Reviews (page 7 of 7)
The Pixar guy gives us a half hour of bright piano pop. I don't really see the appeal. The instrumentation was all pretty bland and predictable, but at least there was diversity. "Last Night I Had the Dream" was the only one that sounded cool. Even the critically acclaimed "Sail Away" was too simple and boring. It's not awful and its short length and pop-style make it easily digestible, but I see no reason to revisit.
Its quite the disservice but every song just sounds like "you've got a friend in me"
Didn't really enjoy this, I think it's mainly because I don't like his voice (sorry Randy).
Nice enough
Bit of a bore?
Political Science kind of a banger. Rest is just not for me. Not offensive or anything. Nothing I would choose to listen to again. Also the 2 non-remastered tracks that Spotify has are better than the remastered tracks, not sure if that holds true for any others.
Not much interesting here for me. Favorite track: Lonely at the Top
Just makes me think of Toy Story. Not a huge fan of it TBH, even though on paper it seems like I should. Maybe like 2.5 stars?
Real chill, didn't grab me. I can't stop hearing Family Guy's version of Randy Newman.
It is a nice album to listen to but I'll never listen to it again. Each song is kind of a worse version of you've got a friend in me. No standouts on this album (bad or good)
I expected more from this album being familiar with some of Newman's work. It fell a little flat for me. 2/5
I can see absolutely why other people love Randy Newman. But I just don't click. Perhaps a result of associating him with Woody and Buzz. Sorry Randy.
Best Song: Old Man. A nice, quiet sort of lullaby. Worst Song: God's Song. This is really more of an interesting poem than a listenable song. Overall: Pretty one note. And that note is extremely nasal.
blah
bleh. this was like listening to that uncle who loved to play the piano, but never any good songs, just weird ones he made up.
Sound like a mix of the Toy Story soundtrack and curb your enthusiasm
Old Toy Story sounding ass
Randy Newman is overrated imho. He has a few good songs that make him stand out, but other than that it’s nothing special
Ganz alt, eher boring
This is so cheesy and Newman's voice is so silly that I can't tell whether it's supposed to be treated as a joke or not. But as a serious piece of music, it just doesn't do it for me. Part of what makes great music great is the depth of sound, and especially the interplay between different instruments. I hate to damn an entire genre based on missing just one aspect of musical performance, but it's a really important one, and it's just very hard for one guy singing with a single accompanying instrument to match that kind of color. The singer-songwriter style often work well as a change-of-pace track to break things up on an otherwise full-sounding album, but this is an entire record of Randy singing over his own, fairly light piano accompaniment. "Political Science" is probably the standout track, in part because it's clever, but mostly because it actually has some solid sound behind it. And there's some other nice compositions on here, but the thin production and Newman's voice just don't do them justice.
When you know Randy Newman can produce a song as magical and eternal as You've Got a Friend in Me, everything else he does is really disappointing. Maybe that's unfair as it's an impossibly high bar to hit a second time, let along be held to overall, but yeah, Sail Away is passable by comparison, and even then only because of the first two tracks plus Political Science. They're nice and sweet, I do like his voice more than most because it's authentic and easy, but 2/5 for the overall memorability of the album.
I just personally really dislike his voice. Instrumentation was… fine. His songs all kind of sound the same.
Hard to listen to Randy Newman's voice since his Pixar-related hit: You've got a Friend in Me...
This felt like B-sides from a Toy Story movie. There were some gems in here, but all I could think of was Monk and Pixar. A lot of tedious tracks as well. But some good ones. I'm thinking a light 4.
Nista mi se nije isticalo na albumu
This was a pretty boring album that felt like an endless Toy Story song. It was like listening to polished, censured, and sanitized "Americana" music.
I wasn't all that familiar with Randy Newman beyond "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story. That's a great track and perfect for the movie, although completely irrelevant for a review of Sail Away. I couldn't help but feel like the aforementioned song would be next, such is the idiosyncratic style of the music, maybe mainly driven by Newman's distinctive drawl. You Can Keep Your Hat On was ok but the rest of the album faded a bit into insignificance. Not an unpleasant listen but don't feel like I need to come back to this one.
meh
I don't know what to do with Randy Newman's music. Yes, I like his work with the Toy Story music for Pixar. I have a hard time not hearing the parodies of Newman when I hear him perform on his own. Sail Away left me feeling many of the same things as the previous album I reviewed from Newman. The one track I knew from Sail Away is my all time least favorite song from Newman, and I will drop this album to 2 stars for that track alone. I don't think I want to hear anyone trying to flirt that way in a song. Ick!
Americana with southern roots. Hints of trad and Dixie jazz from the brass and southern rock in.the guitar. Dr John light. Bit too god-y in places for me.
2/5 not my cup of tea
My review of this album: yeah, sure. It's music, it's certainly not bad, but the overall style isn't for me. Feels kind of slow, simple, and plodding, with repetitive chords and slow bass-lines. Again, it's really not bad, but it didn't hold my interest.
He's a good song writer, but this collection didn't hang together for me. Also, why the strings? They don't add anything. I love sarcasm as much as the next man, but does every line need to be dripping? This album got me thinking about who could be a Randy Newman fan. I'm fine hearing any of his songs, but who in 1972 ran out to buy this album and played it until it wore out? Wiki suggests that Brian Wilson did, but maybe he's the only one.
Randy newman fatigue
Nope
It sure was a Randy Newman album
just boring, really poor effort and awful vocals
For me and probably many others my first thought was: "oh, it's the Toy Story guy. This could be fun". It isn't. There's some charm that comes out once in a while, but overall I was pretty uninterested. I can see why others might be into this but I will pass.
Interesting songs
I've never been a fan of old randy, and maybe it was because of a hilarious family guy bit making fun of him but it was an accurate bit because he kind of sounds like he has a little jello in his voice. Not my style.
Not for me
Really just don’t get the appeal here
meh not for me 2
I'm not sure if it's Newman's voice or the loungey, easy-going vibe throughout the record, but Sail Away was not an experience I could get into. My appreciation for some of the instrumentation and lyrical themes helped elevate it, but it still failed to stick with me in an endearing way.
bah
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear, Old Man Cutting Edge: Sail Away Overall Notes: Billy Joel if he was in the process of OD'ing on a cocktail of barbiturates at a jazz club
wouldn't really relisten
This was OK, real rating 2.5
A little bit too "variety show" for my liking.
I can only associate Randy with Pixar, so I wasn't overly impressed by this album
While there are some clever lyrics ('Political Science' for example) to be had on the album, the compositional choice for most tracks to be standalone piano ballads or have sparse orchestral backing strands the majority of the LP in uninteresting waters.
Meh
I stopped instantly and went and listened to "You've got a friend in me". Tbh, that's all I could think of when listening to this. May have to go watch Toy Story. I didn't rate the rest of the album.
The songs were quite sweet but I just don't believe he can sing.
Didn't love it.
I can't listen to Randy Newman and not hear toy story, some songs had nice music
I certainly recognized that voice immediately from Toy Story! As for this particular album, it was good as background music, but not probably something I would ever just listen to with any intent.
Never heard of this guy before, loved some of the tracks enough to add them to my favorites. But strangely couldn’t even listen to others. Real mixed bag for me. Kinda sounded like a ‘best of’ album to me in that way and not an album per se. hard to give this one a star rating but I’ll have to give it a go I guess.
Considering I ranked frank sinatra a 3, I feel this should get a 2. It’s nice enough to listen to, but I wouldn’t listen again
Seen Toy Story too many times to take this seriously. Inoffensive.
Ça parrait que Newman compose pour des films. Belle voix, bon piano, il crée de belles ambiances, mais pour moi un 3* est un album que je réécouterais.
It's ok, just not my thing. 5/10.
musique de fond de bar pas du tout entrainante rien pour faire le party je le connais depuis longtemps j'ai rien de lui
Entirely unremarkable music with a cartoon voice.
You got a friend in me... I actually don't like his voice, it is very round, if that makes sense. The lyrics were also just meh. That said I like the feeling I get while listening to the albums.
meh
2.5| Pues es un gran compositor y te transmite el sentimiento exacto, pero que creepy canta "you can leave your hat on", que bueno que Tom Jones la hizo suya. Se le agradece varias canciones de películas y sobre todo lo que hizo para Toy Story.
This album had very few good points with boring music and laughable lyrics however, the song sail away redeems it from being a one star.
Quite nice but nothing amazing
Idk if I can get over “you’ve got a friend in me”
Funner than you’d think, particularly that song about a dream. He’s definitely got a friend in me! ;)
Не знаю хто це. Не виглядає цікаво. Коротше він відомий своїми сатиричними текстами, що для мене, не англомовної людини представляє невелику цінність. В загальному не моє. Навіть не дослухав.
Before starting this album, I was not a fan of Randy Newman. He has a couple songs I like, but overall I was not a fan. After listening to this album, my stance has not changed. He sucks. His lyrics are laughably stupid. The musical accompaniment is competent but simplistic. And did he seriously have a song basically calling for the US to destroy the rest of the world? Family Guy didn’t lampoon him nearly hard enough.
Contains You Can Leave Your Hat On, which is one of the worst songs ever written (and turns out the original is even worse than the Tom Jones cover). The rest was bland but inoffensive.
Pretty horrible to be honest. I was very disappointed to see this cuz i hate this guy's voice and mannerisms. But I was willing to listen. People citing the satire and lyrics, but im sorry thats not enough. The instrumentation is weak and delivery is lackluster
sorry nej.. som ett långt skämt
Did not listen. Could not bear his voice for more than 35 seconds. Shudder.
paso esta lista es una putisima mierda
Not for me. 1/5
goofy man
Yuck. I'm just not a Randy Newman guy I guess
Boring music
Campy show tunes, marginal lyrics and two songs about doom this to the bottom 10% of listens so far.
Ugh, don't like Randy Newman. His voice just drives me up the wall, this is not going to be fun. Damn, this album sucks. I hate Randy Newman so much, listening to this album should be considered cruel and unusual punishment. I ejected on the 8th song which is far longer than I should have lasted, I deserve an award for that.
No...Tosh! Fuck this process; so many weak albums Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Some Revisit ❌️ Crap ★☆☆☆☆ (2/10) Total reviewed : 256 Already owned : 59 Purchased : 14 To buy list : 2 Nope : 181
Really didn't like this one. Just found it boring
I tried to be open-minded about this, but really couldn't stand it at all. Not for me. Sorry Randy!
America and god themed lyrics over a Disney soundtrack... What a waste of lifetime
No randy no
There might be a day when I listen to this album and I get that light bulb moment of why it is so highly regarded, but I doubt it. There's a bit of charm I suppose, but so much of this is so awkward. I liked the opening song, but I quickly tired of the soundtrack style. Songs like Simon Smith... and Old Man just abruptly stop, while Memo To My Son and Let It Shine seem to fade out half way through. You Can Leave Your Hat on is a great song, but not with Randy's nasal style - he sounds bored! It's just so massively unsatisfying and a trawl to get through, even though it's barely 3 quarters of an hour long. 1 star. Next.
I know he’s a legend, considering the Toy story soundtracks, but this album is such a fucking snooze fest
respectfully not listening to this
sail away--oh hmm ok. this is slow. a 2:53 song has never felt so long. lonely at the top--this is a polka vibe, love that. still slow. pokey lafarge has definitely heard this song. he gives us all his love--still slow. jesus song. last night i had a dream--ope there's a single fast beat, back to slow. i need to actually listen to this album for its musicality simon smith and his dancing bear--ahh sad boi circus music? old man--i'm starting to get a temp on randy newman: sad slow emotional music, where the lyrics express a range of emotions across songs but musically, vocally, rhythmically, etc. they all sound the same. political science--ok maybe that's not right; this song is the most upbeat so far. but what in the world is this song??? "boom goes london, boom goes paris..." ah love some good old fashioned cultural american imperialism singing about... nuking everyone???? wait what?!?! burn on--cleveland, ohio, that perennial subject of song and verse. memo to my son-- dayton, ohio--dayton, ohio, that perennial subject of song and verse. you can leave your hat on-- G-d's song (that's why i love mankind)--is this a prayer for G-d to leave people alone? idk 1/5. this album is painfully slow.
One is enough and it’s neither of the two we’ve seen this week.
Short People got no friends, short people got no friends in need...sail away, sail away, sail away..Hoagy Carmichael's got a friend in need..
Wasn't so bothered about it.
This album sounds like it's going to tell me to "cheer up, love, it might never happen".
was fun at times but why are we singing about the us bombing the world
Meh
Tried the second album just to make sure I didn't like him. I don't get the hype. Is he related to someone in Pixar? How did he get that gig?
Sigh... Can someone tell me why anyone likes Randy Newman? His voice is harsh and gravelly, he constantly reaches out of his register, songs are childish (think "Short People") and clearly fit into a British tradition that was old when he started recording in the 1960s. I mean, just listen to the opening bars of "Lonely at the Top" on this album. It's right out of a 1910s London dance hall, and not even the better part of town. Let's talk about his lyrics. They are best when they are simple, such as in the Toy Story song "You've Got a Friend in Me". Otherwise, they are range from the silly to the hopelessly obscure. Newman seems like one of those "artists" that can fool critics and aficionados into thinking that bad music is somehow "art". This album just highlights this.
Sorry Randy this isn’t for me
I've listened to multiple of them, but I really don't care for Randy Newman albums. The songwriting is obviously there and he's had some good successes, but his own performances of songs feel way too lifeless for me. His singing sounds very dull to me and is accompanied by little more than just his Piano. It's hard to really enjoy, there's a lot of songs but all of them just blend into one forgettable soup because of how similar the sound is on all of them. I tend to prefer beat over lyrics and this just has no punch.
Singer-songwriter without the singer and the songwriter. At least it kept me entertained I guess.
Dude sounded like he got shit faced drunk and decided it was a good time to sing. No thanks!
Offensive and exploitative. This album was worse than boring; it was irritating. Randy Newman does not actually sound like that. He changed his vocal style to sound more like black American jazz artists who actually had talent. A shameless rip off which has no place on this list. I know it’s not the 1001 best albums; it’s a list of albums which influenced and inspired. The presence of this album on the list is a travesty and an insult to the music he is copying. A disgrace.
Started strong ended in nap time music
It started off with a really strong four songs, then went completely off the rails. Is this the score to a musical? 1.3 outta 5
Nope. His voice is irritating, I can't hear anything but Toy Story, and the Jesus stuff is not my thing.
To be honest, it is boring. 1
One of the most baffling figures in music history. The musical equivalent of Lenny Bruce - held up as a legend but truly sucks to listen to. Good at the one trick of pairing banal sentimentality with cutting sarcasm for sickly sweet cyncism that, I guess, passes as world weary wisdom. I guess you can see that working for songwriter, but when you have that voice, to release a solo album? I suppose the sheer audacity to step into a recording booth to lay down the vocal tracks is admirable.
This was an absolute slog to get through.
He is so annoying. Good lord
Whoo boy. Maybe it's the result 40 years of soundtracking generic rom-coms and Toy Stories, but I Do Not Need This. These songs do not tickle anything in my spirit.
Not a fan of Randy to be honest
Fuck. I hate this with every fiber of my being. I feel bad for the other musicians who are playing the otherwise decent music underneath. I hope they tracked the music separately so they didn't have to hear repeated takes of the vocals. I can't understand how Randy Newman is remotely appealing to anyone with a modicum of taste. At least the songs were short so it was over with quickly.
Langweilig!
I couldn't care less for this music. It sounds like absolutely nothing in the background. I barely even noticed it was on.
Reminds me of that one friend everyone has who NEVER shuts up. Only Randy sings and noodles on a piano. Just a stream of conciseness no one asked for. This sucks.
Fucking ass lol, sorry, I don't like anything on this
simplemente no es lo mio, mucho disney
Too old timey for me
absolutely grated on my nerves i can’t even
Admire the way he gets Jesus and America into the first few lines but for me this entire album sucks harder than woody and buzz on poppers
His voice idk bout it
Just couldn't get into this one. I think his voice is way too ingrained into my brain as the "disney song guy".
Let's see what we what here... Sounds like Toy Story music. lol. Can't do this this is a god album. lol 1 star.
Flaming heck, this is diabolical. The highlight is an absolutely dreadful song that immediately makes you think of male strippers. There you go. Boring, offensively lazy and drab.
Sail Away sounds like church music by Tom Waits. The only redeeming performance on this album is the song from The Muppet Show.
1/5
I can't pinpoint exactly why I hate this, but I do.
One cannot underestimate just how awful and terrible this album was. This was my first do not finish and I think I skipped half of the songs I did listen to. american (insult) 0/5 stars. gross.
Ehh, not my thing. Don't love the singing style and the backing instrumentals are pretty boring. I think militant atheism doesn't quite work great when it's combined with music this normal and homely
I get storytelling in songs, but the stories here didn't really draw me in, and I didn't 'feel' Randy as an enigmatic performer. This one washed over me without making any great impression.
Hate it, just reminds me of Toy Story
Randall telling me that all Americans are happy and then about how lonely it is at the top feels politically insensitive right now.
Boring. Same song all over with diferent lyrics but mid at best.
Really quite depressing
Very boring album except You Can Leave Your Hat On striptease song. 1.5/5
Okay, it’s okay, it could be better and it could be worse
Meh
Yawn. I couldn't even get through this one.
Very uh I guess like a musical? Like should be an actual musical. Not really my kind of music. Also sounds so much like toy story, dude kinda phoned it in LOL Meh For me, like what I would listen to? 1/5
I hate Randy Newman's singing. Automatic 1 star
I can’t stand Randy Newman. 1 star
You know how some voices for no reason irk you to no end? This is that voice for me.
With some of the albums in this project I don’t personally enjoy them, but I can see why other people would. This isn’t one of those albums.
musically talented for sure. But i didn't really like it.
I was never a Newman fan. Some of his Pixar soundtrack work is listenable, but this isn't!
Ma ograničen sam ko balkon. Dosadno mi sve, nije me pogodio do sad niti jedan album osim onih koje sam već znao Brzim guglanjem sam saznao da je ovaj tip radio glazbu za dosta diznijevih filmova. Figures, tako mu zvuči glazba Nema šanse da ću slušati ovog kvazi Dylana Preskačem sve pjesme do you can leave your hat on, da vidim koliko je bolje to cocker odradio Masu bolje. 1 brate Randy, žao mi je
He's no Bob Dylan but his singing is nearly as bad
Eh? Ugh
Something about Randy Newman singing 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' made me feel queasy.
Randy Newman just sounds like Toy Story to me. This was like an hour of that family guy skit where he "sits there night and day, just singing about what he sees." it's funny for 30 seconds, it's a nightmare for an hour.
What’s with that voice? Like he’s trying to sing like a spoilt-brat-child. Songs are dross too. Zero stars.
Oh dear. I'm confused. I was expecting Randy Crawford (not a good thing). Instead, I get someone who sounds like he should be singing the song from Toy Story. Turns out it is the man who sung the song in Toy Story. I don't mind that song in the context of the film, but all this was a bit wearing, he even managed to make another of his classic songs sound shite, until Tom Jones came along and did the definitive version in The Full Monty (in my opinion). On the whole it is underwhelming and bland. 1 star.
Don’t like it…what is great about it?
Very weak
Nothing enjoyable about this album.
who fronted this guy cash to cut a record? garbage
Kitsch. The single Political Science does not come across as satire and, imo, highlights the "main character" syndrome Americans have. Arrogant af.
Why? I don't get it
How on earth are there 2 Randy Newman albums on the 1001 list? The mind boggles, it's a parody of itself! "Randy Newman, sits there all night and days singing about what he sees."
Randy Newman definitely has his own unique sound, I’ll give him that much. Still, every song just sounds like it is something off of a Disney movie soundtrack.
Easy listening
I love LA! But not this album. Go listen to Joe Cocker's version of you can leave your hat on and you'll be a whole lot happier.
This dudes voice is like listening to that special guy in the street who seems to know everyone. It’s absurd that people enjoy this.
Awful. Polished, disney music
Danke, Randy Newman! ☯️ Wertung: 🤢/5
After listening to two Paul Simon albums, I was convinced that my supposed hatred for singer-songwriter style music was completely unfounded. This broke me. I regret being optimistic.
No.
Motr nonsense . Couldn’t stop thinking about Toy Story.
I like sad songs but this was a hard pass
1/5!
listened to the first 3 songs, not my thing so i tapped out

Not for me…
Not it for me
Look, idk, I'd never listen to this like at any time. It's too dramatic and somehow also not enough.
Not my jam
Not really my thing
Shite
America's favorite lounge singer. His music is okay, but his voice is....not great. I listen to his music and I wonder if he was just biding his time until Disney made him the soundtrack for all of their Pixar movies.
If you’re the guy the likes You’ve Got a Friend In Me way more than anyone reasonably should, you might like this album. Sail Away is more of that kind of sound, but I hesitate to even like that song to begin with. This album is not good. Sure the orchestral/chamber sound of this album is pretty good. It gives the album a unique flair and it sounds objectionably nice. There’s a few guitars in there that switch up the sound but I have a thing for slower and more stripped back tracks (even though I won’t complain for a few rock-laden tracks). However, I will reiterate, this album is DOGSHIT. And it is all because of Randy Newman’s god damn voice. Holy shit, it is unlistenable. And it’s like actually crazy because the lyrics aren’t that bad. Sometimes they are tacky and terrible but, like on the song Political Science (the only track I somewhat liked), they are insightful and witty. But none of that makes any difference when the vocals just suck. The vocals feel so out of place and terrible and I just don’t want to listen to this. The vocals seriously made me want to just go to bed right now. But I persisted and was left with total, agonizing garbage. I never want to listen to Randy Newman’s voice again. I’m giving this a 2/10. Borderline unlistenable.
Appreciate the musicianship but I hated this and unlikely to ever try it again. Dirge
Sail away and keep going. You sound like Billy Joel after a stroke. And asking Woody to ‘just leave his hat on’ is really weird.
While I can appreciate that he is talented, his songs have a depressing nursery rhyme vibe about them.
Nostalgia from Toy Story is the only thing I got from this
I couldn’t make it past the first two songs, I feel like I’m listening to a depressing Disney movie soundtrack
Couldn't stop thinking about Family Guy.
Randy Newman's music is the equivalent of walking down the street and overhearing random people's conversations. Mundane and irrelevant to you. It has no significant bearing on your life and quickly forgettable. Listening to an entire album is the equivalent of waiting in a long line and having to hear the guy behind you carry out the boring details of his life.
not a fan of Randy Newman
Holy jesus fuck, how bloody miserable is this stuff? His Toy Story schtick got old despite the magic, this is just miserable and all a bit samey
Not the Randy I was expecting
Really lame. Can't really get into his style of music or his voice. 1.5/5
Very hokie. Reminded me of toy story
Yuck
Can we get something good please.
I'll pass
Not a fan
Boring af
I’m not a Randy fan, so this was a tough slog. Some great arrangements, but I couldn’t get past Newman and his phrasing.
Sounds like a insanely wayward man jibbering on about nothing. Some woeful lyrics. If there was ever an album that didn’t need bonus tracks….
I thought it was pretty naff throughout, and that the lyrics were just bad, until the last song. But by then I was kind of turned off the whole thing. I did have a chuckle at the tune about bombing anywhere except the US, that one was funny.
Meh
This album made me feel depressed.
1.5
I guess his single Short People soured me on Randy Newman. I simply don’t like his singing style, and this record doesn’t change my mind
Couldn't get into this
Meandering mid rank movie tat
Had to stop early doors - one big toy story song - not for me
This album is horrible. Newman’s lyrics are so bad.
Belle musique de queue, vraiment plate, un chanteur moyen avec un piano Vraiment pas mon style
gross
Hot pile of meh
I like piano and singer songwriters, but there is just so much cynicism and sarcasm, it is NOT appealing.
Was pretty mellow. Should be on this list???
quiero comenzar otra vez aaaaaaaaa
No one like him:)
Yeah, not bad. Bit of a mixed bag and nothing transcendental, but listenable enough.
