Reviews (page 11 of 11)

I get he’s an icon and musically important. However, there’s nothing here for me.

i’m not even trying bro

Jazz not my thing.

Wanted to like it but the brass is too shrill. Sorry Duke.

tough to review this one as Jazz is such a different genre. I think it's an enjoyable listen, and it definitely is high floor for what I listened to, but I don’t really think the ceiling is there, didn’t finish the album as I couldn’t keep interest Rating Scale: -High floor + -High ceiling - -Multiple bangers - -Emotion inducing - -Relistenable - Overall rating: 1/5

too boring, couldn't finish. i can tolerate jazz only when it's played live and/or by my relatives

Cannot be bovvad with these jazz albums anymore

I'm sure it's an important piece of music but unfortunately, jazz is not my thing so I did not like the album. It was too long, there was too much talking and the music - to me personally - wasn't anything exceptional.

Pretty boring. Maybe I dont appreciate jazz enough, but this sounds like elevator music.

Not my cup of tea.

Livealbum

Not my cup of tea

Tinny tinny sound

Absolute legend but I cannot stand jazz

This is a big no for me. I'm sure Duke Ellington is plenty talented and I'm sure the folks at the venue had a lovely time listening to him and his band playing but I cannot stand to listen to a double album of live jazz. It's almost as if somebody set out to make the worst possible record for me to listen to. I made it 3 tracks in before calling it quits.

My love of jazz versus my hatred for live albums. Unfortunately… the latter wins today. This record is genuinely unpleasant to listen to in full. The mixing is so bad that I had to actively change the volume whenever the screeching trumpet would come in. The 3 minute interludes and introductions scattered about the album are not enjoyable. And why the hell did it start with the national anthem??

Ei jazzia jaksa

the end of the performances kinda killed it for me ngl

A two disc live album 😩. No thank you.

is this jazz? A bit all over the place, and im not following

Not for me

More live jazz... smashing... Since you already know I'm giving this crap a 1, let me take this opportunity to explain my umbrage with live albums. It's the same issue I have with people taking videos of concerts, fireworks, weddings, etc. By being so focused on trying to "capture the moment", you end up completely missing it. What's more, odds are you're never even going to watch that stupid video again - or worse, you'll try to make people who weren't there watch it, and trust me - they don't want to. All that said, I still would have hated this performance live. Jazz sucks. Period.

Oh a live jazz album over two hours long. All things evil popping up on this vying for my least favorite album yet. Well played, Duke. You really worked for this one star.

Did not like.

Zzz.

Just cannot care about jazz so gave up.

Livealbum

More boring, live jazz.

Not for me. 1/5

Jazz is not my jam. This is very big band-y jazz, so it sounds very dated (it is!). I like some of the aspects of the big band influence, but ultimately, this didn't win me over. I am still not a jazz fan. The songs go on too long and are too repetitive. I think it might be less annoying to experience it live, but the repetition can be maddening. The high squeaky notes are infuriating. Music is supposed to make you feel something--I don't think frustration is the feeling they're going for, but that's what I feel listening to this. The live aspects of this album (the intros, the cheering, etc.) don't bother me like they do others. It's kinda neat to hear the old school way of talking that was once common in the USA.

Before starting this I would’ve never listened to a Jazz album and, despite it being listed as one of my worst genres on the site, I have found a few that I have really liked and given 5 stars to. This however is not one of them. I got bored of this pretty quickly which is not good for a 2+ hour album. I never got to the point where I would say I hated it but by the end I was barely paying attention to it. I don’t doubt that if you are into Jazz this is probably brilliant but it just wasn’t one for me.

Too long!!!!

This album didn’t resonate with me, as I’ve always found jazz a challenging genre to connect with. Ellington at Newport is clearly a landmark recording for jazz fans, but personally, I found it difficult to engage with the style and energy of the performance. Favourite Track: I couldn’t identify a standout track, as the overall sound didn’t quite click with me. Least Favourite: The whole album blended into what felt like an overwhelming wall of jazzy improvisation — not something I found easy to follow or enjoy. Album Artwork: The cover is fine — nothing remarkable, but it suits the era and genre

i dont like this song because there is no singing but the beat is kind of good . i dont like the second song i dont like the beat i dont recomend this album

I dont like this at all because I don't like jazz and I don't like how there are no lyrics. I would not recommend this to someone else because I think that they would not like them. I give this 1 star.

the first song is lowk bad idk why I don't like it its js that the background music was alr n yea the second song was alr bc the music was ok n the trumpet I think I was idk how to spell it but that part was good.

Album very Jazz. Contains much sound. It is rated

A little too lengthy for my taste.

I've slowly become appreciative to jazz thanks to this list but this one just wasn't hitting the spot for me. Maybe it was the live elements, or maybe it was the sheer length of some it (I mean 15 minutes for one song, do me a favour). Much better jazz albums on this list so I could've done without this one

Old timey swinging jazz is not something I enjoy. Had to cut this one short after four of five songs. I understand the playing, I get the skill, I know these are highly appreciated musicians, but I just cannot stomach the high pitch happiness rampage that these tracks seem to convey.

Pas n'importe quoi, attention : Ellington at Newport, 1956.

I made it about 45 minutes

Can appreciate the sound of jazz but doesn’t do anything for me.

Not into jazz. Awful, listened to first song, not music for me.

01) Festival Junction - 4,0 02) Blues to Be There - 4,5 03) Newport Up - 4,5 04) Jeep's Blues - 5,0 05) Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue - 5,0 TOTAL: 4,60 (46/100) Current ranking: 343/359 I definitely have no intention of listening to the double CD release, instead I found a playlist of the original LP with only 5 tracks lasting an acceptable 40 minutes. Although, what is acceptable when it comes to Jazz... I just can't stand all that Jazz.

This album was much too long and there were wayyy too many musician introductions at the end of each session. I doubt anyone in the crowd even knew the name of the third quartet flutist in seat 6 (or cared). I thought jazz was for old people but there were so many shrill, squeaky moments I started wondering if everyone's hearing aides were turned off. The live format of this album doesn't work at all, I know there are talented people on this stage but I think you had to be there. Jazz may be a living, breathing genre but I'm good on this one until I'm neither of those. Sufferable 1.35.

Can't say I enjoyed the album that much but 'Ol Dookie and his band play pretty well together and have a blast doing it. You can hear it on "Diminuendo in Blues" or is that the crowd? Really didn't like that at the end of songs the horn players were trying to hit the highest note and make their instruments sound like a shrieking fan-girl. Tell her to shut the f up please. And why are do many songs have Blues in the title...isn't this jazz? Had to be there live for this one I guess...1.25.

I'm sure this was a hell of a show back in 1956, but not much translates through when listening to the album version. It's 40 minutes of big band jazz that does very little to differentiate itself to the untrained ear for me. Duke is a legend from way back so I'm sure he deserves this entry on the list for historical reasons but I'm sure I could never hear any more of his work without issue. 1.39 stars

DNF I'm not listening to two and a half hours of Jazz

Star spangled banner! Bee in a dustbin.

Damn that's a long album, no thanks

Mind-numbingly boring most of the time, excruciatingly painful to the ears at others (I had to turn the volume waaaay down during some literal screeching from a trumpet at one point).

50s Tom and Jerry music again. Didn't like

what a drag

Fucking jazz.

I just don't like jazz.

It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't for me. Already not really a fan of Jazz, and this was straight jazz no singing which kind of took it a step lower for me. I can see the appeal, but it doesn't appeal to me

I just don’t like this stuff.

Too long

Too long Too shite

He's much better as a ghost in Big Mouth than this album.

No horns

Live recordings are a terrible format.

Too long; didn’t enjoy

Hard pass

I might have rated this higher if it wasn’t: A. A live album B. 2 hours long C. Incredibly boring

For a guy who does not enjoy Jazz, this was a long ass 2 hours. And isn't this like the 2nd of 3rd album that recorded live at Newport? Newport must have been a happening place at one time. Maybe it still is. Hell I don't know. But what I do know is I did not enjoy this album. Sorry, Duke.

Too long. Don't like live albums. Didn't think the music was all that great although mayne it was at the time

N gostei

Nothing for me here. I don't mind some plinky piano nonsense, or even twangy guitar nonsense. But I didn't sign up for any squealing trumpet nonsense.

Gillar inte den här typen av jazz. Dessutom som tråkig liveplatta.

I thought I would enjoy it. I did not. I couldn’t even listen to all of it because 2 hours of that is way too much

Yup. It's jazz. This is game show music. My head hurts.

A trio of pain. Jazz, live albums and it being stupidly long. 2 hours of suffering. At first I hated the host listing names and informing late audience members of what they had missed. Surely you would cut that shit out? Then the screeching never ending noises started and I would have much rather listened to him list the name of every audience member present. Maybe the worst album I have ever listened to. No redeeming qualities.

Gave it 1 track, then ran the fuck away

This made me feel like my atoms were out of position

not today, no

Sorry, but I'm never going to like Jazz.

Did not like it.

No pude escucharlo

2 hour live jazz, that is not even that good, why would anyone want to listen to that

Cannot deny the talent, skill, musicianship, etc.....just kinda old and boring. I'd like to respect them with a better rating, but if I am being honest....

I have been to a couple of different newports, and can honestly say this the worse one. And I have been to the Welsh one!! Tracks are too long! Didn't like it. However on a positive not it was better than coltrane

Is it just me

Not a fan of jazz music

Not a fan of Duke or live albums, too much introduction talk to keep me listening to the whole thing. Also Jazz is not my favorite.

Not for me

not my style

Sax går fetbort

I’ve never like Jazz, I HATE live albums, and I hate long songs. I’m not going into this with the best of expectations. And I was not disappointed. The fact that people actually paid money to go see this performance live is mind-blowing to me. Sure, they’re good musicians, but there’s no structure, nothing to focus on. This is just proving that jazz just isn’t for me.

Awful, had to turn it off. Not to my taste at all.

Niet vol te houden voor mij!

Right.

Way too old for me

This isn’t bad, but it’s not for me at all.

Live album

hes too old for me

Man I really hated this. This is just not for me.

i'm aware of how prestigious this is, but not my thing

I do not like jazz at all

Jazzia, ihan jees mut livemusiikki ei inspiroi

I don't listen to jazz

I didn't think jazz was my thing and I still don't. Skillful musicians but no edge.

Nope, not for me. Didn’t make it all the way through, to much waffle from the presenter.

Really not my kind of thing.

One star seems a little harsh however a liver performance Jazz album was never going to be my thing and rating based on how much I enjoy listening so anything else would be a lie.

Someone letting out the air in a balloon for 40 mins

Obviously trash?

Fuckin jazz.
