Competent R&R. 3.2
Don’t think I’ve heard any of these Elvis songs. Thought they were decent.
I have a theory that the popularity of Elvis correlates with the excessive consumption of jello salads, but it's too complicated to get into here. Also I still find it crazy that Elvis was drafted.
Elvis ilahduttaa..
Meh - I've never really fully drunk the Elvis koolade.
I have a strange relationship with Elvis' music. he is the alpha to a lot of my favorite artist's omega. without him, they would not be. most musical artists in the 20th and 21st century would not be. and yet, I am rarely impressed by his music. it's alright. it's not bad. there was nothing here that was bad. and yet, there was not a lot that I felt very strongly about either. the highlight for me, by a long shot, is 'such a night.' but the rest I could take or leave.
Elvis Presley stands for the fifties/sixties in America in the same way as the Korean War, the Vietnam War or Richard Nixon. But somehow it was also a time of new beginnings. Elvis Presley's music was groundbreaking for his time. He had an unmistakable and great voice. Nevertheless, my relationship with him was rather ambivalent. I didn't like many of his songs and the ones I did like were always a bit cloying. I thought his movies were horrible. His late performances and his demeanor made me ashamed. Only now have I become more gracious. Now I can concentrate on his music. And some of it was and is very good. Unfortunately, I hear less of it on this album. The only track I really liked here was Fever. In my opinion, there are better albums by Elvis. 3/5
does anything truly stand out on this? could i write poetry to this? n
It sounds weird to hear the Jazz standard "Fever" sung by a male. At least it is welcome change from the Rockabilly formula that was Elvis' bread and butter. The rest of this "comeback" album sticks to what made him famous in the first place. Some folks love it and still call Elvis "King". I'm more of a Buddy Holly guy myself.
This was just OK. There was much more interesting music being made in the 50s. Elvis could sure sing, but this batch of songs is pretty weak.
*Elvis Is Back!* is a fascinating album that showcases Presley’s ability to adapt and expand his sound. It’s an essential listen for Elvis fans and an interesting piece of music history. However, it lacks the revolutionary impact of his earlier work or the emotional depth of his later material. Still, as a comeback album, it’s a solid, enjoyable collection that proves the King still had plenty to offer.
It's just okay.
okay, not may favorite, but not a huge Elvis fan overall.
Fever was good, but a lot was forgettable
I'm not an Elvis fan, so it's hard to say much about what seems like a very Elvis album (and now my third from this collection), although I *will* say that this is infinitely better than "From Elvis in Memphis", so there's that. I kind of feel like the "1001 Albums" entry's quote of Elvis kind of says it all: "I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to." Sad but true, and doesn't really help explain why we have three albums by him, but thankfully this is my third.
solid Elvis album.
Enjoyable album, vocals are just fun to listen to. Obviously loses some points on originality. Also has some weird lyrics, like many of these old albums. Very consistent quality from front to back. I think the right Elvis album could be a four, but this is a three.
I grew up listening to Elvis so its all white noise to me at this point. Fever is great and gets me hot and bothered so thanks pal. This seems a little low energy compared to his catalogue in some places. Its okay, his impact is undeniable but I am noticing how much recycling he uses for riffs and song structure. Great voice though.
Elvis is fine. I’ve never been blown away by his music but I understand that he was groundbreaking and a maverick and no wonder he was so popular. This album was just fine. Fine fine fine. Thank you very much
I don't know how this album made it onto the list. His first album after getting out of the Army and all the magic is gone. His voice is still there, but the rawness and passion is gone.
Was not a bad album, but not one of Elvis’ most memorable.
Ok 3/5
Rating: 6.5/10 Starts off great, ends not so much.
"The Girl Of My Best Friend" is my jam on this album.
Can't argue with the talent and massive influence that Elvis had, and obviously he had some songs that have some great staying power. But as an *album*, I just didn't find anything here that wowed me.
Decent
Its Elvis?
Great stuff here, I was wondering when this listing was going to offer up something worth listening to again.
Yup. It's Elvis. Dead before my time, doing what others did before him.
I am not a fan of Elvis Presley. I respect, greatly, the influence he's had on so many of the early musicians I have very high regard for (Keith Richards, Paul McCartney... I mean the list is impossible to compile), so I do recognize that much of my disconnect is that I wasn't there to experience the insane impact he had on early rock and roll. Trouble is, I simply can't disconnect the late-era Elvis — with his gross hypocrisy about drugs, pure over-indulgence, and 14-year-old Priscilla — from the icon who set the world on fire. Not to mention his appropriation of R&B... I just don't relate to the music. But, I'll give it to him, dude can sing, and he was a maverick in so many ways that I'll go against my initial assessment of giving this a middling 3 stars. The album didn't thrill me, but I can't deny that Elvis had a gift for making music.
It’s late 50s/early 60s Elvis, it’s exactly how you think it would be. It’s fine and easy listening but not something I would reach for I don’t think
Won't somebody think of the children!!! It's amusing to think this caused moral outrage from parents, whose teenage daughters were swooning and screaming at the front of the stage. It really shows just how conservative society was back then.
Quite enjoyed this. None of his 'hits', but his voice is in fine form and the recording itself and band sounds great.
Reconsider Baby - bluesy and jazzy. Nice! Overall, very Elvis-y. Don't think I'll re-listen, but not bad overall.
decent
Sounds like Elvis to me…
I don't get what's meant to be so great about this album. Yes, his voice is incredible but surely this isn't his greatest album? As albums go, I don't see why this one deserves a place in the 1001.
Ba dum bum bum ahh music
I'm still not sure that I'm really an Elvis guy, but this one has an interesting backstory at least. Elvis got drafted in 1957 as he was starting to get big, and this was his return to recording after his Army stint. He literally was back. The whole thing is perfectly fine, and it's pretty much I would have expected out of a 1960 Elvis album. I just find him a bit boring on the whole (even compared to some other stuff from roughly the same time). He's got a great voice and I can see the appeal back then, but it just falls a bit flat to me. I also didn't think there were really any songs that stood out too much here, and it doesn't really have any of his popular singles. Anyway, it's ok, but that's it for me. Favorite song: Such a Night Other: Make Me Know It, Fever, The Girl of My Best Friend 10/22/24
A few bangers.
Goes alright, like the Bluesy/Country stuff.
The cover of Fever and The Girl of My Best Friend are both so fucking good. This didn't sell me on becoming a big Elvis fan but I enjoyed it a lot, I listened to it twice. Probably won't come back to the whole thing through hence the 3/5 but those two songs are fucking great. I like this a lot more than the more manic high energy classics I've heard like Hound Dog which I find kind of obnoxious, ballad-y crooning Elvis is where it's at.
Can’t say I’m a huge fan of Elvis, his ‘thing’ has never really been for me. That being said, I appreciate classic stuff. He’s a monumental figure. This album breezes by. I can’t be too mad about it.
not bad, nice sound.
Very mid Elvis record. Not an Elvis fan beyond the hits. The mixing is superb though like wtf. 3/5
As a colleague of mine said, it's nice to hear another side of Elvis. Fever is certainly the standout for me.
Oh yes he is. I enjoyed this but didn’t love it? So maybe it’s a 3… but that doesn’t feel right. 3.5?
As Elvis goes it's solid and enjoyable, but I'm not really a huge Elvis fan
an OK Elvis record
I liked it because it didn't contain any hit singles. I wasn't familiar with a single track from it, it was like discovering Elvis for the first time. Having said that, it didn't come through with a lot of strength.
I like Reconsider Baby the most and it’s maybe the one that feels more of a traditional Presley song. I am not convinced Presley does R&B and Do Wop better than other folks back the.
Starts a bit slow not the Elvis I wanted but it’s getting better the further in I get
Finally Elvis~ even though he's an asshole...
It's ok
I hadn't heard of any of these tracks before playing this album, so it was a chance to hear fresh Elvis with fresh ears, and I quite liked it.
Where'd he go?
Why is there so much Elvis? I know he is an important figure in rock music but it’s a bit outdated now don’t you think? Nevertheless, the record has some very good songs.
It said that he died on Wikipedia but I swear I saw him officiating a wedding in Las Vegas yesterday!
This album is supposed to reflect a more mature Elvis, fresh from his military service and ready to show a new side of himself. However, I find that his music still doesn’t resonate with me, mature or not. Elvis and his music aren’t necessarily bad, but they don’t strike any emotional chord with me. The standout moments on this album are the country, blues, and jazz elements, which were interesting, but overall, it wasn’t compelling enough for me to want to listen again.
Good mix of rockabilly and slower almost croon-ey
Found this to be an underwhelming album from Presley. A lot of standard doo-wop and blues, which was okay, but not a lot of energy from him. 3/5
Not his strongest record. Some covers and all that. 3/5
Love Elvis but this wasn’t anything special
Soothing voice
A little blues, a little rockabilly, it is unmistakably Elvis. It's fine. It's good. I feel like we, as a culture, have had such a heaping helping of Elvis in our collective conscious that even the songs that don't really hit make us pine for a ""simpler"" time. Call it 3.5. Peggy Lee's version of "Fever" is better, though I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of force Elvis puts behind it. Favorite tracks: "Fever", "The Girl of My Best Friend"
Fairly standard Elvis. Not bad, but not his best.
Classic Elvis vibes. I do enjoy having it on, but nothing stands out as being great.
his voice is very nice to listen to. yet the only song that I remember from this list is 'Fever'
Kinda of a dowop feel, a few to many slow songs, but he was good!
🎧THANK YOU Elvis for coming BACK
Best Elvis album on this list. Definitely like early era EP the best. 3/5
Ah, Elvis Presley. This album announcing Elvis' return to music contains his signature sound, though perhaps it is over the top with songs like "Soldier Boy" and "I Will Be Home Again." Still, it's amusing that he didn't skip a beat and even came back with a better sound. Still, this album doesn't contain his most well known songs. It can be hard for me, a millennial, someone who grew up with Elvis already dead, to fully understand the significance of what Elvis did--because so many musicians have built upon Elvis' accomplishments and done much grander things. Someone had to start rock music, and that was Elvis. That being said, the album was a slog to get through (and I love fifties classics like this!), but I have respect.
Not his best album, my favorite is still "Fever" on this one.
I don't think I heard any of this album before, which surprised me. I liked it. Didn't blow me away but solid tunes all the way through.
Decent, like his debut and Memphis Elvis more tho
This is Elvis for sure
A very solid Elvis record with vocal performances that had clearly matured with his intentional work while he was deployed in the Army.
Not nearly as banging as Live From Memphis, but yeah. It fucks
good solid album, its easy likeable but not impressing. nothing lifechanging for me but also easy to listen through without the urge to skip songs
Nothing particularly offensive or memorable. It's possibly getting the 3rd star because I only had to listen to 31 mins
Very classic Elvis. A couple of good songs but I’ve never been a big Elvis guy. Lyrics are a bit cringey looking back at them.
3.5
Kinda lacking on hits. It's good, not he's a singles guy.
Not a massive fan of Elvis but can’t deny his talents
B- Make Me Know It 3 Fever 3 The Girl Of My Best Friend 3 I Will Be Home Again 3 Dirty, Dirty Feeling 3 Thrill Of Your Love 3 Soldier Boy 3 Such A Night 3 It Feels So Right 3 The Girl Next Door 3 Like A Baby 3 Reconsider Baby 3 Just pretty boring, but sounds nice.
short & sweet but a little too low energy, repetitive in feeling despite its length
Fever The Girl Of My Best Friend Dirty, Dirty Feeling Such A Night
rip elvis
A bit more of his crooning than I’d prefer. While I see its appeal, especially among the young ladies at the time, I definitely like his more upbeat stuff better. Not a lot of the rockabilly feel on this one. But I suppose it’s a relatively solid album.
I enjoyed this more than the first Elvis album, but not by much. Still don't get what all the fuss was about.
It’s Elvis, kinda speaks for itself. Not always my vibe but still solid.
A pretty solid album, on the cusp of a four. The final song "Reconsider Baby", comes off as a tepid lift of far better blues songs and reminds me of how much the entire affair owes to artists who were not given the same chances as Elvis.
Doesn't feel like this is Elvis' greatest album, as I didnt recognize any mega hits here, but its overall solid. I had never listened to a full Elvis album before but he has a pretty good range in his voice beyond his normal Elvis twang. The album felt average on the whole and I think my favorites were Thrill of Your Love and Reconsider Baby.
catchy music but i dont think for me Elvis can ever get above a 3 for cultural appropriation.
One of the greatest performer / artists ever, but this album is pretty average. Still worth being on the list because it’s Elvis.
The usual med-period Elvis material. I loved this stuff as a teenager, but it does nothing for me now, except to bring on a faint nostalgia.
Im simply not am Elvis super fan. Ots always nice to hear and good music but kind of outdated to me with some exceptions. Album is ok but nothing special for me. He has better ones.
Just Another Elvis
It's Elvis. A few standout tracks. Good production. Tight backing musicians.
OH FUCK. I’ve never listened to Elvis because he’s my mother’s most hated artist. Time to give him a fair shake I suppose That sure was an album that I don’t remember anything about. It was fine
Every time I see an Elvis album cover or poster or old video - I can't help but think about how cheesy this guy is and how only my parent/grandparents were really fans. But, then I listen to the album (which, are still kinda cheesy) and can't help but get sucked in. He did have a great voice and a certain swagger. He's iconic for all the right (and wrong) reasons. He's the world's first true pop star. Even this album - which doesn't contain any of his "hits" - is a solid album and fun to listen to.
you couldnt release this today. theyd say “elvis already released this album in 1960, how did you get into my office??” thats what made elvis so special. he knew to release his music before he had already released it.
He's back! ...but he isn't perfect. It doesn't help that none of his huge hit singles are present here. And concordantly, a key element of pre-army Elvis energy feels keenly absent. None of the tracks are particularly memorable except the three openers (Make Me Know It, Fever, The Girl of My Best Friend). The two moods appear to be either "crooning with very little instrumentation" or "fast-swing-rock but lacking some energy". Don't get me wrong – it's still pretty enjoyable music. But it doesn't reach the heights of his pre-1960 work I'm familiar with. Lots of gentle, "classical rock" harmonies going on in the backing vocals. Pretty cool. The bass and particularly the drums are mixed decently, but written simply, without letting their respective players shine as much as the vocalists and solo instruments (e.g. sax). Feels a little gramaphoney (granny music?), but what can you do, prior to the earth-shattering revolution of music in the 60s? This is the kind of music that sold well, and Elvis was fully aware of that. 3/5 Key tracks: Make Me Know It, Fever, The Girl of My Best Friend, Dirty Dirty Feeling, Such a Night
3+
Nice to hear some deep cuts from Elvis to be reminded he wasn’t always the caricature he has turned into.
Will just watching Priscilla skew my listening experience?? Can’t deny his absolute butter vocals. I wish I could get past caring that he is just a performer and didn’t actually write anything. I love that this is only 32 minutes long tho because Dude is not an album artist.
The King he is
Goddamn did Elvis write a lot of the exact same song. It’s a pretty GOOD song but i wouldn’t listen to 12 of remixes of a band’s one hit wonder in a row, and this is only marginally better ;)
relatively bland. like it’s fine but i expected more from “the king”
fínerí, rennur ljúflega. safn laga ekki samhangandi verk. 3,5
Highly polished, boring, and nowhere near as raw or fun as his debut album.
listened 2x. 3.1/5
Ausser feverrrr
The ballads aren't all that interesting but the uptempo songs are all quite good and I'd be happy to revisit.
It's fine.
Quintessential Elvis Presley. This album really captures his character and musical ability. Not someone I listen to regularly, if at all, but this is a really nice record.
Great voice. Definitely look up all the original songs, though.
I'm surprised that I enjoyed several songs on this one. I can see how Elvis was so alluring for his generation - he's really smooth.
Nice vibe to album, what I thought Elvis would sound like which was pleasant but no major surprises in terms of stand out songs. Best was Fever which he didn’t originally sing.
Kinda enjoyed this, much more than other Elvis I've had to listen to. I'm going to be generous with my 3
way better than the last elvis
It was fine! A little too much of the same throughout the album, but nothing bad.
i mean, it sure is elvis. fine to listen to, but milquetoast as always. 2.5
Alright but idk if he earned the exclamation point
Fun stuff.
This was the best of the Elvis albums I've listened to so far. The first half was good then it went downhill from there. Not a big fan of the music, but I can tolerate listening to it.
Elvis doesn’t particularly excite me, but this is one of his better albums that I’ve heard. Great vocals here
Fun. Glad I listened to a full Elvis album. But I think I’ll just stick with his greatest hits from now on lol
(5,3/6) Gave me a "Dirty, Dirty Feeling" Kind of sticky album with a way to much "baby kisses". Obviously another time but still, it's Elvis the pelvis... (1,2,5,10,12)
Post Army Elvis stumbles a bit with consistency but still has the pipes to crank out the blues.
Like him or not, Elvis is pretty good. Listening with modern ears it's refreshing but doesn't do anything for me to push it above a 3. I did enjoy my listen tho Fav songs - Fever - Soldier boy
Elvis takes a stab at an album. Thing is he's a singles artist and the hits really aren't there. Not entirely his fault. The rock album wasn't really a thing for another 5-6 years. It's a decent attempt. The two drummers (D.J. Fontana and Buddy Harman) are excellent.
Earlier poppier Elvis. Some good songs but not exactly my cup of tea
"Elvis is Back," the 1960 comeback album by the King of Rock 'n' Roll, marks Elvis Presley's return from military service with a collection that encapsulates the essence of Elvis in a brisk 32 minutes. Across 12 tracks, Elvis swings from the drawling cover king we know to delivering wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am performances that are short, serviceable, and, well, fine. Standouts like "Make Me Know It," "Dirty Dirty Feeling," and his sultry take on "Fever" showcase Elvis's unparalleled ability to make any song his own, proving the album's fun quotient is undeniably high. Yet, despite its moments of enjoyment and historical significance as Elvis's post-Army reintroduction, "Elvis is Back" doesn't quite ascend to the zenith of his discography. It's an album that, while showcasing the King's versatility and charisma, leaves the listener wanting more of the raw energy and innovation that characterized his most transformative work. In the grand scheme of Elvis's illustrious career and the vast universe of music history, this isn't the album I'd enshrine in the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." It's a testament to his talent, no doubt, but more a footnote than a chapter in the story of a legend.
Elvis.
Classic
To me, the real magic of Elvis was is in the rock-a-billy/ country western songs he recorded with Sam Phillips. Elvis sang those songs like he was born to do nothing else. Styled with R&B and a hint of Ray's electrified gospel, he and Sam made something that no one had heard and that people all over the world are still listening to and imitating. And Elvis sang it with such confidence that it instantly sounded wholly realized and...obvious. He joins the Army and upon returning they decide that he should make, basically, a doo top record ?? The engineering is BRILLIANT. It is one of the most beautiful sounding records ever. Fever is a fantastic track for auditioning hi-fi gear. But the magic of Elvis barely appears (Dirty, Dirty Feeling and Such a Night) and even then feels constrained and watered down. The remainder of the album sounds even more constrained as if he's imitating the crooners. And while it's a decent imitation, it isn't magical the way his Sun sessions were.
I know he was an excellent performer and a very successful money machine, revolutionary at the time. But truth is he didn’t write the songs and, overall, I thought I’d like it more. [0140/1001]
3/5. Mostly a collection of normal do-wap songs that could be done by any male artist from the time. Fever stands out as dark and dangerous, bookended by silly love songs. No bad songs, just nothing too exciting. Feels like Elvis is playing it safe save a few. There are some strong vocal performances but it's not amazing, still enjoyable.
I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to him again, but I can see why he blew up. Some real catchy jams in there with a good variety of sound.
Fever is an amazing song, but I think this album is kind of spotty.
Sounds like Elvis.
Never really listened to Elvis before. He's kinda fun
Elvis is definitely an essential listen, and this is a pretty solid album. Really enjoyed "Fever".
Muy bueno.
A good album to pick up. I can't even imagine how much this would have been loved when it was first recorded. Elvis always souonds old and tired to me but of course, that's because I heard it coming out of tinny pub jukeboxes growing up. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
A solid album and the session musicians are super tight and incredible but there's nothing too special about this album. I did enjoy the cover of Fever, however there wasn't really anything new added to it so could probably do without.
Wouldnt listen over and over again but it was pretty enjoyable. Had never intentionally listened to Elvis before and it was nice.
Elvis pretty much be Elvisin' all over the place. I find it interesting that for some of these songs, I've heard them before in a hundred different interpretations. But that's just how it was back then. And ayy, the album's pretty much fine. I doubt that I'll come back to it. Probably quite influential.
Early doo-wop Elvis, still lots of fun and one of the best of this genre. He does a cover of Fever on this album that's really good. Overall a fun listen but nothing too musically interesting/new. 3/5
Elvis - definitely a classic. Enjoyed some of the songs he made throughout his career but this album - just a so-so for me.
Nice reminiscence
Very samey but it sounds like fun was had
Blind album, know the artist. Typical Elvis, did not expect much else and he was never a favorite or a dislike.
Elvis is pretty solid. I enjoy the music. The lyrics are sappy shit but whatever. I enjoyed this way more than the last couple albums I gave 3s to but it doesn't deserve a 4.
Meh it's fine, sounds just like the other elvis album on here, no big stand outs.
then he shidded and he farted
The sound quality, musician quality, Presley's singing are all top notch. He especially shines on "Fever". 3 yellow Post-it's out of 5. 🟨🟨🟨
Very good. I understand why Elvis was so popular
Average Elvis shenanigans, some great songs, some unmemorable ones, but always pleasant to listen to
Something that was considered so radical and subversive at the time feels so tame and bland now. He was a good covers artist but other early rock and roll somehow stands up better. An album for your mum here.
Confession: I've never actually listened to Elvis besides some of the iconic hits, and I never really liked them all that much, honestly. So it's nice to listen to Elvis apart from a top hits. And the first two tracks have changed my opinion on Elvis. I love all the varied styles and genres in the album, really shows a depth of talent from Elvis.
Den helt gode rock’n’roll pop, ren fløde, mangler måske lidt album-format
The King did a lot of albums. There's a couple of hits here but the rest are fillers and covers.
This album is pretty good. This is the first time I listened to Elvis and he does have a great singing voice. I like both the slow songs and fast songs, which normally doesn't happen, but there were still some meh settings I didn't enjoy. Overall it's a decent album, didn't blow me away but didn't hate it. 3/5 Favorite song: The Girl of My Best Friend Worst song: Such a Night
Well I don't think I knew any off this album but it was nice enough! I think I do get a bit fatigued with lots of songs singing about girls in the same way, but they're dedent songs aren't they.. it's Elvis!
Pretty good, just more Elvis stuff really!
Pretty upbeat and fun
Not a super interesting album, good vocals and some of the songs were catchy
Elvis dobar, album nis posebno.
Elvis is Back, apparently from his stint in the military. The architect of the modern rock and roll style of music brings a whole record of songs that were stylistically more pop-ish than prior records. Still found it more or less forgettable.
Music from this era is heard an interpreted differently for me than music made from the late 60's or early 70's and onward. Music from the 50's and early to late 60's was literally made just to make people feel good. It wasn't made to make an artistic statement or expression, really. Every once in a while, I'll put on old stuff like this in the house, because it is relatively peaceful and good for having in the background. I can understand the impact, even though it's not something I'll really seek out often.
It was an enjoyable listen and interesting from a historical perspective but not an album I would actively seek out again
Pas mal Pas son meilleur album
This inclusion feels like completely unnecessary lip service being paid to the king. I mean yeah, he made his mark on the rock n roll landscape, and he sure was handsome. But this isn’t his most important offering, none of these tracks are iconic Elvis songs in my opinion. It’s fine, it’s an enjoyable listen, but to me, it’s taking up the space a better album could be occupying.
It’s Elvis.Nothing else really.
Nice oldies
“The New York Times called the record "drab and lackluster"
no wonder Elvis was able to make like three albums a year, all the songs sound the same - 6/10
this was enjoyable but nothing special. i didn't know any of the songs beforehand and this album doesn't really have any of his big hits. ehhhh we can do better favorites: fever, dirty dirty feeling, such a night
Not my favorite Elvis album, but it's Elvis.
It's Elvis singing bluesy rock ballads. I only recognized Fever, although I've heard it done by other artists before. Overall it was pretty standard, it didn't have any of his rockabilly hits like Hound Dog or Jailhouse Rock, just slow blues ballads. It was ok
Perfectly adequate Elvis, not nearly as powerful as other albums
ay first Elvis! :) 3 stars September 1 2023
Not much sparkles
Title should have been Elvis Is Back (At The 7/11). I sure do like Elvis' rock more than his pop. Side 1 had me considering a 1 (which I would have bumped to 1 since it's Elvis a 1). Fever is a good song but it sounds so much better sung by a female. The second and 3rd songs on Side 2 rescued the rankionh and I also liked the two bluesey songs that finish off the album.
On this album Elvis dialed back his edgy rockabilly sound and moved in the direction of pop, complete with its doo-woppy back-up singers. “Fever” being offered up as the feature song is pretty lame since it had been a #1 hit twice in the prior four years. I’m not fond of the ballads, but they demonstrate Elvis' vocal range, and there are a few bluesy tracks near the end that quite good. I especially like the last song, “Reconsider Baby” with its adventurous sax solo. Speaking of vocal range, I had to check the liner notes to see if they brought in a guest singer on “Dirty, Dirty Feeling”. It’s interesting that it took 40 years for the LP to be certified gold.
Solid stuff. There's a bit more variety here than I typically associate with him. Not exactly my thing but I can get behind it.
He was back :/
When I first seen this album come up I honestly rolled my eyes. Then I looked at the track list. Fever, that’s one I know. Not by Elvis, but I know it. The album was a real surprise. Great stereo sounds. I was really impresses. Best tracks: Fever 3.5
3.5
Da king is back
Good in places. Meh in others.
It was all very elvis
Despite the gross nature of the artist, didn't mind this
- sounds like Elvis for sure - definitely some jams
I never saw myself as an Elvis fan, but I liked this more than I thought I would - wasn't too slick
Olipas eheä albumi! Vaikka biisit ovat aikansa tyyliin sinkkumaisia ja eivät kaikki hittiainesta. Fever hyvä herätys alkuun. Varman kuuloista Elvistä.
Maybe because I have been steeped in traditional blues instead of Elvis but I just think it's ok, even for a white guy there are better out there, and this album didn't even have a hit song on there.
Elvis är ju Elvis. Dock inte en av hans främsta plattor.
Exactly how I would expect Elvis to sound. Good bluesy, funky and a bit sexy. Enjoyed how much like Pharaoh's backing singers the backing singers sounded. Bab showaddy wah!
Kind of nice that it's almost entirely songs I haven't heard before, but still very much "an Elvis album".
Not bad.
Your grandmother definitely felt some magical things while listening to this.
Early Elvis and you can see why he's going to be great ! 3*
Very good. Not sure at this stage I could tell different Elvis albums apart though.
OK, not my favourite Elvis album
Not sure how I often I will listen to this. However, I’ve never really listened to Elvis outside of what was on radio or TV. It really surprised me how much I enjoyed this.
solid effort by one of the original true “rock stars”. highlights: “fever” “the girl of my best friend” “soldier boy”
I've never been a big Elvis fan, but that was pretty good. His voice is certainly smooth, and I like it better with slower songs. It's hard to explain, but it feels like (to me) many of the same bands/artists of this era performed in a way that removed them from their listeners to some degree. Maybe it's the new remastering of the tracks, but Elvis does seem to have a quality of intimacy to his performance. There's a feeling of closeness that I don't get from a lot of other artists of this time. Maybe that's why all the girlies got the vapors.
Not my favorite but not bad. It’s Elvis.
The way overused fadeaways drive me nuts, but his vocal talent is undeniable. I really hope dirty, dirty feeling is a joke... lyrical content in general brought it down to a 3, musically it's a 4.
just a bunch of normal Elvis songs none of his best are here
Solid album that is actually not a compilation. First one back from the army and he’s trying new things. A couple snoozers but overall a success.
Glad Elvis could come back. Really missed the guy. Elvis was better at making great songs than great albums. I’d say this one is no different as there were multiple songs that are good. The album just doesn’t have a consistent feel. Elvis hits all of his styles in this and it’s an enjoyable album. Hard to go against the king but this was 3 star stuff. 7.7/10
Элвис не мой жанр)
Hmmmm
Best 50s album we’ve heard for sure. (Nvm i guess it’s 1960 but still). I like how these early albums always seem to be short. This album had like 2-3 bangers that carried, other than that it was pretty mid but at least it’s more interesting than the other early albums, by a lot. It’s still dated and still doesn’t hit like newer albums do for me and my enjoyment factor will always suffer because of that. I gave buddy hollys album a 3, and this is better than that. But I’m not sure that this belongs with the 4s either Best: make me know it, the girl of my best friend MMM: THE WAY SHE WALKS🤩 THE WAY SHE TALKS😋
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, beautiful and charming Favourite song: Track 3 - The Girl of My Best Friend
Elvis, innit.
It’s okay the songs are solid elvis is the king (obviously) but it’s nothing special. 3/5
Probably the best Elvis album experience I've had.
Yeah I suppose he is. Not a bad listen. In strong voice but as my son James pointed out, when I told him that Elvis was the most famous rock 'n' roll artist, this isn't rock 'n' roll
6/10. Yup, that was an Elvis album alright.
Elvis is Elvis! 6/10
This is what happens when you don't write any of your own material and let the label pick your songs. You end up with a weird set of tracks that just don't seem to go together. How you put out an album that goes from the sparse, smoky, club jam of "Fever" to the saccharine oo-wee-oo of "The Girl of My Best Friend" is beyond me. That said, this might be my favorite Elvis record to date. He's at peak vocals here. There's a maturity to the performances that wasn't there in earlier records. And the recording quality took a HUGE leap forward with this first stereo release. Legitimately great production values for the time. That said, it didn't age all that well. Shocking nobody, it's full of sugar-coated chauvinist ideology. "But it was the 50s! You gotta make allowances!" Well, it's not the 50s now and I sure don't. The greasy sexism lost it a star for sure.
On this overall decent record nothing stood out that really caught my attention.
Solid 3, decent vibe
That voice on Fever! It really shows that this is from before people put huge amounts of thought into the overall flow of an album.
Fever is my favorite track. The rest of the album is good but most of the tracks did not capture my attention and seemed kind of generic.
This was okay, a little too slow for me at times. However there were a couple of quicker and more rocky songs that were just a bop to listen to. Favourite: Dirty, Dirty Feeling
Good
Overall not bad music but can't help to feel a bit disappointed coming from such a acclaimed artist as the album itself was short and enjoyable but lacked anything new or standout
Kinda like it but feel like there's too much of a ballady vibe in it and probably prefer Elvis's faster pace songs
This is not the music I usually listen to but this is so fun! Tbh the slower songs are not really my thing but you can really vibe to the upbeat ones
Classic, but ok.
Nothing amazing, but fun. Some of the ballads drag and some of the up tempo numbers seem to recommend domestic violence. Hey, it was a different time. Don't think it'll be on heavy rotation, but I don't think I've ever listened to a full Elvis album before.
Elvis is a fantastic singer. This album feels like a mixed bag, though. Some of the songs are pretty great but others just feel like dated tween pop.
Fun and exactly as expected from The King. Great voice, good mix of rock n roll, pop and crooning. No enduring classics, but good short listen.
Inte så kul med blueslåtarna men det är ju Elvis. Moget, varmt, mjukt och självklart.
I mean it’s Elvis there is a reason he so popular
3.5
It’s strange how some things/people loom so large in the culture, but you can easily go 50 years without actually directly experiencing them. I believe this is the first time I listened to a full Elvis album, and probably the first time hearing any of these songs. It wasn’t quite what I expected.
Average. Few good songs but mostly boring.
Classic Elvis, definitely my preferred type of Elvis music. Interestingly though, there wasn't a song on this album that I was familiar with (at least not Elvis's version). I thought all his early albums were chock full of hits, but apparently not. Still great though. 3 stars.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Liked some of the ballad-y songs and some were fun to listen to, but some songs were just an okay and some didn't get my attention at all. I think this rock sound is just too old for my taste.
Not bad, very easy to listen to. Pretty neatly written pop stuff. Classic-sounding album, great vocal performances. Standouts: Fever. Soldier Boy, Such A Night, It Feels So Right & Like A Baby
Not my favourite Elvis album, but still decent.
I was an Elvis fanatic as a kid. But I only had the greatest hits collections. Hearing this collection of deep cuts (like, not a single hit here) reminds me that Elvis was just another crooner of his time. Nothing here really hits the way any of his hits do. They're just pretty well-done renditions of songs written by others.
Good
Can't go wrong with Elvis!
Smooth.
The king is here!
Pleasant 3/5
Elvis did "fever"?
Faves: Make me now it (there's this quirky sound I like), Fever, and Dirty, Dirty Feeling
Elvis is back, but he left most of his rock n roll at home.
the king is meh
i think when the vibes are maximized, this album is really really great, but it’s easy to look over if not.
I’ve never listened to Elvis before. Not that exciting
Not very interesting
Not my style but I'm sure I would have understood the hype if I was around in the 60s!
Elvis is Elvis innit
Highlights: his vocal performance might be the best form of his career. He was able to sneak a couple of anti-establishment songs onto the record. Other than that, it's pretty standard Elvis fare. if you like Elvis you'll love this record. If you aren't an Elvis fan you won't find this any different than his other stuff.
Just what I would expect from Elvis. Pleasant to listen to at times, chuckle-worthy at others. I can see why he was so popular.
Wonderful voice but the songs on this album aren't that exciting
He may have been the king of rock n roll but his albums tend to be one or two hits, a few interesting side steps or variations on a theme and then filler that would only really satisfy die hard fans, and this is no exception. Don't get me wrong, I love Elvis' voice but his music is best sampled on compilations.
Elvis is a great talent. I grew up listening to a ton of his albums because my grandparents and uncles/aunts loved him. It's weirdly nostalgic for me even though I personally never really listened to him on my own. Sitting down now reminds me of them and I can see why he was popular. Great voice and super easy songs to have in the background while you'r'e doing anything.
It's alright. Horrible cover of Fever aside. Elvis really wasn't an album act.
After a hiatus of 2 years in service, Elvis supposedly came up with new ideas to try out in his material, and i can sorta see some of it here, but for the most part there's not much interesting here. Out of 12 songs, hardly any of them are really bad; they're just nothing we haven't seen before whether by Elvis or other pop musicians. On the plus side, there're a lot of genres here, and the average song is less than 3 minutes, so it's hard to get bored by the time the record's over. The biggest highlight is Elvis's increased confidence, fully in control of his sound, although he does sound unenthusiastic and bored in several tracks. "Fever" adds nothing to the original, with the instrumental trying to mimic the original, and Elvis sounds like it's his turn in the classroom to read. Favorites: The Girl of my Best Friend, Such a Night, Like a Baby, Reconsider Baby
'Fever' was far and away my favorite song on the album. I'm not a huge Elvis fan, but this was a really good album.
The song pickers for this album certainly wanted to share the royalties around. A different writer for each one. Does this make for a strong coherent album. Probably not a consideration at the time. What we get is a fine showcase of Elvis' range supported by quality musicians. Enjoyable but not essential.
He is great. I'm just not a fan. Really difficult to score
Not something I'd listen to again but it was okay
Elvis returns after three years in the Army-and consequently has lost much of the edge that sent a shockwave through American culture. His voice and band sound just fine, but the songs here offer little in the way of excitement.
not what I usually listen to, aber eigentlich geil. potentielle 4 if I get into it more?
Back from the army, i guess. I'm not sure what all the fuss was about when it comes to Elvis. It was a 50s and 60s thing I guess and the freeing of the pelvis which must have been so shocking at the time.
A fun Elvis record, but not much is remarkable besides his rendition of 'Fever'. It's nice and short, sounds lovely but rather forgettable as a whole.
bon rollet. 2 prefes: soldier boy com a soft i dirty dirty feeling com a més animada, pero tb make me know it i it feels so right gust personal encara q objectivament sigui millor q aixo: 3/5
The King!
Easy listening, quite short.
Always a good day when you can listen to a new Elvis album! I was unaware of most of these songs but was enjoyable none the less. And a great album to wrap up this week. What’s wild now is we just watched the Elvis movie so it put this album into some brief context of when he returned from war.
Here's that old school Elvis style, when he was still a young gun driving people insane in a lot of different ways. The title hints at the fact that this was his first back after going into the army, and it was clear that he still had the sauce. This album's a bit lowkey, doesn't have a lot of the classic hits we know and love, but "Fever" has always been a favorite for me, both Elvis's rendition and the one by Peggy Lee. Enjoyable album, though still waiting for the best that Elvis had to offer. Favorite tracks: Fever, Soldier Boy, Like a Baby, The Girl of My Best Friend. Album art: Elvis is BACK, they exclaim. Pretty simple portrait of a soldier boy. 3.5/5
I like Elvis this album didnt blow me away but it was still alright
This is fine. Elvis without any visual is distinctly average for me.
Solidno
Solidan album, slušljiv, takoreći zabavan - u tom smislu.
A decent album by a great singer that does not write his own material. It contains only a few bangers (Fever, Such a Night, Reconsider Baby)
October 26th 2022. Day 4. Fun to listen to my first full Elvis album. Quite alright.
This is an interesting album. Yes, it is Elvis, but clearly one that is trying to find a fan base that has moved on.
Very bluesy record, sometimes to its advantage, mostly not really unfortunately.
This is a good album. But it does not demonstrate what made Elvis an icon. It lacks the energy and swagger of his early live and television performances and albums. And it is missing the showmanship and experience of his later years as a Vegas bandleader. If this were the only Elvis Presley music to which you were ever exposed, you’d likely (and rightly) think, “why is this guy such a big deal?” That would be a shame because at his best, he was The King.
Elvis is Elvis and all, but this album just really didn't do much for me.
decent cant go wrong with elvis fav song: fever (he plays it a bit mellower it suits him)
Favourite song: The Girl of My Best Friend One for the karaoke: Fever for the finger clicks One for the car: The Girl Next Door Went a’Walking Really enjoyed it. Came out 1960, but had proper height of the 50s vibes. Just didn’t enjoy it quite as much as Elvis In Memphis
Lovely little rockabilly/blues one this. I have rated this more on the fact it’s Elvis and not so much the album itself so the standard is different for me. I was close to a 4 but 3 it is. One of my favourite Elvis songs is on here though ‘The Girl of my Best Friend’ ‘Fever’ has to be the karaoke one.
Elvis is prolific. So many good songs. 149 billboard 100 songs! That being said, this album was produced for the 'Greatest Generation'. It's full of ballads instead of rock. Fever is the only song worth listening to.
Coming from someone who was born not long before Elvis took his final bow, my view of The King is definitely skewed by the over-the-top, sweaty, Vegas impersonator Elvis, so much so that it's hard to imagine him EVER being a big deal. This album from 1960 is, like so many other artists on here, the first full Elvis album I've listened to. I started out hating it, ended up loving the second half. It's probably not coincidence that, how do I put this delicately....Elvis starts this album as a white, gospel-inspired singer (some of the tunes remind me of the horrible "Elvis sings the Bible Hits" or whatever, probably with Charlton Heston reading Bible verses in the background - at least that's the commercial I remember....), but by the end of the album, he's neither of those things. With "It feels so right" and "Reconsider baby", The King is channeling his inner Ray Charles (isn't the album we listened to a while back from about the same time?). And "What a night"?? It must have been SUPER racy back in the day. Add in the hips, and you've got parents freaking out left and right. What's holding me back here is the originality of the whole thing - I don't have a good feel for how much of this is actually Elvis, and how much of this is taking Black music and making it acceptable. Still, the first half of this album merits 2 stars, and the last half 4 - for a solid three average.
I don't get it man, I don't get it.
I think I was not in the mood for this album, so might have to try it again. I like his voice and his style. The album is good but no song jumped out for me.
