Great
I can definitely see why some people call this a stellar debut album. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 5. Going into this one & seeing the line about “the best debut album since Oasis” on Wikipedia set the bar rather high. I’m not quite sure if they matched that bar, since I’ve never heard Oasis’ debut album, but they’ve created something here that I think justifies that statement, even if it’s tonally far different than what I was expecting. I really cannot remember the last time an album won me over this much on account of just vibes & soundscapes – the vocals do a great job of gliding on the instrumentals & pulling out some of the emotion, but the buildup on each track, and the cinematic feel of the whole thing, opening up the mind to imagery beyond just the lyricism, is what’s making this album really work for me. Every single track here captures a mood, whether it’s melancholy, loneliness, hope, or anxiety, and the production does a great job of making each track feel unique, despite how much of a similar ground most of them tend to cover. I can understand the idea of this album just being “ambient moody soundscapes” for one person’s ear, and if the cinematic buildup style they tried to capture doesn’t work for you, this album’s going to bounce off of you. I think that’s kind of a disservice, though – maybe it’s just because I listened to this with a full attentive mind & headphones in, but I found myself really captivated & enraptured by the world each soundscape brought me into. It’s not a direct 1:1 comparison, but my closest analog is “The Downward Spiral” in terms of effectively using sound design to convey a story – Trent Reznor does it better, don’t get me wrong, but this felt kind of similar to me. It doesn’t always work – I think a few tracks sort of settled when they could’ve gone into a higher gear, I think a few of the lyrics fall flat on some tracks and leave more questions than answers, and occasionally, the instrumentals or vocals get a bit drab or repetitive. However, when it does work, I think it’s one of those things that’s very easy to feel and hard to describe, and this album never once committed that cardinal sin of making me feel nothing. Ultimately, I really enjoyed this, and while I can totally see why someone might give it a 2 or a 3, I just felt so impressed by it, and I think it’s pretty deserving of a 5. I’m glad it’s on the list, and I’m glad that the 2000 Mercury Prize nominees haven’t given us a bad album yet. It’ll be really awkward if I don’t like Parachutes by Coldplay though.
Wow
It's quiet and calming and just interesting enough. Late, late night turning to early morning.
Very chill and solid. Feels like something you'd want to listen to around a campfire surrounded by friends, just has a very homey and comforting feel which works very well. All around a good listen, and nothing negative to say
Fantastic. Never heard of this band before!! And yet, a couple of the songs sounded suuuuuper familiar! I liked it so much that I listened to it immediately a second time, it’s just nice sounding :)
Elegant, evocative atmospheric rock (or post-britpop, as some may want to call it) that would have been a classic if there was any justice in this world.
One of the most powerful and poignant atmospheric rock album you'll ever encounter. Wonderful melancholic arrangements - a beacon for all lost souls.
This album is too good for the britpop? Let's call it post-britpop... When strong and melancholic songwriting meets hypnotic atmospheres. A masterpiece of its kind.
Usually when listening to an album on this list I'll check the Album Summary to get some context. I didn't do that with this album and was pleasantly surprised when I recongnised the opening track as one I've heard many times on a chillout compilation album. The album just got better from there and I was also familar with The Cedar Room. Apart from the two tracks already mentioned I also enjoyed the title track. I look forward to given this another spin.
Automatic 5 from me - I love love love this album! I was introduced to Doves as being former techno DJs that had switched to making indie rock but hadn't lost sight of the idea they were making music for people on drugs, and while I don't know how true that is, the end results are hard to argue with! There's a dreamlike quality to the album, the way the songs blend into each other, the build ups of euphoria and the cool downs on the other side, the samples adding texture - it's all wonderfully cinematic, which is one of the main things I look for in music. I am still pained seeing people compare them to Coldplay. 😆 Fave tracks - love the opening run of "Fire Suite" -> "Here it Comes" -> "Break Me Gently". Love the switchup of tone across "The Man Who Told Everything" -> "The Cedar Room"
Love it
This reminds me of car journeys home as a child. Nowadays this sort of music always feels like it's telling the end of the story and we're seeing what happened to all of the characters at who weren't the main characters.
I hate it when my eloquent notes from listening don't save and I have to remember what I typed. Anyway, started off setting a mood with Firesuite and held it through to the end. A great album well worth repeated listening.
What a super great Post Brit-Pop piece. I cannot describe how much this meant to me during early 00‘s.
I can’t believe this album slipped through the cracks for me. Back in the early 2000s, this was exactly the kind of music I loved. Discovering it now feels like I missed out back then. This album reminds me a lot of Moon Safari by Air, but with an indie rock twist and more structured songs. It has a sense of longing, with a lot of emotional depth. It’s very melancholic, dreamy, and atmospheric. This is definitely an album I’ll be playing more in the future.
Noel Gallagher pilled Brit goodness

I swear that the reason the upbeat dance band Sub Sub became Doves was so that they could write minor-key songs. But they're brilliant, a crashing comedown after the regrettable highs of Britpop, with dashes of Ride and Spacemen 3 and early Verve. "The Cedar Room" is the best track, I remember playing it over and over again when it came out. "If I told you you was wrong" is grammatically UNFORGIVABLE though. Still five stars.
Hard to believe this is a 90s record. With many of the cinematic, orchestral stylings of 2000s rock, this album feels very much ahead of its time. There’s a lot of really cool ambient and Shoegaze elements in this music as well. I listened to this record while driving the California coast, and it was very fitting.
Loved this. A bit moody but also has some real welly.
Incredible. Another perfect album for me. June starting off HOT
A super enjoyable concept album from a band I really should have listened to more before now. So many influences from 90s and 00s bands. Definitely going on my "must listen more" list, from now on.
Wow! How did I miss this group? Just an amazing sound!
Nice melancholy feel. Probably overrating it, but I did really enjoy this. Maybe just fit my mood perfectly at the time.
Well, I see why the previous Doves album was demoted from this list, as I am not sure two albums from this group are needed. But this was every bit as good as the other album. Happy to have one of these still on the official list. I loved it.
This is not derivative of Coldplay. Both band's debuts were released in 2000 and Doves were an electronic act called Sub-Sub before that, and were Badly Drawn Boy band members in between. And that's what makes the difference. Doves arrived with a bit of dance/groove built in from the start, and sound Northern and bleak and they are named after the imprint on a popular ecstasy tab. Whereas Coldplay were a bunch of posh London boys who had more in common with Travis initially before becoming the worlds most bland and therefore most successful outfit. This is one of my favourites of all time, it came out when it was all festivals and girlfriends and hot-hatchbacks and post-pub sessions and job prospects for me. It's mix of doomy atmosphere, driven percussive songs and grimly-fought euphoria hooked me straight away and has stayed with me since, even if all the other things mentioned buggered off ages ago. It's a well paced and atmospheric album too and works as a piece. The portentous opening, followed by a series of engaging songs that are in turns optimistic, reflective, swelling, and then coming down to earth with the title track before we are off to a forgotten night at the fairground with 'Melody Calls'. Absolutely in place 'Catch the sun' ditches the introspective and bitter-sweet tone that preceded, and blasts into the open sunshine for an air-punching anthem, even if we do seem to be only just outrunning the ever present storm clouds. The album ends with the wrung out heartbreak of 'Cedar Room' then ultimately 'A house' which hints at the studio fire that caused Doves to become Doves. For a lot of people this will just be another gloomy English guitar band album but for me it's a stone-cold, copper-bottomed, masterstroke.
didn't know them, intriguing and diverse album!
woah
Really enjoyed this. Ethereal
That deserves a second and third listen. I enjoyed the album and would listen through it again. I didn’t love every song, but I loved a few and liked the rest.
cool
This album was amazing. I unknowingly already had a couple songs in my favorites. Will check out their other albums.
Definitely something I would not have found on my own. Great relaxing music to help keep calm during a rough commute.
Loved this album--
Part Indie Rock, part Dreampop, part Shoegaze, part Madchester, part Triphop. Makes for a absorbing combination. I'd missed this (and Doves entirely) when it came out, but really glad to catch up with it now.
Could cure a headache
A hidden gem, such a good album.
Liked this, enjoyed it a lot.
10/10 I’ve heard this album before it’s one of my favorite 2000s alternative albums
probably a better album than their more commercially successful ones.
Man, I really loved that. All the things I love about Air's "Moon Safari" but with more structure to it. It's just such a good vibe from needle drop to record end. I'm so surprised at what a good time that was. Full marks.
5+ stars. Always loved this album
Aangename verrassing
I can understand how people think this is another boring UK indie band, but I've always loved them. My first introduction was hearing 'The Cedar Room' being played on JJJ radio in Australia, and from there I was hooked. As for the album as a whole, I really rate the way Firesuite gently breaks you into it, before Here It Comes and Break Me Gently. Catch The Sun is a favourite, as is The Cedar Room, also love The Man Who Told Everything and Rise. It's basically a great collection of songs if you take the time to listen and love them, so give it a chance!!
I actually had 3 songs from this in my mp3 library from a friend sending them to me years ago, but first time hearing the rest of the album and ya it was good too.
i’ve heard of doves. i never heard doves. i didn’t think doves sounded like this - crying our otherwise. i must have confused them with one of the many avian-monikered bands out there. pretty good. a little psychedelic. a little shoegaze-y. would listen again.
Not a perfect album, but there were quite a few good moments. "Sea Song" was exceptional.
tbh i was deep into playing mc while listening to this so i didn't get hardly any of the words, but that was a lovely somber and cool sound
Ah, their first album. A year ago, on here, I gave the follow-up to this three stars, finding it promising but ultimately unexciting and "a bit Wilmslow" (which I say with authority, having worked there for many years). So... I was hoping for a few more sparks from this, their debut as Doves. It initially came across a bit overly thought-out; you know: "let's start with an instrumental, it'll intrigue people and sound good when we walk out on stage". But it drew me in: wistful, catchy and just trippy enough. I definitely found it more interesting than album two. More Radiohead than Coldplay this time, thank goodness, and they even had some fun on Catch The Sun. It does feel a tad introspective, rather than conveying any artistic sense of desperation to put themselves out there (I might have seen Nick Cave again last week, cough). But, respect that they (two years younger than me) started plugging away after leaving school and determinedly made quality music for decades. I'll be nice and give it four this time.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. My introduction to Doves was Some Cities, which I also liked, so it was nice to finally go back and hear their debut. Lost Souls has a moodier, darker sound, but it never drags. The atmosphere is one of its biggest strengths, and the songs are consistently engaging from start to finish. I'll definitely be coming back to this one. It may not have as many immediate hooks as Some Cities, but it's an album that rewards repeat listens.
was not into it the whole way through, but the latter half really got to me. strengthened my already existing melancholy. very atmospheric and loved some of the synth work
This album is just so well produced and the melodies in each song bring something so well to your ears. Ambient and expansive, yet very polished in production. An excellent backdrop for my train ride back home.
The Doves are one of the great underrated bands, who have delivered strong consistent albums throughout their career. There are elements of Pulp it the fell of some of the songs and there is no mistaking it’s northernness. They combine the dark gritty side with a groove that wont be denied. Yes this album may lack some of the punch they delivered with ‘The Last Broadcast’ and ‘Some cities’ but it makes up for that with the atmospherics of tracks like ‘ Break me gently’ and ‘Sea Song’. ‘catch the sun’ shows they can also deliver more traditional catchy tunes and stands against any song of this ill. However ’the man who told everything’ is the real star of this album.
Atmospheric, early morning music. Meanders its way through almost an hour of mellow music which shows flashes of melodic experimentation without reaching any real or consistently satisfying height. Rated a four for the mood.
Strong start. Didn’t know this band at all. First track instrumental. Cool. Chill version of Oasis in spots. Chapterhouse Catherine Wheel vibe in spots. On The Cedar Room particularly, which is phenomenal. Do like a lot of this quite a bit. Some gets a little boring and unoriginal, but in large part a very nice listen. Think this is definitely better than average.
Slightly psychedelic in places I felt. A good listen
surprisingly chill. solid 7.5
From what I remember of The Last Broadcast, I think this debut is the superior Doves album.
𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘴 is an interesting blend of post-Britpop and dream pop. Doves create an album that feels spacious and atmospheric without losing its melodic core, giving the record a distinctive sound from the very first track. What I enjoy most is its understated approach. Rather than relying on big choruses or obvious hooks, the album gradually draws you in through its mood and carefully layered arrangements. The dream-pop influences add a sense of warmth and space that suits the songs perfectly. The album fits comfortably into the British indie scene of the early 2000s, but it has enough character to stand on its own. It may not be the most celebrated record of its era, but it’s one I enjoyed far more than I expected.
just a nice little rock album. It sounds pretty good, and the vocals don't overshadow the instrumentals
Review - my heart sank when I saw this is a British alt rock band of slightly after the britpop era. I already hate the britpop, how bad is the music that followed after with less cultural impact? Pleased to announce that Doves are a very good band! This album is great, they have interesting guitar leads in a way britpop never did. Not sure how I'd never heard of them. Will explore their discog further for sure. Score - 8/10 Need to listen? YES
This was strange but in a good way. Liked the vibe of it. May have to give it another listen.
very nice and british
One of the great records from the start of the 21st century.
Miserable and homogenous, and brilliant
plays like a sorta groovy spacey U2. slows down sometimes but always in a vibey spot that i dont mind. there are a good number of songs im really into, even the misses i kinda fuck with. favorite song is Sea Song or Rise. soft 4, just over the threshold of "i really like it"
Good album but a little overhyped
It's pretty decent for an album I was expecting to be subpar
Deserves another listen
A great new-to-me album!
I love the vibe of this album, but can not pinpoint the reasons I like this album so much.
This felt like the backing track to a House MD season in all the best ways. God that show nailed its song choices
Really impressive debut. Extraordinary production for the year 2000, great mix of hi-fi and lo-fi sound. Towers, I don't know, over acts like The National, or Muse, or other 2010s indie folktronica fucks. The big weakness here is the songwriting simply not being up to snuff; though there are some excellent tracks here - gets a bit dull, innit. Four flat.
finally_some_new_music_gordon_ramsay.gif is cool, digging it bit gloomy/sad, in an alt rock sort of way dig the strings on man who told everything might actually come back to this one
1st listen did not catch my attentions but the second and third definitely did. I've enjoyed the vibe but can hardly put words on it. There's some quiet and chill songs while other are a bit more punchy. Will revisit it in the future
Awesome! Sounds like everything I love about the 90s. 4 stars
Mellow, ambient-ish album. Really enjoyed it, 4* Highlights: sea song, the man who told everything
Really great moody indie!
it’s good! pretty vibey and easy to have on in the background
The music is strong. Epic sweeps. No really memorable songs either. All their albums are similar but they’re a good band.
I liked this one more than the first Doves album. Most of these were genuinely enjoyable to listen to which is all you can really ask for from this project
It's good!
A new artist and album to me, what an incredible opening 4 songs. Sea Song is awesome. I consider it a disservice that nobody has ever played this for me.
Impressive and ambitious debut which sometimes reaches great heights. Bought it on release and good to listen again. Catch the Sun is probably my favourite track but the whole album is good.
Free, clean, uplifting.
7/10
first listen i like it
Manchester representation, this sound is as if Oasis was able to survive the new millennium, great band I plan on continuing with through their discography
I really dig this. Low key, vibey, but not boring.
Never heard of them but I actually really enjoyed this album. Right up my alley
Better than I expected
I wasn't at all aware of this one before now. It's an intriguing album that, under the right circumstances, could be outstanding. Further listening is warranted here.
Πάντως δυσκολεύτικα να επιλέξω κομμάτι Here it Comes
Great album cover, I know a lot of these albums were ahead of their time but this feels really ahead of its time. Can be a tad samey. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song - sea song Least fav - catch the sun
Really good, went in completely blind and enjoyed it
Chill album for a chill day
Very chill vibey album. Caught me off guard but I enjoyed it a lot more than expected.
You know, I really loved this one. The low tempo vibes really matched my style, and it sounded like a better Oasis. The album felt stylistically coherent, yet every song brought something new to the table. This is a hidden gem with some great tracks
Melodic and atmospheric tracks give this a great progressive sound, and each track provides enough variety to keep the album sounding dynamic and keep the listener engaged. I'd never heard of this band nor this album, but it's one to which I will return.
Love the vibes. Really cool sound overall but starts to get a bit same-y as it goes on. Only gripe, really. Great instrumentation with vocals that compliment it well. Favourite tracks: Sea Song, Rise, The Man Who Told Everything, The Cedar Room 4/5
Pretty good
Overall enjoyed it, The Sea Song and Catch the Sun stand out to me. Has a bit of The National or Foo Fighters at times.
Here’s another band that I definitely should have known about when they were active, but they never really made it across the pond like Radiohead, Coldplay and Oasis. Compared to other bands from that scene they have a pronounced psychedelic sound. Kind of a bridge between Britpop and later stuff like Tame Impala. Seriously, why did the algorithm never recommend this to me?
First half was ok, second half was fantastic
Pretty cool album, really good second half
This is the album that it took me the longest to review. I have now heard it 20 or so times and feel no closer to a resolution on it, but the website will not recommend me any more albums until I review this one. SO... I loved it. For sure. The question is how much. I think that the run of songs from Rise to Catch the Sun is kind of generational, and I like all of the other songs a lot too. I found the ending kind of a let down given how much else the album had going for it, and I don't feel like the album really reached the heights that I had hoped it would. That said, when it leans psychedelic, I leans forward, for sure. Current rating? 3.9, but that is very unsure
Quite a surprise. Expected derivative turn-of-the-millennium rock, but this has surprising depth and some great songs. One I'll be coming back to.

surprisingly enjoyed this more than i expected. Would I listen again: perhaps Deserves to be on this list: didn't feel groundbreaking, not the first shoe gaze album or the most popular either? 3.5
This one surprised me. This list has a whole lot of 2000s British alternative bands on here that aren't impressive, but this is a very full record with a lot of emotion to it.
I was pretty close to giving this a 3, because the front half didn’t totally grab me. It’s good, it just took a minute to click, and I kept waiting for that “okay, there it is” moment. Then the back half shows up and basically saves the score. “Catch the Sun,” “The Man Who Told Everything,” and “A House” were all really good, and that stretch feels way more locked in and memorable. It ended strong enough that I’m bumping it up to a 4. Favorite song: The Man Who Told Everything
Heard this and loved this back in the day, when I was learning what I liked and liking what I learned.
Very good, very therapeutic.
Haunting and somber. I really enjoyed the album. Something I would put on during a rainy, dreary day after a night of drinking. Very much a mood. Fun times!
Am I cool and indie now? Yes. Four!
It surprised me that I let this band go unnoticed in it's prime. I loved that sound. And the sound of this record is more complex and rich in layers than the first known singles that put them in the radar
Initially I was underwhelmed - songs didn't seem particularly good or bad. Middle of the album, I got to Catch the Sun, which sounds ridiculously like the Foo Fighters. I liked it. That was followed by The Man Who Told Everything, which I liked even better. I wondered if I hadn't given the first half of the album a fair chance, so I listened to it again. Didn't change my opinion much, but overall it was good.
I enjoyed it. Was great to listen to while crocheting my top:)
Depressivo mas bom depressivo
Não conhecia, Mas gostei, pribicoalm
I came into this thinking I knew EXACTLY how it would sound... some Arcade Fire bullshit... but I was proven wrong! I really dig this. It's moody and atmospheric.
The beauty of this platform is that once in a while you land on an absolute gem that would otherwise have eluded you. Exhibit A: Lost Souls. A beautiful combination of sentimental instrumentals and captivating vocal performances. These may not be strictly timeless...there are telltale signs we're in the 90s/00s. Nonetheless, they all hold up a quarter century later. Favorites are Catch the Sun, The Man Who Told Everything, Firesuite, and Break Me Gently. Sea Song feels like a lost Jeff Buckley track. Note: The chorus of Catch the Sun evokes QOTSA's "Little Sister." I wracked my brain for several minutes trying to put a finger on it, and when I had the eureka moment, I understood why I loved it. The Man Who Told Everything has a distinct QOTSA vibe, too...toned down, of course. Or maybe QOTSA is just a toned up Doves.
Nice atmospheric music.
Doves are a more palatable version of Coldplay and Radiohead. First time listen and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Really solid album start to finish.
Favourite Songs: Here It Comes Sea Song The Cedar Room
Would totally have listened to this multiple times in college. Nice mix of acoustic and electric, kinda emo but it works for me.
7/10 there’s some really beautiful songs on this album that will constantly play in my head
This was a great listen! I had slept on The Doves before. Time to do a deeper dive on this band.
7/10
First time I've heard this album, first time I've heard this band. I'm digging it. It's got a moody, smoldering kind of vibe. Reminds me of early Radiohead.
Really, really liked this. It's like a lot of adult alternative I love—tasteful, deliberate, but it feels like it can go anywhere. Smart choices and cool production. Its enduring popularity has to be a marketing problem—where do you put this? It's not Britpop, but it's not Radiohead. They could tour with U2 or Spiritualized and both would make sense.
Really found myself getting lost in these instrumentals. Reminded me of Porcupine Tree at times. Quite enjoyed it.
Strong album! Could give it a 5 with a couple more listens
Great Songs: Here It Comes, Break Me Gently, Sea Song, Rise, Lost Souls, Melody Calls Good Songs: Firesuite, The Man Who Told Everything, The Cedar Room, Reprise Mid Songs: Catch the Sun, A House Bad Songs:
+ fet vibe, mye å høre etter, spennende, stort lydbilde - klarer ikke helt å sette fingen på det, men den mangler ett eller annet, noen store crescendoer elns.
I've read some of the most liked reviews on here, and it seems that people are blaming them for the summary saying that it's the best album to come from Manchester since Definitely Maybe. First, that's a pretty finite compliment. How many albums really came from bands from Manchester in that time? Second, it's not the band's fault that someone else feels this way. Listening with an open mind, I thought this was quite good. And this is coming from someone who has truly hated a lot of the Britpop albums which should not have been included on here. It's not blow you away amazing, mind you. The lyrics are sparce, which leaves some of the songs lacking. The band, however, has some very good musicality to them. There is definitely something here that was worth exploring. I particularly would point people towards Rise and The Man Who Told Everything, both of which I thought were great. The former almost has an ethereal feel to it that made it excellent. A lot of the English albums the Brits have included on this countdown have been massive letdowns. This one certainly was not. An excellent inclusion.
Mixture of Coldplay and Radiohead sounds.
This was a lovely, mellow album with clean instrumentals and vocals - I enjoyed it
3.75
Loved this - it you threw Coldplay and Radiohead together via the Large Hadron Collider this would be the result!
7.0/10 Liked most of this.. will be checking out their other stuff
I dug the sound, the instrumentality mainly.
I like the doves a lot. some nice sounds here
Listening to this back-to-back to Cornershop's 'When I was Born For The 7th Time' made it drown a bit in 90s sounding music. Especially for an album which is not very in-your face, but a bit more relaxed. I stopped listening and then put it on later again, which made me appreciate it more. The tone of this album is very much to my taste, and reminds me a bit of other moody bands like Warpaint, Zero 7, Moby, or something along those lines. It being mostly instrumental was also nice. As it went on I found some songs I enjoyed, like 'Break Me Gently', 'Rise', or 'A House'. Overall I enjoyed the first part more, and the ambient songs without lyrics the most. The more poppy songs like 'Catch The Sun' wasn't to my liking really. Hard to put a score on this, definitely somewhere between a 3 and 4. There definitely was something here though that I don't appreciate in 3 star albums, so weak 4 it is.
Even a cold 90s ambient rock hater like me could enjoy this album (I know it was release 2000 but it’s close enough). I found my self actually enjoying this while working, forgetting that this was the album of the day and just enjoying the groove. The first tracks got me hooked. Many songs remind me a bit of Radiohead, “Sea Songs” in particular sound like it could be on “In Rainbows”. Mostly enjoyed the instrumental songs the first time round but listening to it again “Catch The Sun”, “The cedar Room” and “A House” all were good. I was going to give this a strong 3 but more I listen to it the more I feel like it deserves a 4 star.
I enjoyed this.
It somehow manages to sound like a bunch of different artists (Coldplay, Steven Wilson, Radiohead...) while also sounding utterly unique at the same time. Not your typical blend of poorly-dated early 2000s rock. I dig it.
4.4
Wasn't a huge fan to start off, but I really enjoyed the middle and end of it. Not a 100% hit rate for me, but some really nice songs nestled in there
I actually really liked this album! Varied instrumentals and vocals, some completely instrumental songs too.
This is right up my alley. I really enjoy all types of the psychedelic rock and apparently there are all kinds of new terms for this style of music like "Shoegaze". Anyway, the style of music that just feels like it drones on and you can be lost in thought as the music flows through you. I've never done shrooms or LSD or anything like that, but psychedelic rock or EDM is what I would want to listen to when I do it. I am less of a fan of the lyrical tracks like A House, Catch the Sun. I think Doves excels with the psychedelic vibe and Sea Song and Firesuite, Rise, Lost Souls are sweet spot. Here It Comes pushes the line a bit for me. This album came at a point in time when the music was dominated by Mickey Mouse Club pop, the classic 2000's hip hop, Destiny's Child, and this album is in a completely different direction; almost a revival of the psychedelic rock from the late 60's and 70's. This sound I think kind of evolved into things like lo-fi and the psychedelic rap of Travis Scott. I'm not saying Doves inspired this, just saying that the 2000's was a revival that then took popular music and blended it into the subcultures that we see today....and Doves was part of that early 2000's movement. I may be completely stretching here. Overall it's a great album and I really enjoy this vibe...........minus the lyrical tracks. When they try to do your classic pop/rock type songs, it just doesn't work for me.
141/1089 really enjoyed that it started off with a mostly instrumental song. Just a solid guitar-led indie album, very vibes-based and reminiscent of other peers but good faves: Firesuite, Break Me Gently, Sea Song, Melody Calls, Catch The Sun, The Cedar Room, A House 72/100
This kind of reminds me of a less proggy version or Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson. Never heard of these guys before but they'll definitely be in my rotation now.
INCREUBLE lo ame
Good. Saw influence of rhcp and Radiohead. Or vice verca rather.
Pretty solid stuff here.
I was really impressed by this album. Like I honestly had no idea what to think but I was very pleasantly surprised. The first 4 tracks were untouchable, if it had continued that perfectly it easily would’ve been 5, but it did start to fall off after the first 4 tracks, I also liked cedar room, and catch the sun. Honestly I didn’t dislike the other tracks they were just silly too slow and sad for me to get into, but I could definitely appreciate how musically gifted this band is cause every track was relaxing and soothing in a way. Definitely worth your time, but it is a lot slower that what I normally like.
Really enjoyed this album, has hints of Radiohead which was nice. Basically Oasis if they weren't both massive cunts. I wanted to give it a 5 but I don't think it quite cuts through enough
Will have to listen again but haunting and interesting.
Sea song ^^ In general, some songs are like a bridge in the Deftones direction
Pretty nice!
Definitely the stepping stone for modern indie pop/synth. I need to relisten at some point not at work.
This is a good album, undeniably so. I remember when it was released. I worked part-time at Woolies whilst studying at college. The guy that ran the "entertainment" department was a big fan and had it in the shop a lot. I remember thinking that the first half of the album just isn't as good as the second. I stand by this statement after listening today. "Catch The Sun" is remarkable and while "Firesuit" is decent, it doesn't have the same clout.
pretty good
Quite nice
I definitely like Britpop-directional. This album grew on me as I was listening. I don't know why I had a time aligning with this album, but at some point I started to "get it." Yes, some might say it's derivative but I'd counter "what music isn't?" (to some degree). And personally, I'd not point fingers at these guys particularly. Is it a masterpiece? Of course not. At this point, I prefer other (britpop) groups. But to me it's worthy of inclusion here. 4 stars.
This was really good. Not my usual style — vocals over ambient, multilayered soundscapes — but the musicality and creativity are winning. I’ll listen to it again and have a feeling it will get better with more familiarity. A 4.
actually loved this album, moody english vibes and a chill note instrumental sibling to some of Oasis and Blur’s best work. a sort of angsty easy listening, 8.5/10
sounds exactly like that era of music
4.1
Excellent space-indie rock
i liked this album a lot!!! going to dig more into their discography
might be a bit boring and lacking diversity but it creates a moody and melancholic atmosphere i needed tonight and becomes better with a second listen. firesuite is a beautiful instrumental composition. I liked the burning fire sample and lofi damaged tape vibe (some changing pitch effects) in A House, without it the song would be mediocre. and i think i will play The Man Who Told Everything on repeat.
Kunnon Radiohead / Silent Hill vibat osassa kappaleita. Täysin tuntematon bändi, mut on kyllä hyvää melankolista settiä.
Paikkapaikoin tunnelmaltaan samoja kaikuja kun muutamassa Dandy Warholsin biisissä, varsinkin 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia -levyltä. Itseasiassa jollain tavalla tuli myös Don't Believe the Truth -aikojen Oasis mieleen.
Never heard of Doves, and saw the label of "rock" and "indie" - the same labels given to some of the other 2000s albums on this list which were hot garbage. So I didn't have high expectations. Nonetheless, I was surprised at this album. It simply was very good. Not an all-timer 5/5, but it was closer to it than you think. For a debut album, the production, songwriting, instrumentation, structure, etc. was all superbly done. It's an impressive album. It runs a bit lengthy, approaching an hour, but when the songs are good, the album can be as long as it wants. Some tracks did sometimes feel a bit unnecessarily long, but those moments were few. I thought it was a strong album, and the production/atmosphere throughout was cool and interesting. None of it was painful to listen to - which some of the 2000s albums picks on this list can be.
Gorgeous sounds, definitely seeking more Doves.
Very atmospheric, evoking late summer nights and hazy afternoons. Reminds me a bit of a darker, more atmospheric and moodier Oasis. Lots of phasers, tremolo, delay, and other effects on guitars and vocals especially. The title track, Lost Souls, was giving me a "rock show at the haunted carnival" kind of vibe. Definitely getting some Foo Fighters influence in the sound of Catch The Sun too. As an enjoyer of instrumental music, I appreciated the tracks that were fully or mostly instrumental. A lot of the sounds I hear on this album really sound like they are either from 90s grunge or the more psychedelic indie rock of the 2010s. The producer, Steve Osborne, also worked with groups like New Order and U2, which makes the post production effects and layering make a lot of sense to me as well. Overall really enjoyed this album! Fave tracks for me are probably Catch The Sun, A House, and The Man Who Told Everything.
Never heard of this one. This album leans a bit on the ethereal side imo. Pairs well with our rest day/lazy day in France with not much going on. Feeling like you’re in limbo for the next day to arrive fresh and ready to explore again.
I've never listened to this before but if feels so familiar, and nostalgic its fantastic.
Hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What can I say, I'm a sucker for 2000s rock, and the Doves hit the sweet spot, with a bit of their own unique twists here n there. I really enjoyed this one, and enjoyed it even more late at night when its supposedly meant to be played? Some favorites were Catch the Sun, The Man who Told Everything, and Reprise. Kind of gave the same vibes & essence as Coldplay, The Verve, and Soundgarden, although definitely still different. Will definitely re-visit this one.
Really, really, incredibly solid dream pop/neo-psych stuff from the early oughts. The piano, the vocals, the spacey guitar, and the overall songwriting - everything works!
Quite somber and melancholic. A+ for looking out the bus window pretending you're in the music video. Good listen overall.
I would probably listen to this again... In fact, I will probably have to, because while the music on this album is very good, it's not very memorable. Indeed, if the music wasn't so good, I would only give three stars, but I enjoyed it enough to stretch to four.
Cosmic, man.
In a similar vein to Coldplay and Travis and those other British "more influenced by Radiohead than by the Kinks" post-Britpop bands. I really love this kind of stuff so I enjoyed it. Might not be your bag if it isn't.
Best enjoyed at night accompanied by a joint.
An album with some depth that grew on me with repeated listenings. I saved Catch the Sun
heck yeah!! At times subtle, but in a good way. Moody, but in a good way. Certain tracks reminded me a lot of Elbow. FIRESUITE into HERE IT COMES kicked off the album quite beautifully.
This was solid. Earmarking for further review
Enjoyed this. Not what I was expecting. Ambient and immersive.
Solid album. The only thing I didn't like was some of the weirdly processed vocals. I'm glad this project introduced me to this band!
Really liked this. Very atmospheric with strong build ups. The songs do blur into each other but it's great music for a rainy day like today. Would like to revisit it as a full listen. 4/4.5
originally wrote Doves off, I think I assumed they were a bit wet. However, this record was great! Reminded me of The Bends a bit, enjoyed this.
Great listen. Still fresh 👌🏻
Me parece precioso. Gracias por este descubrimiento.
An awesome album with a super cool sound, just can’t see myself listening to it all the time, definitely quite moody and hits at a specific time
Great album!
Quite good
Excellent. Moody and catchy at the same time
First half was great musically, but the vocals were a special kind of ass. But the second half of the album the vocals improved a lot.
sound and textures are pretty good, like a more accessible and mellow radiohead; The man who told everything a good one. from their bio: Lost Souls was considered by many to be the best debut album by a British act since Oasis' Definitely Maybe ..... was roundly praised on its release for its blending of claustrophobic intensity and euphoria, the sonic influences from electronic music present in its textures and for being "the perfect after-hours soundtrack."
If you want to make being a lost soul as comfortable as possible, put on this album. Not as pretentious or commercial as Coldplay, they evoke a sort of sophisticated nuanced gloominess that puts you at ease rather than depress. As I listened, I wanted to find a typewriter, open a pack of cigarettes and smoke my way through a darkly ironic short story. I wanted to but didn't, and I was ok with it. And THAT sums up this album for me.
I had already heard music by the Doves and had fond memories of it. This album didn't immediately sweep me off my feet, but it did pique my interest. I'll give it more attention and listen to it again. 4/5
I liked this album, and it was something different to listen to.
This was nice to zone out to and do some busywork tasks to
I'd forgotten how bloody good this. The playing style is almost presented as a catch up. Everything is slowed down, behind the beat. The band wants the energy, but can't quite reach it. This leads to a lovely chilled, yet slightly exhausting sound.
I'm just happy this is not an album of electronica or dance music. I probably shouldn't read the brief description of the album because when I hear "best debut since Definitely Maybe" then definitely definitely have some high hopes. And this album was pretty good. I wouldn't say as good as Definitely Maybe. It's like a more emo-sounding Coldplay but also a more interesting (musically) Coldplay. I enjoyed pretty much every song on this album and the fact it was a low-key affair. There is a variety of different sounds within the actual sound of the band and I would recommend this, as repeated listens would reward the listener. My favorite tracks are: Here it Comes Break Me Gently Rise Melody Calls Catch the Sun The Man Who Told Everything The Cedar Room A House
4,5
I did not think I would like this at all but I really kinda do.
Surprised me. Felt like the main character.
Lost Souls isn’t my favourite Doves album, but I’m looking forward to revisiting it—it’s been a long time. I was surprised to realize it only came out in 2000; for some reason, I always thought it was from the early '90s. Doves have a timeless quality that makes their music feel like it’s been around forever. There’s a lot to like on this album. Standout tracks for me include “Here It Comes,” “Sea Song,” “The Cedar Room,” and “Catch the Sun.” The instrumentation is atmospheric and rich, while the lyrics lean into a darker, more introspective mood. It’s a solid, immersive listen from start to finish. Favourite tracks: “The Cedar Room,” “Catch the Sun” Least favourite track: Honestly, every song earns its place. Album artwork: Very cool cover—moody and fitting for the music.
Late night/morning after comedown feel for this pretty good indie rock record. Standout is the more radio-friendly "Catch The Sun" which has a little bit of Foo Fighters sound to it (when they're more pop-rock).
Yeah works for me, mellow cinematic, like a blend of "war on drugs" and ambient. Great to play in the background, to chill, but also wafting and growing and at times warm. very listenable, but I cant quite goush for the full 5 stars, as it doesnt evoke a super strong response, but thats maybe the charm here.
Really like this! Atmospheric.
I listened to this a couple of times in quick succession, it's very catchy, dark and brooding. I like
Nice to see these dudes repped on here. I was kinda into a couple of their later albums, but really enjoyed this one
Nice surprise. Quite enjoyed this album and plan to dig into their catalogue. I prefer to be broken slowly vs. broken gently, but that's just the Foreign Oren fan in me... ;) 3.75/5
A nice surprise for once.
Fantastic album I'm excited to listen to again!
Lost Souls provides a gentle electric massage to the ears and to the heart. It's a slightly acidic melon, to be appreciated with patience during a deliciously long train ride. You can definitely hug someone to this album, maybe brush their hair, and rub their back.
7/15/25. Enjoyed this new discovery, to me it sounded like a more alternative Coldplay. Great instrumentation.
I love a moody late-night album.
pretty good
This is actually a solid album. I really liked the atmosphere, melancholic and dreamy without feeling heavy. It starts off strong and maintains a consistent mood and style throughout. It’s well-crafted and immersive, but lacks a real standout moment. There’s no obvious wonder-hit, and overall it feels a bit standard at times. Still, it’s a solid record that works well within its own space. 4/5
Really enjoyed this! Had a nice ethereal feel to it. Simpsons: No
I did like this more than expected! But not a 5/5 enough.
I listened to this a few days ago and forgot what it sounded like. Fuck it, 4 Stars.
It’s dark, it’s moody, it’s innovative and varied, it’s a really nice and refreshing album in a sea of what can be pretty bland and generic indie music coming out around this time.
More a 3.5. Some songs are great, but you sort of forget the music is on at times. Sort of like that person at a party who is just nice and quiet
Smooth hypnotic, but better not listen to on suicidal days
This one was a nice surprise. I had not listened to or heard of Doves previously, but this reminded me of some of my favorite indie rock records. I only gave it one listen for timing reasons, but it was four stars to my ears.
Very interesting release. First real discovery from the list.
Makes an Okay backing track
Pretty good!
it's a 4.5/4.75
I haven't listened to Doves much, and not at all in years. This is a really great album though.
A great listen. It was a little hazy, I think the description from Wikipedia as "after-hours" is a great descriptor, but there were many moments that grabbed my attention in a way that I knew I wanted to revisit. The music is layered and feels lived in, with great dynamics.
was prob inevitable w/ this project that i would eventually hit something that i clearly like but am kinda not in the mood for? definitely very cozy music and the sound has lots of big ideas and little touches i like, but i was not super receptive to the songs themselves...tho in a way where i can tell its more of a problem w/ my spd and scatterbrained morning dragging me away from the music. honestly even under better circumstances this seems like something of a grower anyway, so a revisit would prob help regardless. not a band that i expected to pop up Twice on this list, but the strengths across both records ive heard seem v similar...comfy, emotive, maudlin, melty...and potentially slightly better production than the sophomore, tho id have to recheck both!
4/5
Really enjoyed this one right from the start. That first song almost feels a bit like a modern day "Doors" track; it's so moody, vibey, cool, and contemplative. The whole time I was listening I was thinking "I'd love to be in a band like this.". "Here It Comes" feels like a throwback even to a pretty niche album that I absolutely love- Chris Cornell's solo record Euphoria Morning. The whole album is both eclectic and cohesive. I'm really impressed by how these songs sound different and fresh compared to eachother, but they still exist really well together in this whole singular listening experience. It's funny that while I was listening I was really enjoying the record but I do question it's place on this list- unless I'm missing some element like they are historically influential or something. Still, to me this was something I was really into.
Super pleasant
top songs: the cedar room, catch the sun, melody calls, the man who told everything, firesuite, lost souls, the kind of music you want to drown in
If you like anthems, this baby is for you. I happen to really like anthems, so I was all about Lost Souls. A little bit Oasis, a little bit early Arcade Fire, a little bit ready to listen to this one again in the future.
Very proggy/
New band I like!
A pretty good album, I liked Fire suit, Sea Song and Lost Souls the most.
I was quite taken by this band. It is an odd thing to "know" music and be a fan for a long time and not know about a band that suits your style but this is not the first time this has happened. It could be to do with the (really surprising and eye opening) fact that American radio is super limited in scope of who they actually give air time to and a lot of Euro bands just are not on that list. While that sucks, at least now I have access and the album generator came through quite nicely here! I love this album actually and will listen to a lot more of their stuff moving forward. (New wave, progressive rock, sort of poppy feel stuff in case one wonders.)
4.3 That's a cracking debut album. How are these guys are not thought as highly as other 2000s British rock acts (Coldplay etc.) is beyond me. Well, one slight reason is that future albums didn't hit as good as this, but this album is phenomenal for sure. Definitely will have this on rotation.
Some bands hit you between the eyes, some bands steal up to you and whisper in your ear. Doves are the latter, and though it's only four stars that's to reflect that even greater glories were to come. Cedar Room is six stars on its own.
Something special about this one.
This is a good album, but it would perhaps punch harder if it was trimmed down a fair bit. Favorite track: "The Cedar Room"
A great selection of dark, luscious tracks that are so densely packed with layers. Just really good indie music throughout - nothing too much to it in the most simplified terms. Could have done with cutting some of the fat from the run time. Best Tracks: - Firesuite - Sea Song - The Cedar Room Worst Tracks: - Melody Calls Rating: 8/10
Nice
I really like one of the guys’ tone (from the second half). The repeated melody of catch the sun is exactly the same as one line of an old (released in 1994 but still quite popular now) Chinese/cantonese song, which put me off a bit. But I still liked the song and I also liked the man who told everything. In general this album matched our mood very well as our bus drove through the mountains under the rain!
First album for these guys as Doves although they’d released some earlier stuff under a different name. Soaring arrangements and soulful vocals. Excellent as is the second album.
This was right up my alley!
It's a bold move to open with an instrumental (Firesuite), but it sets the scene perfectly for these happy-go-lucky knockabout japesters to give us this sumptuous slice of indie rock as their debut effort. There's much to like here: Here it Comes, Sea Song, Catch the Sun (not the darts tune, that's Chase the Sun) in particular, but there is very little in the way of filler, it all adds to the story. Well worth a listen, maybe several.
An album with some genuinely incredible production that's occasionally bogged down by a fusion of two vocal styles that I really don't care for. Not every song falls under these (The songs 'The Man Who Told Everything', 'A House', and 'The Cedar Room' had genuinely solid lead vocal melodies and were maybe the best songs here). But many other songs have these very flat, reverb-drenched wailing vocals that make them a slog to get through when they go on for too long. Mainly the songs in the middle, like 'Rise', 'Lost Souls', and 'Melody Calls' I had issues with. Let's talk more about what I liked here, though. I mean, in essence, I'm getting a well-executed fusion of trip-hop, dream-pop, and shoegaze. And it works marvelously when these strings swoop in like on the opener 'Firesuite', an instrumental cut, or the climax of the aforementioned 'The Man Who Told Everything'. I loved that subtly twangy guitar tone on the 'The Cedar Room', peak distorted, fuzzy dream-pop shit. And despite this song's very forward Britpop identity, a genre and sound I don't really care for, it was maybe my favorite song here. And despite its 7-minute run time, I think the track manages to make most, if not all, of those minutes interesting, enjoyable, and vital to the song's structure. The arpeggiated groove with those piano embellishments on 'Sea Song' was another one of those utterly gorgeous moments. I also really liked the baroque-fused instrumental interlude 'Reprise', a song that brings back those pianos and strings that I loved so much on some of the other songs. I'm leaning towards loving this album - the entire thing just sounds so cozy and exquisite. The vocal moments that I didn't like as much don't outweigh all the other larger-than-life-sounding moments on this album. This was life-affirming shit at its best, but sleep-inducing at its worst.
This album feels like sitting around outside at night while your conversations get sleepier and quieter as the night goes on. The opening duo of Firesuite and Here It Comes are awesome, and there are some other cool songs like Sea Song. The end of the album from The Cedar Room on were pretty boring to me, this album could have been 15 mins shorter. Overall, good album.
First listen to a nice album.
I've never consciously heard this band before. Completely against my expectations I found myself enjoying this. 4/5.
Back in early 2002 I participated in a "CD exchange" with R where he gave me 10 albums I didn't know and I reciprocated. (digression: funny that here in 2025 CDs actually seem (are) far more antiquated than vinyl) This album was one of the 10 - which i loved - I hadn't listened to it in at least a decade which now immediately sends me back in time and suddenly here I am with a whole heap of nostalgia. Great stuff - overall it gives the feel of the aftermath of a long, exhausting, and fun night and now you're just sitting amongst the detritus that you'll have to clean up but it can wait 'til morning... I put "Catch The Sun" on countless mix-CDs (there they are again) in the years following this - an obviously-catchy song that is also so weirdly out of place here - the outlier for the near-tranquility of the rest of the album. If there's any criticism it's that it can all feel a little singular by the end; meaning that for the most part I tend to link these songs together - i.e. they become a bit indistinguishable from each other. Which might actually be a feature. This is a good example of the album-as-a-whole (despite "Catch The Sun") working as a mood piece. 8/10 4 stars.
I’m not sure if it’s that there is something very fundamental in the songwriting, or that these tracks have pervaded the collective unconscious for a quarter of a century, but some these songs feel like they must’ve always existed.
Lost Souls was such a great album because it was just so relaxing. This is genuinely the perfect album to listen to after you had a long day because it just has everything that makes an album relaxing. It has a slow pace with some beautiful melodies with just the right style of guitar playing to help give this album it's feel. I got this album during the specific scenario i mentioned that would be perfect to listen to it so it got to a point as to where i wasn't bothered by the repetition and length of the songs all that much. Some of the songs are a little weird due to a somewhat unorthodox vocal style but it was never enough to make me not enjoy this album. This album may hit hardest during a specific scenario but when it does hit, it hits hard. Best Song: The Man Who Told Everything Worst Song: Lost Souls
Excellent album, had my attention the entire time. Had never even heard of these guys but looking forward to exploring more
The day I bought this was a real Dry The Rain (High Fidelity) moment. Our Price, Brixton, April 2000. Four of us at the counter, all asking what was playing. Cash for Happiness.
I really enjoyed this album, thought it was so beautiful! Reminded me a bit of Red House Painters if that makes sense :)
4.3 - Would this be described as post brit pop? Anyway, really enjoyed the sound of this and my 18 year old sad self would have loved this
Another Doves album, how ridiculous. And yet, once again this album is really quite great. My opinion is similar to their other album - its not really necessary for this list, but its still a very solid album. Fave Tracks: Rise, Catch the Sun, The Cedar Room 4/5
This album is a really cool listen, though I also had trouble listening to it actively. Taking it in a bit more passively, though, I found it really cool. The music is great. It all fits together, but with plenty of variation so it never gets boring. Lots of big, sprawling instrumentation that the vocals sit on top of 4/5
Never heard of them before, but I liked it enough to play it back-to-back three or four times in a row. I’ll be happy to circle back and explore them more for sure.
Started off like a Radiohead album but kinda ended up like Coldplay. Rounding this up to a 4 as the other Doves album had me feeling this same kinda half an half enthusiasm/disinterest.
