Reviews (page 10 of 11)

Think I just don't care about jazz tbh

Duke Ellington is not my really my shit. Big band jazz doesn’t really do it for me. There are some great players on here like Coleman Hawkins and Johnny Hodges but I much prefer them in small band settings. Swing is a style of jazz that I don’t ever listen to. Feels old-timey in a bad way

The official spotify album is way too long. The original album is better.

Kept imagining Lisa Simpson in the Simpsons intro the way the saxophonist kept going on and on. Maybe it’s close minded of me but I tend to prefer songs with words, found a lot of this quite an effort to get through. Favourite song: Day in, Day Out Least: Black and Tan Fantasy

Will you please shut the fuck up about Newport? Nobody cares. Honestly having this be a live album dinged this quite a few points for me. I understand that everyone playing is extremely talented, even if they are “from the Bronx”, but it’s hard to focus on the music when that putz is lecturing you after every goddamn song.

Awesome live jazz

Very very Jazz. Definitely good for background music in a fancy restaurant but will not listen to it by myself.

A little Duke goes a long way.

Not for me

Don't like live recordings

Fun for what it is, great horns. But live recording of jazz that far back doesn’t sound the best and exists merely to create vibe. No singing means no hits so I won’t come back to this

It’s good but I wish it wasn’t live but it’s The Duke. Don’t think I’ll listen to it again.

I wanted to like this more than I did.

I respect Ellington for his influence on music and musicians to come, but I’m not a fan of Jazz or live albums for the most part. At least most live albums if I wasn’t there. This just wasn’t for me

Wasn’t for me

Dziwna wersja na żywo. Średnio

Being 40s jazz it does blend together, but it is ultimately pleasant. However I do like the ‘talking trombone’ effect a lot. Loses points for being 1.5 hours good: festival junction

Had it on but can't really remember anything memorable.

I was really excited. I love jazz music, but this was hard to get through while listening. If the setting was different, I’d like to think I’d enjoy it more.

I bet this would be really cool to see live, but it was a chore to get through via streaming. The talent is undeniable, but this just isn't my thing when working, driving, etc.

2.5 solid album but it doesn’t have the sauce im used to with jazz

For the 100th time, filtered by jazz - I apparently don't like big band, whatever that means! Blues to Be There was cool though - the Ellington-focused sections did it more for me than anything else.

Jazz yay

this was looong as hell, i can stand a couple jazz songs but 2 h 30 of jazz has to be some kind of medieval torture, i really like duke ellington but i couldn’t get through it

Not my thing

Bit old fashioned jazz wise although I can see it’s importance

This throws down the gauntlet for how complete a "Complete Live at ____" record can be with the Star Spangled Banner and the committee chair spending too much time on his intros. I'm surprised it doesn't include orders from the concession stand. Once they get to the music, it's cool but not the best recording.

jazz is an amazing art form. the musicians are incredibly skilled. i do not like listening to it. i could not do the full two hours so only listened to the tracks from the original LP. forgive me jazz fans

Standard jaz.

#617. I just really dont like jazz music. I just can't get into this. 2/5: jazz

Probably a better listen on vinyl. For me, it felt too long. What was with all the talking between songs too?

Album really picks up in the 2nd half, you can hear the people whistling through the last song. Great musical talent.

Not a fan on how they use the brass instruments, with all the squeaky, wheezing and high pitched sounds that come from it. I know brass instruments are essential to Jazz, but I definitely prefer how they use it in Getz/Gilberto; where it's more low-key.

Liveplatta. Gammal som gatan. Jazz. Inte riktigt min kopp. Många många många låtar.

This is a REAL challenge if you are like me and don’t really love jazz. I’ve found I only like jazz if it’s mixed with other things. Funk, singers, psychedelics, etc. But entry level, basic jazz, like Coltrane and Ellington, I really struggle with. Sometimes I can appreciate it cause it might sound pleasant or atmospheric to the point where I can enjoy it. But as a whole I’d have to say jazz is the genre I chemically don’t mix with. But that being said I can appreciate the immense amount of talent on this album. Duke is literally constantly introducing amazing musicians who have amazing timing and technical skill. But after over TWO HOURS I didn’t have any songs saved. So this album basically did nothing for me but I respect it for what it is.

Obviously an incredibly skilled musician, but not the music I would listen to.

i'm a jazz lover.... but i hated hearing the emcee throughout this and also it was long and i really just wanted to listen to B-Day so i feel like i didn't give this the shot it deserved!!!

First Jazz album. Was alright for some background music during work but not much else. Made me long for an opium den.

the fucking squealing

I typically don't like jazz and this is cozy but still does not make me want to listen to it. I get the vibes but the vibes are not for me. 3,5/10

I guess you would call this Big Band Jazz, at least I would. Not something I would listen to again. Definitely appreciate the talent, just not for me

Song: jeeps blues this song has no lyrics so that is fine i guess never heard this song because i do not listen to jazz Song: take the a train this song is good again i do not really listen to jazz and there are no lyrics too Song: Sophisticated lady this song is good i honestly like this one a little bit but it is a little goofy and no lyrics again this is the song that older movies will play

I don't like it because it has no words and its just the piano and I wouldn't listen to it cause I would get bored the second song I also don't like cause it has no words the third song I also don't like cause its not a song I would listen too

The first song is okay but I think I like the second song better. The album cover is kinda odd but I don't think its weird like some of the other album covers I've seen. It just kinda sounds like elevator music. Jazz isn't really my thing so I don't know about this album. The third song is for sure not my favorite one out of this album. I'm not sure if I would recommend this album to someone because people aren't very fond of jazz music.

He is talented but jazz stresses me out. I preferred the more structured songs with vocals like ""Day in And Day Out".

If I wanna listen to a jazz concert, I'll go to a jazz concert. Obviously amazing musicianship etc but not enough to grab me when I listened to it.

"Shocker: I didn't hate it! But the live recording made me feel like I was stuck in a stuffy auditorium. 2/5 – close enough to decent, I guess."

I'm sure that's music that requires incredible skill and talent to make, but it's just not my thing. Also I personally didn't like this particular live recording.

Too much talk

Wish i liked jazz, but I don't.

It's jazz. Live jazz.

Listen, I'm sure this was insane to hear in the 50s. There wasn't anything else to do back then so I'm sure listening to a 2 and a half hour album was amazing, but now? Now, all I can think is, "Wow, the songs are really good, why do I have to hear him introduce the songs and talk about the weather? I really don't care."

I hate jazz

If I was actually in the audience for this performance, I'm sure this would be a 5. I wasn't. I can't fault any of the playing, but this shouldn't have been experienced as an album. 2 Stars.

Oh god it was so long. 2+ hrs of Duke Ellington is too much. Maybe it would be fine as background noise but does it deserve to be in 1001 albums if it's only good for background noise...

More Big Band than Jazz.

He's a talented man, but it's not something I can easily listen to for a full album!

Twooooo hourssssssssss!!

As tough to listen to as expected.

Marginally better than the average jazz album, of which there are too many on this list.

Boring

Instrumentals were cool but never found myself getting into straight Jazz instrumentals, not for me. Talent is amazing tho.

I usually like jazz but this one just didn't hit for me.

Annoying intros. Jazz album.

It was a fun album to listen to mostly because of the look back to 1956, but I will not be seeking it out again.

I can appreciate the history but this album did not do it for me. Waaayyy too much talky talky and not enough music

Way way way too long. so much talking

Don't get it...

Look - Duke’s band is tight as hell but this didn’t do it for me. The “live” parts of the record were annoying to sit through and it was a bit too swing-y for me.

Too long, too live, too much chit chat

'Eff me. More 'effing jazz? I mean, it starts with a faithful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Please. I know for certain this is an historically important work in the annals of jazz, but it's still jazz - and there are 2 disks and even vocals. YAWN! I am really old and this museum piece predates me.

Not my ideal album, very slow, the live breaks/introductions really killed it for me.

Sorry Duke!

Oi Dude Ellington in Newport, leider isch mer hüt ned so jazzhändig zumute. Uf es 2 stündigs Live/Complete-Album scho gar ned, darum nonchalant selber eis ufs parkett g researched und mer siis 30 min Album geh, das het mer glanget. Tschüss my dukeness, gsehnd eus glaubs nüm so bald. Zwei Beef Wellington uf dich.

ZAPFE!!! ZAPFE!!!

Good musically but cannot do over 2 hours long of jazz.

I really cant review this album with objective mind. First time during this project personal feelings are so crappy that it affects this a lot. This album would have needed a better mood to concentrate into it. I recognize the talent on this but cant help.

If I understand correctly, this album holds a remarkable place in recording history, which likely explains why it’s included on this list. It’s also incredibly easy to listen to, and when someone mentions jazz, this style is exactly what comes to mind for me. That said, I nowadays lean more toward modern jazz in my personal jazz listening. Still, this album is undeniably entertaining and expertly performed—I really have no criticisms to offer.

This is #day158 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here we go with the second jazz album in a row. Ellington at Newport, an album that's almost 70 years old—crazy, right? The big band jazz takes me back to around 2011 when I was first getting into jazz on my own, so I’m at least familiar with classics like Take the 'A' Train and Tea For Two... This concert also brings to mind the Dzyga Art Center and the Jazz Bez festival in my hometown of Lviv, held at the beginning of December. But, 38 tracks on Spotify? That's too much jazz to get through, and I couldn't. I’m giving it a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day159.

the live vibes are good but 2 hours of jazz is about an hour too much

I struggled with this album. Really just not my listening preference

The musicians are great, but the bantering and audience threw me off. It's a good jazz record, but I can't see anything really impressive over other works.

Pleasant enough. I enjoyed the bit where they all seemed to kick off a bit, but that was a way in, so not sure exactly which bit. Also a lot of chatting inbetween, which all felt a bit like I was at a lecture rather than a concert. It did transport me to another time, but not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.

I only listened to the songs on the original record. No way I would listen to the extended version. This was live jazz. It didn't make me mad but by no means did I like it.

I’m not a big jazz guy, but this was pleasant. It isn’t something I would intentionally put on, but it’s fine to have in the background.

I've had a chance to listen to a bunch of Jazz on this list. I've learned over that time that I prefer a smaller group focusing on piano rather that a full band. I've also learned that I prefer a crisp clear recording rather than a live show for Jazz. Obviously Duke Ellington is one of the greatest of all time, but I was mostly bored with this album. A lot of the focus felt like it was on the horns, and some of the other instruments were washed out in the recording. I guess it's cool that I can now pick different Jazz styles that I like, but Mr. Ellington's is not for me.

Det swinger alt for meget

I mean, I'm just not that into jazz, except, sometimes, when it's live and you can see the interactions among band members. This is fine as far as it goes, but it's no more than background music for a few seconds in a bar or nightclub in a period movie. Sorry, jazz aficionados.

-I dislike live albums -Jazz is not my favorite -Entirely instrumental albums bore me -This album is too too too long

Not for me

2 - I don't think it's bad, it's just something I don't really care about. Maybe it could get a higher rating if I was in the right mood, but all this is for me is nice enough background music at best, or just boring at worst.

This would be fun at a jazz and wine festival with a lot of wine. Unfortunately I'm at work with no wine

Good music to sleep through. 2 stars or D+.

Too long 2/5

I tried, but jazz is definitely not my thing. I'm sure he's good at it, I've known his name my entire life, but it has ZERO appeal to me. "Everybody do your thing, we'll meet in the middle for a minute, then we'll wrap it up", jazz and it's freeform ways drive me bonkers since I'm not a musician. It all sounded the same, too many horns, too much orchestration. Probably impressive to see live, I love watching people jam out who are masters of their instruments, but not my kind of music. Not Top 1001, not on my list at least. 2 stars cause I'm sure someone appreciates this waaay more than I do.

Jazz.... it's the notes you don't play. This was over 2 hours long, I dont think I lasted an hour.

Not for me, Jazz at its best but not my thing

I’m sure it’s a classic if you like that kind of thing. To me it’s Tom & Jerry music.

Inoffensive big band that never really struck a chord with me throughout our time together. Maybe I find the faux-live style disingenuous? I don't know, Duke Ellington is certainly someone to be respected, but this was just stereotypical "50s music" to my ears.

This was hard to get through. The audio quality on Youtube Music is quite bad -- it might just be that that's the best quality available, but either way, it was not as enjoyable as it could have been with a good, modern quality audio track. It sounded very thin and tinny and even though the music was pretty decent, I just couldn't really hear it well. Two stars.

Hearing the introductions and small speeches was really like looking into a Time Capsule! But I’m not well versed enough in jazz for any of the tracks to stand out to me :-(

Teveel geklets

Still not old enough for jazz. I agree that Sir Duke has to be included in the 1001 list once (maybe more) but this one was a bit squeaky (and long) for me. Diminuendo In Blue is the best song despite being 14 minutes long. Broke this album into three separate fitness sessions and that seemed to work. But it’s still dated jazz (2.4*s)

Obviously a classic, signature performance. It's high twos for me as it's 'not the jazz I like'.

Not my bag

Not really my type of music…

Quite satisfying, if not my thing, it certainly was my father's thing. He loved big bands and the swaying and dancing that took place with fancy small town dance halls that thronged to this music. 2 stars. Not likely to listen to again.

I just don’t like songs without lyrics. Feels too elevators to me. I think the tunes are great and would love it if it had some words to it

A lil too jazzy for me

i am skipping all these introductions this album is long enough i do not care if it is not the 'full experience'. i am not a jazz guy so lets see how this goes. my first impression is that I will genuinely have no clue how to rate this because obviously the instruments are very impressive but I can't remove my prejudices and biases away from it - the music is very good and if I was somewhere and this was playing in the background I would not be upset and would enjoy it but I am never going to go out of my way to try and listen to this or recommend it to anyone cause it simply is not my kind of music I would say that after a while it simply just becomes more of a background music, not that it is necessarily a bad thing I apologise Mr Ellington, in another life this could easy be a 5 star album but alas it cannot be for me personally

i’m sure he’s good at what he’s doing but i don’t care for jazz

This almost put me to sleep. Jazz can be cool, but not my thing. More background music. Sorry.

Less bad jazz. Still boring.

I gave it the weekend to think about how I felt about this record. I didn't like jazz when I was in the high school jazz band, I didn't like jazz when all my friends got into, and some in fact now run a jazz bar, and you know what? I still don't like jazz. I didn't hate this album, if someone put it on I wouldn't ask them to take it off, but I'd also feel the whole time like I was on a really long elevator ride. Giving it 2 stars anyway, because I understand the influence it's had on music.

Live albums do not belong on this list, especially when they are 2 hours!! and half of the album consists of introductions of both songs and people. The actual music is fine but not exceptional, however it's barely relevant compared to the ridiculous length and constant interruptions.

Not the biggest jazz fan most of the time but I liked having this as background while playing fetch with Alfie at the park.

probably funk

As someone who played jazz for years, I'm not really sure how to "rate" jazz. Especially big band. It's not the kind of jazz I gravitate toward. This was fine, I guess, but even in its era it's a bit of a relic. Popular music had already moved to rock and roll, and jazz had mostly abandoned big band for more experimental music with smaller groups, or fusion. It's still good listen, but it's kind of like going to U2 at the Vegas orb. It's not bad, but it's definitely not the cutting edge.

This is better than most of the jazz albums we've listened to. But 2 hours? TWO HOURS OF THE SAME SONG?

Its okay, but when would I actually listen to this? Never.

Fully instrumental jazz music, live. Look I enjoy the sax as much as the next guy but this wasn't particularly interesting.

A fine jazz album. Nothing I'd really return for, but it was pleasant while it was on

I enjoyed a few tracks where Duke Ellington was able to make the trumpet moan like a person, this really impressed me. The album itself was quite lengthy and I really wasn't able to distinguish between one track or another. It must be the genre itself and someone who truly loves Jazz would probably appreciate this album a lot more. All in all it was good but I was ready for it to be over about halfway through.

I only listened to disc 1, I liked some of the music but found the introduction/talking tracks disrupted the flow of the music personally.

I’m going to give it two stars, because the musicians are so talented, but this wasn’t an enjoyable listen. This type of music just isn’t my cup of tea

Great jazz, terrible recording.

Long one. Nothing really stood out aside from the intros

Not really my favorite

Never a huge jazz fan and this wad just ok.

No disrespect to Mr. Ellington. I just do not like jazz

I certainly have heard of Duke Ellington and listened to a song of his before - I would not be able to pick a song of his out….ever. That being said - I do really appreciate and enjoy the music. I’m envious of the talent of these musicians. This is music I would definitely prefer hearing live or maybe as background music.

Great music. Very long. Didn't need all the commentary.

# 256 : DID NOT LISTEN - Couldn't be bothered, way too long and drab for a Monday…

Just atmospheric music! Not a bad listen but left no strong opinions on me and probably won’t be coming back as a result. I’m sure it would be great to hear live in a cool venue, though. Maybe not quite a 1001 greatest album for me, but definitely better than the last one 😵‍💫

★★½

I like jazz. I don't like the live aspect of this album. Makes it feel like a well made band concert. I appreciate this being made, but I prefer Motown and the funk that came after it. It's too long and I don't think has the dynamic and exciting quality that jazz should.

I just don't get this music. I am sure the experts are correct and it is as great as they say, but it really does not move me in any way.

Live album so loses a point

I am not a huge listener of jazz and I do not like live albums. I absolutely hate how the hats on this album overpower every other instrument when they play, it's all I can focus on as they are so loud over everything else and I am not a fan of the talking and cheering between songs. The second part of the album on Spotify was better as the hats weren't as loud. I did not listen to tracks 9-18 on disc 2 as they are not part of the original show according to Wikipedia. I will give this album a 2/5 because the music would be ok if the hats weren't as loud and if there wasn't talking after every song.

Every song sounds the same. Just cannot get into this music.

I'm sure in 1956 this was the best thing going. Almost 70 years later though and I'm just kind of bored. Way too long of an album to finish. 4/10 (2/5)

I only listened to the first part of the album, it was so incredibly long. The music itself was nice, but again, it just get tiresome with all the introduction and small talk between songs etc. that comes with a live album. As with other jazz albums, it's hard to really find any song that stands out, especially when it's live. It all melds together. And it was an OK listening session, but I prefer actual studio albums to 2 hour long live sessions.

I'm not doubting the Duke's talent - this was just too long and boring for me.

Rest the album, but long and boring

This is a complete slog to get through. It's got some really good jazz, but an hour & a half more than I care to listen, plus you've got to put up with him talking inbetween every song... Ugh, I'm sure it was an amazing live show to be at, but as a live album, it just became a tough listen.

It was way too long and got bored on track 8

It’s good for what is it but that isn’t something I am going to listen to again.

A part of me really wants to give this more than 2 stars, but I don't think I can. 48/100

It's a no from me I'm afraid

I liked the piano and brushed drums, but a lot of the trumpet just wasn't for me. Perhaps if I hung out jazz bars in the 50s....

Trad Jazz just ain't my bag baby

It’s fine, not my cup of tea, the musicianship is very impressive, but the live atmosphere kills it for me

neat music and i respect the talent but its not something that i would find myself listening to

Look…I don’t mind jazz, but I also don’t love it. I also don’t typically like live albums. So what do I do with this? 2.5

Not hater of jazz, but definitely not my thing. And also, live record ...

2 plus hours of jazz is far too much. Especially in audio only formats. Seeing this live would be something else and probably far more enjoyable. I don't really know what to say here... The live aspect is fine.. But the drawn out introduction to songs makes this album feel even longer than they are. Top musicianship going on. Unfortunately, it's just boring listening to it. First few songs, I was engaged... But 2 hours of this was very tedious. Took me 2 sit throughs to get through this as I was bored 20 minutes into each listen, and had to force my attention.

Too much “jazz”

Best song - I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good

Jazz album. I don’t really know enough to tell the amazing from non It’s live but I’m not a fan of the speeches in the middle In terms of music like I’d be happy to have this play at some cafe I was in, but I wouldn’t Shazam it. I guess that should make it 2/3***. I’ll give it 2 because I’m not scared of being told I’m uncultured by the pointy heads

# Playlist track - Take the "A" train # Notes - I'm into jazz, and also into jazz performances, but I couldn't get to the end of this one, despite trying twice. - There are so many introductions, and announcements, and clapping and talking. - Albums stretches for over 2 hours, but you can never get in the zone, because you're going to be interrupted by people taking.

I might like this album, if it wasn't 2 hours long and had less screeching trumpet in it.

Performed wonderfully but I probably won't go back, too big band for me, and too many introductions. Really rips sometimes though.

tea for two, pt III

to answer Barry b Bensons question. No.

Þetta fellur undir liðinn "læv albúm sem ég fíla ekki".

Not really for me, I don't love jazz but could see why jazz heads would enjoy it. He should defs ditch the first track though.

First two songs felt really interminable but the rest was better Update: except the squealing at the end

Long album, and not one I'd revisit

I mean some of it was alright but so many decent tracks were ruined by horrible screeching squeals during the last 30-45 seconds wtf is that

Not really into the big band sound, despite the high perceived quality of this record

its long, its jazz but its nothing too entrancing, the liveness of it all is fun but i think it leans too far into it really. I can appreciate the art, but its not for me.

Fun listen, just dated

Jazz is not my cuppa.

needs to be remastered, sound is not good

Technically extremely impressive, but overall this style of jazz doesn't really do it for me.

Jazz gonna jazz.

Okay. Not my thing.

Jazz is a genre of music which peaked at a time when large swathes of its audience, and in all likelihood the musicians themselves, were regularly getting hammered on liquor distilled in bathtubs, and it really shows. Having said that, I quite enjoyed this, but mainly as background noise. The more I focused on it, the less I liked it. This is music meant to be heard while doing the Charleston in a speak-easy with some flapper girls, not listened to while sat working at a computer.

Making some brass instrument sound like a voice is impressive but ultinatly limited in appeal. Music from another age hard to connect with but you know good.

It’s a live instrumental that for 1956

I don't appreciate jazz as i don't understand it, great but not for me

Blah, I guess it was kind of pleasant but I'm just not interested.

Definitely old timey (40s and 50s) jazz. Not my music at all.

Dideldidudeldei

För långt. 50-talsjazz är inte jättespännande.

I don't care for live albums, but I do like jazz.

Ziemlich langweilige Fahrstuhlmusik, leicht nervend gegen Ende

Fun to hear jazz for the first time. But it will be hard to come back if listening online

Not my thing

It's good but jazz

With all the praise this received I was ready to give this a high score. But I just don't get it. Multiple times in this record he just squeals at me for no reason. And why is this over 2 hours long? It's not good. As an I production to the form or as a first Duke.

Somehow hard to get through

Sure, Duke Ellington is absolutely great. 2h of a live record? Absolutely not. [0090/1001]

Good live performance, but not a good album I would say. Just too long for the album format. I get why it's here as it's a historic performance, but I did not listen to the entire two hours

Didn’t love it, although to be fair I wasn’t paying super close attention when I had it playing. But the good thing is I let Spotify keep playing after the album finished, and I came across some really cool jazz stuff. Idk I think I see like a little jazz phase coming up for me…. it’s great shower music. It doesn’t demand your full focus for the entire duration of each song, so you can float in and out while you think about other stuff (?)

The recording quality made it really difficult to enjoy.

Generelt kedelig jazz. Måske er det godt - ikke for mig. Der sker ikke meget

I mean, it’s obviously good for what it is. Just wasn’t for me.

A bit old to me

Not a particular jazz fan but this exceeded my expectations which were pretty low anyway. 2*

Nice enough but too long and too live.

I tried. It just didn't light my candle. Great musicianship and atmosphere from 1956, but I couldn't get in that groove. I'll probably revisit this album at some point but not right now.

Very talented musicians but I can’t get into it. The album is way too long and boring.

Nope, no jazz for me

Ok, not really my thing

Who has time to listen to 38 tracks in a day?

good but so long it lost it’s fun

way too fucking long and i love some duke ellington pieces but this one aint it

It's jazz so.... Not my favourite

Only listened to the 1st half of it as I am not crazy on Jazz and this went on for way too long.

Not really a big fan of jazz music.

Went by without too much tedium, won't listen again.

Elevator music.

Not for me

I was excited to get this, but really it was the most trad jazz I could imagine, and lasted about four or five days. Started to feel like I was going a bit mad towards the end. Maybe that's the point?

I’ve never really been a big band fan. However, I definitely enjoyed some of the slower pieces over the faster ones.

*didn’t listen as i had no time but did listen to an earlier record of his so will just rate 2 stars*

Not a jazz fan but the talent here is undeniable.

Ok, this seems like it was a hoot to watch and the recording is very good. The horns are very present and high fidelity. Polished arrangements. For jazz, it feels meticulously orchestrated and oddly constrained. Like jazz in an expensive suit. Mannered. Except for an extended drum solo at the end. Each song feels like an exhibition. Can comfortably say that this, as well respected and heralded as it is, is not my jam. Is this the pinnacle of urbane jazz? I don’t know. All I know is that I’ve tried listening to Duke Ellington before, even had a CD, and it left me mostly cold. I can see why bebop and less-buttoned up strains of jazz followed this stuff. I am, however, deeply ignorant here. The thing is I do enjoy big band stuff with singers, but just can’t get down with this.

Not a fan of this one really.

- I appreciate that the in between actions are clearly labelled and separated from the music - Decent lounge jazz but nothing I'd go back to

- I’d be lying if I said I listened to all 2 hours of this - enjoyable jazz but it’s not something I would typically listen to

i bet this got people turnt in 1956.

C Festival Junction - 2 Blues to Be There - 3 Newport Up - 1 Jeep’s Blues - 3 Diminuendo In Blue - 3

I enjoy the vibe of the album but it running over two hours is a bit too much for me. I’m not a big listener of jazz music, so I can’t appreciate as much as big fans of the genre.

I can appreciate the talent involved and the place in music history, but I just have a really hard time enjoying '50s music because it sounds so dated at this point. There's some really great musicianship here though and the story of the '99 reissue is quite interesting.

OK, but not my thing

Jazz just ain’t it

Kelpo kikkailua ja kerran pyörähti ongelmitta läpi. Ei jäänyt kaipaamaan lisää.

Ilta jazzklubilla menis tän parissa, +2h työajojen aikana puudutti.

Horns are great, but not for extended periods of time. That ringing in your ears just never goes away.

Great swing to this but I can’t stand the tone of those trumpets: shrill and stressful. Couldn’t make it all the way through.

The only Duke Ellington album in my collection. The music is pretty inoffensive and easy-to-listen-to jazz, but still in my view, live albums should not be included in a list like these, even if they are from the 50s.

It’s just whatever not for me but not garbage

Music is good, but I don't like live albums.

An interesting concept, but the 'fake live' aspect really ruined it for me I think. Def there is some great musicianship and a whole bunch of musical arrangement/structure/performance that I just don't understand haha this 40's swing band stuff just escapes me still. There are a few moments on here that are a bit more 'blue' that seem to have aged better and are interesting. And speaking as someone who has played a brass instrument (poorly) I know how hard it is to make them sound /good/ like this - these folks were dedicated to their craft and performing at the top of their game. Unfortunately this music just doesn't speak to me.

Didn’t really listen - not spending 2hrs 7 mins of life on this.

I'm listening to the OG recording as I'm struggling to find the 1990 version on YouTube music (and I'm a free user of Spotify so listening is difficult to an album unless I'm on the web player at my pc.) I'm listening to this on a sunny summer's day riding home in the car from a family holiday. [Skin Deep] is a drumming masterclass. Textured, varied and expressive - the drummer has super chops. The rest? Kinda faded to the background. I think the issue with me and jazz is - I don't feel it. I don't know good or bad jazz, I don't know what I like or don't like. I don't have the experience or the context. Or maybe I never will? I know however that black metal started off like this for me - and is now my favourite genre - so maybe there's hope? I do know for sure - I dislike live albums and this record made me feel irritated and frustrated. Maybe in 1000 albums time I'd change my tune, but for now, this isn't for me.

Genuinely so boring I had to skip. I’m not a fan of instrumentals. Elevator music.

hated every single second of this

Jazz? No thanks

An abomination. Staggering to think people listen to this voluntarily.

First listen

Just not me. Sure he’s a nice fella but an awful entertainer.

Not my taste … respect for the artist , a legendary musician! Also I’m not fond of live recordings ..

I couldn't finish it, I haaate trumpets

I hate rating this one so low.... but the whole point of me going through this list is to see what I like. I do not like this. Couldn't get past the first song. Maybe it's the best album in the history of jazz, but it's lost on me.

got bored

2/10- Mike and Josie Duke didn’t understand the assignment

I knew because I got a 5 star album yesterday, I would get something I hated today. I was right!! I got my “favorite” genre of music - JAZZ! I didn’t like this, but it was better than some of the previous jazz albums I’ve had to listen to because it was more big band than straight jazz.

2/10 Not a jazz guy, sorry :(

LONG asf. all i could hear was speaking and 🎺

Don't like it

I’m sure it’s great, stellar outfit but I just can’t get into jazz

Larguísimo. Me duermo en vivo.

i'm not a big fan of jazz, i don't really listen to it, so this album to me sounds like any other jazz performance. i can't really tell what makes jazz good (or bad), unless i hear something new or innovative in the songs that works really well with the already established sounds of the genre. but this record just sounds like the most stereotypical jazz album to me. this album is what you think of when someone says the word 'jazz'. and maybe that's a good thing, i guess it shows that you're really good at the genre that you are performing. anyways, 1/5 because i felt like i was actively suffering and felt no enjoyment while listening to this.

atp i've come to the conclusion i'm not a fan of jazz. like, at all

Absolutely not

Boring

Dur à écouter quand même…

On a drizzly walk through Southwark this faded a bit into the background… Skin Deep the best track and pushed this up to a 1.5 for me

Capaz soy yo pero its pretty boring for me. No lo entiendo todavia.

Some really cool moments of drums, saxophone and trumpet but nothing really grabbed my attention. Can’t see myself returning to this one

Jazz, not for me

Not my taste. I need words

Ok jazz still isn't for me and lots of talking and introducing because of it being a live recording
