Reviews (page 3 of 7)
This was quite fun for an artist I had only vaguely heard of. Poppy tunes, nice playing, a variety of song styles. Kudos, lads!
I like this band it was good kinda reminds of Black Keys or Cold War Kids
A fun album. I'm usually don't like these early 2000s indie bands, but The Zutons are a fun listen. A lot of times they sound like they're straight out of a Tarantino film and they call back to older sounds with a modern twist. I won't probably be going back to this, but it was a fun experience, nontheless. 4/5
8/10
Really enjoyed this. Never have heard of. I'm going to listen again and again.
Det her kan umulig være blant det mest interessante som skjedde av musikk på begynnelsen av 2000-tallet. Det va ikke så verst, men det va jammen ikke overveldanes bra heller. Gøy men forglemmelig.
A good time, saxophone was a fun touch.
This was good =} Worth another listen
I still love this album. Had been a fan ever since it first came out. One of the fun-est bands of that early-mid 2000s indie boom. They look like Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem. I love the Sly & The Family Stone-iness of some of the songs and I can even tolerate the occasional country leanings. The lyrics are good, too. However, I'm surprised this (and Franz Ferdinand) is till in the list when so many 2000s albums were dropped after a few years passed.
Interesting choice as I remember hearing Zuton Fever, which was not a single, and thinking this was like a less frenzied cramps either it’s swampy blues riff and tremendous vocals. It was this intro that lead to the discovery of the rich musically diverse record. Pressure Drop and Long Time Comin are unmistakably catchy standouts in a record full of them. The Ian Broudie (Lighting Seeds) production is crisp and textured with the vocals up in the mix making this one of those debut records timeless. At the time the comparisons to the Coral who were on the same label overshadowed the genius of the genre experiments on this record. Hints of the 80’s - the Specials and English Beat come to mind, with throwback’s to do wop and the Beatles (The Liverpool influence is there but not cloying) Check out Not A Lot To Do and Remember Me where this is truly evident. For so many different musical style experiments this album is remarkable for its cohesive.
A pleasant surprise
7/10 pretty vibey
A good transition album from early to mid 2000's rock
fun
Dirty Dancehall is a 10/10 song. Fun album
great. similar to paul mccartney in the 80s and early 2000s rock - would listen again
Who Killed the Zutons is energetic indie rock. The album starts of strong with hints of exotic, even soulful rock. The last 3rd drops off a bit but still a great album 8.3/10
I love this era of rock revival but this was just ok
It's rare that music stands out to me in the particular way that this album did. Funky pop/rock with fun lyrics and good style. A solid hidden gem.
Here for this! Nice mix of funky songs & energy.
Interesting i think this was probably a huge precursor to British indie pop stuff like the blossoms and stuff. It’s quite alike some classic rock stuff and also quite jazzy and funky in some places, which is interesting, and very good. Songs are also quite catchy, sometimes quite like the flaming lips, but just much more guitar heavy. Favourite songs: all but railroad, remember me and the last 2. Overall around 7/10
"Who Killed Captain Alex?" of music.
Quirky, but in a really cool way.
i had fun but wished amy winehouse were singing all these songs instead
This album gave me whiplash
never heard about this band, but I liked it at the very first second
I'm shocked how much I got into this, fun, silly, yeah pretty great stuff
This was surprising and fun. I really liked most of the songs presented for being a little quirky and out of the norm. The style reminded me of something much older than 2004, which really appeals to me; there's like a 70s or 80s influence over the whole album that I couldn't get enough of. Favorite songs: Zuton Fever Pressure Point Long Time Coming Dirty Dancehall Don't Ever Think (Too Much)
really liked this one!
I would throw this on again
I'll accept the list is bloated with British bands. But this is one of my favourites. They have a sax player and it doesn't feel like a gimmick, and the vocals are good.
Listened Before? N What an awesome indie record! Totally unexpected and this is why I do this list. To find hidden gems. The only minus is that the band name, and thus the album name, are terrible. But hey, I can get over that. I'll definitely listen to this again. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Remember Me
Would listen again - the vibe of music that I like
Pretty fun! Started off strong
I enjoyed this I only really knew the song Valerie by the Zutons, I’m surprised they didn’t have other hits this album had some good songs on it, it surprised me
Never heard of them or any of the songs but I liked it a lot more than I expected to💃💃💃
Had heard of this album before (and indeed a few songs on it). Was sceptical going in, but a fine example of 2000s indie/alternative from the UK. Saved half the songs. For what it is, I can't complain!
Wow, I loved this! Right up my alley. Super solid indie rock album with... is that Blues influence? Towards the end of the album, I notice a more southern sound which is kinda neat. Fave song: Pressure Point Honorable Mentions: Zuton Fever, You Will You Won't, Havana Gang Brawl, and Long Time Coming
I loved the first 3 songs SO MUCH, creative use of the trumpet and percussion (cowbell, maraccas etc.) As for the rest of the album, im not sure about the more "folkish" music and it was a bit basic but still solid. Favourite Song: Zuton Fever Honourable Mention: Pressure Point

The Zutons – Who Killed…… The Zutons? (2004) Score: 8/10 Favorite Track: “Nightmare Part II” This was another one I went into blind, and it ended up being a really pleasant surprise. It is a soft pop rock album that stays consistent the whole way through. No track completely blew me away, but nothing missed either. That steady quality across the board made it easy to enjoy from start to finish, and “Nightmare Part II” stood out as the one that stuck with me the most. The one thing that bugged me was the title. With a name like Who Killed…… The Zutons?, I expected more of a concept or mystery vibe to tie it together. They could have named it almost anything else and it would have made more sense. Still, that is a small gripe for an album that was way better than I expected. I can definitely see myself coming back to it.
Despite not knowing this band, I'm now a full-fledged Zutonite.
Alright, light 4. I’ve had “Pressure Point” stuck in my head after I heard it once on Fuse in 2004 and have basically never listened to the song again until today. And it turns out the rest of the album is pretty solid too! I enjoyed myself thoroughly; it’s not the best thing in the world but I listened to this like three times yesterday.
Revivals don't always showcase creativity, especially revivals of revivals, since that's what The Zutons are: a horn-heavy revival of The La's who were reviving The Beatles, etc. It's not just the Liverpool connection, tho that's apparent. It's the pop outlook, the refusal to be conceptual tho not opposed to storytelling, a deepness that's not deep but merely for fun. In other words, The Zutons manage a creative revival, I'm happy to say. Dave McCabe's vocals are slightly tinged w/ pseudo-soul, but he's a pleasurable reminder of Alex Chilton w/ The Boxtops, the instrumentation variegates, the songwriting even echoes Lead Belly. 'Oh where will you sleep tonight.' It's not the greatest thing ever, but I'll take them over the Arctic Monkeys.
Really cool vibes and album! Always enjoy artists playing around like this. Reminded me of Illinois a bit too.
What a weird album! In a very positive way. Lots of great earworms, fantastic energy, and an interesting sound that almost reminds me of RHCP. Super ambitious too.
An unexpected treat! Most of the albums in the "random indie band" genre that we've gotten so far haven't enticed too too much, but this one is just eclectic enough to really catch my ear, with tight songwriting across its whole length sealing the deal. A delightful surprise, 9/10.
This album had a lot of interesting things going on and was an overall enjoyable listen. 3.5 rounded up to 4
Very surprised at this, it was really enjoyable. Maybe it's the addition of the sax, or the lyrics being pretty quirky, I dunno. But by the first 2 tracks, I was hooked. It just sounded... fun. Will definitely listen to this again. Top tracks: "Zuton Fever," "Pressure Point," "Havana Gang Brawl," "Railroad"
Toss up here between a 3 and a 4. The album started off really strong with Zuton Fever, Pressure Point, and You Will You Won't; had me bopping along, especially that last one. They've got a Franz Ferdinand / Fratellis / Interpol-like Britrock feel of the 2000's. It's jazzier with regular use of sax, but a similar funky and bass-heavy tempo. Confusion and Railroad sounded more like early Blur (or later Weezer) while Havana Gang Brawl and Long Time Coming reminded me more of the Arctic Monkeys, but all were still solid. And then the second half of the album started to drag and feel repetitive. Dirty Dancehall got back to that cool funk from the start of the album and Don't Ever Think (Too Much) had some solid energy too. But I wanted more out of the rest. 3.5 plus a coin flip, rounding up.
When I saw this was a Liverpudlian band from 2004 that's been removed from the 1001, I immediately figured it was going to be another boring Britpop band - instead I was pleasantly surprised: this was a fun album! I can't say any of it is super-original, but I found myself smiling and bopping along throughout. Would definitely revisit. Favorite tracks: Zuton Fever (I like the 60s horror campy style), Pressure Point (very-Black Keys-ish, who were contemporaries), You Will You Won't (very cool track), Long Time Coming, Dirty Dancehall.
Started out thinking it reminds me of Ok Go, ended thinking it reminds me of Cage The Elephant. Fun album.
Oh this is so funky, this Is something I can defo get into
This was a fun album that I haven’t heard in years. Not bad.
I'd give this 4.5 if I could. Half the album is brilliant. The other half is fine but ruined by the heights of the first half.
Great mix of songs. Very impressed.
I already knew the album inside out, word for word. The tunes are catchy, the mood generally uplifting but with a couple of slower tracks along the way. Enjoyed the harmonies and a little slice of retro Top track: You will You won't
Catchy
Good fun retro rock. Not sure I’ll go back to it often but damn I enjoyed it
I have no idea why this album is on the list. I've never heard of The Zutons, and I still don't know what a Zuton even is or who killed them... but I think I love them. Like, genuinely, this is a 4.9/5 of an album, and the ONLY reason it isn't a 5 is because I didn't always love every song. But, the ones I did like, I absolutely L O V E D, and it's more than a few. "Zuton Fever" "Pressure Point" "You Will You Won't", "Havana Gang Brawl", "Dirty Dancehall" and "Don't Ever Think (Too Much)" are all phenomenal songs. The singer's voice is oddly reminiscent of someone else and I just can't for the life of me place who it is, but clearly I like them as well. I haven't been doing this a lot, but I'm actively going to seek out more of this band's music and hope it's comparable to this album, because this might have surprised me more than anything else I've listened to so far up to this point. This is a strong contender for moving up to 5 stars if I do a rebalancing of my list. Great job Zutons, you've gained a fan.
Another band I haven't heard before. They are quite good, remind me of the White Stripes with a bit of rockabilly mixed in. I enjoyed the listen.
Really enjoyed this. Lightly ska/folk-inflected indie rock with enough variety to keep it interesting throughout.
8/10
Ondanks de lyrics vond ik dit een erg leuk album voor een gezellige zonnige dag. Ik heb echt de helft van dit album aan mn playlist toegevoegd
interesting and fun album.
Good varied sound that has all sorts of elements that don’t come out without multiple listenings. Nothing generic about this one.
IDK, wasn't me. Low 4, it's fun, it's experimentative, but it should be way more. There's some filler.
4.3 - Man I did not know I knew this album so much. It's aged really well imo. Great album
These are the albums that I love most in this project. Bands that I have never heard before, and that are a little outside of the mainstream. I greatly enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed these songs, and I think that they came out really strong. I definitely like the higher energy ones more, and thought they slowed down a bit in the middle and towards the end. Still, a great album that I'm glad I found through this.
This is bouncy and solid overall,, with the diverse (but not too) sounds grows on one across the record. Best cuts: "Remember Me" and "Don't Think Too Much." One gets vibes neo-Kinks vibes and the Las too. Worth knowing. Wonder why one hasn't heard more of them.
Never had heard of this before, but I really enjoyed this album. Great folk punk vibes!
Had a fun time listening to this one, style was right up my alley. I seem to remember hearing of the title of this album although no tracks sounded familiar. 4/5 I’ll be checking into more of their discography
Interesting album.
83% Best: Zuton Fever; Pressure Point; You Will You Won't; Dirty Dancehall Must-Hear? Sure
Ok, I unexpectedly really liked this album Closer to 5 than 4
This was fun and pretty enjoyable.
I had missed these guys, but this album is definitely up there with other early 2000's sleaze rock. They deserve to be in the conversation with bands like The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Couple of great iconic songs from the 2000’s! Other than that, nothing special for me
This actually feels fresh to me, I liked it
Need to listen to them more
Fun album, hints at several other styles of music I enjoy. Giving it a 4 for future reference.
This one was really fun. A little dated but in a way that holds up better than other albums of similar style at the time.
A slice of great songwriting. In a similar vein to The Coral - not in that they are both Liverpool - but twisting what can be done with a guitar band. Great harmonies, the sax, and storytelling lyrics
Honestly really good
I really liked this one and from a band I have never heard of. I got a lot of Black Keys vibes (who I also like). Zuton Fever had me questioning if it was a Black Keys song, but it wasn't but still good. I also like You Will You Won't, Confusion, and Nightmare Part II. Railroad was a different vibe but still fun. It had older rock vibes with enough newer alt rock indie fun to make it enjoyable and fresher. There were also a lot of extra instruments worked in to make the sound rock but with a little difference.
I love me some catchy, upbeat sax rock. It's cool that they have a few slower songs on here to mix things up but I like the more upbeat songs better. That Railroad Song is a skip. I don't believe he ever worked a day on the railroad in his life. I can't not hear Havana Gang Brawl as URBANA Gang Brawl.
This was pleasant to my ears and rather catchy, and I appreciate the variety in songs and the different reflections on life they address in their lyrics. I was feeling like it lacked a little "heart" after the first listen, but I gave it a second spin through, and it really grew on me. Favorite tune was Dirty Dancehall. Runner-up goes to Moons and Horror Shows. And that sax in Confusion, swoon. Surprisingly lovely new discovery!
## In-Depth Review of *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* by The Zutons Released on April 19, 2004, *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* is the debut album of Liverpool-based indie rock band The Zutons. Produced by Ian Broudie, the album blends a variety of musical influences, showcasing the band’s unique sound. Below is a detailed analysis of the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, along with its strengths and weaknesses. --- ### **Lyrics** The lyrics on *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* are a mix of playful storytelling and introspective musings. Dave McCabe’s songwriting often leans toward quirky narratives and vivid imagery. Tracks like "Havana Gang Brawl" paint cinematic pictures of turf wars, while "Dirty Dancehall" delves into the chaos and allure of nightlife. On the more introspective side, songs like "Confusion" explore themes of uncertainty and emotional turmoil. McCabe’s lyrical style is conversational yet poetic, often blending humor with melancholy. For example, "Not a Lot to Do" captures the ennui of small-town life with sharp wit. However, some critics argue that the lyrics occasionally lack depth. While the narratives are engaging, they sometimes feel superficial or overly reliant on quirky charm rather than profound insight[3]. --- ### **Music** The music is where *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* truly shines. The album is a melting pot of genres, drawing from funk, soul, rock, and even ska. Tracks like "Pressure Point" feature punchy rhythms and infectious hooks, while "Zuton Fever" incorporates surf-rock-inspired guitar riffs reminiscent of Dick Dale[3]. Abi Harding’s saxophone work adds a distinctive layer to the band’s sound. Her contributions elevate tracks like "Remember Me," giving them a jazzy flair that sets The Zutons apart from their contemporaries. The interplay between saxophone and guitar creates a dynamic texture throughout the album. Despite its eclecticism, some critics feel that the album occasionally struggles to balance its influences cohesively. Certain tracks can feel derivative, borrowing heavily from bands like Talking Heads and Sly & the Family Stone without fully transcending those inspirations[3]. --- ### **Production** The album was produced by Ian Broudie (known for his work with The Lightning Seeds) and recorded at RAK Studios in London and Parr Street Studios in Liverpool[1][4]. Broudie’s production emphasizes clarity and energy, allowing each instrument to shine without overwhelming the mix. Tracks like "You Will You Won’t" showcase Broudie’s knack for creating crisp, radio-friendly arrangements. Meanwhile, songs such as "Confusion" benefit from more atmospheric production choices that enhance their emotional weight. However, some critics argue that the production occasionally feels too polished for an album rooted in raw energy and eclecticism. This slickness can dilute some of the band’s more chaotic or experimental tendencies[3]. --- ### **Themes** Thematically, *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* explores a range of topics: - **Urban Life**: Songs like "Dirty Dancehall" and "Havana Gang Brawl" delve into the grit and glamour of city living. - **Isolation**: Tracks such as "Not a Lot to Do" reflect on feelings of boredom and disconnection. - **Nostalgia**: Several songs evoke a sense of longing for simpler times or lost innocence. While these themes are compelling, they are often presented through a lens of whimsy rather than deep introspection. This approach makes the album accessible but may leave listeners craving more emotional depth. --- ### **Influence** As part of Liverpool's vibrant indie scene in the early 2000s, The Zutons were often compared to their labelmates The Coral. However, their use of saxophone and genre-blending set them apart. *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* received critical acclaim upon release and was nominated for the Mercury Prize[1][4]. It also achieved commercial success, peaking at number six on the UK Albums Chart and earning double platinum certification by 2013[1][4]. The album’s influence is evident in its inclusion in *1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die*. It helped pave the way for other indie bands to experiment with unconventional instrumentation and genre fusion. --- ### **Pros** 1. **Eclectic Sound**: The album’s blend of funk, soul, rock, and ska creates a unique listening experience. 2. **Strong Musicianship**: Abi Harding’s saxophone work is a standout feature that adds depth to the arrangements. 3. **Catchy Hooks**: Tracks like "Pressure Point" are irresistibly infectious. 4. **Playful Lyrics**: McCabe’s storytelling brings humor and personality to the songs. 5. **Energetic Production**: Ian Broudie ensures that every instrument shines. --- ### **Cons** 1. **Lack of Cohesion**: The genre-blending can sometimes feel disjointed. 2. **Derivative Moments**: Certain tracks borrow heavily from influences without fully innovating. 3. **Superficial Lyrics**: While entertaining, some songs lack emotional or thematic depth. 4. **Overly Polished Production**: The slickness occasionally undermines the raw energy of the band. --- ### **Conclusion** *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* is an ambitious debut that showcases The Zutons’ talent for crafting eclectic and energetic music. While it has its flaws—such as occasional derivative tendencies and superficial lyrics—it remains an engaging listen filled with memorable hooks and inventive arrangements. The album’s unique blend of genres and use of saxophone have left a lasting impact on indie rock. Despite its imperfections, *Who Killed...... The Zutons?* deserves its place as one of the standout albums of the early 2000s indie scene.
Idc I liked that
# Album Name: Who killed the Zutons? # Artist: The Zutons # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Probably doesnt deserve to be on the list imo. But its a very enjoyable album. # Top Tunes: Z fever / you will you wont / pressure point / confusion / nightmare 2 / remember me # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Quirky and with a sense of humour. I remember when this came out ...same sort of time as The Kooks.. a period where this music fit in really well. Not my favourite but enjoyed it!
хороший классический инди рок начала нулевых
This album is a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Still some songs that don't do much, but there's so well recorded, well played, catchy music here. I especially love when they pull the sax out. Surprisingly high 4 on this one
Only knew Pressure Point coming in, because, as previously mentioned in the group chat, it is featured on what many consider to be the greatest traditional sports video game soundtrack of all time, MVP Baseball 2005 (is that better for y'all extreme sports fanatics?). Was pleasantly surprised by the variation on this album, it felt like each song could have just as easily been placed in a different genre or decade and it would have done just fine. I'm honestly more surprised that this album is not more popular in mainstream culture. Will be coming back to it and I hope we have more Zutons albums in the future.
Really nice surprise this one. Didn't realise they were this bluesy
If only the world recognised the majority of their songs are even better than Valarie.
Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. Really, REALLY great stuff. 4.5/5
I'm diggin it. Think I've heard pressure point before somewhere... Maybe baby driver. Sounds like a baby driver song.
I really like this, it sounds...fresh and new while still sounding retro and cool. That's quite a feat. It's fun without being gimmicky.
This is one of the few pleasant surprises in the 400+ alvums I have listened to from thus list this far. I really expected psychedellic expirimental noise. But it's actually gritty, energetic guitar driven rock that you can't help but enjoy. Have now gone through most of their catalog. Nobody killed the Zutons. Their rocking and keeping it real!
Haven't listened to this in twenty years, and I think I like it more now than I did then. Singer's voice works well for me, I like the sax.
This was a fun listen. Different and catchy. Consider them added. Very funky and poppy, slow and upbeat.
this slays 4/5
Great post punk pop!.
Lot of difference in the music 3.5 stars
I favorited some songs. Vibe somewhere between Vampire Weekend and Deer Tick. Enjoyable.
Honestly - this was pretty awesome. I wasn't reeeeeally into the first track but Pressure point on was really great. Turns out I knew Pressure point already from MVP Baseball 05'. But definitely never a band I looked into when i was 13. Front to back really dope. The vinyl pressing for this is rare as hell apparently - $200 a pop
Another album that made the list solely because it's British, but this one is actually pretty good. I enjoyed the listen quite a bit. Pressure Point was the standout track for me.
I...really liked this. Have never heard of this band and was thinking I was just going to suffer though but listened to it three times in a row! Will be back for the Zutons!
I had no idea what this was going to be but actually really enjoyed it
Enjoyed this!
This was a delight. I had the cd when it was current and had forgotten about it entirely. A couple of spins shows that it has held up well. The song craft, coupled with the up beat nature makes this a really pleasing listen. The range of musical influences, layers and tempo really drag this along and i found it colourful and warm.
this was good, really liked nightmare pt 2. thought the album would tire quickly but just genuinely enjoyed throughout
A pleasant surprise from a band I never heard of. This was fun and I enjoyed it. 3.75/5
Very positive surprise. Never heard of the band before.
I really enjoyed this one and would happily listen to it again.
Never heard of this band. Enjoyed it! 4/5
This came out right before the Arctic Monkeys. I think they have roughly the same influences. Somehow the Arctic Monkeys were far more successful while the Zutons made far better music. Favorite song: Zuton fever.
01) Zuton Fever – 7,5 02) Pressure Point – 9,0 03) You Will You Won't – 8,5 04) Confusion – 9,0 05) Havana Gang Brawl – 8,5 06) Railroad – 8,0 07) Long Time Coming – 7,5 08) Nightmare Part II – 7,5 09) Not a Lot to Do – 7,0 10) Remember Me – 8,5 11) Dirty Dancehall – 7,0 12) Moons and Horror Shows – 7,5 13) Don't Ever Think (Too Much) – 8,5 TOTAL: 8,00 (80/100) Current ranking: 143/411
Had absolutely no idea what to expect with this, but I really liked it.
Garagey and fun!
I did not know this group or album. I definitely liked their quirky style, both musically and lyrically. I also thought there was enough variety that it kept my interest. The thing I most disliked was that some of the instrumentation was so overly simplistic that I thought I was listening to a mediocre high school band at times.
This is a fun album. I'm a sucker for anything apocalyptic. Definitely will be bumping this along with Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" during an apocalypse
I liked this more than I thought I would!
Super into this band!
I find this fits in kind of a Shins or a Strokes or Arctic Monkeys and maybe White Stripes kind of vibe but a little funkier. It was a fun listen but not too much lasting appeal unfortunately. Having never heard of them I was quite happy to hear this though. Long Time Coming is probably my favorite off this.
This album took a few songs for me to warm up to it. But overall it was a fun ride. The Zutons seem like the Old 97. In that they’re a super talented band that makes really enjoyable songs but is missing some element to achieve main stream success and appeal.
This is fine, in fact I may investigate if The Zutons made any other albums before they were killed.
Pretty good 👍
A lovely surprise, to be honest. I was expecting the same damn boring indie rock but I was surprised by a very versatile album sonically. The concept makes the album even more interesting and the lyrics are quite cohesive.
I liked this a lot. Unexpected and geeky.
Wish I'd listened to this at the time, oh well, 20 years on great fun!
Definitely a Forrest Gump box of chocolates of an album. If I was more enamoured of McCabe's vocals I might have given this five stars. There was some hard candy, some soft centres, and some of those ones that everyone leaves in the box until last. Worth a four, I think.
I have no idea why this is on the list. But I liked it.
Great tunes on this
I didn't really care for these folks at the time but listening now I'm not sure why - they're kinda half way between The Coral and The Bees and I like both of those bands. I dunno, maybe their marketing was irritating and put me off? I like their sound and I'm a fan of wailing sax being added to rock - I prefer their more upbeat stuff to the mellower songs. Fave tracks - "Zuton Fever" - wish the whole album had this energy or more so. "Dirty Dancehall" slaps too....
I hadn’t heard of this band before, but there is a quite a bit to like here. I hear tunes similar to the RHCP, Dispatch, QOTSA, the Strokes and more. They manage to find new and compelling grooves throughout.
a little psychedelic a little spooky and also a little funny
Reminds me of the Brazilian band Bidê ou Balde.
I’m probably rounding up about a half point here, because I really enjoyed this and just didn’t think it deserved to be lumped in with a bunch of meh 3 star albums. Cool, unique vibes here. Just surprised Valerie wasn’t on this, haha.
This was pretty good. Some nice variety
where was this group dug up from?
Killed by dad rock, but what a way to go.
This album is honestly a mess in many aspects with its fusions of contemporary Blues Rock, ala The White Stripes, country rock, and some classic hard rock. With that said, it does still sound pretty damn good in its best moments, and I quite enjoyed the lead vocalist's very personable style. The arpeggiated guitar driving the song 'Havana Gang Brawl' caught me off guard with just how nice it is on the ears - this entire song has a pretty killer groove. Given the album's image, there really is something super cartoony and action-movie-soundtrack'ish about the way the songs are constructed and the instruments played, but not really in a bad way - it's charming more times than not. 'Not A Lot To Do' was probably my favorite song from a lyrical standpoint, it follows a very lethargic and hollow character and is backed by a nice ensemble of somber strings. I had a lot of fun with this thing, especially as the album went on and in its final moments. I was kinda sad when it ended tbh. There's a lot of personality here - something that always manages to win me over.
surprisingly enjoyed this. A little weird but still
This is pretty good. I’ve never heard of this band.
i always get the ick from this genre in this era but it’s possible that i only feel that way about that genre/era because it reminds me of being 14. and because i didn’t know this album back then, it doesn’t carry the association so actually i suppose it’s nice to have an example of that music that i CAN listen to with fresh, mature ears and perhaps judge more fairly as a result. but i don’t think it objectively sounds that dated regardless. i had fun!!!!!!
It’s just a good album. Don’t need to say anything else, it’s just quality tunes from start to finish.
first listen i liked this one, wish there were more in this list from this era
i love it when i get an album i’ve never heard of and it turns out to be a fun listen!
Only knew them from Valerie, but this was a nice surprise
Blast from the past, and a welcome one!
Entre el segundo de los strokes y el primero de los arctics

It started off very promising, good vibes, nice, quite original melodies, enjoyable vocal, but throughout the album the quality was not that consistent. Few boring and mundane songs, and back to original and exotic tunes. Overall, the novelty probably weigh more than the downsides of the record, so a solid 4 it is.
I liked this album a lot. The beginning had a white stripes vocal sound to it. The beginning, middle, and end all sort of sounded like different bands but I could jam to all of them. End was more of a fast beat rock. I'll probably give a listen to some more Zutons.
Really surprisingly good album when I had no idea what was coming up with the genres being listed as Folk and Garage Rock at the same time. I feel like I knew the song Pressure Point but I am not completely confident. Zuton Fever was a really cool song to kick things off. Still trying to figure out what a Zuton is but we may never know. I found myself really jamming along to this album and could definitely see myself going back and re-listening at some point. Always great to have a surprise album come up in the 4s
Damn, I loved this album. I was almost at a 5, and this launched me into an exploration of more of their stuff — all of which was cool. Funny that I was recently discussing the fact that the song "Valerie," which most everyone knows as an Amy Winehouse cover, is commonly assumed to be an oldie that was resurrected in 2007. Alas, no, it's a 2006 release by The Zutons that for whatever reason, wasn't enough for me to explore their catalog earlier. I listened again, and it's just a good song — both versions have a lot to offer. So... this album... there wasn't a bad track on it. I'm going to cycle through all of their releases (there are only four) as I suspect something that came after this might only improve on the good stuff going on here.
Yeah, this was pretty dope. Catchy, quirky... they reminded me of The Silver Jews on occasion. I dug this.
Feels like taking 2000's indie and putting it into a blender. An indie smoothie. White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, and more are mixed up in here. Even some country mixed in there.
I think the album builds as it goes forward. The first few songs aren't much to write home about, but as we progress through things keep getting better. The back half of the album is really solid IMO. I loved the fact that they had a distinct sound, but quite a lot of variety in that sound from song to song. The lyrical content was intriguing. Just a bunch of little touches all through out that make me want to return to this album in the near future. I particularly liked "Remember Me" which turns a bunch of "old lover" tropes sideways to write a song about a friend who has a new partner and just isn't hanging out any more. I also really liked Dirty Dancehall which had a sorta Morphine adjacent sound. On my scale this is probably in between a 3 and 4. It's not quite impactful enough to be a 4, but I'm more likely to go back to it than I would a 3. So 4 stars, because it's too strong a 3 to be rated a 3.
I didn't really know what to expect when listening to this album. I recognise the band but never really listened to any of their songs before. My favourite songs were 'you will you won't' and 'don't ever think (too much)' And before anybody wants to moan and say one of those songs isn't on the original track listing, I'm counting 'don't ever think (too much)' on this list because it was on the British reissue and since it's a British band that's what counts.
This was a far better listen than I expected!
When I first saw this assignment, my immediate thought was that I felt like I’d heard of this band and remembered them coming out but couldn’t remember anything about them or any of their songs. Then Pressure Point came on and I immediately recognized it. That song was everywhere on the radio when it came out. And I don’t think I liked it at the time. Listening to it now was actually pretty cool. (Side note: I also had no idea they were behind Valerie.) I don’t think I was ready for the weird mix of alt rock, Western/Americana rock, soul/funk, and jazz (almost klezmer) that they were doing at the time. I wasn’t a big White Stripes fan at the time either, but I definitely hear similarities between those groups. I think this 1001 albums project has actually prepared me for this album, now having a better sense of music history and an appreciation for more genres. So, that’s cool, I guess. When this band came out I think I roped them in with the other garage rock garbage that was coming out at the time like Jet and The Hives. But these guys are talented musicians. Sure, the music is a pastiche of a lot of earlier styles, but it’s put together in a new and interesting way that doesn’t just sound like it’s trying to mimic something that came earlier. It kind of reminds me of some of the Brit pop albums on this list (Super Furry Animals, The Beta Band) except less obnoxious and with lyrics that actually make sense. And I actually really enjoyed the yakety sax elements — it kept it interesting. 4/5
Maybe it’s not one of the greatest albums ever, maybe it isn’t that peak of creativity but for me it is a great album with a consistent set of songs and I’d be happy to listen to it a lot.
Pretty good! I'm surprised I didn't already know this band or this album as this type of thing was exactly my scene in 2004. Some songs were more interesting than others. I think if I listened to this more, it would really grow on me.
This was new to me. Really enjoyed it.
sounds older than it is, great band
Zuton Fever // Pressure Point // You Will You Won’t // Confusion // Not A Lot To Do // Moons And Horror Shows //
4 he has a good voice
I freaking love 2000's rock. They generally sound overly refined and yet they sound crazier than say 1990's rock. What an awesome surprise.
Kinda liked this!
This album was a lot of fun and so far is my favorite album by a band I’d never heard previously. 4.3 stars
“Pressure Point” is still my favorite song after first hearing it on a PSP music video UMD almost 20 years ago, but there was a lot to like beyond that.
Who killed The Zutons? Interesting question. What I can say is that it wasn't my increased attention to this album while it played. I had expected some bog standard, dull dishwater landfill indie upon receiving this release but what I was met with instead was some rather surprisingly good tunes, most of which don't approach past the three minute mark (which is much appreciated) and don't overstay their welcome. It is apparent that The Zutons were a very talented bunch and they destined to improve their stride before they were murdered. Such a shame. Favorites: Zuton Fever, Pressure Point, You Will You Won't, Havana Gang Brawl, Railroad, Long Time Coming, Not a Lot to Do, Remember Me, Dirty Dancehall.
This album was pretty great. Never heard of the Zutons before, but they're someone I'll probably look for more of after this.
This is a cool album!
Wow not bad
funky cool stuff woohooo interesting
Never heard of this group, never heard any of the songs, but will listen again & check out more of their stuff. Looks like they have a new release too, The big Decider (2024)
Just a quirky, genre-bending fever dream of an album. Ska? Surf rock? Zombie singalongs? Sure, why not.
Only knew them for Valrie, but wasn't aware they had this in them

I thought the album cover and names might mean this would be an exciting and creative piece. I was prepared to be let down. I thought this was a really executed album. Its unique and a whole lot of fun. Tons of stuff going on. Reminds me of theme songs but executed really well.
Pretty catchy stuff
I'd give this 4.5, catchy beats, he's got a good scream
Never heard of this band but loved them. Great retro, rockabilly sound with some ska influence. Clean vocals and lyrics. Totally fun all the way through.
Well here’s something that feels like it might have aged poorly… and yet it’s pretty damn good! Songs stand up really well, Remember Me and You Will You Won’t especially Plus it’s reminded me what a crush young me had on the saxophonist A very pleasant trip down memory lane
Really enjoyed the riffs and singing on this. Zuton Fever started the album right and kept going. Nice track variety. 4/5!
Thought it was going to suck based on album cover…. It didn’t! Favorite track: Confusion 4/5
This sounds much older than 2004, didn't expect it to be so recent. Very good though, a bit punk, a bit funky, enjoyable overall. Stand-out: Nightmare Part II
This was an ultra early 2000s indie rock album and that’s all it really needed to be. Every song was fun with a bunch of different instrumentation in each track and you will you won’t and railroad were my favs. Solid all around album.
Fun album! Some extraordinary sounds.
Started out like a early 2000s rock band trying to imitate classic rock from the 70s/80s then morphed into something entirely different. Half way through I really noticed the sax began to shine. Suprisingly around the half way mark I think the album really hit its stride. The folky blues rock of the latter songs really fit their vibe and if they had stuck to that theme for the entirety I think it would’ve been a much better album as a whole. Still enjoyed it. 7/10
Head nodding, toe tappingly pleasant. I recognise a lots of these track, I think I might have had the CD 20 years ago. Nothing amazing but an interesting take on 2000 indie.
Fun listen
Really a great suprise
On the one hand, why is this quite regulation slab of landfill Indie on here? On the other, I think I sang every word and it took me immediately back to some of the very happiest times of my life.
An enjoyable albums. One of those that contains loads of tracks that you weren't quite sure who sang them. Nice surprises along the way with a fantastic extended band arrangement.
Mér finnst þetta skemmtilegt.
Just really fun alt rock i think? It's bouncy and groovy. Also I think alt j stole the opening pressure point. Favorite track was you will you won't
Wasn't me
получил большое удовольствие пока слушал альбом
I really enjoyed this!
That was a very fun listen. You can hear that those guys are having fun. 4 stars
I liked it! I preferred the slower songs more so than the upbeat ones. His voice was great - reminded me of the Red Hot Chilly Peppers if I liked the RHCP.
Hadn't heard of these guys but this is good indie stuff. Loved it and will be coming back to it.
Quietly said “oh no…” to myself when this came up because i LOVED this record on its release and feared it would be yet another casualty of the indie bubble’s self inflated. But! This is still a lot of fun. More quirky than other examples of the genre. Listened with a smile on my face.
the 60s influence is strong in this album, initially i was a liiiittle skeptical after the first few listens but i soon grew to enjoy it! not just 60s pop energy, but i'm also feeling a little bit of ska here and there and i'm honestly quite happy with what i just heard.
Fun, cool, swampy retro rock and pop. Sometimes a bit New Orleans-y Dr John, other times a bit Beefheart/Zappa and lots of Merseyside style. Love it. It’s pretty short, but that conciseness adds to the attraction.
No lo conocía. Música accesible fácil de escuchar. En general me ha gustado.
4.0
This was a fun listen with far more going on than you realise at first. I kept wanting to lose interest but then it would draw me back in. I like its vibe. I’m swithering between 3.5 or 4
Awesome funky rock album, surprised I had never heard of them before.
Highlights: Zuton Fever Pressure Point You Will You Won't Remember Me Dirty Dancehall Moons And Horror Shows Don't Ever Think (Too Much) Like the use of various instruments and a big fan of the inclusion of the saxophone. This was a fun album. Started off super strong and ended strong as well. The middle section wasn't at the same level but the album isn't too long so it moves quickly. I will be coming back to this album, atleast in part.
I can't say I've ever heard of this band before listening today, and seeing the cover art and name of the band my mind seemed to make up some ideas of what the album would sound like - images of a '50s alien movie came to mind. What I was left with pleasantly surprised me. From catchy and fun, psychedelic, laid back to more country/bluegrass this album kept me entertained and engaged throughout. One of the things I liked most about the album is how the band kept songs simple without being dull and added enough flair to make it sound like their own. I think they found a sound that hopefully won't be outdated like so many other albums 30-40 years later. Favs: pressure point, nightmare pt 2, nothing to do, remember me
Instantly transported me back to various student house parties in Glasgow in the months following its release - an album that probably won't mean much to anyone from anywhere or anywhen else, but to people who were 17-22 in britain when it came out, it is a solid shot of nostalgia
Mmmm, Me gusto.
Another 00’s group I’ll give a bias rating too because I’m a big fan of the Zutons and think they are very underrated. Not an album I’d recommend to everyone but one I enjoy myself and always come back to, so 4 stars.
AJ: Pressure Point was in one of my old video games. Baseball if I had to guess. It’s fucking great. These guys are The Kinks-y and White Striped. Modest Mice. Fucking weirdos. Good job. Would t-shirt.
I like this album, it has some interesting songs Top tracks: Pressure Point, Havana Gang Brawl, Dirty Dancehall
Good vibe
Really, really good album.
was good
Zuton Fever You Will You Won't Nightmare Part II Remember Me Don't Ever Think (Too Much)
Twas fine
en riktigt stark fyra. det kanske är liite för plain för att det ska bli en femma men många av låtarna är riktigt bra.
Original, genre defying, fun and tight
4=
I really liked this album when it came out, still find it enjoyable and interesting. Eclectic styles mostly done well, some tasty sax. Doesn't grab me like it used to but still a good album. 4 - will definitely listen again
Cool quirky tunes with unexpected chord changes and great arrangements.
Leuk album, vrolijk, lekkere nummers, maar niet echt baanbrekend.
4(-)
An OUSTANDING first two songs, with a relatively solid rest of the album (in particular with the vocals). I quite liked this, and seeing the comparisons with The Coral (which this list introduced me to, and I liked even more). Overall I'm digging this peek into the British side of the 00's garage rock revival.
Quite enjoyable surprisingly. Maybe a touch of bloat.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Zuton fever, You will you won’t
SHACK killed The Zutons. It was a decent 00s indie album. Wouldn't have put it on here like. Fuck it, it's better than all the country albums- have an extra star
Really cool and fun
Garage rock, indie pop. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Folkgarage rockindie pop. Súper chulo!
loved this. previously dismissed what I'd heard of the zutons as them being just 'ok'. listened again already
Enjoyed the style, would listen again 👌
Really enjoyed it
Didn't really know this band but that was a very enjoyable slice of rock and good album
Exists somewhere in a Venn Diagram of The Fratellis, The Killers, The Shins, and Jack White. Yes please!
Ahhh, she saxophone... The Sean Connery of musical instrumentation. In the late '90's and early 2000's there was this belief that any crappy movie could be made better if only Sean Connery was in it. Studios figured this out and it worked for a bit until audiences eventually realized that Sean Connery equals suckfest, making him redundant and leaving us with movies like LXG. In the '80's the same thing happened with the saxophone and well, nothing blows like the saxophone. I can think of one band that successfully used the sax / alto sax (whatever...) during this time and the name of that band that was Morphine (rip Mark Sandman). I hate to admit this, but the sax and the way it's used on this album is a nice add. There aren't any overpowering sax solos, and instead employs some lax toots to carry the rhythm thru. The Zutons are unconventional (and not overtly British) and that's what I like about them. David McCabe's vocals are strong enough to carry a tune without support but isn't above throwing some gutteral ahahhyahh's here and there. This album plays like a bridge from the dirty 60's hippie rancor to thoughtful backroom western saloon and all the way back to Williamsburg. Overall it's a decent find that I was happy to explore.
Good album. Solid on the first listen and worth another go.
I've never heard of the Zutons before, and I'm so glad I did. They are absolutely my shit. I loved this. Saxophone + British rock. Good stuff, man.
i really enjoyed this one. will definitely give it some more listens in the future. wish i had known about it when it was released.
This was a very interesting album because it had a modern sound with a blues/folk undertones i didn’t save any songs but i would probably revisit this later
Initial thoughts: WHO? Final thoughts: Yo, this is actually so sick. I actually saved some of these songs! The songs in the album are weird, but in a good way. They use some sounds that challenged my taste, but I grew to like them as the album went on. Catchy riffs and upbeat singing, what's not to like.
Pretty fun, I appreciate the saxophone and retro aesthetic throughout. Bonus props to these dudes for writing Valerie, even though it isn't on this album. 7/10
New to me. I like it!
Fun but not amazing.
I saw “dad rock” and immediately thought, “I’m going to hate this,” (despite the fact that I am a dad and I like to rock). But I didn’t hate it at all. In fact, I quite liked it. Some of it reminded me of some favorite 60s/70s artists like the Zombies, the Kinks, and Spirit. Good stuff, will listen again. 4 stars.
A fab album from a fab band from a fab city. They don't make 'em like this anymore
I was aware of Zutons but never listened to Zutons, was a highly enjoyable album. Would listen again not sure what they were on about but will enjoy finding out (hopefully).
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I have a soft spot for The Zutons, oh-oh, I can do my "my bessie mate's brother is bessie mates with the singer's brother" thing, yeah yeah, I bore myself sometimes. 4 for nostalgia, the Scouse connection and great banging tunes!
New find! Loved it
"Who Killed...... The Zutons?" by The Zutons is a captivating album that blends indie rock with a touch of funk and soul. Released in 2004, it's a testament to the band's eclectic style and songwriting prowess. Tracks like "Pressure Point" and "Confusion" showcase their knack for catchy melodies and energetic performances. The album's production is polished, allowing the band's distinctive sound to shine. Dave McCabe's distinctive vocals and the band's use of brass instruments create a unique sonic landscape. "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" is a solid and enjoyable listen from start to finish. While it might not have received the same level of attention as some other mid-2000s indie albums, it remains a hidden gem for those who appreciate a fusion of rock, soul, and funk with a dose of infectious energy.
It's no Valerie, but a darn good album. 4 stars.
Grand
I never realised The Zutons were considered big enough to be an essential listen. Before listening to this album, I think the only songs I know by the is Valerie (which isn’t on this album). That certainly leaves me intrigued, so I’m looking forward to listening to this one. Songs I already knew: You Will You Won’t, Confusion Favourites: Confusion, Remember Me Firstly, it turns out I do know more by The Zutons than I realised. This album made me feel 18 again in the local indie rock bar (which, to be fair, likely still play the same much nowadays too). I was expecting pure indie rock, but there was definite folk influence with plenty of acoustic guitar niceness. Overall, I enjoyed this album quite a lot. I haven’t even mentioned how nice the singer’s voice is. Well it is.
What a nice discovery! In 2010 I would have loved this shit
Rock indie
Great variety on this album, can hear a ton of influences. Beatles, temptations, spaghetti western, ska, country, folk, really really good.
Hooky and diverse. Well made, too. One'e ears keeping pricking up at all the tasty flavors and intriguing resonances (White Stripes, Las, some loose, Kinks-y swinging, too). Pretty great from a band one confesses to entirely missing in real time.
Good, will probably not listen again
3.5/5. Nice. This was pretty easy to listen to and I enjoyed it. I would give it another listen at some point.
Recht cooler Sound. Muss die Band mal googeln.
Wasn't familiar but I liked it a lot!
I have a nostalgic thing for this album. It zips along on a lot of charm and warmth, and enjoys itself throughout. They certainly know how to write a pop song really well. Like the Coral with charisma.
Folkgarage rockindie pop. Súper chulo!
A promising debut for a band that ultimately didn't live up to that promise. Still a bangin' record, though. Best track: Remember Me
4.5 love the variety from high paced indie rock bangers to the softer confusion and remember me. Quite a long album with a couple more scene setting tracks in the middle I enjoyed less but overall a strong choice
Upthereds
Had some good tunesm wasn't too big a fan of the slower tunes
7/10 Buen album.
The Zutt-on would be a good nickname for Mohammed. IYKYK
Yep. 2004.
sax makes it a bit more interesting than it would be otherwise, but it's still pretty forgettable.
i saw the zutons last year opening for richard ashcroft and they played zuton fever three fucking times so i had kind of written them off already. i was however pretty impressed with this album, i don’t even think it’s particularly unique it’s just that it’s something i would actually listen to
If it’s era
I listened to this a lot in high school. To this day, I can’t decide whether I actually like it.
Not bad not good?
First listen
Never heard of The Zutons, so the answer I guess is the Atlantic Ocean. Pleasant, but I don't see why they are on this list
this is a three star album but i can absolutely understand how it'dve been five stars in 2004
Pretty cool - I will go back and listen
It was fine. Could be more interesting, but the instrumentation is cool. Not worth anything more than background music though.
3.3 2x enjoyable
Oui bon c'est sympa J'ai pas la zuton fever pour autant mais j'ai passé un moment très correct
Enjoyable w a kind of dashed sensibility which leaves it less than serious
Strong
