Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I should have been a metalhead. Guess it's never too late...

Thrash metal, my beloved ❤️

One of the big 4 thrash bands and probably the most underrated and overlooked but Anthrax have some great tunes and can rock as hard as the rest. Caught In A Mosh, Indians, NFL, I Am The Law & the title track are some of the best thrash tracks ever, great album

Met vlagen zeer energiek, gave wendigen, en lekker ruig. Maar af en toe ook net een beetje matig. Net 4

Anthrax vocals always turn me off initially, but I stuck around for the awesome riffage and this album totally grew on me over the course of the listen. 3.5/5

I’ve been listening to Anthrax since my teens, but I don’t really know if they’re THAT essential. I’d easily swap this for another, less-represented metal genre or even another Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath album. Still, this is as good as they get, and it makes sense that half of it still gets played every night. What made Anthrax stand out is their ability to have fun with themselves, but still take themselves seriously when needed. And that still holds up, on top of solid songwriting. B

Mublanikufesin

i am a metal newbie, but i enjoyed my time with this one. it's aggressive, bombastic, and pretty listenable. the musicianship here is pretty great and the lyrics i enjoyed. pretty cool!

This is trash (literally)

Energetic thrash metal for angry people!

Love the first song

Si, trashea un poco menos que Metallica en su mejor momento, pero eso es un elogio.

Great album to end the work week on. Especially since my entire company went down this morning with the Crowdstrike/Microsoft update, but I had my laptop off so I was spared. You could say that I'm Among the Living. I enjoyed reading that they opened for Metallica for a while because they sound similar, in a good way. Sort of longer songs, but their vocalist reminds me more of Iron Maiden in some ways (they even have a similar song about Native Americans). Either way, this was a great album.

Some tasty licks

AAAAAH CRAZY FUN ALBUM, LEG WAS SHAKING THE ENTIRE TIME! AM I OKAY? PROBABLY NOT.

I really liked this album. It's an upbeat combination of punk and metal with those soaring 80s vocals.

Apparently I’m into thrash metal nowadays

Anthrax are justifiably in the top 4 thrash bands of the 80s, if not all time. This album was produced in a clean, no-nonsense style that allows all of the guitars, drums and vocals to be well separated and clearly audible. The lyrics cover environmental collapse, grief, the plight of native Americans, as well as two tracks based on Stephen King stories and a phenomenal song about Judge Dredd from someone who is a mega fan of 2000AD. Enormous fun!

Really enjoyed, solos and vocals a bit much at time, but really solid sound and message throughout.

While it slaps at high volumes and has an amazing uplifting message, it's the same song nine times and only slaps at painfully high volumes. No thanks.

I bet this is hellish fun live. Those high vocals reminds me s little of Judas Priest. This is an album I'd have to listen to if I were in a certain mood. 3.5 stars

It's honestly pretty listentoable metal. I'd keep listening to this!

Wow, I need to explore more Anthrax. A really good 80s thrash metal album!

Don’t like metal but this was cool

I rarely listen to Thrash Metal but I enjoy it when I do. It's like rolling down a hill or riding a rollercoaster. Feels dangerous and exciting but quite safe, really.

Liked this one a lot more than I was expecting. Though the lyrics bounced between serious topics at times and utter crap at others, the music itself shreds. Will likely listen again.

among the living i am the law indians one world a.d.i./horror of it all

I’ve learned that I generally like higher pitched metal vocalists than lower ones from this project (like this or Iron Maiden). This is just a fun album to listen to - who doesn’t like a good metal album?

So much music is both comprised of and decorated with vagaries, subtleties, and ambiguity. There's a lot of cognitive load trying to parse meaning, to unwind a metaphor, to extract contextual clues - like riding the train to someplace you've never been. {That's an analogy not a metaphor} While sometimes interesting and entertaining (appeals to taste notwithstanding), the effort can be exhausting, especially when traveling to a frontier where you must have your wits about you at all times, aware, ready for surprises of all kinds, friendly or otherwise. Sometimes it's really nice to avoid all that and just get blasted with a straightforward message in a forceful way. Back it up with technical mastery and you've hit a sweet spot. Anthrax doesn't hit that spot for everyone all the time, myself included. But today, nailed it. No complaints.

Thrash metal was just what I needed. High energy and a blast to listen to.

Top shelf 80's metal. It is propulsive and unrelenting, just a total badass headbang the whole way through. And this is an iconic album cover, I love the artwork. I've never listened to Anthrax before, but I think I should have been paying more attention. I always knew Scott Ian was a cool dude (because of seeing him on rock 'n' roll jeopardy), but I just didn't feel compelled to pick up any Anthrax records. I'm digging it though. I feel like I could punch a hole through the bullshit and conquer this day!! FUCK YEAH!

Ez dump on metal. 4.5

4 for bri ish guy list, 3.5 for rym

Good soft 4

Turn between a 3 and a 4 for this one. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and go for a 4... liked the start of the album but felt it drifted a little and some of the songs are too long.

Also classic but in a different way.. it’s hard to appreciate Loretta Lynn and Anthrax without a palette cleanse. Still pretty efing good though.

I had several days' worth stacked up and noted this in the queue. I'd honestly been kind of dreading it but it wasn't the screaming, thrashing mess that I somehow thought it would be. Vocals are pretty clear, melodies are involved, and the guitar is slappin'.

Enjoyed this, never heard Indians outside of Guitar Hero.

Anthrax are probably the member of thrash metal’s “Big Four” that listeners outside the subgenre are least familiar with. If they wished to remedy that, though, this is where they should start: a bruising collection of alternately humorous and biting songs.

The biggest surprise of the project so far for me. Never thought I’d find any level of metal I’d love. Let alone thrash metal! Brilliant! Great drums, great guitars and vocals that actually let you listen to that. Marvellous - will be a time and a place album to play but over the moon i now have it in my arsenal 3.6

Definitely goes hard.. nice head-banger that can hang with the likes of Metallica and Megadeth. Wasn’t sure if I’d like it as much as I did, although it could have used a reprieve from the high octane chugging. 4/5

Fun metal. Bonkers lyrics at times.

I did actually like this, I wasn't sure if I would. I've never listened to Anthrax before but my brother is a big metal fan and has been in local thrash bands for a couple of decades now. So I got some context and that made me really appreciate this. Indians hit different when you know the singer is Iroqois, for example. This was more fun than other metal I've listened to, I might listen again.

Cools punks used "Reign in Blood" to get into metal; dorky punks used "Among the Living." I have always been a dorky punk, and I think this may be my favorite thrash album. If you were a preteen who liked comic books, Stephen King, and were a bit too politically informed for a middle schooler, you're going to like this album, even if you're now a full-on adult. I'm this album's target audience. My biggest gripes with it have always been the mixing being a bit muddy (your producer was right, guys), and that the songs are a bit too long, but that's more a critique with them being a thrash band instead of a punk band, which is a personal problem, and not a valid critique. This said, I don't think there's a bad song on here, it's just pieces of songs that I would rearrange, which is a testament that this is great if the critiques are mostly about personal preference. Easily my favorite thrash metal album.

Fellas, is it gay to like melody? But seriously even though there's not much interesting melody or progression, there's plenty of energy, talent, and catchy lyrics to make this a fun listen

It's got Maiden's dual-guitar threat, Megadeth's killing speed, and all of the mosh-ready aggression of hardcore punk. I think 50 minutes is a bit much, but I can't really find a track I didn't enjoy. Call it a 4.5. Favorite tracks: "Among The Living", "Caught In A Mosh", "Indians"

7.5/10

i surprisingly really like it!

A metal album that did exhaust me. I actually enjoyed listening to it a couple of times. "Indians" was a little weird though.

Lourdeur, rapidité, voix de tête, mythologie propre au genre: tout ce que j’attends d’un album de métal

Excellent music, angsty 6th grade lyrics

More enjoyable than most thrash metal albums.

I know Anthrax from Tony Hawk Pro Skater, only a couple of songs. This album contains some metal songs that are truly on par with Metallica.

Great album

I forget that I really like metal if there's no lyrics. I wonder if there's a version of metal that's just instrumentals. Honestly, this really isn't my genre no matter how much I listen to it, but I did like this! I found it a very compelling listen.

Great. I played this a lot when I was young. They're the most fun of the big 4. Favorite song: Skeleton in the closet.

Verry loud, verry metall, verry speedy

Du bon métal qui cogne bien !! 4.80

Thrash metallin kulta aikaa. Caught In A Moss ja Indians Anthraxin parhautta ja Among The Living ja I Am The Law taisi kanssa olla tuttuja.

Great metal album. A lot more interesting than I expected. Thought I'd hear thrashy noise, but there are a lot of cool parts in songs. Thick, full rhythm guitar tracking, great bass lines and tone (a la Iron Maiden), and cool. Headbanging all the way.

Metal but faster, what’s not to love. Not fully power metal and also not so defined by subject matter as to feel like a gimmick.

Great thrash metal. Didn't notice the progressive lyrics back in the 80s but I do now. 4.44 stars.

Of the big 4, Slayer was my favorite musically, and Anthrax was my favorite attitude wise. But I never really liked the Joey's sung vocals and I really never like chanted slogan style vocals from Joey and Scott. This is a 5 star album for sure. But I really struggle to get past the singing. But I don't think that should be a black mark against Joey. He seems like a great dude and he has done a great job of sperating himself from the pack.

Some really solid thrash for today's album. Anthrax are one of the "big 4" of 80's thrash metal (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth). The drums are super tight on this album, and the vocals are fantastic! By times you can hear influence from early punk in the speed and delivery of the guitar parts. Overall, a fantastic record. Admittedly, I haven't given Anthrax much attention before now. No real reason why, I just focused more on Metallica and Slayer than Megadeth or Anthrax. Maybe this will be my sign to listen to more of Anthrax's catalog. Favourite songs: Indians, Caught in a Mosh, I Am The Law, Among the Living, Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.), Imitation of Life, A Skeleton in the Closet Least favourite songs: One World 4/5

Imitation of Life! Didn’t expect to like this as much as I did.

\m/ My face meat did not slough off of my skull. My eyes and ears did not spontaneously bleed black bile. I did not find myself somehow pregnant with Our Holy Lucifers own child. I did have a good time tho.

Very good metal.

rawkin' good time. 4 stars.

Kids loved it

Ah, fuck it, lots of energy on this one, this gets a 4.

When I first heard about the 1001 Albums book, this was one of several albums that I bought from the list. I'd heard of Anthrax before, thanks to their collaboration with Public Enemy appearing in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and seeing Scott Ian on several of those VH1 I Love the... shows, but I'd never listened to any of their albums (wait, I think "Caught in a Mosh" was on a Guitar Hero game). I remember appreciating it back when I first listened to it, but it wasn't the sort of album that I would revisit often. Listening to it today, I still feel the same way. I think it's a great album, and I appreciate its significance in the history of music, but it's not something I'd listen to a lot. Thrash metal is not something I enjoy often, but man, Anthrax can indeed thrash. The guitars are loud, abrasive, and fast, and the drums come at you like a mortar shells fired from a machine gun. I loved the use of fierce vocals and politically charged lyrics that are typically found in hardcore. At a time when thrash metal was peaking in popularity, Anthrax managed to stand out, even when bands like Metallica were finding a wider audience. I didn't come away from this album with a favorite song, but I still thought it was a great and valuable listen.

Not my kind of metal but it's a classic for a reason

I don't think I can make any argument that these guys are better than the likes of Black Sabbath or Pantera or a pantheon of others. But they're also not notably worse. Sometimes you want some uptempo shredding, and today this fit the bill perfectly.

Great thrash album.

I had gotten into Anthrax from their last 2 studio albums. So "Among The Living" is definitely one I knew pretty well. It is definitely up there in defining thrash metal, along with "Master of Puppets." And it has a song about Judge Dredd in it? How could you not love that? I like their last two albums a little more because they got me in to the band, but "Among The Living" is definitely a good headbanging album for me. I would have to listen to it more to define it as a classic, though...

Strong nostalgia

Always liked metal music especially in my teens so I don't know why I was expecting this album to be a low scorer....gladly it isn't! Enjoyed the riffs and annoyed my teenage self didn't give Anthrax a try...

This was good. Nice thrash metal. Surprising how mellow it sounds for today's metal

Very fun metal, remembered a few songs from my childhood.

- CLASSIC THRASH METAL - Never really got into Anthrax, insanely dope - Insane speed of the songs - Caught In A Mosh, I Am The Law, Among The Living

- Love the frenetic drumming - Everything other than the singing is fantastic - I think I really enjoy speed metal

I Am The Law is great, pretty good album

Some enjoyable thrash metal, with non-generic lyrics. Not my favourite of the genre but still good fun

I can see why it's so iconic, but it's a bit ridiculous for my personal taste. A fun chunky noise for an hour though.

I wouldn’t have thought I’d enjoy a metal album however this wasn’t as heavy as I imagined. Favourite track is caught in a mosh

This is a really solid thrash album and possibly the last good American thrash album of the 80s.

I live my life by a few simple rules, and one of them is: if it's good enough for Beavis and Butthead, it's good enough for me. Best track: Caught in a Mosh

I didn’t care for the opening track, but their style grew on me as I listened to the rest of the album. Probably my least favorite of the Big Four, but growing on me a bit.

If you want something to get your heart racing so much that you start to see a bright light hurling towards you... this is the album for you!

Like a slightly worse Metallica

This album and Iron Maiden sent me on a pretty gnarly metal tangent that distracted me from this list for a bit. Anyway this is some top notch thrash. I can see why they're part of the "Big 4" of metal. Their politically edged sound is so complimentary to the hyper aggressive sound that bands like Metallica and Megadeth were offering at the same time. There's a purity to this level of thrash that beckons you to listen to more. 4.5

Solid thrash record. Probably my favorite anthrax album.

I didn't really listen to Anthrax until they released Bring the Noise with PE. Which is interesting because I enjoyed the Anthrax side project S.O.D. Amoung the Living is great model glue sniffing thrash. So you are going to love it or hate it. Only minus is even though it is a single, Indians sounds dated and out of place on the album

Thrash-metal de las primeras épocas. Ritmos endiablados, guitarras afiladas y voz con carácter. Algunos temas, un tanto parecidos entre sí

I've been listening to this record all day long. It's driven me to quite an interesting mental state. For the last 30 minutes I've been furiously scratching my scrotum. It's now bleeding and I feel okay with it. It's nice, you know? Like a comfortable pair of slippers or an unknown tongue in your ear. My eyes are twitching and I've clamped my anus wide open. A girl from over the road is inserting Wotsits into it via a funnel as I squeal and ask for more. She's shy and unassuming, but I think she might be a little bit confused about what's happening here. I'll pay her the usual rate and hope she doesn't spill all the details to my chums at the country club. Some of those guys are really straight laced and dislike some of my silly ways. I wish them well and hold no grudges, but if any of them made fun of me I would slice theirs dicks off and wear them as a skirt.

I'm not much of a thrash guy, and I don't think that this album will make me a thrash guy, but it was high-octane fun.

It rips

Proper trash metal. Good stuff!! Saved songs: I Am The Law, Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.),Medley: A.D.I. / Horror Of It All, Imitation Of Life

Beefy and aggressive, exactly what you want. Not usually my bag but I missed it when it was over. Excellent for anxty cycle to work

Better than I thought

Relentless and punk and grand

Hell yeah

I should be surprised at how cohesive and consistent this album is. The instrumentation is tight and hits hard. Not crazy about the vocals, but that's about it.

I never liked Anthrax growing up, but recently I've heard some that were pretty good. I did enjoy this album for the most part.

Good ol‘ Anthrax <3

Really efficient

Anthrax was never really my thing, but you've got to respect the high level of musicianship that went into this record. Anthrax really are a tight machine of a band. There is no fat in this music, not a single unnecessary note. I would also add that Anthrax is pretty cool because they straddle the line between punk and metal better than just about any band. That's a hard balance to maintain, and they've pretty much perfected it. Fave Songs: Indians, One World, Caught in a Mosh, Among the Living, Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)

Hilarious. Not amazing, but hilarious. And sometimes thats enough to make it great. 4/5

It's at the fun end of thrash, rather than the 'woo I'm dark and edgy" end and is a lot more enjoyable for it. It'll probably never be my favourite style of music, but I enjoyed this, in that it passed by faster than its 40 minute length, and made me smile at least twice!

Some great classic thrash on here. Could feel a bit samey at times, but went hard throughout.

I listened to Metallica right before this album so it might have influenced my relatively high score

Not a metal fan but this opened my eyes to the genre in a big way

not my usual cup of tea but they really said “land back” and i respect that

NFA. Nice Fukin Album.

mublanikufesin

Loved it. bit of a cookie cutter sound to them these days, but it's not the 80s anymore is it?

Out of the thrash scene, Anthrax was one of the two bands I had time for, the other one being Suicidal Tendencies. At the time I didn't know exactly why; today I can explain that that relates to the many elements that they incorporate into their sound, from NYHC to early rap. There really is a form of richness and subtlety to their approach that goes far beyond 80s metal. The run of albums from Spreading The Disease to Persistence Of Time is absolutely brilliant, with Among The Living being their peak. Tons of riffage and mental drumming, changes in tempo and chord progressions that are simply breathtaking, with lyrics that swing from social matters to pop culture references, and the ability to not take themselves too seriously, everything is in the right place for the listener to engage in an interesting listening experience all while having fun.  Not only their musical choices were courageous at the time, but the fact that by the next album they would showcase a skate shoes, coloured bermuda, and white t-shirts style (as opposed to the all black with leather jacket that was mandatory for a metal band)  makes Anthrax the most thrilling band of the era.

I always gave Anthrax a wide berth for one reason or the other. But this album definitely showed why they were considered part of the Big 4 in Thrash Metal.

I like Anthrax. Lots of energy and good for an occasional laugh. I was also a big Stephen King fan back then, especially The Stand. Among the Living is peak Anthrax. Great cover art, too.

The people's thrash. Out of the Big 4, Anthrax was the most relatable. Contrast with hair metal bands, they wore t-shirts and shorts. Vocal approach reminiscent of hardcore, this was the gateway album for punk fans into metal. And their lyrical subject? Not about politics or Cthulhu. Just looking at the first 3: "Among the Living" is based on Stephen King's The Stand, "Caught in a Mosh" screams rebel, "I am the Law" is about the comic character Judge Dredd... these are nerdy subjects appealing to your average angsty teen. There's humor and energy in every track, Scott Ian and Joey Belladonna giving a hell of a performance. Among the Living was their breakthrough album and the most representative of 80s thrash. Their next album would stray further into skate punk territory. I know them mostly for their collab with Public Enemy, so hearing them for themselves is pretty exciting, and they exceed expectations. Out of the four, Anthrax was always the outcast for not having the insanity or speed of the other three, but I consider them to be just as solid and have just as much personality. The mixing is well done. You can hear everyone well, and they all play well. Belladonna's voice is crisp, and the back vocals serve their purpose. The solos are a bit forgettable, and there's a couple weak tracks later in the album. They usually make up for their lyrics and Ian's and Belladonna's performances. But no track felt too long, and with 9 tracks I fully enjoyed the ride.

Oh shit man you guys made me like a metal album. There's a lot of DNA here for later pop-punk especially. I love the energy and the fact that you can actually hear the vocals

Un dels grans clàssics del thrash, merescudament. La banda en plena eclosió d'adrenalina i inspiració, amb uns primers sis temes que són sis clàssics. És el més a prop que van ser d'apropar-se a les grans obres dels altres 4 grans noms del génere

Better than expected.

\m/\m/

I feel like most of these songs are pretty good. Actually love the more punk approach to thrash on this thing. With that being said, this album is very one dimensional. Especially after a couple of listens, this wears it down a fair bit. One of the few acts I'd rather listen to songs instead of an album. Still I can' t be to critical of this.

Pretty good

Previously, I had dismissed Anthrax as bog standard metal but that was refreshingly progressive.

It thrashes, which is what it set out to do.

Antes eu considerava que não precisar escutar mais opções de metal, assim perdia riffs fundamentais como do Anthrax

Good for the Genre. I enjoyed it more than expected. I would gladly listen again.

Yeah, its kinda good. I honestly like Anthrax better than Iron Maiden.

Viel besser als gedacht. Teilweise richtig kluger Pop aber auch darüber hinaus

I've never been a fan of thrash metal. I tried listening to Slayer and Anthrax as a teenager, but didn't really get it and went back to punk music. However, I'm amazed I didn't enjoy Anthrax at least, since this album is basically as close to hardcore punk as metal gets. I like it. It's tightly controlled, fast and melodic. The singer sounds good. It's fun, but without becoming full-blown cheesy nonsense. My only complaint is the shouted gang vocals, which sounded dumb in NYHC punk and still sound dumb here. 4/5 - maybe even a 4.5.

An absolute thrash/NYHC classic

Tasty thrash metal treat if you need a punch in the face, and today I needed one. Guitarist Scott Ian described this album as... “It really felt like we were being guided by the power of metal and it was out of our hands. Satan was channeling his will through us and we couldn’t help but succeed.”

Isn't what I would usually listen to, but that might have to change now. Really fantastic.

Still prefer John Bush 🤘

the last half of this album goes hard as hell

Shreds.

Banger!

Yeah. So love the album cover… After Metallica’s Justice for All and Slayer’s Reign in Blood I think I can honestly say 80’s thrasher metal is not my scene. I just don’t jam to the speed. No variation on it does a thing for me. I dig Metallica’s Black album. But relentless machine gunning drums pretty much destroy everything I love about percussion. Anthrax is supposed to be “bouncier and punker” than Slayer, which seemed so potentially good, from my standpoint. But… yeah. Um… like I said. Not my scene. 3 Boolean: True? Don’t really know how important this album is to this sub-genre. Don’t care about this sub genre enough to figure it out.

9 songs The instrumentals are great, and I generally enjoyed the songs. My only gripe is that the vocals don't have as much bite or grit as I feel like the songs deserve and need. Joey's voice is very Iron Maiden like, and the instrumentation underneath doesn't really complement it; I think John Bush's voice fits Anthrax a lot better imho.

A solid thrash-y album. Not the hugest metalhead let alone thrash fan, but one thing I noticed straight away something I liked from this was the louder bass guitar sound. I find the Metallica's thrash era has reduced bass sound for some reason. But thrash with bass guitar adds a hell lot of more punch to the overall sound. The production is pretty solid, thank god it's not like And Justice For All's production. The lyrics seem to be pretty typically for the genre, anti-authoritarian, war, anti-corruption sort of stuff. The vocals weren't the strongest point, though I think for thrash that isn't really the focus. His voice seemed a bit like Bruce Dickinson in the first song, but once I sat and listened I started to hear my nuances. Might return to this one if I'm in a metal (especially thrash) sort of mood and want to rediscover or discover some classics of the genre. Highlight Song/s: "Among The Living" and "Indians"

Fast. Metal. This one is hard. I want to give it a 4 cuz it rocks and shreds but it gets a little too much repetitive and tiring too. 🤷‍♂️

Not bad. Tolerable to kinda cool.

I'm not a fan of the genre, but this is a good album. The musicianship was excellent. Even though it's thrash/heavy metal, I could hear lots of classical influences. It was also nice that you could hear what the singer was singing and what he was saying was often meaningful.

This is the first metal album on the list and the first one I would consider way outside my listening comfort zone. I would say most of these songs are sons I would change the channel on if they came on the radio that's why this is such a nice exercise in giving everything a full listen. Idk how much this is true but this sounds so typical to me of metal (google says theyre one of the big 4 of the thrash metal genre). I was particularly surprised by the song cry for the Indians about the plight of native people in this country and one world about unity and the cold war which is just not what I thought metal covered lyrically.

This is really fucking overrated. The riffs are amazing and the drums are really good as well. The problem begins when Joey Belladonna opens his mouth; the man cannot sing for shit. The best song is the opening track and then the rest goes downhill from there. The vocals are just a major barrier.

Much better than expected from a Metal/Thrash album. I normally avoid this genre, mainly due to the usual incomprehensible grunting and guttural roaring of the vocalist. But at least this dude sung. The continuous frantic pace is still cliche. I’d give this a 2.5 if I could, but I’ll round it up to a 3 as I like the album cover!

I think this is pretty bad but liked it, if that makes sense?

Interesting album. Not amazing. Liked a few of the tracks but really wasn’t blown away by much of anything. There’s better Anthrax tracks than most on this.

Kul lyssning, om än inte det bästa som jag har hört i genren.

Röjigt!

Two metal classics back to back. I've been wanting to check out Anthrax for quite some time and I'm glad I finally did. Might take sometime before I really fall in love with the band though. Favorite track: I Am The Law 3.5/5

My first listen to anything by Anthrax, other than their _Bring the Noise_ collab with Public Enemy. Not a fan of thrash really so no surprise that this was just ok, and much like what I was expecting. There were some decent riffs and the vocals were pretty accessible for the genre but generally, it alll felt a little stiff and predictable. I wouldn't complain if someone threw it on but not one I'll be reaching for myself again.

Musicianship is great, the vocals are corny. Metal is kinda like stand up comedy for me, the old stuff just doesn't hold up. I didn't grow up listening to this so I have no nostalgia for it and would rather listen to something more modern when I'm in a heavy mood (which is admittedly a rare occasion). Ok, they got me on the last song "Imitation of Life", it fucking rips and the vocalist goes into kind of a punk thing. I dig it. Added that to my 1001 playlist and bumped up my rating from 2 to 3

It isn't Metallica but its a fun album to listen to. 3.5/5

Not my type of thing most of the time, but I enjoyed this.

banco mucho, pero honestamente no es mi genero! todavia no puedo entrarle perdon. Pero reconozco que está piola, simplemente no es para mi

It’s not bad. Nicely layered instruments. Melody is on the weak side. It’s like a beautiful mille crepe cake but tastes mediocre.

Like Metallica but without the catchy riffs. From time to time Dimebag aces it with a harmonized Lizzy/Queen riff, but mostly it's chugging without a great riff.

I like the sound but I miss something remarkable or unique. So I prefer Megadeth or Metallica instead. favourite: "Indians" 2,5

Las dos primeras canciones me gustaron bastante pero el metal melodico ya no me gusto nada, not my thing 6/10

this sounds pretty average

Feels like your typical 80s metal band but not bad.

I’m certain I’m not the target demographic for this album, but nevertheless I liked it anyway. Not a band I’ll likely return to but I’m the realm of “heavy Metal” I’ll let it serve as a barometer of what I might be into…

I thought this was going to be harder thrash than it was, and found myself enjoying it. I'm a simple metal guy and mostly just like Metallica, but this was good

It’s so cool to learn more about the original influences for thrash metal! Not my usual casual listening choice but very nice.

My thrash metal tastes are pretty limited. I mainly gravitate to Metallica when I have the itch. However, this album was surprisingly good. I am the law was a blazing good time. 3.5/5.

This is the good noise. I am glad that trash metal is included in this list as well None of the songs on this album really stuck though

80s metal Favorite track: caught in a mosh other picks: Indians, among the living

I have a limit to the amount of this kind of hardcore thrashing heavy metal I can listen to, and the length of this album comes perilously close to surpassing that limit. Still, there's no denying these guys were great at doing the kind of thing they wanted to do. If that thing is not for me, that's not really on them.

Yeah that's definitely an album.

raahhhhhhhhhhhh ja lekker albumpie maar ik heb niet zo veel met thrash metal los

Though I don’t necessarily like thrash, Anthrax has a soft spot in my heart for their funny commentary on the anti-establishment themes. Scott Ian is a great metal guitarist, and the rhythm section holds it down with driving beats. This is their best album, but have always been a fan of their collaboration with Public Enemy. 3⭐️

It was okay. Typical Anthrax. Nothing special

Y'all ain't ready to face the truth that Anthrax is ✨️culture✨️ and it shows

When punk went metal.

hard heavy hitting metal. not really my vibe, but would slap when playing tony hawk pro skater

Ja, wat vind ik hier nou van. De punky nummers ga ik tbh best goed op, maar de meer thrash metal stukken weer minder. Decent.

Pretty fun thrash metal. Not as good as its contemporarys but i could listen to this again. If youre a fan of thrash metal youll probably emjoy this 7/10 Favourite: Indians Least Favourite:A.D.I. / Horror of It All

Helt ok.

It suddenly dawned on me whilst listening to this album is that there is no other genre of music where the bands name fits perfectly with the music being played. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Death Angel, Havoc, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, this lot Anthrax as well as many others could only be thrash metal exponents. If I were to start a thrash metal band think I’d go for something like The Fluffy Bunnies to be different and get noticed. I normally get these musings when listening to something which has become a chore and my brain seeks higher stimulation elsewhere. But that is not quite the case here. Unlike a lot of thrash ‘vocalist's’ who usually only growl rather than sing, I can actually hear what’s being sung. There is also a welcome absence of those industrial sounds and banging’s which seem to blight other albums. Instead there are some of good guitar riffs played at 90 mph. The speed everything is delivered is admirable but not good for continued listening of over 15 minutes. But I found the first 15 minutes rather enjoyable albeit if I were to pick another 15 later elsewhere on the album I doubt I would be able to tell the difference. This is my ongoing problem with this stuff in that it all sounds a bit ‘samey’. 3/5 29/4/26

Big metalhead here, I've never been mad on Anthrax. They're the most forgettable of the big 4, but having listened to this they're maybe the most accessible - at least for a thrash band. This doesn't stink, but I'm unlikely to revisit it

It's thrash. I don't think it adds anything new to the table, but it definitely thrashes.

Way more enjoyable than the laughable grumpy antics of Metallica and especially Megadeath but not quite as much fun as Slayer. Interesting reading how they were so excited to work with veteran producer Eddie Kramer and then he was initially a bit nonplussed about what they were doing. And then the disagreement over the final mix. I think you can hear all that. The guitars are weirdly muted/buried just a little bit in certain places for a thrash album. The vocals sometimes seem like they are floating above the mix and sometimes overwhelming the guitars. None of that particularly bothered me as I thought it added to the scrappy feel of the thing. But I was surprised at how much time it took them to get that scrappy sound. It does sound very live which is cool .

Good old Heavy Metal, a little too raw for me to listen to voluntarily.

Following Marvin Gaye’s orchestral soul masterpiece with full-throttle thrash metal is possibly the most dramatic single-step pivot this project has served up, and the context didn’t help. A long work day and a Marvin Gaye hangover are not ideal conditions for Among the Living — though in fairness, it’s hard to imagine conditions where this would land as personally essential. The talent is real and worth naming honestly. Anthrax are the most playful and groove-aware of the Big Four thrash acts, and Scott Ian’s rhythm guitar work gives the record a propulsive backbone that’s genuinely impressive. The humor and self-awareness that led them to collaborate with Public Enemy and write songs about Stephen King novels distinguishes them from the pure aggression of their peers. These are musicians who clearly love what they do. The problem is simple exhaustion. The relentlessness that defines thrash metal’s appeal to its devotees is exactly what makes it difficult for this particular listener — the same diagnosis that landed Rust in Peace at a barely-there three a few records back. The craft is undeniable. The personal connection is nonexistent. Would never choose to listen to it, would never call it bad. A three for the talent. Honestly earned, honestly limited.

I know they're legends, but this just isn't a style I get into. I gave it a listen. Can't say I'd ever listen to them again. I will give them more respect than the Coldplay I just rated a 2, so I guess they get a 3.

decently enjoyable. not my normal music but fine

Yep. That’s thrash metal. I will give them that vocally, there are elements of punk in the performance which at least separates their sound a little from others in the genre. But it still feels like every song is literally the same. That being said, it’s not terrible. But I don’t get how people can listen to this over and over without getting bored. 3/5

Finally got around to this one. Tons to love—the riffs are hard as fuck, the bass and drums are groovy, the solos are laser focused and unique, and the production is super punchy, probably my favorite on any thrash album. Unfortunately the vocals just aren’t my bag. If your name isn’t Bruce Dickinson or Rob Halford, it takes a lot to convince me on the clean and at times operatic style of vocals. Perhaps I can at least tolerate them if it means I get to have my ass beat by those riffs again.

I would vibe with this more if it had more bass and if I didn't get a 2 hour orchestral metal album last week.

Although I listen to a lot of metal thrash hasn't been a subgenre that I ventured in to much. I have of course heard the big bands including some songs from Anthrax before but never really listened through an album. It sounds mostly like what I was expecting but the singing is much faster at times than I would expect. That fast singing the I feel doesn't really work well with the tempo of the music is what gives this a lower score for me. The instruments sound great with the kind of distortion I was expecting. It was fun listening through an entire album in the genre and that is exactly the thing I love about doing this list.

I’m not a fan of the genre myself but can understand the appreciation of this album.

This is fine metal. I have heard much worse and much better. Definitely right in the middle for a group I have never given a thought to.

A solid listen, good musicality, listened to the whole thing despite genre not always speaking to me.

Not my thing but not bad also! Definitely one of the more tolerable flavors in the genre for me.

Excellent straight-ahead thrash, with a more punk twist than expected. Still, probably not the best of the genre, and can start to feel a bit samey after a while.

50# yeah metal finally (im not much of a metalhead but i'd like to get into it) never heard anything from Anthrax, but already heard the name somewhere.

decent

Nice metal album. Nothing spectacular though.

Not mine. I think 3 Stars are fair

A bit of a wild ride - first i didn't like it, then I did, then I didn't and then I did again. I enjoyed the Sabbath undertones but am not a speed/thrash metal fan generally

This is #day591 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about some thrash metal for a spring Sunday morning? I don't mind, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of this kind of music either. When it comes to Metallica, though, it feels different. Maybe it's because they're the household name of the genre, or maybe it's because they were the only thrash metal band I was exposed to in my teenage years (even though it was '90s Metallica). Anyway, this record stands on its own merits, delivering 40 minutes of raw thrash and cementing itself as one of the genre's cornerstones. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day592.

Anthrax play technical thrash metal riffs while the main singer’s vocals have the epic, wind-machine-in-his-hair drama you’d find in an 80s heavy metal band. There’s also some shouting and controlled chaos that feels more like hardcore punk. It’s a fun, unpretentious mix. They’re an impressive band that are here to rock. 🤙 I like this but it’s a bit monochromatic for my taste. I guess I do tend to think about music as having color, and Anthrax’s music feels mostly black-and-white and grayscale. Is it the production that feels a little thin? Or maybe flat? I’m not sure what it is, but something about the way this is produced is holding me back from feeling this music at a gut level. But I respect the energy. Anthrax is probably insane live.

Anthrax rip. Probably one of the more underrated mega thrash bands, when everyone tends to look towards early Metallica / Megadeth / Sepultura first. Some great heavy metal lyricism going on here- angry aggressive music with lyrics that promote peace and are against violence and hate. I always loved that about the genre. "Indians" is one of the better thrash metal tracks ever. It's catchy, aggressive, has a cool theme, and most metal heads will start humming that chorus if you mention the song. Solid album. I want to give it a 4 because it's fitting my criteria of "really solid album with a few songs on it that are really important to the genre", but I think overall it's not quite in that S tier of great thrash albums.

Thrash metal.

A little partial because I've seen them twice in concert at M3. If you like real heavy metal music you'll love this. I've never been a huge metal fan and this album doesn't capture their live energy but it's decent

This is almost like trance guitar it sounds the same in every song

Top : Caught in a Mosh Flop : Medley: ADI / Horror of It All

Despite being a life-long metalhead and STRONG thrash advocate, Anthrax simply never clicked with me. I like the slightly punk-leaning tendencies, and when those guitars open up the throttle, riffs purr like a kitten, but the vocal delivery of Joey Belladonna always put me off. I typically try to avoid letting the sound of the vocalist overly influence my experience as that tends to fade with repeated listens, but 'twas a hang-up. Now that I've sat with it a minute, shit's still a bit cornball, but I appreciate the snarl and how he rhythmically compliments the riffage. Push come to shove, I'm reaching for an Exodus record, but I got room for this!

Pretty fun headbangin album, but not a whole lot more. Definitely has a hardcore punk-influenced sound to its thrashiness (particularly with gang vocals and general bass tone), and they can rip when they really pick up the speed. The music is more straightforward and approachable than a lot of thrash. So I’m not sure there’s much here that I wouldn’t listen to another band for.

I generally like metal, and this had some really cool solos and riffs. Unfortunately, the vocals were a bit too "shouty" for me and it felt like it was a bit too noisy and less musical for my own tastes. Overall, probably a solid 3 stars. Favorite Track: Among The LIving

I’ve always assumed I wouldn’t like Anthrax despite never hearing them so listening to this only confirmed what I suspected. I can understand the appeal, at times it’s quite good musically, but something about it just leaves me a little uninspired. I was playing it in the car yesterday and so asked my son what he thought and he said “medium”, then proceeded to rate it at “60”, I agreed with him.

Among The Living is as good as any other thrash album I've heard, but that isn't saying much because I'm not the biggest fan of thrash. There have been points in my life where I've enjoyed this type of music, but listening to entire albums feels like a pain sometimes. Every song sounds the same, but none of them are bad, I would simply rather not sit through 50 minutes of repeating guitar riffs and fast paced music that feels like a chore to sit through.

this was ok just some vaguely boring metal

My introduction to Anthrax was their collab with Public Enemy on Bring Tha Noise. Speed metal. Seems like it would be good workout music, but not much else.

This was a very middle of the road thrash metal album. Nothing really stood out to me.

Dentro de que no es mi rollo, no me ha espantado

3.8/5 solid thrash

Mir persönlich zu laut, aber immerhin handgemacht und stilistisch konsequent durchgezogen.

Not bad at all. This was my first listen of Anthrax with a background of Slayer, Metallica, the standard stuff. Good little tunes that chug right along.

It’s a bit odd to say but I wish this was louder. I had to turn my speakers up louder than I would normally to be able to fully immerse myself in it. This has a very clean sound. The drumming and guitar work are very good here. Sometimes the melodies reminded me of Iron Maiden. I think I liked this just as much as Peace Sells by Megadeth. This got better on repeat listens. Favorite songs were Caught In A Mosh, Efilnikufesin, and Indians.

2.7 2x listened around Asheville then again next day on drive home

This album started out repetitive and uninteresting but finished strong with some great drumming better lyrics and guitar work.

Classic 90s speed metal.

I've never listened to Anthrax and very minimal if any other thrash metal, but I enjoyed this album. Probably not something I'll come back to though. I feel like they would be great live.

Not for me…

This had a lot of things I liked. The music was good. The drums were killer. The songs and vocals for me were just ok. 3/5

The good old Project has been very helpful in enabling me to distinguish between metal sub-genres. This one is thrash. It brings to mind, immediately, Dads on a mad one, with quite baggy jeans, a Motorhead t shirt and maybe some sort of leather jerkin. That's different to some of the other ones, which bring to mind real-ale weirdos in basements talking about goblins, or elfin women shreiking over noise. Of them all, maybe thrash is the one for me. I didn't mind this to be fair; it's quite annoying and was fairly stressful to listen to in the car, stuck in traffic and late for a meeting. But that's not on Anthrax. The guitar parts are really good though, and aren't just overdrive and crunch, with proper melody and clarity. Not the best metal we've had, but an awful long way from the worst.

There are certainly lots of moments of musical acuity — the drummer is nuts — but the riffs mostly left me flat and the songs never elevated me. The trend to double-time got tired.

Great album! Never heard it! Shredded from top to bottom!!

good for the genre

Not really my genre but I like the Stephen king references

Not memorable enough to stick much for me (save maybe for the goofy and glorious Judge Dredd tribute), but still a worthy entry in the 80s thrash canon. This is around the heaviness threshold where I can still enjoy metal.

Generally not a heavy metal fan, but this was quite an enjoyably romp

So this may come as a surprise based on some of these views but I really like thrash. Anthrax are probably my least explored of the "big 4" trash bands, I've heard "Madhouse"+ and "Got The Time" and that was more or less it. While Slayer remain my (current) favourite, I was pleasantly surprised to see this album on the list. For me the true curse of thrash is album inconsistency, which is what made early Metallica so good and Rust in Peace peak thrash. I'll comment on that more at the end but I'd also like to say, I've gone back and forth album to album on the "merit" of music and how intelligent music should be vs music just made to be enjoyed. Thrash is probably up there is 90s alt rock for genres I am most lax with merit wise. While Metallica and Megadeth wrote what I'd consider technically and genuinely really good and interesting music tackling divisive topics like rock should, sometimes Slayer just rocking insane riffs over intense vocals talking about death just scratches the brain right. So this fits into a genre I have just openly praised, but how does it stack up in that genre? If anything this makes me understand acknowledge their place in the aforementioned big four, but it does not shift their place. I think this sounds good, don't get me wrong, but it lacks pieces that all three bands already mentioned have. It's pretty standard pace wise, the solos are good and the vocals are solid but a lot of it would later be outdone dramatically. I will acknowledge, within thrash this album is early haydays, alongside Peace Sells and Reign in Blood and while the latter of those two can be insanely hard to digest... against competition of the time it just comes up lacking. Seriously, Master of Puppets came out the year before that and raised the bar for the genre that was originally set by Ride the Lightening (my favourite Metallica album). I think this album is consistent but it's also consistently solid... it's consistently average. The one song that did take me by surprise was Indians but I do wish more of the album had taken me by surprise. The start of Medley did the same thing, genuinely if it had carried more of that energy on this album I'd give it a lot more credit. Best Songs: Indians, Medley: A.D.I Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 49/60 (below Coat of Many Colors, above First Band on the Moon)

A lot going on here 3 - deserves to be on this list

This is easily going to be my lowest rated thrash album on the list. Anthrax has always been the one band from the Big Four that I just couldn’t get into, no matter how many times I tried. That said, there are still plenty of good riffs and solid vocals throughout the album. You can hear the talent, and I get why people love it, it just never fully clicks for me. Caught In A Mosh and One World are bangers though.

This is cool. Not groundbreaking but cool.

Not as heavy as i was expecting. Enjoyed it but don't think i'll be checking out more of their stuff. Like the bands they influenced though.

Still a good album. Not great, but good.

I do enjoy older metal albums but this didnt quite click with me.

1 = 4 2 = 4 3 = 2 4 = 3 5 = 3 6 = 2 7 = 3 8 = 3 9 = 2

44/1089 2.5000* Scott Ian is a monster on guitar and has killer facial hair, if you're into that. Otherwise, anthrax has never done it for me due to the lack of overtime melody. I understand there is melody but it's generally hidden behind he clamoring of drums. Hits ...indians, among the living

Can’t help but headbang a little

Never heard of album or band but I’ve liked the metal albums on this list so far so high hopes. Opening song is really good. Nodding along the whole way. Drums are crazy. Vocals are eh. Song writing is fine but not a fan of the lead singers voice. Great guitar solo at the end. Caught in a mosh is also good but not as good as among the living. The guitar and drums are so good. I am the law is a classic heavy metal song. Nothing life changing but good song. NFL is my favorite song so far. Pretty catchy. More good guitar and drums. I like skeleton in the closet. Good chorus. Indians is more of the same. Good song not great. Very cool solo. One world is fire. Mosh music. Crazy solo at the end. Intro to ADI is so good. Wanted more of that. Rest of it is meh. With that being said, it doesn’t feel like 7 mins which is a positive. Outro is really cool too. They might’ve save the best for last. I really like imitation of life. Obviously the guitar is great but this one is als very well written. Good not great album as a whole. 2.8 stars.

Thrash metal classic. I'm not really a thrash metal fan, but I do appreciate the influence of this album. Deserved addition to the list, albeit not my "thing."

A pretty good album, I liked Among The Living the most.

I remember when this came out. Not as heavy as most thrash albums. Has a punk vibe to it. It’s decent and Indians is a banger. Production is thin and it is a tad inconsistent. Good but not great.

Listening to this while watching the snow gently fall to the ground and telling myself this is the new Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I don't mind a bit of heavy metal every so often, but I often find that a lot of these artists start to sound the same. Despite their fame, I couldn't really find anything very significant about Anthrax compared to some other bands. It was fine, bur I doubt I'd return to it.

Solid thrash. Not exceptional.

Not as bad as I expected. Not a fan and won't listen again though. Extra point for musicians.

Mucha energía , bueno para hacer deporte podría ser No soy fan

Interesting. Not going to be a replay but as expected. Compared to some of the albums on this list I give this 3 stars. If you like metal you’ll like this.

I always kind of felt like Anthrax was some B tier thrash back in the day, but I'm actually kind of enjoying it now. Who knew!

Well played but definitely not my cup of tea

Musically tedious at times, it's still inventive and lyrically interesting and socially conscious enough to be a good listen. It's becoming clear that I enjoy thrash metal more than mainstream metal. That said, I think the lead singer doesn't quite get there with some of the screams.

Really appreciated the artistry and enjoyed it but it’s not my cup of tea.

First real dive into Anthrax. Seems less polished both in terms of songs/riffs and production than say, Metallica. Especially for a fourth album. For example, the vocals feel like they could be more present in the mix. Still only 1987 tho, so maybe the sound hadn't progressed so far yet.

I vaguely heard a rune

Meh. I'm not really a fan of this style of music. Again it's not bad, but I just don't care for it too much. It's kind of repetitive.

I like it more than other similar albums simply due to it being more punk than anything else. Cool.

Inte så dåligt som jag trodde. Det här har något. Behöver egentligen lyssna mer

iznenađujuće okej metal album?? inače ne podnosim metal, al ovo mi je bilo prolazno, okej. zbog slušljivosti dobit će trojku umjesto dvojke za koju mi realno jest

Although this is harder metal than I usually prefer, Joey’s hair metal voice provided a nice balance for me and I appreciated his Jim Gillette like metal screams on “I Am the Law.”

This is such mid thrash metal, the guitar is so repetitive and the vocals are bland. Anthrax has done better before as well as after. Somehow this record is a hit for them. Wasn't the worst thing to listen to, otherwise I'd rank it lower

Another 3.5. Theres a reason they're #4 of the big 4

A good foray into heavy metal but doesn't particularly blow me away

Caught in a mash is really good. Didn't find the rest that interesting but drums were solid.

I like metal. But the voice of this singer has always put me off. It sounds a lot more like aggressive punk. Not a bad album overall, but I won't revisit it. Also interesting that (for me at least) the loudness of the album was significantly lower than the metal songs that Spotify automatically played after the album ended

Very cool album but songwriting is not as interesting for me as Megadeth or Metallica. Still some great stuff here though

Speed/thrash metal. The double-pedal bass-drum is fun at first but it gets a bit old/over-used after a while. Singing doesn't really grab you like Metallica or Megadeath do. Fine, but not likely what I'll choose when I go to listen to this genre.

Alright thrash metal, good way to pass the time, but also nothing really stood out as a "must relisten to".
