretty uninspiring. Didn't make it through the whole album. NEXT!

Fucking hell, yet another “British alternative rock band” from the 90s. ChatGPT could come up with a better list of 1001 albums to listen to.

No effort was put into: writing memorable hooks; using anything except the most garden-variety chords; coming up with interesting arrangements; sounding like anything except warmed-over mid-tempo glam rock (except for the times when they sound like third-rate Beatles copyists). Sounds like the product of a dude who thought his lyrics were so exquisite that the music was little more than a secondary concern (as is the case with a lot of British alt rock from this time period.)

Not a good album - some songs were okayish, others were bad. There was not a single good song. The singer's voice isn't good, and the mixing choice was to put it upfront and center, which further reduces the album's quality. This album is a big no thank you from me.

Flat and boring.

Sounds like discount Beatles

Not for me. 1/5

I thought this was shit but maybe I'm just in a bad mood today. The Wikipedia article states "New Wave laid the groundwork for what would subsequently become Britpop", and that's a crime that should never be forgiven. I hate songs where the chorus is just the name of the song repeated, and this album is a serial offender (see Bailed Out, American Guitars). I normally give the daily album a few spins, but one will do for this guy. Maybe I'll come back to it.

I don’t think that I’m a fan of Britpop. The vocals were weak and it sounded like that he was mumbling his words.

A pretty forgettable rock album. Simple melodies and simple rhythms with bland vocals, and all of the songs feel very drab and lack emotion.

At first, it thought this album was ok. But the more I listened to it, the more it was the same thing over and over again. Worse yet, the singer lacks any type of range or strength to his voice. His falsetto is inferior. And their choruses are totally repetitive and uninspired (eg American Guitars and Starstruck). I’ll say it again, like I did on my last review for Rocket From The Crypt, there is no discernible reason why this album is on here. This band never did anything in the US, never had a top 20 UK album, top 40 single anywhere, nor did they influence anyone or anything. I don’t understand why this is included, and while it might be good enough to give a 2 (it’s better than RFTC), it gets a 1 because it does not belong anywhere near a list of top albums you need to hear. Go find the early albums from Live, Tonic, Toad The Wet Sprocket, or Vertical Horizon instead.

No no no...no place on this list imo...

Simply put, I really do not like his voice. The songwriting is really poor too. Only ‘Show Girl’, ‘Idiot Brother’ and ‘Early Years’ were worthy of better than a 1 star.

Right away I kinda hate it. It's giving "pretentious hipster I had a crush on in college and now cringe at" The whole album feels like a charmless whiny jerk with not much to say (on Genius "Haines has claimed that he has no idea what Showgirl is about," the whole chorus is American Guitars, the SNORING SOUNDS in Junk Shop Clothes). The subtle but sustained misogyny and classism (all of Showgirl, "A backwoods trier... Your time is mine. What's yours is mine, all mine" in Housebreaker, and "they were like a pair of dumb dogs rolling in the dirt" in Idiot Brother) is far too much for me. The only song with any possible message seems to be Baader Meinhof but even then it's political word salad.

I am very much NOT a new wave fan

I couldn't get past 25 seconds into 'Junk Shop Clothes'.

This guy's voice is Top 5 worst

44 minutes of my life I wish I had back. I’d rather walk barefooted on sweet gum balls than to listen to this drivel. 1001 album worthy: No - 64/119

Least favorite tracks: bailed out, home again i’ll be honest — i wasn’t really listening to this. mostly had it on the background and it really didn’t speak to me. i can’t with the vocals — just too nasally and whiney for my taste.

Very average band and music, lacks originality

Terrible that this is called new wave. It’s more 90’s Oasis-is-big-let’s-capitalize. Didn’t even make it through

I didn't actively hate any of the music by the band, but I did actively HATE the vocals. I think the best example of this is on American Guitars (ironically enough) where any absence of the lead guitar playing makes the song sound dull. I kept waiting for a song to come on that would change my mind, but it just never happened. I don't know, if I take the vocals out of the equation, this is perfectly fine alt-rock music. Still nothing really that special though. Thought about giving it a 2 for the instrumentals alone, but I'm just left wondering why this generic album was included on the list when there is so much more interesting/better alt rock out there.

1. girl - 0 2. out - 1 3. guitarz - 1 4. clothez - 1 5. truzt- 0 6. ztarz - 0 7. uurong - 1 8. houze - 0 9. parking - 0 10. brother - 0 11. early - 0 12. home - 0

terribly boring album

Boring, bland, no business being on this list

This was incredibly boring and if you've ever heard british indie music, you've heard this album but likely 100 times better. So unbelievably pretentious at times, thought I was giving this 2 stars but writing this I'm getting more annoyed about what I just listened to.

Terrible

10 years too late. Felt unoriginal and a bit boring whilst trying to be something clever and articulate. Bit disappointed to be honest, because I love the album artwork. There were some nice songs and moments, but overall it was a bit lackluster.

Terrible. 1/5

Gear: Focal Clear (ZMFed) Artwork: 📸🔳🤕 Production: 🎧😐🆗 Music: 🌧️🔁🙄 Rating: 🌊/5

Pfft. This sounds like a past their prime filmmaker’s opinion of what hip music sounds like. It’s the type of thing that shows up in medical shows like New Amsterdam or Scrubs to show how emotional and deep and cool the cast and audience is, all the while being none of those things. None of the songs stand out. It’s plain I ecream - not even vanilla. Just frozen milk. Edible but unpalatable. Dull and predictable. Mostly uninteresting. .5 for the slightly interesting vocals. Otherwise one. 1.5 Rounded down.

so far, nothing catchy or great I wouldn't hear outside the local Starbucks. this shit is slow and boring.

Boo. This sucked

Yeah maybe I’m just tired of mid albums but damn this was ass. Nothing of note.

Oh boy I love boring as fuck british alt rock with nasally vocals, please continue giving me more albums like this!

there's nothing wrong with cribbing from your inspirations, lots of great art and especially music does it, but you do have to put something interesting or novel into the mix, or what's the point? i liked Idiot Brother at least

This is offensively bland. The musical equivalent of watching paint dry. I wanted it to be over from about track 2.

This album does not earn the level of pretentious that the band name, album name, and cover presume.

Why are they always droney

not one song on here was that good

I’m not sure how some of these albums make it on to this list. Not for me 1/5

Blehhhhhhh

Thankfully this passed me by in 1993. Dull as dishwasher!

Had never heard of this band before - after listening I know why.

An ok album, most tracks sounded alike

Fuck britpop. I could save a lot of listening time by auto rating all good britpop to 1 or 2 stars. 1.41

Melancholy, minor keys, repetitive guitars. Some early U2 sounds in some songs. Not my thing.

“I want Oasis” “We have Oasis at home” Oasis at home…

Wow, this was even worse than I had imagined it to be. Boring music, terrible vocals, songwriting that ain't half as clever as it thinks it is - 1993 in the mud!

Ruined my Wednesday morning

A distinct lack of emotion, I’m already tired of this genre of Brit Rock

I don't know if this album influenced many britpop artists of the 90's, or whether they just sound like all of them, but I heard Ash, Long Pigs, Blur, Oasis, Elastica, etc, etc, etc, all throughout this album. If they influenced all those artists with this offering then they eserve some kudos but I suspect this is just another britpop - inidie offering. I found it uninpiring, middle of the road and, that worst slight of all, tepid. 2 stars bordering on 1. No. I'll give it a 1 as I'm never going to listen to this again.

Wow I really hated this album. DNF

meh. 1 star. won't be back.

i couldn't tell you why this album is here. sure, my ears didn't bleed, but new wave was not full of the new wave genre but instead that boring, unremarkable indie music of the aughts. i suppose the auteurs were ahead of their time, with this album's release in 1993. anyway, new wave's inclusion made sense once i read it was part of early britpop--and then i understood why i found it so boring!

Seguimos con los LP coñazos. Me parece que me voy a dar de baja.

Poor show.

i was going to write "au revoir!", but actually "piss off" is more appropriate since I'd prefer never to encounter this again

Listened to it twice and that one star is a reminder not to listened to it again.

Only 1 song I really liked on here

1/5. Mostly boring. It’s airy and sweet but not worth listening to. It’s at best fine but I’d rather be listening to most anything else.

For fuck sakes, why are there so many shitty britpop/shoegaze artists on this fucking list. There is so much music more deserving of a spot on this list. This garbage was made by un-enthusiastic goth idiots. Sounds like they had no interest in being there. Shitty simplistic musical accompaniment, and nasally moany singing. I could have gone my life without listening to this stupid angst filled bullshit. Whoever put this list together needs their head examined. Fuck this album. There's 40 minutes of my life I'll never get back. No redeeming qualities. Utter trash. Favourite songs: Subculture (They Can't Find Him) (hidden track at the end of the album), Idiot Brother, Junk Shop Clothes Least favourite songs: Bailed Out, American Guitars, Starstruck... and others.. It was so bland I drifted off a few times 1/5

Surely the lead singer is holding his nose while he sings. This is a truly annoying piece of crap.

The soft vocal sound does not work for me here, with really dull songwriting. Most of the song intros just make me want to turn them off, with repetitive chords and strumming and beats.

Whinge-pop.

not good

I do not like this.

Great, an Indie album from the 90s. Its only benefit is that is less than 45 minutes long. It has the whiny annoying singer, bad lyrics, and the music itself is meh. It is not the worst album on the list but it is not a 2. I will round down.

Shit sandwich

Not good

This feels like pretty generic UK indie pop. I don't really know how it made this list. I hated the poncey vocals and got more annoyed with each subsequent song.

Didn’t like it

Showgirl was a nice song I'd heard on a compilation many moons ago. The rest complete arse.

Sorry what though now? Where’s the good music on this list?

Lots of boring singer-songwriter cliches that aren't bad per se, but aren't very engaging. Also Luke Haines' voice is a bit annoying to me. Favorite Tracks: "Show Girl"

Not a fan.

Este britpop pedorro!!!

Ushered in a new era of bland, limp-wristed, badly sung indie. Too many songs about stars. Did not like one bit.

Boring. Does not touch me.

I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, I just found it boring

9 of the songs sounded like the same thong with different words. Was not until the last two songs that it showed signs of life. Could exist without listening to it ever again

Dull then. Dull now.

I could have gone my whole life and not heard this album. It was straight garbage.

This was some trish trash, like wtf is this doing on the list haha

Stumpfbeat umrahmtes Langweiler Songwriting. Egale 0.7

Som det står i bio'n: "..British press linked them with the massively popular Suede...". Tenker det sier sitt - terningkast 1.
