Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Smh at Paul McCartney being too busy with spearheading the lo-fi movement into the mainstream to record more Beatles stuff.

Who could've known that the sound of The Beatles breaking up would be this lo-fi?

McCartney and only McCartney (with a little Linda), recorded at home, and plays like it's being recorded in your living room. Contains "Maybe I'm Amazed" and thats still a great song.

Lyrics quite random at times but then he has this ability to compose the most simple but beautiful melodies that scratch part of your brain like nothing else.

Most of these songs are amazing. Just a few make it feel a little off.

Just some classy and Chad pop rock by DADDY.

His first solo album was a reaction to everything the Beatles were doing before, a massive swing of the pendulum in the opposite direction. It's a fun, low stakes affair with little polish but plenty of charm.

This is Paul’s best solo work. But Paul really needed John’s darker side. Without that cynicism, Paul’s work was consistently… fine. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing super interesting… just lovely melodies and boring lyrics.

everyone go listen to the Paul McCartney song fuh you. its actually so bad 😭

7/10 - It was quite nice to listen to. Pretty good overall. It sounded like the beatles, unsurprisingly. I liked every night the most it was relaxing.

Thank you for leading my ears to this album!

Short and sweet without fillers. Great pop songwriting! I’m not a huge fan of how bluesy it was, and the half-finished feel of some of the songs (almost felt like Paul was still working out his sound). But Maybe I’m Amazed is on here, which is one of my favorites! 3.75⭐️

Top, mal bl country vibe k beatli

This is a pretty nice album. Little bit more raw than the Beatles albums which is nice. I think he's done as good of a job as one could, distancing himself from the group when creating a solo album.

I can’t get past McCartney as a Beatle, but this album for sure made me appreciate him more. It’s a good album to play while chillin at home. A little upbeat, good acoustics, and doesn’t feel “old”. Will add it to my playlists! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Oo You

4.5/5. Macca really loves his wife.

I never really gave this a fair chance before, but I really like it now. Very raw, very emotional, very McCartney.

Most of the songs weren't outstanding but Maybe I'm Amazed was the gem on this album.

The remarkable thing about the Beatles was each of them could and did have the ability to have a solo career in their own right. Of the four, McCartney is the most prolific. As described on the notes, this was all 'him' and done 'raw' (without the sophisticated arrangements the Beatles had available).

I was surprised at how loose and messy this album was and I loved that. Like he finally had a chance to just try out some musical ideas rather than write Beatles songs. I will listen again .

Paul gets a lot of shit, but he’s been the most prolific and most daring. Just doing whatever he feels like since 1970. I respect that he never seemed to follow the pop psychedelic trends and just did his own thing. There’s some really good stuff on this album. The songs about love, romance and Linda are the best. 4/5

One of the most "one-man-band" solo albums, by an artist capable of so much better. The lack of anyone else helping to polish the songs may explain why some sound unfinished, as will his rush to get things recorded and released. I never knew this came out before the end of his previous band, and was arguably partly responsible for bringing about the end for them. It is solid, but not 'worth breaking up The Beatles' good.

Paul eu te vejo como um pai!!! Um álbum com uma vibe meio lo-fi, super gostosinho de ouvir. É realmente o maior que nós temos! Destaques: Maybe I'm amazed, Man we was lonely, Oo You

It's cool to hear what is basically demo tracks for Paul's first solo venture. Sure, some of these songs might have been even better with John's, George's, and (to a lesser extent) Ringo's influence. But they're still good songs (a couple great ones), and they all show what a talented musician he was/is. Definitely worthy of the list.

Paul McCartney: the original Wife Guy

This was interesting. Quite an eclectic mix of songs, some of them very short, a few instrumentals, some nice guitar and melodies here and there, some nasty drumming. It wasn't too long and overall I enjoyed it enough for 4 stars, which was a surprise. I liked the lo-fi feel and the fact it sounded more like a demo tape than a fully realised album.

Maybe Paul's "granny songs" weren't that bad John

McCartney is one of the greatest song writers of his generation but should have quit while he was ahead.

A charming little album with a DIY aesthetic. I've heard that some consider this the FIRST lo-fi indie rock album and it definitely has that feel. Some throw away songs for sure but there is plenty here to sink your teeth into, and I appreciate the spontaneous feel of many of the songs. Plus it does have one of McCartney's very best songs as a solo artist in Maybe I'm Amazed. 4 stars.

If you go into this expecting the Beatles, you’re going to come out disappointed. It’s very laid back, however. It seems like some of the material could have used some polishing before recording, but that’s also part of the charm.

I enjoy this record, who knew the guy from Wings had it in him! Momma Miss America will always be my jam! Maybe I'm Amazed is arguably the best solo Beatles song?

I really liked this, just fun music, nothing prolific or ground-breaking. Just fun. Even if you don't like McCartney, at least the album is fast.

This was the first time I got this album. Really good

Songs from this usually end up in my Spotify shuffling, but this was the first time I’ve listened to the album in its entirety. Not a hot take but I really love Maybe I’m Amazed

Torn between: -Appreciation of his lo-fi underproduced sound oozing with great melodies, hooks, and ideas -Disappointment that he couldn't have taken his time and/or worked with other talented musicians (such as John, George, and Ringo...) to fully fledge out these songs because they had the potential to be so much more.

This was an unexpected delight. It felt more raw and personal than the material he recorded and released later in the 1970s. I can see why it's on this list. Thanks to Cameron Crowe and the movie "Jerry Maguire," I know 2 more tracks on here than I originally would have. It may not be a 5/5, but this was quite enjoyable and I could easily see myself listening to this again at some point.

Quite easy to listen to, but it can lack direction at times. Paul is still good here though, with a lot of the songs just sounding good in the background whilst you do something. Also Paul really loved Linda.

What I have always liked about this album is that it wasn't meant to be a 5 star record. It was just Paul doing what he does. He recorded it at home and got his wife to sing a little. When I was a teenager dreaming of being a musician, this album showed me that you could just record on a 4-track in your bedroom and still do something worthwhile. It didn't need perfection; the imperfections are what gave it character.

McCartney is the debut solo album by Paul McCartney, originally released in 1970. This album has a really intimate feel to it. He recorded it at a home studio, and it shows. Not saying that the content is low quality, moreso that it's not extremely polished or produced. I think that's a strength of this album. Some of the ideas are a bit half-baked but I think it adds to the charm. I'm sure people were clamoring for new Beatle-adjacent content by the time the band broke up. I'm very surprised at the amount of instrumental tracks on here. I guess Paul really wanted to flex his chops. I think this is a really fun record that was quite fitting for release in the wake of the Beatle drama.

I guess there's detractors of this album that it's incomplete or half-done, but these songs are great as they are. Solid songs with some great musicianship.

So Paul proving that, chilling at his house, he was the best guitarist in the band, broke up the Beatles? Anyhow, not all these lo-fi experiments are successful, but many are quite lovely, especially the instrumentals. I’m glad these songs were recorded here, as I worry if they had been brought to the Beatles, John would have rejected many out of hand.

i actually thought i was gonna hate this but it’s actually very good, low 4

Pre-listening thoughts: my favorite Beatle often alternates between Paul and George so I am a little excited for this! I also know and like Paul’s stuff with the Wings so I feel like I’m familiar enough with his solo stuff to know what to expect. Post/during listening thoughts: this is about 90% what I expected lol. I didn’t expect this many instrumental tracks though. I feel like Paul just has a lot of fun with his music and that is so apparent listening to this album. Fun, short songs with interesting instrument use and catchy melodies. Where can you go wrong? 7/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah just listen to the Beatles Fav tracks: That Would Be Something, Every Night, Man We Was Lonely, Maybe I’m Amazed Least fav tracks: n/a

Softspoken and wondrous, harsh and outspoken when necessary. Although it lacks a musical intricacy it pulls me in with amazing lyrics and strings me along with its simplicity and thoughts.

Favourite tracks: that would be something; junk; maybe I'm amazed; oo you

Not my favorite McCartney solo albums (that would be McCartney II), but it is a very good album. Thankfully, as a songwriter McCartney has the the good sense to know when a concept has been played out and leave the audience wanting more as he moves on to something else. He also keeps things interesting by providing lots of variety in his compositions and taking risks (like the outro Glasses on the back half of Hot As Sun) and the homage to the indigenous tribe of "Kreen-Akrore". McCartney's solo album, lauded as a progenitor of lo-fi albums is waaaay better than any of the other lo-fi artists at the time. I'm looking at you Neil Young, etc. I enjoyed this album very much. It does have the feeling of intimately sitting in with a master songwriter who is at the top of his craft. All lean hooks, no fat, no indulgence. It is kind of crazy to realize that with "Live and Let Die" and BAND ON THE RUN coming in 1973, he was only going to get even better.

Enjoyed this album. For better or worse, I always saw it as McCartney's cathartic cleansing, to work through all those unused Beatles ideas.

overall good album, I realt enjoy paul's perspective on the songs and the production of the album. note to self: check out singalong junk again

Actually enjoyed this more than any of the Beatles albums. That said, I've over-rated a few Beatles albums, and this is still a 4 for me.

This album felt like he was trying to be American which I found a bit weird. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed it - I didn’t mind that it was a bit different. Fave Track: Maybe I’m Amazed Rating: 4

It's the Macca's debut album and I was excited to listen to it. I'm a huge fan of The Beatles and I love ATMP by George Harrison. Although not being close to as good as the aforementioned albums it's still great. It sets your expectations low at first with tracks that are just Paul jamming out catchy tunes. Ironically, once you get to "Junk" the album gets better! Favorite songs: Junk, Man We Was Lonely, Momma Miss America, Teddy Boy, Maybe I'm Amazed. Nice to hear Paul just having fun!

I always enjoy McCartney's solo work. Maybe I'm Amazed is an fantastic song. 4 solid stars.

It's remarkable how unimaginative some great musicians are when it comes to choosing titles for their first albums. Tracy Chapman's first album was called Tracy Chapman, Marla Glenn's first album was called This is Marla Glenn and now McCartney by Paul McCartney. Wouldn't Mc have been enough? Or would the risk of confusion with Ronald have been too great? Either way, the album was fun and I really liked some of the tracks. I'll gladly listen to it again. 4/5

There are two ways to view Paul McCartney's debut solo album. Either it's a rushed, half-assed record trying to take attention away from Lennon's (then secret) departure from The Beatles. Or it's a masterpiece of lofi recording from one of the century's greatest songwriters. In truth, it's a little of both. After Lennon's decision to quit, McCartney isolated himself and started to record an album in secret. When he then butt heads with Harrison and Starr over the rushed release, it caused the final breakup of the group. Due to the nature of the recording, the music sounds incomplete and unpolished, like early demo recordings. The lack of his bandmates feels striking here and one can imagine the layers they could have brought in. But 'McCartney' also has a certain minimalist charm. When does a song become a finished song? There's no right or wrong here. The Beatles had already experimented with that idea by stringing together various incomplete songs into a medley during the 'Abbey Road' session. But now he took that a step further to showcase exactenugu at he could bring on his own. Whether it's good enough without John Lennon is for the audience to decide. These home recordings are fairly austere but certain songs really shine, particularly 'Maybe I'm Amazed'. Reviews of this album have been mixed. I'm argue that it's not McCartney's best work (I prefer the very offbeat 'Ram' personally). But it's certainly significant for the backstory and the template it set for lofi recordings. That idea would later be embraced by punk and garage bands who no longer felt that they needed a fancy studio to be able to make a good album. You just need instruments some good ideas, and something to record them.

4/5. I was expecting a little overblown pop but honestly, the simple melodies and mostly down to earth songs really worked. Maybe I'm Amazed is clearly the highlight but just a nice collection of simple pop songs is a nice change of pace, and McCartney definitely knows how to write and sing them. And some of them are just instrumental, feels like a collection of ideas that were maybe rejected by the other members of the Beatles that he could finally just sit down and relax for once. It's not perfect but it does exactly what it sets out to do, meander and wander like a relaxing day at the park. Best Song: Maybe I'm Amazed, Every Night, Momma Miss America

Macca music for quiet Sunday mornings

Sir Paul, one of the greatest song writers and musicians of all time!!! He demonstrates his skills across a wide range of instruments and delivers a couple of absolutely outstanding songs. If it had a few more stunners I'd give it a five, but he's set such a high standard even better than average falls behind his best......

Yo this guy was in a band one time

Great Album! i enjoyed it a lot, but the songs could be longer sometimes. It felt a bit short and not fully fullfilled. Still alot fun and joy during listening to it! 4.0/5.0

Decent

This album is the definition of “Lo-Fi”. This album didn’t need to be made. It doesn’t stand up against any of the other works of the Beatles or McCartney’s own works. It doesn’t really work as an album as a majority of the songs are half baked. However. This album is the definition of “Lo-Fi”. It went on to inspire countless other musicians and serve as a source of inspiration for them. It showed music didn’t always need to be polished. It showed that an odd idea was better than no idea. It provided the foundation for McCartney’s penchant for breaking the rules and trying something new.

Junk es una de mis canciones favoritas de la vida.

His first album after the Beatles, and it shows. Great acoustic tunes that could easily be added to any later Beatles album. Pretty good!

Gets a fourth star for Maybe I’m Amazed, maybe my favorite song at one time.

I’m a huge Beatles fan, but I’ve never really liked the solo stuff from any of them. It’s all fine, it just lacks the magic they had together

This album shows the diverse songwriting and performance brilliance from one of the all time greats. Not bad for the first exit from the bug group! Performance on Maybe I'm Amazed is off the charts.

4 stars for fun stereo panning on what is a 3 star album

It's McCartney, so it's pretty easy to enjoy and great. 4.5

Very good easy listening, my favorite was “Junk”

Really mellow and enjoyable. Familiar and different simultaneously.

While this is not Paul’s best solo record, there is a lot to love. His melodies are just so incredible and enjoyable, despite some songs on here feeling like demos.

A lot of sketches on this I wish he would have built out I to something more. One known banger that would have easily been a Beatles hit had they been together. This album is small, weaker, raw. It's good. Not great.

This is the album that killed The Beatles apparently. Paul made it in secret, and they all got pissed when he released it because it took the shine off of the album they released: Let It Be. Apparently both albums dropped on the same day, and McCartney refused to change the release date. McCartney's album feels unfinished. Like he had a bunch of ideas and quickly scrambled to put them on tape. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but if he had spent more time on it and actually recorded it in a studio instead of his own house, I think it would have been better. I feel the album is more of a fuck you to the Beatles than anything. Favourite songs: Maybe I'm Amazed, Oo You, Momma Miss America, Man We Was Lonely, Every Night, Junk Least favourite songs: The Lovely Linda 4/5

sehr gutes Album, perfekt remastered.

Great album! Maybe I’m Amazed is one of my favorite songs and this album was a short, fun listen.

I really admire how cool and normal Paul McCartney is. And I really admire how cool and normal McCartney by Paul McCartney is.

Great to hear a generational talent just messing around in his home studio all raw and lo-fi

Deliberately half-baked and throwaway in nature, this is P-Mac trolling and taking the piss, and for the most part I like it. Especially ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’, one of the great love songs of all time.

Simple, quick, solid

A bit light and fluffy but also cosy and intimate in the most McCartney of ways. Two or three genuine classics on here. Also two or three bum songs.

I'm not even going to deny I'm a bit biased when giving this album 4 stars. There are some genuinely good tracks here, Paul was fresh of the beatles and looking to experiment a little bit. That meant there were also some ok tracks. I really like the album though, so four stars it is.

I've been suffering a bit with Beatles-fatigue having worked through 68% of this list, but this album was quite refreshing, Paul cutting loose and being a bit more groovy.

Not bad for a McCartney Solo Album

What a breath of fresh air! Very easy to listen to, and I wish there was more of it. A solid album with one of the most iconic songs ever on it.

Старина отошёл от студийных изысков и сделал домашний альбом. Сырой лоу-фай звучит приятно, а вот то что сами мелодии не везде на максимум - это да

Interesting first solo from him. Not much to really grab on to besides the obvious "hit" but I can see the appeal.

Somehow have never heard this before, but I really like it—very simple and effortless, in a good way. I like the cover too.

I know this guy

Nice album. Some really great drumlines and basslines that I'm surprised haven't been sampled more.

Saw a review that said this was more of a sketchbook than an album. I totally agree, but while i think that person meant it negatively, i think its awesome

Really really solid, much more scaled-back from Beatles albums but awesome nonetheless. Works very well listening to it as a whole in one sitting. Some standouts: Every Night, Momma Miss America, Maybe I'm Amazed.

I had never heard anything from this album except Maybe I'm Amazed. I really enjoyed it. It's like a proto-Guided by Voices. McCartney never disappoints

McCartney is the first solo album by Paul, just weeks before their last album Let It Be was release, wich create some beef with others members. The album was recorded with Linda in a scottish ranch, very mininalistic, with only the two playing all the instruments. All the songs could be consider folk rock i think, but the minimalistic effect really stand out and some are completely instrumental or have 1 sentences like Hit Like Sun Glasse, valentine day, Singalong Junk and Kreen-Akore wich were moslty improvised. Maybe I’m amaze is the song that stand out the most, one of McCartney most known solo songs, and with the piano driven riff, back vocals and beautiful lyrics is a very good song. Other good songs: Teddy Bear, That Would Be Something, Man We Was Lonely and The Lovely Linda. The songs are moslty very short, and not that impactfull but the whole make something very cool. Mam We Was Lonely is probably the most Beatles-Like of them all, like fr the White Album, so of course i like it. The album really feel Paul and Linda, and the space in wich they concived the album is also very important, it dosen’t feel like a Beatles album or just a way to surf on their success just a cool simple album with his wife in a far away ranch.

This is actually way better than I was expecting it to be. Some genuinely lovely little ditties in here, and the whole affair strikes me as being surprisingly brave for a multi-millionaire.

4/5 - I really enjoyed this. Had the potential to be 5/5 if the songs were more complete. Standout tracks: - Every night 5/5 - Maybe I'm amazed 5/5 this reminded me of Mountain I'd say I'm officially a fan of Paul McCartney

Loved junk, man we were lonely, teddy boy and maybe I’m amazed

I thought this was a really good album but I don't know if I see the hype about McCartney being one of the greatest song writers of all time. I think a lot of it was elevated coffee shop music, but I will say the instrumentals showed off a lot more creativity than the tracks with vocals and I do think that deserves a lot of credit. By 1970 though, I don't know if any of this is true Earth shattering.

Cant hate this is a great album

Liked it more than the Lennon solo album. The instrumentals were really good. No offence to Paul's voice, but I preferred the bits he wasn't singing on.

As much as The Beatles are praised for their innovative and intricate production, you often sense a yearning from the band to simplify and strip songs back to basics. This seemed to be an ongoing theme of the Beatles' solo output - at least to begin with - as if sheer exhaustion from producing so much extraordinary music and navigating internal band politics had them wanting to sit with guitar or piano and just record whatever came out. And the likelihood that it would be good - certainly better than most - would be confidently high - because look at what they accomplished before. And, so, naturally, McCartney solo (and John and George) will always be compared to The Beatles collectively and found wanting. But, here, this fine album finds a relaxed Paul (perhaps relaxed sounding, as Wikipedia suggests he was feeling depressed and confused), playing and making what he likes, overdubbing on four-track, experimenting a little but pleasing nobody but himself - and that sounds like a good place to be.

ball mcfartney

53 years later I’m finally hearing McCartneys first solo album. Pretty good.

there are better paul mccartney albums.. but this one still slaps 4.2/5

Enjoyed the experimentation and lo-fi feel. Not every track is great but there are plenty of gems to keep you entertained

I really enjoyed the instrumental tracks on this one. The monkey noises and panting at the end was interesting...

Experimental and from the heart.

The Lovely Linda – 4 That Would Be Something – 4 Valentine Day – 4 Every Night – 5 Hot As Sun / Glasses – 4.5 Junk – 5 Man We Was Lonely – 4.5 Oo You – 4 Momma Miss America – 4 Teddy Boy – 4 Singalong Junk – 4 Maybe I’m Amazed – 5 Kreen-Akrore – 4 Average – 4.3 Gotta love Paul 👍

Paul McCartney is famous for a reason, still, not my favorite

Amazing album.

I wanted to come into this with my normal baseline 'meh' toward McCartney's solo work. But half the tracks on this really really worked for me. I appreciate the pure "acousticness" of it.

Pretty good! It's impressive how talented all four Beatles were in their heyday. Favorite track: "Every Night."

An enjoyable listen for McCartney's first solo endeavor. I think I'm probably more of a fan of his solo releases after this record based on what I've heard from some of the more popular tracks, but nonetheless I enjoyed this. May not revisit but look forward to additional records from his solo catalogue.

After digging into the history of this album, you can't help but appreciate how this was manifested from the ashes of the Beatles and what he was going through mentally. Paul did everyone on this album by himself with some vocal help from Linda and it's simplicity and raw/lofi aesthetic is very cool for that era.

Sweet album - wonderfully short with some great songs.

Man this man can write music. Not my favorite sound ever, but the lyrics and melodies are transcendent.

I enjoyed the actual songs on this album. However there's alot of fluff and filler which slightly detracts from it and seems unnecessary.

Good album. Haven't listened to this album much in the past all the way through. I have always loved the song Every Night. 4 stars for me

Folky! Momma Miss America is a jam. I'm fairly certain Gramatik must have sampled this song. I'll have to track down which song it is. Singalong Junk is a peaceful number. This album felt a bit lackluster to begin (for Paul McCartney) but really shaped up toward the end to square away the 4 stars that I wanted to give it.

I've never listened to this McCartney album and it has vibes. Definitely sounds fresher now than it probably did at the time of releases. Nonetheless, some stuff is undercooked and probably needed another pass through.

Jättemycke bättre än ja vänta mig shoutout mccartney

Not even close to being a classic, but it's a nice listen. 3.5

Solid, if minor album. More like a sketchbook, with a couple of standout McCartney tunes, especially "Maybe I'm Amazed," which has stood the test of time. Paul might have been at an emotional low at the time because of the breakup of the Beatles, but his excellent musicianship is evident, as he plays every instrument very well and is in good voice. It was nice to revisit this album.

I often hear of this album being an "inspiration" to future lo-fi experiments and releases yet this album still sounds so much better than lo-fi rock...even though it really is not much more than a demo. Still, hearing Paul McCartney sing a demo (most evident on his over-saturated vocals) is an unfair advantage that...well, only Paul had. Cheater. I don't know - it's not "great" but I legitimately enjoy the simplicity of it and always have liked his vocals and the way he crafts his melodies. A simple 4. Plus "Maybe I'm Amazed" is just legendary so come on... 7/10 4 stars.

Loads of fun and sweet and groovy hooks and melodies ("Lovely Linda," "Junk, "Every Night"), though most are feel than fully developed and/or outright unfinished. The playful vibe sounds like the product of personal happiness. One may prefer the pleasantly loose rag-bag effect to the often overly polished Paul. "Maybe I'm Amazed" has never been a particular fave but sounds great here in contrast to the (comparative) bits and bobs that surround it.

I was surprised how few of these songs had more than a couple words thrown together for lyrics but reading about the background of this album, it made more sense. I'm a lifelong Beatles fan and Paul has always been my favourite, although I've devoted very little time to his solo work. I enjoyed this and would listen to it again.

Lovely and sad pure form music.

1970. Maybe I’m Amazed is the only track I know, but just for that song:

very good, much better than I imagined and definitely hear Beatles influence. Would like to listen some more. Probably a 4.5

Such a lovely album.

Honestly, this is Paul's weakest album of the 70's. It's barely an album, being a bunch of experimental stuff he slapped together at home alone. Junk and Maybe I'm Amazed are the only things elevating this.

The Dad Rock Bible. Maybe McCartney will not surprise you if you listen to it without considering its release year. This was the year the Beatles disbanded; before the 70s music revolution. Many great bands, albums, and songs could be traced back to this album. Think about it. Short and Sweet, McCartney is a charming album that warms the soul and heals the mind.

Some real good stuff here. Guess it's a good thing he didn't just let it be!

Ok, Paul McCartney is absolutely key. But given I only have 1001 albums, it’d be band on the run, McCartney 2 and maybe Ram. This is a throat clearer, with admittedly maybe I’m amazed as an example of what McCartney could do. The rest of it is mid range McCartney, meaning it would have been a stone cold career making classic for anyone else. But McCartney was to do better. From anyone else, 58 stars. From Paul? 3.5.

Struggling to believe this album is 54 years old & the vinyl copy I bought brand new at the time still does the job. I can’t explain how momentous the break-up of The Beatles was, particularly to big fans like myself. So the release of this (the month before The Beatles’ Let It Be was released) was a big deal. There’s a lot I love on this - That Would Be Something is a great opener. Every Night is a standout (although Phoebe Snow’s 1978 cover is probably a better version). Both versions of Junk are just beautiful, & Maybe I’m Amazed has become a classic. He could have done without Teddy Boy (long before Peter Jackson’s Get Back film, I had a Beatles bootleg of the same name on which McCartney sings & whistles while Lennon takes the piss in the background. Understandably. It’s a boring ditty. And the drum solo bits of the closer, Kreen-Akrore were ill-advised. Maybe Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles, but he never did anything quite that lame. Still, I love this. I was 19 when I got it, after all.

I have, I confess, thought very unkind things about Pul McCartney’s solo works over the years. Maybe it was too many viewings of the ‘Coming Up’ video, a perennial favourite on the ABC. Maybe it was my disklike of ‘Band on the Run’. Maybe it was the ubiquity of ‘Mull of Kintyre’ during my childhood. Most probably it was my purchase of “Shots from the Hip”, the collected writings of Charles Shaar Murray when it came out round 1990. It contains his 1975 NME article entitled Paul McCartney; ‘No, not really in a way actually as it happens’, and I think it caught me at an impressionable age and profoundly influenced my opinions on Paul’s solo career. I shall quote at length: “Up until the arrival of ‘Band On The Run’ in the latter months of 1973, the prevailing assessment of Monsieur McCartney was that he was the possessor of a ‘basically bourgeois talent’ -- which meant that he was essentially uncommitted to rock and roll, was irremediably cutesy-pie, played and composed music with an unforgivably low cojones quotient, wrote songs that begged for Andy Williams to cover them, wimped around all over the place with a wife who seemed to have even less musical credibility than her fiendish Oriental opposite number, allowed an overwhelming facility for pleasant melody and easy-going charm to degenerate into vacuous glibness, angled his music at the mums and dads, came off poorly in comparison to the gritty honesty and commitment of John Lennon, the uplifting spirituality of George Harrison (or what looked like uplifting spirituality at the time) and the cloddish charm of Ringo Starr (from whom nobody expected anything better than cloddish charm anyway), was a swot and a teacher’s pet and a soppy sneak who didn’t even _pretend_ to relate to a seventies which had taken him at his word about doing it in the road. ... Amidst much hijinx, ‘Band On The Run’ emerges onto a suitably impressed world, and anti-Macca canards are dissipated like wet farts in a strong wind. … It was an event of almost morality-play proportions, a triumph of decency. After years of taking shit from everybody for being a square and a Blue Meanie, vindication had arrived with a surprise knockout in the twelfth round. McCartney proved that Nice Guys didn’t have to Finish Last; that you could be a Kleen Kut Kid and a scholar and a gentleman and still make a decent album. ...which is where things start getting heavy. ‘Venus and Mars’ is not only one the worst albums I’ve ever heard from a so-called ‘major artist’, but it’s also the most decadent. … ‘Venus and Mars’ is a symptom of decadence because it is the product of a considerable talent in an advanced state of decay. It is totally lacking in either true beauty, true strength or true innocence; offering in stead of these qualities – qualities which one could quite reasonably demand from the work of an artist of Paul McCartney’s eminence – a vapid, shallow prettiness which is ultimately more saddening than the work of even the dumbest no-hoper.” He then goes on to recount his somewhat awkward interview with Paul. It’s fascinating and well worth a read (https://archive.org/details/shotsfromhip0000murr ) Reading this again for the first time in 30 years, I can see how I was imprinted with this viewpoint, much like a duckling imprints on the first creature they see after hatching. Given that I didn’t even like ‘Band On The Run’ 9the one supposedly good record), I gave Paul’s solo catalogue a pretty wide berth. “It is clearly”, I thought, “all tepid rubbish." A few catchy singles, admittedly, and I have a hipster appreciation for Temporary Secretary and Let Me Roll It, but other than that, I’ll pass. The foundation of this opinion was Mr Shaar Murray’s well-written piece of rock critic snark, and these days I am trying to ween myself off rock critic snark. It hasn’t always done me too many favours over the years. So, this point of this very long introduction is to say that I haven’t actually listened to much of Sir Paul’s solo catalogue, and never knowingly to this album (Maybe I’m Amazed excepted). And what a pleasant surprise it is! I didn’t expect the lofi, unpolished charm of the recording style, which aligns well with my aesthetic taste. The expensive overdubbing and mixing at professional studios really helps. I find most of the songs low-key charming. My mate Dave Lewis says of McCartney that he will walk into a recording sessions with three of the most amazing songs you ever heard, three pretty good average quality numbers, and three pieces of shit. His problem is that he can’t tell the difference. And I think that is kind of true of this record; Maybe I’m Amazed, Ooh You, That Would Be Something and Junk are my favourite songs on the album, there’s some middling quality tracks, and a few tracks that are really only demos at best. I think we can all agree that the world could live without the glorified drum solo that is Kreen-Akora. The home recording adds an appealing patina of grit, that can sometimes be missing from Paul’s output when over-polished. I think all the Beatles thought that anything they happened to commit to tape was genius and people would buy it. It must be hard to maintain perspective when you are a Beatle. But even for the undercooked material on here, there is a simple and earthy charm here that I wasn’t expecting. I have listened to this all the way through about four times, and I really enjoy it. I am kicking myself for being too snobby to give this a go previously. I mean, I still don’t like ‘Band On The Run’, but this is right up my alley. It’s a really likable record, I have the advantage of listening to this 50 years removed from its original release, and so can separate it from the context of the Beatles acrimonious break-up. It’s a modest album, maybe too delicate, too humble to have been launched into the bitterness of the Beatles dissolution, but heard on its own terms, I like it. I’m going put this on my want-list for next time I see a copy in a bargain bin. It’s no Abbey Rd, but I like it 3.5 stars worth. Rounding up, as penance for all of the unkind things I thought about McCartney for so long.

Paul McCartney kinda just f**king around in the studio, making songs about how much he loves his wife, is better than a good amount of albums I've heard through this project. He's a legend, in and out of the Beatles, for a reason.

Uuu every night is on this. Macca wanking it a lot. Should’ve hired a drummer.

Every time I listen to it I like it more. Macca without the perfectionism gives it a USP in his back catalogue. It almost feels like somebody has released an album without his knowledge, with tracks in various stages of completion, but I sort of like that. Every Night is a great song, Junk is lovely and Maybe I’m Amazed, Oo You, That would be something and Momma Miss America are superb. Lennon would have vetoed Teddy Boy - and I think did on earlier albums? - which would have helped, but even depressed and half engaged, McCartney is still better than 99% of his peers. Solid 4 stars for me

prety good

His love for Linda was so real. First track is so sweet. This album feels mostly like a brain dump. Like he had been tooling around with ideas for years and finally got to put them on tape. There are two tracks called ‘Junk’, that seem to support that theory. And then Maybe I’m Amazed comes on and everything else is eclipsed. It’s got to be one of the most romantic songs of all time. It feels so authentic, so timeless. It’s probably the best thing he’s ever done. Added 6 tracks to my playlist.

Bonus point awarded for being Macca.

McCartney's first album on his own has several songs that are teasers of what is to come from him in later works. Truly enjoyed revisiting this album, which I have had on vinyl for some time.

McCartney is a masterful songwriter, and that really shows on this record. Each song is exactly what it needs to be and creates its own world. My only issue with this release is that it lacks a little cohesion and it's very short. Great release from Paul.

Enjoyable listen. Doesn’t outstay its welcome

Inexplicably - despite being a Beatles obsessive for 50 years, apart from the odd McCartney release in the early 80s, and Band on the Run - I didn't go anywhere near any of the solo stuff until last year. This isn't Ram, or up with the other immediate post Beatles stuff, but there are moments that sink in and stay. Maybe I'm Amazed is stunning, what could the best backing band in history have added to it? The alternate takes on the archive version are equally cool

This McCartney guy is pretty good, I hope he sure continues to pursue music as a career. This is an interesting album with only a cpuple songs and then the rest are kind of jam samples. Overall, pretty good, though I so far prefer George Harrison's solo work immediately following the Beatle breakup.

Paul at his most spontaneous and free. The off the cuff approach that permeates these tracks is making this album feel alive and vibrant after all these years. This is almost slacker rock before its time!

So what I got from context about this album is that is very much a messy experience getting this out 😂 But moving past the history of it as a whole, I was never really a fan of Paul McCartney. I understood his importance especially within the course of his "little band" but as a solo artist nothing about him every intrigued me. That didn't really change after hearing this (he's still my least favorite member from the Beatles) BUT I can appreciate what he was doing with this album. In no better words, he was basically testing every aspect of his own musicality. I really think this was his opportunity to throw everything he could at the drawing board and see what would stick. And given that there wasn't really any music sounding like this when he was around, its quite impressive. Not a bad attempt at all and APPARENTLY he gets better so I can honestly say I'm intrigued. Hopefully this list will give me more of his music to work through.. 4 out of 5 stars.

I don't like Paul McCartney generally. I like the John and George songs the most. He's a savant when it comes to writing songs – I'll not begrudge his obvious and monumental musical talent – but he's not my favorite. Or so I thought. I *like* this album. Apparently the Paul who's untethered and depressed about the direction his life is going to take after the dissolution of the Beatles is one I can relate to. I like the spare arrangements. I enjoy hearing the instrumentals. Depressed, no-budget, basement McCartney reveals the soul of the artist. I'm a little beside myself now, re-assessing my worldview.

Never listened to McCartney's solo albums. Really enjoyed.

Some good tracks but not really my thing

An album that, under ordinary circumstances, I'd happily give a 2 or 3. There's an element of simplicity that usually grinds my gears with other artists. However, Paul McCartney makes it work with his mind-bending charm and heart he puts into his singing. The bare-bones instrumental approach to most of these tracks works excellently with his vocal. The only particularly complex arrangement, Maybe I'm Amazed, is also one of the best songs by any Beatles member. The remaining tracks, of which there are many, hit different in the context of McCartney's emotional state at the time, and there's something about them that just clicks. 4/5. Maybe I'm delusional. Maybe I'm amazed. Heh.

Skondin plata. Dálítið eins og herra Paul hafi mætt með eitt tilbúið lag í stúdíóið (Maybe I'm Amazed) og restin er bara svona... tilraunastarfsemi til að fylla upp í plötuna. Tilbúna lagið er hins vegar svo gott að það bætir margfalt upp fyrir skort á undirbúningi hinna laganna.

Paul McCartney just messing around in a home studio is better than most people messing around in a home studio, but it's still just messing around. There are at least 5 other McCartney solo albums that are more worthy of being on this list. Maybe I'm Amazed ranks among Paul's best songs though, and Every Night is also top tier McCartney. 4 stars.

It's got all the jovial sing along cutesy pop rock that you would expect from a Paul McCartney record. "Maybe I'm Amazed" really stands out from the rest of the tracks though. Some of the songs sound like short little vignettes that come and go and then "Maybe I'm Amazed" comes out of the blue with this super thought out and perfected track. I think some of the mix leaves a bit to be desired. The Beatles were great at making songs that were great while only using a few layers, and this aims to do that too, but sometimes the tracks can feel pretty empty. But maybe simplicity was the intent and I'm overthinking it? It's hard for me to rate this album because it feels like a strong 3 but I think it can easily just as much be a 4. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Everything by the Beatles or any side projects of the members have always gone down well with me. I’ve not listened to today’s album before, but I go into this optimistically. Hopefully it hits the spot, so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Every Night, Hot As Sun There was a surprising amount of instrumental music here which was a pleasant surprise. Paul’s voice sounds as we expect it too, but absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that, so those vocal-less tracks make his voice stand out more. There’s a lovely blend of guitar and piano here, and some very catchy bass lines. This is an easy-to-recommend album.

HL: “Junk”, “Maybe I’m Amazed”, “Every Night”, “Man We Was Lonely”, Maybe some of the critical roasting of this 1st draft of an album is justified, but I love it still <3 Favourite song is “Junk”, an off-cut from the Beatles days (I’ll even forgive that they played it twice!) November 15, 2023

It's Paul, he's a Beatle. It's fine. But a bit uninspired.

For years I said George was my favorite Beatle (and I do like him quite a lot) but I was kidding myself, goofy bouncy Paul will always have my heart. I don't even know how to articulate what the difference is between his noodling and Da Capo yesterday, but for example more meandering, lyric-less tracks like Momma Miss America work for me where that album just never clicked. Even Teddy Boy has chord changes that force me to pay attention. Every song here is listenable, and Maybe I'm Amazed is the 'cherry' on top.

Maybe I’m Amazing is a five star song. The rest of the album is very enjoyable, though not necessarily remarkable. Can’t really say a bad thing about it though.

This is a good but not great album. Honestly surprised at the number of instrumentals given Sir Paul's songwriting ability. One all-time classic and the rest are fine, but nowhere near that level. I was impressed that he played all of the instruments himself. I would give it a 3.5, but that rounds it up for me.

great album, nice tracks

Very good, a few bits of ob la di-esque trite but overall it had solid Beatles energy.

Tem umas músicas estranhas, mas em geral é muito bom

Classic post-Beatles McCartney, if you’re into it.

Despite all the talks that McCartney breaking up The Beatles, and that it sounds unfinished and using only basic and minimal equipment and mixing, this record is an amazing solo debut. Hailed as one of the pioneers of the Lo-fi sound, he brings a fresh take that I don't believe he could have achieved with The Beatles. Retrospectively he termed it as one of rock's first Indie albums - to which I don't disagree. Best: Every Night Worst: Kreen-Akrore

I really like the stripped down and raw kind of sound this album has. I have not listened to this before and found it enjoyable.

I don't consider myself a big fan of Paul McCartney, but I don't mind his music. So, listening to the debut solo album seemed like it is something worth doing. I was not amazed.

This is a beautiful collection of strange mismatched songs that are held together by the fact they are all odd ducks. The songwriting feels easy, fun, and effortless while still remaining elegant. It’s really a great album, but there isn’t too much substance; some, but not enough for a fiver. 4/5

Instrumentalisierung groovy

te quiero mucho paul mccartney 8/10

Kind of generic considering his other output but even generic Macca is still pretty boss

Maybe I’m Amazed is a great song but otherwise there isn’t much substance to this album. I could see myself listening to it if I was in the right mood but it’s not an everyday sort of album for me. 7/10

I can see why this album was so hated when it came out since everyone basically expected another Beatles album and also blamed Paul for the breakup, but this was a really great standalone album. It’s admirable that Paul decided to go so far in his own direction with a lofi, one man production that still has the trademark Beatles songwriting but in Paul’s own way. Every night was the standout for me.

I was absolutely going to make a joke about how Macca Two better be on this list if you’re gonna include One and Ram. But Ram isn’t even on this list. Tug of War? Nope! What is this f-ing list without Ram?

Every song is good, but as a whole, I think it could have better organization. Kind of feels like a collection of Beatles leftovers.

The great thing about this album is that it shows just how weird Paul McCartney is. He made an album that many saw at the time as unfinished that spanned multiple genres and wasn't afraid to lean into the saccharine. It is at times conventional and at times experimental and somehow remains so distinctly McCartney. His gift for melody is unmatched and I really like how homemade this album is. It's not his best work, but there is a lot of joy in this album that is hard to ignore.

Pop rock blues. Interesante.

I rarely listen to McCartney albums but when I do I really love it! This is just one of those annual reminders to listen to his best albums again. This is a corker, classic McCartney song-writing story-telling and also just stringing nonsense together to make some nice art. The unique riffs, melodies, lyrics and sounds somehow all have a signature McCartney vibe which I can't put my finger on which brings it all together and makes it so clearly his. Love Man we was Lonely, Singalong Junk. A great time listening to this.

Honestly it isn't mad how many songs PM wrote, like its actually unbelievable this amount of stuff came from one brain. This was a wonderful album, some real highlights were Maybe I'm Amazed. A fantastic mix of warm styles

This is really good. Some amazing stuff on there. Was a bit weird the wide range of styles on there, I kind of feel that an album shouldn't just be loads of random different styles but then again they are all great.

Surprisingly, I liked McCartney more than I thought I would. I know Paul is talented, but I have had a hard time exploring his work post Beatles. "Maybe I'm Amazed" was the only track from this album that I've heard before, which felt like the most Beatles-esque of the tracks but not necessarily my favorite track on the album. I particularly enjoyed the instrumentals and the tracks that dipped into blues (e.g., "Valentine Day"). I rated side two higher than side 1, but the whole album consistently rose above good. "That Would Be Something" dipped down in to the "okay, I guess" range. I could probably come back to find out what I missed the first time.

Brilliant album! Maybe I'm Amazed may be my favourite solo Beatles song and it's definitely my favourite solo Paul McCartney song

For some reason I always thought Paul's solo albums would be boring and I was so wrong. Loved it

dimi zegt echt fucking slecht maat ouwe rakker maar decent album hoor goed voor op het werk.

Album de nice guy

pas son meilleur mais bon

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Man we was lonely, Singalong junk, Maybe I’m amazed

pretty similar to some of his Beatles stuff Maybe Im Amazed especially is among his best work

It sounds like an album of Beatles demos or unreleased tracks. McCartney is a legendary songwriter and can churn out incredible melodies with such ease. That's definitely the case here, but his worst songwriting tendencies are also at play here. The album lacks direction and polish, the finishing touch that made his songs with The Beatles so special. I spent most of the album waiting for Maybe I'm Amazed.

This is like a 3 or 3.5 for me. It has some really good songs and some really average ones too. Paul is my favorite Beatle so he gets a 4.

Mostly light and fun and tuneful. Charmingly rough around the edges and tossed-off, with some winningly greasy/honky bits (e.g., "Momma Miss America") -- one has never dug the sickly-sweet and perfectionist Paul. The more polished "Maybe I'm Amazed" has never sounded better, shining through like a sunburst at the end.

Very charming and quaint listen. I've always been a fan of the McCartney sound and Junk and Teddy Boy are great examples of it. There's a lot of love and heart in these simple songs.

Ramshackle, melodic beauty from the most melodic of the best band ever.

moglo je i bolje, al opet...moglo je i gore. dobar 3.5.

Surprisingly I loved this.

Wel oké. Iets minder zweverig dan wat de Beatles zijn. En wat meer bluesrock achtig

Favorite track(s): Every Night, Junk, Maybe I'm Amazed

I don’t mean this disparagingly but it’s apt that there’s a song called Junk on here. This album feels like it’s been collected from a master craftsman’s workshop: some pieces are fully formed and wonderful (Here Today, Maybe I’m Amazed), but often these are odds and ends that were started and then aside to be revisited later for refinement and polish. McCartney is a genius but this sounds unfinished.

Un beatle

feels like i opened paul mccartney's impersonal performative journal but i had fun. vibes

I mean, Paul can write a catchy melody in his sleep, and this record is mostly him just spinning them out without developing them into full songs. He reuses some stuff (the riff from You Never Give Me Your Money, for example). So... while this is never an unpleasant listen, it never feels essential (outside of Maybe I'm Amazed). Can see how this could feel like a major stepdown coming out of The Beatles, but from this distance, it just seems like a standard spin-off solo record. Sketches that weren't good enough for the band but he still wanted to get out there. If only they had the precedent to follow to let them all do their thing for a bit while keeping the band together. Oh well.

Done paying the beatle tax. No more peer pressure to give higher points for anything to do with this group. Making a short album with instrumentals and fragments of ideas for songs is nice and all but not memorable. If anything it is more of what Paul brought to his previous project for those people who could never get enough of that. Maybe that also explains the strange state and timing of this album. Musically it is fine, just fine. Another point of contention: Indie is short for independent. Specifically from the established industry. if you are part of the biggest band of that time, there's nothing indie about that.

Favorite songs: Every Night, Junk, Teddy Boy, Singalong Junk, Maybe I'm Amazed

3/5 Didn't stand out. I liked Junk, though.

I'm not much of a Beatles fan and even less so of any of the members' solo projects. I mean, I like a single here and there, but the vast majority of their stuff does absolutely nothing for me. The album should be called "Maybe I'm Amazed and Other Songs." This album was on the good side of OK. Some interesting melodies and he obviously knows how to put together a song; I actually enjoyed the instrumentals the most. Not a ton to say about this record, Paul McCartney tunes are fine. 3/5

My least favourite Beatle and this does not really change my view. I quite like the demo/bagginess and that many tracks sound like discarded Beatles out takes.

I think Macca is a great guy, unfortunately I think this album is very average. I really think that, if it wasn't for THE Paul McCartney, nobody would care about this album. I was going to give it a 2 but Maybe I'm Amazed just pushed it into "average" territory.

This definitely sounds like Paul McCartney’s first foray after the Beatles. It feels like he’s recording music he wanted to do as a Beatle, ideas he didn’t get to, messing around in a studio with artificially lowered expectations. Some tracks are better than others for sure. It would have benefited from a producer-as-editor to reign in the filler songs and outtakes. “Maybe I’m Amazed” is great, signaling what’s to come. I’m not sure why it made the 1001 albums list. It’s fine, albeit completely unremarkable.

I’m not overly familiar with Paul McCartney’s work before Wings but this is a solid effort 😂 Seriously, I enjoyed it and unsurprisingly the bass line is spot on but overall it left me a little flat. McCartney is an all time great but this album is only good not great IMO

The intimate, unpolished feel of this record caught me off-guard. We had this album in my house when I was a child, and I remember the beautiful album artwork so vividly, but I have absolutely no recollection of anyone actually playing it on the stereo. The only song on here I was familiar with was Maybe I'm Amazed. Even after watching the McCartney documentary this winter I still could not dredge up any associations with it when I went to listen to it. Some of the songs on here, especially some of the instrumentals, seemed like they were going to irritate me, but then eventually I would get caught by one of his hooks. Damn the man but he is crafty that way. This record doesn't really feel finished to me but maybe that's part of its charm. I will definitely listen to this album again, but I might skip a couple tracks.

I feel a bit sorry for Paul. Just not as cool as the other ones. Clearly important to the Beatles sound, but then had to try and sound different. Some of this sounds like an acoustic set of cuts from the white album. Not awful, but not great

This is OK, but an immediate indicator that McCartney without the Beatles lacks magic. Maybe I'm Amazed is a classic, and I do love that this was all done by Macca on a four track, but it's fairly inessential overall.

He does a lot of this

Okay album, but not his best work.

Context is key, right? As the diary of a break-up of the biggest band on the planet, it's a fascinating listen. But it veers between great tunes and half-finished cast-offs. A cathartic necessity perhaps, an intriguing moment in time, but only half a great album.

Very unique. Singalong Junk and Kreen-Akrore were my favorites. Calm and idk felt very natural. 6.4/10

McCartney albums are such a mixed bag, there are some great songs here and some forgettable.

Compared to Lennon’s solo debut this one is at least listenable.

One great song and a bunch of half-baked demos do not make for a must-listen album. Maybe a die-hard fan could find some insight into Macca's process, but anyone with ears can tell that he has made much better music.

The perfect example of “it’s fine”. Like what about this album screams I must hear this before I die? This is just more Brit/Beatles bias.

I would almost rather listen to Yoko

Kind of boring for McCartney

Felt like a collection of half-baked song ideas. Nice to listen to for the bass lines

An overall 3, pleasant enough. Maybe I'm Amazed is great song though

i love Paul.

McCartney feels half-finished. Yet it is Paul McCartney making the music after all, and it is predictably melodic.

Very scattered listening to this album. It reminds me of someone trying to find their voice after being part of a major band. 5/10 Top song Maybe I'm amazed

Pretty forgettable album for the most part, tbh. I expected something better than this

Okay album. Might be worth a re-listen.

mooi album, maar misschien wel misbaar

fine...

Paul McCartney has always been my favorite Beatle, and yet I’m incapable of getting excited about his solo/Wings work. “Maybe I’m Amazed” is maybe his best post-Beatles song but it feels so out of place on this album. The rest of the songs are at best fine and at worst just him lazily leaning into his most immediate impulses. I am so not opposed to albums that feel like demos or sketches. But maybe the reason some of these ideas weren’t fleshed out is because there's just no “there” there.

I honestly can’t believe this is the same Paul McCartney that wrote Blackbird and Yesterday. There’s glimpses of greatness here, but it really just lacks the thing that makes The Beatles special. And like it’s not bad, he’s still very talented, but I don’t get why you’d listen to this when you could just listen to The Beatles instead. Favorites: The Lovely Linda, Teddy Boy, Maybe I’m Amazed

As a young lad and a Beatle fanatic I was completely traumatised and at a loss as to how life would carry on after The Beatles broke up. My mood was not really improved by what I had heard from The Plastic Ono Band and then this solo effort from Paul. In fairness I was judging these against the excellence of Abbey Road and that was never going to be bettered. There’s a couple of tracks on this album which could have graced a Beatle album but in the main it is a mish mash of random songs some of which sound unfinished. It was perhaps an album Paul had to make at the beginning of his solo career to learn the skills which were to be so important in his Wings future. It’s an album significant in the circumstances of when, why and how it was released rather than its musical content and worth. 3/5 7/5/26

saved it all for "maybe i'm amazed" and the rest was just kind of there 3.5

I was fully prepared to dislike this one given I'm not a fan of the Beatles, but this was perfectly fine. The unpolished/unfinished nature holds it back from being full-on good, but it wasn't bad. "Maybe I'm Amazed" holds up. 3.2

Is this a good album? Yeah, I think so but I don't really enjoy it that much. Maybe I'm Amazed is great, but the rest is kind of vanilla. I think what this album shows more than anything else is that whatever the Beatles had together is what made the music great. Not saying that McCartney on his own wasn't brilliant, but you can't listen to this and not compare it to anything the Beatles did. So objectively I think this would be like a 4/5 but for my enjoyment it's probably like 2.5/5. We'll agree to settle in the middle and call it 3/5.

Even half-baked Macca ideas are still hummable. Not the greatest work by the recently ex-Beatle, but not terrible. A lot of song ideas are not well thought out - it's like trying to create a one-man Abbey Road medley. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is still a fantastic love song.

Basically just feels like an early Beatles album. It's fine, and there are some good hooks here, but not much feels all that unique. Favorite Song: Oo You, Maybe I'm Amazed

I thought this was a pretty nice listen. I'll probably come back to it and give it another shot later on to see if I still feel the same way.

Like his entire post Beatles career, this album shows he could still write some of the most amazing songs ever—Maybe I’m Amazed. But without have to compete with the others for space on the album, there is a lot of filler.

I think I liked it more than I'm rating it, but the Blues muddy the blend a bit.

Not his best work, I think. Maybe I'm Amazed is a classic though.

An interesting sketchbook, but nothing great emerges. Paul is capable of writing truly dreadful songs, and these are not them, but do yourself a favor and listen to Ram instead.

I would take less offense to this if Ram (the infinitely superior Paul solo album) was on the list

Overall, this was an alright album to leave in the background. Definitely nothing too exciting, but it was pretty chill instead.

"Baby I'm Amazed" is one of the great songs of all time. Hard to get very excited or proclaim the genius at work in much of the rest of this. Paul's solo work comes across as very self-indulgent a lot of the time, and this is a good example of that.

too boring personally

From Neil Young’s speech introducing Paul McCartney at his hall of fame induction….“So I started a solo career, at the same time that Paul came out with his first solo album, the one on Apple records with ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’. I love that record because it was so simple and there was so much to see and to hear. But at the same time it was just Paul, so there was no adornment at all. There was no echo, there was no attempt made to compete with the things that he had already done. So he stepped from the shadow of The Beatles and there he was. It kind of blew my mind.” I liked this more than I thought I would. I was never a fan of McCartney’s solo work I had heard on the radio, with the exception of Maybe I’m Amazed. This album is simplistic but I thought it was far more interesting than the pop heavy sound of his 80’s stuff. The stripped down feel made it more engaging for me. 3.5 stars.

bedroom pop: origins

A few gems in here but overall feels like an album that was rushed. Really love "Maybe I'm Amazed" but the rest of the album never comes close to the highs of this track.

This seems a bit sacrilegious but I found this album pretty uninspiring. If you would have told me this was Beatles B sides...Baby I'm Amazed comes through at the end to save this from utter mediocrity but otherwise, give me the whole Beatles or even Wings...

Have always loved the song maybe I'm amazed.

De los Stones ayer a Polma hoy. Está bueno el álbum. Mete algo de experimentación. Está interesante. Y él es un genio. Un carisma espectacular. 6/10

Very nice, very beatlesy. I honestly couldn't tell that the album had been recorded in his house, with home-recording equipment. I definitely felt a bit of roughness to it, but I genuinely liked it. Favorite songs: Teddy Boy, That Would be Something,Every Night

Listened Before? N Interesting story with this album. Good for him trying to find his own sound during a difficult time. Unfortunately for him, the best songs on this record are the ones that sound the most like beatles songs. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Junk

McCartney is one of those cases where he's best in a band where he can be contained a bit. (Beatles/Wings)

Kree-Akrore should have been the first song

Raw Paul from near the end of the Beatle's run. I would say this album offers more in terms of the lore surrounding it than the music itself, but there's some decent cuts in here.

Wasn't anything special.

Decent 3,5

I felt like this is how the 70's felt. Like this is its sound. I love the creativity this man has for music, like each song feel like a different beat.

Quite mellow. Easy to listen to. Would listen to again when trying to relax or getting stuff done on my laptop. A jazzy vibe which would've gone down nicely with a glass of wine.

Nice in genereal

Honestly so much better than i was expecting.

Ayy ay ay ehmmm me llevo un like, que decirte! Nota: 2.9

Pretty disappointing. Given the name behind this, it should be much better.

good songwriting but sonically very boring

167/1001 First listen. That guy from the band that did all those amazing things musically before anyone else. Not much amazing going on here though. Would this music even be on the list if it wasn’t this guy making it? I mean it’s okay but what’s the big deal? He did play just about every note himself so That’s pretty cool I guess. 5/10

That’s definitely a Paul McCartney album.

This feels like it is on here just because it is Paul McCartney. It's not bad, but is it something I HAVE to listen to before I die? Probably not. 3 stars.

Such a short album with short songs it feels more like a notebook of ideas.

Crazy shit from the quoted music critics on Wikipedia. I guess this is the album that is thought to have sealed the Beatles breakup but it's not THE reason, geeze. Anyway, I thought it was good. Doesn't reach what I would consider the dizzying heights of polish and coherence that Band on the Run would years later with the Wings, but Paul McCartney is still a phenomenal songwriter and that ability shines through pretty often on this record. I don't think the instrumentals did it any favors, they're not up to snuff with the rest because he isn't the greatest multi-instrumentalist in the world. But songs like Junk, Maybe I'm Amazed and Teddy Boy really bring this one through. I don't mind the unpolished sound, though. It's a style choice and I think it works out fine if you keep that in mind.

Seems like mister McCartney was still searching for himself outside the Beatles

yueerfangsong

This is a 2.5 rounded up. I can't be doing with the whole "anything one of The Beatles touches must be worshipped" mentality. The first few tracks are repetitive messes, and many others are forgettable, but there are some good songs later on. Personally my standout was 'Momma Miss America' an atmospheric, heavyish rock track with forward momentum and a very nice guitar sound, but 'Man We Was Lonely' and 'Maybe I'm Amazed' are good too. The generator gave me George Harrison's All Things Must Pass a while ago, and I liked that album much, much better.

Pretty fun listen, haven't listened to Paul McCartney so it was all new experience. Nothing outstanding but definetly not bad either.

Highlights Momma Miss America Maybe I'm Amazed Most of the songs here blended together but there were some notable psychadelic tracks here and there. If this used to be pop I should have been born in the 50s.... Low 3

I found this a bit boring. Maybe it was the mood I was in at the time.

One of those albums where the most popular song is actually the best song on the album.

Not bad, but nothing really amazing.

Mamma, kan vi få Beatles? Vi har Beatles hjemme. Beatles hjemme: Men selv Beatles hjemme er helt greit. Noe av det er faktisk ganske bra. Men det er også en del som er ganske dårlig...? Tror jeg liker det bedre enn Band on the Run.
