Reviews (page 11 of 12)

The album is way too long. O Children is the best one.

This was pretty bad, I just couldn't get down with it. DNF due to the length. Wouldn't relisten

I have been getting a lot of double albums recently and they are getting really draining. This one should have just been two albums. They are both good and both are pretty different stylistically so why do they have to be on top of each other? I don't need this much nick cave in one sitting. And he's not saying anything that two albums couldn't have done. Which is too bad because I think of all the authors obsessions Nick cave is probably the only one that warrants multiple albums on this list because his albums are so different stylistically . Certainly not Elvis Costello. I'm just tired.

It’s fine. I enjoyed the songs but it got a little tedious and lengthy. Song lyrics are tepid, but music is pretty crisp and tight

If you’re gonna make a list of 1001 greatest albums of all time you’re gonna have to include a bunch of filler stuff and this feels like filler to me it’s OK, not spectacular

Ugh, it just kinda rambles and gets close to good, but the fact that it never gets there is worse than something that never gets close.

2 stars. Would have been a 1 star if not for a few songs but still that's a no from me dawg!! The Lyre of Orpheus is possibly the weirdest song lyrically I think I have ever heard.

Just don't really do Nick Cave all that well. Was a little repetitive. 2/5

I made it through the whole album, and there were a couple of songs I enjoyed but overall not something I cared for the album.

best track by miles - there she goes. Otherwise perfectly fine but wouldn't listen again , which is surprising since i really loved Ghosteen .

The grandiose title and concept is betrayed by the fact the album just doesn't particularly go anywhere. A handful of good ideas are lost in a sea of the unremarkable. The lyricism was a particular catching point as it ranged from unnoticeable and bland to egregiously clumsy.

Less depressing than the other Nick Cave album(s) I've listened to so far, but I just can't get into this.

I guess I’m not into nick cave

I'm just not vibing with this album.

Sorry Nick, not for me. Boring… goes on for too long. There are a couple of tracks I can enjoy but I will never go back to this. 1 extra star for the Harry Potter song.

I usually try to write these ratings before reading my compatriot’s ratings. Today I’m glad I read theirs first. I too cannot get into this album/band. They feel like something I should enjoy but I just don’t.

It's fine. For me, it's too long and it reminds me of Tom Waits too much. I think it's the carnival barker/spoken word bits. I've tried with Nick Cave and I just don't really get it. Same with Tom Waits. So, this one's not for me. As an aside, does it feel like all the really good Tom Waits songs are the covers that other bands do? He's a good songwriter, but he should leave it to someone else to arrange and perform his stuff.

I remember seeing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds @ Lollapalooza a million years ago -- only band I liked less that day was The Boredoms -- maybe a studio (double) album will change my mind. It was fine, pretty decent Tom Waits like adjacent tunes, but nothing spectacular in my mind.

This was not a bad album, but it sounded like meat loaf and the velvet underground collabed.

The lyrics on this one really distract from the rest of what is going on. Would have been much, much better released as an instrumental track highlighting the band around the lead singer instead of his Talking Heads wanna be head ass. Lukewarm 3/10.

I don't really like this band

I don’t get all the fuss about Nick Cave. Best song is one he did with Kylie. Aside from that there are one or two others I don’t mind.

Can’t get over the fact that this is an Australian man imitating an old American blues guy. It’s not as bad as the other nick cave albums on the list but it just makes me cringe

Not for me

Ugh these guys again. Obnoxious and self-important. Noisy yet bringing no real value. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)

No es mi estilo

most bland and boring snoozer shit everrrrr

Wasn't a bad album. Just not really that interesting either. Kind of meh. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Nick Cave is an artist that I like in very small doses, some great tracks and very distinct unique sound and style. It's just listening to a whole album and one as long as this one where that style becomes just too much. While I'm giving this album a low rating I could easily make a 5 star rated playlist of Nick Cave's music.

I don’t like Nick Cave.

Wasn't my thing. I don't think I've liked any of his stuff as much as I like Red Right Hand.

Would have been 3 stars if it was shorter!

alternative rock, definitely grew on me as I listened, my true rating would be more of a 2.5, it’s cool but it’s just not my taste

Sounds a bit like a gospel from a church. Nothing really stuck out to me on this album.

Not sure why this was released as a double album and not two single albums, as they don't sound connected at all. Nick's voice is something, and for the most part it works for the songs, though at times he does remind me a little of Peter Steele which I guess isn't a terrible thing. Each of the two discs as a solo album would probably end up as a 3 for me, but together, with the length it pulled it down to a 2. It was just too much Nick Cave for one morning.

Abattoir Blues was a decent disc. A mixture of blues, rock, and a bit of gospal in there as well. Honestly a nice blend of sounds. The Lyre of Orpheus however, not so great. A lot of skippable tracks in my opinion that brought the vibe down. By the end when I finally got to the most popular song, O Children, I was pretty sick of the sound and didn't even enjoy the track. Overall, I'd give it a 2/5

Too long and not my jam.

The first half of the album was hard to get through. The second half was alright.

Not my vibe but slightly better than the other Nick Cave album

Not as bad as Henry's Dream, but I still don't think he's a good singer. Most of the songs were okay.

This one didn’t quite make me want to gouge my eyes out like his other albums. A 2 because I made it to the end.

It's like hadestown if I didn't like the music

did a light listen here so sorry nick cave enjoyable. this alt rock sound is more my speed for some reason reminded me a bit of the last shadow puppets, maybe bc the kind of theatrics-ish that pop out here

I just didn't really get anything out of this

It was okay, got a little long - being two albums - and I didn't really hate it, but I didn't really like it either.

Annoying

This album was just ok for me. There wasn't anything that I specifically did not like about this, but overall it did not really grab me in any kind of way that made me want more. I think the length did not help, but this is sort of two separate albums combined rather than one double album. Would not seek it out again.

have you ever heard a song and not liked it thats how this album get ready for love made me feel i did not like the lyrics or instruments they didnt sound good and i would much like to listen to something other than this i dont like this album and i would not recommend listening to this album

like the bass and the drums i dont like his voice i dont like the sound of it the piano was nice in the beginning

Not as bad, as I thought. Still like 2 and half stars, as it is pretty long.

just not for me. I’m not even halfway through but it’s long, kind of boring. Some songs are slow and some have too much going on

Not something I enjoyed. Sounds like a darker version of Neil Diamond.

Good, but not my kind of stuff, interesting songs here and there, but not well rounded I would say

niet echt mijn ding

I understand this album may have cultural significance but I didn't find it particularly interesting, certainly not interesting enough to ever want to listen to it again. Some catchy melodies, but not catchy enough for me to want to find them again. Would possibly put it on in the background if I had guests over and I wanted them to think I'm cool.

I respect Nick Cave and all but I did not like this 💀

Immediate reaction: Fucking Nick Cave (unflattering) Since this is my third Nick Cave album in 150 generated, I had to check how many more I have to subject myself to. Turns out, one of you finishing fuckers must have added Ghosteen, since that's not listed on the book site. At least 2 more. Maybe they'll pop up soon and soon I'll never need to listen to this pompous ass again. They Lyre of Orpheus is especially obnoxious.

I wasn't the biggest fan of this album. I've heard some of his other work and enjoyed it but this album was really a bit of a drag to get through for me.

Now I remember why I never liked Nick Cave.

Nick Cave fucking sucks!

Ok. Won't listen again. Whiney faux outrage look at me I'm so depressed/angry/profound.

Hiding All Away // 2.5/5

Like two weird albums in one! Nature Boy is the best song, Fable Of The Brown Ape might just be the weirdest song on the 1001 list so far. (The Lyre Of Orpheus similar but not quiet as weird…) It ran a little long for me, but I had to check out a couple of songs twice (2.5*s)

It seems like Nick Cave is appearing quite a bit in this list and I'm still not sold. He sounds like he's straining his voice and the music is generic. It's not wowing (and I really want it to), I mean is this man really singing about "hankies"? Yes. There's a few good songs on this album but I can't get past the weird voice affect and none made it to saved playlists. I'm on the fence so I'll keep trying with Nicky but O Mamma his time is dwindling.

boring

Somehow all right, but overall quite monotonous

yeah whatever

Quelques morceaux m'ont réveillé : There She Goes, My Beautiful World + Nature boy Mais vraiment trop peu. =>2/5

Some songs I actually didn’t mind. There she goes my beautiful world actually wasn’t too bad and I enjoyed ‘the lyre of Orpheus’ too. But, as the album continued on a lot of the lyrics got weird and there just wasn’t a lot keeping me in it.

Musically, this album is pretty good. It’s stylistically consistent, but still some variety. It seems that Nick Cave likes to tell a story in his songs, but still some weird/gruesome/cringe lyrics which I’m not really a fan of, and none of the stories spoke to me or really “meant” anything. Never thought I would hear “I put my hand down your panties” in a song. Maybe the trick is just to laugh at the weird stuff and enjoy the rest. Favorite song: Breathless.

I really wanted to give this a one for old times sake but I feel like there was some nice instrumentation here. But the gall to think people need an hour and twenty minutes of your music is unnerving

About 20 years ago, a good friend introduced me to the song "Into My Arms," which he was obsessed with. Great song, but now I'm saddled with the curse of forever keeping Cave on my radar even though I don't really like most of his stuff. This album put me off right away, but of course I kept listening and there are just enough positive elements to keep the pipe dream alive. Dammit, Nick, don't give me hope.

It's ok

This band makes me think that their fans are very insufferable, a lot of "you just dont get it, man" type conversations when you talk about their songs. Production is pretty good and you can tell they put a lot into it, if you like them you'll probably love this, me, not so much.

Self indulgent bleh. Too long and too up it’s own ass

Somehow dull and unpleasant. This rhythmic talking style singing, which probably characterizes the band, doesn't appeal to me.

I liked a few tracks, namely "Hiding All Away" and "Easy Money," but overall found this album to be a bit of a drag.

Hard work in places, can't sing though. Listenable but not again.

Cant say i really liked this album, can be very boring, with onky a few momenta of interest.

Really good album

The music is great, the lyrics are weird and the singing was very hit and miss.

I intentionally passed on this and giving it a 2 because I do not like Nick Cave. Promise not to do that too often.

Partly annoying, but in other parts enjoyable.

Maybe if this were 40 minutes it would be an acceptable album but I was just annoyed

Average. Won't listen again

Distinctive sound and some of it is good. Far too long and in no way justifies its length.

Another Nick Cave album that didn't interest me at all. Far too long. I did have a nice nap whilst listening to it though.

I found this a little boring and droney and it went on for far too long

I like Nick better as a TV/Movie composer (Peaky Blinders theme song, e.g.). A whole album of his dirge-like songs is a bit much to take. Quite liked the final track, though.

Hmmm mwah

Some good sounding songs.

It's alright but not gonna be included on my main playlist. 2.5/5

This album may have been a 3, except it was so dang long. This was much better than the other Nick Cave album we had, and his vocals on this one weren't terrible, but the songs all felt a little whiny+Pearl Jammy to me.

No. I didn’t need to listen to this before I die. Bad “singing.” Nothing unique or interesting here. Why?

I get it. This guy loves Nick Cave. I thought I did, too, from the few songs of his I knew but after listening to 3 of these albums I can safely say I just don’t care. 🤷‍♂️

I don't dislike Nick Cave. But I do find it it very difficult to key in to what I do like in music. Another of those artists that need more time and patience than I'm willing to give.

30% I liked Good artist just not for me

Not my jam

I listened to it. There was music. I couldn't tell you a single thing about any of the songs. None of them struck me in a positive way and the ones that aggravated me are stuck in my head. I did the lesson. I won't repeat it.

One needs to acquire a taste for this band; I lost that taste a long time ago.

Not great. 2/5

The songs were kind of boring to me

Not for me couldn't make it to the end.

La verdad es que me aburrió

I'm finding I'm not a fan of Nick Cave & the bad Seeds. How do they have 3 albums on this list? I don't enjoy the lead singers droning speak-singing. The lyrics sound like a stuffy poem I would have to study for an English class. The choir-style backing vocals and crashing drums are interesting, but it's not enough to elevate the album. "Breathlessly" wasn't so bad, but I skipped around through most of the songs. It was best when I wasn't paying much attention to each track and just let it play in my background. It's probably a more enjoyable experience live with all the elements together. 2.5 stars

No pude terminarlo, no me emociona

Couldn’t really get into it

Nothing exciting here. Second half of the album was better but still not my jam.

80 minutes of this guy?! On a Monday?! "The Lyre of Orpheus"!? Come on man, give me a fucking break. This album has the frantic energy of a mega-church band trying to whip the congregation into a frenzy with an overwhelming deluge of keyboards and big reverby drums and wailing. Sometimes that's pretty fun. The bass is really good throughout - melodic, driving and high in the mix. There's also some nice atmospheric/textural stuff and some cool guitar parts. I just find the songwriting to be very conventional big bland rock but with grand pretensions to it. And I don't like Tom Waits enough to want to listen to a pale imitator. Every song seems like it should be wrapping up, but then there's another verse/chorus, and bou does it start to drag in the moodier slower second half. It has a cool film-noir feel to it, but the whole thing really overstays its welcome. Favorites: Messiah Ward, Let the Bells Ring, Easy Money

This is interesting, but not really for me

He talks.

Not a huge fan of it, but grunge for my liking.

I think Nick cave is fine, I just really don't fuck with his vocal style, I don't know what it is. He's undeniably talented but i just can't stand how he sounds between this, The Birthday Party, or any other project, sorry

I enjoyed more of the hard-rock parts on the album, but the slower acoustic song "Breathless" might've been my favorite song. Overall the album just felt painfully average.

Long and it felt like Nick Cave was trying to hard

Crap. Another Nick Cave album. I suppose it might be better than the other 2 that have popped up in my first 140 albums… And then it started off pretty good, with a solid high energy rocker. A little long, but good. My hopes were rising! Sadly, that was just the one song. The rest was meh, at best. I don't understand how somebody can expect to be taken seriously singing lyrics like "we could comprehend our position by the moon / but they've ordered the moon not to shine"... Or "If you're gonna dine with them cannibals / Well sooner or later, darling, you're gonna get eaten". Seriously? Anyway, this is miles better than Murder Ballads (1), and maybe a little better than "The Boatman's Call (2). on the other hand, it drags on for 82 minutes. My comments on Boatman's included: "Melancholy songs, atonal singing, stupid lyrics." My comments on Murder included: "As before, the music isn’t horrible, though it is overall slow and slogging and dragging. Cave’s vocal style is not really singing, but more spoken in a morose, I-hate-the-world-and-myself sort of tone." That applies here. 2/5

A perfectly average album, does this deserve to be on the list? no. Is it a bad album though? No

Enjoativo.

Mmm struggled to remember if it was any good after the album was over lol

Probably needs 10 listens in a dark room then becomes amazing. Once through doesn’t really cut it.

It's fine. Sounds like a mix of two styles that I can't really put my finger on... blues and rock? pop?

Only the most popular songs. The last one is from Harry Potter O Children

Never knowingly listened to Nick Cave. I happened to have to do a pile of work in a short period of time and put this on to listen to at the same time. I finished the work and realised that the music had finished a whole before. I have no real memory of any of it. I didn't turn anything off so it's not a 1, but unmemorable enough to make me unlikely to ever go back again.

Gives me some Hadestown vibes

Could be 2.5. I’ve heard so much about Nick Cave over the years but never really listened. There are some good aspects but generally I find it boring and too close to what sounds like folk or American South/gospel to me. Favorite song: There she goes, my beauty

This wasn't quite as bad aa I thought it would be. Side A actually has some good and decent songs on it, not that any od them are remarkable. Side B is a mess however. Didn't really enjoy this.

Not bad, but far from being my cup of tea. Disc 1 was quite decent, had the level stayed the same, I could have given this a weak 3, but Disc 2 was quite meh. Also this had no right to be this long.

Fine. Alternative early 2000s. Cave has a sort of Lou Reed + Psychedelic Furs voice.

Ummm. It didn't suck. Yup. That about it. Just good enough not to suck. Not one memorable track. Nothing I would add to my favorites.

Did not like it.

Koffor e da så masse nick cave her

Many of the songs have not a lot of melody. I found it very boring, but it’s easy to listen to. Raucous, energetic, and quick but not angry.

sikkert bra men ikke helt for meg

No me gusta ese estilo de música

Not a bad album, but not a fan

Like going to church. Not a good one.

Very very dark, lyrics… I do not like horror stories these lyrics echo them…

I vaguely remember when this album came out and a couple of songs got played on the radio. My opinion hasn't changed much since then, it still sounds a bit dreary, but now I can see how this would appeal to some people. But my god the album was a long one! Why did it need to be almost an hour and a half long??? Wouldn't really want to listen to this one again. Best: Breathless Worst: O Children

Another 'is this must hear?' And the answer is no. You can go your entire life without needing to hear this, though the song harry and hermione dances to in deathly hallows makes that scene something special. Nick cave should be on this list, I suppose, maybe. But not this album. 2 stars because it shouldn’t be here.

O children was good

Liked the intros, but not my style.

It's a very relaxing album. I wouldn't say it's exactly notable or innovative. I could hear this at a coffeehouse

I’ve tried to like Nick Cave for years, but it just doesn’t take. He bores me.

Meh. This really wasn't for me.

Just not my style

A lot of the elements that I enjoy (some blues, some alt rock, good vocals, fun lyrics) but the gestalt was unenjoyable

Not my vibe

Liked the gospel backup, lyrics were a bit dark at times

2nd disc better than 1st. liked gospel choir. overall kinda "meh"

Mostly did not enjoy, although this will be a theme in my upcoming reviews as well because I'm having a not enjoying music phase. But still I think this was bad

Score for this album just kept getting lower. I liked some stuff around the start then it was all downhill. Stop making albums this long, they would all be better cut in half. Will I listen to again: 0%

not great

Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No

There's good stuff here, particularly instrumentally. Some lyrics are interesting but this feels like an anthem for boomers with only just above average music taste. Maybe earlier stuff was better.

I do like Mr. Cave and his bands music but not so much this album.

Not my jam, but background music okay

This is like putting Tom Waits through a grinder and taking off all the edges but still ending up with a (much smoother) ball of shit.

I had never heard of Nick Cave prior to starting this listening project. This is something like the 5th album that we have been subjected to. Literally zero Nick Cave albums are good, but can you imagine the albums he made that didn't make this list? That being said, this is not his worse album that I've heard. Hopefully we've exhausted his albums on this list... Really what I couldn't shake from while listening to this album was it sounded like Jason Segel's character from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, who wrote and performed a musical(s) in the voice of an exaggerated Dracula voice. A lot of this album sounded like that but it wasn't funny.

Unique but not for me, won't give another listen

Bombastische musical.

I thought it was alright. O Children was the best one IMO.

Uhh almost okay, just strange lyrics that I couldn’t get into. Singer almost sounded like the lead singer from The National.

It was alright. Nothing too notable.

I was feeling the first few tracks on this album, but I think this is the kind of sound I don't want or need an entire album for. I can see myself enjoying some of these songs in isolation, but an hour is just too much for me. Not wild about this one overall.

Bit of a mixed bag, some songs on here I really enjoyed having never heard of the band before. There are some songs that I really struggled though as well though. Best song - Supernaturally

Australian band

I don't think this is my kind of music. I can appreciate how it's objectively good, and there were moments I enjoyed, but the whole thing seemed kind of melodramatic in an exhausting way, and no individual track really stood out to me.

I don't get Nick Cave. And I don't get this. This is like Bruce Springsteen without the talent. It's just sort of this one note show tuney way over the top single note thing. Not. Good.

was a bit too long for me but it had great song but it didnt took me on a journey

Very theatrical with a lot of big sounds. Unrelenting power which felt overwhelming at times.

Background music but yay Harry potter song 🤣 it's okay but nothing special

Didn't have much of an identity to me, however I haven't listened to the entire album. Gave me background music vibes.

Reminds me of Springsteen and someone else that I can't put my finger on. No song stood out for my. It isn't bad, but it did not do anything for me. Most of the songs feel like they were written for some poignant moment on a show. 2/5

This is probably the most pretentious thing I've ever listened to. There's maybe 4 solid songs on this double album.

Favorite tracks: O Children and Supernaturally I like the genre, this just seems a little too disorienting.

Nice storytelling and tones throughout, but didnt keep my interest much

It's interesting but not really for me

I'll probably never listen to this one again. 80 min of songs that really don't compel me at all

Too long 2.5

Finally tackled this one because fuck is it long for no reason. Not bad but not interesting, better than the Nick Cave’s other group album that I got on this list (2.5/5)

Dosadnoooo

Probably best enjoyed off your tits and yearning for depression. Quite unorthodox without being experimental. Both interesting and dull. Not made to sound catchy. a bit self-indulgent.

This album was not super bad but not something I’m going to be seeking out again.

Considering this is a Nick Cave creation (the guy who is behind The Birthday Party and their trash heap of an album Junkyard), there were some actually decent songs on this. None of it was good enough to make me a fan of him or their work. I'm hesitant to give this a 2 based on his other work, but this might actually deserve that. 2/5

I don't really like his singing voice - musically this is decent. This album goes on a long time though, overstays it's welcome.

I appreciate the weirdness, but it’s not my type of weird.

Thanks, I hate it Stefan likes it

not for me

There were actually a few tracks on here that I liked, but a lot more that I very much disliked.

Second time around with this guy. Wasn't impressed the first time. 2nd time around, I thought, he just trying to be annoying with the double album, 2 hours thing. Cut it short and move along, please. Nothing outright terrible, except the flute part halfway through the album, but nothing that made me want to revisit either. I found myself bored. He did make me think of my beautiful wife, with Babe, You Turn Me On. But even then, I didn't like the song much. I kept calling him Nick Cage over the weekend and it got me thinking, what is worse, Cave music or Cage movies. Turns out, I can't really remember much of either one of these guys output. Nick Cage was in Fast Times. He wins. 2

2 Nick Cave is an artist I really want to like - I mean, the guy is supposed a brooding, lyrical icon after all - but I’m still not impressed after listening to this album. After being disappointed with his effort at piano ballads on The Boatman’s Call, I thought I just had to hold out for something more conventional to really understand his charm, but unfortunately I found this even more boring than his piano stuff. As suggested by the title, this is really two separate albums paired together into one release, and I gotta say, there is nothing interesting going on in the the first half, Abattoir Blues. This is rock music at its most generic, and even though I really tried to attach myself to the topics and themes he’s writing about in these songs, the overall songwriting seems to alternate between goofy and bland in such a way that it made it hard for me to dial in on anything he was trying to convey. I picked up that there’s a religious angle he was going for on a few songs, but between the cheesy choruses on songs like Get Ready For Love and Hiding All The Way or his weirdly numerous references to fingering women, I just really couldn’t get too into it. The saving grace from this side is the Johnny Cash-dedicated elegy Let the Bells Ring. The Lrye of Orpheus marks the start of the second album, titled the same, and the change in sound is immediately noticeable. From what I’ve read online, this half is much more indicative of Cave’s typical output, featuring songwriting that I appreciated a bit more - it reminded me of a heavier Leonard Cohen in some ways - but even then I feel like it was only a small improvement above the first half. It has its highs with the title track (best lyric on the album by far is “Eurydice appeared brindled in blood/And she said to Orpheus/If you play that fucking thing down here/I'll stick it up your orifice!”) and my personal favorite song here, Supernaturally, which has the most enjoyable chorus of anything on the album, dare I say bordering on epic. Unfortunately, my least favorite moment is also here in the awkward and out-of-place ballad Baby, You Turn Me On (seriously why does this guy keep mention fingering?) Also, despite being the most popular track on Spotify across his whole discography, I wasn’t too impressed with O Children. I mean, it was effective enough for a closer, but the best this guy has? Really? I really feel like either of these albums released individually could have gotten a 2.5 or even a 3 from me on a good day, but mushed together as is results in an album that feels too long to be this mediocre. I’m still open to listening to more of Cave’s stuff, but let it be known this is Strike 2.

Bad bad seeds.

Jesus .. 1 hr and 22 min .. Not even going to try to break this down by track, just gonna go for bulk effect and highlights / lowlights. Hiding All Away is a pretty cool, bluesy song. It has a rawness and groove that reminds me of White Strips. Weird lyrics, but I'm into it. Builds to quite a climax at the end whose bass line almost reminds me of a Whamola solo I saw from Primus years ago. The next couple of songs are kind of meh. Nature Boy reminds me a bit of Bowie in his delivery, but the song itself is pretty standard / boring. Kind of spaced out for the next several. Nothing much jumping out at me until I got to Spell. Something about that song I really like. The closer O Children does a good job of making its own space to expand into. Probably the most effective song on the album. I think overall, this album does fine service, but is not anything that I find particularly compelling. Maybe I'm not into the Nick Cave aesthetic, but generally I find the songs to be kind of boring in structure and execution. There's nothing outright "bad" here, but nothing compelling me to listen closely or ever again. 2 / 5

Skipped a few songs. I also was not really actively listening to this just had it on in the background I found it hard to focus on it

I didn't get it.

Gah, what a bloated corpse of an album. Nick Cave is such a tryhard gothy boy and it's a real turnoff. That said, this some of the best musicianship I've heard on a Cave joint. If you pulled his lyrics off of these songs, they'd probably be fantastic. Unfortunately, it's got the stank of Nick's garbage, self-indulgent, "ooh, I'm so dark and edgy" songwriting all over it. And that's a lot of garbage songwriting because this album is WAY too long. Cut a third of them and you might have a half-decent album. Kill your darlings, Nick. You write songs about it all the time. You should be good at it by now.

Don’t love Nick cave but the album seemed ok

I don’t hate it but boy is this a long album that all starts to blend together way too early on. I honestly think there is a good single album in here but the double was not for me.

Uninteresting. I will never get the hype about Nick Cave. His voice isn’t great and his songs can drag out.

It was really boring with slightly odd lyrics and just kept on losing my interest: for what it was I felt it dragged on quite a bit and ended up sounding like a really shitty rock musical

Not my jam!

Not bad but not really my thing

Very bland

Thought I’d like it after the second song…nope. So long and singer’s voice is the same throughout and boring. Couldn’t wait for it to be over. 5.3-10.

A couple good songs I liked

Honestly I think getting the murder ballads album first soured me a lot on this band. I would usually say I like darker, melancholy music, but apparently not all of it! Problems for me include the slow pace of almost every song, the singer's voice, and the small variety in style between songs. The end of Supernaturally was my favorite part of this double album. That's another thing, if this was one album I would have rated it higher. As a double album, it was tooooough for me to finish.

This could be the best album ever, but I just don’t like the dude’s voice or the style of music very much. Can’t get into it.

A couple songs I enjoyed and I can see how some people would find this album very good, just not my vibe

Irgendwie nichts für mich

One petty upfront gripe before listening: I really hate it when albums have multiple or dual names. It's just so pretentious and obnoxious. You really couldn't figure out ONE name for your fucking album?? C'mon! Now that I’m actually listening, here’s my legit gripe: an hour and 22 minutes?!? That’s too long! Damn. It’s too much. I enjoy the brooding intensity of some songs, but had it been kept to a tight and focused 45 minute album tops, I would have been able to enjoy it more. It was such a slog. And there’s a serious lack of variety here, there’s long stretches of monotonous droning that are hard to endure. My husband mentioned that the vocals have a later years Eddie Vedder tone to them, which I liked. I think I could get into Nick Cave, but not this album.

I don't believe I was familiar with any of these songs previously. There is no reason for a double album. This is the second Nick Cave album on this list and this one was better than that one.

Not a fan

- not doing it for me. Something about the guy’s voice?

I was expecting so much more given the hype about Nick Cave. Very disappointing.

This album had moments that made me think Tom Waits snuck into another band. While I appreciated the rock aesthetics, I found myself skipping most songs.

A few good seeds in this album from the bad ones. Never been a fan, but I know many are.

I stopped following Nick Cave when Blixa left the band. This record is not as great as the 12 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds records leading up to Nocturama. Doubt I’ll listen to it again but if it comes on I won’t turn it off.

Really liked the first song, and realllly didn't like the rest. Scrapes by with a 2.

Mid… Except Oh Children.. Harry potter

At this point it's clear I simply don't care for Nick Cave. His voice is great but there's not enough going on for me to truly enjoy his style.

I got in to the alternative stuff for a bit but this wasn’t part of it. Can see how it influenced some bands though

this is ok. feels really long. not really my vibe.

As soon as i saw nick cave again i was infinitive on giving a 1, however between a mixture of some not so bad songs and the last one (harry potter!) i’ve decided this album is not nearly as terrible as his others. maybe if i had a few more listens with me he could even get to a 3, but for now he stays a strong 2.

Well I can say that it's not *anywhere* near as bad as the previous THREE albums with Nick Cave (there's no way he didn't blackmail the author/s.). I try to stay objective but thus far when literally more than 1% of the albums thus far are Nick Cave or his crappy offshoots I start to get a little itchy seeing his name pop up this morning... OK OK OK to be fair...this is different. And a different singer would have made this album pretty decent. It really is far better than the previous Nick Cave I've heard - bigger and better mixes, less dry, and better arrangements: in many songs there is clearly more emphasis on melodic craft and instrumentation than his typical gargling vocals. There are definite highlights here. Some songs like "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" even succeed despite him, or generously perhaps... his voice is mixed low enough to actually compliment the song and not be a distraction. There's almost a touch of David Byrne in this? "Nature Boy" is another nice one - a dash of middle/late Springsteen perhaps? A touch of Warren Zevon in some of the slower ballads? "Supernaturally" has a rousing feel to it, like a Spirit of the West shanty. It's all more creative than I'd expected based on previous (more punk/aggressive/noisy) recordings - points for that. I only wish the rest of this (long) album could be like the non-gargle-voice tracks, and some of the slower ones do plod a bit. Honestly - cut this down to a 7-8 song single album and I'd have definite interest. 5/10 2 stars.

“Life passes by at a low interest rate.” Damn, Nick Cave can turn a phrase. Still, I didn’t find the music as engaging as some other Bad Seeds albums.

I know Nick Cave a little but this is the first album I’ve listened to. Very distinctive voice and style. Although ‘Let the Bells Ring’ sounds a bit like Looking Glass. The song Spell would be a good mix with ‘Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon’ either Urge Overkill or Neil Diamond’s version. So maybe not as distinctive as previously stated. Album a bit Halloween-y without being overly maudlin. The refrain (the singing, not the words) in Abbatoir Blues sounds downright cheerful. Hiding All Away is really good. Some songs went a little too long, as did the album.

10/03/2022 Retrospective listen. This one was.....definitely an album! It was a bit of a fight to finish this one. Some of these songs were unbearable for me personally. Others are pretty good actually, but as an album, this just does NOT work for me. I also saw Nick Cave's image on his spotify artist profile and I was like "oh, so THAT'S who that vato is." I feel like I have seen him everywhere! But yeah, did not enjoy listening to him and probably won't listen to him again! He is obviously very musically tapped in to whatever his vision is/was, but it just doesn't work for me and my tastes and preferences

Meh. I’m not a huge fan of Nick Drake’s voice to begin with and just wasn’t excited about any of the songs on this.

I forget who it was that described The Bad Seeds as punks who can read music. Albums like this show up the inadequacy of the ranking system. I can appreciate the craft that went into this album, and it seems obvious that this collection of songs will speak to people in a way that no one and nothing has ever spoken to them and change their lives and etc etc. So, saying "I didn't like this" is both correct and uselessly subjective. A couple of songs did catch my attention, but it's more abrasive and/or less melodic than the Nick Cave stuff I do like ("Push the Sky Away" and "The Mercy Seat", as respective examples). Oh well...

I have always considered Nick Cave a bit pretentious

Koffor e da så masse nick cave her

Unfortunately I knew as soon as this started that I was not going to enjoy it, and I was mostly correct. One song saved this from being 1 star for me: “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” and to a lesser extent, “Nature Boy.” The rest of it was not my taste.

didnt finish tooo white

Just couldn't get into this one.

Never really a Nick Cave fan, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus is okay, not really my scene though. 2/5.

Intellectually I feel like this album is decent but I just didn’t enjoy it that much. Maybe I felt like it was trying too hard.

Not my thing

17 mediocre songs. 4/10

I don't imagine I'd be listening to this album again in totality

I always enjoy listening to a Nick Cave song. I never enjoy listening to more than one Nick Cave song.

Just felt pretentious and too much for me. Occasionally a song or two would have good moments, but not enough to bring me back to this one.

Shit... not this guy again. This was fine, I don't like this style of music.

Songs that are stories Fable of the Brown Ape was mad funny and I actually liked it The Lyre of Orpheus was also good Nature Boy was good Overall good, just not something I'd listen to really

Not a fan of nick cave and his repetitive melancholy.

0/3 for Nick Cave albums for me. Lead off track was fine, but the rest was more of the same. Double albums are exhausting.

Some good stuff here. A bit bloated with non-essential tracks. That's what a double album can do. I'm sure people out there love the whole thing.

Enjoyable. But don't need to listen again.

Couldn't get into this. Nick Cave's voice doesn't do it for me, and I just wasn't feeling the emotion behind the songs. 2.5/5 stars

This album is musically excellent. I can hear that this should be a classic, but for some reason I just couldn't get into the vibe of this one. Individually I think some tracks would be enjoyable, but as a whole the double album feels like a bit of a slog to sit through. Maybe I'm in the wrong headspace, maybe it's just not for me.

Too long, didn't Listen

Not a great singer, backing singers overused, just annoying after not too long. Enjoyed Let The Bells ring (no backing singers - thank fuck). It's ok, doubt I'd listen to it again. Oh and it's a long listen. Brevity Nick, brevity.

Not my favorite story album. Some decent songs but some are quite abrasive and melancholy without being touching.

Couple of great songs but most songs were a miss

This double album is the 13th from Australian alt rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The first half of the double album - 'Abattoir Blues' - is the more rock and roll themed side with a bluesy feel. While the second half - 'The Lyre of Orpheus' - is gentler, quieter, and more elegant. This album was an interesting step into gothic rock for me. Not sure how I like it, but the music on this album was a great listen either way.

I only knew 'Into My Arms' before this album - I expecting more of that vibe. The gothic rock took me by surprise! Not for me, but I can see what they were going for. I enjoyed 'There She Goes, My Beautiful World', it was more upbeat than the rest. 2.5 stars, really but I doubt I'll return so 2 stars it is.

2/5 naaaah

It certainly wasn't horrible to listen to, but I wouldn't want to hear it again. No recognized songs

Not a lot of enjoyment out of this one. It just kept going forever.

Fuck this shit man

This was my first time listening to a full album from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I've heard a few tracks from Nick Cave, and the band The Birthday Party was a previous suggestion on this list - so I've heard music from Cave before. I still don't like it. Most of the album was trying to reach up towards okay. Cave's music is dark and gloomy, putting many of his tracks in the "don't like" category. "Fable of the Brown Ape" sealed the deal on this album. It's the worst of what I don't like from Cave.

Oh no, it's another Nick Cave album. And it's a fucking hour and a half long, oh god. Okay, I'll give it a go, but if it's as bad as the previous one I will just skip my way through it. First song is decent, but song 2 is already annoying again. The music is okay; every time a song starts I start getting into it, but I guess there is just something about his voice that is not for me. He just sounds very constipated on most of the songs, especially those on Volume 2. Overall Volume 1 was ok-ish, but just not for me. 2 stars, I guess?

Absolutely not a good fit for my mood today. Under other circumstances, I still wouldn't like it very much, but I wouldn't loathe it the way I do 1 star entries. 2 stars.

it was fine

More aggressive out the gate than I was expecting. Get Ready For Love is a wall of noise. Got an oogy-boogy psycho circus kinda feel. Track 2 is a ballad with mouth harps. Ooh, the drums just kicked in. It's a good one. Feels deserty. Track 2 is thumping, yes melancholic and beautiful. Track 3, There Is A War Comin, has big stomps and gospel choirs. Track 4, Messiah Ward, brings more chill and interesting sounds. Steady slow beat. There She Goes My Beautiful World, big production, not very interesting. All these songs are too long. All in all, I dislike the bombastic songs and much prefer the quieter ones.

2/5 - Nope.

Meh. I didnt finish

Kinda reminds me of Leonard Cohen. Not much of a fan. The melodies are not very melodic, and I like that in a song.

Just awful. Clunking and dull. Voice is painful to listen to. Some of the lyrics OK so should probably have just written this stuff down and entered high school poetry contest instead.

This really isn't it for me. Kind of surprised how many track plays some songs have too on Spotify to be honest. 4/10.

Not my bag

The lyrics are interesting and I generally like the music, but combined they create something that I definitely wouldn't listen to again.

Bastante medicore

This album is white rice. Bland. Could I live off it for every meal? Technically yes, although likely with some severe vitamin deficiencies. Would I ever choose it for my next meal? No, not unless there were a tasty main dish paired with it. I know 1001 albums are a lot, but I cannot understand how this is on the list. I do not care for the lead singer’s voice. Even the Wikipedia page had nothing remarkable to offer. No ground breaking aspect to speak of. Just plain white rice.

This album was both loud and annoying. A few lyrics kept it from being a 1.

boring

Listening to an album shouldn't feel like work.

I listened to this whole fucking double album and I don't remember a single thing about it

Everyone's favorite edgy guy is back! Honestly didn't like this as much as Murder Ballads, even if I was kinda looking forward to hearing his (more) normal music. This didn't make much of an impact on me, and was too long to focus on it well enough
