Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Released on the day the computers were supposed to crash, or take over, or something. Firesuite: a slow burner with a touch of Portishead. Here it Comes: post-britpop bustle, chorus has a decent hook. Surprisingly bluesy with a pleasant piano coda. Break Me Gently: Tremolo lead vocal is underpinned by backing choral section. Pained, but restrained. Sea Song: Did someone say Radiohead?! Some nice chord changes but a little laboured. Rise: More tremolo, this time guitar. A little repetitive. More ambient bells and whistles. Lost Souls - Light and airy verses...moody cave chorus. Hearing a little bit of Pulp here (sorted for e's and whizz). Beginning to feel like the vocals are the main thing holding the album back from being truly great. Melody Calls - Speaking of changing up of vocals...earworm, bouncy Americana...slightly out step with the rest of the album. Catch the Sun - Clearly THE single. Memorable vocal, nice production. Strong track. Man Who Told Everything: Mournful...up-tempo drums in the chorus a little too prominent. Verse is much better. A decent single. Outro strings a little cheesy. Cedar Room: More more tremolo, moody strut, more than a little Charlatans coded. Reprise: straight into... A House: Acoustic intro, tasteful organ backing. Surprisingly short, fades into ambient mumbling. Half expected a big crescendo that never came. As debut albums go, it's a good one. There are moments of greatness, though overshadowed by some meandering. There's also one too many nods to the Ghost of Britpop present. That said, it's a confident first step. Strong 3.5.

actually prefer their follow-up The Last Broadcast quite a bit

Decent atmosphere but I wish I connected more with the songwriting which didn't really stand out to me but I also wonder if this is a grower. Either way it's solid but not my favorite at all.

Slightly Colder-play.

I just cannot believe we need two Doves albums – yea, Doves albums released within two years of one another. I think I liked this better than the first one but I know that doesn't mean a whole lot. [checks history] oh weird, both Doves albums for this group went up on Feb. 19 (2025, and now, 2026). Okay so there are definite Black Heart Procession production vibes here in the guitar and piano in the first two tracks. This is a much more enjoyable album. I wish I could go back and give that other one a 1.

Prägende Stücke sind „The Cedar Room“, „Catch the Sun“, „Here It Comes“ und „Sea Song“.

Sympatoche

Generic early 2000s rock

Atmospheric, moody, which was interesting at first, but less so as the album wore on. I don't take the right drugs.

For various reasons I didn’t really buy new music in the early 2000’s and as a result I missed out on a number of bands. Now I’m sure if I’d heard them at the time I’d have loved the Doves. Big anthemic slightly melancholic rock is my sweet point and they do that with aplomb. However I’m probably a bit too long in the tooth now and whilst this is pleasant it’s not world changing

Revisiting this record was a surprise as songs that I had previously thoroughly enjoyed came off this time as a little meh. This is not to say that this album is not a thoroughly realized pop album with magnificent vocals, and a gorgeous lush sound creating a vibe that mostly works. The Man Who told Everything still hits as does The Cedar Room. I think this is best described as an after the club driving home record with the electronic sounds giving the right vibrations to a smooth pop record. 3/5

I’m noticing that if a Mercury Prize even breathed on an album it’ll probably be included in this list. Fair enough given the curators, I guess. I have a feeling I didn’t give this a close enough listen - it went right through me. There were moments and textures I enjoyed, but it felt like one long musical experience instead of a collection of songs. I feel like I owe this another listen but I don’t really want to. It’s dynamic and often pretty, but it didn’t move or grip me. A pretty middle-of-the-road experience.

This was alright. The dream / space rock and pop were the highlights. Definitely better than the straight up indie songs. Not bad lads

I enjoyed the mellowed-out, dream-like instrumentals and vocals. Favourite Track(s): The Man Who Told Everything Least Favourite Track(s): Melody Calls

Enjoyed it! Brings me back to the early 2000’s

Alternate Dimension Coldplay

I bought this album on release. I like Doves, but their second album is better. This has some crackers on it, such as The Cedar Room, but you do need to trawl through quite a bit of melancholic noise to get there.

Very atmospheric, adding to my rotation

Solid, similar music "feel" to The Suburbs, but I don't think this album has a vibe that quite matches what I tend to like out of indie rock.

Favorite Tracks: Firesuite / Sea Song / Catch The Sun Rating:2.8 I only discovered Doves within the last year, from their excellent 2025 album Constellations for the Lonely. I haven't dug much into their older work, though, so I was excited for this listen. Unfortunately I found this to be a bit of a letdown, and looking at other reviews now seems I'm not the only one. Didn't find much that stood out here, for me it was sort of pleasantly bland and generic. Catch The Sun was likely my favorite track here but for some reason sounds completely unlike the rest of the album. I'd put this on as some background music to work to.

3.5 (and rising) (59:09, 12 tracks, debut album, 1996-2000) Dream Pop (Indie Electronic “Post Rave”) Four years in the making this album spans a lot of different sounds. At one point it sounds a lot like the Foo Fighters (Catch the Sun), others Dream Pop. A lot of influences of house music. While I really like this album, I tend to agree with the majority of commentors that this album is here because of an overweighted bias to British recording artists. Apparently, Doves gets two albums in the 1001? Struggled with rating it. At times I felt a 4 (it grew on me a lot, I listened to this a dozen or more times, it’s generic office friendly music.) I settled on a 3 as I just don’t want to over reward an album that probably shouldn’t be on this list. However, honestly, in 1996 this was pretty cutting-edge music it’s just by 2025 it sounds like ‘everything else from 2000’ and they released it in 2000 so it’s hard to give them credit for being ahead of their time. Factoids This album is best listened too at night when you really don’t want to listen to anything complex – it’s dark but yet poppy. Sort of dance, sort of moody. It’s an hour long but it plays over quickly. Nothing annoying. I could definitely see this being many people’s ‘favorite’ album. I could go anywhere from 2 – 4.5 on it. Album cover – not terrible, appealing, generic like their sound Band name – rename after Sub Sub Apparently, the band lost all of their equipment and recordings in a studio fire and had to redo everything? Favorite songs – Catch the Sun, The Cedar Room 1. "Firesuite" (instrumental) 4:36 2. "Here It Comes" 4:50 3. "Break Me Gently" 4:38 4. "Sea Song" 6:12 5. "Rise" 5:38 6. "Lost Souls" 6:09 7. "Melody Calls" 3:27 8. "Catch the Sun" 4:49 9. "The Man Who Told Everything" 5:47 10. "The Cedar Room" 7:38 11. "Reprise" (instrumental) 1:45 12. "A House" 3:40

Nothing too bad but a bit slow ig

This was a vibe. I liked how relaxing and enjoyable it was. It was easy to vibe around the house and work to. This grew on me as I got through it! Liked Songs: "Here It Comes" , "Sea Song" , "Rise" , "Lost Souls" , "Catch The Sun" , "The Man Who Told Everything" , "Reprise"

Also really ethereal

Nice album. No standouts for me. Just good listening.

Pretty good. I really enjoyed some of the songs. Would listen to this again. Not crazy about the instrumental, synthesizer stuff.

This album was great for me while wired on coffee and locked into work, getting things done. That's gotta count for something. I think if I was listening to it while driving, it'd be boring. So it definitely has its place, an enjoyable listen for my setting.

The Good: We get doves! The Bad: They are not part of a magic act… The Ugly: They aren’t crying either… I am playing catch up on rating albums. This one was presented to me during a very busy weekend of drinking, so technically speaking I should have enjoyed it—this per the overall comments I read left and right. Today, about a month later, on a dreary Monday morning, a couple of hours before I need to start a 2 week business trip, I am listening to this thinking “I HATE Lo-Fi!!!!!!!!” Is the album bad? No. Is it something that should be listened to before one dies? Not really… Am I getting to the point of despair regarding this 1001 journey? Inching closer to insanity on an almost daily basis! Anyway, today’s album in the future is Al Green, and I am actually looking forward to listening to that one, so I will give this album a mercy kill with a 3* rating

I liked it alright, high 3 something stars, but its probably not something i'd go out and listen to again.

depressing, but i liked listening to it in the cab

I enjoyed myself!

like an early 2000s brit-pop cover band doing original material.

Apparently this proves that Doves sound better while crying.

6 - AVERAGE

Epische Klangteppiche, teils etwas langweilig.

It's fine. Sometimes generic early 2000s rock works. I'd rather hear this than some late period U2 or Bruce Springsteen. That being said, I'll never listen to this again and can't remember any stand out moments

Solidan post britpopo

Odd. Nice to just have in the background when I can’t concentrate with my own music being on.

Hella frontloaded album - first few songs blew my mind but then afterwards it kinda turned into more average stuff - but still very cool nevertheless.

This album is quite interesting, as most of the songs by themselves highlight why the album is significant enough to be on this list. Listen to Firesuite, Here It Comes, Sea Song, Catch The Sun and The Cedar Room as singles, and it sounds quite fascinating. However, putting them into an album together is where this album loses its charm. The resulting sound is a mixture of his vocals and instrumentation that are not varied enough for the generally moody-sounding album. In consequence, it results in an album that, when finished, feels like a blur, making you forget what you were doing over the last hour.

3 Stars (8/15)

After listening to this list for 60 days, a more apt name for this book would've been: 501 Forgettable British Albums You Must Hear Before Completing a PhD in Obscure Music History. Had never heard of the Doves before, and giving 3-stars because it's just 'ok.' Would I listen to again? If my Spotify AI DJ cues it up, I probably won't hit skip.

From this cover the music could be literally anything from pop to metal. But of course it’s British indie rock. And based on that and the year this came out I am lowering my expectations as far as I can. Hope to be proven wrong. There's a lot to like, a lot to dislike. Britpop + psychedelic pop + whatever Radiohead and Coldplay were doing around this time. I think it's the atmospheric production, that shimmering endless reverb and vaguely symphonic guitar and keyboard treatment, the jazzy chord progressions, arpeggios. It's a cool sound, but again, it just REMINDS ME of something else. Then all of a sudden there's this garagey power pop heavy guitar thing "Catch the Sun." Just rock. Very nice. Out of place (finally something different!) but nice. Sounds like a Dave Grohl song, honestly. Everything on here sounds like something. Nothing bad per se. Just something that you've heard before. They do tend to take a riff and wear out its welcome, drone-like. Really excellent production and all of the musicians are precise, not overplaying. They bury the vocals a lot, for good reason, but who am I to criticize? Overall I really enjoyed this. Nothing hit me the wrong way, they have some power to them, some U2-esque ambition. The drum/bass/guitar section is exceptional, simple riffs well executed.

3.0 - Ok

Fine but not standing out.

Decent album but did not stick out to me.

Swans, Doves and lately Geese. Post-rock is flying. I heard some Radiohead influences and overall quite enjoyable. 3/5

I think I liked it but everytime I listened is soon move into the background of my mind while I worked and I just didnt notice it much. This is not a bad thing, actually. I suppose that it is not a great thing either.

Saw a review that mentioned the importance of listening to this album at the right time of day and I couldn’t agree more. Walking the streets at 3am on a Saturday, this album would be a potentially 5/5 just for the vibe and main character feel it would provide in that sort of moment. Now on a Tuesday while working, I can’t say it had the same impact. I did still truly enjoy it but it didn’t have the impact it would have in the correct circumstances. It did make me very relaxed and allow me to flow through work with ease. Some albums are torture to get through and this one wasn’t at all.

Not bad. At least one good track.

this is a driving while you pretend you're in a movie type of album. i dig it, it was good to do laundry to LMAO

Quiet Indie-Rock, bit boring at times. You need to be in the right mood for it. Fav: Catch the sun

Something between coldplay and radiohead, haunting instrumentals and remains engaging throughout

Fine. Decent vibes but kind of boring. I had their album after this one back in the day and I remember a couple decent tracks on that one. Although I haven’t listened to them in over a decade. Maybe they aged like a slowly deflating helium balloon?

Eh. Didn’t grab me really at all. Fine I guess but mostly boring.

Meh. It was fine. The vocals didn’t do anything for me.

Better than The Last Broadcast, actually has a few terrier bangers. But mostly I do still fine this band a lot of mid. 3.5/5

Pretty solid 90s alternative rock I suppose

I like the Doves. Not sure this is a particularly exciting entry for the list though. A real slow burner.

Decent psych-indie with great production - ideal music for a BBQ?

A dumb rock record. Nothing wrong with that.

I really liked these guys. Definitely a strong 3.

I'll be honest, I was expecting indie landfill here but to be fair, it's quite a bit better than that. Definitely some shades of **Elbow** here, perhaps coming from Manchester around a similar time, they were subjected to similar influences. As an Elbow fan though, that boded well. So I found quite a lot here to enjoy. The instrumental opener _Firesuite_ really attracted my attention and perhaps instanty changed my preconceptions with it's atmospheric sound, leaning into dub at times. And whilst that was perhaps an outlier in that sense, it does show a broad range of influence that gives the album a sonic texture above and beyond the indie landfill that was around at that time. It was a little on the long side, but I'll return at some point.

"The best debut album since Oasis' Definitely Maybe" Uhm well how about definitely maybe not

Need some more listens because it definitely feels like a grower. Well written, well produced, if subtle indie rock.

Doves are one of those quietly brilliant bands, who occupy the same kind of space as Elbow. Warm atmospheric and melancholic sounds. As a debut album its a great record, and the work that followed it kinda only got better

Doves walked so Elbow could run

First half of the album I quite liked but the second half didn't really appeal to me.

An attempt at Radiohead

First listen. 2.5 This was a pretty boring album with shoegaze influences. Most of the songs seemed to follow the pattern of a slow build, swirling guitar chords, then pretty bland lead guitar coming in over the top. Certainly not the worst thing and pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing really stood out.

7/10 Highlights: Rise The Cedar Room

Zie bijvoorbeeld Catch the Sun. Prima luistersessie. 7/10 Highlights Melody Calls Catch the Sun

It sounds like a relaxed listen for people waking up with a hangover finding out they survived Y2K.

This had some interesting riffs and arrangements!

They’re calling it “post-Britpop”. Well, I’m calling it “just ok”! Some of it def sounds like basic Radiohead wannabe stuff, one song sounds like Pearl Jam. I dunno!

less ass than i anticipated

Not sure how I never came across this generic "Manc" band at the time but I've heard some stuff by them recently. I quite like the slightly more cheery vibe - I can only assume they escaped from Manchester to somewhere nicer. Will continue to listen

I'll probably listen to this one again before I die.

Was nice I don't know why, but this review used to contain my elaborate suicide method until I realised it had no business being there

Middle of the road album. I think it could be better in the right mindset. I'm going to revisit this at some other point, but I really wish we could edit reviews and comments to update it. I've got some regretful reviews that I'd like to go back and add to.

Between 3 and four

Our group poo poo'ed this album as yet another obscure UK alt rock band. But for me it's not a bad album. It has an atmospheric/spacey vibe. It's kind of a high-3, borderline 4.

Reminds me of lots of other bans - Radiohead in parts, guitars that give Jeff Buckley vibes, maybe the National in places. It's ultimately never better than any of those things, tho, and is definitely too long.

7/10 - strong indie music

Aaaaand the UK bias strikes again! This is one of those inclusions that really puts a date and location on when this list was formed. Lost Souls is not a bad album. Dare I say, it's a good album. However, it's not a great one, and it has flaws. I will say that this album does sound good. As far as I can tell, the mixing is alright, and the instruments sound nice. They work well in the songs, which are just as decent. The vocals are okay. Not bad, but not special. The writing is pretty basic. There's a reason why people are comparing this to early Coldplay, except I do happen to like early Coldplay more. The album's a bit too long for my liking. I feel like this could've been better if it was cut down to 40 minutes or so instead of lasting nearly an hour, especially seeing as this album happens to be a bit repetitive for my taste. This is pretty much the definition of "average uk indie rock from the early 2000s." It's good, but not great. Solid 3/5.

Dammit, almost a perfect week of 5 stars then this. Good band, and all, but their debut is really not exceptional (admittedly, the second half is stronger than the first, and brings up the rating); we could have stuck with The Last Broadcast for this list.

A solid album that did not need to be on this list.

Honestly a great album to kiss my boyfriend to. Top notch. Great vibes.

Pretty..pretty…pretty good.

Not bad. Radioheadyish.

Olihan taas leppoisan mukavaa kuunneltavaa. Ei oo tullu Dovesiakaan aiemmin kuunneltua. Ei mitään maata mullistavaa, mutta tykkäsin. Ei ehkä neloseen kuitenkaan? vedetään tylsällä kolmosella. Voisin kuvitella kuuntelevani enempikin Dovesia ja tutustua yhtyeeseen paremmin

Tommosta perus pashyvää renkutusta, ei tarttee hermostua eikä juhlia.

Tämän albumin myötä tuli itselle tutuksi genrenimi "post-britpop" mitä ikinä se sitten tarkoittaakaan. Bändi on nimenä tuttu, muttei oo tullut kuunneltua aiemmin. No nyt lähti ainakin jutut sivuraiteelle. Ei siinä. Ihan kelpoo, mut ei nyt mitään superiikaan. Jee.

Not bad but there were no track that really caught my attention. really great sound, voice and overall music though. It really flew past me in the background while working

It’s as if the clangers dropped acid and recorded an LP. Worst album on here so far

A bit Jeff Buckley on the chords, a bit radiohead, a bit elbow.. but not as good as any of them..

Low key and chill indie album. Not a bad listen.

Never heard of this album or band before, but this album cover is pretty neat. I'm guessing I'm in for a rock affair. Something alternative if I'm to really go out on a limb. Guess I'll just have to see where this one takes me. Ah, indie rock. Not quite there, but I win some points. Anyways, this is pretty good - definitely within my sphere of interest. The album has a calming, relaxed sound, but with a surprising level of intricacy. The drums and guitars are pretty good across the board, though there's also some other good embellishments in here, too - particularly with the strings and sax. Truth be told, this thing goes on for way too long and could do with fifteen or twenty minutes being shaved off the finished product, though I ain't complaining - I enjoyed spacing out to this one. "Firesuite" is a cool opener. I like the somewhat lo-fi approach with the instrumental. Those muffled, reverberating guitars go a long way in creating an engrossing atmosphere. The piano bits which appear during the subdued parts of the song are pretty sweet, too. "Sea Song" is pretty cool. Big fan of the reflective atmosphere and the slurred, reverberating vocals. The repetitious guitar chords work surprisingly well, and I enjoy the distant vocal samples and the sweet sax bit near the end of the song. "Rise" is a solid follow-up. The punchy percussion is what really makes the song for me, though I'm also fond of those rippling, distant vocals. "The Cedar Room" has a pretty cool sound. I dig the delicate, sensitive guitars that guide the beginning and middle of the track. Book time. Lush and intimate. Takes a page from a lot of Manchester musical acts. Not convinced yet - over to Wikipedia I go. Moderately successful. "...considered by many to be the best debut album [...] since Oasis". Has a decent critical reception. I would consider snubbing this one under normal circumstances, but I'm feeling charitable today. There's something about this album which captures the turn of the millennium quite well. I cosign this inclusion.

Not sure what to make of this album. It's very ethereal and laid-back, and it's quite pleasant to listen to, but it doesn't rellay grab my attention and it's a bit boring. My favourite track was "The Cedar Room".

Reasonably enjoyable listen. I appreciated the ambient alt-pop sound. Nothing notably inventive and the Wikipedia entry should just be ignored (I read a great review here from someone who did the forensics and unearthed that the praise being referred to came from a sell piece on the album - so it’s just promotional fluff). 25 albums in I am moving away from the notion that these 1001 albums are in some way the greatest of all time, as the “listen to before you die” might suggest. Instead it’s more of a compilation of albums that one might select to give a comprehensive sampling of popular music over the last 70 or so years. Otherwise I can’t justify or understand the inclusion of an album like this (or a few others I’ve heard even this early on). Im glad I listened to it - it’s something I would have never otherwise tried and it did expose me to another corner of the music world.

Doves always seem like there is more potential, but it never quite lives up to it. 3/5

catch the sun is a great song - rest just average

Fairly MOR stuff, didn't hate it but not much to distinguish it from a lot of other late 90s/early naughties guitar bands

Pretty generic 2000s indie. Not bad at all, but not great either.

This one didn’t really move me in any direction. We had it on in the car as we were driving around yesterday and it was fine. Likely won’t listen again but not a bad listen.

I really enjoy the instrumental aspects of this album. There are some super cool sounds in the mix. Unfortunately the vocal quality of the singer isn't my favourite and reduced my overall impression of this album. I would probably give it 8 or 9/10 without the vocals, but with them it's a 7/10. A lot of the album reminded me of early Coldplay, which is a plus for me because I'm a big fan. The song I liked the most was probably Sea Song.

I didn't find anything crazy special about this album

The music is solid, very atmospheric feeling. If I'm looking to sit down and just get lost in my thoughts, I could find myself putting this album on.

College radio station fodder.

This was really solid. Weirdly very backloaded though. But I don’t think I’d listen to anything on it again, so a 3 it gets. Probably more like a 3.5 but this website doesn’t do half ratings.

They're really good at what they do, a sort of dark and moody flavour of Rock that's reminiscent of Radiohead. To me it all felt a bit one-note by final few tracks, though none of it's bad by any stretch. Maybe I'll try listening on a night walk and see if my opinion changes -- this does seem like a very good album for such a mood. Standouts: Sea Song • Catch The Sun

It's not bad but the Wikipedia blub makes it sound way better than it is. I'm sure in the right scenario this could be a 4 or maybe even a 5 but for now it's a 3.

Heard a little Coldplay. Heard a little Foo. Heard a little bit of a lot of things I like. Good stuff.

Not offensive or annoying enough to turn off. Not interesting enough to have any highlights.

Pretty good

Moody, gloomy, hazy, but musically okay and I like the lead singer's timber. Too much mediocre Brit rick/pop on this list.

A bit meh

Took me quite a few songs to get into this as the first tracks seem more like instrumentals with occasional vocals. When the songs kicked in it helped, but it didn't really grab me. Still a good listen.

Moody. Atmospheric. Perhaps too much so, but I quite liked it...

Didn't totally stand out for me, but enjoyable nonetheless.

As far as inexplicably self-indulgent (but actually incredibly miscellaneous) 00s indie background fuzz goes, this isn't the most egregious, but others have done it better.

I’ve been a Doves fan since the jump - OK, maybe not since Sub Sub, but definitely before Lost Souls came out - and did a close listen of Lost Souls several years ago. My takeaway then was that it’s a collection of attempts at different sounding bands and possibly just opening songs. Less a band confident in its aesthetic such that they could cover a variety of sounds or genres - which they don’t - more a band not yet sure of what it was. It wasn’t Sub Sub, it wasn’t Oasis, it wasn’t Radiohead. But it could be its own thing, whenever they figured out what that thing was. There’s some connective tissue linking the songs, but it’s not until Last Broadcast that they had this self-definition sorted out. Handful of good singles here though and a few impressive mood pieces.

"The perfect after-hours soundtrack" - agree.

This is definitely among the better selections from British groups offered up here. I wasn’t knocked out but I could get on board with this, it was an enjoyable listen.

good mood for some songs Will I listen to again: 50%

Didn’t hate it. Wasn’t overwhelmed either. Hard to believe a 2000s era band of this genre is on this list and I’d never heard of them.

Couldn't pay much attention to this but it didn't sound bad.

Bit of Travis, bit of early Coldplay. Very much of its time.

I remember Doves, although I think I was more familiar with their second album, The Last Broadcast, not sure I ever heard this before. Lost Souls is listenable if a little forgettable, Radiohead-lite but with nothing to make me sit up and really take notice. The opening instrumental “Firesuite” is atmospheric club-chill; “The Man Who Told Everything” is possibly the best song. Aside from the early Radiohead and maybe Oasis influences, I hear moody, downbeat dance music, a little prog-rock. The record is well produced and is decent, trancey background music. I don’t think it goes any deeper than that.

Bit boring

Enjoyable listen but in no hurry to hear it again. A little bit of its time

Meh. I liked firesuite and the cedar room, the rest blends together

So Sonically pleasing. It was like aliens abducted me for an hour and injected silky electronic rock beats into my brain

Not bad

It was a nice enough album but I didn't think 'this is an absolute must listen' while I was listening to it.

This is a good doves album but it's not 1001 greatest albums ever.

There was so much pretty decent rock in the 2000 what happened

did someone say coldplay?

Expected more from this after the bio.

Catch the sun is a nice song, but yeah this album shouldn’t be on the list

One of the pensive bands to come out of the north of England in the early 2000s; Elbow being another - only one of them really made it big though and it's not this one. Unfortunately nowhere near as much fun as the pill they're named after was. It's all a bit of a wash really, songs come and go with elements of colour and interest but nothing else really. Best Tracks: Here It Comes; Catch the Sun; The Cedar Room

Très écoutable. Ben trop long. 3.49 étoiles

good stuff but j not the type of music I'm into. Felt a little bland at times too. Really liked melody calls.

Vibey Oasis

Kind of a Coldplay meets Radiohead and they make and early 2000s indie album. Definitely going to dig into this band more.

Cool album influenced by a lot of bands I love. Problem is that its too similar and nothing new or creative not even their own spice.

Nothing remarcable. Constant tone across album, but good rythmn and sound

Quite beautiful, melancholic and perfect for a road trip. It's a slow burn, but peaks with "catch the sun" and "the cedar room".

This works well as a chill, background album, but trying to give it a deeper listen wasn't very rewarding

Very solid album, though not necessarily my musical preference. I could definitely see the appeal.

Decent alt/indie rock. Listened to it twice cause I enjoyed the vibe, but still nothing stuck with me to remember anything specific

Some really nice slow instrumental buildups here. They create nice soundscapes and build on them very well. That being said, the lyrics and vocals often ruin what i like about the production and instrumentals

I liked this album but feel like it could have been 45 or 50 minutes and a lot tighter.

They still remind me of Coldplay, and I still don’t particularly care for either band

It's ok

Nice enough

Solid if replaceable. A bit like a mix between oasis and Radiohead, but maybe a bit more mellow than that implies.

6.5/10

This is a band that I was completely unfamiliar with. Not a bad album by any means. But it made me feel a bit sleepy. 3/5 #138

boring indie british rock. I feel bad because if I got this album earlier I might have been a bit more generous, but there is so much of this exact sound that it doesnt differentiate from the others enough. Here it Comes was a lone bright spot at least.

Meh. I’m running out of ways to review “iconic” British indie rock albums of the early to mid 2000s.

Lost Souls was serene and relaxing. Probably too easy to listen to. The lead vocalist did drone on a bit too much, but I've heard worse. This isn't the first indie album with its release in 2000, but it's different from other indie music I've heard from the time period. Indie normally doesn't do much for me, and I wouldn't call this album great. But Doves at least brought something new different to the table with their dreamy shoegaze space rock.

While I would technically call this "indie", it really didn't have the same boring slog of a sound that so much of the early 2000s indie has. This is easy to listen to and has some very nice guitar work and instrument work in general. With that solid instrument work as a base, the entirely instrumental tracks were quite nice, too. I would also describe this music as being fairly atmospheric, dreamy, and chill, but again, without being boring or lulling the listener into a daze. It's really too bad 2000s indie as a whole didn't trend more in this direction.

Maybe need to revisit this one

Nice and chill. Good but not for me really…

I had not heard this band before but it was enjoyable. I saved a couple and can see it for just hanging out or possibly for some interstate miles.

I guess this is what it sounds like when doves cry. And while this was a pretty ambitious effort with some of the songs being too lengthy, it still didn’t detract from the overall vibes and was a very cool listen. Definitely a mood setter that probably sounds a bit better during late night hours with a cocktail in hand.

Can’t say I’ve heard of these guys. Even went to some of their hits on other albums and didn’t recognize it. Enjoyed the album and may have to go deeper in their catalog and other similar bands. Can’t say anything really stuck with me so might need a couple more listens to stick. 3.25

Sea Song.

Doves: Lost Souls: Not bad, I enjoyed the whole thing, but it was a little generic and very long for what it is. Still a good time, but they should have trimmed the fat. 7/10

I like the textures and the production- it’s actually very good. That being said, the second half of this album is so BORING. It does NOT need to be 59 minutes long it is a slog to get through the last 3 songs

Doves, so commonly confused and called THE Doves just like Houmous & Chutney so often called THE Houmous & Chutney. But that was just because they are the very best around and so unique. 3.2 8/12 Catch The Sun

Eh. This didn't do much for me. Seems a little bit later than the big chunk of UK artists in the late 1980s and early 1990s that don't really deserve to be here, but perhaps cut from the same cloth. Nothing really stood out.

Actually this was half decent. Nothing stood out to me as incredible, but it made for a pleasant afternoon indie rock spin. Apparently I've listened to these guys quite a few times in the past, but I can't remember them at all.

A tranquil ensemble of ponderous songs that dragged on into a slug-like crawl. I loved the guitar work here but none of the songs had a lot of staying power.

Proof that critics can't tell in the moment what is going to be relevant in 25 years anymore than the general public. But still this persists on the list. It is not bad per se but hardly standout either. The vocals are often muted and too modulated to make out what is being sayd. The instrumentals make ample use of electronics with a lot of layers but the music rarely builds to a satisfying climax or conclusion. Ok but not revolutionary.

The definition of a 3 star album.

Pretty but boring. I don’t know why there’s more than one album from this band on here.

It’s fine.

It's musical wallpaper. Good background music, but it doesn't keep my attention. And there's too much of it. Favorite song: Catch the sun.

It's not that I didn't like it. It's just a bit boring

This feels like one of those albums that you have to be high to enjoy. I don't say that as an insult; although it sounds like one, I do believe that was the artistic intent here. As someone who has never partook in anything harder than whiskey, this one flew over my head a bit (as doves tend to do). Musically, the album is fine enough dance rock, but I don't exaggerate when I say that I forgot I was listening to music a few times throughout this album. If that was the vibe they were going for, then it was done to perfection. However, it also isn't really a vibe that I enjoy listening to. These songs are almost all too long, and some really drag. "Rise" and "A House" would be my two favorite picks, but that makes them solid songs in a mediocre album by my rating.

Not unpleasant, but won’t be listening again

I feel there might be a really good album here but I just couldn't find it on one listen. Maybe it would be higher after a few listens but who has the time?

Very nice guitars, lots of diverse sounds. Liked the harmonica bits a lot. Vocals could have been better. Unexpected but appreciated

This is pretty interesting, but kind of inessential. Doves kind of set themselves apart from other similar indie acts by really embracing their house roots and by accentuating the late night "moodiness" that so many people reference in regards to Lost Souls. This results in a couple of really good songs: I like Sea Song, Lost Souls, The Man Who Told Everything, and some other moments dotted around quite a bit. However, sometimes this album feels a little style over substance, and the very singular atmosphere makes some of these songs run into each other. Although, this at least makes Lost Souls work well as "vibes" music. Despite this, I am not sure I can really see myself returning to this one, I kind of wish it took the "moodiness" further, we are kind of sitting in a weird middle space with Doves as they are. Sometimes they don't push their ideas dark enough, sometimes they don't have enough songwriting chops to counterbalance the darkness that is here. Although I did enjoy this while it was on, I just kind of find it vaguely pleasant most of the time. This score should be read as a low 3.

They try but the one song that’s just a really nice pop song (catch the sun) is the best track

6/10 Top 3 tracks: 1. The Man Who Told Everything 2. Firesuite 3. A House

Better than Coldplay

Very atmospheric and textual and all that fancy stuff. An interesting listen if not the most memorable one.

There are too many obscure British bands on this list. Another album involving an old, or maybe "old" tape recording over the music...why is this a thing? These guys heard Radiohead and thought they could be a band too. The spooky vocals on the title track fits but the song still misses. The back half of the album is better. The Man Who Told Everything is good. Also liking The Cedar Room.

3/5 pretty gud

Pretty alright. A little boring, but a vibe.

"mom I wanna go see Radiohead!" "No son, we have Radiohead at home" Very sad rock:((( Very rad sock

melancholic, popular music

Atmospheric with some interesting elements, but I don't know if I'll seek this one out again.

This is a good rock album. I’d say it’s a funny choice for an ‘essential albums’ list, but removed from that context, it’s a solid album. Nothing revolutionary, but plenty of strong performances.

I really like Doves a lot, but they’re one of those bands whose appeal is more in the emotional realm. In a strictly technical sense, their music is pretty middle of the road. But, particularly in a solitary moment, on headphones, they can really hit deep. So this is more of a 4 for me on a personal level, but I try to be measured and analytical in my scores, so. Sorry guys lol.

This was a pretty decent album with some likeable darker tones which stood out in specific songs. It did just enough to put itself into the realm of a 3-star.

Solid album. Quite a slower/mid tempo throughout. The album gives off more of a moody/dark vibe however there's somehow also a mix of uplifting melodies.

It's nice but not quite a 4 for me

Started off intriguing but became less unique sounding

Koselig bakgrunnsmusikk

"Det er jo fint".

An okay indie pop/shoegazing album from the turn of the century. The first half was more exciting, ambiguous space rock, the second half (especially songs like Catch the sun) more alternative rock. The songwriting is fine but not stellar. It was an enjoyable listen, though I think the right setting is necessary to enjoy it more.

Half of the album is really cool, quite atmospheric and almost ambient with really interesting textures. The other half veers more into Incubus meets Radiohead territory, not bad but not so compelling. Enjoyable listen but won't be rushing back to it.

Britpop that tries to be trippy/psychedelic at times and leans more towards rock at other times. Inoffensive but a bit bland. Here It Comes was a nice start following Firesuite, Catch the sun was good but too repetitive, and The Man Who Told Everything is both a slower song and probably my favorite.

I think I came pretty close to liking this one. There were moments when things would get interesting but then the vocals would start or it would shift and it would lose me again. There just might be something here though and it could be one of those albums that takes some time to really gel so I may listen again and see if it connects any better.

Very dreamy sounding. Midway through, I wasn't sure if this was going to be an electronica record, Britpop record, or an indie rock record. Suffice to say that this is a pretty experimental record that has its moments. Favorite tracks: Sea Song, Catch The Sun

Songs: Firesuite

This is like if Radiohead made longer, less interesting albums.

Typical brit-pop band leaning toward the indie-rock side of things. Firesuite starts the album off in an atmospheric style with burbling synth and measured but BIG drums...It is an atmospheric record with songs blending into the next, sometimes feeling more style than substance. Then they hit you with The Cedar Room and after that atmospheric opening things get big and bold as the drums kick in along with some beautiful guitar figures and plaintive vocals and you just feel the build to crunching power chords that pin you back in you seat. It's a powerful moment that had it not come the album would have come and gone quite pleasantly but without anything memorable to latch not to and bring you back. While The Cedar room is the obvious high point I don't want to leave the impression that its the only hi-light...Sea Song is a beautiful acoustic guitar and piano driven song that has a lovely melody and does get the toe tapping. Rise has an intensity that hints at what's to come. Overall a fine debut from a band that had a very consistent, if somewhat under appreciated career. 3.5 stars (note I would probably give the follow up album The Last Broadcast 4 stars. On the album they toned down the atmospherics and allowed the songs and melodies to stand on their own to great effect)

I never really got that into Doves, but really like a few of their songs. I think this album is fine, but a little too long and not that original. I never really thought this about them before, but I guess they are a bit derivative of Oasis. A lot of the songs are much longer than they need to be. I get that they're going for a late night/druggy comedown, but think it's a bit overdone.

Nice background music.

Atmospheric britpop. Does not sound bad but it's just too plain, predictable and inoffensive.

Never heard of this band, pretty decent

Decent listen.

i am still catching up a bit, and this album i listened to in chunks. the first few songs lost me, but the second half really brought me back. I wouldn't be mad listening to this album again, and with better intent. all in all, a fine album with enough variety to keep me interested.

A pretty chill and melancholy vibe, which really matched the mood as our bus drove through the rainy mountains of Sanqing. Still, nothing really stuck out to me.

This album really benefitted from being able to hang out on the porch watching the rain and having this play in the background. Really laid-back sound and great for some afternoon background music while disassociating after teaching and sitting in meetings. I didn't enjoy this release as much as The Last Broadcast, but it was a decent listen. Middle of the road three on this one.

Generally a pleasant listen but nothing really stuck out. I kinda already forgot what I listened to.

I had never heard of this band, which is not surprising with this heavily British leaning list. Within the first couple tracks I thought to myself, "this had to have been a Mercury Prize nominee," and sure enough... It's wild how often that happens, usually knowing that something was a Mercury Prize shortlist nominee portends a rough listen, but this was totally fine. Seems like it's a vibe for sure, and it probably functions well as background music. Nothing incredible by any means, but pretty solid.

Decent album but not memorable.

Enjoyable background music

This was alright, never heard them before, gppd background music

I have never heard of this band before. I kind of see why (though not in a bad way). This is pretty average music in my opinion. Nothing terrible, nothing amazing. 5/10 (2.5/5)

Si ascolta

There is some interesting stuff here. But I don't think they need two albums on this list

Meh, felt like the album never went anywhere. Simple and pleasant, but not really seeing the importance. Could have been like 20 minutes shorter.

This album is fine. Not bad at all, but bookstore background Brit pop from the turn of the century. I wasn’t missing anything before finding this album on this list (for some reason).

Kind of good, but not super memorable

I definitely saw some inspiration and similarities between this and a lot of other well known albums and artists. Call me crazy but I even heard some similarity with Coldplay. There were definitely interesting aspects but ai also think I was expecting more. I do like this but something felt missing.

Catchy

Rise and The Cedar Room are unexpectedly great.

This was an enjoyable listen, but definitely too long and a bit too dreary at times. Catch The Sun is the bright highlight on this album.

It’s fine. Very mid.

This was okay. Not great, but fine. It had a dreamy quality to it occasionally that reminded me of Portishead.

7/10. It's a pleasant listen, but it's not very memorable.

Favorite songs: The Cedar Room, Rise, Catch the Sun, The Man Who Told Everything, Break Me Gently, Firesuite Least favorite songs: Melody Calls 3/5

I liked a few tracks but it didn't stand out as anything that's necessary listening. Didn't need to be an hour long

Not good and not bad. Maybe like this hungover stadium that everyone was referring too while listening to this?

Some high points that preview some of the high points of later albums, but also a lot here that feels a little underdeveloped and plodding.

It's good, has Nirvana vibes, but I'm not in love with the noise aspect of it.

Perfectly fine music

I really wanted to like this album a lot since I love the Doves, but I can't bring myself to do so. I've listened to this album before and then and now, nothing has stood out. It has elements of the classic 2000s Brit indie sounds that I love and cherish, but nothing cohesive enough to make me love it. Also, some of the songs are just way too long for what they are. Nonetheless, the good parts are still solid enough to warrant an average rating.

Fint nok album.

Ended up really liking this one!

This was decent.

This is more of a 2.5 but rounding up because I would be delighted if this was playing in a coffee shop or between sets at a concert.

This is fine. It's not really distinguished, but I recognise one track (I wasn't watching, so I don't know which one), and it's - yeah, it's fine.

Don't know anything about this band. To paraphrase another review, "Of all the albums ever made, this is certainly one of them." Some of these songs are enjoyable listening, but then get a bit boring. Perhaps if I were young and stoned and collapsed in a couch after a crazy evening...the only song I clicked "like" on Spotify was CATCH THE SUN, but that went on about a minute longer that necessary. Never made it to the end of the album. I find this to be neither good nor bad; a pure ⭐⭐⭐ album. ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 68 🎧 LPs left to review: 933 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 15 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 18 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 18

not unpleasant i was just bored

Nice and interesting production. Maybe I like the somber atmosphere. And electronic music elements are always welcome in these kind of albums.

Vibey chill album, mostly instrumental. Hints of radiohead. Stand-out: Break Me Gently

Have you ever heard an album from a band who is very clearly composed of talented and capable musicians, who are also not very capable songwriters? I know I have. And if I were keeping a list, I think this would end up on it. I have much more positive things to say about the post-britpop era of music over its similarity titled predecessor. Because it maintains the good stuff and moves away from the annoying stuff at the same time. Although the only album in the genre I consistently listen to is The Bends. But that is likely more so because it’s a Radiohead album and not because of its sound. From the instrumental side of things, this album is pretty great. It has this very gloomy feel to it. And I personally love how the guitar sounds. There is also quite a bit of layering going on here, with lots of small details in the background which enhance certain textural elements. This almost feels like a precursor to a lot of the post-punk revival stuff that would come later in the decade. All of this is cool of course, and these guys display a lot of talent. But often these songs lack direction. It reminds me of Arcade Fire in a way. The instrumentals unfortunately tend to meander around the same ideas. It sucks because for as cool as this sounds, the execution of it just isn’t totally there. Best example I can give is the ending to The Man Who Told Everything, which goes on far longer than it needs to. I do actually think I could recommend this to someone. Because there are some quality cuts which don’t suffer from the same shortcomings as drastically. Rating: 6/10

Can't say I've ever knowingly listened to Doves, so Lost Souls was new to me, and it's decent. Dunno why I'd thought it was a more recent record than TWENTY FUCKING FIVE YEARS AGO but it makes sense because this really does sound like a lot of indie music from around that time, you can hear influences from everyone from Radiohead to Travis to Muse and probably 20 or so others, those just leapt out to me without thinking. Some of it I like, some of it is pretty dull, The Man Who Told Everything might be my favourite track, a solid 3/5 overall though. Might've gotten to a 4 if it didn't go 20 minutes too long, but since I'm not given to a lot of indie stuff, I was quite happy with what this turned out to be.

I think I marginally preferred The Last Broadcast to this, but it's still pretty good. It's a little bit longwinded, feels a bit overproduced for an indie album, particularly a debut (I guess that comes from their roots in dance music), but it's still really listenable. It's an interesting sound, bit of early Coldplay to it, a bit of Radiohead, but it really captures a mood. A solid 3/5, knocking on the door of the 4 but not being let in.

Definitely a notch above the 'landfill indie' which plagued the era, but still very much Coldplay-lite for me. Nothing bad but also nothing leaping out at me.

I like Doves and this is a decent album. But not sure it should be on this list. It's not even Doves' best album.

Ah yes the Doves, the band my partner loves, I have grown to like them over time So this album I would think is alright, fine Nothing exquisite or amazing or cool Please don't take me as a fool It is just simply being me That gives it a 3

This was a moody modern piece. I think the only track that really grabbed me was A House. Sort of a miss-able one for me but by no means bad.

OK, OK, OK, I'll be fair here: it's not actually as bad as I thought it would be. Like, I'unno. I'd seen that one of the genre labels it'd been given on Wikipedia was "shoegaze," and between that and the fact that this thing is nearly an hour long... I was expecting a slog, quite frankly. Now, first of all, don't ask me what my problem with shoegaze even is, exactly. Taking a second to think about it, I... Well, I'm really not entirely sure. I suppose it's just an impression I have of its fanbase, where it's mostly hipsters who're really obnoxious about how their taste in music is better than mine. Even then, though, I can't tell you where I got that from. You can only imagine how happy I was, then, that this album didn't turn out to actually be as shoegaze as I thought. (Not that I could easily point it out without being told "that's what it is," but still.) However, that only means that I've gone from my pre-conception of "UURRRRGH, this is gonna be a SLOG" to my current opinion of "urrrggghhh, it's fine, I guess — whatever." I just... Really found it hard to care too much about this album. Sure, I'll grant it, it's got quite a few more melodies I like than I would've otherwise assumed, but... I'unno. It's just got this air about it that it's... Honestly, that it's low-rent Coldplay. And to be clear on two fronts, I actually really love Coldplay, and I don't actually mind it too much when a band's sound is another band's. To the former, well, I own copies of VIVA LA VIDA, A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS and MUSIC OF THE SPHERES — and if owning those last two isn't sign enough of me being a Coldplay fan... As for the latter, well, I'unno. If I like a sound, why would I necessarily complain about hearing more of it? That's why I was never too down on Greta Van Fleet, for instance — well, until I actually heard their music, but I was never gonna get on 'em for "sounding like Led Zeppelin." Here, though... I don't know. It could be that there's this part of my brain that wants to hold onto my knee-jerk negative preconception, so that there was ultimately nothing this band could do to win me over. That can be a bad habit I have sometimes with all forms of media, I'll admit. Just as well, however, honestly, I just... Didn't find this terribly exciting enough to truly wanna give it the benefit. Note that I did say this was "**low-rent** Coldplay" — "low-rent," specifically. The kind of rare soundalike where I just hafta wonder why I'm not just listening to the original. Y'know, ultimately, I just don't think they did the sound well enough. And as for the parts that don't fall under that "low-rent Coldplay" generalization, well, I'm not too wild about those parts, either. At best, I think they're alright, but nothing more than alright. So... I'unno. Give this thing a down the middle "it's fine" 3? Which, believe me, is still a step up from the 2 I was thinking I was gonna slap this thing with. I'm just left figuring, if I had gone in with a more open mind; if I had focused on any of the genre labels besides "shoegaze," I might have been more willing to go higher. Like, maybe the problem, ultimately, was just me preemptively deciding based on next to nothing that I wasn't gonna give it a chance. But, I'unno. This is just what I got out of this listen, and I don't wanna be anything but honest. Maybe a second listen would go over better — who knows?

Atmospheric soundscape to this music, giving it a 3 although I think maybe it's the type of record that would grow on you with more listens

i like and hate this. catch the sun is great, and i’m sure i’ve heard Sea song somewhere before, i loved it. but how can it have such great highs and such low lows…. i’m torn how to rate it, but it’ll probably have to be middle just to be fair.

A really interesting album. Very atmospheric 3/5

Low key, soothing

Lost Souls is an album that feels heavy with intention, but not always with impact. It aims for atmosphere and emotional sweep, and at times it gets there, creating wide, echoing spaces that feel introspective and sincere. There is a definite mood running through it, a sense of yearning and introspection that feels honest, but it often stretches that mood too thin across the album’s length. What holds it back for me is how often the songs blur together. The tempos, textures, and emotional tone stay within a very narrow range, which can make the experience feel more like drifting than moving. Individual tracks hint at something bigger or more affecting, but they rarely push far enough to fully arrive. The restraint feels intentional, but it also drains urgency, leaving moments that should soar instead hovering just above the ground. In the end, Lost Souls is an album I respect more than I connect with. It works well as a backdrop for reflection and has flashes of real beauty, but it does not quite dig deep enough to leave a lasting mark. I enjoy returning to parts of it rather than the whole, and that feels telling.

Really enjoyed this more than I thought I would. At some points, it almost sounds like Foo Fighters with a little less edge.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this album, or the band formerly-known-as-Sub-Sub. It's fine, and at time even interesting, but something about their style seems almost designed to be the soundtrack for some sort of indie film involving long car rides and heavy conversations in coffehouses and large parks at night, perhaps with an occasional supernatural event. Atmospheric perhaps, but not easy to focus on as an album, and I'm mystified that there are *two* Doves albums in this collection, as one seems like more than enough of a sampling (but I haven't listened to the other Doves album, so maybe it's a radical departure?). In many ways, their backstory is far more interesting (to me) than their album (and nicely documented in the Wikipedia entry for the album): the road from being Sub-Sub to becoming the Doves, including losing all their recorded material (and equipment) in a fire, and all these connections to New Order/Joy Division--especially how their manager, Rob Gretton, took Sub-Sub under his wing and guided them to become a better and more confident band (eventually with a different name) until his untimely death in 1999.

I'm sure some people will be horrified that I was reminded of Coldplay on first listen but there you go.
