Reviews (page 7 of 12)
Baby making music. Gotta respect the Isleys. They made the Billboard 100 every decade from the 50s to the 2000s.
this is a vibe and a half
Easy, breezy listen. Super tight, absolutely heavenly vocals, and some top notch guitar work on "That Lady," and "Summer Breeze." "The Highways of My Life" is a phenomenal closer. Warm, wise, soulful.
Gorgeous vocals. Mostly covers, but covers that are done really well, changed to suit their style. I love their funk, will listen to this again, but can’t get a five with covers.
Another great funky, soulful, and passionate 1970s album...love that decade so much! Insanely good synthesizer/keys throughout the album and killer guitar work as well. A great Doobie Brothers cover as well. Excellent album. Favorite tracks: That Lady, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, Listen to the Music, What It Comes Down To, Sunshine (Go Away Today), Summer Breeze.
Funky, cool, easy. Great music here.
I'd kind of forgotten about the Isley Brothers until I heard this--so much fun. I love the guitars and the extended version of Summer Breeze.
Good stuff
Good old school R and B. Would rate it three most like but the quality of the opening track brings it up to a four for me.
Really loved that. First time hearing these guys, great bit of funk n soul. Definitely gonna put this on the rotation.
Relaxing
It's a vibe
With the exceptions of “Shout” and “Twist and Shout”, this album contains all the best music that the Isley Brothers ever recorded. It’s a re-invention of the Isley Brothers as a funk group, as opposed to the more straightforward R&B music they were making in the 50s and 60s. About 15 years into their career, the Isleys proved how versatile they were.
I was hungry when I listened to this and traffic was bad but it was good. 8/10 capa#10
Didn’t listen to all the bonus tracks, but pretty enjoyable! 7.5/10
7/10 - I feel like a lot of these songs have been sampled or covered and made more popular because of the sample or cover. Overall sounded great.
Enjoyable, some good songs for sure 7.5/10
Listened 3/9/24. Some interesting cover choices. I thouroughly enjoyed this.
Loved it. Might be a 5. Majority of the songs were awesome and have been sampled in a lot of songs I love.
Awesome stuff. Not much more to say. Don't know much about the band, or it's impact on the wider musical scene. Enjoyed listening to it!
Hey not bad!
What a fuckin' banger.
“that’s lady” is so incredibly funky with a fantastic riff but is lacking lyrically 4*, “summer breeze” is a incredible piece of music 5* and “the highways of my life” which is a good song but lacks a little impact 3.5*. There’s also a gem in “you walk your way” and “sunshine go away today” Overall every vocal is fantastic as are many of the riffs, whilst the lyrical content might be lacking the sheer amount of funk carries this through. A album perfect for sunshine
Wonderful relaxing R&B album. Great grooves!
Not much to say other than this is a real chill album that’s very pleasant to listen to. I definitely favorited a few of these tunes and will be listening again.
Pretty good
Glorious
3.5/5
Really fun record 4/5
Classic Motown Amazing sound and legendary groove 4.5
This was great. The guitar brother rips.
This is very good. The first few times I listened to it I was distracted and it faded into the background, but with perserverence I have learned that it's high quality throughout.
favorite song: That Lady least favorite song: Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight rating: 8.5/10
Did anyone else know "That Lady" has a sick guitar solo in it? Half of the songs on this album are covers, but The Isley Brothers make them their own. They don't do what a lot of bands do with covers which is making them sound exactly like the original. It's only half way through the songs that you realize wait a minute I know this. The original songs on here are great. I would probably have given this album 5 stars if they were a couple fewer covers and some more original hits.
That Lady, pts1 & 2 is een lekkere binnenkomer. Beetje jazzy, beetje funky, heel veel soul, lekker man. Lekker album, niet te lang, en echt pure pure soul FAVO: That Lady, Listen to the music, Summer Breeze pts1&2
Solid! 4
Good Album, Isley Brothers always make me nostalgic to when i was growing up.
funky
loved it!
Smoooooth. I’ve listened to “i” by Kendrick Lamar so much that it’s hard not to hear that with the opening track. This is a relaxing, vibey, summer breeze of an album.
I enjoyed this
This was pleasantly funky and fun to listen to. I enjoyed the interview at the end of the extended version.
This album is awesome. Killer bass and vocals throughout
Groovy as fuck. The heights that this record reaches are so high that you feel like you're being transported to another plane of existence. The Highways of My Life is so good and smooth that you never want the song to end. Summer Breeze (which I had no idea that The Isley Brothers had a version of) just became the definitive version of the song in my mind, and Don't Let Me Be Lonely tonight oozes with soul, funk, and sexiness. Besides those tracks are a few ups and downs throughout the record (including the unfortunately subpar version of Listen to the Music - sorry, I prefer the original by The Doobie Brothers!), but overall it's oh so very strong. Reminds me to listen to these guys more often. It's been a minute since I last listened to Between the Sheets.
So fun! What an incredible career this group in its various incarnations has enjoyed for so long. This album has a handful of familiar songs on it, and it's enjoyable. They are superbly skilled, and I like the grooves. It's all very 70s sounding, and in this case, that's not at all a negative.
4/5
I was going to do a 3. But there are so many classics on here. Can't do a 3. Doesn't do the classics justice.
8/10
Had a blast with this one
Great 60s album
Fuuuuuuuuunky groovy soul.
summer breeze 👌🏻
Me gustó un montón. Es como un funky-disco. La viola es tremenda.
Bangers!
amazing funk
Seems so deeply engrained in a lot of what I hear at this point, great listen.
I'm not sure if this was the beginning or middle of the funk movement, but there's certainly a lot of it in this album. The beginning of Ride Wit Me sounds just like The Lady, part 1.
Funky
Great soul funk album enjoyed the doobie cover
Groovy baby
Good r n b
A really fun mix of funk/RnB. Crazy good energy. Very much dig this
4.5 stars. Makes me want to listen to more of the Isley Brothers.
I can dig it.
Loved this album! There's a serious nostalgia factor here for me. I loved these 70's groups.
Really fun listen. Some solid grooves on the album, and shows how timeless the Isley Brothers could be. Not quite a 5 star for me, but would definitely roll a few of these tracks back now and again.
This album was incredibly easy to listen to - a very likeable album. Summer Breeze, Pts 1 & 2 was especially good!
Smooth listening, including several well-known tracks. Will certainly check out down the road.
Some real bangers on this album
This was awesome. I love this style of music from the 1970’s.
Wow! The covers are amazing (“Don’t let me lonely tonight” & “Summer Breeze”). Great party album for a funky summer shindig. Felt like it was over too soon. I could have used one more hit.
So funky so easy to listen to
Really nice record. Love the covers of some great songs! Solid guitars, cool R&B tunes for an evening playlist.
I like this :-)
The voices harmonization and the high value production plus instrument assembly is marvellous.
Has there ever been a better album opener to announce a group’s intentions than “That Lady, Pts. 1 & 2”? It’s just about the smoothest, funkiest thesis statement in ‘70s R&B. The 1970s multiverse that gave us Parliament/Funkadelic and The Neville Brothers decided to create one more self-contained group of Soul superheroes in The Isley Brothers. That they existed in other forms—doo-wop crew, Motown hit makers, ‘60s soul-pop label runners, now funk masters—makes their music all the more remarkable. It’s hard to say what the best thing about this record is: the athletic vocals, the Hendrix-level guitar, the arrangements that stretch out the music without stretching our patience, the musicianship par excellence all qualify as highlights unto themselves. Ronald Isley gets deserved accolades for his vocal work, but let’s take a beat to admire the guitar work of brother Ernie. His playing on this record is at once free/experimental and exactly the energy that the songs require. Peerless. That album cover? Iconic: simultaneously rooted in 1973 and timeless. Side Note: the covers on this record are incredibly satisfying. They encourage “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” to become the R&B slow jam it was always intended to be; they manage to inject even more soul into an already soul-filled “Listen to the Music”; they transform yacht rock staple “Summer Breeze” into guitar-driven acid Soul music.
Better overall than I expected
The Lady - fast paced, funky banger about an attractive lady. 70s guitar solo I’ve heard a million times (sampled on “I” off TPAB), iconic, fantastic guitar playing (funky, wah, great solos). Cool short bass solo 2 - R&B slow jam trying to get a girl to spend night. Incredible vocal performance. Piano driven with some acoustic guitar chords. 3 - low key love song, great vocals wah guitar is back, piano driven stil, vocals used as instrument towards the end 4 - break up song, voice used as instrument 5 - 6- great putto solo 7- cool staccato bass and wah guitar intro. Bass synth/fuzz line? Great guitar solo 8- sexy lead guitar line, guitar arpeggio rhythm. Changes to piano and strummed chords after intro. “Blowing through the jasmine in my mind” a bit psychedelic. Epic extended guitar solo. Fav song so far 9- piano ballad, great background vocals. Overall sound - Awaken My Love was influenced, vocals are great throughout. Fuzz guitar sound is great
Fun album!
I especially liked the covers.
Just great stuff, definitely something I'll come back to. Didn't really think I was into this kind of soul, always thought it a bit too... smooth? Like, disguising raw passion and feeling in overly-sweet dulcet tones. Here I'm really getting some passion though -- love it. I've only vaguely heard of the band before, and I do remember hearing That Lady somewhere (which, I must say, might be my least favorite track on the record). Songs that particularly stood out for me now in my first 2-3 listens are Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight and You Walk Your Way, but the whole middle of the record is just great.
Brought back great memories. Loved the cover songs
This was an alright album. I am not a big fan of progressive soul music but this one did have some very memorable tracks. Those tracks are strong enough to carry this album to a higher rating. I highly recommend at least a single listen of this album, even to those that are not a fan of this genre. Favorite Song(s): "Summer Breeze" (especially Pt. 1), "Listen to the Music", "That Lady Pts 1 & 2"
Amazing upbeat vibes. Some classics I recognised but all the songs were banging.
This is getting out of hand, now there are six of them! The Isley Brothers are an amazing crew. I'd love to be one of these brothers. It sounds like they're having so much fun with each other. Love this album. The synth and guitar are both so meaty. I have a hard time not smiling when I listen to this. I think this does not transcend the funk/soul genre into all time best albums, but it's still an incredible album. I'm glad I have this in my mental catalog now.
Good album, enjoyed listening
Great covers on this album!
Very soulful. Awesome guitar and bass riffs. Quite chill.
Classic 70s soul Fun funk Summer nights
-i have never heard of these guys or this album -excited to see what this is like -oh this is real 70’s music -and the GUITARRRRR -i like all of them singing together -THIS SOLOOOO IS EATINGGGG -okay this man is singing with his whole chest and heart -these songs are So catchy and the singing is really amazing -overall i loved the groovy 70’s vibes in the studio today -it totally gets a four from me
Nice Hintergrund chillig
Didn't know anything about them before listening to the album. I dig it
Was astounded at the growth. Didn’t know the album, walked away with new respect for funky soul
Loved it; funky, soulful, and fun.
Fantastic. One of my all time favorite voices and several of her best songs. 5 stars.
Pretty cool for a trainride back home. Nice and cosy, but not groundbreaking.
Geht auf jeden Fall voll klar. Geiler, wenns schneller und gitarrenlastiger ist, langweiliger, wenns balladig ist.
Smooth as fuck, with great melodies, harmonies, and performances spread through everything. The production is great as well. The Doobie Brothers cover is solid, but I somehow prefer the original. Favorite tracks: "That Lady", "You Walk Your Way", "The Highways Of My Life"
Cool album cover. Not a fan of the "Listen to the music" cover, but it's fine. Summer Breeze cover is a really cool song. Pretty good as an album over all.
I wasn't really expecting to like this, 70s R&B is definitely not my thing, but I dug it anyways.
Would you look at that. This album's pretty good. I liked it. However, I don't have much to say about 3+3 by The Isley Brothers. The singing is quite good. The sound is nice as well. Some songs lean more into funk, while others are closer to soul music. There's enough variety in the songs, both in terms of lyrics and sound, for it to not get too repetitive by the end of the album. The lyrics definitely aren't bad. This is just a pretty decent funk/soul album. I do have to point out that the Isley Brothers are still a thing, albeit with different brothers. The fact that these guys started in the 50s and still go today is very impressive. From what I've heard, this album is one of their best, and I believe it. This is some good stuff. light 4/5.
They got me asking "Who's that lady?" The grooves are butter smooth and the vocal work is excellent. The cover of Listen To The Music is just F I L T H Y! This album is great.
Smooth. Silky.
4.4 - Whereas Al Green moans achingly about love's extreme torrents - the crushing heartbreaks, as well as the triumphs of finding a true companion, The Isley Brothers sing about a more casual form of romance. Songs like "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and "You Walk Your Way" take me back to my twenties and thirties, when I was involved in short-term liaisons with strings of various women. Breakups felt like more of an inconvenience than a life-changing event. This record is a terrific soundtrack for that emotional landscape.
Who is that lady?? 3.6.
Wow, didn't know that they had some covers and interviews on the album. Still, this is a testimony of the great Isleys and the pillar of who they are. I never knew they had 11 albums at this point in their discography. Kudos to them and their accomplishments. Great classic soul of the time.
3.9 - great album, not much else to say tbh
That Lady - great track, feels strange without Kendrick rapping on top. If You Were There - I like the da da da dra das at the end Listen to the Music sounds Stevie-esque. The transition to What It Comes Down To is vibey. Summer Breeze hasn't typically been my fave, but it is a great tune really. Fave Tracks: That Lady, What It Comes Down To, Summer Breeze, The Highways of My Life 4.2/5
Very good early R&B album.
Even more groovy soul and funk! This time it's from The Isley Brothers who I have always considered more of a live group than an album one. But wow, 3+3 is a damn fine record filled with some FILTHY bass lines. 'Summer Breeze' is amazing.
Loved this one, knew a bit more than I expected!
Very nice, very funky
I was tempted to go 5 But I'm going 4 Guitars and vocals are unreal Summer Breeze is a classic High 4/5
70% funky, 30% sleepy.
Some standard funk / soul. Good and catchy tracks as expected with the genre, and energetic. This is a fun time, good grooves.
Full of groovy bangers
Very good. But needs more math.
This was new to me, and very good! I read they recorded this at the same time Stevie Wonder was making Innervisions, and some of the ultra-magic of that record must have rubbed off on this one.
The Isley Brothers are good. This album is good. The album cover is good. I’ve been on a bit of a funk/soul kick lately and this album fits right in. The stand out for me was Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, but I liked them all.
Fun funky R&B album. Not too busy, good sounds. Favorite tracks: Summer Breeze, That Lady
That Lady earns this four stars alone. Interesting covers of James Taylor, Seals and Crofts, the Doobie Brothers.
Classic
This is some good proto-funk and another amazing 70's album cover
4.5
Interviste da ascoltare Don't let me be lonely tonight Summer Breeze What it comes down to The highways of my life
Liked it
Really nice 4*
“That lady” and “summer breeze” are so fire. But the rest just doesn’t meet the potency of these songs. Still good.
This album is pretty spectacular some great musician ship, and re-interpretation of other songs. I do really like the Doobie brothers cover the summer breeze cover is the one low point. Will listen to some songs again because the guitar playing is very interesting.
Zwoel
Eh chill jazz
Funky
I forgot about Highways of My Life... Great song. Always loved That Lady and Summer Breeze. Especially Summer Breeze... I love their synths and electric guitar. Their lead singer has a very smooth way of singing. Very nice
So, this is an album of cover songs? Decent. +1 for the funk version of That Lady - 4/5
Very close to a 5 but not quite. isleys might be the best band of all time though.
Oh, this was really damn good. I feel like that's going to be a recurring theme for every single one of these mini-reviews. I think that the Isley Brothers' position in the general span of music is absolutely legendary. I mean, the way they were able to evolve from simply just being a great vocal group made up of 3 brothers in the 1950s and 60s to being a full-fledged 6 piece soul, funk, and rock band in the 70s is amazing. This album is great. The vocals are great, the guitar is amazing, it's sexy, it's funky, it's everything you would want out of a 70s R&B album. I would say my least favorite song here was the cover of Listen to the Music by the Doobie Brothers, I just felt a little let down because that original is such a great song. No, but this album is great and That Lady is absolutely iconic.
Motown is awesome
almost a five but too many terrible covers
Never heard of Isley brothers. The album shut up my ignorance. Very good album, danced through, will repeat
Great album! So many songs I was unsure if they wrote them, or covered them. Some songs a little to long.
Kendrick’s samples overall nice album
The Isley Brothers "try not to make a hit challenge" IMPOSSIBLE (GONE SEXUAL)
Great album
I liked this album, it was a pleasant listen. The lead singer's voice is so smooth and soothing, and this album was funky. It was a fun listen. My favorite track was their cover of "Listen to the Music".
I like Sunshine (Go Away Today) and Summer Breeze parts one and two the best. Good album
4.5 stars great
contained some bangers!
👍👍
Listened to this while walking and it works a vibe, very good stuff.
Funky.
Funky banger after funky banger. Summer Breeze has one of the catchiest hooks of all time. Plus a very stylish group on the album cover, that gets them a point all on its own. I wish I could pull off that black poncho/handlebar moustache combo. After a bit of research I've found out how many of the songs are covers. Absolutely bangin' covers, but it detracts from the originality slightly, especially when the originals are already as good as they are. The slight lack of cohesion that would turn this from a bag of songs into a coherent album means this doesn't quite make the 5 star mark for me.
Loved this album! Reminds me of warm summer nights. This is one I will love to revisit.
Yes
Good album, incred vocals and shredding
Some crackers on there!
Nice discovery. Surprisingly good instruments. Definitelly brought the sun in my day
The Isley Brothers are soul and funk incarnate. With the silky vocals, sweet guitar playing, and bongos, they made beautiful music. Who's that lady? Summer breeze~
I generally prefer The Isley Brothers earlier material but this is a great album with some great songs on it
Fantastic Album, love the happy, funky groves. Great music to get you through that midweek slump
First one I’m listening to. It was groovy, not something I’ve ever really listened to before. Not sure what my ratings are going to look like but it was a fun listen
4 stars, the some of the experimental electronics were hard to get through but the rest of the music had me bopping my head
Great album with some really surprisingly complex guitar work. Some good originals and some great covers to back them up.
hell yeah I love this SO much more than I thought I was going to. doesn't get tired or predictable and very funky. best tracks: summer breeze 1 +2, that lady 1 + 2, dont let me be lonely tonight
Great vibes. Had never heard of them before but the album had some classic songs that I knew.
Some cool covers and that lady. Good album
funkay
It was good, but I really preferred the originals for a lot of the covers so that tempered my enjoyment.
funky as hell. also gave us an absolute banger of a kendrick song so pretty good album overall
Funky, Gute Laune Musik und trotzdem überhaupt nicht seicht. Hat mich sehr überrascht und ich muss mal n bisschen mehr Soul/ Funk hören. Vocals super!
This is fun, beautiful soul the whole family can enjoy. The covers add something unique and the originals are instant classics. They really came into their own in this one. 4/5
Really good great piano and drums and vocals 100% would listen again
Funky psychedelic soul that sounds as good on the streets as it does between the sheets.
Great album, short and gets me in a real good mood, the only thing i didn't like was the tone of the guitar
A fun album for the summer with some great hits. I only wish the weather were better whilst I was listening today!
Bank holiday bongo brilliance. Really enjoyed that. There's no reason to not give it a 5, but there is also no reason to give it a 5.
SUMMER BREEZE
Not generally my kind of thing, but definitely very good regardless. Some iconic tracks on here.
The serious “don’t fuck with me“ look they all have on the cover makes the high pitch vocals a surprise. I generally don’t like high pitch males singing soul but the raunchy lead guitar in That Lady tells me it will be different this time. The instrument playing sets this album apart from the pop soul I can’t stand. I expect That Lady‘s influence is what led to Michael Jackson having Eddie Van H contribute the solo to Beat It. The instrument playing throughout puts this album a level higher than other soul and makes it enjoyable.
quite niceee except for the interview songs which i don't love, the rest has an immaculate vibe.
Sweet
That Lady is impeccable and I will not tolerate dissenting opinions. The guitar, the energy, the smoothness of it all. I love it. The rest of the album is also amazing. Summer Breeze, the Doobie Brothers cover, every bit of it is impeccable funk and soul. Every song is fresh. Great album for the list.
Very cool
Very nice jazzy
Yeah, this is very nice indeed. Somehow never heard of these guys before(!), but some truly beautiful and funky stuff on this record.
Amazing guitar work
Probably sitting slightly higher than a 4
uma delicinha
I rated the last album wrong, it should have been a 2. This one is a 4 for me.
Classic, fantastic jazz and funk instrumentation, stunning guitar. Some choices come off as grating more than interesting.
Fun album with some hits and a lot of songs that have been sampled.
3 + 3= So much swag
Starkaste 4an på länge
Great stuff - musically intricate and funky, and to me, surprisingly cynical. These are not all happy upbeat songs. Great psychedelic lead guitar, warm 70s production, beautiful use of melody. Only a four as some of the lyrics left a bit of a sour taste.
Not my normal genre but still too many hits
Honestly one of the most lush and easy listens I've had in a long time. Had so much fun listening to all these songs on my way to work. Can't go wrong with some funky soul music!
A classic album; a highlight of Americana.
Pretty dang good
I quite enjoyed this album. Great funky beats.
very good 86/100
I knew they were good, but this is great. The covers were an especially pleasant surprise
Sick vibes!
I think I've already listened to most of this album over the radio (thank you 104.3 WOMC)... still, it's fantastic. I swear, that keeps happening whenever I check in on the Isley Brothers. Anyway, That Lady is a classic of funk, of course, and proof of this band's immaculate hitmaking ability during their peak in the 70's. Listen to the Music, Summer Breeze and Highways of My Life are fantastic, too. There are some points where the groove becomes slightly deniable or the tempo slows a touch too much, but this is an incredibly water-tight piece of magical funk and soul music. A gleaming, bumping and bobbing 4/5.
I loved this album. Despite not generally leaning towards this style, it was easy to listen to, had catchy lyrics and is definitely an album I will play again this summer
3+3= a great funky album to listen to on a roadtrip
A bit soft otherwise very good
This is nice. The album contains some good Soul/Pop/R'n'B/Funk tunes that make for an easy listening experience. There are no real standouts, but the whole record flows quite easily. 3.5/5
Varsin nautinnollista soulia sen kulta-ajalta. Kolmosen ja nelosen välillä, mutta menköön nyt 4.
Definition of Soul and Funk.
I just love this sound, those vibes, funky bass line, psychedelic guitar solos, everything is almost perfect. Summer Breeze is definitely the best song on the album, encapsulating the raw talent and abilities of the Isley Brothers. It's the first time I was listening to this band, but for sure it won't be the last time.
Like taking a soak in a warm bath of FUNK
Funky, steamy, good for love making.
Own on Vinyl
Would listen to some again
Fantastic album. Love the guitar work!
I'd describe as R&B/Soul. Fun, relaxed instrumentation and soklfil vocals
Extremely easy listen. A summer breeze you could say. It just keeps flowing along nicely. The instrumentals are slapping and you can tell they are really having fun. Score: 80 Art: 70
These are such dope looking dudes. The talent here is insane. Great vocals and production. That Lady is so awesome to hear in full. Really liked the song Sunshine as well as the covers.
All the songs fuck. Summer Breeze is amazing. I’ve heard a lot of these songs but never knew they were by the Isley Brothers. 9/10
4.25
7,5/10
Great instrumentals, smooth vocals.
Lots of soul, very funky.
Fun and a nice break from the albums offered over the last week or two.
Simply put, it's hard not to dig this album. A ton of these songs have been sampled, many are immediately recognizable as singles, just good feelings and good music. Not much else to say!
High four from me, a truly electric album that just sounds really great.
This is amazing! Just scratches the right itch for me. I love the sound, the synth playing is unreal, and they somehow took Summer Breeze and matched it, and went even further. Huge fan! 4/5
Really good
A pretty good record IMO. Nothing really super thrilling but it was def great music and I would def put this record on again. Great musicianship. Great sound. Very funky. Excellent bass work throughout. Great vocal performance also. A lot of covers on this record.
I like these guys
Funkadelic baby
Knew a couple songs from the album but the depth of the non-hits allowed for wonderful submersion into music
3+3=4 Cool funky album with some classics. I might go and listen to more Isley Brothers after this one.
Great, funky album! Really enjoyed it. 4/5
first listen smoooooooth
Great jams, didn’t know these guys did so many of these songs.
Catchy, has a dreamy funk soul quality to it. Surprised I knew most of the songs. 4/5
Funky
The whole album is great front to back! Not something I'd typically listen to and will maybe only revisit the standout songs however beautiful album in almost aspects.
Underrated
Great guitar work. Never made the connection that "I" by Kendrick sampled "That Lady" until listening to it today. Would rate 9/10.
groovy baby
Really good album. Enjoyed it a lot - Will need to check out more stuff like this, I've listened to some 70's funk/rock but there's a deep pool to dive into. "Summer breeze" is certainly the highlight of the record.
Good album, happily listen again.
7.9 pretty groovy
Smooth
This was really good! I recognized a couple songs which was nice, considering I didn't think I knew The Isley Brothers. I liked this combo of soul, funk, and disco. Really, I like anything up-tempo, but the super duper 70s-ness of this was a pleasant bonus.
Awesome funk album. One to dance to
Infectious and funky. That lady is by far the best but the whole thing is good. A high 4.
Cool soul music. Who's that lady.
Classic soul. Highly influential, too
A laid back and relaxing soul/funk album, it is fun to listen to.
A jizzy tissue stuffed into the pocket of an old man having one last look at the rotting corpse of his wife as he buries her in his backyard.
This is just an all-around classic funk album, although ‘That Lady’ hangs over the entire album as being substantially better. Astounding guitar work on that one with a great outro - one of my favorite songs of the genre. However, the rest of the album is still great, with another favorite of mine being closer ‘The Highways Of My Life’.
Great
Leaving all the sorrows and the pain There's no love between us that remains Although you are the one You're not the same So the other side of the road Can only take me back home Now this is actually an album that everyone should hear before they die. Some of the best funk of the decade, packed with great tracks. 4/5
Defo a 4 or a 5, sounds great
Such a great way to start an album. Love the vibe it hits you with. Actually before you even hear music you get to see this magnificent album cover that oozes COOL. Ok one thing I hate- Track 1, the hi-hats are so loud and panned like 90% in the left ear. It's a little grating and annoying to have something that is consistently the fastest element of sound being played (8th notes and more!) only being heard in one ear. Music is great when it is panned well. I'm a firm believer in panning beyond mono as an immediate sound-enhancer. Unfortunately, when done in this manner you get this unbalanced sort of sound, and the right ear feels empty compared to that super consistent and driving left ear hi-hat. It's also so loud in the mix that I heard this on speakers before even having to check on headphones. Song still Slaps though. Track 2 - I have mentioned it before but I'm a firm believer in track 2 or 3's on albums being upbeat / uptempo. There's something about that (roughly) ~3 to 9 minute mark of listening to an album that I think is really impressionable and regardless of the genre I think it often benefits the artist for listener retention if they have some kind of exciting material in that time frame. This album has a tough-love sounding ballad on track 2 and I actually really enjoy it. Maybe because the first track was so grooving and bouncy that it filled that space for me. - Why not let that guitar solo happen at 2:06? I wanted to hear more! To be fair though this was a cool choice in using misdirection. - Damnit the hi-hat is panned super hard to the left on this track as well. There's some real R&B classics on this album. "Summer Breeze", and "That Lady". I really enjoy the flow of the album too- just easy to put on and enjoy.
Ekki eintómir bangerar, en margt mjög gott.
Otroligt bra och otroligt nära en femma. Någon låt som var rätt trök men nästan allt svänger nåt så in i nöken. Längd på 38 minuter är optimalt.
This album is an undeniably funky good time. And it's concise! Unlike so many 70's funk/soul/disco/dance records that go in for self-indulgent musical showboating and overwrought production. I really like this, it's a fantastic party record.
Very cool guitar solos, funky and soulful
8/10 really enjoyable songs and nice to listen to in the background
Sunny opening and very listenable funk throughout. Songs were different yet cohesive. Fun, would listen again!
classic funk/soul, seems appropriate for listening to in the car
Fun soulful tunes.
N-Isley done... ...I'll get my coat.
Noice
Very jammy. Loved it. I already rated this I don't know why they are asking again.
I always liked the sound of Isley Brothers singles from the 70s, they had such a unique sound, particularly Ernie Isley's unmistakeable guitar playing. There are some absolutely brilliant songs here - Who's that lady? Summer Breeze and especially the sublime Highways of My Life. Great stuff
So fun
Best Song: Summer Breeze. The song feels like the ecstasy of a summer breeze. Light and rolling, but with just heavy enough guitars to give it some substance, and a pace that feels like summer could end at any moment, and you've got to enjoy it while it's here. Worst Song: Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight. Not bad, but after that heater of an opening track it was difficult to pump the brakes hard enough to appreciate this one. Overall: Exactly what I come to this list for. A band I'd only heard of, with a brilliant combination of funk, soul, dance... Musically talented with incredible vocals. Somehow it is able to sound both retro and modern at the same time. Really, really good.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: That lady, What it comes down to, Summer breeze
A funk rock classic & the full realization of the Isley Brothers band. Essential record.
I listened to this album when I was in college (when it came out). I had forgotten there were so many hits on it. I had also forgotten that everything was mixed with mid-range prominent for playing on car stereos back then. This album is the definition of funky.
Pretty good
There's some nice smooth, soulful tunes in here, along with some real funky jams and big hits. I really like the funky psychedelic space guitars.
Ok 4. At least
Going trough this list has mainly confirmed myself things I already knew and accepted about my music taste, but it has revealed some other things as well, one of the most important? I looove Funk. I just do! And more with such a groovy album like this
Some classic tracks. A nice easy smooth listen
bit weird of a listen because this album has been sampled so much, i’m not sure if that’s bringing my score up or down. overall good, but not super special
Fonky.
Just a good time, gorgeous vocals, pristine production, strong lyrics. Sits comfortably between soul and disco, giving a surprisingly original sound, that, paired by the brothers' obvious talents, builds an obvious confidence that shines through even on its weaker moments. There are a couple of those, mostly due to the kinda shoddy tracklisting routine, depriving the album of a sense of complete consistency, but the record sure as hell is solid.
Really solid album. Everybody knows That Lady and Summer Breeze, but everything else is good, especially the closer on the album. Would listen again.
I can't believe I didn't know any Isley Brothers until now. The first track was on makeup commercials, of course. The covers that they did are VERY funk-ified. (I mean, did we need a funky version of "Listen To The Music?" It would appear so.) The weird thing with the "Listen To The Music" cover is they took the bridge out, which I was expecting and then never heard. "Summer Breeze" had to be covered, because the original is so... whitebread. The guitar throughout, man that fuzztone is lazer-sharp. It will cut through steel, that's how precise it is. I feel silly that I hadn't these guys before. Going to have to find more of their stuff now!
The Isley Brothers are better than I remember, though I probably never remembered which songs were theirs. Better comes from their musical abilities; I remembered them as crooners but there's a lot of electric funk to this album. They can still sing, lots of good vocals and harmony. All in all, it's a weak 4 because despite their highs (the first 4 tracks including That Lady and You Walk Your Way) I didn't really love their remakes of Listen to the Music or Summer Breeze (too forced).
Loved this album, such good soul and composition
Super fun album; cover versions of Listen to the Music and Summer Breeze are pretty fantastic. Love the gnarly fuzz guitar tone!
Liked this one. I didn't realize some of the songs were theirs, but I knew them already. 3.5/5
INCREDIBLE guitar playing, really astronomical stuff. It all sounds pretty good, even if it’s slightly dated. A-
Favorite album so far. Fun, soulful, great music to start the work week.
This is just great. Really fun to listen to, That Lady and Summer Breeze are unreal and should always be listened to in Parts 1 and 2.
tremenda guitarra fav sunshine, that lady
Really good, can hold its own with Innervisions
Groovin
