Reviews (page 5 of 7)
i dunno singe songwriter, didnt care much, wasnt bad NNN
He's a talented songwriter, but a lot of the songs are almost like whimsical 'ditties" The only song above 3 stars was 'last night I had a dream' I'd put it on again, but more just as background music. 3 star
I went in fully thinking "haha funny toy story man" but no, this was a surprisingly engaging singer-songwriter album. It won't be a playlist boon, but I'll definitely be coming back to it when I'm in the mood. The opening title track is probably my favorite.
There's no question that he's a fabulous songwriter with a hugely impressive body of work but I can't help thinking he should stick to the one thing at which he truly excels because he's a mediocre singer at best & everything good on here has been performed far better by others
I don’t think I was listening close enough to get the nuance in his lyrics but I love his tonality and voice. Overall a good listen but doesn’t stand out to me.
While it wasn't bad, it was too much Randy Newman.
I was bracing myself for it to be bad, but it was ok
Love his voice
I was familiar with Randy Newman with his song from the movie Toy Story, but I had not heard anything from this album before. I would say this is a bit of an acquired taste. It's primarily Randy's singing and piano accompaniment, with more instrumentation filling in on certain songs. I like Lonely At The Top but the other songs pretty much leave me wanting more. Not sure I would come back to this one.
Pretty good, fun listen. Took me too long to realize it’s the dude that sang the Monk theme song.
Favourite song - You can leave your hat on
- all i can hear is you’ve got a friend in me
Randy Newman just sounds like such a goober - but in a good beloved way. Enjoyed the listen
Randy Newman is in a category of 1. I think his best songs are the ones where he says the quiet part out loud. Writing in the first person of a particularly kind of person singing their inner and intrusive thoughts.
Pixar’s fave wordsmith is at it again
If we had half stars this would be 3.5. This one really surprised me. He’s got a distinct style of writing that people might call simple, but man there are themes there. Last Night I Had a Dream I could squint and see Tom Waits. A few misses but lots of hits. Also - 22 academy award nominations for score writing and boy you can tell. Every song seems written like it’s a scene in a movie. Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would.
He's got nice songs I just can only hear toy story
A bit slow for my taste, but the guy has a charm and an unmistakable voice that's easy to listen to.
That's Why I Love Mankind)").
Very meh... One number everyone knows, a few good ones, a lot of forgettable ones...
I can guarantee almost everybody has heard Randy Newman at one point in their life, whether they realized it or not. Even I was surprised to learn he was the guy behind You’ve Got a Friend in Me. But at the same time, I feel like I knew that at one point and just forgot. But it’s cool to see him included on this list, because I wasn’t aware of any of the actual music he made. In the span of about 20 years, he went from a regular songwriter and composer to the mind behind the scores of some of Disney’s most massively successful animated movies, and then some. It’s pretty impressive. But really, if you listen to his most popular work, the sound you hear on those isn’t too far off from what this sounds like. Just lots of soft jazz influenced pieces of orchestrated piano rock. Where this album excels at the best is either when it is at its most involved, and there are more parts playing at the same time. Or when it is the most stripped back. Often times this is just Randy playing the piano and singing. And this combination is really lovely. Randy’s got a great voice. Explains why that Toy Story song has remained such a nostalgic classic for so many after all this time. I don’t really know what this album is essential to, if anything at all. But it’s a decent time, and rather short, so there isn’t a ton for me to complain about. Rating: 6/10
Randy Newman produced an album called 'Sonny and Brownie' by two veteran blues men, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee. The album is a masterpiece and not on this list. Their version of Sail Away is definitive and devastating. Listen to it now. This album is good, his voice is limited, but it's about the lyrics and music. Old Man is a horror. Political Science seems like a good idea. 3.5*
Randy Newman writes those ditties that he writes with a distintive style. This is an early glimpse into what's coming later in his career (even before "Short People"!)
Great songwriting
2.9/5 Best Track: Dayton, Ohio - 1903
I don’t know how any it through an album of someone singing in that voice
These days, I do appreciate the number of people who just misinterpret Randy Newman so much (no concept of satire). I want to like more of his songs, but his older stuff (this album) makes him sound nasty to the point of misanthropy. Then, when he tries to sound sincere, it’s impossible to believe it.
Don't let the camp of Randy get in the way of this album. The emotions are there. This is a better listen looking out the window with a drink. Technically 3.5 stars.
Great story teller through song.
Never listened to an album by Randy Newman before, although I of course (who does not?) knew a few of his songs. Guess this is one of oh so many nice albums out there, which I think are ok, maybe even good, but which I will never search out for listening.
good instrumentals
Dayton, Ohio
This was fine
Hahmoilla olisi enemmänkin sanottavaa kuin jaksan kuunnella. Musiikillisesti osaan nykyään samaistua New Orleans/Dixieland-rakenteisiin, joten homma toimii.
Nice and compact album, extremely American, but with an original vocal by Randy Newman. It wasn't as boring as I would have thought, but ultimately I will forget everything about this record in few hours. Pretty nicely spent time though.
Mjög fín!!
Classic singer songwriter- 2 excellent songs you will recognize and the rest are easy to listen.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this album but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I like the subversive lyrics, the piano music, and yes, even the scratchy voice. I'm giving it a 3 but make that a high 3.
Sail Away.
Not bad. Gets bland at times but deep lyrics.
It's kind of funny to realize that Randy Newman already sounded both old and old-fashioned in the early 70's. That said, it's definitely not bad music, although the arrangements are a bit sparse for my taste. Fine for background listening.
Bang average
Standouts- "Sail Away," "Lonely At The Top," "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind," Lyrics/Vocals -2/5 (lyrics great, vocals not so much) Instrumentals- 4/5 Vibes- 3/5 Overall- 3/5 This album was weird, to put it simply. Randy Newman is often times associated with Disney, and truthfully I can see why he's made so many songs for Disney. His music just has that feeling to it. It was by no means a bad thing, but it does I feel detract from the album itself when you're constantly thinking of Toy Story while listening to this album. The album felt humorous in many ways and I could sense some satire in some of the songs on it, but if you can't get past the "Disney vibes" then this will be lost on you. I think overall this album was okay. It was fun, but I wouldn't consider it one of the best albums of all time.
good
Beautiful songwriting and arrangements. WEIRD songs. Very good.
Songs of hope, "Burn On" nicely satirical, a pretty good album.
Still not really into Randy. But this one was more of a 2.5 for me so I'll be generous and round up
So if you can get past hearing a Disney song in most of the songs the album is not bad. If I had heard the album before Monk and Disney I think I would have enjoyed it more. Every artist has a music and singing style but with Randy Newman and how popular and overplayed his more recent songs have been it’s really hard to get past it.
It's brilliant lyrically but a bit boring musically. C'est tout.
This is Randy Newman in his prime.
Randy Newman has a very recognisable sound, which isn't a bad thing, but that does mean that every time I hear Newman I instantly think of toy story 😅
Newman is a very clever songwriter, so perhaps the fact that I was unable to offer this album my undivided attention during this listen (and as a result, assuredly missed several witty lyrics) led to my apathy. But this sort of went in one ear and out the other. Newman has never been a favorite of mine; his singing style just isn't for me. His arrangements are typically very strong, though, and what I heard here was well-crafted, but borderline dreary. I won't go so far as to say I disliked this (mercifully short) listen, but I'm not sure it'll stick with me.
idk if ill finish this but sail away- yeah ummm classic randy. 4 ig lonely at the top- i like the horns. i like how hes sad. 7 he gives us all his love- oh is this about god or whatever. i thought it was gonna be about an absentee dad. dunno why. guess i should just make my own music. 3 or 4 boring last night i had a dream- the keys are nice. DREAM ON DREAM OONN. its ok 6 simon smith and the dancing bear- i like how he has a dancing bear. 5. itd be a four but he gets points for writing about a dancing bear old man- me. oh he got dementia. or hes dead. or dying. ok. 4 ig political science- its nice but its wack. i hate the way i talk. anyway. i like the music and i like blowing up london. sorry. 7 burn on- i like this. cleveland is the city of magic???? 5 or 6 memo to my son- i like him hating on his son. its kind of cute. 6 dayton ohio 1903- enough about ohio. 4 you can leave your hat on- boring 3 gods song- boring too sorry god. 3 let it shine- let it grow. i think i said that before. it basically is let it grow though omg. umm 2 or 3 maybe im doing it wrong- maybe. um yeah its whatever 3 or 4 dayton ohio- i dont wanna listen to this again dude. i still dont give a fuck. 3 for making me do it again you can leave your hat on- i dont careeee sail away-ebvwnqdwlkvjbrkhjo its kind of hit or miss but it really starts to overstay its welcome favorite track: lonely at the top
It's an OK album with a clear highlight on "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Forgettable, but I'm unsure if the album's objective was more than that.
Signer songwriter, solide kompositioner, hyggeligt
It’s alright. Not really a fan of Randy Newman, but the album wasn’t bad.
Woody from Toy Story singing 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' was not on my bingo card.
Had Sail Away gone on for a song or two more, I’d have lowered the rating. Clever move by Newman keeping this at just half an hour. He’s a good songwriter but I’m never fully invested in the album whatsoever. But who can resist the warm fuzzy embrace of Newman’s cozy vocals.
Sounds like childhood songs like you story and shit. I liked it:)) didn't give it as much attention as I should have tho
Burn On is a classic from the Major League Soundtrack. Many classic standards
Fun little album that somehow had me thinking about Toy Story the whole time.
He has an interesting style. Includes a couple songs I didn't know he wrote!
At first I thought “ugh, why isn’t this just You’ve Got a Friend in Me” but by the end I enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to.
big differences. some songs are great! most are not...
A Classic one more than a great great album
I started off enjoying it but eventually thought his voice sounded goofy. He seems like a nice guy though.
It feels like he would be in a random park making up these songs while watching strangers or picking out random autobiographies at the library. It felt comforting like a weighted blanket.
How has someone who has written lyrics for over 50 years still write some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard?
There's more in here that I liked than I anticipated, but singer songwriter albums just really do not do much for me at all. There are some really nice jazzy vibes that reeled me in though. Favorite track: Let It Shine
Not very many necessarily bad songs, but every one sounded the same
I never thought I'd ever listen to two different Randy Newman albums, but here we are. Can't imagine I'll ever be going back to this, but it's fine just like the other one.
His voice is just so funny to me that it is tough not to laugh during the songs. But musically wise I do like the style. This was also short and sweet at a cool 30 minutes.
Feel like I'm watching a Pixar film. Not bad but wouldn't go out of my way.
Musically spot on, giving a feeling of nostalgia in places and in others uplifting whilst still being able to be melancholic. The quirky lyrics; which in the title track Sail Away could be thoughtbof as racist; are delivered with Newman's Disney recognisable voice. Heavily American and too sickly sweet for me.
Essential Tracks: Political Science (Playlist) Lonely at the Top God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Man)
Don't really understand how this is on a list like this. Its not bad at all, but it's not anything you couldn't hear anywhere. I will give it 3/5
Enjoyable while sitting around the house. But felt like a Pixar movie was on in the background when I lost focus
70/100
Randy always gets a 3 from me. Its a lot of the same with 1 or 2 hits.
Not really my music. But it was ok to let it play in the background.
Thanks to Pixar it's impossible to listen to Randy Newman without conjuring images of animated films. Easy enough to listen to, but you'll be watching a Pixar film before you know it.
Good album overall, I definitely recognised the "Toy story" vibes. Not sure I'll get back to it though
Favourite songs: Sail Away, Political Science, Memo to My Son, You Can Leave Your Hat On Least favourite songs: God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) 3/5
Not the biggest fan of Newman’s bleak satire mixed with jolly melodies (though I can’t deny his craft as a songwriter), but once in awhile he decides to write one of the most beautiful songs ever written. With Good Old Boys, it was “Marie”, with this it’s “Old Man” and with Monsters, Inc. it’s “If I Didn’t Have You” August 30, 2023 (before work)
Prediction: I won't like this. Result: I liked it more than I thought I would. But his voice is so unique, that it makes just about every song feel very similar. Still, I appreciate him as a singer/songwriter more than I did when I saw him as just a kind of cliched "writer of songs for soundtracks".
Clearly a talented songwriter, but his voice has become a meme for me. I just hear the family guy Randy Newman sings about what he sees bit.
I have railed against bad voices used poorly many times before. I feel obligated to point out that Randy Newman does not have a good voice. However, he uses it quite well.
Not a bad album. Standouts in Sail Away, Lonely At The Top, and You Can Leave Your Hat On.
Just always sounds like toy story haha
This feels like Disney music for old people, which is not as bad as it sounds! There's a certain whimsy that Randy Newman brings into your standard '70s pop, and that's where most of the album's charm comes in. It was a fine listen overall! Standout tracks are Lonely at the Top, Last Night I Had a Dream, Political Science, and You Can Leave Your Hat On.
Some good ones. Tho some of them improved by covers I like his voice
Sail Away (8) Lonely At The Top (6.5) He Gives Us All Love (5) Last Night I Had A Dream (7) Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear (5) Old Man (6.5) Political Science (6) Burn On (7.5) Memo To My Son (6) Dayton, Ohio-1903 (7.5) You Can Leave Your Hat On (5) God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind) (6.5) Let It Shine (8) Maybe Im Doing It Wrong (6.5) Summary: Sluggish, slow type of vibe. Very few stand out songs; OVERALL: 6.5/10
Just alright
I might just be a sucker for a singer-songwriter with a distinctive and slightly off voice, but god damn this album really did it for me. I need to listen to more Randy Newman and I’d kill for a Mountain Goats cover of Last Night I Had A Dream.
Rock viejuno muy lento.
Wasn't sure how I was going to feel about a Randy Newman album, but I was pleasantly surprised. Good solid sound and nothing that's disappointing.
Solid album, high three. Some good songs, but it suffers from the same fate as most Songwriter albums, sounding repetitive after a while.
Gentle. Pleasant. Sank without a trace.
Mumma för alla födda i en saloon.
Toy story music
I liked it. Similar to what I know from Randy Newman.
I want to like Randy Newman as a cooler Billy Joel. His songs are clever and he gets right inside the characters. Some is great, but perhaps like Dylan, others cover him better?
Newman can tickle the ivories, and sometimes his voice and is magical. And the other times his songs are just okay, or even weird. I found this album was up and down. His soft songs (often with orchestra accompaniment) were better. On side one I really liked Sail Away, He Gives Us All His Love, and Old Man - I didn't really care for the others. Side two was better overall - I liked Political Science, Burn On (maybe because I love Major League), and Dayton, Ohio 1903. You Can Leave Your Hat On was good, but Joe Cocker covered it better. God's Song had some pretty shrewd lyrics. The album was good more often than it wasn't, but it still felt about average. Closing in on 3.5 maybe.
This album is very similar to the other Randy Newman album we got, Good Old Boys. Neither are bad albums, but I'm unclear why I needed to hear both (and I'd give the edge to Good Old Boys). With limited space in the 1001 albums, there should only be multiple albums by the same artists if either they are essential (e.g., Led Zeppelin) or if each album demonstrates very different sides of the same artist (e.g., Tom Waits...yes, I said it). Some artists tick both boxes (e.g., the Beatles and David Bowie). I just feel it was unnecessary to have two Randy Newman albums on the list (I'm also very sensitive to this issue right now since we just heard our THIRD Kraftwerk album). That said, there were certainly some good songs on the album. God's Song hits hard (and ironic given that this album also has "He Gives Us All His Love"). Political Science is amusing and Sail Away is thought provoking. Most notable song: Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear, but only because I remember the Muppets version: https://youtu.be/SK1HVj3qM-k :D Giving it a 3 because it's not a bad album, but definitely not essential.
Solid. Nice album. I feel like I’m watching a Pixar movie while listening though…..
Ayyy the Toy Story guy again! How does this guy write such quality songs, but sound so freaking goofy at the same time.
Every track is imbued with a certain… randynewmaness. If you love that sort of thing, more stars. Me, no.
Bought this, very nice
Decent, the lyrics kept me more connected than most songs and there were some nice bits of music
Feels like I’m listening to a Disney soundtrack,
This feels like an homage to 50’s musicals. Now that I’m thinking about it, let's make this a motherf***ing musical: It’s Cleveland in 1972. The son of an Ohio coal-miner longs for more in “Sail Away”. Next, we turn our attention to a Cleveland business mogul in “Lonely at the Top”. He has learned the hard way that being successful isn’t all there is in life. We go back to the son of the Ohio coal-miner in “He Gives Us All His Love”. As he decides to run away from home, he looks back at his father with gratitude, singing about all he’s given up for their family. Later, the Cleveland business mogul has a dream that no one remembers who he is in “Last Night I Had a Dream”. He wakes up and finds that it was just a dream, but grows concerned with the meaning. He soon finds out that his father, who he had a complicated relationship with, has passed away. As the coal-miner’s son makes his way to the city of Cleveland on a bus, he stops in a bar. There, he does a number called “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear” with drunk patrons as they wish him good luck in the big city. We turn our attention back to the business mogul at his father’s funeral. Feeling lonelier than ever, he sings “Old Man”. He now has no one. Next, we go back to the coal-miner’s son on the bus. He runs into another coal-miner and they sing a ditty called “Political Science”, remarking that no one likes a coal-miner, despite them doing the hard work to keep society chugging along. Back to the business mogul, as he now faces a deep evil. Without anyone in his life, the last connection he feels is with the city of light, city of magic, his city, Cleveland. A company is attempting to get approval for dumping waste into Cuyahoga River. Our business mogul knows he must stop this company and do something to save the city his father taught him to love, singing “Burn On” to showcase it. Back to the coal-miner’s son. Or should I say, back to his father, as he learns his son has run away. He begins singing “Memo to My Son”, explaining that he believes his son will do well in the big city if he keeps his head screwed on right. He’s proud of him for running away. Back to the business mogul as he stands up in front of the local congress in Town Hall. He begins to reminisce about old times. How you could be best friends with an entire city, before everything become about moving fast and building up. His nostalgia appeals to the congress and the entire Town Hall breaks out into applause as he finishes singing “Dayton, Ohio - 1903”. They decide there will be no dumping waste into the river. Back to the coal-miner’s son as he finally arrives in the city of Cleveland. At the first diner he sits in, he spots the most gorgeous woman he’s ever seen in his eighteen years of living. He’s infatuated, and she teases him with “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. The two kiss and she asks to go back to his place. He’s only just gotten off the bus from rural Ohio! She scoffs and walks away. With a goofy smile, he realizes he’s made it. Back to the business mogul as he packs his bags to leave the city he loves so much. He’s given them everything, he realizes, and now it is time to go. He needs to find a new reason to live. Maybe that’s a woman, kids, he’ll never know until he tries. He walks out the door as “God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind” finishes. As one Cleveland man leaves, another arrives. One legacy set in stone, another brewing with potential. Such is the City of Light, City of Magic. Cleveland calls us all. Fade to Black.
Good voice, chilled out but didn't get into it. Stand out- Last night I had a dream
Randy Newman has such a recognizable voice, especially if you grew up with Toy Story. Didn’t like the god parts, but they were still not bad songs. Enjoyed the whole thing, but it got repetitive, just a bit. Not a very exciting album. Lyrically it’s wonderful and thoughtful. The chords and structure go hard as well. Mid to good. 3/5
2-3
I don't know. Randy Newman is a good songwriter, but this whole album feels a bit 'middle of the road' to me. No my jam. 3/5
I know the name and only really knew the song from Toy Story, but I'm definitely getting a bit of a more accessible, less bleak Tom Waits style of storytelling. Or perhaps Tom Waits is a darker Randy Newman? It's somewhat comforting music, I'm not sure what it is. Definitely a guy you'd wanna walk into a bar and listen to on a piano, but at home not really my thing.
Exactly what I expected.
Beautiful album, but a little too mellow for my liking. Great piano playing and vocal abilities on display though.
Long before Randy Newman sold his soul to the Disney corporation, Newman was considered a legitimately talented singer-songwriter musician type who produced critically acclaimed records. His early 70's albums are interesting and quite good, but then he had a big hit (Short People) and things blew up from there. Then for whatever reason Disney came calling and yes, he sold out to the mouse. Sail Away is an okay enough, can't say I didn't like it, but it's hard to listen to the songs without thinking about Buzz and Woody.
Not much of a fan of Randy, but this can probably grow on me if I hear it enough. Standouts: Old Man Others: Everything else Rating: 3.5
Aquí l'exemple més clar és 'You Can Leave Your Hat On', infinitament potenciada anys després per Joe Cocker.
Iets fijner Good Old Boys die we eerder al gepresenteerd kregen.
He Gives Us All His Love - нежно, красиво конечно отмечу You Can Leave Your Hat On,
Alright, so I've had some time to sit with Randy Newman's Sail Away album, and I gotta say, it's not half bad. I mean, sure, his voice is never not gonna make me think about Toy Story, but hey - that's not necessarily a bad thing. The album has got some real gems on it, like "Sail Away", the title track, and "Political Science," which are both super catchy and will have you singing along in no time. And Newman's lyrics are just top-notch. He's like a musical wordsmith, weaving together stories and observations with a wit that's both sharp and subtle. Now, I will say that the album isn't perfect. There are a few tracks that kind of blend together and don't really stand out. But hey, nobody's perfect, right? And the songs that do hit, they hit hard. All in all, I'd give Sail Away a solid 3,5 out of 5 (but as .5 stars aren't available on here I'm gonna round it down to a 3). It's a fun listen that'll make you laugh, make you feel, and maybe even make you ponder the state of the world a bit. And who knows, maybe after a few more listens, I won't even be able to think of Woody anymore. But let's be real, that's probably not gonna happen.
God’s song was the only real highlight here for me. Dayton 1903 annoyed me.
I really like Randy's voice and it is partly because of the nostalgia of toy story and other Disney music. Also when I went on a family trip to California in like 2004 we had some kind of Disney flight and listened to the Disney radio the entire 10+ hours or whatever to San Francisco with hours of him chatting about writing Disney music and then the songs... strange behaviour but we didn't have TVs so this reminds me of that fun memory haha. I think he is super talented and I like the overall vibe. However, I don't like how twee some of the songs are and I don't like the religious themes that creep in.
Well I guess I enjoyed this! Its hard to not think every Randy Newman song is aimed at kids, and I'm not sure its just the Toy Story influence. He's just got quite a comical voice and style! Clearly a talented musician too.
I do like Randy Newman, he's got some belters but the filler tracks were a bit lacking on this for me.
YCLYHO
Song interesting song writing on a few songs, not sure on the execution
An alright listen. Nothing super amazing or horrible about this for me. Just felt like another okay album.
Satirical, funny and poignant, some heartfelt moments but could fun a little one note sonically
Very Disney esq, a tad to Jesusy, not bad just don't think I'll listen to again
This has definitely helped improve my interpretation of Randy Newman which was just Toy Story man and being made fun of in Family Guy and South Park. I can say for sure Newman is more skilled as a songwriter than a singer, but at least he isn't too annoying. About half of Sail Away is not for me, but there is some good songs like the title track and Old Man than make me want to listen to again for a better opinion.
ок)
I want to like Randy Newman more than I do. Maybe I'm not yet cynical enough. I'm sure I will eventually get there; I do recognize the talent and the wit. 3.5
This is pre-Disney Randy Newman, I know, but the most memorable song for me was Lonely at the Top, which had a very “didn’t make the cut for the Toy Story soundtrack” vibe. I dare you to listen to that song and tell me you don't visualize Buzz Lightyear head hung low, thinking about Woody being upset with him because of some imagined power struggle.
This album splits me in two. Generally speaking, I love Newman's musical style, and I think he achieves a sort of genius with some of his lyrics and their commentary. And while I think he dominates his niche genre and there are some definite killer tracks in this album, there's also a lot of pretty meh stuff in my opinion, and that's what's keeping me from a 4.
Not sure what to make of this. The first thing the kids said is "That Toy Story Dude". Yep, sure is. I had no idea he did anything except the Toy Story theme. But yep, he sure did. This. And probably other stuff too. It was...well....Toy Story, although with some racier lyrics. I did appreciate "I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost, but you are what scared me the most". Classic. So as an album of adult oriented Toy Story themes, not bad.
Randy newman just has a special way of writing songs. Nobody else sounds like him or has songs that sound quite like this. The second track Immediately made me think of monsters inc and toy story. My criticism of this album is that most of these songs sound the same. Not an awful thing in this case. Solid 5/10
The lyrics are worth checking out, but musically it does not engage me.
Not the biggest Randy Newman fan. I can see how people could really like it, just not for me.
3.5
I said in my other Randy Newman review, but I get why Disney hired this guy. His is the template of Pixar movies so this album, unsurprisingly, sounds like that. It isn't bad, it's comforting, but it isn't exceptional. 3.5/5
There’s no denying that Randy Newman is a gifted songwriter and arranger, but his voice might be the hurdle some listeners can’t overcome. For those who can, Sail Away walks a fine line between whimsical and just a bit too silly, and most of the time it maintains that balance well.
A real american twang
Good music. slow and southern. He's known from toy story.
Is it considered blasphemous to say that most every Randy Newman song sounds the same? I'm sure people think he is charming or even a genius but I seem to be missing something
It's a pretty gentle album. There's some interesting songs that question faith.
Not my bag, but solid songwriting. Randy Newman has become a bit of a joke, but cool to see where it all started.
Way better than expected. The man knows how to handle a bass line, and the lyrics are refreshingly wry, satirical and occasionally heavy.
Meh. Title track is good, as is Political Science, but I don't like the songwriting enough to overcome the sketchiness of his voice (which is great at within a pretty small range and not great otherwise). It's pleasant, but not a lot more than that. Squeaks a 3.
Yeah this is randy Newman—not bad, just too slow and too much tuba for my taste
Hate it. But can't argue against it.
You've Got a Friend In Me."
A whole album of Toy Story songs 😅
Ha una voce da colonne sonore disney e c'è 'You can leave your hat on' Non molto altro.
Ef fólk fílar You've got a friend in me, þá er þetta plata fyrir þau. Voðalega kósí og vinalegt og gæti flest passað inn í Disney teiknimynd.
Not familiar with Randy Newman's stuff but the style in this album really reminded of his famous song for Toy Story. Not my particular cup of tea but I do think I need to give it a couple more listens to truly appreciate it.
Randy Newman is a pretty incredible talent and I like most of the songs on this album. It's just really hard to listen to an entire album. It starts to get repetitive pretty fast. If I heard each of these songs interspersed throughout a day or so of listening to music I wouldn't mind as much but when you listen to them all in a row you start looking for the "skip" button. 3.5 stars
My knowledge of Randy Newman was limited to Toy Story and that Family Guy bit making fun of him, so this is better than I expected. His lyrics have a vein of dark satire about America, such as enticing people into slavery and nuking the world. His voice must be an acquired taste though.
Dig the voice, but this all sounds like a Pixar movie. Somehow this man has no soul whatsoever. Old Man sounded awful but the song was sad. Also, this dude was born and raised in California. Why he sing like NoLa?
j'ai entendu la chanson You've got a friend in me de Toy Story tout le long perso
There are a couple of great songs in here, but a whole album of Randy Newman (even if it is only 30 minutes) is just too much. Best track: Sail Away
"Is this the 'You've Got a Friend in Me' guy?" Yes, yes it is. The guy has a signature voice, instantly recognizable and forever immortalized by a Pixar song. But hey, he's more than that. There are quite a few excellent tracks on here. I can't say that I was blown away overall, and after a little while I found the music slipping into the background for me (happened on both listens). I guess that just happens with a voice like his. But it's a good album, no denying it! And I just love the lyric "he's happy as a monkey in a monkey tree." Well done, Randy! I could see this growing on me. Favorite tracks: Sail Away, Last Night I Had a Dream, Dayton Ohio 1903. Album art: Just a headshot, but the angle is unique I guess? He looks like a Bond villain version of Elton John or something, I don't know. Not sure what I expected the guy with this voice to look like, maybe a Burl Ives snowman? 3.5/5
Plenty of good songs but just wasn't taken with the delivery. Maybe better covered by others. As a collection is was a little unrelenting.
Can’t listen to Randy Newman without thinking about Buzz Lightyear, but this album was lovely.
A nice easy listen, a few really cool tracks but a lot of it not something I'd listen to again
Better than I was expecting. His original version of Leave Your Hat on is so toned down compared to the Joe cocker remake, but still nice to hear. 3/5
Such a unique voice. Immediate recognition. Lots of talent here, and is a nice easy-listening, background sound. All that said, does not do much for me. C-
I Liked it, I know...I know... but I have a weird liking for Randy Newman but it is always better when someone covers his work...but he writes some great songs.
Good songwriting but I can’t get over the vocals
“Burn on” is a banger
He's a great songwriter and funny. I enjoyed this.
popperige singer-songwriter muziek van weleer. Aangename achtergrondmuziek
Genre: Piano Rock 3/5 I’ll give Randy Newman this: the man is hilarious. And a very good songwriter. Sail Away is that weird, goofy kid in high school turned into an album. Newman takes on all originals, including some which had already been recorded by other artists, and puts his own unique twist on things. Once you get passed Newman’s voice, a voice which is equal parts nostalgic (sounds like Toy Story) and equal parts hilarious (sounds like a goofball), what your left with is a very well-produced, albeit unspectacular, album. You Can Leave Your Hat On and Political Science are both great, and pretty hilarious, but those are the ones where his style showcases what he does best. The rest feel pretty small in comparison. Decent, overall.
Decent. Nice calm tunes. A little bit of groove at times.
-"God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)" and "Political Science" have particularly interesting themes -"Lonely At The Top" was nice enough I guess -The songs on this album all have a major problem and that is that they are by Randy Newman, but aren't "You've Got a Friend in Me" and we're featured in a beloved movie from my childhood
Can't not hear toy story
Positive vibes, some songs were catchy but the album didn't leave a huge impression on me
Who knew Pixar's crown prince of the heartfelt ditty was so sarcastic and satirical? Not I! The unexpected darkness and depth of the lyrical content impresses me, but the showtune-y sheen layered on top of everything gets old fast. I appreciate the way he uses what he's got to make his point, but this won't become every day ongoing listening for me. Glad I stopped by, but even gladder still to be moving on.
A beautiful album all together, but lacks dynamics and a bit more from the instrumentation accompanying the piano.
Easy listening music that sounds jolly. Not bad but nothing really stood out
This was okay, it made me think of Toy Story but wasn't my favorite.
This was alright, kinda felt like I was listening to a Pixar soundtrack. Overall it was kind of a boring listen.
fozzie’s version of Simon Smith was a profound part of my childhood. Much to appreciate on this album
i could literally hear his toy story voice from a mile away it was so funny. i liked his album i thought it was soothing and interesting (i liked sail away- the message was chilling).
(Comical voice) You've got to be in the right mood for a big dose of Randy
MMMMMMMM maso
I know Randy Newman from his movie soundtrack work but I'm not familiar with his early albums. This has his very recognizable voice, man on a piano singing some kind of goofy half-speed ragtime music. Very contrasting tone compared to the lyrics, seems he was a religious man but then also not much faith in humanity. Interesting listen, glad I got to see this side of his music outside of Disney.
Middle of the road, nothing amazing
I’m impressed that in the same year that Steeley Dan, Alice Cooper and Yes released albums that I listened to a lot in the decade that followed, Randy Newman was doing his own thing, head down at the piano, singing away in a voice not really meant for singing. Especially with songs like Political Science and God’s Song more or less guaranteeing that he’d stay below the radar.
A bit too much like a soundtrack for a musical for me. But he’s got a great voice and I loved some of the melodies and arrangements.
You Can Leave Your Hat On. A voir et à revoir.
Should be a 3.5, but not quite a 4.
toy story guy makes an album about Ohio
Much Toy Story, very wow
Cultura general
I thought I would like this more.
Nice songs with nice instrumentation.
decent, easy listening.
Alright to listen too.
Makes me want to watch Toy Story honestly. He has a great voice though and this album is some pleasant baroque pop. Also there's a song about Cleveland for some reason?
I can never take Randy Newman's voice seriously. Lonely At The Top is a dark carnival soundscape. Its a charming album, I just don't think I really care for most of it.
Like Randy Newman. I don't love Randy Newman. Nice voice and good vibes.
Way more sad than I thought
- vocal affectation is an acquired tastes - bluesy vibe but pedestrian chords.. where's the jazz? - few tracks that are just eh - songs are so short they are almost jingles..
Not what I was expecting really and I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. Some interesting lyrics and variety from plinky plonky song to some bluesy ones as well. Pleasant surprise!
Enjoyed his voice and some of the more lyrically uneasy songs such as gods song. Arguably though Randys best work is in film
Another unusual style that I enjoyed listening to. May listen again.
Randy Newman isn't really for me I think. I've listened to another of his albums previously and that also didn't really click.
Pleasant is my best descriptor of Randy Newman and this album. It's soft piano and orchestral arrangements allow Newman's storytelling and portraits to do their work. It's not wholly engaging or as prescient as other folk/singer songwriters of the era but it is well crafted, it's pleasant to spend time with.
Surprisingly good. Sail Away the song is truly excellent. Last Night I Had a Dream, Political Science, and Lonely at the Top also good. As an overall album I got a little bored but that’s probably more a reflection on my tastes.
9th June 2021 Listened throughout the day on the day I had a staff call and lots of big sites went down, finished on a walk to the supermarket. I really like the simplicity of Randy Newman, very sweet yet soulful songs.
It was a fine slice of Americana and certainly understand why it is on the list. Having said that, I think it was just ok. The singer songwriter trope is evergreen but Randy Newman's take feels a bit stale.
Classic Randy Newman
It was ok. Probably wouldn't buy or go out of my way to listen.
I didn’t like his voice at first but it actually grew on me a lot. Really simple musically and corny at times, but it had some nice moments and was pleasant to listen to overall 6?
Boring and disliked the lyrics. His voice grew on me though. 5
02/03 - Yesterday I worked on door details for drum storage, talked through further detail development with Carissa, and helped Vidula bring views into the Manufacturing model. Randy Newman was actually a far better listen then I was expecting. I recognized his voice immediately from Toy Story but had never heard of any other songs he had. The description of him on Spotify listed that he is a great lyricist which I think makes his songs so interesting and what actually kept my attention. Not necessarily a genre I would save and listen to daily but definitely an album worth knowing of.
6/10. A few of the songs were fairly amusing, which made up for the fairly bland music, but there it is not amusing enough to be especially memorable.
A very good listen, with some really classic songs. Randy Newman's voice reminds me of my youth.
I can't hear Randy Newman's voice and not think of Toy Story
Si acaso reconocí "You Can Leave Your Hat On" por esas primeras notas. Last Night I Had A Dream". 7.5/10
Really nice, short snippets. Some of the songs were a bit out there, but Randy Newman is always a pleasant listen. Favorite Tracks: “Political Science” and “You Can Leave Your Hat On”
Pop rock muy melódico. Agradable.
Mon hit c'est You've got a friend in me. Go Woody! Go Buzz! Fuck Sid!
He's got a distinctive style, I'l give him that. I think a lot of the charm is probably in the lyrics, so it's not well suited to listening in the background while working. I'll potentially revisit it at some point! Since the Monk theme tune wasn't on here, fave track "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)", as that one made me stop what I was doing and pay attention...
Don't remember
shrug
Fav Song: Last Night I Had a Dream
I can't help but laugh when I hear his voice. He sounds like a drunk Disney cartoon side character singing to the protagonist during a traveling montage (Thanks Toy Story?) and it's really hard for me to get past and take him seriously no matter how good the lyrics might be. The music is rather cartoonish too (but interesting!) Definitely hear how he may have influenced someone like Rufus Wainwright. Last Night I Had a Dream and Burn On seemed like the best fit of his voice and music. Overall, pretty silly. I can see how he became known for Schoolhouse Rock and Pixar.
Is this soul? Blues? Rock n roll? I guess it's all of them, it switches between songs. Songs are really varied, like there's no way this came from one writing session etc. The songs themselves are honestly pretty damn good, and it has the good sense to only go for half an hour, but there's something weird about his voice. Like an odd inflection or something. It's not a deal breaker, but it kinda stops the album being a 4. I hadn't heard this version of leave your hat on before, which was cool but not the best version of it. 3/5.
Annoying voice, mediocre piano playing, and shit lyrics. Terrible album that doesn't belong on a list like this. His best work is actually his soundtrack work, particularly from "The Natural", where he doesn't sing and doesn't sound like himself.
Actually, I should be a huge Randy Newman fan. I like talented singer-songwriters who write powerful lyrics exploring the darker sides of life. I appreciate self-deprecation and sarcasm as forms of criticism. Yet there's something about Randy Newman's music that just doesn't resonate with me. It could be his brittle singing style, even though I have no problem with so-called 'ugly' voices. It could be his deeply American perspective on the world — bitter and critical, certainly, but thoroughly American — or it could be something else entirely. Even though I find most of the songs brilliant, the album just washes over me. Sorry, Randy.
Instantly realised that Randy Newman sings you’ve got a friend in me from Toy Story. Not my favourite songs would give it like a 2.5 if I could.
Randy Newman - good for Toy Story soundtrack, bad for full length album. I did not need to hear this before I die. I was also baffled to learn he has not one but TWO albums on this list.
He definitely has an unique singing voice, for those who are into that. Honestly this didn't do anything for me. Supremely indifferent.
Now forever linked with Pixar. Nice enough though
Quite pleasant to listen to, though the expanded edition contains two versions of You Can Leave Your Hat On, which is frankly unnecessary
expected more thats on me
2/3
No standouts
Tom Waits on librium
Hokey AF
Pretty sure I've never listened to a non-Toy Story Randy Newman song. (Until now.) This had the effect of making the album feel like a Toy Story soundtrack. Was not expecting a paean to Cleveland ('Burn On') in this Toy Story movie. Why are there multiple songs about Ohio? Randy's from LA. This is like CCR's bayou stuff all over again. I fear it is not for me. Highlight: 'Memo to My Son'
I can't imagine a time where I'd be in the mood for this
Another Randy Newman album? Maybe this one is less racist. I see the Disney resemblance. Singer songwriter albums rarely get more than 3* from me. This is ok, but not something I'd revisit. 2* The cover of "you can leave your hat on" gave me the creeps, it's like your creepy drunk uncle doing a karaoke rendition.
I feel like the German language should have a word that translates to "that activity that is probably fine, because others seem to enjoy it, but leaves me wishing I was doing pretty much anything else" ...so then I could apply it to listening to Randy Newman.
Didn't expect Randy Newman on this list. I always thought of him as a gimmick. Honestly this isn't very good. His voice is below average, and others do his songs better. So I guess he can write, he just can't sing that well. 2.
A peor cada canción
It was ok at best. It just sounded like a Toy Story soundtrack. There's nothing jarring or awful about any of the tracks. They're just boring.
Nothing stood out to me until I got to "last night I had a dream". It was a cool bluesy rock song but no idea what it was about.
Sail Away by Randy Newman left me a little conflicted. I still can’t quite work out whether I really like Randy Newman or find him slightly irritating, but overall I did enjoy listening to this album. Musically and lyrically, the album is very strong. The songwriting is clever, the arrangements are excellent and there’s a lot of personality throughout. Newman clearly has a unique style and way of telling stories that stands out from most singer-songwriters. My biggest issue is that I can’t separate his voice and style from Disney soundtracks. Every song feels like it could appear in a Pixar or Disney film somewhere, which occasionally makes it difficult for me to fully take the album seriously. That said, there’s still plenty here to appreciate and the quality of the songwriting carries it through. Favourite track: “Sail Away” is a brilliant song Least favourite track: Everything here was worth listening to Album artwork: Wonderful hair
the you got a friend in me guy :0 het is prima.. beetje saai..
2.4 2x nothing wrong but not my thing
After about six songs, I was done. Felt like I was listening to the soundtrack for a kids' show or Disney movie. (Not exactly the "get up and go" tunes I prefer in the morning.)
Ah yes. Randy Newman. I fall firmly in the camp of this guy is great, I wish he wasn't the one singing. A song like You Can Leave Your Hat On is totally undermined by hearing it from a muppet. I think the Family Guy send up of Randy Newman S02E03 is about as accurate a portrayal as there is and it lives rent free in my head.
Randy has a great voice, but I can't listen to these songs for very long.
It's highly regarded, and I don't know why. Even the hit, Leave your hat on, doesn't hit - Cocker's version is much better. Sold many years ago.
Would it be inaccurate to call this Kidz Bop Tom Waits?
Not sure how he got a second album on here. This was fine, but nothing that felt special about it.
A bit too MOR for me.
I mean it's not bad but it's not outstanding either, I'm not sure how this is in this ranking. And yes I agree it feels like Disney songs (because he made them) so not the best pieces of music ever. I was working while listening and compeletely forgot the music was on, which I feel is telling. Cover : Kind of boring, nice color
He's got a nice voice. My thing is, how am I supposed to listen to this and not immediately think I'm in a Toy Story movie? Favorite track: Last Night I Had A Dream
Listen. I love the song "I Love LA" and all its absurdity, but that being said, Randy Newman songs sound like the music and lyrics are being written off the top of his head and recorded in 1 take. And that is not a compliment.
all of them sounded the same
The guys lyrics are incredible, his voice is good, maybe an acquired taste. The music is okay, it's kind of schmaltzy in some places, and like jazzy clown music in others. One of those albums where I can appreciate the talent and artistry without feeling the need to listen to it ever again.
I just cannot stand Randy Newman's voice .....
Found this depressing, not for me.
Can’t move past his voice
It’s difficult to hear Randy Newman’s voice without thinking of Toy Story. ‘Sail Away’ has very much the same vibe to it as ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’ and makes for an enjoyable intro. Unfortunately from there, whilst Randy has a wonderfully rich vocal the songs just dont do much. Political Science is good, but hardly thrilling. The last track is a bit of a dirge and a poor way to end the album. Just needed more energy in places to lift this from just being a good vocalist with hit and miss material
I've been dreading another Randy Newman album. It's partly because I can't listen to him without thinking of Toy Story. Partly because I find his nasaly voice a little grating. But I'm trying to give it a chance and appreciate the artistry. The songwriting is pretty good, enough that many of these songs were performed (sometimes famously) by other artists of the era, most notably Harry Nilsson. And thankfully this album doesn't have any obvious racial slurs, unlike the other one on this list. But wait, is there a song encouraging nuclear war? I mean, maybe it's meant to be satire but I think I'm kind of glad to be finished listening to Randy Newman albums now.
Good tunes and melodramatic feelings, but boring as hell
Eh... Didn't really resonate with me much. Alright piece of music
He's great but I can't listen to him for more than 3 minutes
Solid Pop country music I find but I can't say it was very memorable.
You‘ve got a friend in me. Not.
chanson préférée : Lonely at the Top
It’s hard to get away from the Pixar soundtrack sound that he has become. But this is ok and some enjoyable covers.
I like Randy’s voice, but the tracks didn’t do much for me.
