Just kind of drift through with no real standouts
Pretty mid with the exception of Maybe I’m Amazed. For a Paul McCartney album, I didn’t find it too interesting. Nice background music though.
ok
235/1089 okay this has a great cover the music is decent too, quite different from The Beatles in a way? i was expecting more whimsy but i like this style fave: Maybe I’m Amazed 64/100
A good album, I liked Hot As Sun/Glasses and Man We Was Lonely the most.
Chill tunes
This was a solid album with some blues rock elements as well as some folk elements. I enjoyed the songs that leaned into the rock side of things more than the folk leaning ones. I thought they were more interesting and stood out to me. The folk leaning songs were meh in my opinion but I think the majority of songs leaned more towards the positive side of the spectrum.
Did not resonate with me; no song felt truly memorable.
Meh... One decent song, but that's about it on this one.
I usually am pretty versatile but this album didn’t have any outstanding songs for me.
While nothing here was particularly to my taste it did teach me one thing My dislike of the Beatles should be pointed at John Lennon more than Paul McCartney because Paul on his own is pretty ok
how to call this one.. pop rock for sure, but a lot of creativity to be sure. Could easily be the beatles, billy joel, etc. Overall kinda boring? Sure it was influential. Maybe I'm Amazed the winner, ofc. 3/5.
Truthfully I think this is better than quite a few Beatles LP’s of the Beatles LP’s, a lot of it is pretty throwaway but I think there is enough good stuff to make it a solid album. In Momma Miss America the influence on so many songs in the last 40 years is clear, the baseline and drums sound fresh today. I think this album is a good example of Paul McCartney in general he can write a banger likeLive and Let Die one minute and total dross likeWild Honey Pie the next - he is prolific, occasionally sublime but lacks filter… I don’t dislike this album. 3.1
There are no bad songs on this album and I'd even go as far to say I enjoyed it, but there's something about Paul McCartney's solo stuff that gives me the ick sometimes. It's sort of safe, centrist dad music. Fine if that's what you're into, but it makes me want to go out and buy some smack and share a needle with a hooker. 3.8
There's a pleasingly intimate air to this, and some genuinely good tracks on side 2, but for the most part it feels like a might have been, a collection of unfocused musical ideas that needed more development and coherence. It's still better than most of McCartney's work with Wings. I'm glad I heard it though. I learned this was a landmark record that essentially heralded the breakup of the Beatles to the world, although Lennon had already jumped ship in private. In the tracks you can heard both McCartney transitioning from his Beatles work to a solo artist, and the transition between the styles of the late 60s and early 70s. So it's kind of an interesting listen, even if it's musically confused.
Heard lovely Linda and I said oh no. This is gonna suck. It didn’t suck. Maybe I’m amazed is so great. Lovely Linda isn’t. Rest of it was good. What else is there possible to say.
Okay album. Some beautiful tracks and some basic ones with the distinct sound of McCartney's guitar and vocals.
It was interesting. I enjoyed it for the most part.
it was mid
Best album from a beatles member thus far, still pure mid tho
Fine album that left me no thoroughly without any real impression
The first half of the album is really weak and forgettable. There's some good stuff in the tail end, though, which does go some way to making up for it. I love The Beatles, but so many of the solo projects are lacking in comparison, and this is no exception.
This doesn't feel like it has a clear identity as an album beyond being a "sessions" album. Maybe I'm amazed is outstanding. I think if it was any other artist this would not have been a full or finished album. Reading the background, it was clearly important for McCartney to do to process the breaking up of the Beatles.
Pleasant simple songs
Released just before Let It Be, this is a bit more rough and ready than a Beatles album, which isn’t a bad thing. It gives a fascinating insight into Paul’s songwriting process and sounds fresh and in the moment. Released in the modern era it might be described more like a mixtape than an album, but it’s nice to hear him play around without overly refining.
McCartney is not a great album. In fact, compared with Plastic Ono Band and, especially, All Things Must Pass, Paul's first post-Beatles offering is very poor indeed. There is still quality of course - it's Paul McCartney - but the decision, possibly due to depression following the breakup, to record largely at home, leads to an album that sounds like demos recorded at home... The Atmos mix cleans things up a bit but even some of the real drums sound like they are played on a suitcase or cardboard box. There are too many throwaway songs and fragments - "Lovely Linda", "Man We Was Something" - and average instrumentals. Even the better known songs like "Junk" and "Teddy Boy" are below average compositions that failed to make the cut for the White Album. "Every Night" is slightly better, "Glasses" could have developed into something interestingly Avantgarde instead of a tacked on coda to "Hot As Sun". Then we have "Maybe I'm Amazed" which might be McCartney's best song without the other Fab 3. It deserves to be in better company.
I haven't listened to much of Paul McCartney's non-Beatles work outside of the Wings, slightly curious about this one. This is a somewhat predictably stripped-down production (he is only one man after all). As a result, it's pretty direct and even a little charming. People are calling this the first indie rock album, which could be true, but I think Paul was just simply faffing around and wanting to do his own thing in secrecy here.
3.7
After listening to this one through several times, and knowing that Paul McCartney is an undeniable music legend, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit the only tracks that really caught my attention were "Maybe I'm Amazed" - the passion is intoxicating - and "The Lovely Linda", which was just kinda fun, kinda weird. Beyond that this was fine background music. *shrug*
I had a much better appreciation for Sir Paul, this work, and this time period after watching the “Man on the Run” documentary. Pretty amazing he does this by himself after the juggernaut of the Beatles. A couple songs I love and that are timeless. It is a strong 7/10 but not quite thick enough to round up. 3.5/5
This was a tweener for me. I’m all for a dude just pushing play on his 4-track recorder to capture songs. And so the stripped down non-polished result is a cool opposite to what the Beatles were doing leading up to this. But that being said, some of these tracks are really just that…ideas or improvised blips. Still, I can appreciate what Paul was going for here and the story surrounding its release makes it that much more interesting. 3.5/5.
You definitely need to have the background/context to appreciate this one. While you might appreciate the stripped down nature of it, I think it’s also hard to say that the album isn’t pretty lacking. I’m a huge Paul fan but this is not him at his best, clearly.
I like sir Paul a lot. One of the best song writers of his lifetime (ever?). Maybe I’m Amazed is an incredible song. The rest of this is….good. 3.5 but rounding down because I wanted something more.
lovely linda top 5 beatles songs ahh das isch DAS album hahaha s albumcover isch seehr geil de ahfang vo hot as sun isch cool! momma miss america isch GEIL s klavieeer mmh het mega spass gmacht vo maybe I'm amazed hanimer chli meh erhofft iwie? aso es isch cool aber han glaub z grossi erwartige gha oke hans nomal glost, es isch schona cool joaaa hetmi nöd so überzügt, au wenn ich de lo-fi na cool find
it's a pretty decent album. Easy to put on and let play. Flows really well. It's just not particularly remarkable to me. I think some of the 4s and 5s are really leaning on the artist rather than the album.
Quite a fun listen!
Paul McCartney is a legendary songwriter which makes this unfinished mess all the more confusing
7/10
This is a very strange album. It is full of a bunch of song fragments that feel unfinished or under baked. Nothing here is bad, but nothing here really blew me away either. Maybe I'm Amazed is thr only song here that feels like a full song. Mid 3.
Musical genius
The Beatles split up in 1970 and then McCartney quickly put this out. There's hardly anything here that is good enough to threaten a place on a Beatles album, in fact you have to wait until near the end 'Maybe I'm Amazed' which has a Side 2 of Abbey Roadness to it and was one of his finest post-Beatles songs. Elsewhere a lot of this is quite twee and pedestrian, sentimental silliness without the songwriting prowess and some passable instrumentals. Better stuff would come.
No tämä on beatlesia ilman kolmea muuta. Ihan kivaa menoa ja hyviä soundeja
I'd give this a 3.5. As a lot of people complained about when it was released, it feels like a lot of demos or unfinished ideas. I do appreciate the starkness and the early lo-fi / "bedroom recording" / "indie sound" nature of the album, and there are some good songs, but most of it is pretty forgettable.

Hyvä levy. Pitää kuunnella uudestaan. 3,25/5.
Another album, similar to a number I've had recently, where there's a small number of very good tracks, and then the remainder is either average or dog-shit. There was nothing on here that was terrible, but nothing to write home about either.
🥇maybe i’m amazed 🥈oo you 🥉momma miss america HM: every night, junk, teddy boy
lol
Definitely an interesting listen. Some songs sound half-finished but I kinda liked that. It felt like a glimpse into Paul McCartney songwriting process.
Decent solo debut
McCartney is a "handmade" and intimate palate cleanser that successfully washes away the noise of previous days, even if it lacks long-term "lasting power." at least me Personally. Paul’s performance is impressive—a true display of "one-man band" musicianship where he handles every instrument with a raw, "unpolished" charm. While tracks like the "triumphant" "Maybe I'm Amazed" stand out as immaculate highlights, much of the LP feels like a collection of casual sketches rather than a cohesive "body of work." It is a great, gentle listening experience for the moment, but it doesn't quite "unlock" the urge for repeat listens. A solid 3/5 that serves as a high-quality "home-cooked" detour.
I prefer McCartney's songs with the Beatles over his solo work. "McCartney" is a pretty good album and a nice solo debut. I love how simple some songs on this album are, like "Junk". However, some songs on "McCartney" sound like demos. Paul is the third Beatle I've reviewed on this website. (Ringo isn't on the 1001 albums list, I think) 3 stars for "McCartney".
Maybe I'm Amazed is a great song. The rest of the album was OK at best. So I'll say 2.5 - round up.
Couple of decent tracks - neat that it's lo-fi, but nothing too too special.
A very ok album containing a couple of the best post-Beatles tracks by any of them.
I enjoyed it except for the parts where the white boy got a lil bluesy with it.
very pleasant
I'm a big Beatles fan in general. I have over 100 of their songs liked on Spotify which puts them as my #2 artist overall in terms of song count. I also went and saw Paul in concert in 2025 - mostly because I figured it might be the last time I could see a Beatle live. So, of course, I am very familiar with Paul McCartney. But I never really got into his solo or Wings stuff that much. Yes I was aware of his radio hits and like some of them - and strongly dislike some of them too - so I never felt compelled to do a deep dive into his solo work. It usually felt like his solo stuff was missing the other band members to say "hey, that's crap, lets do this or let's add something to that". I feel the same way about most of the output of any of the solo Beatles. I'd say the sum of the Beatles was usually greater than the individual parts. So, this is the first time I've ever sat down and listened to this one front to back. I think it's kinda cool that instead of trying to compete with the complex production style of the Beatles he just went in the opposite direction and did a DIY type album. The standout track is "Maybe I'm Amazed" - which is a great song, and the one on this album that seems like he put the most time and effort into. "Every Night" is cool too. I like the anti-consumerism sentiment and simple mellowness of "Junk". I enjoy the instrumentals "Valentine Day" and "Momma Miss America" and "Singalong Junk" - and have added all of them to my Instrumentals playlist. The rest didn't grab me and I really didn't like "That Would Be Something" where he sounds like he's trying to be Elvis. I kinda liked the drumming on Kreen-Akrore - but after repeated listens there were parts of it that made me realize I wouldn't really want to hear it again. Liked songs on Spotify: 6/13 Rating: 3/5
I like the album, but it doesn’t have the same magic as the Beatles’ albums
i was not overly impressed with this sorry Paul
Did you know ow this guy was in The Beatles? Me. Neither. I can't imagine being a fan of The Beatles and the expectations you would have for Paul and he comes out with this album. Enjoyable lo fi DIY departure from the studio maverick Beatles.
I enjoyed this more than expected. Misses the pros and cons, the interplay of the Beatles, but still good.
Did not help with maths revision, not that I care it was fine
Good album overall, most of the songs were nice yet not entirely 'interesting' at least in that I was able to study through them without thinking to much about the song that was playing. My favourites of the album were 'Man we was lonely', 'Momma Miss America', which had some nice guitar and 'Maybe I'm amazed' perhaps being the best one, with some nice vocals and upbeat instruments. I didn't quite 'get' the last song, a lot of it sounded like a band preparing their instruments to play a set. I think it's a shame that the first Beatles and Paul McCartney albums I've had have both been rated a 3, they've been pretty good, and both are higher threes but neither have been consistently great enough to make them fours, hopefully the next ones will improve on that. 68/100 Score edited 28/01/26
It was okay. Some good, most mediocre. Very much a 3. I think I enjoyed listening to it at the time but thinking back there was nothing I liked that much
Haven't heard this before. Very different than other solo McCartney and Wings, but I'm glad I listened to it.
A solid 3/5. There's plenty to like in here, but it is a bit rough around the edges.
McCartney - for me - is a musically phenomenon. He (in contrast to Lennon) seems not to be able to create real bad music. Even a stripped down album like this one is almost quite catchy. Weak three stars for his solo-debut. worst: "Kreen-Akrore" 2,5
Standouts Momma Miss America Maybe I'm Amazed
Preferred him in the Beatles
6/10
Jingle-jangle
I had more fun learning the Beatles lore surrounding this album than I did actually listening to it. It was fine and perfectly average - the definition of a 3 star
You can tell that Sir McCartney was still trying to find himself as a solo act. Nothing wrong with that but it confused me as a listener which took me out of the listening experience a bit. But there’s enough good songs for it to be a solid project.
2.5 stars. Debut solo worked that was rushed to release. "Every Night" and "Maybe I'm Amazed" are really good but otherwise lots of under-produced unfinished songs that end abruptly.
An album that feels incredibly slight until you get to Maybe I'm Amazed as the penultimate track, which hits like a lightning bolt and makes the entire album worthwhile.
Decent effort, particularly side 2
Despite owning this album on vinyl, I had never listened before today ( I blame the terrible cover). I was ready to dislike it as I have recently developed an allergy to McCartney’s corny persona and too cute songs, firmly believing his instincts are best when tempered by collaborators of equal status (though I do love Ram). To my surprise, McCartney the album is an exercise in restraint, showcasing the best of Paul’s whimsy and playfulness. The songs are lo-fi sketches that evoke a fling in the countryside, never overworked or overstaying their welcome, like a pastoral Guided By Voices album. I especially appreciate the instrumental tracks. And in case you’re worried it’s all filler, ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ rounds out the record in triumphant form. Favorite song: Valentine Day
More bluesy than I expected. Maybe I'm Amazed is one of my favorite songs. And McCartney beat boxes?
I like the songs and has some different ideas compared to usual Will I listen to again: 50%
Is this his best music? No Is this a great album? No Is this a good album? Yes As much as I love Paul McCartney, I have to give this one a 3.
Decent.
6/10
One of my less liked of the solo albums
He’s done better obviously but it’s fine
Alright, I get it. He made this album all by himself at an emotionally tumultuous point in his life. Still, it is not fair to let the behind the scenes of an album influence the rating. The way I have been approaching this is to rate it strictly based on how much I enjoy it, how much I like the songs, and nothing else. So, based solely on my music taste, I do not find anything particularly special about it. I enjoy some parts here and there, but I cannot bring myself to give this a 4. However, for once I can understand the reasoning behind including a specific album. It is Paul’s debut and marks the end of the Beatles, so I think this album has earned its place. Although, since there are so many Beatles albums on this list, I am sure the author did not have my reasoning and was just thinking, YES YES INCLUDE EVERYTHING THEY MADE AS A BAND AND IN THEIR SOLO CAREERS.
Quality control not high in this album but when it hits the mark it really does. Every night is wistful but stunning. Teddy boy was a beatles castoff but could have been on the white album, that was a lot of young fathers song to their children. Maybe im amazed remains peerless, from beginning to end one of the truly great love songs. Unfortunately there is a lot of detritus to wade through.
McCartney was the key driver for the Beatles. This album is decidedly not Beatles-like. Feels like a cobbled together set of tunes that weren't worthy of passing by John. Lennon, like Paul struggled without his partner but came out of the gate with a little more to say. Paul picked up his game with Wings but this album is sleepy.
It lacked substance
Pretty fun
A few great songs, the rest should be more fleshed out. 3.5 stars
I'm not as McCartney pilled as a lot of people. I don't actually mind the lo-fi aspect of it, but I do think a lot of the songs come across as sort of half-assed. I do think there's some really good stuff here, especially "Every Night" and "Maybe I'm Amazed", but it's not in the same league as McCartney's best stuff -- either with or without the Beatles. 3.5 stars.
3.5
Made just after the fallout from a bitterly bitter bitterest of Beatles break ups, this here McCartney solo debut represents a sort of cherry phoenix rising from the squished and violated life bowl of cherries as well as a signal of a newly contented career and family life. It is a seriously cool, quirky, folky, lo-fi vibe starting off lovingly with the lovely Lovely Linda song fragment before eventually drifting to other chirpy, delicate, gold nugget half-songage such as Junk and Man We Was Lonely. It is overall a slightly frustrating listen because it is all pretty formless and there are lots of rough phases that you have to sift through to get to the occasional genius bits. There is one absolute shining diamond on the album which is the all-powerful piano power ballad Maybe I’m Amazed but it’s then followed by twiddly experimental drum jam Kreen-Akrore which is the kreen-akrappiest album closer imaginable. Overall a mixed folky lo-fi bag. 3.5 stars.
Sounds like 1/4 of a Beatles album. Like an unfinished cake. A lot of the ingredients are there, but it's missing what makes it special. The biggest exception being Maybe I'm Amazed which is such a really solid track. The rest is... meh.
Yes, it's raw, but there's still good songwriting and melodies on this. 3.0/5.0: Good
paul is a pleasure to listen to and a great songwriter. that said, these songs are fine but there arent really any standout songs on here. other than the fact that it was pauls first solo album and was recorded during the breakup of the beatles there isnt much notable about this album
paul mccartney
A nice little album that is a beautiful time capsule to early love.
Alveg hugljúft. Nær samt ekki yfir þristinn. Sorry Palli, þú átt alveg nóg af fimmum.
Látlaust og fínt en engar rósir nema Maybe Im amazed.
Some really good stuff in here. Maybe I’m Amazed would have probably been the next hit single for the Beatles had history gone a different way. This album def gets a bonus point for its homegrown, throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks approach (which is made all the more cool considering he could have recorded in any studio he wanted), but unfortunately there is a bit too much filler in here for me. Valentine’s Day, Hot as Sun/Glasses, and even the album closer all just feel like filler to me when I know Paul had more songs in his back pocket. This is a cool record but it does fall a bit short for me.
Not bad.
Extremely uneven. Album Art 4/5
I guess this wasn't the worst album we've heard so far. It definitely wasn't the best, either. I'd call it a solid C effort from our erstwhile ex-Beattle. And, while I was listening to it, I renamed each of the songs to capture my impression of them. Track 1: Nothingburger Track 2: Wanker's Delight Track 3: The Wanker Wanks Tonight Track 4: Fade to Beige Track 5: Hold my Organ/I'm Having a Sad Track 6: Still Beige, Part 1 Track 7: Exhuming Ernest Tubb Track 8: Not Quite Lola Track 9: Whammy Ba...Hey, What? Track 10: Theodore Gave a Little Bit Track 11: Still Beige, Part 2 Track 12: Lieutenant Peeper's Lament Track 13: Cthulu Ate My Tabs
I liked this just fine. Enjoyed a couple songs in particular I had never heard including Every Night. I feel like two solo Paul McCartney albums is at least one to many, but I would take three albums if it meant I didn’t have to slog through Linkin Park. I’m preparing myself for the Lennon solo records. I know it’s coming.
This has one total powerhouse (Maybe I'm Amazed, probably McCartney's best non-Beatles song apart from Live and Let Die). The rest is pretty listenable but none of it really stuck with me.
Pretty nice actually, not sure about the beatboxing though
very brave of Paul McCartney to do a Paul McCartney parody
His remarkable gift for melody is apparent in every track, but these mostly seem like nuggets more than fully developed songs; Paul finding his footing right after the Beatles. Still very good. 3.5.
Kinda stripped back. But nice
Solid album. Two amazing songs and the rest are average or throw away.
70s rock. Solo debut, lo-fi and casual. Caused stir because done in secret, credited for furthering band break up. The laid-back approach feels spontaneous and sweet. Sketches and ideas of songs.
i can understand both the hate and the love this album gets. i'm not a beatle fanatic, but i have listened to all their albums multiple times - but, i've never checked out the solo stuff yet. This is not as good as a beatles album. many of the songs do sound just like sketches. There's a charm in that though, but the timing was bad. This feels like something Paul would have put out BEFORE becoming a beatle. And maybe that's kind of what he was doing: going back in time, trying to find what it was like before being a super star.
It's not the Beatles, but it's not bad.
If bipolar were an album standard, this one nails it. You get a sharp track like "Junk" sitting right next to something as forgettable as "Valentine Day". The writing swings from sharp to straight FIRE like "Talk like a baby golly golly golly golly goo-goo-ah". The cover is the real standout. Clean photography, strong idea. Then you hit "Kreen-Akrore" and wonder what Paul was thinking. The highs are real highs. The lows tank hard. Still lands at a steady 7.5/10.
It's fair to say that non of the former Beatles got off to a flying start with any of their solo work. John's was all over the place, George's was experimental nonsense, and Ringo's was exactly what you expect - shite. Paul went for a low-fi approach, hiding away by himself and doing it all. The result is mostly half-baked and lacking in the melody and charm the great man is known for. It's a forgettable album which deserves its inclusion here purely because of who made it and not the quality within. There are thousands of better albums than this, but it has to be here because it's the first solo McCartney album. It's not bad, it's just average across the board.
Ah, another post-Beatles album from Paul McCartney! It feels like just yesterday I was rating/reviewing Band on the Run… oh wait. Honestly, McCartney’s debut solo album is nothing to write home about. He wrote much better songs before & after this and it’s not a particular interesting shift away from the Beatles either. It’s just fine. A lot of my favorite tracks weirdly ended up being the shorter instrumental cuts that are peppered throughout the tracklist – they just hit a sweet spot for me compositionally that the others rarely do. Still excited to dig further into the Beatles’ discography (as well as any notable solo work from the other members), but I’ve got a slightly worse impression of McCartney’s music after listening through this one. Band on the Run is still great though! Highlights: Valentine Day, Hot as Sun / Glasses, Junk, Oo You, Momma Miss America, Singalong Junk, Maybe I’m Amazed
One song sounded like a disco elysium song
Can’t help but compare this to Lennon’s and Harrison’s post-Beatles solo efforts - this doesn’t feel as cohesive as those, seeming more like some truly great songs that hadn’t been polished enough. Having said that, even half-baked ideas from McCartney are streets ahead of many artists so it’s far from a bad album, just not a brilliant one
listen to ram. this album isnt bad really, its just kinda whatever besides the fantastic song junk. everything he tries here he does way better on ram. just listen to ram.
Although I am familiar with quite a few Paul McCartney albums, I don't really know this album very well. Although it does have Maybe I'm Amazed, this album is mostly forgettable. It has its moments, sure, but overall it's pretty uneven. While this is not a bad album, I doubt I would come back to this one.
These mostly felt like sketches of songs rather than a fully fleshed-out album, "Maybe I'm Amazed" excepted.
Really wholesome and cute but not that finished
A BIT TOO SLOW FOR ME BUT NICE MUSIC.
Paul is a tremendous songwriter, but this LoFi album has a very rough feel to it.
Ram > McCartney
Back in the late 80s/early 90s I saw McCartney play at Wembley Arena. I'm not a fan particularly, but the woman who's now my wife is and, well, it's not too often you got to see someone of that stature play live. I don't remember much about the gig – it was quite cheesy in places I think, which seems par for the course – although he almost certainly played Maybe I'm Amazed, the only song on this album that I've heard before. As an album this is OK without particularly inspiring me in any way. I quite enjoyed it and in some ways it seems sort of timeless – it doesn't feel like this was released in 1970 and there's not too much weird stuff on here. I doubt I'd seek it out to listen to again, but if it came up randomly that'd be fine.
This is a bunch of ideas Paul McCartney had so he put them in an album Some of them are good
what a weird hodgepodge. you can tell he a good songwriter but its so thrown together at the last minute kinda vibes
A half baked album with one all timer.
dare i say it was very non-commercial beatles-esque. also i didn't fully understand the overall vibe
Well that was an album featuring Paul McCartney. One of the first published wife guys it seems.
this was a strange listen-felt like it was just a random studio session, just fiddling around with ideas. THEN you get to Maybe I'm Amazed-what great track. did all the work go into that 1 track?? rest of the album is very forgettable-sad since Maybe is such a great one.
kinda forgettable
Look, McCartney is my favourite Beatle. I'd pretend to be cooler and say George Harrison, who I think is the default pick to pretend you aren't selecting the obvious choice (Lennon) or being a contrarian (Starr). But I love Paul's voice and he wrote my favourite Beatles songs (Lady Madonna and Fool On The Hill). However... I do not see the point of multiple tracks on this album and I think it gets a pass solely because of who he is. I have absolutely no issue with the lo-fi recording style or Linda doing backing vocals, but some of these tracks barely count as songs. There is no reason for The Lovely Linda to be an actually recorded song on an album released by a man who was in the biggest band in the world at the time. That's not to say that I dislike the entirety of this album, not at all. I like a lot of the songs, but the idea that people are out there rating this 5/5 is incomprehensible to me. 3/5
I really believe Paul McCartney is the most talented Beatle. Of the post-breakup solo albums that have come up for me so far on this list, this had been my favourite. He's just quite good at writing catchy hooks. The guitar and bass parts on this album are pretty good, and it's varied enough to be interesting without seeming all over the place. Still no tracks that really stood out to me, but if I'm honest I wasn't in the mood to pay close attention when I was listening to this
Very different than anything Paul ever recorded with The Beatles. Definitely not better, as it felt a bit unfinished. Most songs were very short and it made the album feel a bit all over the place.
Not worth breaking up the Beatles for.
Fine! “Maybe I’m Amazed” is a pretty good tune. Neat that that the album was pretty “DIY” but also sad that it hastened The Beatles’ breakup.
"Maybe I'm amazed", einer der besten Songs ever.
We get it dude, you love your wife! Not my favorite macca, but it's still macca. Feels pretty disjointed throughout, but the highs are nice and high. The story and context surrounding Paul and the Beatles at the time is more interesting than the record itself, but it all adds to the album's lore and it does deserve some reverence. Highlights: Every Night, Oo You, Maybe I'm Amazed Skips: Junk, Teddy Boy, the first two minutes of Kreen-Akrore
shut up and play the hooks! Enjoyable, though not nearly as striking as Lennon's first major solo project. Got hit hard when it first released though fifty years of reappraisal have been kind, if not overly so, to it. McCartney's statement here is less "I'm my own musician" and more "yeah, those Beatles hooks you remember - those were ME" except that's only partially true. Softball effort sounds too mean but is spiritually true. When it came out, the word "mild" came to mind and sure enough both John & George's solo works were a great deal more ambitious (in fairness to lonely Ringo, I think few expected him to fire out a masterful solo work on the first volley) but there is an amiable simplicity which is endearing and suggests pathways towards McCartney's eventual return to energetic stadium pop. Thrown up against other contemporary singer-songwriters, McCartney is fluffy but is also supremely, undeniably gifted. Highlight track is Every Night. Other tracks like Junk, That Would Be Something and Maybe I'm Amazed remain steady hits. Paul's composition credentials are bonafide, no major missteps until the very end - Kreen-Akrore which must have been assembled as a challenge for himself. I've got a soft spot for it since it's indulgent in a way someone with better personal taste probably wouldn't have added to the final mix.
I liked listening to it for the historical context. I didn’t get as much out of it. I do like how it is one of the earlier “DIY” approach albums. I like on the 2nd track where he made the beatboxing type sounds
This album buzzed by pretty quick. It's didn't do a lot for me, but still worth listening to at least once.
Fun listen. Sounded lot more rock influenced than the pop-py Beatles sound. Also sounded a little all over the place. Lacked identity. 3.5 for me.
Interesting bridge between the Beatles and solo and Wings work. Love the album art.
This is a bit tricky. I do like Paul, but this album is too much like an unfinished symphony (what it is, quite literally). If he really liked the stuff, he would've come back at some point to do a finished version of this. So this is more like a kind of therapy thing, something transitional. Important then, but not now. Hence, nothing for this list.
The thoughts of a lost and broken man searching for direction after the end of something magnificent. By 1970, Paul McCartney was at a crossroads. Despite him desperately wanting to keep The Beatles together, John Lennon had given his notice, George Harrison had been distancing himself for a while following his own solo career, and the biggest band of the 1960s was all but done. In order to make sense of this difficult period, McCartney retreated to his farm in Scotland to put some 'thought bubbles' to a four-track tape. This tape of thought bubbles became his debut solo release, 'McCartney'. More song ideas than fully formed songs, 'McCartney' is Paul trying out some ideas without any real scope, which is entirely the point. He's not yet sure what his post-Beatles life has in store for him, but has put some ideas to tape as a means to make sense of what is very much a crossroads in his life. Which makes the song 'Maybe I'm Amazed' all the more impressive. Given that this is Paul's first full-blown attempt at a record without John Lennon, the majesty of 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is the light at the end of the tunnel for Paul. An impassioned piano ballad not unlike some of his Beatles hits ('Hey Jude', 'Let It Be'), 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is Paul coming full circle, through a series of ideas and thoughts, back to his core strength as one of music's celebrated songwriters, and it plays as assurance that Paul will continue to swim without John. It doesn't quite nail the low-fi, minimalist approach (for a perfect example of this approach, see Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska'), but 'McCartney' certainly proves that McCartney was down, but certainly not out when it came to life after The Beatles. Best songs: Maybe I'm Amazed 3/5
Hmmm.
Paul is one of the best musicians and songwriters of all time but something is missing without the others. He has been producing music his whole life and is definitely one of the most prolific performers of all time but this album is rather sophomoric. There are great songs like Maybe I'm Amazed,Every Night, and a few others but it is missing the edge provided by the other 3 Beatles. That's why they were such a success because it was a 4 headed machine that conquered the whole world. But it took 4 extremely different personalities.
„Maybe I’m Amazed“ glänzt, der Rest bleibt skizzenhaft. Ein intimer Einblick, aber kein Meisterwerk.
Maybe I'm Amazed totally holds up as an all-time great Paul song. The rest of the album comes across as a goofball recording session of songs that could have gone through ten more rounds of revisions.
The first solo McCartney album was confusing for everyone. Except for “Maybe I’m Amazed” it’s a pretty average album. Which considering the pressure he must have been under and the depression he was said to be going through, it makes sense. A for effort.
This would probably not be in the list if it wasn't by McCartney. It is rather simple and short, but also fresh and genuine. 6/10
Interesting LP; has a pretty raw and unfinished sound to it, like Paul walked into the studio with a few ideas and just started jamming. Beatles fans would be more into it.
Better than Coldplay
An album that I'm glad Paul made, because he clearly wanted a musical outlet that was completely divorced from the Beatles and especially John. That all being said, this album doesn't need to be heard before you die. It's only significant for being the first solo debut of one of the most famous people to ever live.
McCartney is actually pretty good when he gets bluesy, but most of this album is mid
This one feels like MacCartney was still trying to figure out the whole solo thing. It's a decent album, but nothing really wowed me.
Besides baby I’m amazed it seemed like a run of the mill Paul album. Nothing stood out and it lacked the balance and creativity of the Beatles
If I gave Imagine 3 stars on the strength of the title track, I guess I should do the same here based in Maybe I'm Amazed. Again, I see why people were mad at Yoko if this was what was immediately following The Beatles.
Folksy, some bangers though
Paul McCartney is a damn good songwriter. That being said I didn’t find anything to be particularly memorable. Most enjoyable tracks: Junk, Momma Miss America, Maybe I’m Amazed
I’m a pretty big Beatles fan and put some of their solo albums up side-by-side with Beatles classics (Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass, RAM) but this one is too much of a trifle to be here. Demo quality tossed off songs. A few choice ones but this album barely justifies its short run time.
Not his best work.
I'm a little conflicted how to rate this. It's a bit uneven, but has lots of good ideas, almost sounds like a bunch of demos rather than a finished project. It really feels like McCartney is just pouring out every idea he can to get past a tough time, clearing house post-Beatles. It's something that probably wouldn't have been released by a new or unestablished artist, but because it's Paul he could do what he wanted. There are strong pop songs like "Every Night" and the timeless "Maybe I'm Amazed". Some songs just feel like he's testing genres without much depth (e.g. "Hot As Sun / Glasses"). The track that surprised me most was "Momma Miss America" since it's the kind of cool instrumental stuff I enjoy from a lot of contemporary bands. In all, the peaks are high, but there are skippable tracks that don't do much for me.
Back in the day I bought this album on CD solely for Maybe I'm Amazed. I think it is one of McCartney's best non-Beatles songs. The rest of the album is OK, but a lot does sound half done and lo-fi. In 1970, there were probably not many artists who could have gotten away with releasing an album that sounds like this, but I'm sure there were Beatles fans who needed a fix. Overall, I mean, come on, it's Paul McCartney, the guy is a f'ing genius, but it's just not good enough for 4.
You can tell that Paul can write the heart of songs but needs help fleshing them out. Lots of really nice ideas that don't really go anywhere, or at least don't go far enough. Felt like he was just jamming sometimes or trying things out. Okay I guess, didn't hate it, feel like he should have spent some more time turning these into actual songs though. 2.5.
Completely fine, nothing more. Must admit that I do quite like the rough sounding nature of it, does feel quite casual. I don't really see that it would be on the list had it not been written by McCartney. It's nice and short which helps 3
Fun fact I’ve got this on vinyl but I’ve never heard it. Would project exactly what I thought it would be and it was pretty good. Great guitar riffs and Paul has such a great voice at times. Fav song was Momma Miss America and every song was at least a 5-6/10. Overall I’m feeling a 7.3/10 3.6/5
This album lands somewhere in the middle for me. It definitely has a DIY, stripped-down approach, but overall, the tracks mostly hover around twos and threes out of five, with maybe a couple that come close to a four.
While the rest of the world was trying to sounds like the Beatles, solo Paul was the only one trying NOT to sounds like Paul McCartney. It makes sense: after the musical juggernaut that was the Beatles I would want to do anything else for a while too. Sans large orchestrations and mostly bare bones this album feels like he was exploring his new sounds. It s a little country (Man We Was Lonely), Oo You (a little Sgt. Peppers), a little bluesy Americana (Momma Miss America); a little CSNY (Valentine's Day/Teddy Boy). My favorite song was Every Night, though the love song Lovely Linda was quite lovely when looking at its context. This is one of those “history” albums. In truth, he could have called “Becoming Paul”.
Love me some McCartney, but this one didn't hit quite like some of his other work. Still good nonetheless. 3/5
Allora in contrario del precedente l’ultima canzone me l’ha distrutto
Catchy instrumentals, a good folk rock vibe even if the vocals sound a little derivative.
Songs 1-5 cater to an eclectic type of listener, gives me 70’s Woodstock vibes (of which I need to grow my pallet) maybe this was an introduction? 6/7- Junk and Man We Was Lonely - more my taste in what I’ve come to know and understand from McCartney. I would’ve been happy to skip the rest and the crescendo song Kreen-Akore was laughable. 4/10
-i had never actually heard of this album, i’m surprised it was in here over his more well-known solo work like Ram. -still kinda questioning its inclusion after listening, it just felt like a watered down Beatles album to my uneducated ear. still a few good songs though -Favorites are Momma Miss America and Maybe I’m Amazed
I appreciate that McCartney moved on from the Beatles as a musician, but this album was pretty mediocre. My mind leapt to where these songs were all Beatles rejects (I have no idea if true) which didn’t help my listening, other than ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ I tolerated but didn’t love anything. 2.5/5
I enjoy it, but it’s a little stagnant to me.
Maybe I'm Amazed is an all timer, but the rest of this is a mess.
Boring but my cat liked it
This style suits McCartney. Not overly memorable but an enjoyable morning listen
Maybe I’m Amazed is a great song - rest is nice but not seeing why it’s on this list
inoffensive, I actually quite liked a couple but a lot of filler
I remember this album well - Paul and John stopped writing together, and, while John wrote cutting social commentary, it seems Paul set out to prove good instrumentation can accompany simplistic, edgeless lyrics.
Other than Maybe I'm Amazed and a couple other tracks, this album is pretty lackluster and I'm not sure why it's included besides being Paul's solo debut after the Beatles when Band On The Run is far superior, and already on the list. Not necessary but Maybe I'm Amazed bumps it up a star
A bit mediocre honestly. Has a couple good tracks, but otherwise a pretty forgettable album.
I was pleasantly surprised by this one; I didn’t really care for that Wings album. That said, the last track was pretty unnecessary (noises, breathing, drums, ok, I got it) and the songs felt kind of like some stuff that didn’t make it onto a Beatles album (which is probably why I liked it), just reminding me that I still think the Beatles are best together.
This is a 2 but +1 for maybe I'm amazed
This is a nice little record, and it has one massive hit "Maybe I'm Amazed" and one underground little nugget "That Would Be Something" that was covered by the Grateful Dead among others. I do think of this as being somewhat weaker than his work with Wings on the whole, and I also think there are much stronger Beatles solo records.
Like I liked it but it was all the same??? Or was it…
Historically I get why it was included. Musically I dont. 1 great song on the album. Not one of the best 1001 albums of all time. No way he should be on here 9 times.
***An ok, easy listening album
Fine
McCartney! Guess this is the end to McCartney’s included albums. At least, the ones that I’m not already familiar with. I could have sworn that Ram was also on this list, but I guess not. I was thoroughly unimpressed by McCartney’s previous outing with Band on the Run, though in retrospect that album ain’t all bad. Bluebird is a good tune, and I’m sure there’s some other good ones in there, too. Oh, I got ahead of myself and forgot to judge things the way they oughta be judged: by the cover. I’ve always appreciated this album cover in passing. It looks sharp, and I get the impression that it bears some thematic relevance to the “familial” sound of this album. Good stuff. “Every Night” is a good time. McCartney’s vocals are at their best, and I’m always down for some acoustic guitar action. “Junk” has a great sound to it. Again, I’m a sucker for those acoustic guitars. “Momma Miss America” is solid. Big fan of the reverberating sound and silky-smooth guitars. “Singalong Junk” is another winner. I like the meditative, innocent sound of the instrumental. “Maybe I’m Amazed” is by-the-numbers Beatles fair, but is elevated by a beautiful piano performance. That last song admittedly goes on for way too long, but the first half is primo stuff. Gonna consult the book for why this is in here. “...naive template for [McCartney’s] solo career.” “...[there is] some frankly embarrassing tosh”. Okay, yet another review where the curator criticises the album they’re writing about. “wistfully undercooked”. Damn, this guy hates this thing. “...a deliberate reaction to the smooth veneers of [...] Abbey Road.” “...full of touches that both enthrall and infuriate”. The critic who wrote this is obviously split down the road, and frankly I'd agree. There are some songs that straight up suck on this album, especially during the first half. Yet, I think that’s all part of the fun. As mentioned previously, this album has a very “familial” sound to it and isn’t trying to be anything more than it needs to be. Does this belong on a “must-listen” list? Probably not, though I’m favourable to the inclusion. I liked this one.
Probably a 2.75 but I’ve rounded up to a 3, it was alright but nothing special and no real stand out tracks for me
It's cool that McCartney played all the components, and the second half of the album somewhat redeemed the first part.
Maybe slightly more enjoyable than The Beatles albums
It was nice background music.
Almost a 4 but not quite
On his first solo album, McCartney continues where he left off with the Beatles. Most of these tracks would not have been out of place on Abbey Road. Most of the time, the album chugs along nicely, but I'm missing the real heavy hitters. Only Maybe I'm Amazed has what it takes to be a classic. The album falls short of greatness, but is an enjoyable listen nonetheless. 3/5
Super patchy! But gets by on charm and an undeniable classic ('Maybe I'm Amazed').
Decent album.
Maybe I’m Amazed is a fantastic song. This album is a 3.5 if we had half ratings. As it stands, I am rounding down because I got no love from Ticketmaster when trying to get Sir Paul tickets this week.
This felt cathartic amidst all the shit that was happening at the end of the Beatles. I think it was a processing album. It was a chance to come to terms with the loss of an important part of his life for the last 10 years. Very interesting, but not necessarily enthralling.
Not a lo g album and quite experimental with a song called glasses festering him playing with ...glasses!
It will never cease to amaze me how Paul can basically fart around and write 2 or 3 absolute killer, all-time great pop tunes. This album really takes a listen or two and some context to find its groove, but there’s definitely something there. Still, there’s a lot of rough edges, and while this album may have been the only thing saving his sanity, it’s definitely a work in progress more than a cohesive album.
One good hit song and a bunch of experimentals does not make a good album
9 Tem 2025 versiyon M, Singalong Junk, Maybe I'm Amazed, Kreen- Akroore, Men We Was Lonely şarkılarını sevdi.
A decent solo effort by McCartney, not great. A little offbeat but worth a listen.
It was ok. Nothing great, nothing terrible. Middle of the road. Not very memorable the next day.
Ganska svagt album, men Maybe I'm Amazed lyfter hela skivan från 2 till 3.
Some interesting stuff in here. I particularly loved “Momma Miss America”. It’s possible that if a man named John Smith had released this album I’d have considered it for four stars, but it is impossible not to compare it to the Beatles output which makes it seem slight in comparison.
Look like a woman Dress like a lady Talk like a baby Love like a woman
This was better than I remembered. It a little self indulgent, but there's some pretty good stuff there. But the Beatles are still best together.
I'm still not a hug McCartney fan, but I like Junk/Singalong Junk and Maybe I'm Amazed enough that that I liked this record overall. 3.25/5
It's like the Beatles lite. its not terrible, but it's not the best.
Oo you Singalong junk Maybe I’m amazed
Good stuff. Clearly Paul was carrying a good amount of steam out of his time with the Beatles, and has plenty of talent and a crisp sense of his own style. Definitely has somewhat of an aura of afterglow, but I think that's unavoidable on the heels of such a massive success.
This was pleasant listening. Linda's harmonies on "Man We Was Lonely" are lovely. A couple of tracks are very reminiscent of Lennon's "Oh, My Love", which makes me wonder if they came from Beatles sessions.
Нормальный такой слак-р-ролл от чела, который заебался выпускать по три величайших альбома в истории музыки на протяжении нескольких лет. Почему бы и нет. Лучшая песня - Every Night.
Not too bad rock album, sounds the most like mid-Beatles
Enjoyable but uneven and besides Maybe I’m Amazed I don’t think I will be coming back to this much if at all.
The album was undoubtedly ahead of its time, but it feels less like an album, and more a series of half-baked ideas yet to find it a purpose.
It has a lo fi aesthetic that makes it feel like listening to a band jam in a garage. That comparison extends to the songs, which often feel a bit half baked or like he included the first take. But it's also kind of charming just hearing Paul mess around and have fun, especially on the more creative instrumental tracks. Apart from Maybe I'm Amazed (which feels very out of place), Oo You and Momma Miss America were my favourites.
Didn't really listen to this but 3 stars. I'll get to sometime
I actually like the lofi production, and there are some lovely moments in there, but it has too much filler to get more than a 3/5.
Only really liked the big hit.
Nije me baš impresioniralo
Äntligen nästan Beatles! Jovars, var väl trevligt överlag. "Maybe I'm Amazed" har jag hört många gånger och gillar skarpt.
Sounds like a collection of demos and outtakes. (Except for “Maybe I’m Amazed.”)
3.4 It's alright, but definitely missing that spark that made the Beatles what it was. I feel like too much Lennon or McCartney in isolation is grating, whereas mix then together and wow. Lennon would stop McCartney from going too far down the rabbithole of music hall nonsense, whilst McCartnet will get Lennon to stop the drug-fuelled to the extent it's unaccessible nonsense. This album contains a few good ones, but no really great hooks, far too much instrumental and a terrible closer. Still, it's good, but barely.
For some odd reason "Maybe I'm Amazed" seems out of place here, despite being the only song that was given any significant radio play.
Pas transcendant mais quelques bangers (Junk). Ça manque un peu d’âme à mon goût.
the album was fine. i think it was his first solo album and it definitely had that Beatles sound. curious how his later albums sound in comparison. definitely liked the way the album ended with the breathing sounds.
Ein entspanntes Rock-Album von 1970. Keine großen Produktions-Tricks, einfach Musik. 3/5
He still has the magical musical stardust, even on a DIY effort. Imagine what some of these songs would have sounded like with the full on Beatles production. But then again, the rough and ready allows them to stand on their own, without the strings etc. Not a bad debut. He seems like a nice fella.
I think junk and singalong junk is pretty apt. +2s in chat for Maybe I’m Amazed but it feels cut from a completely different album. Gimme more Kreen-Akrore
Meh.
I often wonder what of the first solo records from the Beatles could possibly end up on a true Beatles record following Let It Be since a lot of the late Beatles work was pretty individualistic. Yeah, Paul went full experimental with this one and the answer to my question would probably be Maybe I'm Amazed, which wouldn't do well on a Beatles record. Out of the three non-drummers, Paul falls into a rare third with this submission, but still a decent record in a historical context. 3/5
falleg lítil lög. er stundum of grimmur við svona söngvarapopp, held þetta gæti vaxið. var of grimmur við harrýson á sínum tíma. 3,5.
Good album. Different from his work with The Beatles and Wings.
very little wrong with this but my god it bores me
Paul is good
3.75
No strong feelings here.
j’aime pas les beatles 2.5 arrondi à la hausse parce que lui donner 2☆ doesn’t sound right
I’m an unabashed Beatles and McCartney fan, but I really prefer his work as a Beatle over his solo and Wings efforts. I purchased a used copy of this record for $7, less than ten years ago out of curiosity, and there were many copies available in the store for sale that day. When I got home and played the record, I found out why…I thought it just wasn’t very good. So when it popped up last night, I was all set to give it two stars based on my memory but after listening to it again for the first time in a long time, my judgment isn’t as harsh. Yes, there are songs here that sound like demo tape garbage, and the production is overly simple and sometimes sounds amateurish, but it is pretty remarkable that McCartney played all of the instruments, and a few of the songs are keepers. The way I feel today, it is a three star album, and I certainly understand why it is on this list.
Its fine... every adult in my life has been pretentious about the Beatles (and the surrounding acts) so maybe I was expecting more.
Ehhh! I don’t think I can give this a 4 let alone a 5. Feels like one of the first albums did by himself and I can just hear the experimentation and lack of common theme! Not my favorite but not displeasing
Not the best of McCartney, not sure that being just post-Beatles justifies how short and non-technical the songs are. Considering his impact as a member of The Beatles, I frankly expected quite a bit more adventure on these tracks, something more like Peter Gabriel post-Genesis. Instead it comes out as someone figuring they don't need to bother, it'll be successful no matter what - and it was.
This is a pleasant album with some pleasant songs here and there. Unfortunately the majority of tracks on here sound like they're unrealized sketches or Paul just noodling about. Its saving grace is that "Maybe I'm Amazed" is on this album. He doesn't get a pass just because he's Paul McCartney. Sometimes great artists release mid albums and that's okay. He's obviously released a lot of bangers over the decades. But, this just isn't one of them.
Det är ju inte Beatles direkt.
If it wasn't Paul McCartney, would I give it a 3? I don't know. Obviously the album has historical significance in that it marked the end of the Beatles and it was McCartney's first solo album. But it's average at best. Maybe a nod for Paul doing it all himself and layering and overdubbing. Still, this is not his greatest work. Except for Maybe I'm Amazed. That song is incredible and I've thought so from the first time I ever heard it. But the rest of the album? Went as quickly as it came.
Eh. Kinda half baked. Maybe I’m Amazed is great but otherwise forgettable.
relaxing
it was ight. nothing too crazy good but it wasnt a struggle to listen to
Есть знакомые интересные нотки, но в целом не интересно
Doesn’t exactly blow you out of the water but it’s pleasant.
I've never understood the Macca hype. This is a good album, it's got some interesting bluesy parts scattered about it and maybe 50 years ago thisreally was amazing - but it's mostly forgettable, no single tracks stand out and I'm not drawn to listen to it again. It's simply not for me, but it was short so I'll chuck it an extra star.
First McCartney solo album that I've listened to fully. Really good at times but never quite packs a punch. (Maybe I'm a Man attempts, but no beuno.) Holy hell is Junk amazing though. It was the only song from this album that I had heard before (and not ong ago at that) but had forgotten about it.
Proof that one great song does not an album make. 3 stars or C-.
First solo album of his I’ve listened to. Weird and experimental but I really liked it. Definitely not just a bunch of silly love songs.
This seemed exactly what it was, a guy just jamming in his house having fun. Really picked up towards the end.
who tf is paul mccartney bro 😭😂✌🏾 theres like two good songs on here idk
"McCartney" is the debut solo album by English rock musician and singer-songwriter Paul McCartney. It was recorded after a period of depression and confusion following John Lennon's private departure from the Beatles and in secrecy, using basic home recording equipment. McCartney performed the entire album alone except for some backing vocals from his wife, Linda, and overdubbed and recorded using a four-track tape recorder. Initially, the album has negative reviews for its underproduced and lo-fi quality. Commercially. It reached #1 in the US and #2 in the UK. "The Lovely Linda" opens the album. Short and sparse with acoustic guitar, bass and percussion. Dedicated to his first wife (and not the last song for that). It took until the fourth song "Every Night" to get a melody. Acoustic guitar carrying the melody in a song about having optimism despite the Beatles' imminent breakup. McCartney wrote "Junk" while he was in India. He is describing junk in his garage and life in general. "Teddy Bear" has, at this point, the standard instruments used: acoustic guitar, bass and drums. Linda on backing vocals. A song that describes the way in which a close relationship between a widow and son is destroyed by her new romantic interest. And out of nowhere, so to say, comes "Maybe I'm Amazed." A piano ballad dedicated to his wife. Emotional vocals. Two classic guitar solos. Interesting guitar slashes. One of Paul's best solo and overall songs for sure. I guess I'll state the obvious: this album is charming. Loose, random, sparse, Paul noodling around, no real structure and five instrumental songs. There are three good to great songs ("Every Night," "Teddy Bear," and "Maybe I'm Amazed") which make this album worth it for at least one listen.
Previously rated: Band on the Run (4/5) ************************** I'm a big Beatles fan, but I've never heard this album. I wasn't impressed. It sounded like a bunch of unfinished demos and instrumentals. Maybe I'm Amazed is a good song. Just average, and probably doesn't belong on the list.
Homemade Macca album. Expected to be amazed.
Nice, but most the songwriting is nothing compared to his previous work.
When I looked at the song list I wondered why I've only heard of one of these songs. After listening I can see why. This just seems like a bunch of throwaway songs except for a couple. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is of course incredible, but that and maybe "Every Night" are the only standouts.
Not up there with his best work but i did enjoy it. Best tracks Junk and Hot as Sun
Pretty low key album. I only recognized one of the songs - Baby I’m Amazed. Very stripped down mellow album.
Better than I thought it was going to be, but still unexciting. A top end 3.
Baby I'm Amazed puts a floor on how low you could rate this. I've never heard the album and was surprised how early it is. Him doing it all himself is so interesting especially where their careers all were at that time. Not a masterpiece but a worthwhile listen for sure and you can see ways he wanted to grow from this one.
I don't tend to like songs with a name being repeated in the chorus. Nice guitar, strange vocal choices. Paul really likes to get away with partially written songs. Obviously drawing a lot of inspiration from the Southern United States. Feels like a handful of rushed or partially completed songs, but the bones are decent.
Good album , not great. Baby I’m Amazed is a solid hit.
Ok
Solo McCartney is just not my thing.
It's alright. Kind of forgettable. I think I am coming to the conclusion that John Lennon is the best Beatle
3.5 Ok McCartney is my guy, my favorite Beatle, the best songwriter maybe of all time, but this is mostly him getting stuff out of his system after the breakup of his band. A lot of these songs feel more like ideas than fleshed out productions. He’s working through some stuff! The highlight is of course “Maybe I’m Amazed” which is such a powerhouse of a song, coming right at the end of the album.
6/10 Paul writes a good tune and doesn't know when to end songs. His lyrics are bare and catchy. I lovehate Paul. That comes out to a 3 in my book 3-5-2025
It really felt like a Paul McCartney experiment. Some white album stuff mixed with one classic track. Not as good as his stuff with wings, but still enjoyable.
This sounds more like a demo than a finished album, filled with song ideas rather than finished pieces. Maybe I'm Amazed is a classic (finished!) and great song. Liked Songs Added: Maybe I'm Amazed
Much respect for Paul's impact on music, culture and humanity. But I've never been all-in on his music. A few songs stand out, but mostly out of familiarity.
Want to learn all the bass lines!
Maybe I'm Amazed is a belter. I prefer McCartney II; there's your proper 'indie' weirdness.
McCartney alone just can’t compare to the Beatles as a unit. The band helps to balance things. On this album it's just too much Paul. You get the occasional gems, like “Maybe I’m Amazed,” but it’s mostly fine to forgettable. I did learn that this album was one of the originators of lo-fi rock music, but I’ve gotta say I wish McCartney hadn’t taught artists to record intentionally poor sounding music in their bedrooms.
I love listening to Paul McCartney sing. Felt like half this album was instrumental, which I could have done without.
I like the lo fi sound of McCartney recording on his own in his home. And Maybe I’m Amazed is my reaction to the song. Unfortunately for the most part, this album feels like a collection of incomplete ideas.
Maybe I’m Amazed is pretty good The rest is ok but not a lot more
3.4/5
Decent, but not anything crazy
Really, really bland. Don't understand all the glowing reviews. Felt like half the songs are just poppy noodling. Basically, it's McCartney giving prog a go because it's trendy, which is kind of a theme with McCartney's worst solo output. He's better when he isn't chasing trends. However, when Paul remembers to actually write a song, it's not bad, hence the 3 stars.
