Reviews (page 9 of 11)

Good tunes, but live recording in 1956 was kinda distant.

I just don't really like this kind of jazz.

A very pleasant listen although I'm not sure it stands up to active listening

Very cool, easy background listening. Great musicians, not sure the live element adds that much.

Whilst it's enjoyable jazz, I wasn't particularly grief at any point. Deserves its pace on this list, though.

Spotify had the remastered album, running at about 2 hours. Far too long! I opted to pick out the 5 tracks from the original 1956 LP (accordingly to Wikipedia). Much better.

biiiig album, but has some cool music

2.7 per track. Ignored the talking tracks. This is fine, perfect for background music but I don’t think I’d be listening with intent.

Dope work vibes.

Well this was perfectly pleasant. Nice to have a live album for this kind of music. As far as jazz goes I thought this was easy going and not aggravating...

Some good tunes, and great musicians playing them. But Jazz just isn’t my bag.

Good listen. Jazz really isn’t my favorite, but this was an enjoyable listen. 3 stars for me, but probably a 4-5 for a jazz album.

Love albums always feel like sneaky best of albums.

I didn't hear as much of this style of music on my childhood as I did of Stan Getz and that style, but this is the music my mom grew up listening to so I have heard it before and a lot of other big band music. Mom's favorite tho was Sinatra. Anyway, this album is historic and foundational, so I approve!

Jazz. Trompetita.Orquestita.

Hard to listen to, partially down to the recording equipment available at the time and partly because it's Jazz. Sounds like it was recorded with a potato.

It was nice. Sounds good nothing I recognized

1/11/24

Jazz. Trompetita.Orquestita.

A very good jazz ensemble album by duke ellington. This is classic jazz that has a little bit of everything and is very easy to listen to. Back when jazz was one of the top genres and the most talented artists performed it. Now put that energy into a live album and you get this solid piece of work. 6.7/10

Dinner music.

Quite a good jazz album. Listened to the original version because I don’t really feel like listening to the complete 2+ hour version. Haven’t finished the last track as of writing this, but it’s good so far. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Jeep’s Blues 2. Festival Junction 3. Newport Up

Ok double album - didn’t resonate with me like other jazz albums.

uh its jazz

Have to be in the jazz mood

liked but not sure i would listen a lot

Jazz. Trompetita.Orquestita.

I'm usually a fan of the genre, and it's nice to listen to something other than bad rock music, but sadly this just didn't do it for me. The version I listened to had way too many interruptions and while the volume of tracks was impressive, I would have liked a pared-down album with just the jazziest jazz. As far as Dukes go, this is more like Marmaduke, you listen to it because it exists, and not because you really, really want to. I was hoping more for the 1992 Duke Men's Basketball team, really good but also exciting and has you on the edge of your seat not knowing when the music will finally stop.

Would be something to see live for sure!

Too long

Not a huge big band fan, but Ellington makes it a great listen.

Good fun!

Had higher hopes than this - I’ve definitely heard some Ellington which I enjoyed a lot more than this

Boring, not my thing.

Old School Cool.... Jazz origins

I like jazz. Jazz is cool. It's great background music for reading, working, anything really. Today, it was good background for falling asleep. So. It was nice, but I only half heard it.

Festival Junction- 3.7/5 Blues to Be There- 3.4/5 Newport Up- 3.8/5 Jeep's Blues- 4/5 Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue- 3.9/5 Total- 3.8/5

It was jazz

Making a mental note to relisten and compare this to the Count Basie album when it comes up so I can get a good sense of big band music. I thought I would have liked this style more but it was quite tedious (and felt a little disingenuous to know that so much of it had been “faked”). Definitely disappointed (by jazz standards) but not counting it out yet

Not a huge fan of the big band sound in jazz, at least not compared to what smaller acts do, but there are good moments here. That big sax solo (mostly) met the hype. Best song: Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue

Det var trots allt rätt behagligt. Inte kanon, inte kalkon. Men det funkar. Klart positivt överraskad.

Another day, another live jazz album, Ellington at Newport is my first album from the 50s in a while, but unlike that last album where it is difficult to tell that it is live sometimes, with this album, you can easily tell that it's a live recording mostly due to the rough camera sound. I don't think that is a bad thing though, the album was still pretty good and had it's moments. This album is worth a listen. Best Song: Festival Junction Worst Song: Blues To Be There

ITS JAZZ!!!

Weirdly some of the "songs" in the album playlist are just the spoken introductions to the song. Nice to listen to some jazz while working.

Tuo korkeaääninen saksofoni on hiukkasen rasittavan kuuloinen ajoittain.

Not a bad jazz/blues album. Fun to listen to, but extremely long to listen to all the way through, especially with the commentary intermissions. Favorite songs - Tea for Two, Take the A Train, Diminuendo in Blue, Tulip or Turnip

He is very talented but today it just felt too noisy. My little head could not enjoy it. 3 of 5

Kick ass duke!

Big band jazz, it's fine just not my thing

"Ellington at Newport" is a prime example of old-fashioned big-band jazz. The album features fantastic musicianship and has that big-band sonic feel. For some, this style of jazz might seem boring and outdated. If that's what you're thinking, try this: close your eyes, tune out the digital world, let your guard down and your mind wander, and give it a listen.

Lovely music. Mostly laid back, but really finishes with a flurry. I am starting to listen to more jazz and in some moments it just doesn't work for me, but this was great. 3.5/5 Will likely listen again

Artiest: gekend van Bigmouth Album: nieuw

It's alright, even approaching really good. Tends to be musical w/o too much showmanship. Def. a 3, maybe a 4.

I had to remember these songs for a class in college and that left a bad taste in my mouth. But hey he was in Big Mouth

Very long album

Good background music. Too much talking on the recording but it was nice enough.

too much talking in between songs

Not typically a fan of Jazz music, but this was great as background music while I worked today.

Great for jazz!

Alright, no words so good for work but just alright.

The music is good but a 2-1/2 hour album doesn’t feel like it fits the nature of this project.

This isn't really the type of jazz i enjoy most, it's big band swing type stuff and i prefer the smaller groups with more solos, bebop and all that. But it's hard to deny the ability on display here. They really shred through some of these songs and they all have some catchy licks all over them. Don't regret having to listen to it at all.

Favoriete nummer: 'take the a-train'.

I have to figure out why some arrangements like this make me anxious. This sounds like something from the 40s, not 56.

Reminds me of those 1950s Hollywood movies, where people glammed up to the nines slide into shiny white booths in a club late at night. This is the soundtrack to those conversations of intrigue and romance. To those ends, this music is mildly tolerable. But way too long! Or maybe it just felt like it.

I like the music. I don’t like the talking between songs. The album was very long.

I enjoyed this while working on a project and having Duke fill my kitchen with sounds. But nothing of note stayed with me.

I just don't enjoy listening to live albums. Music was good though.

Hard to know what I'm supposed to be rating. I can't find the original album only remastered versions from 1999 and 2006. Both of these albums are linger than the original I went for the shorter of the two. It's OK as it goes though I struggle with the top screechy notes of some of the trumpet solos.

This is a classic performance by a jazz giant. But Robert, please answer this: where are Mingus' *Mingus Ah Um*, Miles Davis' *Milestones*, Art Blakey's *Moaning*, Horace Silver's *Song For My Father*, Nina Simone's *Little Girl Blue* and John Coltrane's *Blue Train*, *Giant Steps*, *My Favorite Things* or *Africa Brass*??? Where are they, Robert? Don't you ever think the *1001 Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die* book has the final word about jazz. Ever. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 427 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 264 Albums from the list might* include in mine later on: 140 (including this one, at least if I manage to include all the records I've quoted up there in my own list). Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 174

There's just so much of this that it's difficult to get into a consistent vibe with it - too much talking and so on. The music is fine but it never really rocks my boat like some of the other jazzy stuff on here does.

Supper or reading music. Something you’d hear at a nice restaurant

Very ✨jazzy✨. Do feel like I’m in the movie Swing Kids. I’ve been wanting to find instrumental jazz similar to the sound of the 40s. Like that it’s live and you can hear the talking as well, very atmospheric.

I’m a big jazz fan but for some reason big band swing rarely does it for me. This is great and one of the best examples of the subgenre but just doesn’t really hit with me

38 tracks over 2 hours is a big listen, but it's nice to hear old style jazz.

A lot of talking at the start and the American national anthem. I get it that it’s a live album but the amount of talking annoys me, the music is great though.

The music parts are pretty good. Like so many live albums, it has way too many extended bits of talking and crowd noise which makes it hard to listen too much

Jazz. Trompetita.Orquestita.

Very pleasant. The original is very accessible but the >2hr extended version is a bit much.

I enjoyed listening to that. Nice change of pace

Good Jazz album, but not for me. It’s a bit too slow and less structured for my taste. Some people might say that’s just what Jazz is but whatever.

Jazz is infinitely better when it's not an inaccessible, esoteric mess. Ellington at Newport is a nice showcase of the brass section, and a good starting point for people (like myself) who do not like jazz.

Some pretty good Muzak. Great background sound to ignore during a long hot bath or on an elevator.

Sophisticated jazz chords. Great musicians ... smooth but with some punch. With jazz, I never know where its going. I'm sure there's a structure...but I don't know what it is! Like a soundtrack to 60's films

Good, but a little long.

Despite a lot of time wasted on introductions and audience cheering, You just know that this was a rockin' good concert. Swing and Big Band Jazz isn't my bag, I much prefer Be-bop and Hard-bop that came later, but this certainly laid the foundations for more modern jazz. Some of the solos are astonishing, eg Gonzalves on sax in Diminuendo in Blue and Sam Woodyard on drums in Skin Deep. Overall, the band is tight and in peak form so this is seminal Swing/Big Band recording.

Great jazz and instrument playing! 3/5

The live discussion actually makes it feel very real and raw- it's nice to get insight into the artists, and feel the camaraderie and pride between the musicians and the emcee Authentic 50s jazz: noir feel Jazz seems to suit the live setting more, as much as it feels more involved and immersive with the emcee sections, it makes me wish I was in the room with the performance- the lack of vocals means it's more difficult to discern emotion and that could be felt more if watching a performance

Put your dukes up, we're about to have a right tear up. Fuck my life, I'm spitting blood all over my kid's new trainers. She's not going to be happy with me.

Loooooong. And half the tracks weren’t even songs, just him introducing his band. The actual music itself was definitely quality jazz, but I’m still not a huge fan of the genre.

Live album. Appears to be a recording of a Jazz showcase which is ok but has no real flow to it.

Holy Jesus that was 2 hours of jazz. This album was surprisingly playful with the introductions of songs and performers - the live version made the songs much more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. Overall, a good selection of jazz by some of the greats, but nothing that wowed enough to share with others.

Just listen to the original 1956 LP if you're on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0FTvPX7D3ogej9MVJQqqdv?si=aamNrTJaR2muafMlxGG4sA The end of "Festival Junction" is so over the top, it made me laugh in disbelief. Definitely preferred the more down tempo numbers like "Blues To Be There."

Soothing jazz music from a legend.

Decent and enjoyable early jazz

Nice big band jazz music, no denying that. Can't say it gripped me tightly, though.

Environment: on the deck with friends, sunny afternoon Attitude: 1 cigar, 2 coronas Review: Lots of talking, squealing, pleasant jazz for the situation

Is was a good listen.

Smooooooooth. This album really captures a point in time while the music itself feels timeless. Fave track Blues to Be There.

Music is very nice, but I don't like the talking in between. I think you must have been there

I like it but it's a bit on the long side for me

I do like jazz but always find it hard to get into some of the classics. The songs on this all feel so similar and find the sound of the trumpet to be too screeching.

I find this type of jazz highly preferable to the "it's the notes they *don't* play" sort of jazz. I like structure and melody. This isn't my favorite Ellington stuff—I'm not going to go out of my way to listen to this album again—but I'm perfectly happy to have it playing in the background. I prefer more bite-sized junks like "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," "Prelude to a Kiss," and my all-time favorite, "Caravan." (Seriously, give this a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n28qRrRGJ1M. The audio quality isn't great, but the song itself is fantastic.)

I quite enjoyed the lively sections of this - classic big band vibes. As ever with jazz I can’t reaaaally tell one virtuoso performance from the next so I have to look at the context a bit... Ok, so while it we’re quite late in Duke’s career by this point, it seems the Newport concert was so rapturously received that it regained him a record contract, and resurgent popularity for the rest of his life. What a nice story! It’s well worth 3 nice stars.

Easy listening

I enjoyed it more than I expected. Won't listen to it again.

Buff.

A whole lot of Duke Ellington live. You need to be in the mood for this, I think, rather than just having it served to you one morning. If you've never heard it before, it can be hard to listen to all the introductions and asides while waiting to decide if something is going to be worth the 2 hours, 7 minute investment. Jump right into Black and Tan Fantasy to get a sense and maybe even to help you get into the requisite mental space. An album best served with a drink late at night, I suppose.

ok, 2 hours of big band jazz is too much. But, while this isn't really my favorite, it wasn't a bad listen.

drags on but it’s live so i forgive it - i think i just don’t like big band as much as most jazz

Lots of paaaah papapapapaaaah paaaah!

Too patriotic

old school cool

While the musicianship is great, I’ve always found this era of big band/swing to be very boring. Overrated in my opinion.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Newport Up (13) 2 - Diminuendo In Blue (19) 3 - Festival Junction (31)

dudes were as cool as cool as cool

Way too long

grooved to this

It is a jazz album. It was alright but I don't think I would seek this album out again.

Big band not really my thing, but there were some nice jazzier numbers. Quite the crowd, one of the tracks is Riot Prevention and I get the sense it literally was. Must have been a scene.

Classic great jazz. But to be honest there were some challenging gnawing points that I had trouble with. As much as I think I like jazz, my palette is a bit unrefined.

Cool Jazz

Solid live jazz album. The artistry and interstitials were notable here, just a lot of music to take in all at once and fully appreciate at once

Jazz hands!! Ba ba ba BAAAA!

Another good jazz album but I still don't 'get' jazz. This is much more trad- it's all standards and very well played and pleasant.

Pretty inoffensive band jazz. Representative of what it is and evocative of the times. Not sure about the shrill trumpet/cornet? Maybe Glen Miller is more my thing.

Nice live set. Another album I'd never have listened to if it weren't for the 1001 journey.

Nice, smooth and soulful jazz album

Live recording of Duke Ellington & His Orchestra. Swings nicely in places, but goes on for too long in others. Take the "A" Train is a Duke Ellington classic of course.

Very energetic, must have been fantastic to hear this live. On record I'm not so convinced.

Good humored, cheeky sounding jazz tunes.

Huhhuh..

⚠️ WARNING! If you search for this album on Spotify, the first thing that comes up is the 2 hour version. You don't have to listen to all that jazz (ha), because the original 1956 LP was only 40 minutes long. Look for the playlist by the user "josesanzgc" instead. TL;DR: If the version you're listening to starts with the Star Spangled Banner, that's the wrong version. Man, I kinda hate the fact that this album is actually pretty good, because now I can't make my review: "Duke Ellington? More like Duke Smellington".

It was a good jazz album, but it also could have been a very good aid to put me to sleep.

not my kind of jazz but good still

Not bad. I liked the jazzier jazz.

So long. 3.5

It's not really a bad album, it's just way too long. Honestly though Eben if it were leaner in run time this gets fixed under "stuff that's fine to hear, but I would never choose on my own"

Two 2-hour live albums in a row? Not sure what I did to deserve THAT but whatever, maybe this will be really good? Looks like old timey jazz by the cover. They didn't have much imagination in the 50s. Starting with the star spangled banner and a spoken word introduction: spare me, cut this shit out. Not off to a good start for a 2 hour album. After that it just jazzes on for a long time. Not bad, but again: 2 fuckin' hours. Every second song gets an introduction, lots of jazz things going on. 3/5 because the music was actually pretty enjoyable, but fuck the length was pushing it.

Very old, a genre I still don't quite understand, a slightly messy live recording, much too long (at least the linked Spotify version), but still pretty magical at points.

I like jazz but don’t know much about it, so it’s hard for me to tell what’s “good”. I liked listening to this but could’ve done without the extended introduction.

I'm not a huge Jazz person, but I do like Big Band music. In this case, the focus on brass instrumentation is pretty cool.

Best Song: Skin Deep. Who doesn't like a drum solo? Worst Song: Pt.1 - Festival Junction. That solo at the end is just needlessly shrill. Overall: This really feels like a time capsule that's difficult to appreciate in the modern era. The jazz is nice, but the crowd seems to be losing their goddamn minds over it. Had they just never experienced anything remotely progressive/transgressive before? It gave the strange sense that I was missing something when I heard how extreme of a reaction the crowd had to the music.

Jazz you know: I like it but don't think I exactly understand it, above a superficial level. I liked this fine, the version I was listening to was not great fidelity-wise. I can't say it stood out for me.

I am sure this is great musicianship, just not my scene...

Errr. I'm sure this is amazing but I don't really like live albums or instrumentals and I especially don't like talky bits as whole tracks.

I find this a little dull, but not annoying

This is the bluest of blusey! Talented and not my thing.

I hope this Quincy guy will have a carreer

Jazz just isn’t really my thing.

Skills and respect but rarely my interest

Jazzy! Almost crashed my car.

Don’t like jazz

This album almost certainly didn't work for me because it was two jazz albums in a row, which is more than I listen to in an average year. I also personally cannot handle squeaky wind instruments.

The set list of this dual-disc album is quite unique... Though it is not the best live jazz album I've listened to, it's a good one.

jazz is gr8, im js rly not in the mood rn.

And this is the kind of jazz I don’t like.

I really wanted to like this, but I didn't. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ most Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 333 Already owned : 76 Purchased : 16 To buy : 3 Nope : 238

Looked night and day for the shorter version. Unfortunately stuck with the one that lasts forever. This is never ever gonna be something j enjoy. It has none of the things I like about music. Performed well, skillful etc. But to my brain, and my less educated pallete, its uninteresting TWO HOURS AND SEVEN MINUTES

I have to be really honest — Being a live album is what kills it for me. Half the album is people talking, the instruments don't sound that great because it's a live album, and it feels kind of a shame. As for the music, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but the sound quality takes away points from it for me. Also TOO DAMN LONG.

Crowd went fucking mad for it didn’t they

Pretty wild to discover that duke Ellington is in fact not just a horrible caricature from that awful Big Mouth show But at the end of the day this is still jazz, and I’m still not loving it 2

Pretty long to listen at..

Nope. Not for me.

I first tried listening to this on a train where I felt profoundly travel sick, so that wasn't the best start. I can't really get into the big bombastic tunes here but the slower, quieter ones are definitely interesting. 2.5, wouldn't listen again

good enough jazz

jazz no ta bueno 2/5

The Spotify version is over 2 hours long...Yeah, not doing that!! Found a condensed version on YouTube, which was okay (for jazz!). At least there was some melody and everyone seemed to be playing the same tune!! Historically, a big deal, occasionally engaging, frequently a bit… much.

Old head jazz is always gonna be boring but I didn’t hate this enough to give it 1 star

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get into big band jazz. I can recognise the excellence on show here. I can tell there is a story going on with the recording too. Ellington is obviously an absolute master of the game. It’s just that, even as someone who can safely now call themselves a jazz fan, the particular aesthetic presented is not one that resonates with me. I find it hard to put a score on something that is obviously top class but doesn’t work for me. I want to rate things on my own feelings though, and the piece of art as I experience it, so while I’m likely to skew my taste average for jazz in general, I’m going to have to be harsh here.

I suppose it was kind of interesting hearing the big band jazz compared to the other more improvised, strung out 'cooler' type. I feel this had a bit more going for it, for someone completed disinterested in jazz that is

Jazz nice. Or not. By far not the worse jazz album iv generated. Some of these songs were enjoyable and had a tune. However one of the tracks sounded like a bee trapped in a bottle. Not for me but tolerable.

I'm like 50% sure I already listened to this album. Not really, but how many mid-centrury live jazz albums are on here? I accidentally had the album set to shuffle, so maybe I didn't get the entire experience, but I don't need to listen to it again to get the full picture. it's jazz. there are long-ass drum solos. The audience is really into it though, which definitely enhances the experience.

Highlights: Festival Junction Just for notice, I only listened to the tracks from the original pressing (the link takes you to some complete edition). I don't feel like giving away two hours of my time for this type of instrumental jazz. I do like a big band record from time to time, but this just wasn't the one. It was just ok, but my barbaric uncultured ahh just doesn't see what's so special about this live recording... Not the first, not the last.

I’m sure it was an amazing night and the music is great, but listening to a live recording is like drinking lukewarm tea. It fails to capture the physical vibe, yet it's cluttered enough to obscure the intricacies

Man I really can't stand jazz or live albums like 90% of the time. Thank god they sound competent.

This is some of the better jazz I've listened to. I still can't get on with it but it's better than some of the more the pretentious smug stuff. And it's fairly short (I didn't listen to the double disc extended edition, over 2 hours!). Ok, which is a complement from me when it comes to jazz.

I can see this being a pinnacle of the genre, but I'm just not that big of a fan of the genre to begin with.

It’s technically very good, but just feels a bit trad jazz and straight laced to be exciting. The live recording was annoying andI just found it a bit dull

This is the first jazz album on the list that made me somewhat understand what people see in it as a genre. For a brief moment. I found myself actively listening around halfway through “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue” - not unlike the audience, I became engrossed in the (genuinely incredible) saxophone. But then the ending sounded like a dog’s toy - and I quickly caught myself, remembering that me and jazz are not friends.

I do not care it has been raining for the last two days in Newport in July 1956, Father Norman O'Connor! At the point the introduction to this album felt like it would continue for eternity, I bailed on the "Complete" version and jumped to the "Original" version, because I was going to throw something if I had to listen to 2 hours 7 minutes of this. 1 hour 6 minutes (which Amazon claims in the original, despite Wikipedia telling me it was originally 43 minutes) felt more doable. And presumably cut out some of the priest ramblings. I don't like jazz. I do generally like big band/swing, so this at least gave it a chance. I might have said this before, but I think I could possibly see me liking this sort of thing if I was sat in a club having a drink, watching the world go by. I don't like it when I'm doing the washing up. Jazz feels like music for a specific place to me. This was just about ok. Clearly very talented musicians who play off each other very well, but it's just not something I want to listen to. And I'm saying that after listening to the short version! 2/5

Sorry, Duke, but I just don't like jazz. Sounded like the crowd was having a great time, which was nice.

I can hear and respect the talent on wild display. I can understand and even appreciate why so many love jazz like they do, but frankly I just don’t particularly enjoy it. This is no exception. Stay tuned.

im dead im listening to the star spangled banner at 8:30am my besties are from newport this is cute they both would have the same reaction to the star spangled banner at 8:30am now it's a podcast okayyy duke ahead of his time tbh the only time i heard duke ellington was in big mouth so sorry 38 SONGS?? girl 2 hours of club penguin pizzeria music favorite song: idk i gave up

Jazzy but too many talking (no music) tracks.

Dammit! Duke is amazing, and his playing on this reflects that talent and wonderful sound... Only to be ruined by talking and the audience (the clapping was a big let down). Rarely does a live album do anything right.

This was perfectly fine but nothing stood out to me.

2.5 - Cool songs but too long and too much MC work.

Huge influence on Lisa Simpson.

in its day im sure this was fire, but it's just a snore to me

I didn't hate this jazz as much as I have previous listenings. This sounded a lot like what you hear in movies sometimes and that part I didn't mind.

Its good jazz, but too sharp stuff for me.

Not the biggest fan of this kind of jazz. Did the mistake to listen to the full two hour set, an experience I can only describe as grating.

I couldn't be bothered to plough through the whole thing - there's great musicianship on show, but jazz just isn't my thing. I'm also not big on live albums.

Probably needed to listen more actively to this one. Born in the 1800s is pretty amazing. Rating: 2.0

Jazz really does nothing for me. And fuck I hate the high notes.

OK I know live albums would be hard to record in the 50s but this is not the greatest quality. Musicianship top notch but not really my thing. Like "Water from an Ancient Well" a little too brassy which is not my thing. I feel like if I was there instead of listening to a fuzzy recording I would have been blown away. But if I was there there would have been a time machine involved and I would probably be too stressed trying to remember/prevent future events from happening to fully enjoy myself. So either way, two stars.

This was a slog. 2+ hours of jazz isn't for me, especially when a lot of it sounded the same (to my untrained ears). I didn't mind some songs in the second half, but most of it felt like a chore to get through.

Too long. Not really my kind of music

Decent jazz standards, average live production, far too much talking for the to be any flow. At over two hours this should have been edited into something different and more rewarding to repeat listens.

I don’t really like Jazz. I can appreciate the musicianship and songwriting but it just isn’t for me. I’ll give it an extra star though

Not for me

Cool to hear all the introductions and crowd reactions... for the first 40 mins or so. But as much as I enjoyed the context, it made a long album really drag. Maybe it's a 'you had to be there' situation, but the improvisation and super duper high notes were far less enjoyable in my car than in 1964 Newport, Rhode Island. 3 knocked down to a 2.5 for being too long, and rounded down because I'm not listening to it again.

Didn’t finish, don’t like jazz

Way too long.

TELL ME WHO AND I'LL BE THANKING THEM THE NUMBERED LOVERS OF DUKE ELLINGTON i'm not gonna listen to talking and instrumental jazz for two hours but great i guess

This is hard to access. Feel like live would've been an experience, but as a listener its difficult to get into. Great talent no doubt and had me engaged at times but overall another live album that doesn't do much for me and sort of washed into background

I don’t listen to jazz and don’t particularly care for the genre. Maybe this was good or even great, but it’s not something I could really even appreciate. I went in with an open mind…just didn’t like it and wouldn’t choose to listen to it again.

Jazz is jazz, either you like it or you don’t, I don’t

Good sounding record, ready to listen to. Not into this kind of Jazz. Glad I listened though.

icon but not really my thing

I couldn't even finish the first track because of how bored I was. 2/5

Nope. Don't like jazz. Will give it 2 stars as it seems influential

dont like jazz but the trumpet goes crazy

Feels like something I want to hear at a specific time and place.

carino

I do listen to jazz more than occasionally but not this kind. I just couldn't cope with the high pitched trumpet intervals. There were some really good bits in there but I found myself getting a bit bored, so its a shame the rating is so low.

Oh dear me. If I had to summarise this listening experience it would be by saying that this made me understand why my mum hates jazz. I really did like the piano and drums amd the overall rhythms of a lot of songs, but it was ruined by that godforsaken mosquito screeching of a trumpet. I genuinely felt like i was in a trumpet-induced psychosis at one point. The constant talking also didn't help. I will say though that I can appreciate that this is a live album and had I experienced it myself I would probably have loved it

The musicianship is great, and it seems like it was a fun show. A cool little time capsule of an album. The mix is a uneven at times, the trumpet sometimes just completely overpowers the entire band in an bad way. For a live show in 1956 I will say the production is fine, but when I'm comparing it to the history of the best albums, it's not better than most. This album isn't designed to be something you put on and listen to with unmatched intent and intensely critical ears from your home stereo, even if some people would do that anyway. It's designed to be heard from a stage while you admire the band and share the moment with an audience, and you'll never be able to do that. There's a cap on live albums, they'll never be perfect even if they're as good as they can be. After the hour and 20 minute live show you get an entire album's worth of studio recordings and those are much more balanced and well suited for listening to in this format. I like the way it ends, but it really needs to be listed as 2 separate releases. Skin Deep is probably my favorite of the live tracks. The album though certainly becomes hard to get through, it's just so long. And ultimately it's not for me. 2.3/5

Live jazz!

Crazy opening with the star spangled banner. I don’t always love a live album and this was cool but not my fav

I thought I was warming up to jazz but alass. The length of this thing (with Ellington introducing everything, the retakes and the riot breaking out) is too long at over two hours. Some of the solo's just struck me as "look at how incomprehensible I can get" or trying to make the trumpet squeel very high but not in tune. When it is not doing that it is just easy listening.

insufficient listen

Was a bit bored with this and wanted it to be over. Good ambiance music, but not for me to intentionally listen to.

Ive decided not to rate the album by individually rating each track because im not listening to 2 hours of straight jazz, but after listening to the actual songs and not the unnecessary speaking and other bits, I ended up giving it a 2 stars at most, like yes very talented mucisians but it was boring listening to, for me, the same thing over and over and over.

A 2+ hour live jazz album from the '50s is not something I will be subjecting myself to. Ain't nobody got time for that. I found a playlist with the original LP tracks on YouTube instead. Talented musicians. Boring music. Poor recording quality. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

It was ok. I'm not really a fan of 1950's jazz.

I appreciate the skill and talent on display here but jazz just isn’t for me. The songs all sound pretty much the same to my untrained ears.

As far as live albums go it wasn’t terrible but still not really my thing

Not my thing

Ensimmäistä kertaa kuuntelin jazzia omatoimisesti. Täytyy sanoa etten erityisesti välittänyt tästä livelevystä, mutta ainakin soittajat olivat taitavia.

It's Jazz! I'm sure it's very good Jazz, but I'm not the biggest Jazz fan. Still like it though, so 2*.

Loved to hear the live performance. I tend to zone out during jazz solos- even in high school. Great uniqueness in his sound, but can’t find myself reaching for this without a specific reason

don’t care for all the yapping

2.5/5 My first ever full jazz album listening session. + Great atmosphere, love hearing the crowd roar as much as they do + The level of craftmanship is amazing + Really kinetic music in the faster tracks, makes me wanna dance and clap + Skin Deep Drum Solo - I really wish I was there, I feel like missing out a lot just listening to this - The bluesy downtime songs bored me (really not my type of music) - after listening once, I think I am full, I had enough, thank you Fav: Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, Skin Deep, Festival Junction Least Fav: Blues to be there, Sophisticated Lady, Got it Bad (And That Aint Good)

I couldn’t finish this. It’s not bad I don’t think but not today for me

A live Jazz album from 1956 - very far away from my musical tastes, but I will admit some of the sounds here are pretty cool - I just cant entertain the idea of listening to the whole album without regularly skipping forward

I couldn't get into the vibe of this. I'm not a big fan of trumpet-focused jazz. It's almost like too much energy in the music, and I can never get emotionally or physically comfortable listening to it. I guess that's why some people like it, but it makes a bad experience for me. Guess this list just revealed something about me. Nice. 2 stars for self reflection through music I don't really like.

The complete album is incredibly long and I got pretty bored after a few songs. It isn't horrible but it's not my thing.

Not bad, but not for me.

Horns are just not my thing

A 2+ hour live jazz album can only go so far in the ratings. Massive negative points for all the waffling and starting with Star Spangled Banner. I enjoyed the music about as much as I did many of the other jazz albums before this. I found it fine but tedious to get through, especially considering the length. Some of the faster songs were better, but that trumpet was way too overwhelming and drowned out a lot of the instruments alongside it. Fairly generous 2

2.0 I don't love it I'm afraid. I feel like this was the metal of the 50s, you can hear the crowd going mental for it in the last song in particular, but given all that's come since it just seems a bit... Dull? Sax and piano were usurped by guitar as the instrument to really make people lose their minds, which I think was a good thing. Probably great for it's time, but it doesn't do much for me 70 years later. The screeching to close out pt. 1 goes down as well for me as the screeching solos of the metal I used to listen to as a teenager went down for my parents. Different time, different generation.

Very talented, but not for me

I get it but I just get bored listening to this. I think it would be more fun to have actually been live to enjoy it!

I sadly found this album to be a bit of a slog. I’m not always a fan of the saxophone, especially for high pitches, and there was a lot of that here. Also, the edition of the album I listened to was very long. Plenty of the music was pretty, but I was waiting for it to be over by the end.

I generally like this type of music, but this is a Live album (strike one) and it has a lot of talking (strike two). So, I'm not liking this so much.

If this has sold 800'000 copies at £30 (accounting for inflation) that means £2.2 million has been spent on listening to people talk about the band or the songs instead of the band actually playing the songs

Typical swing album, fine listen.

Enjoyable but I didn't love the patriotism at the start and it felt repetitive after a while

Liian muinaista jazzia, jotta jaksaisi oikein ajatuksella kuunnella.

Aika hapokasta..

I didn’t connect with any one song and the album as a whole I didn’t get in the grove with. Willie Cook made some damn annoying noises with his trumpet. I preferred the second disc of studio recording rather than the first which had the live tracks.

I am not sophisticated enough.

I really don't like jazz music :-(

Another live album! Have to stick to my guns and say I don't think they should be here. Although I would concede this one seems to be more worthy than the deep purple one we had yesterday. This seems more historically relevant. Perhaps that's more because it's very dated. The recording isn't great and the compere is unnecessary. Felt very authentic though, because it's a live recording! Unfortunately, I don't really like jazz and none of it stood out to me as particularly special. Extremely long too. 2.5 again but 2 this time as I'd rather hear deep purple again

Love Duke Ellington, especially his work with Ella Fitzgerald but this album isn't it for me. Don't enjoy live albums - great if you were there but the length of it, the chit chat inbetween bored me. Love ya Duke, but not this one!

im sure this is a very fine album but it is not to my tastes. 2/5

Best Track - "Newport Up"

C40, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Der Duke ist mir egal.

the trumpet hitting the highest notes it can hit ever might be the most annoying noise in the world. Otherwise, fine, but not my jam. A blitz of notes that sound like they go together but lack "song"ness

Too long!

Great as far as jazz goes, but not for me.

Too much jazz. I'm sure it's great for the initiated, but it does not make a good album for the rest of us. Especially the talk in between all the tracks also extra annoying.

This is an album for a jazz enthusiast, which I am not. I'm glad I listened to it once, I guess, but the lengthy talking between songs kinda kills what I'm personally looking for in a jazz album.
