Reviews (page 7 of 8)

It's interesting that this novelty album would make it onto this list because the drum break (s) got sampled so much. I first heard Apache on a Fatboy Slim DJ in the 90s. I subsequently Napstered it and used it for spinning classes. The rest of the LP I’m luke warm about – it’s okay to throw on in the background when you have guests over. The version of In-a-godda-divida is catchy and quite bearable compared to the original.

Fun, fun fun! Pretty kitsch. Super rhythms. Probably wouldn't listen to again, but enjoyed listening.

This seems a lot like a set of novelty covers, but it's slick enough to skate by. Turning it up reveals a lot of depth in the percussion parts, which I suppose should make sense based on name alone. The amount of organ is tastefully beneficial.

It’s got bongos alright. And it sure does rock. A very interesting record that I’m surprised I found as long ago as I did, and from a hip hop perspective a very historical one at that. Most of the songs are entertaining enough, and even in the Gadda da vida pulls out some stops.. but essential? Ehhhhh. Just listen to Apache, be amazed, and call it good. If you like funk and hip hop tho, this album is a verified surf-funk-rock beat farm.

Oh man samples galore. I sometimes listen to playlists that are all sources of hip hop samples. This seems to be a treasure trove. One helluva novelty record.

Some is kind of nice, but some of it is a bit meh. Feels like it could be nice for a TV show/movie soundtrack. I was wanting some vocals.

dig the bongos

Bongoriffic. Let's be honest, this record is all about the breaks which went on to fuel the entire hip-hop genre and then some, the most famous of which appears on 'Apache'. The rest of the album, while not necessarily essential unless you’re a beat maker or sampler is still fun and funky.

Ohhhh! It's the sample from "Jump on it!" And the history of sampling "Apache" and that beat's influence on early hip-hop, is pretty deep and interesting. It was cool to check out the doc "Sample This" on Netflix, not least because of the revelation that Gene Simmons has an amazing voice for documentary narration, but also to find out the fascinating connections the Incredible Bongo Band has to the RFK campaign and Charles Manson. So, neat, that gives it a kind of legacy and importance in music history. Other than that, this album is a lot of covers (including "Apache" - not originally theirs) and a lot of drums. Some good/interesting guitar work, a lot of sometimes good sometimes meh organ. But between the "Apache" sample, hearing a familiar tune and going "that sounds like... oh, yeah it's...," and looking down at the name of track 3 as it came on and laughing out loud that they named a song "Bongolia," this was enjoyable enough, if not something I'd seek out again.

Hey, I recognize that riff! And that one! There’s a lot of fun to be had with this album. The rhythms are infectious, the music is brassy & fun. I’d probably rather hear this version of In a Gadda da Vida than the original, and I loved the take on Sing Sing Sing. Some of the other covers (Satisfaction & Wipeout, particularly) were somewhat anemic. I expected the solos in Wipeout to blow me away, but instead they were somewhat pedestrian compared to the more energized tracks. As a whole, the album is a bit of a lark, but I ain’t mad at it one bit.

Upbeat and fun if not exactly original.

For some reason, Bongo Rock made me think of Fraggle Rock, a wonderful show from long ago with Jim Henson’s muppets. There were Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, and Silly Creatures. The Doozers build, mostly scaffolding out of ground up radishes. Why? Because “architecture is meant to be enjoyed.” By enjoyed, they mean eaten by the Fraggles because that’s what Fraggles spend a lot of time doing. The Gorgs are the farmers and don’t like their radishes being taken. The Silly Creatures are humans. Henson described the Fraggle Rock series as "a high-energy, raucous musical romp. It's a lot of silliness. It's wonderful." That pretty much sums up my take on Bongo Rock, except I liked Fraggle Rock more. I liked the fresh approach on this album and I’d listen to this album again, but I would not seek it out myself.

I mean, it's a head-bobbing, bongo-rich album of instrumental dance tracks. It does what it says on the tin. Apache is notable for being extremely heavily sampled in hip-hop.

Not bad and quite interesting.

Now I know where all the Beastie Boys got all those samples from.

surprisingly catchy

Apache is a cool track, but besides this not my favorite kind. More like OST music.

One of those albums where I acknowledge musicianship but not my thing.

So... maybe too much bongo?

I found myself enjoying bits, but soon realized I was also smiling at how bad I found it.

Wow! That's a lot of bongos! Some really cool things going on here, but more of the same and then more of the same and then more of the same and then more of the same. Really interesting to realize how much of this I've heard before as it's been sampled a million times in a million other songs.

Today's adventure in the 1001 albums generator is The Incredible Bongo Band. Now, this is on me. I like to go into these albums cold, generally without reading any information on them. To be honest, I glanced down at my phone to queue this album as I was walking to my car. I actually thought it said Oingo Boingo. I was somewhat surprised when I started my car and got an instrucmental version of Apache. And the album "Bongo Rock"...I mean, it's pretty much what it says on the tin. It's an album of bongo heavy rock. At some point, what level of insanity does a person slide into when tasked to write a book of one thousand albums that are required listening? It's impossible not to have your biases shine through. All of the early 80s English synth-pop. There's six Rolling Stones records, another five from Bruce Springsteen. Dylan has 7 albums recognized. There's NINE David Bowie records. NINE, Bob. Nine. Not for a list of Essential David Bowie records for hardcore David Bowie fans, but for a list of essential albums for EVERYONE to listen to before they die. Worse than over-represntation on this list is the under-representation. There's no Warren Zevon, Tool, Weezer, Deftones, Mountain Goats to name a few. In general, there is a lack of representation in metal, punk and alternative music. I begin to wonder why I took on this Sisyphean task of listening to these albums, and preparing reviews every day. What's the point of digging if it will be yet another Elvis Costello album? Or some utter nonsense like Captain Beefheart?? Anyway, this album is...fine. It has bongos and shit.

just some instrumental rock with bongos which does not make it any more interesting than it sounds unfortunately 5/10 Favourite: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Least Favourite: Bongo Rock '73

Un disco alegre, pero poco enganche. No me gustó mucho.

While the concept behind the Incredible Bongo Band’s Bongo Rock is highly intriguing, the lackluster recording quality ultimately makes it difficult to truly enjoy, earning it a 2/5. The tracklist is a mixed bag, starting strong with the nice groove of "Apache" and the intriguing, concert-ready dialogue between percussion instruments on "Duelling Bongos." Furthermore, the familiar sounds of "In a Gadda da Vida" prompt curiosity about its famous interpolations. However, the rest of the album fails to hold up; tracks like "Let There Be Drums" and "Bongolia" feel thoroughly meh, "Last Bongo in Belgium" is merely okay, and "Raunchy 73" fails to land altogether. By the time you reach the title track, "Bongo Rock," the chords have become entirely too repetitive, sealing the album's fate as a great idea marred by poor execution.

Well this is different, in a good way

As a percussionist myself, I really appreciated all this bongo and it was also a very nice background music for studying. But that’s the keyword - background. I prefer music that has a narrative, or at least some versitality and as such, this album for me was a bit underwhelming. I can see how maybe someone would sample this for another something, but I have heard far more interesting beat/transative/tribal music than this.

Very fun!

I got a fever, and the only prescription is MORE BONGOS. 2 stars

Kinda fun.

Not for me.

Donkey Kong’s Jamboree minigame in album form

not enough bongos

The only thing that I found interesting about this was I noticed where a lot of hip hop samples have come from, but other than that this is just a normal album.

Surprising album. Starts with Apache, very well made song. But after that the album flattens out, there is no more power left, it simply gets boring.

Bongos 👍

Entretenido

Not enough bongo honestly

I was expecting cool bongo music, not a bunch of shitty covers of other songs already on this list. Wildly uninspired, and honestly not even that much bongo. Live or die by your bongos, don’t be a half assed neutral.

There is absolutely good percussion here, but the music was so cheesy I wondered if this was a joke.

Nice enough at first listen, but ultimately meaningless and empty.

Just another weird one to cover all the author’s bases for making a comprehensive album list.

These weird cover albums are a drag.

This was a fun one that I have never heard before but it drifted into gimmicky after a while.

Good instrumentals

I know there were some really good albums produced in the 1970’s. This is not one of them.

Its bongos/5

This was bongos. Also trumpets not bad but unsure on why this was part of the 1001 albums

+1 star for the album's importance to modern music in general, however I don't need to listen to an album full of backing tracks/sampled music before I die

Fun enough, I guess!

A parte rítmica é boa.

Shaft-Soundtrack much. Just No. Sorry, still not losing this Shaft-Vibes.

A gimmicky covers record. It’s really not worthy of inclusion, I don’t care how well played and often sampled it is.

Greatly influential for sample based music, i see why it was used to cut so many tracks. Overall it gets pretty repetitive, fun, but definetly made to be listened to once, take the best tracks and move on from it.

Skilled but meh. Instrumentals 2

Yep those are bongos.

Better than tubular bells

It's a collection of instrumentals that's most notable for it's use in samples in other music. You'll recognize the "DUH! ... DUH! DUH! DUH!" from "Apache" the moment you hear it. As an album listening experience, it's not the worst thing, but if you derive any enjoyment from all the bongos and horns, and the high school marching band quality of In A Gadda Da Vida, well... good! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

2 out of 5 There were so many funny covers and others that made you wanted to get up and dance around the big fire. But there were a lot and it got very repitive.

I think this is a 2 for me. I think the bongos are cool and impressive just not for me though.

4/10, so idk wny is this album even here, but i think its good for samples, maybe

As someone else said, I like bongos but not that much lol

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more BONGOS

Amusing and relatively easy to listen to, but even though it's a short album it's feels much too long and the bongos are quite repetitive and start to grate at some point

Easy on the ears and maintains a toe tapping beat throughout.

Shouldn’t be on the list.

Never trust a bongo player

Lively rhythms that made me think of the intro theme for 70's buddy-cop shows. Can't say I needed instrumental covers of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Satisfaction, Wipeout, and more, though.

I understand why this is on the list, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

Marching bands would have fun with many of these tracks. Not totally sure why an album of covers on bongo would be on this list, beyond the Apache breakbeat. But here it is.

The drumming is quite skilled but all the songs kinda sound the same to me. I was tired of it by the end (I say this as if I made it to the end, I did not). Liked some of the covers (Wipeout) but like the original better…

Okay bongo rock, I see your game. I’m beep bopping along happy as a clam. The Jump On It sample or whatever happened in the first song made me excited for the rest of the album I’m so sorry, I’m exhausted by the bongos. After four songs I was questioning my life decisions, they all sounded the same after the first song and not super in greatest way Happy to have tried bongo rock, onto the next

Not for me.

I mean, it's quite an interesting idea. But dated and it wears thin quite quickly.

This was ok. Just bongo music… probably wouldn’t recommend.

Bongos are kinda cool

It has some really bongo-rific tracks, but I don’t know when I’d ever listen to this again. Not enough in there for me to sit down and listen to it, too energetic to have on in the background, too dated to throw on at a party. Most of its appeal to me is how recognisable its beats are after being sampled in hip-hop so often. Great musicianship, but it just sounds like the chase music for movies it was designed to be. Probably 2.5 stars.

1st song. Nice bongos. 2nd song. Ah bongos are kinda cool. 3rd song. More bongos???? 4th song. What more bongos????!!!!???? 5th song Please no more, I never want to hear a bongo again!!!!!

That was not too bad

TMB Too many bongos

Interesting from a samples point of view, a bit torturous as a whole album listen, 2.5 ⭐⭐

I honestly thought it was going to be more bongo centred but relieved that it wasn’t. Fine music in the background whilst cooking but I’d hate to have listened with my headphones on.

Listen…bongos are great. What an important percussive instrument. But a whole album of bongo music? Rock on, but it’s not getting a rave from moi.

I immediately recognized the first few notes of “Apache” from Grandmaster Flash. I love when I don’t recognize an album, but connect the dots from other parts of music history. On top of that this is just an insanely fun album.

Ihan ok, ei säväytä. 2,25/5.

it's really all bongos

Wrongo

The incredible bongo band actually seems to be a serviceable covers band you might found in a lounge bar with some added bongos. I did like dueling bongos, the only bit that really showcased their bongo talent. The rest of it was just the sort of jazzy pop with an extra bongo beat that weirdly gave it the feeling of a never ending heist explanation. Were there a lot of bongos in oceans eleven? Its very specific and I do like these sort of niche turns from the list but it's anything but essential.

I like bongos, but not this much.

Cheesy AF. How do you make Wipeout boring?? An hour of percussion does not an album make.

I am expecting lots of bongo from the Incredible bongo band!! Bongo Rock sounds incredible, the horns are loud, there is a lot of bongoing for sure and bongo solos and their are some great guitar riffs ontop. This is a very cool album. Bongo Rock really is a 70s sound and sums up the vibe of that time but it can get a bit tiresome as it has vary little variation throughout and its a long listen. Favourite track: Apache and Bongolia were brilliant songs Least favourite track: After time the labum begins to drap and feel very repitiative. it could do with losing 4-5 of the last tracks. Album artwork: More bongos

Only listen if you want funky bongo fever dreams

Interesting, but not sure it was really interesting in a good way?

Wikipedia states that the Incredible Bongo Band's "output consisted of upbeat, funky, instrumental music". What it does not mention is that this music is randomly interrupted by ridiculously monotonous and repetitive bongo, conga, whatever drum parts. That's a real shame, because the overly simple and undynamic drum sections detract from the professional impression made by the songs, which are actually good and carefully arranged. Sure, it was a contemporary experiment in the early 1970s, but from today's perspective, it was a failed one. What a pity!

Dueling Bongos was neat, but man, who can muster up the steam for an hour+ of this? Ill tell ya who… Matthew McConaughey bONNgoos man… GET IT. YEEEWHOO

DNF soz

This wasn’t bad, it was quite well done, but it was incredibly gimmicky and I don’t know if I really needed to hear a bunch of cover songs featuring a lot of bongos before I died.

Remember 1970 UK 'variety' shows. "It's Cliff Richard" or "Lulu" or "Summertime Special"? About half way through there would be some troupe of clean cut dancers doing a very 70's routine to some Norrie Paramor or Ronnie Hazlehurst orchestration. Well this is appears to be the soundtrack.

at least it was short?

But there’s also horns! This album could’ve been a medley. I’m feeling generous today

La música llevada al circo. Ahora vendrá Claxon éxitos. Cómo número de circo tal vez impresione

They were really going crazy on those bongos. Favorite: dueling bongos

With this, I’ve decided to include an addendum for each album in the list from now on, asking the question: do you need to hear this before you die? After all, that’s what the list is about, right? It can’t come as a surprise that this, an album centred around one instrument, sparked the idea for this new clause. It really is just that. A slew of (honestly rather unimpressive) drum solos, occasionally broken by unimpressive guitar, and unimpressive saxophone. Apache has a section sampled famously by The Sugarhill Gang in their song of the same name, and, uh... there isn’t much else of note.

Pointless album.

okayy i expected bongos and i got bongos many bongos many many bongos the music is really chill and danceable i guess you could create some nice remixes with the tracks but all in all i don't really want to listen a whole album with just bongos in my freetime 😭

I usually take a 'why not?' attitude to weird, high-concept shit - especially where excessive percussive elements are involved. But as I listened to this inoffensive but dispensable album I confess I did find myself asking 'why?' - regarding both its conception and its inclusion on the list.

I get that this is an important album in the sense that it is highly sampled in rap/edm, but it's mostly just instrumental covers of rock songs with bongos and horns. I just ain't into it.

I'm shocked that this album rated as well (Globally) as it did! It was just a cheesy 'Hooked on Classics' (if you know, you know) but with bongos!. Who'd have thought!

I hate to use the word "gimmicky", since using one specific instrument prominently shouldn't be considered a gimmick, but man does this album feel gimmicky.. The cover of "Apache" at the beginning is pretty great but after that this album becomes very draining. I'm sorry I just don't care about bongos. Also the "Satisfaction" cover is pretty lame. Favorite track: Apache

A curio - some good grooves, and an interesting backdrop to early hip hop and the use of funky samples to build new grooves. But not essential listening - there are 4 Blue Note collections of hip hop roots that are far more interesting than this. (Blue Break Beats Volumes 1 to 4)

This made me laugh for some reason. But dueling bongos was great.

Xenos Ennio Morricone meets Safri Duo. Twee sterren.

Man this is a cool record that I have zero interest in. Like if I were making shitty beats this might be sick but I just can't. The fully instrumental path this is on is not my style. Even though I dont care about lyrics at all songs just feel naked without some vocals. Could care less what they say but its like an orchestra without the violins. Just feels wrong. The covers are a fun novelty but the whole thing kinda feels like a novelty. Just stack that shit up on tip of itself. Its just not my thing. Also the bongos get old after a while. Its a cool instrument but I dont know enough about percussion in general to really appreciate it. Also it gets old after a while. A long ass album highlighting the same instrument every time just gets boring. I dont hate it but im never coming back that's for sure

Covers

Great bongos! But if I’m honest & lying on my death bed I’m not going to ask my nearest and dearest to play Bongo Rock before I die

Worth hearing for the oft-sampled track "Apache" but you can pretty much lift up the needle after that (seeing that the rest of the album is corny 70s horn-driven pseudo-cop show soundtrack instrumental rock).

Is this a joke of some kind?

musicianship is good but not my thing

Interesting listen to see where the breaks are, but otherwise something of a curio. The story behind Winer, however, is a far more interesting slice of random west coast career paths.

It's fine - but an album of covers played on bongos just made me want to here some of the originals

It’s like the soundtrack to a bunch of 80’s & 90’s TV shows and movies. Fun, inventive, catchy but ultimately more kitschy than compelling.

It was fun! And I recognized some songs - covers - but not sure I found anything for me. Definitely worth a listen, but not personally for me.

Well, if you are really into bongos...

I am the Great Bongholio!!!

Bongos are hard to take for 78 minutes.

I was initially excited about this. I’ve been doing taiko for about 2 years now, so am more positively inclined to listening to percussion-forward (or even percussion only) music than before. Also! So many of my favorite hip hop artists have sampled stuff off this album! Always a thrill to recognize a sample. That said, I couldn’t make it through this. It’s good for a laugh, but the joke goes on for an hour and 17 minutes, like listening to a kid whose discovered one of those “101 ______ Jokes” books and then reads the entire thing to you on the bus. A couple of zingers, but mostly just me listening politely until I can leave.

Different

Tricky one to review Listening to the full album ⭐️ I imagine a live performance in the park at a summer concert series with a few buds and brews where they only play two songs, probably ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I get it, bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong bong OKAY I GET IT.

my immediate reaction was, man this is a dog run of albums. Then i checked, this goes for an hour and eighteen minutes? Fine... I was expecting actual bongo covers. not big band embellishments with the hint of bongo underneath. Some sneaky sick beats on here. Gems were - Let There Be Drums and of course, their take on In A Gadda Da Vida

Certainly a treasured historical document thanks to its influence on Hip Hop culture, but judged in a vacuum its just OK.

So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't want to leave the Congo, oh no no no no no... No reference to this album, I just like fallout... I thought I'd hate this, but I didn't. Some cool moments on here. In a Gaddafi da Vida never gets old no matter the version😂 Give it a go at least once.

Good for them. Not for me.

Perfectly fine just not my thing

Less is defn more. Would have been happy just with Apache.

Bongo Rock Bongo bongo bongo bongo, bongo, bongo bongo bongo. Bongo. Bongo bongo bongo bongo bongo, bongo. Bongo bongo bongo. Bongo, bongo, bongo bongo bongo bongo bongo, bongo bongo bongo bongo. Bongo bongo bongo. Bongo bongo, bongo bongo, bongo bongo bongo bongo. Bongo bongo bongo. Bongo bongo bongo, bongo bongo. Bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo. Bongo, bongo. Bongo, bongo, bongo bongo bongo, bongo bongo…bongo. Bongo. TLDR; Bongo 🪘🪘 Bongo: Let There Be Drums

My overall issue, aside from the fact that I have a visceral hatred of bongos, is that if you say you're a bongo band don't bottle it. Nearly all the tracks swamp the bongos in the mix, and introduce a drum-kit centre stage. With one ear off the bongo, it's clear how lightweight these compositions/covers are. They all verge on the saucy feel of Benny Hill - I imagine the soundtrack to 'Confessions of a Window Cleaner' would sound very much like this. But the opening run of three surf rock tracks is of higher quality, and certainly gives it some credibility and some chutzpah. Before the bongo fatigue sets in.

historical curiosity, given the later sampling. amount of bongos sufficient for a lifetime.

Quite a mixed bag. I couldn’t manage it all. Great musicians, sometimes really grooving. Sometimes the foundation they’re jamming over is really, really boring (Bongo Rock). Kinda feels like it’s best for sampling, not listening to.

There's no way that this is actually real. A bongo album. Is there a market for this? This is an album that we all MUST listen to before we die? Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. But it's all covers. The opener 'Apache' is essentially the song you know and love from The Sugarhill Gang. When looking through Wikipedia, I was not too surprised that there were many versions before this. I was absolutely shocked to my core to find out that The Sugarhill Gang actually covered Incredible Bongo Band when writing their version and that the bongo version is actually heavily sampled by a long list of artists and even called "hip-hops national anthem". So that's why this album is on the list, then. Anyway, the rest of this album is just funky background music, with a hell of a lot of bongo thrown in. The bongo doesn't particularly add anything and it the weakest bit of the whole of this instrumental album. I'd be a lot more intrigued if the bongos were the main focus of the album, but they're almost pushed to the background for the most part. Understandable I guess, as it's only a percussion instrument, but still. Don't go all in on bongos and not deliver on bongos. Despite the cool sounding music and the cool link to the song 'Apache', this is a gimmick album at best. This is definitely for someone, but it ain't for me I'm afraid.

Honestly as I see something called Bongo Rock I was a little eeee and I’m alright with it. It was intriguing and definitely something new but pretty cool. I definitely see influence and why people like it but I think after a while it’s not for me.

Samples galore - but not something I'd listen back to again and again

I like bongos but not a full albums worth.

I know this was a big influence for sampling in the hip hop community which is cool. The album wasn't for me though

Lots of instrumentals covers of famous tracks with lots of extra bongos? Who asked for that?

BORING

Too much bongo for me but Apache and Last Bongo in Belgium are amazing!!

Correcto

Not bad for an instrumental only album I guess and some cool riffs but there just wasn't a heap to it.

Cool album but kinda boring

How many bongos is too many bongos? If this album was made as a joke I would give it a 5.

Why did the bongo player go to jail? Because he couldn’t stop beating one out. I like it… for a bit, but that is a very hard album to get through. Incredible amount of bongo. A couple of 4 or possibly 5 star tracks on their own, but as an album as a whole, not great. If I hear any more bongo this week, I think I’ll vomit.

It's fun, but I don't want an album of this. It's a side not an entree.

The novelty wore off pretty quickly for me

i am def growing more fond of instrumental albums throuout this journey, i gave gatz some strong 4s and 3s just last week , ive enjoyed jazz albums and have highly rated a lot of progressiv erock bongo rock is the bedrock of a lot of hiphop - my fav genre and i can appericiate that .. as a whole however, and as a standalone album it doesnt do enough for me

"Let There Be Drums" - great track. Loving the beats and the riffs. Also love the Last Bongo in Belgium Breaker Mix. The rest of the stuff I can take or leave. Great to dance to though.

With the album name Bongo Rock by the Incredible Bongo Band and songnames like Bongolia and Dueling Bongos, I wasn't sure if there would be enough bongos on this album. Luckily, my heart could rest easy. After about 3 songs, I was wondering to myself: "You know what song would be really improved by the addition of several Bongos? In A Gadda Da Vida!" And whaddaya know? It's right there. I think every second of this album has been sampled later, but to call that the redeeming factor?

If you’re into bongos, this is for you. I’m not. 2 stars.

OK... the arrangements are pro, but they wear after a few songs. How is this anything more than a novelty album? I don't care how many hip hop bongo samples it produced. Is a K-Tel record next on the list?

Oh boy

I also stopped listening after Bongo Rock. Was sick of the album by then so felt no need to continue. Pretty boring. Good band name though.

I like bongos but a whole album of them is too much

middling at best. Tired in places. Repetitive in all ways.

This was… kind of exactly what I imagined. Pretty unimaginative instrumental renditions of vaguely popular songs with the gimmick being that there are some bongos chucked in there as well. Except the bongos are weirdly low in the mix for quite a few of the songs, so the main gimmick isn’t even that prevalent. Duelling Bongos is the only exception, which sees presumably two (maybe more - maybe there’s a whole army of them) bongoists trade off bars of solos, like a rap battle between two beatboxers with restricted timbral repertoire

As advertised

Bongo covers. Am I supposed to be impressed or entertained by bongo covers? If I wanted that I’d just go downtown in any major U.S. city to listen to the guys beat on buckets.

Toliko o tome, next.

Good action/family movie soundtrack

Over an hour of covers of other people's music, rife with the overuse of generic bongos. I can see this album being interesting in music history for sampling, inspiration, etc, but I don't truly believe I needed to hear it before I shuffled off this mortal coil. It's fine, it just goes on for entirely too long without introducing anything other than "hey, remember this song?"

Feel like I’m in Starsky and Hutch

Incredibly niche and a little samey. “Apache” still slaps though.

Needs more bongo

Pity we can't get the original version of streming

I didn’t really need to hear this

This is fun, but not a whole lot to it.

So the genre this falls under, which probably isn't included in the tags for 1001, is "gimmick". It's basically funk instrumentals, including some absurd covers ("Satisfaction" the most absurd), featuring bongos prominently. Think the middle part of "Jungle Boogie" where the only lyrics are "Jungle Boogie" over and over again, but slightly less organized. Which is fine, it's not unpleasant to listen to, but it also doesn't have much to offer except, says it right there in the band name, bongos.

Er... Seriously? Not that it ain't a little fun, even if you're not a bongo buff or a hip hop producer digging crates for samples ideas... But, I mean, seriously? Like it's important that I listen to this once in my life??? Like, SERIOUSLY??? 2/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 7/10 for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 49 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 409 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 238 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 305 (including this one) ---- Better albums released in 1973 (at least 45 of them): Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon Iggy And The Stooges - Raw Power Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells David Bowie - Aladdin Sane Stevie Wonder - Innervisions Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road The Wailers - Catch A Fire Can - Future Days Bob Marley And The Wailers - Burnin' ZZ Top - Tres Hombres Lou Reed - Berlin Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure New York Dolls - New York Dolls Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Lehn-Nerd Skin-Nerd King Crimson - Lark's Tongue In Aspic Mott the Hoople - Mott Blue Öyster Cult - Tyranny And Mutation John Cale - Paris 1919 The Who - Quadrophenia Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. It’s entertaining to listen to, but I didn’t find it particularly outstanding. The bongos aren’t really a prominent feature (which is difficult to do, admittedly) but you can hear them. ‘Duelling Bongos’ is mostly done on a drum kit too. Probably won’t revisit this very often.

It answered the question I always had: “can there be an album with too many bongos”

Levy selkeästi parempi kuin etukäteen osasi pelätä. Apassi ylivertaisesti paras. 2,49*

album cover with "Bongo Rock" in quotes is very funny record company executive recruiting musicians for a bongo project is funny, in that pathological businessman way of 'funny'. did Michael Viner play anything on this? being part of a sample library for early hip hop is very cool. 'this slaps' is a hilarious review. unfortunately I do not think this 'slaps' in a way that is not literal. I think I am going 2, because being a source for a drum beat used by good artists isn't enough to call it good. HOWEVER I do think prolific samples deserve a spot on an essential listening list. bongos: slapped. (⌐■_■)

Too many bongos

Too many bongos

As it's own album, it's whatever. The bongos were, despite being the headliner, the least interesting part of the record for me. Taking into account its influence, given it helped the Sugarhill Gang, and hip hop as a whole, gain traction? Second to none. So many samples from throughout hip hop history come from here. This is probably the album I respect the most in this whole list thus far.

Fun instrumental band. Fun listening to the album.

Just a bunch of covers mainly, so not bad but also really not important

Mildly amusing, but no more. 1.5 stars but rounded up to 2 for novelty. This is what I imagined Richard Feynman's office sounded like

I've got better things to do with my time than listen to extended bongo cover versions. I'll give it a couple points for some interesting percussion but this is one of these rare ones where I gonna call it done after the fourth song.

An 8-second sample you must listen to before you die

Really unsure what to make of this. Both originals and covers fail to interest me. I don’t mind an album made up of bongos, but the instrument isn’t incredibly versatile. Take the drum solo breaks in “Wipe Out”. Their cover couldn’t possibly reach the range of necessary commotion that was presented on the original track. I would listen to these songs if they came on, but don’t desire to listen to the whole album again, or even once, honestly. 2/5

I don't think it deserves the place on the list. Besides the two "Apache" remakes, it's pretty sparkless. 2.5/5.

Not that incredible to me. I liked a couple of the cover songs enough but this album could have been about 1/3 of the length.

Never heard of this artist, was kinda intrigued with the first track and then it went meh from there. Suspect this is among the 1,001 only because a number of acts used samples from it years later.

Oh boy, that’s a lot of references to what’s at best a tertiary percussion instrument. Let’s see how this goes. -I know Apache. The sugar hill gang version was a staple at college parties. -I recognize “last bongo in Belgium” from the beastie boys’ “looking down the barrel of a gun.” -I hate the more famous inna gadda da vita so this is arguably an improvement.

2.5 I was expecting this to be a tough listen but it turned out to be OK. The other instruments/musicians were pretty good along with the bongo dude. Lots of bongos though. BONGO

Surprisingly not as many bongos as you'd expect

For film music it's great but for an everyday listen it's a challenge. Middle Of the road for me.

Ja ok, kann man mal machen. Aber ein ganzes Album? Muss echt nicht sein.

Nice upbeat music but no lyrics to the songs

Painful

You wouldn't expect a 75 minute album of bongo focused Instrumental music to be an easy listen. And you'd be right, but this is way more fun than it has any right to be. This is clearly a passion project and I can't tell if Michael Viner's is in on the joke or is the joke. Either way, I enjoyed it. The songs do drag after a time. In A Gadda Da Vida was rough and Dueling Banjos was all over the place. But the fun songs that later would be hip hop samples are great. Apache had me dancing. I can't give this a high score because it's not that good but I'm glad it was on the list. This is a super fun reference point and a cool band to show people.

While technically impressive, with pounding bongos and an impressive brass performance, it unfortunately didn’t manage to capture my attention for very long. I can see people being very into this, but it’s not for me.

Bongos huh? And that's the whole thing? Like on every track there will be a bingo solo? Huh. Well. Alright I guess.

Woah! Slow down egghead. More bongo than you can poke a drumstick at.

I mean, how much bongo can one person handle

This was a really interesting album and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I did like it a lot however it was strange that the songs were all covers and the only real difference was that it was using bongos. I liked it but not really sure what to say here. 2/5

1001 best album ever? Ever??

I didn't expect to like it. I gave it a try...listened to the beginning of all the songs, but ending up skipping after a little bit. Truth be told, I like singing with my music. 2/5

Lmao the bongos were absolutely the worst part of this album. They reminded me of my high school’s drum line. The horns were nice and interesting enough, but I am a lyric girly through and through.

What am I supposed to do with this lol, needless to say I’ve never listened to this and have zero expectations other than bongos. You ever listen to the People’s Court theme in full? That has a killer bongo part to it. I uh. I got nothing but to listen to this. It’s 1970s funk with bongos. I don’t know what else to say. It is cool hearing sample origins! I dunno. The best parts were guitars and synthesizers. Didn’t really get the full excitement from the bongos. It’s not really bad. 2.5/5

One song that gets sampled. Otherwise it’s …irritating? I love percussion but this seems inessential.

I feel like this is an album Homer Simpson would know by heart.

I’m not sure why the world needed this album but hopefully they enjoyed making it

Should there be an album of bongo-driven instrumental covers? (definitely, why not?) And is it any good? (no, not really) Destined to soundtrack the closing credits to every 70's-based film forever.

There is a reason this album has been sampled so many times. A fun record, managing to do a lot instrumentally. Feels like wood veneer.

Can see the historical value but it's just a kitsch curiosity

I thought it to be a little repetitive

Not a clever name. It's a lot of bongos. Interesting to hear the origin of some super famous samples but otherwise ...

it sounds very competent.. but why 2/5

This is a joke, right? It's got lots of good beats (obviously) but do I really need to hear it before I die? I don't think so - but unfortunately it's too late now because I already have.

A trip. At times extremely funny, occasionally it's absolutely astounding, and often it's like being at a weird all-inclusive hotel evening show that lasts far too long. Listened on a plane, which I don't know was the perfect location. I'd like to mark this higher in a way, but (a) the version of Satisfaction is too silly to bear and (b) I was extremely glad when it ended.

The sort of music only a geeky 13-year-old would think is cool or "killer," and not really for any mature, much less discerning rock critic. At best, a briefly amusing novelty act. At worst, a complete waste of time.

Not really my jam

Nice break beats that became hip-hop classics, but not something I would play.

I genuinely did listen to this, but it immediately left my brain. I don't know if Incredible Bongo Band needed a spot. Felt quite sad in the office pushing through the 75th minute of bongos. One and a half. Fave track: Okey Dokey

Would be great to mix some of these into a DJ set or something. Lotsa fun, probably didn’t need to listen to before I died. Two and a half. Fave track: Apache

Um. While I appreciate the inclusion on the basis of diversity, and I also appreciate that the people making this seem to be sincere, this is kind of hysterically bad. It might end up being my first one star. I assume it's only on the 1001 because of the number of breaks that were sampled for various hip hop tunes. I guess I'll give it two stars because of how earnest it is.

The first song is great but as the album went on I lost interest

This was actually significantly better than I expected, lots of energy, especially the first couple tracks, Apache is fantastic but I can only rate a bongo cover album so high. 5.5/10

Oceans eleven et al. Understood as it is. 2/5

Beetje gimmicky, een paar goede nummers, veel matige

At first I was excited to hear a bongo oriented album, never heard that before! But I was kind of quickly disappointed, unfortunately, by the low-effortness of playing mostly (only?) covers. The ones that weren't obvious covers felt more like jam tracks, and got a bit too messy. I don't think it sounded bad per-se, and it was quite cozy listening to the album, but I just don't think an album with mostly covers really belong on this list which is what brings the score down.

A collection of Bongo covers?! Not overall that impressed, although the cover of Apache is actually pretty good. Especially the break beat is a hip-hop staple. I have the same feelings about this as the "Ananda Shankar" album, there must be something better than a collection of pop/rock covers? I did however read about one of the musicians "Bobbye Hall" who played percussion on this as well as on everything from "The Wall", "Edge of Seventeen" and "Me and Bobby Mcgee", quite impressive!

Too many bongos

67 minutes of bongo rock is just too much

Det for længe at høre bongotrommer uden vokaler, men ellers fede beats 2/5

I thought I wanted bongos. I did not

well. it sure is!

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Nah, not my thing but some soothing beats! Favourite song: Track 1 - Apache

Interesting in parts

No need to rate individual songs here. They're better than I expected, but I would not seek them out in the future. 2.5/5.

I mean, someone has a passion for bongo drums and you can't deny it! Bonus point for the track title Bongolia, it made me laugh.

This album overstayed its welcome for me. Both within each individual song and as a whole. 80 mins is just far too long for an instrumental album like this one. Most of the songs I would start out enjoying mostly just because they were a change of pace from the previous song. Then they would get repetitive and I'd grow tired of it again. That being said, the songs where the guitar took the for front really shined for me. Satisfaction- I Can't Get No was a really fun listen. But even that song could have ended at the halfway point. I think this is a good album to throw on in the background while you clean your house or something. But there isn't enough substance to justify the length.

Fun wears off quite quickly.

Playbong Carti - Bongolia 4/10

Too much bongos.

One's being asked to take seriously "In a Gadda da Vida" with bongos? Seriously? And is one surprised this started out as a b-movie soundtrack? Decidedly not. One can't quibble with the playing – it's certainly funky – but it's also forgettable and, by design, filler. Naming this a required or essential listening suggests a near-pathological pet peeve on the part of a single editor (maybe two), perhaps even a grievance with the world that merits treatment via therapy or pharmaceuticals.

Sounds like a shag carpet

Starts off well, enjoyable, funky, energetic and different! By track 5 though I’m all bongoed out and have had enough.

It was ok. I’d pull something from this as a segue if I had it as an LP and had to pee. I like it because I was at work and had time to jam. 2/5

Dog this shitbwas just bongo covers cmon now

# 43 : Why would you need to hear a Bongo album before you die? In saying that, it was a good laugh. CLOP, CLOP, CLOPPITTY, CLOP! Raunchy '73

Yes it's the birth of a ton of samples...ok

Cool and stuff, but a little more than Bongo instrumentals would have helped, little monotonous

I'm not sure how bongos have claimed the spot for one of the funniest instruments out there. But listen to the new Across the Spiderverse soundtrack and you'll learn that bongos really do have a place in new popular media. This was allright. Could use more bongos. 2

Interesting album for sample history but not that interesting to listen to.

They ruined In A Gadda Da Vida, an unforgivable sin. This strikes me as the 70s version of those horrifically middle of the road acoustic covers of decent music you hear in shops and hotels nowadays. However, Apache was a tune.

no me gusta mucho

Cool, but I don't like bongos THIS much

So totally not my thing. I feel like I could have slapped this together.

Started out fun but man that’s a lot of bongo. Nice concept for a song or two.

Didn’t really rate it, decent beat but jsut meh.

did not expect to come in with jump on it ! every artist ever has sampled this band. how did i not know them before. an incredible bongo band. 2.5

Funky instrumental album that is mainly known for Apache which has been sampled a lot in hip hop. It was ok to listen to in the background and the focus on the bongos was different, but it had a lot of covers and wasn’t very interesting.

Reminded me of 60's beach party movies.

Not really sure I saw the need for that

Skickligt men tråkigt

Incredible, Boring Band

Eh. Nice to listen to, but going out of the experience, I cannot remember a single track.
