Reviews (page 5 of 7)

It was kind of noisy

Had not heard this band. Interesting listen, but not sure how much I like them at this point, but the music grows in you. 3/5

Godt men også nemt at glemme

Solid...in general I love shoegaze. Not sure this really fits my idea as a pillar of the genre though. 3.5/5

They have some great songs but also some less great songs on here. I want to love it but just can't quite get there.

Like most shoegaze, there were a couple of songs on here that caught my attention and I kind of liked, but for the most part it was kind of easily forgettable.

I listened to this for another list, and didn't really care for it. I gave it 2/5 for that one. It's sorta boring and I can't get entranced with it or anything. There's just not enough going on. I like it a *little* bit more on 2nd listen, so I'm willing to give this... 2.5/5

I like a bit of shoegaze. This is solid but not as good as MBV or Slowdive. A high three.

Musically bland, and brittish :(

This sounds like nothing more than over-hyped early 90s alternative/grunge rock with some beach-vibes. It's not bad, and the longer the album plays, the more I've enjoyed it.

Obvious Oasis influences aside, this is the very definition of OK. Not great, not bad, just OK.

alright

I'm going to be honest – I thought this album and Panopticon by Isis were the same album until today, solely based on their blue ass covers. At least now I know I have a preference for post-metal over shoegaze, even if that makes no sense intellectually. I don't hate it, though, it's just that sometimes it leans too much into shoegaze, and other times it leans too much into Britpop, and I don't particularly love either of those subgenres. Mostly, I just wish these Brits would stop ripping off the bass riff from "Taxman."

It’s ok

I don't mind it but it's not my favourite Shoegaze.

there's only so much shoegaze i can listen to before i zone out...

There's some stuff I like in this album, like Dreams Burn Down, Vapour Trail, and Unfamiliar. There's other stuff I dislike about the album, like Nowhere. Sennen is an odd one because I do like it, but I think the guys voice takes away from it. Either way, none of it was good or bad enough to sway me either way. Ultimately this is on the boring side for me, but there's a world where I could really get behind this. Maybe if they upped the tempo a skosh. Would be better if the singer wasn't there I think.

Some nice loops at the beginning reminiscent of the Beatles. Had some work I was doing so this was in the background, but I'm on Nowhere and this is some fuzzy ass shoegaze. Really down with this. Unfortunately there was just too much in there that didn't really grab me. Might come back to this because I can really fuck with some shoegaze it just feels hit or miss to me.

Band Iv never heard of, this is a good shoegaze/brit pop album, but also very forgettable if not paying attention.

Have I heard this album before? No Highlights: Seagull, Kaleidoscope, Vapour Trail, Unfamiliar, Sennen, Beneath, Today Rating: 7/10 ‘Seagull’ really kicks this album off with a bang, love the energy given by the driving bass line and jangly guitars. Unfortunately there is a run of tracks after the first couple that I didn’t find particularly interesting. ‘Vapour Trail’ is great and the album ends strongly with some lovely tracks. It’s good.

I don't really like shoegaze as a genre, but if I had to listen to some, this wasn't bad.

That was boring. More than once I had this irritation of something droning on and on in my ear only the remember that I was listening to an album. Totally forgettable.

I started out feeling rather optimistic about the album based on the first two tracks. Then the tempo slowed and I got a bit bored.

I've had so many of the British bands recently, and they all sound so similar it would be hard to tell the difference between them at this point. It's almost as if I died, when to Hell, and am being forced to listen to this for the rest of my days. As for this album, it is okay. Nothing about it is special and the people who voted for this as one of "The 300 Best Albums in the Past 30 years" all must have some nostalgia attached to it. I have those bands I listen to all the time and love(The Appleseed Cast), but no way would I suggest it be on a list of albums to listen to before you die.

I have never heard of or listened to this album or band, somehow they completely escaped my attention in the 90s. It'd decent This reminds me of the "Life is Strange" soundtrack, which I loved. It does kinda get stale after a bit, though. 3/5

01) Seagull - 7,5 02) Kaleidoscope - 7,5 03) In a Different Place - 7,5 04) Polar Bear - 7,0 05) Dreams Burn Down - 7,0 06) Decay - 7,0 07) Paralysed - 7,0 08) Vapour Trail -7,5 09) Taste - 7,5 10) Here and Now - 7,0 11) Nowhere - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,18 (72/100) First of all, what the hell is Shoegaze? Never heard of that genre of music... So, Wikipedia says that shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. It's not a bad album. Maybe with a few more listens it would grow on me, but for now, it's just ok...

The songs are OK. Basically psychedelic rock with a lot of distortion. Great background music, but it's all one big blur. Nothing stands out. The producer must have had some serious hearing damage, because the production is very shrill. Way too much of those disco dip frequencies that you lose first. Favorite song: doesn't matter much, it's one big blur.

Shoegaze rock!!!

Vapour Trail

Noisy. Cool. I liked it OK, but not enough to seek out more.

I read the reviews and they made my heart sink. Not another wall of shoegaze industrial noise please. I've already given MBV 2 stars. However on a listen this was a much more palatable listen. The balance between scuzz and genuinely tuneful guitars was surprising and it fitted into a spectrum of music that I co in let enjoy, albeit at the darker end.

Psychedelicish grunge punky

Strange I missed these guys entirely at the time. Not bad but I guess you needed to be in the crowd. It's not unpleasant and maybe repeat listens might endear me to it but how many albums can you say the same about?

Not sure how I feel about it. Seems like a mashup of Smiths, Oasis grunge. Its almost like they dont even know what style of music they are which is good and bad!

Indie tranquilo, melódico. Las últimas canciones me gustaron más. No conocía el grupo. Escucharé más de ellos.

New band to me. Reminded me a little of REM. I still have no idea what shoegazing is.

Album sounds ahead of it's time, like a folkie Manchester Orchestra with U2 elements, then add the grunge edge. While I love the sound of the band, the album has about twice as many songs as it should. The vocal melodies are generally drony and monotonous. While I like the Fleet Foxes style lyrics, there's just too much similarity and sameness to the songs, lacking much sonic interest. The good that's here is really good though.

Very different than what I heard before, the shoegaze genre looks fun

Upon learning that this was “shoegaze”, I thought I’d hate it, but it ended up being fine. It bridges the gap between the post-punk sounds of the 80s and the grunge sounds of the 90s. I’m not a fan of either of those genres, so it ends up being pretty meh.

Never heard of it. Enjoyed but won’t go back. Thanks for the lift.

Liked the sound but I was a little checked out and bored by midway

Wishy washy….but ok.

some of the songs were enjoyable, others had too much repetitive instrumental music

Shoegaze central... Its all a bit murky and muddy and just doesn't hit like Loveless. Could do with better production. 3

Not my style but can appreciate it for what it is.

shoegaze. uk bias. lots of brit sad artists. it was my 730 albums. 6/10

I want to give it four stars but for real its pretty boring, took me a long time to get thru this album, some great tracks on it, but overall didnt hook me.

Still have no idea what shoegaze is but I like this better than others I’ve heard from the genre. The first two songs in particular were interesting. The album wore on me though

Good music but very forgettable. It’s ridiculously long

I'm not sure what this is supposed to be, but it doesn't really stand out as being much. It's an okay album, but nothing to write home about. I can listen to it if I had to, but it's wouldn't be my first choice.

Decent

Average good imo

A few decent tracks. I used to love this album but just not feeling it as much anymore. Not sure what’s changed in me to not rate it as much.

First song, Seagulls, was not what I was expecting. I felt a 60's vibe, with an updated sound. I think I can like this.

Pretty decent! Sometime could be a bit too noisy for my taste, but the more delicate songs and melodies are pretty sweet. 6/10

Grunge-y 90s rock. Sounds like it could have been in the soundtrack to something like Cruel Intentions. Perfectly good but nothing that struck me too much. 3.5

I found this to be a bit of a slog overall, its just so mediocre. In about the final third I did think it started to come together a bit more, so if you're reading this review while listening and are struggling - hang in there, kitty.

Never heard of these guys but enjoyed about half of the album. Definitely Brit rock from the late 80s-early 90s. Took me back to that era. Would spin as background music at a party to see if anyone I know recognized it.

Sounds like a poppier version of My Bloody Valentine. Not a bad album at all but I don't see why critics were so excited about this one.

This is pretty good. Interesting blend of styles. 3 stars.

I liked the sound. It was interesting. I think I’d like to revisit when I’m in a more gazey mood

So damn boring, but surprisingly contains a couple of very very good songs, so it gets its 3/5

More energetic than I expected with kind of a Stone Roses feel coming especially from the bass and the bright shimmery melodic lead guitar lines. But it isn't as as poppy and does a lot more of the drone shoegaze thing: big washy sounds, lots of delay/reverb on the guitar, vocals are kind of flat and buried in the echo. It seems like they do a lot of things well all at once that other bands took a lot further to be more distinctive - slowdive with the slow contemplative thing, my bloody Valentine the dense intense thing, spiritualized the orchestral psychedelic thing, the verve the pop adjacent accessible indie thing, radiohead the textural anxious tension thing. Favorites: nowhere, sennen, kaleidescope

Going to see this lot next month. Didn't expect that they would be on the reunion list. Enjoyed the album enough but nothing as 'blow you away' as JAMC. Maybe I'll revisit this after the show.

Solid album. Was like Oasis, but better.

Being a member of the commonwealth apparently doesn't help bring this past average, or invoke a deeper understanding of the mania. Maybe Damon Albarn can explain it to me.

Never heard of this band or album but didn’t hate it.

A decent album

Uma sequência de shoegaze agradável.

Alright, kinda like other "wall of sound" bands better, listen to MBV or something isntead

Expected to love this and just didn't

Shoegazing. Brett. Stämningsfullt snarare än välkomponerat.

Stone Roses meets Fr. Stone!

Very average shoegazy album. It wasn't impressive from a view of non-genre specific ear, but even compared to other position on this list playing shoegaze it was just uneventful. It didn't stand out for better or worse, there was nothing to pick up in the review. Bit of a waste of time.

I did enjoy this album, but I probably won't listen to it again. 3.5/5

A bit of a dirge and at times sounding like drums, guitar, vocals were in different recordings but interesting with it.

I sort of fell in the middle. I think I'd enjoy the odd track here and there but a whole album started sounding really samey quite quickly.

I like it

Was morning drive time listening. Decent but feel I would like it better for night drive

Original, classic shoegaze sound. Easy sound to listen to, but can get a little sleepy at times.

I enjoyed it. Sort of Jesus & Mary Chain without the grunt. I loved the guitars. Not so much the vocals.

longo demais

Good! Sounds like the cover looks 3.9

A great 90s vibe. Not sure what makes it a top album. But thanks for the nostalgic feels!

Average.

I had some pretty high hopes for this starting out, but quickly realized it wasn’t really for me. It felt like a Britpop band doing their best take on shoegaze and became monotonous after a few songs. It’s not bad, but there is so much better stuff to come from the early 90s.

Nowhere is the debut album by British shoegaze band Ride. Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock known for its beautiful mixture of hushed vocals, distortion, feedback, & echo guitar effects, plus overwhelming volume. Nowhere was the band's first full album after various LP's were released. Their indie music is relaxing and some of the best from the 90's. Nowhere is a phenomenal album, critically acclaimed, and considered one of the best in the Shoegaze genre. I enjoyed the calming nature of this album and found most tracks to be near-masterpieces. If you like indie music, then this is an album to listen to!

3.5/5. I don’t think I’m hipster enough to give it a ridiculously high rating. Still nice though, love me some shoegaze.

3.5, rounding down because it doesn't belong with most 4s. "Vapour Trail" is great. The other songs are good, but not great.

Well done album, but nothing really stood out as exceptional. Another unnecessarily long album.

My first reaction to this is "instantly forgettable." I didn't dislike it, though there was something not quite alluring in the vocal harmonies. Each song washed through the speakers with more or less the same intensity, blending together and making for a pleasant enough backdrop but never earning attention.

I liked!

6/10. Sometimes there's just not much to say. This was fine.

I like shoegaze generally, and something about this album is gnawing at me in a way that makes me want to rate it higher. I just can't get past how bored I felt for most of its runtime. Also, it seems like Souvlaki would have been a better pick for the list than either this or the non-Loveless mbv albums. 6/10

a perfectly fine rock album, but nothing particularly special. better than average, but not by much.

Shoegaze very much passed me by, though I love The Cure and The Cocteau Twins who were both big influences. I think there's a reason it was never much of a movement and didn't have many successful bands which is that it's not very interesting. Take the songs, take the life out of them and make them so muddy and covered in distortion that you can only take so much. That said Ride have a great song closing this album - Vapour Trail - and a great single in Taste which is added to the extended version. The rest is all a mood and a sound and not a set of songs. I like it, but it's not going to take hold of the conscience. And it didn't.

I had to google shoegaze to figure out what it meant and decided it’s a stupid name for a music genre. Dream pop is better and certainly fits this sound. And while it didn’t blow me away as one of the best things I’ve ever heard, I did enjoy it quite a lot. Which is saying something because I hate giving British people credit for anything

Very cool album. Some very good songs, but none of them have a stick in your mind quality which makes me downgrade it 1/2 a star. The opener, Seagull, is a very dramatic start. I am sure that more listens will reveal new subtleties and it may regain that 1/2 star. The question is will I listen more? For now.... 3.5

It’s basically sonic youth background noise, like I could zone out to this but wouldn’t say “hey look at this awesome song!”

Quite enjoyed this one. Another new album for me from the 1001. 3.5 stars.

Loved this when it came out, Ride were great live. Haven't really listened to it since, not really likely to again if Im honest.

I am told this is quintessential shoegaze. Not really my sort of thing, but had a good read up about Ride, Andy Bell, Creation Records and Oasis, etc; interesting how shoegaze paving the way for Britpop. 2.5

3.8 - Perhaps the brighter, poppier cousin of My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless." A few of the cuts off this record can compete, particularly "Dreams Burn Down" and "Decay." The rest is a consistently colorful swirl of blown out guitars.

Nowhere, kind of like where this album takes you. It isn't bad. I've heard this album a few times. It does get better with each listen and there are a couple of better than the rest kind of songs... Overall 3/5

Again with the 90s Britpop. On a base level, I liked this album okay. Most of the songs had a lot of soaring, dreamy instrumental moments along with juxtaposing moments of instrumental chaos. Personally, I did like that sound, even if it did at times feel a bit repetitive across the album. One thing I will acknowledge is that this came out in 1990, which is one of the earliest examples I can think of where this particular Britpop/90s alt rock sound is in play; I would have definitely guessed this album to be a few years older. Maybe for that reason, this album deserves a place on this project. At the end of the day, I think the sounds that this band dabbles in on this album ultimately ended up being used more and better by other bands during the decade, likely resulting in this band falling into some degree of obscurity. I liked this okay, but it started to drag for me the more it went on. A very average, middle-of-the-road 3 for me.

Sometimes this falls into the classic shoegaze trap of not actually sounding particularly heavy, or dreamy, or psychedelic (or whatever else shoegaze is supposed to sound like) - all the parts just combine into a watery sludge instead. The wishy-washy Ian Brown style vocals don’t help with that. It does hit the mark at other times though, when there’s a more well-defined tune to latch onto. I can understand the appeal.

Grunge rock with some indie influence (like Cocteau Twins)

This is my first listen to "shoegaze" music. Nice vocal-harmonies throughout. "Vapour Trail" was my favorite track. Two of the CD bonus tracks - "Taste" and "Here and Now" - are good.

The album is alright. A little more pop oriented radio friendly album than the other albums from the "holy trinity" of shoegaze. The reason why I love this genre is the rich soundscapes which are a little lacking here hence I'm not as much of a fan. Also the vocals were pretty meh and those are pretty important for a shoegaze record.

The band reminded me a lot of Radiohead's first album. My big thing about shoegaze is that the singers always sound like they're half-asleep. The contrast in the wall of sound music and the singer singing so drowsily... I thought the drummer did a pretty good job, as well. Songs like "Here and Now" he didn't just keep the time, he was all over the place. But he was able to keep the beat going, you know? But pretty much each song didn't really stand out one from the other. I wasn't blown away by any one specific song. They started to blend together to me, and that's never good.

Sounds like quintessential shoegaze. I recognize the song Vapour Trail and I like it a lot; always have. I think I thought it was another band though (Catherine Wheel maybe?). If there was a best of shoegaze album (needn't be too long), this song should be near the top. The rest of the seven songs on the album are enjoyable if not forgettable. Seagull was a little too distortion-y but Kaleidoscope and Polar Bear were solid. Overall, the album is a nice listen as far as shoegaze goes. Perfectly average.

Ihan kelpo musaa mutta jotain koukkuja olisin ehkä kaivannut 3/5

Ok then

It's fine

3.0 The instrumentals were amazing, just absolute shoegaze perfection, sometimes I wasn't too keen on the singing. Overall not amazing but pretty decent Fave songs: Seagulls

It's quite a likeable album and starts strongly. I do think after a while the songs start merging into one another and it hasn't kept my attention for the duration

Not bad

Generic '90s rock, but it's decent. I liked a few tracks. Nothing to say, nowhere to Ride. Favorite tracks: Sennen, Kaleidoscope, Today. Album art: Open ocean, or is it? Do I detect a berm? Or is that a sandbar? I don't know oceanatomy. As far as covers go though, pretty boring. Suits the music. 3/5

I like shoegaze but this feels a little meh, a little rough.

Really enjoyed this shoegazer classic, instantly brought me back to the 90's and being stood on sticky floors just soaking up the atmosphere. Ride were the real precurser to a lot of 90's stuff that I loved the end result of, and you can hear all the things that influenced that through this.

Trippy to start, but boring overall.

Not bad but kind of forgettable...

Good exemplar of 90's shoegaze. It can feel a little tiresome, but i think this is mostly the fault of the bonus tracks, which bloat the album more than being an worthy addition. Also, i almost always hate "expanded" editions.

This was not bad. Better than I was expecting.

This did not work for me. Apparently this is a seminal work in the Shoegaze genre. No thanks.

Not bad, bit britpop and indie. Reminded me of charlatans in places bit heavier. No stand out tracks but good overall

Good, but not great.

It's like a preview of what the 90s would be

Not the best shoegaze, but did like it

Just like a shoegaze group to sneak up on you with an explosion of clashing guitar colour, plaintive lyrics, and anonymity. Never heard of them, but I’m pleased to finally meet them.

It was good but not that fulfilling to me

I imagine in the right context I'd enjoy it more, but having listened to a few times now, it's failed to excite.

One of those groups I’d heard of but never listened to. I was liking this but it it is too long and a little repetitive. Still, clearly an influential band. I can especially see the line from them to a group like the feelies.

Mmidnfjfidn. So mid

The vocals definitely take a backseat to the instrumentals here, and after listening to most of the album I'm left wondering: do the vocals even really make that much of a difference? It's a weird mash up of rock/metal with crooning. I kinda like it, but I dunno if I could listen to it on repeat much.

A little too overproduced for me. Everything feels like it has a layer of smudge on it. This hides the songs. I’d listen to it again but not sure if I would listen to the full album. 70/100 3/5

Was aware of Ride, but hadn't listened to them prior. This genre appeals to me generally, however I'm not sure I'll revisit this particular album

Overall decent, songs ran long but the guitars were good

a very cute post-punk moment. doesn’t do anything better than contemporaries, but understands its medium and performs well within it. probably would listen again

Pretty cool instrumentals and album cover. Do not love the vocals though.

Not my bloody valentine

Liked Vapour trail

Honestly it was good background noise but nothing else. I don’t have any complaints but it didn’t wow me. It was peaceful and it was nice to listen to though!

I've always been somewhat lukewarm to the shoegaze and emo bands - rarely do I dislike them, but it's hard to describe - it's almost like even when bands like Ride were new/fresh in the early 90s they already all had a sameness to them. Not necessarily bad, but so much of the music truly became interchangeable to me. In a parallel way to the 80s I can probably pinpoint the release date/s of albums like this within a year. Bringing it back to this album by Ride - I've listened to it from time to time and always enjoyed it a bit but if someone put it on by surprise would I be able to identify this as Ride as opposed to one of a handful of brief shining star bands like Mystery Machine? Maybe that's ok - because this album really is almost a soundscape; a mood. Vocals mixed very low and a likely-intentional lack of clarity and high-end both in said vocals and overall give it that almost-muddy cape of sound that just overtakes you as you listen. So AGAIN like similar albums this isn't one I can say "oh these ~3 songs are my favourites" - it's more a "put on the entire album"* listen and pretend like I'm in college again. 6/10 3 stars *"the entire album" meaning the original 8 tracks; extended versions are often just too much.

I wish this was Nowhere on the list!!!!!!! Shoegaze not my thing but I zoned out at work and got through it

When I saw that this album was shoegaze, I got excited. But I was kind of disappointed when I was listening to it. Nothing really stuck out to me, and I didn't get the same feeling I get from other shoegaze albums on this list. It's not bad, but not what I was hoping for. My favourite song was probably Paralyzed.

Very solid album, brings a little dimension to the shoegaze sound. It felt kind of like The Cure doing an impression of mbv. Songs weren't super memorable but there were moments, mostly when the drums would build or deviate from the established tempo.

Feels like an album from a bygone era. Not that bad but just meh

This is great. Kind of like Smiths meet Coldplay and The Cure.

New computer. Lost my notes. Can't remember what I thought about which song. Generally I liked this.

"Nowhere" continuously sounds like Ride was trying to make music of a kind that I would really dig. But try as they might, it was never quite right. It's hard to place exactly what was missing, but let's begin with the totally unspectacular vocals. So unspectacular, that as they droned on and on, never grabbing me or making me pay extra attention to a song, I would have never been able to guess that Ride utilized two lead singers. It took two guys to bore me that much? The bland singing was accompanied by guitar and drum work that never quite broke free and soared the way it needed to. They just kept chugging along, flat and even, which showed off some skill but hardly inspired any emotion. Maybe those are all just hallmarks of shoegaze, a hard-to-pin-down genre that apparently this album was emblematic of.

I generally liked it, it needed something more special to really get it over the hump to a 4. Nothing to complain about but nothing to get excited about either.

Definitely "wall of sound", but not too heavy. I like the atospheric, echoey feel

Decent shoegaze but there are significantly better albums in the genre. The highlights for me were "In a Different Place", "Polar Bear", "Decay", and "Vapour Trail" the last of those being the only one I knew before today. Good album but just not super special to me.

Saw shoegaze and dreaded this, overall wasn't too bad though and kinda got into at times.

Pretty forgettable to be honest, but also inoffensive.

Interesting combo of big fuzzy guitars and 60s style song writing and drum playing. Will give another listen in the future for sure.

interesting. 3.5/5

not bad at all, i'd say 3.5

I THINK it’s really good, an interesting spin on the early shoegaze craft. Will need to listen with better headphones though

Indieful

I wasn't into Ride at the time. Always found it too thin and trebly, not enough bottom end. Lightweight and just not that interesting. Bought this plus the EPs for between 50p and a UKP1 in the Oxfam near where I used to work (plus Doolittte and the first Stone Roses album for about the same amount of money) but it still didn't do much for me. Got media pass last time they played here and enjoyed it. Much better live than on album. See they're back to play this album in full at the end of the year. Will probably look to go and photograph again, even though it's an ok but not amazing album.

Buzzy but somehow pedestrian.

I don't where to place myself on this... The listening was OK (a bit long) but some tracks made me move my head. Did not like any song in particular and Juste went through it... Very small 3/5

I started out hating this one, with the flat, droning vocals and uninspiring sound. Enjoyed it a bit more towards the end, not sure if the tracks got better or it just grew on me. It's still a bit mediocre and not super memorable.

This was upbeat enough to keep me entertained but it doesnt do much for me. Vapor Trail is a good track.

Yea a nice listen

Has a Meat Puppets vibe

Great debut.

I think this was very much of its time - listening now, I'm not overly impressed.

Indie tranquilo, melódico. Las últimas canciones me gustaron más. No conocía el grupo. Escucharé más de ellos.

Still a bit too much treble for this Rona ravaged headache zone of a brain I'm currently sporting.

Feels like hearing some of the soothing birth gurgles of Britpop. And there's even a future Oasis member singing lead!

I had never heard of Ride, but this was pretty good.

sounds like early chumbawumba.

I guess I missed these guys when they were current, but it's decent.

Man, I liked some other shoegaze albums and thought I'd dig this too after reading it was a quintessential album to the genre, but it's a real whiff for me. Not bad, just much less than expected. || It helped me solidify the opinion that shoegaze is just a lamer, British version of early American emo.

Never heard of this band. Not great but a nice surprise

bit forgettable. sorry.

Mostly blah, but a few outstanding tracks.

This was fine, and had some nice guitar parts but was not really my taste. I don’t love low fi sounding music in general as I love to hear all of the instruments and I feel like we lost that with the way it was mixed. Since this is shoegaze music that was certainly intentional.

Ihan ok progerockpläjäys

It's definitely shoegaze. Very Verve-y, but without as much swagger. I thought the vocals let it down a bit

It's not bad. Had I found this in my teens or early twenties perhaps it could have been an album I remembered with fondness. Now it will probably be forgotten in a week.

This is another band on this list I've never heard of before listening, I was pleasantly surprised. A really good album full of some awesome tunes. 3.5/5

This was cool, I liked Vapour Trail and Polar Bear. Didn't strike me as anything special tho

This is a really confident debut and it's influence on that iconic floaty shoegaze sound is massive. It's a bit rough around the edges, with the vocals being a bit underwhelming, and doesn't reach the heights of Going Blank Again However, when you let the sound of it immerse you it's really impressive. And while the reverb-heavy swells are used to great effect throughout, the most impactful song for me was Dreams Burn Down with sudden bursts of volume punctuating the structure and contrasting with the more dreamlike softer textures

A little shoegazey VERY ‘90s indie. This is a good not great entry into that genre. No real “single” hurts this a bit.

This album would have been quite enjoyable were it not for the vocals. Parts of it were downright hard to listen to because it reminded me of stepping on a cat. Shame because some of the melodies and arrangements were great.

Was not a big fan of this. It’s pretty droned out and all the songs sound pretty similar. However, it was not unbearable.

Easy to listen to, but nothing really stood out.

What do you do when you're a Britpop band in the early 90s with two singers that can't really carry a tune all that well? You bury them in the mix, turn up the guitars, and ride the wave (sorry) of the burgeoning shoegaze movement. A few triumphant moments, but they're a little too sparse. Best track: Vapour Trails

Good sounds

Much better than I had expected.

Another band that's been under my radar and they sound kinda like what I expected. Nothing special, but an enjoyable listen and I should listen to more of their stuff.

I bought this record on vinyl when it was reissued in 2010ish. Because everyone said it was a great shoegaze record. Ok. It's ok. Ride isn't my favorite shoegaze band and I think "Nowhere" is just fine. I mean, I'm never gonna tell a band to use less noise and less guitar pedals. I'm glad I'm listening again because I haven't listened to this record since I bought the reissue. If you asked me to rate before re-listening, I would have given this a weak 2. Now I'm giving it a weak 3. There is better shoegaze and I hope its on this list because I want to talk about My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins. Like, real bad.

Really liked this one. I've never heard of Ride, but they are right up my musical alley. It's 90s rock/pop, but still pretty indy rock - not too commercial sounding. I like that. At times I heard some Toad the Wet Sprocket in there (although I'm sure that's not what they were going for). Really good. My gut says this is a 4, but I'm wondering if it's just the newness. I reserve the right to amend my rating upon subsequent listens.

Pretty good alt-rock-shoegaze. Vapour Trail is an amazing song. 6/10

Not amazing, not rubbish. Just kinda.. there. Almost the definitive 3 outta 5.

This album was mostly noisy with mushy vocals. Luckily, the music itself, while noisy, was pretty good if you like post-punk/neo-psychedelia stuff. I'm inclined to give it a weak 3 stars.

Rating: 6/10

That is some jangly guitar

cool album!

Omg så epic cover??? Kan denna få en oscar!! Jag ->👊 död häst

Decent shoegaze aside from the excellent closer.

I am secret shoegaze fan so was looking forward to this when it popped up this morning. It wasn't as good as My bloody Valentine or Slowdive but was decent enough. 3/5

Some of the songs make me feel Ill. Have to be in the right place at the right time. Vapour Trail is timeless tho.

meh, kind of ok to work to too though. NOthing special

Aighto. If Radiohead and Neutral milk hotel had a child

Like me, this hasn't aged well

I think this is going to be much more my type of thing! Although perhaps not perhaps stretching my taste much beyond 90s indie! - I don't know this album, but I know later ride albums a bit. Looking forward to it. Seagull - not as melodic as I expected. Maybe a bit too much going on, musically. Kaleidoscope - the youtube version seems a bit muted. But nice. Better with the volume up a bit higher! In a different place - love the start. rest is fine! Nothing special - so shoegazey it drifts past a bit Polar bear. like intro again . Gets a bit same-y. Dreams burn down - passed me by a bit. Decay - don't like the singing as much, and a bit sub-Joy Division. Paralysed - stats off nice and noodly. Generally nice feel to it - just slightly more up-beat. I think I just like this singer's voice (Bell ratehr than Gardener apparently). Vapour Trail - apparently this is the single. Jangly - quite like it, but still not love. other trakcs were 'bonus' on various formats (CD and re-issue). Only half-listened to these.

Mmmm it's not a 4, it's not a 2. I could listen to this while laying in the floor doing nothing. Although it can get repetitive.

When I saw "Shoegaze" I was a bit concerned, but it beat my expectations. I enjoy the "dreamy" vocal style.

Not an album that thrilled me - admired rather than enjoyed. There is a repetitiveness to the music and it’s pretty downbeat.

sufer rock stoner rock

Pretty simple

What a beginning to an album. A little weird turned into almost grunge. Reminds me a bit of Nirvana, but not completely. I think I would have loved this album had I heard it in middle or high school. MAYBE even college. Just about done with the album now. It was good but nothing super special. Kind of run of the mill soft-ish rock album from the 90s. Rating a 3.

Really conflicted about this was. Sounds really special in parts, much of it is very good. But then it is very samey all the way through and god he’s voice is dreadful. A 4 would suggest I love it. A 2 would suggest I’ll never revisit but it was just interesting enough to make me want to go back. So I’ll have to go 3/5

Not as noisy and unfocused as MBV. I can see the progression towards Leave Them All Behind and Twisterella. OK, probably prefer early Verve for this type of textured music.

Starts off quite promising but then just becomes a bit wishy washy. Best track: Seagull

Polar bear was zelfs oprecht goed. Ideaal voor tijdens het werken.

Good for listening whilst working. No big wow effect but agreeable

Kind of inoffensive 90s stuff but a bit dull on the whole

Generous 3

Memories of my teenage college days. Some real classics on this but a couple don't sound so good this far removed from the shoegaze heyday.

Liked it, and probably would have loved it if I’d heard it when I was a teenager, but right now I struggle to listen to a quite same-y album for an hour. A shame.

good but nothing special

Whoa! Stone Roses 2.0. Or was it 1.0? I'd never heard of them before, but this is really good!

Another late 80’s/early 90’s soft rock album. Nothing super crazy

Confused by the genre. Enjoyed some tracks

Nice fuzzy noise-rock.

I liked this pretty well but like most of the so-called shoegaze genre it had a problem of slipping I to the background and no particular time or lyric ended up really standing out for me.

Raro.

pretty much essential 90's, not bad but nothing great either

punkish , ok nothing striking

3.5 stars pretty solid

Love the genre. Album is good and worth listening again.

Started cool but ended up sounding a bit repetitive. Definitely some gems though, cool unusual sound.

didn't finish, might listen more idk first song is great

A bit long winded and the lyrics are corny.... but the vibe and the feel are what make this album!!

Well, this might be the shoegazingiest shoegazing rock album I've ever heard. Turns out, too much is really too much.

Meh. Didn’t care for it. Too long and nothing stood out.

If only they werent British 😪 Like the cranberries but no good riffs and replace the good woman singer with the mid dude singer.

Here’s another obscure British band, with an album titled “Nowhere”. The internet claims they are a famous shoegaze band, which I now know involves ethereal background and distorted guitars. The album title says it all for me. Nothing memorable.

Now,here's a boring album. Shoegaze is definitely in competition (with Prog and Blues rock) for my least favorite genre. Are there even vocals? Who can tell over all this tedious guitar.

It’s just noise really

A little mid. Not my favorite

Fine but pretty dull.

mediocre at best

Time and place for this, just now here and not now

Not a huge fan

2. Didn't do anything for me

boring af

hoooonk shooooo

Just okay.

Forgettable

An extraordinary series of events kept interrupting my attempt to listen to this album: fatigue, phone calls, my phone died, etc. It was when I thought I had finally powered through two-thirds of the record, and discovered I was only on track three, that I understood: the universe doesn’t want me to hear this album, the title is perfectly apt, and I just need to move on.

S'alright. Not much else to say, honestly. It's music.

Just sounds like noise, not in a good way

This sounded like a second-rate Stone Rosrs

Mostly this album just faded into the background and I would occasionally say oh yeah, music is playing.

Not my cup of tea
