Fav song: Ace of Spades

Lemmy was one of kind, and his band knew exactly who they were and excelled at it. What rock music is more fun than this?

I've always liked the title song of the album, so it was interesting to hear the rest of the album. I liked (We Are) The Roadcrew and Fire Fire the best of the songs I hadn't heard before. The album's not my usual style but it was a refreshing change.

Quite enjoyed this, a bit of a change of pace from what I usually listen to

First time I have listened to an entire Motorhead album. Every track was a good one my favourite tracks were Ace Of Spades, We Are The Road Crew and Shoot You In The Back. I thought I was listening to a remake of Alice Cooper's School's Out when Jailbait came on the intro is very similar. Overall a great album.

Another band I’ve really been meaning to get into Title track is amazing (of course) and some of the others on this album actually manage to live up to the expectations set by it (Reptile, Live to Win) Nothing more to say really, it’s just a damn fun metal experience Favourite tracks: Ace of Spades, Love Me Like a Reptile, Live to Win, The Chase…

Hard-driving. Run through a freaking wall guitar and bass. Might not be good for my blood sugar but damn I could rage!

Great frontman, heavy sound.

Fantastic album - Especially considering it was released in 1980. I’m obviously not going to put it on repeat, but I now understand why they’re so famous and influential.

Fast and fiery. “Jailbait” hasn’t aged well (to put it mildly) and I started to lose interest during side 2, but still 4 stars from me.

Pretty good

High octane proto-thrash metal (with hard rock influences) that makes up for the missing variability with pure energy. 3.5/5

I don't spend too much time listening to Motorhead, because my personal enjoyment of listening to a full album isn't as much as many other artists I'd prefer to listen to, at any given time. However, their classic songs like "Ace of Spades" are great, and I do enjoy listening to them from time-to-time. Also, the impact of Motorhead is so huge, and it is very easy to hear why, when listening to the album. Their brand of Rock'n'roll was very fresh, hard driving, and simultaneously upbeat and heart-pumping in its aggressiveness.

stand out track - (We Are) The Roadcrew

Punk energy and frenzy combined with metal. 36 minutes of glorious melodic noise.

Så blev der skruet op til 11! Mangler mere Lemmy i mit liv. Rip

Favorite Tracks: Ace of Spades, Love Me Like a Reptile, Shoot You in the Back, Live to Win, Fast and Loose, (We Are) The Roadcrew, Jailbait, The Chase Is Better Than the Catch

Not a big metal fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed this cover to cover.

Some solid heavy rock despite an icky song 'Jailbait'

The image on this album cover is so evocative for the sound that you hear. I want to get in a fight at a bar now.

Adrenalina a tope. Un supermegahit. Un 4.

Great guitar work

the only card I need!!

Imagine if ZZ Top came from the UK, cranked up the distortion, sped up, and influenced a slew of punk, metal, and hardcore bands. A big fun, dumb hard rock album that has some raw production, which sounds way better coming from a pair of headphones than from the car stereo. The first half is stronger than the second half with a few exceptions. The weaker songs have way better live versions.

Can see how it broke new ground and influenced the next decade or two of speed metal. Lyrically a little problematic at times, LOL, but Lemmy’s distinctive delivery is magnetic and the band’s breakneck pace is unrelenting

Without the gross song “jailbait” this might be a perfect album.

Now, I may be going out on a limb here, but I find Mr Kilmister to be one of this worlds most underestimated lyricists. Expecially in tracks like "Road Crew", they are clever, witty, have a rhythm and meter that makes them (to me) proper poetry. And although I know it's not on this album, any man who can find a rhyme for and indeed include the word 'parallelogram' in any song is deserved of high praise indeed. Musically I guess it is somewhat simplistic, but it comes together well. Again this is an album I possess, bought mainly because it was one that I thought at the time it was one I ought to own, but I found myself liking it. A high 4 for me

As a rock music fan, what’s not to love? This was out long before I gravitated towards rock music, but most of the bands I love were in some way inspired by Lemmy and Motörhead. This album is just great. Simple punk rock and roll. Title track is just iconic but there’s real energy throughout.

The fact that Lemmy and co didn't class themselves as Heavy Metal, but thought of themselves as just Rock N' Roll, is a bonus for me, as that might have penalised the score 😂. Don't think I've heard anything except for the title track Ace of Spades, you can feel the energy that they must have put into their live shows, in a different life I could have been into them. (We are) The Road Crew and Fire Fire are excellent for their use of wah wah, a winner for me. 5 out of 5 for amphetamine consumption while recording and performing the album. However I'll give it a high 3 or a low 4 for its originality (at the time) and that I actually quite enjoyed listening to it.

Angry and energetic. All time classic!

Mortorhead is definitely best enjoyed in moderation. Although the rock n roll riffs were always killer. Lemmy only had one note under his belt when singing and that's all you got. So enjoy it but you will realize you don't know where one song ends and the next begins as they all sound pretty similar

Classic hard rock album, very popular as it coincided with new wave of British heavy metal. Motorhead sound superb throughout, courtesy of some great production. Side one is particularly strong, with Ace of Spades and We Are the Roadcrew stand outs. Second side not quite as good although The Chase is Better than the Catch is decent

It's interesting how some bands manage to have a singular sound, and yet each song feels unique in some way. Meanwhile, other bands have a singular sound and each song kinda feels like the same thing just with different words. Well, with Motorhead, it's the latter - at least on this album. The only song I knew of theirs was "Ace of Spades" so I enjoyed hearing it, only to realize that's pretty much all they bring to the table. Still, it was a nice meal. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but since we don't have that option, I'll be kind and round them up to a 4.

I'm not fond of his voice. Gabi and Jackson ruined that for me lol They were playing Ace of Spades on guitar hero on time, over and over and over. Whoa are they British!?

Lemmy displays some great rock vocals on this album. Before this, I would never have likely listened to this album or this band. Metal isn't a genre I know very well. The closest I've come to this genre is GNR's Appetite For Destruction or Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality. This genre isn't how many think it would be. The electric guitars sound very good. All the members sound very good at what they do. Lyrically, the album isn't too intricate. It's not got the lyrical ability of Freewheelin Bob Dylan or Illmatic or Bringing It All Back Home, but it's good enough. This is a better album than many classic albums (Never Mind The Bollocks, In Utero, Nevermind) which is a plus. The songs that stand out to me are: Ace Of Spades, (We Are) The Road Crew, Fire Fire and The Hammer. Overall a very good album. A very cohesive album. Would reccomend. 🌕🌕🌕🌕/🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

OG Thrash

I don’t have much to add, Lemmy forever. A-

This is so fucking good, but 'Jailbreak' is just extremely uncomfortable.

Let’s try to forget “Jailbait” ever happened. No band is more quintessential rock’n’roll than Motörhead and no person has ever breathed the genre the same way Lemmy did. An absolute classic with one major, horribly aged (it might even have been bad during the release) hiccup.

Muuten antaisin tälle 3, mut nimibiisi on niin hyvää jytää, että pakko antaa yksi ekstra.

2 askia päivässä ja pataässä, sillä pärjää elämässä.

Really surprised how much I enjoyed this! Never been a big motorhead guy, so I thought I would only like Ace of Spades and the rest would be meh for me, but if anything I was digging the other tracks more having never heard em before. The other songs all did kind of bleed together so I don't have specific comments but this general vibe was fun.

While I can not say there was a ton of musical variety, on this album I can say that most of it kicked ass. Like AC/DC, Motorhead gives you a serving of straight up rock and roll complete with thrashing riffs and iconic guitar solos. I do have to take off some points for the sexism in the lyrics, were a bit much for me once I started paying attention to the lyrics (and obviosuly for "jailbait" cuz..gross). These guitar parts were undeniably fire though and I feel like their show would have been a lot of fun to see. Nothing very complex here, but sometimes simple is ok in rock and roll!

For a record that came out in 1980, it's quite impressive to hear such speed and such energy in a hard rock record. They really changed the game with that one, as you can clearly hear that it paved the way to what would become speed/thrash metal with bands like Slayer and Metallica. So while it's highly influencial and it rocks as all hell, I gotta say that it's not really something I want to return to very often. I still give it a 4 because it rips.

A classic for the denim and leather enjoyers of this world! My ears smells like beer, sweat and motor oil after listening to this.

Badass metal album with the unique delivery of Lemmy. A true classic.

That sweet, sweet Lemmy Rickenbacher bass.

Good ol' Lemmy!

Ace of Spades just reminds me of Tony Hawk, haha. Overall a solid album, it doesn't hit hard or make me bounce around in my chair, but it's a good listen.

One of those albums that was beyond influential on so many artists. The music is fast and hard and Lemmy sounds like he smoked tons of cigarettes right before recording. One negative note I have for the album is: WTF is up with “Jailbait.”

Just hard hard hitting hard rock start to finish. Every song is a banger in this album.

Fun. crunchy. fast. makes me want to kick stuff in a good way.

pretty rockin baby. dirty sexy rock n rolll hell ya let us gooooo. every member is giving their all. love the dry nuanced drums. the whiskey soaked vocals as they say. very cool. good lyrics. oh yaaa

Whoa Nelly! Moorhead rules. 12 tracks that just blow by. Shits fast and rocks. There isn't much more to ask for. Riffs are there. Lemmys vocals are rough but damn they fit so nice. 4*

THE ACE OF SPADES!!! What a song. I've never really listened to Motorhead so I'm excited. Mr. Motorhead must have chronically sore vocal cords, because his voice is fairly guttural in a good way. A lot of these songs sound the same, but they all shred, so I'm not complaining. A Motorhead concert seems like it would be a real clambake!

This album is filled to the brim with power chords, face melting solos, and Lemmy's distinct raspy voice. Everything goes so well together and makes me want to punch through a wall. Obviously Ace of Spades is an all-time classic metal song. The Chase Is Better Than The Catch was my second favorite as it felt the most unique. All of the other songs had very similar sound, but I am not mad about it at all. This album fux \m/

Ace of Spades immediately makes me think of Tony Hawk. Never really listened to much Motörhead so excited to jump in. I really like the instrumentals and the lead singers voice. Sounds very straining on his vocal chords but damn it sounds good. The beginning of Jailbait sounds like another song and I can't put my finger on it. The Chase is Better than the Catch is an awesome song. I really liked this album. Some classic rock n roll. Give me more.

I love me some good old-fashioned rock and roll. Nice guitar soloing!

Full throttled rock and roll, often imitated, rarely bettered. As usual, points docked for noncery (Jailbait in particular)

You know I'm born to lose And gambling's for fools But that's the way I like it, baby I don't want to live forever And don't forget the joker Pushing up the ante I know you got to see me Read 'em and weep The dead man's hand again I see it in your eyes Take one look and die The only thing you see You know it's gonna be The Ace of Spades So fucking good. 4/5

great guitar and drum work, its also short and sweet, i don't like when albums are 30 hours for no reason with bunch of filler songs that don't mean anything

It's Motörhead with Lemmy! The title track "Ace of Spades" defined a genre, but the other tracks sound pretty sameish to me.

Motörhead has always held a bit of a reputation for ascending genre. They weren't quite heavy metal rockstars, and weren't quite hardcore punks. Lemmy knew how to lay down a killer riff on his bass that always kept the songs sounding full and heavy. Fast Eddie could shred with the rest of them, but could also back up Lemmy's bass riffs in lockstep. Philthy kept a perfect balance of sloppy devil-may-care drumming while also nailing the hits with the rest of the band. As a unit, they are an unstoppable force of sound. Loud, brash, and intense as all hell.

Great energy. Ace of spades is overplayed here, was pleasantly surprised the whole album is pretty solid

Good record.

rock and roll with a punk swagger. galloping instruments behind the whiskey soaked / smoke charred vocals of legendary frontman lemmy kilmister. the only band both rock and punk fans can agree on, it has been said. just fast, quality rock and roll. highlights: “ace of spades”, “fast and loose”, “dance”.

This would be higher, but the lackluster production and vocals bring it down for me. Still, some pretty awesome riffs and hooks throughout the record.

This album DRIVES. Nonstop movement and motivation through constant guitar work and shouted vocals. I like that they refused to be labeled a metal band, and were instead a "Rock 'n' Roll" band Not something I want to listen to all of the time, but it's a damn good rock album

My husband bought this CD for me a while back thinking I'd like the title track and he was right. The rest of the album is kind of more of the same so it's a good thing I like it. I found this much more enjoyable than some of the metal we've heard. I did skip Jailbait. Nobody needs that.

RRRAGAGAHHHGAGARRAGAGAHHHAGAGAGAGAGGAGAGAGAGGEHRRR

Oh hell yes

Lemmy is alright

I already knew Motorhead for Ace of Spades, but didn't realize how many other good tracks they had. I had always thought of them as a one hit wonder, and am pretty shocked to find they have a really robust catalogue. Really vibing with this band. More importantly, the fact that they did this in the 80s is shocking. I thought they were a 90s band.

So, this a great album. Driving beats, thunderous bass, and riffs for days. If you like metal, punk, or space rock, chances are you already know this album. The lyrics though… are unfortunate. For instance, in the opening lines of the song Jailbait (you read that right) Lemmy, who was 35 when this album came out, sings “teenage baby, you’re a sweet young thing, still tied to mommy’s apron strings, I don’t even dare to ask your age, it’s enough to know you’re here backstage…” So an otherwise great album, with inescapably bad lyrics.

By comparison to the previous album, this one hits it for six. The opener is (for better or worse) by leaps and bounds the stand out track - energetic and head-banging stupid shit that was always kind-of timeless. I feel like it's almost as if that song always existed, and everyone in the genre ever since has been trying to replicate it. I've heard so many band at the Tote and Retreat front bars that would love to have come up with half the songs on this record. Not every track is a knockout, but I'm not too fussed. As cheesy and shallow (and kinda weird) a lot of the lyricism is on this record, it's much easier to stomach than the other shit that came yesterday (i.e. Panama). There's a lot to like on this record, and I feel forgiving of the usual critical drawbacks of the genre. I had fun and thought this was kind of a cracker in a style I haven't much dived into before. A decent four. Fave track: Ace of Spades

My aching speakers

La prima, title song, capolavoro. Le altre perdono un po'

I am not the biggest metal fan out there, but even I couldn't help but bang my head along with these rockers! Fast-paced fun from start to finish (except for the cringing during "Jailbait").

Leaving aside the extremely dubious lyrics and general themes, this is brilliant. Admittedly they pretty much all sound the same - it's Ace of Spades rewritten 10 times, but I loved it. Played the whole album back to back solidly for almost 3 hours. However, it can't have five stars because of the rape/drugs/underage sex/general mysogyny.

The raw power and energy on the album is insane. Heavy metal isn't usually my cup of tea but I really enjoyed listening to this record today. Perhaps I was in the mood for it today more than usually, but I liked it. It's a consistent album throughout, pure rock - great stuff!

classic

loveee like a reptileeeeeee (in a hot way)

8/10 - Heavy and really enjoyable

Above average heavy metal, with some creative high-points. Keeps between the lines and doesn't drift into other lanes. Well-produced. Great to play while drag racing.

I enjoyed the music, but obviously the themes are pretty outdated at this point. Still fun hard rocking music when you don't dig too deep.

Can’t get any more rock and roll than this - blazing through its entire length with nary a breath to spare it’s a wild ride in every sense. Lemmy’s pumping bass and gravel-sleaze singing is just perfect and all songs are about gambling drinking and women. Maybe the latter is kind of it’s failing - it’s on the misogynistic side but what can you expect of Motörhead? You cannot really expect them to be nuanced about gender equality. Anyway super strong Side A, tapering Side B with a side of creep in Jailbait - but just because it so is what it is - can’t help but rate it 4 stars

Awesome

Playing catch up, and so have just done yesterday's choice "The Carpenters" followed by this one. Ha. The neighbours must think I'm having a breakdown. Much prefer Lemmy to Karen.

7.5/10 generic ahh trucker dude metal

Banger!

Kinda samey but I’m the way that you wanna just drive around with it blaring

I am not the greatest fan of Heavy rock/metal (except Led Zep of course). However I do have a massive soft spot for AC/DC and Motorhead, and this is is ane axcellent album from the definitive version of the band.

Maintenant, écoute Ace of Spades.

I love the song Ace of Spades, but I haven't actually listened to the full album before. This album has a perfect blend of metal and punk. The lyrics aren't going to win any poetry awards and some of the songs have not aged well (Jailbate, yikes). If you are looking for an album with depth and emotion, this isn't it. However, if you are looking for a fun and energetic album to get you pumped while dealing with idiot coworkers, this hits the spot. It will instantly lift your mood.

I like heavy metal im the 80 iger and 90iger. So it s very good to me to hear ir again......I remember the parties abd friends ; ) *

Starts off with an absolute bang (Ace of Spades) but the rest of the album doesn't quite measure up. Still an above average album

It’s a classic enough said

I only knew Ace of Spades before listening to this album. Although I think this is still the best track, there is some seriously good stuff on here. I really like I Love me like a reptile and Fire Fire. Jailbait is a great track as well, if you ignore the dubious lyrics at least. It does sound a lot alike and listening to the whole album from start to finish is a lot of Lemmy's voice to listen to, but all with all I still think this is a great album with some really outstanding tracks on it.

Much better than I expected.

Ace Of Spades- 8.1 Love Me Like a Reptile- 6.8 Shoot You in The Back- 6.2 Live to Win- 6.0 Fast and Loose- 7.2 (We Are) The Roadcrew- 7.5 Fire Fire- 7.5 Jailbait- 6 (HUH?!?!?) Dance- 7.3 Bite The Bullet- 6.4 The Chase Is Better Than the Catch- 7.9 The Hammer- 8.0 Dirty Love- 8.6 Good guitars, not a fan of the lyrics

classic. always loved it. wouldnt give it 5 though. solid 4.5/5

Lauantaiaamun siivouslevy. Kain: ”Ihan ookoo .”(Käy vaihtamassa Motörhead-paidan päälle.) Mauri: ”Tosi äijää.” (Klió kiukuttelee eikä suostu kommentoimaan.) Athanasía: En oo koskaan ollut täysin varma, onko tää tehty täysin vakavissaan vai ei. Toivon ja luotan, että vakavissaan. On tää hyvä.

Rock n roll n rocket fuel. The grizzly vocals and in you face attitude makes for a fun listen, this the must listen album for this band.

100% pure f*uckin rock, R.I.P. Lemmy

gött köttigt

This is some real good old heavy rock. Only heard ace of spades off this before which is a total classic. This album and Motörhead clearly influenced a lot of thrash metal that would follow. Really good album did come close to full stars but some of the lyrics so just let it down from being a true masterpiece.

Good album, great start and great vibe. The energy is nice but something seems missing, nothing stood out for me. I did not catch any great great instrumentals (like solo part or else). Still jammed hard. Small 4/5

heavy metal at its finest

A classic and one of their best. Lemmy's voice is just perfection for their music.

Half the points go to the band -- an improbable success for 3 (the classic albums lineup) ne'er do wells. one look at phil taylor, fast eddie, and lemmy and of course they are in motorhead -- true scuzballs. Lemmy gets points for playing a rickenbacker a' la McCartney and overdriving it. Also points for being a roadie for Jimi Hendrix and love of Little Richard. Lots not to like about him too but I imagine he would probably be nice to anyone as long as you aren't a dick go people. Anyway, I suppose the review should be about the music -- hard, fast, loud, juvenile, and clearly the result of drug-addled brains - not 'good' by any definition but just right nonetheless.

It was nice very fun

Quick and dirty metal from 1980. The band is legendary and you can see in their style why. The music fits very well the cover with this Western-cowboy-meets-biker and it is full of energy. Unfortunately, listening to the album in full means that at some point the speed and style feels a bit too familiar, to some extent formulaic. The title track is a riot, I really enjoyed it. While an important addition to the genre, I'm not sure I'll come back to it very frequently as my predilection lies towards slower/calmer rock or heavier/faster metal. Motorhead lies in a space in between that doesn't tick all the boxes for me. Genre: Metal, 80s Metal. Year:1980. Deluxe version is 27 tracks and 1h 27m long.

Really good album, but I guess not all the tracks are up the standard of the title track and some of the others.

Motorhead.. was soll man da noch sagen?

Great album of Motörhead. "Ace of Spades" is his better song.

Top notch hard rock album. Stands the test of time!

Hard, fast and fun. I just wish there was a little bit more variety in there.

I had really low expectations after the last album, but this album is actually really fun! I was head banging a little bit on the train and some of the guitar solos are really novel and interesting. It’s not totally my vibe so I can’t give it a five though

Very cool 😎!

I love the energy, the album just kicks off with the title track and then thunders along for a solid half hour of tracks. I don't think I've ever actually listened to a whole Motörhead album before, but if this one is any indication, I'll definitely be listening to more in the future.

Pretty good, some peak motorhead for sure

Adrenalina a tope. Un supermegahit. Un 4.

Everything kind of sounds the same but I liked it much more than expected.

Am I a Motorhead fan? Maybe I'm a Motorhead fan. This is the second album of theirs on this list and... I mean, I like the whole thing. So I think I'm a Motorhead fan. I'm not a Motorhead superfan, but I'd say I'm definitely a fan, for all the reasons I enumerated in my last Motorhead review, linked here: [no link was found]

hell yeah, this album kicks ass. I've listened to 4 more Motorhead albums today. They're such an interesting band because they really defy categorization with other bands of the time. They got lumped into the NWOBHM but they're just... different. And awesome

Ballsbreaker

Soundtrack for moto riding

Classic metal!

For the casual music listener, this probably very average sounding. But as a fan of rock, this is as fun as rock music gets.

While this album is full of songs that are raw, sounding the same and are hard to understand, there is just something very undeniably rock and roll about it. Hard to put it into words but the songs rock!

THE ACE OF SPADESSSS, THE ACE OF SPADESSSS

I would not have thought that I would enjoy this album, and having listened to it, I'm not exactly sure why I enjoy this album. I do enjoy it however. It has a very consistent sound without sounding repetitive. Ace of Spades is an all time banger. Well worth a listen 4/5

Awesome. Every song is great. Wish it was easier to hear the bass

Will be the first listen for me. Only really heard the title track and the Triple H entrances. Need to listen to more Hawkwind as well. I mean it was never going to be a surprise was it. Loads of amazing, meaty guitar solos. Jailbait, well, yeah..hmm. Listening to an album like this first 40 years after its already influenced your musical tastes vicariously for years, can sometimes be a touch underwhelming. So, not blown away for those reasons. But there's no doubting it's a fantastic album.

The pleasure was to play.

don't forget the joker

Classic Motorhead.

When I hear Lemmy sing I just want to grab him a warm cup of tea and some throat medicine. Maybe a soothing milkshake.

What a cover. Pretty good music too, obviously knew Ace of Spades but The RoadCrew was phenomenal

badass

Lemmy is a nonce

Never listened to Motorhead but was familiar with them. Not the hugest fan of Lemmy's voice but the music makes up for it. Good old fashioned rock and roll fun. Lyrics are a bit amateurish at points.

Motorhead is one of a kind. Everyone knows the titular track, but the whole album exceeds expectations. Lemmy is a unique vocalist, inspired by the punk movement, raspy and confrontational fitting with the wild theme in the raw sound and arrogant badass lyrics (although now may appear dated and a bit silly, not to mention the infamous "Jailbreak"). The sound is a step forward from the glam metal and heavy metal of the era, fast and hard serving as a precursor to thrash metal, yet still melodic and accessible to contemporary audiences. The songs themselves are short and fast, with enough variety and emphasis on the guitar solos, impossible to get sick of by the time the next one plays. That being said, most of the tracks don't stand out, although several do compete with the anthematic power of the titular track. Yes, the catchiness and beautiful melody of "Jailbreak" is one of them, but damn those controversial lyrics. TIL Lemmy was in Hawkwind, which is coincidentally the album assigned to me the next day. I can't believe how innovative and consistent this guy is... people should definitely be talking about this legend more.

This album suffers the same problem as “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for me. The big hit, the most well-known song is first. The other stuff is good, but not at the level of that first song. Still, it runs right over and through you because LEMMY. Great, headbanging stuff, but a slight letdown after that first song. The dead man’s hand again…

I only knew Ace of Spades coming in (who doesn't? a classic) but this was a really solid album. Feels like the segue between Sabbath's heavy metal and metal of the 80's like Metallica. I read that they saw themselves as a rock and roll band and I totally get that. If you listen, they're not that much different than a rock band like ZZ Top. A little heavier, a little faster, but similar elements like a rock melody underneath. Oh, and ZZ Top's cringeworthy lyrics. Case in point the song Jailbait - "I don't dare to even ask your age, it's enough to know your here backstage." Yikes. File that alongside Pearl Necklace. It was a different era back then. I'm just going to enjoy the pounding guitars and drums and pretend I don't hear the lyrics.

Genre: Heavy Metal 4/5 Ah, Motörhead. I appreciate Ace of Spades being my first Heavy Metal album in the book that I've received, and it's a torrent of heavy playing from all instruments, and the man who crafted the perfect heavy metal scream-singing that makes this genre what it is: Lemmy. Bass extraordinaire, Lemmy, is the main man responsible for what makes Motörhead's sound so recognizable, as well as cutting-edge. The three members of this Motörhead lineup have all sadly left this mortal world, but what they left behind in terms of material is a body of work every rock musician would be proud of. Of course, the title track and intro, Motörhead's most famous song, is a tour-de-force of guitars, drums, and full-throated bellows, regaling us with tales of gambling and debauchery. The rest of the album plays out nearly like a power pop album. Power chords a-plenty, melodic riffs, and some surprisingly happy jams. The lyrics might tell a different, less happy story, but the music is a blast, and an absolute joy to listen to. Feel good and rock the fuck out.

4.5, I want to give it a 5 but it's just not quite there

More compelling than I expected, really driving rhythm and blistering guitar riffs. Let’s turn a blind eye to the lyrics of Jailbait while also fully appreciating the lyrical genius of Ace of Spades - a random collection of gambling related clichés

Fun hectic album. Pretttttty problematic

Shocked at how good it was, particularly since I wasn’t found of No Sleep til Hammersmith.

Ace ♠️

Not a huge metal fan, but this album rocks and seems pretty important in the foundation of many metal and thrash movements.

4.3 - Damn, no wonder people love Lemmy!!! This album feels so rock-solid. Leather jackets and pants, motorcycles, and sluts. Loud, energetic, positive, in charge, getting laid.

The force behind Lemmy's voice on nearly every cut is nuts: It sounds like he's absolutely forcing the air out, yet the result is anything but weakened. The opening of the record was energetic but quite by-the-numbers; Around Fast and Loose the music became more urgent. Motörhead are great at what they do.

Fast pace road anthems. Heavy, raw and non-stop. Doesn't deviate much from the main sound but it's not a problem with all the energy involved. Would be a five but there's definitely things on this album that go beyond questionable now.

Doesn't quite have that classic legacy for me as it's reputation suggests it should. Solid record but probably doesn't squeeze into my top 3 Motörhead albums.

One of the all time best hard rock albums, obviously

3.5, but I’ll round up. Big dumb fun and not pretending to be anything else

The music you want playing when you have violent diarrhea. In the best way. Best Tracks: Ace of Spades; Love Me Like a Reptile; (We Are) The Roadcrew

8/10 pretty good rock but some of the lyrics were a little too sus

vitu awesome

81. Ace of Spades - Motörhead 27 tracks. I've never really connected with them because of Lemmies coarse vocals but there is lots to like. Surprisingly, the vocals seem quite clear to me now in comparison to modern rock, the lyrics of which are often unintelligible. 4/5

Lemmy is God

A bit samey, which isn't necessarily a bad thing when the opening track is Ace of Spades but it didn't achieve greatness through its lack of variation. And as someone else pointed out, Jailbait has some really problematic lyrics. Very enjoyable though.

A fun, high energy album. Although the songs sounded fairly similar. 1 recognized song

Liked it. Reminded me of the scene in Grosse Pointe Blank

Decent metal, good riffs, grooves, and drumming. I enjoyed this album more than I’ve enjoyed most metal albums. The chord changes are more interesting and throw some seventh chords in there too which gives an almost Hendrix like quality to some of the phrasing. Jailbait was completely unnecessary.

Excellent! I had never listened to a whole album in one sitting from Motörhead before and I'll listen to this one again and again

Despite Jailbait, this album has great raw gritty energy, that is certainly highlighted by the title track but also is carried through on nearly everything else. Road crew also stands out. Lemmy's voice is perfect for this.

Fantastic metal, but something about Lemmy's voice just bugs me. All those cigarettes did a number on him.

Rating: 7/10

Wish Ace of Spades wasn’t the first song because it’s leagues above the rest of the album. That said, the other stuff is pretty good if you’re in that early speed metal mood. Just don’t listen to the lyrics. Hot crap some it it. Especially Jailbait, I don’t know if that was accepted in its era but oof that’s cringey now. This is right between at 3 and 4 for me. I’ll let the title track push it to 4. Incidentally, Ace of Spades is the best taco on Torchy’s Tacos secret menu. If you happen to be anywhere near a torchy’s, check it out.

Got a soft spot for Motorhead, similar to with Black Sabbath. Not just UK band, but local lads from Stoke. Tunes are nuts too, appreciate the high energy. Seems ahead of its time for early 80s too. 4/5

A smoothed escapade for the listeners, despite the vocals being fairly unshifting . Some cracking tracks

Betetr than I expected although some disturbing lyric in "JailbaiT"

Solid rock. Motörhead had one speed: accelerated. But it's entertaining & simple and totally re-listenable.

Definitely had my doubts about this one, because I've never liked Lemmy's voice much. But the music is rock solid, straightforward, fun. It's a good album I enjoyed listening to.

Good one, but quite static

Shows the power of a really good drummer.

A truly great hard rock album. Love me like a reptile became an instant favourite

Much better than expected, great album +

Saufen, Speed und unterwegs sein: We Are The Roadcrew! Für mich: 3,7

A classic. Got a bit repetitive but overall enjoyed it. 4*

Another tough one. Sneaks a low 4.

I love the fun catchy guitar riffs and choruses throughout the project. It was short concise each song was 2-3 minutes which was nice easy listening. 8/10

Classic album overall

It's Motorhead at their finest.

This album rocks. Amazing guitar work and drumming. Nuff said. Pedo song brings it down a bit though.

Bad ass. Though the mixing doesn't sound too great since sometimes it's hard to hear certain instruments, like the drums. But the great overpowering riffs make up for that and it definitely has plenty of great 'bar in the desert' vibes.

Man as much as I respect Motorhead and their influence on genres of music I like a lot more than the band themselves (namely, prototypical forms of extreme metal, especially that of black metal) I have never actually sat through an entire Motorhead album. It's that thing again where I don't really find any affinity in the kind of blues rock Motorhead tends to reference a lot. But I would be absolutely daft to not at least give this one a go. Three tracks in and honestly I'm sold. This shit fucking rips and I regret never getting into it during the peak of my interest in this style of rock music. It's not ultra fast, there's no cave man riffs and shrieking, not much darkness overall, which were all prerequisites for my interest in metal overall, but maybe I've just gotten to the age where I can look past my original tastes in metal and appreciate it for what it is. I think maybe what I missed from a lot of music in this vein was that it never sounded dangerous to me, and this album feels absolutely dangerous and swaggering.

This thing just goes hard non-stop for 36 minutes. the lyrics are maybe the weakest part by being either very corny, or problematic (jailbait). Everything else is killer, lemmy’s voice is one of a kind and this has some of the best guitar work I’ve heard in a long time

Dia três. Meio corpo dentro, meio pé fora. O balanço é precário, o som traz certezas. O soslaio vira norma. ALL MISTAKES ARE MADE IN ALL CAPS. Estou a marcar uma posição perante o mundo. MotA: Fast and Loose "If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man"

mooi. classic. RIP Lemmy

THE ACE OF SPADES

Strong opening. Great instrumental. Disc 2 is mid.

the voice lmao, never appealed to me

5* for the title track 4* for the album as a whole \m/

Good riffs and Remy leading it with his fun vocals. High energy stuff thats consistent throughout

I love the sound and the energy of Motorhead's music. I find that I mostly don't know what they are singing about, but I wonder how much it matters. Love the guitar solos.

very good music. love the ace of spades and all of the other songs. only reason its not a 5 star is because theres too many versions of the same songs

Mood: Fuck it, I don't wanna live forever.

The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades

Great hard rock record, with 2 anthems and a bunch of solid strong tracks.

very motorhead..... All very ace of spadesy.

Realistically, a three star album at best, but I have a big soft spot for Motorhead so I'm giving it four. Fave track - "Ace of Spades", natch

Awesome album and a great change of pace from yesterdays stinker. Love it!

I don't think I had actually listened to a Motorhead album before, they're so fun and so intense. I think I understand why people like to talk about Lemmy now.

Pumped I finally dug into this one. Was great for a Friday too!

British metal. So good.

Really enjoyed the first album. Sounds a lot like ZZ Top. Couldn't really get to the second album. The heavy guitar and drums just was relentless.

Some great tunes

Badass

First one of these that I've immediately put back on as it's finished. Every track is similar but different enough for it not to grate. Heavier than stuff I'd usually listen to, but I'm into it.

37 Minuten ausgezeichnete Unterhaltung, schnörkellose Rockmusik zum Mitnicken. Hätte man (also: ich) mal früher drauf kommen können. Shoot You in The Back. Ich liebte es sofort!

Great stuff.

Wikipedia says this is "speed metal" which makes sense as every song felt like it was being delivered at 100mph. Excellent

DRIVING GUITARS TO GET ME GOING IN THE MORNING

mid everything sounds the same

hadn't heard of "speed metal" before, but it fits; these songs have a very fast tempo

3.5/5. Fuck yes

Sånt otroligt ös, RIP Lemmy

Fedt album - masser af energi og power

Spotify. Fave song “ Ace of Spades”. This was pretty good listen. 3.75

The same song for 36 minutes, which if you like the guitar tone and Lemmy's signature macho voice, then hey not a bad deal.

1/11 Hard album, love the cover. Standout Tracks: Ace of Spades, Fast and Loose, (We Are) The Roadcrew, Jailbait, Emergency

classic heavy metal!

This album sounded like Ace of Spades 12 times in a row with a little statutory lust thrown in to spice it up. All that shit-talking aside, I didn't hate this!

A: inte helt min genre av musik. Stundvis helt vibe men tyckte alla låtar lät helt lika. Whatevaaa 2/5 D: Dom hade bra meno.

There are so many hard partying, hard riffing hard rock albums I've defended here. But you gotta draw the line somewhere.

High energy, fast riffs and a front man like no other

Hard driving, straight forward rock. Not bad.

Okay classic heavy metal

I don't like this as much as I should. Driving bass, good riffs, lyrics about fucking. A bit boring though.

I can take or leave Motorhead – whilst I recognise their status as a classic band in the speed metal/heavy metal pantheon, I feel they are a singles band at best and I don't really like Lemmy's vocals. Revisiting this album has done little to alter my opinion, as I feel the second half is a marked drop-off in quality from the highlights of the first. The vocals quickly began to grate and tracks began feeling like lesser imitations of a similar formula.

Meh. Not a big fan of Motörhead. Despite loving metal music, I never quite got the cult surrounding Lemmy, maybe because I wasn't exposed to it early enough. For me, they were always just another greasy hard-rock band (as they've always claimed themselves) - the leathery aesthetic, the booze-and-broads general themes and Lemmy's voice are pure roadhouse / biker bar material, and while I can definitely enjoy a couple of songs, a full album bores me quickly. It didn't age well, and I have a hard time taking it seriously. Ace of Spades is pretty good Motörhead - mean and lean, with fast riffs and dumb lyrics that absolutely do the job. But it gets repetitive after a while, and I doubt I'll listen again. 6/10

Ace of Spades gets mentioned way too often as Motörhead’s best album, but for me, Overkill is by far their absolute banger. This one is still a blast from start to finish, but it’s also exhausting. In the end, Motörhead’s sound and Lemmy’s voice don’t have much range, so after a while it all starts to feel a bit samey.

My favorite Motorhead album, probably thanks to THPS3.

I’m just motoring on ahead on the list with a bunch of boring, repetitive junk

Meh-music was in your face & over fast. Vocals still rough

Solid album. True Classic. Lenny's grit just makes it a classic in it's own right.

Not quite sure about the song "Jailbait and I just can't wait". Maybe that one could have been left on the cutting room floor rather darlings. It's a cohesive album (some may call samey) which is mostly nice and easy to listen to. Doesn't outstay it's welcome

The title track has to be one of the greatest rock songs of all time. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it, it remains monumentally good - it just thunders along and it blows me away every time. Sadly, nothing else on this record comes anywhere near it. How could it? If they'd put Ace of Spades on it ten times, I'd consider it a great album but the rest of this record really is just guff. And the lyrics are appalling. But none of it matters, because Ace of Spades is on it.

Solid. A lot of nice up tempo hard rock. Really pleasant. Maybe a littl bit samey in bits? Very enjoyable though. Good car music maybe

Not bad, but not a band I’ve ever been interested in nor will I revisit.

Probably one of the most aptly named bands ever. I'm not in the mood for this much anymore, but when I am, it definitely scratches an itch.

Don't need to hear this again -

These guys are good. They have a gritty sound. Ace of Spades is a good song.

Second and final Motorhead. I could have sworn that these guys had three list albums in 'em, but nope. Just this and the Hammersmith live album. Honestly, two list albums seems about right for these guys, so I'm not complaining. Anyways, this album. While I do generally enjoy the novelty of live albums, I must admit that it's difficult to form much of an opinion on Motorhead's style, so I'd be curious to hear what their hard rock approach sounds like in the studio. Here goes. Yeah, it's fine. Just not really my style. Still, I can admit that this music is competent. The cool, confident guitar riffs carry these songs along well and feature a commendable level of variety. The general muddiness of the guitars was also an element that I enjoyed - it contrasts nicely with the cleaner sound that the percussion has. The songwriting is deliberate and effective, with plenty of good choruses. The vocals aren't my style, though they do work in the tough as nails context of this album and I can understand their appeal. Overall, this album was solid and just about the perfect length for what it was trying to be. My middling score moreso relates to the interest that I have in this genre of music. Book time. Debuted at No. 4 on the UK charts. The title track was a successful single. The book entry closes out by saying that this album concluded "The first, glorious period of Motorhead history" and laid the groundwork for later explorations of speed metal. Wikipedia says that this was the band's most commercially successful album in addition to being their debut release in the US. Critics really liked it and it's regarded as one of the all-time best metal albums. The chart success was mostly just relegated to the UK at the time of release, though it charted modestly in nine countries when an anniversary edition of the album was released in 2020. These seem like good enough qualifiers to me and, as mentioned previously, I'm favourable to Motorhead having two albums on the list. I cosign this inclusion.

I feel like I should like this album more than I do. It's in the general wheelhouse of what I am into, but whereas the AC DC song is fun, the Motorhead song doesn't work as well on ad infinitum repeat.

Getting an actual studio album by Motörhead makes me wonder why that crummy live album would ever be on this list. This album is exactly what you expect. It’s driving hard rock with a metal taste to it, the lyrics are nothing impressive and every song feels a little the same. It’s perfect in some situations where you just need music to have more energy than thought, but it doesn’t serve a lot of purpose beyond that.

Rock on!

Not really my favorite style but still decent

I actually like the formula of this band but I don’t know that there’s enough variety in each track to keep me interested. Also jailbait is gross. Actually all the lyrics in general are kinda gross.

The music on this album was fast-paced, early metal. The riffs were quite electric. The guitar solos were plenty and the drums were rapid. The lyrics in some of the songs were creepy, though ("Jailbait", for instance). My parents used to listen to this kind of music frequently (I do remember hearing some of these songs in my childhood). I'm not super into it, but it was spirited overall.

This was a lot better than I thought it would be (the fact that it's still just a 3 tells you all you need to know about how good I thought it would be). This will never be my thing, but I sort of get it.

Metal Punk at its finest!

The title track is classic. The rest not as good, but still enjoyable. 3.5 stars

While not a Heavy Metal fan, I remember seeing Motorhead on Top of the Pops and always liked the song 'Ace of Spades'. Found another track that I enjoyed as well. Can't beat English heavy metal.

Can I tell the difference between each song? No. Do I care? No. It rocks

The songs are pretty addicting and simple which is its virtue as an album. However, I just can't listen to Lemmy for an extended period. Somehow MY throat hurts.

Overall enjoyed it, though the end is not as satisfying as the start. That is probably due to the fact that most track sound the same, though it's a great note, it does get tiring at some point. Jailbait is also extremely problematic so minus a point

What can I say, it's Motorhead. The riffs are fast and chunky, the lyrics are crude and the vibes are fun. That Jailbait song is pretty rough even for 1980, but the rest is fine.

Fine metal album. Didn’t listen very closely

I’m not a fan of metal music, but Motörhead doesn’t grind my gears as much as other metal bands. They supposedly produce Thrash Metal (?) versus heavy metal, and maybe that’s the subtle difference that gets me. The lead singers voice meshes well with the chaotic guitars and rampant drumming despite every song sounding very similar. This was a good introduction for me to the aforementioned Thrash Metal but it mostly likely starts and stops with this album. PS - hat tip to Guitar Hero and the Tony Hawk skateboard video game for bringing Ace of Spades into my life. That song does kick some serious ass!

This is the rock and roll equivalent of a shot and a beer at a dive bar. It has a bit of a kick, doesn't taste very good, and too much will give you a headache....but it definately hits the spot now and then. Ace of Spades absolutely rips, the rest is fine.

Punk Rock. And if you like that one note that Lemmy “sings” you’ll love this. Oh yeah it has Ace of Spades.

Just 40 minutes of adrenaline, kinda cool.

Lemmy is an icon, part of the definition of a rockstar. The song Ace Of Spades is iconic, one of the best songs of the genre. The rest of the album is ok, lyrics are kinda bad, but it's still an iconic sound. Lemmy's voice is always recognizable.

It's really impressive how they managed to release an album where they just play the same song over and over again with different titles.

If you take ZZtop, drop it an octave, play it at 1.25 speed, you can hear this at home. I can see where this stands in the hard rock metal continuum but I don't really care for it.

If you like the song Ace of Spades you will like the album Ace of Spades.

somehow someways fun but i wish there was only one motorhead album.

Motörhead makes some decently good metal, I mean it’s not my thing but it’s not too heavy haha (def was for the time)

It's a good album for the ears, just pretty engaging metal music throughout. It's not special, but it doesn't need to be. Ace of Spades is the highlight song, but the rest sounds like it, so it works.
