Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Love me some disco! I knew the first track of course. I much preferred the more dance-y tracks but I enjoyed it all regardless.
Might be the pinnacle of this genre and the bridge to funk.
So chic
top of disco
Chic's "Risqué" is well produced and put together. At its heart, the powerhouse trio of Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and Tony Thompson deliver performances of remarkable prowess. The album’s visual presentation matches its musical flair, with stylish photography adorning the cover and hinting at the elegance within. “Good Times” stands tall as a crowning achievement—not only is it celebrated and endlessly sampled, it captures the spirit of an era and continues to influence popular music even to this day. The up-tempo tracks pulse with an energy, and infectious grooves that they invite even the most reluctant listener to move. If there is a criticism to be found, it lies in the album’s lyrics, which can veer towards repetition—yet, within the context of disco, where rhythm and melody reign supreme, this feels almost intentional rather than a misstep. All told, "Risqué" is a thoroughly enjoyable listen: a testament to Chic’s artistry and to the enduring appeal of disco itself. 4⭐ Would I listen to this album again? Yes Would I buy this album? Possibly! Its out of print though! 1 "Good Times" - This is a wonderful song. Iconic and much sampled. Beautifully arranged. Superbly played. What a bass line. Excellent vocals. I defy anyone not to tap their toe at the very least. - 5 2 "A Warm Summer Night" - A slower tempo, more introspective. Lush. Almost spoken word vocals. - 4 3 "My Feet Keep Dancing" - Back to an up tempo beat. Brilliant bass line. - 4 4 "My Forbidden Lover" - Another hit from the time of release. Great song. What a groove. - 5 5 "Can't Stand to Love You" - The song kicks off with a great guitar lick. This is a little funky. That's a good thing! - 5 6 "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)" - 4 7 "What About Me?" - 4 Total - 31 Average - 4.43
A bit slow, but very enjoyable. They should explored some more song ideas instead of trying to expand the few they had to such lengths. It really does almost work, though. I like that it has a ton of range, yet one cohesive vibe throughout. Quality shit. 4/5
Groovy
sounds like daft punk
Like the other CHIC album, pretty repetitive. Not as good though. Low 4.
Fun
Another solid album from chic. Listening to it I can definitely understand why disco might die, but since I’m not sick of the genre yet I thought it was pretty fun
I'm really fascinated by the vocal use on these tracks. Rather having lyrics that are focused on telling a story, the vocal lines are often repeated and seem to be serving the mood of the overall song. And it really works. It's like a disco symphony. Even though "Good Times" is super familiar, both on its own and through being sampled all over the place, it fits in well with the overall album. The serotonin boost from the get-go of the album is magnificent!
This shit is glossy. It’s smoother than it has any right to be. It grooves in a background kind of way. Like elevator music for a very fancy elevator with velvet walls. It kind of scratches that same itch as Jamiroquai, just without the hats or energy. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Good Times - A Warm Summer Night - My Forbidden Lover
Super funky and tasty music. Could listen to this at any time. Nile Rodgers is unbelievably good at everything he does.
Sound of sophisticated disco, that groove is super tight
Chic is always a good time (ha) but i didn't like this one as much as C'est chic
The singles are absolutely great, the non-singles are just there. But that's still 8 minutes of "Good Times", which is 8 more than I normally think to have, so it's got that going for it!
Bajo brutal en "Good Times"
Disco! A bit short
these guys are always great. just so tight in every aspect
Rating in line with C'est Chic since it sounded much the same to me. Good Times and My Feet Keep Dancing were standouts. And props to being foundational for rap given Rappers Delight sampled Good Times. 3.75/5
A very solid mix of classic disco and soul/r&b songs. 7/10
wow shockingly good to listen to in terms of dance music
great vocals and smooth production, really groovy and vibey record, I really enjoyed it.
It gest tiring, I feel to listend to the whole record. But what an iconic sound defining the disco funk of the early 80's. So many time covered and sampled. "CHIC, c'est chic".
Risque is the third studio album from the Chic, the New York City band started by guitarist Nile Rogers and bassist Bernard Edwards. While their second album, C'est Chic, was more commercially successful. Risque was more influential. It is regarded as the band's best work, and one of the defining albums of the disco era. Risque leads off with "Good Times," one of the most recognizable - and most sampled - disco songs. Chic made songs with a funk basis; the bass lines are upbeat and driving. Their vocals have a choral sound, bringing and R&B and soul elements into their songs.
aw freak out
Good times, good times. Honestly thought the Sugarhill Gang came up with that beat, didn't know it was sampled from CHIC. It will go on the 1001 playlist. Other songs like "My feet keep dancin'" are fun little ditties as well. Not the kind of music I usually listen to, but found it quite enjoyable. Boosting it up to 4 stars for being a nice surprise.
If this doesn't get you moving you may not have a soul. You can say it's repetitive, but that's just because we want to dance for more than 3 minutes. Great album and good times is legendary
Now you know why Nile Rogers is the goat
I was so overjoyed in hearing rapper’s delight at the beginning of this album (that I’d never heard of), that at after work drinks, I exclaimed, “guess what album was on my album generator this morning?!” I then promptly started singing the bass line. When nobody knew what I was doing, I then started singing the vocal part as well as I could, which was abysmal. The crowd of work colleagues looked at me like “shut up, drunk man!” and now that overjoyed delight I felt in the morning has been turned to shame, a shame that will return to me in the quiet moments before I fall asleep for the rest of my life. I’m sure this album has inspired many such similar situations in others.
Disco Bop, perfect for getting ready or bopping around and arranging flowers. Songs are longer than I remembered, but really good music to move and groove to. Each song is so familiar, probably because of sampling, even if I didn't know I knew it! Fave songs: can't stand to love you ~ but all of em are good to slink around to.
I love chic
Buen funk-disco clásico. Entretenido.
Infectious rhythms...essential dance nusic
Dis-go hard
7.1/10
Great instrumentation without much variation and long songs. Seems appropriate for the genre but it left me wishing for a radio edit. Still its hard to deny how good the grooves are.
Nice.
Props to Nile Rogers and the Chic team for mastering the moody groove. It's amazing how a song like 'A Warm Summer Night' can go on so long without much development yet it never gets boring! I'd like to revisit this record.
Short and sweet record by the legendary band of Chic. Great songs to listen to, musicianship at the top for a memorable record. Recommended through and through
This is disco at its finest. The opener alone is an iconic classic. The rest of the album, although not on par with the first track, still delivers high-quality disco music. Forget the lyrics, most of it is just to carry the melody.
Very fun. Sounds like something bob reid would play in p.e. class!
This was fun and felt like a really great start to the summer.
Très chic! Every song pops. Disco is one of my favorite genres, and this album is stellar from top to bottom. I already feel the pull to return. We need another 3 Bar Saturday that includes a disco club.
This album is grooooooovyyyyy. Listened to it multiple times and loved dancing around the house to it. 🪩🕺
Fun fact: Chic has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 11 times, they are the most nominated act in history to not get inducted. Loved this, let’s bring disco back!
When it comes down to it, CHIC has to be one of the most influential American bands right? Last one ruled, this one ruled, I love to listen to Nile Rodgers.
Awesome record. Didn’t realize their disco chops extended beyond “Good Times”. Short, sweet, and beautiful. Standout track is: “Will You Cry (When You Hear this Song)”
Good times is the obvious stand out but this is a very fun album!
Good Times indeed. Masterful bass and guitar throughout.
There's Bernard Edwards and there's everyone else. Nile Rodgers and Tony Thompson are no slouches either. Top shelf funk - transcends the disco label. Good Times!
So disco really isn’t a genre I seek out, but I’m always down to listen to an album here and there when they come up on a list or through an album generator. That said, I’m always excited to hear something involving Nile Rodgers. He was on his own level, because his music is just so groovy, elegant, and classy. Yeah, he’s got tracks like “Good Times” that I’m honestly kind of burned out on, but once you get past the big hits and dig a little deeper, you’ll always find some goo quality music. Some of his more laid back tracks are actually my favorites. Also, when I listen to albums he’s involved with, I’m constantly picking up on elements I already know, because they’ve been sampled so much by dance and hip hop producers. His music definitely outlived the genre and carried over into the sounds of future generations.
Time marches on, just can't wait The clock keeps turning, why hesitate? You silly fool; you can't change your fate
This is exactly why I like The Generator. It's forcing genres down my throat like goose loading for a foie gras harvest. Disco is back on the menu, boys. First impressions, not oppressively disco-y. Sounds lovely. My goose throat relaxes. It's nearly willing. Shit is pretty catchy. Production sounds stellar. Its clear how influential this was. Shit am I about to give a disco album a 4? 4
Fun groovy jazz
🎧Disco is cool. Deal with it.
1979. Peak Disco music. "Good Times" being an 8min starter song can't be beat. This dropped as Disco became mainstream.
This album honestly slaps as the kids say. Its production sounds fantastic, it’s funky as hell, and some of the extended instrumental sections in the songs are great. It’s not a straight up disco-bash like I expected. I had never listened to this front to back before this but I’m glad I did. Excellent album.
You couldn’t program the songs to be any tighter than what they already are. CHIC is a well-oiled machine. Risque runs the risk of starting off to strong with “Good Times” followed by the beautiful but less exciting “A Warm Summer Night”, but they still never fails to hold onto my attention. Another great Nile Rodgers record for the books.
bangers
insane bass guitar
#98 - Total classic and stood the test of time
Pleasantly groovy. Some songs go on too long. 3.5
Substantive dance music tinged with melancholy, the agues of the day – who says disco couldn't be just a little bit sad? "Good Times" as "Happy Days Are Here Again" is quality insight from the editors (though calling this dark overstates the case) – and one can dig a song that combines and references to "the sporting life" with lyrics like "rollerskates, rollerskates," not to mention the leisurely wide open spaces mellowly explored for the last several minutes, which makes this seeming trifle actually quite epic. "My Feet Keep Dancing" is also tinged with a weighty sort of self-consciousness, as if one's out ot control and knows not what else to do – the almost mechanistic repetition of the vocals and the sharp strings emphasize the potential seriousess of the situation, with the chiming bells adding a note of contemplation and perhaps gravitas. "Forbidden Lover" swings a bit more loosely. "Will You Cry" is lushly sad, wallowing in post-break-up bad vibes. "What About Me" – with the repeated riff from the opener totally justified for its quality – was/is an anthem most apropos to the me decade. Quality playing abounds, well accessorized with grace notes galore –the squeaky/edgy guitar, the steadily-bouncing and vamping, and then romping-roaming bass lines the quartering little piano figures, the pointillistic/staccato strings, the bells here and there offering a churchy solemnity as if disco is about solace from pain as much as having a good time. Disco's gifts have long outlived its demolition and death. This record delivers an epic when many were perhaps expecting a trifle.
solid disco grooves! Some of my all time disco favorites. bassline of 'good times' is amazing.
It’s CHIC sounding like CHIC. It’s funky when it should be, but some of the songs drag a little too long. Super influential.
undeniable
Nice music
3.5 - Good
Everything is really good besides the 2nd song.
It's hard to start an album with a much better song than Good Times, so the question is where it goes from there. Thankfully there is a lot more to enjoy, especially My Forbidden Lover. Things don't feel quite as rewarding when the tempo lowers, but overall still a great album.
Entire album is great, Nike Rodger’s absolutely kills it on guitar and Bernard Edward’s the same for bass, I can see how some people say it gets a bit repetitive especially with good times being 8 minutes but the guitar and bass was all that was needed to keep me hooked for the entire run time, vocals were classic disco style, all that was needed but the funk brought by the instruments is what makes this album for me. Overall 8/10.
The first few songs on this album are catchy and fun, but this does tend to wear out its welcome by the end of the album. I think the album is still carried pretty heavily by the first two tracks, though.
Classic CHIC goodness. Awesome songs with awesome vibes. Something you can sing along to and can't help but dance to it.
Welp, I had a review for this. I accidentally exited out of the tab though. Guess I have to write a whole new review for Chic's Risqué album. I'll be brief. This is a disco album, which I haven't gotten a ton of. I really like it though. This album's pretty good. The basslines are the stuff dreams are made of. Obviously, "Good Times" is an absolute classic of a song, but Bernard Edwards manages to be a source of consistently great bass playing throughout the entire album. And of course, I have to praise Nile Rodgers for his work too. How could I not? The other members of Chic deserve their recognition too though. So to people like drummer Tony Thompson and vocalists Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin, good job! The album's a little repetitive, but when the songs are as fun as they are, who even cares? I don't. I'm just over here enjoying the music! The writing isn't perfect, but it does the job. The album does peak at the beginning with the aforementioned "Good Times," but the other songs are still good. This album's cool. 4/5.
Cool
Again the disco vibes. I really like it. Makes me wish there were still some pubs around playing tunes like these.
Not as good as C'est Chic, but still definitely worth listening. Vocal work from the ladies is pretty good as always, electric guitar has some great mini solos and melodies, but the king of this album, to the surprise of no one, is the bass. Amazing bass lines, inspiring generations of new bass players to come. It's so hard not to bop your head to the rhythm. Album is quite good overall, but in my opinion has only one, opening song worthy being a hit. The rest is just pleasant to listen to, nothing more than that. But it's confirmed - Chic is a great band.
Really enjoyed this one only knew the hits and of course Nils Rogers work with David Bowie, but enjoyed the listen
It's cliche calling disco smooth but like how else can you describe music this nice and easy-going? It's genuinely just a great time to hear all these well crafted but mid tempo grooves do their thing especially the bass, I didn't realize Good Times was a bassline I learned when I tried learning some basslines a while ago, which really just hits how this stuff could inspire anybody (especially when thinking about how part of this bassline could have inspired Queen with the Another One Bites the Dust). Fun album and more reasons for me to check out more disco
Wedding tunes
Put off listening to this one on account of it being disco, which is ridiculous, because I kinda like disco? And if this is the disco I'm being served, then I really like it. Good Times is a masterpiece. The rest keeps up the energy. I have nothing bad to say about this. Didn't realize this was Nile Rodgers!
The bass playing is *by far* the best thing about this album. It's so goddamn good. I could listen to "Good Times" for about a half hour straight, as well. None of the other songs really truly live up to that one, though. It's very much a downhill kind of album. By the end, even though it's a shorter album, I was ready to move on to something else. That bass playing is special though. I could listen to that isolated and be happy. Favorite Song(s): Good Times
****A very enjoyable album
Nice!
Song: Good times i like this song because i think I have heard this song before and this just sounds good and i just like that it is saying good times Song: A warm summer night i like this song because it just reminds me of summer Song: cant stand to love you this song is good but i like the others songs better and it just reminds me of spring and fall which i dont really like fall so i like it a little bit
Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of trumpet? Well in Good Times you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in A Warm Summer Night you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to a song that has a lot of drums? Well in Can't Stand To Love You you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.
Are the people on the cover the singers? I thought "Good Times" was great. I like the music and I like the singing voice. I liked "A Warm Summer Night" because it was pretty. The music was delicate but not boring. I liked "Can't Stand to Love You" because it was fun. The music was fun and the singing was pleasant. I would definitely recommend this album.
Fun and funky
album of hits
It's a real shame how Disco was pretty brutally massacred in the US by the time the late 70s hit, considering it pretty much single handedly went on to inspire and be the basis of dozens of other genres in the next 30 years. CHIC proves here just how influential the groove would go on to be. Any aspiring bass players should make this album mandatory listening. Bernard Edwards takes us to school. This is how you keep bass playing interesting while not overstepping the other musicians.
The sound of five musicians willing to Risqué it all for the groove.
Good times indeed
A warm summer night en My forbidden lover staan daar aardig boven.
recently i've been thinking about expensive music -- stuff that sounds expensive, like it was high grade, buffalo mozzarella and gold leaf in the metro area. Invincible cost 30 million of Epic's own money to make, but i couldn't tell you if any of those songs sounded like they cost a couple million to make. Risque has the opposite problem -- i don't know how much "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)" cost to make, but i can definitely tell it was a lot more than i make in a year. there's something so lush about it, like there's a party going on but you should really put down a coaster cause that's mahogany it's sitting on. forgive me, but it kinda feels a bit Weimar to me. decadence, the cabaret and celebration during the rise of reactionary conservativism in the US and UK (and yes, the death of disco). it's all so bittersweet -- you could fault it for being romantic or frivolous, but at least some point good times were had. it's literally the name of the first track, after all.
I had a good time listening to this funky track. A couple songs drug on a bit too long, but this is fun '70s Disco music. Favorite Track: "Good Times"
I'm living the '70s era now, and the album found me at the perfect time!
I can't say I ever heard any CHIC apart from "C'est Chic", which included what is probably their most well-known track, as well as some other tracks I immediately recognized. As a whole, though, I may have enjoyed this album more than their previous one. The songs don't seem to drag on as much, and offer a more pleasant total picture. I'm not sure if it works as well in a proper disco, but when I'm sitting down and picking an album to listen to, Risqué would win out for sure.
Good R&B/Disco. Enjoyed it.
I like this album far more than I thought I would. I’m not too into disco and dance but the music and the vibe are great. Much closer to funk than what I was expecting.
Tricky one this. On the one hand it's one of the great bands of disco, on the other hand it's a bit tedious and the lyrics are banal. There's so much to admire about Chic but there's a sense that an album of it is listening in the wrong way. It's for on the floor.
very funky and groovy. “good times” indeed. Favorite track: good times other picks: my feet keep dancing, what about me, my forbidden lover
Nice one.
Enjoyed this, good vibes all round. Nile Rodgers' guitar playing is great, no surprise there. The band added those extra little flourishes that round off their sound, like the piano and string parts, I really like that. It almost has a city pop style at moments I did think one or two tracks could get a bit repetitive, I'd occasionally check my phone thinking it was somehow repeating again but it wasn't a major issue Pretty good overall. Glad I heard it Highlights: Good Times, My Forbidden Lover
If you had asked me a year ago whether I like disco I would have said no, but I'm all about this album. The first track (Good Times) is a clear standout, but the rest of the album slaps. Quite a few times I thought I'd heard bits before - not sure if that's from copying, sampling or influencing, or if I've just heard it without knowing who they were
Peaks early, as basically every Chic record does, with the eternal "Good Times," but then it settles into a simmering groove that is perfect to put on while you're cooking a fancy meal for someone you wanna sleep with
A good record that is a victim of being listened to outside of the context for which it’s intended. Sure, if you are listening to it hoping for it to be imbued with some deeper meaning, it won’t be for you. Sometimes music is just intended to be danced to. Even so, it’s far from one speed, the slower songs are still groovy and showcase some great musicianship and song craft. I think generally discos thrives as more of a singles format, but this is one of the better albums of the genre
i wish it was more consistently dancy, but this was a pretty fun time.
Rating: 8.5/10 So damn funky.
Vibrant, sharp, stylish, full of hooks - a great listen. It is sad that the contributions of Tony Thompson and Bernard Edwards are less remembered, a fabulous rhythm section.
good disco
Without this album there'd be no Giorgio Moroder, no Daft Punk, and no countless other musical acts than make us get up and dance. Well done.
Classic grooves. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards absolutely kill.
One of disco’s most iconic albums that also helped pioneer hip-hop and new wave. This is classic Nile Rodgers dance floor funk with the right bass line at the right time Good Times is the obvious stand out, a truly perfect opener, and the rest of the album is pretty good but nothing else really comes close to that unstoppable groove
Very groovy , love that bass 3.75
Great, not listened before, liked it very much.
Gostei muito de Good Times (óbvio), My Feet Keep Dancing, A Warm Summer Night e Can't Stand to Love You.
I was excited for this, and it was good, bit repetitive though.
pretty good.
Nice grooves and very listenable.
Another fun album by CHIC! This music is so bright and delightful that its creation seems to be effortless, though I know better. But Risqué sure is easy to listen to. Delightful and smooth are probably the adjectives I'd use the most, I think. I think it's fair to say Risqué, despite its name, wasn't as daring as C'est Chic, but hey, both were enjoyable just the same. Thankfully Risqué wasn't a cookie cutter copy and leaned more towards R&B. Still, there was enough disco that I was dancing!
Another excellent funky disco album, courtesy of Chic! This album was the direct follow-up to the iconic "C'est Chic", and while this is not quite as good in my opinion, it's still a solid album! If I had to highlight something that this album brings to the table that is different from the previously mentioned Chic album, it's that this album leans even heavier into the R&B sound, which would become even bigger at the turn of the decade to the 1980s. I really wanted to love this as much as I loved "C'est Chic", but it didn't quite hit that same high for me. That said, it was still a high 3, at the very least, and so I'm rounding it up anyway!
Love the ringing guitar riffs of Nile Rodgers and some of the basslines are just too funky. Some of the tracks wandered off from the party vibe and weren't as infectious so this is a 4/5 from me
Didn't know what to expect but I loved it. So funky and I love disco. I never realised Good Times was 8 minutes long. Highlights: Good Times My Forbidden Lover
Nile Rodgers really knew how to make songs to get people dancing. 45 years later and you can still fill the floor with Good Times. 4/5
Excellent album, Nile Rodgers is metronomic on Guitar, the bass is some of the best I've heard
Solid album.
Classic disco
I dig the mid-tempo grooves on this album though nothing quite compares to Good Times.
Uplifting
Good times carries this album hard, all the way up to 4 stars, but not quite enough for a full 5.
Beyond the hits, these are real songs that just happen to use that smooth CHIC sound.
Those bass lines kept me engaged. Not a ton of diversity of sound in this album, but its a short little ripper. I would totally be in a CHIC cover band.
Classic good beats
Nile Rodgers 🙌
4 - better than this genre usually is
High quality disco. There is some filler that is a bit lightweight, but the big hitters are absolutely fabulous.
This was more fun than I knew I needed. I never realized that first track is literally almost 8 minutes long.
An enjoyable romp around the dance floor. Is What About Me about what I think it is about? 3.5 but rounding up because it put me in a good mood.
I have some amount less than 583992 hours spent awake left in my life and having spent 36 minutes listening to this has been a great use of my time It's insane how much my mood improved when the first song came on. It might be impossible to not be in the mood hearing that. This happiness buff lasted throughout the entire album and I was half-dancing in the rain and singing along with the bassline just jamming along to the rhythm
Great album! I especially liked the faster songs like the classic Good Times, great beats.
I liked this! Ended up listening to it twice by accident
Iconic Album
Good album,
Disco fanstastico
Tailor made for solid gold dancers.
This was pretty rad. They have some depth beyond their hit single that I didn’t know about.
Really short album, but Good Times is a masterpiece track.
a proper classic, good vibes, good grooves
Chic is great, though sometimes they get a bit repetitive.
Good Times and My Feet Keep Dancing were the best tracks. Nice album!
Classic!
I love a good bit of disco and of course there are some iconic tunes on here. They do kind of overshadow the rest though and I don’t think I would ever listen to this as an album
Risqué isn’t your standard happy goofy coked up disco album, it gets dark and heavy. Nile Rodgers brings genius to his songwriting, this album is no exception. It’s real and gritty, even sophisticated.
4/5
Man I love Chic. They laid out the blueprint for house music 20 years before it became popular. Simply make an irresistible musical idea, loop it, and iterate on it throughout the course of 5+ minutes. Shout out to Nile Rodgers who has to be one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. Chics greatest hits go head to head with any greatest hits album.
Großartig. Komplexer als auf den ersten Blick gedacht. Go Nile, go for it (:o)
Yeah this thing is awesome. Great grooves. Consistent all the way through. I don't think it's doing anything particularly inventive but the band is honed in and giving it their all.
Good
nice listening for this morning 4/5
June 11, 2024 HL: "Good Times", "My Feet Keep Dancing", "My Forbidden Lover", "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)" I'm not sure if Chic needed 2 albums on this list, but what a funky, pretty listen. The slower songs like "Will You Cry" have a certain grandeur about them, and what's to say about "Good Times" that hasn't already been said. BERNARD EDWARDS WAS THE GOAT. also, officially at the 800th album! What I accomplished in the last 100 days: -became un-unemployed -turned another year older -survived the (admittedly mild) winter
Even not enjoying it so hard and noting that it's a bit outdated, it's fairly easy to see that this is "serious business". This is important material for musical history, and it's very fair that it should be included on the 1001 list.
A fun album!
Really cool. Good vibe for doing chores.
Much better than the other CHIC album. The repetition was bugging me at first, until I realized that this is meant to be dance music. I mean, disco is still a synonym for dance club. With that in mind I totally get the groove and it’s a good one.
Good times!
Nice album
I like all the parts of the songs, they just get a bit too repetitive sometimes.
insert "Cat Head Bobbing" gif
A golden age disco album. Absolutely everything that came out at that time is either very good or has become a classic. I didn't know CHIC. But when I looked at the album cover I already knew it was going to be BANG!
DISCO. If you aren't moving something as soon as Good Times starts, there's no hope for you. Later sampled by Sugarhill Gang, and probably others. The bass lines lay down a fierce groove throughout. I didn't like the slower songs as much until Will You Cry, great ballad with powerful backing strings. **** for Good Times, most of the rest is still worth a spin.
"Good Times" is a classic track off this album, the bass line has been sampled in multiple songs, and Nile Rodgers guitar is iconic. The rest of this album is classic 70s dance music, driving basslines, 4 on the floor drum beat, along with Rodgers guitars styles, and impeccable vocals. Great music.
Strong
How you supposed to find your groove in 36 minutes? With that bass line the opening track should be 36 minutes. This record is over before you even guess someone's sign. Good Times.
I didn't know that I knew this band. They have so many instantly recognizable jams. I love me some disco. My Feet Keep Dancing felt like an ELO song at times. The disco sound gets a little same-y by the end. The album is surely made to be enjoyed on a dancefloor, not song by song in my office chair. I enjoyed it, but did get a little bored by the end. If I had a few drinks in me and was on the dancefloor, I don't think I'd get bored. 7/10. 7/10.
This was a little Risqué, but My Feet Keep Dancing, so who cares. Will You Cry when I stop?
Not a huge disco fan but there is no denying they are one of the primo disco groups of that era. Most of the songs were as expected until Can't Stand to Love You which was closer to funk than disco- not bad, just different. Good Times is an all-time, stone cold classic disco song. Great listen.
Incredible bass playing, so fun to listen to. An album that demands you shake your ass.
At first I rolled my eyes because I didn’t really think that there was a point to another chic album on this list since le freak was on the other one, but I was totally wrong. Not only did I forget about good times (although I’m not a huge fan of that song) but the rest of the album was far better than the rest of the le freak album. I felt like it had more variety in the disco plus a warm summer night was a banger.
Good Times is excellent
I was born in the wrong era. And by that I mean I’m a queer Millennial who wishes she could’ve gone to the club when disco was hot, but also, like, yes, I know, Strawman Queer Elder™️, I know…but how cool would it have been to hear this album when it was released?! God, it’s so good, and so layered that I find new details after every spin – and to think it’s not even my favorite Chic album?!? Disco deserved so much better.
As I understand it, this album was very influential during the disco era, and it is a great record indeed. Very easy to listen through, incredible instrumentation, though I think it lacks a bit of substance. Some of the songs are longer than they need to be. The whole album is just 7 tracks. Good Times is an incredible opener... but are its 8 minutes of total runtime justified? I mean, yes, It's very fun to listen to, very groovy and flows great, but there just isn't a whole lot of development musically throughout the song. Same thing happens with A Warm Summer Night and My Feet Keep Dancing. They're great songs, but their length isn't fully justified. Going on to Side B, I feel like it's a lot better balanced. My Forbidden Lover continues the well-established groove and funkiness, it's shorter than the songs before it and it doesn't drag as much. The next song, Can't Stand to Love you is alright, bridges the gap between My Forbidden Lover and Will You Cry, speaking of which, slows down the pace and serves as a fantastic resting point in the album, doesn't drag at all, has great vocals, great instrumentation and a very nice buildup going into the second half. The album's closer, What About Me combines the groove of Side A and the slower pace of Will You Cry. It's a good closer, it isn't as interesting as some of the album's other songs but stands well enough on it's own. Very fine album. Fun to listen through, and even if some of its songs are a bit too long, the album itself doesn't drag as much and generally sounds incredible. Flows from one song to the other nicely. It's an 8/10 for me.
7/10. Groovy and fun. Put ‘Can’t stand to love you’ on the 5 ⭐️ song list. Lyrically it got a little stale for me and every song did start to sound the same as the album went on but enjoyed it overall.
I really enjoyed their last album so I have no doubts that this one will be good also. Again even from just the first 2 songs I am loving the vibes, they are really easy to listen to and musically the songs are super funky and interesting. I am loving the vocal performances and arrangements the harmonies feel like a breath of fresh air. This album is just overall very fun to listen to and I'll probably listen again and often.
My feet can't stop dancing
A lot better than I expected. Honestly felt like I was listening to Daft Punk for a lot of it.
Nile Rodgers is a master of funk, and this album is just another well-crafted example of it.
A bit repetitive but is a good vibe. Anyway, this is the songs that you put on while driving at night :)
great fun! just kind of repetitive
Blind album and artist. I completely forgot the opening track existed, but I'm glad this project opens my ears to new music and experiences. Solid 4, I'm biased towards those funky bass lines.
Oh yeah this is disco at it's best IMHO. Good Times is just that a good time with A Warm Summer Night and My Forbidden Lover standouts on a very boppy along album.
Teenage me would be aghast at the thought of scoring a disco album 4, heh. This has a lot of the same qualities as dub techno, and I like it for the same reasons - you can tune it out and let it exist in the background, but you can also concentrate on it and have a bit of a bop. Utility music! Fave tracks - "Good Times" is obviously the one I recognized. "A Warm Summer Night" stood out from the ones I hadn't heard before - need to revisit it in the summer!
Not much to say except, damn that bass is funky.
fundamental to hiphop.
Cool album cover. Disco in small doses kind of person but this is pretty good. The influence it had on music is substantial. The choice to include the sound of some tap dancing on My Feet Keep Dancing felt a little strange. Favorite tracks: What About Me and Good Times
Great dance music from the disco era.
Disco is finally making its comeback after the backlash it caught in the late 70s and early 80s. No quicker did music turn its back on a genre than it did with Disco. At its peak the biggest acts were doing disco. The Bee Gees, KISS, Rod Stewart and event the beloved Rolling Stones had disco hits. None of that would have been possible had it not been for Chic. Yes the sound is very dated, but buried under all of that synthy hard hit snare sound is some fantastic music theory that messers Edwards and Rogers created. 4/5.
Good songs that went on too long sometimes
This album is about the bass. Nothing like bass guitar in the 70's. Good Times is the star of the show and really CHICs best song, the bass on that song mmmhhh. The rest of the album is good just not great, however did I mention the bass?.. Yeah that's great..
Nile Rogers is great and this record is a lot of fun. And that is a statement I never thought I’d put in writing.
'Good Times' is a great track and opener. The rest of the album flows like I want a disco album to. Up beat, Dancey, Just a fun time.
Chic is always a fun listen. They pulled together the best parts of funk into a disco format and performed it flawlessly. Nile Rodgers’ guitar work is some of the cleanest I’ve ever heard and Bernard Edwards’ bass work unites the album and is always at the forefront. This album has become influential outside disco, and has made its way into rock, new wave, electronic, and hip hop. The opening track ‘Good Times’ is one of the most sampled tracks ever. My only complaint is that the songs are essentially a loop of the same verse and chorus until the next song.
Fantastic musical work!
Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were the backbone of so much progress in the music scene, though even they couldn't have had an idea that Good Times would become the basis for for an entirely new genre of music: Rap. The instrumentation is so much more complex than I originally thought. I love that the Rhythm section is the core of the band from being session musicians together, and that they had so many musicians come in and guest or add on to their creation.
remember some of these disco faves. 😁
Six solid and slickly produced tracks plus the megahypergiant of disco, Good Times. Impossible not to enjoy. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Good Times Date listened: 21/01/24
Forgot about this song. Smooth listening
I've never been a big disco fan, but I don't hate this. It's definitely on the funkier side of disco; the album is absolutely packed with fantastic bass and guitar lines. You can't help but bop your head and tap your toes. Lyrically, a few of the songs are a little cringey. It's like the unironic version of sendup bands like Scissor Sisters—"A Warm Summer Night" and "My Feet Keep Dancing" come to mind—but there's some good stuff there as well. The tap dance breakdown in "My Feet Keep Dancing" is fun. I wasn't familiar with anyone in the band, but immediately recognized Nile Rodgers (guitarist) upon seeing his photo. Both he and Bernard Summers (bassist) have been hugely influential on popular music, and once you read a list of the artists they've worked with, you can't not hear it (B-52s, Diana Ross, David Bowie, INXS, Daft Punk, etc.)—not to mention the infamous Sugarhill Gang sample in "Rapper's Delight." You can hear their influence in everything from "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen to New Jack Swing to some of the biggest late 90s pop acts (NSYNC, Savage Garden, S Club 7) and into the 21st century disco revival (Robin Thicke, Dua Lipa, etc.). My one big complaint about this album is that too many of the songs simply overstay their welcome. I get that they're made for dancing, but after 6:30, 7 minutes with nothing but the chorus repeating and no real instrumental changes, it gets grating. The second half of the album suffers less from this, but it also contains more of the slower, sadder songs. I'd be a lot more inclined to give the album regular listens if the majority of the songs could be cut in half. Three stars for the music, plus an extra star for its influence and legacy.
Didn't think I knew who CHIC were. Turns out I knew lots of their songs. Disco at it's finest!
Nice album...
4.25
Disco isn't usually my thing, but this album grooves! Somehow it feels more accessible, more timeless than some other notorious disco groups (i.e. Earth, Wind, and Fire.) It's slower, and leans a little more towards R&B and a little less towards funk. Several tracks made me think of specific "throwback" disco tracks from later eras—and after reading about the band it makes complete sense: several members from Chic would go on producing and influencing music for decades to follow, collaborating with David Bowie, Madonna, INXS, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Daft Punk, and many more. I'm going to keep this album in rotation!
Chic is a disco staple. Their song, "Good Times," is instantly recognizable and iconic for the era. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are absolute legends who had incredible influence on musicians across many genres.
Sounds like a dizzy dance on new years night
Funky, funky stuff. Never listened to a full album of Chic but I enjoyed it. Definitely heard the hits from this band. Amazing bass playing throughout, and some great dancing and “baby makin” songs on here.
Quality surprise, disco can be good
Great album. Excellent Sunday morning. Would say a couple of the songs seemed a bit long at the start but I guess that's what the roller disco demands
Surprise baby, here I am I'd like to have a few words with you Just to talk about all of these things That you put me through Oh no daddy, she can stay For once in our lives We can get a straight story Little punk, do it for me Or I'll number your days Every night I pray Can't stand to love you And every night and day I can't stand to love you babe I know that you are a sneak You do these things behind my back You could try to be discreet I let you go Now you think I'm a sap The way that you treated me You'd think I were into S&M I can't deal with it You won't get away with it This album still feels fresh in 2023, and really stands up. 4/5
Nile Rodgers giving heat
God, A Warm summer night gliiiijjjdt echt mn oortjes in. Favo: Good Times, My feet keep dancing, My forbidden lover
Setentero disco.
Starting off the album with a song that I’m familiar with grabbed my attention. A decent album overall.
4/5 This is great disco!
Enjoyed the rythym and bass on this album. Some classic dancefloor tracks. It's a good album, but not a 5/5 for me. It's 3.5/5, so I'm generous and rounding it up to a 4 out of 5
Roller rink soundtrack!
don't even act like you didn't start singing rappers delight when that first track kicked off.
Clearly one of the artistic highlights of disco music. Musically rich, proving that disco can be creative and cool. And lasting
I always have a soft spot for good disco.
Really enjoyable album and now on my go-to list for some feel good music
Nice
Great late disco record! Joyful, fun music!
Loving that Nile Rodgers guitar and the funky disco vibes. A bit samey at times but on a Friday night this would be one pumping album. Now, where's my flowing satin dress?
8/10. Reminds me of what I like, and dislike about chic. Each song has a great sound, but is super repetitive and typically about 5 minutes long, so they can overstay their welcome. I'd like this album a lot less if it was longer
I love Good Times, but the rest of the album could have benefitted from a more diverse selection of moods. It was like 5 disco slow burns in a row to end out the album. Each song individually was pretty good at least. And the bass was going off! 8/10
Wow, where are my rollerskates? I'm going to wear out my white guy overbite jamming to this entire album again.
I can see why Niles was such a massive influence on the music scene. An exceedingly entertaining album.
This isn't a perfect album, but the influence this has had is incalculable. Nile Rogers is a national treasure.
Funky, soulful and definitely Disco. It is clear the effect that Chic and this album have had on modern music and this album still holds up after all this time. Not something that I would listen to in my free time, but I couldn't help tapping along and found hard not to break into dance while listening.
Disco Classic. Long songs. Sounds like if Rappers delight was the original song
Vibey funk for a chill listening session either at 11am or stock for a bougée party.
Essential disco album imo
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Good times, My feet keep dancing, Will you cry
enjoyable album. Mood changing. SmoooooothNfunky. Love organs and wah-pedal guitar No complaints. Added whole album to Apple Music Library
I was in my youth during the disco era -- it peaked in my pre-teen years -- and I was too dismissive of the music that fit the times. I was getting into rock and hard rock and didn't let my ears appreciate this music back then. I sure do now. This album is incredible. So tight, so catchy, and so fun. All layers work superbly well here, and all performances are delivered with such skill. I'm glad I approached this music with a more open ear in recent decades. Some incredible albums made in this style, and this album is an outstanding example of it. Nile Rodgers and Tony Thompson...I mean, come on! Wow. Love the vocals that Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin give us here. All in -- such talent! The full version of "Good Times" (the 8:16 track that opens the album) is a masterpiece.
Fun times, some cool callbacks in modern music
This is fantastic.
Honestly very close to a 5 from me. Couple songs dragged it down. But loved this disco funk action
Now this, is music I love! One of those bands where I've never strayed too far from the singles. And there's some great material on here. A very sweet, short but cohesive album! The lyrical department might be a bit cliche, but I think the essence of Chic is to just dance, feel good and enjoy! 8 out of 10
Great listen, great vibe. Track 2 is not great, but the rest of the album superb. 4/5
Quality disco, the groove abides
It’s good,it washes over you pleasantly all the songs are good, some are too long but the funky disco guitar of Nile rogers is something I really like.
The bass lines are too good.
They have style and they have the funk in their grasps. All-around great and groovy.
Bernard Edwards on bass is one of the highlights of this album and I think that is part of what sets this album apart from other disco albums. If I had a complaint, I would mention the songs are a bit long. When it comes to disco, I think the chorus is probably the only thing that matters and once the cocaine started flying there was no difference in a 4 minute and 7 minute song. This album gets more interesting on repeated listens, even though I am not a fan of disco. I think this album definitely needs to be heard and I may even explore more CHIC, as it is good background music for when I'm working.
This was great! Obvi heading the first song was a realization but the rest of this album is awesome!
Shockingly solid
Nothing to write home about. It's better than mediocre.
disco/dance bangers, great basslines and funky guitar by nile rodgers.
Disco Funk
I like disco music. I like CHIC. + Good Times + My Feet Keep Dancing + My Forbidden Lover + Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)
Would have been a 3, but + 1 due to Bernard Edwards bass - he is awesome
Upbeat and enjoyable album
I absolutely love the disco dancefloor fillers. Disco as a genre is much maligned and that isn't really something we can justify given the massive impact it has (still) on music. Giving young, gay black artists a genre to fully own and develop has been hugely important to western music and one cannot understate its place. That being said. The end-of-the-night slow dance numbers really ain't my bag. This is not the best disco album. But this album has some of the best disco..
first listen that's a funk fest
It's the first time I have had two albums from the same band/artist and I've been waiting for this: another hit from Chic. I enjoyed the disco vibe carried on from the last album with it starting off so so so strong with all I'm able to think about being the end of the Horrid Henry Movie (starting to realise Chic's influence in pop culture I've consumed). It seemed to slightly tail off towards the end but I'd still say that I really enjoyed it. Overall I may say that I'm an avid Chic enjoyer.
Such fantastic disco funk. Pretty much anything Niles Rodgers touches turnstiles into gold. I'm glad I finally got the opportunity to listen to an entire CHIC album...I'll add them to my playlist cause this was fun & I'll see them in about a month opening for Duran Duran. Niles Rodgers helped revitalized DD's career, so it'll be cool to see both bands on the same night. 4 solid stars.
really good!!!
Fun disco album, good mix of dance tunes that I would probably revisit. 3.5/5 rounded up to 4/5.
Not a surprise that I enjoyed this, Nile makes excellent music
Great disco album. Not really any bad tracks. Actually was a lot better than I expected and had way more interesting writing than a lot of other disco groups but that's a significantly low bar. Overall though extremely enjoyable and a seminal disco record. 9/10
Full of great bass lines. Was disappointed when the album finished so I put it on again.
nice
The first 3 songs on this album are borderline perfect. At times they can drag on a bit but the sounds are so addicting you really don't mind. Super close to 5 stars for me but I need this album on vinyl
I don't think it was smart to start the album off with its most recognizable (and best) song, and it was an even bigger mistake was to follow it up with the album's absolute worst song. I still liked this album for the most part tho. 4/5 favs: Good Times, My Feet Keep Dancing, What About Me least fav: A Warm Summer Night
I don’t think the sequencing in this album is great. That being said, it’s a great record to get lost in. Deceptively complex. Dark brooding themes with butt wiggling beats.
4/5 I pretty much loved this album. It was good old fashioned Disco. I didn't realize how repetitive the lyrics were, but it didn't really matter. It felt good to sing along and it makes you wanna dance. That was fun.
oh, Good Times čak i znam i My Feet Keep Dancing. dobar dance album. par pjesama ide na plejliste.
Disco is such good vibes. Some of the songs did get a big repetitive buy I enjoyed “Will you cry”, and obviously “Good times” is a certified banger.
I've got a weird relationship with disco. When I was a little kid, like 7, my brother had the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack on LP and I listened to it over and over. Bet I listened to it hundreds of times. But in general I haven't really liked disco except for the groovy bass lines and wikiwokiwikiwoki guitar. So in general, I've tried to convince myself I don't like disco, because I love rock. But the reality is they can coexist! Peace to all. This was a great album.
This is one of those albums that is just nice and pleasant, with a song practically everyone is bound to know. It's a groovy and fun album full of disco with a couple of slower songs added in. I feel like Good Times is absolutely the best thing on here though, but I never realised how long it actually was. This made it a bit repetitive to be honest, and I feel like My Forbidden Lover, while much shorter, also just repeated itself after about about halfway. I suppose it wouldn't have mattered so much grooving to this in a club. Either way though, still a pretty good album, but definitely most known for just a single song. Favourite: Good Times
Twas good and would listen again
A strong start (obviously) but there just aren’t enough ideas on here to make a full album. All of the songs get repetitive and boring after a couple of minutes. Massive bass line from the opener keeps it a 4 stars though.
