Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Some good songs. Overall it was pretty good
An inoffensive and relatively standard rock n' roll album, with psych and blues influences, as well as a country ballad or two. It's fine, but it's funny that the two songs I consider best were written in the Brill Building. As I said, inoffensive, but you'd be fine missing it. Favorite tracks: "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone", "Kicks"
A rarity - 60s pop that's not overly twee or annoying. Sadly nothing much memorable either.
Fun music to listen to.
This is extremely okay. Brutally and immensely unoffensive. A brilliant, timeless, and absolutely astonishing variety of middle-of-the-road pop. Wants to be milquetoast without ever getting there. Jokes aside, if you're in the mood for some good-time mid-sixties pop-rock, go put this on. Stepping Stone is the edgiest thing here, but this isn't about being edgy. Some creepy moments (Girl on the 4th Row, Melody for an Unknown Girl) that didn't age well, hysterical nonetheess. They weren't going for that, but it's entertaining all the same. The perfect example of a "sound" that some cool new West Coast bands are going for (looking at you, Buttertones). Rock and Roll without all the drugs and sex.
Not the greatest band, but did supply some of the music of my life.
This album doesn’t know what it is. I can understand why the band members argued! I love the psychedelia of some of the songs and not so much the “surf cruisin” tunes.
Enjoyable 3.5
Fun album from the 60s.
Only knew them from a couple songs. This was better than I expected.
Sounded like the 60s, I recognized "stepping stone" but I guess the version that I'm used to hearing is by the Monkees. Overall it's pretty typical of a mid-60s pop band. Nothing really ground breaking. It was ok
I liked a few songs in the first half, but the album lost me as it went on.
Beatles-influenced and fun. Stand-out: There She Goes
Já já, þetta er allt í lagi.
Run of the mill 60s music. 5/10
Chill 3.5
Ich fand das Album eigentlich gut, aber es blieb überhaupt nicht in Erinnerung und hat auch keinen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen.
Pretty much what I expected from a 1966 pop/rock album.
Exactly what I think of when it comes to 60s pop rock music. Probably would have owned this album if I grew up back then. It grew on me is I listened.
Pretty good. Never heard of them before this! 😳
Wow, what a blast from the past! I'm kind of surprised this made the list. I also didn't remember Paul Revere & the Raiders dabbling in east Asian sounds.
Typical early 60's sound, like the early Beatles or Rolling Stones, Monkees, Beach Boys, you name it. It's a bit outdated, as only one year later The Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", one of the first concept albums. In contrast, this jumps around genres and tempo totally at random. Still fun to listen to.
It's ok I guess. So 60's it's difficult to be objective and not see it as a museum piece. Still, there's a couple of good hits on this and the rest a bit bland.
Rating: 6.5/10 Good album overall. Fun and catchy, nothing special though. Favorite songs: Kicks, There's Always Tomorrow, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, All I Really Need Is You, Louie Go Home. Worst song: Little Girl in the 4th Row.
Favorite tracks: Kicks
Was going to give it a 2. But it's so catchy. A rolling stones rip off. But still so good.
C’est chill, rien de particulier
very cute
Like one of the songs
Well, they had a lot of influences, sometimes sounding like two different bands in the same song. Anyway, my marking system for this one was to start with 5 stars, then deduct 0.05 stars every time he said 'girl'. 2.85 🌟
Can't do any better than the hilarious review currently topping this section. That writer perfectly nails what this record is all about, and it's a shame he abandoned the project after listening to a third of the albums. The global score for this LP--a precise *3*--also rings very true. Textbook somewhat debatable inclusion here. I'm not even sure this is the Paul Revere & The Raiders LP to keep in such a list, if *really* you had to select one. The more sonically adventurous *The Spirit of '67* might indeed be a better fit. *Midnight Rides*' tracklist admittedly harbors great songs such as "Kicks" and a stellar version of "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" (famously covered by the Monkees and Minor Threat, among others), which may justify spending some time with it. Plus two or three good deeper cuts I won't bother naming here. But honestly, what we have here is still a second-rate version of The Beach Boys mixed with "British Invasion" shenanigans. A compilation might probably be a better choice for your shelf. So I guess the jury's still out on this one... 3/5 for the purposes of this list. 8/10 for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 225 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 334 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 199 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 250
Pretty fun, hadn't heard of this.
Rock n roll baby
Interesting, sort of early Beach Boys esque. Some good stuff
Did not know I'm Not Your Stepping Stone was by these guys. Nice album.
This was fine, but nothing special.
Good 60s pop album, nothing outstanding but solid album I think earns its place on the list.
Nothing special. The album is notable for two tracks "Kicks" (which was rejected by the Animals) and "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" which was a top-20 hit for the Monkees in the USA.
This was ok, but not sure why it's here. I read a comment that this list skews heavily toward the late 60s, but there's so much good stuff in other decades! Very blah, nothing interesting, has not held up the test of time. 2*. Ok, I got less salty as this went along, this is an alright 60s record, 3*. Highlights: kicks, all i really need is you
Bien.
Favourites- kicks, I’m not your stepping stone
I found this a little lame and didn't stand out from other similar bands of the era. The one without lyrics for a girl they hadn't met yet was so cringe. No thanks... Not unpleasant but struggled to care - the more upbeat bluesy ones were better
A minor curiosity of its time.
Aware of this band, excited to listen to this album. Second track “there’s always tomorrow” hands a great groove. Good songs. Nothing jumped out at me here. I can see why they were popular but also not talked about like other bands from their era.
Listened Before? N Grooooovy, mann. I loved this. It was like- hard rock meets pop, meets oldies. Super good sound. I'll be visiting some of their other records to check out more. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Melody for an Unknown Girl
Midnight Ride has some great songs like “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” and “Kicks”. I’m just not sure this is a great album in its entirety. There is nothing particularly wrong with it or substandard. It simply does not rise to anything other than well-executed yet fairly pedestrian mid-60s rock/pop. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-midnight-ride-by-paul?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Paul Revere & the Raiders - Midnight Ride 1966 album that features songs that the Monkees went on to record and chart higher with: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone & Kicks But seriously, it's a good album and Kicks is a really good song. Everything else seems kind of formulaic and typical for a lot of music being produced at that time. It's not their best album and it's not their worst. 3/5
Fun album with a classic 60s sound. Nothing too memorable on this album, but no regrets giving it a listen.
"SS 396" is fun 50s car-head silliness. Some of the other stuff is just too earnest. This is a style of music that really can only be silly.
A lot of influence from other bands like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Not bad all round.
Meh
Midnight Ride is a decent 60s rock album, high energy for the part, the ballads are a bit of a let down. Kick is great opener. 6.9/10
An interesting 60s albums that feels a bit ahead of its time, even if it’s a mixed bag tonally. The instrumentals are great and really punch above their weight for an early psych rock LP, highlighting some fun melodies with bright, plucky guitar. The main thing working against Paul and his crew here is how the tracks jump from ballads to rockers and back without much cohesion - albums were still a novel concept as an artistic idea instead of a commercial one, but this album does feel a little disjointed as a result. Still a fun listen though!
Good, not great. Very 60s. I love the style but it doesn't stand out at all.
Very alright. I can say I liked it, but I’ve heard just about everything on here done better by other artists. I understand why the common consensus is a 3 here. Favorite songs were Kicks and I’m Not Your Stepping Stone.
As ridiculous as the concept seems to me, this album felt, dated. I normally don't think this way, old music is still music. But this did not resonate like The Animals, or The Birds still do.
Liked this one more than I thought I would. “Girl in the fourth row” was hella creepy though
Great album of 60 pop but "Little Girl in The 4th Row" is noncy AF. Are all the other love songs about little girls too?
Sounds like an early stones album. Pretty good.
Nice.
3.4
Had no idea what this was going in, but I really liked it. Was ready to give it 4 stars but the last two tracks kinda fizzled. Some great tunes on here though.
Wasn’t familiar with the music though I was aware they were pretty popular in their time. Started out strong and I thought it was going to be a surprise 4/5, but kind of faltered down the stretch.
I have heard some of these (‘Kicks’, ‘Not your Stepping Stone’), at least as far as I know. Fun bubblegum music for the most part. Definitely reminds me of the Monkees, the Grassroots, early Beatles, maybe a bit like Herman’s Hermits. ‘SS 396’ is more like a Beach Boys/Jan & Dean song, didn’t fit in with the others.. with so many styles and that this was a pretty early album for PR&tR, may have been identity decisions, or just chasing commercial success.. Classic 60s sound that is fun to hear.
Straight up 60s rock pop.
Interesting album. I liked some parts and songs and others were just meh
It's not bad, just not my favourite genre of music. Very rock & roll.
Generic sounding 60s music
6.5/10
This is very different from what I thought Paul Revere was. I love old rock songs about cars. My SS 396 wants to jump off the line.
Interesting, sometimes parallels to the Stones (?)
Some fun stereo effects on this one. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone is energetic with a simple but effective progression. Nice harmonies on All I Really Need Is You. Just about a three star record.
If you love psychedelic rock, you’ll love this album. If you like psychedelic rock. You’ll probably think it’s alright. If you aren’t a fan of psychedelic rock, you’ll probably think it’s annoying. These are all correct opinions. There are great aspects in here that make it fantastic, such as the melodies, instrumentation, and energy. There’s also some pretty average to bad writing and production. Nobody should blown away by the whole thing, but also, it shouldn’t offend anyone. High highs and low lows type of situation. 3/5
British invasion esque american 60s rock. Has what sounds like metal blast beats on the stepping stone song and what sounds like a copy of the Beatles "you can't do that" on the first track. Also a weird track where the vocalist monologues over the music and what sounds like an Italian love song. Nice album but a bit of a mess.
Roots go deep with this one. Simple themes with electric guitar.
They were such a solid band with songs that you forgot existed until hearing them here. A little before their time.
In a nutshell: groovy British Invasion band from the Midwest that try to sound like everyone else but themselves. Strong composition, kinda bluesy, kinda psychedelic pop. Overall: 6/10
I enjoyed it. Pretty easy listen. Nothing terribly mind blowing/bending. Though they’re from Oregon so I’ll give them their roses.
I liked 6 of the 12 songs. That French song was so weird. Lol. Like, why though- it’s not even that good in English. Maybe they were trying to be the Beatles. Nice try.
Favorites: Kicks, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Get It On. Early sixties sound.
Ok
Enjoyed this - although it’s really really 60s. Not sure I’ll listen again but it didn’t offend me 3.0
look i love this era of music, i truly do. and i love paul revere and the raiders. but paul revere and the raiders were not an album band. this album is not BAD but it's not very remarkable. there are a few album cuts here that i think are kind of cool ('all i really need is you' has a '66 psych-tinged stones/beatle-esque feel) and the singles off of this one are great, but really i'm mostly confused as to why this album is listed amongst these other ones. i don't mind it, but i think most people will not enjoy having to listen to this one.
Weird album. Mix of 60’s psychedelic/surf rock. Enjoyed Kicks, There’s Always Tomorrow, Shake It Up, and SS 396. Melody for an Unknown Girl is really off-putting, just on the premise of the song. Could be a joke song, but I didn’t find it amusing. 3/5.
Basic 60s pop. Extra medium.
1966? Alle Achtung! Originell. Drei Sterne.
Glad I listened but won’t be running to do it again.
A fairly fun album, definitely of its time. The 60s psychedelic rock genre as a whole is interesting but a part from some special bands, a lot of it tends to muddle together and sound the same. I enjoyed the listen but I doubt I revisit this one.
not normally a big 60s rock fan but this wasn’t terrible. 3/5
This sounds a little like the beetles to me. Was not bad.
This wasn’t bad. Not really sure what else to say, it didn’t really leave a strong impression. 3/5
Dit kon ik goed hebben.
Te doen.
First of all, Kicks is a banger, so I loved hearing that again. The only other song I was familiar with was the Monkey's version of Stepping Stone. I had no idea this was a Paul Revere song. You can hear the influence of this band on so many similar bands today with a pared down rock sound. There was also surprisingly some proper surf music in here.
Alter Rock. Mal wieder ehrliche, handgemachte Musik. Tut jetzt auch nicht weh. Inzwischen ist es eher ziemlich langweilig.
That wasn't something I would say, I would have missed something if I hadn't heard it.
Felt like they were exploring all the sounds of the popular bands of the era. Definitely has some catchy and good songs. I thought "Melody For an Unknown Girl" was a pretty cool concept / song idea.
A Few songs I liked but had a hard time at the end there
Feels totally classic!
Like the Beatles, but a few song with some edge and grit to them.
Boring over all, a few songs sounded very familiar and were decent.
As 3 as 3's get. Not great, not terrible. Very mid as they say
There have been worse
Perfectly mid, I'd say. It's a bit boring, but it's not bad. There's enough there to be slightly entertaining, but not enough to be memorable. My favourite song was There She Goes.
This album is pretty standard fare ‘67 hippy pop. Somewhere between The Monkees and The Beatles. The most interesting thing is my evolving understanding of what a Paul Revere is. I think I first formed an opinion from the Beastie Boys track where Mic D does the sheriff’s daughter with a wiffleball bat. Paul Revere is a horse in this song? And it’s in the Wild West? Dunno. Maybe I always knew he was some sort of historical figure. At some point I became aware that there was a band called Paul Revere & The Riders. Yesterday morning i found out that there were a 60s boy band somewhere between The Monkees and The Beatles. I also read the Wiki page for the historical figure. It turns out he was a whiny little grass.
The 60s preserved in aspic. I don’t think I knew they did Steppin’ Stone before The Monkees but it’s a great tune.
Many moons ago, my band was asked to record a Paul Revere song for a tribute album. I didn't know the band or their catalog, but we picked a tune and dutifully smashed it to pieces for a record that I don't believe ever got released. Anyway, I have a strange connection to the band though I know practically nothing about them. And, it turns out, I'm not that into them. In the context of the budding rock and roll scene of the '60s, I get that they have their place and from that perspective, warrant inclusion on this list as one player in the phenomenon that is popular music. But from my perspective looking back, I'm indifferent to the actual music. It's just fine. Unfortunate fashion statement to pin to your legacy, though.
Seems like an odd album to include here. Wasn't really getting anything vital or interesting from this. It was OK but hardly seemed worthy of this list.
Pretty basic 60s stuff, some of it total dross. Most of it really - but no worse than anyone except the very best were producing in 1966
Kikcs !, im not your stepping stone
Not too bad.
-never heard of this album or band -kicks is actually a fun song -like i wasn’t sure what to expect from this album and the first song is really up my ally -i do like the vibe going on here -its chill but the guy is singing like his rent is DUE -okay we are popping OFF in not your stepping stone -these songs are groovy. like thats the perfect word for it -some songs are more jazzy, and some more rock which i really like -love that theres an italian version of one of the songs -overall its a 3 from me!
It's not so remarkable, but it's pretty good.
OK. But that's basically it. I read a little bit about them, in particular the way they were influenced by the British Invasion. You can hear it at times; there are Kinks-y guitars and a sense of urgency that might come from mid-60s Stones or Beatles. But ultimately, it's let down by too many quite plodding songs that feel much more rooted in quite basic American rock 'n' roll. They did the original I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, which is much better than the Monkees' version. That's something.
Fun enough
Really quite enjoyable. A shame for them they were probably running a couple of years behind the British invasion and the Beach Boys: but some good pop songs on here
Pop but interesting 3 stars
Nothing special, but it was nice
I mean, yeah sure. It's fine 60's bubblegum pop. Deserving of this list, though? Not really. But it was a light, breezy listen. I'd listen again, were it to cross my path in the future. But it shouldn't be here to begin with, honestly.
американские битлы? ну допустим)
Lekker Beatles achtig albumpie niks te geks
Lekker album, paar mooie klassiekers tussendoor
Definition of forgettable.
Eh okay
Short and quite sweet collection of garage rock, with a little variation, dipping into psychedelia in some parts, then a little crooning thrown in here and there. Apart from a few incredibly lame tracks (Little Girl in the 4th Row is hella creepy for example), it's a pretty solid affair and I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I might have even given it four stars if it had been a little more focused on the garage rock/ pop style used for Kicks and Steppin' Stone, which were the definite highlights. I could hear a lot of different influences, but although I understand that this was a response to the British musical invasion, it didn't sound remotely British. More of a cross between the Beach Boys, with some Thirteenth Floor Elevators thrown in.
Solid 60’s pop rock. I really like the Stepping Stone rendition. Still probably 3.2 at the most. Nothing major.
By no means do I hate the electric organ but I am glad modern synthesizers give artist more options. Enjoyable.
Some iconic songs with lots of useless filler and a song in Italian for no reason
Started strong and then tailed off a little bit toward the end.
Really of its era, cool late 60s, organ on the off beat, blues scales tunes. You can hear some country inspiration at times too. Given that it is an American late 60s guitar album, I thought to myself, 'I wonder if he will tell me about his fast car on this album?' About halfway through there was no sign of it and I thought, 'he is absolutely dying to tell me about his car'. Melody for an Unknown girl has no lyrics but with every honk of the sax I could hear his desire to tell me about how fast his car is. On SS396 he tells us all about how cool and fast his car is. I fucking knew it.
It's alright.... Standouts: (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone, Melody for an Unknown Girl, Kicks, Others: All I Really Needs is You, Get it On, Louie Go Home 3.5
This is definitely an album with music on it. I know that for sure. But I really don't have anything to say. Because at this point, I have already written about and reviewed like a dozen albums that sound just like this. So if you want my thoughts on this record, go look at any of those reviews. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone sounds pretty cool I guess.
Good
This album doesn't do much for me, but I can't really argue about it with such hits that it has.
So very very 60s rock and roll...no complaints
This is just okay, there's a lot of pop mixed with psychop and none of it is really bad
Hit and miss, I was most attracted to the rockin numbers like "Stepping Stone". The album felt a little incoherent in some places the low point for me being "Little Girl in the 4th Row" which sounded embarrassingly like the Beach Boys.
Songs like Kicks are pretty good, but then there are songs like SS 396 that are just poor versions of songs by the likes of The Beach Boys. Total mixed bag.
An interesting 60's listen. They still have the reformed boy band properness to them like the early Beatles, but they're also cutting a bit loose and moving more towards Rock. Surprised anyone was in Boise in the 1960's anyway, especially for a band to come out of there. Nothing mind blowing, but a notable step for American music
Mostly kinda bored by this. The first songs is really good, but after that its not very interesting. Its still ok tho.
Very 60s. Fun to listen to.
The first track was incredible, but it was mostly downhill from there. Not bad, but it's no "Revolver" either. Begging on my knees for the generator to bless me with something interesting, because I've been on a dry streak 🙏
Not familiar with the band but of it’s time and not bad to listen to as an album.
Sounds like if The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones had a baby and it made this nice but not particularly memorable record.
Very 60's rock and roll but others including the monkeys did it better in my view thats why they covered their music.
Quite random. Good in places though.
Se me hizo fácil de escuchar, podría hacerlo de nuevo, me gusta la instrumentación, no encontré mucho que destaque pero me gustó
Raiders of the Monkees, Byrds and Beatles.
A lot of fun even if they sound like every other band of the era but without the hits.
I'm Not Your Stepping Stone is wel catchy.
Fun 60’s rock with a some psychedelic style, some Beach Boys pop and some country pop. I love “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone.” I’m more familiar with the Monkees’ version. In this version, the vocals go harder. Really great.
Very 60s, not bad.
It’s mostly ok, but they’re not offering anything that the Stones or The Beach Boys didn’t do better.
They’ve got a beach boys sound, mixed with a little bit of clash style punk. Starts of with a few good songs then kind of falls flat.
Yes, I like this a lot. Not really psychadelia, not really rock and roll, and not rock. It has a lot going for it. The songs tell stories, which I appreciate. How are these guys not better known? Actually, this album ends poorly. Melody for an unknown girl sounds like someone doing a bad Ronald Reagan impression, and it goes further downhill. SS396 is just terrible.
grew on me after a few songs, really fun guitar tone that added a lot to songs that are otherwise not super interesting
probably a bit better than it needs to be
Sounds of the 60s! Pretty good (if incredibly derivative in every conceivable way) and some decent tracks on this album I hadnt heard before. 3/5
No Revolutionary War allegory. 3/5.
Very enjoyable listen with such a 60s pop vibe to it. There are probably other better bands and albums from the period but I enjoyed it and nearly 60 years ago I can imagine it would have got a lot of air time.
Layered, sumptuous, sincere. I really enjoyed this and I did not expect to.
It's fine. Come for Stepping Stone, stay for the workmanlike rest of the record.
Sound like a Monkees cover band
It existed and it was fine.
So cute and fun! I am dancing. Favorite tracks: Corvair Baby, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Kicks, Take a Look at Yourself, Melody for an Unknown Girl, Shake It Up
I’m Not Your Stepping Stone always sounded a little out of place in the Monkees discography but i never thought about how it could be a cover. cool to hear the original
I love 60's music and classic rock in general, but some of it hasn't held up well over the years. This is one such album. It sounds dated and anachronistic. The instrumentation, production, and vocal style all sound hokey and simplistic. It's okay, but there are so many other great examples from the 60s that are better. 2.5 stars, rounding to 3.
just okay to me.
Felt like they were throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. Some songs sound like the Beach Boys, some like the Doors.
I hadn't really listened to them but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Very forgettable but not bad.
I swear I already listened to this one. And while it is indeed fine it hardly feels like "required listening." Don't get me wrong, there are some jams to be had here (I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, All I Really Need Is You, There's Always Tomorrow), but I can't shake the feeling that this sounds a lot like other better bands from the same era (Byrds, etc.). Far from bad, but also not great. For me this is perfect 3 territory.
Solid
These honkies can play! Got some 60's beach rock vibes in this album. This album was an interesting mix of upbeat rock, some love songs, and some other slow songs. Some pretty cool songs in here. Feels like a 3.5.
Sounds like an rock album from the 60s
Somewhat disappointing. Not sure why. Much prefer the monkees doing Boyce and hart for example.
There are interesting moments featuring chromaticism and interesting chord changes, but overall, there's nothing much here that stands out to me. It's fairly generic 60s rock down to the jangly guitars and the hammond organ. The lead vocals are good though; there's a grit to them which give an edge to the otherwise bland music.
Apart from the cover of Steppin' Stone I had heard of anything else by the band. My initial impression of the album artwork was the text "Featuring Kicks", with that being the opening track. Just marketing? or was that album purely a vehicle for pushing a single? Kicks turned out to be okay opener, but had a sucky fade out, and didn't flow nicely with the following track. The rest of the album is a mixed bag of 60s contemporary sounding songs, some are good, others less so. What I did find interesting was this feeling of restraint rebellion, a punky underbelly that couldn't quite punch through. Classic album, nah. Glad I listened to it before I die, yeah.
Never heard this before but was pleasantly surprised. First half is stronger than the second but still a strong 3.
This is the FIFTH studio album. Maybe they lost one of the previous 4. Although there is a song with the word 4th in it. The sound is really 60s.
You pretty much know what you're getting into, as this is the sound of 60's rock/pop with clean melodies and harmonies. Kicks starts it strong, but the remainder is pretty forgettable. Nothing offensive but nothing exciting either.
Immediately thought of Quentin Tarantino.
😺
vous serez surpris de savoir qui ont été les fameux raiders (40 mecs différents)
Sounded like a Beach Boys wanna be band.
Super Sixties!
Solid bluesy rock. But nothing that stands out too much
I really liked the Italian song that was on this album. It was completely unexpected but really added to it.
It's certainly old fashioned but it's one of the better of the old fashioned ones.
I was torn between a 2 or 3. I’m going 3 because i’m not your stepping stone is a good song. rest of the album kinda meh
It was alright. It had that 60s pop feel to it. Reminded me a lot of the Monkees in fact one of the songs is later sung by the Monkees (it's true they didn't even write their own songs). I will round up.
This was more interesting than I expected, their sound is varies, sometimes like Beatles/kinks, sometimes beach boys, sometimes stooges. Not sure they do any of it better than those bands but I enjoyed it.
The album has a definite 60s sound for better and worse. It's abit of mixed bag but there are plenty of enjoyable tracks. Highlights: Kicks Ballad of a Useless Man I'm Not Your Stepping Stone
Never heard of these before... Quite a mix of styles here and I enjoyed some of it. Other bits of it not so much! Some felt very dated and others I wouldn't have placed as being from the 60s. Stepping stone and take a look at yourself were the best tracks. Not bad overall but probably won't be going back
I expected a much darker sound from this album just based on the cover, but I liked it nonetheless. Nothing too different, and it reminds me of earlier Beatles and Beach Boys. Overall pretty alright. Fave track(s): Kicks, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone
“There’s Always Tomorrow” painfully slowed things down and made me worried for the rest, but overall Paul Revere & The Raiders’ “Midnight Ride” is much more like the opener, “Kicks.” I think it's the Monkees version of “Stepping Stone” that I recall, but that’s a great song and glad to hear the original.
Kicks and I'm Not Your Stepping Stones are good tracks. This album didn't really click for me though.
This is a really good 1960s rock sound and I expect they had the same musical influences as the Beatles, Stones, Animals, etc. It must have felt strange being American and having to play second fiddle to the British invasion bands. There's Always Tomorrow and several other songs show that they were quick to incorporate the nascent Psychedelic sound. (Eight Miles High was released just a few months before this Raiders album.) Since I never really followed this band it's hard to get too excited about them almost 60 years later.
Just a really good rock album. A couple bangers. Solid 3. T3B 1. Kicks 2. I’m Not Your Stepping Stone 3. All I Really Is You
Really thought I would enjoy this more. Pretty mediocre album for a genre I usually really Love.
There's the hits which sound great and the production but overall this is second rung stuff compared to other music of the era. On the production side, it is hard to pick if this is cutting edge or throwing all the tricks of the time and hoping they form something cohesive.
The first track was a banger so I had high expectations for this album; however, there were some questionable choices... girl in the 4th row, the instrumental dedicated to some girl he hasn't even met and the song with the Spanish lyrics sung phoenetically all suck, and what's with the weird Beach Boys ripoffs near the end? I'm giving it an average rating because I did enjoy some of it.
Kicks- 7.8 There's Always Tomorrow- 8 Little Girl in the 4th Row- 7 Ballad of a Useless Man- 7.2 I'm Not Your Stepping Stone- 7.4 There She Goes- 6.8 All I Really Need Is You- 7.5 Get It On- 6.1 Louie, Go Home- 6.0 Take a Look at Yourself - 7 Melody for an Unknown Girl- 8 Shake it Up- 6
Pleasantly surprised by this one.
High 3
- Cool songs but also boring songs - I like the style though - Kinda old feeling - 6.2/10
For how old the album is, surprisingly good, but like all these old rock albums, lots of the songs are very similar and it gets old quick.
A fun, rowdy little album. Very upbeat with really quick and catchy songs which makes it a very easy listen. Almost feels like if The Strokes made music back in the '60s. 6/10
4th January 2022 Listened while working from home. Chilled evening, watched fisher king then an episode of 1971. A heady mixture of 60s garage, country, folk. Saw Tarantino has used them in one of his films which feels right. 3.5 if I could.
A real mixed bag, but a fun slalom through mid-1960s R&B for all that. The lesser material is mawkish dreck - the album originally finished on 'Melody for an Unknown Girl' which is nauseating slush of the ripest variety. But the best - by which I mean 'Kicks', with its ringing Rickenbacker riff, and the frantic 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone', is five-star stuff. The latter features an especially impassioned vocal from Revere; at one point he's almost choking on his words. Ups and downs, then, so a high three stars seems about right.
Pretty fun listen and enjoyable overall. Does it sound like the Beach Boys a lot of the time? Yes. Yes it does. There are worse things a band could do... Coincidentally, I'm reading the novelization of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (which is actually really good, fyi) and this band comes up a lot in it for whatever reason. I'll throw 'em a star for that.
good sixties things
Strong mid 60's fayre. There is no distinctive sound to define the band. Much a case of sounds like this band, no its that band. I suppose get this and save yourself buying others thinking you have an album by those other bands.
Doors tyyppistä röckiä
3.5
Allt í lagi miðsjöundatugar rokk, ekki leiðinlegt, hvorki leiðinlegt né eftirminnilegt.
Midnight Ride is the fifth album by American rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders. It was promoted by the US top 5 single "Kicks" which made the album popular. This album has been certified gold in the US and is considered the band's pinnacle. This was a great rock and roll album that gave me nostalgia, even though I wasn't born until about 30 years after the album. I'm glad I had a chance to listen to it.
Did not know the band and found the album pleasant but not special. So 3*
Goed
2.5/5. This music is strange. At times I get some Beach Boys sounds, but then some of their other songs are just not that good. Overall, this is fine, just a little boring for me.
I’ve always liked the song Kicks, and I am familiar with the tune I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone. The rest of this is new to me. I like the generous use of organ. Kicks is definitely the stand out track here. I didn’t love the Little Girl in the 4th Row (in English or Italian), but the bonus car songs (SS396 and Corsair) made up for those. Overall a groovy time.
Klämkäckt!
I don’t have the faintest idea why this is on the list. It’s not bad, just ugh. 5/10
This did that 60s rock sound very well, if you ever need/want to listen to that style the this is your album
A little more rocking than most bubblegum pop from that era.
Pretty nice 👌
Yeah not bad. Could've done without the spoken track but hey.
Some good tunes on here, good bit of classic nostalgia, but also some dodgy attempts to copy other bands that don't really come across
Buenas melodías y mejores hooks.
Big fun. That weird space when mop top pop started mutating into something more trippy. The instrumental is rubbish, though.
Best Song: I'm Not Your Stepping Stone. I can see, especially when the vocals get rawer and more akin to a growl, how this track would have gone on to influence a lot of the bands that came later. Worst Song: Melody for an Unknown Girl. The song itself is fine, whatever, but those spoken word sections are appalling. Jesus, self-awareness was a different beast in the 60s. Overall: Definitely seems like an album caught in a transitional period of music, with one foot in the future for progressive songs like "Stepping Stone", and one foot in the past with the more tempered, rock-and-roll beats that make up the rest of the album. They can't decide if they want to be Led Zeppelin or the Monkees. More of that future-oriented music would have made this album much better for me.
Entertaining bubblegum pop with an edge as Paul Revere & The Raiders try and out do The Beatles by apeing their style. Stepping Stone is a classic.
Cool
Pretty enjoyable album and one of the better 60s rock groups I've heard. However this general era of rock just isn't my thing, especially with how far rock has come since then it just doesn't hold up quite as well.
A couple of really great tracks like Kicks, Steppin’ Stone and Take a Look at Yourself keeps this record fun throughout. A few fillers here and there is almost unavoidable on a record like this, so I’m really not that bugged about that; even though it’s a shame that two of the weakest tracks, Get It On & Louise is right next to each other. A fun record nonetheless!
eu gosto muito desse albuns da segunda metade dos 60, tem uma pegada the doors e uma marginalidade the who
Listened to on 6/26/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: kicks, there’s always tomorrow Love the 60s energy with the tambourine - very easy to listen to but nothing wildly memorable
actually not that bad
Sounded okay, but very unlikely I'll put this on again.
Eclectic but ultimately not for me
Decent 60s beat pop - very Byrds-esque chiming guitars on some songs. Not Your Stepping Stone is the famous song, covered by The Monkees and The Sex Pistols.
No täähän oli yllättävän kivaa. 3.5/5
yeah like great rock but nothing special
feels like they're copying a ton from The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and the Beatles
Yeah this is from 1966.
It's okay. I want to highlight two laughably obtuse statements from the entry on the list, however. "In the period that remains the high-water mark of pop music..." No, just no. The 80s were easily the high-water mark for pop music, with artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna towering over the genre while new wave gave us a cross-pollination of post-punk weirdness and radio friendly hooks. To think that pop peaked in the 60s is to live with your head in the sand. You shouldn't be writing about music. And second, "Pop-punk just does not get any better." No. Just no. To call this album punk is an absurd stretch - the genre was embryonic at this point - you could make an argument that it's proto-punk, but that's still a stretch. There are a couple moments here and there on this album that share a clear lineage with the punk genre. But this most certainly isn't the best pop-punk. Beyond the absurdity of calling something the best of a genre it isn't even in, it's not even as good as a Ramones album. It's about on par with the best Green Day album, but Green Day isn't the peak of anything. Fuck outta here with this jobber BS.
Mostly just typical 60s pop-rock with a few standout tracks. Classics: None Standouts: Kicks, I"m Not Your Stepping Stone, All I Really Need is You, Melody for an Unknown Girl Very Good: Little Girl in the 4th Row, Take A Look at Yourself 3 / 5
Classic 60s incl I’m Not Your Stepping Stone
3.5 - It’s got that swinging 60s “groovy, baby” vibe. Austin Powers probably shaves his balls to this music. Comes with a predictable dose of pedophilia (see “Little Girl in the 4th Row”).
I'm expecting solid 60's rock and roll. Kind of a silly cover, though. First song is familiar. Channeling future Nancy Reagan I guess. As the rest of the album spools by many of the tunes are familiar. Straight middle of the road undifferentiated 60's rock with (let's be honest) dorky lyrics. The album is fine, the group is fine, there is a reason they had so many hits. They can write a catchy tune. But to me it sounds like the are inspired by everyone else, not pushing the envelope so much themselves. Which is a nice comfortable space and can produce enjoyable music, which this is. But did I need to hear it before I die? Not especially. Paul Revere and the Raiders are the SS 396 of 60's pop.
Very conflicting deciding if its cool that their music gets featured in Tarantino movies and sounds like a time capsule to the 60s, or if it's uncool for the same reasons. Guess it depends on whether I can tolerate the psychedelic organ/keyboard sound or not. Overall it is a meh but there is some nice tracks like Kicks, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, and Take a Look at Yourself. Has a good guitar tone too which I can't fault.
This was better than I thought it would be.
This was a good if somewhat generic sounding 60’s pop-rock album. Enjoyed it even if not really breaking new ground.
Has a wildness to it with guitar sounds on KICK (the stand out track) reminding me of what the Velvet Underground sounds like a year later (it has proto-punk quality) but they are by no means as out-there as Velvet Underground and is instead more blues rocky. It is an alright listen, I'd say it is a big 3 but have a hard time going to 4.
It's a fairly enjoyable mid 60s rock album.
I’ve never heard of PT&TR before now but have heard songs like stepping stones in the past. Certainly influences from the beach boys, Rolling Stones and Beatles, as well as blues, skiffle, a bit of C&W as well as 60’s pop. Not a bad album, as others have said it’s a shame they couldn’t have focused their sound a little more and become more individual.
Enjoyed this oldie especially SS 396 Chevelle song
One of those '60s psych rock albums that all kind of blend together. It's alright, but nothing crazy. Favorite tracks: Ballad of a Useless Man, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone, Melody for an Unknown Girl. Album art: I do like this cover. Much spookier than the ordinary band photo, I appreciate the effort. 3/5
Rock and roll animoso. Encajaría en alguna película de Tarantino o de Austin Powers.
Cest boon, un bon vibe rock and roll. Pour le meme genre j’ai mieux les albums rock classique de cette liste.rolling stone. 3.5
This isn't the Beastie Boys? Best track: All I Really Need is You
Some good stuff
Not very memorable
I thought it was fun and interesting. Nothing out of the ordinary but it was cool !
4 Great album. Very nice vibe. Fuckin'ell but the harmonica is back raping my ears in "Get It On" 3
Good old rock
Kinda fun I guess, although I'm not entirely sure why its on the list
Nice pop, didn't massively stand out 3.3
Nova amostra de rock clássico com boa pegada
6/10
Kinda boring. Never listened to Paul Revere and was expecting something closer to the Animals but this album didn’t really grab my attention
I'm getting a strong sense how hard it must have been to stay relevant as an American rock band in the mid-1960s. You've got to keep it hooky, keep it fresh, offer something more than the average frat band. It's pretty palpable here, listening to the Raiders try to figure out their sound. That said, this album was a fun listen, better than I expected. Stylistically it's a little wacky, like they don't know if they want to be a garage band or to try and be the Beach Boys or the Byrds, so why not all of the above. To be fair, they do a pretty good job at it. It's punchy, energetic, and musically pretty solid. No, none of these songs are especially inspired music. It is mostly an enjoyable listen though. I did not realize the Raiders actually released "Stepping Stone" prior to the Monkees. Their version is actually pretty excellent. Fave Songs: There's Always Tomorrow, Kicks, There She Goes, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone
Classic 60s album. Nothing spectacular compared to the bigger names from that time.
It has a lot to contend with in its era, nothing incredible and bit of it are pretty corny and leans into the 1950s early 60s pop cringe, but still it brings enough to the table to spice up the 60s. 3 stars because I love it and I hate it
Enjoyed the classic 60s vibe.
No está mal, se deja escuchar. Tiene un par de temas buenos: "Kicks" y "I'm not your stepping stone". Me ha gustado también la "surfera" SS 396.
Not a bad albu, starts out with some fine songs. Love their take on Stepping Stone. It gets a little silly at the end finishing with two songs about cars that are both pretty lame. All-in-all a fun listen. 3.5 stars
Suonava malissimo in contronto). Per me è un 3 pieno, forse anche grazie a Sinatra!
Jamma, måst int lyssna före död dock
Good, enjoyable pop songs
Decent, fun sounds here and there.
Ok - recognised at least one song (stepping stone)
Groovy
Manages to sound like The Beatles, The Doors, and The Beach Boys all at once, while predating pretty much all of them. That counts for something!
typical 60s softrock
As 60s as it gets. Psych rock
really striking instrumentals, but the vocals are really dated
The lead off track and single were fun and well written, as is most of the album. Nothing life changing or truly memorable, but not bad by any means.
"There's Always Tomorrow" is basically the same as Bob Dylan's 115th Dream Solid meh - seems like pretty typical 60's rock. A bit copycat of the Beatles. Not offensive generally but also don't really get why this would be special.
Mmmmm, mucha variedad de géneros en un mismo álbum. No identifique el género del grupo. Las canciones son entretenidas y tan diferentes entre ellas.
Early psychedelic work. Frank Zappa vibes. Pretty good, but I’m not crazy about it.
nice... soft...
Solid, fun to listen to classic rock.
Pretty solid little 60s rock album
Did they want to be The Beach Boys? it was ok.
Not bad- definitely getting Beatles vibes. 3 stars.
Surprisingly decent - or maybe I’m desperate for this for awful run of albums to end and this was simply better than the rest recently
3.5/5 strong beatles vibes, relisten
