Easy listening
YouTube music really didn't want to play me this. Maybe I can't pronounce the title. Constant Craving reminds me of Atlantic 252. Why did I ever listen to that station?? Pretty mellow apart from that one really.
Ok for music in the background. Not sure I'd sit down and listen to the album. The Mind of Love - quite good. So it shall be - I liked Constant Craving - good song, much better than the rest of the album A straight, no frills, no lace 3
Great voice, not a big fan of the country-ish style, but gotta give a girl props for coming out in the early 90s, esp. in that genre.
I actually enjoyed this album and music a fair bit! It was perfect for a leisurely walk in the drizzling rain!
Pleasant but didn’t stand out to me
Would have been better if k.d. focused on the country genre more. Too many different styles. Didn't really like the jazzy nightclub vibe on some songs. Overall competent, but nothing really stuck out. The hit "Constant Craving", is a reasonable mid-tempo song.
It was fine. Just not really to my taste.
Not unenjoyable, but not something I'll come back to. Not really my type of music.
Blah
B- Save Me 3 The Mind Of Love 3 Miss Chatelaine 4 Wash Me Clean 3 So Shall It Be 3 Still Thrives This Love 4 Season Of Hollow Soul 3 Outside Myself 3 Tears Of Love's Recall 3 Constant Craving 3 This was actually really good, pretentious name aside.
Didn't expect to like this so much, but it was really good. KD has an amazing voice and the harmonies are so lush. I liked the more upbeat tracks like "Miss Chatelaine" and, of course, "Constant Craving," but even the more low-key stretches are a pretty nice vibe.
Better than the other kd lang album, but still not really for me. 2.5/5
Definitely not as country (or...country at all) as her previous work - obviously highlighted by the big single "Constant Craving" - I do really like that song, most notably the background harmonies. It's a pretty laconic album - not necessarily a critique, but it's not ever exciting in any way. So if you're going in looking for that it's definitely a losing battle... But overall it sounds fantastic - very clear and intimate-sounding. Sounds like damning with faint praise but it's just a *nice* album, and I do very much enjoy kd's voice - a great singer that still doesn't dominate the songs nor overdo it at any point. Had been wondering about having the big hit as the last song, but honestly after listening to the album it's really nice to end with it - just a tremendous song and I don't know if I can explain *why* I like it so much. It's the arrangement, her voice/harmonies, the instrumentation - extra point for an album that ends with a killer track. 7/10 3 stars
Some good things on the album. Soft listening.
very nice album, not my usual style of music but she keeps the slow ballad songs interesting, here and there a rare touch of sounding whiny
The rest of the songs on this aren’t bad, all well done songs. I just wasn’t connecting with any of them. And I knew what was coming at the end. Constant Craving is an all timer.
Sweet, soft und belanglos
Sad cowboy kinda
Decent
lang's voice is superb, but her music here consists mostly of ballads and love-songs done in a style that doesn't quite square with other entries in this list. It's hard to go from 70s Punk, 80s Wave, 90s Brit Pop, 2000s Electronica, and so forth, to cabaret-style Canadian pop and feel that you are giving the album its due. But I chose to listen to an album a day in order to broaden my musical horizons. And with this album, I feel I have.
Such a voice. Not sure why this is on the list but a good listen all the same.
Pop-jazz. Ni fu ni fa.
Constant Craving.
Beautiful album. KD Lang is a national treasure 3/5
Superou as expectativas negativas por esperar um country meloso. As arranjos e cantos agradaram bem.
Lang moves away from her country-dominant style into something more diverse, primarily folk pop with some aspects of country, Latin, cabaret, and New Age, on top of an orchestral backing. The intro track is the only song that closely resembles her previous work. I'm actually quite fond of it. Much lusher than her previous work, and it works fairly well. Lots of interesting ideas, and it's consistent. Some standout tracks, even if nothing blows me away too hard. Only a few tracks that had little to offer. Favorites: Miss Chatelaine, Outside Myself, Constant Craving
Torchy and easy on the ears. Not without its charms, but frequently bland. k.d. lang sounds marvelous here, but this collection of songs lacks the twang and charisma of her earlier work. Fave Songs: Miss Chatelaine, Wash Me Clean, Still Thrives This Love, So It Shall Be, Constant Craving
Very chill listen. It's Pretty average to me I would say but good nonetheless
Left no impression at all
Da e nok ikkje ein ny favoritt, men skal gi plusspoeng for at da pirra nysgjerrigheten litt
Although this well produced, smooth jazz pop album features solid vocals, it didn't quite hit the spot. It's very good, just not my cup of tea
I want particularly listening, sorry. There was something nice about seasons in the middle, and Constant Craving at the end, which I think was the theme to Green Fried Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Café. (Quick Google: Nope, it was a Nob Dylan cover). Probably enjoyable, if you're paying attention.
A great ballad album. I didn't know she had this, but she was a fine singer. I would have like more up tempo tracks.
Feels like a dream sequence from some weird 90s movie or tv show, especially noticeable on Wash Me Clean. PeeWee's Funhouse Dream core
kd lang is both supremely talented and not really for me. "Miss Chatelaine" is a bop. "Constant Craving", the one song I knew prior, is a hell of an album closer.
listening to this, thinking "come on, why haven't the boygenius fans resdiscovered this yet??"
I rather enjoyed this album. Nothing else to say.
Not my thing but a talented artist.
Flawless vocals, zero emotion, one big hit (which is far and away the best song on the album), no clear structure or story, vaguely country-tinged, fairly dull. If that lot doesn't add up to 3.00 stars, I don't know what does!
A quiet album with lots of emotion. Not especially my thing, but I feel like I wouldn't mind it while eating dinner at a wedding. I feel like there should be a way to do two and a half stars.
Good listen for a chill Sunday. k.d. lang has one of the best "aching for love" voices in music.
Good, but Constant Craving is outstanding
Buenas canciones de una cantautora con estilo. Algún tema tuvo cierta pegada por aquella época. Personalmente, le ha faltado chispa
Dinnertónlist fyrir allan peninginn. Mér finnst þetta mjög gott fyrir það sem það er. Gæti vel sett þessa á fóninn ef ég man eftir henni á meðan ég elda sunnudagssteikina.
Þægileg tónlist sem rennur ljúflega í bakgrunninum. Ekki grípandi samt.
beautiful voice, but aside from that everything is soo soft, predictable. maybe just not my cup o' tea
Relatively pleasing
Smooth, the country chanteuse over some nice pedal steel. Not stellar and all in a very similar lane. Coffee shop stuff
Had never heard k.d. lang before this, and this album hasn't put me off but also hasn't inspired me to check put more, not my thing.
It was pretty good.
Look, I really like k.d. Lang’s voice. She’s an amazing singer and makes this album listenable despite its flaws. That said, the slick production grated on me at times, especially all the tracks with goddamn lame-ass bongos.
Love the bits of country twang sprinkled in. Hard to deny her voice and some of the arrangements are really incredible, unfortunately not my cup o' tea otherwise would be higher.
Not for me. Good singer
Liked this album a lot actually. I only knew constant craving but this was a vibe for sure.
Dubbed 'carabet' style. Good vibe and harmonies, production. 3.5
3.5/5
I knew only of Constant Craving before listening. It wasn't bad, just not my type of music. I liked Miss Chatelaine.
It was good and I remember listening to it when it came out. A different style.
listening to every album from 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die has taught me to avoid any album whose only Reception/Legacy fact on wikipedia is its inclusion on 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die
3.3 - In middle school, you might hitch a ride home with a buddy, and his mom would be playing this CD. You're not friendly enough with the family to suggest switching to WBCN, and your buddy isn't saying anything so you just sigh and look out the window. This record is lame but endearing as "mom rock" tends to be. First, though K.D. Lang's voice is powerful, she's a hopeless crooner and moans for the entirety of this record about all her various heartaches. Second, Lang has ditched the country in favor of cabaret so there are lots of oriental instrumentations applied with a slightly heavy hand, which makes much of this record sound precious. Third, to accentuate the preciousness, Lang has incorporated all this fancy diction and latinate phrasing, giving us song titles like "Still Thrives This Love", "Season of Hollow Soul", "Tears of Love's Recall." All in all, I once again feel feel like that middle school boy who has to roll his eyes and suffer through this record.
Singer/songwriter, god vokal, akustisk guitar, poppet, lidt country-vibe
Da e nok ikkje ein ny favoritt, men skal gi plusspoeng for at da pirra nysgjerrigheten litt
Ännu ett mysigt rock album. Fina låtar och hon sjöng fint? Favorit: Season of The Hollow soul
alright
Nothing like the awesome “Reintarnation,” but some good, well performed tunes.
Not at all what I was expecting. Very lush sounding
Constant Craving
3.5 - very pleasant listening
Background music
Was not expecting to enjoy this, but well I got fully swept along with it. I probably dropped out around the second cabaret song though. So that's the second half of the album where I never really fully came back, and I obviously know Constant Craving backwards. Pleasing listen overall.
Good album. Easy to listen to. k.d. lang has a beautiful voice. “Constant Craving” is the only song I have heard before.
Not my scene. A few nice songs.
classy
Pop-jazz. Ni fu ni fa.
It’s decent. Kinda late writing this so i cant list my favs and least favs but the project is decent. Nothing more 3/5
Better than her debut for sure, but it was still too inconsistent to earn a 4 star listening experience. But, when it was good, it was reallyyyy good.
Mooi album en mooie stem. Niks meer, Niks minder
Goed te hebben maar ook heel braaf binnen de lijntjes gekleurd door K.D.
Niets mis mee, maar totaal niet interessant eigenlijk.
An interesting combination of folk, country, jazz - even elements of chanson. A very enjoyable listen, although it blended into the background a little. Constant Craving is clearly the standout song, but nothing was appalling or offensive. Then again, nothing particularly grabbed me either. It might be a little bloodless - very much lacked any kind of anger or passion, but then it's not that kind of album. Would probably be a 3.5 - even one better song would push it to a 4. A nice album, but I'm in no rush to put it on again.
Cat: voice like an angel! Some cool stuff, some nice stuff, but the Latin rhythms get kinda old for me.
Pop album that showcases Lang's voice more than focuses on the music (which is pretty at times - "So It Shall Be"). In the Nora Jones/Sarah McLachlan mold. Pretty decent listen, but album started to drag on a little too long for my liking.
Yeah I think this was fine but it didn't blow me away. Pleasant music and I'm sure there is some solid songs writing in there. Thought the lyrics were predictable and a bit cringe at times though
Absolutely fine but a bit boring
Liked this better than the first lang album I had on the project – this one feels more confident, a bit more surefooted in its arrangements and style. Appreciated how tracks took typical country standards and played them against differing instrumentation and structures to make something fresh.
Ganske behagelig sangstemme
This is some laid back lesbian vibes for sure. I kinda like it, but it may not hold up to repeat listening for me personally.
Pretty good.
relax muy tranqui agradable pero no me encantó
3.5
Maussade, répétitif et manque de contraste entre les chansons, mais elle a une belle voix et l’arrangement instrumental est bien mené
Charming and relaxing. Maybe a little too relaxing, I began feeling sleepy.
Great voice, easy listening. The last song is the best, I remember loving it back in the day.
So, k.d. lang's voice is undeniably angelic. Her soaring voice is matched with beautiful instrumentation. That said, it's honestly just one big, sad, sleepy album; it was just a constant musical valley that never reached any kind of peak of excitement. Singer songwriter music can tend to lean this way, but this album was definitely exceedingly so. The previously mentioned instrumentation is probably the biggest variation to be found here, as there are mixes of pop, folk, country, and even Latin sounds among these tracks. One outlier and exception to all of my judgment of this album is the song "Constant Craving". This closing track is the crown jewel of the album; while it is still true to the tone of the album, it really shows a more upbeat track that is not present anywhere else on this album. I'm curious about the decision to hold this until the end, but hey. This song is one of lang's best for sure. While I was ultimately lulled by this album and not particularly into it, it was still a nice listen and definitely reminded me of the gorgeous voice of k.d. lang, a voice that played heavily into influencing the female singer songwriter movement of the 90s. Probably somewhere between a 2.5 and 3 on enjoyability, so I'll just round up. It's probably fitting to round up, anyway; while it may not have amazed, I've always been a sucker for "Lilith Fair music".
I remember 'Constant Craving' being huge at the time. 3 / 5 stars.
Compared with the previous k.d. lang album I got, this was not one I particularly enjoyed. It just felt a little generic. Like half-hearted? It's hard to describe but I didn't care for it as much. 2.5/5
Mostly not my cup of tea, but the version I had had constant cravings on it, which I love. Much better than the last K.D. album I had on this project.
This was a pleasant listen. The sort of album I reckon people love if they've heard it in the car from a young age. Very difficult to dislike the folksome instrumentals paired with clear, crisp vocals. Ingenue probably goes well with a glass of cloudy lemonade in the garden. It's domestic and charming, lyrically it doesn't goes much beyond that.
So good. What a voice and loved the various instruments used for such an interesting mix of influences. Very much appreciated the artistry but doubt I would listen to this again.
Not my style but good
Very good but not the type of music I'd listen to on a regular basis.
got me sleepy, but quite pleasant
Cool voice, couple of good songs, but this is pretty boring.
KD Lang has an incredible voice, but this album was just a bit too adult contemporary for me. I found it to be somewhat lifeless.
It's pleasant
Väldigt vuxet, men bra röst.
Few nice tracks on here.
It's good. Not something that I might regularly put into the jukebox.
I like kd lang's voice. Most of these songs are pretty forgettable, very pleasant and easy to listen to, but nothing really sticks other than Constant Craving.
Not really my thing but OK I guess
Scale: 1: Dissapointing 2: Didn't enjoy 3: Decent 4: Enjoyed 5: Would listen again (My first impression if not mentioned otherwise in a comment) Save Me: 3/5, decent The Mind of Love: 2.5/5, idk Miss Chatelaine: 1/5, dont like it Wash Me Clean: 3.5/5 chill So It Shall Be: 1.5/5, meh Still Thrives This Love: 2.5/5, ok Season of Hollow Soul:4/5, cool Outside Myself: 3.5/5, fine Tears of Love's Recall: 1.5/5 idk Constant Craving: 2/5 meh Overall: 2.5/5 ok most of the time, barely a 3
Like so many other albums I've heard on my journey through this list so far, none of the songs on this album stood out to me to where I'd add them to my liked playlist on Spotify. But I don't think I'm the target audience, either, and I did not think any of them were particularly bad. K.D. Lang has a beautiful voice and the composition of each song was equally as beautiful. I can also appreciate how she might've been influential, herself. This album was clearly a work of love about what it's like to fall in love and I'm happy to have heard it to deepen my appreciation of music overall.
This album is so goddamn boring. I can’t really find anything wrong with it, but it’s so impossible to get into. Nothing at all to latch onto. 3/5
It's clearly the work of a talented musician, but it's not for me, sadly.
This never would have appealed to me, and there's definitely only one "constant craving" on this album. But I'll give credit for talent where it's due.
Het is de week van de saaie muziek geloof ik. Goede stem, goede muzikale begeleiding. Maar zero prikkels. Niets bijzonders. Ik kom op 2.5 ster. @1001: Mogen we nu weer even knallen met het volgende album?
Hadn't listened to a k.d. lang album before, beyond the appearance in Pee Wee's Christmas Special. This was a calming album. She has a great voice and the songs were easy listening even though it's listed as "singer/songwriter". No tracks stood out or anything, but I liked this album.
I didn’t like this one as much as Shadowland. This sort of 90s countrylite isn’t really my scene, but I can understand why others would like it. She has a great voice.
Actually quite a nice album. I've heard rumours she's a country musician but I'm not having it. Musical, melodious, easy listening - short, sweet and listenable while interesting enough. I'm, very literally, not a fan but I can see why others are and the album certainly does not offend.
Extremely comforting music.
I enjoyed this more than I thought i would for a country-ish type album. She has just such a beautiful voice.
An interesting album that isn't very special, unless you read a little about the context of the record, certain songs from it and K.D. Lang history. It's a shame that there's still such a persecution and pointless hatred. The context helped with song like "Miss Chatelaine", but unfortunately it didn't change my overall reception of the album. It's a rather usual type of a folk music with po twists that I would to compare to Alanis Morissette, trying to stay in Canada for once. Favourite song - "Season For Hollow Soul", with the orchestral elements and atmospheric composition. The rest of the albumis rather forgettable, but still, I can understand why it is rated high enough to be on the list of 1000 best albums ever.
Pretty somber album, okay listen. I now know where the Constant Craving song that was dominant on the the radio in the 90’s came from.
Good
pölyinenmainen kd lang eli tyttöpoika (lyhyt tukka) kyllä laulamaan pärisemään laittaa, biisit ei kuitenkaan ole kummoisia. kyllä vokaaleja jaksaa kuunnellakkkin mutta ei kummosemmat sävellykset kuitenkaan liian pitkälle asti pötki sentään, paitsi yksi biisi on aivan vitun hyvä joka yksinään HEITTÄYTTÄÄ albumin ylös pykälän paras biisi..... season of hollow soul aivan vitun järisyttävää että toiseksi vähiten kuunneltu mitä vittua niin saatanan hyvä biisi
My co-judge and I were surprised that this was only kd's second album, since it seemed that we were hearing her cowpunk stuff for a long time before Constant Craving. However, most of those earlier albums were with the Reclines. Anyway, she has a lovely deep voice that's right up there with many of the all-time great vocalists that 1001 has thrown our way. My co-judge says it's a bit pop for us and I agree, but I'll add a mark for Constant Craving, which I've always liked and made her career. It was generous of The Stones to voluntarily give her co-writing credit for borrowing the chorus - they could have probably gotten away with it, or won in court. Keith Richards is no Jimmy Page.
I liked it more than I thought I would.
Didn't have the time to listen to the album. I'm already late for the one that popped up on the day after. I did listen to k.d. lang before though, and my recollection was that she has a nice voice, but that her songs are not so compelling, generally speaking. I wish this app could allow me to go back to the few records I've missed and tweak the grades or reviews. But I understand this would be way too complex to manage for the person who conceived the app, so I don't hold any grudge against them. It's still a great app. Number of albums left to review: less than 800, I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums I will keep on my own list: half so far, approximately. Number of albums I might keep: a quarter (including this one) Number of albums I won't keep: another quarter.
Originally listened to the wrong k.d. lang album... Love the way the instrumentation builds in a couple of these songs Huge credit to the musicians for not falling asleep while playing some of this stuff - very simple Kinda hops around a few styles and doesn't really blend any
First of all I did not think this was going to be a chick singing here. She has a great voice. Most of these songs are really relaxing. Constant craving is great ending track! Good album 6/10
Slow but quite enjoyable and soothing, good background music for work.
Pleasant at times, if inconsistent. Best track: Still Thrives This Love
Not really to my taste, but a smooth album. The artist has a beautiful voice, used to great effect.
I don't think there's anything special about this. Even the country twang added no spice in this carefully produced standard pop album. Except, of course, her voice. And somehow, it's enough.
It was good
i liked it. different than i’m used to
Pretty legit voice, enjoyed
This is not what I thought kd lang sounded like, for some reason! I had more ani difranco vibes in my head, this has sheen and mellowness that I wasn't expecting. Nice enough but didn't make a huge impact.
Lang walks the give line between country and folk. Not a bad album, probably won't be returning to it anyone soon.
Balls
sad girl hours
Chill
I thought this was a good country album and would come back to this
Liking the whole vibe- laid back and lyrical. I once listened to this over and over again on a long haul flight and it did the trick and even now her voice has an affect on me. KD is to Country that Nora Jones is to Jazz and it certainly fits the niche.
3.4⭐️
Trea
Ok
Enjoy her voice
Belle voix, bon album, ca secoute super bien 3.85
Great production and vocal display, but the songs just don’t sell the album for me. It’s great lounge and restaurant ambience, but nothing more.
Another of KDs albums that proves to be enjoyable with a little twist. This time the songs had a little "french"-touch to them. Interesting to hear but nothing that would prove to be a difference maker for a higher score
This album was pleasant but didn’t particularly do anything for me. I enjoy KD Lang’s voice and I enjoyed the fact that she freely explores various genres, but nothing stood out to me at all about this album.
Not a bad record, not bad at all.
Had an eclectic mix of vibes. Overall nothing struck me that much but it was a pleasant listen. 3.5
A good album in which lang forsakes her country roots and goes jazz/pop vocalist on us. Generally to quite good effect however I do find things a little slow and plodding at times lacking any sort of upbeat tempos or dynamic shifts. It's a good showcase for her quite amazing voice but I find the songs somewhat lacking. 3 stars
Beautiful sound but perhaps just a bit too cloying for me now. Still I can really understand why it is a 1001 album and I recall loving it at the time.
Liked it much, much more than I expected to
Season of Hollow Soul and Constant Craving I like. And there's that early 90's VH1 vibe to all of this that I find some kind of comfort in. Something how I don't see how this could possibly be a hit these days. It's nostalgia, I guess, for a thread of music that I wasn't very into at the time but still made up a percentage of the atmosphere. Still, I don't get very wrapped up in the songs. Pleasant to have on in the background, but not something I'd put on a lot.
Having never knowingly listened to kd lang, I didn't quite know what to expect - but it wasn't this. From what I'd read, I was expecting something more countrified, but in the main this is quite syrupy pop rock. A couple of numbers land, and it must be said that lang has a remarkable voice - but it can't carry a collection of unimaginative, safe arrangements. A little more grit in the oyster would've benefited this album. Still, if you're after a smooth, well-executed song cycle with a splash of the prairie and a a few neat chord progressions, you could do a lot worse than Ingenue.
Essential listening? Nah. Pleasant? Sure. Could be inspirational to the indie film maker. I can see David Lynch grooving to this stuff and writing another masterpiece.
Not generally my cup of tea, but you can’t deny her voice.
Another one I would have completely ignored when it came out. Again, not exactly my thing but overall I liked it, like torch songs at a bar...not sure I would be rushing back but this seems to be filled with the kind of songs that would be used in films and yet not seeing any films listed on Wiki for it.
Not a fan of K.D. Lange but this is good one! Constant Craving is a classic The rest of the album is high quality. Good Music. 3/5
Constant Craving is good, but I found the rest of the album underwhelming. There were some enjoyable moments within songs, but nothing else really stood out.
I'm enjoying this, in a sort of easy-listening way. I like the songs, I think; for example Still Thrives This Love (the current one) is nice and dark...but it doesn't sound super distinctive. Feel like lots of stuff basically scratches this itch; it's nice, and well done, though. Digging Season of Hollow Soul
It's nothing special. Very much background music. Nothing that offended my ears, but not much to captivate me or draw me in, either. I did like 'Season of Hollow Soul', but that was about it.
k.d. has a beautiful voice, she packs every note to the brim with emotion and her delivery is effortlessly proficient. While Constant Craving is the obvious standout track, the rest just feels like endless buildup to it. Tonally and thematically this album is too homogenous throughout, it gets tired fast. And that's probably why Constant Craving was so successful, it's the only song that stops me in my tracks. It is vibrant, it has motion and life. Has always been.
Nothing bad about this, but it is somewhat boring.
So smooth and polished there was nothing for my ear to grab onto.
Soft rock basically. It's "fine" but I'm pretty indifferent, never would listen to it and I'd probably ask to turn it off if in a car. But, that's just me.
Interesting, but not my genre
Great voice and lyrics Favourite Song: Constant Craving
Pleasant vocals and good sound overall, but something is lacking.
On Lang's second solo record, her transformation from a goofy country and western singer with her band, The Reclines to a cabaret-style, crooner pop singer was complete. Gone are the wire glasses and long skirts and colourful dresses to be replaced with a androgynous look with a boyish hair cut and tailored suit jackets. In some ways I preferred her cowpunk phase, but I was never a fan of Lang in either persona. She does have a great voice and she puts it to maximum use on this album which probably contains some of her best known songs. Not really my taste, but it's listenable and she deserves the accolades and awards from this album.
Not my thing.
Lovely voice and nice simple backing tracks to that. Like "Miss Chatelaine" the most. Not knowing anything about her or the album "Constant Craving" seemed like a change of tone, but a nice ending to the album.
That was a lot better than I remembered it being. Bit lounge-y but still enjoyed it a lot.
Wasn't vibing
"Spoil me Spoil me with you And soil me with the world of you Watch over me with a mother's eyes Judging my worth only to glorify Watch over me" (Save me) Una voz chulísima y un poco vibes de música de ascensor.
6/10
Pleasant. 5/10
I like her tone and style but nothing grabs my attention. Right on the cusp of a 3 and a 4, just between ‘fine’ and ‘enjoyable’.
Classic.
First k.d. lang. Subtle and contemplative in tone. Not bad adult contemporary fare
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Gorgeous voice/production but the hugely popular and instantly recognizable singer/songwriter/folk/country/soft rock/orchestral lounge genre is not typically my cup of tea. Probably about as good as this kind of thing gets though so I'm cool with it being on here.
Just music
I literally have no notes. It was fine. I doubt I'd listen to it again on purpose, but there was nothing offensive or remarkable about it.
This was..fine
I found this album very surprising! To my regret, I didn't know anything about k.d. lang at all, other than that she's a bit of an LGBT icon. I didn't expect such an old soul, folky album. This is a 3 star for me, but it's the best kind of 3 star, because it's one that makes we want to delve into her catalogue a bit deeper.
Interesting style and instrumentation mix. This tackles, or at least shares a perspective on some complex but very real issues.
Nice pleasant easy listening album
This is pretty interesting stuff. Not exactly my jam, but I can respect the songwriting and the range. Pretty cool.
Best female pop vocal ‘93. Runners up: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Annie Lennox, Vanessa Williams.
was fine, really expecting something more
Some good easy listening
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Will listen to more of K.D because of this.
Jazzy vibes, fantastic voice, good, but not my type of music.
The background vocals were nice and the lyrics were good too. But at times it felt very samey. Was like listening to elevator music. Couldn’t tell if I was bored or vibing.
nice voice, kk slider/ hawaii type beat tho
Nice country album, I like it
The more uptempo numbers are the better ones e.g Miss Chatelaine and Constant Craving. I quite enjoyed the album overall.
Enjoyed the big, open acoustic sounds with the added bonus of lap steel guitar. Will revisit both the album and artist.
Average
Pop cabaretero. Multiinstrumentado e hiperarreglado. Muy buena voz y un puñado de buenas canciones. No está mal.
Just really chilling nice to listen album. K. D. Lang definetely puts a big amount of work into her songs. Unforrunately for me it didn't work for me. While listening I wasn't quite struck by it on the emotional level. What a coincindence I got this on the Valentine' s day.
Nice enough. Bit boring.
A genuine treat, listening to k.d. lang. One of Canada's finest singers, we get a nice array of country, singer/songwriter, and tremendous songwriting to back it up. I just find it to be a bit unengaging sometimes, like Lang doesn't want to do too much. Which is fine, but leaves me not yearning to relisten again. A real pity, if you ask me.
Enjoyable. Knew the singles.
Better than I expected. Quite nice.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Favorite track was Miss Chatelaine
Very calming
Semibängeri Helt ok pop/rock musaa. Sån här lägg på i bakgrunden på ett café musik.
She has an amazing voice, but the songs are a bit too easy listening-ish for me. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.
really, not bad. I can tell why she has so many fans. It's just too slow and not electronic enough for me
Chill country jamz, I actually kind of dig this.
Pas fan.
Best wel chill
It’s chill. Reminded me of Starbucks music, but not bad.
It was good. She has a great voice. Not something I'd come back to many times, but certainly the music is enjoyable
2.7
It was just OK - oldschoolcool
Lovely little blend of a multitude of genres (folk, country, pop, jazz, etc). Feels like it's best enjoyed with tea on a rainy day. Great harmonies, too Favorite tracks: "Constant Craving", "Season of Hollow Soul"
She can sing, it’s just really boring
Not at all my thing. This is way too boring.
꽤 괜 낫 배드
Was a little boring.
k.d. is a really talented singer, but my god, these songs were mind-numbingly boring and dragged on forever. The only exceptions for me are "Season of Hollow Soul", "Outside Myself", and "Constant Craving". I heard "Constant Craving" on the radio a ton growing up and it's still a really good song today. Those three tracks were genuinely well-written, but that is about the only good thing I can say about the album. The production style across the rest of the record is just way too sleepy and uniform to keep things interesting. Everything settles into this incredibly slow, adult-contemporary/adult pop crawl that just puts me right to sleep. The vocals are flawless but the lack of energetic tempos, strong hooks, or distinct musical shifts makes the deep cuts completely blend together into one massive, monotonous blur. It feels like she has all the talent in the world but chose the blandest possible arrangements to showcase it.
Me dormí
Might need to Save Me from this album next time.
Kind of whiny. But not in a bad way. Just very 90s mom music.
I thought I liked k.d. lang's music until listening to this. Must have mixed her up with another artist cause this was boring af
4 - beautiful but not very engaging
I normally love sad female singer-songwriters but I found quite a lot of this a bit dreary.
Not something I’d listen to again
Not my style but she can sing.
Very not good. Very good haircut.
K.D. Lang always brings to mind the inbred little boy from the start of Deliverance for some reason. She has the same, slightly autistic look, but her voice doesn't match the look. This is music that's never going to feature on my playlist. At times it sounds like a collection of Eurovision Song Contest entries, at other times it's shopping mall beige. The only question for me is one or two stars. She seems to put a lot into each song, so maybe two stars is fair. But it's also so insipid and boring that I also feel one star is the right score. It ended up actually improving a little bit by the end, so two it is.
idk not for me, nice singing tho
Not sure what to make of this album, very different to what I thought it would be, sounds like something from the 1960s
Another album that I just could not connect with. I liked the country twangs to start but then it just kinda went downhill from there
Really not sure why this is on here. It’s not awful, but I’m still confused
Heard of KD Lang but never listened to her music. Not really sure what it is. It’s very soft folk pop. Easy listening style with some folky notes. It’s not bad, seems a bit repetitive after a while. Not the most interesting, but it’s all fine. There’s not anything that I really think elevates it, despite how great her voice is. Feels like a solid 2. Just doesn’t do much for me.
Pretty dull
snoozefest
I mean I don’t think is a bad album, it’s just way too boring for me. I skipped it after first half
on ronfle
Although clearly quality and got skills felt like trudging through treacle. Not sure. 2
Joj isto loše, dosadno za popizdit. Baš ne znam otkud izvučete ovakve albume. Nije ni čudo da mi je average projekta 2.4 🫠 2/5, 3/10
kd lang has a lovely soothing voice, but everything sounds the same.
hmm no this isn't very good, idk why this is special
Im not saying its bad, I just don’t like it
Slow. Boring. Many of the songs sound the same.
Definitely she has a great voice and the music is pretty and easy to listen to. Doesn't really resonate with me though unfortunately but I can at least appreciate it.
All hard edges removed.
Not for me.
This a weird album for me in that overall it really isn’t my jam, BUT there are a few songs that I do really like. Her voice is fine, the writing is fine, it’s just a little slow and groove-less for me.
Not for me. Felt extremely dramatic, but maybe fabricated? I quickly turned around and listened to De Todas las Flores, which absolutely should be here, but I don't believe it is.
great voice mid music with the exception of constant craving
ja zeker een kd lang album. prachtige stem, natuurlijk, maar het is erg niksige café muziek
Nice enough background music but nothing to write home about...
Elevator music, not inspiring.
Easy listening is a plague on society. I fear this album would consider vanilla to be too spicy
When I first started the 1001 album I got this in my first couple weeks. It fit the vibe of where I was at the beach, and I gave it a 3/5. I gave it another listen now and I find it quite plain and not very interesting
Not my vibe at all
I'm sorry but I found this boring. The understated vocals are nice and it's all solidly, skillfully constructed - but the overall musical picture feels like pure adult contemporary schmaltz. Like a less exciting Sade or something. With French-Canadian accordion. 'Constant Craving' is something of a classic but for me even that is of a genre that I can't really get into.
A parental favourite back in the early 90s, this evokes sickening Sunday afternoon feelings of school rolling round again, an an all-pervading ennui that was anaesthetised by 'The Antiques Roadshow' and the gritty Sunday drama, maybe 'London's Burning'. 'Save Me' lives up to that recollection with a plodding beat and crooning vocal made for a Sunday afternoon. 'The Mind of Love' reconfirms the approach, loose jazzy fingerings pulling the vocal uphill. It's depressing, but by golly is it better than the cabaret schtick of 'Miss Chatelaine', which feels like the attention-seeking one at a party. Whilst 'Season of Hollow Soul' has a rather nice melody, the only true great song here is 'Constant Craving'. Introspective pop par excellence. Add a very good vocal to the mix and it achieves something of merit.
I found this a bit bland. Might just be me though.
nice record, didn't really grip me though
Plodder 2 stars
Let's see what k.d. is all about...oh wow, I knew I would recognize at least one of her songs. I remebmer seeing her name thrown around in the 90s. It was the very last track Constant Craving. One other song did catch my attention though, Still Thrives this Love?
She's fine. A bit morose and boring.
Per the Wiki article, k.d. lang DEFINITELY wrote this album to make a pass at Marlene Dietrich. If I wasn't at work stressing over deadlines and going to meetings, I could appreciate this album. I love her voice and how smooth all the tracks are. It's not a repeat listen for me but I'll think of it next time I'm drinking a paloma on my back porch this summer. 5/10
BOOOOORRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGGGGGG
trench coats and fedoras and gummy cigarettes
She can write a song. 'Save me' is a graceful mellow country pop nugget. But it's not my music and it doesn't sustain enough quality to keep me interested.
Yet another 100lbum listening experience that makes me wonder if I'm missing out on something here by not reading the book and also by not discovering the album during the time it came out. I think I already wondered whether a different k.d. lang album was transformative or something or if it was just, like, she was butch in the 90's and I remember liking that album more.
Not sure what there is to say about this album nothing really memorable on it just a record.
Meh not me favorite but
Musical wallpaper, a baselayer, vapid. Not a fan of her music at all 2/5
It was all right I suppose. Easy listening. Not something I'll listen to again.
Favorite songs: Save Me, Constant Craving
Just categorically not for me - generic singer song writer white people music with very little about it.
Very generic and forgettable.
Ok 2/5
Very mellow. Maybe a little too mellow for my tastes? I'm running into a problem with my reviewing where there are albums that I certainly don't /dislike/ but I would never listen to them on my own. And I definitely don't want to rate this below Coldplay (which I did not enjoy). It's just... a little Hallmark-y? k.d. lang has SUCH a gorgeous voice. but the songs themselves--is it horrible to say too much violin? I love a violin normally! there's just so much of it. Miss Chatelaine was great. I really liked the intro of "still thrives this love". Season of Hollow Soul is very vibey and I think my favorite on the album.
Beautiful voice, but OMG yawn.
Good album
..
Meh.
The vocals are gorgeous, that's for sure. Also, I really like Season of Hollow Soul. But otherwise, I am not feeling this one.
Nice voice
could've been worse
Lovely voice. Terribly boring album. Shadowlands was better in my opinion.
