Good times
Groovy dark disco.
Men bredda perspektivet lite, lyssna på stråk-arret i "Will you cry.. "What about me" Hysénklass
its cool and funky and fun as hell. The bassline in Good Times has stuck with me long after I stopped listening, even just the guitar work is fantastic. I dont understand why disco got so much hatred if this is what you got to listen to.
Hell yeah man! Makes me want to dance in a club in the 80’s and do bumps of coke in the bathroom off a bankers dick. Nile Rodger’s guitar playing is iconic and these songs are timeless. The first song says it best “These are the good times”
it fucking rocks, we all know it, we all love Nile Rodgers, we've all heard the bass line from Good Times a million times in various forms and we're not sick of it because it's probably the best bass line of all time
### In-Depth Review: *Risqué* by CHIC (1979) Released at the tail end of disco's commercial reign, *Risqué* is CHIC’s third studio album and arguably their most refined and thematically layered work. Produced by the powerhouse duo **Nile Rodgers** and **Bernard Edwards**, the album is a masterclass in groove-based sophistication, combining lush orchestration, tight musicianship, and subtly subversive lyricism. While “Good Times” dominates its legacy, *Risqué* is far more than a singles album—it’s a cohesive, emotionally nuanced statement that helped shape the future of dance, hip-hop, and pop music. --- ## 🎶 **Music & Production** Musically, *Risqué* is a tour de force of **funk-disco fusion**, with jazz-influenced chord progressions and orchestral flourishes that elevate it above standard disco fare. The rhythm section—Edwards’ iconic basslines, Rodgers’ percussive “chucking” guitar style, and Tony Thompson’s crisp drumming—forms the backbone of the album. The use of **live strings and brass**, arranged by Gene Orloff, adds a cinematic depth without overwhelming the groove. Tracks like “My Feet Keep Dancing” and “My Forbidden Lover” showcase complex arrangements and syncopated rhythms that feel both organic and meticulously crafted. The production is **clean, warm, and spacious**, allowing each element to breathe—an approach that was forward-thinking for 1979 and still feels fresh today. --- ## 🖋️ **Lyrics & Themes** Beneath the glossy surface, *Risqué* explores **themes of emotional detachment, forbidden love, betrayal, and existential anxiety**. The lyrics often juxtapose upbeat music with darker emotional undertones, creating a sense of **ironic detachment** that’s central to CHIC’s aesthetic. - **“Good Times”** is the most famous example: a seemingly celebratory anthem that subtly hints at economic despair and escapism. Lines like *“You silly fool, you can’t change your fate”* undercut the song’s optimism with a wink of cynicism. - **“My Forbidden Lover”** deals with taboo desire, using minimalistic, almost haiku-like lyrics to evoke tension and longing. - **“Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)”** is a heartbreak ballad that closes the album with emotional vulnerability, contrasting the emotional restraint of the earlier tracks. - **“A Warm Summer Night”** is a lush, melancholic piece about unfulfilled longing, with sparse lyrics that leave space for interpretation. This lyrical subtlety is part of what makes *Risqué* so enduring—it invites repeated listens and rewards close attention. --- ## 🌐 **Influence & Legacy** The album’s influence is **monumental**: - “Good Times” provided the **bassline for “Rapper’s Delight”**, effectively birthing commercial hip-hop. - The groove also inspired **Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”**, and has been **sampled hundreds of times** across genres. - Artists like **Daft Punk, Madonna, David Bowie**, and **The Weeknd** have cited CHIC as a major influence, particularly in their ability to blend emotional depth with danceable music. - *Risqué* helped **legitimize disco as an art form**, pushing back against the “disco sucks” narrative that was often rooted in racism and homophobia. --- ## ✅ **Pros** - **Exceptional musicianship**: Edwards, Rodgers, and Thompson are locked in throughout. - **Innovative production**: Layered, live instrumentation with orchestral elements. - **Thematic depth**: Emotional complexity beneath a danceable surface. - **Cultural impact**: Helped shape hip-hop, house, and pop music. - **Timeless appeal**: Still sounds fresh and influential over 40 years later. --- ## ❌ **Cons** - **Repetitiveness**: Some tracks rely heavily on groove and repetition, which may not appeal to listeners seeking melodic variety. - **Vocal subtlety**: The restrained vocals, while stylistically fitting, may feel emotionally distant to some. - **Pacing**: The album is short (just 7 tracks), and the sequencing can feel front-loaded due to the dominance of “Good Times.” - **Genre stigma**: Disco’s historical baggage may lead some to undervalue the album’s artistic merit. --- ## 🏁 **Final Verdict** *Risqué* is not just a disco album—it’s a **conceptual, sonic, and emotional journey** that transcends its genre. It’s a snapshot of late-’70s glamour and anxiety, wrapped in some of the most infectious and sophisticated grooves ever recorded. Whether you're into funk, disco, pop, or hip-hop, this album is **essential listening**—a masterstroke of production, songwriting, and subtext that continues to influence generations of artists.
Funky R&B perfection.
This album is silk over steel. It’s glitter, discipline, and danger — the sound of the disco era realizing it’s too good-looking to last. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards built something so precise it feels effortless; every bassline walks smoother than most people think. It’s luxurious, but haunted. You can hear the walls closing in on the dance floor — the lights are still flashing, but everyone knows the party’s ending.Glamour on the edge of collapse; the groove never dies, it just starts sweating. Rating: 4.9/5 Favorite Track: “Good Times” — ironically titled, considering it became the national anthem for denial.
!!!!TOP!!!!
"Risqué" is the third studio album by American disco band Chic. Disco, soul and funk are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah man. The album is cited as defining the disco era and being highly influential in the disco movement overall as well as in hip hop, art rock and new wave. The album songs were written and also produced by bandmembers Nile Rodgers (guitar, vocals) and Bernard Edwards (bass, vocals). Other core bandmembers included Tony Thompson (drums), Alfa Anderson (vocals) and Luci Martin (vocals). There was a host of other contributing vocalists and musicians. Commercially, the album reached #5 in the US and #29 in the UK and, critically, it had wide-spread acclaim. The album kicks off with the first single "Good Times." Piano, the guitar and funky bass riffs, underlying strings, handclaps and, of course, the disco dance beat. Co-lead singers Luci Martin and Alfa Anderson. Obviously, a great groove which really extends in this 8-minute album version. There are both bass and guitar solos. The lyrics reference the Great Era-Milton Anger song "Happy Days Are Here Again" and are used as a hidden way to comment on the then economic conditions in the US. Edwards joins Martin and Anderson on lead vocals in "My Feet Keep Dancing." Strings are added to the base Chic group. More smooth R&B in a pop song. A lyrically lighter song and tap dancing is at the end. The second single "My Forbidden Love" gets the dance back going. Stronger, louder female vocals. A passionate desire for someone where it's an impossible for a relationship to exist. This album is anchored in rock-solid production (strings, keyboards, horns, piano) with the band's core of great guitar, bass and drums...that classic Chic sound Yeah, there's the disco dance beat but there are also soulful ballads, R&B, just plain pop, rock and jazz influences and even a P-Funk influenced song. I liked the album versions of the singles; the band really jams out. Besides maybe two songs, there's a darker edge to the lyrics: forbidden love, unrequited love, losing someone and pain. This is a classic sound and a great album. It's easy to hear its influence.
Stone cold classic. So much electronic and hip hop was inspired by and sampled from this ONE album.
This is some of the funkiest, tightest musicianship I've ever heard, and they stay locked in with the same groove for minutes on end so that the people can keep dancing. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are the greats that several generations and genres studied in the decades following, and it's no wonder: this record is a production masterpiece. I can imagine this would be a perfect set for disco night and am very glad I was introduced to it. 4/5 + 1 more bonus point for inspiring the birth of both House music and commercial rap. PS. I learned that "disco sucks" was more about racism and homophobia than it was about music.
Some upbeat songs, some slower songs, exactly my taste
Top top top : )))
Nostalgic disco vibe
These songs are fun though perhaps a bit longwinded if you’re not on the dance floor. Still, it puts me in that weird timeless 70s dreamscape that one could wake up to discover is a simulation in a postmodern cyber-noir film. Peak disco.
Very catchy and fun! Another excellent album. Perfect for a hungover Sunday.
I don't hate disco.
Wimpy boy at the renaissance fair-core
Amazing sound
Just a sensational listen truthfully. Not perfect, but then again, is any album truly perfect? 5/5
Nile Rodgers is the man, and Chic totally holds up.
It's very rare for an album to have such great musicianship, performances, and melodies all packaged together with perfect production values. 5.0/5.0: Iconic
What a fantastic album. Nile Rodger’s guitar and Bernard Edwards’ bass playing is divine - and the orchestration! It’s incredibly lush and funky. The singing too is fantastic, and given that this essentially paved the road for hip hop, this deserves 5 stars.
There are three things I love in this life: 1) Nile Rogers 2) disco 3) songs that are twice as long as they probably need to be
Good music. Fun.
Loved it. Never heard the full album before. High standard deep cut disco is always good by me. Brilliant guitar and bass, solid tunes. Will go into regular rotation.
Gorgeous disco album
Amazing timeless album!
A Warm Summer Night is perfect for just that. Feels lovely. Great album. Short but very sweet
Classic and will likely always be so-5 stars
GOOD TIMES 🕺 THESE ARE THE GOOD TIMES 🕺 LEAVE YOUR CARES BEHIND 🕺
"Risque" by CHIC is undeniably one of the greatest albums of the Disco era, capturing the vibrant essence of the late 1970s with its infectious grooves and sophisticated production. The album not only solidified CHIC's status as pioneers of Disco but also left a lasting impact on various genres, influencing artists across funk, pop, and even hip-hop. Its timeless tracks, characterized by slick instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics, continue to inspire musicians today, showcasing the enduring legacy of Disco music in the evolution of contemporary sound.
I rate good times a 5 star because I've listened to this song many times and I liked it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I rate A warm summer night a 5 star because I've listened to this song many times and I liked it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I rate cant stand to love you a 5 star because I've listened to this song many times and I liked it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
How can one man go so hard on the bass this much that it didn't rip a hole in the space-time continuum? Roger's guitar scratches the unscratchable itch. The vocals are liquid satin and glitter. Undeniable classic from beginning to end.
Hell yeah, I loved this almost as much as C'est Chic. More tap dance solos, please!
Such incredible bass lines...
This is probably the most unexpected album I've loved. The songs aren't bops and yet they are? The power of disco✨
ok, fine, fuck it, just about any time Nile Rodgers is involved, give it the five, what the fuck ever,
There’s a lot of reviews that have mentioned the lyrics, but even having read some before listening it didn’t prepare me for how out of pocket some of them are. This is getting a five purely because my experience listening to A Warm Summer Night was something to behold. I thought I heard in the background ‘Te quiero, Papi’ and thought, oh that’s weird, wonder what that lyric is really, kept hearing it to the point I thought I was going mad, and then the last line of the song is ‘Te quiero, Papi’ in a really unnecessary stage whisper. Perfect, no notes. And then in Can’t Stand To Love You you get the double whammy of ‘Little Punk, do it for me or I’ll number your days’ and ‘You’d think I were into S&M.’ Where did that come from?
When did clubs stop playing this?? It's literally designed for dancing!
Loved the disco album, what a way to start the morning. Even gave it a second listen, I was not aware of many songs by chic but I knew I loved the ones I’d heard. I was not disappointed with the rest of the album either, it may not have the same revere as a Bob Dylan or David Bowie album but for my personal taste this is a much better album than any other theirs
Every track here hits the spot.
Pure, slinky, glitter-soaked disco perfection. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers were an unstoppable team.
More good quality recordings.
A really good album, I liked Good Times, My Forbidden Lover and Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song) the most.
chic are the best they just groove so hard how can u not like this shit
Five all day long!
Oh man perfect pumping disco and divine bass lines - can’t fault any of this album: it’s the quintessential Nile Rogers’ record.
very exciting album, i like disco like this, groovy
Excellent disco album, every song was nice! Definitely a vibe.
This is perfection. Every album should be like this. Short, a consistent theme and FUNKY AF!
4.5. A bit too repetitive at times.
An entire party in one album
This album gets 5 stars for the bassline in Good Times alone. I enjoyed the rest of the album just as much. The whole thing has a great groove. I never understood the Disco backlash, but I was very young when it was popular. I always enjoyed it as a style of music. Some of the outfits were a bit much, but I still want a pair of bell-bottoms.
Very nice pop album.
These first three Chic albums man. So good. Opening with 8 minutes of Good Times. It's just ridiculous. That bass. Surely the shortest 8 minutes ever. The rest might not have standouts as obvious as "At Last I Am Free", but it's consistently very high quality and gorgeous.
Full of things that became big hits, but there's a surprising amount of slower, jazzy grooves here too that I really didn't expect. It's a mature and confident third album.
Love it. Good background music.
Absolutely fantastic. Still have the album press aswell as in digital form. Anything that Nile Rodgers produces can't be bad.
Millions of listens, millions of grooves. Thank you
I can hear this title just by seeing it
Great! Love this album. An old favorite
It's not as good as C'est Chic. But it is still brilliant. You can see the line through this to their work with Diana Ross in the 80s. Everything they did was brilliant really.
Not much to say here other than this is three of the finest musicians in the world at the top of their game. Their sound is surely one of the most influential ever.
Aww fuck yessssss. So funky.
Highlights: Good Times, A Warm Summer Night, My Feet Keep Dancing, My Forbidden Lover, What About Me Chic saw the disco they pioneered be debased into parody and had to show the world once again how to do it right. A great, yet unfortunately timed swan song to the disco era, as the infamous demolition night occurred literally 2 weeks prior to the album's release. Admittedly not too experienced with the genre (and funk/soul), but I can't really find any major flaws here so I'm feeling the good times.
Loved this album. It's all about the rhythm, It makes you want to go dancing. Loved Neil Rodgers guitars. "Good Times" is a classic, as well as the rest of the album. Highlight: "My Feet Keep Dancing".
If you are following my reviews, you will note that I tend to like my music and bit raw and noisy, not too polished. But all that goes out the window with Chic, here at the height of their powers. I always keep a couple of Chic singles in my DJ crates, because they are guaranteed floor fillers. I confess that I've never listened to this whole album before. It's disco, but funkier than a lot of disco. The rhythm section are always int he pocket, the orchestrations are classy and compelling, the vocals cool and classy. The whole album is classy, cool, smooth and funky, almost irresistible on the dance floor. This really is peak disco. But the really important track is Good Times. A #1 single in its own right, but the influence is enormous. The bassline is one of the cornerstones of hip hop, sampled a zillion times, most notably in Rapper's Delight. It's a terrific song, and has a massive footprint on musical history. The whole album is pretty schmick and I enjoy it, but really the only track, that you must, must, MUST hear is Good Times. Five stars for that song alone.
Clams on the half shell, and roller skates! roller skates! These are the Good Times. What else does a party need? As excited as I was to listen to this album, there are some tedious moments. It gets a tad repetitive for such a short album. Apple Music skipped "A Warm Summer Night" the first time through. When I started playing it my heart kind of sank a little. It's the sort of slow sensuous song that made me ill when I was a kid...and to be honest still does. However, the extended silence at the end of the six minutes of smoldering passion, finishing with an echo-y "te quiero.......papi!" made me laugh out loud and brought me joy. A string section and tap sequence made "My Feet Keep Dancing" my favorite by far. I love the aspirations of the narrator who wants to go to space or play a good game of golf. Side 2 isn't remarkable, but who cares, it's Chic! Yay!
If not for the love of CHIC from my childhood, then this album (that I had never heard before today) probably would have been rated lower. But I could not bring myself to mark anything other than 5.
A delightful dance party. More like this please.
Wow this album gives us some iconic disco but also has more storyline that I ever noticed before. Listened to this several times today and it just gets better and better.
bangs
laid back disco
meh
loved it
This feels like the swan's song of disco ... it was 1979 and disco was losing its popularity. Economic times were hard as well. This album encapsulates the entire genre, and does it so well I can't stop listening to it! Peppy beats but the lyrics are sad. The band is TIGHT. The songwriting is TIGHT. Musical and production skill practically oozes from this album. I love it. 5/5
In a wierd piece of synchronicity, I got this album to listen to on the day a local venue announced Chic are playing an outdoor gig in my town thus July. Snapped up tickets straight away.
good beats super danceable
A hidden gem and the kind of album I’m in this project for. Groovy, funky perfection that so well done. Will be coming back.
Half of these songs I love, the other half are timeless in nature and are beyond convention. Its strangely positive, its simplicity is spiritual, but takes a strange downward turn to melancholic darkness on the B-side. An amazing record. 4.5 rounded up.
Amazing, groovy, fantastic, definitely listen again
Disco-soul-funk. Un megahit. Venga, un 5.
🙏🏻
Awesome
Such a chill music
Blast from the past! Loved it.
Mesmerizing
1979 - Disco; Funk; Soul music; Rhythm and blues; Jazz; Samba
Nile Rodgers is a guitar genius. Most of tbe songs on this album are more or less interchangeable, but he invented the new disco soynd so even though it's not what I would choose to listen to, it deserves 5 stars.
Funky, in a good way.
Good Times!! This is a album full of peak 70's disco boogie funk goodness.
Had some fun with this one
Holy shit? So incredibly lush and smooth. Had Good Times liked, liked every other song off rip. Will you cry being the second least streamed song is a travesty. My first 5!
Obviously a core record, designed to make you shake tha bootay
Disco-soul-funk. Un megahit. Venga, un 5.
Absolute corker
love this! these are the 70s disco vibes i'm here for! love the instrumentals having orchestral sounds as well as nice drums and guitar, that's one of my favorite things about the genre. Good Times is of course a classic, and I know it so it stands out already, but I enjoyed all the other songs as well!
This was thoroughly enjoyable. Soulful, funky, it has it all. Loved it!
Så er der sgu dømt dansevenligt disco! Kort og genialt
Good TIME!!!
Loved it! Super funky and great with the new setup at home. Amazing to hear the clear line of sight towards the bands that would this album would go on to influence. Definitely putting this one on high rotation.
Todas las canciones me gustaron bastante, excepto "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)". 9.5/10.
love love love YESSS funkaay disco monday morning I am feeeeling it
Dancy
bops
Just testing something else: <a href="https://mastodon.social/explore">surely not</a>
Very fun album with one of the most iconic dance songs of all time. The bass lines throughout stand out as particularly excellent. Notably weaker B side, but still worth a full llisten. Top tracks: Good Times, A Warm Summer Night, My Feet Keep Dancing
First disco album! 4/5
C'est chic
Chic are truly the kings of disco, and Risqué is one of the strongest proofs of that. While listening I felt pure joy and energy — it’s so funky, groovy, and soulful that it’s almost impossible to sit still. The basslines are thick and incredible (Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were on another level), the rhythms are tight and infectious, and the whole album just makes you want to move your body. The production is smooth, classy, and endlessly danceable without ever losing that deep groove. It’s sophisticated disco at its absolute peak — sexy, joyful, and full of life. Risqué is a masterpiece of the genre. If you want to hear disco done at the highest level, this is essential listening. One of the best disco albums ever made.
Nile Rodgers always gets me going
Another great time listening to this; for some reason reminds me of my early childhood.
Good groove, good beat.
Not amazing but a fun funky beat. It was a little one note and didn't expand on the sound too much but overall I liked it.
This was a fun groovy disco party. Good Times is a classic and I can see My Feet Keep Dancing making it into my ‘dance like no one’s watching’ playlist. I don’t have one of those, but I probably should.
Older music starts getting to grow on me, especially the jazzier stuff. Auto shuffle brought me down an 80s sound similar to this, very much a high 4
Buen disco, todos los temas disfrutables. Sape
Untold numbers of late gen Xers and early millenials must have been conceived to this album. A great reminder that even when times are tough, especially when times are tough, you should dress up, dance, forget about life for a while and love. And don’t forget about your ladies needs
Tuesday, 24 June, 2026 Nile Rodgers is a god of hooks, beats, and rhythms.
I understand why the disco songs were long, and it actually is massively important to the birth of Hip-Hop, but as a listening experience I dunno if you need 8 mins of Good Times. But it would be churlish to say this album isn’t just a load of fun. Liked the slower moments too.
This was fun. I grooved with every song. I do think a few beats got repetitive, but overall I enjoyed this.
Essensen av disco. Sterk 4
Got into this little beauty / took me back to the dance floor of my youth, great band - played the album twice
1) A Warm Summer Night 2) Good Times 3) Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)
One FANTASTIC tune gets almost all the stars here. The rest is, well, okay.
Grooovy
I’m a rocker by birth in the same way I’m a Canadian. It’s my musical nationality, but that doesn’t mean I’m always proud of it. Many rockers still like to reference the disco sucks movement of the late 70s. Shut up already. It was 45 years ago. Also, why are you so offended by disco. I think I have an idea, but I digress. Chic is amazing. The guitar of Nile Rodgers is cool, but that bass guitar is what really captures my attention. It’s no wonder so many people have sampled it.
Funky AF. Made my 20km cycle to work feel like one big dance party.
Actually quite good
It's classy disco (all in the name)
A good album with a couple of songs I did not know. Its disco and chill at the same time. Pretty Chic !
4 Classic
FUNKY. should be the standard for disco
I liiiik eit
Kyllä muuten groovaa. Soitto toimii, laulu toimii, miksaus toimii, kuulostaa vaan todella hyvältä. Vähän pidemmän päälle rupes tökkimään, mutta sopivina annoksina kovinkin hyvä.
It’s not perfect but pretty close
It's excellent
Disco fun!
These are the good times
We’re now into the second half of the project and what a great way to start it. Between the two Chic albums and Sister Sledge I’m loving a bit of Nile Rogers.
#931. This shit fucks a lot harder than I expected it to. I could definitely snort too much coke and dance all night to this. 4/5: who said disco was dead?
I've said it before but it beats repeating; Bernard Edwards was a king. His bass just makes this great.
Good party album
just classic disco grooves
Feel 8/10:Very Earth, Wind, & Fire feeling Length 6/10: 7 songs at about 5 minutes per song Musicality 7/10: Great bass and synths Flow 8/10: There's one transition that had me shocked Understandability 7/10: No Story and some songs make no sense to me but it’s mostly clear Overall 8/10: Very good album. I love how this album plays throughout and what they do
Good disco, funk album. The album itself was a fine length but some songs were drawn out a bit too long but that's more to do with the genre and intended environment for this type of music. I love Nile Rodgers so it was an enjoyable listen overall
LONG LIVE DISCO 🗣📣🔥
good af
Chocked full of smooth funk and groove and with fantastic production and playing, every instrument is crisp and balanced plus there's so much space in the mix, it's such a rewarding listen, my head hasn't stopped bobbing Turns out I know many of these songs already, beyond the obvious _Good Times_. The whole thing is just effortlessly cool with great tune after great tune and at just over half an hour is incredibly economical.
Hell yeah. Such tight grooves, you don't even feel it. You're too busy dancing to care.
I don't know how people can dance to Disco. I just find it really relaxing. It's one of the few overly polished music genres I consistently like, mostly because of how relaxing it is. This one really doesn't stray too far from the norm for the genre, but it also does it the best out of any Disco album I've gotten on the list so far. Special credit to that bass player, he's doing twice as much as anyone else at any given time and it's fun to listen to him go off in the background on every song.
Love it. Proper disco.
Loving these grooves, but a full album of disco is a lot.
C’est chic 💅🏽
✨🪩✨
That was so funky I loved it Except for the second song "A warm summer night". I don't really want to hear "Te quiero, papi" whispered in a seductive voice straight into my ears ever again. Highlights: "My forbidden lover", "What about me", "Good times"
yass
Good times zieht das durchschnittliche Chic Album auf 4 Sterne. Grandioser Song.
Allein wegen des Interludes in Good Times rüsch geil
"Good Times" is a fantastic piece of music. The performances really stand out, the production is so CRISP, the composition itself is wonderful; it's really just awesome. Hard to be in anything but a good mood when you hear this track. "My Forbidden Lover" follows suit too, and has an amazing fun bass line that you have to go back and listen to. Really supreme playing. I love how this album moves around different feels, tempi, and stays consistent with itself. It's a really great listen. I've been stingy with my reviews lately.. I can't tell if this is a 3 or a 4. I feel like it's right at a 3.5. Tough one! I'm going for a 4.
I love Chic! While I haven't listened to this album before and didn't know all the songs, there are some great hits on here that it was fun to hear. Nile Rodgers is just a legend and has written so many good songs. He just has the ability to write hits with those hooks that get you every time. We saw him open for Duran Duran years ago, and it was just a total dance party and so much fun. One interesting thing that I noticed when actually sitting and listening to the album is that all the songs had a lot of repetition in them. Again, it's those hooks that he comes up with that are great, but they really get repeated in the songs more than I guess I realized. Great album to kick off a Saturday!
It’s like a nice burger meal. Got different elements many layers. And a terrible singing like the gherkins. Overall very pleasant listen. Nice disco music.
Full of different samples and drum beats that have been featured since this album came out, it was fun to listen to this one and try and figure out where that particular song has been spotted before. My only complaint is that the drawn out instrumental sections carry on longer than necessary. Even on Good Times, the “dancing” section hasn’t aged well and just makes the song a little too long. Overall it’s a jam, some of the songs just need a little pruning.
Chic are such a fun act to see live. I’ve luckily caught them at a few festivals, and the vibes match a festival experience. Nile is a genius. Light and bubbly album with enough going on to make 38 mins seem short. Hardly perfect, but what is? 4/5
Liked this a lot more than the other CHIC album I got. Pretty solid tracklist and a lot less dull through the middle. Definitely still one or two duds, but overall very enjoyable. Favorites: "Good Times", "A Warm Summer Night", "My Feet Keep Dancing" Least Favorite: "Can't Stand to Love You" Low 4.
Sort of felt the same about this one as the last Chic album on the list, it's a good time, really solid disco fun! Sorry I can't think of much more to say!
I so wrote off disco at the time, now I kinda like... more and more of it. Nile Rogers always. There's still time left for my full redemption.
Bernard Edwards (bass) and Nile Rodgers (guitar) are always a winning combo. Rodgers is definitely an inspiration of mine for all things funk guitar, from chord voicings to rhythm and articulation. The bass line on "Good Times" is iconic as well – Edwards plays with a combination of longer fatter eighth-notes and short, crisp 16th-notes that really drive the groove forwards. Everything the band plays fits into the underlying 16th-note pulse "continuum" that keeps people dancing. Of course, there are many other musicians on this album contributing to its greatness. Definitely an enjoyable album overall, though nothing particularly enticed me to listen more closely. I would definitely play this in the background while doing some household chores or something, but it's not an album I could see myself lying on my bed with headphones on and all my focus on listening.
Callie is a fan of disco apparently. She started dancing and swinging her arm side to side. It paired well with making waffle for breakfast.
Its disco time baby...
Seen as one of the key albums of the disco era with one of the greatest grooves of all time in 'Good times' . I think they did well to get away with 7 tracks on the album and track two certainly drags a bit. Definitely a lesson for many in how to record a rhythm section, courtesy of Rodgers, Edwards and Tony Thompson. However within a year, disco 'sucked' and Niles and Bernard were working with Miss Ross. 'My feet keep dancing' and 'my forbidden lover' were also hits of note from this entirely decent album.
Good times.👍🏻
Chic just like the artists.
Oh this is what I’m TALKING ABOUTTT. Mhmmm this is good music. Groovy asf. Every song is good. A bit long but I can imagine people were grooving to this throughout the 80s in the clubs all coked up and full of stamina. So hell yea, it’s charming.
Oooh short and sweet
Another one that took a few listens. Good Times and My Forbidden Lover are instant disco classics, but over time the slower tracks really start to hit the spot. It's well titled - songs are sexual and flirtatious, but without being sleazy. Songs are, by their nature, a bit too long, but otherwise it's a beautifully put together work. 4 stars
Första albumet där man känner igen senare samples.
Good times
Smooth R&B grooves and slick disco rhythms that practically demand platform heels and blue eye shadow. The bassline on Good Times alone earns its legendary status, while the rest keeps things classy and danceable.
Good Times is... well, a good time. It's all pretty fun, but that's the standout for me.
Still don't like disco, but if you listen to this for the musicianship, it's pretty good.
Good times
Music.
Solid album with a killer single. It has to be one of the best disco albums.
groooooovyyyy
They wanted to be at the club and they absolutely did it….. i was truly born in the wrong generation….5 stars for disco daddie Niles Rodgers but 4 because this album is not on my rotation like that
Some really funky stuff, I liked it a lot. Great instrumentation as well. A bit repetitive, to be honest, but to put in the background while you work it's perfect. I didn't favor towards 'Good Times' or 'My Forbidden Lover' but the other tracks got me moving. 4/5
LOVED THIS!!! It's funky, smooth and an overall good time! This is the album I didn't know I needed in my life! Will be picking up the record and listening to more by CHIC!
I’ve been having a bit of a rough time lately, so this was GOOD TIMES. My son was dancing around the house before school screaming, “MY FEET KEEP DANCING”. WHAT ABOUT ME? I just kept wishing it were A WARM SUMMER NIGHT so I could see MY FORBIDDEN LOVER. My wife didn’t like hearing me say that for obvious reasons so I told her “WILL YOU CRY (WHEN YOU HEAR THIS SONG)”. She just rolled her eyes and told me “I CAN’T STAND TO LOVE YOU” as she stormed out of the house.
sleeper hit
Dope! I only heard 1 song from them, the rest was "brand new"!
I always appreciate some disco! Great energy.
One star for cultural importance. One star for the love of disco. Two stars for some mutha-freaking booty-shaking tasty-ass bass playing.
Fun to sit and lose yourself in. 4/5
Easy listening
Chic and Nile Rogers are so important to mice and their sound is so fresh! I love their first album and have to admit this album didn’t hold my attention like that one. However, it contains Good Times which helped establish hip hop so for that it has to be at least a 4.
I would listen to this for the bass alone.
7/10… disco / funk-soul / *1979
Infectious grooves, made for dancing. It gets a bit monotonous after a while though, the songs seem to go on forever
A breath of fresh air after listening to the Mothers of Invention beforehand - actual tunes! Actual playing! Actual fun! This is undeniable regardless of context.
I love chic. I don’t think this was as memorable as their first tho
> the Beatles
Magical. Chic even
kicks an extreme amount of ass
Chic are brilliant. Genuinely one of the best bands I've seen live... However, that was a greatest hits show of not even just chic, but all of Nile rogers' output and his discography is stupendous... This album is wall to wall disco. There is a slight deviation at the start of can't stand to love you, which feels like it grooves a little differently, it was a nice change. It's one of those albums where they've put the best track first. If you start an album with good times you had better have something else in there to top it... But no, you can't top it. It was good, it all sounded smooth, the grooves are solid, the bass lines are incredible, the guitar stand are beautiful, but it is very samey and the album can't hold up to that first track, so I have to mark it down a bit. I think I'm going for a lowish 4.
Not quite what I expected when I saw a disco album coming up in the lineup- I actually loved this! It was so smooth, with nice beats, but had a kind of mellow charm to it. And the vocals were beautiful! This would be a great album to put on for a chill party.
Funky
Fun and energetic disco funk
Dug this more than I expected to! "Good Times" is great, and also enjoyed "My Forbidden Lover" and "What About Me"
These guys must have raided a Fort Knox’s worth of After Eights because this stuff is seriously mint! Good Times is the most legendary song here and is responsible for rap via Rappers Delight as well as more importantly Another One Bites The Dust by Queen. 2nd track A Warm Summer Night is a supremely lush slowie and in terms of greatness the Yang to Good Times’s Yin. Forbidden Lover is the other main surefire highlight but it’s all a ‘good time’ to be honest. Unlike their other album on here C’est Chic there’s not any one outright clanger or moment of subparness. Every song is at least solid. The grooves are such momentous ear candy and so smooth and sleek. The vocals are both scorching, sexy and sass-filled yet also super supple and are able to both whip up a storm and slink into the disco background. Awesome vintagy album art too. Only a 4 because when it comes to true outstanding disco pearls it is a bit top-heavy.
yknow what? i had fun with this. rip disco you were a real one.
pretty damn good - check for samples later
I think I really like disco?
The bass slaps all through the album. The opener, "Good Times," should be on every dance party playlist. Top-notch musicianship all the way through. Disco was unfairly maligned back in the '70s.
Funky!!!!
Don't sleep on this one! Risque is not just a cheap pop disco record. It is very musical. The music is mostly fun, but the underlying theme is a much darker lament of living in the late-70s recession economy and the end of the empty hard partying disco era that many used to cope with a poor economic outlook. If you only have one "disco" record in your collection, you could do worse than to pick up an early pressing of this one. They are still relatively cheap on Discogs and eBay. You may only listen to it once or twice a year, but it will hit every single time. Four stars.
Yes, it's a cool album, but it can't be stated enough the impact the first song had had on music for the past nearly 50 years.
A lot better than I expected. Have listened to few Chic songs, including Good Times. Every song was a banger though Warm Summer Night is def my favorite on the album. Overall very good.
Right on that 4.5 line for me! Excellent album.
More fun than expected
04/01/2026 It was an easy listen. Spotify listeners: 5 million
Okay, loved this.
Love this! I haven’t listened to a lot of disco-flavored music but this is great. Lots of funk here.
One amazing track, the rest neatly below
Really enjoyed the last CHIC album that popped up on here. Once again, this opens on a familiar classic: Good Times. Fun enough disco jam. A Warm Summer Night is a swanky soulful dip before tempos push back up on My Feet Keep Dancing. Love the bass groove on this one -- very dancy. Actually the bass in general across this album is tasty. Can't Stand to Love You is a favorite of mine here. The instrumental on Will You Cry feels familiar. I don't usually go in for ballads, but something about this one connects. This was another solid one from CHIC. Just good clean fun with some great instrumentation. It's a 4 in my book.
Absolute heater of a song right off the hop in Good Times. The guitar sounds like it either heavily influenced or was directly sampled by Daft Punk on RAM. The bass shreds on this album. Did just enough to get a 4 here, maybe a bit carried by Good Times. Honestly kind of fell off toward the end from such a hot start. Maybe an unfair review of the back half, but that's how I'm feeling after one listen.
Fab
Good Times is one of the greatest songs ever.
Funk, hey feels like commercial music but for like really good yogurt, I'm not complaining. Jazz drums always are good, bossanova better be real. This is cool nothing bad, all good, could possibly have this on if I'm feeling jolly
On EVERYTHING I’m loving the disco music on this generator. Bring me more!!
Super bad
The first song is so good that it overshadows the rest of the album. That is a bit sad, they should have put Good Times in the middle and it would have been a perfect record.
7.5/10
Lovely bass. A fantastic opener. Real nice all the way through. Proper disco. Some great listening quite different to what I normally would put on. It just feels familiar, like I've heard it all before. Perhaps that signifies it's a bit samey, but it's consistently enjoyable. Definitely want to consider exploring this genre further.
Clean and tight and funky. Such a cool energy. Execution feels spot on - exactly what they wanted to create. Really fun listening
Bops!
I feel I grew up in a period (late 80s / early 90s) where disco wasn't really a thing. Nobody was bothered enough to declare that it sucked, whilst you didn't really hear it anywhere either. But, at student club nights, they would always be a few classic from the 70s thrown in. A wedding party wasn't a wedding party without some classic and here we are today with Nile being the boss of everything in the world. And rightly so to be honest. Whilst there's not quite enough here for me to go for the full 5 because I don't think I could listen on repeat on a desert island, there's still a LOT here to love.
Good Times and My Feet Keep Dancing were standout tracks for me, but the entire thing was such fun easy listening, without overstaying it's welcome. I was shocked how quickly it was over, and the fact I considered pressing play again to listen from the start straight away, means this is getting a strong 4 Stars.
Good Times // A Warm Summer Night // My Feet Keep Dancing // My Forbidden Lover // Will You Cry //
This is great. Classic disco impeccably recorded. I actually listened to this kind of recently to test out some new headphones.
I like it! Don’t normally listen to disco
Funky, delicious Sunday morning for me here. Bass line will be going around my head for the rest of it.
Didn’t have time for much, but what I heard was really good.
I minst ljuva A eran summer night och stenhårda dissen Can’t stand to love you.
7/10 Favourite: Good Times Least Favourite: Can't Stand to Love You
track 1: holding hands at the roller rink track 2: awkward fumbling attempt at touching a boob track 3: back to skating, no holding hands this time track 4: "okay, wait until we're in the parking lot and then you can touch a boob" track 5: faux pas committed, offer rescinded track 6: *awkward teenage boy sobs* track 7: school isn't going to be fun tomorrow
No. 321/1001 Good Times 5/5 A Warm Summer Night 5/5 My Feet Keep Dancing 4/5 My Forbidden Lover 4/5 Can't Stand to Love You 3/5 Will You Cry 4/5 What About Me 4/5 Average: 4,14 Great album. Loved how they brought disco, funk and soul together. Especially the instrumentals were super well done.
Listening to this conjures up memories I don't actually have, a testament to disco's time-capsule nature, at least when it's a classic like this is. I can't pretend to hold any specific prejudice against disco since I didn't live thru that era - I can't calculate how vexed I would've been to hear that genre flood the airwaves. All I can say is that this particular record, besides being monstrously influential, has a special warmth that I can certainly get down w/: 'Don't be a drag, participate / Clams on the half shell and roller skates, roller skates.' Repetitive, sure, but the rhythms are often irresistible, and the percussion often inventive, especially on 'My Feet Keep Dancing.' I'm moved to throw this on at a party to see what happens. Folks'll dig, right?
Just like watching BBC coverage of any random festival
Soooo fun. Will listen again. But not over and over.
The prophets CHIC told us of the good times, and thus they were, cares abandoned, disciples staying up all night, all was good, and all were happy. But something happened, and people got arrogant, they didn't protect the good times. By all accounts the intoduction of the drum machine was the beginning of the end. The good times slowly vanished. But a prophecy tells of another, a second coming, one who will rise up and bring the good times back. Bring back back the groove and the platform shoes. But until that day, we sit, and wait, and reminisce, of the good times.
Enjoyable Sunday album. Preferred the less well-known songs because they haven't been tainted by SCS adverts.
As Nile Rodger’s bangers flow through my kitchen on a Sunday morning I think to myself, Ian you’re a dancer. Let’s go.
Pioneers of making people move. Crisp and fun. Plenty of dancing round the house to this one
The grooves are absolutely fire on this album - funky bass lines backed with Chic's disco soul sound are always a winner in my eyes. Good Times is a superb start to the album, and My Feet Keep Dancing continues the feel good vibe. There are a couple of tracks that you could argue perform the role of fillers, but I still came away from this album feeling uplifted and in a great mood. What more can you ask for?
groovy as fook, was dancing my ass off to this
Great record
Just about every second of this is pure liquid disco gold. I don’t need anything to reinforce Nile Rodgers’ status as a musical genius, but if anyone did... Risqué is your answer. I don’t particularly subscribe to the venues and atmospheres that this music (particularly Good Times) was and often still is played in, being that of cheap lights, low ceilings, sticky floors and cigarette smoke, but I do subscribe to the music itself. Disco is often written off, what with the repetitive bright refrains and earworm choruses, but in quite a lot of it (mainly the popular stuff, even), there’s more than there seems at work. For example, did you ever think that Good Times was over eight minutes long? I had no idea. It feels like three. And I don’t even think that’s the best song here. Biggest and most accessible, sure, that’s why it’s the first track on the A side, but it’s not like Chic were cashing in on it. The rest is every bit as good, in particular A Warm Summer Night and, surprisingly for me given its theatrical nature, Will You Cry. I can’t praise this enough. With the confines of what limits it to its label as “disco music”, it couldn’t do anything better.
Nile Rodgers is one of the all time greats. 3.5/5
A good, solid disco album. Pretty sure this is the first straight disco album on the list, and it was well-chosen. "Good Times" is the notable hit, but the rest of the album is quite solid as well. Nice addition to the list.
Lots of fun, makes me want to be in a disco club. Fun and funky
This sounds like the pure spirit of the 70s disco fever. It's fun and funky, with high pitched harmonies and funky guitar playing. It is a perfect time capsule to the era.
Funky and groovy. Nile Rodgers is recognizable from miles away, that tone is just so synonymous with him. Amazing sounding record and good vibes all around.
Easy on the ears
Groovy
Historic disco record still haunting weddings to this day.
Good Times is a banger. I didn't know the rest but I will definitely listen again. Then again, I e always been a closet disco fan.
This is good music but it's also one of those albums where I knew exactly where it was going by the second track. It's disco. It's very well played and produced. It has an important place in US cultural history. But I wouldn't choose to listen to it.
Disco does anything but suck.
Lean into the groove and let it fly you to Saturn. A masterclass of songwriting. What Joe Camel listens to when he fancies a night out.
Hip hop the hippy the hippy. Heavy vibes. Again a spot where I wish this was on a 10 scale bc this is a 7.
If only it was a bit more risky. Good Times is, of course, iconic, and I love My Forbidden Lover. So much that I'm doubting the 4 I just clicked on before writing this, but I think there is something lacking here when compared with other albums in CHIC's catalogue. It gets a bit dry and relies too much on "people want to dance".
Disco classic
Good Times is a legendary song but tbh this is the time I learned it was 8 minutes long. It really didn't need to be! I mainly like the album for Nike Rogers' guitar playing and some awesome bass lines. He and Edwards are really masters of their instruments Not sure I can go above 4* as it wears a bit thin with the long songs
Actually so much better than what I expected from a disco album - massive range of styles. However with disco, you listen to the opening minute of a song and know what the rest is gonna sound like
A little did you know before I get into the review. CHIC's biggest hit La Freak, was originally written with the words, "Ah Fu$k off" as the catch line. Studio 54 denied them entrance and they responded with La Freak, with the F off lines. Management had them change so it would get on the radio. Very familiar with CHIC and most of the songs off this album. I'm sure most people over the age of 30, maybe 40 have danced to Good Times at wedding. And that song has been sampled so many times, hard to keep track. Good Times, My Feet Keep Dancing and My Forbidden Lover are all great tracks, but the rest of the album is nearly as good. This is the kind of music that keeps you grooving in seat. Old school funk and sexy sounds, just music you can't help but groove and dance to as your loving your girl or whoever you love up. Very good album and makes me think back to my old high school days. I can listen to this old school stuff all day long. 4
disco boogie party fun times!
i love city pop and this has hints of that sprinkled in. but it's pretty damn good separated from that too
Equal to C'est Chic. Good Times has one of the most iconic bass lines of all time. The downside is the overly long songs with little changes throughout the song. It can get a little bit repetitive.
I followed Chic back in the day. I was surprised by the range in the album.
I feel like disco kind of gets unfair hate. I mean, ok, it's not something that I'd really ever listen to on purpose. But the musicianship is usually pretty great, bass and guitar in particular. For this album - I could listen to these bass lines all day. Seems like it would be a lot of fun to play. The Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards combo is always a pleasure. I mean the songs are sappy and dumb but the music is good. I like it. Chic, and disco in general, are one of those instances where, when they come up, it's always really fun to listen to and then forget about it for a while until it comes up again. 3.75/5
