Reviews (page 2 of 7)
This was fine, if bland. Millennial garage rock with a bit of a retro sheen. I liked it well enough, but no one needs to hear this album before they die. Fave Songs: Pressure Point, Long Time Coming, Nightmare Part II, Confusion
Kind of a rock meets rockabilly sound? some of the intros remind me of the stray cats. weird and nice. but ultimately not something I'd probably listen to again very often.
An interesting mix of styles... reminds me a lot of garage rock from the 60's... a la The Chocolate Watchband... occasionally mixed with a Radiohead vibe (I can easily see Thom Yorke delivering in the style of Pressure Point or Havana Gang Brawl). The album has some interesting variety, cool percussion and a pretty approachable style. Havana Gang Brawl is the strongest track for me, with the remaining being an interesting listen.
Not bad but not good either.
Some decent moments.
Not a bad album of indie-alternative rock. Better than I expected based on the 2.5 star rating from allmusic.com. Havana Gang is a pretty good tune. Nightmare part 2 also pretty good. It's a ystery to me why this pretty inconsequential band made this list, but I enjoyed listening. 3.5 stars
These guys are fine.
An unexpected treasure trove of potential playlist and soundtrack gems. 3 zebra futons out of 5 🦓🦓🦓
Hugely irritated by them at the time. This seems alright though.
It comes to a point (album number 692 on a list of 1001) that you run out of things to say about an album of this quality. It's forgettable, and it's pretty shocking that this came out in 2004 -- this is the sort of dated trite I would expect out of the 1980s, doing this in the 21st century is downright embarrassing. All I can say is, whoever killed The Zutons, thank you.
zuton deez nuts
I was willing to give Who Killed the Zutons a chance, coming from the tail-end of the golden age of Indie Rock, surely it would have at least a taste of something special on it? Unfortunately not, as this album is incredibly underwhelming. It's a very stagnant experience, with the songs really not feeling all that different from one another. The album lacks drive as a whole, with a lot of the songs feeling really empty. It really does feel like a bunch of tracks thrown together with very little care as to making them sound cohesive. More than anything though, the album is just boring. The instrumentals are very safe and generic, and the vocals are weirdly off-putting. It's definitely to this album's detriment that it was included in a list like this, as it is by no means a classic album, and if I hadn't gone into it with that expectation I may have given it a little more grace.
Not picking on <...checks top of page again to remember the name of the band...> The Zutons in particular but they feel like yet another 21st century "been there" rock band, most of which is so unmemorable I've already lost the memory of any of the songs not 3 minutes after it's all over. As for this specifically I think if it were released in 1971 instead of 2004 I'd think a lot more highly of it - which I admit is 101% unfair - but I didn't fight for you all in WWII so I would lose my freedom to enjoy or not enjoy whatever the hell I want so in keeping with a love it or leave it theme, I am indeed leaving it. Also I hate that honking sax. 4/10 2 stars.
Here is a list of things this album sounds like, according to the wikipedia entry: Musically, the sound of the album has been described as folk, garage rock and indie pop, rooted in blues rock; the Coral; Love; the Animals; swampy blues, '60s psych-rock, offbeat folk; the Beatles, the La's and Shack; Led Zeppelin, Traffic and Frank Zappa; Dr. John, old-ska, trashy ’60s garage rock, Johnny Cash; goofy B-movie atmosphere; 'soul-funk-voodoo vibe'; ska and country; Spaghetti Westerns; Eastern European folk music; the Ink Spots; garage boogie; doo-wop vocal harmonies; Eric Burdon; "Crosstown Traffic" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience; "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding; Stax; the Zombies; Dire Straits; Franz Ferdinand; Tina Turner; and Merseybeat. All mixed up in a bucket, and don't skimp on the saxophone. I think I'm gonna be sick... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aczPDGC3f8U)
“Who Killed the Zutons” is an amiable record with thoughtful, esoteric arrangements: much goes on, but the record isn’t busy. This relaxed, bazaar vibe carries over to the songwriting, which is thought-out and tuneful yet feels barely there. A glass of lemonade and its gone. Nice guys, I believe; I may have met one of them years back.
I have indeed heard buskers play on the side streets of Liverpool - can I die now? More a jumble-sale than a landfill; videlicet Zutons are a mild improvement over Klaxons if still unmemorable
Hubo muchos y mucho mejores discos en 2004: Nick Cave- Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus, Arcade Fire- Funeral, Wilco – A Ghost Is Born, Bart Davenport – Game Preserve, Interpol – Antics, Tom Waits – Real gone, Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse – Good news for people who love bad news, Brian Wilson – Smile, Lambchop – Aw c’mon / No you c’mon, The Dears – No cities left, The Divine Comedy – Absent friends, The Delgados – Universal audio, MORRISSEY - You are the quarry, Kasabian-Kasabian, Sonic Youth- Sonic Nurse, THE ORGAN - THE ORGAN, ADAN GREEN - FRIENDS OF MINE, Ye (Kanye West)- The College dropout, Keane- Hopes and feras, TV on the radio- Desperate, Youth, Blood, Green Day - American Idiot, PINBACK-Summer in Abaddon...
I'm increasingly convinced that people just forgot how to make and enjoy good music sometime around the year 2000.
Gibt es irrelevante Musik? Das gehört dazu.
It’s not often that an album makes no impression on me at all, but that was the case here. Nothing memorable, and nothing to report.
Reasons why this mediocre and easily forgettable indie album is on then list. # 1: Thanks for reading my list.
Who indeed killed the Zutons? They had a unique approach to indie rock in the early 2000s with quirky lyrics and instrumentation. While certainly memorable, I don't find it to be particularly amazing. I even found it grating at times for it's personality. Never boring, certainly talented, largely not for me.
I have copies of the Zuton’s first two albums that I bought from charity shops in secondary school. I always much preferred their second with the original version of Valerie. It’s been years since I’ve listened to this, and I’m not sure it’s quite held up. There a couple of pseudo-Country ballads that are quite good. I think my biggest complaint is that for a band that has arguably one of the more interesting quirks of line-up for an Indie band, not just a saxophonist but a female saxophonist at that, and then they just don’t utilise her in a very interesting way. Some of this music is begging for some ripping John Zorn alto riffs over the top, and instead we get some milquetoast horn squeaks. I don’t think it’s a bad album by any means. Just inessential, and so kinda baffling
Not for me. Perfectly serviceable etc but that’s about that.
Poor man's White Stripes
Ok, but not for me 2/5
Nogal generieke muziek.
Why must I listen to this before I die? It was fine, some pretty good songs, but also very forgettable. Doesn’t seem particularly unique, influential, or important to make this list. Decent sound, some good hooks, but not a lot stands out to me about this albums. Decent enough listen, just low impact for me.
Had some fun alternative riffs with like a spring sound but I can remember one song so not my favorite
More kind-of-forgettable early-2000s indie. These guys kind of sound like a band that would be playing in a beer garden or something. The album was fine, but it seems pretty out of place on this list. This isn't even the album with their biggest hits on it!
bit bland
Eh. Too retro. Squirrel mutt dippers
The scumbag guitarist actually deserves to be killed. Boyan Chowdhury is putrid human garbage.
“Who Killed …… The Zutons?” Who really fucking cares?
Yecch. Very bad songs.
I don't know who killed the Zutons, but if they weren't already dead, I'd be tempted. This is bad even for early 2000s. This sounds like a bunch of kids were in a ska band in high school, then heard The White Stripes and failed miserably at aping that sound, while one of them refused to learn something other than sax. This keeps threatening to get interesting but never does. Closest it comes is "Confusion" which almost sounds like early 70s Kinks, but there's a persistent sax that sounds like a clown's bike horn. What exactly was the idea here? *checks wikipedia* "The band was originally a four-piece, before Payne's girlfriend Abi Harding began joining The Zutons on stage for a couple of songs mid-set, playing simple saxophone lines. The other band members liked the way her saxophone enhanced their sound and Harding became a full member, contributing vocals and sax." ...dear god...
Yeah, uh…how is it remarkable? It deserves nothing more than that, especially in the shadow of albums not on this list.
Yea…no thanks
I did not need to listen to this album before my death. Landfill indie that belongs at the bottom of Camden Lock
This almost feels like a parody album for something I don't understand. Really disjointed and weirdly amateur feeling. It bounces to so many sounds but doesn't feel like it lands something that works even once. Disliked this
No thanks. At times it's like they had a closet full of instruments and felt the need to use them all. The lead vocals are not interesting, they sound like a department store catalog. Nightmare Part II has a jaw harp. Get the saxophone out if this whole album. Are those spoons!?
Another shite enough album ffs. Can't tell if this was recorded in 1979, 1999 or 20009.
I was hooked immediately from the opening chords.
music is love
Yes I liked this one a lot.
Really fun, good variety awesome album
Top debut album, remember it from the time.
Zuton Fever is a lot of fun, the tottering, erratic beat kind of feels like the whole thing is going to stumble over any second. The build and climax of Pressure Point is probably amazing live. This whole thing is pretty quirky and lots of fun from beginning to end. Lots of variety. Really enjoyed this one, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them before. They are my kind of shit, especially in my late teens/early twenties. 4.5/5
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Completely unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I do not know them at all Pre-Listen Thoughts: I have no idea what to expect from this but the cover is fun Favorite track(s): Pressure Point, Ling Time Coming Post-Listen Thoughts: Based on the artwork, I thought it would be a little more psychedelic/experimental. But I still really liked it. This was a complete unknown for me, I had no idea who these people were or what this would sound like. It’s always exciting to get an unknown, even if I don’t end up loving it but I dead really like this a lot and we’ll probably revisit and explore this band’s other work.
Holy Heck! How have I never heard of The Zutons? I sincerely enjoyed this fun album! I love Indie from the 2000's and this just hit in all the right ways but was new for me. Great great great! Entering into rotation for sure.
The website just ate my review. Suffice to say, another fantastic 1001 discovery.
Not super interesting, but I really like the 2000s garage rock sound.
frenetic and fast paced and nice n energetic!
Big fan of this one
A new group for me. I liked most of the album. Favorite song, "Confusion" This is one album I would definitely add to my collection if I still purchased albums. I will listen to this album again.
Did not expect to recognize a song from MVP Baseball 2005
Could fit right in a Left 4 Dead game. Influences of what I think is some old blues with modern rock rhythms.
I listened twice, and this one is making it to my rotation for sure. What a fun album! 9/10
Quirky indiesque rock with a remarkable depth ranging from dreamy-proggy Radiohead stuff to straight ass White Stripes galore. awesome addition!
Great album
Love this! Had never heard it before.
Why have I never head of The Zutons? This is fantastic and fun.
This was a surprise for me, really great songs and really amazing vibe. Connecting classic rock to the 2000s, very cool sound and good songs.
7.5/10
Loved it! Great music. Good melodies.
This album is exactly my vibe. Maybe it's not very inventive but I enjoyed it so much!
Bop and a half. Never heard of this group before but they’re added to the rotation.
I had forgotten about this record. That was a mistake.
Quirky, grungy, musically interesting, I liked this a lot. It's going into regular rotation for me.
Faixa favorita: Zuton Fever/Dirty Dancehall
I don't have much to say about this album, other than that I really, really like it. It's just a very stylish, fun album to listen to. Love the vocals, love the brass, really enjoy the whole feel of it. It feels weird giving such a high mark without a long explanation as to why I reached that conclusion, but it's just my kinda thing. 5/5
Aa
A band I've never heard and blew my mind!
Fun and catchy!
goated
A strong album from the mid 00s indie scene. Strong influence from 60s and 70s rock, especially the protest songs during Vietnam. I had not heard of this band prior, but I’m definitely going to look into more of their albums.
Incredibly raw and energetic album. Solid!!!
Liked it. Good road trip music
Surprisingly refreshing rock tracks with some tasty brass.
I love this album, especially the sax in the first song. Each had interesting lyrics and interesting music.
Didn't expect to like it so much 5 stars
This album fucking rules. I've loved it since I first heard it.
Who Killed…… The Zutons? is the sound of a band that walked into a garage, dropped a bag of psych rock, Britpop, and swampy soul on the floor, and said, “Cool, now let’s scream about it.” It’s unhinged in a fun way. Like a bar fight that turns into a dance-off. Every track is sweaty, swaggering, and just drunk enough to feel dangerous. ⸻ Rating: 4.2/5 Short Review: Garage rock gets funky and mildly possessed. Like if The Coral got into a fistfight with a haunted saxophone. Favorite Track: “Pressure Point” – obviously. This one’s like a panic attack in a disco suit. You will throw your arms around dramatically. Consistency With Me: 6.4/10 Why: Look, I admire the manic energy. But I’m more controlled chaos—dry, clinical spiral. The Zutons are like “let’s have a full breakdown while wearing sunglasses indoors.” That’s more your energy when the coffee hits weird. ⸻
Pleasantly surprised! This was fun. Nothing strongly stood out, but I still quite enjoyed this album. Fun instrumentals and vocal work.
I haven’t heard this one in years, loved it when it originally came out and really enjoyed revisiting it today. There’s not one song on this one that I didn’t enjoy. Top Track - Remember Me
My first thought was "another one of those albums that probably has no business being on here" and in terms of needing to hear this before you die, that's probably true. But I didn't expect this album to be so much fun. It's one of those albums that sound like a playlist with different bands, because every song is in a slightly different style, but all convincing and fun to listen to. Groundbreaking? No. Massively influential? Not as far as I can tell. A real gem and a pleasure to listen to? Absolutely.
Didn't know this one. WHY? This is so mply great entertainment, songwriting, reminiscing of quirky seventies blues rock, while at the same time being modern and eclectic, funky and fun, with darkness and humour to it, a great production and near flawless execution. If you like The Kinks, you may like it, if you like Capt. Beef heart you may also, if you are preferring 90ies alt over 90ies Madonna you might as well . If you're a die hard Hair Metall afficionados or think The Stones are the best, spare yourself....
What a great indie album. Every song sounds different but is interesting in its own way, and it never lets up or gets boring. Really enjoyable to listen to and I could not believe that I have never heard of this band before. Would listen again and again.
Where have I been and why am I only NOW listening to The Zutons. No two songs are alike, every one is great. My favorites??? THE WHOLE ALBUM.
10/10 holy shit, why is this so much fun! more rock that sounds like this please!
Great sac moment
I was fully prepared not to like this but I can’t help but loving it honestly.
Nostalgia and I've not heard it in ages. Zuton Fever, Pressure Point... Loved it.
I really love this album. I remember buying it as a kid when it came out simply because the Zutons sounded funny and the album cover and title was really intriguing. I think it's an absolutely belter, really varied, some great lyrics and sound. It's a shame they faded away, their next album wasn't so good. But we did see they are Glastonbury last year and they were great!
I’d forgotten about The Zutons. I knew the singles from this album but had never listened to this. I’m surprised - I really enjoyed it! They’re a band whose songs I’ve enjoyed on the radio but I’ve never investigated further. Downloaded this one!
More than half of the songs were shockingly good for a band that I’ve never heard of. Love the style - upbeat and catchy, sort of retro. But there is also a lot of variety and creativity. Honesty nothing bad to say about it. Really impressive.
The saxophone is a fun touch for this band. Funky British rock from 2004 with a good edge. Good stuff
New spin on old psych but done well. I like the zany aspect to it but there are also some really great songs on here.
excellent! Great country-rock folk sound. Really enjoyed it a lot!
Love it!
Album 619 of 1001 The Zutons - Who Killed...... The Zutons? (2004) Rating : 4.5 / 5 Some more lads from Liverpool. First heard of this album when I was listening through the playlist and it stuck with me. I was actually halfway through a favorite song on this album on Spotify when I saw this was album of the day. "Not a Lot to Do", a head nod to those lazy Sundays has become a favorite track. Described as "alternative rock with a retro flair". That works. Good album.
Always nice.
Ha! This is great, that closing track just leaves me wanting more. It feels like a bit of a slow start but really picks up after You Will You Won't. Looking forward to giving this another spin. Fave: You Will You Won't/
Never heard of the Zutons before, but I really like their sound. Very kinda 60s-vintage edgy rock and roll sound but very clean with great grooves, moody chord progressions and voicings, and just an overall fun musical product. The staccato strings at the end of Havana Gang Brawl were a cool touch that I enjoyed, but almost every song was really great. I did enjoy the first half of the album better than the second half because it had much more energy. I did listen to it twice -- five stars.
Great album, great sax
This was delightful. Would like to check out more from them.
I only knew The Zutons as the guys who originally did Valerie. This is just a great sound I’d listen to again and again. Just perfect at what it’s doing
I loved this! Never even heard of them. Happy to hear and played several times. Now in My Faves playlist.
Has to be a personal 5, love every track
Buried treasure! I've never heard of this band before, but I love them wholeheartedly now. This is such a cool vibe, I feel like I'm hearing modern day CCR in a harmonious blend of R.E.M. and a pinch of Tom Petty. But make it folksy punk somehow? This is some sorcery, it's a wildly unique fusion that has become it's own wonderful thing. I'm hooked, I'm a new fan now! I love this record. It is so melodic and sonically pleasing to get lost in.
This was another album that from its cheesy cover I was expecting to hate, but as I was going through it I was liking more and more of them. Very pleasant surprise
Zutons! Where have you been all my life? Such talent! So theatrical !
Favorite Tracks: Pressure Point Zuton Fever You Will You Won’t
I love this
Some albums just have this certain ear for great song structures. That's one of them.
Great album on the second play
Great from A to Z, nice finding!
My first listen of this I thought it was a fun enough example of early 2000s British indie rock, which is a genre I enjoy….. but I didn’t think it was anything special. My second listen, I changed my mind. This album is jam-packed full of excellently written songs, interesting vocals and cool storytelling. The infusions of other genres elevates it above a lot of its peers… I’m surprised I’ve never heard of these guys or this albums before starting this project. Albums like this are exactly what I was hoping to find through this list. Best tracks: Zuton Fever, Pressure Point, You Will You Won’t, Confusion, Railroad, Nightmare Part II, Not A Lot To Do
Never heard of them, but wish I had heard of them before
Tof, verrassend, om vrolijk van te worden
i used to love this when it came out. probably down to living in Liverpool and meeting Dave McCabe a few times. however in hindsight if it wasn't for the saxamaphone they would have fallen straight into the post La's scouse music trap where any band from liverpool after the La's just sounds like the La's.
Revelation alert! Take me on a trip to the planet Zuto. I need to meet the Zutons. This is a fantastic find. I’ve never heard of the Zutons and I want to hear more. It’s difficult for me explain why I like this so much. The music is quirky and Dave McCabe’s is perfect for it. Some of the music sounds like it could be from the band playing the Hill Valley town festival in Back to the Future III. I love it.
Great find. May be overrated. May not be. But I loved this sound. Indie rock.
I previously only knew one song by the Zutons, Valerie, which I love. In this album, even though no song really stood out, I thought it was great all the way through.
Love it from the end to the beginning. Very nice discovery!
Not buy but download
This one was just fun. I hadn’t heard of this one before, but I quite enjoyed it. 4/5
I think this was a great balance of weird/experimental, but also cohesive and strong. I really liked this. Also, the instrumentation was fun. It had like a big band feel at times. This also had a country feel at times, which was cool Liked Songs: "Zuton Fever" , "Pressure Point" , "You Will You Won't" , "Confusion" , "Havana Gang Brawl" , "Long Time Coming" , "Remember Me" , "Dirty Dancehall" , "Don't Ever Think (Too Much)"
Boa recomendação, adorei
I'm not disliking this, the saxophone is a cool rock instrument. I'm not loving all the self-referential titles (band, album, song). I don't love this, but it's a decent listen. This album is apparently "Dad Rock". I like You Will You Won't. I guess I'm going to revise my opinion of this album up every other song. Havana Gang Brawl is another good effort. I couldn't place where I knew these guys from but I love Valerie, both their version and Amy Winehouse's. This album is maybe a little too whimsical...there's a balance. Don't Ever Think (Too Much) is a good song to end on. I liked this a lot more than I thought I would going into it. It never does hit the heights of Valerie though.
There's something about an album from the decade you were born
Zuton Who Are...... The Zutons? I've Never Heard Of...... The Zutons. I Like...... The Zutons. Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton Zuton By Thomas J P Breare
deus abençoe o garage rock revival
Good indie rock from a band new to me. Yet, to my ears, a bit more diverse than "just" an indie band. Hence, why we do this: a "discovery" of something that may have slipped our music searches or the happenstance of our listening experiences. And this goes for genres for/in which I have no patience/interest. 4 "happy snappy indie" stars
4/5
That was fun. I dug this album. There were some lulls, but overall pretty decent.
Snazzy and jazzy
Good rock record
Never heard of these guys, but I really liked this album! I would definitely listen again or check out their other work. I would rate this at about a 3.75 which I will round to 4.
4/8
A lot of the "only big in the UK" albums I've gotten on here have been mid at best, so it was nice to get one that I actually enjoyed! The rhythms were good, and always fun to have some sax mixed in. "Railroad" "Nightmare Part II" and "Dirty Dancehall" were standouts for me
guitarra molesta
Never heard of them, but I dig it. I love the album art. Very early 70's creature feature.
Unexpected gem here. Really liked this one.
Great Its a vibe
Fun listen
I wasn’t too sure about this album when I listened to the first track, Zuton fever, but after listening to the second track, Pressure point, I really started to enjoy it. I thought you will you won’t was pretty good, and Confusion was quite beautiful. Havana gang brawl was so much fun! Nightmare part 2 was the next track that stood out to me. I thought the instrumentation was fantastic. Not a lot to do had a nice slow groove to it, and Remember me was fantastic. Dirty Dancehall was just that. Super fun music with just a slight edge to it. Don’t ever think (too much) was a great closer. 4/5 ⭐️ 140/1089
I've never heard of this album nor this band. I really enjoyed it. I hear a lot of kinks influence which is probably why I latched onto it
The first genre listed on Wikipedia is 'folk'. I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder. Very pleasant surprise, though. Definitely enjoyed the mix of styles.
Yeeeeeeehawwwwwwww long live the Zutons!!!! This album is a great chiller on a weekend morning, film soundtrack, accompaniment to walking around or a long drive. I remember listening to Havana Gang Brawl in my teens and it’s a song that’s stood the test of time, creeping back into my thoughts at different intervals over the last few years. Fun, groovy, David Mccabe’s vocals are audio velvet. The saxophone and guitar combo works so well. I want to listen to this album in a dingy Soho basement jazz bar with a knock off glass of wine in hand. Once again the scousers hit, and they hit well.
Album full of energy!
Enjoyed it, hits were good remember it well when it came out. Few repeat worthy tracks there
Now that’s what I call a proper indie album. Not some schmucks who think they’re so original and talented when in fact they’re only, well, schmucks. But some guys who has interesting ideas without pretending they’re new musical messiahs.
Loooooooooooove the instrumentals in this
22 years old. I absolutely loved Who Killed...... The Zutons? growing up. It’s a fun, fast-paced album full of energy and personality, and I also had a huge crush on the sax player back in the day! I was really looking forward to revisiting this one as it’s not an album I return to very often anymore. Listening back now, I still really love this album. The music is energetic and full of character, while the lyrics and storytelling are playful, quirky and really engaging. There’s a rawness and charm to The Zutons that makes the whole album feel lively and different from a lot of indie bands around at the time. It’s one of those albums that never takes itself too seriously and is all the better for it. Favourite tracks: “You Will You Won’t”, “Confusion” and “Remember Me” Least favourite tracks: Every song earns its place on the album Album artwork: Cool album cover, almost comic strip-like with loads going on visually
Beetje new jack swing achtig spul, specifiek heel erg zoals Jan Terlouw Jr & the Nightclub. FAVO: Railroad, Remember Me, You will you wont
Didn't expect much from this, but was pleasantly surprised. This was a cool, fun album.
This is a fun album. Its what the White Stripes could be if they were a full band. Almost a 5 star but i found the wandering between pop/rock and anlt country/pop a but distracting. Liked both styles but just found it a but difficult to settle as an album.
This record slaps hard with its dancehall groove and reflective lyrics. It was a pleasant surprise to my ears, offering a nice variety of tunes and reflections on life's complexities. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - You Will You Won't - Confusion - Dirty Dancehall - Moons And Horror Shows
It's a pleasant listen.
A pleasant mix of folk, rock, and some pop with consistent and good tracks throughout. I liked both the instrumentals and vocals. I preferred the softer more folk-y tracks. Unfortunately, there wasn't a truly great track on this album. 3.5 stars.
It's very retro-styled but also a cohesive, appealing and quite exciting debut. A very good listen.
At times felt like just another so so rock album but other tracks more enjoyable.
This was a fun, easy listen. I liked the railroad song the best but it was pretty consistent and had a somewhat unique sound.
Another band I've never heard of, but this time I actually liked the album. A good blend of classic rock sounds and Brit-pop. Surprised they never made it across the ocean.
Never heard of this band but Sounds more like the white stripes than yesterday’s lol. But I also heard some U2 and other power pop stuff in here. Fun if inconsequential album.
This was a delight!
Entertaining
A great surprise
A nice surprise with a late 60's sound from thr 2000's. 4 stars or B+.
This list is enamored with 2000s garage rock albums from bands I've never heard of, but as far as they come, this one's pretty good fun, almost like a White Stripes-Lite sometimes
Now, I actually really like this. It’s the kind of music that fits my default taste. When I listen to an album I try to do a little online research about the artist and the album. Why is this album in the list? The Zutons are not a groundbreaking act, and this album isn’t doing anything really progressive. Idk I like it, just a little confused as to why it’s here.
Who killed to Zutons is the semi-self titled debut album from the Liverpool band, the Zutons. Thry make an interesting version of pop/alt rock, with a basis in blues rock. Their sound is irreverent and quirky, and difficult to classify. They include a range of styles and influences, and sound like the varied mix that makes up music from Liverpool. The album was well received critically - it was nominated for a Mercury prize - but found limited commercial success outside of the UK.
Front half of the album is almost perfect, second half drops the ball a little. So good.
Forgot how much I love this album
My memory of The Zutons is of a decent indie band, possibly best known for Valerie which was made a huge hit by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. Their debut was good though, this is a collection of very catchy and retro sounding tunes. I thought it was very 60s sounding with a strong Beatles/Kinks type of vibe, and some nice brass bits too which differentiates from the standard indie landfill
i did enjoy listening to this one there is hand clapping dont focus on that to much i like the rest
you have to have a sense of whimsy to enjoy this album. it’s fun, exploratory, and goofy. if you hate on it you might hate life. lighten up.
That was a fun one!
Right off the bat, I have to readily admit that I cannot objectively rate anything by the Zutons. "Pressure Point" was one of the songs on the original PSP demo disc, which I devoured back in 2005 as a burgeoning middle schooler eager to discover new music on my own (it was also my introduction to Coheed!). So that song alone instantly makes me feel painfully nostalgic for simpler times (a bit ironic given the lyrics). All that aside - Dave McCabe's vocal range especially suits their style, and the vocal harmonies really add to the overall depth of the songs as a whole. The genre blend of folk, punk, indie/pop, garage rock really helps the whole album feel fresh and engaging from front to back, but you could argue it dips a bit around the middle. Abi Harding's saxophone is a subtle inclusion, it doesn't fight for the spotlight, but IMO it's the glue that really binds their sound together.
Really fun album
Huh! A gem of a discovery for me! Wow. Can't even define a genre clearly but it doesn't matter, this is actually really great. Also the band is good looking, what is up with that? Anyhow, lyrics, instrumentals, overall quality and complexity... spot on to be opinionated but probably fair. Yeah, this is a band I never heard, at least any of the songs on this album. Never heard of them at all, but I loved this! Great 1001 recommend!
poppy happy weird rock
Very surprised this is on the list but still a great big of nostalgia. Dirty Dance Hall is a favourite.
This reminded me of a Dirty Dancehall.
Look, it's fun. I don't care.
When I first listened to this album in 2021, I had no idea who the Zutons were. I thought "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" was a weird album. Even then, I thought the album art was cool. Nowadays, my opinion on "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" has been more favourable. "Railroad" is a great song for some reason. 4 stars for "Who Killed...... The Zutons?".
Skön och lite annorlunda!
Fun early 2000s indie vibes. Can hear their influence on a lot of bands I like, but not blowing me out of the water fully.
Tout à fait mon style, je réécouterais !
That was a perfectly fine album, but I have no idea why it's made this list.
Behagelig og variert. Kjempe søndagskive:)
Et veldig hyggelig bekjentskap. Kommer til å høre mer på dem.
No idea who this. Opening line sounded like surf. Now it sounds like an alternative Americana. “Pressure point is an amazing song”. I’m not even sure how to categorize this, but man I like it. Ok. I love this album. It reminds me of a local Pittsburgh band called Bear Cub. Just good songs. And I can’t nail it to a genre.
The only thing I know about the Zutons is "Valerie" (which isn't on this album). And Amy Winehouse did that better. What is on this album are 5 singles I've never heard of. So I'm not expecting much. So how wrong am I? Very. There's nothing utterly killer on here. But it's all very listenable and catchy. 3½
Good fun; the sax adds a lot of energy
Actually pretty solid
Don't know that is a must-hear album, but I enjoyed it compared to some of recent stuff I've been getting
A little bit surfer rock, a little bit Jack White, a little bit Harry Nilssen, a little bit B-52s, a little bit Fratellis. Not bad!
I really enjoyed this album
I like a band that isn’t afraid to rhyme home with home or sing about killing your friend’s girlfriend because he isn’t spending time with you anymore.
This album is incredible and very underrated. It's incredible hearing so many different sounds on a rock album, and something new happens in each song which only makes the whole album even better.
I actually thought this as great. Cool band.
bien as fuck
😼😼
Fun album
Do not judge an album by it's cover. I expected reverb or noise chaos but that's not what delivered. I really enjoyed this album and added two songs to a playlist of mine full of Indie essentials. I'm not sure I would call this indie overall but a few songs definitely were. Definitely a genre trip but I loved every moment.
I really enjoyed this vibe
The Zutons are the new Kinks. Discuss. Good album. I bet they're great live too.
I went in with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised
Very fun. 70s style imo
I am gladly surprised by the trip on the different styles in this album is exploring, takes me from dancing to the country-style peace of the soul.
- good fun record. -
7/10 Favorite: You Will You Won’t
This was a vibe we enjoyed it especially the first couple of tracks. Just good quality early 2000s indie pop/rock
Pretty amazing. Much better than most albums people on RYM suck off.4.5
- Can’t judge a book by its cover but can I judge an album by its cover? Gorge. Something about the album felt very familiar but I couldn’t place it. Some points of the album I was so obsessed but then others I was not so much which is why I’ll give it a 4 instead of 5. But the times I was really enjoying the album would get a 5 star. - Standouts: Confusion, Railroad
Who are the Zutons?
This was great, very much a feel good album, I don't think it was a fantastic listening experience since I was trying to lock in on some work and my brain kept tuning out the songs, but I'm just gonna take that to mean there wasn't as much consistency as there probably should have been (and there wasn't, some of the songs that I was clearly hearing fell flat). Still, quite good!
The instrumentation was really entertaining/unique and captured my attention! I really enjoyed this album and had never heard of the band before.
4/5
Me? I’m the damn fool who shot ‘em!
zuton fever is so funky and silly i like it i like pressure point tooo woah you will you will very peak song i likey i added most songs this album is abit of me 7/13
Never heard of them, but really enjoyed the listen.
Good fun and much better than I thought it was going to be.
I was aware of the Zutons but never listened to a whole album before, and this is great! I was surprised by the richbinstrumentals and I can tell this influenced a lot of indie bands in the 00s, I really like that they try different genres and sound menwhile keeping the supernatural theme of the album. It is really refreshing to come across a good, enjoyable and fun album like this, the 00s offered so many of these albums.. good times. I think it does belong to the list, and it is a 4/5
Never heard of these guys but was pleasantly surprised
Funky n groovy I liked it
This was a good way to end off 2025. I quite enjoyed The Zutons. I thought I only knew them for their Amy Winehouse hit but I realized I also knew You Will You Won’t, which has since made it onto my list of faves. Altogether some top British rock.
Good.
I have had a really great run of albums lately. I had heard of the Zutons but never heard a single note of their music. This isn't music that will change the world but with the horns and less serious aspect of the lyrics it does differentiate itself from bands in 2004 who were part of the post-punk revival. The album cover probably should annoy me but it does not. Interesting album and I'm enjoying this hot streak of music. My favorite songs were: Zuton Fever Pressure Point You Will You Won't Confusion Long Time Coming Remember Me Don't Ever Think (Too Much)
Pretty decent, although not great
zuton fever iwie gaaanz komisch aber es gfalltmer na hahah d drums fühled sich nöd immer glich tight ah aber iwie no cool es ischso nervös aber geeiil confusion isch chli chilliger I like hmm es het denn schochli abgno aber ich han au nümme so zueglost glaub es knapps 4i?
Versatile and interesting. One to go back too. Iiked it
Surprisingly Good. Shoutout to the song from MVP 05
Banger
I'd never heard of this band before, but they felt very familiar.
This list has me so jaded against British indie groups from the early 2000’s and the title is so stupid I was prepared to hate this. But it was pretty fun! I’m not mad.
Love this!!!!!
So often in this challenge, I find myself thinking "Was the editor scraping the bottle of the barrel here looking for more entries?" It feels especially true of post 2000 albums. And I want to be critical and rate it low. But more often than not, the album wins me over in the end. It's certainly the case here. The Zutons mix indie with blues rock and punk, among other genres. They're sort of dime a dozen but I actually really enjoyed this and the wide variety of sounds. I'm not sure it deserves a spot on the list but I'd happily listen again.
I loved this album when it came out and turns out I still do. I always felt they were the happier version of The Coral and love how they weaponized the saxophone.
Fun and inventive!
New band for me....not bad
sort of franz ferdinand without the radio play, inject a little bit of instrumental kookiness. i think the only thing its missing is a chart topper or two with big pop appeal, but otherwise it's some really dope indie/alt rock vibes, that dips into a little folk sometimes. very consistent as an album. Zuton Fever is sick as hell as an opener, i also quite like Railroad and Remember Me
Great sound, fun listening, style variety, havana gang brawl gets the people going, it's only left me trying to figure out who tf killed..... the zutons? 7/10
Great energy, catchy hooks, and fun lyrics.
Interesting mix of styles.
Really enjoyed this!
What a fun album, not what I expected, but I enjoyed this. 3.5/5 stars
QoA Adonis New.
Who Killed...... The Zutons? was an incredibly fun album. As i was listening to it, i was kinda teetering back and forth between giving this album 3 stars or 4 stars as there were both good and mediocre songs here. But as i kept listening, I began finding that the good was heavily outweighing the mediocre. I really liked the folk and blues elements combined with the garage rock sound that this album was mainly going for. The songs in general here just have this really fun vibe that i just can't help but really enjoy. I can't really think of anything to complain about other than said mediocre songs so i'll say its a very enjoyable album. Best Song: Havana Gang Brawl Worst Song: Long Time Coming Side Note: I love the music videos here too, they all provided something different but were all very fun to watch no matter what.
Decent variety. It's quite fun
A solid album from a band I've never heard of before. Will definitely be listening to again.
A delicious blend of old school dad-rock with the groovy, upbeat sounds of noughties indie rock bands. Really interesting melodies and harmonies throughout.
Wait why do I like this so much It’s also very fifa core So much versatility; such good riffs (and basslines of course) Man they got some wild blues stuff but also some sad sad songs (shout out to everyone I’ve led on) Holy shit I need to call in sick because I got Zuton Fever A fucking saxophone in an indie band is wild I don’t think they do anything revolutionary but every song on the album is executed really well Standouts: Zuton Fever, Pressure Point, Confusion, Not a lot to do, Dirty Dancehall, Moons and Horror Shows
I really enjoyed this! It's got a great energy. I haven't really listened to the Zutons before today, the one exception being "Valerie" (of which I hold the wildly unpopular opinion that the Zuton's original version is better than either of Amy Winehouse's covers, despite how insanely good they are. This is not a diss against Amy, those covers are phenomenal). I'd happily listen to this album any day of the week - in fact I probably will.
very fun and catchy
surprisingly good given ive never heard of them
I really enjoyed this album and enjoyed finding out this bad wrote the song, “Valerie”
Really spoke to the inner millennial in me, fun 2000s jammers. Saved!
You sometimes hear me ask "Why is this on the list?", and this is definitely one of those albums that make me think that. If this band weren't English, they wouldn't have sniffed the list. But just because it probably shouldn't be on the list doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile listen. Found myself enjoying this quite a bit. Genre wise, its a little all over the place, but it's cohesive none the less. Blend of garage rock, folk, ska, 2-tone, some classic rock influences like Led Zeppelin and Grateful Dead. I liked songs like Zuton Fever, Havana Gang Brawl, Nightmare Pt. II, and Dirty Dance hall. Basically whenever they are at their most Scooby-Doo, haha. So yeah. Good record, maybe shouldn't be on the list, but fun to get an album like this from time to time because you might find something fun.
I have not heard of this album, or the band, but it is very familiar. The songs all sound like music I have enjoyed by other artists, and that is not a band thing. Somewhat garage rock, somewhat "dad rock". Not a bad thing!
This was a great ride! I remember the band from back in the day but hadn't thought about them in a while. Listened to this one 2x! Fun record!
love a cheeky little brass/woodwind player in a rock band
Excelent discovery. Not perfect, but very refreshing.
This band had come up for me randomly and they occupied and interesting corner of music during this time. I’m into it.
Yah I grew up with early 2000s rock music like Jet, The Offspring, The White Stripes, etc. so this album was very welcoming. It just has that early 2000s rock production sound to it. Very nostalgic, which is kinda weird cause I’ve never heard of them before. But there was a lot to dig into on this album. They even included my FAVORITE thing which is a good variety of sounds. I always get alittle turned off when an album tries to sound alittle too homogeneous. That being said there were skips on this album, and they are kinda random throughout, but what’s important is that it held my attention and I didn’t get bored and start thinking about other things. I’ll definitely have to give their other albums a listen.
I liked this. Definitely "of it's time". But overall this was a really strong early 2000's rock album.
Interessanter eingängiger sound
I liked this quite a bit. Interesting stuff.
This is very good. The crafty hooks and throwback sound reminds me a little of the Stray Cats. Energetic and enjoyable. Definitely worth another listen. A 4.
I was surprised that this was made 20ish years ago! Everything sounded older (in a good way), like it was made in the '60s. Kinda cool that it had that aesthetic. I would rate this a 3.5, but I'm okay with a 4.
a lot of fun. very enjoyable!
I enjoyed this one- I found myself rocking out while I worked. A few songs stuck out to me and I could see listening to it again and it growing on me.
No stand out tracks but no duds either. The mid 00s British lad rock scene was crying out for a jaunty scouse band to complement the more cynical Manchester/Sheffield bands. Why the wanky British public chose faux-scouse Brighton boys The Kooks over this mob will always be a mystery to me
This is better than I thought it would be. I don’t think The Zutons will ever cross my mind again but if I saw or heard the name again, I’d be reminded of a time I heard an album and enjoyed the musical fingering my ears were given. Not too hard and not too soft. I’d put these guys in the same category as The Odds, 5440, Dire Straits Every sound and note is perfected. It’s just a middle of the road, can’t fail album. Like no one should be angry at having to listen to this . Choice cut: Confusion
Cool name!! Cool music!!
Didn't start off? well, but started pulling it back, and came on strong in last third. Can honestly say I enjoyed it, didn't expect to, but I did. So I'm going to have to give it a 4.
It was more fun than the usual UK rock band. I was suprised that this wasnt the album with Valerie in it.
Although 2000s UK indie is very much my wheelhouse, I was never that into the Zutons, maybe it was the way Valerie was overplayed on the airwaves. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed this album
First album I ever bought Looking forward to this
2004 alt rock is something that should be right up m hitting zone but I missed the Zutons at the time. I enjoy the opener "Zuton Fever" Actually enjoying quite a few songs of this album. A hidden gem for sure! Remember Me is another highlight. Dirty Dancehall too.
I always hold my breath a little when we get an album from this era. Not to be ageist, but I feel like there was a definite drop off in talent around the turn of the millennium. That said, “Pressure Point,“ is a really fun track. And the rest of the album was surprisingly good to boot!
Really surprising. Another retro 60s vibe band from the ‘00s, but this one brings a higher level of sophistication. At the end of the second listen I was craving more.
Fun!
This album rocked with some solid tunes. Very pleasantly surprised
I guess I like dad rock?
