Reviews (page 12 of 14)

it's not my type of songs. gimme shelter and you can't always get what you was its pretty good. but the rest of the album did not clicked to me

Not bad. Had never listened to this album all the way through. I enjoyed it for the most part.

Maybe needs a 2nd listen from me, but I didn't hear anything I thought was exceptional

I think this album was a bit inconsistent. There wer some great tracks, but some average ones as well.

This albums helps solidify that their bluesy rock is one of the easiest rocks for me to get into, creating an atmosphere that I find more appealing than other rock. Sometimes I get into the habit of treating the tracks as background music, but I think it’s because the atmosphere it creates is easy to tune into. Even so, when I pay attention there is enough going on that is interesting and although nothing can top Sympathy for the Devil for me, the songs that are new and the ones that are familiar all are fun and well-constructed. I can’t tell if I like Exile on Main St. more, but the quality has yet to dip. 6.5/10

I know man I know but I just don’t know

The Stones are the single most overrated band. Listened to the album in '21, didn't enjoy it much. Gave it another spin, and it's still the same bland formula that seems to drive everybody wild.

At first glance, this album looks like shit. The artwork is awful.. But after listening to the record... The artwork makes more sense to me. Not because the album is bad. But because it's a random record. Is this a bad thing? It can be.. But not in this case. This album almost feels like it has an identity crisis going on. As if it doesn't know what it wants to be. It comes off as more of a compilation than a cohesive album. Give the talent this band has, I feel that they just wanted to make a record. Write songs that they want to write. Even if one song sounds Dylan-esque, or a honky tonk country jam, then the next incorporates a choir, slide guitar, or a song that is 12 bar blues. And everything on the outside and in between. A compilation of music inspired by many different artists. And I think they pulled it off. It really shows how well they can adapt to different styles. It shows how true they are to their craft and how talented they are. I don't really enjoy Mick Jagger. In fact I do find him to be annoying and/or cringey. I can't help but think of him and Bowie dancing in the street... They must've been on a lot of drugs to green light those ideas. Often times, when I need a laugh, I will find that video without the music, and just the sound effects and have a laugh. Keith Richards is incredible. Even if you don't like his music... He plays in a very unorthodox way. I've heard he often Tune's his guitar to that of a banjo. Not sure if that's true... But you can tell the tuning is not your typical standard tuning. He has a lot of cool ideas and makes acoustic sound intriguing. Even his rock riffs are iconic. Still not my favorite guitarist, and probably a long way from being it but he deserves the respect. The 2 big songs on here, one of my favourites from them: Gimme Shelter, and You Can't Always Get What You Want are staples but the remaining songs on this record deserve more airplay as they are far more interesting to my ear. Perhaps this is caused by the fatigue of repetition of radio play on the former and not the latter. Sufice to say, this album is great. Any rock and roll/classic rock fan would enjoy it. I still can't believe they are still writing....

A couple of heavy hitters on this album but equally there's some filler too, so no real strong feelings either way. Incredible that a band can put together an album like this considering the chaos going on in their camp, though. Commendable.

The production and songwriting are immaculate. This blues rock sound almost never does it for me though. Good to listen to in the moment, but never stays with me. *heard before

Not a big Stones fan. Not bad

It was a very rudimentary

Solid. 3.5.

For me generally not being a Stones fan, this was decent.

Bookended by two of their most iconic songs, this is definitely an important Stones album. Aside from these two songs and the title track, the rest of the album was just okay for me. If I had to choose between what the Beatles were serving in ‘69, and what the Stones were serving, I’d go Beatles hands-down.

I guess decent enough. I always struggle to get into Rolling Stones as they always just sound like a generic classic rock/blues band that doesn't want to sound too passionate or experimental or make any kind of bold music. 5/10

Idk I can’t get into the rolling stones

Hørte det på job så er ikke sikker på hvad jeg synes men der er nogle legendariske numre som gimme shelter og you can’t always get what you want

It starts well from gimme shelter but sounds very much the same afterwards. There's no real progression in the album.

So, I knew ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘Country Honk’, but this was a first time hearing the rest of the album. It was fine, nothing too horrible to skip but nothing I’d ever repeat, well I guess I’d turn ‘Gimme Shelter’ up if it came on the radio but I’d likely change the station if any of these other songs came on. I liked the production, it had a very nice balance and everything kinda hit me in the face - if I listen to more Stones in the future, I look forward to that premium production sound.

lite kul kasnek

Nice and bluesy

Not my favorite Rolling Stones album, but still a fun listen.

Good start. Next few songs were shit, then it picks up at the end

Liked first and last song. Others ok

One of the greatest songs ever recorded open and close the album. The vast middle is solid but just doesn’t measure up to the undeniable power of Gimme Shelter.

Was alright. I liked the upbeat songs a lot more than the slower ones. Basically just worked on CC class, hw, and college apps for the whole weekend.

Gimme Shelter is so incredible.

An exciting beginning; what i'd define as 'classic' rock and roll. The center of the album gets a bit tired, but right before you want to turn it off, when Jagger repeats "monkey man" one too many times, a familiar chorus chimes out a harmony that calms every nerve and sends chills down your spine. "You can't always get what you want, but if you try some times, you'll find, you get what you need." Amen.

3.5/5 - A very good album, I enjoyed all of it

The first and last songs are great. The rest were ok but we're a bit too much blues and almost felt out of place with the start and end

My Grandma's favorite band.

Weirdly good. Goodly weird? You Can’t Always Get What You Want is pretty good, as is Monkey Man.

Never really big into the rolling stones but they had a couple songs that I could listen to regularly

A classic and still is one

The blues rock vibe is honestly pretty fun but I don't think I would ever listen to this again.

the prototypical stones album dare I say it. well executed and punchy blues along with two absolute classics. best tracks: gimme shelter, let it bleed, you cant always get what you want

A solid album with some classics, but generally pretty forgettable for me. I've never been a huge Rolling Stones fan to be fair. Favorite tracks were Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler

Gimme shelter -immediately like the guitar at the beginning -can’t super understand the words, instrumental is a bit loud, but I’m enjoying it nonetheless 7/10 Love in Vain -not a huge fan 3/10 Country hook did not like 2/10 Live with me -dont really like the instrumental -got better at the end 6/10 Let it bleed -funky at the beginning 7/10 Midnight rambler- I like it at the start, chill -lots of layers, not loving it -kinda all over the place 5/10 you got the silver-

Two songs you know well, one country version of another and a bunch of filler. Monkey Man surprised me until the minute plus of howling. Would turn the dial on 4.5 of these 9 tracks...that .5 being the second half of Monkey Man

Not bad, the more country style was not quite to my taste. You can't Always Get What You Want is an Iconic banger though

Oh wow. What an iconic album. I've never heard it from start to finish so this will be a "treat". Get it? cause cake... stupid dad joke. lol looking over the tracks on this album, I only recognize You Can't Always Get What You Want by name. The choir in the beginning of You Can't Always Get What You Want reminds me of Empire of the Sun with Christian Bale, when he was just a boy. Anyways, that was the one and only track on there that I like. I enjoyed the album but still only a 3.

Really good obviously. Opening track is untouchable, I like Country Honk and the final track is a nice send off, but other than that they’re just some solid bluesy tracks to me. Very good of course, but I don’t see myself returning to it often. Favorite tracks: Gimme Shelter, Can’t Always Get What You Want, Midnight Rambler, Country Honk

Didn’t feel as connected to it as “Beggar’s Banquet” but still good.

En sandwich med gourmet bröd och bajs som innehåll, alltså första och sista sången är grym, resten mid

I’m more a hits fan

At there best, The Rolling Stones take the influences of blues and rock n roll, then turn it into a new form of sleazy, punchy rock. However, I find they are pretty hit and miss with it. This album has three songs I actually think are good (the opener, the title track, and the closer). "Love in Vain" and "Country Honk" are dire pastiches of blues and country, which I would happily never hear again. The remaining four tracks are somewhere in the middle. The best bits are really strong, but the weaker tracks really let the album down. 3*

- Was not expecting the country vibes - Gets a little more rocky in the second half - Not bad, need to revisit the other Stones album we had since I listened to it in a rush - Let It Bleed and Monkey Man are great songs - 3.5

- Gimme Shelter more like Gimme more of this it’s so damn good - album is blues with a twang of country

Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want are all time classics. The album overall is almost like an excuse to have those songs in an album. Not the strongest of albums, consistency wise. Title track is a good road song, probably. Midnight rambler is fun. But what do you rate a classic with very weak songs? A three.

Interesting listen with a couple terrible country songs thrown in there

Honestly, I thought Let It Bleed was a pretty decent album for what it was, It had good music, cool musical ideas, okay lyrics, and some pretty good vocals (probably my favorite aspect from the album) I felt that some songs did drag themselves out longer than they should have (I'm looking at you, You Can't Always Get What You Want) but all and all, it was a pretty good album for what it was Best Song: Gimme Shelter Worst Song: Country Honk

Not my usual cup of tea. Couple of solid tracks, probably won’t listen again.

I like it ied

the album was okay. most of the songs were kinda just there. my favorites were “Gimme Shelter,” “Monkey Man,” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” i wouldn’t hate listening to it again but i doubt i will seek it out again apart from those three songs. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Gimme Shelter is hands down one of the best tracks by anyone, ever. It's so powerful, it send chills down my spine. The rest is ..... Mostly just ok. I wonder if that first track is so good that it makes the rest of the record seem like a letdown by comparison. Midnight Rambler is good but drags on too long. The title track is decent, as is the introduction to Monkey Man. I've said it before, the stones lost their magic without Brian Jones, and became some kind of self-mitholising cliche.

I honestly thought we'd had this one before! I had a bit of a bumpy one with this album. Gimme Shelter is a fantastic opener, then a couple of duds, then another good one, rinse & repeat, until a great closer with You Can't Always Get What You Want.

It's not terrible, but I don't really care about it. Gimme Shelter is okay, but it never really clicked with me, and a lot of it was kind of boring. Maybe would've been cool at the time? There's some decent parts, which is the only reason it's getting a low 3 instead of a solid two. Could very easily be a two one day, but I don't want to ignore the fact that I did like some parts and the entire thing wasn't boring, just some of it. I didn't get around to this one for a bit and listened to my albums out of order and I got Exile on Main Street a week after this one, which was worse than this. Bleh. I don't think I like Rolling Stones too much. My favourite song was Gimme Shelter.

Begins with Merry Clayton upstaging Mick Jagger, continues into the Stones’ regular generic rip off blues. I can give it 3 on the immense strength of the first song. They have a few incredible songs, but I question anyone who suggests the old Stones vs Beatles comparison is not a landslide win for the Beatles considering how much more variety and innovation they had on every album.

Some big stone hits but most of it was just okay.

It's fine. As I said in another Rolling Stones album review, I'm meh on this band. They had never worked for me and just feel very middle of the road. Some good hits, but this was just fine. Some good songs but otherwise nothing special. 3.5/5

It truly was a bold decision to start things off with the best song on the album.

Gimme Shelter // Monkey Man // You Can’t Always Get What You Want

Not massive on rock and roll. Cool stereo stuff going on tho

Gimme shelter- their time feel always seems pretty hit or miss for me. Sounds super drunk and sloppy to me. Best part of the song are Merry Clayton’s vocal. Love in vain- pretty boring Sounds like a guitar player trying to play mandolin Country honk- I don’t really like the fiddle sound on here. I like the other version of this song better. The car horns are too on the nose. Live with me - is alright Let it Bleed- I liked this one. Stereo mix is weird though with the cymbals super loud in my left ear. Midnight rambler- tempos don’t feel quite right . Some cool things like when the beat straightens out like how it ends at 4 minutes. But then it keeps going. There was so much better blues rock jamming going on in 1969. Kind of boring. You got the silver- I liked this one. Maybe my favorite song on the album. Monkey man- not a good song. Didn’t like the vocals or guitars. For a band with two guitars the parts and tones don’t seem to be worked out enough. Can’t always get what you want. I always thought choral arrangement intro is pretty cheesy. Rest of the song is cool. keyboards and background vocals are my favorite part. I like the big full arrangement with the choir is cool at the end. And percussion is cool. Overall kind of disappointing for a classic album from one of the biggest band of 60’s and 70’s. I was expecting some stronger songwriting, better performances, and a better sounding record. Wanted to like this one more than I did. Came back to it and appreciated it a bit more. Maybe it’s an acquired taste. Maybe I just have to be in the mood. Idk never been a big stones fan.

I wish this was recorded better.

Great weave of American Folk and Classic Rock

Gimme Shelter, one of my favourite Stones tracks. Very blues orientated compared to some of their earlier stuff, works for me, sticking to a tried and tested style I guess. The album version of Honky-tonk women done in a playful country style was a surprise. Let it Bleed, Midnight Rambler, Monkey Man and finally You Can't Always Get What You Want - all excellent songs. If out of 10 it would be a 7.5. So it gets a high 3. Weakest track - Love In Vain

It’s like a mediocre sandwich with the most amazing French bread.

Highlights: "Gimme Shelter," "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Monkey Man," "Midnight Rambler" It cannot be unheard that somewhere during the recording of "Gimme Shelter," the guys decided 'hey, you know what would give this song about the slums some authenticity??? Somebody get us a black woman!' And so they dragged a pregnant Merry Clayton out of bed in the middle of the night, and she handed them their greatest hit by putting her talent to their appropriative bullshit. Only a few tracks measure up to the hits. Some interesting, restrained use of effects -- is that ring modulation on "Midnight Rambler"? -- and the minstrel gimmickry isn't as egregious as on Sticky Fingers, but it still runs on blues and country homage, and although their lyricism tends to be fairly strong it's much sloppier and free-associative for most of this album, sometimes beyond the Captain Beefheart parody. Not sure I'm ever going to hear the Stones album that makes me understand their critical acclaim. Guess you had to be there, hard-wired with the same assumptions and delusions that made this music.

Very similar to Beggars Banquet but maybe less nice because all their friends are junkies. Of course, intro and outro deserve 5 stars but in the middle only country blues. You can't always get 5 stars but if you try sometimes. Well, you might find 4 stars in my old system but again 3 stars.

God, what horrific accident of 1001 albums gave me two Rolling Stones albums in a row? Just trying to get through this and Aftermath singlehandedly killed my drive to keep going with the albums. It was rough! I am biased against the Rolling Stones almost eternally, something about them just feels empty to me. My brain needs good melody, good songs, interesting production, something to latch onto. Aftermath had so little of that, for all of its praise. But I loved Sticky Fingers, and I grew to really cherish the boisterous, happy-go-lucky, crazed party attitude of Exile on Main Street. This is just getting to the part of the Stones that I like. The songs that just have that frenetic crazed energy with the rhythm parts– Monkey Man, Gimme Shelter. That has that same feeling in the guitar where you just want to jump up and do stuff, that kind of urgency and fun. I love it. A lot of this album is a bit boring and somewhat sleepy compared to the lightning in a bottle you get in the beginning and the last few tracks. So it's not a great, complete album. But it points to somewhere really good for the Stones, and those couple of tracks make the listen worth it. 3/5

Not a huge Stones fan, but what an opening track. The closer was a good ‘un too. All the rest were okay I guess.

classic

Gimme Shelter is a great song - probably my favorite Stones song. Other than that, it just doesn't do anything for me. You Can't Always Get What You Want just annoys me.

Much more country than I'd expected. The familiar tracks seemed to be the best

this album is making me feel like im going insane. First and last tracks are incredible listen to them but the middle is so bad!!! If it wasn't for the amazing 2 this would get 1 stars

Eh, the best songs on the album were definitely the two singles. The rest sounded too much like they were borrowing someone else's sound (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc). I didn't hate it though

Par for the course Rolling Stones: Some of the songs are good (the real standouts are Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want), but there is too much white-men-playing-THE-BLUES(tm) noodling. The arrangements and especially recording quality leave a lot to be desired. George Martin did it better with the Beatles years before. 2.5/5

It verges on embarrassing to say so, as a would-be rock guitarist, but I’ve never really listened to the Stones. It’s hard to pinpoint why, but in the end I guess it boils down to “they don’t grab me”. And while I was surprised (in a good way) at how country-blues-rootsy this album sounded, overall it’s still true.

The blues influence stands out. Songs feel tight. Besides the hits bookending the album - not much standing out on first listen, just kind of vibing, no particular melodies and lyrics jumping out - not that that is a bad thing - the album is flowing like a river wide and slow.

Per niente quello che mi aspettavo, carino.

relisten?

One of the more consistent Stones albums. Includes some of their best - notably Monkey Man, which I have always loved. It's the sleazy Stones doing what they do (did?) best. But the novelty of the country feel of this wears thin after a while. Any album that can open with Shelter and end with Can't Always Get has t be pretty good, but the middle is patchy.

Finger picky music. This surprised me. I was expecting an album of rallying calls after opening with Gimme Shelter. It sounds like sessions or even outtake's. There's a great sax sound on Live With Me. Midnight Rambler doesn't half drag on, mind.

Pretty good, brief Rolling Stones record. Bookended by two of their best songs does make a lot of the tracklist pale in comparison a bit, but still nice country rock all the way through (Monkey Man is a cool song too). 3.5/5

Rock n roll blues country

its a shit sandwich. tasty bready first and last tracks encasing a turd centre.

I'm hearing more Rolling Stones through this than previously in my life. This is the 2nd best of the two Stones' albums so far.

Solid classic

Solid hits with Gimme Shelter and you can’t always get what you want. Should do a relisten and lyric watch.

My Stones criticism continues... it's OK but too much filler. The Beatles would never...

Best Stones album we've had so far, I think, but still manages to lose its way. Opener and closer are fantastic, but most of the time it really suffers when they slow the tempo down. To do slow songs, with a voice like Jagger's, everything else needs to be on point. For most of this album, it isn't. Other than the first and the last songs, Live With Me is the only one that really gets the pulse going. 3/5.

Pretty good album. Lots of folky type songs, took me by surprise.

Yea it's alright

Never really got it. Not for me.

Gimme Shelter is great. After that, I expected to be blown away and wasn't. I'll have to try again another time

This is the first time I've heard this whole record. Starts out great, and ends great, but the middle goes into some country blues that I'm not a fan of.

Unusual so far in that I was looking forward to the songs I knew, didn't get a huge amount else out of it if I'm honest

Decent, just not something I'd be mad about

2 classics, the rest is filler

Enjoyed

only know you love her when you let her go (les notes a virgule)

nooit volledig meegeweest met de hype

Ooh ook tof

It's a nice album, but it's definitely a contrast between the two big hits, and the rest of the album that meanders along.

This has some good songs on it - Midnight Rambler for example. Others are average. But a prolific band like The Stones you'd expect that - there's a reason their Best of Albums sell best.

The two really popular songs off this album are the best ones.

You Can't Always Get What You Want is amazing, but the rest are just okay.

Heard it before?: Yes, it’s one of my faves from the stones Enjoy it?: Yes, I’ve loved this one of theirs for a while, it’s perfectly timed and has a superb run of tracks with good pacing and range from one track to another Favourite song: Track 1 - Gimme Shelter

Prima album, Rolling Stones zijn alleen nooit echt mijn ding. Paar goede nummers op het album, maar verder beetje eentonig.

5/10 - didn't finish and I don't like the rolling stones

Great album . 3/5 its the note

A little bit less polished than the later Stones albums. The first and last song are overplayed greats "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" The rest is bluesy honkey tonky. Heavy country vibes

two monster songs. the rest of the album is just ok

High 3 for me. Enjoyed it. Deffo want to go back to The Rolling Stones when my music rotation is not as Christmas heavy. One listen isn’t really a fair reflection and there’s multiple albums on here that would have benefitted from more than one listen to be fair.

I feel the exact same as Ben. Christmas and one listen has maybe made this a little harsh. Fantastic bookend songs again from this album

I was kind of bummed it was another Rolling Stones album to be honest. It was fine, but I got very bored about halfway through & tuned out a bit.

Just three songs in and it feels like this album is three different genres. A So far, it's going down exponentially in how much I like it. Guess Gimmie Shelter is a tough one to follow though. Listened through the rest and it suffers from having such dated delivery of lyrics. The kind where a man is kinda just sing talking them in a poorly controlled way.

Pretty good. Had never given much time to the rolling stones before this, but I enjoyed listening to this. Especially the grimy lyrics.

An OK bluesy album, that's probably a representative of the Stones at their peak. Yet, even at their peak, they could only produce an album that would have been nothing without its opening and closing tracks.

16/11/2022

Opens with "Gimme Shelter", so immediately we have a case of blowing your load way too soon, as no song could ever hold a candle to that one. Easily the best song on the album and probably the entire Stones discography. The Stones then decide that making weird faux-country bullshit would be more commercially successful in the US, so their manager got Mick Jagger, well known for never stepping foot in a 30 meter radius of a cow, to put on a cowboy hat and pretends he's a yeehaw gunslinger rootin-tootin' American or something. My source for the previous paragraph is that I made everything up. I don't know jack shit about this band. I didn't even know Jagger was the vocalist until today. Thought he played bass. Three out of five.

The album is mostly a standard Stones album but it bookended by greatness.

The the two standout tracks book-end this album. Would have made a terrific 7".

Half good.

Great finish but lotta meh

It tells you something that the best songs are the first one and the last one. Everything in between is decent rock but nothing particularly memorable.

The album is alright, I definitely prefer the faster/more upbeat songs compared to their slower songs. Their voice doesn't really catch me for slower songs. Songs like "Gimme Shelter" and the faster part of "Midnight Rambler" is what I enjoy versus the slower style of "Country Tonk" or "Live With Me". Also you can tell this album is from the 60's from its excessive use of having sounds in only one ear. Favorite song: Gimmie Shelter Worst song: Country Tonk

Not the Stones’ best, but there’s some good stuff on here. Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want are classics. Unfortunately, more blues/country trakcs are unfortunately accompanied with really obnoxious vocals. The lyrics really just often come across as either trite of skeevy on many of these. I really only like harmonica in very small and tasteful doses, and many of these songs have it in overdoes. Overall, this is definitely a mixed record, though the highs are quite high. Top Tracks - Gimme Shelter – Classic anti-war song. - Let it Bleed – Jagger being a gross human being aside, this is a good sex song. - You Can’t Always Get What You Want – A great album closer.

When they are white guys, this is one of the better one. But there is still a lot of the Rolling Stones paying at being black guys and its quite inauthentic.

- First listen - Unbelievably good opening and closing tracks - Few more forgettable ones as well - Most of the middle tracks not really my thing Fav songs: You Can't Always Get What You Want, Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed

Un álbum normalito de Los Rolling. No son de mis favopritos así que.....

Love love love Gimme Shelter, the rest of the album is exactly why is dislike the Stones however, definition of taking original songs and sanitising them for the mainstream.

Un buen disco, de hecho contiene dos temas, el primero y el último, que siempre fueron parte de sus shows hasta el día de hoy.

I think three is fair. The opener and the clothes are on this are absolute classics. Everything in between is probably the most honky tonk blues I've seen the Stones go. It was an interesting listen but not repeatable.

listen

Once again, nice to hear a whole album from such a well known band/artist. Some slightly different musical styles but in the whole a good ok RS collection.

End of 60s album. One of the crowning Rolling Stones achievements and fitting for the era of liberation. Definitely most recognized for gimme shelter, often used as a war time (Vietnam war), chaos induced track, but the overall feeling of the album is positive, upbeat and reassuring.

Ein Stones-Album, das mit Gimme Shelter anfängt und mit You Can’t Always Get What You Want endet. Dazwischen ganz ok.

Country & Western by a British band that are incredibly talented. It's something different and fun. Is it the best of that genre? No. Does it expand rock? Yes!

Started off great then kinda died down

Great singles, less great everything else

I don’t know why I didn’t add notes, but a lot of bangers I recognized. Solid 3.

Takes me to a country barn. Stunning and shocking lyrics. Goes from immature sex jokes, to deep meaningful ballad from track to track.

An overall good album, with some bangers and some meh songs. Nice mix of blues rock and americana/country, but tRS are clearly better and the former. Best tracks: Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler Worst tracks: Country Honk and Love in Vain Interesting that Country Honk is so bad when Honk Tonk Woman (not in this album) is so good.

geniales

Some classic songs, some oddities (Country Honk) and some boring bits. Gimme Shelter is the highlight of the record for me. Not a big Stones fan, more of a Beatles Person, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. It is what it is.

It is usually the Stones singles that hit the mark for me, in this case Let It Bleed has a few of those. Unfortunately like all Stones Albums half of what you get is bluesy harmonica laden filler. Great for some but it brings down the quality songs on here

First time I actually listened to a Rolling Stones album in my life and honestly a little better than I expected

Not my favorite Stones album.

I saw Love in Vain on the tracklist and prayed to the gods above that it was not yet another shitty Robert Johnson cover (see Eric Clapton's cover of They Are Red Hot if you want another example), but of course I was disappointed. Leave the man to his eternal sleep and stop robbing his grave for christssakes. Overall, I would describe this album as a fairly forgettable collection of blues rock songs that are bookended by the stellar songs Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want. It's sort of a pain in the ass that I have to get through the entire album to hear the only two songs that I care about, but that's the way it goes sometimes 3/5

I lost my review for this one! I’ve always wanted to listen to this album, admittedly, because I like the front cover. “Gimme Shelter” is one of my favorite songs of all time — I kinda wish the rest of the album sounded like this. I’m not a huge Stones fan, so I thought listening to this album would help me understand their appeal. I liked a few songs but apart from “Gimme Shelter” and the classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” I only liked some songs, didn’t love. I understand that the appeal of this record (and of the band in general) is the fusion of different styles of music, such as gospel, blues, and country. I think I’m struck by this feeling that I’d rather go to other bands for blues — the Stones have a great sound, but I often feel like I’m being dragged along by the songs that seem to go on for too long. I’ll have to relisten to these songs and confront what I like and don’t like about them. For now, I will give this album a 3.

Still listening, will come back to write the review

Don't member

not my style but still a good listen. opener was fantastic but the rest were a bit similar i suppose.

Dident listen to full thing. Bit hillbily

dont usually like blues rock, but its the rolling stones so it was ok

The most overrated band in the universe.

Opening and closing songs are obviously amazing but the middle feels very standard fare Stones. I would always just choose to listen to Sticky Fingers instead

Gimme Shelter is great. While the rest of the album probably does have some merit as an exercise in blues, it doesn't really appeal beyond the opening track. Gimme Shelter is worth 5 on its own. In the context of the album, I'm gonna have to drop that a touch.

good album, country, last song is the best

I really wanted to like this more than I did. It’s bookended by absolute stellar songs, but the middle is forgettable blues rock. Not bad, by any means, but not great either. Just ho-hum for me.

Realmente me aburren los rolling stone. Tiene temas buenos, pero fuera del hit no los destaco demasiado. Lo siento como rock para Yankees hecho por ingleses.

Always had them down as a great singles band, this reaffirms that thought.

Hell yeah I love The Departed

British guys doing blues and twang, huh?

heilt ok huske ikkje nåke av da idag så satte ikkje djupe spor

Får rock band-abstinensa av Gimme shelter

Oh GOD I remember listening to this album when Cav and I first moved into our flat, happy memories of bopping to Gimme Shelter in our brand new kitchen With that said, apart from the first and last songs, the rest is just...eh. I knew I'd listened to this full album before, and coming back to it, all I could remember was "when the traaaaaaaaaaaain left the staaaaaaaatioooooooon" I really like the instrumental on Monkey Man though

This album is like a sandwich with two of the Stones' best songs as bread and a load of filler in between. Great tracks, just a meh sandwich overall. Definitely my favourite stones album so far tho.

It was fine

It's pretty good. The opener and closer are classics. In between there's some solid tunes and then stuff I don't like much like Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler. You Can't Always Get What You Want should be at least 2 minutes shorter. It's solid enough I guess. It's not unpleasant but I'd rather listen to some of their other albums.

Standard stuff here from the Stones

Better than I expected

All downhill after the opener

3.5/5. Great bookend songs

Couple of bangers for bookends, nothing striking in-between. Album goes from 100 to 0 pretty quick moving into track 2. I had to double check to make sure I wasn’t on shuffle.

Rolling Stones. Classic. Not all great songs but some very memorable ones.

First and last track are awesome kinda meaders in the middle with american blues from a decade prior and adds nothing.

Starts and ends in amazing songs, the 7 songs in between are mostly filler in comparison. Given its reputation it's a bit disappointing. When The Rolling Stones try to be The Rolling Stones they're incredible, not so much when they try to be from 1940's Mississippi.

2/21/22

Some great songs but a fairly standard blues album tbh. Typical stones

Stones are markedly better than I'd always thought.

As with every Stones album (even those from the 'classic' period) "Let It Bleed" is almost wilfully uneven. The stand out tracks are sublime - the greatest ever intro kicks the album off into "Gimme Shelter". But then you get a sorry mish mash of faux country and tossed off blues, plus uninspired 'rawk' until you get to "Midnight Rambler" which, whilst overlong, as least has some oomph about it. And you cap it all off (after the dire "You Got The Silver") with the closing brilliance of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" preceded by the mighty, magical "Monkey Man". So how does one rate a great pile of uninspired, insipid doodling interjected by three of the greatest tunes the Stones ever made? With caution, I'd say - and with a finger at the ready to skip the rest to get to the very best.

3/5 good by not quite enough

Rock by the stones. Not very special to me, only a few songs stand out. Overall sounds ok. Btw ...... i have no versions of songs done by others that i like better...

I was never a big fan of Mick Jagger's voice, but there are some great rock tunes on here.

Genre: Blues Rock 3/5 Another album on this list where the singles certainly outweigh the remainder of the content here. Gimme Shelter, a song that still receives airtime all year round, is one of the best in the entire Rolling Stones’ catalogue, and will continue to stand the test of time. However, a bit of sag towards the end, and the disappointment that is You Can’t Always Get What You Want, which is dragged out to near 8-minutes on the album, brought the experience down for me. Country Honk is good, Live with Me is outstanding, Side B is certainly the weakest link here. Overall, decent album, though.

Not bad. Worth another listen.

all round great stones album

January 19th 2022. The best of this album IMO: - Love In Vain - Let It Bleed I know they're a classic but I'm unfortunately not familiar with The Rolling Stones. This was pleasant. Ça s'écoute très bien. Didn't expect country music. Great energy. 3.4/5

Classic

Bon album, son classique qu'on connait des Rolling Stone. S'écoute bien du début à la fin, mais rien d'extravagant.

Very much honky tonk

Yet another album from 1969. Although this was a transition album from Jones to Taylor, it just sounds like the Stones to me. Which is fine, of course Gimme Shelter, Country Honk, and You Can't Always Get What You Want, and to a lesser extent the eponymous Let It Bleed, are solid rock tunes and part of rock cannon. But none of the songs are a revelation. Honestly the whole album seems a little restrained, from the bpm point of view. Solid, certainly listenable, very bluesy, much more honky tonk then pop.

Pretty standard fare from the Stones. Gimme Shelter an obvious classic and there are some pretty nice country flourishes throughout the album but the rock and roll formula is constant.

In 2021 it can be said that the music brought by the British Invasion has become rather ubiquitous. Inevitable comparisons to the rock & roll rivalries of the 60s are made on "Let It Bleed" but make no mistake, these are The Rolling Stones. Tracks like "Gimme Shelter" the song has transcended into pop culture lexicon, where nearly everyone will hear that song either in advertisements, soundtracks, etc... Overall the album demonstrates TRS's growth as a band, adding more and more funk to their sound, as well as embracing America's jazz influences. "Monkey Man" reaffirms the eccentricity of Mick Jagger, and then finally, the other song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" that everyone will have heard some variation of unless they live in a box.

Hit or miss - the title track is stellar and ageless, but I don’t like the bluesy stuff as much. And the country could have been avoided all together.

Pretty decent. I know some Stones songs but not a whole lot. The album was more bluesy than I was expecting

Starts with Shelter and ends with Get What You Want which are both magnificent. Unfortunately it makes the rest of the album weak in comparison.

One major hit right at the beginning with decently strong supporting songs to follow. Just solid throughout.

More honkeytonkey than I would've expected, not very revolutionary, but pretty good nontheless. 3/5 "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is very good.

Rolling Stones usually have one bi hit on each album but it seems they managed to find 2 on this one. I feel like the relentless churning out of albums, one a year or more led to this pattern and meant there was a lot of filler a lot of the time

Starts strongly - I think Gimme Shelter is probably the Stones' best track. Then it goes kinda country for quite a while before Monkey Man ushers in a strong ending. I enjoyed it, but not sure what sets it apart as an all-time classic. Maybe the album art? 3.5

Great start and finish. Weaker filler songs.

Fine, couple of classics but not mind blowing

Like all Rolling Stones albums - A fine Rolling Stones album

You definitely know it's the Rolling Stones when you're listening, and you never forget it. What else can be said, you know? When it comes to all the monster huge bands of the 60s and 70s, I've always liked basically every other band more than the Stones. They're totally fine, and this is one of the most middle of the road albums of theirs I've ever heard.

Solid outing, but more repetitive than other albums and I don't connect with the songs as much other than Gimme Shelter

The Rolling Stones' eighth UK & tenth US album continued their return to a more "blues-based" rock music and winded up going double platinum. The album's songs were described as heavy, haunting, and erotic. The most popular songs were "Gimme Shelter" & "You Can't Always Get What You Want," which I liked the most as well. In a way, this album was able to musically capture and project the sense of dread that the world was experiencing at the time. This album still stands out today as one of The Rolling Stones best.

I've never had a particularly strong opinion about the Rolling Stones. For the most part, their classic radio hits are songs that I enjoy, but they've never driven me to check out their back catalog. I don't know how this album compares to their others (and still need to go back to review Exile on Main Street), but Let It Bleed felt quite bluesy throughout. In the past, that may have led me to give it a higher ranking because I enjoy the blues sound. But in 2021 it's hard not to read it as gross appropriation that is not done as well as the originators of the style. The lead track, Gimme Shelter, is a great song that starts out the album strong, but it arguably continues to decline from there until the album itself reminds us that we can't always get what we want, even if all we want is a consistently solid album. As the goose says, country honque.

I firmly believe that this record has no place on the list of 1001 albums anyone needs to listen to. If you are of a mind to be a part of this project, you have heard every track that is worth listening to from this record dozens of times and the rest are are forgettable filler. This was also true of the last Rolling Stones album we had to review and I am fairly confident it will be the case for the other dozen I am afraid are going to come up over the next three years. Christ all mighty, please space out the rest better.

Classic rolling stones. Gimme Shelter the star.

For a band on their 10th album in 6 years, this is a solid effort with at least 3 classics tunes. Not every song works, sometimes it sounds like they're just jamming and making stuff up on the spot, but overall still a solid effort.

The Rolling Stones are annoying, because they have a lot of individual songs that I think are amazing, but I dont really like any of their albums that much. I find that their albums tend to have a lot of filler, and not very good flow. This one is no different. Its bookended by amazing tracks, but I dont really like most of the tracks in between.

A classic, I have it on vinyl. More bluesy/country than other albums (violin/piano). Quite a mix of serious and goofy songs. Rating 3 since it's mostly carried by two songs.

Not a huge Stones fan, but Gimme Shelter is amazing... At least until Mick starts to sing.

I was looking forward to this then just a bit disappointed.

Decent album, I am a fan of can't always get what you want, I think I'm not much of a Rolling Stones fan in general though, it turns out

okeinnn

Look, Gimme Shelter is an excellent song, as are some others on this album (Live with me, You can't always...). However, some are just ok and some are actually shit (looking at you, Country Honk). So ultimately, I'd rather pick out the songs I like and not listen to the whole album. 3.5 stars really.

Not for me

Arrogant music.

pretty cool, not at all what i expected

A couple good songs, not my fave

Cool, and different. Some famous songs on there so cool to hear the other tracks.

Josh, bin jetzt nicht der große Fan der Stones, aber irgendwo sind die schon okay. Hier sind keine großen Hits drauf, aber mit Gimme shelter ein Stück, dass gerne und gut gecovert wurde!

Heard this before. I like it.

It's alright, although I do not like it that much. It's got too much Rock for me.

- great slide guitar & harmonica - nice delta blues type sound that I never imagined the Rolling Stones to sound like - ashamed I’ve never heard these before

Giving the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones a 2.5 average feels wrong, but I didn't like this as much as I thought I would. Might be a little too country for me, but it was still a good listen Saved: Gimme Shelter, You Got The Silver

Ken weinig van the rolling stones, maar dit was best een leuk album

De nummers die ik nog niet kende vond ik niet zo spannend. Wel een leuke mondharmonica.

Better.

He escuchado muy muy poco de The Rolling Stones y aun así no me esperaba tanto folk aquí. Canción favorita: Midnight Rambler por los cambios de moods escalonados y por veces repentinos. Mood: bailando rock en la granja con sueños de la fama urbana

More ñee than I expected. Too much boring rock and roll harmonies

Good stuff but nothing that really struck me besides the hits.

Not my favorite stones album, but it made for an interesting day of rock

I hate to say it, but the Stones are slowly growing on me. 3 stars.

Much more bluesy than I was anticipating. Interesting instrumentation throughout. Gimmie Shelter may be my favorite Stones song of all time.

We're so poor omg

A decent fusion of blues, country, and rock - I do think 'Gimme Shelter' promises a wholly different album than the one that follows, but the following tracks are enjoyable for the most part.

Not a huge fan of the stones but this wasn't bad.

Good album. Great? meh. 3 stars. While it contains some of their classics, Rolling Stones is pretty "cookie cutter."

Was ok, some decent songs however the stones are not really my thing

Gimme gimme gimme those honky tonk bluuuues

First and last songs rule

It’s good but for certain moods for me

More honky tonk than I would have thought. Some interesting stuff but not my cup of tea.

Klassisker, rock, lidt blues/gospel-vibes

1969. Key Songs: Gimme Shelter, Live With Me

Gimme shelter..

Phenomenal opening song. Classic if a bit overrated closer. Surprisingly bad in the middle.

My body is a machine that turns Rolling Stones albums into 2-star ratings. While I wouldn't say that it's meritless to listen several albums by one of the most influential bands of all time, the generator has shown me that I straight up do not like them. I will always respect their unintentional consistency in putting out one godly song per album though; the closer on this one is a genuinely incredible song that does not sound like *anything* that comes before it. Standouts: Gimme Shelter (the twisty percussion part) • You Can't Always Get What You Want

2/5 Favorite Song: You Can't Always Get What You Want

I liked Exile on Main Street better. I played this twice and genuinely can’t remember anything about the album other then the first song being decent.

It's British people imitating American music, almost to the point of parody. Could you not? If you can't do blues with some respect for the source then don't do it. Also, no one should do honky tonk. Period. As others have pointed out, the album has two fantastic songs (front and back) and a bunch of...other stuff in between. I think I like the Stones in much smaller doses than a full album. One track makes me grimace and the next is fine. I suppose in that regard it's much like the last band, who y'all were calling a Stones knock off (Flamin' Groovies). So, same rating. They are equally 'nah but thx' for me.

it sounded better than the other Rolling Stones albums I heard, so 2.9?

All different songs. Some classic songs but didn't excite me that much.

Manje liči na Ocean Colour Scene pa mi se manje sviđa logično. Nisu mi ni hitovi nešto legli. A ove lošije pjesme pogotovo.

Amazing opener, amazing closer, pretty disappointing inbetween.

I’m just not a Stones fan. I don’t get the appeal. Except for Gimme Shelter which is fantastic and, thankfully for me, is on this album. This dragged up my ranking by one whole star

One star each for Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want. The rest is the very definition of filler. The Stones as an album band remain totally overrated in my book and this is no exception.

Rollarit ny on Rollarit 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t get the Stones appeal… it’s just drunk British guys trying to play the blues. Gimme Shelter is a banger though

Confession. Im not a Mick Jagger fan. His voice just doesn't sit well with me. For this album Id say overall it felt a tad messy? Favorite song: Love In Vain

Exactly what I've come to expect of the Stones... a couple of killer singles floating in a vat of greasy filler...

No olipahan löysää munaa.

God I hate the Stones and this is just another reason why. They don’t even seem to take themselves seriously. Other than the opening track which may be the only song by them that is worth a shit this is a thoroughly regrettable string of drool from baby’s chin.

Not my cup of tea.

More drunken white-boy-blues ramblings bookended by two bona fide classics.

A lot more folksy than I’m used to for them.

Two great tracks acting as bookends on some instantly forgettable filler that serves no purpose other than to waste away the time between the two tracks worth listening to. Even though I did very much enjoy the two good tracks, and an album of material that was all of this quality would easily get five stars, the rest of the album was a chore to get through, so two stars feels fair.

It was okay, nothing really blew my mind, some good tracks, others not so much, not really for me.

Aburridooo me voy

I didn’t like it. It was not my cup of tea.

I'm wondering The Rolling Stones get so many comparisons to The Beatles. As someone who knows the latter but not the former, I expected something at least similar in sound to an early Beatles record. No, what I got was blues rock and typical early country. I am unfortunately not a fan. It's not just that my expectations weren't met, it's also that I am not a fan of this genre in the first place. I don't like the styling of the songs, I don't like Mick Jagger's voice...it's not necessarily anything reprehensible, and I understand its inclusion on the list, but this is just so totally not my thing. Sorry y'all.

only one good song ngl

Hot take - the debate shouldn’t be Stones vs. Beatles, it should be Kinks vs. Beatles. The Stones are nowhere close. Gimme Shelter is the only thing keeping this album from being one star.

Very type of music I would put if I owned a vintage shop. Not my general cup of tea music, but enjoyed my time with it. Songs I liked: Live With Me, Let It Bleed, You Can't Always Get What You Want.
