# Playlist track - Tighten Up # Notes - Great mix of rock and blues. Catchy riffs. - A bit too long at 1h 17min.
They get extra points for being so explicit with the album name, making it so very clear which is the band and which is the album title. And I really enjoyed the music. Not sure I believe the sentiment at all times but very nice to listen to.
Classic
I don't think I had listened to The Black Keys before. I enjoyed this.
Don't like the bits where it sounded like they had covered the mics in greaseproof paper. But other than that not bad at all. Would I buy it possibly so if it was to do something like make up a 3 for offer. Got to be a 4 then.
This is really solid. Not perfect, but definitely very good. Saved a bunch off this. 4/5
The Black Keys make some good music. It’s not the best, but definitely not the worst. There’s a good mix of soul and blues and some old classic rock that makes it hard to pinpoint what era this belongs to at some points. There are a couple solid tracks that help to keep the rest afloat. I’ll definitely listen to them again, but their not going to be my go-to group.
A nice, easy listen for a Monday morning. Can't stop thinking about the review that said this was made for a FIFA video game soundtrack. I'm still laughing. That's so accurate.
I love this album. If you were looking for the heads, they’re not here. If you’re looking for the songs that gave the sound that led to the hits, this is the perfect spot for you. It’s a perfect mix of the blues in its true form, combined with the power of the keyboards. Honestly, honestly, it makes me happy to listen to.
Different I really liked this whole album
Great album, probably one of the best rock albums from the 10s.
Highly enjoyed
Prefer their older albums, but this one still rocks.
I enjoyed revisiting this after not listening to it in many years.
Good
The last solid album that the Keys put out. There are some absolute gems (Everlasting Light, Tighten Up) that still shined the creativity and song-writing prowess of Dan Auerbach before El Camino and the commercialization of the band fully took hold.
Peak white people music. very consistent sound throughout which I appreciate. good album for driving in america.
First band among this thousand albums that was new to me that I liked. This is good - nice sounds.
i'm a bit torn about this one. i used to be very into the black keys about a decade ago and this was my absolute favorite by them. nowadays i am not a huge fan of their music, so at this point in time, i don't really feel like giving them a score of what i probably would have a decade ago. overall, i still think this is a good album. i don't think it's anything mindblowing and i think a lot of their contemporaries make music that i think feels more genuine and sounds better. the album still has a bunch of bops on it - and i can't get tired of 'tighten up' and their cover of jerry butler's 'never give you up' - what i think are highlights of the album.. the production on this one feels a little stale but when they are loose, i think this album can borderline rip. the musicianship on this one is pretty good and i think the songwriting is solid. to me it sounds very early '10s commercial now, which i didn't at the time (but this sound has been co-opted by truck commercials for years). i think at the time it felt a little more novel than it does today. honestly, i still have a little bit of a soft spot for it.
I used to listen to this album a lot. It still is pretty good, relatively one-note but in a way where they nailed what they are going for with a few standout tracks. Reminds me of other alt-pop-rock-ish stuff.
10 out 10
The bass and drums sound so clean and clear in the headphones. Black Mud is great. I really liked the stretch from Black Mud -> Ten Cent Pistol. Never was a huge fan of The Black Keys hits, but there is a lot more depth to this album than I would have expected.
I forgot how many songs on this album I already knew. I guess I have listened to it more than I remember. The Black Keys play an awesome style of rock which I wish I got into more in the early 2010s. This album is a mix of straight up rock, blues, and some slower pop like songs. Tighten Up is awesome with unmistakable intro to it. I hope there's more Black Keys coming up
Great album front loaded with jams. It starts to tail off at the end for me. Still good but in no way stacks up to the front half. High af 4
Very nice album with a splendid cover.
Iconic album, slaps, cool, good, 3.6
I really enjoyed this album, I think I’d like to listen to more of their stuff. All 4 of these stars are for the track ‘I’m not the one ’ and its use in the series the leftovers. The track plays to plastic dolls being made and sold, one lucky baby to be swaddled as baby Jesus and placed in a nativity scene. The baby is stolen - I’m not the one x
I think I've only listened to a few Black Keys tracks here and there, but I really enjoyed delving into a full album. I've listened to "I'm not the one" a bunch of times on one of the The Leftovers playlists. I'd listen to this album again
I was already familiar with the Black Keys but not this album before listening. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's rock with blues and psych influences. I can see myself coming back to this one.
If the ultimate measure of an album is how many whiskey commercials it’s featured in, this would be the GOAT. While obviously the most successful Black Keys album, I’ve never thought it was the best but maybe that’s just me trying to go against the grain. Hit after hit for the first 6 or 7 songs and while it goes a little long it’s pretty solid all the way through.
4.3 You know that bands that you loved and then they got popular and then you stopped liking them. Thats the black keys for me, but I never knew of them before they got popular. I just never got into them because they blew up. This album bangs though.
Completely front loaded. But the highs are very high. Everything after Sinister Kid is a skip
Was fortunate enough to see these dudes at a rad venue on a three-concerts-in-three-nights run back in 2011. It was really really cool. This album brought me right back The other shows, I think, were Death Cab and the Gaslight Anthem. That was a killer week. I feel like I have been tired ever since. Very good album.
I love this album. This is the album that I really discovered them from and what gravitated me towards their vibes and rock n roll style.
I am already a fan of the Black Keys. There recipe is pretty straight forward: deep drum grooves with a solid guitar melody and back up, then a strong lead vocal and throw fuzz on everything. It's all good stuff though. It's not dense where you really have to think about it. They are just providing solid song writing and arranging that you can have going in the back ground. Not top shelf for me but for sure will be back to have another listen. 4/5
Decent, bluesy, gritty rock. Distortion and basic guitar drive things forward. I enjoyed this, but there are better blues-rock artists out there.
I didn’t manage to listen to all of it but it’s a good album
Very nice 4.1
Really enjoyed "Too Afraid To Love", beat reminds me of a Wu-Tang song. All the songs seem to blend together. Definitely feels very pretentious. It's good for sure, but just seems to full of itself. Enjoyable really a 3.5 stars for me

Seen in the second review topping this section: "This album is basically Blues for people who are afraid of black people." A black friend of mine loves this album and he is the one who made me like it a lot, through repeated listens. People can be so dense when it comes to that sort of issue sometimes. 🙄 Personal, subjective grade following the purposes of this list: 3.5/5, rounded up to 4. More "objective" grade: 8.5/10 (5+3.5) Number of albums left to review: 248 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 327 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 192 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many other records are more important to me): 241
Hatte die Platte als Ganzes nie auf dem Schirm, fand es mega nice! Super vibe am Montag morgen! 4,5
Oh man, I really liked The Black Keys. Still do... but for me I got way into them around Magic Potion, and this album, even though it's got great production and a lot of hits, never really did it the same for me compared to the raw blues riffs on the older stuff. Solid 4/5 though.
Cool to hear some old styles and sounds in a modern context. Much more enjoyable than I expected at first.
"Brothers" by The Black Keys is a masterclass in modern blues-rock, blending raw emotion with gritty production. Standout tracks like "Tighten Up" and "Howlin’ for You" showcase the duo's knack for catchy yet soulful hits, while the album as a whole navigates love, betrayal, and redemption with lyrical depth and musical prowess. Despite a few moments where the momentum wanes, "Brothers" remains a compelling listen. Its blend of polished and lo-fi sounds reinvigorates the blues for the digital age. Four stars for an album that proves the timeless appeal of the blues, marrying tradition with innovation in a sound unmistakably The Black Keys.
Great album.
Big fan of the really bluesy stuff the black keys did pretty much up through this album.
Any album produced by Danger Mouse and a fellow named Neill has got to be worthy. I'm well familiar with this one. Thanks! :)
I love the Black Keys' sound, and really enjoyed this album throughout.
I really enjoyed this album and would definitely listen to it / the band more often. I very much enjoyed the drums and guitar on this album and think the lead singer has a cool voice
Rawk
It was a pretty good album
Absolutely love me some blues. This garage rock blues is a delight.
Favourite song - Tighten up
Several excellent tracks
Great songs but the tracklisting is weird making the album feeling longer than it should (pacing problem).
Blues am Morgen? Eher nicht! Am Abend nach einem anstrengenden Tag hören sich einige Songs richtig gut an! (4/5)
Great album, great vibe. I really enjoyed this album Top tracks: Howlin’ For You, Black Mud
Really enjoyed this.
Quite like the Black Keys and recognise a few of the songs (and the album).
After giving Brothers a good listen. Its actually a pretty great album. The guitar riffs were raspy and bluesy in all the right ways. The singing also was raspy in all of the best ways as well. The music videos were also pretty funny which while not making the album as great as it is, it definitely added to my enjoyment. There also isn't a bad song in sight. Its a great album that is definitely worth a listen. Best Song: The Go Getter Worst Song: Black Mud
I first became aware of the Black Keys around 2006 when they released Magic Potion. I still think that is their best album, such a smoky basement blues rock sound. This is probably their next best album but also the last time I listened to a full album of theirs. I got tired/bored with their sound after this. A little bit of the same with the album Brothers - loved it at first, then came down from that high, whereas I could still listen to Magic Potion ad nauseum. Lots to like still on this album. Favorites are Everlasting Light (just a pumping bassline and beat), Next Girl (grungy), She's Long Gone (that smoky blues rock sound of theirs that I fell in love with), The Only One (just has this allure), Sinister Kid (lyrics are a bit meh, but it oozes with energy), These Days (just a slower paced blues song, something about it). Tighten Up and Howlin for You are good and their catchiest (hence they were the big singles), but they got overplayed and sometimes I'm just a bit tired of hearing those two. Make no mistake, this was a big album and there's a lot of blues rock and garage rock (or those two fused) in the last 15 years that is thanks to these guys and this album's success. But it still has its flaws.
Black Keys are pretty good
Sehr klassischer Blues-Rock. Hatte ich anders erwartet.
Handful of good songs on here. I enjoy more songs on El Camino, but this album does have it's fair share of classics.
Haven’t listened to this in years and forgot how much I liked the album as a whole vs what other stuff subsequent releases that I’ve heard from them. Overall an enjoyable listen.
Solid album. Several radio hits. Couple more soulful tunes towards the end. Howling for You is probably my favorite track. I’ll give it 6.5/10
#1 The Black Keys - Brothers (2010) Blues Rock Garage Rock, Swamp Rock, Soul, Psychedelic Rock All the sleaze of classic blues rock without any of the douchebaggery. Pretty well done and enjoyable, even if it stretches itself thin with 15 songs. Good start. Favourite Tracks: Tighten Up, Next Girl, Howlin' for You, Everlasting Light, Never Gonna Give You Up Least Favourite Track: The Go Getter
The Black Keys remain one of the best modern blues and garage rocks bands out there. They have a great sound overall, and a knack for catch hooks and riffs. This album epitimises that in many ways with a nice mix of radio hits along with some awesome deep cuts.
I haven't listened to this in years. The production is minimal but does a lot of the work -- the reverb and fuzzy distortion on guitars/bass/vocals gives it a level of blues authenticity and retro appeal that it may otherwise lack. Overall solid album and an enjoyable listen. 4.0
Consistent Bangers
Fun blend of blues and indie rock. Favorite songs: Next girl, She’s long gone, Too afraid to love you
Really cool
Very high quality album. Only the last song slightly disappointed me but was made up with the amount of bangers.
This is a solid record for sure. I don't get why it kind of gets a lot of hate for being 'white guy blues'. It's not like they're trying to be BB King or Muddy Waters. I think I like El Camino better but this is a super fun album - great sound, good songs, good riffs, good drums. I dig it. Would absolutely play this one again.
Used listen to it a lot when it came out.
é black keys, mt bom mas tem uma ou outra música mais fraca pra não dar 5
Good music
I was worried when the first track was some stomp clap white people shit, but by the end it had won me over. There's some great southern gospel rock here.
Good album for sure. Very diverse and full of bluesy, folksy style. Not quite tickling the fancy, thus the rating.
Znao sam ga otprije tj neke stvari i bile su mi top te stvari pogotovo howlin for you
Heard it before. Sttill holds up
No one else sounds exactly like this. Good rock. 4/5
Lurv this album with its bluesy//garage rock feel Cohesive and angsty, but not the hugest fan of the fuzz pedal they use on side one, but side two was amazing (ok harpsichord!) Tbh great listening experience 8/10
Wasn't rocking with the pickup truck commercial sounds, but pretty good overall with some catchy tunes
One of the better rock and roll albums we’ve had. Tighten Up really grabbed my attention with that ridiculous drum pattern. Very unique and impossible not to listen to (the drums didn’t hit with the guitar??) Whole album was a fun mix of comfortable rock and pushing the edges of comfort with different rhythms and sounds… 8/10
7/10 - Quite enjoyable. I liked most of the songs but Tighten Up and The Only One stood out to me for some reason. They all sounded somewhat similar but it was a good vibe.
I think I've heard some songs by The Black Keys, but I'm not sure. So far so good. They do sound familiar, but I don't think I've heard any of the songs on this album. Maybe I've heard "Howlin' For You". It seems familiar. 4/5 A little too bluesy for me, but I still enjoyed it.
All their songs sound the same, but luckily I really enjoy that sound
Dan Auerbach's claim that he "didn't know who the White Stripes were" when he and Patrick started the Black Keys is so full of shit. There's no chance in hell they weren't aware of another midwestern blues-infused two-piece that was already beginning to hit the mainstream. Dan, in general, is not a very reliable or trustworthy person, but that's another story for another day. That all said, starting around their third album, the Keys did carve out a slightly different niche for themselves, honing in a bit more on subtle psychedelic and R&B influences in contrast to some of the Stripes' punkier and more Americana flourishes. In my opinion, they hit their peak on the album before this one, Attack & Release, but Brothers is still pretty great. There are more than a few solid bluesier tunes - I'm especially partial to the swampy "She's Long Gone" and "Ten Cent Pistol" - that sit nicely alongside the more soulful "Everlasting Light" and "The Only One". "Sinister Kid" has a surprisingly good groove (surprising because Patrick Carney is truly not that great of a drummer half the time), "Next Girl" and "Tighten Up" are dependable singles, and even the atmospheric instrumental "Black Mud" is pretty damn cool. I think "Howlin' for You" works totally fine in context with the rest of the album, but it does telegraph the direction they're about to go in - a direction that has given them a mostly deserved reputation. Additionally, at least 3-4 tracks could have easily been left off. But I'll stand by my defense of this one (as well as Attack & Release and Rubber Factory), and I'll forever have good memories of the show I saw on this tour. 4/5
fun, bluesy, well done. probably should listen to it again. Nice!
Kende dit eigenlijk niet, paar nummer misschien. Staat nu echter wel in mijn lijstje!
great album
To begin, I find the Black Keys to be a phenomenally talented group. My first introduction to to the Black Keys was with the album "Rubber Factory" in 2004 and also "Thickfreakness" (2003) and "The Big Come Up" (2002). I guess (fairly or unfairly) that is what I use to compare "Brothers" to. "Brothers" still has all the ingredients of what makes a great Black Keys album, but it is a little more produced and lacks that pure lo-fi sound and energy from their earlier albums. I am happy to see the Black Keys success and evolution, but I will always pine for their older garage band sound and raw energy. With that said, "Brothers" will get 4 stars instead of 5.
I’ve heard of the Black Keys before and probably know some of their stuff without knowing it was them. Ah yep, I’ve heard Howlin’ for You. I really like the funky bluesy rock style overall. They remind me of the Cold War Kids, though a bit more polished. These Days was a nice soft departure from that style though, showing a bit of range in the album, and was a banging song overall. Really good album. Super impressed.
I have to start off by saying this album was extremely important for me musically just because it’s when i discovered that there was other music out there other than what was on 99.9 kiss country or the rap songs my brother would always play in the car. Sure tighten up was played ad nauseam but there is a reason for it. One of the best guitar riffs of the past two decades and maybe only topped by their subsequent album with lonely boy. Side A of this album is definitely a five with everlasting light tighten up Howlin for u and she’s long gone all straight jams. B side does kinda drag on a bit without a lot of variety and does make it a four unfortunately. I also love when band is around for awhile before they have commercial success. It clearly comes through in their song writing where they don’t give an f and are just here to make music they want to make. Lastly, one of the greatest album covers, period. So badass
I enjoy the Black Keys sound. It has a produced/manufactured roughness to it. A bit of buzz and distortion, but in a purposeful way. The first half of the album was stronger for me. I was getting a bit tired of it by the end, but I think "These Days" was a great way to finish it off. I'm curios to see if their album El Camino is on this list. I think that would be more up my ally. A shorter album with more upbeat radio hits.
Not as good as The Big Come Up or Rubber Factory but still very very good.
Honestly, bangers only.
Beautiful album.
Cool bluesy sound. Very retro indeed.
What's not to like?
Very good. I liked it.
I first discovered this album early in college and the influence it has had on my life is immense. The music of the Black Keys became the soundtrack to my college experience and their music is still discussed amongst my friend group today. While I prefer the earlier albums of the band, Brothers was the entry point for me to their discography. The album holds up for the most part today, although I believe it could be shortened by three or four songs. My favorite tracks tend to be the slower ones, especially those in which Dan sings in falsetto (Everlasting Light, The Only One, These Days, Unknown Brother).
Solid album
It’s good, not my favorite though
Wow, what a nice surprise. Am aware of the Black Keys mostly the current stuph, but this album kicks. Just a guitar and drum duo amazes you how much quality sound they produce. The guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach is also a sometime DJ on Sirius XM radio
Great crunchy pop guitar. Stellar soul vibe. Toe tapping beats. One of the better albums.
Solid new blues rock.
I quite enjoyed this. It kinda grew on me, and would consider listening to other albums by this band. I give this album 4 out of 5 stars.
listened to again great album
I think there are better albums by them but some of my fav songs are on this album and reminded me how much I love this group and need to listen to them more.
great stroll through memory lane
Solid. Chill vibes. BFs favorite band so that gets brownie points. 8/10. Smoking outside at 1am vibes.
Favourite songs: Howlin' For You, Tighten Up, She's Long Gone, Next Girl, Sinister Kid, Everlasting Light, Ten Cent Pistol Least favourite songs: Unknown Brother 4/5
Great alum that has great beats, lyrics/vocals and all around vibes. 4
4/5 listened 3x
Standouts: Howling for You, Tighten Up, Solid: 4/5
3.5 tycker att låtarna är ganska bra men skulle önska lite mer variation. allt låter exakt likadant
"Brothers" by The Black Keys is an album with a tender personality. Behind the '10s garage rock haze, the listener can find songs of desire, deception, and heartbreak embellished with a creamy guitar and raspy voice. Yes, it has the singles, but what gets you is the side B: the slow songs.
I have been a casual Black Keys listener in the past and enjoyed this.
Solid album with a classic FIFA tune on there.
A couple solid bangers on this one.
I wrote this one off almost immediately to be honest, but the longer I listened to it the more I realised that the BKs are actually quite a nuanced band, and not just another radio-rock outfit. I particularly enjoyed Black Mud - a Zep inspired broody blues song, shame it wasn't longer is all I can say!
One of the better modern rock albums
Soft 4
Buen fondo
Yes, this is a Blues-album but it sounds unlike any other Blues albums out there. The songs contain great hooks and a fuzzy bass, the production value is top notch. I will listen to this again. 4/5
It's pretty great. Wee bit too long?
Bangers here also
Arctic Monkey vibes, quite like them
Only heard the one song before this. Pretty stellar album really. Have another artist I need to look in to.
Good I like them
Great album they still play some of these songs in live shows after 12 years.
Great stuff 4/5
Tightened Up is very good. The vibe, chill lyrics, great sound. Howlin' For You has that classic backtrack that is used in a lot of movies. She's Long Gone has feel. Good passion. Great guitar. This album is a great demonstration of what I know The Black Keys to sound like. I enjoyed it.
Good music, nice to listen to. More for background than active listening.
Solid modern rock album. Some of the instrumentals of the albums had nostalgic feels to them. Some of the songs could have been mixed better
Pretty decent. Would listen again
3.5
4/5 Nice rock tunes.
After reading through some other reviews, I just can't understand the hate for this album. If nothing else, it's easy to listen to, catchy, and well produced. Seems like people are penalizing them for making a blues inspired album that wasn't written in 1950 in the south.
Heerlijke bluesy garage rock.
infravalorado. rockanroll, guitarra caliente, simple 442. discazo
The Black Keys have a very distinct sound. They do one thing and they do it well. Stand-out: The Only One
I'll be honest, I kind of wrote this album off as I saw it as a sell out record of such. All of a sudden the band I loved because they had such a raw stripped down sound, was the overproduced pop band. No longer did they stick to one guitar, one drum set like they did in past records, but used session musicians to offer a fuller sound!? Gross. Now revisiting it, I don't know why I had such a negative view of this album (and El Camino). The music is still fantastic, even though it has a *gasp* bass guitar. They were definitely at the forefront of this stoner rock, blues, psychedelic revival we see these days.
A good album but not my type.
喜欢第一首!
Will listen again
This is a great album, at least I think so. There was not a song on here that I did not enjoy.
Kinda of sounds like T. Rex by way of Chess/Stax. Despite falling prey to (or establishing?) certain production trends the early 2010’s -- distortion/reverb on the voice, melodic hooks being whistled - there are tight arrangements of drum and guitar, and mercifully there are no heave-ho crowd-shouted choruses or ukeleles. I like their first album better but this was pretty good quality for its time.
A consistently good album. Near 5 stars.
I had only heard the radio singles before this, so I didn't expect much. However, the album is significantly better than those couple of tracks I had heard. Not bad at all.
I liked this album and I think 4 stars
Didn't get to listen to it properly all the way through but I definitely liked it.
Vibes vibes vibes
I had an absolute ball revisiting this album. The most expansive buffet of fuzz guitar tones on one album - the guitar production is stellar, there's so much happening on each ear, on each song, making this an album worth revisiting whenever you want to get inspired by truly inventive yet classic guitar playing. The vocal hooks are also so pop friendly, can't stop singing half of em. This album makes me want to enter a jam room and play the drums badly or play one note guitar solos with tons of feedback. Truly enjoyable, and what a feat to have an album like this in what, 2010? So very cool. Although my only complaint was that I start to lose focus by mid second half cause the sound is SO consistent lol. The last two songs are very cool though. Never gonna give you up (not that one) is a new fave, Next girl was a song i was already obsessed with. I wanna listen to El Camino now!
Always loved the Black Keys so this was an easy listen. Standouts: * Tighten Up * Howlin' for you * Too Afraid to Love you Ten Cent Pistol and the guitar tons kinda reminded me of Joe Frazier by Orions Belte. Overall I loved the "pacing" of the album and something silly but exciting for me was how playable it all sounded. It didn't seem overly complicated with the chord rhythyms and bass lines. It seemed like something I would play with my friends. Even the "nah nah nah NAH NAH" hooks just seem like so much fun. This listen definitely made me want to go back and check out my old playlists and see what other gems I missed out by listening only to songs instead of whole albums! The only minus here is it made me think of their other album and "Lonely Boy" constantly haha. I think it's close to 4.5 out of 5 the only reason it's not is some of the songs on the album were a tough forgettable. Maybe because of how strong some of the standouts were?
Impressions: My type of alternative rock that is heavy on the bass. Underrated album released in 2010, why haven't I heard of this before? Favorite tracks: Everlasting Light, Next Girl, She's Long Gone, Too Afraid to Love You, Chop and Change Rating: 4/5
Its very good, solid album, but a bit long and some songs could just sounds the same.
Favorite Tracks: Everlasting Light, Next Girl, Tighten Up, Howlin' For You, Black Mud, The Only One, Ten Cent Pistol, Sinister Kid, I'm Not the One, Never Gonna Give You Up
Really good album. That's how blues in modern music sound like. Good chemistry between the instruments and catchy melodies. (77%)
Solid album. Would and will listen to again
Awesome record. Funky without overdoing anything. Every song is different.
Muzikaal goed, relaxt om naar te luisteren. Springen geen hits bovenuit.
Everlasting Light: a classic, one of the first songs I had saved on my GTI. Great album to run to, tighten up and howlin’ for you other good ones
It's okay
Their signature blues-rock sound, while undoubtedly their forte, is formulaic. Their songs feel predictable. The simplicity of their music is both a strength and a weakness. The band is straightforward and unpretentious, but lacks musical complexity and depth. And the lead singer's distinctive vocal style, while certainly unique, feels like it has no vocal range.
Really good but gets a bit boring towards the end
I enjoyed listening to this. Easy listening
Black keys is good, idk. They were played a lot of The Radio Station I Listened To On The Drive To Highschool and thus imprinted on me. Basically the definition of music that is good. Only bad thing I can say for it is somewhat excessive use of stereo. If I wanted feel like I was physically embodied in a location I would not be wearing headphones. So I will not downgrade it. Because in 2010 it's kinda unforgivable.
good album
Each song is a separate symphonic universe of it's own, born out of lost memories and heartbreak, which can be endlessly explored with every re-listen.
I wasn't expecting this album to be as solid as it was. Doesn't step too outside of its comfort zone. A solid set of modern bluesy rock songs. The exact kind of thing you expect from the black keys. One dimensional? Sure, but a good listen nonetheless. Gonna give it a few more listens to get a feel for it obviously. But liking what I'm hearing so far.
A groovy and sexy blues rock album, I really cant get enough of The Black Keys, simple yet deep sound.
BL: a band my guitarist of an old band I was in absolutely adored along with the bassist but never got the chance to listen to them. As they were both utter talents this is going to be a project that has a high expectation from me to be honest. AL: this was a very fun rock record. I found it to be in the same vein as The White Stripes, I suppose they were both part of that same wave of 00s rock. A fine addition to the listening repertoire, some tracks will definitely make their way into my playlists. But also suffered from having some filler. FT: “She’s Long Gone”, “Too Afraid to Love You”, “Never Gonna Give You Up”, “These Days” 4/5
I liked it a lot when it came out. It’s even better now to listen to the whole album.
iffy on the opening 1/3 of the album. track 7 and on is splendid.
Awesome rock record, some classics in there already. Reminds me of FIFA. Laid back rock, pretty good for lounging.
As the first album to pop up, I'm excited for the roller coaster ride of random albums to begin! So many great songs on this one album with Next Girl, Tighten up, and Howlin' For You happening right after another! Definitely deserves a spot as one of the greatest albums of the 2010s!
This album and El Camino will always hold a special place in my heart because they were my oldest son’s favorite albums when he was a toddler. Consequently, I’ve listened to both of them— though, to be honest, El Camino got the most rotations, by far— front front to back many, many times. More than many albums that are objectively better. Oh well. They’re both fun albums. And they rock. No shame in that. I have friends that love the early Black Keys albums and think the band had sold out by this point. I say if ever a band benefited from selling out, it was the Black Keys. I don’t care for the white dudes playing the blues vibes I got from the early stuff, not that I’ve given it much of a chance; too reminiscent of Blueshammer for me. But this is much less self-serious. Or maybe that’s the marketing— the clever album cover and the entertaining music videos. Either way, it’s just fun.
I can't remember if this is my first listen through this whole album. It's a good album on its own, but definitely not my favorite by the Black Keys. For me it's missing the raw Mississippi Delta blues guitar work that forms the core of their earlier albums Thickfreakness and Magic Potion, which partly returned for El Camino.
Fun, buzzy blues rock. Recognized a few songs
I like this, but the soul seems like filler to the blues. El Camino is the other way round.
Fakker med Black Keys, er jo med i limitless filmen
Many songs that I recognise, thoroughly enjoyed it. A big change to what I usually listen to.
I liked the garage, blues rock feel it had, as most of the Black Keys stuff is. The opener was especially good, I like Dan Auerbach’s falsetto.
I remember these guys in the early 2000s at a time I wasn't able to appreciate their work back then. It's nice to hear that their songwriting skills have been sharpened. Took them a while to get mainstream success but this album proves it was worth it.
Pretty cool. Definitely enjoyable, but a bit too long
Deep tracks had a nice gritty modern blues feel. The popular radio tracks feel like I'm at a sportsball venue.
Have known it before. Good use of steady, carrying beats, with lo-fi singing style that adds another dimension as if it’s an instrument. Sounds of the instruments feel isolated yet modified, creating complex sounds combination.
I mentally prepared myself for listening to a Black Eyed Peas album, then was pleasantly surprised.
I’ve always loved this album. It’s such a nice feeling to listen to while strutting through town, day or night. It needs to be more regular in my rotation, even if most of it is played all the damn time.
Knew one song (howlin for you)
A great rock album!
AJ: My dad actually showed me this album. Heard em on the radio probably and turned into one of a thousand “found this at newbury’s!” albums. It’s good, simple rock and roll. Good vibe. They sound like a lot of bands I love. The video for Lonely Boy (not on this album 🤣) is an all timer. It’s a 3, but it’s getting a 4 from me. Cuz i said so.
chill
Rock. Blues.
Great guitar work. Great production. 👍🏻
4.5
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Everlasting light, Tighten up, Howlin for you, Never gonna give you up
Pretty damn good
Excellent blues rock
6/15, 40%
Really great record, a good long listen
This album is pretty ROCKING. Nice to hear, I've always let the Black Keys pass me by a bit.
I have not consciously listened to the Black Keys before, but I feel like I've heard them. Maybe in TV commercials? I was pleasantly surprised. The drum sounds are amazing. The singing is good, just wished there was a bit more variety. I'll listen to this one again.
The first album on this platform, and I absolutely loved it! So many good songs. I experienced it as very relaxed and experimental rock. Really an album I would listen to again. 4,1
I'd say I'm a fan: the groozes and rhythms were strong and really just slapped. This was completely unexpected as I've never heard of this band before but I fucking loved it. Will definitely add to my regular rotation as it offered so much more than I originally thought.
Pretty good in my opinion
keep my name outta your mouth!!!!
I haven't listened to this album in awhile. It definitely takes he to a specific time and place.
El Camino lepsze, ale wciąż bardzo przyjemne.
Good stuff
A really solid collection of bluesy rock gems, I definitely need to spend some more time with Black Keys
Ok first up: I hate this album cover. This smarmy, hipster, it's-2010-and-you're-in-an-Urban-Outfitters album cover. Anyways, the music is pretty great. It's groovy, it's confident, it sounds cool and fun and the production and arrangements are nuanced. This album is good enough to make up for it's shitty, we-think-we're-better-than-you-but-we're-pretending-we-don't album art.
I have already heard this album
Very repetitive but I really like this. I'm gonna definitely check out their other albums
Why such simple beats can work so well ? I'm afraid to play this kind, the simple and effective one. But here it is.
I liked it!
I was surprised that I was familiar with several of the tunes on this album. Felt a bit derivative but the songs weren't bad.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - She's Long Gone (5) 2 - Tighten Up (3) 3 - Sinister Kid (10)
I’ve always loved this album. When my son was a little guy, we listened to this all the time on the way to preschool. What holds me back is when I’ve seen them in concert the show isn’t as good as the album, but that isn’t the albums fault. Good solid, blues based rock. 4/5. If I could, I’d probably go 4.5 but not all the way to 5.
Muy buen disco de los Black Keys, es una banda que me gusta mucho.
this is so good.
I vividly remember this coming out and loving all the singles. What a nostalgic trip listening again was after all these years. I’ll never not love it, but it isn’t a perfect album. It’s extremely top loaded and could be a lot shorter. I think I’ll create my own reordered version as a playlist that would make it a perfect album! Sometimes less is more, boys…
Brothers is a great blues/garage rock album with the familiar sounds of Dan Auerbach's vocals and guitar riffs. Despite it's length and the personal issues the bandmates had at the time, it manages to keep you engaged throughout. Best: Howlin' For You Worst: These Days 3.5 stars
Black keys rule!!!
Very good album. Seriously. Added a few more songs on third listen. However, the sound is a bit too popish for me.
Yesterday I happen to listen to their album "El Camino" and can safely say that is the superior album. This one is still good though
Excellent, but not their best.
Nice sound. I'd like to listen again
Solid summer album
very solid garage rock album. some hits on here too that i completely forgot were by the black keys. enjoyable throughout.
Giving it 4 stars because everything can't be 5 stars. Great songs, but it's nothing I couldn't live without ever hearing again.
Always was a fan of the Black Keys and their minimalist stompy rock. This album catapulted them to a new level of fame, and rightfully so, it’s an excellent showcase of their talents and probably the best of their catalogue. A few songs are a little too simple stupid, but the majority prove that there are new and innovative ways to play the blues. Although this came out when rock music was branching into new directions, and sounded somewhat pastiche, I think over time this will hold up well against its peers.
Great album.
Good album, tails off a bit at the end though.
I had no idea what to expect with these guys. I've heard of them, but had no clue what genre they are. I was pleasantly surprised! I like them. Modern, but soulful Good stuff
Consistently good, but falls just a wee bit short of great, in my opinion. Wear their influences on their sleeves, in a good way, but I hoped for more from them, perhaps because I had liked everything I had heard from them previously. A solid 4 stars though, which is better than most!
This album is all about texture and tone. It is also an album of contradictions, with brash distorted vocals and guitars but also subtle details. I would imagine it is a grower with repeated listens. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: These Days Date listened: 15/05/23
sans grandes surprises, s'écoute très bien !
Good album. Very lounge rocky. I like the lyrics, but find the overall laid backness of all the tracks detracts from the album as a whole. That being said, solid 4.
They’re not really my thing but I do get why people like them. I do very much like the song Howlin’ For You, so that it was on this album made me think, oh maybe I’ll like this album as much as that song, but alas, just not my thing. Still giving it 4 stars though because I feel like they deserve it. 😂
It was decent, just overall good vibes and nothing too bad about it at all. Kinda same-ey at time but not much
This is more like it. I knew some of the songs before listening to the whole album, and it's a great listen overall.
Wow echt een mooi album. Ik moet ze eens wat meer beluisteren!
I was surprised to see The Black Keys in 1001. I mean, they are cool, but just random guys from my university playlist. Anyway, the album is easy and nice.
A great blend of rock and blues, and the lead singer's voice adds so much to each and every song
Great record this. Recognised quite a few songs off it despite never listening to this before. I remember them being the leaders of that whole garage rock / blues revolution, but I managed to listen to most of the others without the top dogs. Big fan of that whole bassy, echoey sound, and the subtle added instruments take it beyond most garage rock without detracting. Only downside for me is it is quite long, but I’ll definitely return. For years, ‘Tighten Up’ would get stuck in my head but I never knew who it was, so I’m pleased that mystery is solved.
another mega nostalgic one. feels like 8th grade. i think 10 cent pistol might be the best song on this album this band is just so good and I love that it's just the two of them. Dan's voice is perfect for blues
I love the Black Keys sound, bluesy rock twinged in Americana. This record is one of the earlier ones and is quite raw, and perhaps they have not truly found their groove at this point. Still, a decent listen.
This is the album that introduced me to The Black Keys and it's probably their best (that I've heard, anyway). Authentic sounding blues rock with soulful tendencies. The first four tracks are excellent, and the more chilled final three are nice too. The middle of the album is inconsistent, and there are times when I wonder if it's all a bit... average? But nah, overall this record is solid - not outstanding, but with some stand-out moments. Much like The Black Keys in general. 3.5
It's like the White Stripes but slightly worse.
The first album that I've listened to in entirety before this project! I still like it, but not as much as I remember.
down and dirty blues based garage rock with a retro sound. great use of distortion in vocals and guitars. highlights include: “tighten up”, “she’s long gone”, and “sinister kid”. solid album, top to bottom.
This one was pretty good. Had some bangers.
I really, really like this album. It’s weird, because the Black Keys are a band that I like when I hear them but I don’t go searching for them. This is the first time I sat down with one of their albums and it was just chock full of great songs. I probably would’ve cut a few off towards the end (but the last two or three songs were excellent) as it got a little long but there wasn’t any BAD songs. I’m debating on a 4 here as I can’t go 5 but I feel it’s silly to mark it down as a 3. But I also know I’m not going to go listen to all of their other albums like if I was really, really blown away but I know that they’re probably also great listens. Torn. Fuck it.
Wow can't believe it's just two dudes
Full of hits. Even the non-hit tracks were good. This album sees the band move on from their stripped-back blues sound to a more polished indie-influenced sound. It obviously worked out well for them.
Overall a very consistent album, not something I would usually check out but after hearing the first couple of songs and recognising the classic that is ‘Howlin” for you’ I did begin to enjoy it, not sure how often I’ll return to it but it was a nice first listen
pretty front loaded but I still like the music
Godt album!
I really enjoyed this. Bought a second-hand CD of it.
Listened Before? N Man, 1001 on a ROLL lately. This one was unfamiliar as well, but I enjoyed it a lot. Enough to add it to my collection, so good job! Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: I'm Not the One
Well, this was revelatory to me. I thought I’d heard of the band. I thought I knew a couple of tracks. And I think I recognised that a couple of songs have been used for adverts. But on the whole, this was completely new to me. Sometimes when this list has offered me up something that I have very little or no previous knowledge of, it has turned out to be stupefyingly mediocre or something that I never want to listen to again. However, this to me felt like a timeless classic. If you’d asked me to pinpoint an era, I would never have gone with 2010. It feels earlier. Or somehow out of time. But my instinct has been to have the album on hand to play, whenever I could today. I think I’m on my third listen and it’s just getting better. I absolutely love Sinister Kid and Howlin for You and Too Afraid to Love You and Tighten Up. This has been a great new find. I’m just trying to wonder what happened in 2010 for me to miss this?
This was a nice surprise. I didn't care for it when this album came out, but today I was totally digging it. It could probably use a little trimming, but all in all I like their sound and the guy's voice—even though it's limited in range. Good production, too.
Great
Generic rock album with 2-3 bangers but a lot of filler. I would almost describe this as "lounge" rock - I imagine it being played in some underground swanky rock club filled with cigarette smoke. Not the biggest fan of the vocals outside of the hit songs, and same with the drums. The best sound on the album is the overdriven guitars and fuzzy bass. Still, the Black Keys are definitely talented at what they do, and I enjoyed the listen overall.
This is a five star album through 9 or 10 tracks. I love the distorted, bluesy sound for both guitars and vocals. The album is at its peak when, as I listened the second time, the volume was unexpectedly way too high and smashed me in face. It get good in my bones. The last 4 or 5 tracks are fine, but feel like a significant drop off.
Great album. Was my intro to Black Keys and am enjoying my repeated listening.
Excellent guitar riffs, true rock vibes, and overall songs were energized and exciting.
Really great album
nostalgia pura por este disco
Vau, nice, tikrai above average mano skoniui
Preferred El Camino
Great album, good stuff - 4 stars
Amazing modern rock and blues album.
Album classique de mes 16ans mais moins bien que el camino
Man, everybody in high school was always telling everybody to listen to the black keys. I liked this, but I do feel like it leans heavily on that specific, somewhat distorted sound. Many songs are similar. These Days was my favorite, although I was kind of hoping it would be a cover of the Jackson Browne song.
Almost a classic though I still think it's a touch too long.
Very good performance of twee musi ians!
great album, 4.
I like the Black Keys even though I can't name any of their music. I've seen them perform on TV, and occasionly heard their music through YouTube. Only one track on this album was familiar to me. I forget how bluesy their music can be. I might come back for a second round. "Tighten Up" and "Everlasting Light" were my favorite tracks.
Really brought me back, lots of nostalgia here 4.4.
This is a really tight album
Black Keys are generally pretty fun, kinda wear down over the course of a whole album. 2010's kind of the tail end for this sort of sound being fashionable, the bass is mixed more heavily, we're not quite to the point historically of dubstep being shoved in everyone's faces for half a decade, but it's hard not to think about that coming as this starts to die off
I think the most astounding this is album his how many songs got airplay. It's not quite my vibe, but I cannot deny the mastery.
Unique sound and enjoyable listen
Very nice blues rock. The first half of the album is better imo
A solid effort by the BKs, but otherwise outdone by Camino.
Bit on the long side, but hard to complain when it's all this fresh, innovative and gleefully hedonistic. A great record.
