Reviews (page 8 of 13)
First songs were good the others just gave me the feeling of being shouted at
sympa pr l’aspect historique, le reste c’est bof, fondateur cependant 3-/5
Take this review with a grain of salt as I was dozing in and out on the couch while listening to this. No clue how I was able to nap with the Beastie Boys playing in the background, but there you have it - I’m officially old. This was what I imagined it would be. Decent beats, some good samples, great rhymes (those I heard). It was a fun listen.
The Beastie Boys album that everybody waited for and then nobody wanted. “Critically acclaimed “ translated as “not very popular”, at least in this case. The rhymes are still on point but the ‘innovative’ samples and the listless meandering of topics don’t really hold up for me. Not a memorable track to speak of on this one. 2.5 but I’ll round up.
Good album, couple great songs that always get me bopping. The beats are amazing throughout, it has the feel of a Dust Brothers album with the Beasties rapping over them. Which it kinda is, and that's not a bad thing, but loses a bit of the Beastie edge as a result. Definately didn't need the 12 minute Bouillabaisse suite, that pushed the album into the too long category and brought it down to a 3.
its got a flow. made me giggle a few times. overall though after a while just feels like nails scratching on a chalkboard mixed with the feeling of being wildly hungover. like you have big sunglasses on trying to eat the most simple carb and drink electrolytes without vomiting. and like everything is too loud like not sound wise but like the sound just pierces too far into your skull. but then they would say some weird shit like "HHHhhHEEeeeEEEYYYyyyy LLLlAAAadddDDiiiieeeesssSS" and im like cool cool ok.
Probably another 3, but a high one. Never in danger of less; flirted with more. Shake Your Rump is an absolute banger.
Just enough about it in places to make a 3
Beastie Boysin toinen levy oli melko hyvä, vaikkakin pidän Ill Communicationista vielä paljon enemmän. Paul's Boutique on kestänyt aikaa yllättävän hyvin eikä tunnin kestokaan kauheasti vaivannut. Sampleja löytyy Beatlesista Psykoon.
Beastie Boys shouting tone can get a bit tiresome at times Fave track: Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun
Viewed as a classic. It shouldn’t be. 2.5/5
I only kinda get the charm here, not my kind of music
#39 You can tell these guys had a lot of fun making this album. Lots and lots of samples used throughout. Maybe a little too long, it starts to sound a bit repetitive after a while. I could see myself re-visiting at some point.
Twas alright, went on too long for me
2,8/5
Honestly better than I thought after all the memes but still really odd and just a rip of black culture.
I liked about half of this album. The Beasties have never been accused of having voices that could read a phone book, and that simple fact grated on me quite a bit. It's not even the yelling for me, it's more of the strident, snot-nosed delivery of essentially every bar. This is admittedly an album of party music, and the more upbeat numbers keep the energy high and consistent. The more mid-tempo tracks on here are absolutely grating to me, especially "High Plains Drifter;" I felt every second of those 4 minutes. All that aside I can definitely see how this album is considered so essential, being that it sampled a little bit of everything from everywhere and introduced that approach to broader hip-hop as a result. To my ears, listening to this 35 plus years after its initial release, this album strikes me as a standout release that came out during the most fruitful years of hip hop's evolution. These days, its influence casts wide, but the album has aged a fair bit. Key Tracks: Shake Your Rump, Hey Ladies, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun, B-Boy Bouillabaisse (some releases separate each movement, others group them as a single 12 minute track)
so many beatle samples in sound of science bit repetitive but also experimental good genre good representation
Would not buy
I don't listen to hip hop. Can't be mad at movie samples tho.
The Beastie Boy’s mature, but not that much
This doesn’t hold up as well as I thought it would. It’s whiny. I still respect it a lot, but it’s funny how it didn’t hold up or maybe I didn’t hold up.
Didn’t need to be 53 minutes
Way before its time but not for me
Not bad but License to I'll is all you really need to know about the Beastie Boys.
Love the mix of media in the songs. Killer use of samples. Vocals get a little obnoxious at times but this album is a party.
I enjoyed this album more than I expected, especially considering that hip-hop is not usually my genre. While I could appreciate the creativity and dense sampling throughout the record, only Shake Your Rump stood out to me. Its driving groove and bass line were easily the highlight of the album.
A fun listen … I enjoyed the sampling throughout. 3
(4/7) some of this is fun
No conocía a la banda, no era lo que esperaba. Me gustó:)
Liked it but was expecting to like it more, only saved one song
Ik hoor wel dat t vet is, maar niet mijn smaak
The energy was great and the samples were really fun, but I sadly just wasn't that into it. Favorite Songs: Shake your Rump, Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun
The best Beatles album
This was good fun and some of the lyrics made me smile, but this is not a genre I get on with. I find this difficult to rate, I want to give this a 2, but I enjoyed this more than most of its type, but I wouldn't listen to this again.
They have such an ear for hooks, making music with samples only. It’s often catchy and funny and energetic
Pretty fun listen, good catchy beats. I was starting to get a bit tired of it by the end, but it was still pretty good overall.
mm un 3. No es tanto mi onda pero es un buen album
enjoyed the newschool : oldschool
trop bien
My second from the Beastie Boys- this one an earlier work. It had a lot of elements of early hip hop that worked- funky rhythms, clever lyricism, attitude. I think it established the Beastie Boys as true hip hop artists. On the otherhand, the songs fealt less varied than later albums. Still enjoyable- just a little "same-y". Overall- solid album
Instrumentally I think this is a step up from Licensed to Ill. But delivery and lyrically it’s very consistent and does get tiring song after song. Likes: Egg Man; Car Thief; Shadrach
Not my fav

Dinámico vibrante buen disco
I've tried so hard and got so far, in the end, it doesn't even matter to me. 3 stars
Not bad - more of the same from The Biys, I think.
Obviously a work of art and potentially even a Hip Hop masterpiece, with the most sophisticated use of sampling to exist when it came out. But too be honest I prefer other eras if the BBs. Lyrically they were still a bit immature here and I miss their live instruments on this record.
For how good BB are in general, the overall album was actually pretty average. Some great songs in this, but the rest are fine at best
So this is where they got the Minecraft villager sound
Fun stuff
Mejor que el otro que escuché. La segunda parte es bastante interesante.
Liked it
A far cry better than License To Ill (in my opinion), but not quite at their peek yet. For me, I'd take any of their next 3 albums over this one. 3 1/2 stars
I like the Beastie Boys, but this album feels a bit too niche.
Not sure how their sound evolved drastically enough between albums to warrant multiple appearances on this list, but still a lot of fun.
I get it. This is the OG Kanye. Crazy production, even if the lyrics are irrelevant. I don't like it but I respect it. Can't give it a 2 in good conscience, so 3 it is! - First Beastie Boys, no idea what to expect. - Wack intro, lets see... - Wait it's rap? - Is this a joke? This is garbage - Okay it's stabilizing but the lyrics still suck - The less produced songs really show off the weakness of the lyricism... Those are easy skips
Fuld energi
I was not in the mood to listen to the Beastie Boys this morning, but the beats are so infectious that I was bopping along almost immediately. This album is a little inconsistent, though. There are some standout tracks and really awesome use of samples, but some other songs that drag. Overall, I prefer Ill Communication. Also, there’s a lot of casual misogyny and homophobia because it was the 80’s, but the fact that they apologized and more importantly changed their behavior makes a huge difference.
Hip hop is my least favorite genre covered in this list, and the Beastie Boys in particular grate with their whiny delivery. But if "License to Ill" was the poster child of all that is irritating about the band and genre, Paul's Boutique does represent something of a redemption. While it can be overlong and samey, the collection of creative samples and turns of lyrical phrase make it a massive advance and fun exploratory experience in moments.
Meh.
This is a fun introduction to the Beastie Boys. The refrains in ‘Johnny Ryall’ and ‘Egg Man’ are quite silly and I guess encapsulates the humour the band brought forth. Brimming with the 80’s era NYC Rating: 3.8/5 GEMV (22.04.2026)
like "ill communication" the best part of this album is the samples.
Goofy ass guys….. idk if i love it or hate it….
Usually really like Beastie Boys but this album overall was a bit too much for me. I'm aware that's a stupid criticism but each to their own. Still enjoyed it tho. Shake Your Rump was my fav song and first listen. Johnny Ryall and Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun were my other highlights
great beats but i didn't like the vocal delivery
It's decent
Everyone loves them, so it feels like I should too. But tbh, while there's a few bangers, their vocals and writing seem terrible to me.
Kinda fun but it gets samey and repetitive.
I can acknowledge that hip hop was not the best in the 80s, and by all accounts this is likely a good showing for the style of the time. I can also acknowledge this group's effective music knowledge in their sample. That being said, it just doesn't resonate for me. The lyrics fall flat. It's def a fun album but if I'm looking for pre-90s rap, this one wouldn't be one I'd come back to. There's talent there though Highlights: Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun, Shadrach
fine. full album is a bit much.
not really my favourite or most familiar genre. Some songs were very catchy, but i need to listen to them more to really understand the idea
First time listening to this group who I think are like a hip hop NSYNC. I can see that was the concern of others at that time. I do get how influential they were and how many people grew up with this band in their background, and while I quite liked the Beck style production and energy, I found it too repetitive and ultimately not for me.
It’s great, but strangely one of my least favorite Beastie records.
Dober
Probably objectively good, but in all honesty, not my type of music.
Good.
Pretty fun listen
Decent enough for this kind of thing feels a bit dated these days, but quite enjoyed
I already knew the beastie boys, but much like the wu tang clan I never got around to listening to a full album. To all the girls almost felt out of character, but it was a beautiful intro to the rest of the album. Johnny Ryall was catchy and felt timeless! the entire album would sound good both for day to day life and for a movie. High plains drifter got annoying after the first minute lol I couldn't keep listening, same with the sounds of science and it's too bad cause at minute two it gets good. Overall the highs of this album are HIGH, and the lows are LOWS. The lyrics aren't meant to be taken seriously so it's a fun album to dance to and sing along without thinking too much. What the fuck is the TWELVE. MINUTES. SONG. oh my god
Det er ikke lige sådan rigtig min genre, men jeg kan sagtens sætte mig ind i at hvorfor dette album for mange er top.
*68 Ikke helt på niveau med Ill Communication, men stadig en solid slasker. Hvis The Sound of Science er the sound of science, så kan jeg ikke lide the sound of science :/
beastie boys har altid været sick men silly 3.2
Not my favourite style, but I enjoyed the hip hop vibes for a few songs
I didn't particularly like or positively review Licence To Ill, so here's Beastie Boys second album for me to worry over. It's an improvement. Theres a higher production value, it's cleverly packed with a range of interesting and wide ranging samples, from The Beatles to Johnny Cash. Due to this, Shake Your Rump and Egg Man are favourites of mine - I'm loving the Jaws section at the end. However, while I appreciate the album's sense of humour, there's not too much development from the frat boy rapping of Licence to Ill. As good as Egg Man sounds, it's still just a track about throwing eggs at people. There is more meaningful work at other points, like The Sounds Of Science and parts of the Bouillabaise are interesting, but I'm still not seeing what the fuss was all about with the Beastie Boys. A middling 3 stars.
I prefer later albums, but still good.
honestly I think this and ill communication suffered from getting them within like two days of each other
whats better than this just guys being dudes
3/21 Old school hip-hop. Its okay
I think I simply need to listen to this a few more times to really appreciate it, as I didn't particularly like it; probably because I'm not used to listen to much Hip Hop music. But I can hear substance in here: there's a lot of variety, great sampling and good beats. And a lot of creativity. So for now a 3/5, but I'm sure this could easily be a 4/5 if I give it another chance and finally get a bit more into Hip Hop.
Not my favorites album of theirs but still solid
I didn't enjoy this as much as the others, just felt simpler and less Beastie.
This was just okay. I feel like something has happened because every time I listen to music I can only evaluate it as average, neither enjoyable or unenjoyable. So this rating might be a reflection of how I feel rather than the music itself. I just don't know how to feel but I don't think this was bad
First half of this album slapped but the B-Boy Bouillabaisse stuff not so much which is a shame because I really like the Beastie Boys. Took it upon myself to do a bit of looking into this and apparently Bouillabaisse refers to 'a humble fisherman's stew made from bony rockfish they couldn't sell' and so I guess these songs were merely a jumble of ideas they couldn't quite put together into their own album and so were dumped on the end of this one - disappointing.
I felt myself bobbing along to the beat mor often than probably necessary. I didn't really like the 'Boy Bouillabaisse' section but you can't win them all
Not nearly as good as ill Communication but still a cool record. Felt the production was a bit weaker on some songs while there are some pretty solid ones too.
Not bad but not great either
I liked this, but not as much as Licensed To Ill. I consider that one a classic. I can say that I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed Ill Communication. Maybe just a bit less but it's still a 3.
First time I've listened to this much Beastie Boys and the longer I listened the less I liked them. It all started to sound same same and I got bored after a while.
I've listened to 5 or 6 hip-hop albums in this project. This is the one I enjoyed the most. It's definitely 3 stars at least (and pretty close to 4 stars).
Hm, nowadays this record sounds like the parody of itself. It was top notch when it came out, but I fear it did not age very well. I get some Lonely Island vibes here and there. :D Fav: Looking down the barrel of a gun
y'all mind if some goofy white boys get a little funky with it? the sampling is *really* interesting here in a way that feels drastically ahead of its time and i enjoy how the three of them bounce off each other, but at the same time every song sounds the same. the delivery across every track is identical such that it all broadly blurs together. i find it a bit exhausting. i can see why someone would like this, though not really as a full album. the flow is so samey that i feel like you could cut any of these tracks together and the listener would be none the wiser. fun in bursts, at least.
I like some beastie boys songs, but by god there's a difference between listening to the songs and sitting through a straight album. I feel like in an album format all their weaknesses show. The very similar flow from song to song undercuts the actually pretty interesting sampling and as a result I feel like you can listen to a few of their best songs and get a complete picture. I've always felt a bit bewildered as someone who is generally a fan of most rap music and styles that Beastie Boys is one I only get in small doses when they're so acclaimed, and I can see spots where they shine with their lyricism and their attitude carries things nicely. It just doesn't quite cohere together in an album to me in the way I like.
Entertaining for a few songs but gets a bit annoying/played out the longer I listen to these guys
Do you think some hip hop heads look at each other and said, these white Boyz need some lessons in rap and funk, production goes through the roof, rap is tighter, cowbell, dust brothers, duelling banjos nod
O álbum é bom. Tem batidas e grooves que são bem divertidos. QoA Cloudscape.
Beastie af
It’s a Beastie Boys album, and it delivers the energy and style you expect. The problem is that any impact from the brash beats and vocals is lost through hearing so much of a similar offering throughout the album. It’s got a cool hip hop funky vibe which is quite nice but it mostly blurs for me.
This is a cool blend of hip-hop and funk with electronic sampling, giving it a cool and fresh vibe. There are plenty of interesting sounds throughout the album, even if it does put me in mind of some overly trendy bar or café music. That being said, I get a bit bored of the one dimensional, call and response flows that characterise the rapping all the way through. It's also guilty of the usual sin of hip-hop albums in being needlessly long. The second half of the album had lost it's charm and floated me by in a sort of sludge of samples. This is some interesting early hip-hop but not the pinnacle of the genre for me.
Didn't like the vocals too much, but the sampling was brilliant.
Definitely not my favorite Beastie Boys project. It sounds like they were having fun for sure, but I'm not sure if I'd choose this project if I wanted to listen to Beastie Boys. 3/5
Mais legal do que eu imaginei, mas esqueci todas as músicas assim que acabou. Talvez seja uma barreira de idioma.
Most of the album is a re-hash of their previous releases, as if the Boys are just teens that could never grow up. But the last track, "B-Boy Bouillabaisse", a rap medley of sorts, shows signs of personal growth as artists.
To All the Girls 2/5 Shake Your Rump 4/5 Johnny Ryall 3/5 Egg Man 3/5 High Plains Drifter 3/5 The Sound Of Science 3/5 3-Minute Rule 3/5 Hey Ladies 4/5 5-Piece Chicken Dinner 2/5 Looking Down the Barrel of A Gun 3/5 What Comes Around 3/5 Shadrach 4/5 Ask for Janice 2/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: 59 Chrystie Street 2/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: Get on the Mic 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: Stop That Train 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: A Year And A Day 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: Dropping Names 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: Lay It On Me 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: Mike on the Mic 3/5 B-Boy Bouillabaisse: A.W.O.L 3/5
Neutral. Not bad but did not touch me at all.
An interesting dive in both hip hop and sampling. I always dig Beastie Boys' call and response style vocals but in this album I also enjoyed their production and technique in sampling. I do feel like B-Boy Bouillabaisse could have been all one song instead of split up. 6.5/10. Favorite Song: High Plains Drifter
idk i'm suffering from beastie boys fatigue
Opening track is icky AF, but fine, I guess this album is nearly 40 years old. And boy, can you tell from the simplistic rhyme schemes and grandad-esque flow patterns. Production is great though, and really is what makes this a classic (although some of the lyrical schemes are pretty good tbf). But I still can't stand the monosyllabic rhyming and stilted flows in 80s hip-hop. I can almost deal with it here because the beats are so expertly crafted. But as much as I wanna give it a 4 for creativity and execution, the prehistoric flows will stop me returning to this, or any other Beastie Boys albums, unfortunately.
While I respect that others like this album, this is perhaps one of my least favorite Beastie Boys albums. I've given the album multiple chances over the years and it just doesn't appeal to me. I preferred the rock samples of LICENSED TO ILL to the more psychedelia and schizophrenic sample choices on PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. While some others claim that the lyrics on PB are less puerile and better written, I find them just as puerile with stuff like "Egg Man", "High Plains Drifter", and "3-Minute Rule" among many others being just as cringe as the worst hip hop out there in 1989. And while PB is only 9 minutes longer than LTI, it drags for me, making the feel like it is 20 or 30 minutes longer than it needs to be. Fortunately lyrics are not of the foremost importance to me when judging music, so that wasn't a deal breaker. What was a deal breaker, was just not feeling the grip of the bangers or the fun on this album that everyone else claims to feel. There is no denying that this album was a foundational album for not only hip hop, but also for alternative rock artists who would take these ideas and expand on them in rock, pop, and folk directions (see Beck's MELLOWGOLD). The most bearable tracks for me were "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" and "Shadrach". Even though honestly I sort loathe the lyrics to both of them, the use of the instrument samples and beats made up for them. Honestly, I feel like their lyrics never matured really until ILL COMMUNICATION. The first half is better than the second half. The album really tanks with the awful Bouillabaisse suite. While I have songs I enjoy off of every other Beastie Boys album this one doesn't any tracks that I feel compelled to add to my collection no matter how many times I come back to it. I kind of wish they had figured out how to do something more than shout rapping on this album. I think a mix of occasional refrains of different types of singing mixed in with raps that occasionally expressed some dynamics levels other than just shouting could have really elevated some of these tracks to even more interesting places. Also, I feel like all of hip hop would benefit from a less lyrics is more approach. That many lyrics and the voices on hip hop albums just become white noise.
Thank you Beastie Boys for saving my life amidst a dreary folk rock weekend. Thank you!!!!
Got me break dancing to New-Yorker white boys singing brags (*shouts*)
Gostei mais do outro álbum deles (III Communication). Não quer dizer que este seja mau, mas é mediano. Especialmente comparando ao que ouvi anteriormente.
I do like the beastie boys, but found the album a little repetative
Not a bad album but def doesn’t have the hit factor of the previous one
This should have been titled "A Tale of Two Albums." The rapping is boring and only at points funny but doesn't hold up to the test of time; The production is some of the best I've ever heard, sampling at it's finest, and has made me want to relisten to so many of the tracks that inspired the Dust Brothers. And in the middle of these two sides, one boring and not as entertaining as I need it to be, the other this monolith to what sampling can do, is Paul's Boutique: Iconic, unforgettable, dull, and past it's prime. And as such, it's hard to rate the album because, well what do you give prescience to? The parts that work, or the parts that don't? As a result I have to say that the album is good, but not great. While sometimes the rapping works and the lyrics are funny, too any times they either become unfunny or just plain boring. The production is fantastic though, and we'll worth a listen just for that. There is a reason that people consider this the best Beastie Boys album. But there is also a reason none of the songs on the album are classics in the same vain as many of their others. Highlights are Johnny Ryall, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun, and A Year and a Half from the ending Bouillabaisse.
They are shouting, but in a good way
I understand the “they’re just shouting” reviews. They certainly aren’t singing. But I can appreciate this for what it is.
I enjoyed it. Really good for 80s hip hop, but the genre has come a long way since then.

The Beastie Boys are so funny to me. They're over here screaming into the microphone and then you look at a picture of them and they look like they're insurance salesmen or something. I love these guys. they are my neighbor's teen son's garage band. I would definitely buy a homemade t-shirt.
As much as I have tried to give Paul's Boutique a chance, I hate to say it but this album does feel very dated much like many of the other Hip Hop albums from the 80s. I appreciate how much fun this album has with itself, but I feel it gets very lost in the feelings it presents instead of making a coherent Hip Hop album. I am more impressed by the shear amount of sampling on display here with this album than I am with the album itself as Paul's Boutique in context of the entire history of music is a remarkably important release. For those unaware, this album is the reason we have to get permission to sample music thanks to the fucking Eagles of all bands. A lot of my favorite tracks from this album are still the ones that I enjoyed the first time around like the impeccable Shadrach, Shake Your Rump, and Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun. Even with that being said this album really lacks any sort of solid and consistent substance to really keep me attached and instead throws me around for 53 minutes trying to give me a taste of what the new and refreshing world of sampling can be like. I appreciate this album for more of what it showed the world Hip Hop could be and the repercussions of this album's release more than the music itself. Like many other 80s Hip Hop albums, it is a staple of its' time and not one I think holds up very well in today's landscape....
7/10
no soy fan del estilo musical de los beastie boys
The production on this album is amazing. The sample selection and execution of bringing new life into these samples is amazing. As for the rapping it's fine. I have never been much of a fan of the Beastie Boys cause I find the delivery of their vocals off-putting, but I recognize the talent they have. There is just something about it that my ears don't like that I can't quite place. That was toned down some on this album, but not enough for me to have this in rotation.
Cool!
I've heard several of their songs before, and I do I like the Beastie Boys sound. But they're great in small doses. I don't think I can take a whole album of it. And this album had the Beastie sound I love for a lot of the songs, but there was just something missing. Shake Your Rump was pretty good, Johnny Ryall was fun. High Plains Drifter was very good, the back and forth raps that the Beasties are known for are on full display here. The Sounds Of Science was a lot of fun, pretty funny with the science-y stuff. Hey Ladies was great too. Car Theif and Shadrach were nice as well. If they cut the album off right there, it would have been a solid 4. But the rest of the album, the whole B-Boy Bouillabaisse part, is just kinda eh. And it drives the album length up much more than it needed to be. Overall there is some fun to be had, but it could have been better. Best song: The Sounds Of Science
Mixture of sounds and tastes. Reminds a little bit of Can with experimental touch, but with the add of world music. I can see where Tom Tom Club got their sound, but here we have more flavours and more adventurous approach.
🥇shake your rump 🥈egg man 🥉b-boy bouillabaisse: stop that train HM: johnny ryall, high plains drifter, hey ladies, what comes around, shadrach, b-boy bouillabaisse: a year and a day
🙂
Experimental, different, way ahead of its time.
a fun album, thought a lot of the samples here were very cool
Beastie Boys are always a fun listen even if every song isn’t a banger.
I'm afraid I had this on in the background while working, so it didn't get my full attention. No tracks leapt out at me, but I may come back to it some time.
not quite my style but cool
I really like the samples, but the vocal style is not really my bag I was going with 2 stars until 5-Piece Chicken Diner came on - I'll go up to 3 stars because of that madness!
# Album Name: Pauls Boutique # Artist: Beastie Boys # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: First half isnt bad. Few good tracks but then the second half kic ks in and tanks the album. # Top Tunes: Shake your rump / Egg man / Sound of silence # Would I listen to it again? No, just a few tracks
I hadn’t heard this Beastie Boys album before. I love the energy Beastie Boys bring. The lyrical witticisms are great. I feel like this is an album that would grow on me the more I listened to it, but on a first listen I felt it was a bit long and tonally one-note. 3.5/5
I recognize the impact the BB had on hip hop, and I love Hello Nasty, but could never get into this fratty album.
the kind of attitude that packs a punch. the samples carried.
I love shake your rump and you have to respect a 12 minute melody of just random bits of songs mashed together but overall not quite the same impact as licence to ill.
Chaotic fun. It's not my personal favourite beastie boys. There are some excellent lyrics and jokes and an awesome raw energy. It's very rough around the edges though. The overall sound is kind of chaotic. There are fewer clear hooks and distinctive beats. It's really good, but just a bit harder to get a hold of
7/10
Not really my thing but cool none the less.
Good samples! I didn’t know any songs on here except for the part of Hey Ladies where they say Hey Ladies. I like the Beastie Boys. I think they have clever lyrics.
Anxiety inducing, these boys just won’t shut the hell up! Decent. But not my fav
It was fun and the beastie boys are iconic and so influential on hip hop and culture (hello, hamilton!) but none of the songs really grabbed my attention. Admittedly I was mostly listening to this as background music while I worked, but everything seemed to blend toogether. I want to give this one another try with a more-dedicated listen but for now it's a three.
I can see why they have such an iconic sound, and they’ve been sampled soo much in modern music. But if I’m Honest…2 beastie boys songs is about enough for me in one sitting.
This album didn’t do anything for me. Some good lines. The beats didn’t grab me and the vocals are energetic, but reminded me of a more nasally RATM or Morty from Rick and Morty.
it's very unique in it's style. it's not really my thing but it isn't bad
Classic Beastie Boys. Not my go to listen, but a slice of life
I've always found these guys tough to listen to for more than a song or two and this album is no exception. This has some really good samples but the shout rap thing stops being interesting very quickly.
Boldly going where they had gone with their first album, but without the hits. If you like the BB you’ll like this too.
For what it is, it's good. Wouldn't choose to listen to it
appreciate getting to know their music
It was groovy. But it isn’t something I’d go out of my way to listen to.
Loud and punkish. Beastie boys was fun while not lyrically setting the world on fire. Enjoyed this
Pretty fun, not many similar groups like the Beastie Boys
The sampling is still banging (a 'sampling' for me: the piano in 'What Comes Around'; the bass-line syncopation in 'Dropping Names'; random bluegrass, Johnny Cash) and if the voices take some getting used to, the seasoned interplay between them is obvious--with those loud and proud NYC accents. It feels like they threw everything and anything that came to mind at their tracks and lyrics, and found many surprising combinations that worked (and, of course, some that didn't.) One more appreciation: this kind of style and musical approach was adopted by at least one more group of pioneering artists very far away: Kpop 1.0.
This whole thing was giving Hamilton and I couldn't figure out why until I saw a picture of the Beastie Boys. It was fun, but the theatricality of their annunciation read like off-off-broadway, so things made sense once I found out they were from New York. Lin Manuel-Miranda, give the kids credit for your sound!!! Liked the beats, enjoyed the playfulness of the whole thing, appreciated some of the songs (Johnny Ryall, The Sound of Science). However, there were times the whole thing felt a bit manic and inconsistent. Couldn't find ways it contributed to the album overall, though I had points in pretty much every song I really enjoyed. woke up around 7am and immediately got onto listening to the record. it took me a couple of listens for the first few tracks before it starts to register in my sleepy brain. i must say, its a very fun and enjoyable album to listen to. love me a good cowbell always. when i heard high plains drifter, i am reminded of rage against the machine, which makes sense because beasties heavily influenced ratm sound, particularly i heard it in the way one of the beastie boys rap in a whine-y and high tone at the end of his lines, i remember a rage track with a similar style, it's cool. listening to older records makes me appreciate how art will inspire creation of new art, it's a wonderful cycle. i think it's one of the things that i will always find fascinating.
Nie czuję tej muzy niestety. Ale sprawdzę pozostałe albumy grupy. :-)
Not really my style, I’ve heard a couple of songs by them and I didn’t really like them as much as other people do, it’s just to much screaming with some cool beats beneath, but now I had the chance to read and pay attention to the lyrics and I can appreciate some songs for what they are saying.
Don’t mind it, I like the sound of music from this era.
Interesting mix and variety of samples used in this album. Really broadcasts the music genres popular at that time. Beastie Boys are always a fun listen to, this album would probably be better on a 2nd listen
Some of my all time favorite Beastie's tunes, but more filler nonsense songs than I remembered. Still a super fun listen.
Liked the music, questionable lyrics in parts.
Licenced to Ill on edelleen suosikkini. Eipä oo tullut hittibiisejä lukuunottamatta muuta tuotantoa kuunneltua. Tämäkään ei oikein pudonnut.
I enjoyed this album all the way through. the songs i do like are shake your rump, egg man, high plains drifter, the sounds of science, 2-minute rule, and hey ladies. the music had me hooked but i also feel like they sound the same so all the songs blend together in my head. overall, not bad.
chaotic vocals, felt the urge to skip a few tracks, but after a couple of listens it started to grow on me. high energy!
Has a pastiche effect, some of it successful, though some parts also just feel a little betwixt and between.
- un album éclecctique et expérimental mais avec des prods qui s’écoutent généralement assez bien malgré le poids des paroles - je réécouterais certaines chansons mais pas nécessairement l’album complet - meilleure chanson: 3 minute rule
Famous album largely due to how much it sampled. Good to have on the list.
An interesting album. It really felt like a well rounded album. Cohesive, yet diverse. The Dust Brothers seem to be responsible for the best parts of it. The Beastie Boys bring a fun energy, but their lyricism didn't live up to the hype.
the ogs, i guess Would I listen again? No Deserves to be on this list? Yes 3.4
This album seems like it might have been an important milestone for popular music as a very accessible hip hop sound. I'd be interested to know the assessment of people who are really knowledgeable about the 21st century music that shares roots with the Beastie Boys. Were they important or just pop? I'm pretty clueless on this so just taking this album at face value - of its time and a fun sound.
Mkay
Some bangers but it all started sounding the same towards the end of the album
6/10
I can’t do the Beastie Boys, they just grate on me too much. Everything on this album slaps except for the Beastie Boys rapping, it does my head in.
Pretty much all of the Beatie Boys sounds the same
Definitely is good background music. Not really my vibe though.
Do love the bb
Cool, not sure I am a massive fan of the whine voice however, but funky beat and first couple tracks are super cool
since this is their second album, i first listened to License to Ill since i’ve never listened to any beastie boys album in full and only really know the big hits. my immediate impression is that the production on this one is way better. there’s more variety for sure, and for the most part it just sounds better. Egg Man is a favorite so far, the lyrics are silly but the jaws and psycho sampling is so cool especially at the end when they get layered on top of each other. - sorry the random fiddle interlude??? - overall, a fun album, but there is A Lot happening the whole time and not always in the most interesting way. i liked Egg Man and Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun a lot, but by the time it got to the medley at the end i was kinda over the whole thing.
Kaxigheten, kreativiteten! Så lökigt och coolt samtidigt! Skulle vilja ge den ett tredje varv och bara sitta med texterna. Älskar The End-sampeln!
Referensfest!
Album #12: Paul’s Boutique - Beastie Boys Genre (according to Wikipedia): Hip-hop, sampledelia Singles?: Hey Ladies, Shadrach Have you heard any songs from this album or group before?: I have heard this album once before. Thoughts?: I like the production a lot, I’m a big fan of sampledelia, but I’m not a fan of the lyrics so much. I’m sorry if I am a disappointment for not liking hip-hop too much, especially with the lyrics. Sometimes I wonder if I need to just bite my tongue and deal with it. Anyways, I love hip-hop productions. The delivery doesn’t bother me, I just feel like rapping is more like poetry than a type of live singing. It could just be me though. Favorite songs: Shake Your Rump, Egg Man, Hey Ladies, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun* As a writer, what would you use this album for honing your craft?: If I had to, the sampledelia would inspire me to write city types of scenes. Scenes in cities. No file correlations.
My opinion on the beastie boys remains the same, the sound is fine. The rapping just is not for me, I get it pioneers of white rap, but like what does that mean?
Not the hangover album I needed. Lots of screaming on great samples, but it sounds too alike, and in the end felt like my stomach
Another one I hadn’t fully listened to before despite knowing a few tracks. Rap isnt my favorite genre but this is … not just rap. It’s innovative and funny and rock and the samples… it’s a blast to listen to. Doing 3 stars only because it’s not my favorite genre and I know there will be a lot more albums to come. Will it be in my regular rotation? No. Am I glad I know it? Yes.
At first I thought this was just not for me, but it ended up winning me over. I will need to come back. This must be The Lonely Island’s biggest inspiration. Also, very cool to hear some Beatles in The Sounds of Science.
Decent but not for me
I got their debut album a week ago, so I got a little burnt out whilst listening to this one around halfway through. I don't think it's as strong an album as that one anyway, but it's still decent.
good individually but repetitive overall
Not their best work
This, in general, was less enjoyable for me than the previous Beastie Boys album the album generator gave us, and I'm not sure why. I did enjoy playing spot the sample again, with 5-Piece Dinner being one of the most random examples of that: Shucking The Corn from the Deliverance soundtrack? Sure, why not. Plus The Beatles, The Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Chic... But overall, I liked Ill Communication much more. The vocals, which have always been whiny-shouty didn't annoy me there, but I found them grating on this album. This feels like a 2.5 but I'm going to round up because I enjoyed the sampling.
Saved Tracks: Hey Ladies, What Comes Around 2.5*
I'd give the album a 5 or 6...good energy, some hilarious lyrics, chill at times and some killer grooves too. Highlights: Shave Your Rump, Egg Man was my favorite...loved the energy and vibe also found the chorus production really cool! High Plain Drifters was chill but gets the head nod going. Loved how heavy Looking Down the Barrel is, awesome guutar line and a great transition into Car Thief. Overall an easy listen, didn't feel much need to skip songs which is always a good sign.
Hip Hop is not my genre but .... the rhymes and references in some of these tracks are genius. I have to give kudos to FindLyrics for allowing me to read along, to fully understand what I was hearing. The classic cultural references pulled into thoughtful (though shouted) poetry makes me wonder how in the world these men string together such lines and rhymes. Am I a convert to hip hop, nope! Did I enjoy this one example? yep! Listened before? N Saved some tracks? N Favorite tracks? High Plains Drifter ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it, saved no tracks
This is iconic beastie boys. old school hip hop. Not really my favorite but it's iconic.
Way better than I always expect it to be. This might rise to the level of a new guilty pleasure.
This was never going to be a favourite but it’s not as bad as I expected.
Just not a beastie boys gal. Some gems in there but not something I ever seek out.
Not their best
Shout out to Taskforce
It seems like quite inventive hip-hop. But I was still bored. There weren't enough tunes. The best moment of the album is the sample of a Beatles song.
Fun. Very Tarantino-esque. Is that a thing?
Fun
My least favourite Beastie Boys so far. I like a couple of songs but this one did not do it for me, unlike some of the others.
az előző jobb volt tőlük
one of the boys better outings
There's some absolute bangers on here, particularly High Plains Drifter and Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun. But however inventive and adventurous the boys' sampling might be, hip-hop of this era has a tendency to sound rather "flat" to me, lacking the richer and more melodic basslines and samples that evolved later in the genre.
it’s a vibe. not something i’d choose to listen to but i appreciate the history
As far as hip-hop goes, BB are probably still on of the best instrumentalny speaking. Diverese sounds, great rythm, keeps your attention all the time. Vocals are possibly little scuffed on the mix in this album, sometimes hard to comprehend the lyrics. The words themselves are hard to fully grasp and appreciate after one listens, but them seemd fine, funny. Decent album, one I probably won't be returning to much, maybe missing some of the cool factor of the most known BB songs.
its the all time ballad
On track 5 now, High Plains Drifter. Musically, I like this album a lot but the old school hip hop lyrical delivery hasn't aged well in my opinion. Overall, it is a decent record but I'm still not a big fan of old school hip hop.
I’m not big on these guys, but I liked this one better than the last one I heard.
Beastie boys at 0800? Yes please
Was a good album. Nice introduction to old-school rap
Not my kind of music, but I can still hear that it is well made
132/1001 Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ I do appreciate the use of samples that make this a much more compelling listen than the delivery of the vocals. This is the second Beastie's album for me so far on this challenge and (sorry) I'm just a bit underwhelmed...
Was a good time, funky choices were made I liked the science one and with the backup singer
slay, not my thing though
Style rap rock je kiff bien notamment 2 sons
Not exactly my cup of tea, but endurable anyway
Pretty sick samples and beats. Content and rapping is eh. It is growing on me, but I don’t think it deserves a 4 yet
Enjoyed the music and samples but not the style of vocal delivery. Got better at the end with the Bouillabaisse section though - quite liked that.
Tidlig.
Not as polished as they eventually became, but their defining style is definitively there!
não é para mim :/
I greatly enjoyed the B-Boy Bouillabaisse section - innovative sampling and clear lyrics. The rest was much of a muchness. A lot of the choruses are the same few words shouted in different tones. As much as I liked the latter half, I can't give more than a 3.
Always partial to this white boy rap. Not my favorite album by the Boys, but still listenable.
Good fun, not my cup of tea
Man these guys just never fully did it for me. I can take them in small doses, just not one of my faves.
Always solid. Felt like this one was missing that big standout hit (or hits) like most of the other albums have. Think I enjoy that license to Ill more than this.
I get this is the critics' pick for the Beastie Boys' best album...but it never really hit for me. Some good stuff, just not great IMO. I'm a simple man: give me License to Ill and I am happy. 3.25/5
With every Beastie album I hear, it makes me think about how fresh and unique it must have sounded at the time. Their samples are unparalleled.
Good old hiphop. For my Taste it bit to Mixed.
Hip-Hop Basics
pa okej. bolje od prvog, ništa posebno. meni dosta podnošljivije i zabavnije od većine repa, al ne bih slušo
Good beats but I just can’t stand the vocal
This album will have you stop in the middle of a shift to look up how mangoes Jamaica exports annually. It's the joint. 3.5
I listened to it, I wasn’t against it, I remember little of it now.
Shout NYC hip hop. That's not a criticism it's an observation. I like the Beasties I like MCAs squeaky yeahhh boi style of rapping. I also think it marries well with Mike D low tones. The samples are great on here it's no License to I'll or Hello Nasty and not as polished as 5 boroughs but it has a gritty rough appeal it's likeable but it does grate at times. As it is soon raw.
Would be fun to listen to in a group or party setting, but not my jam just chilling on a Thursday afternoon
Album 930 of 1089 Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (1989) Rating : 2.5 / 5 I really wanted to enjoy this one more than I did, but it just didn’t grab me. I know it’s highly regarded and often praised for its production and dense sampling, but for me, it lands squarely in the “meh” category. It’s not bad by any stretch - just not something that connects with me. If their style and approach are your thing, I can absolutely see how this would hit the mark. The energy and creativity are there, and there’s no denying the effort that went into it. But compared to some of their other work, it feels a bit overstuffed and scattered. It’s one of those albums I respect more than I actually enjoy.
yay beastie boys liked a lot!!
Not my favorite type of music but it holds up
Good but weird
not as good as later beastie albums but I get why it's historically important
Classic and nostalgic
7.3
Of all the Beastie Boys albums, why this one? It’s ok. They did make much better albums later in their career.
Not as good as Licensed to Ill. Still good.
Got me boppin'.
Preferred the front half of the album, but liked the backing tracks throughout. Fun nods to other artists including an Abbey Road guitar riff on one track
I enjoyed this.
I can understand why this album is on a list like this. Having said that, meh. I usually like these guys but I don’t think this album is going to be in my collection any time soon, if ever. Repetitive. Fairly boring.
Bit too repetitive for me
Innovative and unique. Not necessarily great but quite impressive
The vocals are too strident strident and one note. it gets irritating, my god. Great production and use of samples. Tbh when the samples came on I found myself wanting to hear the original track. 2.5
7/10
First great album from the trio. Shadrach still hasn't dated and is still great on a good pair of headphones! Later albums would provide better songs, more humour and deeper meaning. However this is a lot of fun and a good place to start your journey.
Fun album.
Great samples, great production.
I know this album helped generate how hip hop advanced. I respect the artists. However, for me personally, none of the music speaks to me.
Didn't captivate me but would listen again. All sounded pretty similar so I didn't really have a favourite.
Not my favourite Beastie Boys album. The samples are as clever as ever but the vocals are particularly one note on this one.
It’s very fun and I was happy to take the ride. It did all meld together for me though and I’m not sure when I’d ever take the ride again. They’re more fun for me when they suddenly get played on the radio or on TV somewhere. A pleasant surprise but less is more.
Windsor Terrace
They were ok back in the day, not much to me now.
Really like their sound and great tunes
Shake your rumpaaaa
#704. I find most 80s rap music to be cheesy as all hell, and this is really no different. Probably even more so because they're all white dudes. 3/5: acceptable.
Solid album, great experiments, but nothing outstanding
It's cool.
Funky hip hop from years back. I appreciate it, though I’m not a huge fan
it was ALRIGHT
probably my favorite of the three beastie boys albums weve had so far but similar issues as the other ones. good for a song or two but hard to listen all the way through.
Okay for what it is. Assuming most people won't like this. Less polished than Check Your Head...
Like the beastie boys but sounded exactly what it was- a bunch of demos. Actually found the boulabaisse extras more interesting
I like the Beastie Boys but apart from some great tracks a lot on this album sounds the same.
Noice
Heard it before. I'm so basic but I do like Beastie Boys. It's a quality album though I think I have some different favourites from them. Sampling music from Psycho is so iconic tho 3/5
I hadn't heard this whole record before. I like the Beastie Boys hits usually so I expected a decent time. Sadly not this time. There just isn't anything here for me. But that's okay. I think this one is just okay. For me.
