Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Showtime style and his singular voice and charm make for standout Randy. Otherwise I felt eh about it

ugh, i already had the other randy newman album two months ago and now this? i went into this one thinking “well, it couldn’t possibly be more boring and racist than good old boys was” but noooooo, mr. newman had to squeeze a racial slur into track one. and it just gets more boring from there. i can’t for the life of me understand why i need to listen to these songs he wrote 20-30 years before he got good at it. this one gets a 2 as well. favorites: dayton ohio 1903, you can leave your hat on

As good as these songs may be lyrically I can’t stand Randy Newman’s voice

Every song quite similar sounding. Lyrically strong but musically repetitive.

BORING

I can't listen to Randy Newman without thinking of that Family Guy bit where he's just singing about things that he sees. The album wasn't enjoyable. It was an artist from the 70s trying to sound like music from the 30s. The songs didn't even seem to go together. It felt like a bunch of songs from a while bunch of musicals or together.

I couldn't get behind this album. Maybe it's a case of the Mondays, maybe it's his voice/songwriting.

I only like Randy Newman when he’s singing about bugs, toys, or LA.

not my vibe but can see why people might like it

Hard to take it seriously. Kinda feels like a neo-noir Pixar film...

I was excited when I thought this was going to be Gary Numan.

I don't got a friend in him.

It is hard to get past the success of Toy Story. This album sounds like a collection of sad Toy Story songs and happy Toy Story songs.

I don't have patience for this guy right now.

I think I'm just grumpy this week.

i mean it was fine, felt quite nostalgic in a way? doesn’t really mean it was good though.

Great Songs: Good Songs: Last Night I Had a Dream, Old Man, Mid Songs: Lonely at the Top, He Gives Us All His Love, Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear, Political Science, Burn On, Memo to My Son, Dayton, Ohio - 1903, You Can Leave Your Hat On, God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) Bad Songs:

This feels harsh, because I like Randy Newman, but I didn't really enjoy this. I like listening to a Randy Newman song, but a full album is too much

Vrij saai. Niet zo'n fijne stem

2+ Stars (6/15)

oh that guy, yes but no

I like Zevon better

Where's all the stuff about Buzz Lightyear and Lightning McQueen? And when did Pixar start making movies about the children of Israel?

Not a big fan of his singing voice. It's all good musically, but an acquired taste I guess. Joe Cocker's version of You can leave your hat on is so much better.

Hard to get into as it's generally quite one paced and difficult to listen to his voice. Interesting lyrically though and also didn't know he did the original of Leave Your Hat On. Suspect it could get up to a 3 if i listened more

This was okay. Not anything astonishing for me. The story telling was good and I enjoyed the mainly piano music. But don’t think I would listen again.

Didn't really enjoy this. Found it plodding and dull. Sub-Bob Dylan easy listening mass market fodder.

Before Toy Story and all the other work on other films later in Randy Newman's career, he was actually seen as quite a respectable Piano Rock musician that knew how to write a good comedic song with the perfect amount of parody sprinkled all over. I wouldn't call Sail Away a remarkable album by any means, but it is a very interesting insight into one of the most wordy musicians of his time and how he works. Personally I didn't mind anything on this album but it feels like it forgets it has 12 songs because some of them are under 2 minutes in total length and just get swallowed by all the bigger tracks around them. This album is pretty forgettable once you finish it up and I really wish there could have been a better Randy Newman album picked that showcases a more memorable tracklist from one of the most unsung heros of the world of music.

Music hall and musical theatre are an obvious influence here, but I think I prefer artists such as Harry Nilsson, Freddy Mercury and Paul McCartney, who also wrote songs in a similar style, better.

Its my fault. All I can hear is Toy Story. I find his voice nasally and his quaint and fuzzy style unpleasant, and then getting hit with 'You can leave your hat on' felt like a hug that goes on inappropriately long with a creepy aunt or uncle.

Not my kind of thing

I was expecting worse.

Len Houmous once famously said on Jools Holland….’Randy Newman? I wish he would sail away’. His timing was terrible. He was meant to say it to Ken Chutney quietly during Jamie Cullem’s set. Jamie went quiet, Len was heard around the world! That’s the problem with Jazz, very unpredictable! 1.7 13/17 Let It Shine

i cant take it

Even with a Dayton song, I'm not listening to this on purpose.

Great songwriter but Disney has ruined his voice for me. Felt like a Disney soundtrack but I did like a few songs. Wouldn't mind other artists covering these songs 👀

Randy wants to bomb the rest of the world lol (Political Science). Expect Australia. Dude, what the hell. The piano was strong in this one.

Kinda corny, but nothing offensive here. Its aight

Never was a huge fan of his...good social commentary but can't listen for long stretches!!

Some songs that feel like they could be great. But can't past that hurdy gurdy, dumb dumb voice

Not as bad as the auricular torture found in his endless soundtracks for Disney/Pixar (I hope I die before I hear 'You Got a Friend in Me' again) movies but still a ways away from being anything but sometimes cutesy novelty songs that sound very similar to each other. I'm giving 'Sail Away' two stars (out of five) because when I saw that it was today's album I felt slightly nauseated at the thought of a full album of 'You Got a Friend in Me' stuff and was really happy that it wasn't. Also, I enjoyed Ry Cooder's slide guitar on a couple of numbers and the song 'It's Lonely at the Top' a song originally written for Frank Sinatra but never recorded by the chairman of the board was not without its Hoagy Carmichael-esq charms.

Rubbish Toy Story man

Never really enjoyed this guy. I kinda feel like he has a learning disability, producing music and lyrics that are childish and theatrical. He’s found success there, probably with a ton of help. Can’t help being reminded of my kids’ second grade music recitals, ie a bunch of retards blowing on recorders for adoring parents. Good times.

It was good, but dull

Somehow... these songs did not age well.. and I hate the honky-tonk music!

His campy delivery has never made me want to listen to him. There's music here, I just don't really care for it.

Very relaxed listen, but gets anoyning after a 2nd or 3rd listen.

Sail Away from me Randy Newman. Your mealy-mouthed character studies do nothing for me. Tinkle forth on your piano to someone that will enjoy it more than me.. Oh hey, it's the song from Major League. That one is okay.

There are a few amusing or decent tunes here & there, but the whimsical musings of Randy Newman have never connected with me.

Pretty high 2 to pretty low 3. Feel like I could get into it, but wasn't feeling it on first listen

Boring. Not interesting from musical perspective. Maybe it has more value i one listens more carefully to lyrics

All I can hear is him about to sing “you’ve got a friend in me” but he never does. Boring folk otherwise.

With how blah this album was, I'm floored Disney even gave this guy a chance to do songs for their movies. His work for Disney was great, whatever this is.... not so much.

There are only two decent songs from Randy Newman and neither are on this album.

TIL "You can leave your hat on" is from this guy and not Joe Cocker. This version does sound way softer and I don't like it as much. Some songs on the album are a bit boring.

Well, musically it’s not a bad album when it comes to theatrical baroque pop, but I just don’t like Randy Newman or everything he represents.

Great songwriter, especiallyfor other people. And I actually dig his voice. But he's mean & resentful & cruel in so many of his songs.

Wenn er seine Songs nicht selber singen würde, wäre das ne schöne Platte geworden :-D

Rubbish

Cheesy and repetitive- just as I expected from randy newman.

It's fine as a genre album, but not something I care to listen to

The first thing that strikes me is that this isn't an album, it is a collection of songs. There is no structure. It's a selection of tracks best described as 'show tunes'. Most sound as though they would be more at home in musical theatre than on a pop/rock album. The final nail in the coffin is that I really don't like Randy Newman's voice. A generous 2/5.

Was not expecting him to be on here. Also was not expecting him to sound the exact same 20 years later as he does in Toy Story which just makes it a little bit hard to take him seriously. Also what was up with some of those lyrics. I was kinda half listening at one point and then I was like, wait, what did he say?? Interesting.

This is an album by Randy Newman.

Why does he sing like that? Did the poor man suffer a stroke or something? This album did not have a friend in me.

Ok 2/5

Maybe the Toy Story films have ruined Randy Newman for me, because these kind of sound like variations on "You've Got a Friend in Me." I know they aren't really, but they aren't grabbier or more interesting than that, either.

Many weeks ago, we reviewed Randy’s album Good Old Boys. There was a lot of jarring content on that one, but I tried very hard to engage with the album on its own terms, which was an interesting and thought-provoking exercise. This time around, I’ve run out of patience for his schtick. Sail Away opens with the title track, a pitch-black satire that just doesn’t land right in 2025. I was surprised to find he did this on more than one album. I kind of thought Good Old Boys was a contained project. But listening to his song Political Science, I’m like, was this his whole thing? Is all his pre-Toy Story material like this? I don’t need to find out. It’s exhausting.

I really didn't need anymore Randy Newman. There's something so American about this album. In this moment, I really want to think less about that damn country. I find myself constantly consumed by their current political situation. The last thing I need is for the state of America to seep into the music I'm listening to. And this album dragged me kicking and screaming into America's shit. There are songs about American history, American exceptionalism, American Imperialism and the most American thing of all, God. I just can't engage with this album right now. It brought me down. I guess the warm piano ballad vibe was solid? I guess the track about bombing everyone was cute in a the world is fucked and America will never change because this song was writtten in 1972 and they're still bombing people in the year of our lord 2025 kind of way. Maybe someday i'll be able to appreciate this thing, but not now, not today. This is album is a generous 2.

This would be your favourite album if you were 75.

I don't think I've been more disappointed in this list than when listening to Sail Away. Not at all because Randy Newman is a bad singer or songwriter, but rather, it's because this feels like such an OK album. I usually give each album a fair shot by listening to it twice, once for first impressions and another to really analyze the lyrics, but this is genuinely the first time I've tried putting off my relisten before finally biting the bullet on it. Half of the instrumentals on this album feels either somewhat dated or doesn't have enough of a hook to keep me invested for the whole runtime, which is baffling to say to an Orchestral Pop album. The lyrics on the otherhand can be so damn impactful and are by far the best part of the 30 minute runtime. Political Science is possibly the best song on the tracklist as a result, being tongue-in-cheek about how much of an ego the USA has, while also being pretty damn catchy. The best I can say is that this album sounds nostalgic, even on its first listen. However, that feeling can only get you so far, and it results in an album that was practically made for me to not think too fondly of.

чел написал кучу саундтреков к пиксаровским мультикам и оно и слышно. но в рамках альбома как-то неинтересно совсем, скучно. не дослушала

There's really only so much of this I can take.

Randy Newman, of “Short People” infamy. He’s Elton John without the talent. Ok, that might be a bit harsh—his piano and voice are competent. His songs bug though. I like “You Can Leave Your Hat On” for the kink element. That’s about it.

Relatively enjoyable, but very little variation between tracks. All a variation on a theme.

424/1001

This seemed like the musical version of Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. Lots of clever rhymes. Did not enjoy any of it.

OK, so the good think about 1001Album is it gets me to listen to albums I wouldn't normally listen to...and that's led me to some refreshing new artists. And it made me listen to Randy Newman for the time (knowingly.) Very quickly, I saw the usual formula in his compositions....and it just bores me. It was struggle to get to the end. Bland and trite.

me quedé indiferente

Kind of eh, better than the previous one I listened to but think he should probably stick to pixar sound tracks

I usually defend the picks on this list, but WTF? Based on the music alone, I cannot see how this album is important or interesting. At least it isn't for me. If a musician sells out to Hollywood and millions, it doesn't mean that we should lick their shoes. In fact, I feel oppositely. Yes there are some interesting lyrics, but that really isn't enough to carry this album for me. Everything was okay, nothing made me pause and think that I needed to just listen. I call BS on people saying that this was influential to later music. I just don't see it

Toy Story man can only ever sound like Toy Story to me.

Not my vibe but it was ok.

meh. It didn't do anything for me; no song really moved me or caught my attention. There are some nice arrangements and cool piano parts in some songs. 2/5

This is a nicely made album but nothing was memorable for me and it kinda bored me from start to finish.

I don't know...I guess this was kind of enjoyable? But nothing that stuck with me and no songs I wanted to revisit.

I like Zevon better

Not my thing... I liked the title track Sail Away best

This feels like the album that made Family Guy make fun of him.

objectively it’s good but it didn’t stick out to me. most of the songs just kinda phased by for me

Some good tracks but awful voice

Did not resonate with me at all......why is it on the list

No strong feelings on this one - it's not unpleasant and at times feels emotional, sentimental about his own life and history in a way that I quite like. But no songs massively stand out to me - would happily give it a 5/10 so will give it a 2(.5)

3.5/10

24/1001 Randy Newman - Sail Away Heard before? ❎ Listen again? ❎ At first I thought yeah this is ok, bluesy kinda voice and some decent arrangements. Then it turned more and more into an amalgamation of the aforementioned bluesy stuff with show tunes bent and I was out.

Nope. I mean it's not without merit (like some nice piano playing) but it's very much not my sort of thing. Just uninspiring to me, musically. Apparently, he's quite satirical, but as I was failing to engage with the music or his voice, I was disinclined to consider the lyrics properly. Sorry Randy.

Bloody awful. Can't seperate his voice from show tunes.

Meh. It’s fine, nothing remarkable, but I didn’t hate myself for listening to it. I kind of like Newman’s voice, but I found the songs themselves to be pretty boring.

this was really boring

Horrible vocals which ruin any potential enjoyment I’d otherwise have from the songs. Not that I think I’d like the cabaret-sounding songs with a better singer. Don’t see the greatness in this at all. No favourite songs

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

Don't hate it, don't love it either. Kind meh. His voice is unique but I don't really need a full album of it.

That voice is bonkers and he kind of reeks of "I have a Black friend"

Normally, I enjoy Randy Newman, but this album is just a drag. It has one of the most uninspired, lifeless renditions of "You Can Leave Your Hat On" that I've ever heard.

I vibed with the instrumentals but I found Newman's voice soooooo annoying that I just couldn't get into it. Also, very disconcerting to hear You Can Leave Your Hat On in this context, what do you MEAN the Tom Jones version is a cover??

Late evening stuff. Solid tracks, but nothing special.

Hard to get over his voice being so synonymous with Toy Story in the first song. After that their are some interesting songs in topics, however I suspect I would find more to connect with in later albums.

Not for me, occational moments I liked. But also... there was a tuba and I couldn't get over it being Randy Newman's voice.

Soft 2/5. Occasional satire without interesting opinions. Schmultzy laid back style.

I like this guy in small doses. Clearly a talented songwriter, with songs covered by other artists.

Doesn’t do much for me at all, though I can see the appeal.

I couldn't listen to this without thinking of him as being the Disney guy

# 506 : Sail Away Good background music, if you're writing a kids movie… Favourite Track: None Listened: 19/06/2025

2.1 super boring

Okay for background music, but not something I'll listen to again.

Kinda sounds like a drunk guy at an open-mic night. But I also can't stop thinking about the Family Guy skit about him signing about everything he sees... and honestly it just makes listening to his music so much harder, haha.

I put this off for so long and I regret nothing. 1.5

A few classic songs, and some interesting delivery.

Wow, the tonal dissonance on this album is something else. I knew that Randy Newman had a thing for mawkish tearjerkers on film soundtracks, but I really wasn’t expecting the opening track on this to be about the slave trade. Yikes. We then crash zoom into a cabaret style song about a jaded and debauched star, followed by a supernatural number and then one about a dancing bear. Wait, what? We also get a cheery number about starting a nuclear war for the fun of it.

I probably don't care enough about the lyrics (that the perks of not being a native speaker) to love or hate this. It's mildly interesting, I wasn't blown away by it. I guess it belongs to this list because of the original version of You can leave your hat on? anyway.

Having heard the other Ramdy album, there is no need for this one too

How in the fuck are there two Randy Newman albums on this list? Nothing like listening to a dude who sounds drunk and thinks he’s witty play safe, old timey music.

His voice was hard to swallow through an entire album.. 2+

Weird, whiny orchestral Pop, which only might be bearably at a dive bar, or lounge, complete with spirits and smokes.

Toy Story guy, lyrics are kinda corny (especially on title track), yeah no I don’t like it

Multiple albums from Randy Newman does not seem necessary

I tried, not my jam.

4/17/2025: Music isn't bad, but I can't get over his voice.

this wasn’t enough to make me get over my issues with Randy Newman…. close, but no

I like Randy Newman music in movies, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ for example is a true classic but listening to an album of his music is pretty repetitive.

I don’t know. I honestly think Newman’s lyrics are great. But I veer wildly as to whether I’m enjoying a song or not. So I’m either all in or all out. Too much whiplash for me. 2.5/5

I played this album of nice well-crafted songs a couple of times, but really didn't think it a *great* album. It's just not my thing.

At some point in life Mr. Lin-Manual Miranda must have gain many inspiration in Newman's sing, which obviously...didn't end well. Still, they did sound similar! Come on, don't deny it! It's so distracting I'm not even listening to.the music sometimes. Sorry, but a 2.5/5 is all I have in hand. Old Broadway tunes.

Was nice and quick but they all sounded the same

I really tried but every song just made me think of toy story and I couldn’t get past it.

I found this boring and uninteresting. Yes, it sounds like a Disney soundtrack, but for me, that doesn't justify it. Not for me.

Stick to the movies

It’s all familiar yet I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before.

Cool. I wanted to listen to an album that made me feel like I was in a Pixar movie. Decent though

As with his other album on this list, I really don’t know what excactly to think of it. It’s okay, but also kind of boring, or at least a little “off”.

You've got a friend in me was all I could think about

In a nutshell: satirical Dr Seuss. Randy Newman is a little like Leonard Cohen - a fantastic songwriter with a horrible singing voice. But compared to Cohen somehow Randy's voice has barely aged between this album and recording the theme for Toy Story in 1995. In context of the 1970s, Sail Away is an evolution of orchestral pop. It's removed from the likes of Henri Mancini and Bobby Darin. Arranged beautifully, lyrically dark. The album is a smidge over 30 minutes. Randy's voice is what is stopping me from giving this album a higher rating. Overall: 4/10

2.5 поради Sail Away ....Се друго е под просек :)

so mid. every song uses the same formula. just lullaby melody piano intros followed by boring vocals. like for god’s sake can you do something interesting for once. at least it’s still bearable

omgg niin omaleimainen artisti.. artistilla on oma leima ymmärtää heti että oook. reino uusimies.. en tykännyt tästä kovinkaan paljon vähän ehkä kyllästyin tähän schtikkiin.. schtikki meni vähän nyt överiksi.. oot nii vitun pimee. mut ei se mitää. kaljaa suuhun kaljaa alas masuun litroja litroja. sitten tupakalle smuuh smuuh.. ääni kuuluu vaan smuuh smuuh kun imeskelee tupakantumppia.. tupakka jo kauan aikaa sitten palanut pois.. tumppia imeskellään. tupakantumppi grind kun maksaa liikaa prkl meni verottaa tupakkia. miksi tupakkia mentiin verottaa niin pirkuleesti nyt tupakantumppia nuollaan. sail away

Hey, I know the Dancing Bear song from when Scooter and Fozzie performed it on The Muppet Show. And I prefer that version. I don't mind a Randy Newman song now and then, but a whole album of them wears out its welcome before it's over.

I don't know much about Randy Newman apart from his big hits (Short People and I Love L.A.) and movie tunes. This album is exactly what I thought it would be, distinctly Randy Newman, and basically a soundtrack for every family drama from 1968 to 1985. It isn't bad music, it just isn't my cup of tea.

It is possible to be interesting musically and lyrically while making a political and societal statement. This album does not do that for me. His lyrics are clearly very sarcastic, but he bashes that sarcasm over your head with a comically oversized mallet. I liked Political Science.

2.5 i really didnt care too much about it

This album is just ok. I don’t think Randy Newman is really my jam. He has some songs that are pretty decent, but he’s a little too quirky for me I think. Even though some of his subject matter is actually quite serious, it still has kind of a corny, show tune-y vibe for me.

Cinematic production, but Newman's voice is too much to bear.

His piano skills are excellent, but his voice/singing style drives me nuts (in a bad way). Some songs are ridiculous, some have very poignant lyrics.

Political Science was a great tongue in cheek fun song about mass genocide and there's a couple others I enjoyed but on the whole....just put the Toy Story in the bag bro

Handful of songs that are alright. Really not my thing

Randy Newman is een beetje hit-or-miss voor mij. Klinkt op sommige platen echt te veel als de Toy Story muziek. Dit album was m net niet voor mij.

I really hate this, but I can appreciate how someone could love it for all the things I can’t stand: the irony and sarcasm of the lyrics, the wretched strings and silly horns, not to mention one of the worst voices in the business. Ostensibly it’s offbeat and old-times and not designed to be taken too seriously, but it just makes me nauseous.

It's a jungle out there

Nice background music. Didn't leave much of an impression.

Not a very engaging singer, in my opinion. The songs are fine.

Don't really enjoy Randy Newman much, and this isn't doing much to change that

Droll irony is a shtick that gets a old if there's nothing else to back it up. And while I don't hate his voice, the compositions are rather slight. The Kinks did this kind of thing way better.

Bo-ring.

This album was not terrible. I got through most of the tracks. It loses a star from me for all the god mentions.

Andra plattan med honom. Första var väl okej men den andra suger.

Not bad per se, but there aren't many standout tracks/moments. Just kept wanting him to sing his pixar songs.

You can leave your hat on?!

After taking up a residency as the musical mascot for Disney animated franchises he has been known as a crusty but affable buddy. Entirely wholesome and inoffensive. Going back to 1972 for this record it is indeed pleasant and inoffensive, like the soundtrack to puppies wrestling with kittens on a fluffy feather blanket. As for myself I would tend to slip into psychosis after encountering and failing to escape from such inert exhibition.

Left foot right foot left foot right foot

I can only hear his You've got a friend in me' when hearing his voice. Decent enough but nothing to have me coming back for more

music for pixar cartoons. Bit slow for me

I find sarcasm works well in short bursts. Short People, for example, a great insight by Randy Newman. Musically its appropriate for the lyrical themes but you have to be in the mood for it.

I don’t get the love. Average at best

I feel bad rating this kind of low, as I feel like I was distracted, talking over it the whole time. But, frankly, I don't know if this is worth a revisit. First off, I know what Randy Newman sounds like, so that aspect is covered, and two, it kind of is the same thing the whole album. There's minor differences, but not enough to comment on, and that leaves it feeling kind of bland. I respect Newman, and this isn't bad, but I see no reason to return to it.

I like a few Randy Newman songs, but this is the first time I have listened to 12 Randy Newman songs in a row. It is a pretty big ask. Fortunately most of the songs clock in at less than three minutes.

alright, some of the songs werent my kind of thing, but others had a nice funky sound.

I just can't do his voice. Maybe it's the Toy Story link, but it feels like a kids album. His voice is not a good singing voice at all, and not in an interesting way like Morrissey or a lot of metal, just in a lazy soft way. I'm amazing this has made the list And now reading the wiki on it, the critical acclaim bit is madness. Are you sure Spotify has the correct album?

A disappointing snoozefest

Not for me

Not for me

I don’t think this album is for me

Better than I expected but didn't do anything for me.

I do not like Randy Newman. Short People is a banger though!

yet another album with every song sounding the same. randy newman gonna randy newman, i guess. at least this one doesn’t have gratuitous use of the “n word”, so there’s that.

Just had one of his albums last week. One was enough.

Great songwriter. Less of a compelling performer.

Randy Newman's success is an enigma. But at least we got the Toy Story theme song from it.

Almost every song sounds like the theme tune to Toy Story!

It was ok

Very mellow and enjoyable

Eh. Randy's distinct voice works for a Toy Story soundtrack, but I don't want to listen to an album of his for pleasure. The sounds are quick and similar and don't offer a whole lot. I don't hate the songs but I also don't feel a need to listen ever again. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Fulgte visst ikkje med her heller. Blei litt skremt når You can leave your hat on kom på

kept thinking i was listening to a disney soundtrack😭 lowkey had to skip a lot just because i wasnt in the vibe… also rating this a 2, not necessarily because it’s bad, but just not my favorite style

Too many parodies of Randy Newman songs make it nigh impossible to enjoy Randy Newman directly.

No denying that he's a good songwriter, but there's not enough variation in tone here to keep my interest, and I don't particularly like his voice.

Sail away to sleepy time slumber land.

I appreciate what this man did for Toy Story but this album was kind of boring. Also, why is a guy from Los Angeles obsessed with singing about Ohio?

It's fine. His vocals are surprisingly imperfect in quite a lot of places. Not sure if I find that charming.

Zeer boring

I'm not gonna lie, I was hoping it would start with that song that goes, "Sail away, sail away sail away sail away." Y'all know what I'm talking about?

Not a fan of his singing. Also quite boring.

Randy Newman makes good songs for movies and specific situations, but they're weird as an album.

A second Randy Newman album. This one seems less crude yet still his groggy voice and slow style of music makes this album a snoozer. Overall Newman shouldn’t have one album on this list let alone two. 4.3/10

Family Guy has ruined Randy Newman for me forever. It's so very twee and idiosyncratic.

Just not feeling it, he should just sail away

no puedo escucharlo literal son como canciones d pixar

It's hard to take this guy seriously, perhaps because his music has been parodied so much over the years. I quite frankly did not enjoy this album much.

What a weirdo recording. Not a fan.

I’m not sure who this is for, but it ain’t me.

I had a feeling that I wouldn't enjoy listening to Randy Newman, and I really wasn't wrong. Yikes! Possibly the most nasal vocals I've ever heard. Drab songs that I guess could be called observations if I were being very kind. Dull enough for 2 stars, but not quite bad enough for 1 star.

Exceptionally dull, but not actively bad

Pretty uninteresting. Music for hokey movies.

At least it's economical and gets to the point. But I don't care for his voice and his whimsical takes don't resonate with me.

Boring

#223. This shit was goofy as hell. You'd have to be a very specific type of individual to enjoy this kind of thing, but unfortunately for Randy, I'm just a regular person and there's no way I could get into this. 2/5: wacky

he's gotta be putting on that voice right? Buddy sounds like a cartoon character that just had an anvil fall on their head. Every time I would start to get into it, his voice would take me out.

2 - I don't remember much from listening this album. Maybe a 2 is a bit low, but oh well. Don't care enough to bump it up.

Nicknames are for friends, and Randall Stuart Newman does not have a friend in me. Boring music, self indulgent lyrics about the struggle of being famous, and fantasies about living in rural early 1900s America are enough to put me off. I can't believe that this is the guy who did the soundstracks for multiple Pixar films, films I loved as a child and still do to this day. Childhood ruined.

I really just can’t get into Randy Newman. His piano playing is pleasant, but his voice is incredibly annoying. Even though he’s been a songwriter for other artists, I just really can’t see his talent the way that others do. He does tend to have solid humor in his work, but he’s much better suited for children’s music like Toy Story than adult-oriented rock.

Clearly an incredibly talented song writer and performer. Just not my thing.

the movie song voice.

Should have stuck to Toy Story. Like a poor man’s Tom Waits

Hell no. 1.66

I kinda hate this Toy Story asshole.

When I was a kid I genuinely believed that Randy Newman was mentally challenged, because of the way he sang. He sounded just like the Down’s syndrome kid down the street. I have never been able to shake this impression of Newman. No matter how well written and composed his music might be, to me he will always be ‘that special needs guy’.

Kinda underwhelming. His voice got annoying

Randy Newman's music has kind of made me hate Randy Newman. I always thought for the most part he just did the nice songs for the Toy Story movies but my god his non-soundtrack music is insufferable. Only reason this is getting 2 stars is because it's not completely unlistenable. Plus I gave his racist "concept" album 2 stars, and this definitely wasn't worse than that (though not much better).

hmmm... surprisingly boring

Songs blend into each other. I don't mind them but didn't set my world on fire and not sure I quite tuned into Randy's voice well enough to capture the depth of the lyrics

Randy Newman just isn't the same when it isn't Toy Story

Toy story singer was pretty good but not my type

So soish

It's actually not that bad but every single song is the same and the racist album was general better outside it being so racist.

Not for me

Having trouble understanding why this is on here when it’s basically just a not-as-good version of Good Old Boys which is also on this list. All the potentially good things about Randy Newman songs (biting lyrics about America of the past and present, beautiful instrumentation, saying the title of the song in one line and repeating it in the next line, etc.) are done better on the other album.

No jaa. Lempeän ja samettisen kuuloista, ihan kutsuvaakin. Jää kuitenkin yllättävän laimeaksi. Kai kaipaisin vähän lisää rockia, tosin miksi sitä olisi tänne tungettu.

Maybe it's because I grew up with the children's movies he sung on but I just can't take this seriously. When I picture the scenarios he is singing about I see Woody and other characters from Toy Story.

Headline: This album is mid. Nothing about this album was necessarily bad about the album aside from the fact that it was insanely boring. I had a hard time being able to follow it. It lacked originality throughout the project as many of the songs just sounded the same. I really like Randy Newman and don't associate him solely with his work with Disney, although that is an important factor. This album just wasn't it though. Again, this wasn't a bad project, it was just not great.

I can respect the musicianship, but I just cannot get into this vaudeville ragtime cabaret sound. Sounds like an old-timey film score. The satire's good but feels somewhat stale 50+ years later, and almost none of it meshes with the instrumentation. Meh.

Wasn't impressed.

I think he was very lucky to have had a song chosen for the Toy Story film. I think his voice and style is so distinctive as to render it dull. Also special mention to least sexy version of “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. No, just no.

Not for me

4.5/10 Highlights: Political Science

these tracks are like one-sided chats that wander without much direction. his songwriting's clever, but it's hard to see its broader influence on music. and honestly, after 'you've got a friend in me', it's tough to take his voice seriously. it's got that New Orleans R&B touch, but overall, it feels more like background music for a film than a gripping album. respect his talent, but it's just not doing it for me. singer-songwriters need to something special for it to click with me as a genre, and randy certainly does not. only bumped up to a 2 because 'you can leave your hat on' is slightly nostalgic to me due to it's fame.

did not like. too mellow. maybe wasnt in the mood

Unremarkable elevator music, with a voice familiar from anyone with kids in the Toy Story era.

Ok. I couldn’t get the Toy Story song to go away though so this colored things

I don't really like Randy Newman's style.

Don't like it. This man and this style have simply been eternally connected with Disney movies. Even though there might reside some quality in there, the whole album doesn't really catch my interest. It all sounds the same, boring, cartoonish, and goofy. Don't really understand why this man is on the list to begin with. I find his voice also pretty annoying. Like don't get me wrong, nothing bad with returning to your childhood, but this just isn't the way for me. Couldn't listen more than once. 3/10

This is disturbingly religious in places, and that's not OK. His voice is annoying. His songwriting is grand. Tom Jones did a better version of "you can leave your hat on".

I really don't like his style. His song writing in pretty formulaic. I'm not a fan of his singing voice. And his lyrics pretty much come across exactly like they made it out on Family Guy. I feel like he Rafi for adults.

Interesting artistically but overall a nightmare to listen to with a few exceptions. Sounds like the score to a movie I don't want to watch.

American Folk, not my cup of tea

I don’t like or hate this.

Total snoozefest

Me ha gustado "Sail away" y en este disco está "You can leave your heat on" que es de Randy Newman pero se la quedó Joe Cocker. Interesante, hay que oírlo para mejorar en cultura musical popular.

- slow piano music, not really my vibe but I respect it - He has an incredible voice - 2.5

- very distinctive voice - whimsical vibe

I liked two songs 'you can keep your hat on' and 'political science' so i give two stars. Maybe he was doing it wrong

I wanted to like this album, but it just didn't vibe with me at all. Obviously, his voice is divisive at the best of times, but I wanted to look past that. However, I felt that there were too many clunky or childish lyrics, and the music itself seemed juvenile. It really did feel like a "My First Singer Songwriter" type of deal, rather than a definitive album.

Kind of like Frank Sinatra lite.

This album will come in handy once my insomnia starts acting up again. I can't take this guy's music seriously. I keep expecting "You've Got A Friend In Me" to start playing.

The music was nice, but the vocals were off-putting.

I just wrote for “Good Old Boys” that a full album of Randy Newman is too much Randy for me. And that’s the case on “Sail Away” too. But it’s interesting to see how much farther his career in film goes than I realized. I may not like Newman in straight album format, but his accolades for scores and original songs for film are well deserved and impactful.

The best thing about this album is that it reminded me to go re-watch Major League.

I enjoyed the first two songs so I thought this was going to be a better album for me than the last Randy Newman one that come up on this list, but I was wrong. His vocal style just doesn't work for me outside of animated movies, especially when you listen to songs back to back in an album

I just can’t. I can’t listen to Randy Newman’s voice. I can see how the songs themselves are good but I hear him and nothing but Toy Story fills my mind 3/10

Some artists have generic voices. But Randy Newman is the only person with a Randy Newman voice. I can’t decide where it sits in the scale from pleasant to unpleasant. I don’t think I would ever sit down and think to myself, “yeah, I’m in the mood for some Randy Newman.”

Toy Story 17

Apart from "Lonely At The Top", the extraordinary "Political Science", and closer "God's Song", the satire quickly wears thin on all the other tracks. Or it sounds very *thick* instead, depending on the subject matter at hand and the way Randy Newman laughs about it. Musically, there are a handful of good songs ("Last Night I Had A Dream", the delicate "Burn On" , "You Can Leave Your Hat On"--of Joe Cocker fame--and maybe the title track opening the proceedings). But that group of tunes is not necessarily the one that can boast having the best lyrics though. In other words, it seems like something is always missing in this full-length release... Under that light I'm not including this record in my own list. I'm glad it helped Brian Wilson to get through one of his infamous bouts with depression. I tend to interpret this interesting anecdote as ultimately showing how fragile Wilson's mental state was--given that many parts of this album are actually pretty f*cking hopeless and sinister. But this here isn't why I'm rejecting this LP as an "essential" one. I'm only rejecting it because Randy Newman's usual little tricks already sounded a bit tired by 1972. Later *Good Old Boys* was a bit more mordant. And that eponymous album a couple of years before *Sail Away* had a clearer focus at least. So maybe they're better entry points into Newman's oeuvre, as different as they are... Besides, who in 2023 really thinks there should be *three* frigging Randy Newman LPs in a list of the best albums of all time? Who? Especially when you need room for the likes of Coltrane or Mingus, as another reviewer has aptly pointed out on this app? Or room for relatively newer stuff that already has all the earmarks of a masterpiece? There's not even a single Big Thief album in Dimery's updated list! Jeeze, if you want to understand how you can combine stellar songwriting with terrific musical compositions, that's the way to go. I'm sorry, but as "smart" and "pert" as he is, Randy Newman doesn't have the stellar chops of an Adrienne Lenker. "Quaint" and "trite" can find their way into such a list. But they can't let one single artist take up three slots all by himself. Not by a long shot. 2/5 for the purposes of this list. Which translates to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5+2). Next please. Number of albums left to review: 495 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 239 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 115 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 148 (including this one)

Most songs on this album are very short wich means that it is hard for them to get stuck in your head. It feels like the songs vanish the moment the next one starts. Exceptions are the title track, Last Night I Had a Dream and You Can Leave Your Hat On. A lot of them are also not very good written and downright boring! Especially Political Science does NOT fit on the album. This is not a song that belongs on this record. It doesn't fit the vibe/feeling of the album. 2/5

Feel more like he's a parody or novelty performer. 2

Alsjeblieft, Randy, dit is gewoon echt niet goed te praten.

Ik kan hier met moeite m'n ogen bij open houden....🥱

this ain't no Pixar soundtrack

I cannot deny the wit/braininess on display here, it's just that I find the music boring.

I don't need an entire Randy Newman album. The entire time I was just thinking about how Buzz Lightyear finally learned that he couldn't really fly.

The only time I’m going to think about this album is when I think about Max thinking about this album. I’m sorry man, but not all of us can be culturally astute like you.

This album did not have a friend in me. In fact it barely made my acquaintance. My relationship with this album can be best described as one of those half nods you give to other dudes on the street when you awkwardly make eye contact. Uncomfortable, but not the most uncomfortable thing in the world.

Recognizable and unique voice, but it is so so dinner theatre.

It seems harsh to rate a childhood icon so poorly, but I find it hard to imagine I'd ever listen to this album again. For some reason, it reminds me of that scene in Billy Madison where he calls Steve Buscemi, and Steve is holding a gun while putting on lipstick and listening to some easy-going doo-wop. This feels like the album I'd be listening to if I were to be putting on lipstick while holding a gun (for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzYeDm1Vpxs) I did give it two stars (not one) because I feel like some of these songs would be fun to sing with friends while playing piano, and they had a bit of a feel-good American innocence vibe (too bad most people wouldn't know them). I also found "Last Night I Had a Dream" to be kinda fun and funky, and "Memo to my son" got me teared up a bit (but not enough for three stars).

I feel like the concept of Randy Newman is more interesting than actual Randy Newman.

Tja. Mh. Recht generisch, weiß nicht, was das hier soll.

Pop agradável, mas nada marcante.

meh, not a big fan of this kinda orchestral pop. Sounds like a cheesy film soundtrack

Not a fan.
