Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Very Coldplay-like but not as good, IMO. I enjoyed the album nonetheless and found it to be an interesting listen. My main complaint would be that the songs are too long; don't think we need incessant guitar strumming for another 2 minutes after the lyrics are done. One or two songs ok, but feels like every song was like this. Separately, it would definitely sound better driving a car at night, I feel like. Interestingly enough, the song which the album is named for, "Lost Souls" was the worst track on the album. 7/10.
1074 rate: wasn't expecting such a cool find from my own youth this late in the list. Songs are a bit long and the album is close to the hour long like most records from those days but it has very good moments
This is what it sounds like when Doves cry… Doves’ maybe slightly better known second album The Last Broadcast came up on here a while ago and I quite enjoyed it - it was spacey and gloomy, but ultimately seemed a bit safe and repetitive. I was quite surprised then that their debut seems a bit more innovative and varied - maybe directionless at times but for a band exploring and figuring out their sound I think that’s easily forgivable. And boy, what a powerful sound that can be
kind of reminds me of the verve? pretty good!
A really cool album. Touches of Noel Gallagher in here.
A pleasant surprise. Didn't expect much but this one is quite good. Not perfect but I'll give this one another spin. Dreamy, spacey, somewhat fitting if you're a loner like I am. Solid album.
This album was actually really good. Parts of it reminded me of Sigur Ros, others of Everclear, and other parts were just a nice sound that I didn't necessarily associate with other bands. I'll give this one a 4
Cynics will say Radiohead-lite but one prefers to think Coldplay heavy (though comparisons are odious, of course). This is a most impressive effort. Opener is strong and "Rise" is way cool (as was once said [once being 12-15 years prior to his record's release]). Solid+ overall and right up one's alley.
I dig the vibes on this one.
Started strong, lost some luster on repeated listens.
After having undergone the type of setbacks that would have broke a lesser group, the band that would become known as Doves flew onto the scene with Lost Souls. With just an hour to spare, they set themselves apart from the wandering post-Britpop pack with dance-inflected rock soundscapes and lyrical imagery that recalls other bands like their ilk. Lost souls? Sounds more like found ones if any. Favorites: Firesuite, Here It Comes, Break Me Gently, Sea Song, Lost Souls, Catch the Sun, The Man Who Told Everything, The Cedar Room.
I think I really need more than one day to digest most of the albums. I did like it on the first few listens. Strong first half
Хороший альбом, интересное настроение
It’s a lot of noise and not particularly the best noise I’ve ever heard. Lyrics are fine, instrumentation is fine, vocals are fine. This is fine and I enjoy one of these song well enough, but the whole album gets a little heavy. That was my review before the second half. This is one of the first times I can remember that a second half of the album changed my opinion of the album as a whole. No shit, the album is meant to be listened to as a whole. I know and understand that. Usually, however, you can predict what an album will bring based on the first couple songs. Generally don’t get surprised by a second act. This surprised me and I’m glad it did. The two acts complement each other so well. The album gets clearer as it goes on which is a new concept I can’t remember hearing before. I enjoyed a lot more of it than I thought I would. Listened while waiting in line to VOTE today. 4/5
I think I probably prefer The Last Broadcast, but there’s not much in it
Liked the claustrophobic melancholy vibe, got better on a second listen
This gotta better as it went, felt like two albums almost, first part was good, second was great
This one was a pleasant surprise. It's alt-rock, with enough variation to make me coming back to it. 4/5
Bien. Aunque un poco lago se me ha hecho. Pero bueno. Suenan muy bien. Indie rock.
Wow I'd forgotten about this band but I remember listening to it at the time and really enjoying it. I think it's aged very well and holds up as a great example of early aughts indie rock.
Really liked this one when it came out and still do. Ok not all songs keep the attention but on the whole a really good sound. Certainly an album I revisit from time to time
Increíble producción
Rather enjoyable indie rock... almost languid album that peaked with Catch the Sun and the reprise had a strange reverb like sound at the end... maybe just the version I listened to?
Kept me engaged right from the start with its euphoric sound.
Very Coldplayish (7.8) ★★★½
This album has a laid-back, moody vibe, like drifting through a cloudy day. The guitars and vocals remind me of early Radiohead, with a bit of Elbow’s quieter moments. It’s chill, sometimes dreamy, and pulls you into its own world without being too intense. Simple, but it works.
Atmospheric, wavey, and dreamy. Liked it a lot. Lyrics are mostly whatever or just chorus, but the long instrumentals draw out the best of the album. Hit the right vibe for me. Standouts:
Good stuff, not my favorite style.
how have i never even heard this band's name before easily clears most British indie rock of its time and before for me Sea Song and Rise are so gorgeous defo gonna have to give it a relisten later
I wasn't that impressed by this on the first listen, but I forgot to review so I listened again and liked it much more on the second run through. A low 4.
Another band I thought I hated, based on a rubbish TV ad I saw about 20 years ago. Great late night listening - Sea Song and Firesuites were my favourites. It's aged quite well, though definitely has the hallmarks of turn of the century indie - some tracks have Radiohead moments. The tracks where they sound a bit like Coldplay (e.g. Catch The Sun) are probably my least favourite parts of the album.
Bien. Aunque un poco lago se me ha hecho. Pero bueno. Suenan muy bien. Indie rock.
great album
Not sure why but love this band.
Pretty decent chilled shoegaze album. Maybe not bursting in originality, but well worth a listen. 4/5
Yes, this is a soundtrack for the time after party. It is moody and mellow, the lyrics are somewhat brooding. It is coherent and the songwriting ist aspirational and in parts dense. I like the atoquite a lot, the production is satisfyingly warm and lush. It can get stretched in some songs, and if they had restrained from harmonica and a too hard hitting snare, I would feel even better with it
Beautiful and atmospheric, the guitars were talking the whole album, great vocals as well. 4.0
Pretty good, melancholy and chill
Very serene, very demure.
Really cool, found it to be a meditative listen. Catch the sun reminded me of the Foo fighters. The Cedar room is my fav.
This was a real nice one to listen to. The fun, intriguing and unique melodies throughout the album were superb. Alongside the calm yet still commanding vocals it made for a great listen. Best - Sea Song, Rise, Melody Calls, Catch the Sun (MPF), and The Cedar Room Worst - no bad songs whatsoever 4.25-4.50/5
Lemppari: Catch The Sun
I really like vibe of this album. I love the tremolo on “rise”. “The cedar room” is fantastic.
Cool cool cool
Really enjoyed the chill and progressive sounds. 2000 album with jamin weight
Really good listening. Found my self day dreaming from track one.
Beautiful music
Bien. Aunque un poco lago se me ha hecho. Pero bueno. Suenan muy bien. Indie rock.
7/10
Simply an amazing debut
I have a real soft spot for Doves. Yes I can get a little disengaged here and there now and then, but the steady return to hookness from dreampopland keeps me focused. You can hear the beginnings of Coldplay , a continuation of shoegaze, some psychiness, and just enough spaciness to make you wish you were on some club drugs. I really like the constant insertion of inventiveness. Catch the Sun a regular favorite.
There were many moments during my listen of this album where I thought I was losing the thread, but then the song would build and grow and I was swept away. I can't claim to remember a lot of the details of what I heard, but I really liked it.
Dig!
Beautiful Brit rock album
The style and genre is right up my alley. Really melancholic without being sad. The melodies, but vocally and instrumentally, drive the album. I would really love to listen to this while driving at night; I feel like that's what this album was specifically created for. There's a few songs that kind of lose the magic of the rest of the album, but on re-listens it's easy enough to just skip them. Favorite Song(s): Rise, Catch the Sun
Top quality live sounding lo-fi beats and melodies in the first track. Oh? There’s singing too? That’s spoiled it a bit…..but there’s Hammond organ as well? I’m so conflicted now. Really welcomed this band - indie / dance crossover without being even remotely wanky - great stuff. Not sure how this passed me by back in the day - I’d have loved it then and love it now.
This album passed me by at had time but pretty sure I went to one of their gigs. It ticks a lot of boxes for me and best listened to on the sofa with a cup of tea. Really enjoyed it and will revisit.
As a big Doves fan even I have to concede this is not essential listening. Catch The Sun is great The Cedar Room actually unlocked as a song when they did that BBC concert with the choir
June 22, 2024 HL: title track, "Sea Song", "Catch the Sun", "The Man Who Told Everything", "The Cedar Room" Doves #3, if we're counting their involvement in Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast. After their other album on this list, I wasn't super interested in delving further into their catalogue. Maybe due to these storm grey clouds threatening rain all day, I found Doves easier to listen to. The first couple songs weren't all that intriguing, but with "Sea Song" onward the album kept growing on me. "The Cedar Room" might be my favourite song on here, but it seemed like a bold choice to release it as their 1st single on their 1st album, with the slow build & droning bass. Though considering Coldplay filled stadiums with "Yellow" & "Fix You" a couple short years later, maybe not
Rustige luister-zomerrock. Tijdens het schilderen van de kozijnen opgezet in een stevig zonnetje. De ideale omstandigheden voor deze plaat. Zelf de wat zeurende stem stoort mij deze keer niet.
Man eftir Catch the sun, og það er fínt. Restin er ánægjuleg, hljóðeimur sem eldist vel. Gæti þetta oftar.
Cinematic and adventurous production on gorgeous songs. British 2000s indie rock owes a debt to this no doubt
2024-06-09...
Definitely an album that if I had heard this in high school, I'd probably remember it fondly but not listen to it much. It's a fun album, but it is more impressive when it leans away from that indie pop sound. Starts off great, but "A House" is not impressive enough to end satisfactorily on. 3.5/5
Compellingly moody and engagingly (not oppressively) dark and windswept. Opener sets a high bar and the remaining cuts continue in a mostly consistent and strong vibe/channel. "Catch the Sun" the clear winner as single. Worth continued listening. Not as good as Radiohead (obvs), but probably better than Oasis and certainly superior to Blur (as almost everything is).
A nice record that gives me Radiohead-by-way-of-Coldplay vibes. There's atmosphere, but it may blend a little too much into the background at times to truly be an album that should be on here. I still enjoyed it. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "The Man Who Told Everything", "The Cedar Room"
I really quite enjoyed this, atmospheric, melodic, epic. Britpop with some grandeur.
Oooh, this was an interesting one! Elements of shoe gaze, trip hop and a touch of electronica. According to Wikipedia they started as a dance music group with a hit single before a fire in their studio destroyed all of their work in progress, prompting them into a complete change of direction. It reminded me a little of Coldplay, but predates them by a couple of months. I like this a lot!
A surprise to see two Doves albums on the list - this probably the superior.
This was cool. I really really liked the instrumentals. An album that makes me fell like I am floating a bit. In the right relaxed head-space this album goes hard.
"Lost Souls" by Doves, released in 2000, stands as a pivotal moment in British alternative rock. Let's delve into a comprehensive review focusing on lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, while also addressing its pros and cons. **Lyrics:** The lyrical content of "Lost Souls" is poignant and introspective, often exploring themes of longing, alienation, and existential uncertainty. Tracks like "The Cedar Room" and "Catch the Sun" delve into the complexities of human relationships and the search for meaning in a world that feels increasingly disconnected. The poetic nature of the lyrics adds depth to the album, inviting listeners to ponder life's mysteries alongside the band. **Music:** Musically, "Lost Souls" is a masterclass in atmospheric rock. Doves blend elements of alternative rock, shoegaze, and electronic music to create a sound that is both ethereal and emotionally resonant. The band's use of layered guitars, pulsating rhythms, and sweeping orchestration creates a sonic landscape that is both immersive and captivating. Songs like "The Man Who Told Everything" and "Break Me Gently" showcase the band's ability to craft melodies that linger long after the music has stopped. **Production:** The production on "Lost Souls" is immaculate, with the album boasting a rich and textured sound that allows each instrument to shine. The production values enhance the atmospheric quality of the music, drawing listeners into the world that Doves have created. From the shimmering guitars to the haunting synths, every element is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of mood and atmosphere that perfectly complements the lyrical themes of the album. **Themes:** Thematically, "Lost Souls" explores the human condition in all its complexity. The album delves into themes of isolation, longing, and the search for meaning in a world that often feels overwhelming and indifferent. There is a sense of melancholy that permeates the album, but there is also a glimmer of hope that shines through the darkness. Ultimately, "Lost Souls" is a meditation on the beauty and fragility of the human experience, inviting listeners to confront their own fears and insecurities in the process. **Influence:** "Lost Souls" has had a significant influence on the alternative rock landscape, inspiring countless bands with its lush soundscapes and introspective lyrics. Doves' ability to seamlessly blend elements of rock, electronic, and orchestral music has set a precedent for other artists to follow, and the album continues to be celebrated as a classic of the genre. Bands such as Coldplay, Elbow, and Radiohead have cited Doves as an influence, and their impact on the music industry cannot be overstated. **Pros:** 1. **Atmospheric Sound:** The album's lush soundscapes and immersive production draw listeners into its world. 2. **Poignant Lyrics:** The introspective lyrics explore universal themes of longing and alienation with depth and sincerity. 3. **Musical Diversity:** Doves effortlessly blend elements of rock, electronic, and orchestral music to create a sound that is uniquely their own. 4. **Influence:** The album has had a lasting influence on the alternative rock genre, inspiring countless bands with its innovative approach to songwriting and production. **Cons:** 1. **Pacing:** Some listeners may find the album's slower pace and introspective nature to be a bit too somber at times. 2. **Lack of Variation:** While the album is cohesive in its sound, some tracks may blur together upon repeated listens due to a lack of distinct variation. 3. **Limited Commercial Success:** Despite critical acclaim, "Lost Souls" did not achieve the same level of commercial success as some of its contemporaries, which may have limited its reach to a wider audience. In conclusion, "Lost Souls" is a landmark album that showcases Doves' talent for crafting atmospheric and emotionally resonant music. From its poignant lyrics to its lush soundscapes, every aspect of the album is meticulously crafted to create a deeply immersive listening experience. While it may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as some of its peers, its influence on the alternative rock genre cannot be overstated. "Lost Souls" remains a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners with its beauty and depth.
A pretty solid, if generic, alt-rock feel for me. Just barely gonna give this a 4 over a 3.5.
Cool surprise!
Quite like this
Very nice
Like the vibe
Perfect album for repotting plants on a Saturday morning.
Just on the right side of Indie for me, and instrumentally I really liked the vibe of this album. I actually thought the title track was one of the weaker ones, but I added Sea Song to my faves playlist almost instantly because of the tone of it. Yep, a good ‘un overall.
I thought I’d heard Doves before, but I think I might have been thinking about Swans. I listened to this while driving to work and it made for a pleasant drive. It got me thinking about how some bands try to write complicated music with lots of weird chords changes, whereas Doves seem to stay within typical chord progressions but still make it interesting. This was good fun.
Not excellent, but still very solid
The moment I was growing tired of this list, it throws me this curve ball. Nice album but does not blow me away. It will go on my regular rotation though
Forgot how good it was
Love the vibe here, superb debut and sad that this band wasn't bigger than Coldplay. Really melodic guitar work.
That is one hell of a debut album. Had to listen to it in two sessions. Boy do I love that musical texture, though. I'll have to revisit sometime.
very good, well mixed and interesting composition. songs were a bit long/slow moving but other than that very good 4/5
Lost souls was an exciting listen especially when it comes to the production and post proccessing. It's so interesting to hear such innovation in an album from the year 2000, I would love more material like this
Saw shoegaze written on wiki and feared the worst. It was brilliant, close to a 5.
After a run of variable albums it's always a joy to open up an old friend. Doves had two great albums, in my mind, and a third that was still very good. This is a moody, melodic, atmospheric album that sits at the bookend of the golden era of British indie. Not quite perfect but that’s a high bar for me.
Very listenable
Enjoyed
This really grew on me as I listened. I didn’t love the first few tracks but thoroughly enjoyed the end of the album.
Never heard of this group. Quite enjoyed most all of this. Several of the tracks remind me of one of my fave groups, Zero 7. Listened to their most recent album from a couple of years ago — not as good. But I would definitely listen to Lost Souls again.
Not bad so far! 3 songs in.
Enjoyed it
A great album with its own style
Nice dreamy stuff.
Me sorprendió. Si lo hubiera escuchado en esa época habría sido uno de mis favoritos.
Was echt chill
Ik vond dit nice
Great album
Strong 4
agréable
Really great. A little weird. Never heard of them before but I could see getting into this band.
Ambient and ethereal modern rock
Really cool
Pretty nice
2000 Genre: Indie rock, dream pop, neo-psychedelia, shoegazing, space rock. Interesting sounds. Singles: ------------------------------------------------ The Cedar Room (#33, UK) Catch the Sun (#32, UK) The Man Who Told Everything (#32, UK) Here it Comes (#73, UK) 5/5: The Cedar Room 4/5: Firesuite, Break Me Gently, The Man Who Told Everything, Catch the Sun, Sea Song, Lost Souls, A House Rating: 3.75
I like this. Kind of like a more indie, slightly darker, and far less yellow, Coldplay.
I've vaguely known this album for about 20 years. I don't really rate the start of the album. From Catch The Sun onwards it really picks up, but the beginning is quite muddy.
Very atmospheric indie rock. Although recorded over a longer period, it maintains a strong vibrant back-bone.
Þetta eru ljúfir tónar. Skemmtileg plata og fínasta vinnutónlist. Áhugaverð saga bandsins og hvernig þeir breyttu um stefnu.
Virkilega góð plata sem hafði farið undir radarinn hjá mér. Virkilega gott stöff sem ég mun hlusta á aftur.
What a mood! With time, this might be a 5/5. Turn of the century indie with atmospheric shoegazing elements
Doves hit you with some dreamy shoegaze-infused rock of the kind that could only be produced in the late 90’s/early 00’s. There are moments of outstanding beauty, claustrophobic introspection and plainly hidden odes to the British nightlife. It’s most of the stuff that works for me in British rock.
I was in the right mood to listen to this today- it slipped perfectly into the groove. Some diverse tracks- meandering from Post-Rock to Britpop and Indie soounds. A nice, well produced and executed album.
Cool Vibes. I liked it.
Brit pop? Post Brit pop? Good whatever.
It's funny how there are certain production techniques and sounds and rhythms that are so specific to a time period. This had a few that I find annoying, like the whole underwater fuzzy sound, but I did enjoy a good portion. I felt the last three tracks were unnecessary.
This debut album by Doves was reportedly recorded over several years. The sound is reminiscent of Radiohead. It came out 7 months before Radiohead's Kid A. Did 1997's OK Computer influence them or is this a case of parallel development?
Rock alternatif aux accents électros, fort en émotions; me rappelle parfois Coldplay
I'm a sucker for tremolo. I usually listen to the albums at a relatively low volume, just as a rule. I don't need them filling up the entire space while I'm working. This one I turned up. Was "Here it Comes" a single? It feels *very* familiar. Not my favorite, but this is nice. It's layered, has compelling sonic textures. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, but they're serviceable. Not bad.
I think this album separates itself from the output of your run-of-the-mill millennium indie bands with it's "sonic soundscape", created by echoes, programming and technology, in general. Along with the piano, they give the record a moody, introspective feel, which I like. The songs are well-written and the vocalist is well-suited to the music, but it's the production that's the star.
pretty solid
I really enjoyed this! I saw Doves live in like 2018 with Tom FA and whilst I didn't know much then, other than the main one we all know, I enjoyed their performance. Since I have delved in more and Cedar Room on this album is such a wonderful song. The whole thing is a bit more ethereal, almost prog/a bit shoe gaze that you would expect. Loved it
Give it a 3.5. Man Who Told Everything was my favourite song.
Atmospheric and fun!
Great to revisit the Doves as I had not tuned in lately. I think I played them so much when they hit the scene that I had to take a break and never went back. That said, it sounded pretty fresh again and I truly enjoyed it. I think this is a band whose music made a real difference and had a sound that was widely influential.
There are moments that remind me of the trip hop coming out of the UK in the early-mid 90s. And then there are times (Here it Comes) where he straight up sounds like Chris Martin from Coldplay. I like the niche they have carved out and this is one that I will be revisiting.
Deeply pleasant album. Well put together (loved the reprise) and felt the album was generally for more consistent and memorable than the other doves album in here.
Rather nice, really
I enjoy me some shoegazey stuff but this was a little too long. Very soundtrack like. Perfect for the background but again could have cut a couple of tracks.
Doves break the sad-dance groove in for the likes of Broken Bells. The space is never in your face after the opening pan, but the record is an expanding, not thin, thing. There are kinds of movement for the heartbroken, and Lost Souls is subdued: Neither movement nor words are vital to the sat-in emotion.
Never heard of them but it was an interesting album that will require a second listen
This is interesting big atmospheric sounds. Reminds me of Radiohead I'm a way. I'm intrigued by this band who I've never heard of before and will check out some of their other stuff.
If Coldplay and Radiohead had a kid- worth a relisten
That was a pretty good listen for an album I've never heard before. Will be returning to it again!
I really liked this. Not every song caught me, but for the most part I really liked the sound and vibe of this.
A thoroughly strong record end to end - it’s one of those that is better then the sum of its parts. Loved it.
The musical equivalent of Scott Kelly morphing into a human fly.
Haven’t heard of them - a rock album from 2000. Quite like Rock so let’s see… I’m liking it so far - not too heavy and good melodies/vocals etc. 4/5, enjoyed this one!
I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
Never heard of this band before, but really enjoyed this album. Will likely listen again.
I'll have to listen to this album again at a later date. After a listen and a half, it's really good. It has a Radiohead Kid A vibe to me which I enjoy. A lot of space, long notes and acoustic guitar for the rhythm. Good stuff! 4 for now.
Zeer plezierig! Ga ik vaker draaien.
Great energy and song writing. They used more complicated chord progressions than your standard rock band but nothing too distracting. My impression of Doves is a more interesting Oasis
Never heard of this band before but this was solid overall. “The Man Who Sold Everything” had a great melody and the guitar parts in “The Cedar Room” were really nice. Sounds like it might have influenced Bon Iver and Hozier. Would I listen to this album again? Probably not but I’m not mad I heard it.
Not my kind of music, but I can understand why people like it. So how should I rate it?
Not the most groundbreaking sound or anything, actually very derivative - basically every song made me go "Hey, this remind me of [insert 90s band here]", but they always pulled it off quite well. I sure as hell can't complain that there's more faux OK Computer-era Radiohead to listen to. A bit too long and the first half is substantially better than the second half (except for "The Cedar Room" which is incredible). 4/5, will definitely return to this in the future. Preferably while it's night and/or raining.
Really has s nice indie rock sound. Sophisticated and consistent throughout the album. Interesting that this band played house music previous to this as Sub Sub and this was essentially a rebrand. I'm sure it allowed them to bring something unique to their rock sound and help them stand out.
I'm a sucker for mellotron. So when I heard that in the opening song, I was sucked in. Those first four songs just kept going from strength to strength. I really enjoyed what I heard. Wikipedia filed this under shoegaze, which I was not a big fan of, but this I enjoyed. Definitely would like to hear more of this.
A sprawling, dark album highlighted by a unique approach from their old electronic music days. I hate that so many bands, especially British Indie bands are compared to Oasis, but this band builds and improved upon the blueprint those assholes laid out. Always cool to hear a new and important Indie album. A notable step towards the many 2005 and after British Indie albums
chill
Unsure where it singularly fits as a genre but broadly speaking it fits in the British Indie Rock vibe. It feels like the perfect after-hours soundtrack inan underground bar where you could go and just vibe out to the music, yet equally soundtrack an evening session at home with a few friends and a few bottles deep in the wine. With Doves' electronica roots they really know how to hook you in, and keep you begging for more. Best: The Cedar Room Worst: Melody Calls
I reviewed their other album The Last Broadcast while recuperating after doing a hike in the Fiordlands of New Zealand. I was chilling to that album in a cheap and cramped hostel in Queenstown, but really loved the vibe. Their sound is representative of the post-Oasis Britpop sound. I probably don't seek out their music intentionally but really don't mind it.
v chill
I liked this album enough to go back and relisten to the last broadcast, which was one of my earliest albums on this list, and between these two albums doves should've been the main British rock export of the 2000s instead of Coldplay (and I like Coldplay). Lost souls has such a good ethereal yet overbearing atmosphere running throughout the entire thing and it's everything you could want from an early 00s indie rock album. I couldn't pick out as many individual tracks that I really liked except for the man who told everything but there was never a point in the album where I wasn't enjoying myself.
Nice. Dreamy. More unique than The Last Broadcast. The End.
Really cool, moody rock.
I unexpectedly really liked this. I'll put this on the list.
Never heard of this album before - Its not bad. Maybe I was busy with other stuff in 2000? Anyway, its good and reminiscent of other stuff in that period - I hear more Filter/Coldplay sort of vibes than Oasis in here. 4/5
"Lost Souls" is the debut studio album by British indie rock band Doves. Indie rock, dream pop, neo-pyschdelia, shoegazing, space rock. Yeah, all that eventually. Doves is brothers Jez (guitars) and Andy Williams (drums) and lead vocalist Jimi Goodwin. The album was recorded over a period of several years which included a fire destroying everything and following the dissolution of their original house music band Sub Sub. Commercially the album hit #16 in the UK and critically received mixed but mostly positive reviews. It was on the short list for the UK Mercury Prize. An instrumental "Firesuite" starts things off with dreamy synths and a droning guitar. This leads into "Here It Comes" which continues the dreamy atmosphere and sets the tone for the next several songs. Drowned vocals, singing about drugs. A piano and guitar outro. An acoustic guitar and a Peter Hook-ish bass breaks up the dreaminess somewhat in "Lost Souls." Goodwin's clearest vocals. The second half of the album brings a string of their singles. "Catch the Sun" brings the rock-pop, their most traditional straight-forward rock song and it's a good one. Acoustic and electric guitars. Catchy. A fading guitar and they rock out at the end. "The Man Who Told Eveything" continues the traditional pop sounds. Syths, acoustic guitar and an orchestral outro. A droning, shoegazy, feedback guitar highlights "The Cedar Room." It's slower and works even with its seven-minute length. A break-up song. This album is dreamy, melancholy and at times jazzy and electronic creating an atmosphere. Honestly, it took me a few listens to really get into it and I did ,appreciating the laid-backness and showgaze and reminding me of Slowdive and Spacemen 3. If you're into that, you'll definitely like this album. The three released singles are very good rock songs which most people will like.
Really enjoyed this one.
7/10. Enjoyable. On the low end of a 7, slow but had some energy behind it.
Before listening to this I was really only familiar with their follow up, The Last Broadcast which I really liked and listened to a lot back in the day. I think I like this more and I guess like a lot of music it's a little derivative of what came before, I can hear some Oasis, The Bends/OK Computer era Radiohead, some Spiritualized and a little bit of the chilly psychedelia of late 70s Floyd. I dig it.
Other than one or two songs, a stellar album.
Really dug this
Man I enjoyed tf out of this. Pretty dream-like sounding songs with some melancholy added in for good measure. I was driving so no real review by song but can say this would be a good album to lay in bed with all the lights off and take drugs to. High 4 but it went on a bit longer than I usually like an album to be so will knock it down.
I owned this album in my youth. I liked it at the time, mainly for the singles and stand out songs (Here It Comes, The Man Who Sold Everything, The Cedar Room and, particularly, Catch The Sun). From revisiting it with a more mature ear, the singles still stack up and my appreciation of the album overall has grown. It's layered, textured, atmospheric, varied and well sequenced. Really good. Incidentally (if you discount Party in the Abby Grounds featuring Katrina and the Waves without Katrina and 2 minutes of Mike D'Abo) Doves were the first live band I ever saw, opening for Oasis at Wembley in 2000. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Catch The Sun Date listened: 10/08/23
Just misses out on a 5 star rating cos it just kinds of makes you a little fed up with the relentless sameness after a while.
Mjög þægileg tónlist. Þarf að skoða betur.
"Lost Souls was considered by many to be the best debut album by a British act since Oasis' Definitely Maybe" No. Like, it isn't bad, but no.
Album #136, Doves, Lost Souls ⭐⭐⭐ I’m going to be honest with you, this is a very light three for me. It was in one ear and out the other, but I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt because it does feel like a bit of a grower. It’s a long-winded album that’s heavy on atmosphere and low on hooks and catchy moments. I know there are influences like Joy Division and New Order cited here, but to me it actually reminds me more of Urban Hymns by The Verve. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with that album, and I’ll get into that when I eventually review it, but it has a lot of long sections that feel a bit self-indulgent. I feel like this album has a similar issue, but without the big payoffs like Bittersweet Symphony. What it’s really lacking, for me, are big standout songs. It does have a couple of very good tracks though. The first two singles, Catch the Sun and The Cedar Room, are the highlights of the album. I think they’re the best songs on it. But it’s quite a long album at an hour, and it feels like it dips its toes into a few different styles without fully committing to any of them. I kept waiting for it to properly take off, but it never really did. That said, there is an interesting sound here, and there may well be more to it than I gave it credit for on a couple of listens. That’s one of the issues with this list for me: you only really get a day with each album, and often just one or two listens. I did give this one two listens, but I still feel like there’s more to unpack. I probably wouldn’t have included this album on the list myself. I’ve heard the list is meant to be quite British-heavy, but this feels a bit like bias. I don’t even think it’s considered Doves’ best album, with their next one often cited as stronger. Though I’ve never heard it, so what do I know. Anyway, a feather-light three for me. It might grow, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it grows in either direction.
The album lives up to its billing: great when it's 4:00 in the morning, you can't sleep, and you need to be with your own thoughts.
Overall good. Kind of background music.
I hope I might like this more but just too low energy for me. Maybe another listen would help though.
I didn’t mind this, and some of it was kind of mesmerizing, not hard to listen to. It was fine to have going while I was reading, but I don’t need to hear it again. I also continue to believe that this list of “must listen to 1000 albums” is way too big. I would Like to see a list of 100 albums. Anyway, I give this one three stars.
Revisit this one. It was alright, I guess. Might come across better on another day.
Coldplay coming through. I liked this more than I didn't. It's not bad but it's missing something that would put it at a 4 for me.
FIne! I need to catch up on my 1,001 album reading. DESPERATELY.
5/10 A few singles on here I remember, but it's all so thumpy and droning.
Nice soundscape but no hooks
Gostei do álbum. Um rock com cara dos anos 2000. CVJ Vivian.
Not exactly ground breaking music, but still some solid indie rock listening
Don't know them but interesting on first listen.
Another example of mediocracy in music
3.5/5 Nicer Alternative. Schöne, nicht so verbrauchte Melodien und Harmonien. Bisschen radiohead vibes. Könnte potentiell beim wieder hören noch mehr zünden
I tried SO hard to like this album in 2000 since people were talking it up and said "you gotta hear Doves". The album is so bland, it's a C, nothing on it gets it above average and it's surely not an album most people "must hear" before they die. It has some cool production and the vibe is almost there. I enjoyed trying to like it again, but came to the same conclusion as I did 26 yrs ago, it's boring. "Firesuite" is a nice table setting tune but then he sings after that and he's not a compelling vocalist. "Here It Comes" feels like it might have been a hit if some things had been rearranged and there were more dynamics (think Radiohead) but it drips with vanilla blandness and it's a minute+ too long. "Catch The Sun" is the second most popular track (7.7M listens) but again, it fails to deliver & it's also too long. My favorite track is "The Man Who Told Everything", but it's weak compared to what else was available at the time and the vocals leave a lot to be desired (and it's too long). Finally, "the Cedar Room", their most popular track at nearly 10M listens, it has it's moments and has a little more energy than the rest of the album, but it's almost 8 minutes long. Every other song is dull and long and repetitive. The soundscape they were aiming for never materialized. I blame the producer for the length of the songs and the fact that the extra minutes do nothing to enhance what's already been delivered earlier in the song. This is a 2.5 star album at best. I have a hard time giving it 3 stars because it's so vanilla and boring, but I will.
Nothing wrong with this album, enjoyed it. Would never come back to it by choice tho, and doesn’t belong in the 1001.
Ok
Perfectly fine as a soundscape/background music, and I appreciate the production quality here. 3.3
그냥 그랬다. 너무 성의 없어 보이는 평이지만 진짜 할 말이 없다. t was just like that. This may seem like an insincere review, but I really have nothing to say.
그냥 그랬다..
Quite beautiful. I enjoyed listening to this album, I just don’t think I would ever listen to it again.
Good background music album, I need not find the album engaging and I did not dislike it.
This is easy listening. Very generic, very much of this era. Dull and inoffensive.
This album reminded me of the fact that the early 2000s were flooded with Radiohead wannabes. That’s not to say this was bad, but it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to anything by Radiohead. Overall, it was fine, but probably not something I’ll return to in a hurry.
7.5 / 10
There are definitely some interesting choices made here and a few tracks work very well creating an ambient atmosphere; but my main problem is that this doesn’t sound like an album at all. It sounds like I’ve gone to this artist’s page on Spotify and just put his songs on shuffle. There’s basically no consistency throughout this when so it sounds like I’m listening to multiple fragments of good albums rather than one great album
These cats hit my radar in the early aughts. This was a time when I discovered that libraries lent out cds & I was stuffing my hard drive with anything remotely interesting. This was back when you had to own your music of course. Ahh, simpler times. Love this tho. I just know this & that one other album, but they both hit. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty strong. Gon’ do another 3.5, but not quite enough to earn the round up.
OK but not really my vibe
Maybe this being one of the 1001 albums I MUST hear before I die is a geographical thing, because this is the first I've heard of this solid, hazy indie rock. Gets over the hump that most self-important indie-twee (sleaze?) debuts find themselves in by not focusing too much on how smart and significant the lead songwriter is and instead focusing on cool textures, hooks, guitar squalling, ETC. Good for looking out the window and thinking hard about something important (but not too important.) It's a bit underdone in the middle, the songs get a bit cheesy and overly hooky. I would never call a group of people I'll never meet in my lifetime sellouts, but I do think if they stuck to the ambient stuff the album would be *all* killer. So it goes.
"Firesuite" was gorgeous; it just hit all my expectations of where it would go next after each section, making it incredibly satisfying. I wasn't pleasantly surprised too by Goodwin's vocals in "Here it Comes"; a more subtle mancunian voice than that of the Oasis brothers. "Break Me Gently" confirms how I felt about the first two songs; Doves feel like a hybrid of Oasis and Coldplay that works better than it would on paper. "Sea Song" was pleasant enough, though the vocals dragged the mood down for me, but not in a positive 'feeling your feels' kind of way; more 'Now I'm just depressed'. "Rise" began interestingly with some pretty distinct guitar tones that captured my attention and, while the submerged reverb of the vocals was pleasant to listen to, it made the lyrics completely indistinguishable. "Lost Souls" started well enough, but the devolving into some metal clanging accompanied janky piano was just irritating; feel like there is nothing worse than a track you can only listen to half of with enjoyment before you have to kill the backend. "Melody Calls" was surprisingly bland compared to everything that came before it due to a lack of any tension built and released. "Catch the Sun" was out of place, but a welcome break from an entire album of humdrum thus far. Still, it's a perfectly serviceable song, but feels like something that's all too familiar and done better by other bands in that space and time. "The Man Who Told Everything" felt largely forgettable, but "The Cedar Room" was near euphorically beautiful. Like the initial track, "Reprise" was a surprisingly great piece of mood-inducing music for me. Album plays a real strong opening hand; I was toying with the 4 right away, but as it progressed, it quickly ran out of steam. There are definitely tracks here that I would relisten to again, but not the entire album any time soon.
Like background music
I think this album could really grow on me. I really liked it. The beginning of the album is strong.
A sort of half-arsed shoegaze.
Enjoyable album without being mindblowing. Sea Song and The Cedar Room are the standouts for me.
-was a bit worried this would fit into the very broad category i like to call “generic British soft rock”. subverted my expectations by being a little bit unique at least, there are some standout tracks here namely the first and second ones -it felt very long, not necessarily in a good way, but i see what they were going for -Favorites: Firesuite, Here It Comes
Ordentliche Songs ohne Tiefgang. Es klingt wie ein langer, nebliger Atemzug: warm, schwebend, aber oft auch zu gleichförmig. Doves bauen schöne, melancholische Räume, doch viele Songs verschwimmen ineinander, ohne echten Höhepunkt.
Quite a lovely album.
This is almost the definition of a three star album for me. It was pleasant in parts, with the odd track that started to show something interesting, but ultimately it was just a play-by-numbers album that fell somewhere between Oasis and Radiohead. I have zero interest in ever listening to this again, but I enjoyed having it on in the background for an hour or so.
Not quite sure what I am listening to, but don't mind it.
Had not heard of this band before. I enjoyed the album. I'd give it more spins and pluck out some of my favorites.
Fine songs - clean and polished, good production, kind of repetitive and droney, but not bad at all. Not my genre, but I wouldn't object to it.
An absolutely ridiculous choice for this book. Not bad, but oh my God, why THIS? 3/5
It's giving Great Value brand Radiohead. And I'm not too mad about it, it was nice for a gloomy day.

Really enjoyed much of this album, rich and atmospheric. Went on a little bit too long and all the songs started to blend together, though
Didn't really draw me in on the first listen. Put it on again and focused on the singles. Was a bit better the second time round but not really my sound. Drones on a bit
If you told me this was Radiohead I would believe you.
Think this one needs another listen or something, or I wasn't in the right headspace for it. Seemed to have promise, but didn't quite land the way I wanted it to. Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: Man Who Told Everything
This was fine and at times it felt familiar.
This is like a half way house between Coldplay and Radiohead. Not bad but nothing exciting either.
5/10
A little meh but some enjoyable songs on a second listen. Quite ambient and emotive, would be a good album to play in a dimly lit bar. Also quite shroomy!
Firesuite - 4/5 Here It Comes - 4/5 Break Me Gently - 3/5 Sea Song - 5/5 Rise - 4/5 Lost Souls - 3/5 Melody Calls - 4/5 Catch the Sun - 4/5 The Man Who Told Everything - 3/5 The Cedar Room - 4/5 Reprise - no rating A House - 3/5 Average score: 3.7/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ interesting. they sound like a carbon copy of Coldplay, especially on tracks like Sea Song. my biggest gripe is most of these tracks are looooong (the whole album runtime is nearly 1 full hour), but this was an alright album in terms of quality i didn't enjoy this enough to round up my score, but this is a solid 3.5 stars on another rating scale. i liked the album just fine, but it's not something to write home about either
I enjoyed this one, it was a light daydream-esque album. Nothing too mind blowing, but a fun hour nonetheless!
cool, me gustó mucho que se usa de base de fondo muy amena
This one started off as one of the better albums I've gotten in a while. However, as time went on, it kinda just melted together, and I wasn't really feeling it by the end. Kinda Coldplay, kinda Radiohead, a little brit pop. Decent album, but yeah.
Firesuite - 3 Here it comes - 4 Break me gently - 3 Sea song - 4 Rise - 3 Lost souls - 3 Melody calls - 3 Catch the sun - 4 The man who told everything - 4 The cedar room - 3 Reprise - 3 A house - 3
I like this album but their next two are far better.
I saw this & was happy to go back, unfortunately it had not stood the test of time. Whilst there are a few good tracks it just didn't engage me
Zzzzzz
“Catch the Sun” is a classic
599/1001 2026.04.23 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
The album overall is really good, but in my opinion each track sounds a bit like it was made by a different band. There’s a bit of Radiohead in it, a bit of Soundgarden in it, but I’m missing their authentic sound. 6/10
I think its pretty nice easy listening music Best Song: Here it Comes Rating: 6.0/10 Stars: 3
Ambient, moody and very aughts.
Liked this quite a bit, I’ll have to give it a few more listens.
AGAIN thought this band was another generic UK indie group. What a surprise – I could hear Radiohead and Tindersticks and perhaps a bit of Eels in it but I forgave that because firstly, it is not possible for music to be created in a vacuum, all bands are influenced by others, and secondly cos I really liked it.
Pleasant if not life-changing indie rock.
I thought it was very atmospheric. I did fall asleep on the train twice to this album though. It was quite a nice album for that, but maybe not the most engaging. I enjoyed it and the specific mood that it had, but I probably won't listen again. Fav song: The Man Who Told Everything Least fav: Break Me Gently
I think it's really close to being good but then they added extra distortion and production until it became annoying. The album version of making a good professional presentation and then going through it and adding the spinning slide transitions. Favourite song: Sea Song Least: Break Me Gently
Sounds like the soundtrack for every quirky indie movie during the early 2000's.
We liked this. 3 stars at least.
Defining that 2000s sound huh? Listened to this in a particularly apt moment and it hit, but it’s a bit too moody for regular play
I had a nice walk around the reservoir whilst listening to this album which probably helped, but it did have nice tunes and wasn't drowned out by electric guitar. Probably a smidge too long but not awfully long. Wilmslow represent.
Firesuite 3.6 Here It Comes 3.7 Break Me Gently 3.3 Sea Song 3.5 Rise 3.5 Lost Souls 3.1 Melody Calls 3.3 Catch the Sun 3.6 The Man Who Told Everything 3.4 The Cedar Room 3.5 Reprise 3 A House 3.2 Score: 3.391666667
First and last 25% of this album was completely mid, but the middle had some beautiful songs that elevate it.
This is very nice. I was listening while walking around London at night
Nice, dreamy, and undeniably vibey… but occasionally sounds like the band recorded it from the bottom of a swimming pool.
2.5 Behind some of the effects and layers, there was some pretty simple chord progressions that got boring rather quickly. Thought the drumming was a bit busy at times. I am not super familiar with the band but I remember liking the stuff I did hear a bit more than this.
It was fine. Felt surprisingly quick for a 59 minute album. It became background noise as I was tidying up…. And many others have said the same which sums up its worthiness to be on this list.
idk guys expected to love it but instead i spent everything waiting for it to actually start and something about its structure was lowkey confusing the second half of the album is better than the first half for sure tho
Well this was much better than I expected…. Loved ‘The Cedar Room’. Would listen again. 3.5
Pretty good
Decent.
Nothing remarkable, a bit too samey but it was a dreamy and comfy listen. Best song: Sea Song Worst song: Melody Calls Cover check: In the spotlight but invisible, makes you go "hmmm"
doves is one of those bands i've heard of but never heard anything from. it's alright. i like it well enough but nothing is too memorable. probably won't be anything that makes it into my rotation
Worth the listen
Varierande kvalitet. Den instrumentala introlåten var riktigt nice, men mycket annat var mediokert
Positivt överraskad! Några riktigt snygga låtar ändå, men sen kom "The Man Who Told Everything" som bara fick mig att tappa all vibe kring det här albumet. En trea blir det ändå dock!
Det är skevt. Känner inte igen bandet men tror jag känner igen några av låtarna. Tyckte typ det var rätt bra?!
Bang average, couldn't tell you anything about it. Didn't have the one song I knew of there's. Another totally mid album
3/5
++: Firesuite, Here It Comes, Break Me Gently, Rise, Lost Souls, Melody Calls +: Sea Song +-: The Man Who Told Everything, The Cedar Room, Reprise -: A House --: Catch the Sun 5,9/10
255/1001 Doves - Lost Souls Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ If I'm being honest, this took a long while to get into and it was only until the final few tracks that it clicked. I don't know whether that's because it's bottom heavy or I'd gotten more into it in general.
This one was much better than the other English indie BS we’ve listened to so far.
I remember hearing this when it was new. It’s not bad, but you have to be in the right mood for it. This would be a good breakup album, I suppose.
I waited through 59 minutes for that?
kinda mid! i dipped out early and put on The Last Broadcast instead
Like the vibe of the band and some great songs. Found it kinda boring but still decent
it's alright. some decent pretty/indie alt rock
Lost Souls is a cool debut, but it feels more like atmospheric sound stuff than a bunch of tight songs. It totally nails that post midnight Manchester vibe, moody, melodic, and all dreamy textures, perfect for zoning out. Tracks like "Catch The Sun" give it a needed boost, and "The Cedar Room" is a real emotional winner, but some parts get a bit lost or just blend into the background. I dig the band's change from Sub Sub and the whole cinematic vibe, but it's a bit uneven. Solid 3 to 4 stars on any given day, a good intro to their sound, but not as strong as their next one, The Last Broadcast. It's chill and sometimes a bit boring, best listened to when you're in the mood for some rainy day vibes.
Gut.
This one is definitely a mood and I can feel it growing on me. Three stars for now, but once I find time to properly relisten I might upgrade the rating on this one.
Surprisingly enjoyable. Meandering, melancholic ... would serve as great background music in a Japanese bar or something
Enjoyed the first track, but then the 2nd track came on. Oasis' DEFINITELY MAYBE is one of my least favorite albums of all time, so it was shame that this album started to feel like a shoegazer-esque version of Oasis. I've never enjoyed the Mancunian sound. I was beginning to think this was going to be a long listen, but fortunately they didn't do as much of the Oasis sound as I feared. I am never much of a fan of lyrics, so if they had cut all the lyrics and just presented the instrumentals, I think I would have enjoyed it much more. The production and recording is good to excellent, particularly for a debut indie rock act. Fine performances. That rhythm section really knows how to sit in the pocket. The mix and mastering did a good job of keeping the album from feeling uneven. Although, personally, I think the vocals are buried a tad too deep in a handful of tracks. The intro to "Sea Song" gave me a bit of The Cure vibes, in a good way. "Lost Souls", the title track, is actually a shorter track than "Sea Song", but it felt like it stuck around longer than it should have. Their other album, THE LAST BROADCAST, came up in the list first for me. The quality of this album, LOST SOULS, seems much, much higher. They clearly suffered the sophomore slump with THE LAST BROADCAST. So while I respect this album as a fine album, I am inclined to feel like is as an essential album. I don't think anyone is really missing out on what happened in the early naughties if they never heard the first 2 albums of Doves. Favorites: "Firesuite", "Melody Calls", "Reprise" Ironically, their hit on this album "Catch the Sun" I enjoyed the least.
Doves are one of those bands that I feel like I should like more than I do. I’ve tried a couple of times to get into them and, while I always like them, there’s something missing for me. Top Track - The Cedar Room
It was fine, no complaints at all really. Nothing really stuck out though, it was over as quick as it begun.
alright
Pretty cool! Feels like early indie rock that still has the alt rock influence of the mid 90s. I'm sure if you spend more time with this, you might get deeper into it. I like the cool effects and driving nature of the songs. Its really easy to vibe with.
It was fine. Had some pretty good moments actually. Unfortunately this post britpop alt rock stuff is super overrepresented on this list and none of it really stands out
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I can see where bands like The National may have derived some inspiration. 6/10
This is my music as a northern english white male of the indie flavour who was 18 when this came out. It brought waves of nostalgia and i loved the pounding rhythm, the great guitars and his voice and storytelling are well done. But they were always a tier 2 band behind their peers especially Elbow so this cant be considered great, just good.
Nothing offensive. Nothing special.
Mais um álbum do doves. Tenho basicamente a mesma opinião: boa produção, design sonoro bem executado, mas que não me marcou muito.
Favorite Track: Catch The Sun
I enjoyed it, but it’s nothing too groundbreaking. I’d maybe listen again, but it won’t make into high rotation.
80. mostly bad
Tipa kas būtu, ja Cojs mācētu braukt? Pa vidu starp Kino un BBNG. Pieņemu ka daļa pazuda sliktajā skaņu sistēmā. Nav sajūtas ka albumam ir kopējs koncepts. 2-5 meh 6-7 sāk uzlaboties 8-12 bomba Varētu būt 5/5 bet man reāli besī atsevišķas dziesmas (5)
Não conhecia esta banda, foi uma surpresa agradável
We had this album at my house. I can't remember whose it was, though. Not mine! This is pretty chill background working music for me but nothing I'd choose to put on. Catch the sun is a good song! The song I like is from a different album, "pounding" off 2002's the last broadcast, which is to me a better album.
Firesuite, Sea Song and Catch the Sun all sounded like good songs, but I wasn't motivated to repeat any of them and probably will never listen to any of them again.
