Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Loved it. I did not really know the band apart from their big hit and was very pleasantly surprised. Watching the videos from their hits was fun. Four stars

Dexys doing Dexy things..

Eileen’s album, liked it

Come On Eileen is such a banger and it was on twice. That alone gave it an extra star, because if we're going to be honest, the rest of the album deserves only three stars. They seem like a great band to see in a small venue, though.

Dexys: I think I’m a Dexys fan? Enjoyed both of their albums. This one is the stronger of the two albums and has violins. it was a fun listen . Favorites: Come on Eilleen I’ll show you Dubious I liked the Van Morrison cover too. like his singing style he’s like an even drunker sounding Elvis Costello.

Sehr viel positivi Vibes. Fühli

These lads are fun

Just a vibe all the way through, really nice sound. 4 stars

Great Album

A good album, I liked Plan B the most.

This was way more fun than I thought. Come on Eileen is the obvious runaway hit, but the whole thing was a fun jaunt. Gets a little samey here and there but overall just a good, fun album.

the white people go crazy for come on eileen

Liked this more than I thought I would. Fun, upbeat album. The vocals are a bit whiny at times but the choruses save it

I am actually pretty positively surprised by this. I only knew Come on Eileen, and didn’t really know what exactly to expect. I get The Cure and Talking Heads vibes, which is a very good thing. I like most of the songs, and will get back to this on a regular basis for sure

Very jolly jolly

Dobar ali ne sve pesme

Fun as hell. I was tempted to give it a 5, honestly, but I don’t know how often I’d return to any other track besides the obvious one. And I did listen to the 2022 remaster, which sounds amazing. Don’t know how earlier versions compare. Either way I loved this, it’s a must-listen. #106.

Such great timing, my girlfriend and I have been listening to Come On Eileen on repeat ❤️🥰 toora loora toora too rye ay 🎶

I think these guys are wildly underappreciated. I never would've listened to them without this list, which is a shame. This is a fun album that I'll probably revisit.

What a bop. The strings! The horns! The groove! The harmonies! Here for it. And of course, who can go pas the classic Come On Eileen.

What a wonderful and fun album. I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing consecutively. It's odd to think that come on. Eileen would be one of the weaker tracks in retrospect. Still a great song but not as engaging as several of them.

Previously rated: Don't Stand Me Down (3/5) ********************************* A decent sounding album with a unique sounding singer. If I heard any of these songs on their own, I'd say "hey that's the come on eileen guy!" And bumping the rating up by one solely for the aforementioned Come On Eileen. I've always loved that song.

Some absolute bangers on here like Jackie Wilson Said and Come On Eileen. Unlike a lot of 80s albums it has aged well. A shame they could never replicate the heights of this album. 4/5

Just fun, isn't it?

I was 11 when this came out, if they had not released come on Eileen, I think I might have given them a chance as I can't stand that song! The rest seen to good. Also I saw Kevin Rowlands at a reading festival singing to a backing track, the track kept breaking down much to the amusement of the crowd, Kevin bless him found this very annoying and threw a strop at the crowd, wrong move as we responded with plastic bottles, turning the whole thing into a farce, I am loving this app as it causes me to listen to new music and look back on happy memories. Thanks Kevin 🍼

Enjoyed it up until COE. Really dropped off after that

Now THIS was good! Funny enough we had them two days ago and it was horrible, but this album makes me wonder why just one song was chosen! My one complain is the talking- it bothers me because it’s out of place and just not good end of story. Everything else was great- there was uniqueness but not to a weird extent, and I did enjoy it.

This is exactly the kind of album that I am doing this project to hear. Made famous from Come on Eileen, listening to the full album fills in so much of the broader context of the sounds and energy from this band. Really enjoyed this one

Allegro, spiritoso, mi piace.

This is the only DMR album that deserves to be on this list.

Listened Before? N What an interesting and unusual blend of traditional folk/rock sound and electronic new wave stuff - to mostly good effect. I really enjoyed this and I'm adding it to my rotation. (I may be an idiot but I still don't understand the title). Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Come On Eileen

Bardzo przyjemna potupaja. Wokalista ma dość dziwną manierę, ale da się przyzwyczaić. Come on Eileen to jedna z moich ulubionych piosenek, więc z automatu zawyża ocenę. Reszta jest dość podobna, trochę monotonna w swojej taneczności. 7/10

Come On Eileen is of course horrendously overplayed, but within the context of this album it's actually a cracking song. And there are several other great tracks on here; Jackie Wilson Says, The Celtic Soul Brothers and more. I really enjoyed this (and don't really understand the folks objecting to Kevin Rowland's voice, which I quite like). A strong four, close to five.

This is one of those bands that I never would have imagined being as good as they are before listening to their catalogue more deeply. Some bands are one hit wonders because they only had one great song in them, and some are one hit wonders because they get unlucky. I think of DMR as the latter type of band. This album is great, and so are the other two albums I've gotten on this list. Now, setting aside the fact that this band has more records on this list than John Coltrane, which is a whole other issue, this band fucking kicks ass. The music feels so full of sound, but it's all coherent. The singer's voice is great. The fact that Come On Eileen is more than halfway through this album, and I never felt like I was waiting for it while I listened to the songs before it says a lot. This band deserved better than we gave them as a global musical audience 4/5

Too rye too rye too rye ay!

Best leuk album, vooral come on Eileen is bekend, maar voor de rest zaten er best wat leuke nummers tussen. 7.5/10

Rather original and boisterous, I like it but the singer isn't very good which hurts a bit. Come on Eileen is awesome. 3.8

Absolutely chock full of bangers and a fantastic energy. Very hick-ish unfortunately, so not everyone will appreciate it.

Nice voices, peppy beat. Surprising. Jackie Wilson Said is a classic Celtic Soul. 4/5. Come On Eileen is fun 4/5.

Folkish rock. I knew Come On Eileen of course but this album is so much more than just that song. Definitely a good one.

Convinced that DMR should not have been a one hit wonder.

Loved this album more than expected

An album I don't need to listen to to rate, like many around in 82 when all the singles were inescapable, and COE was to the time what Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas are for modern Decembers, except much more so.

Surprisingly good. Nice combination of fiddle and horns.

Come on eileen. Album low key slaps

This is a solid 3* album for the first nine tracks and then Come on Eileen hits and I'm dancing like a goofy Englishman. So good. And I am rounding up because of it. 3.75/5

I’d never listened to this before and really enjoyed it. Blending folk and soul like this is an original idea that still sounds fresh. The songwriting is really strong with great melodic moments on every song. I almost gave it the full 5 points… but not quite. 4.5

A lovely record full of well crafted tunes. I don’t know why I’d not heard the album before as I love the debut record. Oh and the MFSB cover on the extended version is divine

Yeah I loved this, Come on Eileen is fine if not super over played but the rest of the album is really solid

This is a really fun album. Can be a bit corny at times, but you'll have that when horns are involved.

What an enjoyable listen, always sounds like they are having fun; right from the first track ... oh my gosh ... from folk fiddles to a horn section in the second track - love it. I must admit the second half of the album doesn't match up to the initial thrill of the first half though. Well-produced with varied, relevant and enjoyable arrangements. The vocals suit the style really well and they always sound as if they are having fun, often the production makes it almost live. ... and we have a new anthem in 'Old'!

Not crazy about the lead singer's voice. Solid Ska in here as well as some Cure feeling tracks. Definitely an album that was overshadowed by it's most famous track. Killer album! Fav Track: I'll Show You

I was expecting this to be a cool album. It seemed like one song building toward something and already having heard that one song, Come on Eileen. It wasn't really building toward that song though was it. Whatever it was it was cool. Like it was written in hidden alleyways.

a wee bit too kitschy but i like it

Sags somewhat in the middle, but for what it is, this is primo soul-inflected new wave. With their slashing violins and riotous horns, Dexy's were a real one off. The big songs still pop. 'Jackie Wilson Said' is all buoyancy and feeling, and 'Come On Eileen' hasn't diminished in stature despite being played at every UK wedding for the past forty years. Perhaps it sounds fresh because it's the first time I've heard it sober since childhood?

very fun aber bissi lang

This is a weird one. It really grew on me over a few listens. A good pop album overall

I was excited when this showed up on my list for today. I've loved "Come On Eileen" since 1982 and still see the video in my mind when I hear the song.

Great fun music!

what are the chances of getting 2 of these in a week? lovely strings i get it now

8/10 A surprise banger, this one. I know the 2 big hits but not the rest. When an album sounds instantly familiar, that is a great sign of both quality songwriting and influence on later music Kevin Rowland is a pretty singular voice Musically it is built on the pop and new wave of the time, heavily Celtic influenced, but also adds in reggae and other sounds Best: Come On Eileen

I didn’t think this album would be bad. But I did not think this album would be this great, wow.

Feel good, soulful indie. Giving perks of a wallflower. A couple jazz songs thrown in there. Sometimes felt a bit repetitive but would listen again and would’ve loved to see them live with beer in hand!!

Soulful, fun and buoyant. Rowlands does try a bit too hard, maybe. Van cover doesn't do much, but the record gets better as it goes along. "Old" and "Let's Get This Straight" are among several plus tracks.

Rowland's unique vocals coupled with interesting context matter ('Plan B' and Eileen specifically) means that you're never bored in the company of DMR.

Rowland’s crazy vocal is probably enough to carry this entire album alone - but solid songwriting is absolutely helping as well!

Good stuff. Come on Eileen!

It was interesting to listen to the song that all of us have heard too many times in context with the rest of the album.

i really love the style of music the dexys make, so distinctive and upbeat. this album particularly displays that well, with its pop and rock influences, catchy mantras and harmonies. every track on this record felt at home in the album, and as a collective it flowed nicely. it goes without saying that “jackie wilson said” and “come on eileen” are 2 incredible songs, and ending the album on “come on eileen” solidifies this records greatness. will certainly listen again.

had so much fun with this! 4.5

Classic

fun album come on eileen is truly an iconic song

I was excited for this one, obviously everyone knows Come on Eileen, but I’ve also seen quite a few references to them in the Punk/Oi! world. I really liked this, will likely revisit this album soon

This was real fun! Like most folks I imagine, I only knew one (actually 2) song(s) on this album, and it’s a really good one. The rest is great also, and not exactly what I expected. The other song I knew was a cover of Van Morrison’s Jackie Wilson Said, which is kind of the key to album. It’s actually a little more Wilson than Morrison but there’s definitely more than a hint of Irish folk mixed with the classic R&B flavors. Good stuff!

After Searching for the Young Soul Rebels this is a less spectacular album. It contains the hit song and the rest of the material is also great rock and new wave.

they stay in their lane but their lane is unique and interesting and has at least one smash hit

Better than expected

i worry the only good song from here will be come on eileen but lets see celtic soul brothers- its fun 6 or 7 lets make this precious- 6 all in all- 5 or 6 jackie wilson said- white people music. 7 or 8 tbh. type music that makes me wanna say "WELL HOTDOG" and start dancing old- 4 kinda boring plan b- 5 ill show you- 5 liars a to e- 5 or 6 until i believe in my soul- flute. 4 boring. except for the part where he goes "aw you must be fucking joking" thats funny come on eileen- COME ON EILEEN DONT EAT UP MY SPLEEN im temptex to give it a 10 tbh i missed this song show me- 6 or 7. my mom called me in the middle of me listening to this to tell me there was a double rainbow outside. it was pretty dubious- 5 tsop- 6 or 7 lets get this straight from the start- 5 reminisce- 5 i was wrong theres other good tracks on here favorite song- COME ON EILEEN AT THIS MOMENT YOU MEAN EEEVERYTHING

Come on Eileen is a favorite… evokes such happy memories. I enjoyed this album.. mostly.

2024-07-10...

Extra star for Come On Eileen

delightfully fun. i love the intro to jackie wilson says

Fun, well assembled album.

The city oldest album of its day

The Celtic Soul Brothers // Let’s Make This Precious // All In All // Old // Liars A to E // Come On Eileen //

Honestly, I knew the song everybody knows off of this album. So... I didn't really know what to expect. Not much, maybe. And actually... This is a GRAND album.

This was my first time listening to this album, and “Come On Eileen” basically sums up everything you need to know about what the entire album sounds like. Overall, it was a decent album. I would say most of the songs would get a 3.5 rating out of 5 on their own merit.

Very interesting, needs a couple more listens. Very diverse in terms of instrumentation.

Fun music on a day I needed something like this.

I did like this one 4 stars

come on eileen.......

Only knowing "Come on Eileen" I was dreading this one. Well shit, it came through. Vocals have like a Robert Smith meets Freddie Mercury vibe. I love the English countryside folk music feel that is blended with almost an E Street Band vibe.

This album pleasantly surprised me. I started with a little resistence, didnt have the best mindset. But it it pleasant easy rock music, with some celtic fibes. Nice vocals.

💖 come on eileen 🗣️ 8️⃣

It took me a couple of weeks to finish this album. Good music to work to, maybe a bit long..it’s ok…not sure what to say…it’s a 3.5 for me, but I’ll go 4 ‘cos they know how to work their instruments

Definitely a solid album as well. Maybe 4 stars so far. Good horn sections. And some classic lines, including come on eileen. Nice celtic vibes make for a lovely time.

I prefer this Irish meets soul take on their sound to the synth of later, a lot more songwriting and interesting takes on manhood

Errr…not sure what’s happening here, but this is way more palatable than ‘Searching For The Young Soul Rebels’ was. I’m actually enjoying this quite a lot, and it is both confusing and concerning.

I thought I would hate this. It’s surprisingly fun! I guess I thought this band was a one hit wonder and maybe they are but the whole album is more rock opera than I expected. Liked it more than I expected. “Until I believe my soul” was groovy.

"Come on Eileen" is a classic, and I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the album.

It’s just a bit mad isn’t! Makes me think of a never-ending fair performance hosted by Bacchus; enjoyed the variety of instruments also.

Great album.

I thought Dexy's Midnight Runners was a one hit wonder. A strong start that petered off until the hit came at the end.

Niepokojąco przyjemne. Niektóre kawałki się wyróżniły, a reszta zlała się w bardzo przyjemną mieszkankę. 4/5

Bowie, The Cure, and ELO vibes throughout the album, very enjoyable. Honestly surprised Come on Eileen is an 80s song and not 70s.

High energy and a fun listen

So much energy and fun. Loves the horns and strings.

Dexys best, and there is so much more to this than just Come on Eileen (though that is of course excellent). A really fun album all round with a great blend of folk, new wave and soft punk

Pleasant surprise. Very good album all around.

I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would judged on the last album I heard. This one though is a feast to listen to, even if it's a bit front-loaded and trails off a little at the end.

4 stars

Thoroughly joyful listen and album perfect for the summer and the spring

Never knew anything other than Come On Eileen. Pretty enjoyable listen overall.

I'm hating this way less than I thought I'd hate it! I came in with pretty serious prejudice. What made me like this? Did the other Dexys Midnight Runners album just roll of me that badly? I remember not loving that one. My wariness quickly melted away when I realized... this album is a ton of fun! Complex, FUN arrangements, everyone sounds like they're having a good time. I love the horns every time they enter! Everything's NICE. And great energy. I would love to see them play. Honestly? Won me over completely. By the end I'm thinking, between the horn arrangements, the indulgent instrumentals, and the often quite silly songs, this is just great music, great musicians, fun, interesting. I kind of loved it. 4/5

I liked this album way more than I thought I would. I bet seeing DMR back in the day would have been pretty fun.

This album was good. I was really expecting ‘Come on Eileen’ to be their only hit and only decent song…. because let’s be honest that song isn’t even the best and it’s so popular. I was surprised by the other songs and how they haven’t had their time to shine. Good.

I han irgendwenn gfunde es wird vor allem bitz langwiilig, vor allem until i believe in my soul, aber nocher de übergang zu come on eileen isch siiick. Und come on eileen selber natürli en riiese song, boostets klar uf e vieri für mich.

sound vom erste song gfallt mer scho vieeeel besser als s andere album vo ihne. irgendwie throwback aber irgendwie au scho 80er. find au de zweit song goht no hard. mag de sound würkli sehr. bin bi "old" und s isch en seehr schöne song mit eigenem sound. goht haaard. ouu und er wird still und denn gots es outro de fakeout schluss gambit. nice. Plan B foht au seehr schön ah. ui nocher orgel time. und full band geeeeeeil. boah i liiike. until i believe in my soul au seehr geil und verschiedeni sache immer am passiere. come on eileen isch n absolut ziitlose banger. soooo viel hooks fuck. dases tempo uf de refrain wechslet isch sooo guet. fuesball chant bridge slappt au extreem.

UHHHH also ja wiedermal über 1h ABER es tönt schomal guet s cover hani auno gern, de grüen rand sehr cool s cover dütet zwar uf sadderi musig hii als ich bis jz ghört han de waltzer findi reeecht cool, sini stimm isch chli dramatisch aber hans na gern ERST JZ CHEGGT DASSMER DIE JA SCHOMAL GHA HEND LOL entweder gfalltmer das chli besser als s andere oder ich bin eifach chli besser gluunt oke nei isch um einiges besser come on eileen isch en unglaubliche banger ja also muss sege abgseh vo come on eileen ischmer eig nüt blibe aber es isch sehr ahgnehmi musig gsi? de luca het no gfunde nostalgisch und das triffts au sehr

Alright I'll be the one to say it...why the hell is the Come On Eileen album so good?!

I liked Come On Eileen and the last song. - 8/10

Was p fun n funky I enjoyed it, don’t know how many of the songs I’ll listen to again 7/10

Kinda didn’t pay attention to most of it but seemed solid. 7/10

I reall enjoyed the diverse range of instrumentals on this album. The songs have a hitting bass, banjos, pianos, horns, and very unique sounding. I was surprised by the song TSOP and is probably one of my favorites besides come on Eileen. 3.75

Another cracker of an album, such great energy. Every song feels like it's building up to Come On Eileen. Fave Track: Jackie Wilson Said

come on eileen tarura

Kinda fun.

Heard "Come On Eileen" on one of my mom's compilation CDs a lot growing up. Interesting to hear the rest of the album.

I always thought they were a one-hit wonder so was very surprised at how much I liked the album as a whole. Liked the first half more than the second. Rating: 4.4

Maybe it's because I grew up in an Irish music-centric home, but I enjoyed the Irish spin that Dexy's put on pop music in the 80s. You really can't argue when a group that adds violin, banjo and tin whistle to their music can be called a successful pop band - and hey, some 40+ years down the road 'Come on Eileen' is still a great hype song. 4/5.

Upbeat and a lot of fun

I really liked how the songs varied.

Surprisingly good. About half of this album could have been released and been popular singles.

Totally over the top. But the songs are great and the arrangements are sharp. However the production is a little too huge sometimes.

One has never quite sussed how Dexy's came to be such a critical fave. Now, having gone pretty deep on listening, one remains semi-perplexed. Not that's this is a bad record; it's quite enjoyable, in fact, but certainly sub-transcendent. One finds oneself trying to like it a bit more than one really wants to. It sounds good but feels maybe too overdone or overdetermined, a bit forced or contrived. It might be just too many strings and horns, say, which makes songs feel overweighted and puts one on edge waiting for cowbell). Also sounds like they were a bit fixated on image and presentation – a sure sign of trying too hard. The Van cover doesn't add to the impact overall, makes them seem like a less original and derivative band. The strengths are considerable soulfulness (see "Make This Precious" and "Old"), the overall vibe of organic, troubadoring minstrelsry and a mostly happy bent, like they're having a decent time making music. And Rowland's a strong vocalist, though a bit more restraint might be additive. There are times where he seems to have been listening to too much Freddie Mercury. Overall, though, one gets somewhat won over ... a high quantity of relatively high quality (even quality-plus) tunefulness. (But who releases a "What It Should've Sounded Like" reissue that sounds very close to original.)

Kevin Rowland is a nutter. Incomprehensible lyrics, slavedriver mentality, showman and perfectionist. There's so much to like about this. The horns. The energy. The anger.

Lovely bouncy music. Very upbeat

I mean Come On, Eileen is one of those songs in the rock and roll firmament. And there is some cool stuff in this. Jackie Wilson Said is a killer. Listening to this on Youtube is a bear. man its a shame this album got lost in the sauce because of Come On, Eileen. This was a great record!

Plucky, sweet and soulful with rich arrangements and a strong pop sensibility. And, I'll add, really unique for a pop album of its time. The musical landscape of 1982 was really all over the map, and Dexy's still managed to stand out from every other crazy thing that was going on. It sounds as refreshing now as it did then and it was a joy hearing it today. I'll also add that this album has the best Van Morrison cover I can ever recall hearing. Fave Songs: Come On Eileen, Old, Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile), The Celtic Soul Brothers (More, Please, Thank You), Until I Believe in My Soul, All in All (This One Last Wild Waltz)

I had the Pogues to listen to a few days ago with their Celtic punk, here’s Dexy’s with their Celtic soul. Not as timeless, but a fun throwback to the 80s and what predated the Britpop wave. A bonus star for being so darn cheery.

amazing new wave with celctic influence! This album is very fun and creative all the way through. Come On Eileen is a perfect song through and through. 8.4/10

Heard of the artist, but not the album. This has ‘Come on Eileen’ though which is a classic. Like the vibe right away - so far a potential 4/5 library add.

Was fun

Wow. Arbeiderklasse-musikk. Rotete og ryddig.

Happy tunes. ☘️💕🎶🥳

I accidentally like Dexy's now

i wasnt expecting this to be good, every single song here is great. the electric viola or whatever it is adds so much to the beats and grooves in here.

Such a fun album! Come on Eileen is obviously a classic, but the rest of the songs were enjoyable. I assumed they would be a one hit wonder band and the rest wouldn't be worth listening to... I'm happy that I was wrong!

This is an example of not to judge a book by its cover or so to say: never judge an album by its single. I had no idea who Dexys Midnight Runners even was... So come to find out that they did the iconic 80s pop anthem this is "Come On Eileen" I was immediately turned off. Don't let the fact that the song is fully played out stop you from checking this album out. The folksiness and bluesy feel of the album is what really caught my attention. The fact that I came out of this listening experience more curious than disappointed lets me know this is something that requires a revisit. Shout-out Dexys, this makes me feel like the 80s is more interesting outside of the standard outliers from the main genres. 3 and a half out of 5 stars.

Funny shit, the voice is a bit annoying, but overall nice

It kind of reminds me of a Celtic Electric Light Orchestra, but that is not a bad thing. Actually, it reminds me of all sort of influences, as you can hear artists like Talking Heads, David Bowie, and the entirety of punk having huge marks on the music at play here. Yet, it is all entirely its own thing here, with each song having this unique charm that feels just new wave enough to be catchy enough without coming off as just jumping in on the times. The change of music from ballads to bopping pop tunes is great and balanced well, and that fiddle is a fantastic addition to make it all its own musically. Not every slow ballad grabs me, and the hit here, Come On Eileen, I've heard far too much to give it a proper time of day, but otherwise this album is great, and I hope the somehow other two inclusions by the band on the list live up to being as good as this one.

Tried to vote as if we have just had another Dexys album a few days ago. Added a star for Come on Eileen

Only familiar with "Come On Eileen" and I thought there was a reason they were one-hit wonders, but this album was surprisingly good. No big standouts besides that one, but still a nice, pleasant listen.

I could definitely see myself playing this in the car with with the windows down on a sunny day.

Really fun, come on eileen is a classic but the rest of the album is just as great

A soulful new wave album that brought Dexys Midnight Runners to an American audience thanks to the hit Come on Eileen. Standouts: Come on Eileen, The Celtic Soul Brothers, Jackie Wilson Said. Wonderful album. Fresh sound. 4/5

Much better than I was expecting from a one hit wonder. Very solid album. I like the vocal style a lot.

Hella nice

This was a strong album. I think the second half lost me a little bit until the end. but I still liked those songs. The transitions were cool. The album felt very coherent; no song felt out of place. The first three songs were a great introduction to the album. I figured that Come On Eileen would be at the beginning, but it's a fun closing track. Kinda close to being a 5 star, but not quite there. Still great. My favourite songs were Come On Eileen and The Celtic Soul Brothers.

It seems surprising to see Dexys Midnight Runners as an essential album. I always saw them as a bit of a one hit wonder, but clearly a lot of people would disagree with this! Let’s listen and find out how a full album sounds Songs I already knew: Come On Eileen Favourites: Come On Eileen, Jackie Wilson Said, The Celtic Soul Brothers I enjoyed this quite a lot, which honestly surprised me somewhat. Their music is so very distinctive in sound. There certainly aren’t many pop bands using a mix of banjo, trumpets, piano, and violins, and this makes them very easy to identify, even if you may not be familiar with a song. This was catchy from front to back, and it really seems a shame that people (like myself before today) thought they only had one good song.

Wow, this was so much better than expected. I'd thought it was going to be too folky (plus Come on Eileen), as fiddles and such tend to lead the music. It's testament to Dexys that they lead those instruments (as they did with a soul band) towards their own pop vision.

Another very nice Dexys album, slightly less convincing than their debut.

One hit wonders are always weird because the album is usually not as good as the song. But this album was pretty fun to listen to. I ran hot and cold with Rowland's vocals. Sometimes I dug it, there were one or two songs I was thinking the song would have worked better with someone else. The cover of "Jackie Wilson Said" was pheNOMenal. I feel bad for people who bought the record for their one hit and then had to sit there to listen through everything else for the one song. Fun fact: they fired the drummer halfway through making the video, so you'll see him and then you won't. I am intrigued because they remixed the album, as they felt it could have been done better. I will give that a listen as well, which bodes well for the album itself. If it stank, why would I compare it to the remix, right? Pretty good album, overall.

This is just a fun album. Standout tracks: The Celtic Soul Brothers (More, Please, Thank You) - great opening track, Jackie Wilson Said - fun version of the Van Morrison song, Come On Eileen - a worthy hit. Would definitely revisit.

I have no idea what the lead singer is saying at least half the time, but surprisingly fun album. Love the horns and strings all over this album.

7/10. Kinda meh, but then Come on Eileen brings it up a bit.

pretty good tunes in here on top of the massive hit

Dense and on a steady high level. The shouty the album begins the more layered it gets towards the end. All instruments on point make Kevin Rowland seem to be a bit too much in love with goaty tremoli. The female choir parts are just wonderful. Comparisons with following groups stretch from Gorky‘s Zygotic Myncie over Architecture in Helsinki to Blur‘s ‚Parklife‘ era. Unexpectedly, the hit single sits waiting for you at the very end and is a good part of the whole longplayer a by far not the most important.

Second Dexys album in a couple weeks, and for the second time I am genuinely enjoying this album. 4 stars.

Mai sentita qhesta roba, mi è piaciuto

Big like. The Cure but happier and a brass section.

I am actually pretty sick of the song "Come on Eileen" and figured these guys were a one hit wonder so I was surprised to enjoy this album so much. Very cool Northern English new wave. Brit poppy moments, Celtic instrumental interludes, funny and engaging lyrics. Overall a very listenable upbeat album. A fun surprise and an album I'd like to listen to again.

Again, I liked this more than I thought I would. Dexy's really did come out swinging, and the advent of the string section definitely helped that along on this one. It's a shame all of the horns left the band immediately after this release. Lots of early ska. Sounds like the drama kids just pulled a bunch people from Orchestra, Band, and Chorus by the song to help them record in a good way

awesomeness

If you'd told me when I started doing this project that I would eventually give four stars to two different Dexy's Midnight Runners albums I would have been mildly surprised and now here we are mildly (but also pleasantly) surprised.

A weird mix between Springsteen and Morrisey? But I dig it.

I'm going to have to go back and listen to the entire Dexy's collection. They're so good. I wonder why they never got more famous here.

Alright

So much fun, more pop bands need brass sections

Complete surprise. 4.5/5

HL: "COME ON EILEEN", "All in All", "Celtic Soul Brothers", "Old" There's been some fine 80's cheese this week! I wasn't entirely sold on the plastic (rubber) soul sound & spoken word bits throughout the record, but by the famous last track I found it charming overall. Appreciated the few Gaelige lyrics in "All In All (This One Last Wild Waltz)", even if the Celtic influences aren't on display all the time.

The whole album has the same vibe as Come On Eileen, not sure why more of their music never broke through. 4.5

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Jackie Wilson said, Until I believe in my soul, Come on Eileen

This was so fun to listen to!

I was very indifferent to this album overall as I've listened across the past few days. I'm now at the end of the album and I'm starting to lean into it. With the volume up in my earbuds, I'm appreciating the well balanced frequency range. Respect to the engineer for all these instruments and effects finding their way clearly into the mix. I would like to listen to this album again. It's fun.

Very fun album. Come on Eileen obviously the smash hit, but my favorite track was actually Until I Believe in my Soul. This album was significantly better than I thought a one-hit wonder album would be

Quite a cool album. Great use of the fiddle. Very bouncy. Definitely would recommend to people.

I very much enjoyed. I also liked watching the video of Come on Eileen (how it should have sounded). Although I couldn’t really hear the difference…

Surprisingly great. Fun sound to the songs. Would 100% revisit. 4/5

I only got to like song 14 out of the 18 songs on this album so I can’t give this rating with complete confidence but I like this sound.overall sounds nice but it can get very tedious. Why does it need to be 18 tracks long and why is one of them come on Eileen live?

This album surprised me in terms of its breadth and overall listenability. You do have to fight through the meandering "Until I Believe in my Soul" to get to "Come on Eileen" which is still the clear best track. I think what struck me the most is how tight the band is and how they were able to jump around a bit in tone and instrumentation while retaining a signature sound.

Love this! Fun happy songs.

Funky and fun. Didn't know Come On Eileen was on here. I like the Celtic pop vibes from the first few tracks although there are a few that just kinda blend together and are overall forgettable.

Come on Eileen certified banger

An extra star of Eileen.

very good, was pretty impressed

I'm not normally into this sort of stuff (folky) - but this is great! Really upbeat and well produced.

Minne om biltur med pappa

When I first got this, I thought "Oh no, ANOTHER 80's one-hit wonder." Luckily this album made me it my words. Consistent fun, good songs, great performances! Definitely live up to the hit single it spawned.

Fun album with suprisingly good music. It was hard to not constanty smile while listning to this

4 I absolutely adore Come On Eileen, but always assumed it was a one-hit wonder from Dexys Midnight Runners. The Spotify play counts seem to reveal that as true, but actually listening to the album made me realize that's a damn shame - this album is an absolute blast from front to back. The sound of the band is one of the most unique I've heard, and it's really interesting to hear how they utilize it outside of Eileen (really effectively apparently). It ultimately makes a really fun, strangely danceable folk/new wave record - nothing mindblowing, but I had a good time with it. Though I didn't factor them into my review, the bonus tracks on this album were great as well. Favorite songs: Come On Eileen (duh), Plan B, I'll Show You, The Celtic Soul Brothers, Let's Make This Precious

Come on Eileen is one of the greatest sones ever made.

So glad this was on the list. Never would have sought it out otherwise. So much more than Come On Eileen

First listen. Awesome 80s pop album with one very famous track.

Come on Eileen!

This was a pleasant surprise. I will admit that I’ve only heard “Come On Eileen” before listening to this one. Well written and structured songs that embrace the past while adding a new wave edge to the sound.

Another band and an album that I wouldn't have hear about if not for this list. And that would be such a great shame! Very entertaining type of music, very fast-paced irish type music, with a lot of 'countryside' instruments and sounds on the foreground. The album starts with the most interesting song, 'The Celtic Soul Brothers'. If you have ever imagined (as I did) what would be played on the lower deck of Titanic for the common folk to dance till they can dance no more, that would be it. I was taken aback by the vocals of Kevin Rowland at first, I felt like his 'throaty' voice did not fit at all, but it quickly grew on meand by the end of the album I was completely sold. After first song the album heads the same direction - full steam ahaed to the Irish party! Few songs that are very entertaining, followed by couple slower songs, which maybe necessary, were really not to my liking. The band was at its best in a fast-flowing rhytm, where your legs dance before you can even think of it. The best example - 'Come on Eileen'. I could recognise the song in the first few seconds, but I have never known, that Dexys Midnight Runners were the first authors of it. Although not as fast-paced as rest of the album, the song is incredibly catchy, and very easy to follow along by singing and dancing. Entertaining album - I'm very happy that I found it today.

App deleted my notes. Anyway. This is good. Looking forward to the other two given the fuss made of Kevin Rowland in the music press if this is the worst one.

This is a great example of music that is very eccentric but completely coherent. They really love their trumpets and violins, and know how to write simple yet effective hooks. The vocals can be a bit hit or miss, and the slower, softer songs didn't quite hit the same for me. Overall a fun listening experience.

This was a real roller coaster for me. Had honestly never heard of the band and thought it was gonna be some outlaw country. Then was like oh are they really just putting a one hit wonder on here cuz its such a big song? Then I kind of started liking it, then got annoyed by the dudes voice, then got nostalgic for back in the day getting into ska music, then come on eileen finally came on and really rounded out the whole experience. Anyway, probz would listen to this again at some point which is more than I could say of the others we've done so far.

I can hear how this influenced bands I like today which is cool. Didn't know this was the Come On Eileen band. 4/5

Loved it.

I really enjoyed most of this album. Come on Eileen is a classic but the rest of this album supported that song really well.

I had a lot of fun listening to this album. Come On Eileen is an iconic song that I love, but I thought the rest of this album held up to its status pretty well. There were a lot of dramatic elements in the music that sometimes gave me Queen vibes.

Vrolijke popmuziek. ****

This is a pretty cool album overall and stands pretty well across the span of time.

If Robert Smith from the Cure fronted the Waterboys....with more horns. Quite enjoyed it.

Love the violin!

This album is rooted and folk and Americana idioms but placed within a grandiose new wave format. The instrumentation combines banjo, and strings, with highly orchestrated and bombastic horns. It reminds me of a more nuanced Spector like wall of sound punctuated by new wave style drums and bass.

Pop? New wave? What I hear is ska. And I love it! I saved a bunch of tracks from this and I listened -- really listened -- to Come on Eileen for the first time in forever. There's a lot of filler and overly fussy tweaks evident in the production, but lots of fun front to back.

a special kind of mood. aka family functions and carmel radio.

Come on I'm Dean, and my hands are so clean; at this moment, I am stapling!

What a tremendous and soulful mashup of post-punk/new-wave Irish folk music. More accessible than Van Morrison.

Fun, but I see why they were one hit wonders in the States

Surprising. Come on Eileen has always been on my party list but never listened to the album

C'mon Eileen ...a huge hit ...a band with little bit of style, ok.

If you love "Come on Eileen" then you'll probably love the rest of this album. Exceeded expectations for me honestly.

Música alegre, divertida, optimista, con ritmos alegres. Me ha gustado su composición y estilo, aunque la voz del cantante no me ha convencido del todo. Disco lleno de vitalidad. Alguna canción un tanto más distinta

4/5. Delightful little Celtic-pop/soul that I’ll visit on Paddy’s Day

I admit I’m a bit of a sucker for bands with a horn section! Good album, upbeat and much more than a one hit wonder. Will listen again. 4

Great album all the way through

This was a lot of fun.

With neverending gusto, chutzpah and bravado, Too-Rye-Ay is home to Dexy's Midnight Runners' most endearing hit and several of hidden gems that does more than expected in sweeping the listener off their feet. While not their greatest hour (that would be Don't Stand Me Down), it's perhaps their most assured and finest. Favorites: Let's Make This Precious, All in All (This One Last Wild Waltz), Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile), Plan B, Until I Believe in My Soul, Come on Eileen, Reminisce (Pt. 1)

Disco ochentero BRUTAL. Algo diferente. Sólo demasiado largo, te pierdes un poco entre tanta canción

Too-Rye-Ay by Dexys Midnight Runners (1982) I’m not a fan of Britpop, but Dexys Midnight Runners add a creative flair to the genre that makes for a truly enjoyable listen. For those who, like me, thought that Dexys Midnight Runners’ first album (Young Soul Rebels [1980]) was very good, well, this one is very gooder. To the prominent trombone and other horns, they added two violins, making their pop sound even more idiosyncratically inventive. Readers might be familiar with the big hit off this album, the closing track “Come On Eileen” (successful on both sides of the Atlantic), but if that’s all you know, you’re missing a lot. Their cover of Van Morrison’s “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile)” is even better than Morrison’s original (from his album Saint Dominic’s Preview [1972]). More splashy vocals, string backgrounds, elaborate horns, and a more open sound. The opening track “Celtic Soul Brothers” is exactly what is advertised. Scottish/Irish Celtic instrumental grounding with 60s Motown soul/R&B flavorings. It’s like The Pogues on a date with The Supremes (or, alternatively, Loreena McKennitt on a date with John Belushi—make your own suggestions! It’d be a fun party game). Now the lead vocal by Kevin Rowland is quirky (kind of a whiny David Bowie) and definitely not of high quality. But it is supremely interesting, almost as if he had a prior career as a punk rock frontman (he did—with The Killjoys in the late 70s). But Rowland and trombonist “Big” Jim Paterson are the creative geniuses behind the sound. And it’s a very good sound. With mobile bass lines, sassy horns, jazz interludes, female backing vocal ensemble, adjustable meter, along with occasional banjo, accordion, and tin whistle thrown in, the listener experiences an unexpected delight around every bend in the road. There’s a lot of good music on this album. It’s worth putting on the headphones and dancing in the living room (especially if your wife just left for two and a half weeks to visit your mother in law). 4/5

Really good album. Fun to listen to. Come on Eileen is one of the greatest songs ever

The Sax solo in Until I Believe in My Soul is a GEM! And getting Come on Eileen on a day Eileen Gu gets her thrid medal was a pretty pleasant coincidence xD

This took me back. It's a tape we played in the car all the time

This was a pleasant surprise from a band that I've only ever known as a one-hit-wonder. They have a great horn section on many of the tracks, and their cover of "Jackie Wilson Said" fits in well with the album. I listened to a version of an album with bonus tracks, which are great additions to the album. "Until I Believe in My Soul" could have been skipped, but I would come back to most of the tracks. If you like their one-hit "Come On Eileen" this album is worth checking out. I'm rounding up to 4 stars.

I figured that Dexys midnight runners were kind of a one-hit-wonder band. That was until I heard this album. This is a brilliant album that mix’s Celtic musical influences with soul and R&B. It is a really pleasant album to listen to. I particularly enjoyed 'Reminisce - Part 1' for its story like qualities and 'Jackie Wilson said' with its upbeat tune that’s catchy and very memorable. I feel like it’s a sort of 3.5 range so I’ll give it the benefit of doubt and round it up…

good songs: - the celtic soul brothers - let's make this precious - jackie wilson said - old - plan b

I picked this one out of all the ones I haven't listened to because I knew I'd enjoy it. Great album and 'come on eileen' is just a song that hits the fun button in my soul every time

Part of the fun novelty of "Come On Eileen" was the addition of a fiddle sound to pop music, and that is true throughout this album. What I didn't expect were the horn sections as well, plus piano, making for a very eclectic but fun sound. Kind of old timey, but definitely not old fashioned sounding. It's a shame this band is shorthand for "one hit wonder" in the US, since I think there is lots more to get to know and enjoy.

Other than Come On Eileen, I knew nothing of this album. It was good. The few tracks really appealed to me. I thought that I would really love this album. The instrumentation and vocals were excellent. Then as the album neared the end, the tracks were not as appealing and I found them difficult to listen to. The final Come On Eileen track was a rally back to my good side, but overall the album did slip to a 4 by the end.

Enjoyed it more than I expected but likely not enough to seek it out again.

Honestly, their songs all sound very similar. Does that mean they are bad? No way. Enjoyed the album!

Fun album! Lots of bangers. Fav tracks: Old, Let's Make This Precious

What a surprise! Of course I only knew the hitsingle "Come on Eileen" before listening to the album. I really enjoyed the whole thing. Great musical variety and entertaining artistic elements.

much better than I thought, proto-ska sound.

This was much better than I expected. Worth a repeat listen

Well of course you have one of the great 80’s tunes that led to one of the raunchiest halloween costumes ive ever seen. But this album is packed with great pop sensibilities and a lot more Celtic influence than I’d been expecting. There’s almost some Queen style harmonies at the start of “Old” Fav tracks: “Come On Eileen” “Celtic Soul” “Old”

"Come on Eileen" by far the best and most popular song but it was a fun album to listen to. Lead singer almost kind of sounds like Brandon Flowers from The Killers... well, Brandon sounds like him since he came later. 7/10.

We all know why this album is on here, but it was surprisingly enjoyable despite the one-hit wonder. Very energetic and fun plus can’t hate on come on Eileen. Fav songs: Jackie Wilson said, old, come on eileen

Enjoyed it! Never realised Jackie Wilson Said was by this band.

On first listen, while taking a pleasant walk through the park, I thought that this album was a confused schizophrenic mess. And it is. But then, while filling out some paperwork I really didn't want to have anything to do with, I gave it another listen. I get it now - a confused mess it may be, with a frustrating track arrangement and sound bouncing all over the place, but it's one hell of a fun album. You can start in a melancholy mood, but by the time the riff of Come On Eileen kicks in you'll have left that long behind. Standouts for me were Precious, Plan B, and of course the greatest wedding disco track of all time.

A couple of top quality songs on here, and would definitely listen to again. I love having some very happy music to bop along to on. I enjoyed it a lot, but it's a bit too eclectic an album for me to rate it 5/5.

It's good but it would be better if instead of "come on eileen" it was "come on guyleen"

Really enjoyable.

This is enjoyable… could’ve done with a little more attention on my part! I’ll revisit!

The instrumental was great. The singer’s voice could be a little annoying and sometimes sounded whinny. I appreciated hearing more than just their famous song. They do have depth.

Very Good album

Going to be worth revisiting

Eccentric and over the top but some sort of genius

Takes me back. Really great album. Kevin Rowland remains sadly unappreciated. Prefer the Young Soul Rebel era version of Dexy's. No matter.

Great album! From an era when pop music was approached with bags of integrity and charismatic songwriting! Upbeat, Northern soul influences but with a melancholy thread running through. I like it

Enjoyed this. Never really thought about checking them out as Come On Eileen is all anyone ever plays. I shall be returning to this.

Very enjoyabke

A true One hit wonder

a lot of the horn tunes are catchy and fun, but apparently not breakout hits like Eileen... their slower songs don't have enough gravitas to carry them

Very fun pop record, would recommend

I don't love how nearly half the songs on the album are not available on Spotify. That being said, I unironically love Come On Eileen and the songs I CAN listen to are upbeat, enjoyable, and moderate bangers.

I really liked this album. Maybe it is known by the one hit wonder 'Come on Eileen' but the whole album is awesome and tematically in sync with that song

I like the production and arrangements on this album better than their first. The horn section has a nice pop, the strings are great, especially in Celtic Soul Brothers and All in All, where the backup vocals too are amazing. I find the song-writing is on par with the first LP, but as a smash hit I’ll take Eileen over Geno any day.

I must have worn out my original copy of this album I played it so much in the 80s. It’s a big improvement over their prior release with some real cracking tracks including 2 great cover songs. Plus it’s also got Come on Eileen which is a classic. I’d give this a solid 3.5, but round up to 4 for old times sakes.

Great album! I haven´t heard it until yesterday. A lost jewell.

First song's instrumentals starts off strong, sets up for the rest of the album. Goddamn nice accompaniments. Smooth. Come on Eileen is a classic.

Enjoyed a lot more then I thought I would. I hear their influence in today alternative music

Did not expect the band behind Come On EIllen to sound so dynamic.

one hit wonder with come on eileen, but the rest of the album is decent. i've always loved the guy's voice.

Really dug it, thought the familiar one was coming around eventually and there it was with Come on Eileen

Really enjoyed listening to this. Come On Eileen is obviously the highlight, but it's actually a very cohesive album. Love the brass and woodwind in it. Can't believe Celtic Soul Brothers did not do as well as Come On Eileen, what a solid single

Great fun to tap and sing along to; could have done with some cuts towards the end.

Absolument dingue, Robwup je vais devoir te faire taire tes critiques musicales font honte à la France

A well produced, fun pop album. Friday feels are real.

Loved this, nice bass, nice strings, vocals - everything. A real party record

Completely unique sound, utilizing big band, banjo, some strings, it honestly feels like a nightmare to play live. But the studio album? Perfectly campy. A show within itself. Just a ton of fun. There's even a little refrain they do of the main melody at the end of "Old" as if they're changing the stage for side b, haha. Reminds me a little bit of Supertramp's Crime of the Century in it's framing and whatnot. I think it's a very well-done album, but something will always keep me from absolutely loving this big theatrical albums. No matter how good, it always comes up a little short. Oh, and Come On Eileen is the ultimate white-people jam, so credit for that.
