"!Óigame compay! No deje camino por coger la vereda" (De camino a la vereda) "Yo soy el árbol conmovido y triste" (¿Y tú qué has hecho) Increíble pero me sé como la mitad de canciones de este disco sin tener recuerdo de haberlo escuchado nunca. Un beso a Elíades Ochoa, rey.
nice latina music
Light 4! Guitars slap on this
Another fantastic jazz album! I call it jazz just because this feels like Latin Jazz. Apple is calling it Bolero. Either way, I’m digging this. I love the drum beats and the chorus lines. I felt like I was allowed into the Buena Vista Social Club. The album cover is perfect as well, fits the music just right. This is the kind of stuff I can listen to on a summer day, sipping on a drink at the beach or just hanging out with friends. A really fun album to have on. As with many Jazz type albums, I don’t have more to say than that and that I loved it.
This one was a great Latin music album. Worth it!
Compay ... etc
Vibe
Great example of Afro-Cuban jazz. Pueblo Nuevo is stinky, but every other track is great. 8/10, didn't know they had 20 members.
What's not to like!? Hazy, sunny Cuban music in dreary British January.
Concept album!
Great recording, many latino great songs and themes, Cuba is in many ways linked to México and we’ve always loved the BVSC
Cuba
Have you seen Chef?
Beautiful Latin sound. Didn’t have as strong as a finish as I wanted, but a pleasure to listen to regardless
Very good Cuban sound
Damn good
Writing this review last minute so it'll be a shorter one. This album has some serious classics on it! There's many songs I've heard on this before but I never knew it was this band. These songs are much more traditional and folky than our previous venture into the afro-cuban msuic scene, so this was a unique experience. This is a solid album with a lot of cuban "bangers" that create a nice and pleasant atmosphere, while expertly executed, left me wanting more artistically. But overall, I had a great time listening to it.
I feel it
Just happy vibes.
Good album, a bit long and samey. I love the salsa vibe from a lot of it. Not amazing but solid
this is peak cuban music i really felt like i was just chilling in havana and i've never even been
Pleasant latin music
one part mariachi, one part classy as fuck dinner party music.
I'm not sure if I like this album because it's just different from so much of my music. Or if it's really that good. I think it's good.
Move your feet to the Cuban beat, unless you don’t have any feet
An alum I already know. Beautiful. I'll enjoy getting to know this again.
Finally, a jazz (adjacent) album! This one’s a classic for sure, brings me back to my Afro Latin & Carribbean Music course I took at Columbia.
Chill. Vibes. Feeling the roots.
8/10 FT: Amor de loca juventud
3/1 Great album, wish I was there. Standout Tracks: El Cuarto de Tula, Dos Gardenias, Veinte Años, Candela, Amor de Loca Juventud, Buena Vista Social Club
Not sure if living in Southern California has giving me a new appreciation but really enjoyed this lively album.
almost walked in front of a bus while listening to this. a trauma album for me.
Byoona vista
It's fine, it's good, latino jazz and all that.
Its good and outside my music taste. I like it y era un bueno tiempo.
Well... It's got all the hallmarks of something I'd really love, folk songs, guitar, etc, but something about it just isn't clicking, which is disappointing. I like it. I don't love it. But I really like it.
I don't know Spanish enough to follow the lyrics, but my overwhelming feeling listening to this is sadness. A lot of the music sounds like it should be happy, but it just isn't. Good background music for dinner, but too sad to listen to at work.
Favorite song: Chan chan
I like how the songs in this album bring awareness to problems in Cuba, the lyrics are meaningful. I also like the instruments used in the songs. I'd give this 3 stars.
Don't know much about this style of music, but a very chill listen.
summer vibes but 3/5 stars!
Good album
Very good Latin album. Didn’t know they really only released such a limited about of albums. That makes this kind of special. 3.9/5.0
This was good fun. The tracks sound similar to me and by the last quarter it sounded repetitive. But it was enjoyable would definitely put on again
Great vibes and very fun. No particular track stands out to me, but I would happily listen to it again. Good background music (honorific). Rating: 3
I enjoy the music even if I have no idea what they're saying.
Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Candela Date listened: 22/06/26 Listen when: Making dinner in villa in Spain/Italy Love this generator because never would I have listened to this. Fun listen but after 10 songs I needed a break.
Thank you for another horizon-expanding listen. When I recognized the second track as being from the “Training Day” soundtrack, I knew everything would be all right...
Sounds exactly like I expected Buena Vista Social Club to sound like. Good grooves.
It was decent. I can see why it's on here. And I can see why it became popular when it did. Not an album I'll listen to regularly, but it's enjoy it it were on.
Fun
A club with a beautiful view.
Feels like vacation but too long if your not on vacation
Enjoyed the instrumental side of the music.
It’s probably not really fair or relevant for me to rate this album. It’s not something I would seek out to listen to. In the right setting i.e having a mojito in a trendy bar or eating Latin food it’s perfect but driving to work on a Monday or doing the house work or sitting in the local boozer on a Saturday it just does not translate. I can appreciate the quality, the musicianship and the vibe but it’s not sit down and actively listen music to me so i can only rate it so high. 2.5
Pleasant enough background music for certain settings. I personally find it challenging to actively listen to it though and to critique it fairly, though musicianship is obviously excellent. I do like the general vibe it creates.
A solid showcase of Latin music. The sounds are smooth, crisp and clean. A nice change from the usual suspects on this list.
Only thing missing was a mojito. Great album, enjoyed the listen.
Not much to say. Like it.
I enjoyed the album. Most memorable song for me, "Amor de Loca Juventud".
Ok
I enjoyed this. The music is good. I would say it’s maybe a bit too long and the first handful of songs all blended together to me. 3.5/5
It’s ok. Pretty bouncy. A couple songs got really close to country though.
Not for me
i liked this way more than i expected
Fun change!
It really transports you but for me it mostly becomes background music, which is not a bad thing. I wouldn't consider it a must hear but it wasn't too bad of a listen either. Though i will probably forget it.
Not my thing, but solid
Prolly great but not my thang.
Didn't really care much for the first half of the album, but the second half felt more interesting and grabbed me more. Still, it just didn't quite click with me
4/10
So nice! I listened to this one back in high school
Lovely stuff.
Reading the story of how this album came to be might be more fascinating than actually listening to the album. I don't speak a lick of Spanish, so I couldn't appreciate this lyrically, which did make it harder for me to concentrate on listening as there was less to grab hold of. That said, despicable my lack of familiarity with world music, I could tell that the individual Buena Vista Social Club members were very talented instrumentalists, and the music itself was enjoyable, and I think a few more listens would be rewarding, but this project doesn't lend itself to relistening.
Nah
6/10
As background this is great - never felt like it was dragging, never felt anxious to move on. Listening critically, there are some great tones in here, especially in the first song where you can almost hear the delamination of the guitars. It makes me want to check out the documentary. But will I listen to this again? The answer is no. Not because it's bad (it's most definitely not) but the language gap means I have no idea what they are singing about which makes emotional connection hard, and the style has a vibe and feeling but it's not a vibe or feeling I'm ever in the mood for.
7/10 Favourites: Dos Gardenias Candela Orgullecida ⭐️
album was good just didn't think it was in my style so i didn't love love it but i still think it deserves a 3 from me. did like the vocals and the instrumentals though
More nachos!
Fun evening because I did 11 km with a bike while I listen to this album at 11pm. I wanted to listen to this album for a long time. I have saved two songs before I listen to this album. I found them in a different playlist because I was chasing a specific vibe so it was in a playlist someone made. I absolutely had big hopes for this album, but it didn’t satisfy me so much. It was fun, but I’m giving this album at three. I’m excited to listen more of their work.
Not my cup of tea, but I can understand the appeal if it’s your culture. Given the absolute shit I’ve gotten on this list recently (only one album in the last 10 scored even a 3) I’m going to plus one this bad boy on the grounds that I actually managed to not skip any tracks, and it’s not metal from bum fuck, nor anything from the damned UK.
Pleasant background music
"Not in English" FUCK YOU. i cant even begin to express how thrilled i am for finally FINALLY getting another album thats not in any way shape or form related to anything english or american or whatever. i know thos idiots wouldnt include themselves if i just said english theyll only think that the brits are at fault for everything. and yeah i know that this album is american too(shocking i know cuba is in south america so its an americ country), but again the americans only consider themselves american. So I'm pretty far removed from this culture cuz im eastern european, but we do blast some classic latino music at weddings so i know how to appreciate this genre. one of my dreams in life is to go to a latino wedding. from what i've seen, its kinda like our weddings but different. so if you got any of those coming up please PLEASE dm me. Actually getting to the music, this is nice, groovy, a pleasant change of pace from the ABSOLUTE SHIT i had to listen to on this list. It also isnt a diversity pick for the sake of diversity like other foreign albums on here. It's actually deserving of its spot and im truly glad for that. It's not something id listen to out of the blue, but its a delightful listen and im pleased that i got to hear it. I dont think id have ever got the chance to listen to this if it werent for this list. Orgullecida and Murmullo give me Spongebob vibes in some partsfor some reason. Other than that this album is either on party mode, chill or kinda sensual tunes and i love that. I practically could hear Dos Gardenias being played in a Bond movie. im not really into this specific genre but it is fun i cant deny it. great album. i could easily see why you would give it a 5 if it is your thing. Fave song(s): Dos Gardenias, El Cuarto De Tula Least favourite song(s): Buena Vista Social Club
Could go for some peri peri chicken
i'd like to go to cuba some day
Have had the CD for decades. Certainly appreciate their musicianship. And at the time, it was nice to be exposed to music beyond American pop, rock, jazz, classical. I don’t listen to them all the time, but it is fun music to get you going. 3.7
In a similar vein as the early 1001 albums on the list with Cuban sounds but I prefer those albums with their more upbeat approach.
big 3
Chan Chan - 2/5 De Camino a la Vereda - 3/5 El Cuarto de Tula - 3/5 Pueblo Nuevo - 4/5 Dos Gardenias - 5/5 ¿Y Tú Qué Has Hecho? - 4/5 Veinte Años - 2/5 El Carretero - 1/5 Candela - 3/5 Amor de Loca Juventud - 4/5 Orgullecida - 5/5 Murmullo - 3/5 Buena Vista Social Club - 4/5 La Bayamesa - 5/5 I loved the vibes, very summer-esque. I enjoyed the jazz moments within each song and the vocals.
It was fine.
Funny that this one landed right around Cinco de Mayo. I enjoyed it. It was very light and upbeat. Makes me wish I retained more from my four years of high school Spanish.
I liked the first half much more than the second half, the up beat songs were my jam. Still a very good album all the way through.
Unfortunately not a Spanish speaker, but musically has a good sound, easy listening.
Seems to me I know someone who was really into this when it came out. Pleasant and fun. Sounds great too.
cannot help but shake my booty. relentless. but nice. so so.
Best Song: Chan Chan This is one of those where I do not feel I can give it an accurate review due to a language barrier. But, I hate saying that because I know that there will be gatekeepers screaming, "you're ignorant! Listen to the music!!" Yeah, that's great. The music is fine but I don't understand a word he is saying. It could be a song where I am jamming out to a guy singing his allegiance to a furball his cat just puked up and that is now a new world overlord. I'd have no idea. So, before pitchforks come out and accusations fly about my hatred for non-English speakers, that is not true. I have no problem with non-English speakers, but I also am not going to put it on my playlist just to appease you! Anyway, this is a 3/5 since the music is good but I refuse to accept your cat's vomit as my new King!
A classic, good musicians, interesting songs at times. But I can't shake the feeling of listening to dinner music, during a Spanish holiday. Says more about my limited musical knowledge and views, and less about the Buena Vista Social Club probably, but there you have it.
Really enjoyable! Felt like I was at a tropical beach club or vibing in a Caribbean restaurant. I don't know that I'll play this on heavy rotation or anything like that because it's not the music. I generally listen to, but I'm glad I learned about it through this project.
Rentoa kuunneltavaa ⭐️⭐️⭐️
te amo latin jazz
It was a fun experiencie of cuba, viva cuba
Cool album
Thoroughly enjoyable
This isn't something I'd normally listen to, but it's not bad. It works well as background music. I'm not sure I'd want to actively listen to it for long.
Very good
Good chill Spanish vibes
This was cool and different I liked it
Utrolig fet første spor, men ganske kjedelig ellers
Not bad! It was overly long but I enjoyed it. Not a genre of music I often listen to and wouldn’t be upset to hear it again.
Sounds pretty much like what you’d expect Cuban music to sound like. Not my cup of tea, but I can’t say I hated it. It’s fine. I didn’t find much to be excited about, but at the same time, there wasn’t really anything to hate. It’s a passable album. A bit too simple and relaxed for my taste.
It's pleasant. Runs a bit long though. 3/5.
A vibe, but did not speak Spanish
6/10 If I could dance, I'd dance to this. A bit repetitive for my taste but good background music for studying.
Lovely playing.
Nice to hear somehting else than pop and rock in the list. Chill experience that was pleasant to listen to. Best track was Chan Chan.
3.5
Love this gem, was beforew my time but I remember listening to music like this my aunties house
Pretty Good album. I didn't understand the lyrics but felt good to listen to.
It was a great! but sadly I don't speak the same language.
121. good
not bad but i didnt add much
Really lovely and transportative. I admittedly don't know much about this kind of music, but I'm glad to have listened to this.
Just excellent music & guitar work throughout.
5 April 2026. 2pm. I love the ambiance so much, my mom approved it too lol 8/10
muito bom ouviria outras vezes, mas me cansou
could say i enjoyed it but i felt like this was kind of repetitive and boring
Had a long review that of course got lost. Never heard of album or band. Cant really say too much abt the songwriting as it’s in Spanish but there are some really catchy choruses and the background music in all the songs is really good. Great horns, great guitars and some good piano/bongos mixed in too. I think some of the song go on for too long but that’s my biggest complaint. It’s VERY easy on the ears. A nice relaxing listen. No absolute bangers perse, but no horrible songs either. I was disappointed by the title track. Not because it was bad but because I was expecting it to be the best on the album which it was not. With that being said , as a whole I enjoyed the album a lot more than I initially thought I would. It’s just a really well made album musically. 3.4/5.
Really enjoyed these tunes. Not sure if I'd listen again, but I like them.
Not really my type, but it's definitely an album with great songwriting quality.
I could have listened to the whole album, but I also could listen to two songs and tell you that I’m sure this is great music, but outside of the context of dancing it does absolutely nothing for me. Props to the Spanish/Carrib culture for their outstanding contribution to music, food, dancing, and just overall awesomeness.
I've heard this before and even seen them perform live, and it's probably a better experience in a theatre than on the stereo. I prefer to listen to this kind of music as part of a compilation, abd at an hour in length, the whole album outstays it's welcome. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Superb ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 275 Already owned : 62 Purchased : 15 To buy : 2 Nope : 196
Standouts Pueblo Nuevo Buena Vista Social Club
This is good but not what I would listen to all the time
A 7/10 album
Very much a time and place listen. Who would have guessed a cold, wet and windy spring evening in the UK wasn't ideal timing. One for a BBQ
Finally, a Spanish language album!! It was just fine. A little sleepy for my taste. Ah well.
This was a nice listen. I enjoyed the variety of moods I experienced listening to the ballads, love songs and rhythmic dance numbers. It took me back in time to the 90s when I was hanging out with Tony and Maria.
Enjoyed it, but not my usual go to.
Ta bien
I can see why it was so we'll received but to my untrained ear, it all sounds the same. It definitely made my body move though which is why enjoyed many songs. Great album, just not for me.
Classic south/Central American vibes - 7/10. Sure it’s good, but not always my vibe. Sometimes.
Very famous album and story. Nice enough to listen to and well played and produced but a bit like background music for me.
Enjoyed most. 3/5
I remember going to the show when they toured. Interesting that Cuban music was hip for a minute there. I still like the album, especially Chan Chan and Dos Gardenias. It's a very high 3 for me.
Fun! Best Song: Chan Chan Rating: 6.0/10 Stars: 3
Another album I've heard a gazillion times in my life. Loved the movie, owned the CD, heard it in every cafe everywhere. Listening to it 25 years later or so doesn't pack the same punch but still a beautiful lyrical album
Of all the non-English-speaking albums so far, I’ve probably enjoyed this one the most. It did transport me to Latin America, and probably because it was a sunny day, it was pretty uplifting. Still, not something I’ll listen to again, mind. Bit long and samey.
Fisting you is easy baby
Not what I expected!
A few songs sound like they’re straight out of Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul and I mean that complimentary. The music in those shows is fantastic and this really does remind me of it – not every song but a few towards the start of the album. This may be the best non-English speaking album I’ve had so far.
Still a great listen.
Good background music. Nice for beach listening. Probably won’t go back to it often.
Svängig bakgrundsmusik. En trea.
Zin in tapas
Very pleasant, not a genre I listen to much but felt like a good example of it
Well that was unexpectedly pleasant! Just booked myself some salsa classes. I phoned up and the lady said "How flexible are you?" I said "Well, I can't make Tuesdays" 🕺 I'm here for another 769 days 😐
Very enjoyable!
Really quite pleasant on the ears
i dont understand a single word, but i like it. fun. I love the piano. it kinda feels like those albuns you listen one time and like and listen at family parties, but wouldn't listen intencionally. at the end it gets a little exausting.
Imagine its 1958 and you are sitting at a table in a Cuban club watching a band playing. The band are good, the atmosphere is hot and people are dancing but you leave as its nothing you haven't heard before. 30 years later you wander into the same bar and the band are still playing, only this time everyone is wildly applauding them, you drink your drink, listen politely and bid the bar staff goodnight. As you walk out the music makes you remember 1958, and you reflect on what isolation does to a country, frozen in aspic with nothing moved on Still the band were fairly decent
Kinda got bored
Im richtigen Moment ganz cool
es nostálgico
Pleasant background music. Now I just need something good to eat and drink and maybe a beach.
Fun
I don't think it's possible to say anything bad about this album. But it's not anything I would seek out. Definitely outside my typical musical menu.
no me termina de cerrar su sonido
I do not speak the language fluently, so I can not give an accurate judgement on this album from a lyrical standpoint. That being said, this matters pretty little when the vibes for this album are so great. I loved the vocals, the musicianship, the energy. It's an incredibly fun listen, but I do think it drug on just a bit too long for my taste. Over time, it just begins to dull a bit and loses that great energy it had toward the beginning. These types of tracks would be a welcome addition to the album if they didn't take up over half of a 15 song soundtrack.
Haven't used to listen to albums like this but i guess it's a good album to listen to it in the summertime so i'm gonna listen to it again a little bit later, it's a vibe tho
Would give 4 stars if I was drunk off tequila. 6.1/10
I enjoyed this little trip to cuba. Maybe i should listen to more latin music with bad bunny rocking the superbowl
Ughhhhh, I SO wanted to like this. And I did 5 songs in. But then the rest of the album happened and it SLOWED way down... Could've been a contender. Instead, ended up with a solid 3/5
Easy listening, but many songs sound similar to each other. My favorite song on the album, Orgullecida, sounds like the instrumental they play when the "camera" pans over to Spongebob's house lol
It's pleasant and something new to me, but it feels like...just good elevator music. Slightly disappointed after the new-to-me high of yesterday's Baaba Maal.
Beautiful music but not really my cup of tea. All the songs started to sound a bit the same after a while
Felt like background restaurant music
Every single one of these songs was played in a Pier 1 Imports in the 90s. Fun album, but drags towards the end.
Music for a sunny beach or a night out
Enjoyable little album, no idea what they were saying tho
There’s nowt wrong with this lp. I’m sure it soundtracked many a West Sussex dinner party where 90’s ex-ravers congratulated each other on being multi-cultural and ate fajitas for the first time. The performances and musicianship are fine but I feel this has been toned down for the International market. I bet if you were a connoisseur of Cuban music you could reel of twenty or more better lore exciting records and I rather wish this list picked them instead.
Listened to this in high school and liked it then, but now for some reason I don't like it nearly as much. It's still good don't get me wrong, but maybe because I've heard so much more worldly music since then I don't find it as compelling. Having said that, I can see how this opened the door for many others in the 30 years since then.
A perfectly acceptable listen, but how in the world did this sell 6 million copies?
Opens really strong with chan chan and has a nice relaxed window into Cuban music but can be a repetitive at least vocaly
This album made me happy
Cool album, fun to listen to, though I don’t usually listen to Cuban music and probably won’t revisit it often.
Interesting, some nice harmonies but overall not something I would return to.
No. 358/1001 Chan Chan 4/5 De Camino a la Vereda 4/5 El Cuarto de Tula 3/5 Publo Nuevo 3/5 Dos Gardenias 3/5 Y Tu Que Has Hecho 3/5 Veinte Anos 3/5 El Carretero 3/5 Candela 3/5 Amor de Loca Juventud 3/5 Orgullecida 3/5 Murmullo 2/5 Vuena Vista Social Club 3/5 La Bayamesa 2/5 Average: 3,0 Nice listen, but not something I will seek out in the future to listen to again.
Słońce, taniec, ludzie. Fajne, ale nie moje klimaty.
Really enjoyable listen
I don't know much about this style of music. This was a fun listen!
Not my jam. Not bad background music
Pretty good but a lot of repetition which I’m not really fond of. Great instrumentation.
Not my thing, but still a decent listen. Feels very familiar despite never listening before. Not adding to the collection. 2.5⭐️
I just wanted to salsa, samba, and swing the entire time. Fun and entertaining, but nothing really extraordinary.
Beautifully performed and recorded with great care, but framed in a way that emphasizes nostalgia over spontaneity. The album feels curated for global consumption rather than emerging organically. Respectful and pleasant, yet oddly museum-like.
Although I've taken 4 years of Spanish, it's been quite a while. The bulk of what I use nowadays it to communicate with clients and their spouses in an emergency. But, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy this album. This album is relaxing, energizing, and a wonderful piece of work all together. Favorite Song: Pueblo Nuevo - Beautiful guitar melodies.
It was a pleasant listen, ive never really explored Latin jazz before but it would be enjoyable to listen to at any occasion, I will definitely give it another whirl.
Ampak, vem, da me čaka kubanska glasba. In da bo ok? But not for me. Ni quite the same effect.
3.5
I like this Latin style. In my family it is not very well appreciated.
It’s hard to say if this is essential listening for someone like myself who didn’t grow up with this kind of music. This does leave me with fresh ears to take this kind of music in. I did hear this way back when it first came out but it didn’t stick with me and upon hearing this again it’s not doing too much for me. I do recognize the great musicianship on display here, however it’s exclusively in service of some sort of dance music so the elements in these pieces are limited to a form that’s very nice and appealing to the general public. I suppose these styles just don’t seem to somehow speak to me and that’s a personal feeling and I suppose some of the problem for me is that it does crossover to a bland jazz style which is fine for most of the regular listeners out there but not for me. Once again I do acknowledge the great talent on display here so I would definitely have to rate this above 50% but I personally might not ever play this album ever again.
Correcto
I liked this album to an extent. The guitar fills in the noise quite well. I don't know about the singing on the other hand. Questionable for sure. Nothing to kill yourself about though.
I was really excited to check this out after reading some of the reviews. I can definitely hear why people love it, and the musicianship is solid, but it didn’t grab me as much as I thought it would. The vibe is warm and laid-back, which is nice, but it sometimes felt more background-friendly than something I’d actively seek out. I’m glad I listened, even if it didn’t totally click for me.
Pleasant yet with an undefined end.
Good listening
What a pleasant surprise from a completely fresh album I'd never even heard of before. It's always cool being exposed to music from other cultures that have made their way to the US, and I'm just sad my Spanish is so bad that I can't process the lyrics. Chan Chan was such a phenomenal start that may stay in my rotation for a bit. The rest of the album couldn't quite live up to the opener in my opinion unfortunately, but it stayed a fun listen throughout. The guitar melodies were wonderful, and the trumpet was always most welcome.
Don't get me wrong, the musicianship on this album is incredible. These guys are the real deal and you can hear it in every note. "Chan Chan" alone is worth the price of admission, and there are a handful of other tracks that really got me. But as a full album listen, it kind of washes together. A lot of the songs hit a similar vibe and tempo, and by the halfway point I started zoning out. It's a great record to throw on in the background, but I doubt I'll have the urge to listen to it through again. Respect the history, respect the talent, but didn't wow me.
seems good for films
I honestly love this music, and can picture myself sitting in a cafe in Havana drinking an espresso and enjoying this. I can't go higher than 3 stars because I can't understand a word they're singing and lyrics are the other half of a song/album for me. Sorry, not sorry. 3 / 5
I like listening to this because it’s out of my comfort zone
Favourite tracks: Chan chan Y tu que has hecho Veinte Anos Candela
Yeah, sounds like it always does. Just a little to long for me but a great album
Nice. Very middle of the road. No idea why this album was so hyped up at the time.
Feels like im on the beach in my tropico island very nice.
Miracha band was fire
Great cover, but you cant judge an album by that. Good concept too, but I remember listening to this in the 90s and being a little underwhelmed by it, and largely feel the same today. Enjoyable in parts but doesn't really have me mantong to take a deeper dive into Cuban Music.
This is a difficult one for me because it is at heart a compilation album and as such I don’t think it deserves a place on this list. That said it was a landmark album for me, introducing me to a broader range of music than I was listening to at the time of its release, encouraging me to learn Spanish, and was partially responsible for inspiring me to visit Cuba a few years later. I still enjoy revisiting some of the tracks on occasion, although it does meander and fall flat in parts. Enjoyable nonetheless, primarily in bite-size chunks.
Fun for a bit, then I switch over to Emotion 98.3
Radio espantoso
Pleasant enough, and I’m sure it would be lovely playing in the background with a ropa vieja cooking away, but I found myself getting bored quite early on.
Really enjoyable. I guess I like Cuban music! Will listen again.
Excellent musicianship. I really enjoyed the instrumentals and even though i don't speak Spanish I really enjoyed this album.
Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the rhythm! Listening to this album in a midst of winter felt like summer briefly stopping to say hello.
Fav song: De Camino a la Verada 3/5
I like the sound of this one! Fun instruments and a nice upbeat melody on the songs! I get why the keywords say Vibe because it is a nice time A really fun listen and good variety across songs. Definitely a good vibe and would listen again. Fav song: El Cuarto De Tula, love the rolling R's. Only one song got a bit annoying but I can't even remember which. Probably 3 stars
Another vibey one but I zoned out a bit too much with it
If I had a Cuban restaurant this would definitely be on the playlist. Can't say more than that.
Liked it more than I thought I would. A few songs made it to the favorites but not sure when I could see myself playing this.
This had a real moment when it came out. Personally I've never enjoyed jazz, which this has lots of elements of, and while it's pleasant, it doesn't really grab me. It works well as background music, but I doubt I'll feel the need to listen to this again and I'm not really convinced that this is a must listen, or even one of the best albums ever to come out of central america
This was fun, but felt a little generic.
Not my personal cup of tea but good for what it was.
good
Very much out of my usual listening with this one, I haven't delved too much into Cuban music but from what I've heard on this album I think I'd enjoy more later down the line !! not my favorite but a really solid album that I can imagine myself revisiting
It was okayy but not my type of music
Enjoyed it! But hard to finish.
medium
New music to me. Very technical and great use of instruments.
Funky
Cafe jazz. I really want espresso and the sun. “Social Club” is really telling its music to be enjoyed in a group of people. Very sociable background music for meetings .
Like the vibe; feels very movie like. Not my go to type of music but I like how energetic It sounds and it makes you feel some sort of way. It’s refreshing to listen to compared to pop slop. Track 2 hits
Listening session: january 1st, in my room and while cooking dinner Listened to before: no Thoughts: this album makes me want to go Cuba and dance on the streets on a hot night Favourite tracks: Candela, Chan Chan & Amor de Loca Juventud
I don't really have the context to rate this compared to the prior son/Cuban music careers of a lot of the people involved. It sounded okay and it has a pretty interesting story for an album so I think I will give it 3 stars for the story. I'm glad I know about it but I probably won't put it on of my own volition.
Väldigt fint. En klassiker. Men inget som får igång mig tyvärr.
i only listened to the first song. i cant really form an opinion for the whole album... but the song i listened to- "Chan Chan" was interesting. its not at all what i listen to, but it wasnt bad.
Bought back some good memories of the time I spent in Havana drinking Cuba Libres and smoking cigars. Fun times! Would definitely play this as a backing soundtrack to a themed dinner party. Probably not on my rotation for general listening though.
Good vibe
quite enjoyable
Very good!
Perfectly enjoyable music.
I've been hearing about this band for like half my life, I guess they're insanely popular worldwide? I was kind of down on this in the first half, it felt like merely-OK NPR-coded dinner-party latin jazz, without the fire of a lot of the genre... and it's true that it's quite a mellow listen overall, but the slow numbers, especially in the back half, contain some stretches of remarkable beauty and brilliance, so I see how it has earned its reputation. I personally like my latin jazz a little grittier and punchier, but that doesn't detract from how good this is in general.
How do you rate an album in a language you don’t understand? Musically I enjoy some songs more than others. It’s a perfectly fine background soundtrack but hard to give it a fair shake when I don’t know what they’re singing about. It’s a shame I can’t fully appreciate this legendary group.
Good vibes, good story.
very fun, great vibes, my only qualm is that most of the songs are extremely similar... and I'm not just saying that because of their genre, they like actually really blended together for me... and that started to make me mad so what could've been a 4 will become a 3...
I remember when this came out everyone went nuts. Its good, but not nuts good.
Enjoyed it, but not really my thing
Not my cup of tea but some good songs.
The power of friendship is strong in this one. The relisten value though...
these are not genres that i usually listen to. however, i enjoyed the experience, the musicianship is great and it was a rather engaging way to learn about a new culture. Cuba is really an uncharted territory for me. the listening experience is 7/10
Not an album I'd actively seek out to listen to, but a great example of music that evokes a time and place (even one that, as a white norteamericano, I have no significant exposure to). Great background/chilling music for the right vibe. El Cuarto de Tula, El Carretero, and Candela are my favorite tracks.
3.5 Cuban music in Spanish. Very fun, jazzy and upbeat. A couple songs without words, but most had words and made me feel like I was back in a restaurant in Costa Rica. Would be good to do work with it in the background
This album was a surprise to me! It isn’t something I normally would listen to. I enjoyed the listening to the instruments the most. It reminds me of some jazz pieces I played in high school.
ok vibes
see oli väga hea album mida õppimise ajal kuulata, suure tõenäosusega kuulan uuesti
Dude how cool would it be if I was on a tropical island instead of here where it's really cold Favorite track: Dos Gardenias
--Chan Chan...pleasant acoustic guitar. nice trumpet --De camino a la vereda...not really my thing. it's great background music --El cuarto de Tula...there's something sinister about this one. I like it. guitar gets a little dirty towards the end. not a criticism --Pueblo Nuevo...a fun piano-forward interlude --Dos gardenias...a sultry ballad. the trumpet compliments the voice in a wonderful way --¿Y tú qué has hecho?...another nice interplay between guitar and voice --Veinte años...a duet between a man and woman. dammit I need to learn Spanish --El carretero...the bass is simple in this one but compelling. This singer sounds like the singer from Gipsy Kings --Candela...hip shaker. love a good Caribbean trumpet --Amor de loca juventud...this is a delightful guitar jaunt --Orgullecida...another fun walk --Murmullo...like the harmonies here --Buena Vista Social Club...interesting but a little too chaotic for me. album is also getting a little long in the tooth at this point --La bayamesa...a fine closer. ready to be done
Ever since I hit the 1000 albums milestone, I’ve been trying to predict what album I’d receive next. As luck would have it, Buena Vista Social Club was my (incorrect) guess for yesterday. This must be what it felt like for Gary Hobson on Early Edition. I’d never heard of Buena Vista Social Club before I started this list, but I’m encouraged by the positive reviews that I’ve read. I’m not very knowledgeable about jazz or Cuban music, but I tend to enjoy the guitars and percussion used in Latin music, so I can’t imagine that I’ll hate this album. I found BVSC to be pretty fun to listen to, despite the fact that I’m not a Spanish speaker and that I don’t really have an ear for jazz music. As I expected, this album had some really good guitar playing and a variety of percussion instruments. I liked the conga and bongo drums quite a bit, but the udu drum was my favorite percussion instrument. I felt like I got into a groove pretty early on with this album, but the deeper I got into it, the less I was able to discern differences and style shifts, and the more things started to sound a bit repetitive to me. I still enjoyed this to a degree, but I didn’t get as much out of this as I got out of something like Kiwanuka. My plan going into this album was to pause the album after each song, and write down a few quick notes about what I’d just heard, but as the album progressed, I found myself with less and less to say. However, I do have some notes on three of the songs, which I have below: Chan Chan: The guitars and drums were excellent. It was a simple melody, but it was really beautiful. The trumpet kicking in took me by surprise, but in the best way. De camino a la vereda: The guitar tone reminds me of what I’ve heard in a lot of Latin music. It does a great job of creating a sense of place that I associate with Latin America. The lead and backing vocals sound really good together too, and I love that the trumpet made another appearance. There’s something that gently kicks in about halfway through the song (I think it’s the mbira) that really adds a nice touch to the song. Pueblo Nuevo: I was not expecting to hear piano on this album, but the intro of this song has me intrigued. There’s something very familiar about the main piano melody, but I can’t put my finger on it. I like listening to it though. I think it’s got a similar chord progression to Twist and Shout, but maybe I’m way off base with that. I enjoyed listening to BVSC, and although it wasn’t really the sort of thing I tend to gravitate towards, it did have some great guitar playing and non-traditional percussion elements that I thought were nice. Someone with a bit more musical knowledge than me will probably enjoy this more than I did, but that’s what makes this project so enjoyable.
Chan chan is nice
Did not finish it, but it was interesting. Will definitely go back to it if I want to listen to some Cuban music.
Oh I loved this, just genuinely beautiful.
Little bit hot, little bit sexy
Very pleasant, lazy, tropical jazz sound. Laid back, varied and atmospheric. Fantastic background track to an afternoon in the sun with a cocktail, but not something I'd necessarily want to sit and listen to for an extended period. Especially the last few tracks, which take a bit of a nosedive.
Not the album for a cold wet December morning in Scotland. Nice though
Musically it got me.. I could listen to that guitar all day.. Vocally it get's repetitive, it's almost an after thought.
Meh it was all Spanish
Not really for me style-wise, but still a fun listen. I put it on and enjoyed the vibes as it played in the background. It did run a bit long and felt like it relied a tad too much on the vibe/cultural pocket at times. That's probably hard to avoid when you put the number of musicians they had together to play music they are passionate about (which is a pretty cool aspect of the record in itself). Comparing it to another Latin Caribbean music album I've gotten on here, Tito Puente's Dance Mania, I preferred Puente's. His grabbed my attention more than BVSC did. I can't say too much bad about the album outside of my personal preference and tastes. If I was more into the style, I'm sure I'd have a better handle on it's quality. As it is, I'll rate it as solidly OK. Overall: 2.6/5
I'm quite between two sides, first Chan Chan is a masterpiece, one of my favorite song ever, the rest of the album is really great, well produced and got everything that I like, but not that fantastic compare to Chan chan. It's a very high 3, but the all looks a bit like just a folkloric album and not so much modern (like Chan Chan), Cooder's style can be clearly heard in CC and I don't really find it in the rest. But still so enjoyfull to listen this kind of music, it makes me want to be 40 degrees outside with a strong rhum cocktail and beautifull shore landscape
