This will be the second k.d.lang album I’ve listened to. I remember being impressed by Shadowland, so I had optimism going into this. Fortunately, the optimism paid off. This isn’t the type of music I’d tend to seek out, but I did enjoy listening while it played today. There is something very calming about the vocals. Mixed in with the instrumentation too, it makes for a pleasant, easy-listening experience. There’s nothing here to blow your mind, but it does make for a nice, cosy sound.

I like this much more than I expected to. The part of me that who’s a bath and some Norah jones really enjoyed this. A little boring she, but calming with a beautiful voice.
enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Solid signing that got me investing throughout.
Constant Craving
Choo choo now leaving the station of idk yet type reviews. This is alot. And I enjoyed it. But I'm pretty sure ill enjoy this much much much muuuuuccchhhh more in a few more listens.
This was quite nice, found it be just a real lovely and easy listen. Save Me was a great song and is one that I've actually gone and added to my playlist. Overall, another great country, blues album from k.d. lang!
I was a bit worried this was going to be chock full of slow jams based on Save Me, but luckily it got better from there. Miss Chatelaine was a fun, upbeat song that I wasn't expecting after the mood from the first song. So It Shall Be was another one I liked. The rest of the songs were kind of forgettable, but I appreciate that it wasn't full of slow country and that there was some variety from song to song. I would put this solidly as a 3.
Remove the word "covers" from my first review and that just about sums this up. I feel like she has a decent voice and the sounds here are decent. But I still find myself pretty bored. Only song that grabbed my interest at all was Still Thrives This Love. So for that I'm getting 2 / 5 excitment.

Kind of the same as Emmylou where it is just a very good country/pop with good singing that was an easy listen. I'd say she wasn't as good of a singer but still could belt it. Constant Craving at the end was the best song. I'm glad I got this album out of the way early in the day because I am just ready for March Madness to start now.
Second k.d. Lang album we've had. Doesn't look as much like lesbian John Cusack on this cover. Meh, maybe a bit better than the last one, but not by much.

Constant Craving came on the radio yesterday and I wondered when I'd get this album. It seems the universe was listening because this showed up today. I bought this CD back in the 90's and thought it was too easy listening so it only got a few plays. I still don't see myself pulling this one out to listen to, although I love her voice, smooth as velvet.
The fact that there is even a single country album on this list is an abomination. the extra star is for kd lang being a fellow canadian
I think "Constant Craving" is the only k.d. lang song I'd heard before listening to this and I gotta say, it's the only real standout on this album. It's easy listening, lang has a lovely voice, but all the tunes go in one ear and out the other. Her general vibe is too cool for her music to sound this bland.

The second this album hits, I get chills, and start sinking into my couch. I am in pure bliss when listening to k.d. lang. This album may somehow be better than Shadowland, which shouldn't be possible as Shadowland is one of the greatest of all time. "Season of Hollow Soul" is her career highlight and one of the best songs ever recorded. That alome would've been worth a 5. But this album doesn't even have any skips. It's goddamn magnificent

Thoughts before listening: I remember KD Lang being a big deal, but it always seemed like very adult contemporary music to me. Soft rock ballads and VH1-only music videos is what this makes me think about. Review: So not really soft rock I guess, more soft jazzy country crooning. k.d. has a really nice voice, but this is pretty boring. "Constant Craving" is a good song, but this is otherwise really dull. 2-stars
k.d. lang! canadian country music! I'm looking forward to this one, as I'm both Canadian and like country music. k.d. has such a great voice, it's clear and emotional. "Miss Chatelaine" is the first track on this album that really got me going. I had a funny moment where I realized that there are a lot of people who don't remember that magazine! "Wash Me Clean" is a beautiful ballad but I'm starting to wonder if this isn't a country record...even though this is k.d.'s genre technically. So far I feel like this is her as a smoky lounge act, we shall see if I feel the same with more listening. "Season of Hollow Soul" has a great dramatic build up and then right back down to a upright bass solo I dig it. It took 8 tracks, but the first hint of country I hear is the guitar in "Outside Myself." Which is also a good song! Okay, so I've now made it to the end of the record. It's good, will I relisten? Probably not. But I do like that I got to listen to a fellow Canadian today. :)

Nice mellow album. Big hit Constant Craving
Give me a crooning lesbian singing 12 sultry songs, and I’m going to enjoy it. Sure, I think k.d. lang’s unique blend of cowboy country, lounge cabaret, and an adult contemporary interpretation of sophist-pop is the perfect genre mix for me, and lang has a golden voice, but it’s also not that deep. Ingénue is great not because it’s groundbreaking; it’s great because it just has some really great songs. While I think there’s a couple low-points of softness that lean toward the bland (e.g. “Wash Me Clean,” “Still Thrives This Love”), those half-steps down are balanced out by the consistency of the rest of the record, especially the high-points that made me legitimately cry, like “The Mind of Love” and “Season of Hollow Soul.” I get how this isn’t for everyone, but this is very much for me.

Growing up my dad used to listen to prog rock all the time. I was never a fan of being forced to listen to genesis in the car as a youth but looking back now, and listening to this, I realise that if I grew up being forced to listen K.D. lang I probably would have turned to hard drugs.

I really enjoyed this album. Totally mellow. Great songwriting start to finish. Very relaxing to listen to while I was working and didn't even realize I had gone through the whole album lol. Not something I'd normally grab and play and I have listened to almost nothing by K.D. - but this was very well done. Was not watching names of songs as they went through - I recognized one of them that I think was a hit on radio. Rest was great. Similar feel as something as like a Carole King perhaps, but not as good. Nothing jumps out as a 'wow' moment at all so I'll go in the middle, but I have no issues with this album.
I am about to go through so many albums today. Through my album journey today to catch back up, this would’ve been a great option for the last one to listen to(and I don’t mean that in a bad way). k.d. lang had such a calming essence about the music they created here. The entire album is just warmth. It’s soothing and relaxing to listen to and the way they sprinkle in some international elements into the songs is amazing. Overall, this was a beautiful piece of art. With that being said, I’m not sure I would listen to it entirely again, but I’m happy ears had the chance to hear it at least once.
She has a really unique voice that is really pleasing to listen to. I just never was able to get invested in the songs themselves as it’s really not my kind of music. While I can appreciate the voice, the songs itself weren’t for me and I wouldn’t listen to them again.
I knew a bit about k.d., but this reinforces the incredible voice and excellent lyrics.
This album is hard for me. The singing is excellent, the production is crystal clean and inspired, the instrumentation is creative. But despite all these things I just love this album. It’s too slow for me which is more an indictment of myself than the album. I liked the last song on the album and also the first song. But ultimately I just wasn’t a huge fan of the album as a whole.

I think I heard the name kd lang but up to this point I didn’t even know it was a woman, so I don’t know what to expect. This is kind of adult contemporary pop. I can’t say I’m a fan. It’s very dull. KD Lang is a strong vocalist and the arrangements do well to showcase her voice. It’s just that outside of that there’s nothing going on and the songs are pretty corny. I find it very hard to get through this thing.

k.d. lang owes me a lot of money. She has been living rent free in my head for over 30 years. Her performance of Constant Craving at the 93 Grammys has stuck with me since I was 7 for some reason. I've never been to therapy but I suspect her short hair ( along with Rae from Free Willy) were the start of something. At any rate, I've also never bothered looking for anything other than "constant craving" in all this time. It has always been the song for her. I did like most of the album as well. Accordion made some of the songs sound somewhat European in a good way. Pretty solid from top to bottom. I went back to rewatch the Grammy performance and couldn't help but think she kind of looked like if all 3 Friends boys had a baby. I don't mean any disrespect, was just a playful observation. Favorite track "Constant Craving" 4/5

KD Lang is one of those artists where I have always been familiar with a couple of songs (Constant Craving & Miss Chatelaine), but I've never actually listened to her beyond those. Found a few pleasant surprises here, and a few songs that just kind of plod on. It's aight.
Soft, slow, and country-ish isn't usually my thing, but this one just hit the right spot. Some songs came and went without leaving an impression, but most of them were quite nice
Really interesting. I enjoyed her voice quite a bit, and the sort of loungy, cabaret feel was not what I was expecting. There's a lot of Latin-sounding rhythms which were also not expected, but with more country acoustic guitars and fiddle. Oh, and some Italian-esque accordian stuff. Quite an intriguing mix of stuff going on.
I am so surprised and mildly embarrassed that I love this so much, but what can I do? I'm a Lilith Fair wine mom at heart. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm not cool. Absolutely loved this.
Constant Craving sits oddly at the end of the album, which up until this point is a collection of smart tunes delivered by a beautiful voice. Didn't expect to enjoy it this much. And the it lifts with the closer, a heartbreaking love song.

Bought the CD of this, still around somewhere, got totally swept up by the hype, a country album for the mainstream, but it's a bit bland now. Lovely songwriting and great voice. But haven't wanted to put it on for years.
I can't remember the last time I heard a voice as clear and crystal clear as this one! It's so nice to listen to. The album is so good that it's almost impossible to find any flaws. I'm giving it 4 stars for personal taste reasons: it's not something I'll listen to every day. But as a music lover, it definitely matches the theme of the site and it's definitely an album to listen to before you die!
Great listen! I love the coffee-shop vibe of early 90's singer/songwriters and the fact that k.d. Lang has such variety in instrumentation and style. Very enjoyable album, I'll be looking into more of her stuff. "Constant Craving" transported me to a CVS Pharmacy.

One too many adult contemporary albums this week. I was pretty much checked out the entire runtime here. Lang’s voice is solid, but the songwriting is about as milktoast as it gets.
My irrational grudge against k.d. lang stems purely from her association with my least favorite Bond movie (Brosnan's masterclass in banality: Tomorrow Never Dies), and the adult contemporary slog that is Ingénue does not help her case.

The problem I had with this album is that Miss Chatelaine and Constant Craving were so overplayed at one point, that I still dislike them. I likely will have Constant Craving stuck in my head for awhile. I think k.d. is a great singer, I think she had some great musicians on board. I still didn't enjoy it though, but I do recognize that's on me and my tastes, and not that it's objectively not a good listen.
I actually liked this album more than I thought I would after listening to the first song. Once I heard that country twang, I kind of rolled my eyes a bit thinking "Oh boy, buckle up", but there's some good tunes in here. Miss Chatelaine and Constant Craving were great! Still Thrives This Love's guitar intro is also cool, but then it fades away. The vibe of the song is cool though. I can see someone performing some interpretive dance to this song and really bringing out the emotion from the song. The rest of the album... meh. I did notice that a lot of the songs started off weak, but the more it played and as the song unfolded, it became decent. It's a 2/5, but a strong 2

This had a bit of a throwback vibe, a nostalgic element, that I found captivating. That said, it didn't offer enough variation or energy to keep me interested over the full play.
"Ingénue" is the second studio solo album by Canadian singer k.d. lang. Pop, country, folk and jazz are the Wiki-listed genres and they all fit. This album has a more cabaret tone than her more country earlier work. The album was produced by Greg Penny, Ben Mink and lang. Mink and lang were the writing partners for most of the songs. It was her most successful album on the pop charts reaching #3 in the UK and #18 in the US. "Save Me" opens the album. A giddy-up drum beat, slide guitar, piano and a xylophone (not the last time) . lang's vocals and the harmonies are subtle. Sort of a dreamy country fusion. "The Mind of Love" moves things in a more pop direction. Acoustic guitar and bossa nova beat. lang is talking to herself; why does she fight and hurt herself. The second single "Miss Chatelaine" was a homage to Lawrence Welk. My grandfather made me watch Lawrence Welk; I think I'd like it much more now. Anyway, this song tosses in an acoustic guitar, strings, a Latin beat and an accordion. And it works. One of the best songs on the album is "So It Shall Be." A song that builds. Isolated vocals, nice harmonies. Oh, yeah that xylophone again. She's longing for a person. The album ends with lang's big one "Constant Craving." lang's vocals, the backing vocals and harmonies soar. Strings, acoustic guitar, accordion and a xylophone interlude. Yearning, longing is an inevitable part of life. This album has a bigger sound than her debut. There's pop, baroque, cabaret, ballads and jazz. Creative uses of instruments. I also sensed Spanish, Latin and Middle Eastern influences. A high level of production specifically on the harmonies and backing vocals. But, of course, the focal point of the album is lang's vocals - emotional and adaptable to any style. This is a very good album and worth a listen beyond "Constant Craving."
Production and musicianship is good and I know she's a good songwriter, but this ain't for me.
I definitely know of this artist. I know a few tracks, not quite sure if they are off this album. I mostly know the tracks off the radio. Not my type of music. Definitely respect their music.

Lovely voice and nice melodies.
A great singer who seems to have a hard time finding the right material. I think this is probably her finest outing (so far?). Constant craving really great tune top to bottom if I can't get over the idea of using it for some pharmaceutical commercial.
I know she's a pretty iconic name among singer/songwriters, but I've never really managed to get into her style or music aside from the occasional single. So this wasn't quite the magical experience (or memory) for me that I think it is for others. It all seems so earnest and serious, but little joy or really much emotion at all; it kind of feels like a more modern version of the kind of tunes you'd hear in an old-fashioned Italian restaurant. (I'm not sure how or why she felt compelled to call this album a "postnuclear cabaret", a phrase that promises so much more than what she's delivered.) Since this album has her most well-known songs ("Constant Craving" and "Miss Chatelaine"), I'd kind of hoped that this would be the sole k.d. lang album in this collection. Sadly, no. But I *am* glad to find out that she did most of the soundtrack to the quirky movie "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", as I enjoyed the movie and music. That doesn't really boost her rating here, though.
I've heard kd lang sing some amazing songs however none of them were on this album.
I can't pretend that I was very excited by the sound of country-influenced adult contemporary. But k.d. lang has put together a pretty decent album here with more going on than I expected. The opening tracks didn't move me much but I appreciate the stylistic shift of 'Miss Chatelaine', which sounds like it comes from an upbeat musical. The instrumentation on 'So Shall It Be' and 'Still Strives This Love' are striking and soulful. But 'Constant Craving' is very clearly the stand out track on the album. So much so that it's surprising that it's been left for the final track. I can't say that I loved the whole album but k.d. lang can clearly write some good songs.

I feel sometimes I forget that one of the more exciting aspects of doing this project is finding music that I never would have found on my own. I don’t know how obscure k.d. lang is in the musical landscape, but she wasn’t ever really on my radar. The genres for this album alone are all over the place. Pop, country, folk, jazz and apparently new wave? What is this shit, I asked prior to jumping in. I wasn’t expecting much at all. But this album blindsided me. This album is smooth, mostly thanks to k.d.’s outstanding vocals and the stellar production. I understand that most will find this kind of stuff boring or background material and I respect that opinion. I might even say that some of the middle tracks did kind of drag a bit, hence why this won’t be part of my 5-star gang. But in my opinion, it’s a lot better than what I was expecting. Favorite track: Constant Craving Other hits: Save Me, Season of Hollow Soul, Miss Chatelaine, Outside Myself
"Constant Craving" remains an all time song. The rest of the album doesn't rise to that level. Still better than her country debut that's already appeared in my list.

The album really started to stick with me more and more as it went on. Then, of course, the "hit" at the end seals it. I have not been a big fan of k.d. lang, but this album really plays to her strengths. Ben Mink was a great collaborator for her here. I guess I always thought of her more in the country vein, which I do not know why. This is obviously firmly planted in the 90s pop genre. She really brought some interesting ideas here. I didn't like this album as much as her debut, even though this one is her best-selling album. Maybe I missed the stripped down style of her first one. For that reason, I did quite like Save Me and Wash Me Clean. And I did enjoy the album more more on multiple listens - a couple songs that grew on me were The Mind of Love and Still Thrives This Love. And though I didn't love them when they came out I now don't mind her two big singles Miss Chatelaine and Constant Craving. Not a bad album overall.

И как бы по всем параметрам, это суперский альбом прямо в моем духе. Но по итогу я чувствую, что за очень пышным и действительно впечатляющим продакшном скрываются не самые интересные песни. Лучшая песня - Constant Craving.
I was quite interested in this album at first. I hadn't heard anything from k.d. lang before. The beginning wasn't thrilling, but I thought it would develop. As the album progressed, I was less and less interested. After the battery on my speaker gave up the ghost during the 5th track, I didn't feel like listening to the rest of the album. The best thing I can say about the album is that it wasn't annoying. But I didn't have to listen to it either. I later read a few other comments about the album. In one of them, the track Constant Craving was explicitly mentioned and praised. I then listened to this track specifically, and lo and behold, I already knew it. I probably heard it on the radio in the 90s. I liked it then and now. I won't be listening to the rest of the album, but this track will be on my playlist. 3/5
I am not into k.d. lang at all, but she does have a beautiful voice. This album was a bit of a surprise back then after hearing her earlier country-punk tunes from time to time. The production on this album is stunning. It was a bonus to learn that Ben Mink was involved. I remember him well as he took over for Nash the Slash in the band FM. Sorry, it's a Canadian thing, but the guy is a legend!
Her voice is good, I just don't always like the songs themselves.
A couple of solid tracks, but it doesn't really jive with my tastes. 3.3 stars

This was fine. I liked the first few tracks but the rest of this didn't resonate.
It's beautiful and lang's voice is undeniably flawless. Feels like old-fashioned lounge-music from long ago. Quite nice but other than Constant Craving, unmemorable.

Pre-listening thoughts: I KNEW constant craving was a lesbian anthem. I could smell it. But also every time I hear that song I think of glee cause they bodied that cover Post/during listening thoughts: kd lang has such a lovely singing tone. I reallyyyy hate to give two fives in a row (I’m literally love maxing and enjoyment pilled) but the harmonies! The instrumentation! The lyricism! It’s all there and it’s gorgeous. This style of music is so sitting in a hammock on a summer day but also laying on your cold bathroom tile contemplating where you went wrong. I should start by saying that this kind of low key adult contemporary music with the occasional country twang is absolutely not my thing. Not that I hate it. It just would never occur to me to listen to it. But I'll do my best. The first thing to note is that k.d. lang is an excellent singer. The music and lyrics are…fine. I can recognize what they are going for, appreciate it, but still not really like it. But Constant Craving is a bop! 3⭐️

Do you like calm music? Then this album is for you. save you is pretty good the lyrics are great. The beat is good and the artist has a great voice. The other songs are decent it just they kinda sound the same. But I would recommend this album if you were tryna relax or sleep.
I thought this album was alright. While its lyrics were decent, it kinda felt like mush to me. It was generally hard for me to actually here them. The music was alright, it did go with the lyrics, but at some parts it kinda didn't. overall, this is a middle of the road album in my opinion

have you ever heard a song and it ever reminded you of the beach that's what this album reminds me of I think its good and in the beginning it kinda has like a calm day at the beach and it also kinda reminds me of SpongeBob because of the beachy sound in the album i think the lyrics are okay but I don't really like rham I I more like how the instruments are and the beachy sound I think this album is good because of the beachy sound in the beginning I would recommend listening to this album.
seems like the song is about fighting with reality. also, it looks like he's physically and mentally numb due to losing somebody that he loves. i don't like it or hate it, but i understand why some people listen to this album, because it could be relatable to some. lastly, the song mostly talks about the bitterness of love and how difficult it can be at times.
Do you like Jazz country slow music? I really don't because I like music that is fast, and I rarely like Jazz. Also this is kinda like a love album. I don't like love songs either. So that is why I don't recommend this album.

Do you like slow music? If so, this album is for you! K.D. Lang is an excellent slow music artist, however, I'm not fond of it (her music). One reason is that I don't like slow music. Another reason is that I feel like I'm going to fall asleep listening to her music. I only recommend you listen to her music if you like slow music. If you don't, I recommend you don't listen to her music.
I think this album is kind of bad. I don't really like the beat of the songs in the album or how slow it is. I don't recommend this song to people who like faster songs.

This was an ok listen. The vocals were good and the instrumentation was pleasant albeit a little on the simplistic side. I didn't mind listening to this but there wasn't really anything that would bring me back.

This album deserves a 4 but depending on my mood I could totally give this a 3 and be okay with that. There's a couple songs that are kinda upbeat like track 3 and track 7, but otherwise it's all slower stuff. Thats not really a bad thing but when it's an entire album of that it can get a little old by the end. She does a great job with the slower stuff, has a great voice. Track 7 was my personal favorite off this album.

Even as soft background music I was ready for this to just be over. Sounds like music they'd play in a department store while you're stuck shopping with your mom, & you've been ready to leave for an hour now.

def the biggest surprise for me so far, i really did not expect to like this based on the genres, but i found it to be quite beautiful and strangely similar to a lot of the more dreamy music i tend to listen to on occasion.

She has an exceptional voice, but I've never heard of her before. Excellent production, easy listening big time. Season of Hollow Soul is very ABBA-esque. The lyrics are very self-centered and not really deep.

The album throughout leaves enough of a hook on the listener to leave them impressed and eventually come back for more. Favorites: Save Me, The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, So It Shall Be, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul, Constant Craving.

Love gay people so much, this was fun. Not many tracks stood out but it was easy listening!
Overall a really solid album, but it's crazy how much more work it feels like went into "Constant Craving" in terms of production and layers.

This album became a discussion piece over the dinner table regarding LBGTQIA+ rights and the Biblical History of Lilith. Modern kids don’t have any context for the monumental barriers LD Lang and Melissa Etheridge broke to make modern artists expand their market share by waving a Pride flag. They were the first two openly gay artists I knew, and both of them moved the narrative from their sex lives to their music. In truth, KD Lang had my respect even when I was homophobic (I was dumb) because she had the confidence to be unabashedly herself. Her voice is beautiful, but I always found her music to be a little too Chardonnay on the coach for my personal tastes. Save Me is a slow marinade while Still Thrives This Love is my standout. This is a 5/5 for someone and should be, but I don’t know how often I would look for this.

This album definitely sounds older than 1992, however I didn't mind the album although a lot of lyrics are repeated and it gets a little bit samey. Overall this album wasn't too bad so I will give it a 3/5.

So, my very first impression of this was that it was uncomfortably country. Thankfully this proved to be a short-lived thing and she rapidly became a crooner. A very, very accomplished coroner with a voice made of pureed angels. Way better than I was expecting, although everything felt kinda like it was a cover. Even when it wasn't.

I've never really listened to K.D. Lang before. I really enjoyed this album. Lounge-y, sexy, and romantic. I imagined playing this during a rainy night in with my wife. Beautiful lyrics that really show her yearning for someone.

Eu fiquei com uma preguiça extrema quando vi que era mais um álbum da k.d.lang. Já tinha sido me recomendado o Shadowland, que achei fraquíssimo. Porém com esse minha experiência foi melhor, ainda não é o tipo de música que vou ouvir e nem sei se colocaria nessa lista, mas foi melhor que o outro.
another k.d. lang album on this collection. she's really got a specific style of writing country music, softer and sophisticated. this is country not for chugging beer, but for sipping wine. this is mother country. honestly it's pretty decent. lang's voice paired with these glitzy and relaxing instrumentals go hand in hand. it's a very pretty sounding country album. i wouldn't say it's the kind of music i listen to normal but i'm giving it a shot and a seal of approval.

This was an OK album, which I could see myself appreciating more if I was in a more melancholy mood. As it is, nothing really impressed me until "Constant Craving," but that's kinda... the last song on the album.

-Her voice is really nice! I’ve heard of Constant Craving but never really listened to it until now -Aside from the vocals I really liked some of the percussion, it gave the album kind of an exotic/wistful feel -Favorites are Season Of Hollow Soul and Constant Craving
